Japanese Reseller getting out of control?
I'm sorry if this post doesn't go here but I am just so frustrated. I understand people's need to make money and the value of merchandise through time, but I am so tired of Japanese resellers pricing things super high because it's "vintage."
Like, I've seen buttons priced at $600!?Like, what!?! Who is buying that? Why continously price things at values no one will buy! I keep seeing the same items repeatedly going back up, and the prices climbing. Like, I went snooping on the day a launch happened in Japan for some merch and I watched one shop sell 1 item from it, and then upped everything $10!! When I called them on it they were just like, "it's popular!"
I can't speak for the other characters, but I can tell you nothing more with Neji on it sold. Yes, that item was popular, but it was also $30 something.
Like, do they not realize if they price things lower more people will buy and trust them, and they'd be making so much more money!?!
Like, my favorite character is Neji. Has been for like 17 years now, and I admit he's gotten more popular with time, but a button with his face is not worth $600.
I'm happy to pay someone enough for their service. I'm happy to covering shipping. To cover them going to get it. To cover them packaging it. Putting it online. The fact vintage, rare, or other items have some sort price increase.
But, if you get a postcard free with your purchase it is not worth $50-60 dollars. That is in no way a fair price increase.
Heck, there was one seller I'd already bought from, and I wanted to add 3 postcards and a file. Things that wouldn't increase weight or package size. Three things I knew the price of. Three things that they were acting like I was getting such a great deal. Things that they'd up the price by $34 dollars šŸ˜‘.
I know there's other sites (and feel free to share any in the comments. My favorite is GoodsRepublic.com ). But ebay makes it so much easier to find cool or even older merch, and I'm just so tired of feeling like I'm getting scammed everytime I want to get something with Neji's face on it šŸ˜‘
Because be honest, who is buying this sticker sheet for $80???!?!? šŸ¤¦ā€ā™€ļøšŸ«

2024.05.14 13:19 TheGreatGimmick Suggesting Entangled Conduits, a relatively expensive (so hopefully balanced) way to access three powerful effects not yet in the game.

Crafting, Properties, and Appearance

Echo Shard Echo Shard Echo Shard
Echo Shard Conduit Echo Shard
Crying Obsidian Crying Obsidian Crying Obsidian

Picture of Crafting Recipe

Entangled Conduits share most properties with a Beacon, such as placement, size, piston interactions, and so on. They can be mined successfully by hand or with any tool. When destroyed by an explosion, the block always drops as an item. However, unlike a Beacon they only produce a light level of 10, the same as Crying Obsidian.
Entangled Conduits appear somewhat similar to Stonecutters or Enchanting Tables in that they consist of a low 'table' with some animated feature in the center. They have a Sculk-themed color palette, a square base, and a snowglobe-like 'dome' on top. The dome's appearance changes based on the biome theme currently reflected in the Entangled Conduit network (see below).

Usage

Placement

All Entangled Conduits placed in the world belong to the same 'network' (explained below). As such, placed Entangled Conduits keep their chunk loaded (at a level of 31) so as to remain active in this global network.

Interaction

Players can interact with any single Entangled Conduit to toggle ALL Entangled Conduits in the world between all states currently available to the Entangled Conduit network. The available states consist of each unique biome at least one Entangled Conduit has been placed within (explained further below). Only player interaction can activate an Entangled Conduit to toggle between states.
For example, say four Entangled Conduits are placed in the world, with their chunks consisting of the following biomes: Forest, Forest, Ocean, Jagged Peaks. Interacting with any Entangled Conduit in the world would toggle their states in the following order: Forest -> Ocean -> Jagged Peaks -> repeat. To be clear, there are only three states in this setup: Having two Entangled Conduits in the same biome (Forest) still only grants one state to the rotation.
The snowglobe-like dome in the center-top of each Entangled Conduit changes appearance based on the current biome state of the network.

Effect

Entangled Conduits cause their chunk and the chunks immediately adjacent to them to behave as if they were the chunk and biome currently selected by the Entangled Conduit network's state.
This includes spawning (e.g., mobs, frog variants, etc.), fishing rewards, slime chunks, and so on. Biomes exclusive to certain altitudes (e.g., Deep Dark) or temperatures (e.g., Warm Oceans) can still be emulated, though coordinate-dependent effects (e.g., rain turning to snow at sufficiently-high altitudes in some biomes) will not occur at invalid coordinates even if the contributing Entangled Conduit was placed at such coordinates.
Entangled Conduits work across dimensions, but dimension-exclusive effects (e.g., weather and the day-night cycle in the Overworld, the inability to place water in the Nether, etc.) are NOT transferred. For example, if the Entangled Conduit network is used to copy Frozen Peaks into the Nether, goats will spawn (and probably die pretty quickly by charging something they shouldn't haha) but it will not snow and you cannot place water, because you are still in the Nether.

Justification and Preemptive Arguments

Crafting and Value

Entangled Conduits require some of the least-utilized materials in the game, namely Crying Obsidian, Echo Shards, Nautilus Shells, and Hearts of the Sea. This gives these materials more use cases.
Echo Shards tie into the "remote communication" mechanic of Entangled Conduits, since Sculk Sensors also allow for "wireless" signals. As a component, the Conduit mainly just lends its name to the final product, but it fits thematically in that sense, since a conduit is something that acts as a channel for the transmission of something (in this case biomes).
Requiring Echo Shards and especially Hearts of the Sea to craft causes Entangled Conduits to be a non-renewable and relatively difficult-to-obtain resource, similarly to Shulker Boxes. This limits how much they can be abused, and justifies their extreme power with a relatively high cost.

Chunk Loading

Usage
Chunks becoming unloaded is a major source of frustration for anyone that did not build their base within a spawn chunk (and doesn't wish to 'cheat' by using commands). Even if you did build your main base in a spawn chunk, remote locations of interest may be found outside of this range and become unloaded. This is most relevant for redstone contraptions: Say you built a machine that is supposed to activate whenever the sun goes down. You might think that such a trigger should be a 'global' effect, but your machine will not work unless it is inside a loaded chunk!
Current Solution
The current solution to this problem is to create a chunk loader, but these are relatively complex, tedious, often annoyingly loud, need to be hidden (or else be an eyesore), take up space in both the Overworld and the Nether, can mess with Nether Portal networks, and most importantly break when their server shuts down, making them unsuitable for Realms in particular (Realms servers hard shut down when no players are online).
So, although chunk loading is technically currently possible, a reliable way to keep a chunk loaded is so useful and sought-after that a dedicated mechanic is long overdue in my opinion.
Potential Abuse?
Now, obviously the game only loads a limited number of chunks for a reason: If too many chunks are loaded, performance issues may arise. However, this is already possible to abuse using the above chunk loaders. Entangled Conduits would be even more difficult to spam out into the world than the current chunk loaders, because each Entangled Conduit requires a Heart of the Sea to craft. Not only are Hearts of the Sea a non-renewable resource that cannot be farmed, but they require a rather lengthy process to obtain on top of that!

Remote Redstone Activation

Current Solution
Currently, there are extremely limited (and convoluted) ways to remotely activate a redstone machine. You can simply place down an extremely long redstone signal (which requires a ton of time, redstone, and a pathway from your machine to your activation location), you can use a timed trigger (e.g., setting up a clock to trigger later, or using world effects like the day-night cycle), or you can use Sculk mechanics for more short-ranged but nonetheless "wireless" signals.
Entangled Conduits have obvious advantages over all of these, most notably their simplicity and unlimited range. All you need is an Observer facing any Entangled Conduit and it will detect when the state of the global network changes for any reason.
Yeah Yeah, Another Wireless Redstone Suggestion, Yawn...
To be fair, Entangled Conduits do not directly provide "wireless redstone", and have many limitations that hamstring their usefulness for that purpose.
Instead, an analogy I would draw involves a system I made in my survival world for my Ender Pearl Stasis Chamber recall machine: I set up a redstone circuit that detects when I sleep through the night, using a global mechanic (time of day) to communicate with my system back at my main base over any distance. Natural day-night cycles iterate between light levels continuously, while skipping the night by sleeping abruptly changes the light level, which my system detects. So, when I am ready to be recalled, I can remotely trigger my home base's Ender Pearl Stasis Chamber from anywhere in the world to bring me back just by sleeping.
Entangled Conduits would merely make global communication like this a bit more straightforward. However, they still:
  • are exclusively manually-activated (e.g., like Levers as opposed to Pressure Plates or Observers)
  • are all tied to the same global network (and thus only one device can use them at a time, otherwise you would accidentally trigger other devices using the network)
  • do not directly interface with any redstone components (they produce no signal, the only way to use them is through Observers sensing them change state).
  • are far, far more expensive than other "wireless" options like Sculk Sensors or even Calibrated Sculk Sensors.
Since we only recently received the capability for "wireless" signals with Sculk, one of the main criticisms I foresee about this post is that the existence of Entangled Conduits might make some Sculk mechanics obsolete. However, that isn't the case at all, as the two serve drastically different purposes.

Biome Emulation

Entangled Conduits...
  • do not make exploration obsolete. In fact they actively encourage exploration, since you still need to find the desired biome in the first place.
  • create an emulated biome that is quite small, only taking up 9 chunks (the Entangled Conduit's chunk and those immediately adjacent).
  • cannot fully mimic any biome, since most unique features of biomes (e.g., terrain, generated structures, ore/resources, etc.) are created at world spawn, which emulating a biome afterwards does not affect.
  • are relatively expensive in that they cannot be farmed, limiting their usage and therefore ease of abuse.
All of that being said, there are obviously many, many use cases for emulating various biomes in specific chunks at will. I won't be able to list them all here, so instead I argued for the mechanic's downsides (and therefore balance) in the above list.
What do you think? Thank you for your time and feedback!

2024.05.14 13:06 somesz I can't get into Fallout 4, no matter how I'd love to. Shall I try F76?

First of all, don't hate me! I'm an old school Fallout diehard. Started with F3 then replayed F1, F2 twice. Tactics once. Wasteland 2 once. Objectively the best Fallout was New Vegas in terms of story, dialogue system, perk system, RPG elements, intrigues, factions and how you can finish the endgame, the acts and consequences. Vegas was the top! I also loved Fallout 3 because of it's atmopshere, it's gloomy set and mostly because that was my first Fallout experience.
Then came Fallout 4 and I felt just like Skyrim came out. A watered down game which hardly resembled any good of the franchise. After Morrowind or Oblivion I was very dissapointed despite I finished the game twice. No real character development, hugely stupid and dumb story and I felt the same with Fallout 4 although never finished because it became so boring and repetitive. Now, after a couple of years I again gave a chance to Fallout 4 but I couldn't stand the game more than like 10 hours. I mean really? Totally f**ed up perk and SPECIAL system, boring NPCs with stupid dialogues, no censequences, boring world and storytelling etc. Yeah the visuals are great but F4 is nothing more than a Far Cry episode in a Fallout universe inho. I really can't get into.
How to play this game without hating the Perk system and it's stupid dialogues? At the moment I think a Far Cry or a Borderlands episode are way more rewarding and fun than this soulles Fallout 4.
Does Fallout 76 better? I loved Elder Scrolls Online and I still think that ESO has all the best aspects of the previous Elder Scrolls Titles. Can it be said about F76? Can I enjoy F76 after I terribly dissapointed in Fallout 4?
Again I don't wan to hurt anybody feelings about F4 truth to be told I'm really sad I can't accept the game how it is.

2024.05.14 12:59 KabrTheFearless Camper Entry Report: Isaac 'Shepard' Sheppard

Camp Half-Blood Official Camper Entry Report #JDB7YC
First report is based on initial interviews with Camp Half-Blood staff. NOT FOR CAMPER VIEWING.
Name Age D.O.B Height Weight Hair Eyes Parentage
Isaac Sheppard 16 August 16th 5'10" 109kg Chestnut Hazel-Green Heracles
Origin
Camper Isaac Sheppard, preferably referred to as 'Shepard' simply has detailed his younger years of upbringing as more typical of what we consider mortal activities. Unaware of his lineage, he was raised by his mother, Jennifer Sheppard, in the boroughs of Hartfort, Conneticut without recorded incident. Shepard hinted towards his mother knowing more but quickly halted further questioning, insisting that she wouldn't have hidden facts from him. Shepard dictated mortal schooling had no outstanding events save his performance in physical sports. Regular disciplining regarding a laxidase attitude at any sports, despite exemplary performance in nearly every field. Shepard stated the only one he liked the sound of was archery but the school's facilities did not support this outside of occasional yearly excursions to more advanced facilities.
Satyr Protector Member 38821 was tasked with investigating a phoned-in anonymous report submitted to Camp Half-Blood of a teenager presenting with physical strength exceeding that of even typical demigods. Whilst this tip-off left no further detailing beyond the city of Hartford and to look for excessive physical capabilities, the suspected caller is believed to be Jennifer Sheppard. Protector 38821 was able to determine Isaac's school and infiltrate his class in order to breach the topic of introducing him to the reality of being a son of the god Heracles. Days later, Hartford Police Department reported arson at the home address of Isaac and Jennifer Sheppard. Isaac presented statements of 'scaled individuals' fleeing the scene but mortal services dismissed these as distressed claims of a teenager in shock of losing his mother. Protector 38821 was able to retrieve Shepard from intervening social services and was in the process of transporting them both to camp via train when they both came into contact with individuals described by Shepard as 'guys but with these glowing eyes and armoured...or metal?'. For reporting's sake, contact is assumed to be hostile automata of origin unknown.
Protector 38821 and Shepard were able to reach Long Island whilst under extended assault from these automata, roughly 7 hours later according to statements from Shepard though accuracy of these estimates is lowered due to stress and high fatigue from protecting both himself and Protector 38821. Shepard openly admits that without the help of campers from Camp Half-Blood, he would not have survived the final stint to camp boundaries and his fate would have matched that of Protector 38821.
Powers:
  • Legendary Strength AKA 'Unstoppable Force' [Minor]
Isaac displays one of the highest levels of strength and stamina known of half-bloods. He has been recorded being able to lift up to 600 lbs. (or 272.16 kg) and can punch through concrete. Thankfully Isaac is aware of this and seems to have been informed of this by his mother for a significant portion of his life and can control this, despite not knowing of his bloodline.
  • Electrical Resistance [Minor]
First displayed during Shepard's extraction to camp, he shows a resistance to the harmful effects of electrical attacks such to a degree that he is able to withstand badly interacting with small appliances.
  • X [Minor]
Shepared has yet to display any further abilities. We do not yet know if this is an intentional action of obscuring them or whether Shepard simpy does not have any more abilities.
  • Herculean Fortitude AKA 'Immovable Object' [Major]
Isaac possesses a complete immunity to mental and emotional power. This includes reading his mental or emotional state. Those who attempt to influence or read his mental state report the sensation of attempting to read a blank slate, an immutable, unreadable presence some have found disconcerting. His presence/location can still be detected by these powers if a user were to attempt to locate him via these abilities. As a side-effect of these powers, he cannot be positively influenced or 'buffed' by other powers, excluding healing magic.
  • Summon Weapon [Domain]
Shepard is capable of summoning a weapon related to his godly parent, though his personal experiences have shaped the typical club that his siblings are capable of spawning into something a bit...scrappier. Whilst not as lethal as a Celestial Bronze weapon, the makeshift maul is entirely capable of lethal strikes when fuelled by Shepard's enhanced strength.
  • Alternate Vision [Domain]
Beginner Tier - Shepard describes this as an overlaid indicator in the form of a customisable crosshair over his own field of view that will show Shepard where an arrow will land if it is loosed at his current draw and aim. By drawing the string further and aim differently, so too will the indicator adjust. Shepard has determined quickly that this does not work with melee or thrown items.
Intermediate level - Shepard partially draws strength from his grandfatherā€™s domain here, completely unable to control the winds beyond the air in his lungs but he can observe them. When the HUD is up, he can determine wind-speed and direction, as well as how that will impact his shot with the aiming indicator being able to now compensate for wind.
Master tier - As Shepard masters this power over time, judging distance, aim, and after regular usage, he is able to use the HUD as a range finder to within a metre's precision.
  • Enhanced Skill Proficiency [Domain]
Isaac shows a increased proficiency in physical activities when he wishes to put the effort in in, particularly those that Heracles was renowned for such as wrestling, fighting, archery, and overall shows of strength.
Personality
Shepard's time at camp is only just beginning, with a greater report on his tendencies and personality still pending until he has shown his hand and can be interacted with. First impressions are guarded, the boy still getting to grips with this introduction of a new reality. Perhaps we may be able to discern more once he has completed what we believe to be a more introspective assessment, determining who he is in Camp Half-Blood and how demigods fit into what is to him, a new world.
Notes
  • No discernible reason behind the dismissal of his first name, 'Shepard' simply being a misspelling of his last name that he has stuck with.
  • Shepard appears to enjoy what he calls 'tinkering', idle adjustment and construction of functionless trinkets or pieces from mechanical parts. Notions of some kind of link to Hephaestus have been dismissed but camp officials may wish to nudge him towards campers with a proclivity of crafting to engage in Shepard's curiosity or ease any initial worries about joining camp
  • Be on watch for any conflicts regarding possessions, as Shepard's rushed retrieval has meant he has arrived at camp with only the clothes on his back. Initial talks with him have shown he is very protective of his 'home clothes'. Whilst he has taken to camp clothing without incident, Shepard may be harbouring thoughts of loss beyond just his mother.
End report. Begin report JDB36T on camper activities.
But the full tale of Shepard is a story we'll hear later. For now, we cut to the boy himself...
Shepard stood out in the open, placing himself accidentally at the centre of camp with his back to the Big House. His two saviours had to depart to carry on with their own business and so the clueless teen turned slowly to attempt to take in the enormity of where he stood, and what that meant for his tomorrow. Hopefully someone noticed the kid not in camp clothes, scratching his head and epitomising the term 'paralysed in indecision', and could offer kind words. Or even better, directions to the bathroom?

2024.05.14 12:58 saturnian-sketchbook I am lost as to what to do for my younger brother

My (29F) brother (26M) has no clear direction in life. He has blown through 4 college programs and has not completed any of them. If he lived in any other family, he would have racked up so much debt for education he is not using.
My brother works at a coffee shop making minimum wage, under 40 hours per week. He has been there for nearly 10 years. He has ADHD and is likely on the spectrum. Since childhood, he has always exhibited social difficulties, challenges with relationships, social awkwardness, social anxiety and vocal/body stimming. If he is not working, he is in his room gaming. It has been like this for years. He has no social life, no friends, no desire to get his driverā€™s licence, and no goals for himself. He is oblivious to his future and what it looks like. I have tried writing him a resume so he can look for an entry level jobs that only require a high school education. Getting relevant information is like pulling teeth. I keep asking him about some community work he did in his early twenties and he keeps saying heā€™ll send it over to me but he doesnā€™t.
My parents, who have been divorced since I was 10, should have sat down to talk about my brother years ago. But now shit is hitting the fan. My mom and stepdad are currently working with a contracting company to build a house that they will retire in. My stepdad does not want his stepson, my brother, to move in with them. He believes that if he moves in with them, my brother will never leave. This has brought up fights and talks about them breaking up. They have been together for over a decade.
We donā€™t see much of my dad, maybe birthdays and holidays, and Iā€™m usually the one to reach out to him. He drives to our area all the time for his extracurriculars, but doesnā€™t really ask to see us. I donā€™t think he sees the gravity of my brotherā€™s situation because he hardly asks how weā€™re doing. He cares much for the fun things in his life, and I guess considering my brother does the same, the apple doesnā€™t fall far from the tree.
Iā€™m planning on moving out in early September with my boyfriend, at least that is the goal. I have already lived on my own for most of the pandemic. I moved back in late September 2023 because my ex left and I was in financial constraints due to a family member needing to borrow money.
I hate writing all this, but I am at an utter loss. Iā€™ve watched both parents, with their own families, take on the burden of being the glue that holds everything together. I feel like that cycle is moving onto me as I overheard my stepdad suggest that my brother lives with me. I donā€™t know what he expects me to do. I have made suggestions to my dad about how to handle things, and it doesnā€™t get taken seriously. I feel like I have to be the bad guy and give them a harsh, overdue reality check.
I made a similar post about a year ago and had to delete it. So many people called my brother useless. Despite my frustrations, I still love my brother dearly. But I lose sleep over this. Is there even anything I can do?

2024.05.14 12:42 thematth On a burnout again, multiple times a month

Hi all,
I'm 27, M
first of all, I know there may be a lot of people who would just tell me to man up, shut the hell up and keep going, not on this sub but overall. There are lot of such people in my social group, family, everywhere. It seems I don't have anyone who even remotely understands the point of my struggle.
The thing is, I don't like the idea I'm basically predestined to spend the rest of my life in some kind of work. The majority of the day, every day. Some days, recently pretty often, this feeling hits me so much that even after the work ends, I don't even enjoy things I normally like. I'm just feeling like a total lethargic crap waiting for it to start again the next day.
There's even more to it - I've got a really nice job (if you would take a look on it from an ordinary person viewpoint), I work from home, there's a rly fine group of people in my team, the manager is super cool dude, paycheck is somewhat alright, everything is really close to perfection here.
So this brings me to the topic itself. This is not about a certain type of job, this is about this life approach from top to bottom. I remember even my first day in kindergarten where only this idea to forcefully be there was presented to me was a total pain in the ass for me. It was the same on elementary school, on high school, even on Uni. I simply didn't want to be there at all, I felt forced to do something I don't like.
But there's still this problem that I just stop showing up, I'll probably die in the next month or two out of starvation. This is nuts, I cannot probably even describe all the stuff I'm thinking about right now.
What are some of the possibilities people like me have? All the articles online are only telling me to find something I'd like to do but I've already been reassured multiple times that no matter what it is, if it's forced, I won't like it. People around me are telling me 'dude, this is capitalism, just accept how it is or go to beg somewhere to Himalayas for one banana a day' or something.
I feel lost, I feel weak, stupid, unnecessary, unheard, misunderstood. It's hitting me really hard that some other redditors are often mentioning that they just daydream between winning a lottery or putting a bullet in their head.
This is just insane.
What are some steps you guys took on this path please? What helped you to find some ease in this?
Thank you for any contribution.

2024.05.14 12:38 Lord_PanDA_ Roku Overheating? Here're 9 Hot Fixes to Cool Down Your Roku

Roku Overheating? Here're 9 Hot Fixes to Cool Down Your Roku
Is your Roku turning into a little oven more often than youā€™d like?
No need to sweat itā€”here are nine cool fixes to prevent your Roku from overheating, all tried and true either from our extensive tech tests or proven successfully by the online community.
If youā€™re looking for a step-by-step guide complete with demo images for each solution, just check out the hyperlink under the solution's name.
  1. Let Your Roku Have a Break - Continuous streaming can heat up your Roku. Take breaks between your binge sessions to let it cool down, and always ensure there's adequate airflow around your device.
  2. Reposition Your Roku - Overheating can occur if your Roku is tucked away in a tight spot. Move it to an open area with good air circulation, and consider using a free HDMI extender from Roku to keep it away from other heat sources.
  3. Lower the Resolution - High resolution demands more from your Roku, increasing heat production. If overheating occurs during 4K streaming, switch to 1080p or even 720p through the display settings.
  4. Free Up Storage - A cluttered Roku works harder, which means more heat. Delete unused apps to lighten its load and keep the temperature down.
  5. Check for Hardware Issues - Sometimes, overheating is caused by internal damage. Look for signs of physical damage and seek professional help if necessary.
  6. Update Your Roku - Outdated software may cause inefficiencies that lead to overheating. Ensure your Rokuā€™s software is up to date to keep it running smoothly.
  7. Power Source Adjustment - If your Roku overheats while plugged into the wall, try powering it through your TVā€™s USB port for less demanding tasks.
  8. Regular Cleaning - Keep your Roku dust-free. Gently wipe the exterior with a dry cloth to prevent dust buildup that could insulate heat.
  9. Consider an Upgrade - Older Roku models or ones that continually overheat might need replacing. Look into newer models that handle heat better, like the Roku Ultra.
How Do I Know My Roku is Overheating? How to Check Its Temperature?
  • Secret Menu Access: Your Roku comes with a hidden menu that displays various system operations, including the deviceā€™s temperature. Access it by pressing the Home button on your remote five times, then the Fast Forward button once, Play/Pause once, Rewind once, Play/Pause again, and Fast Forward again. This will reveal the current operating temperature of your Roku.
  • Temperature Ranges: Normally, a Roku operates within 40-45Ā°C. If it climbs to 60-70Ā°C, it's heating up more than usual and needs attention. Above 80Ā°C? That's critical, and your Roku is definitely overheating.
  • Physical Signs: If your Roku feels excessively hot to the touch or you see an overheating warning on your TV screen, those are immediate signs that your Roku is too hot.
  • Performance Issues: Frequent buffering, slowdowns, or crashes can also indicate overheating, especially if they resolve after letting your Roku cool down.
These practical tips should help you keep your Roku cool and functional, ensuring uninterrupted streaming fun.

2024.05.14 12:28 AdviceAndFunOnly How to not be alone?

I don't know if it's my fault that I'm alone or not. I actually try to do things to spend time with others but just can't. Especially since I need to spend time with others to feel motivated and also concentrated, because now, often times I literally feel like I live on my phone while my studies don't matter.
Well first of all, I don't even have many possibilities to spend time with people in the first place. For example here in university for some reason everyone goes their own way during recess and we don't have a common recess or a room for everyone to come together.
Of course I could start a sport or another activity, and I already did in the past, but the issue here is that I'll only spend a limited amount of time in the activity too unfortunately. And even say I'll have to pay a lot.
And another problem is that even when I do meet people and I like them and they seem to like me too, it's impossible to see them outside and organise stuff with them. And that's even worse when I don't even see them in university for example THAT much, it's not like I spend every day with them.
But the thing is that everyone does want to hang out and meet but only in specifically organised events every few months where you need to spend money and bring food. And not like meet even once a week and regularly hang out and have fun. And especially I don't understand this cuz in this university we have more free time than usual. What will happen if I'll go to college the next year where I'll have much less free time?
And somehow people do have free time for spending their lives on social media apparently.
Maybe I'm annoying them too much cuz I ask to hang out too much in group chats and don't say that much anything else? But the thing is that I want to see them irl, not to talk infinitely and send memes and only see each other once a year. I want real socialisation not Internet one.
And also the thing is that I do it cuz I know that in the next year maybe I won't see them again. If I'll switch to another university and study something else then I won't really see them that much. And often time that's exactly what happened. I had "friends" from high school that I've never seen even once time since high school even if I would've loved to.
It was even worse when I met a nice group only at a one time event. Afterwards, I have all their contacts on Instagram, I have 1000 friends there but I don't see any of them anymore.
Maybe I'm too annoying sometimes, talking about stuff that interests me and disregarding the other person. Honestly, I don't know. I try to not be annoying and to be nice and funny. Don't know if this works tho.
I'm kinda depressed cuz I would've loved to have a group of friends, either to have fun and laugh together, or to help each other and do creative stuff. This would've made me more down to earth, actually feel whatever is happening, I would've done more sports, etc. And the main reason why I'm so distracted and living on my phone is because it seems like I have no other option.
Like I wanna have a group of friends like in series. Why can't this be the case? If anything, it seems like series are so popular because we don't have that many friendships in real life anymore, we only hang out online.
I don't know whether it's my fault or rather the fault of the society. Maybe I should move to another country, idk. I live in France and I've heard Italy is better but idk.
Keep in mind I can't actually have to get along with literally everyone, for example I'm Jewish and I won't tolerate anyone who doesn't like Jews.
But even tho this does limit my circle of friends, I don't think that's the main reason why I'm lonely, because even with people who have no problem with that and who are Jewish themselves and who even say that we both get along, even with them there's literally the same problem.
Maybe I'm kinda lonely cuz I'm not such a fan of going to bars and drinking? And yeah I'm not a fan of alcohol but I can still go to a bar if I were with my friends so idk.

2024.05.14 12:27 PhoenixFllies777 Judoka in MMA / High-level Judo use in MMA (List)

Judo is extremely underrated in MMA. It is definitely under-represented as well, due to a multitude of reasons (MMA is no-gi, Judo doesn't train leg attacks, IJF bans its top athletes from cross-competing, most MMA is in the USA where Judo sucks and wrestling is world-class, etc etc), but Judo is still very much used in MMA. The problem is many times, nobody recognizes it. American MMA commentators are also almost always completely clueless when it comes to Judo, which doesn't help (you need not go any further than Karo Parisyan basically going through half the Gokyo on his opponents, only to be greeted with the same OH MY GOD ! JUDO THROW! by Joe Rogan). There are many fighters, both superstars (Islam, Fedor) and not (Gregory Rodrigues, Luana Pinheiro) who heavily use Judo in their matches.
Over the years, I have actively been looking for Judo in MMA. I am going to share my list of fighters displaying high level Judo in MMA, as a reference point for anyone looking to see how the art is used in MMA, or even for anyone just looking to see some banging throws. The list is by no means exhaustive. I would love for people more knowledgeable than me to add fighters I may have missed.
Disclaimer: Let's focus on Judo use in MMA. There are several fighters who have a background, even a black belt, in Judo but don't really use it (Amanda Nunes, Valentina Shevchenko, Merab Dvalishvili, Shinya Aoki, Seika Izawa, Fabricio Werdum, Ronaldo Jacare Souza just off the top of my head). Also yes, Morote Gari is a leg takedown, and it is in the Judo syllabus. Almost nobody learned double legs in Judo, let's not go to these extremes.
Karo Parisyan
The OG of Judo in MMA, the man who single-handedly put Judo on the MMA map. Judo is displayed in all of his matches; several Youtube breakdowns and highlights exist as well. He also put out a Judo for MMA instructional which is gold, if you can get your hands on it. Unfortunately he got derailed by personal issues (I hear he's doing better now thankfully). Huge variety of throws, he used throws nobody else has used before or after against very high level opponents. Shoutout to his kimura grip hikikomi gaeshi that he almost beat GSP with.
Ronda Rousey
UFC champion, Olympic bronze medalist, WMMA pioneer - you know her, everyone knows her. Extremely one-dimensional, but a pioneer for her time. Her entire game plan was clinch JUDO THROW juji gatame (armbar). Shoutout to her textbook use of hip toss into kesa gatame into roflstomp (vs Alexis Davis). Her matches with Miesha Tate are also among the best MMA matches (male or female).
Fedor Emelianenko
PRIDE champion. Arguably the Heavyweight GOAT. Probably the best example of Judo adapted to MMA (together with Islam), as he did not rely on Judo as much as Karo or Ronda, but perfectly blended it with his striking to create an unstoppable force. I'd heavily recommend watching Sonny Brown's Fedor breakdown on Youtube, or pretty much any one of Fedor's matches, they're awesome. Shoutout to his use of the overhand right to switch stances when initiating clinches (as a R-handed Judo fighter fighting out of an Orthodox stance).
Islam Makhachev
UFC champion. Undefeated. Ideal example of Judo adapted to MMA. Yes, he's a Dagestani, and he has been training in MMA all his life, so obviously his style is not purely Judo, but it's obvious to anyone who knows where to look that his grappling base is more Judo than wrestling based. Shoutout to him submitting Charles Oliveira, the most prolific BJJ specialist in MMA history, with a Kata Gatame (arm-triangle choke, routinely taught in Judo as a pin with submission potential). His style is also very different from Khabib, who I will not include in this list for the opposite reason; his grappling base was significantly more wrestling based (although he did execute some ridiculously perfect Judo throws on occasion). The entire Khabib camp uses both Judo and wrestling though.
Jon Jones
UFC Champion. Contender for all-time GOAT. Is Jon Jones a Judoka? Nope. Do his matches feature Judo? Absolutely. You only need to watch one of his highlight reels to see a variety of Judo throws, Osoto Gari, Harai Goshi, Tai Otoshi, Sasae, a variety of Kosotos, along with his wrestling-based takedowns. He also uses a lot of inside trips, obviously from wrestling, but he's still a good example of how to use Ouchi Gari in MMA.
Jimmy Hettes
UFC former fighter. Old-school prolific grappler. Very high level Judo and BJJ. Did not have many matches, but they were all grappling clinics, and every one included a multitude of Judo throws (mainly Harai Goshi).
Kayla Harrison
PFL tournament winner. Double Olympic gold medalist. Her recent UFC debut against Holly Holm featured a Harai and a brutal Osoto Gari into a finishing choke.
Yoshihiro Akiyama (Sexiyama)
Heavy Judo base. Struggled in the UFC, but had some banging throws. Still competes at almost 50. Also his nickname was Sexy, can't go wrong with that.
Hector Lombard
Judo Olympian. Heavy Judo base as well, with very slick throws, although he preferred to stand and bang. Was once one of the hottest non-UFC MMA prospects, his career took a massive dive after he got popped for roids.
Satoshi Ishii
Judo Gold medalist. Heavy Judo base. Fought in a variety of promotions around the world, an absolute dog but with average results. He got brutally destroyed by Cro Cop, then went to train with him in Croatia, then denounced his citizenship and became a Croatian citizen. Lol. Also trains with Danaher, and has a bunch of no-gi Judo instructionals at ridiculous prices (because Danaher).
Serghei Spivac
UFC Heavyweight contender. Ragdolls everyone with sloppy but effective Judo throws. Shoutout to his landing in Kesa Gatame too.
Luana Pinheiro
UFC fighter. Judo black belt, (I believe) Olympic alternate. Uses Judo as her main offensive grappling base, has taken down all of her opponents with the same Harai Goshi / O Guruma hybrid.
Gregory Rodrigues
UFC fighter. ?Relative unknown. I personally never heard of him, until I randomly came across one of his matches were he executed one of the most brutal Harai's I've ever seen into a finish. All of his matches feature some degree of Judo, mainly uses Harai. No recorded Judo rank on his wiki (he's recorded as a heavily credentialed BJJ blackbelt), but it's obvious he has Judo training. Also very good wrestling and kickboxing (yes, he's very exciting to watch). Shoutout to his match against Brunno Fereira, a Judo black belt who escaped top position from Rodrigues by securing an Ippon grip, rolling to his knees, and chucking Rodrigues forward with a kneeling Ippon Seoi before brutally KO'ing him a few seconds later.
Tagir Ulanbekov
UFC fighter. Khabib's camp. Uses a lot of clinch takedowns. An absolute specialist in step around throws (I believe it's called "Polish" in wrestling?) - in Judo terms it would be Kosoto Gake +/- Ura Nage depending how you finish it.
Ayaka Miura
ONE Championship fighter. Heavy Judo base. Shoutout to her use of Kesa Gatame to finish opponents.
Rick Hawn
Judo Olympian. Twice fought for the Bellator championship. Unfortunately, I have not watched any of his actual matches, so I cannot confirm how much Judo he uses (I'd love for someone to chime in). Still has a highlight-reel standing Ippon Seoi Nage into KO, so I had to include him.
..
Honorable mention to Yoel Romero, an absolute unit of an athlete. Olympic silver medalist and World champion in Freestyle wrestling, fought for UFC gold. Obviously not a Judoka but he has the cleanest Sasae you will ever see in MMA, as well as a bunch of beautiful step-around throws and inside trips you've probably learned in Judo.

2024.05.14 12:21 LadyDairhean Generations

The Great Depression had a significant and lasting impact on society, especially in the Dust Bowl states. Oklahoma suffered the worst and is still suffering from its effects. The stock market crashed in 1929. This was 11 years after the end of WWI when a lot of working age men were killed. My father was 19 years old. Children age 4 and older had to go to work in the fields harvesting and hoeing weeds. My maternal grandmother who was born in 1932 cut broomcorn and picked cotton by hand. The International Harvester for cotton was invented in 1940, but only came into widespread use by 1970. The broomcorn industry died out in 1980. Older boys age 11 and up went to work in sawmills and the trades. Watch the movie Walk the Line. Johnny Cashā€™s older brother of 14 was almost cut vertically in half when he slipped and was cut through the sternum by a large saw blade. Can you imagine being that young and handling dangerous machinery with no safety equipment? Safety equipment didnā€™t exist back then and neither did child labor laws. Those old Boomer children worked just as hard as adults to help feed their families. They were punished for playing. They had to suck it up and endure extreme hardship just to eat and they ate very little. Everyone was starving and filthy. There was as no indoor plumbing, no electricity and no air conditioning. I watched my grandmother work from sun up to exhaustion and she slept in her clothes. When she died, her bra strap hooks were rusted from sweat because she never removed it, meaning she hadnā€™t bathed in decades. She was 4-8ā€ and wore a child size medium. She was conditioned to hard work and starvation. She and her family including my mother never overcame the effects of the Depression. She was functionally illiterate despite graduating high school in 1948.
Education stopped at third-fourth grade for the average child because parents were extremely poor and couldnā€™t afford to pay for schooling. School was different then. Teachers lived in a teacherage provided by the school district and earned a living stipend from the state to teach grades 1-4 how to read, write, sign their names, cipher, count money and read a watch. That was the extent of free education. Advanced learning after 4rth grade was taught by subscription very similar to private tutoring. Grades 5-7 were called grade school. Grades 7-12 were called high school. They didnā€™t have Junior High.
In 1935, the Second New Deal created the Works Progress / Projects Administration (WPA) to help people recover from the Depression. A lot of new schools were built during this period. Schools were funded with a combination of state aid and a tax levy called a mill collected from every resident in a school district. When Boomers say they shouldnā€™t have to pay a school tax because they donā€™t have children in school, this is what theyā€™re referring to. They had the right to vote against a tax levy. These days, we call them temporary sales tax increases to fund things like new gym equipment. Everyone inside the school district votes on the increase and everyone inside and outside the district has to pay the sales tax if they shop at a store in the district. These no-voters will shop outside the district if the tax increase passes.
Fast forward to WWII (1939-1945) and the Korean War (1950-1953) and we see a significant decrease in school attendance that results in the closure of many rural schools. Many of this second generation of Boomers grew up in boarding schools and orphanages because their mothers couldnā€™t afford to feed them. This period resulted in a high population of youth being institutionalized. One of my grandmotherā€™s sisters was raped by her uncle at age 14 and was sent to an asylum for the mentally ill. My mother (born 1952) and her sisters were taken by DHS (called CPS today) and sent to a girlā€™s state school after their father died of cirrhosis at the age of 42. He was a bootlegger who literally drank himself to death. Prohibition (1920-1933) was another result of the Depression. It lasted until 1952 in Oklahoma. Forced sterilization in mental institutions was outlawed in 1951 for the sake of medical study. The practice began in 1931 because the state believed that mental illness/retardation was genetic and caused by incest/inbreeding. It runs in my motherā€™s family so I can confirm the state was right. Mutations in the brain can be passed from mother to child.
The third generation of Boomers was born during the Vietnam War (1955-1975). I was born in 1973, so Iā€™m technically Gen X with Boomer influences but not to the point that Iā€™m a raging psycho. I consider those born in the 60s to be the third Boomer generation. My town lost its high school in 1968 and stopped at the eighth grade. All those who graduated from the 60s-1980 are the anti education gatekeepers of the workforce that Iā€™m personally struggling with. These are the people who hate anyone with an education level above theirs. Theyā€™re offended by education unless youā€™re a doctor or a lawyer and they can use you. They are also anti-technology and refuse to use it. They are bullies who are socially enmeshed and always in your business. This generation of women married older men because men their age were fighting in a war. Or, they married wealthy men. Those women didnā€™t have to work and became bored housewives. I blame daytime soap operas for teaching these idiots their horrible social skills. They stayed home almost 24/7 except for when they were at the hair salon or shopping. They wore a lot of makeup too and nail polish contained formaldehyde. The amount of lead and toxic chemicals they were exposed to was very high. My mother was in this category from 1970-1980 when she divorced my father. Men who came home from the war were addicted to heroin and may have turned to cocaine, crack or meth. Many ended up homeless or hooked up with women for the welfare benefits. They were insanely abusive. Very few were able to adjust. Women who did not marry well, had to work cash jobs to support themselves and they might have qualified for USDA commodities and food stamps under Johnsonā€™s War on Poverty (1964). We didnā€™t have welfare reform until 1996. My mother became an alcoholic and was addicted to amphetamines sold as diet pills in the 80s. We had pure meth from 1980 that my stepdad was addicted to and an explosion of brown meth from 1994 to the present. Almost this entire generation and my own Gen X either experimented or became addicted to meth. It affected Millennials too.
Child prostitution as a means of survival and CSA were common during the Depression because there was no law against it and itā€™s something society has difficulty grappling with. Oklahoma passed its first anti-child molestation law in 1945 after the end of WWII. I remember those old Boomer women saying that talk about sex was vulgar and those matters werenā€™t discussed. It was swept under the rug until 1990 when teens finally began to speak out. We had an explosion of violent rape and domestic violence in the 90s by Boomers and chauvinists who couldnā€™t bear to give up their right to sex on demand and beating women.
We got the Department of Education and mandatory attendance in 1980 so Gen X was the first generation to have a well rounded education since 1929. All the generations that came before us are jealous because we also got child labor laws and the statutory rape law. Weā€™re the first generation that didnā€™t have to endure backbreaking work as children. We got easy jobs like paper routes, babysitting and mowing. As teenagers, farm kids hauled hay but thatā€™s about as strenuous as it got. Many Gen Xers got pregnant young and had to drop out of school or couldnā€™t go to college. They had to get married and raise a family. Iā€™m struggling with this portion of my generation being jealous as well.
I think Gen Z is the best generation because they are so far removed from the absolute hell that previous generations went through. They have the best education, the best social skills and are the most well adjusted of all the generations that came before them. Gen X just needs to teach yaā€™ll life skills and survival skills that you can hand down to Gen Alpha.

2024.05.14 12:20 Zealousideal_Poet533 I think I'm done with cs2.

I am by no means a pro or a sweaty gamer that ranks super high. Been playing cs on and off since 1.5. All together have around 1000 hours give or take in the last 20 years. Life happens and you move on plus the game gets stale after a while for me. Its literally the same game and maps with slight cosmetic changes.
Last time I played was in 2017 - bought some skins spent like 300 hours and was decent the game was enjoyable.
Was super bored so started playing cs2 a month ago. Naturally I was pretty bad and that was expected after several year gap. But like anything you improve over time and with consistency. Found some friends to play with online too.
This has been said before but the state of the game with cheaters and broken ranking system make this game unenjoyable.
Yesterday was the worst day I had after having one of the longest winning streaks the day before. I played 7 matches.
13-2 0-13 3-13 0-13 13-10 0-13 10-13
I am not accusing everyone of those lobbys to have a cheat but when they skill difference is so great that you get instant headshoted. Basically not even a mili second to react and they know exactly where you are sneaking up on them by peaking around a corner they are not supposed to be camping everytime. It just feels off. Either these players are elite and stuck in 4k lobbies with me or most of them are cheating.
The last game was the worst - I didnt know using a scoped rifle like an AUG is looked down upon like the automatic sniper. Basically we went 5-0 up the other team was visibly shit - taking long time to react and dying instantly. Then 3 of them who were in a stack were like AUG? you wanna us AUG ey? And basically turned into Gods. Won almost every round without losing a player. Kept saying use more AUGs use more AUGs when they are the one blatantly cheating.
Like I lost so bad yesterday that its made me start hating the game. Im gonna cashout all my skins and peace the fuck out.
This game can be fun if valve gave a f about the experience. I mean the ranking and the cheaters just makes this a miserable experience. Aint no way I am spending hours of my day gaming and then feeling worse off then I did before I started. I game to feel good and enjoy myself this shit is just pathetic.

2024.05.14 12:19 bestboopnow Magic-focused MC

I'm craving the itch for MAGIC
Too many MCs are gettin' in there with their fists and stuff, nah, that ain't it. Gimme some goddayumn spell-slinging mofo that stands at the back and uses weird obscure ways of using the magic or uses a ritual to break the world or smth, I don't care I just need magic it's been too long since I've read some.
Here's what I've read: (feel free to use as recommendations) (I listen to audiobooks for everything)
I'm feel bad for saying negative things so I couldn't, they are all pretty good at least, if in different areas, I've listened to bad stuff, none of these are awful
This does not include semi-magic-wielding MCs, pure magic, or at least pure-magic focused. Not including things like MCs that mainly sling magic guns and not a wide variety of magic tools. Not including dungeon core.
I have about 200~ titles in my library, don't think that just because this list is long I listen to mostly magic stuff, I don't, although I wish I did

2024.05.14 12:05 Bonegirl06 The Sad Fate of the Sports Parent

A true sports parent dies twice. Thereā€™s the death that awaits us all at the end of a long or short life, the result of illness, misadventure, fire, falling object, hydroplaning car, or derailing train. But there is also the death that comes in the midst of life, the purgatorial purposelessness that follows the final season on the sidelines or in the bleachers, when your sports kid hangs up their skates, cleats, or spikes after that last game.
The passage of time is woeful, and, for a parent, living your dreams through the progress of your progeny is as inevitable as the turning of the Earth. But the sports parent lives the experience in concentrateā€”a more intense version of the common predicament. You must give up your vicarious hope of big-league glory and let it die. You must part from what, if your kid pursued his passion seriously, had become a routine of away games and early-morning practices, hours in the car, a hot cup of coffee in your cold hand as the sun rose above the Wonderland of Ice, in Bridgeport, Connecticut; the Ice Arena in Brewster, New York; the Ice Vault, in Wayne, New Jerseyā€”home of the Hitmen, whose logo is a pin-striped gangster with a hockey stick. And youā€™ll suddenly find yourself watching the Stanley Cup playoffs not in the way of a civilian but with the chagrin of knowing that the gameā€™s upper ranks will never include your kid.
One recent morning, courtesy of Facebook Memories, I came across an old picture of my son, a high-school junior who recently announced his decision to quit hockeyā€”to retire! The photo was taken by teammates after a victory at Lake Placid, New York. Sweat-soaked, draped in the arms of friends, grinning like a thief, he looked no less ecstatic than Mike Eruzione after he and his team won Olympic gold in the same arena in 1980.
And me? I was this Eruzioneā€™s old man, waiting with the other parents outside the locker room, experiencing a moment of satisfaction greater than any other Iā€™d known, either as a player or as a fan. I was a car in park with the accelerator pressed to the floor. I was a wall bathed in sunlight. This win was better than the Illinois State Championship I won with the Deerfield Falcons, in 1977. It was better than the Bearsā€™ 1986 Super Bowl victory.
Bearsā€™ 1986 Super Bowl victory.
Read: I thought Iā€™d found a cheat code for parenting
The end began like this: One evening, after the last game of the high-school season, I asked my son if heā€™d be trying out for spring league. For a youth-hockey kid, playing spring league is the equivalent of a minor-league pitcher playing winter ball in Mexicoā€”so necessary as a statement of intent and means of improvement that forgoing it is like giving up ā€œthe path.ā€ Rather than a simple affirmative nod, as Iā€™d expected, I got these words: ā€œIā€™m going to think about it.ā€ Think about it? For me, this was the same as a girlfriend saying, ā€œWe need to talk.ā€
Only later did I realize that those words were the first move in a careful choreography. My son wanted to quit, but in a way that would not break my heart. He also didnā€™t want me to rant and rave and try to talk him out of it.
We had reversed roles. He was the adult. I was the child.
He knew he would not be playing college hockey even if he could. With this in mind, he had decided to use his final year of high school to get to know people other than hockey players and spend time in places other than hockey rinks. In the way of a pro with iffy knees nearing the age of 35, he had decided to exit on his own terms. He was not worrying about losing his identity as a player or about missing the camaraderie of the locker room; he was worrying about me. Hockey had been an entire epoch of our father-son life. It had ushered me, the sports parent, out of my 30s, through my 40s, and into my 50s.
.... Because I am human, I tend to blame entities or systems or other people for things that strike me as unfair. As my son progressed, I caught a glimpse, for one fabulous, deluded moment, of the life that he (we, I) would never live: high-school athletic stardom followed by college triumph and possibly even a professional-hockey career. That I knew this was a fantasyā€”he was never that goodā€”did not make it less powerful. Lost in it, I experienced my life as an NHL fan with new intensity. I was not just watching the Blackhawks; I was scouting, picking up tricks that I could pass to my glory-bound boy. This was a dream that I was too embarrassed to share with anyone, even my wife. I regarded it the way members of the Free French regarded the liberation of Paris: Think of it always; speak of it never. In short, I lost my way. Rather than letting him enjoy the moment and the fact that these seasons were his career, not a preparation or a path toward one, I was constantly scheming about his next move, his next opportunity, his next shot at the big time.
Hereā€™s the worst part: I knew exactly what I was doing. I was attempting to replace my kidā€™s will with my own. I knew that it was wrong and, worse, counterproductive. The more I pressed, the less he enjoyed the game. The less he enjoyed the game, the worse he played. The worse he played, the more I pressed. Economists call this a negative feedback loop. I knew it but could not stop. It was psychosis.
Maybe the most notorious sports parents suffer from a shared psychological condition. LaVar Ball, Emmanuel Agassi, Earl Woodsā€”those sports dads were all obsessed to the point of being abusive. I prefer to think that I am not; yet, for all the varying degrees of our kidā€™s success, our predicament is the same. At some point, even if it comes after 20 years in the pros, the set will be rolled away, revealing our true location. Rink parking lot. Beat-up vehicle. Alone. Even the child prodigies will retire.
