Daughter bit by a dog in Mexico, antibiotics help?

2024.05.09 19:29 orisonofjmo Daughter bit by a dog in Mexico, antibiotics help?

Hi all...
Coming here for advice since our travel insurance doesn't offer 2nd opinion services.
Yesterday evening my daughter (6yr old female, 21 kg, no known allergies) was bit in the face by a small pet dog (apparently the dog is up to date on shots). She has a few very deep lacerations on her nose. We took her to a clinic last night and the dr advised no sutures needed but prescribed her antibiotics.
She took one dose before bed and one this morning. All morning she seemed pale, faint, and extremely low energy, but we attributed it to the trauma + altitude... however, a few hours after her dose this morning she projectile vomited... A TON. More liquid than I thought was possible to fit in her little body.
My concern now is that she needs a different dose of antibiotic or a different antibiotc all together. I don't want her vomiting like this in this heat, dehydration is already a concern.
She has no fever. Her energy has rebounded a bit after being sick.
This is what we have: Amoxicilinia Clavulanato 500/125mg tablets, half a tablet every 12 hours.
Should we go back to the clinic or just the pharmacy and ask for something else? It's hard to know what to do when we don't speak the language, and I'd like to feel somewhat informed.
We can't have her sick like this after every dose. We don't fly back to the UK until next Monday evening.
Thanks in advance.

2024.05.05 15:52 I_Will_Bite_My_Thumb Macrogol Taste

I've been prescribed macrogol for the long term to deal with medication that slows bowel movements. It's for one 13.125mg sachet every day. It seems to be working great but I just can't get over the taste. It's usually the Laxido Orange flavour which is definitely worse that the unflavoured Molaxole.
I've tried a bunch of solutions, fruit syrups, using different liquids, using different dilutions, downing the whole thing. No matter what I try, it's like drinking pool water.
Does anyone have any suggestions for making it more palatable?

2024.04.18 22:04 SuperHeatherNova Liquid Bowel Movements only x5 days with floating white flecks in bowl

F40, 5"2, 155lbs, White
Medications: Nizatidine 75mg twice a day, (started two weeks ago, previously 15mg Prevacid one a day for 3 years) 125mg L-Theanine at night, sometimes magnesium if I remember.
No alcohol or recreational drugs.
Conditions: GERD (currently not properly controlled at present or responding to current treatment)
Sunday afternoon mild abdominal cramping out of nowhere and then suddenly watery bowel movement. Happened 5 times. Once I did not make it to the bathroom. Chills and Mild elevated temp of 99.9. Cool, figured stomach bug.
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday liquid movements continued but only in first two hours after waking. Not same urgency as day one. From around 7am-9am each day lots of loud gurgling and roiling sounds and the repeated movements (4-5) liquid only. Running very faint/pale. Like when you're halfway through colonoscopy prep.
Almost gnawing or inflammatory pain in upper right abdomen and mid back. I've had this pain on and off for over ten years. Never with bowel symptoms. Pain got better over first couple of days.
Today, Thursday, again 4 times between 8am-10am, but then started again this afternoon (4 times so far). Gurgling very loud and uncomfortable.
Today I looked in the toilet bowl and see what look like white, fibrous flecks floating in the water. (*Brain says parasite, but smarter than me Docs say?) They have been there every movement today (8 so far).
Since Monday I have eaten: chicken soup with brown rice and carrots, oat bran cereal with blueberries, a turkey sandwich with lettuce, roast chicken and potatoes, toast with peanut butter, bananas, scrambled egg. (Drinking hydralyte, gatorade, coconut water, and ginger tea)
Checked in with a doc this morning who said "viral, wait it out"
Wondering at what point is stool test or other testing warranted? Can it be a stomach bug with no vomiting or fever? How can my bowel movements continue to be liquid despite eating bulking things? What else can this be or is just an a-typical stomach bug?

2024.04.14 18:42 LemmeThinkAboutIt333 Liquid iron, low ferritin

I have been feeling so terrible lately and realized my ferritin is at 13. I took my first dose of liquid iron yesterday, 125mg. Well, a half an hour went by and I still felt terrible and then at the 45 minute mark I felt AMAZING. More energy than I’ve had in probably 2 years, brain fog lifted like a cloud, and no issues with lightheadedness. Took the same thing this morning and now I feel terrible again. Any advice on what I’m doing wrong? Or does it just take a while to build up stores?

2024.03.31 01:09 danceswithmooses212 Iron Overdose in Toddler?

My daughter (17m, 25.9lbs) was diagnosed with anemia this week and prescribed an oral dose of iron in liquid form. That pharmacy was out of their supply and recommended I order Nova Ferrum High Potency 125mg/5ml as it was the same dose as what was prescribed. I gave her 5ml per the instructions on the bottle and in hindsight noticed she was only prescribed a dose of 2ml.
Poison control advised to watch for symptoms as she is acting fine, however, I wanted to try and get a second opinion as I am unable to reach her pediatrician after hours over this holiday weekend.

2024.03.25 16:10 degarmeauxkneaux I am an 'OLD' Mom - so maybe I am scaring myself into feeling like I need to have supplements...so far, on other subs, most people are telling me I don't need any of this stuff. I'm now at a crossroads.

Do I really need all this?!
Surely, I can cut something out?
I’m an average 42WF with no chronic health problems aside from some environmental allergies. I have a 5 year old and a 15 year old.... I'd like to stick around a while.
I'd like to streamline my supplements as best I can by only taking the most beneficial.
Is there anything doing the same thing or is there anything that seems to be too large of a dose? (The collagen is 6 horse pills for the dose - seems like a lot. 🤷🏼‍♀️)

Can any one give me some solid advice?
So much information and conflicting opinions these days… I appreciate the help navigating!

2024.03.01 15:45 lexiurie magnesium citrate stopped working?

For context, I have not been diagnosed with IBS-C or IBS in general.
I've been having issues with constipation dating back to Feb 2023. It all happened out of nowhere and ever since I've been having issues going to the bathroom. My last low point was Nov 2023. After that, I started taking 125mg of magnesium citrate along with vitamin D, and I became the most regular I have ever been since my issues started. Around 2 weeks ago, my bowel movements went from firm bulky normal stool to tiny soft pieces that clearly did not match the amount of food I was eating. I tried to drink a bottle of liquid magnesium citrate, as that worked for me in the past, however this time around I don't think it fully cleared me out. Since then, been able to pass barely any stool. Last Monday, I finally had a "normal" bm but knew I was still backed up. Then tuesday, I tried a dulcolax suppository which barely did nothing. Then I took dulcolax pill (2) which did provide some relief, but I know I am still backed up and full of gas since my colon is super hard and when I sit down, strain or move my left side around my colon will be very uncomfortable. I've tried miralax in the past, and although I am away at college I try to eat the best I can (avoiding dairy, was mostly gf but started to add back into my diet when my routine was working). I haven't been able to meet with my GI in person but he wants to prescribe me linzess. I don't know how I feel about that, because without stimulant laxatives (which I don't really want to gain a dependency to), I was able to go back to having normal bm for some time. But after approx. 2 months of mag citrate and vitamin D along with exercise, water, and eating mostly healthy it suddenly stopped working. I'm stil backed up and bloated without even eating anything. Any suggestions? Do I go on Linzess? I'm scared of the side effects I've seen people share.

2024.02.29 23:38 hair_forever NMN with TMG

Hi All,
31M here.
I have some NMN tablets from Renue by Science that I bought last year January. It is not expired yet and I am planning to restart taking it.
I do not want to take TMG as it will be an extra addition to my long list of supplements:
  1. Pure Encapsulations All in One Multivitamin - only one capsule per day ( 20% RDA of B9 is achieved from this 1 capsule )
  2. Zinc histidine - 15mg or 30mg per day
  3. Vitamin C - 500mg per day
  4. Vitamin D 2000 IU with 80 mg K2
  5. Pterostilbene 50mg
  6. Carlson Omega 3 fish oil liquid ( triglyceride form ) - 2.5ml which is roughly 800mg of Omega 3
  7. Collagen Peptide powder
  8. Apple Cider Vinegar
Is it okay to skip TMG when on NMN ?. I am planning to take only 125mg or max 250mg NMN per day ( before workout )
Can I full my folate needs from some food sources ( given the fact that 20% I am getting in the multivitamin already )
Thanks in advance

2024.02.28 00:18 craftylady1031 Hello first time diagnosis and looking for some info

Had to go to the ER last Thursday with horrible lower left quadrant pain, diagnosed with diverticulitis. I usually avoid antibiotics like the plague but knowing how dangerous this could be, I am going ahead and taking them (AMOXI-CLAV875-125MG). I have GERD and the nausea from the pills is quite a challenge. There isn't a whole lot I can eat, nobody at the ER said anything about a liquid diet so I'm mostly eating white rice, steamed veggies, and chickpeas. I've been a bit better each day, the pain is almost completely gone but I feel like today has been a setback. Generally feeling tired, fretful, and slightly feverish with some sweating. Temp is not elevated significantly. I did do a few routine chores around the house this morning for the first time. I've been trying to get in with my gastro for a follow-up but can't get in before May!
Anyway, I think what I'm asking is did I bring this on by doing some chores this morning? I made the bed, took care of breakfast and letting them out for our three chihuahuas, swept a bit of one small floor, and made the bed. Is this too much? Should I be doing nothing but resting and eating well? My husband does all the cooking. Thank you any help anyone can offer.

2024.02.19 20:11 purpleplatypus786 Have I been consuming carcinogenic benzoate because of my liquid Iron supplement and vitamin C supplement ?

So I found out I had extremely low ferritin a couple months ago and started taking iron in October. In January 2024 I switched to a liquid supplement that had higher potency (125 mg) and took two servings every night so I was basically getting 250 mg every night. The liquid supplement is called NovaFerrum 125mg in case anyone is interested. About a month ago I started taking Vitamin C (500mg) gummies every night before/ sometimes after the liquid iron supplement however the liquid iron supplement has SODIUM BENZOATE. I read that when mixing sodium benzoate and vitamin C when there is a metal (like IRON, which is the supplement) that created carcinogenic benzoate. I’ve been taking this combo for about a month and I was just wondering if I was basically consuming cancer. I’m going to stop taking vitamin C but I’m just wondering if I should discontinue the use of this iron supplement even though it’s helped. Also should I get tested for cancer ?? That sounds dumb but idk how to go about now knowing I’ve been exposing myself to a carcinogenic.

2024.02.19 08:35 purpleplatypus786 Have I been consuming a Cancerous carcinogenic with my Iron supplement and Vitamin C?

I (21F, 5’3, 90 pounds, no medications outside of Iron and vitamin supplements or any history of illness) have been very low on ferritin so have been taking a liquid iron supplement I found on Amazon called NovaFerrum 125mg. I think it’s great bc it’s so high potency and my ferritin is very low (it was at a 6 in October 2023 not sure if the measurement units that’s in but extremely low , my iron is low but still within the acceptable range I think) so I’ve been taking double the serving so I can get 250 mg every night. I’ve been doing this for about 2.5 months now, and about a month ago I started taking 500 mg of vitamin c gummies every night with it since. I heard that aids in absorption. Now this iron supplement has sodium benzoate which I recently found out can create a carcinogen when mixed with Vitamin C(and the actual metal iron) .Have I basically been drinking/eating cancer for a month ? I’m terrified and should I get tested for cancer ?? I sound dumb right now but I’m so scared. What are my next steps I should take ? Should I also stop taking this supplement?

2024.02.19 05:55 Popular-Cut3410 Recurrent C-diff 2022-2024

Hey Everyone! I’ve been battling recurrent c-diff infections every since July 2022. I am wondering if anyone has similar experience & any advice?
I am currently a 25 Y.O female.
The start: I tested positive for dormant tuberculosis and put on antibiotics (isoniazid) for 9 months. Around the 6 month mark - I was attacked by a neighbors dog and put on amoxicillin w/ clav for the wound I received. However, the urgent care had stitched up my wound and this caused further infection — i was then placed on clindamycin & cephalexin at the same time. A couple weeks go by and sure enough I get c-diff! I took two weeks of vanco & within a week c diff had came back (keep in mind i am still on medication for dormant tb). I was then placed on Falgyl — can’t remember period but after finishing that the c diff had came back a couple of weeks later.
The abd pain was absolutely miserable that I had ended up vomiting and hard time keeping liquids down so then I went to the ER for my third infection. They did a CT and the doctor informed me that my colon looks inflamed and that I may have UC or crohns. After this visit I was put back on vancomycin and sent to infectious disease.
My PCP suggested GI doctor but because of my dormant tuberculosis medication I was sent to infectious disease.
I.D. put me on vanco 125 mg for three months and states that: 1. Probiotics do not help as it is not replenishing the bacteria that i am needing in my gut— is this true for those who experience c diff and tried probiotics? 2. That if this round did not work - he would double the dosage from vanco 125mg to 250mg and instead of 3 months, i would go for 6 months. 3. He states that once my infection clears and in the first year of being done with the vanco that if I were to ever go on antibiotics that I must be put back on vancomycin for the duration of the antibiotics as well as another two weeks after.
Long story short — after finishing my three months, my cdiff infection came back so we decided to try the 6 months of 250 mg vanco. (I am officially off TB meds by this point)
I ended up finishing antibiotics in August of 2023 and had no symptoms (yay!) but I noticed I had dropped 10 lbs pretty much randomly towards the last month of finishing vanco. I have never lost weight and always stayed a very consistent weight. I played college sports and my diet never changed. I also noticed there was a ton of mucus in my stool and I was constipated . I messaged my primary care and she sent me a referral to GI.
Sept 2023- I visit a GI NP and slowly explained what I have endured over the last year 1/2. She immediately placed me for to have a colonoscopy considering the CT scan I had at the ER showed inflammation and maybe I just had some sort of bowel disease.
October 2023- I go in for my colonoscopy and it comes back completely normal. They even did an endoscopy to take biopsy’s which also came back normal. However, a couple days go by and I immediately notice I have a UTI so I go to urgent care to get prescribed antibiotics. I tell my ID doctor and he prescribed vanco 250mg for the duration of the antibiotics (10 days) and two weeks after antibiotics are finished
Beginning Dec 2023- My c diff came back. I immediately messaged my ID. He puts me on vancomycin 250mg for a month.
Beginning of January 2024- Before i even finish my vanco course, I get strep, which means I get put back on antibiotics (amoxicillin) and my ID doctor prescribes me another month of vancomycin.
February 2024 - I am currently about to finish my vancomycin.
I feel like I cannot get healthy and that my immune system is completely shocked.
Is there a thing of too much vancomycin? Taking antibiotics every 6 hours has been exhausting.
Should I stop seeing my ID doctor and visit GI instead for my gut infection?
Should I try to take probiotics?
Any tips or similar experiences??
While my cdiff infection is active - my abd pain is extremely painful. Is this common?
Thank you so much for listening. It is hard to explain to my family what is going on and I could really use support.

2024.02.18 10:42 buttholeitchyguy Feeling tired, out of it, low body temp. Sepsis?

Age: 29
Sex: Make
Tobacco user: yes
Currently taking: Azithromycin 250mg
Went to the clinic about itchy ears and was prescribed amoxicillin 125mg.
About 5 days into that treatment I started getting bad diarrhea (2-3 Bowel movements a day, generally entirely liquid) and stomach pains. My ears started feeling better so I stopped taking it and went to the clinic again about the stomach issues. The doc informed me I was probably just experiencing bad side effects from the amoxicillin and prescribed me azithromycin for my ears which I decided not to take up until yesterday (approx. 3 days off all antibiotics) so my stomach could recover.
Fast forward to now. My ears were driving me insane so yesterday I started the first dose of azithromycin. Instantly my stomach churned and the diarrhea was back albeit only one bm so far since and it wasn’t entirely liquid. Now I’m feeling really tired and out of it in general, I felt cold and took my oral temperature with two different thermometers both reading 95-95.5 F which seemed low, should I be worried here? Kind of freaking out that this could be sepsis.
Also is there any alternative treatment for the ears? It seems like antibiotics just destroy me.

2024.02.15 00:55 Giantdwarfshit Think I might have c. dif should I go back to the hospital or wait it out?

29m. Went to the walk-in clinic for ear infection like symptoms and was prescribed 125mg amoxicillin. Ever since I started taking it i've had loose/watery diarrhea, stomach issues, and loss of appetite. I stopped taking it as soon as this started happening. I took it for about 3 days total.
I went to the walk in clinic again about these symptoms and the doctor told me I was having a bad reaction to the type of amoxicillin I was given and she prescribed me a new antibiotic for my ear. I haven't taken it as I am paranoid now about my stomach issues and my ears havent been giving me trouble. It's been almost 2 days since I stopped taking the amoxicillin and i'm seeing no improvement with my diarrhea and stomach irritation. I forced some food down today and immediately had two liquid bowel movements. What should I do?

2024.01.31 11:21 RinkyInky How to dose LDN properly?

It came in liquid form with a syringe but it seems that even in a syringe it’s tough to accurately dose 0.05ml (0.125mg) of this stuff. When I dip the syringe in and pull up the syringe, it’s still dripping of the sides of the syringe, some drops drip out the syringe hole etc.
Any advice on how to cleanly measure and take it or does it not matter?
