2024.06.07 20:42 ChodeMcGee Bootstrapping a highly functional SaaS as a non-dev

Hey folks. I run a growth marketing agency and have been lucky enough to work with some great founders and CMOs from 50+ SaaS companies over the past 5 years. But this post is not about that.
About 2 years ago, I started to hear two repeating themes from some of my clients.
Theme 1 was: "We need to capture and synthesize more feedback from our users", and theme 2 was along the lines of: "We aren't actively pursuing reviews because we are weary of negative reviews effecting our reputation".
Based on these two themes, I became obsessed with figuring out a solution. Something that would kill 2 birds with one stone, being a liaison between feedback and reputation.
IDEA PHASE
The idea behind TrustLoop was simply this, so I got to work. First, I designed a system to build surveys and capture feedback. Then I created a mechanism to separate the survey if it is positive feedback and ask the person leaving the positive feedback to make it public based on the links our clients add (G2, TrustPilot, etc), and doing so in a way they didn't have to rewrite their review (copying it to their clipboard automatically).
Finally, I would add some AI elements to help our users digest the feedback by surfacing any common complaints, and areas for actionable improvement.
Design / Development Part 1
I posted on Upwork with a breakdown of the idea, all the requirements needed, added a budget and pushed it live.
After thoroughly interviewing several candidates, I ended up going with a two-person designer / developer team from Ukraine.
They quoted me at $10K for the whole project on a 6-month timeline which was about what I was willing to spend and wait. We set up milestones and got to work.
The UX/UI design phase went well, but about 3 months into development, I started seeing some delays. The war in Ukraine was getting worse, and the dev became less and less responsive. Unfortunately, I was naive and paid forward for some of the work that became more and more obvious that it wasn't going to get completed.
I walked away after 6 months and $6K of the payments already spent with a half-built product.
Design / Development Part 2
Maybe it was a sunk-cost fallacy, but I was still determined to get my product off the ground.
I decided to hire an internal team, increase the budget significantly, and rebuild the product from the ground up.
I became obsessed with creating something useful, something people would truly benefit from using.
The project was going much better than before, I truly enjoyed working with my two interns (design and dev), a dedicated full-stack dev, and some freelancers.
But costs began to add up ...
I was funneling money from my agency to pay for this project, and I lost track of spend.
Pre-launch
Fast forward to 3 months ago, and we now have a completed product that functions like I had hoped. I started reaching out to my clients to gather feedback and many of them tried it out... I was nervous to get their feedback (kind of ironic), but it was overwhelmingly positive. There were a few requested features, some updates, and other question, but many of them converted into paying users after the 14-day free trial.
The last few months have just been tying up loose ends, building out emails, adding other software tools, etc.
I finally calculated my total spend on this project so far: $27,500
As a non-dev, I should have expected costs to add up and increase my budget, but in the age of AI, I didn't expect it to get this crazy (it is A LOT for me).
Luckily, the product is performing well - we have 17 paying users even pre-public launch, so the ARR is about $5K.
Launch (soon)
I will be publicly launching TrustLoop in a few weeks and am excited but also quite nervous. I never expected to put so much into a product like this, and I truly hope people find it useful. Luckily, I run a marketing agency, so I have tons of ideas on how to market it.
Anyways, this is my journey so far - being an entrepreneur is crazy and it takes intensity and patience at the same time.
Cheers!

2024.06.07 20:29 Wide_Entrepreneur928 Health & Happiness - My Journey With A Glioblastoma Diagnosis

Hi Everyone, later this month I will be 7 years out of my Glioblastoma diagnosis. I was 30 years old when I was diagnosed and am 37 years old now. Over the last 6+ years, I have been put in contact with many people battling the same diagnosis and decided to create a Word document titled "Health & Happiness", which details all of the things I have incorporated into my healing journey. Everyone is different and I am simply sharing what has worked for me. Neither me or my wife are in the medical field however we have spent a lot of time researching things to integrate into my day-to-day life which we believe are keeping me healthy. For the first 5 years of my journey I received MRI's every 8 weeks; now that I am more than 5 years out I get MRI's every 12 weeks. Below is a copy and paste of the document:

· Eliminate as much stress as I possibly can from my everyday life
· Be present in my mind
· Yoga
· Spin
· Writing down 3 things that I am grateful for each night before bed
· Using Frankincense oil on my feet and pillow, every night, before bed
· Morning Routine: Body Scan Meditation, Drink a liter of water when you wake up (Your body is most dehydrated after a full night’s sleep), stretch or some type of quick 10 minute workout to get your body moving in the morning, “I Am” affirmations (I will usually do this right after I finish my morning stretching, I will typically say 5-10 things out loud to myself, for example (I am healthy, I am a loving husband, I am kind, etc…), statements of gratitude (I will mix this in with my “I Am” affirmations, for example, I am grateful for my bed, I am grateful for my home, I am grateful to have access to organic produce, etc…) I try to focus on this that I have in my life instead of things that I want, rubbing a 1-2 drops of any organic essential oil that you like in your hands in the morning and taking 4-5 deep breaths with your hands over your mouth and nose (this is very helpful in awakening your sensory functions), lastly, I listen to music when getting ready for work in the morning. Soft music in the morning taps into the creative side of your brain and research has shown that individuals that listen to soft music in the morning are more creative and productive throughout the day than those who don’t.
· Taking a walk every day to get fresh air and disconnect, normally with the dogs J
· Circuit Training
· Acupuncture / Energy Healing

· Keeping my body warm at all times. We learned from Traditional Chinese Medicine, that keeping the body warm protects the kidneys, which means all of the other organs can do their job and the body can heal. Also, just for example, when you have a fever, it’s your body’s way of protecting all of your vital organs so that they can do their job, as well as preventing any proliferation of bacteria and viruses.
o http://aprilcrowell.com/asian-medicine/warm-to-the-core/
· John of God – Brazil. Lauren’s cousin went down to visit him during the 4th quarter of 2018 and took a head shot of myself as well as a two-page letter sharing my story. He is a spiritual healer that helped a young man get to a state of meditation where his brain tumor shrunk to nothing. He sent back two bottles of Herbs (Ground Up Passion Flower Leaves – Actual Name: Passiflora) for me to take. There is a large portion about him in the book “Radical Remission” and he is featured in “Heal” as well.
· I brush my teeth with my less dominant hand once a day and then with my dominant hand the other two times.
o This helps stimulate parts of the brain that are not in use often. You can do this with many things, brushing your hair, using your less dominant foot in sports, washing your body with soap while showering.
· Drinking and eating out of glass vs. plastic. It’s having an effect on both men and women’s endocrine systems (hormones, fertility, etc…)
o https://www.plasticpollutioncoalition.org/pft/2017/7/26/new-endocrine-disrupting-chemicals-are-undermining-male-fertility
· This may sound like something so simple but it’s quite challenging: When moving/changing physical positions I am always present. For example, every time I sit, I tell myself I am sitting, every time I stand to walk, I tell myself I am standing. This helps me to bring my mind into a present state and focus less on the future or past.
o This was a recommendation during one of my guided meditations.
· Laughing, loving and hugging every day. This was a big take away for Lauren and I from reading the book Radical Remission. It’s important to laugh every day, love every day and receive and give hugs to people every day. I know, I know, it sounds crazy but it has worked on other folks, we practice it every day. We try to watch more comedies if we are going to watch a movie on the weekend, an easy way to incorporate laughter into your life.
· We recently added air purifiers into our home. I also have one in my office. We purchased the Molekule, but through research we found that the Air Doctor is another good option (and I believe also a little less expensive). Here is a discount code for $100 off a Molekule: MetroMD100
· IR Sauna (Infrared Saunas)
o These are great for detoxifying the body, especially after air travel. I go to Perspire (https://perspiresaunastudio.com/) here in Orange County.
· Epsom Salt Baths – Especially after air or any long car travel as well.
· Grounding/Earthing – Walk around barefoot on your backyard grass or anywhere there is a plot of “Earth”. Feel the grass between your toes or if you are at the beach, be aware of the sand between your toes. We are all energy and Earth contains energy, manifest the energy from the Earth into your body for increased healing, awareness, presence and mindfulness. I do this for about 10-15 minutes.
· Cold Showers (as cold as the shower can get) every morning and Ice Plunges. Look up the “Wim Hof Method”
o https://www.wimhofmethod.com/

Diet:
· For the past 6+ years we have followed a whole food plant-based diet (vegan without the junk food). Cancer cells feed off of Glucose (Sugar) firstly, but can also utilize glutamate as a second source of fuel (which is in all animal protein, land and sea). I have also cut out all artificial sugars from my diet. Dairy is also extremely inflammatory for your body and has been linked to cancer in many research studies.
· White Carbs and Gluten - We have eliminated these from our diet as much as we possibly can. Even for people who do not have a ‘gluten intolerance,’ gluten is very hard on the body’s digestive system. Excessive consumption can lead to a leaky gut, which causes toxins to seep out of the digestive tract into the body/blood making it hard for your immune system to work at its peak. Also, most gluten products have high levels of glyphosate, which they’ve linked to cancer. Glyphosate acts like an antibiotic to your gut (not in a good way), wiping out all of the beneficial gut flora which are there to keep your immune system working efficiently.
· Alkaline Foods and Water - Cancer cells cannot grow in an alkaline environment; we drink water with a PH level of 9.5. We recently invested in a Kangen water machine for our home. A level of 7 PH is balanced and anything below 7 is acidic. Cancer cells thrive in an acidic environment. Things that make your body acidic are alcohol, dairy, meat, processed and artificial sugars and gluten.
· I drink warm lemon water with apple cider vinegar every morning, which also helps alkalize the body and keep stomach acid levels at a great pH for food absorption.
· We practice intermittent fasting, which allows the body to not worry about processing food for a large portion of the day but rather allow its immune system to be working at its peak ability. We started out by only eating from 12 PM - 8 PM and are working toward 12 PM - 6 PM. Intermittent fasting is really important when taking Temodar (or any chemotherapy). It allows the body to protect the healthy cells while targeting cancer cells. There is so much research showing the benefits of intermittent fasting for cancer patients.
· This is a really interesting article citing a lot of different sources regarding a plant-based diet and fighting/preventing cancer:
o https://www.vivahealth.org.uk/veganhealth/dont-feed-cancer

Other Things to Research:
· Dr. Sebi – He is the doctor who put a full-page ad in the NY Post and was sued to take it down. When he went to his court hearing the judge asked him if he could prove that he healed anyone, and he furnished 70 patients of his that were healed by his treatment and the Judge declared “not guilty” on all the charges that were brought against him by the State of New York.
o The link below is a quick rundown of his life. I believe the pharmaceutical companies were heavily involved with his death in while he was imprisoned in Honduras.

· Radiation Stickers for your cell phone and laptop:
o https://www.amazon.com/Radiation-Protection-Labobbon-Household-Appliances/dp/B078SSD6QC
· We also try to use the ‘cleanest’ hygiene products we can find. There are many harmful chemicals in our everyday toothpastes, shampoos, deodorants, etc. Chemicals to avoid in hygiene products below:
o Shampoo – Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, basically any ‘sulfate,’ Parabens, Sodium Benzoate. Brands that we like are: 100% Pure, Acure, Alaffia
o Toothpaste – Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, basically any ‘sulfate’, fluoride, triclosan, DEA, Propylene Glycol, Microbeads. One of the worst toothpaste brands out there is Colgate. We use Himalaya Botanique & Nature’s Gate as well as Dr. Bronner’s All-In-One toothpaste.
o Deodorant – Aluminum, Parabens, Triclosan, DEA, Propylene Glycol. We have been testing out natural deodorants for years and our favorite (although not vegan) is from a company called Primally Pure. We’ve also started to use a brand called Joyous Organics with clean (and minimal) ingredients.
o A great website to reference for beauty product ingredients and their safety is https://www.ewg.org/
§ Skin Deep Database – This is where you will find clean products to put on your body.

· The Clean Fifteen and Dirty Dozen
o The EWG, each year, comes out with an updated list of produce that we should be buying organic 100% of the time (Dirty Dozen), especially people like you and I who have had cancer. The Clean fifteen can be purchased conventionally if you can’t find them in an organic form and conventional is the only option
o https://www.ewg.org/foodnews/clean-fifteen.php
o https://www.ewg.org/foodnews/dirty-dozen.php

· The link below is a good read on Monsanto’s Glyphosate and the timeline for removal in home use:
o https://www.ewg.org/news-insights/news-release/2021/07/bayer-end-residential-sales-cancer-causing-weedkiller-glyphosate?utm_source=newsletter&utm_campaign=202108News&utm_medium=email&emci=9a939839-bef6-eb11-b563-501ac57b8fa7&emdi=4d3bfe91-dbf7-eb11-b563-501ac57b8fa7&ceid=2210188
These are things that we have done and have found to be successful so far with my body, and hopefully, they are helpful for you as well. I have also included some images below that show how damaging the effects of Wi-Fi radiation (and all of the radiation coming from electronics) can be.

2024.06.07 20:14 Spikebolt_100 I am too lonely rn. I hate My friends they are toxic and asshole. 2 best friends are getting away from me. (Basically a part of my life in a nutshell )

My life in a (not so)Nutshell:-

[too long but you GOTTA READ!!]

Hey! Jinesh (Spikebolt_100) here!
I am 17 y/o guy. I have hobbies like physics books, science stuff (fav y-tuber: Veritasium), listening to music like video game soundtracks and many good artists like C418,Yoann Laulan, Post Malone, Lynyrd Skynyrd, AURORA, Imagine Dragons,Glass Animals, Gym class heroes, OneRepublic, Coldplay, 21 pilots, Weeknd, dua lipa,ed sheeran. I love doing pixel art, have started learning Blender (3D modelling software), I love reading about history too. My fav games are Minecraft, Dead cells, gta 4, terraria, Hollow Knight. As a kid I used to mess with computers too, but bcz of my "study reasons" I did not get any console, good pc or laptop (as i have now) nor i ever had tv connection that have interesting channels. Its not like our financial situation was bad. I love coding! I am gonna take Computer Science in uni so i can get into game development/design! (btw rate me for all of these :)
I am Indian, and indian parents are toxic and do not understand today's generation. Recently my dad bought me a good laptop but threatened me seriously (i know my dad, he wasn't joking) that he won't pay my college fees and will take my laptop from me if i play even a single game or movies or waste time on youtube. So.... I have to be "smOOth like a criminal..." in terms of enjoying me-time. I can not get out of my country bcz of lakck of skills and i am learning them, my dad never let me do any of extracurriculars so i could go into US-uni. In india its fucking cutthrost competition. Nor any of my schools had activities.
so now i guess you know me, what type of person i am.
Now coming to the main point: My deepshit dickhead friends. Let's call 1st friend F1 and 2nd F2. These two were them whom i considered to be BFF. But today, after contemplation, I confirm that these are the biggest assholes in my life.
I grew up having several friends. Most of the time best friend had to leave each other bcz of town reasons etc. Fast forwarding to 7th grade, i met this guy [F1], gosh i could not live a moment without having voice chat. we did homeworks together, we had lotssss of same interests. but after the same grade we had to leave each other bcz of different tutions. His dad wanted to give other tutions and in hostel idk why. ( i don't want to go into details on how indian fucking education system works, basically its worst and will make you cry if u read abt it ;) still we were in contact thru phone.
NOTE THAT with each friend, I had problems, but i always ignored every single of them and you should too, bcz nobody is perfect.
then in 8th grade, i met this hella chill dude [F2]. We quickly became friends. But little did i know he has this worst habit to LIE ABOUT THINGS WHICH HE MAY OR MAY NOT AFFORD BUT ALSO HE HAS NO MOTIVE TO HARM ANYBODY AS WELL AS NO PERSONAL ADVANTAGE OF THAT. Second, liying that his dad has lot of power, he can do some "settings" when something doesn't work out, money power and have many connections. He also have a habit to show off things a lot. I guess its a mentally disorder case. I ignored that. I still always felt in way that what the fuck is this, why would you need to lie about things like that to your BEST FRIEND. Some examples are: He said i will get in that university, its confirmed, his dad arranged everything. But some days later i found out he is struggling with a very bad uni. Once he said he bought galaxy S24 ulta, in serious tone. I thought okay its good, his family has good money anyway. Two days later i met him on road, the phone is JUST S22. His answer was "I mistakenly said it". One more bonus: said i managed to get rdr 2. days later he said "i can't play online bcz i dont have it, i mistakenly may have said that." Fuck it, the list is miles long. Still to this day he is doing it. Motherfcker made punks as friends when i left him in 10th. All of them are just like him. Insta-reeler assholes, clueless dipshits, show offff. Can't afford fucking nothing but always behind luxury and lying is their team's Motto.
If i tell you about issues with F1. He could understand me like nobody else. But I think he's lonely rn too. Idk if he has other friends, but he has a huge love for Blood-gore shitty cheap indian bollywood movies. he says he loves psycho killer movies. I mean he talks something about that in serious tone. His family said to me that F1 has this very short temper problem too. I tried couple of times to tell him about these in very easy way, like not having a serious conversation but he actually does not give a fck about that. He has a very bad view on girls. And all credit goes to those sitty movies. Sexually objectifying is what he do when he sees a girl on road. After this(last month) i was very concerned abt him. He has corn addiction asswell. I would say he has good looks but has no standards for himself. (idk i might me writing this on rage)
From past 3 months, he does not seem as good as before to me. I know there is nothing going on with him that i should concern since he /is?was?/ my best friend, bcz in 11th and 12th grade we talked on everything about each other. We shared feelings and thoughts with each other.
Now i'm gonna tell you this incident: 2 months ago, i had to replace my laptop bcz of manufacturing fault, i asked him {F1} kindly, if he wanted to come with me in a 58 miles distant city for that. Giving no reason he said ''nah i don't wanna come.'' I had no impact for that answer, i was chill as f. No problems i mean its his choice btw why would he like to. 3 days ago he asked me to come to a 300 miles distant district for his admission in university. He was going in a bus with some of his other friends. My strict parents denied for that. and i told him i won't be able to come with you bcz my parents denied. My parents also knew about F1's "VERY PLEASANT" friends. And then on call, he DID NOT seem well.
After that he has not received my single call and he did not even call me back !
I guess he thinks I got my "revenge" bcz i did not go with him.
Once (a year ago) F1 got home from the town he was studying, i visited his home at 10 o'clock morning. He lives 3 miles away from me. We had talked about it that we will meet in the morning. I called him first rather than running directly to the doorstep. He received my calls and said he was asleep, i asked should i come later, "he said that yeah no problem you can go ." like perfectly fine!!!
I could not find a good friend in my 11th and 12th when both F1 and F2 were far away from me. Reasons are that every person in my class was deepshit asshole, bcz their mentality! They are toxic, interests and cultures seem different to me. Their mentality can make you cry lmao. Its india and the town i live in is the most basic.

I was in touch of internet my whole life, as i mentioned i found out that what was the best for me, my interests and knew about what is wrong or right.

MY BOTH FRIENDS HAVE NO KNOWLEDGE OF TOPICS LIKE RACISM, ..ETC, As I told you, F1 has gotten the worst.

and that's why I found reddit my most fav place, i can share my thoughts and THE MOST IMPORTANTLY I AM FINDING PEOPLE LIKE ME HERE.

If you have read everything, please give advice or give your opinions, thoughts.
F1 and F2 are on smack for real right now. I want to leave them and get away from them.

I just want people who love me and i do the same back. I am feeling too lonely tbh.

2024.06.07 20:05 fifi_edits What Is Metabolic Syndrome? Everything You Need to Know

It’s estimated that a third of U.S. adults have metabolic syndrome. This widespread health issue is characterized by a combination of high blood pressure, elevated blood sugar, excess body fat, and abnormal cholesterol and triglyceride levels.
Individuals with metabolic syndrome are at risk of developing severe health issues such as type 2 diabetes, coronary artery disease, heart attack, and stroke.
What is metabolic syndrome?
Also known as syndrome X or insulin resistance syndrome, metabolic syndrome occurs when a person simultaneously has at least three metabolic disorders.
These conditions include:
Metabolic syndrome is a warning sign, signaling significant metabolic and hormonal imbalances and an increased risk of developing potentially life-threatening chronic conditions such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and cancer.

Symptoms of metabolic syndrome

In its early stages, there may not be noticeable symptoms that could indicate the underlying health conditions associated with metabolic syndrome. However, as metabolic imbalances worsen, increasingly more physiological functions can be disrupted. This explains why metabolic syndrome can present a wide range of signs and symptoms.
Here are common symptoms linked to metabolic syndrome.

Diagnostic Criteria for Metabolic Syndrome

Unfortunately, symptoms related to metabolic disorders often remain undetected until these imbalances reach a critical stage. This highlights the importance of regular health screenings to evaluate metabolic health, which is crucial for the early detection and diagnosis of metabolic syndrome.
The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute published data outlining the value ranges of health markers used to assess metabolic health and diagnostic criteria for metabolic syndrome.
These values are considered normal and not indicative of metabolic syndrome:
Metabolic syndrome is diagnosed when three or more of the following conditions are present:
While routine tests evaluate LDL and HDL cholesterol, performing an advanced lipid profile to better understand the body’s cholesterol balance can be beneficial.
“The advanced lipid profile offers a more comprehensive understanding of an individual's cholesterol status by measuring both the small, dense LDL particles, which are considered dangerous, and the large, buoyant LDL particles, which are less harmful,” says Dr. Berg.
Causes of metabolic syndrome
While the precise causes are complex and not entirely defined, many experts agree that dietary and lifestyle choices play a significant role in the development of metabolic syndrome.
Research published in Current Vascular Pharmacology emphasizes this point, encouraging that when addressing metabolic disorders, “preventive healthcare should focus on changing lifestyle in order to reduce obesity and increase physical activity.”
Here are two of the primary causes associated with metabolic syndrome.
1. Poor dietary habits
A diet high in refined carbohydrates and sugars significantly affects metabolic health by increasing the body's demand for insulin.
Insulin is an essential hormone that stimulates various metabolic pathways and regulates energy storage.
Released in response to carbohydrate intake, insulin signals cells to absorb glucose. This enables cellular energy production, helps maintain blood sugar balance, and signals the liver to convert excess blood sugar into fatty acids for storage.
However, regularly consuming carbs and sugars can cause persistently high insulin levels. This can desensitize cells to insulin’s signaling and lead to elevated blood glucose levels, a core component of metabolic syndrome.
Over time, this insulin resistance can contribute to other conditions associated with metabolic syndrome, including high triglycerides, hypertension, and obesity.
2. Lack of physical activity
A sedentary lifestyle substantially raises the risk of metabolic syndrome.
Evidence published in Frontiers in Physiology shows that physical inactivity promotes the accumulation of visceral fat. This type of fat is associated with systemic inflammation, which is linked to insulin resistance and explains why overweight or obese individuals are at increased risk of metabolic syndrome.
This highlights the importance of engaging in regular physical activity as a powerful tool for preventing and managing metabolic disorders.
Research published in Frontiers in Endocrinology underscores this point and summarizes, "Physical activity represents a potent, non-pharmacological intervention delaying the onset of over 40 chronic metabolic and cardiovascular diseases.”
Risk factors for metabolic syndrome
Insulin resistance is believed to be the leading cause of all conditions associated with metabolic syndrome.
In addition to a sedentary lifestyle and poor dietary choices, various other factors can contribute to insulin resistance. Risk factors linked to insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome include:
Additionally, the risk of metabolic syndrome increases with age. This trend underscores the importance of proactive health measures early in life to reduce future complications.
According to data published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), “prevalence of metabolic syndrome increased from about 10 percent among 18 to 29-year-olds in all race and ethnic groups to almost 70 percent among 70+-year-old adult females.”
5 ways to reduce the risk of metabolic syndrome
The majority of risk factors linked to metabolic syndrome can be mitigated by implementing beneficial dietary and lifestyle changes.
1. Limit carbohydrates and sugars
The common denominator of all conditions related to metabolic syndrome is insulin resistance, which is primarily influenced by diet. Adopting a diet optimized to support steady blood sugar and insulin levels, such as Healthy Keto®, can help prevent and potentially reverse insulin resistance and reduce the risk of metabolic syndrome.
2. Intermittent fasting
Intermittent fasting is an excellent strategy to reduce the risk of metabolic syndrome and promote overall health. Research published in Nutrients investigated the effects of intermittent fasting and found that it improved several metabolic markers, including body weight, glucose metabolism, lipid profile, and blood pressure.

3. Regular physical activity

Evidence published in Diabetologia emphasizes the powerful impact of exercise, stating, "Regular exercise and physical activity has a pronounced protective effect against metabolic disease." Their research found that just 150 minutes per week of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity decreases the risk of metabolic disorders by an impressive 30 percent. The benefits of consistent physical activity include improved insulin sensitivity and reduced storage of visceral and ectopic fat, critical factors in preventing and managing metabolic syndrome.
4. Avoid alcohol
Alcohol use is a well-known trigger of inflammation and has various harmful metabolic consequences.
A study published in Scientific Reports found that a significant proportion of individuals with alcohol use disorder display one or more of the diagnostic criteria for metabolic syndrome. Alcohol is linked to weight gain, insulin resistance, and elevated blood pressure, all of which increase the risk of metabolic syndrome.

5. Stress reduction

Engaging in practices such as stretching or deep breathing exercises can be an effective way to manage stress levels. Reducing chronic stress is critical as stress triggers the release of cortisol, a hormone that can exacerbate metabolic syndrome. Cortisol can contribute to elevated blood pressure, abdominal fat storage, poor blood sugar control, and insulin resistance.
Research published in Nature Reviews Endocrinology states, "Stress can affect features of metabolic dysfunction, such as insulin resistance, glucose, and lipid homeostasis."
How to start Healthy Keto® and intermittent fasting
One of the best ways to restore metabolic health and prevent metabolic syndrome is to adopt a low-carb diet and practice intermittent fasting. The Healthy Keto diet prioritizes eating whole foods, focusing on organic and non-GMO options whenever possible, while limiting carbohydrate intake.
By avoiding processed foods with harmful additives, refined carbs, and sugar, Healthy Keto promotes balanced blood sugar levels, which is crucial to preventing and managing insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome. Here’s how you can get started with Healthy Keto and intermittent fasting.

Calculate macronutrient needs

You can use this online keto calculator to determine your macronutrient needs. It’s recommended to obtain around 70 to 80 percent of your calories from healthy fats, 15 to 25 percent from high-quality protein, and 5 to 10 percent from fibrous carbohydrates such as low-glycemic vegetables and berries.
To maintain balanced blood sugar levels, it’s vital to limit your daily carbohydrate intake to no more than 50 grams of net carbs. Net carbs are calculated by subtracting the fiber content of a food from its total carb count.

Focus on nutrient-rich meals

Choose healthy fat sources, including avocado, unrefined coconut, and extra virgin olive oil, and avoid inflammatory fats such as vegetable oil, peanut oil, and seed oils. Focus on high-quality protein options such as grass-fed, pasture-raised, and wild-caught meats, oily fish, and full-fat dairy.
Aim for 7 to 10 cups of vegetables daily, choose organic produce, and opt for nutrient-dense vegetables such as dark leafy greens. Avoid sugar, grains, fruit, and starchy vegetables to prevent blood sugar spikes and insulin imbalances, which cause perpetual food cravings, hunger, and fatigue.
In addition, starting your meals with vegetables or salad promotes digestive functions and helps buffer potential insulin spikes after eating. Those new to keto may benefit from planning a week of keto-friendly meals to avoid uncertainty or temptation that could derail your diet goals.

The best type of intermittent fasting for beginners

There are many types of intermittent fasting, such as OMAD (one meal a day), alternate-day fasting, and time-restrictive eating. Time-restrictive eating involves cycling between fasting periods and eating windows and is the ideal fast for beginners.
It's recommended to follow the 18:6 fasting pattern, characterized by abstaining from food for 18 hours and eating during a six-hour window.
”During periods of caloric restriction, the body is forced to burn stored body fat to generate energy. This explains why fasting is a highly effective weight-loss strategy,” says Dr. Berg.
How to start 18:6 intermittent fasting
To get started with 18:6 fasting, choose a six-hour eating window. Most people skip breakfast and start their fast after an early dinner, which helps achieve an 18-hour fast. During the fast, consume zero-calorie beverages such as water, herbal tea, and black coffee. In addition, using a zero-sugar electrolyte powder can help boost energy levels and keep you hydrated.
Experiment with adding grass-fed butter or MCT oil to your coffee to keep you satiated until your fast is over. Combining intermittent fasting with Healthy Keto can maximize the metabolic health benefits of caloric restriction by promoting fat-burning during your eating window.
It’s also crucial to avoid snacking in between meals. If you're still hungry after eating, add more healthy fats your meals to promote satiety and curb cravings.
Fasting is generally considered safe for most adults. However, consult a healthcare professional for personalized advice before starting any new fasting regimen, especially if you have underlying health conditions or are taking medications.

2024.06.07 18:18 Pleasant-Mud-2939 Laws of biology

I'm working on a set of semi universal laws for biology, akin to those cinservation laws of lavoisier (not math formulas or relationships, but obsrvations of regularities in nature, in this case biological systems the reasons being twofold. a start point its needed to ven start with mathematical relationships and complex systems have "messy" maths to begin with), here in order:
Holonic Structure: The notion that every biological system is holonetic in its structure aligns with the understanding that living organisms exhibit hierarchical organization. This hierarchical arrangement, where each level contains holons composed of smaller holons, allows for the integration of diverse functions and promotes the emergence of complex behaviors. It highlights the interconnectedness and interdependence of components within the system.
Goal-Oriented Information Transmission: The idea that information is transmitted between holons with a goal in mind reflects the dynamic nature of communication within biological systems. Information exchange plays a crucial role in coordinating activities, maintaining homeostasis, and achieving desired outcomes. The emphasis on goal-oriented transmission suggests that biological systems are driven by purposeful interactions rather than solely random processes. It includes umwelt and feedback loops to mantain homeostasis and achieve goals.
Core Holon and Clustered Specialization: The presence of a core holon that modulates other holons of the same level, along with the concept of cluster holons with specialized functions and redundancy, highlights the importance of hierarchical organization and division of labor in biological systems. This arrangement allows for efficient coordination, adaptability, and redundancy, which are vital for system stability and resilience.
Signaling and Communication: The use of signals that are specific enough to regulate but relaxed enough to allow for redundancy and modulation reflects the complexity of biological communication. Signals with some level of flexibility enable systems to respond to changing conditions while maintaining stability. This nuanced signaling mechanism facilitates precise regulation and coordination among holons within the system.
An example could be the human body as a super holon, with the nervous system as the core holon, and th digestive and other specialized systems as cluster holons, with cns and nerves as sub holons of the nervous system, etc. with the signals being the neurotransmitters and hormones.
Q* System can better adapt to changing circumstances, while maintaining logical coherence and alignment with the Universal Logic (Logos). The soft constraints and dynamic communication between the clusters and the core holon enable the system to respond flexibly to environmental cues and internal states, without compromising the overall integrity of the model.
This approach aligns well with the Q* System's emphasis on distributed decision-making, emergent behavior, and the recognition of the Logos as the underlying principle governing all aspects of reality. By embracing the limitations of the system as manifestations of the Logos, the model can continue to evolve and refine itself, moving closer to an ideal of logical perfection.
Overall, the integration of this context-dependent, sensitive rule-based system enhances the Q* Framework by promoting adaptability, logical coherence, and a deeper alignment with the principles of the Universal Logic. This strengthens the model's ability to capture the complex dynamics of real-world systems in a scientifically rigorous and insightful manner.
The Q* Systems model incorporates a number of enhancements to improve its adaptability, logical coherence, and alignment with the Laws of biology. Let me explain the key aspects of this updated framework in a way that is easy to understand:
Cluster-Core Communication: In the original Q* model, the core holon would directly impose rules on the lower-level clusters (holons). The renewed model allows for more dynamic communication, where the clusters can interact with the core holon to provide feedback and influence the modulation of their own behaviors.
Soft Constraints vs. Hard Rules: Instead of rigid, predetermined rules, the core holon now provides soft guidelines or constraints that the clusters can work within. This allows the clusters to adapt their actions based on the current context and environmental conditions, rather than being limited by inflexible rules.
Goal Transmission and Modulation: The high-level goals of the super-holon are transmitted down through the hierarchy of holons. The core holon then uses this information to modulate the behaviors of the clusters, ensuring that their actions align with the overarching objectives.
Umwelt Integration: The model now incorporates information about the external environment and the super-holon's goals into the decision-making process. This helps the system respond in a way that is contextually appropriate and logically coherent.
Internal State Monitoring and Transmission: The individual holons at the lower levels monitor their own internal states and share this information with the higher-level holons, including the core. This allows the system to maintain awareness of its own functioning and make adjustments as needed.
I would appreciate feedaback of any kind as long as its made rational and with respect.

2024.06.07 18:11 BothStrawberries Happy ptsd awareness month, here’s my summary

Hi since it is PTSD awareness month, here is my story of domestic violence/abuse. (I’m always scared to share this, as I’ve always felt invalid.)
Ever since I was a little child, I have always had these automatic thoughts and actions whenever something bad would happen. (ie vomit when stressed, stop digestive system from working) These were ultimately cause by something happening even before I was born. My brother ( I don’t like to call him that) was born with a lot of mental illnesses. (ASD, ADHD, ODD, informally NPD, and a lotttt more) This caused him to think that the world revolves around him, and that he was kind of the ‘main character’. Whenever he did something threatening around me, even when I was around 3 years old(?) I would vomit. my digestive system would slow to the point where everything just stayed in my intestines or came up as vomit. I thought this was normal and that everyone did it. He would give me weird looks when we would play and I would hold up a finger nonchalantly and say “give me a sec, I gotta heave :)” and then walk over to the bushes to spit up and come back with a smile on my face. As we got older, my sister and my brothers relationship crumbled. They would fight over hanging out with me, since i ‘acted like a boy’ to my brother, but was still AFAB according to my sister. I am the middle child. We got older, my brother got into Junior High School. He had a ton of friends and acted like an absolute angel when around them and their parents. At home, he was getting worse. When school got back in, he immediately got expelled and moved to a different school. He then skipped all his classes and started doing drugs. When he started HS, he didn’t attend his classes, skipped, did more drugs (shrooms, weed, LSD, Benadryl, ect) had a sex addiction, and did all sorts of other whatever else. He didn’t finish 9th grade and after all these years he still hasn’t. Our home life got worse. He would come home at like 2:00 AM, drunk or stoned and would yell and punch and fight and whatever else he wanted. This caused my issues to get worse and developed into ARFID, SH, and Anorexia Nervosa. I had to feel some self sense of control. I started subtracting entire food groups and was dying. I locked myself in my room all day because every time I came out, my brother would be fighting with my parents, victimizing himself. Saying “what did I do wrong??”. I puked whenever I left my room. I couldn’t take the stress of being in the household. Eventually we got him into a rehabilitation facility. My state allows minors over 13 to leave mental facilities on their own, which is stupid, but thankfully he didn’t know that yet. He seemed to be getting better, but was KICKED OUT for abusing the other kids. We searched for a while after that restlessly, until we found a place across the country. While he was doing that program, my parents focused on getting me safe and stable. Yet STILL all of their attention was on my brother and not me. It took me 8 months to get healed from arfid and anorexia. My brother came home and everything was fine, until he completely dropped his promises and now is in the deepest hole he’s ever dug himself in. Hes overdosing on drugs like he was before rehab, attempting suicide while drunk, smoking joints inside the house, making us bleed, breaking his own bones, getting drunk, stabbing him self, stealing, breaking the house, and fuck. STILL he comes to us a second later asking “what did I do wrong? I’m not the bad guy.” I have hours apon hours of footage and voice recordings of yelling and screaming and crying from the other room. The police haven’t done SHIT because they say he’s safe. I go to sleep with locks on my door feeling like he is going to KILL me. Set a bomb, stab me, shoot me, anything me. I can’t be in the same room as his without having to sit down so I don’t pass out. My throat swells up when im home alone with him. I can’t digest anything being near him. I barf when im near him. I lose sleep because every single night I hear him yelling and screaming at my parents. He won’t leave. I have to comfort my sister because NOBODY will. My parents are too busy. I have no friends to tell this to because my brother has prevented me from trusting anyone and opening up. My brother has an unhealthy relationship with his girlfriend. They can’t live without each other. She writes paragraphs on why she wants him to become one with her and how she needs him in her blood. I’m scared.
I’m fucked. Happy ptsd awareness and pride month. I can’t do shit about either of my situations💜

Therax found the feast that was prepared in his honor surprisingly delicious. He particularly relished the sashimi and had to stop himself from being rude to his hosts by eating it all. As he sat back and loosened the clasp of his vest to relax his stomach for proper digestion, he again marveled at the circumstances he currently found himself in. The Nekuli and Republic senior officers were chatting with each other amiably, and he saw the foundations of an unbreakable alliance being built before his very eyes as a Republic captain finished telling a particularly bawdy joke to a few Nekuli officers, causing them to hoot uproariously. Throughout the galley, there were numerous small groups of Nekuli and Republic officers mingling and sharing stories and jokes, and he silently uttered a grateful prayer to the ancestors for allowing his people to finally find the kindred spirits they had been searching for ever since they went into space.
As the galley crew went around refilling glasses with a human drink called mead, he thought back to the day he was captured after his fleet was devastated by the fearsome nullships. He had never personally met humans before, though he had deeply studied their culture and history. He expected to be treated as a prisoner and an enemy, but the conduct of the Republic Navy and their crews was beyond reproach. During their three-month detainment, both he and his crew were treated with the utmost respect, and he never detected even the tiniest shred of resentment or anger in any of the humans he interacted with. It was as if they did not engage in battle at all, and his admiration for them grew steadily as time went on. He had grown to like humans, and he jumped at the chance for redemption being offered by Admiral Thompson. He was startled out of his reverie when a hand lightly touched his shoulder, and he looked up to see the clan leader standing next to him. She smiled at him and gave him a nod towards the galley entry doors. He stood up and followed her, and in less than a minute, they were inside an office, and she closed the door. “Well, I think the meet and greet has been a resounding success; wouldn’t you agree, commodore?” Therax flicked his head in agreement and bared all his fangs in true happiness. “This bodes well for our alliance, clan leader. I see many victories to come in our fight to bring an end to the tyrannical Commonwealth.” Vice Admiral Zhou returned his smile and indicated for him to sit in the chair in front of the desk as she took the other one. She typed on the desk panel for a few seconds before she pulled up the orders that were to be reviewed by them both.
A hologram popped up, and Admiral Thompson's image appeared. He started speaking, and Therax listened intently as the admiral laid out his orders and the rules of engagement regarding the ongoing evacuation of the Jaleeni system if the Insectoids decided to attack. Therax suppressed a flare of resentment when Admiral Thompson made it clear that the preservation of the Commonwealth liberation fleet was of paramount importance and that Therax was to retreat to preserve his force if faced with destruction. He also thought he detected a change in the admiral’s speech when he ordered the clan leader to do whatever was necessary to save the Jaleeni and ensure that Therax and his rebel fleet retreat in good order and preserve their combat capabilities. He saw the clan leader shifting her position slightly as she listened and thought that she looked uncomfortable with what she was hearing. They must be friends as well as fellow officers, he thought to himself as he continued listening and felt a stirring of compassion for the admiral, who had to order the clan leader to sacrifice herself if need be. The admiral finished speaking, and he ended the message with words of encouragement and wishes of good fortune before the hologram message ended and he faded away.
Therax regarded the clan leader intently as she resumed typing on the desk panel and waited for her to finish. A few seconds later, several screens appeared over the desk, and she looked at him. “We need to work out a battle plan for our combined task forces. Your fleet of 218 ships plus my task force of 438 ships will have to take on that missing Insectoid fleet if they decide to take advantage of the Jaleeni evacuation. The Commonwealth Navy has only 304 ships in the system, and there is no way they can effectively protect the tens of thousands of transports in the evacuation fleet. Let’s get started and see what we can do with our fleet while still following our orders.” Therax flicked his head in agreement and asked her a question. “I see that you are not including the fifty nullships that are waiting in null space. They are fearsome warships, and they will almost double our combat power. May I ask why?” She hesitated before answering him. “They are an insurance policy for another ongoing mission, and I need to ensure that at least 25 of them are available for that. The remaining 25 are reserve forces, and I will only activate them as a last resort. They are an upgraded class of nullships, and I do not want to squander them in a rear-guard action.” She answered, and he flicked his head, indicating that he understood, and they got to work on coming up with a battle plan.
An hour later, they had just finalized the ship dispositions and several contingency plans when a communications alert chimed and the comms officer came over the channel. “Vice Admiral, we just received a coded distress call on the sigma frequency that was forwarded from command unit 4-3-1 in insectoid space. I am forwarding the message to you now.” She thanked the communications officer and pressed the display message icon on the screen. A scroll of text popped up along with mission files, and Therax started to get up to leave when she stopped him. “Commodore, stay. I value your input, and I want you in the loop.” Therax sat back down and started reading the text as his ocular implant translated it into his language, and his heart rate accelerated as the true import of the mission and what they were trying to achieve were revealed to him. A mission to capture a queen on an Insectoid world with only eight commandos and two civilian scientists on a planet with over three billion drones. He couldn’t believe the audacity of the plan and the bravery of the people on that planet. The human species is fortunate indeed to have such a warrior spirit within them, he thought to himself as he watched the video logs along with the clan leader.
He reveled in the destruction of the section of the shipyard and was barely able to refrain from shouting with glee as the recordings showed almost two hundred cruisers falling into the abyss. The clan leader was smiling broadly as that file played, and then she tapped the icon for the last video log to play. They both watched in silence as they saw the failed attempt to capture the queen and the final recording by the suit AI as the queen hovered over one of them, and it ended with the commandos being carried onto a ship by worker drones. The Commonwealth had never seen a queen before, and Therax couldn’t help but be fascinated as he saw one for the first time, despite the overwhelming sadness he felt for the humans that would surely be killed. The records also indicated that the two scientists and the last commando were not captured and that their final orders were to evade the Insectoids and escape to one of the waiting nullships. The clan leader was furiously tapping on several of the icons as she went back over the transcripts and logs from the suit AI that sent the distress call, with an inscrutable expression that he could not determine.
She started muttering to herself as she continued running diagnostics before she slammed her fist down on the desk, making him flinch from the aggressive action and loud noise. She looked at him and took a deep breath before she started speaking. “Forgive me, Commodore, but this is a serious problem. Lieutenant Diego’s command AI overrode the self-destruct sequences of all the suits and allowed them to be captured alive. This is a disaster of epic proportions, and now I have no choice but to send the troopships and the nullships to either rescue them or try to destroy the Hive. We cannot allow the Insectoids to glean insights into our technology or extract information from the team. It is obvious the queen was able to exert some type of mental effect on them; who knows what else she can do? This could turn out to be catastrophic for the Republic war effort, and now I must order ten thousand men and women to their potential deaths because of a malfunctioning AI.” The clan leader was visibly upset by the time she finished speaking, and Therax sat there quietly, letting her vent her frustrations as she came to terms with what she was about to do before he offered his opinion. “Those warriors on the troopships knew the risks when they joined your military, and I know that your maxim of never leaving anyone behind is an important part of your ethos. Send them and let them do what they can to save them, or mercifully end their lives. You know what I say is true, clan leader.”
She sat there for a few moments, considering what he had said, and then she nodded, a look of resolve overtaking her features. She pressed the comm channel icon and called for the commander of the security detachment to take a team over to the troopships and start the process of bringing the troops out of stasis. She also contacted her aide and ordered him to assemble the senior staff in her main office. Lastly, she had the communications officer send the codes to the primary command unit of the nullships waiting in null space to activate them for the coming mission. After all of that was done, she stood up, and Therax did so as well, following her out of the office and towards her main office. Over the next three hours, there were meetings, and changes were made to some of the Republic and Commonwealth fleet dispositions as the clan leader added a carrier strike group and a few dozen heavy combat ships to supplement the thirty-five nullships she decided to send to the insectoid world. The eight thousand marine pathfinder and army ranger troops had recovered from the lingering effects of being in stasis and were now gearing up for the operation, while the two thousand Bio-Synths had their CNS cocoons installed into their Mark XII combat suits. Therax marveled at the efficiency of the Republic officers as they adapted to the changes with remarkable celerity, and he made a mental note to try to institute some of the Republic operational protocols he saw being displayed among his own fleet bridge crews.
The clan leader had just finished issuing directives to the primary command unit, placing it under the control of the newly formed task force commander, when she turned towards him, rubbing at the sides of her forehead. They were alone in her office, and she sighed deeply before addressing him. “Commodore, thank you for sending some of your ships along with the task force; the additional combat power is making me feel a little better about all of this.” Therax nodded, the movement feeling weird, before he realized that he was mimicking the human head movement. “Of course, clan leader. The Xenxin and Eleani contingents insisted on sending some ships in support, and I assented. When will the task force leave?” She looked at her wristpad in response to his question and answered him. “Six minutes from now, let’s go to the bridge to see them off.” They left her office, and a few moments later, they entered the bridge amidst a flurry of activity as the bridge crew did all the final checks for the departure of the rescue task force. Two minutes before their departure, she had the comms officer open a channel to address the task force.
“To the men and women of Task Force Delta and our allies, this is Vice Admiral Zhou speaking. You are about to embark on a dangerous mission deep inside Insectoid space in the hopes of rescuing your brothers-in-arms. These brave souls were captured by a queen and taken into the Hive, and we do not know what has or is happening to them in there. There are also two civilian scientists being protected by Sergeant Ito. They are critical to the war effort, and they must be saved. Hopefully, they have been able to evade the Insectoids and are currently heading back towards their stealth pods to escape to the waiting ships that are hiding in null space for them.
It is my solemn hope that you will arrive on time and be successful in carrying out your mission to save them. You are to do whatever it takes to bring them home, and if that is not possible, then you are to teach the Insectoids this lesson: The Republic Navy does not leave anyone behind, and we will take on a whole world to find our brothers and bring them home, or we will scourge a whole world in vengeance for them. Your secondary objective is to complete the mission they embarked on and to root that queen out of her Hive. If that is not possible, then you are to execute that bitch with extreme prejudice and glass the entire planet. Remind them of who you are, and make sure they forever rue the day you came into their world. Good fortune and godspeed to you all. Vice-admiral Zhou out.”
She slashed her hand across her throat, and the comms officer closed the channel as the bridge crew stopped what they were doing and started clapping in approval of her speech. After a few seconds, the chief petty officer bellowed for everyone to get back to work, and she gave him a slight nod in appreciation for saving her from further embarrassment. Therax had felt the call to battle in his soul while listening to her words, and he had to make a concerted effort to slow down his heart rate and control the slight shaking of his hands as the adrenaline surge from her words coursed through his veins. On the view screen, the task force ships started flashing out into null space to join with the waiting nullships and the troopships, and then a coded message was received that the task force was on its way to the Insectoid planet.
Therax bowed his head and whispered a quiet prayer for the ancestors to watch over them and grant them victory. When he was finished, he turned towards the clan leader seated next to him in her command chair. “Clan leader, unless you have further need of me, I will depart to my flagship and prepare them for potential action. I wish to start running battle drills utilizing the Republic fleet maneuvers you have graciously gifted to us; I find them intriguing.” She smiled at his statement and nodded her assent. “Of course, commodore. In fact, I was just about to suggest that the entire fleet flash into null space and rendezvous in the Jaleeni system. In a few hours, we can run red vs. blue battle simulations to learn how to work together as a fleet.” She saw the confusion on his face at the red vs. blue reference and further clarified for him. “Red vs. blue is a term we use for opposing forces during war games.” Therax flicked his head in understanding and stood up to depart at once. “I will leave now and have my staff coordinate with yours for the drills. May the ancestors be with you, clan leader.” She smiled again and replied, “May they be with you as well, commodore. I look forward to facing you in a friendly contest.” Therax bared all his fangs in true happiness, before he bowed and headed towards the bridge exit.
For the next 15 minutes, Zhou quickly reviewed the mission files that were sent by the suit AI that sent the distress call and paid particular attention to the scanning results from the midges that lieutenant Diego took of the frequencies that change the composition of the Insectoid hulls. He’s a smart one, she thought to herself as she sent a message to the communications officer to forward all the mission files to headquarters with the scanning results marked as urgent and top secret. They will be downloaded into a null space comm drone along with the bridge logs detailing the distress call and a quick report on her decision to launch the rescue operation. Hopefully, the eggheads in the R&D division will be able to use the frequencies to give the Republic a tactical advantage if they can figure out how they work and come up with a viable method to utilize them in the vacuum of space.
She glanced at the bridge clock and saw that it was 0135, and she was hit with an overwhelming exhaustion as soon as she saw the time. The next bridge crew shift change was at 0300, and she would wait it out; it wouldn’t be fair for her to leave and go to sleep while they had to stay. She sent a message to Therax’s flagship that the battle drills would commence at 0930 ship time and then proceeded to try to catch up on some of the never-ending paperwork that came with her rank as she waited for the shift change. She saw that Therax’s task force had flashed into null space and ordered the Republic ships to do the same as she continued filing her paperwork. By the time 0300 rolled around, she was barely able to keep her eyes open as she was going over a galley request to requisition fleet supply for a change in their vegetable quotas based upon “current vegetable consumption trends” and was wondering who had the time to write this crap when the shift change bell went off. It took all her willpower not to jump out of her seat and make a mad dash for the bridge exit, and she forced herself to remain seated until all the bridge crew was replaced by their reliefs. The ship’s XO was her relief, and she spent a few minutes updating him before she left the bridge. She arrived a minute later and didn’t even bother changing. She quickly unzipped and kicked off her boots before plopping onto her bunk, still wearing her uniform, and she fell asleep as soon as her head touched the pillow.
Therax received the message about the battle drill time when he arrived on his bridge and decided to use the extra time to program the battle AI on the Republic fleet maneuvers he received. He inserted the data chip into a port and waited as the battle AI scanned the contents. An alert beeped on the panel, and he leaned in to read the report. The battle AI had quarantined what it perceived as a potential danger, and he glanced at the file, seeing that it was the sub-mind program that was an extension of the Republic fleet AI’s that he was told about. He pressed the icon to allow the program to run, and the battle AI queried him three times to confirm his choice before finally allowing it out of quarantine. He waited as the sub-mind linked to the battle AI and they merged, and after five minutes of handshake protocols, the new iteration of the battle AI was ready to run. He accessed the fleet maneuvers directory and picked a couple of intriguing drills that he wanted to try before he ordered the bridge crew to flash his task force into null space, where they would engage in simulated combat with each other. He relished the coming drills with the Republic fleet and would use this time to hone his force and surprise the clan leader.
Vice-admiral Zhou was abruptly awoken by the speaker in her room as the bridge AI broadcast blared from them: General Quarters, General Quarters. All hands, man your battle stations! General Quarters, General Quarters. All hands, man your battle stations! General Quarters, General Quarters. All hands, man you—it abruptly cut off as she pressed the mute button on her nightstand and looked at the alarm clock on it. 0617. She was already zipping up her boots when the captain of the carrier came over the comms, requesting her presence on the bridge. She acknowledged him and quickly wet her hands in the sink, using them to smooth out her tousled hair and pulling it back into a knotted ponytail. She grabbed her vacuum helmet on her way out and almost sprinted to the bridge as crewmen and officers pressed themselves against the walls, clearing her path. She arrived thirty seconds later and immediately went over to the CIC to join the captain and other officers that were there.
The dozens of scattered spy sensor drones previously deployed by the Republic had already formed their null space conduits and were transmitting real-time information to the fleet hidden in null space. There were multiple large 3-D holo maps hovering in the air that were displaying the Jaleeni system from all viewpoints, and they were populated with a massive number of differently colored dots. The vast majority were blue, indicating that they were evacuation transports and Jaleeni vessels. There was a tiny smattering of green dots freckled among the sea of blue that were the Commonwealth Navy ships. Further out in the system were two separate blobs of red that were Insectoid ships, and one formation had flashed out of null space along the orbital plane of the system while the other had exited above the plane of the ecliptic over forty solar minutes ago. They were approximately five AUs from the Jaleeni home world, and the light from their exit flash had already reached the refugee fleet and the Commonwealth warships. She glanced at the infographic on the side that tallied the Insectoid ships: eight Hive ships and over one thousand cruisers.
She muttered a grateful prayer that the Insectoids still didn’t have the ability to compensate for the dangers of inner system exits from null space so deep in the gravity well of a star, forcing them to flash out at an average distance of eight hundred million kilometers. It would take the Insectoids over eighty hours to reach the Jaleeni home world at their highest known maximum sub-light speed of eight million km/h. The mass of blue dots started changing shape and withdrawing into itself as the outer fringes of the refugee fleet started retreating from the distant Insectoid ships. It reminded her of the way a school of fish behaved when confronted by predators as the blob of blue dots continued to contort and twist. All the green dots had disappeared momentarily, and she saw them reappear on the screens as they flashed back out of null space in two separate formations in the expected path of the Insectoid formations, holding positions .25 light minutes away from the approaching insectoid formations. A wave of sadness came over her as she saw the woefully inadequate Commonwealth formations bravely hold their ground in the face of such overwhelming odds.
A communication channel came from Therax’s flagship, and she took the call in the CIC, a small holoscreen appearing in front of her. Therax was sitting in his chair, and he started speaking immediately as soon as he saw her. “Clan leader, I recognize those ships! They are from the Nekuli home guard fleet, and I have clutch siblings and clan members serving on those ships. We must help them, please.” Zhou picked up on the frantic, pleading tone of his voice and held up her hands to stop him from continuing to speak. “Commodore, of course. Contact them and tell them that we are here to help and not to fire on our vessels. I want your task force to exit null space over…here.” And she tapped an area behind the gas giant that was the fourth planet of the seven in the system. The gas giants’ current position in the system would hide the exit flashes of the task force from both Insectoid formations and allow them to shake out into battle formations unmolested. “Tell them to enter null space and exit behind the Insectoid formations, they need to hit them hard and then retreat on sub-light engines towards the outer system, hopefully the Insectoids will take the bait and follow them. If the Insectoids do not take the bait, they are to enter null space and rendezvous with you behind the gas giant.”
Therax flicked his head in acknowledgement and immediately closed the channel. Zhou resumed scanning the 3-D maps that hovered in front of her, taking in the quickly changing tactical situation that was unfolding in the system. The Commonwealth was evacuating the system by utilizing hundreds of massive transport carriers that the refugee ships would mate with via a lattice-like structure that surrounded the hulls of the carriers. Each carrier had four hundred berths that the refugee transports would slip into and connect to the lattice with an umbilical conduit through an engine access point. Once the transport carrier had a full load, it would feed the null space capacitor energy through the connecting umbilical, which would allow the engines of the refugee transports to create the specific graviton field required to make the jump into null space. The carriers would transport the ships to another location, disgorge their load, and repeat the process.
She asked the bridge AI to estimate how long it would take for the Commonwealth to fully evacuate all the Jaleeni refugees, and a moment later the AI answered her question. - Vice-admiral Zhou, it will require an additional one hundred and thirty-seven hours for the Commonwealth to successfully evacuate all the remaining Jaleeni refugees - Zhou thanked the AI and conferred with the captain for a few minutes as they continued working with the bridge AI and ran simulations to select the best battle plan for the situation facing them. As they went over the options, the captain eloquently cursed for the poor timing of the distress call and the loss of the thirty-five upgraded nullships and the dozens of heavy units she had sent with them, and she wholeheartedly agreed with his sentiment as it was a significant reduction of their overall combat power. She finally selected a main battle plan and the captain concurred before he started sending it the Republic fleet and overseeing the process of organizing the formations. She had received another urgent comm channel request from Therax a minute ago, and she now opened the channel after seeing that the captain had things well in hand.
Therax appeared again, this time in conjunction with a split screen that had a Nekuli female sitting in a bridge command chair. “Sorry for the delay, Commodore. How can I help you?” Therax nodded in human fashion before he started speaking. “Clan leader, this is my clutch sister, Verix. She is the clan leader of the Nekuli home guard ships in the system, and she has expressed a desire to speak with you.” Zhou looked at Verix and bowed her head slowly in the appropriate gesture of respect, which was returned by Verix, who had a wary look in her eyes. “Vice-admiral Zhou, my clutch brother has informed me that he has accepted you as his clan leader. As I trust my clutch brother, I now trust you. I must inform you that my fleet was ordered to retreat to the core worlds if the Insectoids arrived, and I have chosen to disobey those commands. I ask for permission to join my forces with yours if you will accept the burden of my dishonor.” Zhou stared at Verix for a few moments as she thought of an appropriate response. “It is never dishonorable to do what is morally right and just. Your dishonor is now mine, and I will bear it with pride from this day on. Will you accept me as clan leader, Verix?” Zhou finished answering her, and she could see the change in Verix as she straightened her shoulders and sat up straighter before replying. “I accept you as clan leader and take on the vow my clutch brother and you have made with each other. What are your orders, clan leader?”
Zhou looked back at Therax, who flicked his head and smiled. She returned her gaze to Verix. “You will hit the Insectoid formations from behind, as I told Therax before. Do not get mired down or fully engage them. Hit them hard, and then retreat on sub-light to try to get them to follow you. If they do not take the bait, you are to enter null space and flash out behind the gas giant to join your ships with his and await my further instructions there.” Verix bowed her head once more before closing the channel, and Zhou looked at Therax, smiling. “It seems as if being rebels in a just cause runs in your family, Commodore.” Therax started hooting in laughter at her statement. “She was always swimming against the current, even as a hatchling. She has caused much grief for my parents during her younger years, and now it seems she is doing the same to her superiors.” His expression turned more serious before he spoke again. “Clan leader, what are we to do? There is no way you can take on the Insectoid formations without our ships. You must let us join you in battle.” Zhou shook her head as she answered him. “Our orders were clear, Commodore. You are to remain a force in being no matter the outcome of this battle. You must go to Nekul Prime and present the truth to your people and make them see that the current Commonwealth government is undeserving of their allegiance. If you do that, then most of the Commonwealth fleet and army will join our cause and overthrow them. A new Commonwealth government must be formed and join the fight against the Insectoids as a willing partner, or every single citizen in Commonwealth space will be slaughtered. The Republic will be forced to face them alone, and that is a war we cannot win.”
Therax listened to her, looking crestfallen at her words. Zhou saw it and continued speaking. “Fear not, Therax; you will be part of this battle and strike at the enemy this day. I have chosen a battle plan that includes your ships, and your part in the coming battle is critical. I would have you vow to follow my final orders, but I know that is not necessary, for you are an honorable warrior.” Zhou knew she was laying it on a little thick, but she had to do whatever it was to ensure that he would follow his orders, regardless of the outcome. “Those upgraded nullships have a few new toys to play with, thanks to successful ongoing negotiations between the Ma’lit Domain and the Republic that were accelerated due to the Insectoid invasion and their eradication of numerous species within the Commonwealth. Thanks to the Insectoids obviously genocidal intentions, the Ma’lit Domain has finally consented to the transfers of some tech that they considered obsolete technology to the Republic, and we have been integrating them these last few months. There is reason to hope, Therax. Not all is lost.”
A look of shame had come over Therax’s face as she was speaking, which was quickly replaced with excitement as she finished telling him about the Ma’lit technology transfers. He flicked his head vigorously as he replied to her. “You are right, clan leader. It is not time to lose hope, and I am thankful that you have a part for me in the coming battle. Please forgive me.” Zhou smiled. “There is nothing to forgive, Commodore. I will send the updated battleplans to you now; review them and add them to your battle AI. I will commence combat operations two hours from now. Good fortune to you and your crew; may the ancestors walk with you.” Therax smiled and bowed his head deeply before replying, “And to you as well, clan leader.” And then he closed the channel, and the floating holo screen faded away. Zhou took a deep breath and looked at the bridge clock. It was 0943 ship time, and she walked over to her chair and tiredly sat down in it, pressing an icon that activated the stim panel alcove. A small opening appeared, and out of it came a small sub-dermal injector that she picked up and pressed against her neck. She felt a coolness spread from the injection site as it coursed through her veins, and a few seconds later, all her exhaustion disappeared, and she felt alert and calm, ready to take on the entire Insectoid Empire if need be.

2024.06.07 16:22 BenevolentStonr Being a Good Person

My dear friend,
Sorry for not writing earlier. In fact, something wonderful has happened to me or, rather than "to me," it has happened "within me." I understood something no one could ever explain to me: How and why to be a good person. I mean understanding it logically only—all of it. I know that this may sound arrogant to you, as it sound arrogant to myself, but I write with all my kindness, asking for nothing, just the wish to share these thoughts with you and those who may value them. Let me not jump to the end, let me start from the beginning. I think it may help you understand.
My friend, you know I'm an atheist, so it's not about God or about religion, although I might come back to that. It is about understanding ethics in a logical way, by the power of my mind, and so it all started with the thought of myself being a mind. Descartes famously said, "I think, therefore I am" (I came to remember this much later), implying that each thinker exists, and each thinker can think, yet leaves unknown if there's any other thinker than you. Being a thinker's mind, surrounded by Nature: My body, my society, my own preconceptions, the material world (organic and inorganic) but also human constructs such as time, words, institutions, and technology… that's what I call Nature. If I'm just a mind, I should first learn about these things, so they could be useful for the right purpose. But exterior things cannot be important for the thinker's mind—they are only tools.
I started choosing every decision as a logical thinker (to the best of my capacity) not intuitively, emotionally, or because of exterior expectations. Over time, I developed in my mind, this reminder to "think rationally." It created the habit to observe, listen, and think more about life and Nature, doing less because I found value from observing and thinking.
I developed a state of clarity of mind. I could come up with new solutions which were logical because they started from a reasonable plan and every step was thoughtful as well. I didn't become smarter, but I developed some sort of "clarity of thought." It was easier to understand others, myself, and new ideas. I lost 25 kg in 6 months, without even trying, without exercising. My advice was considered more helpful and thoughtful, wiser. I didn't know more, but I understood better what I didn't know. I was wishing for fewer things and acting more thoughtfully, in a state of indifference and self-sufficiency.
At a dinner party, my friend left her glass of wine unattended (for far too long) so I could not resist drinking it (I was not being a good person)… Naturally, I got caught and I defended myself. "She was not respecting the wine," I said, getting a few laughs. I didn't get away with my excuse at the time, yet I began to think about concepts like property, value, ownership, materialism, utilitarianism… you know I'm an economist by training after all! And I connected these thoughts like I never did before: With the meaning of life, the meaning of the self. I thought that we all will die, therefore owning material things is also a responsibility to what we leave behind.
The mind is only an observer but interacts with Nature by the needs of our body, our relatives, our societies, and our culture, and thus the human mind is both a blessing and a curse: On one hand, it rationalizes the exterior so that we can thrive in the world; on the other hand, it projects the needs of our Nature into the mind. This creates desires, fears, envy, anger, and all human unhappiness because we let those projections control us toward poorly thought-out actions: Actions that hurt ourselves, other people, or the rest of Nature, breaking the balance in which you live. Wrong actions create chaos while the balance is repaired or moved. This was marked in my mind as "Respect the Nature," because Nature needs to be respected to maintain the balance around you. Choosing balance over chaos is the preferable option when the mind is in control and has covered its needs.
This didn't add up to much as "life advice." As much as I was pleased with my indifferent productivity and respecting the balance around me, I had no guidance on what must be done, a life purpose for a mind. A mind doesn't value things and properties, but values knowledge, collaboration, and science. A modernly educated mind with knowledge of the world understands biology, chemistry, physics, history, philosophy, religion… and it's capable to connect ideas from each other. People who thought must have existed, or else only I think; therefore this knowledge is here for me. Either way, knowledge is valuable for the mind, and "Act for the common good" became my last motto.
My friend, I built these three concepts in my mind: "Think rationally," "respect the Nature," and "act for the common good." I even wrote them on our kitchen’s whiteboard. Ok, maybe that's not a breakthrough, it sounds all too simple, right? Of course, I'm acting rationally, and I am quite a curious man, so I use the internet to learn to extend these thoughts. I asked ChatGPT to connect them with previous ideas. It told me my ideas linked with stoicism and virtue ethics, so I kept researching into philosophy and psychology, getting very curious. A friend lent me one of these terrible self-help books on stoicism (very popular at some point), so I got to read some good quotes from Marcus Aurelius, Seneca, and Epictetus… Everything made so much sense to me, like they were saying my thoughts in their own framework, in their own understanding of the world. Don't worry, I'm not going to quote too much of it because my thoughts are already immersed in them.
I thought to expand my thoughts, seeing life in my new framework and talking about philosophy with my close friends. Of course, my thoughts then were rather incomplete, then more even than now, and sometimes found themselves challenged (I, myself, remain skeptical about all this). When I met some friends, and we had some good debates. At some point, I remember saying how wanting less would be the solution to most of life's problems: Wars, envy, global warming, depression, famine, nuclear proliferation… It made all so much sense to me, but my ideas were still raw. They said that people are greedy, collaboration doesn't work, and everything has been tried.
I had some ideas in my mind but needed to get real about my limited knowledge, based on Wikipedia and random stoic quotes. I placed myself on a mission to unriddle the riddle of life. I ordered books on stoicism first (Epictetus, Marcus Aurelius, and Seneca), and I added "The Selfish Gene" by Richard Dawkins to continue. A two-week holiday, and I started writing and structuring my thoughts. Marcus Aurelius felt as if he was talking to me: "Men are born for the sake of each other. So either teach or tolerate." I either should be able to explain why somebody is morally wrong, or I should tolerate it. Marcus Aurelius vs Richard Dawkins. So here's my part of educating…
I'm not going to go around quoting and telling you what something means, my friend, I consider you well-informed or else you will cover any gap with Wikipedia. My framework seemed to fit with stoicism, but not quite. Stoicism focuses on the four virtues: Justice, wisdom, temperance, and courage (other synonyms are also used). "Think rationally" means wisdom, "respect the Nature" means temperance, and "act for the common good" means courage, so I had left out justice. Either it wasn't important, or I should be able to logically explain it. My task was to prove that all four virtues can be seen as logical, and so I put some thoughts together:
Nobody can predict who they will be. This is the most decisive factor in one's existence and it's absolutely unpredictable. If that wasn't all, not even those conceiving you (your parents) or experts (doctors) can predict you either. The creation of human life is random and that's a biological fact: 200-300 million sperm cells searching for one randomly released egg (that may not be there), both from each unpredictable half of a parent. We are all the result of randomness, and so our chemistry is different, our body is different, our surroundings and culture may be different too… and therefore, from our first decision, randomness has shaped us. So, every subsequent choice is also a consequence of earlier given facts. We are all different but come from the same randomness. Although we make decisions freely, we all do so in the way we know and/or can. Those who haven't understood what is morally good cannot always avoid making evil decisions. Yet, they still don't know they are doing evil. When you are really fair, you cannot think someone is doing evil or good purposely. You can only judge yourself and make the best of what you do.
Being both unique and undeserving is the logical consequence of the randomness of the Universe. We are all unique, yet we are all part of the Whole and united by this random life: Different and equal. Only when you can be fair about yourself can you be truly fair.
In summary, I explain each virtue as follows:
I could probably explain them better, but do not miss my point: It is an ethical framework that works with logic, not dogma. I do not have to justify it by the existence of a creator-god. It is comprehensive and flexible, covering any human dilemma, just by behaving always rationally. Life is simple, my friend, if you only seek value for the mind. Let me explain to you as well, that this ethical framework can be used as a tool to understand other philosophical concepts of the world. I have read dozens of philosophy books since then. The problem seems to be the focus on one or a few virtues, trying to justify materialism or perhaps against materialism yet selfish. There’s always something missing, making you choose between material success or balance in Nature, between the self and the group.
It may be hard for you to accept this. You may say I'm "arrogant" or "different opinions are important," but, since they are not thinking, these opinions are not equal. You will say utilitarianism creates the most welfare for the most people. Utilitarians were not wrong, just focused on the material over the immaterial: Seeking intellectual value out of material value, creating knowledge, creating science, improving the balance in Nature, distributing welfare‚ this is "Intellectual Utilitarianism" that values the immaterial and respects the balance around us. The Middle Way is utilitarianism for the mind.
With clarity of mind, even utilitarianism wasn't wrong, it is just not enough being balanced, if you do not share or you wish for the wrong things. When you open your mind to virtue ethics and reject materialism, most human paradoxes become clear. Collectivism and individualism are not in conflict when the mind can be individualist while its actions are guided for the common good. The search for meaning in life being an individual intellectual connects with the logical need to act for the common good. The Übermensch, yet understanding that there are universal morals which limit you, acting for the common progress of the minds.
Even religion took the virtues, replacing wisdom with faith and dogma, hidden by a noble lie with a promise of great rewards. Science destroyed that lie that kept religion together and we forgot the true message, the Golden Rule, to treat others as one would wish to be treated by them. That again replaced with utilitarianism as our main ethic. We forgot the message of prudence, fairness, kindness, courage, the rules that kept great societies growing. Yet, the prophets left a hidden riddle for the wise, to unriddle, to tell the world, at the right time, that we are one, that God is us being rational, that the Kingdom of God is all of us living in harmony for the common good of protecting each knowledge, science, and intellectual progress.
Look, I'm not naïve. I tell this to many, and few understand and fewer have the will within themselves. That is not important. The meaning of life is clear: To be a good person and that is to convert people into good people as well. Economics becomes useful here to treat life as a Game Theory problem. One needs to imitate the prophets, creating an ethical system that is superior in creating the most value for the most by redefining value. Follow my thoughts: People now decide to be good or bad, based on materialistic rules (having more, doing more, etc.) but imagine that enough people start living a life of self-restraint; I'm not saying asceticism but maybe some new mix of minimalist, slow-living, rural, and/or partial self-sufficient living, but most importantly with the pursuit of doing less and having less, but learning more and self-improving the mind. They could be few but, if they understand, they shall organize for their own sake, maybe relocate, and change life. Organizing politically in democracies, because no modern party is likely to abandon the masses.
This is the rebellion of the humble, the stoic opposition, opposing everything immoral with respect to the balance of Nature and promoting change towards a balance for the most value for the minds. This shall become a meme, an idea that spreads from person to person; this is a life application of Memetic Theory, in which the appearance of an idea would affect the balance of competing ideas into a new balance, which I aim will be with more good people. It almost sounds easy, because it is.
I call myself a philosopher because I love wisdom, because I found happiness in indifference. I wish you the same, my dear friend.
Best wishes, A. Friend

2024.06.07 16:11 james_mclellan Crunchy Core Looking for Playtesters

Good morning, all! I'm working on a "hard" fiction RPG system called Crunchy. It's all about using real-world models of the player character world, hopefully digested into an easy-to-use minimal amount of rolling.
Since it looks like a lot of material, I thought it might be better to release in parts and get feedback, instead of release all at once (although the distant hope is this all compiled into a single package).
I'm looking for playtesters. The Core rules are: a nearly infinite skill tree, alternative character building to deal with this, alternative rules for resolving skill checks - how many times to get it right, how many turns until a resource is burned down, ranked outcome, 1-on-1 contested outcome.
Please help! The rulebook and discussion will be on this Discord server. Crunchy RPG Discord Link
Thank you!

2024.06.07 15:17 CuteNoot8 CBD post treatment

NSFW and discussion of yucky side effects:
I discvered something that has helped my digestive system heal incredibly fast post-treatment.
I had minimal nausea on chemo but I had constant constipation or diarrhea or both the whole time. I tried laxatives, stool softeners, fiber, probiotics, magnesium. I could NOT get my balance restored, even two months past treatment. I know - it’s a process. Additionally, probably because of the estrogen blockers (I’m er+) I felt like my skin and tissues south of the border were incredibly “thin.” Everything felt raw and irritated and like my tissues no longer had the collagen or elasticity pre-treatment. Everything felt immobilized and paralyzed.
I ended up with a hemorrhoid a few weeks ago and decided to try something. I created a CBD suppository by freezing some CBD in coconut oil and making a bead of it and popped it up there. (I told my doctor and she saw no issue with it. There are already CBD suppositories out there.) The relief was immediate. I kept doing this for a week and observed some amazing results that had nothing to do with my ‘roid:
My bowel movements normalized and became regular again. Tissues started to strengthen and I felt more control and less tearing. I also stopped having any pain in the area. I think it’s the fact that CBD enhances circulation and reduces inflammation. I don’t know if it’s a long term solution - as in, I doubt doing this daily forever is a good idea - but it relieves tension in my entire pelvic region and I feel “normal” below the belt again. I can tell my probiotics and fiber are having a good effect and are more potent now.
YMMV, and do your research but I can’t find any evidence of CBD having any proliferation or hormone enhancing effects, particularly by this method of delivery. I used a straight CBD tincture without any additives. The benefits have been potent and amazing. Obviously pick a pure product, make sure you know how you react to CBD first and all that. Go with a small dose as absorbing things via this route makes them more potent. But there are tons of extra side benefits to restoring circulation and minimizing inflammation in the pelvic region, if you know what I mean.

2024.06.07 15:02 getaclueless_50 PVC and anxiety

Mine started after a bout of COVID and onset of menopause in 2020. Holter showed PVC/PAC/NSVT. I always felt like I was holding a live wire and my anxiety was off the charts. I know my funky beats was causing some of the anxiety, but not all of it. A combo of PPI/beta blockestatin/HRT/supplements/food modification has it mostly under control.
Finding the right beta blocker was the game changer (metoprolol ER 12.5). it was like flipping a switch turning off the anxiety. I still have a handful of off beats a day (win!) but I don't obsess about them. I fully believe that something messed up my nerves (hello Vagus) and this has caused all my other issues.
So many people on here are trying to deal with the anxiety around PVCs. I realized that i did better when i found something that dealt with my anxiety. That my anxiety was a medical issue, not a mental one. I found these articles interesting.

2024.06.07 14:55 Striking_Staffio u/ehallttu

I've been battling methane SIBO for 7 years and didn't finally get diagnosed until a year ago. I've been through the worst of it all and have had about every symptom imaginable at one point or another. I can feel your pain because I have lived the nightmare. I told myself, if there is ever a day I get back to normal, I would do my best to help others that are suffering.
As of right now, I am completely back to full health. No inflammation, no digestive problems, no food sensitivities. I went from becoming sensitive to gluten, soy, corn and then becoming lactose intolerant on top of that. My diet consisted of basically meat and veggies to manage my symptoms and allowed me to live a somewhat normal life, except I had to follow an incredibly strict diet.
I now can eat anything and everything I want with no repercussions. I eat pizza, cookies, chips, anything that would typically completely mess my body up, I have zero side effects from.
Some things I want you to know:
  1. It doesn't matter how many supplements you take, nothing is going to help you until you get rid of the bacterial overgrowth. You can do this two ways, get a prescription for rifaxin or take antimicrobial supplements. I've wasted so much money on useless things like probiotics and other nonsense. Stay away from the soccer mom blogs and such. Look up real research done.
  2. If you keep relapsing, then you have an underlying condition thats allowing bad bacteria to overgrow in the small intestine.
  3. What may work for one person, may not work for you.
Here is how I did it:
  1. I've taken rifaxin and got better but relapsed in 2 months. I now just take a concoction of antimicrobial supplements, they work just as well, but they take longer. Instead of one to two weeks with prescription meds, it took me about 4-6 weeks taking antimicrobial supplements.
- I had a bad case of SIBO and I was very aggressive in my treatment. I am not a doctor, but I've educated myself and have done lots of trial and error over the past 7 years to where I no longer deal with doctors because most of them are not very educated on SIBO.
- The supplements I took were Atrantil, berberine complex, berberine, allicin, FC Cidal, and parasym plus. (note: parasym plus was something I added on a whim to try out, it is rather expensive and I have not researched the science behind it. I can't say if it was a major factor or not for all I know it could just be another supplement scam, but it does help me have bowel movements and thats incredibly important in my recovery.)
2) With the bacteria overgrowth gone, you have to keep it gone. For me, I was always constipated and this made things really bad because of all the food issues I had. I strongly believe that prokinetics are a key factor in a persons recovery. I was prescribed zelnorm to help with my bowel movements and it also has prokinetic abilities. I love this stuff, it really helped me have natural bowel movements. I also took ginger right before bed as well.
3) You need to find your underlying cause to ever fully cure yourself. Most people claim to be cured because they feel like normal, yet they still can't eat a lot of certain foods. All they are really are doing is managing their symptoms through diet. You aren't cured until you get back to how you functioned and ate before your SIBO.
- Note: a lot of time bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine is caused by a poorly functioning migrating motor complex (MMC). This sends cleaning waves through your intestines and prevents bad bacteria from growing up in the small intestine where its not supposed to be. This is controlled through the vagus nerve.
I believe that my underlying cause is from a poorly functioning vagus nerve, due to overusing stimulants in my younger days. I took adderall and a lot of caffeine daily. I have cut out all caffeine and stimulants and my vagus nerve has greatly improved. I could be totally wrong about this, but I just know that cutting out stimulants is a huge factor that keeps me from relapsing.
I have been symptom free for over 4 months. Not a long time by any means, but the first time in 7 years I can eat like a normal person and still feel like a normal person. Could I relapse further down the road? Of course. The reason I am sharing is because once you understand your body, you can have a protocol in place if you were to relapse. One of the most stressful things for me was not knowing what was going on with my body and just trying to guess how to fix it.
I hope this might help some people, because I still remember some of my darkest days battling SIBO and no one should have to suffer through life living like that. Whatever you do, don't ever give up.

UPDATE 8/6/20:
I am still doing well and seem to have full control over my SIBO. Some things that I want to add is that my slow bowel movements are a major factor causing SIBO to return. I am taking a medication called Trulance to help keep me regular. I don't seem to have any health issues as long as I am having daily bowel movements.
I still have a couple issues that I don't have answers to. I have food sensitivities with gluten being the worst- I can have small amounts and be perfectly fine but it will end up shutting my digestive system down if I continue to eat it everyday. That puts me at risk for getting SIBO again.
Food seems to also be the cause of some of my nerve issues and I still don't fully understand that either. Too much junk food causes me to lose the sensation to urinate and defecate. When I clear out my system completely with magnesium citrate, feelings come back and things start to work normally again.
I am still slowly working through the last few issues with trial and error, but other than that I am pretty much done with my 7 year SIBO nightmare.

2024.06.07 13:27 StarTechUP_Inc Which is better? Java or JavaScript?

Read the full blog here.
As two popular programming languages (that also resemble names), Java and JavaScript are often confused with each other.
While they do share some similarities, there are also significant differences between them.
In this blog, we’ll examine these two languages in more detail and compare their features to determine which one is better for your software development project.

What is Java?

Java was created by James Gosling at Sun Microsystems in 1995. Later on, Oracle Corporation acquired the company, making Oracle the official owner of the Java SE platform.
"Write once, run anywhere" is Java's motto, meaning you can run the code on any platform without needing to recompile it. As an object-oriented programming language, Java focuses on creating and manipulating objects to perform tasks. It also acts as a platform, allowing Java code to run on any computer with a Java Virtual Machine (JVM).

Features of Java:

Some notable features of Java include:

Pros of Using Java:

There are several reasons why Java is a widely used programming language. Some of its pros include:

What is JavaScript?

JavaScript originated in the early days of the web. As internet access grew in the 1990s, tech pioneers raced to build efficient browsers. Microsoft and Netscape aimed to dominate the market with Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator. And, in 1995, Brendan Eich created JavaScript while at Netscape Communications Corporation.
JavaScript is a versatile, high-level, and dynamic programming language that has taken the tech world by storm. Traditionally seen as a front-end language running in browsers to handle client-side interactions, JavaScript’s role dramatically expanded with the introduction of Node.js, allowing it to power server-side operations as well.
But JavaScript isn't just confined to web development. It can also create games, animations, app development, and even simple utilities. Running seamlessly across desktops, servers, and mobile devices—with a little help from a browser's JavaScript engine.

Features of JavaScript:

Some notable features of JavaScript include:

Pros of Using JavaScript:

JavaScript has many benefits that make it an appealing programming language. Some pros include:

Key Differences Between Java and JavaScript

Java vs JavaScript Performance

Syntax Differences Between Java and JavaScript

In terms of syntax, some key differences between Java and JavaScript syntax include:

Popularity and Job Market

Despite being two separate languages, both Java and JavaScript have seen significant growth over the years. While Java remains the most popular programming language in terms of job market demand, JavaScript has gained tremendous popularity due to its use in web development.
According to Statista, JavaScript reigns as the most popular programming language among developers worldwide, while Java holds the seventh spot. With the surge of powerful front-end frameworks like React.js and Angular.js, JavaScript isn't just leading—it's dominating the job market for frontend developers.

Security Differences

While both Java and JavaScript have built-in security features, they differ in how they handle security.
Common Java security vulnerabilities include SQL injection and XML external entities (XEE). SQL injection occurs when user input isn't sanitized, allowing attackers to execute SQL commands. Prevent it by sanitizing inputs and using prepared statements.
Meanwhile, XEE exploits weakly configured XML parsers to access sensitive data or perform attacks. Prevent it by disabling DTD processing and configuring XML parsers securely.
On the flip side, JavaScript security vulnerabilities include Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) and code injection. XSS attacks occur when a website fails to implement the same origin policy, allowing attackers to deliver malicious code. Preventive measures include filtering input, encoding output data, and using appropriate response headers and content security policies.
Meanwhile, code injection involves injecting JavaScript or Node.js code into web forms. Preventing this requires input sanitization best practices, such as whitelisting allowable characters.

Learning curve

All programming languages come with their own learning curve. Java is often seen as tougher to learn than JavaScript. Even the basics of Java, like data abstraction, encapsulation, inheritance, and polymorphism, involve a lot of concepts. And just understanding these isn't enough to start building real programs.
JavaScript, on the other hand, is often seen as the easiest modern programming language to pick up. Actually, it's not strictly a programming language. It's more of a scripting language because it runs scripts in the web browser, which has a built-in JavaScript engine to execute the code. You can grasp the main concepts and basics of JavaScript in just a few days.
