Today illustrated that the Democrats have become America’s cheerleaders, emphasizing how investment in the nation’s infrastructure has created jobs and rebuilt the country. This week, the Biden-Harris administration is touting its investments in rebuilding roads and bridges, making sure Americans have clean water, getting rid of pollution, expanding access to high-speed internet, and building a clean energy economy, contrasting that success with Trump’s eternal announcements of an “Infrastructure Week” that never came.
The White House today announced that it has awarded nearly $454 billion in funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, including more than 56,000 projects across more than 4,500 communities across the nation. Those include fixing more than 165,000 miles of roads and more than 9,400 bridges and improving more than 450 ports and 300 airport terminals. It has funded more than 1,400 drinking water and wastewater projects and projects to replace up to 1.7 million toxic lead pipes, as well as more than 8,000 low- and zero-emission buses. It has funded 95 previously unfunded Superfund projects to clean up contaminated sites. It has improved the electrical grid and funded 12,000 miles of high-speed internet infrastructure, and exposed internet junk fees.
The White House explained that this investment is making it cheaper to install clean energy technology and lowering families’ monthly energy bills, and highlighted today the available rebates to enable people to take advantage of the new technologies.
On Wednesday, May 8, a report from the Semiconductor Industry Association and the Boston Consulting Group explored the “breathtaking speed,” as the president of the semiconductor organization put it, at which the industry is growing. In the Financial Times on May 9, John Thornhill reported that the CHIPS and Science Act, which provided a $39 billion investment in the semiconductor industry, has “primed a torrent of private sector investment.” With the influx of both federal money and an additional $447 billion of private investment in 83 projects in 25 states, the report forecasts that the U.S. will increase its share of global manufacturing capacity for leading-edge chips from today’s rate of 0% to 28% by 2032. Thornhill compared this investment to that spurred by Russia’s 1957 launch of the Sputnik satellite.
The Economist yesterday announced that the U.S. “is in the midst of an extraordinary startup boom,” and explored “[h]ow the country revived its “go-getting spirit.”
In contrast to the Democrats’ confidence in America, the Republicans are all-in on the idea that the country is an apocalyptic wasteland. At a rally in New Jersey Saturday, Trump announced: “On day one we will throw out Bidenomics and reinstate MAGAnomics.” He promised to extend his 2017 tax cuts for the wealthy and corporations.
But the gist of his speech was an angry, vitriolic picture of a failing nation full of “enemies” that are “more dangerous” than China and Russia and who are “going to destroy our country.” In his telling, the criminal case against him in Manhattan is “bullsh*t,” and President Biden has done more damage than the “ten worst presidents in the history of our country” combined: “[h]e’s a fool; he’s not a smart man…[h]e’s a bad guy…the worst president ever, of any country. The whole world is laughing at him.”
Trump lied that other countries are “emptying out their mental institutions into the United States, our beautiful country. And now the prison populations all over the world are down. They don’t want to report that the mental-institution population is down because they’re taking people from insane asylums and from mental institutions.” Then he riffed into “the late great Hannibal Lecter,” the fictional murderer and cannibal in the film The Silence of the Lambs, apparently to suggest that similar individuals are migrating to the U.S.
House Republicans this week are working to pass a nonbinding resolution to condemn Biden’s immigration policies, although it was Republicans, under orders from Trump, who killed a strong bipartisan immigration bill earlier this year.
The only way to turn back this apocalypse, Trump and his supporters insist, is to put Trump and his team back into the White House. From there, Republicans will return those they consider “real” Americans to power.
The last few days have added new information about what that means. On Thursday, May 9, Senators Katie Britt (R-AL), Marco Rubio (R-FL), and Kevin Cramer (R-ND) introduced the More Opportunities for Moms to Succeed (MOMS) act. Britt—who is best known for her disastrous response to Biden’s State of the Union speech from her kitchen—said the measure would provide a federal database of resources for pregnant women and women parenting young children, but that information excludes anything that touches on abortion.
The measure is clear that it enlists the government in opposition to abortion, but more than that, it establishes that the government will create a database of the names and contact information of pregnant women, which the government can then use “to follow up with users on additional resources that would be helpful for the users to review.”
A government database of pregnant women would give the federal government unprecedented control over individuals, and it is especially chilling after the story Caroline Kitchener broke in the Washington Post on May 3, that a Texas man, Collin Davis, filed a petition to stop his ex-partner from traveling to Colorado, where abortion is legal, to obtain an abortion. Should she do so, his lawyer wrote, he would “pursue wrongful-death claims against anyone involved in the killing of his unborn child.” Now Davis wants to be able to depose his former partner along with others he says are “complicit” in the abortion.
Antiabortion activists are also seeking to make mifepristone and misoprostol, drugs used in many abortions, hard to obtain. In Louisiana, state lawmakers are considering classifying the drugs as “controlled dangerous substances,” which would make possessing them carry penalties of up to ten years in prison and fines of up to $75,000.
More than 240 Louisiana doctors wrote to lawmakers saying that the drugs have none of the addictive characteristics associated with dangerous controlled substances and warning that the drugs are crucial for inducing routine labor and preventing catastrophic hemorrhage after delivery, in addition to their use in abortions. “Given its historically poor maternal health outcomes, Louisiana should prioritize safe and evidence-based care for pregnant women,” the doctors wrote.
Louisiana lawmakers also rejected a bill that would have allowed anyone under age 17, the age of consent in Louisiana, to have an abortion if they became pregnant after rape or incest. Passionate testimony from those who suffered such attacks or who treated pregnant girls as young as 8 failed to convince the Republican lawmakers to support the measure. “That baby [in the womb] is innocent.… We have to hang on to that,” said Republican state representative Dodie Horton.
Today, at the Asian Pacific American Institute for Congressional Studies, a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization promoting Asian American and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander participation and representation at all levels of the political process, Vice President Kamala Harris encouraged young people to innovate and to move into spaces from which they have been traditionally excluded.
“So here’s the thing about breaking barriers,” she said. “Breaking barriers does not mean you start on one side of the barrier and you end up on the other side. There’s breaking involved. And when you break things you get cut. And you may bleed. And it is worth it every time…. We have to know that sometimes people will open the door for you and leave it open. Sometimes they won’t. And then you need to kick that f*cking door down.”
Harris’s advice reflects the history that happened on this date in 1862, when the enslaved mariners on board the shallow-draft C.S.S. Planter gathered up their families, fired up the ship’s boilers, and sailed out of the Charleston, South Carolina, harbor. The three white officers of the ship had gone ashore, leaving enslaved 23-year-old pilot Robert Smalls to take control. Smalls knew how to steer the ship and give the proper signals to the Confederates at Fort Sumter, Fort Moultrie, and three other checkpoints.
Smalls piloted the Planter, the sixteen formerly enslaved people on it, and a head full of intelligence about the Confederate fortifications at Charleston to the U.S. Navy. In Confederate hands, the Planter had surveyed waterways and laid mines; now that information was in U.S. hands. Smalls went on to pilot naval vessels during the war, and in 1864 he bought the house formerly owned by the man who had enslaved him.
A natural leader, Smalls went on to become a businessman, politician, and strong advocate for education. After serving in the 1868 South Carolina Constitutional Convention that made school attendance compulsory and provided for universal male suffrage, he went on to serve in the South Carolina legislature from 1868 to 1874, when he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, where he served until 1887. When President Barack Obama signed an executive order establishing the nation’s first national monument concerning Reconstruction, he cited the life of Robert Smalls.

2024.05.14 16:24 24thWanderer Anyone have experiences with sober living houses?

35, male. I've had an issue with alcohol for a while. Never made attempts to quit until this year. Taken a lot of steps to work at this: shying away from those who don't support my recovery, completed an intensive outpatient rehab group, moved out of last place with alcoholic roommates. But this last place has not worked well. Seems liked everyone abuses drugs and alcohol now. Not quite in a position to get my own place again as I am finishing up paying off some debt. Tired of these dumb situations living with others so I want to my own place again. Gonna take some time before I can do that.
Long story short, the place where I am not is NOT conducive to my recovery in the slightest. I need to get away from the people I live with now and I'm limited on options. Some contacts from the IOP (they were great and continue to be great) got me in touch with a Level 2 house and helped me jump in up priority on the waitlist. So it is an option. But I'm wondering if I will be able to manage. As an adult in his 30s, I'm used to having autonomy. Sharing a space with a bunch of other men, curfew, searches and all the other stuff that come from living in a place like this don't sound appealing in the slightest. But I am willing to consider any option for the sake of my recovery. I've heard some people from my IOP claim they got a lot of out of it.
So I'm looking to hear some testimonial from others who have done this. I understand each house is different. Just wanted to get your takeaways and whether you thought it helped or nor. I gotta figure something out here soon. Thanks in advance for any serious replies.

2024.05.14 16:04 emilymh99 First pregnancy..help

On April 17th I took a pregnancy test which cane back positive (this was a Wednesday), the weekend before I took one it came back negative. For the first 2ish weeks my breasts and nipples were very tender and swollen, then I started spotting brown. The breast tenderness went away upon the beginning of spotting. I had a pelvic exam this past Friday (5/10) and my cervix appeared closed. My original 8 weeks appointment was supposed to be 5/15 but I went yesterday 5/13 instead. On the scan all that was shown was a 7.5mm sac with a yolk, no embryo and because of the spotting the doctor told me either it’s too early or theres a miscarriage. My HCG level was 3995 and they dated me at 5 weeks 4 days. I haven’t had enough spotting for a pad or any bright red but this is day number 9 of spotting and my pregnancy symptoms are pretty much gone (tiredness and tender breasts). Does anyone have any similar experiences and it turned out positive…? I have my next scan June 5th and Im a nervous wreck.

2024.05.14 16:03 novaleenationstate Medical malpractice suit over miscarriage complications?

A little over a year ago, I was diagnosed with a molar pregnancy and told that the pregnancy was not viable. I was in between PCP providers (had relocated recently), but was referred to someone who diagnosed the molar pregnancy,l and then referred me to a different OBGYN who they claimed had more experience with molars, and who would be better able to perform the D&C. That specialist couldn’t fit me in for a couple of weeks, so I had to wait.
When they finally did perform the D&C, it was about 3 weeks after the initial molar diagnosis (and about a 5 weeks after I’d first seen the doctor; I was about 12 weeks along when the D&C was performed). The procedure seemed to go as normal; two weeks after it I had a post-op checkup where the specialist said everything looked good and like I was healing like normal. I felt better, everything seemed in the clear, and I was ready to move forward.
About 2.5 weeks after that post-op checkup for the D&C, I was just eating breakfast and stood up to put my bowl in the sink, and suddenly had a massive hemorrhage. I started to pass out within a few minutes, and my partner kept me conscious and called for an ambulance.
I ended up having two additional massive hemorrhages within 24 hours at the hospital and ended up hospitalized for five days. The team at this hospital (separate from the one I’d gone to for the first D&C) said that the first D&C had been incomplete and there was still a significant amount of tissue that had not been removed. It had started to spread, it had placed significant pressure on my right femoral artery, and that contributed to the massive hemorrhaging. Ended up needing an Angioseal on my right femoral artery, as well as a blood transfusion and a second D&C. Up until day 4 at the hospital, they were telling me there was a significant possibility that they would need to perform an emergency hysterectomy in order to save my life, and if the second D&C failed. Because it was a confirmed molar pregnancy via genetic testing and my HCG levels were abnormally high, they said there was a cancer risk attached and if those HCG levels did not drop after the second D&C, I would likely need to undergo chemotherapy.
Ultimately, the procedures they did seem to have worked; I did not undergo an emergency hysterectomy, did weekly blood tests after being discharged to monitor HCG levels (which dropped significantly after), and at my post-stay checkup a month later, they said I was looking good and they did not think chemotherapy would be necessary. I haven’t had any events/medical emergencies since.
However, I struggled with depression virtually all of last year. I have no pre-existing chronic health issues, never stayed in the hospital that long ever, and I’m in my mid 30s and have no kids (but partner and I do want them). I never had a miscarriage or anything before that. For the last year, I have struggled with general loss of energy and fatigue (which affected my job performance), intrusive thoughts and nightmares about hemorrhaging again, and with general sadness and anxiety about everything in that area. And I’m terrified about trying for another pregnancy even though I do want children because I’m terrified of having the experience happen again. Two different therapists last year believed I was experiencing PTSD from medical trauma related to the event, on top of depression.
Last year, I just did not have the strength or will to do much of anything and focused on just surviving/making it through the day. I did not speak to any lawyers and also was on the fence about whether I even should try to—never did a medical malpractice suit and not even sure if I’d have one, since technically I did not ultimately need an emergency hysterectomy. Also was hesitant because of the stigma around medical malpractice suits. It’s been a little over a year now, not sure if my time has run out there, but am wondering, would it be worthwhile to reach out to an attorney?

2024.05.14 15:42 Last_Event_7678 How to deal with low key misogyny from supervisor

I should say, what I perceive as low key misogyny. I’m in Europe social sciences.
I think my supervisor is misogynistic, including (but not only) towards me. He does all the classics: mansplaining topics to women who have specialist knowledge beyond his, centring male PhD students in meetings while skipping over the contributions of their female counterparts (even when they are much better), and, if he’s talking about other male academics, showing them with praise, talking about their genius and intellect, whereas women are all described as petty bureaucrats or, if you’re lucky, as “good fun”.
It’s annoying to experience as a supervisee and though I think if i were male he might have given me guidance or opportunities I've not been given as a female, but, it's all pretty low level and would be hard to pinpoint. As an experience overall over years though, it's been horrible. It makes me worry that this is what academia is like, surely it can't be, in 2024? So I'm just asking here, what is there to do? suck it up or escalate?

2024.05.14 15:19 emilymh99 Help..first pregnancy

2024.05.14 14:57 Regular-Efficiency52 Update on my fight against PFS (5 months off)

Dear Community,
It's been a while since I last posted here. I wanted to give you all a quick update on my situation. It has been 5 months since I've stopped Finasteride. I took it for 3 months and got hit with full blown PFS after stopping. Unfortunately, all of my following symptoms are still present:
ED can be managed with Cialis, but it's really a challenge to have sex when you have to force yourself. So, I've completely given up on my sex life for the moment. I've tried various supplements over the last couple of months with unfortunately only very little impact on my symptoms.
In the coming weeks, I will be trying HCG under my doctor's supervision, and I hope for improvements in my energy levels, brainfog, and of course, in the sexual department.
I will keep you updated.
Thanks for reading and keep going and most importantly donating to the PFS Network!

2024.05.14 14:50 AdEmotional6400 Tell me why I’m always an option

(Sorry in advance for the grammatical errors, if there are any)
I get a lot of male attention. A lot of the guys I’ve had a crush on, usually like me back. But they always end up choosing someone else. Why is that?
I asked my friend on what they think is the reason behind this is. One of them said that I don’t make it apparent enough to people, that I have goals and am serious abt pursuing them. One said I’m too intimidating, and that men usually go for girls or women for are below or within their level/league.
Idk who to believe. Maybe I do present mysef as someone unserious too often. And I think the reason behind that is bc I was always told that I was too much of a snob. And so to compensate for that, I try to jest and resort to smiling and laughing things off whenever I would get hurt. I know it’s an extremely toxic habit. One I need to address and alleviate ASAP. And I’m working on it.
As for the intimidating part. I used to think that I didn’t appeal myself as someone intidating enough. Yk, enough to be able to pull the good guys that could handle independent and intimidating women. And so I tried to seem more so, which might have been the wrong choice. Cuz now I seem TOO intimidating to people outside, which I think would give them one hell of a shock once they get to know me. Cuz then they’d know how I truly behave and think. Idk what to do.
How do I pull the serious, goal-oriented, mature typa guys? How do I behave? What do I do?

2024.05.14 14:43 EntertainerOk3866 Had a medical abortion and HCG levels haven’t dropped after 24 hours

Hey guys,
So I had ms-2step 13/05 and when I took it 30 minutes in the cheeks and shortly after swallowed and then I vomited after 45 minutes. Anyways still had pain/bleeding including clots. I contacted the pharmacy and they said it should be okay as did my doctor according to my symptoms. I thought all was good and it seemed like it worked. I did not have anymore nausea (I was having it basically all day every day + vomiting) so this was very promising that I no longer had it. So I went for my 24 hour HCG level blood test and my doctor has just called and said my test results have not gone down and still resemble someone 6-7 weeks which I would have been. I have a repeat in 2 days time but I need something to ease my mind. She said this test will determine if the pregnancy is still viable. Anyone had any similar experiences and it been all good?
All the sources online are reading not promising.

2024.05.14 14:31 Chaotic_Peace_79 Doc thinks HCG level is low, not sure what to do

Hi, I am almost 3-4 weeks pregnant and I have a longer cycle of around 37 days. I did a Beta HCG which came around 120, my doctor said that this is low and asked if I had bled (which I didn’t), so I am freaking out now. Also, I have been tracking the HCG line in pregnancy test, it seems to be getting dark every day. But now that the doctor said that I don’t know what to think. Any advice?

2024.05.14 14:00 ManagementNo5406 Profile Review

Applying for Fall 25 batch in round 1, Background - Indian Male (23 years) GMAT - 675, 730 (have both) Work ex - 3 years in top (MAANG) level company as an SDE (by the time I start MBA) Undergrad - 3.2 GPA in top 5 engineering college in India Extracurricular - Avid football and chess fan, have been part of clubs, not in any leadership role. Have good oration and have spoken in numerous debates, elocutions during my academics. I know I am not a great candidate for any of the top B schools. I am fine with not getting into M7, if it’s at least T25. Also I will need a decent scholarship. Considering these things, what all areas should I work on as top priority? Happy to share any more information! TIA!

2024.05.14 13:36 TARANTULA_TIDDIES Can taking an acetyl-l-carnitine supplement (or the other meds/supplements enumerated in post) raise CPK levels? Taking an experimental monoclonal antibody treatment and was comcerned

Hi all,
I'm currently doing a clinical trial for a new monoclonal antibody treatment for an autoimmune disorder. Because of this, every time I go in to get the injection they run a whole gamut of tests. So far, I've been three times with the last being yesterday.
They told me yesterday that my first test result for cpk level was fine (initial eval) but that my second test (which was taken immediately prior to first injection) said my cpk levels were elevated, though they didn't say how much.
I didn't even know what that was until I looked up when I got home. And now that I'm typing this I'm realizing that it's creatine phosphokinase and not carnitine phosphokinase so I guess I'll have to adjust my question:
Are there other supplements or meds that can do this?
I take an SNRI, ADHD stimulant medication, finasteride, b vit and multivitamin, as well as a diskus asthma inhaler (fluticason and salmeterol). I also drink and smoke, though working on reducing the first (~4 drinks a day) and quitting the second (7-10 a day). I'm a 31 y/o male. Height is 5' 11" and weight is 142lb
It just concerned me when I read that cpk levels could be elevated by autoimmune stuff and I have asthma and eczema AND am taking an experimental monoclonal antibody treatment. Thanks!

2024.05.14 12:38 robot2084tron 777 Business

Just got off two connecting 10h+ TK flights, both 777 in J. While not "private" I've never slept so well on their big flat bed. Once you have the eye mask on it doesn't really matter
Here is a hint I didn't discover until 2nd flight - the armrest pops up creating a divider
Good service from the female flight attendants - not EVA or Qatar level, but better than most. Seems to me the male flight attendants only job is to distribute bread during meal services

2024.05.14 12:27 PhoenixFllies777 Judoka in MMA / High-level Judo use in MMA (List)

Judo is extremely underrated in MMA. It is definitely under-represented as well, due to a multitude of reasons (MMA is no-gi, Judo doesn't train leg attacks, IJF bans its top athletes from cross-competing, most MMA is in the USA where Judo sucks and wrestling is world-class, etc etc), but Judo is still very much used in MMA. The problem is many times, nobody recognizes it. American MMA commentators are also almost always completely clueless when it comes to Judo, which doesn't help (you need not go any further than Karo Parisyan basically going through half the Gokyo on his opponents, only to be greeted with the same OH MY GOD ! JUDO THROW! by Joe Rogan). There are many fighters, both superstars (Islam, Fedor) and not (Gregory Rodrigues, Luana Pinheiro) who heavily use Judo in their matches.
Over the years, I have actively been looking for Judo in MMA. I am going to share my list of fighters displaying high level Judo in MMA, as a reference point for anyone looking to see how the art is used in MMA, or even for anyone just looking to see some banging throws. The list is by no means exhaustive. I would love for people more knowledgeable than me to add fighters I may have missed.
Disclaimer: Let's focus on Judo use in MMA. There are several fighters who have a background, even a black belt, in Judo but don't really use it (Amanda Nunes, Valentina Shevchenko, Merab Dvalishvili, Shinya Aoki, Seika Izawa, Fabricio Werdum, Ronaldo Jacare Souza just off the top of my head). Also yes, Morote Gari is a leg takedown, and it is in the Judo syllabus. Almost nobody learned double legs in Judo, let's not go to these extremes.
Karo Parisyan
The OG of Judo in MMA, the man who single-handedly put Judo on the MMA map. Judo is displayed in all of his matches; several Youtube breakdowns and highlights exist as well. He also put out a Judo for MMA instructional which is gold, if you can get your hands on it. Unfortunately he got derailed by personal issues (I hear he's doing better now thankfully). Huge variety of throws, he used throws nobody else has used before or after against very high level opponents. Shoutout to his kimura grip hikikomi gaeshi that he almost beat GSP with.
Ronda Rousey
UFC champion, Olympic bronze medalist, WMMA pioneer - you know her, everyone knows her. Extremely one-dimensional, but a pioneer for her time. Her entire game plan was clinch JUDO THROW juji gatame (armbar). Shoutout to her textbook use of hip toss into kesa gatame into roflstomp (vs Alexis Davis). Her matches with Miesha Tate are also among the best MMA matches (male or female).
Fedor Emelianenko
PRIDE champion. Arguably the Heavyweight GOAT. Probably the best example of Judo adapted to MMA (together with Islam), as he did not rely on Judo as much as Karo or Ronda, but perfectly blended it with his striking to create an unstoppable force. I'd heavily recommend watching Sonny Brown's Fedor breakdown on Youtube, or pretty much any one of Fedor's matches, they're awesome. Shoutout to his use of the overhand right to switch stances when initiating clinches (as a R-handed Judo fighter fighting out of an Orthodox stance).
Islam Makhachev
UFC champion. Undefeated. Ideal example of Judo adapted to MMA. Yes, he's a Dagestani, and he has been training in MMA all his life, so obviously his style is not purely Judo, but it's obvious to anyone who knows where to look that his grappling base is more Judo than wrestling based. Shoutout to him submitting Charles Oliveira, the most prolific BJJ specialist in MMA history, with a Kata Gatame (arm-triangle choke, routinely taught in Judo as a pin with submission potential). His style is also very different from Khabib, who I will not include in this list for the opposite reason; his grappling base was significantly more wrestling based (although he did execute some ridiculously perfect Judo throws on occasion). The entire Khabib camp uses both Judo and wrestling though.
Jon Jones
UFC Champion. Contender for all-time GOAT. Is Jon Jones a Judoka? Nope. Do his matches feature Judo? Absolutely. You only need to watch one of his highlight reels to see a variety of Judo throws, Osoto Gari, Harai Goshi, Tai Otoshi, Sasae, a variety of Kosotos, along with his wrestling-based takedowns. He also uses a lot of inside trips, obviously from wrestling, but he's still a good example of how to use Ouchi Gari in MMA.
Jimmy Hettes
UFC former fighter. Old-school prolific grappler. Very high level Judo and BJJ. Did not have many matches, but they were all grappling clinics, and every one included a multitude of Judo throws (mainly Harai Goshi).
Kayla Harrison
PFL tournament winner. Double Olympic gold medalist. Her recent UFC debut against Holly Holm featured a Harai and a brutal Osoto Gari into a finishing choke.
Yoshihiro Akiyama (Sexiyama)
Heavy Judo base. Struggled in the UFC, but had some banging throws. Still competes at almost 50. Also his nickname was Sexy, can't go wrong with that.
Hector Lombard
Judo Olympian. Heavy Judo base as well, with very slick throws, although he preferred to stand and bang. Was once one of the hottest non-UFC MMA prospects, his career took a massive dive after he got popped for roids.
Satoshi Ishii
Judo Gold medalist. Heavy Judo base. Fought in a variety of promotions around the world, an absolute dog but with average results. He got brutally destroyed by Cro Cop, then went to train with him in Croatia, then denounced his citizenship and became a Croatian citizen. Lol. Also trains with Danaher, and has a bunch of no-gi Judo instructionals at ridiculous prices (because Danaher).
Serghei Spivac
UFC Heavyweight contender. Ragdolls everyone with sloppy but effective Judo throws. Shoutout to his landing in Kesa Gatame too.
Luana Pinheiro
UFC fighter. Judo black belt, (I believe) Olympic alternate. Uses Judo as her main offensive grappling base, has taken down all of her opponents with the same Harai Goshi / O Guruma hybrid.
Gregory Rodrigues
UFC fighter. ?Relative unknown. I personally never heard of him, until I randomly came across one of his matches were he executed one of the most brutal Harai's I've ever seen into a finish. All of his matches feature some degree of Judo, mainly uses Harai. No recorded Judo rank on his wiki (he's recorded as a heavily credentialed BJJ blackbelt), but it's obvious he has Judo training. Also very good wrestling and kickboxing (yes, he's very exciting to watch). Shoutout to his match against Brunno Fereira, a Judo black belt who escaped top position from Rodrigues by securing an Ippon grip, rolling to his knees, and chucking Rodrigues forward with a kneeling Ippon Seoi before brutally KO'ing him a few seconds later.
Tagir Ulanbekov
UFC fighter. Khabib's camp. Uses a lot of clinch takedowns. An absolute specialist in step around throws (I believe it's called "Polish" in wrestling?) - in Judo terms it would be Kosoto Gake +/- Ura Nage depending how you finish it.
Ayaka Miura
ONE Championship fighter. Heavy Judo base. Shoutout to her use of Kesa Gatame to finish opponents.
Rick Hawn
Judo Olympian. Twice fought for the Bellator championship. Unfortunately, I have not watched any of his actual matches, so I cannot confirm how much Judo he uses (I'd love for someone to chime in). Still has a highlight-reel standing Ippon Seoi Nage into KO, so I had to include him.
..
Honorable mention to Yoel Romero, an absolute unit of an athlete. Olympic silver medalist and World champion in Freestyle wrestling, fought for UFC gold. Obviously not a Judoka but he has the cleanest Sasae you will ever see in MMA, as well as a bunch of beautiful step-around throws and inside trips you've probably learned in Judo.

2024.05.14 12:21 DoubleA_89 Just diagnosed with T2 diabetes today :(

Hey everyone, as the title suggests, I was diagnosed with T2 diabetes by my GP today. For reference, I'm male, 34years, 216 lbs, with a family history of diabetes. I was initially diagnosed as pre-diabetic, with a fasting hbA1c of 6.1%, but my GP wanted to rule out diabetes with an OGTT. I had bloodwork done 2.5 years ago where my hbA1c was 5.5, hadn't had a test done after that until this recent one.
Turns out OGTT results were not good and doc was slightly surprised that it progressed this far. For reference here are the results: Fasting glucose 6.2 mmol/L 1-hour 13.6 mmol/L 2-hour 12.9 mmol/L
He prescribed me with Metformin 500mg twice a day and told me to monitor my blood glucose levels. I'm scheduled to see him again in about 3 weeks to assess my condition and see if the medication dosage needs to be upped/reduced/maintained.
I'm a bit bummed with the diagnosis and having a hard time processing it. Didn't expect it to progress this fast. I have a couple of questions: - is it possible to be diagnosed as diabetic when your hbA1c is still in the prediabetic range? Are my OGTT results abnormal compared to my hbA1c? - once you start on Metformin, is it lifelong? I'm also worried about the long-term effects of Metformin, especially with my kidneys.
I''ve already taken some steps to change my lifestyle and eating habits. I hope to manage it into remission but right now I just feel a bit emotionally overwhelmed that I've been diagnosed with a life-long condition at this age. Thanks in advance everyone.
