2024.05.24 00:28 kpdeadwolf As an autistic woman: Fern Brady, thank you

I’m in my early 20s and was only recently diagnosed a few months ago. I was properly diagnosed with ADHD as a child and that gave me some peace of mind, because at least there was something specific wrong that I could put a name to. But still I felt like there was something more wrong with me, and I didn’t know what it was or why no one else seemed to have the same problems - until I got diagnosed with autism, and that’s been genuinely life-changing.
I’ve been binging Taskmaster and finally got to Series 14. Fern easily and immediately shot to the top of my list of my favorite contestants, because I found something about the way she carried herself so relatable, but I didn’t know why until I found out she’s autistic too. Ep. 9, with her bottle opener prize and cat monologue in Munya’s play task, was what really got me, because they were so authentic in a way that I often find myself too scared to be, and yet everyone else responded so positively! It was the kind of thing I’d assumed would never be possible for me. I’ve had so many moments after diagnosis where I wondered whether I’d ever be able to “fit in” with normal society, and a few times when admittedly I would feel resentful for my autism making things so much harder. Even if I know for a fact that my autism is a huge reason why I’m good at my very specific job, which I love it because it feels like the thing I was made to do: that’s still something that’s hard to remember and appreciate when every conversation still feels like a puzzle I’m too dumb to solve, yet everyone else seems to have no problem at all and just laughs or stares whenever I break a rule I didn’t even know existed.
Having discovered it after listening to her episode on the Taskmaster Podcast, I recently finished reading Fern’s book, Strong Female Character, and it was so incredible to see a public figure describing these same experiences that I’ve never seen anyone else articulate. My childhood wasn’t nearly as tumultuous as Fern’s but the whole experience of seemingly outwardly studious and high-achieving, and so no one takes you seriously when you keep telling them something is wrong and just assumes you’re manipulative or bad when you’re mostly just confused or upset, is dead-on for me, and it’s unexpectedly validating to read that someone else has gone through the same thing.
All of that is to say: I’m so, so grateful that I discovered this book and have already marked down a lot of the resources it references for later reading, but I would have never known about it if Taskmaster hadn’t given Fern Brady a platform to be her authentic self in a way that made it halfway across the world to me in Los Angeles (yes, I am devastated that I didn’t discover her in time to attend her show here just earlier this month). I know that Fern sometimes lurks in this sub so if you see this, I’m so genuinely thankful for you being so outspoken but also so chill about your autism. One of the things I’ve been struggling with is reconciling how my autism has affected every single moment of my life with how I also don’t want it to be the only part of me that other people see; and in classic autistic fashion, I’ve already been looking to you and your book as a guide on how to do that. And thank you so much to LAH and the Taskmaster team for making such a wonderful show that’s so welcoming and joyful that it allows for fans like me to have experiences like this.
As a wise, Scottish cat once said, “We all seek meaning in our lives, no matter how trivial it looks on the outside.” Taskmaster may seem trivial, even ridiculous and insane, from the outside, but I feel like it’s also a stunning example of the importance of diversity and reputation because of how much it can mean to people in the audience, and for that I’m eternally grateful.
(I’m less grateful to TM for eternally traumatizing me with Mike Wozniak by ensuring I can never look at a casserole the same way again, but given the rest of my post, I’m willing to write that one off.)

2024.05.24 00:26 g3thic [F4A][Literate] Roleplay Search!

Hello again! I’m not sure if you’ve seen my other posts about a fandom roleplay but this one is gonna be about any roleplay in general, fandoms included. This’ll be pretty detailed and I’ll let you know the parts if you want to skip ahead (I suggest you don’t). If you don’t wanna read all of this, then don’t. This was made for people willing to read blocks of paragraphs and maybe even respond with their own.
INTRODUCTION
My name is Hina. To know more about me, I hail from Japan and I have been an avid writer ever since I moved to the States when I was 11. My second language is English but I believe it’s been pretty good. I recently turned 22 years old and I'm female. Talking about age, I would be comfortable with you being 17+ and preferably at least 20. Roleplaying with minors isn’t a big thing for me, I apologize. I’m in the west coast, PST timezone. Let’s see.. What other information can I give you? I would say I enjoy skating, basketball, watching tv shows and anime, and reading. My favorite anime is Nana and Death Note.
GENRES + FANDOM
I am not looking for a specific roleplay. I would say i’m skilled in all genres. Sci-fi, fantasy, horror, apocalypse. All of that. Even slice of life, though that depends on what type of plot exactly. To be more specific on each genre, starting off with fantasy, I'm more used to high fantasy and mythology. I’m not that great with medieval, unfortunately. DnD based role plays aren’t really fit for me and I struggle playing with species like ogres. Just putting that out here. For fantasy, I don’t have any specific ideas.
Sci-fi is the genre I have more skill in. Most of my roleplays are based off of them! Specifically, I’m fine with all subgenres of that.
For other genres like horror and apocalypse, I do have some taste. I really like monsters and creepy things from the horror genre like vampires and all of that and I even have my own idea set up in older times dealing with vampire lords and hunters and all of that. I also enjoy eldritch type horror. I also like that one sun genre of it, like video game horror? I’m not sure how to describe it. I also forgot if it even has an official name or if it’s just something used to describe the horror genre. I like Resident Evil, so maybe that’ll tell you the type of horror I usually enjoy. I do have a developed idea of something more eldritch horror.
More on fandoms! To get some other things down, I usually only play OC unless the character you want me to play is one I know more about and I'm more comfortable playing. The fandoms I like in the more anime way are Jojo’s, Nana, Death Note, JJK, AOT, Haikyuu, and probably more. I’m well versed in the Jojo’s, Aot, and JJK fandoms but less knowledgeable on Death Note since i’ve only seen it once. Other fandoms i’m in include ATLA, TLOK, Harry Potter, Resident Evil, Marvel, DC, and many more.
CHARACTERS
I tend to use character sheets to describe my character, these usually consist of names, background, and personality. More so on appearances, I prefer using animated or drawn references than real life people. I enjoy good enough references where I get the idea of how the character would look like.
The types of characters I write are either the lone wolf type that has some sad past which leads them to want to join someone for a redemption arc or the bubbly character who is the one that brings the mood up and is usually seen as trustworthy and of that kind.
I like all types of tropes, especially enemies to lovers or rivalry. I also really enjoy opposites attract as a whole from either opposite personality or something else they would be opposites in. Enemies to lovers takes my heart, though. I love seeing the characters go past the urge to ultimately hate each other and/or go past their usual way of disliking the others lineage or upcoming.
REQUIREMENT
I think this is my last paragraph on the roleplay. It’s the most important, at least. Requirements. All roleplay searches come with them. Or at least that’s what I heard! But don’t fret, there isn’t much.
I’ve seen this as one of the most used requirements, and I agree with it. As someone who’s first language wasn’t English, I understand that you may not be great at it. But please, I do require a partner that at least has proper use of grammar and punctuation. You don’t even have to use big words or anything, just at least know where to put your periods and the placement of your words.
My second requirement is for you to be LITERATE! Please. I’m a big writer, I tend to ramble on and tend to write more than what I thought I would. (like i’m doing right now) I write multiple paragraphs from the starter until the scene relaxes. I also understand that sometimes writing big blocks of words every response is tiring or boring so I don’t expect it all the time, at least after the starter has been made and in more important scenes. Dialogue also cuts my replies shorter.
Please please please be polite in OOC! We may just be role playing together but kindness goes all ways. If we do include OOC, I enjoy talking about many things. My day, movies, games, funny moments and stories, all of that!
I think that’s the end to this wonderful journey of an ad about my search. I hope you are still here, fellow writer! I would LOVE it if you reached out to me! This wasn’t all for nothing, right!
But don’t leave yet! I do have a passcode. I know this was a jumble of words and rambling but I still have to put one in. I heard that there’s a lot of people on here that don’t read things fully and miss out on rules or information! But.. Just because you read through this all, I’ll gladly give you options on the passcode! Also please put in an introduction of yourself! Don’t think “Oh maybe I shouldn’t bother this person with too much to read”! I like seeing big blocks.
PASSCODE:
What’s your dream country to travel to and why?
OR
Who’s your favorite TV show / Cartoon / Game / Anime character?
Feel free to pick both! Now, that’s all from me. Please don’t put your request as just “Wanna rp”!

2024.05.24 00:23 He4rtfillia Internalised homophobia // denial

Ever since I was in third grade I’ve been crushing on girls, never really any boys, always told my friends some random boy name if they asked who I‘m crushing on knowing damn well I wanted a girl instead of a guy I was always the „popular“ kid but still got bullied , a lot on social media n stuff so I was scared to admit that I like girls and not boys I always told myself liking girls is embarrassing and wrong, still do Years later this hasn’t changed at all, for the last two years I’ve been trying to sexualise myself a little more and try dating guys instead since I also struggle really bad with issues related to my father and not growing up having any male attention, when it comes to men I can’t say no and think they wouldn’t want me if I said no but recently I have started setting more boundaries for myself and even started labeling myself as a bisexual with female preference I honestly thought about it a lot and it’s just that I don’t see myself with a man ever, never have been attracted to one and probably won’t be, and I always feel like I am missing out on women when trying anything with a man The only big problem that I really am having rn is just missing out on female attention, I only get weird and creepy guys in my dm‘s and barely ever any compliments from a female and I have honestly thought about just going for it with a man since there’s a really low chance I’d actually end up with a girl someday, on the other side I crave a female in my life so badly

2024.05.24 00:15 lookitsathrowaway_11 People don’t respect the fact that I want to keep my sexuality private.

I’m so sick of this and I’m starting to get angry.
I’m currently figuring out myself and what I like and don’t like. Currently, I believe that I’m a Bisexual man. However, I don’t make that information about myself public. Frankly because I don’t think it’s anyone’s business. That’s between me and future partners.
I’m recently on a work trip abroad and I was out with a female colleague of mine. I was telling her about my new car that I had just gotten and had been working on. I had showed her a picture and told her I was thinking of naming the car Poison Ivy (due to the same colors on the car).
She immediately gave me a look and said, “wait are you gay?”
A little bit taken a back I just said no and asked why she wanted to know. She went on to say that that’s something a gay guy would call his car. This was still confusing to me as I named the car after the character from Batman and Robin (not even a fan of the show or comics, I just realized that it had similar color compositions and thought it would be funny. In fact multiple other owners of my model of car have named it the same so it’s not even original).
I kinda laughed it off and just left it at that. But the problem is she wouldn’t stop asking me. The constant “are you sure you’re not?” And “I guess my gaydar has been off lately” felt like jabs at me to “confess” to her that I truly was gay (even though I’m not).
This isn’t meant to be a jab at anyone who is very open about their sexuality. For some, it’s a big part of their life and they want it to be known and I think that’s great.
From everything I’m learning about myself I’ve just come to realize that I’m not one of those people. I’m very private when it comes to my love life and I don’t feel comfortable with people making assumptions about me when they know what my orientation is.
I dont know if I’m being irrational with all of this or not, but I just need to rant about it a bit and I wouldn’t mind hearing some perspectives on things.

Abstract
This study analyses consumer concerns about privacy in social media engagement, the factors influencing these concerns, and provides strategies for handling them. To achieve this objective, this paper provides feedback on two vital questions (What are the primary concerns of social media users regarding privacy? And What factors contribute to these concerns?) that guide this research. The paper uses qualitative analysis to obtain analyze data. Lastly, the paper provides suggestions for future research and solution
I. INTRODUCTION
In the current digitized world, many people are increasingly sharing their information with the public through social media. However, this act of sharing their details through electronic gadgets such as smartphones has and still increases the risk of privacy violations as people engage through social media. One of the events that significantly deepened consumer privacy concerns in the United States was the Cambridge Analytica data breach on Facebook half a decade ago, which affected many user accounts in the land. This data breach initiated the #deletefacebook movement across social networking sites culminating in many users reconsidering their connections with social media platforms about their trustworthiness, and potential for confidential issues. For one section of users, this meant signing out of these sites while the other section considered it as a chance to reset their confidential settings. According to Bright et al, user privacy concerns differ across sites in the user journey, and only a few sites are developed equally when it comes to user concerns as well as disclosures specifically in connection to social networking sites (1). Throughout this duration of redefining their connections with social networking sites, users find themselves coping with the "privacy paradox" and despite having privacy concerns, online users persist in disclosing their private details for distinct reasons, rather than safeguarding their details online. Therefore, this paper investigates [consumer concerns about privacy in social media engagement, and factors influencing these concerns, and provides strategies for handling them]().
A. Research problem
Social media plays a significant role in promoting interaction and sharing of information among users from all over the world. However, sharing of information over social media sites has and still increases the risk of privacy violations as people engage through social media. It's from this, that this paper settled on evaluating the consumer concerns about privacy in social media engagement, factors influencing these concerns, and providing strategies for tackling them.
B. Aim and Objectives
This study is determined to analyze the user concerns about privacy in social media engagement, highlight the primary factors influencing these concerns, and provide recommendations on desired approaches for handling them.
C. Research question
[1. What are the primary concerns of social media users regarding privacy?]()
2. What factors contribute to these concerns?
II. EXTENDED BACKGROUND
Social media has grown to become the modern-day routine. Currently, many social networking sites are continuing to integrate to offer distinct digital affordances as well as chances to enlarge individual networks, interactions, and information sharing. The availability of these sites has significantly culminated in to rise in user engagement. For instance, TikTok is among the most used sites with a massive following of more than 750 million accounts. Currently, people are becoming more open to sharing individual data and with the aid of the modern digital culture, this has been made possible by utilizing the availability of internet service. Although social media is considered to be of great significance in facilitating communication and entertainment among users, it also stores noticeable repositories of individual details that culminate to privacy concerns. This threat of privacy breaches has continuously increased as social media are frequently accessed through applications on cell phones, where a substantial number of identifiable data is stored, aggregated, and linked across various social networking sites.
Even as the issue of privacy threat has attained massive attention and recognition, especially among people who use these platforms, many studies have reported the concept of privacy paradox, which implies discrepancies involving persons' habits of disclosing individual details and their concern concerning privacy threat. Even though social media users have an increasing concern concerning privacy on media platforms, they are willing to proceed to disclose their data for various gratifications. According to Chen et al, some social media users always show or rather demonstrate reduced effort to offer safety on their confidentiality despite showing significant concern associated with social media (2). On the contrary, there is also a section of social media consumers who are not naive in their revel actions (2). This brings us to an analysis of the historical evolution of social media platforms, the emergence of privacy concerns, and important theoretical frameworks particularly privacy calculus.
Typically, the rise of privacy is significantly connected to the fast growth of technologies and the growing nature of the modern digital space. History shows that privacy was mainly linked with physical and individual interactions. During this time, people were interacting at their homes and with immediate families. However, this was significantly changed by the massive evolution in the digital world. The development of social media sites, and the level of connectivity they provide initiated a new era of unprecedented access to individual information. The new developments have made it simple for people to share their stories and even sensitive information with just one click significantly subjecting one to underlying privacy perils. The world is experiencing significant growth or cases in several data breaches leading to massive breaches of private data to the public. Hackers always target unsuspecting firms or companies to access important details such as the profile of clients or company records which could result in various forms of exploitations. When such a breach happens, it severely affects both the company and the individuals because while the person's data is compromised so is the deterioration of trust in the organization by the public.
Privacy calculus (shown in Figure 1 in the appendix section) refers to the comprehension of privacy as well as safety trade-offs of a certain innovation or firm. It assumes that individuals will divulge individual details whenever the perceived rewards or advantages outweigh the potential cost. Kehr et al. ascertain that the choice of sharing information is associated with privacy calculus as the equilibrium between the rewards and the hazards of revealing individual details or data. A person's privacy calculus can be impacted by several factors including but not limited to the perceived value of the details being revealed and the repercussions of the disclosure. Additionally, the cultures and factors within the society might considerably influence privacy caliculus These factors include but are not limited to societal norms associated with privacy in specific locations. Research has indicated that the threshold of diversity which is always accompanied by the growing society has some considerable effect on the withdrawal from the globe making people even more sensitive to what they share with the public.
III. RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
This study used a qualitative approach in analyzing the user concerns on social networking site engagement. Primarily, this method was applied in this study because it offers a significant opportunity for the researcher to devolve deeply into but not limited to nuances of consumer experiences, viewpoints as well as emotions. Compared to a quantitative approach which only focuses on numerical as well as statistical evaluations, the selected approach here delves deeply into the underlying inspirations, feelings, and means that drive consumer connections online. Approaches such as but not limited to interviews and focus groups provided a substantial opportunity for the researcher to unveil the intricate web of norms and values that significantly impact how consumers interact and their perception of social media sites.
Additionally, the qualitative approach substantially enabled the researcher to attain different consumer concerns. According to Van der Vlist, and Helmond, social networking sites are characterized by a sophisticated structure that comprises different cultures and subcultures with distinct practices as well as concerns (3). By applying a qualitative approach, an investigator can therefore attain immediate information precisely on the experiences of consumers over different populations, and locations. This great understating is significant because it helps to design comprehensive as well as consumer-centric sites that cater to the different requirements as well as tests of the audiences across the world.
Moreover, the qualitative approach offered the researcher a flexible and adaptable experience especially when analyzing emerging issues within social media and user engagement. As indicated by, Reynolds, and Bennett, the qualitative approach allows the use of their analytical paradigms to suit the certain features of emerging issues encompassed in social media as well as consumer involvement (4).
When collecting data, the research applied the following types of qualitative methods:
A. Interviews
Interviews offered a significant platform for participants to articulate their concerns using their own words thus providing the researcher with the desired information on the experiences and viewpoints of people using the complex domain of social media. By applying the open-ended questions, the researcher was able to analyze the profound inspirations that significantly provided limelight to the intricacies of social media. Besides, interviews helped in contextualizing the user concerns in the wider brackets of social and cultural settings in which they take place. By involving the respondents in the study through discussion, the researcher was able to identify factors that significantly influence consumers'' viewpoints and habits including but not limited to peer pressure and cultural ideals. The contextual comprehension offered great support especially in deciphering the motive behind consumer concerns and coming up with solutions or rather strategies that perfectly resonate with the distinct array of consumers globally. Lastly, the interview helped to foster significant discourse that involved the researcher and respondents. This helped in cementing trust and the needed help that improved the credibility of the research.
B. Questionnaires
This study also used questionnaires to obtain relevant data that assisted in the completion of this research. Typically, questionnaires are valuable equipment issued when collecting data because they can gather a significant number of standardized information effectively. This study started by clarifying the objective of the questionnaires to participants. The researcher applied an open-ended type of questionnaire and crafted questions that aided in the collection of data from the respondents. The questionnaires were delivered to participants through email surveys that significantly aligned with the features of the sample group as well as the study aims. The clarity of the communication in the email and privacy substantially fostered participant involvement in the study. Besides, the researcher ensured that the information provided through this tool was secured and systematically organized to foster the analysis of information. In a nutshell, the study implemented effective usage of questionnaires in collecting vital data in the study. The researcher adhered to the best practices and embraced the spirit of iterative refinement thus harnessing the complete ability of the questionnaires and advanced knowledge concerning user concerns on social media engagement.
The sampling technique applied in this study was purposeful approach. This approach is broadly applied in qualitative studies to identify data-rich scenarios for the most efficient usage of scarce resources (5). The sampling techniques comprise of coming up and choosing people or groups that possess knowledge concerning or have experience with the topic under study (5). Through the use of emails, the researcher chose respondents who met certain qualifications and offered valuable information concerning consumer concerns on social media. Based on the participants’ selection criteria, a purposeful sample of (n=60) was selected to participate in the survey.
The research used thematic analysis (TA) in analyzing data. TA has enabled the research to unveil the profound concerns that prevail more across social media consumers. Through a systematic analysis specifically of the content that is common among consumers, the research was able to pinpoint reappearing subjects that show shared concerns, and frustrations. For example, factors including but not limited to privacy issues, and cyberbullying frequently arise in literature addressing the concept of consumer concerns within the context of social media. Nevertheless, TA offered a structured framework that greatly helped in organizing as well as interpreting qualitative information. Through conducting a thorough grouping of information or rather data into topics and sub-topics, the research was able to attain a fundamental insight into the diverse range of issues from the consumers. As argued by Thompson, TA promotes the rigor as well as reliability of the study outcomes, making sure that conclusions are based on empirical proof (6).
Additionally, TA offered significant support in facilitating comparisons as well as synthesis over distinct studies. Considering the idea that the use of social media keeps on growing, investigators always face various pieces of publications addressing the same subjects. TA gives these investigators to highlight the similarities and differences across datasets thus facilitating the enrichment of their comprehension concerning consumer concerns. Despite the above merits of TA in this study, this approach also significantly fails in various areas especially when applied to data analysis (7). For instance, the TA does not have strict directives for completing an analysis. This might easily culminate in variability, particularly in the manner in which this approach is used in different studies, thus rendering it difficult to draw a comparison in findings or replicate studies.
IV. ETHICAL CONSIDERATIONS
The consideration of ethics within studies is paramount since it ensures that the studies are completed by observing integrity, respect as well as fairness specifically on respondents involved. It's vital to uphold ethical consideration because morally right and also helps to maintain the credibility of the research. This research upheld the ethical standards before, during, and after the study in various ways. Firstly, the researcher ensured that the idea of informed consent was considered by significantly providing vivid information to respondents so that they could come up with independent choices about their involvement in the study. The researcher also ensured that there was room for withdrawal from the research by any respondent if they felt to do so. The research also ensured the concepts of confidentiality and privacy were considered during the interview process. Research has shown that it is vital to offer respect to the privacy of respondents to enhance or build confidence and trust (8). Enria et al. Emphasizes the need to maintain privacy during the study process from information gathering up to publication to lock out unauthorized personnel or disclosure of personal details (8). In this study, the researcher adopted the necessary measures to offer the needed protection or security for sensitive data or details gathered during the interview and the study at large.
Furthermore, the researcher also took the responsibility of reducing harm and at the same time raising the benefits for respondents. The researcher achieved this carefully by offering potential safety and eliminating threats associated with the research such as but not limited to physical harm. The researcher ensured that the relevant measures were executed to provide safety to vulnerable groups. In addition, the researcher ensured that there was respect for the respondent's independence as well as dignity. This was achieved by significantly treating respondents with respect and dignity. This entirely involved, honoring their choices concerning but not limited to their inclusion in the research.
Nonetheless, the researcher also ensured that fairness and equity were upheld during the study. The researcher observed the concept of diversity in recruiting participants and at the same time eliminating the prejudices grounded on aspects including but not limited to race or religion. Besides, the researcher took the necessary steps by considering the potential outcomes of the study for the most vulnerable respondents specifically people living with a disability. Lastly, the researcher guaranteed that ethical oversight, as well as responsibility, is observed throughout the research procedure. The researcher took the primary function of ensuring that the study adheres to the ethical standards designed by Institutional review boards.
V. RESULTS
The analysis focused on demographic examination by exploring aspects such as age, gender, education, job status, and social media platforms used. Based on gender, there 27 were female while 33 participants were men. The youngest participant was aged 21 years while the oldest was 57 years. The average age of the participants was 35.4 years, indicating that most were men. The minimum education level of the participant is a high school graduate and all participants were actively in employment or self-employed.
All the participants had registered an account with at least two social media platforms, although a majority (48), had multiple accounts. Facebook, X, Instagram, and TikTok were the most common social media platforms. However, most of the participants had registered an account with professional platforms like Linkedin, although most were not active participants on these platforms. Facebook emerged as the most popular for general networking while X was preferred for emerging news and trending online topics.
TA was adopted to explore the concerns of the users regarding privacy. Following the analytical approach proposed, there were five emerging themes on the most pressing privacy issues by users of social media networks; namely the scale and scope of data collection, potential misuse of user data, third-party app portability, behavioral tracking, and potential data breaches.
VI. ANALYSIS DISCUSSION
A. Discussion
To achieve the objective of the study, it was vital to provide substantial feedback on the two research questions that guided this study. The first question focused on understanding the primary concerns of social media about privacy. Social media networks have revolutionized and transformed communication, social networking, and bridging people's relationships. These mediums offer crucial benefits but also introduce noteworthy privacy concerns. The interviews revealed that the concerns delve around the process of data collection, use of information collected, security, control over private data, tracking behavioral patterns, and the association of third-party stakeholders. The interviews provided a comprehensive understanding by highlighting relevant concerns in detail, which will be explored further by applying the TA framework to ensure that each factor is understood well.
Scope and scale of Data Collection
The interviewees showed concerns about the scale and scope of data collection by social media networks. It emerged as one of the most pressing issues among social media users because of the intricacy of remaining private. Social media platforms obtain an enormous volume of information, including aspects like name, age, and residence and intimate details such as internet activities, hobbies, and text messages. The respondents indicated that the platforms can collect Personal Identifiable Information (PII) because account holders it is one of the requirements at the point of registration [10]. Crucial information like personal email addresses, contact numbers, and date of birth. The participants showed concerns because they suspected fraudulent actors could access the data and use it for malicious purposes.
The participants also showed concern for the ability of social media platforms to study behavioral patterns using the data collected. Participants argued that privacy is a crucial aspect of human dignity and should be guaranteed by social media platforms [11]. One participant noted that Facebook can track their interment activities, sites visited visit, content, preferences, and communication patterns. Therefore, it demonstrates that the use of collected data by social media is an issue that could pose privacy risks.
Misuse of Personal Data
The participants showed concerns about the use of information collected and stored in social media databases. Social media platforms can leverage the data collected to understand how to improve the experiences of users and other aspects that improve the quality. Based on the participants' responses, targeted advertising can be a vulnerability to users. Social media platforms can use the data to facilitate Ad Personalization [11]. The algorithms can be trained to analyze user data to enable personalized advertisements, which is an invasive antic. The platforms can be involved in the monetization of user data by selling the analyzed ta to third-party organizations.
The participants of the survey observed that social media platforms used the data beyond advertising purposes. The algorithms can be refined to understand social media consumption patterns to influence their purchase decisions. This is a form of manipulation by feeding users targeted information to influence their attitudes, behaviors, and choices [12]. Third-party organizations can leverage modern advances in AI and analytics to study the behavior of social media users and enable the system to make product recommendations and even product development.
Data Breaches
Data security emerged as a leading theme in during the interviews as recent news of frequent cyberattacks and monumental data breaches led to the exposure of personal information. Most participants noted that the high-profile incidents of data breaches by social media platforms like the Facebook-Cambridge Analytica scandal led to the manipulation of voters' decisions in the US election and the Brexit vote. Millions of personal information data were mined without the users' consent. The exposure of the data led to adverse consequences including identity theft, financial fraud, and online vulnerabilities.
Similarly, users noted that user accounts frequently face security vulnerabilities. The accounts have weak password protocols. Some participants indicated that they have been victims of social media account hacks due to the weak security protocols. However, the participants were encouraged to indicate the password, implying that they used a common password including date of birth, name, and city [10]. Some users understood the two-factor authentication, which is crucial in minimizing hacking. The two-factor authentication protocols lead to problems by adding layers. Making it unpopular among most social media users.
Poor account security reduces the ability of users to control their personal information. However, most social media platforms recognize that there is a need to enhance the security of users' accounts. The security setting is complex and confusing to many ordinary social media users. A significant proportion of participants did not understand the process of setting the advanced security protocols [13]. Most users rely on the default security setting, which encourages sharing of personal information and social media activities. The users are expected to maneuver the complex process to ensure the security of their data. Shifting such an obligation to users with limited knowledge about the technicality of social media account security raises ethical and moral concerns.
Behavioral Tracking
Most users noted that social media platforms can perform behavioral tracking by analyzing social media activities, patterns, and content. Cookies Technologies provide the platforms with a tool to perform continuous tracking across different websites, retaining in-depth profiles of user's behavior [13]. The platforms can conduct behavioral tracking with informed consent: The Cambridge-Analytica incident reveals the vulnerability of social media platforms on individuals and society. The profiles created were used not only for marketing and advertising purposes but also to influence political campaigns.
Participants of the study indicated that the ability of social media platforms to collect data limitlessly can expose users to surveillance vulnerabilities. Collecting private and intimate data, such as personal health information and PII can enable third-party actors to perform surveillance since each aspect of social media interaction is documented. The Power held by social media companies leads to the loss of anonymity over personal information to some extent. The structure of social media communication makes it impossible to maintain anonymity because the data is augmented into a singular platform.
Third-Party Apps Data Portability
Portability and the right to delete information is also a concern among users. This stems from the concept of the "right to be forgotten." Users may opt for some content from their social media platforms. Users have limited control over the spread and distribution of the content they post. Deleting the content does not limit other account owners to post similar information [14]. This is a significant concern highlighted by the participants of the survey. deleting their data or controlling its spread once shared.
The growth of social media has coincided with an era of integration of online systems and solutions. Most social media platforms allow third-party apps and integrations. Third-party applications operate based on their practices, policies, and unique terms and conditions for service. There are more privacy issues when social media networks integrate third-party apps and services. Integration of third-party Apps into the social media application can facilitate the collection of data and potential for misuse [12]. There is a lack of clarity over the party responsible for the security of data. Besides, the more the data is available to employees of both organizations, it can be at risk of breaches.
The second question focused on examining the mediating factors contributing to the social media user’s privacy concerns. Based on the TA, the merging factors included inadequate regulatory protection, ineffective social media platform privacy policies, and ignorance of users on appropriate security settings.
Accessibility and Permission
Accessing the data held may require permission from the user or the social media platform. Some apps may be granted broad permissions that allow them unlimited access to the information. Third-party apps often request access to a wide range of user data, which may not be necessary for their functionality. There is a lack of appropriate oversight over data and usage by third-party organizations and apps. The platforms do not provide sufficient oversight and guidelines on how the third parties use and protect the data they access.
Therefore, there is potential for misuse and manipulation of user data by social media platforms and third parties who access the data. Social media platforms may have strict privacy but third-party organizations may have inconsistent privacy concerns. The Cambridge Analytica scandal is an illustration of such an incident, where Facebook data was accessed with crucial privacy breaches. Social media platforms pose a significant threat because they can lead to trust issues among users. Some of the participants noted that they had deleted their accounts because of fear of privacy breaches [14]. The constant privacy issues influence the attitudes and behaviors on social media and their level of trust in these platforms. Hence, the participants have adopted self-censorship due to the awareness of potential online tracking and data collection. This involves avoiding sharing some details or expressing views freely.
The risk of privacy breaches can minimize the levels of social engagement to conceal one's true personality and character. Privacy concerns can lead to reduced engagement, with users less likely to participate in activities that require personal information sharing. Users have also shown concerns for better data and information security practices by social media platforms. The participants of the survey indicated that transparency over the use of the data collected is necessary to protect their confidentiality [12][13]. The growth in awareness and understanding of the right to privacy has been a significant factor that has influenced the demand for better information security protocols.
Inadequate Regulatory and Policy Concerns
Privacy is a right recognized by the laws of different countries including the United States. There are specific legislations such as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in the EU block or the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), enacted to protect the privacy and confidentiality of users' data. However, it does not provide sufficient protection to users since there are several hurdles in its implementation. The lack of effectiveness and compliance with the law has contributed to the loopholes that are constantly utilized by the platforms to collect personal data [12]. The legislations impose legal and criminal liabilities on social media platforms, which can be a crucial method of deterring platforms from engaging in unauthorized sharing of users' data.
Ineffective Social Media Site Policies
Social media platforms have policies that guide the usage of data collected from account holders. Most of these terms are often complex and it is difficult for the users to comprehend. Users sometimes agree to conditions without fully understanding service and privacy rules since they are lengthy and complex [11]. The participants contented that they had never read through all the policies, terms, and conditions of using the site. These challenges lead to the acceptance of policies that allow the collection and usage of data.
Besides, social media platforms are constantly enhancing policy changes that could affect the security of users' data. Platforms regularly change their terms of service, sometimes making major adjustments to privacy provisions that users might not always see or comprehend [13]. The ignorance of users creates vulnerabilities in users and places social media platforms in a superior position. This enables the platforms to include policies that are pro-data collection.
B. Conclusion
Social media companies need to improve privacy controls, strengthen security, simplify privacy settings, and follow strict regulations to strike a balance between user interaction and privacy. Platforms can provide a safer and more reliable environment and encourage users to interact without jeopardizing their personal information by fully addressing these main concerns. This fine balance, where the advantages of connection and sharing are evaluated against the fundamental right to privacy, will determine the future of social media.
Dealing with a wide range of intricate issues is necessary when navigating the social media privacy tightrope. It makes sense that users are concerned about the scope of data gathering, the uses to which it is put, the security of their data, and their control over it. These issues become even more complicated when third-party apps are involved and behavioral tracking is used. These privacy concerns provide serious legal and policy hurdles in addition to affecting user behavior and confidence.
C. Future Research
Social media platforms need to reconsider the concept of user privacy to protect the confidentiality of user data. It is necessary to communicate clearly about the purpose for which the data collected is to be used. The current system is opaque and the users have limited knowledge about the terms and conditions of service. Organizations must protect the integrity of user data. Failure to comply with the regulatory requirement can lead to substantial financial and reputational damage to a social media platform. Facebook has been heavily fined for data breaches and scandals.
Policymakers and legislator should also understand the risk that social media platforms expose to their users and introduce stricter regulations and guidelines on how these platforms can use data collected. Currently, social media platforms are powerful and can influence users to accept terms that would allow the collection of personal information. The legislation should focus on introducing guidelines that compel the platforms to be transparent and use terms that are easily understandable to all users. The study focused on users that are educated but they were also not familiar with the terms on the use of personal data by the platforms. The government can provide better protection by introducing liabilities on platforms that mislead users to accept opaque terms and conditions with a loophole that will allow the collection of PII. Government involvement will be necessary as information and communication technologies continue to transform how organizations collect, analyze, and utilize online users and activities.

2024.05.24 00:07 mariposa933 follow up after argument with teacher

first conversation i had with teacher :
So my(20s) biblical teacher(30s) had been avoiding me for a few classes probably out of guilt, but this week he started acting normal again. Last class we had, the students were waiting in the hallway before entering the classroom, and the teacher was preparing before giving the lesson. He said hello to people before entering the room, and then said hello to me specifically and asked how i was, probably to diffuse the awkwardness after last time he didn't want to let me enter the class bc i didn't greet him and was acting aloof; to say there was no bad blood. When the lesson ended, i had a convo with another student, and i learned from her that the evangelist had once warned a female student regarding her outfit bc another male student was staring at her. I also had this happen to me, except this time it was the teacher i mentionned earlier. I never had the evangelist tell me there was a problem with my outfit since I wasn't even wearing anything revealing, just a regular top and pants. Like, the teacher spaced out for a few secs as he entered the room, and then came back to his senses. I think it's especially inappropriate for someone who's in a position of authority and who claims to be our "spiritual father". i felt gross after this, and started wearing ugly sweatpants and sweatshirts on the regular. I'm one of the best students, and he always pays attention to me, bc if i look upset, he'll make comments about how "some of us" look upset, if i smile, he would say "what do you think xxx, i see you're smiling.", if he needed to ask something he would always interrogate me, as if he didn't know other people's names. It stopped ever since i started ignoring/avoiding him, and he has new favourites since a few students are always coming up to him and always asking questions.

2024.05.24 00:05 methecranberry289 Being sceptic about things isn't the solution but...

So, I'm a 21 years old female and in a same age relationship. Things are going pretty good between us. I'm currently in cloud 9. Though it's only been a month and we haven't met yet. Our morning starts with ending a 7 hours long Wp call as we sleep on call and goes along with sharing every little detail of the day. But there are some things that are bothering me. Just an hour ago we were on our regular goodnight call and he sounded a bit messed up. He told me about his past relationship with a girl named Polly, lives somewhere on Earth. He was in love with him 2-3 months ago. As per his description, she cheated on him with her ex. He also called her "bi*ch", which is kinda a red flag for me because I strictly follow "the girl code". He added how I lit up his life after her and blah blah but I am kinda loving him less after hearing that. It seems to me that he easily falls in love. I want someone who is hard to melt. I asked him that if he loves her or not he obviously said no but kinda pretended my "I love you"s after hearing that. Suggest me what should I do? (He's still on call when I'm posting it)
Tl;dr: I really avoid dating people who aren't healed yet it just costs my energy and I also don't drama in my life.

2024.05.24 00:02 Particular-Gas1250 My 14 (almost 15) years old sister is living with a split custody thing. Her dad is the main custody holder and both parents are abusive, he told my sister that if she wants to live with me so bad then I can just pick her up at the end of this school year on recording. Can I do that?

So I'm a 21 (almost 22) year old female. My sister (14) who we will call sky, is currently living with our mom and her dad via a custody split. There is a very long history of abuse in both households with therapy and divorce receipts to back that up. For over two years Sky has wanted to come live with me and has stated this to both of her parents, her therapist, anyone who will listen. At her dad's house her room is full of slugs, mold, mushrooms, bugs and continuous water damage (her therapist has been made aware as well as people at her school, etc.). At our mothers house she has a clear door that anyone can see into so she has no privacy to change or do anything in her bedroom, when she asked our mom if she could buy a curtain so sky could have privacy our mom told her to sleep on the couch if she didn't like it. Sky is neglected via clothing being bought for her that is too small, her shoes get worn out u til they are more than falling apart and Sky has to purchase their own shoes because her parents won't, my sister has medical issues that prohibit her from walking too much, playing sports, and eating certain foods. Both parents force my sister to walk everyday from school to catch a bus (causing them to leave her last class early everyday to catch it so she's nearly failing that class) because neither of them will pick up my sister even though the doctor says she needs to be picked up because the walking puts too much strain on her heart. My sister is a vegetarian by partial choice, mostly by the doctor recommending this diet based on the foods she cannot eat and both parents force Sky to eat meat when they both know it makes her physically ill and her dad has thrown away salads that Sky has prepared for herself so he can try and force Sky to eat what he has made. Our brother who we will call Mason (16) gets everything he asks for by both parents, as a bedroom to himself at each home with a lock on each door and privacy. Mason get new clothes on a daily, gets to go out qith friends, got to go to the high school of his choosing, a.d is generally spoiled by both parents. He bullies Sky alongside both parents and the constant abuse and neglect has caused Sky to become depressed and suicidal, Sky gets screamed at and called names constantly, told they are a burden, annoying, disrespectful, that neither parent wants them around, and so many other things. Sky has been body shamed countless time by both parents as well. I can go on and on about the physical abuse I have even faced at the hands of both Dalton (Sky amd Masons father) and Vanessa (all of our mother).
Today Sky had to go to Seattle Childrens and I went and visited them to be there for her. On the way home sky got on recording Dalton saying that if she wants to live with me so bad then I can pick them up and take them when their last day of school comes this year. I want to know what my abilities are and if I can actually do this. If I get this statement in writing from him will this stand legally? What can I do to get my sister away from there and in my custody?

2024.05.24 00:01 riddleresque New job using the right Name and Pronouns!!

Okay so first off, I know that this sounds like something that should technically be a basic expectation for a lot of people, but I'm not used to it and the situation itself made it kind of surprising so I'm very happy about it!!!
Like I said in the title, I started a new job. When I set up an account before hand it had an option for a preferred name, so I put mine in, and it automatically used my preferred name as the default in the apps, which was nice. But I wasn't really sure if my bosses or coworkers would use that name as well, since I had applied and introduced myself in the interview under my legal name, and was kind of too nervous to mention the name I wanted to go by. Especially since at my old job I went by my legal name, and I am still pre-everything so I pretty much always just pass as female. I have a short haircut, but my voice is really high pitched and my shifts are too long for a binder. But when I came in they all said Eddie (my preferred name) without me even mentioning anything!!
Even more so, when I came back from my break more than one person asked me individually, "hey, you go by 'he,' right? Just wanting to make sure :)" and I told them yeah!! I just. I'm still so fucking ecstatic about it all, I didn't even have to say anything!! I didn't have to worry about taking the chance that I would judged for it or anything, it was just an automatic thing. I'm so so grateful for this new place, these people are amazing

2024.05.23 23:51 Flapjack_K Is this workplace bullying or just a difficult person?

I hope this post is allowed. I have a two year old and I work four days a week in a busy, intense media company. I drop off my toddler ad commute into the city arriving around 9:10 - 9:30. Anyway, I’m having particular trouble with the business lead on my project. We are the same level of seniority and he’s not my boss. He scrutinises every single piece of work I do, every comment I make to our clients and staff, and is constantly questioning why I’m not working as hard as the others on my team (male, 20s, single, who often get in needlessly at 7am).
He watches me across the office to see what tasks I’m actually working on. On the one day that we work from home, he texts me in the morning, he calls me, and he leaves me persistent Slack messages with instructions, ideas and ask me if I’ve done a number of tasks which are not relevant to the scope of work that we’re on.
Behind my back he has bitched to my boss that I don’t do enough proactive work for clients and I don’t go out of my way like the juniors do. He has falsely accused me of not attending meetings to my boss.
This morning I came in 10 minutes later than normal because my kid was sick and he asked me where I was. Every week he does a corny end of week email to the team and all his juniors (who are female) send back obsequious slack messages about how funny he is. He tends to call out everyone in the team with high praise except me. Every single time I am the only name omitted. Today there was a conference and he wasn’t attending. On the way to the conference he kept texting me with what to say to people, what to do and demanding to know how it was going all the way throughout the day. It’s my job. Of course I know all of these things! It would be like saying to a senior nurse “don’t forget to wash your hands today and care for the patients.” There are other things too, like asking me a political question to which he knows I have to say no to in front of the rest of the team in order to look like I’m being difficult. On the days that I have to do daycare pick up and leave 10 minutes before 5pm, he will make a big comment in front of the open plan office about me leaving for my kid.
He has never worked with another female of the same level as him. But he’s very well liked in the company (although quite a lot of people think he’s a high maintenance hyperactive jackass.) The thing is ladies - if you’re still reading this far - I am dreading coming into work every day. I’m a hyper performer in my department and I’m one of my boss’ favorites. So I’m protected. But I’m absolutely miserable and I don’t know how to take this further.
Tl;Dr I’m totally suffocated by a man on my project who is the same seniority as me yet is scrutinising me, contacting me outside of work hours, accusing me of not working hard

2024.05.23 23:51 Wide-Ad-3840 aitah for never forgiving my sister?

When i was around 13, female, my sister, 14, ill call M for the story, had already been diagnosed with many disorders; bipolar personality, depression, anxiety, anger management disorder, adhd, odd, and more. My parents had left me, my oldest sister, 19, S, and M alone in our apartment. i have no clue what started the argument but only a few minutes in were things starting to get bad. S and M had been yelling at each other, both using the past to defend themselves, but M wasnt having it. She had tried to walk out of the apartment door and S blocked her, S is the smallest out of all of us she always has been, M is the bulkiest… or fattest, im the skinny tall one. S has this idea in her mind that she can beat M in a fight and if they were to fight she could easily to M to the hospital, but M is way too much, too much anger and strength to not be able to win so we were lucky they hadnt fought at the door. After M threw a fit and walked away for a minute, me and S were standing in the kitchen, not even speaking when she comes out once again and heads straight to the door, S blocks her again and M starts to say a lot of shit. I was usually the one to stay quiet while M argued with anyone, she would always go too far, calling our mother selfish names and hitting her a few times, M has also had the cops called on her for becoming too aggressive, and was even put in a program. at this point in the argument i had started to speak up, calling M out for shit she has done when she says “yall are the reasons i cut myself.” as soon as she said that i cried, to be told that by youre own sister is a crazy thing to experience. S got more pissed and eventually broke her pinkie while punching a wall. M had went for a walk, though we werent supposed to let her leave.
a few months later we moved to a house, M was still an angry person and had already argued with my mom about 2 times. The third argument happened in the morning, me and M had to go to school, we went to different schools since she was in alternative schools, but she didnt want to go and started up with my mom again. it escalated to the point where the cops were called, this is the second time theyve come to the house, and i watched as she threatened the p.o, fought against them, and eventually on the ground with handcuffs on. they walked her out and S drove me to school. the p.o she assaulted didnt do anything against her and she was simply put in a mental institution for 2 days, keep in mind shes been in the institution multiple times already. Just a few weeks after that, another argument with my stepfather, L, mother and M had broken out, M hit L and thats when they called the cops, when i thought that they had calmed down i went to my moms room, she was crying and still on call with 911, as M walks into the room she sees this too and starts to cry, begging my mom to hang up. me and my mom were standing by the bathroom so we walked in there and locked ourselves in while L was hiding her electronics. M was pounding on the locked door and there was a few times i thought it would break. when the cops showed up she fought against them again and this time she had to go to court, she was put in an anger management institute for 2 weeks i think.
even after all this happened my sister still never really stopped fighting and eventually i got to the point i was tired of it, i started to ignore her and keep my distance, when she started an argument with me she got mad and asked how she hurt me, i told her the truth(a sum up of whats above) and she got upset.
so am i the asshole?

2024.05.23 23:51 Adventurous_Try914 Im tired of this fake “digital revolution"

Let me explain first before someone gets mad abt the title also disclaimer English isn’t my first language (nor my second and i dont use any translators so sorry in advance)
I don’t k if i have the right to talk about politics or else here but i think a lot of people know what happens in the world rn (🍉) it is important to talk about it! But these days i noticed mostly in tiktok that a lot of people pointing out a lot of FEMALES influencers (like Hailey Beily idk her name sorry) for not speaking about it, ok i get it but why i don’t see the same energy for these males celebrities? Those millionaires footballers ? Those actors? Males singers ? No, its a double standard. Misogyny at its finest.

2024.05.23 23:34 owlbearound The process of learning

Hello. I've been researching my past lives for a long time now. I've been using different methods including regression, meditation, automatic writing, etc... yet only one method seems to work- my spirit guide.
Whenever I needed help they would pop up in my dreams. I would also be guided to past lives around a full moon. Which is strange because I was also born under a full moon. (How about you?)
Now that I'm in my 40s (turning 41 on Monday) I've received yet another glimpse into my akashic records. The process of learning up until this point wasn't easy, but I wouldn't change the journey for anything...
In this life I was a young female samurai living in Japan during the 1800s. (They were a real thing.)
Note: I've always loved oriental history and culture, even though I was born in america. I'm also captivated by badass women throughout history.
Anyway...
In this dream I was standing in a tent with a few other soldiers. One of the them handed me a book, or a catalog of names. The book in my hands felt old and thick. I opened the cover, and flipped through the pages until I found a name. It was my own.
As soon as I tried to read it, the dream had ended.
When I woke up, I was still able to remember what letters I saw, and what it sounded like. I was compelled to look up female warriors with a similar sounding name. What's weird is that even though the book wasn't written in Japanese, I was still able to find the woman's name in my dream.
They were indeed recorded.
This never really happened before. I would get glimpses of past lives, but can only assume what I was called. Now that I see my name it makes this experience feel legit. Not only did I find a name, but a photograph as well.
And yes, we do look similar despite our heritage. I even placed a photo of myself next to hers, around the same age...
There is something there.
A cosmic alignment in our eyes.

2024.05.23 23:29 ForceForHistory Internalized transphobia?

So yeah this is a little vent. I noticed kinda a repetition in the way I see myself. Like I knew that I was trans pretty much right after my 18th birthday. I first I identified as enby because I knew I wasn't a boy but I thought I couldn't be a woman so I didn't identify as one. So I kinda socially transitioned with chosing a new name, growing my hair out, shaving regularly and sometimes wear feminine clothing back in school. Then after I graduated I went to a hospital and worked there as an intern for one year. I didn't have the guts to out myself there, so I kinda played being a man. Even though I still passed as female sometimes because I had long hair and it was the pandemic so of course I was wearing a mask at work and most people thought "long hair? Must be a woman!" But like being perceived as a man, being called my deadname kinda destroyed me, it was a very difficult time. I even grew a beard because I hated shaving and I wore a mask anyways. I only outed myself to two female friends at work who did accept me even though I kinda ask myself sometimes how they could see me as Tina when I was wearing a beard and having a deep voice. Almost at the end of the internship I started to voice train. And after that I began my time as a nurse in training. In November I started hrt and to voice train with a speech therapist. So yeah I started to feel "really trans" because of this, my pre hrt years started to feel like a weird episode. Then I got into a relationship and in that time I legally changed my gendesex (in Germany there isn't really a difference between the two legally) and my name so now it felt like I'm "really trans" because yeah I was legally a woman now (I still identified myself as enby but I was scared of disadvantages if I had a "divers" gender). Some time passed and I broke up with my ex and started to really identify as a woman. Some time after I got a new haircut because my old haircut was just long hair with nothing special, often my receding hairline was visible (even though it isn't that strong luckily). So now I kinda felt like I'm "really trans". My dysphoria grew and I thought about being trans, being a woman, passing etc more often but I also passed a lot more since that time, I don't know if I was being misgendered since then (except the bf of my mom who did it on accident but I really don't get how he can do that even my mom says that now even though she sometimes remembers me as my old self when she sees me, she clearly sees a woman in front of her). And almost 2 months ago I changed my hrt, initiated a female cycle and started to take progesterone, not long before I started to realize that I'm hetero and started the life of being a bottom lmao. But now this point in my life feels like the starting point of being "really female" and "really trans". I noticed that every step I take in my transition makes me feel more happy and more female but it also comes with viewing my past self as less female and less trans even though I am the same person I was before. And even though it doesn't really bother me or distract me from my day to day life I think about it sometimes. So yeah is this like internalized transphobia?

2024.05.23 23:25 Silver_Discussion_84 Appropriate Names for Orthodox Women

Greetings,
I am a gentile who is working on a novel that features female Israeli characters. As part of my research, I want to be sure that their character names accurately reflect traditional naming conventions for Jews living in Israel. Could some folks let me know if these names are appropriate or not? And if not, what might be some better alternatives?
My motivation for asking is that I want to be careful with fictional characters I write that come from backgrounds I am not a part of. I don't want them to be stereotyped or misrepresented if I ever decide to publish. If this is an inappropriate question for this sub then please ignore and delete this thread.
The characters are both members of a Haredi community. One is of Sephardic descent and her current name is Magdalena, the other is of Sephardic and Ashkenasi descent and is currently named Rebekah. I'll be honest, these are names I came up with mainly because I thought they were pretty "Jewish" sounding names.
However, further armchair research has led me to reconsider. My understanding is that Rebekah is the English pronunciation of the name and a Haredi family would be more likely to use Rivkah. Is this correct? Also, is the "Rebekah" pronunciation also used in Israel or is it soley "Rivkah?"
For Magdalena, my understanding is that this isn't actually a Jewish name, although it has sometimes been used in Jewish diaspora in places like Spain. Also, that the traditional Hebrew form "Magdala" is considered a place name, not a given name. These two points lead me to believe that this is not something a Haredi family living in Israel would name their daughter. Is all this accurate or am I way off base?

2024.05.23 23:22 kativva Am I wrong for feeling down after talking with my boyfriend?

Hi there, this is my first post and also English isn’t my first language, so please be easy on me. I (female, 26) have been with my boyfriend (also 26) for over 4 years now. We are getting along very well, have familiar interests, we care for each other and we’re very supportive of each other. We are both activists, so the topic of politics and social problems are very important to both of us and we like to have a conversation about what’s happening in the world right now from time to time.
Now, I have this strange feeling that almost every time we speak about something important to us, like how retail workers are treated poorly in our country, or about women rights or whatever, when I make a point, he kind of questions it and then twists it so that it becomes his own.
For example: Today we were talking about alcohol and I said, that I heard that gen Z is one of the first generations that voluntarily gives up on drinking or smoking in the big scale. He replied that in our country it’s because of some activist influencer (who is very niche, very left-winged ig influencer and not that many people are as left-winged as this guy in our country) and not because of the fact that we are gen z. I replied, that surely this dude have influence on some people, but I’m taking about bigger picture here, like around the world and I said something how we have been raised, knowing that we are doomed because of global warming etc. And then he said, that he actually thinks that it’s not only about our city (we live in the biggest city in our country) but like, globally this is a tendency for our generation… like, what??? I just told you that!!
I have already told him what mansplaning is, and I feel that sometimes he is manipulating our conversation so he’s in the right all the time. He’s also way smart that I am, so a lot of times he is actually correct and I’m uneducated on some of the topics, which I’m okay about, I like to learn new things. But let me tell you another story, after which I was left completely confused and made me write this post.
So I’m in the middle of doing my masters degree in graphic arts. A few months ago one of the biggest universities in our country called me and asked whether I would be interested in collaborating with them. They offered me a scholarship and asked me if I would like to start my PhD at their school. I was completely star struck, because most of my time during uni, I had to work at caffès and in retail so I coulnd’t really accomplished a lot. I’m a complete no-name in this field. I was so blown away, that immediately I’ve stared daydreaming about project for this PhD thing. I’m a huge screen printing fan, so I came up with the idea of creating a workshop designed for disabled people/wheelchair users - so this technique could reach anyone and everybody could learn how therapeutic it actually is.
When I told this to my bf, I was immediately bombarded with “but, is it even possible?”, “well in my opinion this idea suits architects more than graphic designers”, “maybe you should finish your masters first and then start thinking about PhD”. I usually tell him, that I feel down as soon as it’s starting to get me, but this time I could say a word. This is literally the biggest thing that happened to me from the starts of our relationship, and I feel like he’s not very supportive of it.
So please tell me Reddit, what are your thoughts? Is it already gaslighting? I’m so confused by his behavior, but maybe he’s right? I really don’t know what to think anymore. Ps: I’m sorry for how long this post is :(

2024.05.23 23:18 ContributionNeat6181 The She Center is a scam

This woman used to run an eating disorder group and used her sales tactics and peoples emotions to scam them out of thousands of dollars. After almost being caught, she changed it to being a female empowerment center called the she center. Still using horrible tactics to get money from people. There are many people on here who have been scammed by her or have been shamed on phone calls by her staff. I would love to get a thread going on this if you have any experience with either this or life with Lydia. Her name is Lydia Knight.

2024.05.23 23:18 FMO_JP I’m an arsonist and I need to share what I’ve seen lately

Let me start off by addressing the title. Yes I am an arsonist/pyromaniac. Ever since I was young I’ve had an unhealthy obsession with fire and anything that goes bang. I can remember being as young as 7 years old and stealing my parents match’s to light them and just watch them burn out and to also light small things like individual leafs and sticks on fire. I used to take match’s and lighters to elementary school and do the same thing with some other delinquent friends that liked the same thing. The habit slowly progressed from lighting small fires into bigger and bigger ones. Before I knew it by the time I was in middle and high school I was starting fires that required the police and fire department to show up.
I grew up by the woods and that definitely didn’t help but most of my fires got put out before they could get wildly uncontrollable. Mostly just burned down a few trees before the fire department showed up and put it out. Haven’t got caught for it yet though. My main way of starting these fires was with a cigarette or a joint that I would smoke until I would get it down enough and tie it around a piece of yarn. That yarn would then start burning like a fuse until it hit a pile of dry leafs that I doused in lighter fluid. That shit would light right up and everything else around it I tell you what. I guess I got addicted to the rush of getting away with this type of shit. I’ve also been involved with wrong crowds and done tons of other dumb shit that I won’t get into on this post cause frankly it would be way to long. Also before any of you guys tell me I’m a lunatic and I’m fucked up and got some sort of childhood trauma I’m not addressing “you should go to therapy” blah blah blah, I know. I know I’m fucked up in the head for doing shit like this and it probably is some un delt with childhood trauma. I’ve been to therapy many times for this and many other things like my anger issues I just don’t really believe in it and honestly think it’s for pussies. So save all your preaching bullshit for someone else that cares. That’s not the point of this post.
I’m in my early 20’s now and recently I’ve been going around to abandoned building in my town and towns around mine starting fires there. I was born and raised in a town outside of a major city in western Massachusetts. I’m not gonna name the city in case this makes it to the cops and they can track me down in some way but I think it’s important to state that the tons of abandoned mills and failed businesses that are all around here are great targets for someone like me. Especially since I’ve upgraded from my fires in the woods to more risky targets. Hell I’m probably doing these fucks a favor so they can collect the insurance on it without hiring some crackhead do it and risking them snitching when they inevitably gets caught. These guys are getting it from me for free!
I need to talk about this weird thing I experienced lately though. Old abandoned buildings often have stories of being haunted and are overall unsettling no matter where you are. Just something about the nature of the fucked up things that happened there whether it’s an old insane asylum where the patients where tourtured or old mills where some worker got grinned up in a giant machine and now haunts the building. Along with the large population of homeless people that stay in the buildings so they can sleep and have a place to get high for the night. The eerie silence and every little thing that goes bump in the night is enough to make just about anyone scared even if it is just all bullshit story’s. Anyways my last burning I went to one of the old loading docks/storage buildings that was part of my towns textile mill. The small building was separate from the huge main building that workers used to actually make the textiles and was right next to a bunch of other storage and loading docks just like it. I broke a window and climbed into the smaller building with my lighter fluid, my yarn fuse, some kindling, and my pack of cigarettes that I would use to start the fire. As I jumped through the window into the large open area of the loading dock I see all the dust particles going right by my phones flash light. Nobody’s been here in years I think to myself. Immediately I see empty beer bottles, some plastic chairs and other trash scattered around all from other kids who broke in here to chill a little bit and have a good time. Now all I had to do was find a good corner that had some flammable materials that could get this shit ablaze.
This place was perfect it’s almost like they set it up for me I was like a kid in a candy store. These dumb fucks stacked all the wooden chairs and wooden tables that all the old workers used to work on on one side that covered damn near 1/3rd of the building. All old decrepit wood that was ready to be set ablaze. I doused a lot of it with lighter fluid and set up my make shift lighting device when I hear it. “Jackson. What are you doing?” Like the voice of a disapproving authority figure that was also questioning how I could be so stupid. It was so clear like someone was leaning right over me talking right into my ear. I jumped back expecting a cop or some security guard to be standing there I turned around expecting to be put in cuffs right at that second. When I turned around though nobody was there I frantically shined my phones flashlight around and it only confirmed that it was only me in the building surrounded by deafening silence. “Must be my imagination” I said. Not my first time in these spooky buildings and thinking I heard something that isn’t really there. I recollected myself and went back to tying my half smoked cigarette to the yarn. As I see it start to light the yarn I run out of the building.
Like many other arsonists I get my kick out of seeing the fire spread and fully engulf the structure. I run to a nearby patch of trees and bushes where I hunker down to watch the place go up in flames and the inevitable fire engine or 2 show up to frantically put out my work. Just as I thought, the place went right up. It was great just like I thought it would be. It was beautiful. Watching the flames reach as high as 3 stories I sat and admired as this small one story building was up in flames I was loving it. As I heard the sirens of the fire engines in the distance I layed down further covering myself in the brush waiting to see them put out my hard work. I don’t blame them it is their job after all. I’m just glad to see them actually doing something for once instead of sitting on their ass and collecting their pay checks for doing nothing.
Here’s where things get especially strange though. As I lay down on my stomach still admiring this huge fire (honestly some of my best work) I saw something. From the garage door opening of the loading dock I saw 3 figures appear out of the flame. All of them dark black silhouettes obviously visible in contrast to the yellow and orange flame that they were standing behind. One a tall male adult figure, the other a slightly less tall female figure and the last one a small child like figure all standing right next to each other. They stood there for what felt like minutes on end looking right at me with their non existent eyes. Just staring, knowing that I was trying to hide in the bushes while the sirens in the background grew louder. I laid there on the ground stricken with a sense of dread and overall fear as they stood there. The large male figure raised his hand and pointed right at me. I knew it was directed at me. I was shaking at this point from fear. A fear that I don’t know if I’ve ever felt in my life time. The sirens grew louder and louder I could see the red and white lights off in the distance the fire engines had to be a few hundred yards away. I looked away and started shaking my head around feeling that I had to be seeing things. I closed my eyes and started telling myself that I was just going crazy and that these things in front of me where not actually there. I opened up my eyes to see the fire engines and police arriving and looked specifically at the loading dock to see that the silhouettes where gone. I watched the firemen frantically getting out and hooking up their hoses to put out my flame. I watched as they methodically fought the flames like they have had to fight many of my works in the past.
When my work of art was fully put out I snaked away and walked back to my car still in shock from what I just saw.
