ndtll.dll error in Fallout 4

2024.05.15 17:21 SouthernShape2180 ndtll.dll error in Fallout 4

  2. The U.S. military wears civilian clothes, enters Taiwan as tourists, and then joins the Taiwan military to perform tasks.
  3. The U.S. military conducts regular sea and air patrols in the Taiwan Strait and conducts joint exercises with the Taiwan military to prevent Taiwan from being blocked.
  4. Taiwan has strengthened its network security and stockpiled disaster relief and survival supplies and equipment to prevent hacker attacks, water and power outages, network interruptions, and air traffic (road) blockades.
  5. Taiwan has established its own Merchant Fleet to prevent foreign merchant ships from going to Taiwan for fear of mainland sanctions.
  6. The US and Taiwan are strengthening cognitive operations globally and on the island to make the world support Taiwan independence and not dare to abandon Taiwan, and to make the island dare not surrender.

2024.05.14 03:09 WorriedBoutItFcknAll The reality of the management situation

I gotta level with the people on this sub, there's like a 90% chance jackshit happens to Clark. If anything does happen it's probably a slap on the wrist and a "Naughty, Clarky Clark, don't do that again!" and he can go on with his life.
People here seem to vastly overestimate the impact of Clark and of Daniel Larson. The main things Larson has done is rack up thousands in dollars in damages to infrastructure and to restaurants, and has threatened to blow up federal buildings 7(?) times. Clark mainly caused the former. Larson's deranged nature caused the latter.
The only way I can see Clark facing any sort of significant punishment from the FBI or your typical law enforcement is from manipulating Daniel not to take his meds. I really don't see him facing any punishment for telling Larson to pull a fire alarm at an Olive Garden or for saying he had a reservation with Vanderwaal, let alone receiving that from the FBI of all people.
And for all the people saying "He said slurs, that's a hate crime!" or whatever else, yeah, that's true, but those sorts of charges would probably only exist when someone's already being prosecuted or if it's their 'main thing.' It's a way to add time on to a horrible person's sentence. I mean, this doesn't take much critical thinking to figure out. Slurs fly around like bullets online everyday from people who have their phone number, full name, date of birth and home address attached to social media and nothing would ever happen to them because, well, why would it? They usually don't do much else, so there's not a point in getting them just for saying no-no words online, regardless of how much evidence there is for this.
This also goes for most of management, too. Yes, they did some horrible things, not necessarily cruel but incredibly petty and damaging towards Colorado establishments and towards its residents, but there are very few that governmental bodies like the FBI would be remotely interested in even talking to, let alone prosecuting for this or that crime. The worst thing I can remember hearing about one of them was that they impersonated the FBI, but given the circumstances and the fact that it's (probably?) unrelated to Daniel wanting to BOMB YOU/KILL YOU, I seriously doubt it'll be brought up again.
Yes, we all want Clark and management to face some punishment, if not for what they did to Daniel then what they did using Daniel as a proxy for their behaviour. No, I don't see that punishment ever coming around.
(Side note: I find it really funny that post-incident, people here are going "Daniel was a mentally ill man and it was all management's doing that made him do these things!" When did we start blaming management for the fact that Daniel is a foul, despicable person? A lot of the incidents were caused by him of his own accord and without interference with management, so don't go running around claiming he's some misunderstood man who's deep down not so bad.
Additionally, it's funny seeing these same people post-incident start saying these things not long after going "Daniel should 100% dine-and-dash again" or "Daniel at Olive Garden was so funny I'm happy we had an incident like that!" Most of you whiteknighting Daniel supported what management was doing at the time besides paying Daniel because you wanted to see him suffer and die on the streets. Don't switch up on how you feel now he's been arrested by the FBI.)

2024.05.12 10:29 PropRatActual The Albino: Ep 9

Hi all! This one is a hell of a weird upload time, but I couldn't sleep so... Here goes.
First, Previous, Next(Patreon)
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
“I want Death by Carnivore” Benjamin almost broke down as he watched his kid sister through his memories, speaking as he did so. He could feel the Farie next to him even as he saw through his own eyes this time. He described everything in brutal detail, heard the screams, felt the bullets tear into him as he spoke. The vision’s felt distant this time, and Ben recognized Vilora’s gentle touch as she dulled the worst of the sensations for him. He had not asked her to, but he suspected that she had felt the full brunt already from their first experience of his flashback together.

“Ben! Don’t go! NONONONONO” Ben could still see his kid sisters blood-stained fingers, and face. Then the “trip”. Hurtling through the universe or rather, into the universe. He felt Vilora tense violently when His memories of meeting the being made of fire began. “I am the one you call, Sol.” She kissed him before pushing him and the memories ended.

Benjamin opened his eyes, failing to contain tears. He missed Tracy. He was terrified of whether she was ok or not. He wished he could have talked to his father one last time. Emotions broiled through him as he took a deep breath, realizing that he was still holding onto Vilora’s hands tightly. He released them, noting the complicated look on her face. “Now, you know everything.” His voice was barely above a whisper, “I don’t know what I am because, I was not born into this world. Where I come from; Farie, Orc, Trolls… They don’t exist. They have never existed outside of the fantasy of Literature. Viola, Valtria, Qort… All of you only serve passing resemblance to what our fiction stories created, and there are many more peoples that I have never imagined in my wildest dreams. “

Vilora nodded slowly, “But, your sister… her golden hair. She is…”

Benjamin cut her off, “Human. She is Human, like me. Humanity is the only sentient being on my… orb” He noted Vilora’s eyes as he used her terminology, “Humans come in a wide variety of shapes, sized and colors. Humans who have lived for generations in the deserts of Africa can have skin as dark as the coal a forgemaster uses to fuel his flames. People who live in the cold, bleak climates without much sun… They end up with skin much like mine. My mother Is Irish by blood, she gave me my eyes and my hair, and she gave my sister her short stature and petite form. My father is Norwegian by blood. He gave me my height, and my facial features, but he gave my sister her golden locks. My best friend was a Filipino named Crisanto, and he has dark hair, dark eyes, and brown skin. All of us, are still human, all of us bleed as I do.”

A pregnant silence fell over the group until Jukha finally spoke, “I believe you, Pink Skin.”

“You’ve been touched… Cosmos, who was she that brought you here.” Vilora asked finally.

“She told me that she has many names, She claims that My planet.. um… Orb.. has many variations, and that she is there for all of them. I’m guessing that This is earth, what we call my orb, but in some sort of alternative time, or dimension; but that is all but a guess.” Ben said, “She only ever named herself Sol. It is the name we gave to our sun, but she spoke of the Cosmos.”

Vilora nodded, “If she is our sun… Then…” she froze as Jukha put a hand on her shoulder.

“I don’t know..” Benjamin said, “She told me she was sending me to a time of peace, but that I was needed to save this world… But I don’t know what I am doing. I don’t know what the threat is. I don’t even know where I am. I’m lost, hardly able to fight, and haunted by the day of my own death…” Ben lowered his head, “I have no…” he couldn’t finish the words..

“You are touched by Cosmos,” Vilora responded, “No one has seen a god in over 1500 years. My sisters will need to hear of this, they may able to help. The Vin are not nearly as extinct as the brute believed them to be.”

“If they can, I would be grateful. I need to get back to the Forge. I swore to Qort that I would return.” Benjamin began to rise, only to be stopped by both slave girls.

Jukha nodded, “We will go in the morning, I require supplies to fix my home.” Benjamin nodded, leaning back against Viola, thankful for the support. He raised an eyebrow as she placed an object in his hand, “I’m sorry.. I was too late. I found it right as the Orc stabbed you.”

“Yes, about that” Jukha grumbled, “Would you care to tell me what sort of Majik you know if you can blow a hole through the middle of a soldier caste, and destroying your hand in the process. Or rather, how you managed to kill a Hellirine with fire. They are dam near immune to heat. ”

Benjamin chuckled, “If you could help me outside, Ill show you. Grab that strange pole from over there.” He gingerly stood, being supported by his slave girls ‘I really need to get them free’ he thought as they helped him to the bench outside pointed facing the court yard. “I probably shouldn’t shoot that right now, so lets see if the powder is dry enough. Jukha, hold the wooden end to your shoulder. Pull back the hammer looking bit back and make sure the curved metal is covering the cup at the bottom. Jukha did so, and carefully looked over at Benjamin, “Now, point that end at the tree over there, and pull the little metal bit underneath.
*chuff…BOOOM!* fire belched from the end of the metal tube, and Jukha was pushed hard enough to take a step back. The powder was slow, possibly still a touch damp, but it ignited, hurtling four round pieces of lead at the tree, two of them hit, blowing bits of splinters out the back of the wood. “That is an early version of what my people use for war. It’s called, a musket.” Jukha looked wide eyed at the crude weapon. Benjamin had modelled his hastily thought up design after the British Short Land pattern Musket, commonly known as the Brown Bess. The stock was a bit thicker than it should be, and the barrel was crudely formed, but it worked after a fashion. Benjamin had chosen to use an equally old ammunition design known as ‘Buck and Ball’ turning the musket into a 4 ball shotgun consisting of one .68in round lead ball with 3 .32in lead balls accompanying it. “I didn’t have time to make something more advanced, and I was never taught to fight with sword or lance. Viola here” He glanced over to the girl still clutching the curved stinky object, “Is holding a smaller version of that musket. It’s called a pistol.” Viola’s eyes flew wide as she held the weapon away from her in fear. “Its ok, I’ll teach you how, come here.” He stood her in front of him, leaning forward to support her. “Put both hands on the curved part, stretch your arms out” he ran his hands along her thin arms, giving his aid to her form. “… That’s close enough, we can work on the details later, now pull the hammer back and close the “frizzen” the curved bit. Now, pull the small lever underneath. It’s called a trigger. *bang!* the smaller report of the weaker charge still bucked the pistol in Viola’s hands, and she missed the tree entirely. The recoil drove her back into Ben’s shoulder. “Very good. I’ll take that now. Thank you.” She handed the smoking weapon to him, eyes wide in wonder. “In simplest terms, I am using Alchemy to create pressure to throw a round rock. I didn’t kill the… Hellirine with heat, I used heat to throw four rocks seven times faster than any bow. The impact did the rest.” Benjamin had to suppress a laugh at the slow dumfounded expression that Jukha gave the musket in his hand before turning back to Benjamin with a serious face.

“You’ve been here less than a year. You can’t have mastered majik to this point already, how are you not dead.” Jukha scowled.

“The night you brought me to town.” Benjamin answered, “Sol visited me in my room. I sorta…” he paused scratching the back of his neck, “blew up in her face. I was yelling at her, cursing her for sending me here with nothing in my possession to be able to do what she asked of me. She told me that she could not aid me in the way I wanted because of some old rules from the beginning of time, or whatever, Then I got this wild idea in my head. What if I could perfectly recall everything, I had ever laid eyes on. Every class, every concept, every formula and compound matrix. Before I knew it, she told me “I believe I can grant this” without me asking it out loud. She forced me to sleep like you did” He pointed at Vilora. “I didn’t know what she meant until I began working at Qort’s..” Ben slowly drew his Bowie knife from its sheath, tapping it lightly on the barrel of the musket. It rang like a chime.

__________________________________________________________________________________________

Qort grumbled as he closed down his shop. It had been three weeks since the Albino had left, and he was beginning to doubt the man’s survival. Benjamin was a paradox of an Orc, but he had given the Forgemaster the gift of steel. He had already sold a sword and two daggers for double what he would normally ask for. He secretly wondered how long it would take before the Academy came knocking on his door demanding his secrets. For now, he was content to sell what he could, and build a nest egg for himself. He rounded the corner to the building he had allowed Benjamin to live in, and stopped cold as he recognized Jukha’s cart. “Qort!” The Orc called out from the doorway, “My friend! How are you!” The Orc smiled.

“Aye’m Doin’ fair. D’yee bring’ta pink skin Back T’Mee?” Qort asked speculatively, and a heavily bandaged Figure, topped with Red hair and propped up by a pair of familiar girls slowly waddled out of the doorway, “I’m here Qort, but I’ll need a few weeks before I can return to work.”

Qort pushed past the Orc, walking quickly up to Benjamin, “What did you do to yourself, boy.” He looked Benjamin over as he leaned on Viola and Valtrya.

“I’ll be ok, boss. I Just got a little beat up saving the overgrown Olive.” Benjamin put on a smirk, recognizing Qorts ‘serious’ voice.

“What is an Olive, and why do I wanna punch you now.” Jukha joked back. “He saved my life, Qort; but he took a lance to the chest for it. It’s a miracle he survived.”

“I see. Well, considering how well business is going; I can make do until you recover. Savin a friend of mine is to be respected.” Qort said before finally dropping back into his accent with a smile, “N’don’t Yee be getting Soft wi’the girlies. Aye’ll be workin’ta snot outta’yee, when’yee return!” With that, the Durr Forgemaster waved his goodbyes, picked up the stack of coal he needed for tomorrow, and headed back home.

“That was close,” Vilora murmured after he rounded the corner. She had concealed herself behind the inward opening door, “His people suffered the worst in the hands of the Fay. I don’t think he would let me explain.”

“Hmm,” Jukha nodded, “Best to leave tonight then. Qort’s no idiot, and Benjamin needs to rest.” He turned, squeezing Ben on the shoulder, “Rest up. I owe you. I’ll swing buy with some game in a few days to keep everyone fed while you recover.”

Ben nodded, waving bye to the two as they slipped out into the night. Benjamin spent the next 4 weeks forcibly being cared for by the two Aereesin girls. They refused to let him sleep alone for the first two weeks of their return, and he lacked the will to complain. He didn’t let them off lightly, however. And as soon as he could sit for a long period of time, he began teaching them basic math, science, and writing. Luckily his “Orcish” automatic conversion from English transferred to reading and writing. They worked hard at their studies. Valtrya was excelling in basic math but struggling in phonics as she still refused to speak. Viola seemed to jump on the idea of letters and sounds but had more trouble with her numbers. Both of them, to Benjamin’s surprise, liked the sciences, but LOVED the Forge. Maybe it was the heat on their still thin bodies, or maybe it was because it was the first place that they experienced kindness. Benjamin did not know, but he added basics of running the billows and heating the furnace to their studies. By the time he was fit to return, they could get the forge roaring almost as effortlessly as they could swiftly.

Their bodies were also changing rapidly. Viola was obviously the older of the two, and she was quickly becoming painfully gorgeous to look at. Valtrya was following in her sisters footsteps, quickly bringing Benjamin to question just how young these girls may or may not be. It was a small relief when the two finally decided he could keep himself warm at night and began sleeping in their own room that used to be the old apprentice quarters. The building was built much like Qort’s current forge, just smaller. The Forgeroom was in the middle with the main entrance to the building on one end, and the two separate living quarters on the other. The walls proved thin, when Benjamin was awakened from one of his nightmares by the soft shaking of Viola. She could hardly be persuaded to leave his side, knowing in full what he was dreaming about, she instead sat with him for over an hour until he finally began to doze off.

Their return to work saw Qort elated. The Forgemaster watched as the girls prepared the Forge, and Ben started gathering tools and material. The Forgemaster had essentially two apprentices and a partner Forgemaster in his shop, and the next few months flew by. Summer came, and the Forge began drawing high end clients from across the realm. All races, and all creeds requested commissions from Qorts establishment, and soon Benjamin made the observation that they could make even more if they used both forges. So, it was done. Viola and Valtrya floated between the forges, assisting in keeping everything running smoothly; and Benjamin began working in the smaller forge. He began to feel better as the summer heated up, and His dreams slowly faded in their frequency and intensity. The second forge also allowed Benjamin to begin his journey further into Majik. His first attempts were rudimentary at best, but he searched his memory for the techniques and concepts that he would need. He tested his less… mechanical ideas in the forest during his visits to Jukha. Vilora picked up where Qorts understanding of Majik failed, and the things that were possible both intrigued and terrified Ben. He almost blew himself up three more times, but they were under the watchful eye of Vilora, who was able to heal him more easily each time as she learned the Human body. The last “accident” took her no more than a half hour to repair his seared off hair and mangled hands.

The first leaves were just beginning to turn colors when Benjamin began introducing Viola and Valtrya to advanced math and engineering concepts. Neither one showed any promise in Majik, despite being present for the majority of Benjamins learning of the supernatural art, but they worked hard to soak in all he taught them. Both of them now preferred the leather working clothes of the forge, and they were beginning to craft kitchen cutlery and small knives for the more generic commissions. Benjamin watched as the village slowly accepted them. In the villager’s eyes, they were valuable, if pampered slaves, but their “masters” treatment of them was seen as acceptable because of the results that it was producing. The girls were contributing, being made to work hard, and Benjamin’s occasional explanation of the rigors of the Forge sufficed as reasonable for their food and clothing requirements. Viola was widely acknowledged as Benjamin’s proxy when buying food or procuring material from venders, but they did not need to know that Benjamin often sent her out to “practice being free” with no actual mission in mind. The villagers never asked, so Ben and the girls never needed to lie about it.

Valtrya was a harder problem. Her mute status would make her a harder sell for immigrating into a more lenient kingdom, and Benjamins attempt to get her to speak were proving a failure. Viola simply said that it was not her story to tell, and that Valtrya wished for him to not see her with pity. Ben still wracked his brain to figure out a way to get through to the girl.

One morning, Benjamin woke up early. He was happy, it was a strange feeling for him. It was the weekend, and he stepped out into the forge to find Viola sitting at the table. She was spooning a mouthful of gruel to her lips, and he waved her down as she tried to get up to serve him. He smiled as she sat down without argument this time. ‘Maybe she’s finally getting it.’ He thought as he filled his own bowl and sat down across from her, “How’d you sleep.” he asked between mouthfuls.

She sighed heavily, “well enough.” She responded, “What shall we do today?” and Benjamin smiled at her with mischief in his eyes, “lady’s choice. What shall we do today?”
“I…” Viola stuttered pausing for a long moment, “I.. I want to go out… to get fitted for a new dress, then to eat, The three of us.” Benjamin raised an eyebrow and Viola quickly backpedaled, “I mean, we don’t have to. I don’t know what I was...” but Ben held up a hand.

“Out it is.” He said gently, “Go wake Val, Lets get some food in us before we leave.”

“Val?” Viola asked and Benjamin smiled broadly, “My people shorten the names of friends. Your sister’s name can be shortened to Val, and Yours to Vi. Is that ok?”

“I… I like it.” Viola said after a moment, “I’ll go get her, she’s been wanting a nice dress for a long time.”

Viola got up and semi rushed toward the room she shared with her sister, and Benjamin filled a third bowl and set it at an empty place on the table, Today was going to be a good day.

2024.05.12 03:43 Magictyper75 My character Omar’s Moveset and abilities

My character Omar’s Moveset and abilities
Stat Burst`
On average, to Gain speed, Omar gives up Power, to gain Durability he gives up speed, and to gain Power he gives up Durability. This makes Each thing functioning as a Glass Cannon, A Pestering Fly, and a Power Tank. This is the base options, but other trades are possible, like before. Hook Swords Swords Release of a Ringing Noise when making Contact with Air, of which Omar is toned to handling to listening to. This Ringing serves as a Sound Based Staggerment, As everytime the Swords Move through the air, Nearby enemies will have a hindered reaction time. Power Move; Thundeclapping the Hook Swords now create a Large radius of this effect around Omar, Strong enough to Disperse Loose Matter forms such as Blast, and Causing enemies to suffer momentary Hearing Loss and Hallucinations. This move can’t be overused, as Omar suffers Ill effects if this shockwave goes on for extended periods of time. The Katana (forgot the name, sorry Slim) The Katana is enhanced from its original purpose, now Serving as a Defensive Fatal Blow striking weapon. When moved around fast, The Sword creates an effect around where it travels for an extended period of time which are as sharp as its blade. Katana also can Siphon Away at where it slashes, such as the air which is filling in constantly as of its existence. The Katana can then eject out Matter Blobs, which serve as Usually Invisible Walls in the Air where they’re placed. If the Sword absorbs these after they’re placed in, a Explosion of Condensed Matter will occur In Combat; When hitting an Enemy, creates an Explosion Each time, treating each slash as an Effective Automatic Stagger.
Spear of Destiny
This Spear when used Gives Omar multiple Clairvoyant Scenarios of which all objects can move across. These visions can keep lasting, but at the expense of their clarity. While the Spear is in Use, Omar May Siphon this Clarity to make the Spear appear within a different event path. The clarity will recharge while not in use. Power Move; Omar can use a Technique which I’ll Coin as “Destiny Within Clairty”. When this move is used, Summon A Rapidly appearing Spear of Destiny in different times of events happening. After use, Clairvoyance becomes extremely hazzy for a long time. In Omar lands a Fine Blow with the Spear of Destiny, Omar clarity gains a boost To nerf These abilities, Omar Slowly have his Stats Lower when being used over time, which is a Soft weakening
Nanobots
giving em a proper use The Nanobots now work as Omar’s “Workshop”, capable of proceeding random Armaments as he needs from it. Nanobots can create these Armaments based on data they collect while in use, but not storing them for storage reasons. Insane buff here; Omar Naturally creates these Nanobots from where he moves, Similar to what Misaka Mikoto Does with their Metal Sand. This allows Omar to Create these Weapons while also hitting someone, Allowing him to chain Things such as Shotguns and Revolvers before removing them free of Charge. With Guns; Guns now serve to jet across a Minor Hyperspace gate made from the Barrel. This small Gate made while firing Accelerates the Items Fired (Mostly Bullets) to arrive on their target based on how much energy that target creates or is creating. It should be noted these lines are faintly visible, and can deflected if fired at enemy half hazardously. This mainly becomes useful for people who can easily stop normal Bullets. Omar Also can use the Nanobots in Conjunction with other things he does to use them as a Enhancer. Mimicria Physiology As of the Nature of his Nanobots, Omar utilizes the ability to Copy Data. However, this allows Omar to Produce his copied items through forms of energy and such, the list of what he can produce naturally is as follows; Energy Light Darkness Air Solid Liquid Plasma Magecraft When he makes the forms of matter in this form, it Also traces with what he does constantly, like most characters. However, due to the Nanobots, Omar can Constantly reuse the Energy he Leaks from his usages into Weaponry or Projectiles.

Part 2; New Shit

(Thanks crenaso) Shark Tangler
A Strictly Based Hand to Hand Combat Technique which is used by Omar in the Case he needs a On the Fly Negation Attack. In this Movement, Omar will smack down the enemy by which they attacked, Leveraging their movement strictly above Omar. Right after this, Omar will leap forward while grabbing them by their Waist (or the closest thing to their Waist) and make them curl their own attack towards themselves. This Attack will then leave them spinning in the air. Only effective against attacks in which the attacker really put their back into it. Severed Links A literal angelic engraved BO STAFF from the Cherubim empire in Heaven, making for an effective tool for combat through the Bo staff’s influence on the user. The staff controls itself from a sort of artificial consciousness, making for swifter and more accurate movements Power Move; Omar can allow the Staff to Go into Full Control, Giving him a Short times Quasi Untouchability, in which he basically goes MUI. After use, Omar suffers a Cause of Headaches based on how long he did it for.
The FreeWay
An artillery weapon used to target 4 points of interest to launch air strikes that split into 3 rockets spreading out twice. When the Rockets are Fired out, if they miss their target, they may quickly corrupt the area of which they landed at. These Area’s now serve as Turrets, which have a Perfect aiming system for objects they can track.
Avarus Sediment
Omar stomps the ground with an energy surrounding his boot to cause a mass amount of golden dust to cover the area, making for disorientation or energy redirection purposes, amplifying the damage output of energy from how much of the dust was used. Within this Dust Storm Created by the Stomp. Omar also can clog attacks from starting, such as energy blast. The Dust is also force attracted, meaning all energy sources within the dust will attract the Dust to it.
Heaven’s Snapshot
Omar just has a straight up bullet near his finger that he can shoot at things to cause the bullet to explode into point-induced damage from a condensed area of the explosion, causing the ground to also explode similar to that of pool splash for half a second, making a small cloud of smoke that inflicts the same type of point-inducing damage onto an enemy. Yes, the bullet itself is the weapon, and Omar can bring it back after shooting it by lifting his fingers to bring it back to his hand.
Mammoth Style
Omar learns a fighting style from Mammoth genre, utilizing his elbows and Knees as a Standing place while on the offensive. During this Techniques use, Omar utilizes extending out his Arms and Legs to stagger while keeping his head an Torso leaned back from the enemy. When seeing a Opening, Will bounce off of his Legs and apply a massive amount of his own weight and what every attack he plans to do. Power Technique; [Torso Prison]. Omar will smack the middle under part of the enemy’s waist, then bash his elbows into their shoulders. Dealing Critical Damage to Male, Omar’s Maneuver numbs out the Shoulders and Waist Muscles at a high instantaneous Rate, if not just outright shattering them.
Degradation
A pair of gloves that, when hit an object, gradually degrades their effectiveness in building kinetic and potential energy, slowing them down slightly per hit, whilst on the contrary, making Omar hit slower over time when the gloves are active. Each knuckle delivers a piercing electric shock that can cause major knock back and parrying mechanics if surged properly at the right time. Omar after doing this enough can do “Bad Update”, Restoring an Object’s lost effectiveness but also making the object have a hard time dealing with the regained material. (Example: Multiple Rib Cage Shots will make their Ribcage feel heavy due to the buff, causing breathing issues). Also removes debuffs Omar has sustained from use.
The B.R.O.N.D (Basketball Ricocheting and Obstruction Number Device)
A Genuine Basketball of Enhanced Metrics. This Basketball will gain Power the More time it’s made hitting a surface. It should be noted for this move, the ball itself is the speed of a normal basketball at all times, of which you must remember how fast Omar can move, he is capable of fighting people while drippling the basketball in time. The balls main ability to maintain this speed while also gaining power as if it was going faster, because it creates a Lorentz force to make sure it keeps this speed while keeping it fast. Power [DUNK]; Omar can release the Balls speed Cap to have it jet off with all its controlled momentum. Unlike most power moves which can’t just be popped out of nowhere without consequences, this move forces Omar to keep forfeiting his Combo Potential at a time to charge a strong move to attacking over time. This move by proxy forces him to keep giving up advantage.

2024.05.09 21:16 gofiend Best practice to enable SSL for your home network without also allowing ingress?

I've had a Omada based network for a year or two now, planning to use it to enable hairpin nat so I can properly access my home network (only from within the network and possibly via Tailscale) internally with https://coolserver1.secret.duckdns.org, but it turns out Omada has recently broken hairpin NAT capabilities in their software stack (which is incredibly annoying).
What is the actual correct way to do this in 2024? The options I've thought about:
This seems like a really basic everybody should want this homelab capability and it really annoys me that there is no simple standard correct way of doing this!
UPDATE:
Ok the consensus is just run a local DNS server (tell your router to use it) and hope that nobody has put in 8.8.8.8 in their dns settings like we used to do in the old days. Thanks all! PS - the fact that business class routers, let alone all routers, don't have a DNS server (or atleast the ability to do local DNS redirects) in 2024 is absurd.

2024.05.08 15:27 Panchovilla1923 Newborn babies and ADHD

BIG DISCLAIMER*: Seeing that this post could come off as a bit of "münchhausen by proxy", and since i myself have sadly seen this kind of behaviour at times in other subs, i feel the need to clarify****: I am not looking to diagnose my child,*** it is way to early for that. I also have not noticed any unusual behaviour or something like that that i want to explain away or rationalize by saying the boy has ADHD, and i have no desire to do so. I also don't want my boy to have ADHD or something similar. I am merely aware of the fact that he has a higher chance of having ADHD compared to a child with parents that do not have ADHD.
***To be clear: My boy is absolutly fine! (***Exept i find the delight he apparently finds in peeing me in the face while i change his diapers a bit concerning. Little runt. ). I see no need whatsoever to tread him differently than anyone would treat their newborn and i am not looking for reasons to do so. This is nothing but curiousity.
So: I myself have a raging case of ADHD (a rather unpleasant one to be honest, i don't want to go into details but lets just say that numerous psychiatrists and therapists have described me as seriously beyond the behaviour of the average ADHD patient, to the point where meds and therapy are seen as not sufficient anymore by the professionals treating me)
I also got myself one of those babies. Little guy's a delight, and i found that some of my ADHD behaviour vibes rather well with the somewhat anarchic schedule of a newborn, although i have to say that he is pretty easy on us when it comes to sleep and respect for our (well... my wifes) biorythm. That his mother is an absolute rock helps a lot too. Downside is that i have somewhat given up on getting myself in order for the time being. Ah well....
Anyway, that's the background. Now the question:
How, if at all, does ADHD manifest in children before the age it is usually diagnosed first (so under 6 or 7 i would say)? Are there any studies for that, maybe even as a byproduct?
I am interested if there ever where any studies that looked at the behaviour of babies that later turned out to have ADHD. Since it is so hereditary, does it influence early behaviour too? Or are babies "all the same" and behaviour that is influenced by ADHD, or that COULD even be influenced by it, is not even a thing in newborns? The pregnancy is a time in which you suddenly talk a lot to your parents about yourself as a baby and how that was, and that suddenly got me interested and made me wonder if my behaviour was different in any way from the "norm" and if that had something to do with ADHD or not. (And i am well aware that, even if i myself behaved differently or not during my early days, it might not have anything to do with ADHD, but with chance, environment, etc. and the same is true for my boy, of course.)
ADHD is highy hereditary (i am sure i got it from my dad, and i am sure it basically killed him, by proxy, but who's to really know, since he was not dignosed and could not bee diagnosed, since he was born before ADHD was really diagnosed, let alone ADHD in adults), and i would not be suprised if my son would get it. And i am pretty chill about this. I believe 90% of why my ADHD sucks the way it does is because it was untreated for over 20 years, even though it was diagnosed (without me knowing it) when i was 7. When my boy will go to school, there will be a lot less stigma from me, from teachers and other people. ADHD is somewhat normalized right now, and if he has it, we can tackle it calmy and consciously, and the approaches are far more nuanced compared to ignoring it or just throwing pills at the kids. I am happy for him if he dodges the bullet, but if he does have it, it is no big deal and I at least know from experience what not to do.

2024.05.06 23:03 Ihavenofslefttogive Path To Nowhere SFW Headcanons Part 4: Shalom

P.S. This is Tagged as spoilers for some pieces of infromation that may be spoilers for those who have not seen or done her interrogation or the Floral Unfurl and RainBurst Events. This is also the first post of mine to break the Character limit so I will be breaking it into two parts.
Link to Part 2: https://www.reddit.com/PathToNowhere/comments/1clu7gw/path_to_nowhere_sfw_headcanons_for_shalom_part_2/
Part 3: https://www.reddit.com/PathToNowhere/comments/1clua8k/path_to_nowhere_sfw_headcanons_for_shalom_part_3/
1. She has many times attempted to usurp Nightingale as the chief’s adjutant in an effort to get closer to the Chief, with her efforts ranging from subtle attempts to discredit Nightingale, to outright attempting to have her transferred to a different Agency, though these efforts have all been in vain.
She has since switched her efforts from removing the Adjutant from play, to making her into an ideal subordinate to aid the Chief and to use as a proxy for her own plans to benefit the Chief, herself, and the rest of the MBCC through a variety of means, some of which have left Nightingale adamant in putting a bullet in the head of whoever is responsible for them.
2. She does not like overly spicy food, something with a little kick is fine, but anything above that is too much for her, a weakness that Coquelic somehow figured out and used against her by lacing one of her meals with a notoriously hot pepper.
Shalom’s yelp of pain as the spice overwhelmed her, and the way her eyes had begun to water as she downed her entire drink before she asked Rahu to get her another one, is an image that has been immortalized in the halls of The Garden via several covertly taken photos and videos.
That the Garden found its flower garden in the Greenhouse dying barely a week later, in addition to the Chief being unable to get her hands on any additional flower seeds to replace the ones they had lost for several months afterwards was certainly just a coincidence…right?
3. She still has a soft spot for Christina despite past…incidents. And while she desires for Christina to make her own path, she still considers her to be her detective, and as such maintains a careful eye on her.
From keeping track of which cases she is working, the threat they pose to her detective, the people she socializes with, her newest interests, her family’s state of affairs, to the way she decorates her room, and so on, she feels at ease knowing that her detective is safe and sound.
She has made it clear to her detective that she will always be present to offer her help should she need it, granted her help tends to come with the requirement of Chris having to spend time with Shalom while she addresses her as ‘Big Sister Shalom’ during said time and allowing the Hush to call her ‘Little Sister’ as well.
As such she is never able to fight the smile that comes to her face when Christina needs her help, especially when she is able to use the chance to pamper her detective and see how far she has grown while on her own.
4. This suggestion came from EinarKaslana on Ao3, the credit for it goes to them.
That said, it is a shared headcanon between us that she is fond of photography, and maintains many photo albums throughout her places of residence, with specific people, such as the Chief, Christina, and Rahu, having entire albums devoted to pictures taken of them by the Hush.
That some of them were taken by cameras they were unaware of is neither here nor there to Shalom, and so long as they remain unaware of them, it will be nothing to them either…especially so long as they do not discover the albums that contain more candid pictures of them in various states of undress or in certain…compromising positions.
It is safe to say that those albums are among her most well hidden and well defended of treasures, with even Schorl being unaware of their location.
5. She has a soft spot for cats and dogs, often leaving out food for them or taking the time to pet and pamper them when she encounters them, as such she was one of the staunchest backers for the MBCC gaining an on site pound/shelter.
That said, she is also an avid fan of cat cafes having dragged Christina and Rahu to enough that they can reliably name the majority of the cat cafes in Dis off the top of their head, with but a few exceptions for those that have yet to have the Hush grace them.
She also tends to leave very sizable tips at said cafes, enough that the staff go out of their way to meet her expectations, and that they do not say a word about her gathering enough cats to cover herself and whoever is with her at the time in them.
6. Her room is surprisingly rather homey, with a number of bookshelves lining the walls, only broken up by small tables or wall fixtures with lamps and candles resting on them, an assortment of dark colored furniture, a large amount of flowers, both in pots on tables and hanging from the ceiling, and a rather sizable collection of horror related media.
She also has a large canopied bed that she has covered in enough pillows that many periodically fall off when anything jostles the bed, and a rather sizable amount of scented candles and incense scattered throughout her room.
Her main outfit of choice, along with several copies of her favorite coat, is kept in a dresser near her bathroom, while a much larger walk-in closet is dedicated to other uniforms and outfits that she has amassed over the years, though they are a subject for later on.
There is also a room that is hidden within her cell, a result of her machinations and of several deals made to allow her skills to be used to benefit the MBCC, said room being filed with a wall of monitors and terminals, a large number of filing cabinets rigged with incendiary devices that she can activate by tapping a button on her terminal, and a sizable amount of targets for her to focus her skills on.
She can never stop herself from chuckling everytime she enters the room, picturing the look on her former handlers faces were they to become aware that the Hush of Paradeisos, has become the Hush of Minos, granted said role is kept secret from the Chief, but it is the thought that counts…at least to her.
7. While there are many Sinners and staff within the bureau that adore Shalom, there are equally as many that hold in her both dread and contempt, be it because they know just Who she is, or because they feel that something is not quite right with her, some sixth sense warning them to avert themselves from aligning so closely with her.
Among those who hold her in disdain are Langley, who has seen enough of the mountain of corpses the Hush has built as an agent of Paradeisos to fully trust her, even with her devotion seemingly to have switched to her rookie.
As a result, the Spider has a special bullet with Shalom’s name written on it for the moment she feels the Hush has become more trouble than she is worth keeping around.
Another one that holds the Hush in contempt is Chameleon, the hypnotist being able to see through the mask that Shalom wears and finding the thing she glimpses beneath it to be of no small amount of concern, hence her own caution in regards to her.
Her trepidation regarding Shalom was only further cemented by the fact that the one time Chameleon attempted to use her power on Shalom resulted in her awakening in her cell with a migraine, a bloodied nose, and a letter reading- “Please, don’t try that again. I would hate to have to explain your loss to the Chief. Sincerely-Shalom”
Of course there is also the Garden and their own wariness of the woman to consider as well, as, while they do admit her actions allowed for them to escape the clutches of the Underground, her methods…have done their perception of her no favors.
Though they can agree with her desire to support the Chief and to safeguard their new home, it does nothing to keep them from having their eyes on her, and a blade marked with her name on it should she overstep her bounds.
While there are many more who feel wariness of the former Hush of Paradeisos, perhaps rivaled but by that of the former leader of Rustifre is that of her own former protegee and pseudo sister, Chirstina.
Having seen first hand just how ruthless her mentor can be, along with having gotten a glimpse as to the true nature of her work for Paradeisos, she has since found that while she yet has a fondness for Shalom, she can never feel as at ease in her presence as she once did due to what she has done, something which is bittersweet to Shalom.
8. She is one of a very select few to have actually beaten Eirene at both normal chess, and a specialized version of it designed by the Head Of Quinn, with her version of chess being something which involves multiple chess boards linked to a rotating table, where the players are playing multiple games simultaneously with but a few moments to make each decision and move.
Said game lasted nearly 12 hours, and ended with Shalom claiming a resounding victory with but minimal losses upon the other boards, a feat which has since earned her no small amount of fame within the bureau, even from her detractors, and a standing offer to play chess with Eirene whenever she wishes to.
9. While she is physically frail, especially for an S-Rank Sinner, she is still heads and shoulders above an average person in terms of speed, strength, and endurance, being as able of breaking bones with a punch as she is ruining someone's life with a few well placed whispers.
That said, she is surprisingly somewhat unaware of the extent of this strength, especially given that she is severely lacking in training for CQC and the usage of firearms and other weaponry, given her preference for remaining on the backlines and using the overwhelming might of Schorl to contend with any foe that gets in her way, and has thus not really had any reason to use it.
Yet even without training, she is still a capable threat should someone get in close, something which has lead to several sinners and staff seeing the surreal scene of her casually flinging a corruptor, that had somehow bypassed Schorl’s scanners, three times her size against a wall before it was vaporized by the aforementioned Paradeisian weapon.
10. She has gained a habit of messing with Schorl by putting stickers and such on it, something which the machine does not seem to enjoy given how it will try and find any way it can to remove the stickers or markings from itself the moment they are applied.
Shalom even once went so far as to write on the Paradeisian device with a pink marker, using it as a means of reminding herself of an appointment she had with Dr. Iron and Nurse Anne regarding her health, with the machine actually allowing the message to be written and to remain…at least until after her appointment, at which point it bore a hole through a water pipe and used it to wash itself off.
Similarly, she once brought up the idea of coloring the Schorl, with the machine and its operators adamantly rejecting the very concept of the idea, going so far as to destroy the can of paint and paint brush that she had purchased to do so before they scurried off.
11. She cannot drive. This is one of the few points of agreement the Chief and Paradeisos have ever been able to reach as Shalom’s driving can lead to no small amount of damage to the vehicle she is behind the wheel of, along with the sanity and health of her passengers.
The last time she attempted to drive she managed to make it a quarter of the way to her destination before Rahu and Christina, both of whom were holding on to one another for dear life, managed to convince her to switch with Rahu while Christina and Schorl spoke with the sherrifs regarding the collateral damage.
They were less than 3 minutes into what should have been a 9 minute long drive at the time.
12. She is fond of dropping by the Chief’s office and helping them with their work whenever the opportunity presents itself, something which has greatly endeared her to the Chief, and, albeit begrudgingly, Nightingale.
That she tends to leave each of these sessions wondering just how it is that the Bureau has not imploded in on itself or declared secession from Dis in some fit of mad lunacy, is something that tends to add some enjoyment to her day by trying to make sense of the insanity of the MBCC.
She has even gone so far as to compile many of the more interesting stories and reports into a personal collection to browse for her own entertainment whenever she feels the need for some levity.
To this day, one of her favorites remains the time that Emp managed to weave so elaborate a lie that it resulted in the FAC spending nearly 4 days investigating a ‘Duck Sinner’ that was responsible for the destruction of a power plant, with the Archer even managing to, albeit unknowingly, have Paradaisos waste several days investigating the same claim when it was relayed to them.
The true culprit of the Power Plant overloading was of course, EMP herself, though Shalom vowed to take that secret to her grave in exchange for the amount of humor her lie gave her.
13. Rahu once attempted to teach her how to use a conventional weapon for self defense, in the event that Schorl was destroyed or disabled and she was not present, only for the attempt to end with Christina having to get her hat repaired courtesy of the bullet ricocheting off of the target, off of the ground between Rahu’s feet, the ceiling above them, the railing of the shooting range, and then into the top of Christina’s hat.
That Langley had the audacity to not only laugh when she heard the report, but to then order Shalom not be allowed to touch any firearms in the Bureau has since been something of a sore spot for the Hush, especially since both Christina and Rahu aid the Spider in enforcing such a rule.
14. While her fondness for the horror genre of film has long been a well established trend in the bureau, with her appreciation for it in literature and art being similarly well known, her fondness for horror games is a relatively new obsession of hers.
Most of this fondness for the horror genre of gaming can be laid at the feet of Etti, who Shalom overheard running a horror themed tabletop session, EMP, who introduced her to horror anime as repayment for lending her a movie, and Nino, who she watched stream a horror game that caught her fascination.
Since then, she has devoured many horror games in terms of both playing them and watching them, with some of the games being of such disturbing levels that even Schorl was driven to escape the room to avoid the more disturbing scenes and gameplay.
That her new fascination has started a trend among the ones in charge of monitoring her via Schorl using the media she enjoys as a form of Test Of Courage, is something she is aware of enough to greatly enjoy.
With her fondness later extending to Tabletop games and the potential for horror and suspenseful storytelling within them as she learned of many of the horror campaigns that had been run by other DMs.
This being something that led to her approaching Etti to request her guidance on the matter, with Etti agreeing to help her DM a horror themed session, the young dragon all too happy to help a fledgling DM in the art of destro-*Ahem* creating an enjoyable session for everyone with minimal tears and screams involved.
That said session she ran resulted in Horo hiding under Zoya’s bed, Christina hiding with Thistle in a closet, Hella and Ninety-Nine refusing to leave their room without ear plugs on as they cursed her to hell and back, was something that lead to Etti declaring Shalom to be her new apprentice in the art of DMing.
The sheer panic that announcement caused nearly brought the Bureau to its knees.
15. Upon learning of Cabernet’s ability to materialize and consume souls, Shalom sought her out with a rather curious request, as she wished for the Franc Heiress to materialize a piece of Shalom’s own soul so that she could taste it out of her own curiosity.
After a rather lengthy debate with the Chief, and several tablets of aspirin, it was decided to allow the experiment of sorts to take place, with Cabernet materializing 2 pieces of Shalom’s soul as a pair of grapes, one being given to the Hush and the other being kept by the Glutton of Souls herself.
Cabernet would later remark that the taste was bizarre, as at first there appeared to be no flavor at all to her grape, only for her to be suddenly hit with an overwhelming bombardment of taste to such an extent she was nearly ill, the heiress later remarking to the Chief that beyond all of the myriad flavors there was something else…a feeling that was unnamable to her, yet left her feeling uneasy for many days afterwards.
Shalom would claim that she enjoyed the taste of the grape as well, though the true joy of the experience seemed to be an idea that had come to her as she would later approach the Glutton with an offer that she would request be kept between the two of them.
What was that offer?
Perhaps it is better off unknown if the way the Franc Heiress refused to leave her room for several days afterwards was anything to go by, and it is likely better still to not question why it is she seems to make a weekly tribute of a grape to the Hush, one that could not possibly have been made with Shalom’s own soul.
Indeed, it is better not to question what was said between the two.
16. She is still in regular contact with, and financially supporting, her former maid from her time at Erica Villa, Rosa.
The young woman having managed to somehow earn the fondness of the former Hush to such an extent that she has been working quite tirelessly to convince the Chief to allow for her to be employed at the Bureau, her main argument being that she could be of great help as part of any of the departments that need her…along with being another at least semi-sane and responsible person to help keep the MBCC in…relatively stable condition.
With each day she makes the argument to the Chief she wears her down more and more until she will be able to have her maid back at her side, and once more enjoy teaming up with her to make Rahu, and soon the Chief, as flustered as possible with their shared teasing.
17. She is not allowed any form of caffeine, a rule Paradeisos ‘forgot’ to inform the Chief of when Shalom was sent to the Bureau, with Rahu and Christina thinking the Hush herself or Schorl would have informed the Chief of this rule…only to learn that was not the case.
Indeed, the Chief learned of this rule when someone, she is willing to bet her life that it was either Hella or EMP, saw that the former Hush looked tired and offered her some of Summer’s Special Brew Coffee.
What happened next is something known but to those who were there that day and who managed to gain access to the security footage, something which was soon locked behind the highest grade of confidentiality that Paradeisos could create, with the files being further encrypted by Summer and Langley as well.
Any attempts at acquiring an answer from those who witnessed what happened that day would be met with nothing but a thousand-mile stare, with several others whimpering and curling into the fetal position or turning and fleeing as swiftly as they can, with none daring to vocalize just what happened that day.
All anyone knows is that a substantial portion of the bureau needed repair done to it, several officials that had been adamantly against the Chief and the MBCC had to resign from their positions in disgrace once certain information regarding them was leaked, along with a rather sizable amount of collateral damage being done to several major roadways and side streets.
Schorl has since been given permission to destroy any source of caffeine Shalom manages to get her hands on.
18. She has been utilizing her abilities to commune with the Mania Monster made of her discarded humanity known as Rebel in a bid to earn its compliance and to be assemble to utilize it to its fullest one day, her primary reason for doing so being something of an emergency measure should Paradeisos attempt to remove her from play along with having an emergency ace in the hole for rainy days.
That it could be an additional tool for the Chief and a means of further defending her should anything befall the Hush, the monster having long made clear its own deep seated adoration for the Chief to her during their…’Conversations’, is but yet another lie she has come to tell herself.
That she also wants to reconnect with her lost humanity and to try and bond with it is something she has tried time and again to deny even to herself, yet as time has gone by, and her emotions have begun to return to her, she has found it increasingly hard to deny her true reason for wishing to do so.
The truth of the matter…is that all of this is being driven by Her ability to feel the loneliness of that missing part of herself and her desire to end it and fill the gaping wound torn in her own soul all those years ago by Paradeisos.
All she truly wants is to feel whole again.
19. She has an odd relationship with Hecate, somewhere between an almost sisterly bond and that of a mentor, with the former Hush often volunteering to accompany the younger sinner into the field to act as a mentor to her, that she still unconsciously tries to protect her is something neither will directly mention to one another.
The pair have likewise somewhat exchanged hobbies with Shalom managing to get Hecate interested in the horror genre, while Hecate has managed to convince Shalom to take up sketching and, to a lesser degree, painting as a hobby, something the Hush has taken the somewhat relaxed leash and observation she is under during her stay in the bureau to thoroughly enjoy.
That most of her works feature the Chief, several even having her in a state of undress or in various…compromising positions, is something that only the Hush and Hecate, who happened to mistake her sketchbook for an empty one, knows of.
It is safe to say the following exchange was quite awkward for the pair, though they were eventually able to work past it and continue their regular sessions of shared artistic endeavor…with the addition of a rather bright tag to mark which sketchbook is Shalom’s.
In a similar vein, Shalom has taken a rather sizable amount of time in teaching Hecate how to think strategically and to plan for various scenarios, with the young Sinner having shown a marked improvement in her Dispatches as result of the tutoring, that the Chief saw fit to praise Shalom was simply a bit of icing on the cake to her.
That said, many Sinner feel no small amount of unease at the idea of the Hush having taken the Chief’s Shadow under her wing, especially given the uncanny similarities the pair seem to share, the only comfort most have been able to find in the matter being their shared loyalty to the Chief.
Though even so, most fear the idea of just what Hecate could become if Shalom is allowed to mold her enough, thus all of those within the Bureau tend to keep an eye on the pair whenever they are together and they can.
20. She has mapped out the vast majority of the secret tunnels that span the Bureau, particularly all of the ones that lead to the kitchens and to the Chief’s room, with her making use of them to not only be able to sneak away to the kitchen for late night snacks or when she needs a drink during her work, with her also using the tunnels to deliver snacks to the Chief and to surprise her when she is working.
She also makes use of them to avoid certain parties and to surprise others, with her usage of them having gotten to the point that a not so small number of Sinners and staff are of the opinion that she is in possession of some form of teleportation device.
That Shalom seems to find some humor in these rumors and even tends to encourage them through her own actions and inactions has likewise led to no small amount of confusion and unease among the Sinner population due to the potential threat she could pose with such a device.
The Chief has tried time and again to dispel these rumors, only for them to constantly re-emerge after enough time has passed, something which has led to the Chief and the rest of the administration staff of the Bureau nearing the end of their rope in regards to how to handle the spreading rumors, with Paradeisos offering no help on the matter.
21. She has found something of a way to utilize her “Mark” in tandem with the Chief’s Shackles, a method of piggybacking off of the Shackles and utilizing her ability in a way that makes it considerably less obvious towards both the recipient of the ‘Mark’ and the Chief herself that one is under the Hush’s influence.
Even with this loophole removing her need for direct eye contact with her targets among the Sinners, it still requires for the targets to be in a heightened emotional state, and for the Chief to not be aware of her actions due to her ability to sense the influence through the Shackles and throttle it before it truly spreads.
The knowledge of this influencing power is strictly confidential so as to prevent any panic from spreading among the Sinners, especially among those who have prior experience with the Hush and her power., with the Chief having further heightened her security around the Hush, despite her claims of only wishing to use her power to aid the Chief.
That said, the loophole has a further weakness in that Sinners of strong enough will, or those who are particularly Contaminated, such as Nox, Dreya, and so on, can not only resist the influence of the Mark through this loophole, but can also somewhat retaliate against it, causing Shalom a sizable amount of pain when they do so, Nox’s own retaliation leading to her having a severe nosebleed and being near catatonic for several hours.
The final weakness of this ability is that she requires time to focus on the Shackles, and the slightest of disturbances can interrupt her ability, with contact with the chief being an additional means of furthering her power’s stability, though since this loophole came to her awareness she has made certain to be on her guard around her the vast majority of the time.
A final note is that by some means she has been able to keep this development secret from Paradeisos, using it as yet another tool in whatever schemes of rebellion she harbors against the organization.
22. She has given Thistle the equivalent to ‘The Shovel Talk’, with the exception of her talk involving her simply sitting in silence for a while as she looked Thistle in the eye, smiling as a triangle Mark flared in her eye as an unspoken warning of what awaits the assassin if anything befalls Christina.
Thistle’s reply simply being to lift up her sword and set it alight with her own silent vow, that should any of the Hush’s schemes cause harm to the detective, she would not live long enough to enjoy whatever form of victory she managed to achieve.
That the Hush has the audacity to smile at her actions a low chuckle slipping past her lips as she finished her tea before rising and walking past the assassin, pausing but to ruffle Thistle’s hair with an amused glint in her eyes as she left the assassin, only caused her to further despise the woman even if they could agree on protecting Christina.
That Thistle collapsed back into her chair as she fought to control her heart beat and suppress the adrenaline tearing through her body after Shalom had left the room, is something that she will deny ever happened that day.
23. She has met Christina’s step sister several times, each time ending in her being chased out of the house courtesy of the wheelchair bound girl either throwing objects at her or swatting at her with something as she tells her to stay away from Christina.
That said, she has not stopped her attempts at somewhat courting the young woman’s favor, having arranged for, and personally done, many things to make life easier for the young woman, such as aiding in her finding a stable source of income from home, and ensuring that she and Christina are able to visit whenever they wish.
Even with all that she has done however, the young woman still does not trust her, and does her best to try and mitigate any influence Shalom has over her, that said, she does appreciate Shalom’s efforts and has at least allowed for them to chat for more than 30 minutes before she starts chasing her out of her home.
24. While Shalom can be said to have a rather refined palate, she does also have a taste for more simple foods as well, especially given that Paradeisos did not allow her to indulge in them before due to her needing to maintain an image as their Envoy and their close monitoring of her.
As a result of this, and the somewhat increased freedom she has at the Bureau, she has gained the habit of searching for small hole in the wall restaurants and such to dine at with the Chief, Rahu, or Christina, with her having gained a reputation as an exceptionally generous patron.
More than once, Rahu has been caught off guard by seeing staff greet the former Hush by name and show her to her favored seat in the establishment, one time of note involving a rather portly chef who was easily double Rahu’s own size and weight leaving the kitchen to greet Shalom with an embrace as he sat her down and spoke with her for a little bit before going to cook her meal.
She has even tried some of the more exotic foods brought back by Wolverine from his hunts, such as the meat of Sand Worms, which she claims has an oddly gamey flavor to it that is not that unpleasant, and a form of lizard that she actually quite liked the taste of, much to everyone’s shock.
That said, she did refuse to even look at the scorpions and other multi-legged insectoid like creatures the Hunter caught, due in part to a reason that will be touched on below.
To Be Continued in Second Part due to 40,000 character Limit.

2024.05.05 19:59 JellyRobotFactory How to restart/rebuild server

So Plex has been a huge pain in my ass the past 24 hours. Last night the PC and web app stopped connecting to my server out of nowhere. I tried everything on the troubleshoot page and it didn't work. VPN isn't on, no proxies, nothing. I even uninstalled and re-installed the app, still didn't work. Restarted my PC. Nope. So today, I bit the bullet and just deleted the whole server in hopes of re-building it, but it won't even let me do that now. When I select ad"Your Media" it just has a button to "Get Plex" which redirects me to download Plex, which I already have installed. What am I doing wrong here? This app is driving me up the wall and it's making me want to switch to another service. Thanks.

Amazed at the quality!
I couldn't find any rules about posting about other sites so if this is in violation, please feel free to take it down.
I used to be a believer in mtgproxies products simply because of how basic the UI was and it was just "easy" but always had issues with the print quality. Multiple cards I got from multiple orders from them would be dark enough that if you didn't take minute to look at the card properly, it would be almost entirely unrecognizable. One of the worst offenders was a Beladros Witherbloom that literally just looked like black and green blob. After finally having enough of just "bad cards", I decides to bite the bullet and figure out MPCFill and place an order.
First thing I wanna bring up is the cost is literally half of what it was with mtgproxies. Most orders at mpcproxies I had were around $50~ for 50~ cards. Always told myself "most cards im proxying are $5+ so technically I'm saving money". It wasnt until I finally finished my MPC order and saw that a 124 card bundle was gunna cost me only $46 after shipping. This made me skeptical of the quality of the cards but when they finally showed up I was insanely impressed. The colors are near perfect and the card quality feels almost identical to a real card compared to what I got from the other site.
All in all, I think I've found the best proxies my money can buy. A solid 9/10 purchase.

2024.04.30 18:13 BoomM8 Swarm or k8s? Doubts about maintainability, efficiency and compatibility

Hi all! I am a fairly experienced homelabber, and a pretty experienced developer (backend/robotics). I am currently moving from a rented vps that I had for years and a couple of RPis to a single big server in my home. I run proxmox and for main workload basically have 3 vms - truenas, one for databases and such on a fast ssd, and other for apps in docker containers, with a huge nfs share mounted from TrueNAS for storage (nextcloud and so on). Now, I am choosing an orchestrator for all the containers.
Previously I just ran a bunch (10-15) of docker-compose stacks (one folder with a docker-compose.yml and data for each app). Now I am torn between continuing basically doing the same, but this time with docker swarm to connect 2 vms, which should be fast and painless, or biting the bullet and learning kubernetes. My reservations about k8s are the following:
And last and minor issue is, of course, time investment. I moved away from backend, but still would like to toy with k8s one day, but I am not sure if migrating all the important apps I use to it is the right time to learn.
I would be happy to hear your suggestions!
P.S. Despite years as a backend dev, I've never actually worked with k8s directly before. We used docker for dev, and prod was entirely in devops jurisdiction. And these days I do not do any backend work at all. Also, English is not my first language, so I apologize for any mistakes.

RGB++ Bitcoin Tweet
A rather long epic tweet translated into English;

Recently, the BTC derivatives market seems to be in a dilemma: 1) The expected big turnaround after BTC halving has not yet arrived; 2) The wealth creation effect after the launch of Runes protocol is not as expected; 3) The BTC layer2 focus project Merlin is temporarily silent after TGE. However, while they are all waiting to "let the bullets fly", I am more bullish @NervosNetwork
. Why? Next, let me talk about my opinion: In my opinion, there are currently two major problems in the BTC derivative ecosystem market:
  1. Native RGB Lightning Network, EVM-Compatible, and UTXO isomorphic binding chain share the market, and there is no main line layer2 direction yet;
  2. The issuance of Ordinals, Brc20, Arc20, Runes and other assets has fallen into a dead end where the more the technology improves, the weaker the wealth creation effect, because the fundamental problem of poor liquidity has not been solved;
While the Builders are still competing for supremacy, the Marketing side has already backfired and collapsed due to high expectations.
The current BTC ecosystem must deliver results in solving the liquidity problem of layer 1 derivative assets. Therefore, the Bitcoin derivatives market urgently needs to develop a closed-loop layer 2 solution that can be quickly formed in terms of technical architecture, market operations, and ecological implementation. The implementation of native RGB protocol and Lightning Network is too slow, and many EVM-Compatible protocol frameworks are still under construction.
In comparison, only CKB public chain, as a paradigm of UTXO isomorphic binding chain, is gradually "accelerating" the implementation of the market's imagination of BTC layer2: RGB++, UTXO Stack, Lightning Network, DOB assets, full-chain games and other landing ecosystems are emerging one by one.
In the short term, the CKB public chain can provide a quick “training exercise” for the BTC layer2 industry, allowing everyone to see that BTC derivative assets on the first layer can be expanded and circulated in the Turing-complete environment of the second layer; in the long term, CKB may be able to rely on its inherent technical advantages of “isomorphic binding” to establish a UTXO-structured layer2 mainstream unified market for the BTC layer2 market.
The fundamental reason why CKB public chain can do this is that the UTXO Cell model of the CKB chain itself can include tokens, JavaScript codes, JSON strings, smart contracts and a complete Bitcoin UTXO state. Therefore, the CKB public chain can be regarded as a complete off-chain state machine of the BTC mainnet.
It can synchronously store all states that occur on the BTC mainnet, which is equivalent to an extended DA layer of the BTC mainnet. It runs all calculations based on its Turing completeness, which is equivalent to a high-performance VM execution layer. The isomorphic binding characteristics of its UTXO structure provide secure interoperability for BTC.
In simple terms, if we assume that the BTC mainnet can only do asset settlement, CKB has taken care of the extended functionality such as the DA layer, execution layer, and interoperability. It is precisely because of this foundation that CKB has achieved some things that are difficult to implement on the BTC original chain, such as RGB and Lightning Network.
Taking RGB as an example, its complete implementation requires some off-chain clients to store part of the "state" respectively, and then send a Commitment commitment (a Hash calculated by hashing the original state data) to the main network through a one-time sealing technology. The commitment contains the spending conditions of UTXO, cannot be tampered with, and can only be triggered by another matching commitment to "unlock".
If Alice wants to send BTC assets to Bob through the RGB protocol, Alice initiates a commitment agreement that Bob can unlock the UTXO for spending. After receiving the commitment, the BTC full node will wait for another corresponding commitment to be unlocked. When the two commitments match, a UTXO spending (settlement) of the main chain is realized. Therefore, for the RGB client verification system, the key lies in the fact that independent P2P individuals such as Alice and Bob must each maintain a "state copy" and prove to the main network online that they legally own a certain state. The asset division is completed by matching the old commitments and updating the status of the new commitments. The problem is that in order for these individuals to have this kind of collaboration ability, a very complete "infrastructure" is usually required. The crux of the RGB protocol network's inability to be implemented on a large scale at this stage is that it is too difficult to build this infrastructure to uniformly manage the status, requests, and communications of off-chain clients. The CKB public chain itself has the ability to store DA states and has the interoperability of isomorphic binding.
If this difficult infrastructure project is replaced by the existing CKB chain, wouldn’t the problem of RGB client verification be solved? That’s right, this is the fundamental reason why RGB++ came into being. Following this line of thought, the payment network of the state channel model, the Lightning Network, can also be implemented on the CKB public chain. After all, the crux of the Lightning Network is also the problem of interactive state management between the decentralized Lightning Network nodes. Imagine that if the originally decentralized and complex off-chain operation "black box" can be efficiently implemented on an existing public chain, the landing and application process will naturally be faster. For example, state channel cycle management, UTXO account and settlement, on-chain state storage, P2P communication simplification, etc.
Taking the issuance of Inscription assets as an example, the inscription assets originally issued on the BTC L1 mainnet fell into an extremely high-cost turnover and low circulation state after the MINT under the Fomo trend. How can these assets be efficiently circulated with the help of the CKB public chain?
  1. Issue and mint inscription assets on the mainnet first. You can also mint through the CKB network, but the CKB public chain actually serves as a "proxy" for infrastructure, helping users send transaction mint inscription assets from the CKB public chain to the mainnet;
  2. All inscription assets will coexist on the BTC mainnet and CKB. When the mainnet inscription asset Mint is successful, asset twinning can be achieved through Leap's trusted L1 and L2 interoperability. CKB's DA network will become a huge "indexer" to manage shadow assets;
  3. These shadow assets can be circulated at low cost on the CKB public chain based on the interaction method of RGB++ (one-time sealed commitment). When the user Leaps the mainnet assets to the CKB public chain, the shadow assets represent the original assets on the CKB public chain for efficient circulation in DeFi, games and other application ecosystems. CKB will fully record every state change record and complete the state update on the mainnet when the user requests to Leap the assets back to the mainnet. (It is understandable that the handling fee of Mint occurs on the mainnet, but the subsequent circulation interaction on the CKB chain can greatly reduce the handling fee.
In my opinion, the CKB public chain itself is a UTXO structure layer2 with a complete technical framework. Its Cell model can be isomorphically bound to the UTXO on BTC, allowing BTC and CKB layer2 to achieve asset interoperability Leap without a cross-chain bridge (not migration, but abstractly understood as quantum entanglement state synchronization). In addition, the high performance of the CKB chain itself in executing Turing-complete contracts will make up for the problem that UTXO cannot achieve state management of ownerless contracts.
How to do it? Because CKB's Cell state has global management capabilities, if there is a conflict in the state of different Cells, such as two usage commitments with conflicting states, CKB will reject the issuance of one of the Cell commitments to protect the security of asset state updates. In essence, this is a reflection of the strong programmability of the CKB public chain. It should be noted that Ethereum's layer 2 solution Plasma cannot achieve similar Turing-complete expansion. Therefore, if I want to accelerate the implementation of BTC layer2, I will vote for the camp representing UTXO isomorphic binding. Although the CKB public chain is a successful UTXO paradigm BTC layer2, how can it represent the mainstream camp alone?
Therefore, CKB launched the UTXO Stack to expand the scale of its camp. This situation is like when Vitalik said that ZK-Rollup is the final outcome and everyone rushed to the ZK field to build layer2. If Satoshi Nakamoto jumped out and said that UTXO isomorphic binding is the orthodoxy of BTC Layer2, it is estimated that UTXO Stack will also become the basic framework for the rapid construction and deployment of layer2 in the ecosystem. The implementation of the UTXO Stack strategy is very much like a strategic upgrade of OP Stack to OP-Rollup, which will soon bring the layer2 paradigm of the UTXO structure into more mainstream vision.
Above In short, the recent coldness of the secondary market will bring some pressure to the builders of the primary market. Previously, the chaos of the BTC layer2 market was also regarded as prosperity, but after calming down, the lack of standards, norms, mainstream narratives, and core problem solutions (liquidity) of BTC layer2 will become a difficult problem that must be overcome.
Therefore, the downturn of Runes has undoubtedly given the UTXO isomorphic binding camp represented by the CKB public chain a "send east wind" moment.
Note: This article is purely from the perspective of technical logic, and is a call for the UTXO isomorphism binding to BTC layer2 represented by the CKB public chain. It is not intended as a reference for secondary market investment advice. If you want to have a more systematic and comprehensive understanding of CKB, RGB++, isomorphic binding, and UTXO Stack, you can subscribe to web3Caff’s research report:

2024.04.29 03:40 Storms_Wrath The Human Artificial Hivemind Part 505: Alien Minds

First Previous Wiki
Admiral Tenrah returned to the battle map, looking at all the various icons and routes to and from star systems. So far, the Sennes Armada was keeping its pace mostly on track. The delay due to the diplomats from the Misan Li Heptarchies no longer would matter.
King Siran had pulled back from the battlefront against the High Federation in an attempt to pivot to the Hive Union. He had won the battle, but the stragglers included the remaining leadership of the High Federation anyway, so they could continue to remain somewhat organized. The massive civil war would soon spill into a more international affair, due to the King's rhetoric. But that was entirely his fault when he so strongly advocated for the deaths of Cawlarians who had lived on planets for generations that he happened to desire.
And he would not let his name be stained with even the suggestion of a loss. The Battle Planner and Fleet Commander Annabelle Weber were also now on their way to the front, and the diplomats from the Heptarchies were tagging along. Phoebe was in discussions with them now, and supposedly there'd been a few breakthroughs on that front. Whatever she'd promised them or get them to agree to, the fleet buildup along the Hive Union's border with the Heptarchies was slowing.
The Interstellar Gathering seemed to have realized no amount of bluffing would get the High King out of war. Even if he was a proxy force aligned with them, King Siran was not valuable enough for them to risk a wider war. It was just as Tenrah had expected and had told Eyahtni, Kawtyahtnakal, and the Patriarchs when he'd met with them several days ago. Just as a young hatchling couldn't be allowed to stray too far from the nest, there was simply no sense for the Heptarchies to risk economic ruin.
Orith and those who ruled over him would shift their tone while pretending it was a natural decision, not one they'd been forced to make to align with reality.
"I must commend your tactics in the latest training exercise," Tenrah said, ruffling his feathers slightly before respectfully nodding to Annabelle.
"I am pleased to hear such high praise from you, Admiral," the woman said. She was fully dressed in her regulation spacesuit, meaning most of her face was obscured. But Tenrah wouldn't complain since it was more than prudent to be ready for anything. The next unknown ships might not be friendly.
He had also looked into the parties responsible for the lack of communication or warning of the Misan's arrival. As it turned out, general incompetence was to blame. A receiver hadn't been properly calibrated, so the transmission signal had just been noise. He'd given the officer in charge of that an earful before eventually letting up and telling him to do better. A personal visit with the Admiral was one thing. But a second personal visit was quite another.
Tenrah drew a vector toward some of the outer systems controlled by the High King. A few garrison forces were there, but they would be swept away almost instantly. What most concerned him was the shipyards in the region that received most of their metals from a select group of planets in those systems. They were rich in the metals required to forge the alloys needed in the High King's fleet.
The High Federation had been something of a dumping ground for either overthrown species or other alien species that had been deported from their homeworlds before the war broke out. This was reflected in the number of species inhabiting the worlds, each with unique names, traits, and temperaments.
"We plan on taking this path, and then splitting to conquer these systems and disable their metal exporting abilities," he explained. "Then we will move to this system."
He zoomed in more and drew a new vector from where the previous one ended. "We have intelligence that they have at least four planet crackers there. Brey will send FTL suppression satellites through portals on the outer edges, with her portals boosted by our psychic amplifier fields. we will be able to take over the system quickly, and begin the process of either disabling the planet crackers or moving them back to our territory."
"We will need to know the angles the superweapons are at before committing to the battle," Annabelle said. "Otherwise, judging by the trajectory cone you have, we can bypass them entirely and reach Siran within two weeks."
"And that is an interesting proposal. Can you lay out your plan, in that case?"
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =
Annabelle did so. She and Tenrah discussed the strategy's risks, and they eventually decided that such a tactic, while bold, wouldn't do what they set out to do: ensure the safety of the Cawlarians near the border. They were already trying to evacuate from the coming war front, but cities and planets were large things that took a lot of time to completely empty.
And more garrison forces, whether they were androids from Phoebe or specialized and highly trained defenders from the Union, were still moving in as the civilians evacuated. Kawtyahtnakal had established a fund for them, but many people were too stubborn to leave. Despite the looming threat of war and possible massacre, they still refused to board the passenger ships. Annabelle could respect their tenacity and courage, though she personally believed it was counterproductive.
A few encroaching splinters of Siran's fleet had already struck the evacuation forces. He'd sent around 2% of his ships away to harass all the border systems within reach in an attempt to get the Armada bogged down in defense. But with such small forces and the Union on such high alert, all of the important stations with weak shields were well within the protective layers of planetary shields in the area.
Larger garrisons than necessary were still required, of course, but Tenrah had managed to navigate the desperate concerns of the Feathers and those like them in charge of governing their planets with his natural political skill. He didn't need to ask them for favors because, as an Admiral, he alone held power over how his portion of the fleet would respond. Annabelle had witnessed that loyalty and control well within the organization of his fleet. Even at his advanced age, she continued to be impressed with his adaptability and skill at monitoring three-dimensional battle planes and fields.
She pointed to the cone of possible directions Siran was expected to take. They were generally adjacent to the border, though they would head around the left side of the territory he claimed from the Union. If he reached it, millions of lives would be lost every day. Once he broke the shields entirely, the planets would be utterly glassed down to their mantles.
She'd read up on his methods and had seen videos of them in action. Despite all her training, it still was haunting. The hivemind helped to soothe her when the unpleasant parts of command sizzled up to meet her in the middle of the night.
But they would not impede her on the field of battle. When she went to war, the hivemind suppressed all that wasn't necessary for the mission. It was their agreement, one which she'd asked of it. And being a node of the network meant that her stability was paramount, even more so than her title as Fleet Commander. For if she fell, others could take her place. Protocols ensured and demanded that.
But her place in the hivemind was what allowed it to have any strength this far out. It could form avatars and help with long-range communications, though the main mind back on Earth and Luna obviously remained disconnected from this distance.
"I would normally agree with you, Fleet Commander, but I am reminded of your tactic to use decoy hard light holograms."
"They will suspect that any ships heading right for the barrels, or close enough, are either not valued enough or are the decoys."
"Then all you have to do is make them impossible to ignore," Tenrah said. "I can lend you bombs capable of remaining armed and capable of being triggered inside of hard light holograms, even with jamming involved. Then, they will be unable to ignore them, and the explosions generated would destroy the shields in place around the planet crackers. If they fire the weapons, then the residual magnetic interference will allow us to destroy them, since the shields will be far weakened."
Annabelle could see the potential brilliance of the strategy. But it was just that- potential. In space, there were no obstacles. Without stealth fields, there was no hiding. And with hard light holograms, stealth was obviously off-limits.
They would be left approaching from angles that they would be unable to adapt to. She had her VI plot several routes but was unsatisfied, so she had Edu'frec link into the network to do it. Phoebe had been replaced after contacting a Sprilnav network to ensure she could scrub any programs that may have gotten through to her without distraction.
It would be a terrible thing for a Sprilnav AI to make it to her dreadnaught, for sure.
"We will likely need a threefold diversion at least," Annabelle said. "Maybe fourfold, if we can spare the forces, and brave any minefields that may exist."
"Well," Tenrah began. He pulled up a few schematics of the weapons her dreadnaught carried. "I believe you can solve the minefield issue from a distance, even with the lightspeed limit. After all, they can't move easily. As for the actual attack? I suggest a sixfold flower formation, with a twisting wings accent."
"You will have to show me a diagram of that," Annabelle said, grasping uselessly at the unfamiliar words. Before their integration had begun, there had been a limit to how much doctrine she could memorize.
Tenrah pulled up an image of an alien flower blooming with six petals. And then the image faded, overloading with a stylized ribbon of red shapes. The ribbons spun on their sides every thirty seconds, like corkscrews that were flatter.
"And in this case, the ribbons represent the drone formations. I can send a few carriers into the battle with fighter escorts, though we will need to keep them spread out to avoid any direct lines of sight from the planet crackers."
"I heavily doubt they will waste such shots on carriers," Annabelle said. "And if you commit more, you will overwhelm their defenses. I believe your drones are highly reflective, so only missiles and bullets can deal sufficient damage at the involved speeds and numbers we are working with here."
She tapped the diagram, shifting it by about 45 degrees.
"I believe I can fit a stealth force here, which will engage the back defenses of the planet crackers once they focus their shields frontward. I can likely get a full battlecruiser group in, and if you can press in as a wedge around 10 million kilometers above me from where I come in, and around 30 million kilometers below," Annebelle paused to draw the vectors with her hands, "Then it will aid in my ability to subdue them. It would likely shorten the battle time from a week down to four days."
"Assuming their detection satellites are not capable of seeing it."
"And we will target those too. I believe the first strike can fall on those, since the planet crackers will interfere with their ability to scan behind themselves, and such large power signatures can be noted."
"There is one more problem," Tenrah said. "We are generally working on the assumption of trying to capture these ships, yes?"
"Yes," Annabelle said.
"Then will we board them?"
"Yes, but no. Edu'frec and Phoebe's commando androids will open up the beach heads on the physical surfaces of the planet crackers, while our specialized mental warfare agents will take the fight to them in the mindscape. I assume you have your own plans in that regard?"
"It depends on how we will split the planet crackers. There are 12 in the system. Half and half?"
"That seems prudent," Annabelle replied. She selected the ones that would be most advantageous for her various gambits and strategies to work. They were closer together, which meant more capacity for coordination, mutual aid, and shielding. But it also meant a larger target, one which she could hit from many vectors without worrying about each enemy ship having a wide field of view. Some battlecruisers and cruiser groups were scattered around, but they were not enough to resist the Armada. And once Siran was robbed of a quick way to end the war, the Union would hold the upper hand, capable of committing devastating power to a fleet that remained in a system for a long time.
Yet the same was true for the Union and the Alliance. If the battle took too long, or their command positions were located, then the terrible might of the planet cracker beams would be turned upon them instead. Annabelle's dreadnaught was powerful. More so than all the ones before it. But that didn't mean she wanted to test her shields against alien planet crackers.

Penny was talking to a group of freed slaves on Justicar. These were recent ones who still held quite a bit of trauma. They'd taken to calling her 'Liberator' despite her never identifying herself as such. It was oddly endearing and did make her feel quite a bit better. It was good to just be able to go out and help people.
She felt some perturbations in the mindscape but ignored them. Right now, she needed to ensure that the gangs couldn't continue their horrific industry. She'd taken out most of their heavy equipment and was now waiting for the Guides to finish searching.
Sirens and alarms echoed in the distance. Penny sent psychic energy into her eyes, but she was too far underground to see anything without using the energy itself instead of light to see. Justicar's mind seemed busy, so she couldn't connect with him. As time went on, Penny felt that something was wrong. It was a gut feeling that she couldn't place. But because of that, she was on edge. She made a large shield of psychic energy above them.
She held it for several minutes. Nothing happened, but Penny wouldn't let it down that quickly. Justicar still didn't respond. Her communicator rang. Kashaunta was calling.
"What's going on?" Penny asked.
"The Grand Fleet is-"
Light and heat smashed into her, easily breaking through her shields. She briefly saw tens of thousands of Sprilnav burning before the light overwhelmed her eyes. Her communicator was destroyed. The onslaught was accompanied by a monstrous level of sound. Shockwaves drilled Penny into the melting and fracturing ground, forcing her lower and lower into expanding pools of magma and liquid metal.
The city's upper layers fell upon her, crashing with great and terrible force. But Penny was now fully reinforced with psychic and conceptual energy. She erupted furiously from the rubble. The air around her burned with heat as she continued to accelerate. The armor plates now surrounding her glowed cherry red, but they were white by the time she'd reached space.
She reached the first planetary shield.
"Displace," Penny growled. She forced reality to move as she willed and to place herself where she saw fit. The Grand Fleets were high above, firing upon a small group of ships that had detached from Azeri's fleet. They seemed to be directly attacking the broken-off contingent and not Justicar itself.
So Penny increased her eyesight and analyzed the battle in both real space and the mindscape. Nilnacrawla helped her identify Justicar's targets. The massive Elder was angrier than she'd ever seen him, and his size, which was even larger than Tetelali, made that incarnation of him appear more like a god of wrath. She saw him brutally tear through groups of minds desperately running to avoid him.
She could faintly see spheres of psychic and conceptual energy area denial fields. From this distance, the flagships' strength was truly impressive. Both of them were at least ten times as powerful as Azeri's had been during their battle. It was clear both Kashaunta and Valisada had ordered upgrades.
Then, her attention came to the dreadnaught, which seemed to be at the head of the attack. Penny explored the ship with her psychic power, pushing aside all resistance. Several lasers struck her, but she ignored them, denying their impact in reality against her own.
It glowed with the fury of weapons firing. Missiles and fighters flowed out of its bays. Bullets, nukes, and lasers streamed from red-hot gun barrels. A nuke hit her but didn't explode. She ripped it apart, using the materials to add energy to her reserves.
Justicar continued to go in inside the mindscape. He tore at them like a shark at a school of minnows in a coral reef. His ravenous anger and hatred were frightening, but Penny rapidly got used to it. Calling up her own memories of the innocent people who'd been killed for no reason, Penny wrapped herself in energy and began to erase her signature from the area.
Fighters flew past her, no longer hitting her psychic shields with bullets. Lasers stopped firing at her since she'd moved from her last position, and there was no longer anything for them to track. Penny floated in the stars, with bright blooms of white fusion explosions blossoming around her. And so she moved forward. She reached a cruiser. She reached forward, teleporting past its shields, and shut down the ship's reactor by teleporting all of its fuel into the void.
Soon, a missile from Kashaunta's Grand Fleet found the vessel, and it vanished in another sphere of heat and light. Of course, it was all silent in space. Penny could only hear her heart beating and occasional warnings from Exile or Nilnacrawla at incoming attacks. Exile occupied the area in her ears, which felt weird, but it allowed him to speak without showing himself in the mindscape. Given his nature and the fact that the Grand Fleets likely had detections for speeding space entities, it would be a terrible idea for him to appear there. Nilnacrawla continued to help Penny with the mental aspects of the battle.
He processed the energy input and output that Penny was giving off in the hopes of keeping her off the sensors of the dreadnaught battlegroup. She didn't want to attract the full focus of one of those massive guns. The explosions on Justicar would have been capable of cracking apart a mountain range if not for the extensive dampening Justicar's shields had done. And she'd withstood them only because she could shunt off most of their impact into reality, leaning into her conceptual nature and the nature of Cardinality to escape certain death.
Even with her power, as high as it had ever been, the blow she was taking were the most powerful physical impacts she'd ever endured.
She also suspected Yasihaut's work in this, though she had nothing to prove. She also had to remain vigilant about the Judgment. She couldn't take overly hostile actions, so she didn't just teleport the Sprilnav in the area out of their ships. She tried it on a smaller scale, and a weak pressure from the dreadnaught made her power fail to affect them.
But those Sprilnav were still doomed to die by their commander. But Penny didn't wish to doom the Alliance and herself by taking their deaths into her own hands. And she was stained with enough blood, metaphorical and literal. The ashes of the people she'd freed had fallen away with her ascent into the atmosphere, but the gritty memory and feel of them never would.
Once again, she'd been powerless to save those who'd needed her. And if she'd had that power, what could she have really done? Would she have been forced to stand there and take it? Or could she have really fought back in a way that wouldn't be turned against her in the Judgment? And was she wrong for considering all of that during such a horrendous time, when she'd literally seen thousands of people turned to slag and ash before her very eyes just ten minutes ago?
Penny burned with shame and grief. She hated this. She hated that things always turned to this. Why couldn't the galaxy just leave people alone? Why did there have to be so much suffering? Her anger threatened to overwhelm her, but with a herculean effort from her, Nilnacrawla, and Cardi, it was beaten back.
Penny felt Justicar getting close to breaking through the shield. She sent a small jolt of power to its underside. A thick bolt of psychic lightning infused with rage leaped from her arms, shattering the shield completely and taking roughly half her power. In the dreadnaught, the antimatter reactor she could sense radiating its energy suddenly lost all coolant access.
She pushed her psychic energy into herself and her conceptual energy into words that she harmonized into existence with the force and might of her will.
"Cardinality: One to zero. Reversal."
A heap of her energy left her instantly, stopping a budding explosion from ripping the dreadnaught apart. Justicar absolutely ravaged whoever was inside that ship, including what appeared to be a leader figure in the mindscape. Penny watched Justicar smash the Elder's corpse in his jaws and tear his soul from his body before shredding it violently with a contraption that looked straight out of a horror movie.
She let the explosion go, and so it went. The dreadnaught cracked in half. The Grand Fleets, which had never stopped firing, finally broke through the shields as the circuits failed to supply them with power. Hundreds of thousands of lives winked out instantly, torn to subatomic particles by beams coming from two different flagships. Penny went straight to Kashaunta, appearing on the ship's bridge still in stealth. To their credit, her guards noticed immediately and bared their weapons at her.
The guns that were powerful enough to blast holes in skyscrapers and sturdy enough to withstand a fall from orbit with hardly a scratch unloaded their payloads into her. Penny opened her mouth, and strings of psychic energy writhed outward, wrapping themselves around the guns and wrenching them out of the claws of Kashaunta's guards while the impacts' explosions were contained by thick shields.
Kashaunta herself had already drawn her sword but hadn't moved an inch.
"Penny," she said dryly. "Welcome to my ship. I apologize for your reception."
A new shield came down on both of them, preventing their words from reaching the ears of Kashaunta's subordinates.
"Think nothing of it, Elder Kashaunta. What punishments will be given to the Grand Fleet Commander?"
"Well, technically I am not the Grand Fleet Commander of this fleet," she said. "So that is not really something I can enforce. However, the Grand Fleet Commander of the 85th Grand Fleet does wish to talk with you, Justicar, and myself about what just occurred."
"And you believe him?" she exclaimed.
"He sent transcripts of the message he sent to one Elder Solei, asking him to cease his actions before it was too late."
"Even the Alliance can make deepfakes," Penny said.
"And do you think I would be ignorant of such things, child?" Kashaunta asked. "We have ways around those. That is why we still have a society after billions of years of time to screw it all up. Deepfakes are a problem of less advanced species and cultures, not those with the tools to handle them."
"Which are AIs, which you also ban throughout the galaxy."
"Yes."
"Isn't that hypocritical?"
"Yes, it is," Kashaunta said. "You can go and complain to the Judges who decided that if you wish, though asking them to think of the children instead of preserving the power of the entire Sprilnav species will get you laughed at by a billion mouths."
Penny felt something in her mind take offense to Kashaunta's wording. It didn't feel like it was part of her, but it also did. The shock of all the lives lost hit her again, making her scowl.
"So there will be nothing done?" Penny growled.
"No. Prepare for a neutral and level-headed discussion. If you wish to have any seat at a table such as this, you will conduct yourself with decorum. You will not accuse Elder Valisada of being responsible for whichever fool did this, and you most certainly will not baselessly claim that Yasihaut is at fault for this, even if it is likely that she or her backers are. It is time you learn the lesson that all Elders have: there are always more Sprilnav. Recognize that this was a strike against you without casting aside all of your goodwill among those that matter."
"Those that matter," Penny mused. "Sometimes I forget what you are."
Kashaunta stepped forward, eyes narrowing. She let out a hiss.
"You saw a few thousand people die, and now you're back to the racism again? Grow up. People die all the time in this galaxy. You complain about the status quo. I would respect that, if you could stomach what is required to change it. Death will continue to run rampant, and you will be the reason more die no matter what you do. 760 sextillion Sprilnav, Penny. And you cry over ten thousand?
During the Source war, we sent two years olds to war. You don't get to slide back into comfortable dumb hatred of our species because of a few stupid people. Rest assured, if you ever get this Alliance-based order, you or your successors will become tyrants. There will be a human who has the power and will to start wars, and enact genocides, for functionally no reason. Need I remind you of World War Two, and World War Three? If you multiply the population of Humanity by a trillion, that means you'll get a trillion Pol Pots, or Hitlers, or Genghis Khans.
And a hell of a lot more dumb idiots in power, which ascribes most of the history of nearly every species in the galaxy. Notice how Valisada and I both fired on Solei once he decided to be an adult daycare nominee? Notice how Valisada has not fired at us, or Justicar, and is trying his best to start a constructive dialogue? People die in war, Penny. This is reality. And you cast your disdain onto me, the only Sprilnav keeping you alive in this place, because I happened to be born an Elder. But no. I'm still some alien, right? Just another dirty animal for you to kill when the Judgment ends."
Kashaunta's fury caught Penny off-guard. The Elder truly meant her words. Penny had deeply offended her, cracking open the facade she usually maintained. The smug feeling at having made Kashaunta go on such a tirade faded when she considered the circumstances. Maybe she had acted like a child. But she hadn't said anything truly deserving of such a furious tirade, had she?
Not unless her proclamation that she remembered 'what Kashaunta was' had an implication that she didn't understand. Kashaunta was a mass murderer, one who was more than willing to justify it when necessary. And she downplayed the fact that this attack was on Penny herself and on thousands of innocents on a Sprilnav planet where she was meant to be safe. This wasn't a pair of assassins in the night, slipping poison into water or dropping snakes into a bed. This was a much more insidious and terrifying evil. Penny had been powerless to stop it.
Penny knew she was right, but Kashaunta did not. Could she truly weigh her scant decades against Kashaunta's billions of years of age? Perhaps. Age was not wisdom, though it certainly could be experience. Kashaunta turned around and started to walk away. Sadly, Penny still needed her.
"I'm sorry, Kashaunta. I am... incredibly charged. I am very pissed right now. I am not apologizing for how I feel about this attack. I have every right to be upset, and I will remain so. I will not be bullied or cowed into submission, even by a thousand more tirades. There comes a point where something must be done. But if you are upset over what I said, then I would at least like an honest clarification why."
"Because you had showed me you could think like a person should. That you didn't see people's species anymore. That you were becoming less racist. And yet, when you are cut raw, you still see me as a Sprilnav Elder alone, and therefore complicit in this massacre I literally did everything I could to do stop before it worsened. You said you knew 'what I am' as if you'd forgotten that. And it is clear that you meant that you'd forgotten your belief that I am some dirty criminal Sprilnav, who deserves to be slaughtered in the dark for the crime of being born in her species.
You care more for the ash on Justicar than you do for what I have given you. Your simplistic view of reality would mean that if you could push a button to kill us Elders, you'd do it, robbing countless families of their loved ones, because you now remember 'what we are,' and are again regressing away from your previous growth."
"I am one person, Kashaunta. I don't understand why you care this much about me. But I can recognize that the message you received is one of terrible bigotry. I am suffering, every day, every week, that I remain in this god-forsaken place. It hurts for you to dismiss the people I care about, even for a moment, dying just because there are many of them. But that does not excuse what I said to you despite the death toll you carry on your own head. It was a half-truth."
Kashaunta laughed. "Do you know why I care so much about what you think, Penny? It is because you are the other aliens. All at once. The Alliance is the face of all things 'alien' in many places. Remember what conceptual energy is? Lecalicus told you, I believe. You represent more than just your own views. And if you're able to forgive a speeding space entity, but not me, then it shows that we will never have peace. That no matter what, this cycle of hatred will continue, and I will need to either build a new galaxy with aliens that don't hate us for our ancient crimes, or just figure out another way. You are the face of the rest of the galaxy, Penny. And you have just told me that you still hate me for being an Elder. After I thought you had changed."
"And you believe you are undeserving of such hatred?"
"Penny," Kashaunta said. "The Alliance didn't exist when many of these events happened. Some of your grievances are older than the mountains on Earth. You say you hate us for genocides that happened so long ago that they no longer hold any meaning. There is no compensation we can give to dead species on dead worlds. What you want is an alien species to hate and blame for all the universe's problems. Because it is easier to hate us than to confront reality. And we are the ones you have been told to hate."
"They were not small things. It was the deaths of trillions of people, Kashaunta."
"Yes. And it was wrong. I can understand that. But what do you think will happen when your Alliance, filled with people who hate us, takes over? You will see humans bombing Sprilnav schools, and the hivemind will do nothing, for it will share that hate. Acuarfar will abduct and torture us. Knowers will devour our children. And in the face of that? You would turn a blind eye, because it is too hard to solve with a simple fix. You will only propagate generational hatred, just as all the Alliances and Galactic Republics and Peace Unions did before you.
Because underneath your message of equality for all species is oppression and genocide for us, the villains in your little story. That is what happens in reality, once the benevolent dictators die. And you, who have lived with us, eaten with us, and talked with us, will sit upon your golden throne, and when I am brought before you, naked, bleeding, and in need of support, you will throw me away, because all I am to you is an Elder. That mindset is exactly what stands in the way of peace. It is why I stopped giving you aliens chances for so long. And having to argue this with you at all makes me think you may no longer be worth my effort."
More manipulation. Penny was ready to shout at her, but Nilnacrawla pulled her thoughts away from blind anger. And it did feel unnatural for her. Alien.
"This is not peace," Penny said. "This is war. And we are circumstantial allies. I will not become what you claim."
"I have sown the seeds of a thousand despots," Kashaunta said. "I recognize them when I see them because I have reaped the heads of a million more."
Penny sighed. She wanted to resist and continue arguing, but it wouldn't get her anywhere. Now that she had thought about it, she was unlikely to overturn a viewpoint set in a billion years of experiences. Perhaps Penny could explore this later, when she had time to properly process it all.
"Very well. I will go to this meeting of yours, and I will conduct myself with decorum. However, while I refuse to belittle or forget thousands of deaths, I am sorry that you feel this way."
"But you are not sorry about making me feel so."
"No," Penny replied. She suppressed her emotions more, taking the time to carefully consider her words. Kashaunta was wrong and oddly sensitive right now. Saying the wrong thing could damage far more than their mutual feelings. As much as she wanted to win this argument, Kashaunta was who she was. She was the alien dictator keeping the Alliance alive.
"We are both right in some ways, and perhaps we might be both wrong, too. This only shows how tough the road will be. We at least are consciously trying to come to an understanding. But for the billions of Alliance citizens, quintillions of aliens, and sextillions of Sprilnav? It is a gargantuan task. And... right now, I don't think it is possible."
"It isn't," Kashaunta said. "And it won't be for thousands of years. But we don't get some neat little time skip to wait and solve all of our problems for us. Change will start only when we make it."
Kashaunta was throwing her a bone, then. They both knew the argument couldn't continue right now.
"So we have an understanding, then," Penny said. "Hatred will remain, but it must be minimised. That way, cultural and social pressure will eventually stamp it out, and we may have peace."
"No. We will have a truce, which will only become peace with much more work. The Alliance is a nation that is 24 years old. Only a single generation has grown up within it. Negotiations will be hard with so many who remember the hatred. But Valisada is not like other Sprilnav. He will seek to bring a hybrid war to you and the Alliance, unless you can convince him that you truly mean to bridge the divide. You are clearly misguided, but have a genuinely good heart. That will make life hard for you. Your words today would have spelled the death of you and the Alliance, had I not established this shield around us to hide them. Out of the spirit of our friendship, I will not request a favor in return for this boon."
"Thank you, Kashaunta. Though I'm not sure I can consider you a friend."
"The fact that you bothered to listen to my side of things, in this limited aspect, despite the hurt you must feel right now, proves otherwise. I am well aware of my past crimes, Penny. I know that my emotions today were a weakness I should have been able to seal, and that you will still see me for who I was, and not who I am. I know how it sounds for me, a killer and a ruler, to be upset at being confronted. But that is how I am. I still have my pride as an Elder, and there is only so far it can be pushed. Who I was certainly would qualify as beyond evil. But to remain at the top, there are limits to how far you can swing into benevolence.
I cannot atone. Do not try to make me repay debts that you don't own. If you are ever to have more Elders on your side, whether Progenitors or otherwise, you will need to learn to deal with this. There will be people with death tolls higher than the population of the Alliance, who were once the heart of evil and are now at least acceptable. The first step will be recognizing that, yes, we are in fact friends, despite my history. Because only from friendship and understanding can hope come."
"I will think about this more. My feelings about this, and about you, have not yet solidified."
"I was wrong for what I said to you, Penny. We are both on edge, and said things that we didn't properly express. We should get our heads in order before re-entering this argument with logic instead of emotions."
"I agree. I will go and see who I can save. And I will think more about this. I freed people from slavery, and watched them die today. Respectfully, I must spend some time away from you for now."
Penny left the ship. In something near her subconscious, anger remained. When she landed in the rubble once again, she missed a small but steady stream of conceptual energy wafting into her from below.

Mouse Ears Puts FTW ($DIS)
Happy Sunday!
Not terribly long ago I was ridiculed for suggesting $SNAP calls could make you money even though my approach was to exit prior to ER. I can’t be right twice, so here goes nothing….
Securing $DIS puts first thing Monday to me is an absolute low risk effort to not only scalp some nice gains but also achieve those baggers y’all like instead of being bagholders.
I already missed out on scoring these on the cheap early April as I was too busy being a regard elsewhere. Luckily the IV on contracts expiring 5/10 (after ER mind you) are still quite low and I expect IV to throttle up to 150% or more by this time next week.
While the mouse ears is great at screwing bears over, my sound bullet proof reasoning is below:
The play:
$105p 5/10 exp. Available for a cool $1 or so with great opportunity to not only be ITM prior to earnings but also along with the kick in IV to see a nice 60-200% increase in value without even playing the ER call.
My position: will comment Monday AM when I secure position.
My exit: if I double by EOW I will sell at least half and let the rest ride.
Prediction: $DIS to $93 by 5/10, probably 5/9. If my prediction is correct, it will make those $105 puts be worth well more than 10x what they are now.
Best of luck!

2024.04.26 18:26 Lord_Long_Rod Yuletide Sasquatch Demon

Good old Uncle Roy came to town to see The General over the Thanksgiving holiday. We had a feast, caught up on the goings on in the family, and did some Black Friday shopping at the adult porn shop. On Sunday I drove Roy home to Sasquatch hollow. His good old mule, Red Psaki, gave out on I-85 on the trip down to my place, so old Roy had to put her down. So come Sunday, old Roy and I strapped down in my old pickup truck and headed north to the Carolinas.
We were already balls deep in a jar of Roy’s shine before we left. We talked and talked on the ride. We were both in good spirits. At one point Roy pulled out his harmonica and started playing it. I asked him if he wanted me to tune in the bluegrass channel on Sirius-XM so he could play along with it. He said “Fuck no!! I wanna jam to sumthang heavier. You got anything heavier, boy?”
I rambled around in my glove box and found a CD from Slayer called “Seasons in the Abyss”. Roy approved, so I inserted it into my stereo and cranked up the audio. The song “War Ensemble” kicked in and Roy jumped all over it. I never conceived of listing to this tune with harmonica, but damn if Roy not only kept up, he was spot-on! Pure metal harmonica!!
By the time we made it to Atlanta we got into the second jar of Roy’s moonshine. Now let me tell you that good shine starts off a little rough. But after a few drinks your tongue becomes numb. After a few more drinks the shine starts tasting good, real good! We were downing that 160 proof liquor like it was root beer.
It was about this time that Roy started talking about Christmas. I asked if he had plans for the holiday. He said he has some work to do, but he usually gets invited to the local whore house for a turkey dinner followed by some rough anal sex.
Roy then begins telling me a story about a really mean and nasty Bigfoot that appears on Christmas Eve every year. I laughed and asked Roy if this Christmas Bigfoot wears a Santa hat. But Roy started getting serious. He started telling me about this beast.
“Well Sir, this sumbitch only shows up on Christmas Eve night. Don’t ask me why, that jest the way it happens. It been haunting Sasquatch Hollar fer, ah reckin, bout long as I remember. But there’s a trick to making it show up.”
Roy paused and took a long swig of shine. Then he looked at me, eyes squinted and serious like, and asked “General, since we is in the big city, why don’t we look to score us an 8-ball and git us a whore?” I said “Fuck no!!” Roy then asked if we could just get the 8-ball. I said no, and then I asked him to continue his story, which he did.
“Well, ain’t much known about this here creature. Lots of folks thinks it is one of them thar woo-woo apes, you know, the supernatural kind. I only seen it a few times myself. Scary motherfucker. Scary as Hell, I tell ya.”
Roy continued, “Ya see, it don’t jest show itself to everone. Ya gots ta summon it. In fact, if it twere up to me, I would never see that critter agin fer the rest of my life here on God’s green earth. But ever year sum dum sumbitch gots ta go and summon it.”
“That bastard is about 17’ tall, wide as a ‘55 Chevy, and prolly weighs over a ton. It will appear outa thin air and then jest vanish. And If’n it appears to ya, well sir, you is FUCKED!!”
I took all this in, as I tried to keep my truck between the lines under the influence of Roy’s devil shine. I asked Roy, “So, you are saying this is some kind of supernatural shit? C’mon, Roy, I don’t believe in that horse shit!” Roy held up his hand to signify he was swearing to the truth of what he said.
As we headed north through Atlanta, Roy saw a sign for Ponce DeLeon Drive. He asked “Hey, ain’t that whar all them f#ggots are?!?” I said it is. Then Roy asked if we could stop and beat the shit out of some of them.
I told Roy that we were definitely NOT going to stop and commit a hate crime. Then I asked him to continue with his Bigfoot story. Roy said “Fuck you, General! I ain’t a’telling you shit unless you take me to whoop some f**s.” I said “ROY! That’s a crime! We will end up in jail!” Roy looked pissed.
After a couple moments I said, “Ok, Roy, I will take you to Ponce DeLeon and you can beat up ONE f**, then you have to finish your Bigfoot story.” Roy said “HOT DAMN!!”
Once there, we came across this silly looking freak walking down the sidewalk. He was clearly a homo. Old Roy dived out of my truck before I could even get it stopped. We were both ripped from hours of drinking Roy’s moonshine, which probably explains why I did not notice that old Roy had a claw hammer in his hand.
Roy took off running after the poor guy like a bat out of hell. For an elderly man he could sprint like an Olympic track and field competitor. He was running toward the guy, hammer raised in the air and screaming some sort of mountain man gibberish.
After Roy was finished he jumped back in my truck and we took off. Again, we had been drinking Roy’s mountain hooch for hours, so my reflexes were slower than usual, which is why I sped off down the wrong side of the road. Roy said “Git yer ass on the other side of the road, asshole!” I performed a corrective maneuver and off we went.
“Now tell me what happened, you old fuck”, I said. Roy replied, “Well I swung that old hammer at the f***ot. I did not realize I wuz holdin the hammer backwards, so I hit him with the claw side square in the head. I guess I wuz caught up in all the excitement, so Goddamn, what a fucking mess!!” I said, “Not THAT, the Bigfoot story. Tell me about the Christmas Bigfoot you started telling me about.”
Roy continued, “Oh yeah, that. So here’s the deal. You know that Christmas show bout the toys that come to life, and then all them f*gs prance around fer what seems like a goddamn eternity? There’s all that music and singing and shit.”
I responded “You mean ‘Frosty the Snowman?” For some reason that set Roy off. He threw the empty jar of shine at me and screamed “NO, YOU SUMBITCH!!! That fucking PLAY whar they dance....uh ... that ballette bullshit!!!”
Fortunately, I had my window down to catch some fresh air because Roy’s liquor was getting on top of me pretty bad. When Roy threw the shine jar at me it flew right by me and out the window. Unfortunately for the BMW driving next to us, it smashed into their passenger side window and shattered it to pieces. I said, “GODDAMN IT, ROY!!! They are going to get my tag number and call the police!! YOU DUMB BASTARD!!!”
Roy told me to shut up, that he would take care of it. Roy pulled out his .44 magnum, leaned over me, and started firing at the BMW through my open window. “WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING?!?!”, I demanded. Roy said “Will you fucking relax? They is too busy dodging those bullets to get yer tag number.”
Well, I got off the highway immediately. We took the side roads from that point forward in an attempt to evade detection. I told Roy “You crazy old fuck! If we go to jail I am going to cripple you!”
Roy made a dismissive motion with his hand and said “That’s jest the smack talking, son. Don’t worry. It will pass after a bit.” I looked over a Roy, who seemed not to have a care in the world. I asked “smack?” He nodded and said “Yeah, you know... H. Heroin. Why the hell do ya think I calls it ‘Devil Shine’? I cook up some H and spike my shine with it. Well, I did with this particular batch.”
Roy reached down into his bag and pulled out another jar of his shine, opened it, and took a long slug that would probably kill a small elephant. “Motherfucker!”, I said. I knew there was no reason to take it any further, not with Roy. The first convenience store we came to, I stopped and bought a large black coffee.
We rode in silence for a while after that. Roy knew he had pissed me off with that spiked shine. Finally, Roy said “You want me to finish my story?” I rolled my eyes. I asked “Bigfoot?” Roy said, “hell yeah, Bigfoot!” I sighed and nodded my approval, upon which Roy continued with his Bigfoot story.
“Now, I was asking you about that thar Christmas show when you went and got yer ass on yer shoulders. But, now it has come to me. I am talking about ‘The Nutcracker’. You ever see that shit?” I told him that, of course I have seen it. I have seen countless performances. Apparently, the only performance Roy has ever seen is the porn parody ‘The Nutsucker’. However, some of the music must be similar because Roy perfectly hummed ‘The Nutcracker Suite’.
Roy said “That thar song, you call ‘The Nutcracker Suite’, that’s how you summon the Christmas Sasquatch.” I looked at Roy incredulously and asked “You summon the monster by playing ‘The Nutcracker Suite’?”
“Yeah”, said Roy, “but backwards!” I asked “What?!?” Roy replied “Yeah, that’s it. You gotta take a recording of that Nutcracker song and play it backward, the WHOLE thang. THAT is how you summon the monster.”
I said “Let me guess: you call the beast ‘The Nutcracker’, right?” Roy shook his head and said “Oh no, no sir. It is called ‘The Buttcracker’. It’s a rapist bigfoot, and it fancies ass-rape!!”
Now, if I had not myself just recently fought and killed a homosexual rapist Bigfoot at my house, I would have stopped my truck then and there, beat the unholy dog-shit out of Roy, and left him for dead on the side of the road. However, I know these things to be real. I asked Roy “Are you shitting me?” Roy gave me a look assuring me that he was dead serious. Then he said “I don’t fuck around when it comes to these here critters. They is deathly serious, and they will rip you to shreds.” An uneasy feeling started coming over me.
To confirm, I said “Let me get this straight. If you play The Nutcracker Suite Backwards on Christmas Eve, then a huge Sasquatch will appear and attempt to anally rape you?” Roy said, “It only happens on Christmas Eve. You cain’t summon it on any other day. And it won’t ‘attempt’ to butt-fuck ya; it WILL butt-fuck ya!”
I asked Roy why in the world anyone would summon a huge rapist Bigfoot, on Christmas Eve of all days. This seems more like a thing you would seek to avoid. Roy said it was just “one of those things”, and that you usually summon it to smite your enemies.
For example, Roy once got a neighbor move in on him in Sasquatch Hollow. He thought he was a little too “diverse” for the neighborhood, so he snuck up to the stranger’s house on Christmas Eve night and left a battery powered cassette deck playing The Nutcracker Suite in reverse. Roy said that as it was playing there came a swirling cloud that glowed lime green and pulsated. It got thicker and thicker, then turned red right before the recording stopped. There was then a bolt of lightning that smashed into the ground, destroying the cassette player and accompanied by an explosion of thunder so loud you would have heard it for miles around!
Then, BOOM, the Buttcracker appeared right in the spot where the bolt of lightning struck!! It was at least 17’ tall, covered in black, matted hair, and smelled like shit. It’s eyes burned a fiery red. And, according to Roy, it had a 5’ long cock that glowed red and visibly throbbed. This is one of the most feared Bigfoots in history, Roy advised. It is said to come only on the eve of the anniversary of the birth of our Lord and Savior because it was spawned by Satan as an Anti-Christ.
Anyway, when Roy unleashed this booger on his neighbor, the creature literally ripped off the side of his house, grabbed the guy, picked him up like a rag doll, and forced him onto the red pulsating squatch-rocket. Roy said it was gruesome. It just kept pushing its wang deeper and deeper until the man’s head eventually popped off and the Bigfoot’s huge boner popped out of the man’s neck-hole!
I said “Jesus Fucking Christ!!! Why would anybody summon that monster?!?! Who would do such a thing?!?” Roy said it was usually some asshole trying to fuck around with an old legend. I asked Roy, “When you say it is usually some asshole who summons this demon, you really mean that it’s YOU, right Roy? It’s always YOU, isn’t it??” Roy grinned and I said “You got me!! Heh heh heh!!”
To confirm, I said “Let me make sure I got this straight. You, my Uncle Roy, conjure up the Anti-Christ on the Eve of Christ’s birth every year, to walk the earth anally raping people to death? Do I have this right, Roy?” Roy responded “Yep”. Roy seemed quite happy with himself.
“Why?”, I asked. Roy said, “Well, sir, I jest hate human beings. That’s why I live so fer out in the sticks.”
“But Roy”, I countered, “You say you do this every year. Surely there are not people moving in close to you EVERY year. Hell, you live 10 miles off the nearest paved road, over mountainous terrain that goes straight up and straight down. If you are setting off this Satan Bomb every year, then you must be going into town to do it.”
Roy responded “Well look at you, General. You is a regular Sherlock Fucking Holmes. Alright, you got me. I’m a Satanic murderer…by proxy! I discovered the legend of the Buttcracker years ago when I wuz grave robbing. I came across this old book of magic and shit some old fuckwit had buried with him.”
“Well, one night I wuz higher than fuck. See, I had recently got my hands on some fresh adrenal glands and, well, I is digressing. Suffice it to say that I wuz readin them spells out loud and I accidentally summoned the Buttcracker. POOF!! It jest appeared in my livingroom. The lightning strike burned my cabin plum to the ground!”
“That mangy motherfucker started at me with that throbbing dong, and I knew it meant ta fuck me. But I wuz sooooooo fukin pissed about my cabin that I picked up a split log dryin on my fireplace, and beat the unholy shit outa that critter with it. I humbled it. Hell, I nearly kilt it. Then shit got weird.”
“I experienced mindspeak fer the first time that evening. The critter spoke to me using only it’s mind. It sed to me, “A looky here, Roy (it sounded like Foghorn Leghorn), you let my boy there live and I will give ya dominion over it. It will be your servant. The only thing you must do in return is let it live and get it laid once a year on Christmas Eve. Can ya handle that, buddy?”
“Well, sir, I knew that thar voice. It wuz Satan hisself! I sed, ok, Satan, I’ll let this hairy punk live, but simply having dominion over this smelly fur ball ain’t enuff. It’s no good to me. You is gonna hafta do one more thang fer me if ya wants this bitch ta live.”
Satan replied “What do you want?” Roy said “I want a Taco Bell in town.” Satan paused, then asked “What?”. Roy said “What is you, deaf? Git the pig shit outa yer fuckin ears, asshole! I sed I want a Taco Bell!!” This time there was a long pause by Satan.
Finally, Satan asked why he wanted a Taco Bell to be built in town. Roy was losing his patience. He called Satan a “cunt”, then said Taco Bell is his favorite place to go when he gets “the munchies”. Roy said “You know, fuck-face, when I’m really ripped I likes ta make a run fer the border!”
Eventually, Satan agreed. The very next day construction started on the new Taco Bell in town. As a result, Old Roy became the caretaker for the Anti-Christ beast known as The Buttcracker.
Roy continued, “Ya see, General, I generally is a loner. People irritate me. So what I does is I keep me a naughty list all year. Then, at the end of the year, I pick out 2-3 people that royally pissed me off during the year, like some damn whore who cain’t make change or the tax collector. Then, on Christmas Eve I go to thar house and summon The Buttcracker.”
“I make sure to back my ass up so I don’t get burned again by the lightning bolt. When that old skanky, giant beast appears I sick the critter on ‘em! Then I kick back, light me up a ceegar and enjoy the show! Heh heh heh ...”
I said “GODDAMN, ROY!! You go around summoning that demon to get revenge on people who annoy you?!?” Roy responded, “Well, I rob ‘em too, after that critter gits dun butt-fucking them into their next lives.”
“That is some cold, evil shit, Roy”, I said. Roy made a dismissive motion with his hand.
We sat in silence for a while. By this point in our journey we had just entered North Carolina. There is a powerful snow storm bearing down on the Appalachians, so I was eager to get Roy home so I could haul ass back to Georgia. But, I had to ask one more thing.
I asked Roy if he is going to summon The Buttcracker in a couple weeks on Christmas Eve. Roy looked at me as asked “You got a problem with that?” I did, but I was not going to let Roy know. “Hell no, Roy. You do your thing.” Then I asked who he was going to Ass-Squatch this year with his infernal beast. Roy said that this year he was going after the madam at the local whore house who shot one of his balls off with an AR-15. Then he said if he has time he is going to get rid of some local be@ners too.
I dropped off Roy at the trail head that leads him back into the woods to his cabin. His buddy, old Wild John, The Felon Of Helen, was there with a mule and a wagon to haul Roy and his stuff to his cabin. Ready to depart, Roy walked over to me and asked if I wanted to come back for “The Summoning”. I told him that I have had my fill of rapey Bigfoots for a while.
We said goodbye. Then I remembered I had a gift for uncle Roy. “Shit, boy, you didn’t have to go and do that”, Roy said. I agreed but said I thought he would enjoy it. I pulled it out of my pocket and handed it to Roy. It was the soiled g-string from a stripper Roy took a liking to at a local titty bar I took Roy to while he was visiting. Roy must have loved it, because it put a big grin on his face!

2024.04.25 08:02 _myst Sci-Fi-esque Picture Book on the future of space travel

I FOUND IT
It's called "Future Space: Beyond Earth" and is available on Amazon, because of course it is.
Hey Reddit, I'm looking for a sci-fi picture book that I was fond of from my childhood, early to mid 2000's, roughly a 2002-2007 publication period.
It's a book without a single overarching plot but is a series of vignettes that discuss the potential future of humanity in space, featuring a number of designs for future space habitats, planetary colonies, and interstellar ships, with large CGI illustrations, upper-elementary school/middle school reading level. I believe it was published by Scholastic as I picked it up at a Scholastic Book Fair at a public school in southern California. This is an exact image used in one page of the book, the rest shares this CGI/not-quite-illustrated by hand art style. Many pages feature artwork that was seemingly rendered in a computenot drawn entirely by hand, my 3rd-grade self thought they were actual photos at the time and didn't realize this book was discussing hypothetical space-based installations rather than existing projects. I'm not sure if the above image was sourced from the book originally or if the book got it from somewhere else.
-Soft covepaperback book, very thin 20-30 pages, but pages are larger than the standard 8.5"x11" dimensions, maybe 11"x15" or so?
-Cover Art: Dark grey/black with a tiny tesselating hexagon pattern around the edge if memory serves. The main artwork prominently features a series of Enzmann starships/Interstellar arks of the type seen in this image, with large spherical nose sections made of deuterium "snow" mined from Jupiter. There is also a large red stripe crossing the page that depicts a laser from a separate piece of art. Cover features 3-5 of these with a bright corona-like sun pattern on the lefthand side. This same art is featured in the final chapter of the book discussing interstellar travel and is called "Escape from the Sun" or something similar, and discusses interstellar arks/generation ships for future humanity to use to escape the system once the Sun turns into a red Giant and starts eating the inner planets. Here's my shitty Microsoft Paint rendition of the cover, from memory.
Topics included on various other pages in the book include:
-A page or two on Mars colonization, featuring this exact image as well as separate ones of large green dome-structures and a large white glider on the right-hand page with extremely long, thin wings
  • A page with a series of space hotels/tourism similar to this one made of the spent orange fuel tanks from the Space Shuttle linked together in large rings
-A page on steam-powered rockets, shooting payloads to other planets on bullet-shaped ships (VERY similarly shaped to this image) from low orbit using high-powered lasers (imaged in red in the original text)
-A page on laser and orbital-railgun-based missile defense that also mentions Ronald Reagan's Strategic Defense Initiative/"Star Wars" program. The illustration features satellites in low orbit armed with electromagnetic railguns/bright purple lasers destroying missiles in flight, the satellites' main weapons are shaped like a capital letter "U" where the barrel of the laseweapon is folded in half (rule-of-cool I guess idk)
-A page on large rotating space habitats at Earth/Moon Lagrange Points
-A page on space medicine and manufacturing that briefly mentions "foamed metal"
-A page featuring space elevators, large illustration shows a building serving as the base for one in a grassy area with rolling hills
-The very last page of the book features a timeline of when these expected technologies will allegedly become reality lasting from the 2020's to the mid2200's or so, with thumbnail-size images of the previous concept art.
Thanks in advance for the help, I'm almost sure the book is out of print by now but I'd love to find a copy if possible. I haven't been able to find any other artwork featured in the book beyond the Mars rover picture I linked above. Good hunting!
EDIT: After further searching the image for the mars rover I linked seems to be by Pat Rawlings, a fairly prolific technical illustrator who has done a lot work for NASA over the years. At least some of the other work in the book seems to be from him as well, this image is also found the same book in a section on Mars, and is by him. If memory serves this particular space elevator picture is either from the book itself, or done in an extremely similar art style and is again made by Pat Rawlings. The entire book is illustrated in this art style though I'm not sure if he was the sole artist involved, if that helps the search.

2024.04.25 07:22 CardBoardBox_Man What do your OCs think of my OC Melanie?

This is Melanie Riga.
She has a lot of problems. Personal problems, criminal problems, professional problems, odor problems, political problems, everything.
The (jist of the) story
In late 2027, Melanie just got off 10 months in jail for getting caught with bills from a bank robbery (that she took part in but they couldn't prove). After bouncing around her sister's house and getting shot in a terrorist attack, she becomes a bounty hunter (after recuperating). A set of new federal laws in 2026 essentially deputize bounty hunters to serve certain warrants instead of just catching bail skips. All the while, she needs to find a way to effectively launder the ~$1M of stolen money that she's still sitting on.
The character
I call her an idiot, but she actually has a master's in atomic & particle physics, which does jack-shit for her because she has absolutely no idea how to capture people. She can find them easily, but when bullets start flying, she effectively relies on her ex-cellmate and partner-in-shady-activity, Elizabeth, who's an ax-crazy veteran of a dissolved highly classified unit under CIA that committed many, many "unacknowledged actions" worldwide.
But back to Melanie. She's very close to her family, except her twin sister, who she's been feuding with since birth. For about three months after release, she even lived with her older sister (and older sister's family). Outside of her family and Elizabeth, she doesn't actually have too many friends... or any at all. Without said familial closeness, she's Travis Bickle with a hell of a lot more money. Her personality goes a long way towards explaining why. She's oddly witty in interactions, which comes off as seemingly intentional, excessive, and needless snark that drives away those around her. She has a profound disinterest in the lives of others, and almost exclusively enjoys solitary activities and conversation topics that bore other people. She also constantly stinks of the cigarettes she loves oh-so-much, has a constant unreadable neutral expression, and an imposing 5'10" build that doesn't do her many favors in the approachability department.
Melanie's dad is Italian (and his dad was a mobster), but more importantly, her mother is Argentine (immigrated in 1984 and currently a detective in DC) and despite acting like they don't get each other, the resemblance is uncanny at times.
The setting
In 2027, American politics has changed. In 2025, both major parties in America completely balkanized and shattered (Republicans entirely, Democrats still exist in a rump state) into a bunch of smaller, far, far more extreme parties, most of which have ended up falling along racial & ethnic lines. Melanie politically stands in the same area as a new cohort of Argentine immigrants that arrived in America after unrest back in Argentina. These new Argentines form one of the farthest-right blocs in American politics (being composed of conservatives who thought the leftists would seize power down there), and in tune with this new political window, Melanie is... not work-safe, to say the least. To start, she reeks of being a Cold War-style anticommunist - "I say kill 'em all!" is not an inaccurate representation of her view of her political enemies. On the domestic front, she's very racist against the groups that support the leftist parties, and bigoted as a whole towards a lot of different groups (which is quickly becoming the new societal standard) - she throws around slurs like she's in a Tarantino movie. After release, Melanie joins the APO, an upstart rightist party with a base in the DMV that allows it a sort of local dominance as well as major efforts in forming its own affiliated paramilitary wing.
The job:
Her political extremism makes her fall in well with the new cohort of bounty hunters. The new system has devolved into selective enforcement, allowing a silent kind of party-on-party (which, remember, fall very much on ethnic lines) proxy war. Melanie ends up being pretty vital in the fight against the left-wing PAP & EF parties, which have allied with local gangs to scare away any electoral competition - to fight them. Melanie decides to instead fight their gunrunning network, leading to the collapse of the PAP in January 2028 and unwittingly starting the most violent, nationwide gang war that the US has ever seen.
And now, 2028 will be the first presidential election in this brave new world.
The violence is about to escalate, and Melanie is at the forefront of it all.
