2024.05.13 14:32 lameelanee How to get a job like working at Smosh?

Hello everyone! I’m 19 and LOVE social media. I had the scary privilege of having access to the internet since I was 5 (2010) and starting watching YouTube. From there the love just grew. And as I grew up I realized I was lucky enough to realize social media has also “grown up”. I’ve seen how this strongly changes my perspective on things and I think I look at the algorithm of social media a little differently than most people who don’t engulf their life with something like this. Anywho now that you kind of understand that. I’ve realized school just isn’t for me and I think I could make some money working in social media I just really don’t know how to start. I love looking back at old Smosh videos now because Courtney was the age I am now when she started and I’ve been watching Smosh since I was 12. All that being said I was just wondering if anyone knows any jobs that are similar to working at Smosh because it’s honestly my dream job.

2024.05.13 06:47 za_dorov Have you ever had that feeling that absolutely everything you do and think is pre-digitated? Programmed? I think my friend accidentally found proof.

A few days ago, I received a file from a journalist friend who teaches at a private university in Montevideo. I known this person for years now and the exchange with her on our countless bar nights basically made me want to try to study journalism. After I started my career we became even closer and we shared concerns about the evolution of information, social media and the infamous cerebral callosity we acquired to endure the tragedy.
My friend, let's call her Valeria, was part of a public competition to accompany a minor scientific expedition to the Uruguayan Antarctic base. Her thesis was about investigating how information reception behaves in remote and isolated areas.
I barely read it , but basically tries to show that information circulates and is received in a particular way in these circumstances by a group of unfamiliar people living under extreme climatic and isolation conditions, having as an example, life in submarines and in military bases in Siberia. The Antarctic base gave her the chance to observe some of her postulates up close.
Finally, she was chosen and traveled with this scientific group in a commercial flight Montevideo - Santiago de Chile to later arrive at Punta Arenas and fly to the Antarctic base.
The last communication I had with her before she sent me the almost 90 photographic captures of the Journal, was on March 15, 2024.
We talked over the phone about how the weather was in Montevideo, that it does not stop raining and the cars are practically floating on the streets. She told me that the transport that was going to take them back was having mechanical problems and they would probably have to order spare parts for the plane from Punta Arenas. Then She told me that it is freaking cold down there and his colleagues are all very boring. Nobody has whisky for the evenings. We laughed about that part because I told her to bring at least one bottle of Grappa in her purse.
Before saying goodbye, she told me they had spotted some old metal structures south of the base. The soldiers told her that it was safe to go near that part so she was going to explore them. It wasn't there when they first arrived and that the recent and atypical heat wave probably must have exposed it. I told her to be careful and we said goodbyes.
Three days later I received an email. “Valeria shared a file with you.” As I start to see what it was about she calls me.
“Mauro? MAURO!, can you hear me?” She said in a nervous and excited voice.
“I can barely hear you, what happened?”I asked half asleep, while still lying on my bed.
“Listen to me carefully, don't talk, just listen” I could tell by her agitation that she was walking fast or maybe running. The creaking footsteps in the snow could be heard in the background. in the distance, a catastrophe-type siren was blaring.
“Are you alright? What happened? What's that noise?” I said, now sitting on the edge of my bed.
“I sent you a file. Transfer it to a flash drive, delete history and reset your cell phone, the computer and your email address. I'll explain everything later, it'll be worth it.”
“What? What are you talking about Vale?, what for? Tell me what's going on - I started to yell at her, in slide panic.
“Listen, I found something that is not supposed to exist. In the diary he explains everything. I'm going back to the base, I think someone is following me, I set off an alarm or something. Save that file for me until I get there and remember that... “
There were two loud booms and the sound of water invading the transmission. A choked bubbling and cracking sound reminded me of ice collapsing. My friend had fallen into the water, in Antarctica.
“HEY, are you OK?! What happened?!” - I kept screaming hysterically until the call was cut off.
I looked at my cell phone for a second. My hands were shaking, I tried calling several times but the phone went dead. I looked at the compressed file. I jumped up and ran to the dining room furniture, frantically looking for a white flash drive that had to be in a drawer somewhere. I couldn't find it, so I went back to my desk. I pulled the drawer so hard that it came off the rail and fell to the floor. I started to dig through my belongings on the floor, coins, papers, cards, nothing.
I thought, I struggled to remember where I had fucking put it. Finally I saw my backpack peeking out from behind the desk chair, I jumped on it and in the second small pocket from the inside, there was a cheap white 16G flash drive. I put it in the pc, downloaded the file directly there, took it out and fabric restored the entire system on the computer. I do the same with my cell phone as Valeria said.
At the time I didn't even question if those measures really prevented me from being tracked, and the idea that that was the reason made panic run through my body like lightning. Sitting on the floor of my room next to the mess, my body was numb with tension. After a few seconds, I rebooted my cell phone to try to call Lucia, her sister.
“Hello?”
“Lucia, it's that you? I think something bad happened to Vale, I hear her over the phone as if she fell into the water, and some rumbling. I don't know what I heard, I think she got into some trouble or some place she shouldn't have been - I realized that I was mumble and not saying anything clear. For some reason, I didn't mention the file.
“It can't be Mauro, I just spoke to her on the phone. She was at the airport in Santiago de Chile at the boarding lounge, we talked for about half an hour, she told me she was bringing a fancy bourbon to share and…”
I stopped listening, it didn't make sense, how could it be? what the fuck is going on!
“Mauro, are you ok? Is something wrong? it's too early, are you sure you didn't dream it?”
“Did you talk to her? half an hour ago? But...,” I exclaimed without being able to hide my confusion.
“Are you... sure it was her?”
“Yes, of course you moron, it's my sister! Did you smoke pot again on an empty stomach?”
“No, you're right, nevermind, thanks Lucia, talk to you soon.” I ended the call without letting her say goodbye.
Had I dreamt about it? I erased everything now, how will I know if I dreamt it? I hesitated absurdly.
This is surreal, I thought to myself as I looked at the flash drive in my hand. I refocused my attention and went to the attic looking for my brother's old laptop he left me before going to live in Spain. It was practically useless, but it was enough to see the file. I turned it on, waited for the decrepit Windows XP to load, and put the flashdisk in, opened the compressed folder and found two files.

“PersonalDiary.pdf”
I decided to open the journal first. From what I interpreted from the loading order of the screenshots, after reading it, I opened the image of the last page.
I transcribe as is.
Day 243 of the 2nd mission 10: 40 am. March 12, 2019.
I am the head researcher of the Psychological Area at the UN Antarctic base; I'm currently assigned to Project Sisyphus categorized as the highest classified rank.
This is going to sound crazy, but the person living with my family is my clone.
It still surprises me when I say it out loud, but after being able to replicate the brain-muscular history (a perfect copy of our memory) of any person and having mastered replicating every cell of our bodies at any age, it was only a matter of time before the development of social biotechnology would emerge. Now and by worldwide agreement, as a complete secret.
There is absolutely no shame or a shred of ethics in what we do, there is no longer any constraint on what we can do to the subjects for the sake of research. That haunts me every day.
It all went to shit so fast, I doubt anyone will come to our rescue. The protocol says so, the base in the face of an imminent security risk will erase itself. The structure was designed to collapse methodically following a protocol of incineration and sinking. The immediate perimeter has underwater mines that make the ice collapse almost imperceptibly, but deadly to anyone who tries to leave.
No one can escape from the base, neither the research staff nor the subjects. Our place in the world is already taken.
I only hope that this journal along with my lab notes will be found at some point. I managed to construct a small insulating gasket for it so I trust it will survive in case this part of the building collapses as well.
Please use this data to let the world know what happened here and don't let perversity define us once again.
To my family: I love you and miss you every minute.
B.
At the exact moment I ended the reading I received a video call that made me jump with fright, it is...
Valeria.
With my pulse shaking, I answered the call.
“Hi you! The flight was delayed, can you believe it? This one is absolutely in my top three, worst trips of my life. I'm really hungry and everything is so expensive here. What are you up to? Tell me something, please, I'm soooo bored!”
I looked at her with confusion and I couldn't manage to pronounce words. When I was about to modulate an answer she interrupted me.
“What's the matter Mauro?, are you on pause? Is the signal OK? HELLO! Can you hear me? Can you see me?” She started to walk through the boarding lounge looking for better signal
“Yes yes, Valeria I can hear you.”
She laughed and looked at me with a face between sensual and serious, and continued.
“Do you miss me?” while raising the phone jokingly as she typically does in her selfie pose.
“Valeria, don't you remember calling me earlier today?”
“I? called you? Nop. Why? Ah! By the way, did you know there are penguins in Tierra del Fuego? I would have liked to go and see them.” She continued his verbose conversation in a carefree tone, with her typical hand gestures and playing with his hair.
“Well, at last!” She interrupted herself and shouted, jumping up from her chair.
“We are being called to board, see you in a couple hours!” She said goodbye with a smiling sonority, and began to walk towards the boarding gate.
But at the last second, before ending the call, her gesture changed. She looked directly at the camera with a hardened and emotionless face and almost mechanically, she whispered.
“(I'm going to retrieve that diary).”
My stomach dropped to the floor and I could feel as if my blood was running cold with fear. I could not shake the awful and eerie feeling that this person, who was returning, whom I had never in my life called by her full name, was not my friend.
So, the next couple of hours I put everything in to transcribe the rest of important passages of the diary. Something was compelling me to do it, i can't explain it, Some mix between moral duty, and morbid curiosity. Here is my selection of it.
Lab notes. day 96 of 1st mission 08:00 am December 22, 2016.
Subject JON X012:
First physical assessments: Normal, alert and inquisitive, exhibits some alteration to screens.
We place 100 cc of sedative in room air. The subject attentively follows the narrative of scenario B5 “The last mission”.
The subject responds positively to the premises of the story, where he is asked to address an audience threatened by a natural disaster, convincing them to choose a certain path out of the city.
He offers to collaborate but fails to articulate the message with the power to overcome the simulation.
We resort to pouring 125cc of concentrated Psilocybin into the air as stipulated in the protocol sheet.
The vocal frequency and body language reading receptors in the observation room are activated. The subject manages to formulate a series of premises articulately and with discursive power, circulating around the observation room.
Successful reaction.
We move on to the next stage.
Case is filed under the label “Jobs Project.”
Diary entry: Day 96 of the 1st mission 21:30 pm. December 22, 2016.
Today they transferred subject JON X0012 for psychological evaluation, several in the lab were very anxious about this arrival. I was never the religious type, but I can understand why. Truth be told,
I always imagined Jesus would be taller.

Day 106 of the 1st mission 08:00 am January 02, 2017
Today we received a new lab assistant for the night shift. Much needed as I was covering these shifts myself and am really burned out. The underground operates at full power at those hours, the hum of the machinery becomes unbearable. This must be why the rooms have an insulating structure.
********
Day 112 of the 1st mission 19:00 pm January 08, 2017.
The new integration is not very bright. He labeled the transcripts wrong again yesterday and doesn't seem to fully understand the importance of these. I'm going to have to go through the whole method with him again. I don't have much patience lately, it's not his fault, he seems like a nice guy and it's real that I need a second of confidence. Better train him from now on. Maybe start a sketch of a short explanatory document.
*******
Small introductory guide.
When the subjects conclude the incubation and breeding process (pages 19 to 52 of the manual), that is to say, that they have at least remembered speech and with it, depending on the time in which they lived, reading and writing, they generally begin to perceive themselves. Just before situational curiosity is when the psychology department comes into action. Either to run the “stand by” simulation or the main tests.
In each subject's file is the target of their cloning, the era in which they lived, and the recommended scenarios to trigger the desired response. If the file has X amount on the cover, this corresponds to the generation of the subject, whether it is the first or 10th time it is incubated.
Generally, it takes between 2 and 5 attempts to generate the correct simulation, and administer the appropriate drugs.
It took 5 attempts to come up with the correct amount of methamphetamine that subject AH X005 (Hitler) needed to function in the scenario, as the correct amount bordered on overdose.
Simulations are much easier since the implementation of multisensor AI. We managed to generate almost any scenario including temperature, smells, lights and sounds. We tried not to use familiar ones, as human smells are impossible to replicate. We found this out in a complicated way. We tried to recreate a conversation between RR subject X003 (Reagan) and his mother, but he recognized the fakery by the absence of body odor. His mind collapsed and we had to move him to the Underground. The people in Area C (Private Clients) almost lost a very large Chinese account.
After calibrating the subject, we ran both psychological and behavioral tests, scanned retinas, analyzed blood, as well as vocal and body language. But what has really yielded surprising results are the free interviews. It is amazing what some minds are capable of with the right environmental and chemical stimulation. That's why transcription is vital (!!)
Our area develops BC (Behavioral Algorithms) which are then bought by the private sector, and some government agencies.
To give you some examples: Twitter was an idea of subject JO X008 (Orwell).
Bots in social media and the use of big data was an idea of JG X002 (Goebbels) and KM X014`s worst nightmare (Marx) was bought by Amazon.
It is an arduous process and the success rate is low, but when we achieve the goal per subject, well, these results are a mein part of the latest revolutions of mankind.
So follow the lab rules, never refer to subjects by their actual historical name, and always remember, they are assets, not people.

Day 117 of the 1st mission 16:30 am January 12, 2017.
Today is a rest day all over area D. I miss many things from the old world that I thought I would never miss, taking a bus, standing in line with strangers, and today I miss Sundays. We only have one on the month. So as usual we gather in the rest area to listen to a liberated jukebox that tries to lighten the mood. I know, right? Why I wrote about this “Saturday” photocopy, well besides the same nostalgic drunks, I was approached by a person I didn't recognize.
From what I understood he was a rehabilitated alcoholic, maybe that's why I didn't see him on “Saturdays”. He must be in his 50's, he was portly and wore thick black-rimmed glasses, he seemed to have a slight limp, I noticed it when he went to refill my beer.
I am a very reserved person and find it hard to talk to people. Truth be told, I've lost the desire to talk to people here. What can you actualy fucking talk about here, if it's not about the same thing. Everything revolves around work and some inter-area gossip, which never escalates much.
But yesterday was Clara's birthday and to hide the remorse and sadness of only having shared with her the first 3 years of her life, I had a few too many beers.
We chatted about banal aspects of life in isolation, and the things we miss. For him it was going to the stadium to watch soccer with his grandchildren. I think it was loneliness and nostalgia that brought us together that night.
His name was Sigfried, I don't know if I spelled it right, but it was clearly Nordic, i notice because of some of the words he mixed up with English. He works as the underground level security manager. We all know that it is one of the most restricted areas and what we have learned in these almost 10 years in the project, is that the more restricted, the less questions you should ask.
But that day, I think I felt the urge to hurt myself, to go off the rails, so I asked what we all suspected but no one knew for sure. I asked about the blenders. I wish I hadn't.
************
Day 126 of the 1st mission 08:00 am January 21, 2017.
I almost can't express how furious I am today, but I'm going to try because if I don't, I'm going to punch the new assistant in the face. He has nothing to do with this, he's just mildly irritating.
Anyway, in Genetic Mapping or area A, they approved the incubation of another Anomaly. It seems to be an express request from a major shareholder and there is not much to say. Anomalies are very risky to reproduce, nature is wise, and for some reason it placed them in history moments where they had their limitations.
It seems that after the crisis of 2010 with “The Russian Devil” it is no longer scary enough. New school morons... If they had been there they wouldn't even dare to think about it. I AM FURIOUS.
The arguments are that this case lived longer, that the clone would be in his 70s, and that he possessed noticeably more “civilized” traits. As if the court of the last Zar had not been somewhat civilized.
Personally I think this is a big mistake. Since the discovery that some people possess unknown DNA components and with the 2010 background, they should draw the line. There are certain things, still beyond our ability to understand. But it is delusional of me to think that there are limits, someday the absence of them will consume us all.

Lab notes day 142 of 1st mission 08:00 am February 06, 2017.
Final free interview with JON subject X012
Scenario B-24 or “The Dinner Party” Result: Normal.
Notes: Subject is grateful, positive, docile and hopeful for the future. Offers to cook next time by asking for spices and ingredients of typical Hindu dishes.
The subject is directed to the Underground area.
Attached audio for transcription.
Case is filed under the label “Jobs Project”.

Day 142 of the 1st mission 21:00 pm February 06, 2017.
Today was the last session with subject JON X012, I managed to extract the last retinal and body language readings, as usual before sending them to Underground level. We ran the dinner scenario, the truth is that is one of the best simulations we have achieved. The subjects are relaxed resulting in the best free interview environment. This one was no exception, I must say I understand the charm of the “messiah” turned out to be quite an entertaining subject. I hope his next generation will be similar.

Day 152 of the 1st mission 19:00 pm February 16, 2017.
I was tasked with the continuous monitoring of subject NT X004. I am not at all happy with this transfer. First of all, I know nothing about area B of engineering and technology. Secondly, I still think this is a really bad idea.
One of the laboratories has been set up with the essential simulation equipment and personnel. Tomorrow we start with the calibration.
**********
Lab notes day 153 of the 1st mission 08:00 am February 17, 2017.
First interview with subject NT X004, we run simulation scenario 54-A, “Signal from another planet.”
Subject is observed to be receptive at first but quickly changes to paranoid. We administer 300cc of MDMA via air, according to protocol.
We introduce the reconstructed figure of a colleague in a cry for help speech.
The Subject laughs and doesn't believe a word, we move to a physical approach plane,
I volunteer myself with a room operator from the engineering area, we show him unfinished plans of an experimental vacuum propulsion engine.
He laughs again and tells us that we are not who we say we are.
We administer 50cc of DMT and move on to the next scenario.
From the screen an astronaut with non-human features sends a distress signal and intergalactic coordinates.
The subject looks thoughtful, reassesses, picks up the blueprints and begins to shout out values and what appears to be mathematical and physical formulas.
Air is charged with percentages of absolute sedation.
Audio recording is attached.
It is filed under the name “Project SpaceX.”
**********
Day 153 of the 1st mission 21:00 pm February 17, 2017.
I'm not sure what happened today, this is the first time in 10 years that a subject overcame the deception of 3 simulations. We had to place absolute sedation in the air, as risky as we know it is. I recommended that we restart the process from scratch, but it was a resounding no, the client is in a hurry.
I need to get more involved in this case to recalibrate the subject. I don't know if I want to. The words before full sedation still resonate with me. “are you still using DC current? interesting...”
**********
Day 154 of the 1st mission 21:00 pm February 18, 2017.
Something happened, I don't quite know what. The rooms have an emergency lockdown active. Outside hear security personnel mobilizing. I tried the intercom but it didn't work. The insulation prevents my screams from being heard from the outside. If this goes on another day I'm going to break the lock. I'm going to set my backpack to the bare minimum.
**********
Day 157 of the 1st mission 21:00 pm February 21, 2017.
Yesterday I heard explosions in the B area. I couldn't take it anymore and broke the lock. Whatever it was I had to go out and see. The corridors were dark, and the underground buzzer went on, at least that worked.
I went right to the north staircase, down the 4 floors in near darkness, the power was failing. The entrance to the underground area was barricaded but I managed to see a figure peeking out from inside as they felt me making noises.
It was Sigfried, he pointed me in the doors direction and I entered through a heavily armored side door. I was surprised by the immensity of this section, it encompassed a large hall below almost all the sectors of the base. In front of us there were 4 large industrial pipes with switches and multiple smaller pipes coming out of their bases. These were repeated like mosaics throughout the area until they disappeared into the distance in the darkness.
Leaning against one of them were 3 officers in formerly white coats and a nearly dead guard bloodied on the floor. Poor guy, his legs were crushed with his flesh in the open. He was lying in a pool of his own blood.
He had a blank stare and was panting, it seemed from the pale of his skin, that his fate was imminent. My asthma began to pound in my chest sharply, so I reached into my bag looking for my inhaler. I told them between visible gasps of bad breath to please tell me what's happened.
One of the doctors had a badge from area B and another from area E which corresponds to bio-armamentistics. The latter burst into tears and said “We deserve it, every one of us, we deserve it”.
I knew the other guy, he is an engineer in area B. I could hear him babbling almost nonsensically about, as why they never thought about it, an issue with electrical power.
He looked at me carefully as if recognizing me and grabbed me tightly by my jacket pulling me close to his face transformed for the panic.
“He let them out, all of them!” but not only that, no no no no... he told them the truth. Nikola fucking Tesla hacked us and told them the truth.”
He began to laugh frantically with a face of absurdity until he burst into a choked cry. At that moment everything went dark. The emergency lights activated, and from far away and getting closer, along with the emergency sirens that began to sound, we heard a large mass of people screaming and running through the corridors outside.
Sigfried looked at me as they started to pound on the shielded door and said.
“We're fucked.”

Day xx of the second mission, month xx of 2017
“()The industrial sounds of spinning blades, the cries for mercy followed by the thunderous, liquid crack, down that big pipe, into the green barrels, with the Monsanto logo, dripped down one side an elongated drop of pink paste ending in the letter E on the chemical label. FERTILIZER.”
**********
After finishing the transcription, my whole body began to want to flee, the walls of my house were tinged with a faint blue light as the cloudy dusk came through the window, the lights turned off by my abstraction at the computer gave way to the dark corridors that began to feel alien. As I gently closed the pc my ears began to ring as if under pressure, my breathing became more present and the vibration of my cell phone interrupted my trance.
A call from the office. It was to tell me that I had a vacation week pending, that by schedule, I had to take it starting today.
Sons of bitches, now they even choose your time off - I thought at first, but at the same time I found the voice on the phone very strange, and to tell the truth, the procedure itself.
The anger turned into confusion that only added to the paranoia. The sounds in the street began to seem erratic, a chaotic and strangely familiar feeling came over me. My senses seemed increasingly acute, and they screamed:
Go away.
I grabbed the old laptop, the flash drive and headed for the bus station. The short trip from my house seemed like a long journey. People on the street looked at me with strange faces, the cell phone kept ringing with unknown numbers on the screen and a strange idea began to formulate in my head that whispered “Them, Valeria is one of Them”.
Already on the platforms I rummaged through my backpack where I confirmed that I had the key to the family beach house in San Luis, 60 km to the east of Montevideo. I turned off my cell phone, got on a bus heading to another and much far away town called Treinta y Tres. Sat near the last seat and slipped my cell phone in my front pocket of the seat in front of me, got off and commented to the driver with a clueless face, “I got confused, I'm going to the coast”.
I almost jumped onto the steps of the correct bus to where I was heading, unable to avoid the gazes of the passengers questioning me for the last minute drop in. I sat in my numbered seat and defragmented in dissociation, trying to understand what I was doing, I was running away, but from what?
The images of the last transcriptions were engraved in my mind, the last paragraph was repeated over and over again making me shake my head from time to time trying to get them away from my thoughts. The road was dark and I lost track of time, the digital clock within sight of the passengers jingling since we left, reading 10:40.
“San Luis Station!” - I heard the guard's shout in low volume.
I staggered to my feet, hurried to get off and with the same impulse I entered the dirt roads.
I zig-zagged through the dark, cold and silent beach town. The moonless night and the smell of the sea calmed me.
When I turned the corner to the gabled beach house of my family, on the steps of the front door lit by a white light, was her. Sitting, waiting for me. I stopped dead in my tracks and a chilling vertigo ran down my torso to my throat. We looked at each other for a short two seconds, until she stopped and started walking in sliding steps towards me, smiling and playing with her hands, crossing and uncrossing her arms. The growing sound of the wind through the trees covered us.
“Darling, how are you? How nice is the summer house, I don't think we ever came here, did we? Is it the one your grandmother left you?”
I felt the adrenaline rushing through my bloodstream, how could such a familiar attitude from such a familiar person transmit such panic to me? I had to answer something.
“Yes, this is it. I came to clear my head for a while, they gave me a few days at work and I wanted to take advantage of it.” I tried to excuse myself with failed dissimulation, since I stuttered in the middle of the words.
“Yes, I know! We arranged it with them, so you can be more relaxed and as a gesture for taking care of the file. Ah! and another thing. I think someone stole your cell phone at the bus station.” She looked at me with a smart-ass smile.
“Anyway, don't worry, they already found it on a bus on the way to “Treinta y tres”. You can get it back later.”
At this point I opened my mouth to ask for explanations, but as terrified as I was I only mumbled a “thank you”.
All this dialogue let us half a body length away, Valeria looked at me now a little more serious and stood at my side. She took my arm petrified and I could feel how a strong smell of neutral soap invaded me, as if she had rubbed herself in it too much.
“Shall we go inside? it's getting cold,” She said, finishing the sentence with a sweet gesture of pleading.
“Emm, shure.” I said.
My trembling hands managed to hit the lock on the 3rd attempt, we entered, turned on the lights and from his backpack she took out a red wine. Our favorite.
“Bring me some glasses, Mauro”. - She said to me as she sat down on the armchair against the window overlooking the gentle hills outside.
She poured wine until he almost filled the ex-cottage cheese glass, looked at me and in a toast gesture said.
“To... Dr. B?”
I slid a little smile and raised my eyebrows. Then I took half a glass in one sip.
“Well!” - She exclaimed, leaning over and resting the glass on the coffee table, and continued.
"You must be very confused, I understand, I saw it many times, the mind trying to adapt to a new, unsuspected reality and in your case all at once. It is not easy. First, make sure that no one is going to hurt you or anyone you know, second, what you read in that file, as you may have noticed, is not intended for public knowledge. Also to tell you”. I couldn't take the stress anymore, I exploded.
“You're not Vale. Who are you?! You're almost identical, but....”
“Ah yes, that one it's a tricky one to explain. Let's try, let's see:
“I'm a version of Valeria that she accidentally gendered when entered the lab. In one of the incubation rooms she touched a scan button that photographs her mind for 48 hours. It contains a micro needle that took her blood and thus generated me.”
“The thing is that we were in a situation of self-destruction of the systems, and that part of the programming code of the protocol was also copied in Valeria's mind.”
“And Valeria? She 's... dead?”
“Well, yes and no. If she tried to leave the base she's probably dead. if she's still there, she's probably frozen to death or killed by the cleanup command, but basically, if I'm here, she's not anymore.”
the coldness with which she answered me made me lose the little calm I had, I got up from the armchair and started to back away with my hands on my head, I couldn't stop repeating,
“this can't be happening, this can't be happening”.
“Hey! Mauro, calm down, it's going to be alright. I'm Valeria too. In every way, I'm still your friend, I know who you are and everything we went through, really, it's me, and when I finish managing the leak, the code, it won't work anymore, it will be erased from my mind and I'll be me. So don't worry. You only have to give me the flash disc and this issue ends here. We go back to normal life and nobody will know about anything.
“I'm not going to pretend that my friend didn't die! Alone, fucking freezing to death, I'm not going to let you take her place, I'm not going to let you!” - She interrupted me.
“Mauro, listen to me” - She came closer to me and grabbed my hands, her big, lined eyes looking at me with sweetness, like so many times before.
“I AM Valeria, I have the same fingerprints, the same blood, the same DNA, the same memories, the same scars, absolutely everything. Are you going to tell my mother that I died? to my sister? Are you going to report me? Nobody is going to believe you at all. If anyone even wants to believe you, how would you prove it? I am an exact copy”. - she told me, smiling with real sweetness and empathy.
I could only cry, for my friend, for the helplessness of the conclusion that she was right. I collapsed on the couch, and watched as the hills swayed in the night.
“Let's have the last glass and I'm leaving.”- she said to me.
“After I give you this, and that part of you disappears, will you remember that you are not... really Valeria?
“No, there is already a simulation on pause about Valeria's last week, she won't remember anything about this situation when she wakes up, because the memory is simply overwritten.”
“So I'm going to be the only one to know about this?”
“Take it as a gift Mauro, a glimpse behind the veil. And if you keep it that way, everything will be fine” - The threatening tone was soft but evident.
“Okay, hand me your PC and the flash drive.”
I looked at her evaluating all possible actions and if this decision was the right one, she stretched out her hand and smiled sympathetically. I gave her the old computer and the black 16G flash drive with the file. She inserted it, typed mechanically fast until the screen went black.
“Perfect, That would be all - She took out the flash drive, threw it on the floor and stepped on it violently with the heel of her shoe, put on his backpack and headed for the door.
“Stop,” I said.
“The things that Dr. B wrote... about the underground…
“Yes, they are true, it was the only way to be self-sustainable and to be able to isolate the complex from the rest of the world. Even the most morally flexible scientists would question the work if they knew where the subjects ended up, and what we were doing with their bodies... Anyway, I'm going home, Lucia called me 5 times already. Talk to you tomorrow.
“Love you,.” - She smiled at me and closed the door behind her. I felt a car slowly drive away from the house.
From my pocket I took out the white flash drive and looked at it. Now I had a decision to make.

2024.05.12 12:42 ThrowRAbola My (M29) fiancé (F27) gets really upset when I try to rationalize spending less on our vacation trips. Am I too stingy with money?

Hello there!
As title suggests - I’m running into a problem/ conflict of interests with my dear Fiancé. Let me share our situation. We’ve been a couple for 5 years in total coming up to 2 years being engaged. She’s a rather shy, introvert - not really people oriented person. She likes to hike and travel. I’m on the other hand am a bit more open (which sometimes lean into people pleasing) and love cars and tinkering in my garage. I actually don’t like hiking too much - especially because I had an ACL surgery some time ago and the knee still hurts. Here’s another issue - I make almost 10x more money than her (we live in a poor Eastern European country) which is very abnormal for standard of living of people around us. I consider this as a blessing, but i don’t like to show anyone around that I make that much - I don’t like to dress up, no fancy dinners, fancy house etc. The only thing I like to splurge my money on are cars - can’t afford super cars yet, but I’m saving up for them. In the meantime I drive around a 2010 hatchback which I like to do mods and maintenance. The other portion of the money I try to invest. My fiancé is also not a fan of fancy living… but she likes the traveling bit. It’s her dream to travel and do all sorts of super expensive trips to Canada, New Zealand , Himalayas etc… I tend to always respond that I’m not a fan and that it will cost a lot of money which I don’t want to spend. I’m happy where I am. She always gets upset and angry at me for that. I’m not sure how to handle that talk with her so she understands my point of view. Bear in mind that we do travel! I’ve taken her to previous places she wanted to go - almost all of our vacation are her destinations which she picks, plans the trips, points which hotels/airbnbs we stay etc. We almost exclusively are doing the hiking trips during shorter holidays or weekends - so it’s not like I don’t do anything she likes. I mostly do whatever she likes. That’s the thing. We tend to split the travel bills 60/40 so it’s fair considering the wage gap. But I often feel like I’m the one who has to pay for fulfilling her dreams and when it comes to my dreams - I’m 100% alone and I’m not expecting her to even pay for the fuel for my “fancier” car when it uses a bit more than a regular car would.
Should I maybe shift my perspective? Am I to stingy with money? What’s your take?

2024.05.11 12:16 Lost-Amoeba-7666 Day 1: Perspective

Day 1: Perspective
(Living document)
I would be initially focusing on free courses from well known universities. To do that, I spent a few hours going through MIT's and UCBerkeley's curriculum and created a diagram for me to keep things in perspective. I am sharing it here to help you if need be.
In the attached image, the violet courses are advanced courses and I will leave them for very last and will start applying already before I start doing them.
I would choose one or more courses from each category to solidify my understanding + MIT 6.042J prerequisite. I will edit this post to include things I did/will do.
The curriculum and how you can start and what you can do in parallel I'll detail at the end of this post (currently in the making). Until that, just do the prerequisite (MIT 6.042J) with which you can start 6.0001 in parallel as they are not related.
Also, a list created by one other self-taught person who got a job as a Software Developer at Amazon is here. (Very helpful after finishing with the courses).

Prerequisites:

MIT 6.042J: ( 100 hours - 40h videos + 60h thinking/solving problems)
I choose the Fall 2010 version of the course because I like the lecture videos from the professor. All materials except the solutions to problem sets are available here.
The solutions to problem sets are here.
Youtube videos for the course taught in 2010 are here.
Additional stuff:
University of London - Mathematics for Computer Science

Main syllabus:

(Grey)
MIT 6.0001 - Intro to programming
MIT 6.0002 - A bit more programming
If the above edX courses are starting later, use the following links for the same content just in a different format:
MIT 6.0001 - Intro to programming
MIT 6.0002 - A bit more programming
(Blue)
MIT 6.006 - Data structures and Algorithms
UCB CS61B - Data structures and Algorithms
(Green)
UCB CS61A - Intermediate programming
MIT 6.1010 - Intermediate programming
MIT 6.1020 - Software engineering
Additional stuff:
DerekBanas's Design Videos
(Yellow) (I'll only watch videos/read books for this topic but not do most questions)
  1. CS 61C

Curriculum (based on number of hours)

To be done..

Jim Simons, a mathematician who became one of the most successful investors in modern financial history, has died at age 86.
A cutting-edge code breaker and geometer, Simons helped pioneer a revolution in trading, embracing a computer-oriented, quantitative style in the 1980s well ahead of the Wall Street crowd. He and his team employed trading algorithms and artificial intelligence to outperform the market—and the likes of Warren Buffett and George Soros. Later, Simons became a political donor and an influential philanthropist in the worlds of science, health and education.
Simons, the son of a Boston shoe-factory executive, developed an early passion for mathematics and ignored the advice of the family physician who urged him to steer clear of the field because he wouldn’t make a living. The warning proved misplaced.
Simons began his career as a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University. He proved popular with students. One year, Simons amused a graduate class by confessing that he didn’t know much about the topic—partial differential equations—but that he viewed teaching the course as a good way to learn.
Simons became restless, though. He started businesses with friends and dabbled in trading. Friends and family detected a desire for wealth.
“Jim understood at an early age that money is power,” said Barbara Simons, his first wife, in an interview.
During the Cold War, in 1964, Simons joined a U.S. intelligence organization fighting the Soviet Union. He successfully broke Russian code but was fired when he took a public stance against the Vietnam War, upsetting his boss, who had spoken in favor of the war.
Simons joined Stony Brook University in Long Island, N.Y., where he ran the math department, developing an ability to recruit talented professors. At 37, he won geometry’s highest honor, cementing his reputation in the world of mathematics. His Chern-Simons theory remains one of the most widely cited math papers of the past century.

Farewell to academia

In 1978, at the age of 40, Simons astonished his colleagues by quitting academia to try his hand at trading. He started an investment firm in a dreary Long Island strip mall, next to a women’s clothing boutique and two doors from a pizza joint. At the time, many rivals were “fundamental” investors, chatting with corporate managers, scrutinizing balance sheets and relying on judgment and intuition to predict the ups and downs of investments.
Where others saw the zigs and zags as chaos, Simons, who had been trained to scrutinize large data sets, sensed that financial markets had more structure than most presumed.
“I developed a view that markets are not random, and [were] to some extent predictable,” he later said in an interview with The Wall Street Journal. “There were statistical anomalies that could be exploited.”
Early on, Simons traded like most others, reading the news and betting on gold prices and other investments. He scored gains but found it hard to endure the market’s volatility. He developed stomach pains and berated himself for miscues.
“One day you’re a genius, the next you feel like a dope,” Simons said. “Fundamental trading gave me ulcers.”
Simons set out to build an automated trading system that could discover fleeting and overlooked patterns in prices.
“I want models that will make money while I sleep,” Simons told a friend at the time. “A pure system without humans interfering.”
Simons hired scientists and mathematicians who used data going back centuries, predictive algorithms and machine learning. They often met with frustration.
“There’s a pattern here; there has to be a pattern,” Simons insisted one day.
At one point, their trading system inadvertently came close to cornering the market for Maine potatoes, to the dismay of regulators.
“We were viewed as flakes with ridiculous ideas,” said Elwyn Berlekamp, who helped lead the firm in the 1980s, in a 2017 interview.

A payoff, finally

By 1990, Simons and his team, in their East Setauket, N.Y., headquarters, had identified ways to profit from currency, commodity and other markets using short-term patterns they had found. It took years longer, but the firm, by then called Renaissance Technologies, eventually discovered a way to make billions of dollars on stocks.
Their winning strategy: holding investments for short periods, even minutes, turning almost all of the trading decisions to computers—and maintaining a veil of secrecy unlike almost any in Wall Street’s history. Colleagues said one reason for the firm’s success was Simons’s ability to coax accomplished mathematicians and scientists to join his firm, and get them to work together—his genius was managing genius.
“There is one GOAT [greatest of all time]. His name was Jim Simons,” said Clifford Asness, managing and founding principal of AQR Capital Management. “That he was also a nice, kind, generous and caring man just makes it that much more amazing.”
Between 1988 and 2018, Renaissance’s flagship Medallion Fund produced gains of more than $100 billion and average annual returns of 66% before the firm’s unusually hefty investor fees. The annual gains were 39% after those fees, a performance that topped those of Buffett, Soros, Peter Lynch and other investors during that period. Medallion years ago became a fund only open to Simons and his colleagues.
Simons defied the odds in other ways. He was a regular cigarette smoker, lighting up in office buildings, restaurants and most everywhere else. Once, during a presentation to potential clients, Simons couldn’t find an ashtray so he buried his cigarette butt deep in a sheet cake, amazing his guests.

Many converts

Today, more investors have embraced Simons’s mathematical, computer-oriented approach. About one-third of all money is managed by so-called quant firms, and businesses in various industries rely on algorithms.
Away from trading, Simons suffered tragedy. One son, Paul, died in a bicycle accident. Another, Nicholas, died while scuba diving.
“My life is either aces or deuces,” Simons once told a colleague.
Over the years, Simons reduced his role at the firm while focusing on science, education and other philanthropies. In 2010 he resigned as Renaissance’s chief executive, yielding the job to longtime employee and former International Business Machines computer scientist Peter Brown. Simons retired as chairman in 2021.
Simons’s health had deteriorated recently.
Simons gave away more than $6 billion during his lifetime. The Simons Foundation became a leading private funder of research in basic science. Simons also provided annual stipends of $15,000 to more than 1,000 top math and science teachers in New York City. He funded efforts to discover treatments for autism and spent $75 million to build an observatory in Chile to gain an understanding of creation’s earliest moments.
In 2021, Simons and senior Renaissance executives agreed to pay up to $7 billion to settle a long-running tax probe related to how the firm converted short-term gains into long-term profits, which are typically taxed at a lower rate. It was one of the biggest settlements in Internal Revenue Service history.
Simons was one of the biggest backers of Democratic candidates, supporting the presidential campaigns of Joe Biden and Hillary Clinton. Meanwhile, Robert Mercer, then the co-CEO of Renaissance, in 2016 became one of then-presidential-candidate Donald Trump’s most important backers.
In a 2019 speech, Simons offered a life lesson to MIT students.
“Be guided by beauty,” he said. “It can be a way a company runs, or the way an experiment comes out, or the way a theorem comes out, but there’s a sense of beauty when something is working well, almost an aesthetic to it.”
Simons is survived by his wife, Marilyn Simons, and three children. His earlier marriage to Barbara Simons ended in divorce.

2024.05.10 22:16 Formal_Ad_9576 Rant about apparently updated version of TrueNAS Scale

EDIT: It appears that ACL mode and type were not in inherit mode which would have prevented this whole problem but they were in POSIX for some reason. I set ACL type to SMB/NFSv4 and ACL Mode to Restricted and now every single problem I mentioned is gone. So I have at some point used to wrong settings and can really blame only myself for that.
Note: This is going to be similar to the github rant which became a meme a while back
I made a TrueNAS Scale NAS for the first time about a year ago and it was really easy. The access control to datasets was easy, the apps worked, setting quota for datasets was easy and everything in general was easy to do for a person who has mosly used windows with some experience in linux.
But now I "moved" the NAS to my other PC meaning that I reinstalled TrueNAS Scale with the same hard drives. Ever since I've been having constant issues with it. It has the same datasets with same settings which work. But now I tried to make the quota for one dataset larger and get this error: [EINVAL] pool_dataset_update.aclmode: Must be set to DISCARD when acltype is POSIX or OFF and I have literally no idea what it means but I see the word ACL on it so I just strip the ACL and make it again from a clean table but now I can't even make new ACL because of some "Mask" and default ACL settings. I have no goddamn idea what even is the purpose of this "Mask" but it seems like a line of code in program that isn't called by anything and doesn't do anything but yet the program doesn't function without it. Also "default acl settings"... What the hell? I literally used the preset and I still got that error. Then I see that there are user obj permissions and user permissions, also no idea what's the difference. Anyways, now on top of not being able to make the dataset quota any bigger I don't even have access to it anymore.
Yes I've tried googling it and either I'm blinded by rage or google algorithm is garbage these days because only thing I can find is some forum text with link to another post saying "This is basic knowledge" and some linxu mumbo jumbo with no help to me at all. This used to be user friendly for people with little knowledge in linux etc. but now it seems to have changed.
Side note: My windows notepad is also broken somehow.
This shit really makes me want to move to a wilderness with no people or electricity within 100km.

2024.05.10 15:17 AsperTheDog People who want to implement an SVO, what parts are hard to understand?

I recently finished implementing my SVO engine and improving it to a point where I am happy with the results. The process was long and quite hard because I felt like the resources out there were very inaccessible (let's face it, NVIDIA's paper may be the main source for SVOs but it's horrible at explaining things sometimes, and their sample code is incredibly hard to follow).
My project doesn't have any commercial objective, I just wanted to do it for fun and maybe to build portfolio. But I do want to try to make it as accessible as possible to everyone, potentially including explanations on the more theoretical part of it (like the ray traversal, which is very complicated and full of math) to try helping people understand more easily how to build these things. I have already added comments explaining some of the more complicated parts of the code, but mainly focusing on the voxelizer algorithm.
So my question is, what do you all find harder to understand or implement about SVOs? I'll do all I can to help anyone stuck. This can also include any improvements to my repo you think would help make it more readable or useful as a learning example.
Disclaimer: My implementation is not the best out there, I get very close to the performance of the paper when it comes to ray traversal (although I use my own system which I think is way simpler) but the structure has some huge drawbacks that limit data streaming and thus the resolution it can get to). If you feel brave enough, I'll leave some other amazing SVO implementations:

2024.05.07 19:37 charlenecherylcarol I’m loosing it

So sometime late last year around my bday Reddit randomly recommended this subreddit to me. It was someone else’s post about how amazing her album and her lyrical genius and just how amazing she is. Unfortunately at time I had no idea who (or what) they were talking about. Thanks to the internet I easily found out who she was and was listening to red wine supernova and WOW did I immediately fall in love. And then I listened to her whole album. And then all her singles. The initial post I read did not exaggerate. I’ve been in love since, playing her on repeat, and recommending her to anyone that will listen.
Well I had a theory that she would be at ACL based of the last tour date on her site. Not only is she going to be there, but she’ll be there BOTH weekends. Tickets went on sale not too long ago and I got mine. Guys I’m going to see Chappell Roan live and I’m absolutely loosing it. Not only that but it’ll be on my bday weekend. I might see her ON MY BDAY. I can’t thank this subreddit and reddits algorithm enough for randomly deciding I needed to see a rave review that did not lie. My excitement can’t be contained.

2024.05.06 20:55 RedChipCompanies Oregon Therapeutics & Lantern Pharma Launch Strategic AI Collaboration to Optimize Development of First-In-Class Drug Candidate XCE853 - A Potent Inhibitor of Cancer Metabolism

Lantern Pharma Inc . (NASDAQ: LTRN), a leading artificial intelligence (AI) oncology drug discovery and development company, today announced a strategic AI-driven collaboration with French biotechnology company, Oregon Therapeutics to optimize the development of its first-in-class protein disulfide isomerase (PDI) (1) inhibitor drug candidate XCE853 in novel and targeted cancer indications. Lantern will be leveraging its proprietary RADR ® AI platform to uncover biomarkers and efficacy-associated signatures of XCE853 across solid tumors that can aid in precision development. Collaborative efforts are expected to identify biomarker signatures that can be used to stratify tumors most responsive to XCE853 and guide potential future clinical development and patient selection. Oregon Therapeutics is developing XCE853 in various cancer indications, including drug-resistant ovarian and pancreatic cancer, certain hematological cancers and several pediatric cancers including CNS cancers.
PDIs are promising targets for cancer therapy raising clinical interest recently 2 notably for their potential in cancers of poor prognosis like breast cancer 3 or ovarian cancer. Up-regulated expression of PDIs was found to be associated with worse clinical outcome in numerous cancers such as hepatocellular carcinoma (4) , as well as breast and ovarian cancers (5) . PDIs are protein chaperones and are central to maintaining cancer cell metabolism, additionally PDI inhibitors can cause cancer cell death through the accumulation of impaired proteins and dysregulated cellular stress responses. A combination of these effects is known as proteotoxicity , a unique and promising therapeutic strategy that may be especially effective in targeting cancers that are resistant to therapy.
In the US, nearly 612,000 people (6) are projected to die from cancer in 2024 and, resistance to anticancer drugs will be implicated in 90% of those deaths (7). To date, no PDI inhibitor has reached the clinic due to the complexities related to selecting and mapping the molecules that will most accurately target the right PDI enzymes. There are more than 20 PDI enzymes, with each playing a slightly different and often biologically redundant role. Oregon Therapeutic’s lead drug-candidate XCE853 is known to target PDIs of specific interest for cancer. Lantern Pharma and Oregon Therapeutics believe that computational tools, including foundational models, machine learning and large-scale molecular analysis can offer an ideal and streamlined pathway for breaking through these data and decision complexities – making RADR ® the perfect platform for better informing the role XCE853 can play in effective cancer treatment. (8, 9)
“To date, our first-in-class metabolic inhibitor, XCE853, has exhibited robust preclinical efficacy in both in vitro and in vivo models across multiple cancer types,” said Marc-Henry PITTY, MD, CEO of Oregon Therapeutics. “Lantern’s RADR ® AI platform will leverage the in vitro and in vivo data to potentially advance XCE853 development in a highly targeted manner and will help inform disease indications and biomarker signatures that can aid in the design of future clinical trials and in the pursuit of combination therapies with other approved cancer drugs. Our team is looking forward to efficiently selecting among the landscape of ideal development options and efficiently de-risking future clinical development decisions.” Oregon Therapeutics has previously performed preclinical studies indicating that in addition to ovarian and pancreatic cancer, XCE853 may also be particularly active in renal, prostate, lung, breast, and head and neck cancers, and leukemia based on preclinical cell-line studies. Oregon project leader, Sandrine Courtès PhD , who has been developing the collaboration with Lantern Pharma, stated: “ PDIs Inhibitors have a great potential, since this molecular target is highly expressed in several cancer types, supports tumor growth and is associated with clinical outcomes.
The collaboration focuses on the integration and interrogation of molecular, genetic and transcriptomic data pertaining to XCE853. This analysis will be powered by RADR ® and its growing library of over 60 billion data points from many diverse types of biological measurements and oncology experiments, as well as more than 200 ML algorithms focused on problems that are central to real-world cancer drug development. The initial objectives of the collaboration are to:
1) Uncover biomarkers and efficacy-associated gene signatures to guide in the eventual stratification and selection of patients for future clinical trials,
2) Identify tumor-based response and resistance mechanisms to XCE853 and strategies to overcome treatment resistance, and
3) Expand the use of XCE853 in additional therapeutic cancer indications for XCE853.
“Drug development teams have found significant data and modeling challenges in regard to tackling the complexities associated with PDI inhibitors given the challenges with creating meaningful models, and accumulating and deciphering the data,” said Panna Sharma, CEO and President of Lantern Pharma. “Our AI platform, RADR ® , can increase the confidence, insights, and comfort levels in developing data-driven development paths by modeling highly complex scenarios at a scale that only has become possible recently. It’s an ideal approach for Oregon Therapeutics, which has executed a series of highly targeted in vivo and in vitro experiments and is poised to make incredibly important and patient-centric decisions about the clinical future of the molecule. That's where RADR ® can play a highly essential and market defining role.”
Under the terms of the collaboration, Lantern Pharma is receiving equal IP co-ownership and drug development rights in newly discovered biomarkers, novel indications, and/or new pharmacological use strategies for XC853 and related analogues. Oregon Therapeutics is entitled to financial benefits resulting from the out licensing of the background IP to Lantern Pharma. Lantern Pharma and Oregon Therapeutics are both entitled to additional financial benefits resulting from the out licensing of any collaboration IP to a third party. No further financial details regarding the collaboration were disclosed.

Questions About Selling Authorized User Tradelines? Post Them Here.
Much controversy, opinions and facts surround the sale of authorized user tradelines. It seems that the majority of people don't even know what an authorized user tradeline actually is, neither are we saying that's a bad thing.
However, studies cited within official reports prove that over one-third of Americans are using or have used at least one authorized user tradeline. You can see this for yourself in a Federal Reserve Board report from their Finance and Economics Discussion series of papers, within a document titled Credit Where None is Due? Authorized User Account Status and ”Piggybacking Credit” which was published on March 5, 2010 (see highlighted text from page 8 of the document in the image below).
This means there should still be a large number of people who have a lot of questions about selling tradelines.

Newcomers to the world of selling tradelines or anyone interested in learning might be concerned about the safety and legality, curious about what tradelines are and how this business works, or simply want to know how much money can be made from selling tradelines.
Experienced sellers of all levels understand that things within this industry change often, mostly based around the rules and behaviors of credit card issuers (whether temporary or permanent. They seek the most up-to-date information and the direct personal experience of fellow cardholders to understand the day-to-day nuances or intricate details of getting the best performance and success from their endeavors as cardholders.
No matter which group you fall into, you're sure to have questions, issues that may arise, or a rare situation where you're looking for advice.
Since credit card companies and major credit bureaus don't posts their internal notes, unwritten rules or algorithms to the general public, it's the community of tradeline sellers as a whole who come together fill in these gaps of knowledge. Whether based on facts, logic, or a current experience, good resources and a strong community can contribute greatly to your success and understanding.
I remind you that while this community is in it's infancy, there is already abundant knowledge to be shared for those who are interested or have questions. For the time being, this post sits as a reminder that anyone and everyone is welcome to ask, answer, and contribute whatever they wish about this subject any given time. No question is too basic or complex. We only ask that you keep it on-topic and polite.
Is there something you'd like to know or understand better about the process of selling authorized user tradelines and making money from your excellent credit card history? Post it here as we continue to work on building this community.

2024.05.03 18:00 Ufnal I simmed 3 different timelines of 1956-2024 and am comparing them, AMA

(EDIT May the 7th 2024 - added a new story in the comments, about a hot potato that turned out to be a diamond)
I love procedurally created worlds and stories, so I went and generated some using BasketballGM. I ran three hands-off simulations from 1956 (earliest of the “default” start dates proposed by the game) to 2024, with 0% real player determination. That particular determination setting, I feel, was a bit of a mistake, because it makes the players’ ratings completely dependent on how their RL rookie year went – next time I’ll have to add some determination and see how it works. Initially I wanted to play around with the extracted data in Excel, but it seems to be beyond my capabilities, so instead I’m just browsing the data by hand.
I’ve been browsing the data for some time and it’s extremely fun to see the emergent stories and comparisons, so I decided to share them with you. I already have waaaayyy too much written up for a single Reddit post, so I decided to just post some snippets and then add more in the comments as I discover and write up new stuff. And of course any and all questions are welcome!
In my write-ups, I frequently use three GOAT calculations I sourced from this subreddit:
GOAT 1 – from https://www.reddit.com/BasketballGM/comments/10myg59/updated_goat_lab_based_off_jxmyhighrolle (I’m not sure whether the formula is right, with the numbers next to blocks and tppergame being 7. and 8. – which might have been intended to be 0.7 and 0.8? I can always re-run the calculations with such modifications…)
GOAT 2 – the “Combining the three above” formula from https://www.reddit.com/BasketballGM/comments/oey0m6/collection_of_some_goat_lab_formulas/
GOAT 3 – from https://www.reddit.com/BasketballGM/comments/vvdvih/comment/ifl5tho/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button
TIMELINE 1 – The Golden Pair of Knicks
New York Knicks are without a doubt the best team of the three timelines. In Timeline 3 they are the only team with a two-digit number of championships (13), as well as a record-setting 23 finals appearances (13 more than the next best team). In Timeline 2 they are tied for second best with 6 championships, but they hold the record for most playoffs appearances (52!), as well as most DPOY awards (10!) and All-Star MVPs (8!). However, Timeline 1 is a special one for the Knicks. On the one hand, they haven’t won the league since 1979. On the other hand, from 1956 to 1979 they have won the championship a record-setting 13 times, including the period of 1964-1971 when they conquered the league every single year – and between 1960 and 1971 they won 11 out of 12 championships.
Ten of those were won with two of the most dominant players in the history of NBA – Oscar Robertson and Wilt Chamberlain.
Robertson was without doubt the greatest player in the history of NBA. 11x Most Valuable Player (1961, 1962, 1964-1971, 1973 – NBA record). 11x Won Championship (1961, 1962, 1964-1971, 1979). 10x Finals MVP (1961, 1962, 1964-1971 – NBA record). 14x First Team All-League (1961, 1962, 1964-1974, 1976 – NBA record). All-Star team in all the games between 1961 and 1977 (second most in NBA history after Magic Johnson), MVP in 9 of them including the first one he played in (you guessed it – an NBA record). 6x scoring leader, 9x assists leader, 4x steals leader. Second highest career total of thrown points, whether you count combined (36,643) or only regular season (32,891). Regular season career averages: 21.5 points, 5.2 rebounds, 11.0 assists (best career assists average in NBA history). Peak season average of 33.7 PPG and 14.8 AST. When you include the playoffs, he achieved 1,104 double-doubles and 91 triple-doubles.
In terms of advanced stats, he was even more insane. A total of 420.9 Win Shares in regular season and 57.3 additional playoffs WS. Adding up playoffs and regular season: combined VORP– 242.4, average BPM – 14.9, average PER – 34.5, combined EWA – 521.9 – all of them highest of all time. His career average ORtg (combined reg + playoff) of 136.5 is the best among retired players and currently topped only by Josh Giddey who’s after his two incredible rookie seasons (2022 ROY 2023 MVP); and DRtg of 95.3 with 76.1 defensive win shares places him among the most elite defenders in the history of NBA. Career on/off of +10.6.
With GOAT 1, he gets a score of 522, over twice the score of the next best player (real world Michael Jordan gets 317 with this formula). With GOAT 2, he gets 22.9, with the next best getting 17.8. With GOAT 3, he gets 92.8, with the second best being 62.4.
And that’s with a torn ACL in 1963, which cost him the MVP award that year and the Knicks – the championship. By the way, the ACL tear took his ratings from 81/83 to 80/80… so next year he went to his peak 82/84. In 1980, at the age of 42, he was still the best dribbler in the league with a rating of 86. And make no mistake – his last few years were not very good, as he insisted on playing until he was 43, which diminished his career averages quite a lot (other than his assists, as even at 42 and scoring single-digit numbers he still averaged 7.1 AST).
I’m guessing that when he died at the ripe old age of 80, the Knicks renamed their stadium in his honor or something.
And maybe they also have something named after Wilt Chamberlain, who was Oscar Robertson’s partner in crime in the Knicks. 11x champion (they are the only two people in the history of NBA with 11 championships), 2x MVP (1960 & 1963 – one before Robertson started and one when he tore his ACL), 11x 1st team All-League (tied second best in NBA), 5x DPOY, Rookie of the Year, 11x 1st team All-Defensive (most in NBA history), 13x All-Star, lead the league in scoring 3 times, in rebounds 4 times and in blocks a whopping 8 times. With a DRtg average of 87.0 (hard to tell with pre-1956 players having 0 there, but probably the best in the history of NBA) and 85.7 DWS (third best in NBA history), as well as the third best career blocks average of 2.5 (bested only by Shawn Bradley’s 2.7 and Ben Simmons’s 2.6; also Chamberlain’s the only NBA player to average 3.5 blocks per season – and he did it thrice), he’s often considered the greatest defensive player of all time, although his detractors point out a low DPBM of 1.4.
What’s important to remember is that Wilt wasn’t only a defender – his career averages are 19.0 points, 10.0 rebounds and 1.4 assists, and his peak season of 1960 (also his rookie season, let that sink in) saw him score 35.6 points (a record that stood until 2007, when Pau Gasol beat it with his 36.2). From 1960 to 1971 he had the best FG% in the entire league. GOAT 1 gives him a score of 252 and a third place, with less than 1 point separating him from number 2, Vlade Divac; GOAT 2 has him as the number 5 GOAT candidate (17.2, with Pau Gasol at number 2 having 17.8), and GOAT 3 – as the runner up, with 62.4 and a 4 points advantage over Divac.
And let’s be clear – while starting with a 70 Ovr and going as high as 77 in his second year, from that point onward his ratings were very high, but never amazing, and from 1964 onwards his Ovr was under 70. His last All-League (Third Team) and All-Star appearance in 1972 (at the ripe old age of 36) had him at only 51 Ovr! (and yet he still managed regular season stats of 13.7 PPG, 9.0 TRB, 1.3 BLK, 0.8 STL, 9.6 WS, 2.5 VORP, 20.8 PER… Having a height of 70 and oIQ of 75 seemed to have helped.) It’s no surprise that the Knicks kept him from the 1960 draft to the retirement in 1974 and retired the number 13 after he left.
Many fans reminiscing over the Golden Decade remember primarily those two giants of basketball. However, NBA historians point out that the Knicks, as hard as it is to believe, had even more great players during this decade. To illustrate: in 1968, when the Knicks lost only 3 games in the regular season and 1 in the playoffs, Oscar Robertson was the MVP, FMVP, SFMVP and DPOY and Wilt Chamberlain was the second man behind him in the All-NBA First Team… But Kevin Loughery was there just behind them and Tom Meschery made it to All-NBA Second Team. What’s more, five Knicks made it to All-Defensive, with Robertson, Chamberlain and Nate Thurmond in the First Team, and Meschery and Dick Van Arsdale in the Third Team.
One great player of that era who is often overlooked is Kevin Loughery. An All-Rookie and All-Star with the Lakers after going undrafted, he played for the Knicks between 1965 and 1972, participating in 7 championship wins. And he did participate all right, making it to First Team All-League in 1965-1970 and Third Team in 1971, despite a torn meniscus taking him out for a few months in 1970 and lowering his Ovr from 59 to 55. Yeah, that’s right – this man was on First Team All-League in a year where he was out for 30-something games and with on Ovr of under 60 – and that year he still scored regular season stats of 17.7 PTS, 5.1 TRB, 5.8 AST, 11.4 WS, 4.7 VORP. His peak was 64 Ovr, BTW. From 1965 to 1970 he was consistently scoring between 17.7 and 20.6 per game, with ~5 rebounds and ~6 assists per game and an occasional steal. And while he was never a GOAT candidate, he is a Hall of Famer and his shirt number 21 was retired by the Knicks in recognition of the role he’d played in the Golden Decade. The Knicks respected him enough that they even re-signed him for his last season before retirement in 1975 (albeit with a different shirt number), and despite being 35 and having Ovr of 37, he still managed to average 5 points and almost 2 rebounds and 2 assists in the 8.7 minutes he played on average, giving him a VORP of 0.9. Also, one more player worth singling out was Tom Meschery, a good forward overshadowed by the Golden Duo and their third man, who nevertheless played his whole career with Knicks from 1962 to 1975, made it to the First Team All-League one time and to Second and Third All-Defensive a total of 6 times, and is worth remembering as the best free throw player of his time, leading the league in FT% in 8 seasons, with a career average of 90.2
[If you are interested how those players fared in the other timelines – let me know!]

TIMELINE 2 – Three Point Rivalry
While there are many interesting stories about Timeline 2, the one I wanted to start with is for many one of the greatest stories in 2000s NBA: the Three Point Rivalry between Peja Stojaković and Mike Miller.
Despite all our GOAT calculations giving him second place in history (GOAT 1 261, GOAT 2 18.2, GOAT 3 60.4), Peja Stojaković nevertheless has some rights to claiming the title of GOAT. He holds the NBA records for accumulated WS (regular season 328.8 + playoffs 40.0), EWA (rs 374.7 + playoffs 46.2) and VORP (rs 180.3 + playoffs 25.3). He’s also a 5x Most Valuable Player (2000-2004 – second best in the NBA), two time champion with Utah Jazz (and finals/semis MVP both times), 4x Defensive Player of the Year (2000-2003), 9x First Team All-League (1999-2004, 2006, 2009, 2011) and 13x any team All-League, 6x First Team All-Defensive (1999-2004), 15x All-Star (1999-2011, 2013, 2014), 2002 League Scoring Leader. He also had the best field goal percentage in 3 regular seasons and best free throw percentage in 7, as well as scoring the most 3-pointers in 5 regular seasons. And while his career averages of 20.2 PTS, 6.9 TRB, 5.0 AST, 1.2 STL and 0.9 BLK are not jaw-dropping, his career FT% of 94.1 (fourth best in NBA history) and career TS% of 61.2 are nothing to sneeze at.
However there are NBA fans who, hearing his name, think at first not of all those accolades and accomplishments, but of his Three Point Contest shenanigans and the legendary rivalry that resulted. Peja won four contests between 2000 and 2005, tying with Dennis Scott’s record for the most wins. When Miller got his fourth win in 2010, beating Stojaković in a tie breaker, Stojaković beat him in 2011 setting a new record. After a near loss to Damon Jones in 2012, Miller earned his 5th win in 2013, when Stojaković was injured and unable to participate. After Stojaković narrowly lost to Donté Greene in 2014, Miller set a new world record in 2015. Stojaković (by the time a Minnesota player, like Miller was when he got his first win in 2003) couldn’t let it stand, and after losing by 1 shot to Greene in 2016 managed to win the 2017 contest and tie Miller’s 6 win record. Miller retired in 2017, and Stojaković, after unsuccessfully trying to one last time beat the record in 2020 (he was bested by the 2018-2020 winner Álex Abrines), retired too.
While Mike Miller isn’t a clear GOAT candidate like his rival, his career is still among the most impressive in NBA history. A Houston loyalist after initial 3 seasons in Minnesota, Miller won only 1 championship, but he’s a 4x MVP, 3x SFMVP, 2x ASMVP, one time SMOTY and ROTY, 12x All-Leaguer (including 9x First Team), 4x All-Defender, 12x All-Star and 3x NBA Scoring Leader, with a personal record of 63 points scored in a single match. He also captained the All-Star team 5 times (to Stojaković’s 4, which he keeps jokingly referencing in interviews). Miller had the highest 3Pt rating in the league for 9 seasons (compared to Stojaković’s 8 seasons of leading that rating), and highest 2Pt rating for an impossible-sounding 15 seasons. With a career average of 23.0 PTS, 6.0 TRB, 5.3 AST, 1.1 STL, 0.6 BLK, 27.7 PER and 254.9 Win Shares in regular seasons, and a VORP of 151.5 second only to Stojaković’s, GOAT 1 205 (9th), GOAT 2 16.7 (4th) and GOAT 3 50.4 (10th), Miller is unquestionably among the all-time greats.
[Again – if you are interested how those players fared in the other timelines – let me know!]

TIMELINE 3 – The Best of the 21st
Between 2006 and 2015, NBA of Timeline 3 was dominated by two 2003 draft alumni – Carmelo Anthony of the Milwaukee Bucks (apart from 2006 when he played for the Minnesota Timberwolves) and LeBron James of the San Antonio Spurs. And while which one of them’s superior is one of the most hotly debated subjects in modern basketball, there are reasons to give Anthony a slight edge. A career WS sum of 337.9 in regular seasons (third best in history), 5 MVP titles (tied second best with LeBron), 9 time league scoring leader (which makes him the most dominant scorer since Rick Barry), NBA career record for points scored per RS match at 30.3 (30.8 when including the playoffs), second best FGM career average in NBA history at 10.0 (and if you include the playoffs, he’s THE best at 10.1), the only player besides Barry to have 3 seasons with PTS average over 37. As a result, he’s widely considered the best scorer of the modern era.
Anthony’s not only about shooting, though – 8.4 career TRB and 5.7 career AST in regular seasons, as well as average PER of 31.9 and total EWA of 470.7 (second only to Barry) are also tremendous achievements, although interestingly his WS/48 is “only” 0.287. And he’s got other accolades to boot – from his 13 consecutive First Team All-League appearances (2006-2018) to 18 All-Star appearances (2004-2021) including 6 ASMVP titles (second best in history) and 11 captainships (with 5 against teams captained by LeBron, with a record of 3:2 for the Eastern Conference), to two championship wins more than a decade apart (2007 with MIL, 2018 with ORL) with FMVP and SFMVP awards in each of those seasons. GOAT 1 puts him at 292 (third best), GOAT 2 at 20.5 (second best) and GOAT 3 at 69.3 (second best). And from a game ratings perspective, he spent 11 years at 80 Ovr or over, 5 seasons being the best player in the league, 8 seasons of being the strongest (>90) and a rating of 100 in Ins in 2009. 2009 was the year when only his height rating was under 70, and his Ovr reached 87. As a result, most commentators agree Carmelo Anthony is the best basketball player of modern times.
Some, however, still insist on putting LeBron James on top. Most GOAT algorithms see James as top 5 player of all time, but always slightly less successful than his rival –GOAT 1 281 (4th place, 11 less than Anthony) GOAT 2 18.8 (4th place, 1.7 less than Anthony) and GOAT 3 69.0 (3rd place, 0.3 less than Anthony). James was also less successful in the league, having never won a championship (he’s widely considered the best player in history never to wear a ring).
However, his 5 MVP awards are supported by 5 DPOY awards (including 4 years when he won both), his 11 First Team All-League appearances – by 10 First Team All-Defensive appearances, he won the Slam Dunk Contest 3 times, led the league in scoring 2 times, in assists 2 times, in steals 6 times, and in blocks – 3 times; and in 2011 he won MVP, DPOY, First Team in both League and Defensive, as well as being the leader in scoring, steals AND blocks and winning the SDC (and his San Antonio Spurs still lost 2-4 in the first round of the playoffs to JaVale McGee’s Golden State Warriors…). LeBron James has also achieved the most career regular season DDs in NBA history at 834, second most TDs at 195, and a record-setting 9 5x5s. And in the playoffs he managed 4 more 5x5s as well as the only Quadruple Double in NBA history! He holds the 1st to 4th places in NBA history in most VORP and BPM in a regular season, having the second best career average in both of those statistics, as well as 4th best regular season win shares total of 315.9 and the NBA record for season average of both OBPM and DBPM. While his averages were lowered by a relatively weak rookie season and a weaker final season where he only started 11 games, he still achieved regular season career averages of 25.2 PTS, 7.6 TRB, 9.4 AST, 1.8 STL and 1.6 BLK. As a result, the argument is often made that why Anthony was the better scorer and shooter, LeBron was the ultimate complete package and the best all-round basketball player of the modern era.
[And right now, Kevin Durant is sometimes perceived as someone who can overshadow both of their legacies… But that’s another story.]

Rick Barry, The Best of Two Timelines
In Timeline 1, Rick Barry narrowly missed out on Hall of Fame despite a career total of 105.3 WS. A fan favourite 7 time All-Star, he won Rookie of the Year in 1966, a championship in 1977 with the Washington Bullets (although he only played an average 3.8 minutes in the playoffs, averaging 1.3 points and 1.5 rebounds), had three All-League and one All-Defensive appearance, with a career regular season average of 14.2 points, 5.2 rebounds, 1.6 assists, 1.3 steals and noteworthy 99.2 DRtg. Respectable, but not even close to what he achieved in other timelines…
With GOAT 1 297, GOAT 2 19.6 and GOAT 3 65.8, Rick Barry was clearly the best player of Timeline 2 (although, as explained above, some Peja Stojaković fans might argue to the contrary). 7x Most Valuable Player (1969, 1971-1975, 1978 – NBA record), 3x Finals MVP, 4x Champion (1966, 1968-1969 with Baltimore and 1974 with Cleveland), 11x First Team All-League (1967-1976, 1978 – tied for most with Bob Cousy), 5x First Team All-Defensive (1967-1969, 1971, 1973), 17x All-Star (1966-1982 – one less than Bob Cousy’s record) – all of those accolades speak for themselves. He managed a combined 428 DD and 16 TD in regular seasons and playoffs, he was the league leader in free throw accuracy 13 times (with a career FT% of 94.5 – still an unbeaten NBA record), and has a second best carrer WS sum of all time at 317 reg. seas., 364.3 with playoffs (as well as second best WS/48 among starters - 0.344), as well as third best average career PER at 30.3. His career regular season average of 23.2 PPG, 7.5 TRB, 4.4 AST, 1.7 STL, 131.5 ORtg and 97.7 DRtg is very respectable and overall there’s no doubt he is a player that will be forever enshrined in the annals of Timeline 2’s basketball history.
However, that was not even his final form.
Timeline 3. GOAT 1 350, 1st place (with 51 points over 2nd). GOAT 2: 22.0, 1st place (with 1.5 points over 2nd). GOAT 3: 80.0, 1st place (with 10.7 points over 2nd place). 461 career WS in regular seasons, over 100 more than anybody else. 563.3 career EWA, nearly 150 over anybody else. 9 league MVP titles, 4 more than anybody else. Whichever way you slice it, Rick Barry is the GOAT of Sim 3, despite only winning 2 championships in his 23 years of career.
Let’s let his accolades speak for themselves: 20x All-Star (league record) including 4x ASMVP, 16x All-League (14 of which as First Team – more than anybody else), 12x All-Defensive (11 of those as First Team – more than anybody else), 5x DPOY (tied for most in history with LeBron James), 11x League Scoring Leader (1967-1977 – more times than anybody else), 10x League Steals Leader (…yeah, you guessed it). Career regular season averages: 26.8 PTS (5th best), 8.0 TRB, 4.8 AST, 2.2 STL (best of all time), 0.6 BLK. 625 DDs and 53 TDs. Between 1967 and 1977, he led the league in average reg. season WS 10 times, in VORP 9 times, in BPM 8 times, in PER and EWA 10 times, in TS% - 7 times. He holds the record of best average PTS in a regular season, having scored an average of 38.1 points per game in 1968 (and until 2007 he was the only person to have scored an average of over 36.5 in a season – and so far only Carmelo Anthony has managed to also achieve that feat 3 times). His record of most points scored in a regular season game is 66 (which was only surpassed by Kevin Durant and equaled by Carmelo Anthony and Glen Robinson) and he had at least one 50 point game in 11 seasons. When we include the playoffs, he holds the record for most points ever scored in a game, with 70 points. His records for most steals in a game – 10 in the regular season, 11 in the playoffs – are both in NBA’s top 3. He’s one of only two people in the league to score over 50,000 points in all his NBA matches (regular + playoffs) as well as one of only two people to perform over 15,000 rebounds in all of his matches and the only person to surpass 4000 steals total (and one of only 2 people to surpass 3000). He holds the record for most total field goals made and attempted, as well as most total free throws made. He’s played 64,098.2 minutes in playoffs and regular season combined, the most anyone ever did, and he’s one of only 3 people to surpass 60,000 minutes.
And all of that despite only reaching an Ovr of 80 for one season in 1975 – although to be fair, he spent the time from 1967 to 1980 with >70 Ovr, and for 11 of those years he had the league’s highest Ovr.

I think that’s enough for the first post. Want to read more? Tell me!

🌈 And in this land of hope, plant factories not only redefine "cultivation" but also open up endless imagination for environmentally friendly and efficient agricultural models. Amidst skyscrapers, they are writing a new chapter that emphasizes both green ideals and profits!

Current Crisis

The United Nations predicts that the global population will approach 10 billion by the year 2050, which will result in an overall 50% increase in food demand[1]. Meanwhile, human civilization faces numerous challenges, one of which is the impact of climate change on agriculture. Global warming is altering weather patterns, leading to increased heatwaves, droughts, floods, and extreme weather events. Elevated temperatures accelerate evapotranspiration of plants and soils, adversely affecting crop growth. Additionally, threats such as reduced water supply and increased pests and diseases pose risks to agricultural production[1].
Simultaneously, the available land area for cultivation is decreasing. Scientific analysis reveals that approximately 33% of soils have been degraded due to human-induced land use practices, including erosion, salinization, and nutrient depletion. This diminishes soil productivity[2]. Farmers are forced to abandon degraded lands and cultivate new areas for planting or grazing. It is predicted that by 2050, human civilization could lose an additional 400 million hectares of natural habitat, equivalent to twice the size of Mexico[3]. These challenges significantly impact global food security. Declining crop yields will push more people into poverty, especially in areas already facing food insecurity. It is estimated that by 2030, approximately 43 million people in Africa alone could fall below the poverty line due to these factors[1].
All signs point to the need for humanity to reduce dependence on weather and take greater control of the process of independently producing food.

Origins

Actually, since ancient times, humans have always hoped to reduce agriculture's reliance on weather conditions and achieve greater control over food production. In China, explorations and practices of controlling crop growth environments through artificial means began early. As far back as the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period, a facility called 'yingjian' appeared. According to 'The Annals of Lv Buwei • Mid-Summer Chronicles, Volume Five,' 'yingjian' involved burning mulberry branches and leaves in winter to generate heat and maintain the temperature required for crop growth[4].
During the Han Dynasty, designs like 'wenpu' emerged in cold regions, utilizing piled-up cow dung to create warm beds, enabling vegetable production through winter[5]. The Ming Dynasty scientist Xu Guangqi also mentioned the structure of 'nuanwu' in his 'Complete Book of Agricultural Administration,' which enclosed space to cultivate vegetables with a greenhouse effect[6]. In the Western world, relevant records can be traced back to the Roman era; at that time, noble caretakers would move portable vegetable beds outdoors in good weather and indoors during inclement weather. When sunlight was abundant in winter, they covered the planting beds with transparent quartz and placed them outdoors[8].
Modern greenhouse-like structures resembling today's were not seen in Europe and America until around 1670, but they still relied on translucent oiled paper or glass to allow sunlight, limiting environmental control. In 1889, Liberty Hyde Bailey conducted the first experiment with artificial lighting for greenhouse planting at Cornell University, known as 'Electro-culture'[7], only about a decade after the invention of the incandescent lamp, which limited its economic feasibility. Subsequent experiments on controlled human planting were conducted, and in 1964, Emmert, an agricultural engineer at the University of California, Davis, used the term 'Controlled Environment Agriculture'[9].
In the 1970s, as controlled environment agriculture was applied in greenhouses and factory farming, the concept was further developed. In 1971, American scholar Tibbitts published a paper systematically discussing plant growth responses to environmental factors, advocating for optimizing crop production under controlled conditions[10]. Starting in the 1980s, NASA conducted a series of studies to produce food for astronauts in space; the findings concluded that agriculturally controlled environments could yield higher and more nutritious crops than traditional methods[11][12]. Against the backdrop of humanity's pursuit of highly controllable and customized agricultural environments, academia and industry have developed new subcategories and expanded concepts. The terms 'Plant Factory' and 'Vertical Farming' have emerged to denote the same concept in different ways[13].
In 1999, when Professor Dickson Despommier of Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health, along with 105 graduate students, delved deep into exploring the negative effects of agriculture, they collectively conceived the innovative concept of 'vertical farms'. These farms are multi-story buildings where different crops can be grown on each level. Crops in vertical farms can be cultivated in various ways: hydroponically, where plant roots are directly immersed in nutrient-rich water; aeroponically, by spraying nutrient solution onto plant roots; or through aquaponics, where fish farming provides nutrients for plants using fish excrement. Of course, if the building design allows, traditional soil-based cultivation methods can also be used[14].
After decades of technological development, the field of plant factories reached its modern pinnacle in 2011 with AeroFarms. Located in Newark, New Jersey, AeroFarms covers 70,000 square feet and is an indoor vertical farm founded by Professor Ed Harwood from Cornell University, along with David Rosenberg and Marc Oshima. In this modern farm, rows of propagation tables are filled with leafy greens such as arugula, watercress, and bok choy, stacked up to the ceiling. All operations inside the farm are precisely controlled by computers. AeroFarms employs its patented aeroponic technology, using only 5% of the water used in traditional agriculture. From air temperature and humidity to carbon dioxide concentration, LED light intensity, and optimal moisture levels, everything is managed automatically. Biologists and botanists can monitor real-time growth data of each plant around the clock through onsite technology or mobile applications. Compared to traditional agriculture, AeroFarms achieves yields up to 400 times per square foot[15].

Prospects

As a modern agricultural production system, plant factories utilize enclosed structures and artificial lighting to provide the necessary light energy for plants, using techniques such as hydroponics or substrate cultivation for plant growth. By combining advanced technologies and control methods to simulate and optimize plant growth conditions indoors or in semi-indoor environments, plant factories achieve efficient and sustainable plant production[13].
Through vertical and stacked planting methods, plant factories maximize the use of limited space and provide precise environmental control for crop cultivation, including temperature, humidity, light intensity, gas composition, and nutrient supply, to meet the growth requirements of plants[16][17]. The significance of plant factories lies in achieving food production independent of weather, enabling human society to truly control harvests autonomously. Compared to greenhouses, plant factories use closed, insulated building structures, whereas greenhouses are often constructed using semi-transparent, heat-dissipating materials. Greenhouses rely on sunlight for cultivating various plants and are still significantly influenced by daylight seasons. In contrast to the strict environmental control of plant factories, greenhouses have more lenient climate parameter adjustments[18].
In addition to AeroFarms mentioned earlier, many other plant factory companies continue to advance technologically:
In China, both industry and academia boast leaders in the field of plant factories:

Reality Gravity Opening the Gates of Hell

Although various research units at home and abroad often make new technological advancements, the promotion of plant factories faces multiple challenges. Firstly, there is the issue of high costs associated with plant factories, which is reflected not only in the initial construction and maintenance technology investments but also in the economic viability of commercial production. As a pioneer in the field, AeroFarms projected revenue for 2021 was only $4 million, with a staggering loss of $39 million. In fact, in June 2023, AeroFarms filed for bankruptcy protection and completed restructuring on September 18 of last year.
Another typical case is AppHarvest, whose product features a mix of natural and artificial lighting along with a rainwater collection system to achieve yields up to 30 times higher than traditional agriculture. However, according to the latest data, AppHarvest's stock price is only $0.0666 per share, with both its trailing twelve months (TTM) earnings per share and dividends (TTM) showing losses, and a price-to-book ratio (P/B) of only 0.04. The company's earnings per share are -$1.16, and its net asset value per share is $1.73, with negative free cash flow for several consecutive quarters. Additionally, AppHarvest has faced investor lawsuits, alleging misleading statements about the company's operational feasibility to investors. The company had to file for bankruptcy protection to support financial and operational restructuring, a decision that further drove down its stock price. Despite successfully raising $50 million in financing in 2022 and receiving considerable funding from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the declining trends in its liquidity ratio, quick ratio, net asset return ratio, and total asset return ratio still reveal issues with its short-term debt-paying ability and profitability.
Furthermore, other companies also face challenges:
These problems can be attributed to three main reasons:
  1. High Initial Investment: The construction and installation of plant factories require expensive steel structures, sophisticated artificial lighting, efficient air conditioning equipment, high-quality insulation materials, and a series of sensors and automation systems for environmental monitoring and control. According to iFarm, a U.S. plant factory equipment supplier from the industry, the construction cost per square meter of planting bed space for plant factories ranges from $2,200 to $2,600, while the cost for high-tech greenhouses ranges from $250 to $350 per square meter.
  2. Ongoing Operational Costs: In addition to hardware costs, plant factories require professional maintenance by technical personnel and energy consumption to maintain a constant environment, which constitutes ongoing operational costs. As mentioned earlier, the highly energy-efficient plant factory of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences is one of the few that can achieve a level of 10 kWh/kg. Most units, as estimated by Harbick, consume energy at a rate of 19 to 23 kWh/kg when growing lettuce. From an environmental perspective, according to research from Cornell University in the United States, the carbon footprint indirectly generated by plant factories' electricity consumption is 10 times that of traditional agriculture. Additionally, the cost of indoor cultivation is more than twice that of outdoor cultivation and transportation to cities in the Midwest. As Professor Graamans' team calculated, although plant factories achieve a production area yield 2.5 times higher than greenhouses, their energy consumption yield ratio is more than 4 times higher.
  3. Mismatch Between Business Output and Costs: Currently, plant factories mainly commercially produce some common leafy vegetables, which have relatively low market value and struggle to economically support the high-tech investments and operational costs of plant factories. For example, a lettuce plant factory at Osaka Prefecture University can produce up to 5,000 lettuce plants per day, consuming 3,616 MWh annually. From an investment return perspective, even though the plant factory produces 5,000 lettuce plants per day, yielding approximately 750 tons of lettuce annually and selling at double the wholesale price in Japan, the revenue is only about 5 million RMB, meaning that the electricity cost alone exceeds the annual profit and severely limits the economic feasibility of plant factories. Many companies invest in automation and AI technology to reduce costs, but research and development costs are expensive, and the market return cycle is long. Investors misunderstand the economic benefits and technological potential of indoor agriculture, leading to expectations of quick returns that do not align with the reality of agricultural economics.

New Hope: Interdisciplinary Approach

Furthermore, as a product itself, a plant factory needs to demonstrate its value in the market to garner more support. The acceptance of a plant factory product in the market faces several challenges. When discussing this field with friends, they often ask, "How do you prove that vegetables produced in a plant factory are safe and healthy?" and "How do you demonstrate that plants produced in a plant factory are superior to those produced by traditional agriculture?"
After addressing the quality issues of vegetable production, market positioning also needs to be considered. Specifically, when building a plant factory, is it intended to compete with farmers or to provide farmers with new tools? If the former, given the principle that food is essential, why should vegetables produced by a plant factory be priced higher, of unknown origin, and nutritionally deficient? If the latter, what do farmers gain from investing heavily in a plant factory — a long return period or a more straightforward planting experience? These questions are currently unresolved in the plant factory field.
In fact, when exploring the teams behind plant factory enterprises, one often discovers that although the construction and operation of plant factories require knowledge across multiple fields including agriculture, architecture, materials, energy, and automation control, previous talent recruitment for plant factories has been primarily focused on agricultural technology, with outsourcing being the norm for optimizing construction, materials, energy efficiency, and control systems. On the other hand, even when convening a multidisciplinary team, many biological and physical phenomena within a plant factory are intricately interconnected. In fact, when constructing a plant factory, it is crucial to handle internal and external physical coupling issues properly because these directly affect the plant growth environment and factory energy efficiency.
Internal coupling issues primarily include:
  1. Interaction between temperature, humidity, and airflow: The efficiency of air conditioning system exhaust and supply determines energy consumption. Therefore, a delicate balance must be achieved through precise energy management and aerodynamic design.
  2. Impact of LED lighting: LED light sources not only provide necessary illumination but also affect temperature due to their heat dissipation effect. Optimizing light energy utilization and achieving light-temperature linkage are key technological challenges.
  3. Influence of plant transpiration: Plant transpiration alters humidity and temperature in the surrounding environment, especially when canopy structures expand, demanding higher requirements for airflow distribution. When designing, dynamic correlations between plants and environmental parameters must be fully considered to ensure uniform and stable conditions.
  4. Application of optimization algorithms: Integrating data management with environmental control systems to continuously optimize control strategies for light, temperature, water, and air elements.
  5. Real-time monitoring of plant growth: Modern agriculture seeks precise tracking of plant growth status and real-time adjustment of management measures to ensure optimal environmental conditions at each growth stage. However, the higher the requirements, the higher the cost of plant factories themselves, including maintaining temperature and humidity conditions.
External coupling issues also pose numerous challenges:
  1. Interaction between enclosure structure and outdoor climate: Designing a rational enclosure structure maximizes natural advantages while mitigating adverse weather effects on the internal environment, which is the core of light-temperature structure design.
  2. Utilization of outdoor CO2 resources: Efficiently introducing and utilizing outdoor CO2 as a gas source for plant growth, achieving a clever linkage between air and CO2.
  3. Effective use of solar energy: Fully leveraging solar radiation for illumination and converting it into electricity for plant factory use to achieve a complementary effect of light and electricity.
These aforementioned primary coupling issues can be further refined into at least two sub-problems, covering the design of efficient ventilation systems, balanced maintenance of environmental temperature and humidity, optimization and upgrading of LED lighting systems, management and regulation of heat output, optimization strategies for water supply, adaptability design of ventilation systems, integrated optimization of real-time data collection and environmental control, synchronous updates of optimization algorithms and adjustment of environmental parameters, real-time monitoring technology of plant growth status, adjustment strategies for nutrient and water supply, design and optimization of enclosure structures, effective measures to reduce climate impact, efficient introduction of outdoor CO2 and its supply-demand regulation, improvement of solar energy collection and conversion efficiency, and integration of electrical systems, among many specific directions.
Therefore, if each expert in the team only seeks the optimal solution within their own field, the superposition of everyone's solutions cannot guarantee that it is the optimal solution for the plant factory itself. This indicates that only by comprehensively considering and deeply integrating all relevant factors can humanity have the opportunity to explore and approach the optimal performance of this complex system.

Conclusion

In the vast expanse of human civilization amidst the surging waves of food demand and the dual challenge of climate change, a magnificent adventure about food self-sufficiency is unfolding. This article takes us through the intersection of history and the future, witnessing a green revolution from ancient times to the present, from theory to practice.
From the ancient "yingjian" technique of the Spring and Autumn Period to today's AeroFarms' LED photosynthesis symphony, humanity, with wisdom and creativity, has gradually unlocked nature's code, liberating agriculture from the constraints of the earth, and elevating it into a green fantasy within cities. This is not just a conquest of space but also a transcendence of time, allowing plants to dance in the vertical dimension, blooming in light and shadow.
On this path of conquering "hell"—the balance of commercial models and cost-effectiveness—we see challenges, yet we also capture sparks of hope. The pure declaration of Nuvege, the light magic of PlantLab—each name represents a legend, standing tall amidst skepticism, flourishing in adversity, demonstrating the immortal power of innovation and resilience.
And for those temporarily fallen warriors, like Fifth Season and IronOx, although their explorations were not perfect, they illuminated the path for those who follow, reminding us to seek that delicate balance point in the fusion of technology and nature—efficient yet environmentally friendly, economic yet sustainable.
Ultimately, the story of plant factories and vertical agriculture is a symphony of poetry about dreams and reality. It teaches us that even in the face of challenges akin to "hell," we should continue this green romantic voyage with a graceful posture, carrying an infinite longing for the future. Because we believe that in the harmonious resonance of technology and nature, a new agricultural era will emerge—one that nourishes humanity while nurturing the Earth. 🚀🌿🌟

Posting a random Steeler every day until kickoff or I forget - Day 61: Carey Davis
FB Carey Davis (2007-2009)
Carey was signed by the Indianapolis Colts as an Undrafted Free Agent out of Illinois after the 2004 NFL Draft. After spending a brief period on their active roster, he then spent time with the Atlanta Falcons, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Miami Dolphins, but did not see the field.
He signed a contract with the Steelers in January 2007, and on September 2007, he was named the Week 1 starter over Dan Kreider. The two of them went on to share the role throughout the season until Kreider suffered a torn ACL against the Miami Dolphins on Monday Night Football. Davis continued to start, and eventually took some snaps at halfback with Najeh Davenport after Willie Parker was injured in Week 16. That season, he played in 16 games, rushing 17 times for 68 yards and also led the team in special teams tackles.
In 2008, the Steelers began to go to a more pass-oriented offense, limiting his production. By midseason, he was replaced at fullback by Sean McHugh. In August 2010, Davis signed with the Washington Redskins after an injury to Mike Sellers but was then released in September.
After retirement, Davis began doing sideline reporting for Illinois football broadcast, and in 2022, became a permanent co-host at 101 ESPN in St. Louis on the station’s morning show called “The Opening Drive,” and then moved on to co-hosting “The Fast Lane” in 2024. In addition to his broadcast career, he also coaches high school football.
