2024.05.13 22:25 Government-Monkey Maybe my standards are a bit high. But I'm disappointed by the quality of the models in the collectors edition.
So a little background: I enjoy building a lot of Gunpla and have played Homeworld since I was a kid. Missed out on the collector's edition of the remaster so had to get this one. But I'm disappointed by a few things. submitted by Government-Monkey to homeworld [link] [comments]

2024.05.13 05:53 ragefury32 Brickmania F-105D - review and variants...
Note: Brickmania has been private for at least a year, and their moderators haven't lifted restrictions, so, I guess we'll just have to discuss it here. submitted by ragefury32 to DigitalLego [link] [comments] So, the boys at Brickmania have just recently "declassified" their F-105 Thunderchief, and considering that it was one of their better designs, well, I went ahead and snapped it up using some credit card reward points. That's several years in the making, the 'chief... The usual Brickmania digital instructions are usually done well, but it does continue their "break this off into sub-assembly" traits where you'll need to figure out what components are used in a particular assembly (I wish they have a sub-assembly parts call-out) and how they should be assembled. Considering that I almost always do the assembly electronically to do test-fitting, well, this required some serious guessing. For example, the windscreen/flight console in step 8? Would be nice if I didn't have to spend 90 minutes second guessing the windscreen mount angles since fitting it onto the Bricklink studios model was a royal pain... Yes, I deliberately made this image blurry, because, you know, plagiarism is a thing and people seem to enjoy being parasitic mooches. That being said, the resulting model does speak for itself... Front Side Portside profile view Of course, having an electronic model does give you a very precise idea of the inventory required for Bricklink parts purchase... Including the stand? That's 1592 parts in 284 lots, and assuming 3-4 sellers, you are paying 240-260 USD for the design. So if you send this inventory directly to Bricklink for purchasing? Well, chances are, it'll likely fail, since the Slope 45 with 2/3 cutout (92946) in Olive Green and the Inverted Slope 45 2x1 (3665) in Dark Green are not easy to get a hold of. Either the Bricklink fulfillment engine fails (even with new/used checked to any) or you might have to deal with specialist parts dealers, which tends to drive up the prices due to minimum parts/lots purchasing requirements. So, what's a potential remedy? Well, you could do some recoloring. For example, I went ahead and reduced the olive green elements in the design by switching it out with regular green, and combined some lots. Also, the Sidewinder missiles were very subtly redesigned... Despite adding a few extra pieces, the number of unique lots went down by 20, which can actually help you overall since less unique lots can mean one or 2 less sellers to fulfill the order... Okay, can we do even more? Well, I swapped out the bombs (which are M117-like) for Mk. 82s, which are similar to the ones on my existing A-4E. Note that the drop tank fins are recolored. So I actually spent the money and built it as a v2.5 model, with some parts swaps and recolors. Total price was roughly 218 USD including shipping/handling and sales taxes for 2 vendors. The decals from Brickmania are an extra 13 bucks. Not bad...? Of course, one of the stated reasons why Brickmania made this a limited release is because the number of green tiles are limited and likely not to go up (well, the Lego Botanical sets did push green tile availability back up). But...can we go grey like the early Thunderchiefs? Yes you can - in fact, since the tiles and bricks are all one of 3 colors, the number of unique lots will go down significantly. Note that this is a single re-color of the existing pieces - and many of the arrangements are not symmetrical, nor are you eliminating overly complex tiling/brick assemblies. If you take those into account you might be able to bring the lot numbers down even more. Also, note that paradoxically, the pricing on the plane might jump up a tad bit since 2x2 curved slopes (15068) and 2x1 curved slopes (11477) are also very common in modern plane MOCs, so demand for them are fairly high. The price floor for 2x2 curved slopes are 0.13 USD per piece for most colors (that's Lego's own price picker) while Bricklink resellers tend to charge about 0.20 USD per piece for light bluish grey. So then, the question begins...can we modify for more features? Well, here's v2.6, which features a large central fuel tank substituting the multi-ejector rack with a large fuel tank, and one of the sidewinder pairs were swapped out for an ALQ-87 ECM jammer pod, which is used to deal with the Fan Song radars of SA-2 Missile batteries. The additional pieces did add some costs back... This of course meant that further work 'should' be done - for example, the wing pylons are often fitted with MELs to carry bombs if it's a short range mission. For example, here we have a heavily laden F-105D with 6 M117 bombs in the center, 4 on each inboard pylons, an ALQ-87 on the starboard outboard, and one more M117 on the port outboard pylons. That's 15 x 750 lb of American freedom ready to free some VCs from the mortal realm. Note that the MERs on the inner wing pylons are also "drooped" for maximum commonality with the centerline pylon... Didn't cost that much more due to centerline / inboard pylon design commonalities. What about switching it to Mk. 82s? Yeah, the plane is even cheaper...? Well, that also begs yet anoher question...what if we have a later paint scheme, like the one that is applied to Air Force Reserve Thunderchiefs in the 1970s? Lot count goes down, but the price goes up by a little... There is a further modified version of the F-105D which was given an avionics kit for even better all weather attack capabilities (aka the Thunderstick II) via a larger fuselage hump, but unfortunately it did not see combat in Southeast Asia. Only 30 airframes were given the upgrades. Note the taller hump above the fuselage What about other variants of the "chief"? For example, here's the shorter nose, early model F-105Bs, which were infamously used by the Thunderbirds until one split apart during a practice flight. Most had structural defects and were retired in the mid-1960s. Note the slightly shorter nose, and the early Republic clamshell canopies with the shoulder windows. Of course, if we crank back the time we could look at the original YF-105A Thunderchief, which does not have the sugar-scoop intake or the airbrake paddles, and features a smaller tailfin. That's one of 2 YF-105As ever built. Due to the smaller airframe, smaller tailfin, no stores/pylons and simpler tail design, this had a much cheaper price tag. I'll ballpark it at 160 or so with real Legos, and probably 90 or so if you go Webrick. Of course, that does beg the question...what happens if you want an F-105G Wild Weasel II? Well, you'll need to start with an F-105F first, then add the AGM-45 Shrike missiles (derived from the AIM-7 Sparrow Airframe), the AGM-78 Standard ARM missile (derived from the RIM-66 Standard shipboard SAM), the wingtip missile warning receivers and you'll need to add the under-fuselage bulges for the jammer pod integration... Don't get excited - this is only a \"planner\". Fortunately it doesn't look like the grey version will be that much more expensive... But that'll need to be a crapload of work to get it working. |
