2024.05.13 22:25 TandrewTan Recertifying Income as Married Filing Separately After Filing Jointly 2023

Hi everyone,
I'm applying for PSLF as a nonprofit worker. I'm trying to recertify my income early before I might get a new job and was wondering how I can recertify with my current income when we filed jointly last year. My spouse makes a significant amount more than me so including her financial information spikes my payments into an amount that would require us to move. I've tried filling out the information in the studentaid.gov application but when I select to manually certify my income it always asks me to include my spouse's W2. Since we are filing Married but filing separately this year, will they always include her income in the recalculated SAVE payment?
Thanks in advance for any help!

2024.05.13 22:23 MuskmelonDirect1945 Why does support suck so much?

I've been attempting to accept a job offer with them now for about a month. It took 3 weeks for them to resolve a phone number issue, during which I had tickets with 3 different support agent. One ignored me, one argued with me and then closed my ticket without helping, and another was extremely helpful and sorted me out in minutes. Now I'm having trouble with ID verification, and am being ignored again, despite my ticket having been assigned to an agent. Is this common? Starting to think that I don't really want this work if they can't be bothered to treat applicants like people.

2024.05.13 22:21 jwrado I hate my MSP job and want to quit

Apologies for the length.
I'm in my 40s and have already had a successful culinary career. My last head chef job was an early covid casualty so I took a couple of years off to be a stay at home dad. Realized the next step to "advance" in my field would have been restaurant ownership and, that was the absolute last thing I wanted to do after 20+ years in the industry. Long story short, I was able to talk my way into a technician role at an MSP with no degree, certs, or experience.
I caught on very quickly and have learned a ton since I've been there. Started honing my interests and tightening my focus, and realized that the direction I really want to go is software engineering or maybe the application side of cybersecurity. The bosses and clients like me, and I get regular praise for my work and having learned so much so quickly.
The thing is, after a little over a year, I'm starting to dread coming to work every day. Some of the problem solving aspects are enjoyable and stimulating but most of the actually work and dealing with end-users is miserable. I'm in a tier 1 role that bleeds into tier 2 but most of what I do is hardware repairs, troubleshooting network and server issues, and a lot of PW resets. I've gotten into a little bit of Azure and AD, as well as firewall management which is a little bit better. At the end of the day, though, I hate answering the phone in the middle of working on other issues, being on-site and getting pulled in a million different directions, etc. I hate having to work in a million different ecosystems and rarely having the opportunity to take a deep dive into any one of them. And, if I'm being completely honest, I find networking mostly dull and uninteresting. Really, the whole job (and the company in general) feels spread so wide and thin. I'm not going to badmouth the company but, there seems to be a lot of general organizational management issues as well.
The summation of all of this is that I know for sure that this is not the side of tech in which I want to make my second career. I'm currently have about a 1.5 years left on my SWE degree and have been really tempted to get back into a kitchen while I finish studying. I know I could make a phone call today and go to work cooking tomorrow. It would be so easy to go get some mindless prep job where I can pop my in headphones and listen to Udemy courses, etc. - making as much or more as I am now. I feel like I'm sort of spinning my wheels at work while I go to school. Part of it would be a financial decision but, I also feel like I'm spending a lot of energy learning things that don't jive with my career path. Don't get me wrong, I love to learn about everything I can but when I have limited time (kids, school, house, etc), I'd much rather be honing coding skills or something similar.
My concern is what potential employers will think of my resume when they see that I bounced back into my old field after a year in IT. The work that I'm doing now is so far from my career goals, does it actually matter? I'm not trying to be a sysadmin or network engineer. How bad of a look is it to go back to cooking while I finish school?

2024.05.13 22:17 Rossowdult DOR success story

TL;DR: After 3 miscarriages and a diagnosis of DOR, I had two healthy pregnancies without IVF or other ART.
We started TTC when I was 35.5, my partner 37. We got pregnant quickly, and quickly had 3 miscarriages, all around 8 or 9 weeks. We never had them tested, but my OB suspected genetic abnormalities.
My partner's test results were normal for a man his age. After the 2nd miscarriage, I had bloodwork and an SHG, a procedure where my OB filled my uterus with saline and looked at it on an ultrasound to see whether I had any visible issues that could explain what was wrong. This procedure was timed to a specific day in my menstrual cycle, so that while we were at it, she could look at my ovaries on the ultrasound as well, to make a prediction about how many eggs she could expect to retrieve if we decided to try IVF.
The SHG turned out normal. My uterus was perfectly fine. My ovaries, however, looked like those of a woman nearing menopause. My antral follicle count (AFC) was only 4. If we did IVF now, the doctor said, that’s how many eggs she expected to harvest -- just 4. Not nearly enough for a promising cycle. The results from the blood test also corresponded to the levels of a menopausal woman. Here are the numbers, for those of you who already know what these mean:
Day 3 AMH: 0.311
Estradiol: 23.8
FSH: 13.8
I might have looked 30 on the outside, but I’d just turned 36, and on the inside I was closer to 50. Our doctor did not recommend that we move forward with IVF. We asked her what we could do instead. She suggested I try supplementing with DHEA, and gave us the recommended dosage (25 mg 3 times/day, for a total of 75 mg daily). She also recommended CoQ10, though she didn’t have a suggested dosage for that, and noted that my vitamin D levels were low. I started supplementing with each of those three things.
I noticed the effects of the DHEA very quickly. It’s an androgen, and can cause women to start sprouting extra body hair. My libido sprang up to teenager levels, and I got acne again.
I decided to take only 200 mg/day of the CoQ10 because it was expensive. That and the vitamin D seemed to give me more energy, maybe, but I couldn’t say for sure.
It took us longer to get pregnant the 3rd time. The miscarriage was the same.
Our OB explained again why she didn't recommend IVF for women with DOR, and told us about a patient of hers who’d had 9 miscarriages before having a successful pregnancy. We were lucky we were able to get pregnant so easily, she said. We were lucky that we didn’t have any other issues compounding the DOR.
If we wanted to explore other options, she told us, our best chance was to use an egg donor. Other than that, all we could do was keep trying. During my fertile window, and given our age, she recommended intercourse every 48 hours.
I doubled down on my research. I read everything I could find online, and read a lot of posts on message boards like the one I’m writing now. Here’s what I decided to do:
  1. Lots of exercise, or at least “lots” by my desk-worker standards (brisk walks every day, gentle training with 10-to-20-pound weights a few times a week, and frequent bike rides)
  2. Lots of time being happy and relaxed and out in the sun
  3. Supplements:
    1. DHEA, 75 mg/day divided in 3 doses
    2. CoQ10, 800 mg/day (ubiquinone, the cheaper kind)
    3. Vitamin D3, 2,000 IU/day
    4. Acetyl L-carnitine, or Alcar, 250 mg/day (the typical dose is 500 mg, but I found this amount gave me nightmares; at 250 mg I felt more energetic, like I could do twice as much exercising as I normally did)
    5. Alpha lipoic acid, 300 mg/day (this makes your urine stink, but it’s inexpensive and safe, and in addition to helping with fertility, I also found studies about its benefit to diabetics and its effect on the pancreas)
    6. Black cohosh on cycle days 1 through 12 (it’s an herb, so I have no idea how much I was actually getting)
    7. Vitex (ditto)
    8. Prenatal vitamins
    9. Fish oil (why not)
    10. More soy foods and freshly ground flax seeds in my diet, for extra estrogen
A note about CoQ10: There are two kinds on the market, a cheaper one (ubiquinone) and an expensive one (ubiquinol), which is supposed to be better absorbed. Both are similar in structure to vitamin E, but are not classified as vitamins because your body can make them on its own. I went with a low-ish dosage of the expensive one the first time around, but after the third miscarriage, I switched to a higher dose of the cheaper one, 800 mg. I definitely noticed an increase in energy while I was taking it.
Here is a study on CoQ10 in follicular fluid and its association with better outcomes: https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s00404-011-2169-2
Here’s another (“Conclusion: Our observation leads to the hypothesis that the oral supplementation of CoQ10 may improve follicular fluid oxidative metabolism and oocyte quality, specially in over 35-year-old women”): https://www.mdpi.com/2076-3921/7/10/141
The positive news about CoQ10 keeps coming. I’ll stop with these: https://rbej.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s12958-018-0343-0, https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/acel.12368
From what I learned while researching this stuff, both CoQ10 and acetyl l-carnitine are antioxidants that are thought to be active in the mitochondria. The mitochondria is sometimes called the “battery” of the cell, supplying its energy as it does its job. After an egg leaves the nourishing environment of the ovary for its journey down the fallopian tube, its only source of energy is its own mitochondria. That’s what keeps it fresh and alive. So an antioxidant that might help the mitochondria have more energy might be crucial for keeping egg cells, and the DNA inside them, better organized for longer -- long enough to conceive. This theory would apply to sperm cells as well, and is thought to be why taking these supplements gives people more energy. Young people have a lot of CoQ10 in their bodies, but after age 25 or so, our natural production goes down.
Here’s a study about egg quality and acetyl l-carnitine (ALCAR): https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0378432012002436
There isn’t as much research, especially in humans, on ACLAR as there is on CoQ10, but what’s been done so far looks promising. Here’s a study in mice: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0378432012002436
As for alpha lipoic acid (ALA), my understanding is that this is thought to be beneficial for diabetics because of its effects on the pancreas. The pancreas and the ovaries are similar in the way they age (again, according to things I read while I was researching like crazy). While I’m not overweight, I’ve always had high blood sugar, and have type 2 diabetes on both sides of my family. So I added this to my regimen too.
Research: ALA supplementation is thought to be safe during pregnancy: https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/09513590.2018.1462320
A small study has shown ALA to be helpful in patients with PCOS undergoing IVF: https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Luisa_Caponecchia/publication/303088959_Effect_of_myo-inositol_and_alpha-lipoic_acid_on_oocyte_quality_in_polycystic_ovary_syndrome_non-obese_women_undergoing_in_vitro_fertilization_a_pilot_study/links/584fb41c08ae4bc8993b3211/Effect-of-myo-inositol-and-alpha-lipoic-acid-on-oocyte-quality-in-polycystic-ovary-syndrome-non-obese-women-undergoing-in-vitro-fertilization-a-pilot-study.pdf
Anyway, if you're still reading, pregnancy number 4 was a success. I quit every supplement except for prenatal vitamins. My doctor at the IVF clinic put me on progesterone until I got through week 10, in case a progesterone deficiency was the cause of my previous miscarriages. She’d never tested for this, so the progesterone was just a precaution. I’d always been plenty nauseated with each of my pregnancies, and the supplemental progesterone only made it worse. All I could eat were dry crackers. After reading a few things about the potential effects of progesterone on an embryo, I don’t think I’d do it again, not unless my doctor had a test result suggesting that it was what I really needed.
My doctor also recommended I start taking baby aspirin, 81 mgs/day, to be continued throughout the pregnancy, in case I had an issue with blood clotting that was causing the miscarriages. She’d never tested me for it, and given my AFC and AMH and FSH levels, it seemed like we already knew what my problem was, but she said it couldn’t hurt, so I went on it and stayed on it until 36 weeks.
Two years later, while I was supplementing with just prenatal vitamins and CoQ10, and without really trying, we got pregnant again. Baby #1 is now five years old, and #2 is three.

Where do I begin? How do I begin again? I enrolled in an NCLEX preparedness course last year but my full time job got in the way of studying. I want to take the next steps, but where do I begin? A friend who works at West Coast University sent me a pdf of their Med Surg Review book that’s 600 pages. I’ve read through it once in the last 2 weeks. Do I use Saunders also and supplement with UWorld? Any guidance would be appreciated. Thank you

2024.05.13 22:01 Gigi-NotHadid AITA for not helping mentally ill sis?

My sis is suffering with mental health illness for the last 3y. She went off work mid-2022 to focus on getting better. Her husband isn’t the most supportive. I offered to help with long term disability (LTD) app in AUG/SEP2022, but she said she didn’t need help, had it under control and app was pretty much done. I asked her for updates from time to time and she said everything was fine. DEC 2022 I found out that she had been fired from her job while she was on sick leave and never submitted the LTD application. Things were worse with her mental health than she made it seem. Her Employer tried to reach out to her by email but my sis didn’t get back to them. So was let go on the grounds of job abandonment. They didn’t try calling her or the union before letting her go. I was annoyed that my sis was dishonest about her situation and that things had gotten to where they were. Her employer didn’t help her with the LTD app when she asked. They gave her the run around and expected her to instead apply for disability through the government. I stepped in to help after realizing she was fired and didn’t apply for LTD. I contacted her union and tried to get things back on track -file a grievance and submit LTD forms. Sis finally got everything submitted in the winter of 2023/2024. She said the reason for the delay was that the insurance company wanted more info about her medical history from all healthcare providers. We recently found out that her LTD claim was denied bcuz she missed the app deadline. My parents are constantly asking me to help with the appeal. I had a discussion with sis about finding a lawyer and not missing the appeal deadline. A week has gone by I asked her for an update and sis made no progress, but made it out like she called some lawyers. I don’t know if she’s being honest or lying again. It’s extremely frustrating to deal with. I am fed up and told her last night that I am done, I can’t help her anymore. I don’t have the energy to give anymore. It looked like she didn’t want to hear it and couldn’t wait for me to get out of her car. It’s extremely difficult to deal with a person who isn’t honest and isn’t motivated to help themselves. I know most of this mayb attributed to her mental health but I am exhausted and emotionally drained. To add, after getting more involved I found out that she missed a few of her appointments with her psychologist, who almost discharged her as a patient. She wasn’t responding to her union rep who would call, email and mail letters to her asking for updates- we now we have a group chat between the three of us to address that. Her husband expressed some frustration because she wasn’t fully honest with him either about her finances and she was about $10k in credit card debt because she has no income. Mom and husband helped pay that off. I want to be there for her but it’s getting to be too much for me, AITA for wanting to step away from all this?

2024.05.13 22:00 troyjira Mid-Level Finance Manager Trying to Find Work

I was recently laid off due to downsizing. My last role was working as a commercial finance manager for a large spirits distributor, the same distributor I have been working for for the past 5.5 years (first role out of college, graduated in my 30's). Honestly hated the job and I am thankful for the severance and career reset. I am trying to transition into tech within the Seattle area. This market feels daunting and I feel staying at my last job for so long actually hurt me. I'm also a veteran and spent 6 years of my 20's enlisted before returning to school in my 30's. I've gotten a few interviews out of probably 100 applications. But before I continue, I was hoping for some feedback. Thank you all.

2024.05.13 21:56 Extension_Park704 Contacting a former Study Contact for a Job Referral

I work at a large CRO & previously worked for a large sponsor for 2 years on a trial of theirs with my CRO. My last day working on this trial was in summer 2023.
I want to make the switch to sponsor side & recently applied for a job with this same sponsor. I know a lot of the times with these large companies it’s “Who you know” more than “What you know.” I am definitely qualified for the job I applied to, & think I have a good shot at getting it, but to ensure I beat the ATS & quick glances of a recruiter, I wanted to see if I could get someone from the inside to pull my application instead.
Here’s my question: Is it shady to email a person in leadership from the sponsor side on a study you worked on for 2 years, asking for a referral or to put a good word in? I was going to email them from my personal email address to make it more one on one. I was also going to try to connect with them on LinkedIn & message them too, but not sure how active they are on LinkedIn.
Thoughts? Suggestions?

2024.05.13 21:55 how-s-chrysaf-taken EE not sure how to proceed with her career

I opened reddit again just for this sub lol
Dear engineers who have been working for a few years, I need your wisdom.

I have a Master's (integrated) in EE (with a focus on energy stuff and I enjoy control systems, too, i'm basically a rookie at anything else, i.e. data bases, programming...) and I had the luck to work in R&D as my first job. I couldn't believe it.
But.
I'm not fully interested in it, and also my mental health is getting worse because I don't like the city I moved in for this job. I've made exactly zero new friends in the last few months. I'm a new graduate in case it's not clear, it's been less than a year. I'd love to quit and take some of the summer off to clear my head, and start looking for something new in september again, but I'm scared I won't find anything worth it. I'm from Europe and I want to work here, but I'm skeptical about if I will be considered, even with R&D experience since it's going to be less than a year's worth of it.
Has anyone here ever been in a similar situation? What did you do?
Also, I'd love to do a PhD and I've sent... very few applications but that's even harder to get, and my CV isn't the most impressive. But, if someone with average grades got to do a PhD, I'd love to hear their story.
Clarifications: There aren't any decent jobs for energy EEs in the city my university is (my parents think it's best to go back there) aside maybe from one lab in the university, but so far I've had no luck when trying to contact the personel. I'm not interested in a Master's because it would have to be abroad and while I would love that, my pocket would not.
Oh, and I'm not at the lab for work every day. For reasons I will not explain, I'm stuck with the sales and logistics department going off around me for most of the month. It's not a nice workplace.

2024.05.13 21:54 Scared-Application40 Sharing my job search experiance and asking advice on country selection in EU ?

Hello, I am a third country international graduate of applied economics from an Austrian university and have been searching for a job for several months now. Despite submitting over 100 applications, each tailored to the specific requirements of the position (in some cases, I even exaggerated my experience to align with the job description, by saying that I previously worked in an exactly similar position for several years), I have not received any callbacks.
My CV itself is quite strong, as I hold two master's degrees and have founded several companies. Additionally, I completed an internship at an Austrian non-profit organization. I have been open to accepting any job position within my field, and I have searched extensively across Austria, Luxembourg, and Portugal. However, I have noticed that many of my classmates from EU countries have been successful in securing employment.
In an attempt to improve my chances, I falsely claimed EU citizenship on a few CVs. As expected I got callbacks from around 4-5 recruiters who asked questions about my motivation and visa situations, they ghosted me everytime after those conversations. I also emailed and called several times to some companies and after many calls one answered and said to stop applying :). The I mmigration office said same that in my field I had no chance unless I was the only candidate.
I am seeking advice on how to proceed. Are there countries that are more welcoming to international candidates in the business or finance fields? Im lost can you guys share your experience or advice me what to do? Thanks in advance!

2024.05.13 21:54 Baby-Chemical How many job applications did it take for you guys to find a job after graduation?

For me it took 300-350 applications before I landed a Software Dev job at a small (~10 employees) company in my metro area. I'm just wondering if this is a normal amount in today's market, or if other new grads had an easier or perhaps more difficult time finding a job. For reference, I have a B.S. Science in Software Engineering and didn't do any internships in college, but worked for 3 years as an Electronics Repair Technician during my time in school.
