What Is The Power Output Of A Solar Panel

2024.05.14 08:10 SolarSolutionCompany What Is The Power Output Of A Solar Panel

Solar panels are marvels of modern engineering, silently transforming sunlight into usable electricity. But what exactly is the power output of a solar panel? How much energy can you realistically expect from these sleek, sun-soaking rectangles?
This comprehensive guide will demystify solar panel power output, explaining the key concepts, influencing factors, and how it translates to meeting your energy demands.

Watts and Kilowatts: The Language of Solar Power

Like light bulbs, solar panels are rated in watts (W). This measurement indicates their maximum power production under ideal conditions, known as peak sun.

Standard Solar Panel Wattage

Modern residential solar panelstypically range from 250 to 450 watts per panel. This means a single panel could power several small appliances or a significant portion of a larger one. However, most homes need multiple panels to cover their entire energy needs.

Factors Affecting Solar Panel Output

The power output of a solar panel isn't static; it's influenced by several factors:

From Watts to Kilowatt-Hours: Your Solar Energy Production

The amount of electricity your solar panels generate over time is measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh). This is the unit you see on your electricity bill.
To estimate your annual production, consider:

  1. Your System Size: The total wattage of all your panels combined (e.g., a 6 kW system has 6,000 watts).
  2. Peak Sun Hours: The average daily hours of direct sunlight in your location.
  3. Panel Efficiency: This will vary based on the specific model.
A solar professional can provide a more accurate estimate tailored to your location and system.

Matching Output to Your Needs

The goal is to match your solar panel system's output to your home's energy consumption. Factors to consider include:

Task 3: Creative Writing

Prompt: Write humorous email to my boss explaining why I'm not coming to work today.
Spoiler: GPT-4 wins this round
GPT-4o Response
Dear [Boss's Name],
I hope this email finds you in good spirits and free from any surprise mythical creature invasions. Unfortunately, I regret to inform you that I won't be able to make it to work today due to an unexpected and rather unusual circumstance.
As I was getting ready to leave for the office this morning, I encountered a particularly tenacious unicorn in my backyard. Now, I know what you're thinking: "Unicorns don't exist!" But believe me, this one was very real, very sparkly, and very insistent on staying put.
Despite my best efforts to coax it away with promises of rainbows and magical meadows, the unicorn refused to budge. It seems it has taken a liking to my garden gnomes, which is both adorable and problematic. The local authorities and animal control were no help, as they understandably don't have a protocol for unicorn-related incidents.
As a result, I'm currently in negotiations with a local wizard who specializes in mythical creature relocations. He assures me that he can safely transport the unicorn to a more appropriate habitat, but it will take most of the day to complete the spell.
I apologize for any inconvenience my absence may cause and assure you that I will be back at my desk as soon as this magical situation is resolved. In the meantime, I will be available by phone and email if you need anything urgent (assuming the unicorn doesn't eat my Wi-Fi router).
Thank you for your understanding and patience with this rather fantastical predicament.
Best regards,
[Your Name]
P.S. If you hear rumors of a rainbow appearing over my neighborhood, don't be alarmed. It's just the unicorn's farewell gesture. 🌈
GPT-4 Response
Hi [Boss's Name],
I hope this message finds you well—or at least better than I am currently faring. I regret to inform you that I am unable to make it to the office today due to a highly unusual and unexpected situation. This morning, as I was preparing to brave the perilous journey to work, I stumbled upon a daunting challenge... a jigsaw puzzle!
You see, last night, I made the mistake of saying, "How hard can it be?" while looking at this 5000-piece enigma. Little did I know, it took this as a personal challenge. I’ve been recruited by the pieces themselves, which have conspired to keep me at home until the entire landscape is meticulously pieced together. They have taken my cat as a hostage, who, as I type, is comfortably sleeping atop the partially completed puzzle.
Despite my best efforts, every attempt to leave has been thwarted by another piece mysteriously fitting into place, compelling me to continue. It’s a vicious cycle, but someone has to solve it, and that someone appears to be me.
On a more serious note, the real culprit of my absence is a stubborn cold that has decided to visit me without an invitation. I thought it best to keep my germs confined to the puzzle battlefield, rather than share them with the team.
I will be checking my emails regularly in between my bouts with the puzzle (and my sneezes), so I should be reachable for any urgent matters. Thank you for your understanding and patience.
Wishing you a less eventful day at the office!
Best regards,
[Your Name]

Summary

GPT-4o: Good for simple tasks. It's also much faster than GPT-4. It looks like a really good replacement of GPT-3.5
GPT-4: Still better option for complex tasks that require multiple steps.

2024.05.14 07:11 SweetBearCub Off-grid solar recommendations please! Needs to be portable inside my vehicle. Level 1 EV charging (around 1.7 kw) plus more, for camping trips of up to two weeks off grid at a time.

Of course, not all of this would run at the same time.
Things that I want to power:
I'm unsure of the wattage on the appliances and smaller items.
Of course I'll also need to account for a reasonable loss factor due to clouds, less than optimal placement of panels, etc.
I'd like to fit all of this into the EV for transport, preferably inside, but it will also have a hitch cargo box, and a roof box if necessary.
I'd love to be able to do level 2 charging, but I doubt that I could carry ~8kw of solar panels, plus a box capable of generating 240 volt AC from that input!

2024.05.14 06:12 SunRayCity Past Periods of Anti-South Asian Hate in Canada, Link to Rapid Population Growth

Period: 1900-1908
The South Asian population in Canada grew by 5000%, with most of the new settlers being Punjabi Sikhs living in British Columbia, often working in nearby towns in Washington.
Anti-Asian Riots in Vancouver (1907)) - 10,000 white Canadians attack Japanese, Chinese and South Asian Canadian residents, homes and businesses in Vancouver. Most South Asians in the city were former military vets who kept weapons in the house, so they protected themselves from most of the violence that was inflicted on the Chinese and Japanese communities.
Bellingham Riots (1907) - inspired by the riots in Vancouver, 400-500 white men "threw the East Indian workers into the streets, beat them, and pocketed their valuables." 125 Indians fled the town.
Continuous Journey Act is Passed (1908)—In response to anti-Indian sentiment in Canada, the government passed a restrictive immigration act requiring Indians to travel directly to Canada from their country of origin. This was done to try and make immigration from the subcontinent essentially impossible, as ships from India would stop in Japan or Hawaii on their way to Canada due to the distance.
Period: 1967-1981
After Pierre Trudeau's "points system" to immigration, the South Asian population in Canada grew by 3295% - unlike in past decades, most new South Asian immigrants in this period came to Ontario instead of BC.
W. Pitman's 1977 report to the Toronto Transit Commission, Now is Not Too Late, highlights that out of 31 racially motivated attacks on transit, the vast majority have targeted young men of "Indian-subcontinent origin."
In 1976, South Asians living in Toronto reported rampant discrimination in the workplace. In 1977, South Asians protested against racism at Toronto's Queens Park. News articles from the same year show random acts of violence against people of South Asian origin in Ontario, including agitators forcing their way into homes and throwing bricks at South Asians in a city an hour west of Toronto.
Current Period: 2016 - Present
The growth rates have been nowhere near what they were in these other two periods. Based on immigration and census data, this period probably saw the South Asian population grow by between 45% and 55%. What's different this time around are:
  1. Numbers: This ~50% growth rate represents an addition of about 1 million people. The highest gains to the South Asian Canadian population in history was seen between 2016 and 2021, and the 2026 Census may reveal even higher population growth in sheer numbers.
  2. Location: Facing strains on affordability and in the job market in traditional immigration hubs like Toronto and Vancouver, much of the new migrants are moving to outlying areas. As many are coming to Canada first through the community college system, they are accepting offers in areas without an established South Asian community. For example, in the relatively remote city of Timmins, where there were only 170 South Asians out of a population of 41,000 in 2016 - there are now over 6,000 international students, mostly from India. Other cities and towns have seen the desi population double (Kitchener), triple (Oshawa, Charlottetown, Halifax), up to a 900% increase (ex. Woodstock) in less than a decade. If the population grows more rapidly than people's attitudes and exposure to our cultures do, this can cause major backlash.
  3. Visibility: Where past generations of Desi blue-collar immigrants worked in factories and warehouses in Ontario, and in the lumber mills, construction and canneries in BC - new migrants tend to be in the customer-facing service industry (fast food, retail, delivery). While population figures have increase significantly, many Canadians may only interact with South Asians in these places, which leads them to believe the rate of population growth is much larger than it actually is.
  4. High Profile Negative Media Reports: From the 2018 Humboldt Bus Crash to the Killing of Harjit Nijjar to Extortion by South Asian Criminal Syndicates. I don't to have to spell out all of the negative press lately, but aside from the Lower Mainland Gang Conflict - South Asians have not had such a negative image in the public eye.
This is not some conclusive peer-reviewed study. History is a great teacher though.
Will it get better? There are things we can control like advocacy, unity and standing up for ourselves and others. If there is a link between mass immigration and racism, it's beyond our control. The government is restricting the number of student visas issued starting September, 2024. As it stands, there doesn't seem to be any media reports about how South Asian Canadians are discriminated against due to the rapid growth in immigration, though many of us feel it. I think this is a conversation that needs to be heard by politicians and journalists as the sentiment could affect everything from employment, to social lives to housing. This may just be something we have to endure for the period, as generations in the past have had to as well.
TLDR: We are currently experiencing rapid immigration-driven population growth in the South Asian community in Canada. There seems to be a link between this growth, especially to places where we have not already had a presence, and the racism directed towards the community by those who live in those areas. If people's attitudes and exposure don't change as fast as the community grows, this could be a major cause of the racism many of us experience.

2024.05.14 00:46 Jolly-Candle-6449 What do you all think about this charging option?

I am going to buy a 9000 Watt inverter generator with 7500 running watts and 50amp. It will have 240 volt outlet with both the lock and three prong plug in outlets. It also has dual fuel (gas and propane) options. I travel a lot and am in remote locations frequently such as on a lake in the woods, I believe this is sufficient for charging my vehicle and will save a ton of money over time, thoughts?

2024.05.13 22:05 ciaociaodisco Seeking advice: 25 year olds in VHCOL city

Hi all, long time lurker and first time poster from a throwaway as my main account has a lot of identifying information on it :) I hope this is the right place to post this.
TDLR: 1) I'd love feedback on my own finances right now to make sure I'm set up for success and 2) how to help my partner plan for a change in financial situation. Apologies in advance for the long post, but hoping I've shared most of the relevant info.

My own finances:

I (25F) live in a VHCOL and have been working for almost three years. My W2 TC is $122,000 (Salary $112,500 + $9500 bonus) and I anticipate that it will increase due a promotion to at least TC of $150,000, but I'm not counting these chickens before they hatch. I also have a side business (LLC) that brought in $40,000 last year, and I forecast will bring in a bit less this year (maybe around $30,000). Below is a breakdown of my savings and expenses:
Savings:
TDLR: Maxing my 401K and Roth IRA. I keep $25,000 in a HYSA for emergencies. I'm not sure if I'm sitting on too much cash.
Monthly Expenses:
Some of these are not costs incurred monthly (such as clothes and travel - we don't travel every month and I'm not buying clothes every month), but roughly how much it would be per month from the annualized amount. No debt: No student loans, CC debt, we rent and likely will for awhile, and do not have a car.
I'd love to hear any feedback or advice you have for me: Am I sitting on too much cash/how much should I keep in my checking account? Am I right to continue to prioritize putting money in the brokerage over the HYSA? What should I keep doing and what should I do differently?

My partner's finances:

My partner (25M) has been a student until now and will be starting a potentially very lucrative career in October after graduating. We've been very fortunate that both of us do not have any student loans or debt and that his expenses have been taken care of by a mix of largely scholarships and family support, so he is essentially starting from scratch. His starting TC will be around $245,000 (Salary $225,000 + Bonus $20,000) with a salary ladder for increases each subsequent year after.
We'll continue living in the same place, so rent will be the same ($1250) and we spend around the same amount on groceries ($250). Besides that, the only other expense he has is transport (~$120/month) and the gym ($10/month). I cover utilities/subscriptions for us). His only other expense is travel, which is probably around $2500 annually, which his internships in school have covered for him).
I had him set up a Roth IRA last year that he maxed out in 2023, besides that he has modest savings (~$5000 in a general savings account that likely generates next to no interest). This is the plan that I've helped laid out for him after he starts:
Beyond that I'm really not sure that makes sense and could use advice.
Thank you for reading if you've made it this far, and really looking forward to hearing any advice you have!

2024.05.13 20:05 jbiz143 Colima and docker instability: randomly freezing, requiring reset

I've been trying to troubleshoot an issue with Colima I've been seeing for weeks.
Colima will install and start fine, and I can start my ~20 containers without issue. However, mostly randomly, colima and docker will suddenly be completely unresponsive and containers will stop.
The only remedy is to restart the mac and run colima delete and start over.
I'm running colima on an Intel i9 with 32GB RAM.
I'm hoping someone has been able to resolve the instability issues with colima running docker on a Mac. The performance of docker on colima is so much better than Docker Desktop and I'd rather not have to go back to it!

But we don't work with everyone!
Our solutions are ideal for healthcare clinics, dental offices, legal practices, real estate agencies, and any business tired of the heavy lifting involved in lead handling and appointment scheduling.
However, our solutions are only useful when you already have a steady stream of leads either through outbound, paid ads, or organic traffic.
If you don't already have that, we also provide lead generation services but that will obviously cost more.
Exact Deliverables -
Pricing?
Normally, something like this would easily cost you $2000-5000.
But I'm currently trying to expand my portfolio, so I'm offering a special deal. You can get any one of these services for just $500, plus some extra bonuses that I can't list here.
Note: I can only take on 3 clients as that's all I can handle at the moment. After that, the prices will drastically go up.
Interested?
Send me a message to schedule a quick discovery call to see how we can help!

2024.05.13 19:37 HairSilver8785 Who's using Silicate Salt Batteries?

Hi guys, I have Silicate Salt batteries from watts247 and am having a heck of a time getting good data on min and max voltage. I have 12v batteries in series for 48v. They work, charge to the max 56.4v (that was suggested by distributor). I have 40kwh of batteries, but a 2500w load will have them sagging a few volts quickly. In order to setup my victron shunt, I need to tell it when the batteries are truly "full", which I'm having trouble identifying.
I also can't find the minimum safe voltage or SOC minimum voltage to identify when to release them of loads and switch over to generator.
The batteries say on the side:
Mine are in 48v config and I was told to run them to 56.4 bulk, 54v float. That translates to 14.1v max charge which is lower than the "cycle use" printed on the battery.
I also have been unable to gather the true minimum safe voltage or what voltage = 0% SOC so I can stay away from there.
I do notice that if you charge to say 56.4v and it stops charging, any load quickly drops the voltage like a lead-acid battery. The Gro-watts I'm running don't seem to act like that have an absorption stage but maybe I'm not understanding. I just know as soon as you put any load on a fully charged battery, your voltage is way what you charged it to, within moments.
I'd love to talk to someone else using these batteries.

2024.05.13 19:07 KYSmartPerson So frustrated with solar companies!

I recognize that this is a DIY group so this may not be an ideal post for the group but hear me out...
I purchased the Lycan 5000 Power Box and have used it successfully to power my garage off-grid. I am keeping it charged via utility power to the garage. I have installed a transfer switch to prevent back feeding the grid and to switch between battery power and utility power.
I have not installed any solar panels, yet. I can fit up to 4,300-4,400W of solar on the roof of my garage which faces south. I have been trying to find a company to install panels on my roof and just run 2 strings with MC4 connectors into my garage to plug into the Lycan. That's it. No microinverters or net-metering necessary. Everything is already there and waiting to be powered by solar.
The only thing I need is an electrical permit and a building permit and an inspection of the roof shingles (12 years old) to begin. I've reached out to the city which has an incentive program where they have vetted 2 companies to install solar at a 25% discount for homeowners above and beyond the federal tax credit of 30%. They program requires a minimum of 5kw to qualify. I have asked them to install the extra 2 panels on the north side of my garage (25 degree angle) but they say they cannot do that. Neither company wants to take on this project even though it is the simplest installation they will ever do.
They also say they cannot connect to my equipment which I am not asking them to do. I just need them to run 2 strings with a positive and a negative for each string with an MC4 connector on each end. I need them wired to be at least 60V with a maximum of 150V on each string with no microinverters and no NMS. I'll run the garage off-grid so no other equipment is needed. The reason for no net metering is that I cannot possibly generate enough power to feed back to the grid. I have dual climate systems (a 2-ton heat pump and a 1-ton AC). Even if I did generate excess, it is simply not worth the hassle. It's not going to help offset my bill very much at all.
The rules say that all solar panels tied to the grid via NMS have to automatically turn off if power to the meter goes out. This is unacceptable to me. I want my panels working ESPECIALLY when the power goes out. I understand WHY they require this but there are other ways to handle the issue. I believe the ability to turn off is contained in the microinverters but I am only guessing about that. An automatic transfer switch should solve that problem while still allowing solar to power my home in case of a blackout.
So, I simply cannot get anyone to agree to install panels on my garage given that I own the Lycan. I would normally install the panels myself but am no longer a young man and men like me fall off ladders all the time. I want qualified people to wire the panels and install the rails but it seems I am SOL when it comes to that.
If anyone knows an installer who will do what I want, send them my way. If anyone of you are interested in taking on this project, I am willing to pay. I just want to move forward with this project.
Any ideas?

2024.05.13 10:51 desppar Help Unraveling a TikTok Mystery: Alan Watts Lecture

Hey everyone,
I recently found a TikTok video featuring what sounds like Alan Watts talking about how happiness isn't tied to jobs, degrees, or following the usual paths. The voice sounds just like him and it really caught my attention. I’ve tried to track down the full lecture it came from but hit a dead end every time. The TikTok comments weren’t helpful—some folks even suggested other unrelated sources.
I’m starting to wonder if this might be an AI-generated clip or maybe someone else’s voice. So, I’m reaching out to see if anyone here might know more about this. Have you come across this lecture? Or is it possible we’re dealing with some clever tech mimicry?
I’d really appreciate any leads or insights you might have. Thanks for helping me figure this out!

2024.05.13 09:56 Duty_Same Jeep Gladiator want more bass! SPL?! Sundown American Bass D4S JP23?

Reading for about a week still have some concern about upgrading my system.
Current system- Morel Maximo 6.5 component x 2 JL RD900 5ch JL stealth box 2 10tw1 pancakes
No big 3 upgrade yet 240a Mopar alternator (tow package) Group 97R AGM battery 80ah?
Just really not happy with those pancake subs and I dont want a custom build box from a shop either but I ended up finding this full size 10”x2 enclosure from Fox Acoustic. I want to try some SPL stuff thought it would be fun. So hang tight with me.
Spec Underseat enclosure with 2” seat lifter Air space: 2.0 cubic feet NET Port tune frequency: 35hz https://www.foxacoustics.com/products/jeep-jt-gladiator-2-10-vented-sub-box
The customer service did recommend for SPL Sundown SA classic with 2000 watt amp will hit but the main thing is will that under the seat subs enclosure 2.0 cu ft take 3000- 5000 watts or it doesn’t matter or I’m stuck at lower watts system?
At first I wanted those budget friendly American Bass XFL but seem like I don’t have enough airspace for those subs as it require 1.25-1.5 cu ft each. Most of the people recommend bigger box saying need the space to push it but I also read if I give them more power than recommended RMS I should get a smaller box so in this case it’s okay to have less airspace? I’m confused. Also not sure it will even fit in the box.
The correct air space specs put me right at those Sundown SA V2 10” 1 cu ft requirement each and it will fit for sure. Sundown is not cheap at all so I’m not sure what to do here. Should I do a JP23 stripe later or JP23 V2 see if my electrical can handle it and be done with it (on paper should be a yes) or go bigger with a D4S LTO 6.0 battery and a JP33 should be pretty sweet setup right here just more money? Or fuck it go Sundown U series V2 and even more beans? I don’t think the subs box can push any other bigger subs.
So as of right now I’m leaning towards the JP23 V2 but the JP33 tho….
JP84 400 watts swap the 5ch JP23 v2 2800 watts Sundown SA V2 10 4 ohm x 2 Big 3
Honestly I have no idea what high watts “SPL system” are like and I will go shop around in local shops (they kind of sucks) but I already bought the enclosure and it is on the way so any thing will help.

I have an off grid cabin up in the mountains, and I've been running makita 18v lithium since 2008 for my main tool platform for work, so I pretty much everything for a weekend at the cabin runs on Makita batteries. Mostly lights, fans, chainsaw blower, USB chargers, etc.
I number my batteries sequentially as I get them with a sharpie, currently on #66.
I've bought a bunch of 18x2 kits that come with 4 batteries and a charger, plus all the other single chargers from the drill and impact kits, I have so many chargers. The pic is just the ones up at my cabin. I have plenty more at home and at my shop.
I like to run my generator as little as possible so i max it out, 16 fast chargers is theoretically 3800 watts if they are all charging max current.
Anyways, here's my question. I was working under a tarp while I was building my shed, and while I thought they were all protected, it was windy and a bunch of droplets came in got the chargers wet. Not too wet, though, I've used my drills and saws out in the rain on dozens of projects and got the tools and batteries way wetter than these chargers got. But somehow it knocked out 5 different charging bays. Some dual chargers lost one bay? This was weeks ago and they are all bone dry now.
These chargers were not being used in the rain, I turned the generator off.
All they toast? Is their some sort of water sensing circuit breaker? What could have gone wrong?
