2023.10.13 03:30 Dia_Borfs Post-TRADOC Thoughts (My final update post about my previous assignment)
Hello weirdos, the update that literally no one asked: my thoughts surviving TRADOC as permanent party. Please understand that this is my opinion, I don’t represent any specific unit and only sharing my firsthand account of experiences during the phases of my time teaching. I’ll add a TL/DR at the end so don’t worry about that. It’s taken me a couple of days to write this out and weeks on what to share since I have a few friends and one neighbor who know my account. I’ve had a “unique” experience while teaching so friendly reminder that what happened to myself may not line up to your experiences if you were also an instructor. With that out of the way, here is my final post on why I hated my time in TRADOC but incredibly happy for the golden moments while serving.
I’m going to try and format it based on themes so I don’t go down random rabbit holes and confusing anyone (to include myself).
The Rona-Era:
To keep from being political since so many shared their thoughts on here (see DoD 2021 position and DoD 2022 recission of said position) and I don’t wanna talk about the goings-on within the DoD. But I hated the fact that after all the masking, demasking to remasking to demasking part deuce, the cherry picking of DoD/DA policies within the schoolhouse was bad. Imagine having local leadership reminding you near daily that the safety of the trainees were of up most importance, while shrugging as multiple instructors were dropping like flies and forced to run back to back classes solo to prevent the dreaded deviation (also known as an exception to policy (ETP)) since the instructor to student ratio was wild and shifted near daily for my first two years. It got extra dumb when we were told we needed to write up those 4856s during that short 2021 stint whereas not wearing a mask is an automatic recommendation for a FG NJP, but kinda fell on deaf ears as it was coming down that we were going to be short on that recruiting mission and decided to let the drills run circles on the trainees. It was entirely annoying, stupid, and regardless of the change in rules we had to act like it was April 2020 for nearly two years.
EO:
Weaponized on day one when I was in the classroom. I won’t get into hardcore specifics cause I do support privacy of the personnel in question with two exceptions as I was a part of those situations directly. Please understand that I support the EO program and it’s variations cause it is important. What I can’t take seriously are people who weaponize it for personal gains and I take that shit stupid serious. Especially those under a training status. Fun fact, being told you can't go to formation without headgear doesn't mean you're a victim of racism.
Mini story, my first supervisor (FS) put in a complaint because he was given a lower rating on his NCOER. Fun fact, FS was deflecting and caused misdirection as people called out his racist and sexist actions. Bro was lazy af and got called out when he tried hooking up with one NCO’s wife, as well as trying to get cute with myself and my friend. Dude is a pervert and took an early retirement option during that rona vaxx separation push during 2021 because he was a SNCO long enough to gain tenure with little to no punishment and the unit wanted him out asap. Which the rona vaxx was faster than this pos getting his comeuppance.
SHARP:
I’ve already spoken on this topic before. This is my first story and the follow-up. But I do have two additions despite all that. Unofficially (in my opinion from first hand experience), sharp cases of cadre members being the victim are not a priority or taken seriously. Sharp reps out there can call reg and policy all day, but local unit execution may not jive and can run counter to policy with little to no resolution. In my case, the sarc had a drug deal with someone (will not deep dive, sharp depresses me enough) and remained in place until she was able to retire. I was already pissed that the sarc was very good friends with my disgusting FS, but nothing came out of it when I tried to make a formal report on the situation. Months later, my FS decided to come back to my place of work as an official retiree. I was so scared he was going to make these visits a common thing, so after a few nights of nightmares and at work flashbacks, I decided to reach out to Protect Our Defenders (POD). As a survivor of two SA incidents, the bs going on at that unit had done a number on me and got me thinking about my own self-worth. A dear friend who was the CO sharp rep helped me when I reported the incident from first story (see above) and I am forever grateful for his support and allowing me to vent. Especially when I had to work with certain people who reminded me of my past attackers and FS. I did get in contact with two local women survivors of MST through POD and the Service Women’s Action Network (SWAM), but I was denied help because I am still Active Duty and could triggerelapse the women’s current care. Local therapy wasn’t much help, as the focus some how steered toward the fact I’m LGBT. The therapist was a nice person, but it felt like it was focusing on politics and other crap that I decided to wait to seek therapy after my PCS. The fact I would pick up smoking randomly and having violent flashbacks isn’t a result for being LGBT, it was the assaults and the previous unit's nonsense. And I will not argue that fact. If it wasn't for my child and some of the best people I could've asked for to work with daily, I would've been focusing on an exit strategy. I can't speak on any further about POD, but I'm hoping it will pick up. I've nearly lost all hope on getting help and just want the nightmares to end.
NCO Business:
It took what felt like was two years before instructors were allowed to be taken as serious as the drills. Example given, when a student got caught with dip or vape the 4856 was written up but was thrown out because the drills didn’t witness the dip/vape firsthand. We were told this was a legal issue, and it was the norm until this past year. Unsure if other training units did this, but it was disgusting to know those who cheated the system got to graduate because either an instructor tried to correct the infraction or because “we’re not going to make recruiting mission.” On a serious note about the senior enlisted promotions as an instructor: it was kind of a gut check being informed how desperate we're to getting and retaining quality instructors while in the same breath admitting that any podium time and any tier of the instructor badges are seen as less valued at the centralized board.
Myself:
After everything above, the divorce, a bad dating situation and being a single mother at my new duty station, I’m slowly starting to digest exactly what the fuck had happened. Depression and hopelessness comes in waves. Some days are better than others. But my child is happier with where we're at. A better home, safer community, and getting to do my job without extra restrictions beyond the norm. For those in the know and read this, thank you for helping me feel hopeful as we developed our students and helping me move a majority of my stuff in the truck. For my neighbors, y’all are amazing and sweet. Thank you for the champagne and giving me that heads up that the travel voucher will take forever. Once I'm off duty tomorrow, I'm just going to go game with my kid, y’all stay safe and stay blessed out there.

Outgoing BN CDR doesn't actually get to it. Okay, I fix routing to new ones. BN S1 pool had bothered to touch it. Okay. Annoying.
They kick it back.
I, naively, thought it was because IPPS-A wouldn't properly let it pass to the new commander, that's happened before for reasons.
Nope.
Retirement counselings are on the older DA 4856, and not the one gifted to us by the last SMA.
So they kicked it back.

“Bad news, First Sergeant. We got a situation.”
“What? Is the Commander trying to authorize fleece jackets again?”
“Worse. Somebody just failed to stand at attention during retreat while indoors”
The wad of Skoal practically fell out of my mouth. “What kind of shitbag would do something like that? Flag honors are the ultimate responsibility: honorable, timeless, selfless. They represent true American freedom, not subject to arbitrary modifications by any Commander. Do we have any leads?”
“Not yet. But mark my words: we’re going to figure out who it was and we’re going to smoke the shit out of them… provided were within our rights under the regulations to do so.”
“Easy, Sergeant Major,” I said. “Any action under what the regulations offer is, by definition, correct.”
He laughed. “That’s why you’re the best I got, First Sergeant. Now you get out there and find that oxygen thief”
“Don’t worry,” I said. “I’m on it.”
I conduct PMCS my truck, ensuring that I remove the chock block and drip pan. Ten minutes later, I was on the scene. It was a normal Company HQ, strangled on all sides by grass. I hopped over it and went inside.
“Anyone gonna call "At Ease"?” I said, flashing my diamond and my jump wings and a small picture of SMA(R) Chandler. “Stand at Parade Rest!” They didn’t.
“Now, which one of you punks is going to confess to this infraction?” No one spoke up.
“Come on,” I said. “Don’t you all understand that the integrity of the profession of arms is at stake?”
It didn’t seem like they did.
“Seriously, Soldiers. Without someone taking responsibility, I’m just going to stand here and waste your time. Paperwork is fine, but I prefer being paid in push ups or flutter kicks.”
Nothing. These people were stonewalling me. It almost seemed like they didn’t care that the backbone of the Army had scoliosis.
I figured I could wait them out. I lit several cigarettes outside, smoking indoors would get me hemmed up. Just then, a POG with a beard made a break for it.
“Half-Right Face” I yelled.
Too late. He was already out the front door. I went after him.
“Stop right there!” I yelled as I ran. He was faster than me because I always try to avoid stepping on Sergeant Major's grass. Our country needs concertina wire around all grass, but, thanks to the incestuous interplay between our corrupt federal government and the Inspector General, it will never happen.
I was losing him. “Listen, First Sergeant isn't mad!” I yelled. “What would you consider an appropriate corrective action for your infraction? We can sit down and discuss it over a DA 4856!”
He turned, his hand shaped like a knife that the regulations forbade him to use. He pointed it at me and missed. I pulled my own knife-hand and pointed back. The authority lodged in a Second Lieutenant less than a foot from him. I knife-handed the LT again, on purpose.
“All right, all right!” the man yelled, snapping to parade rest. “I give up, First Sergeant! I confess: I ignored the flag.”
“Why’d you do it?” I asked, as I took down the leg's first line's information.
“Because I was afraid.”
“Afraid?”
“Afraid of an Army free from the concept basic human rights” he said. “I have a shaving profile.”
I wanted to haze the guy. Years ago, a soldier on profile got my battle buddy fired. Instead, I shook my head.
“Let this be a message to all your no shave profilers out on in the ranks,” I said. “No matter how many regulations you break, you’ll never take away the dream of an perfectly disciplined and ready force.”
He nodded, because he knew I was right. Then he thanked me for my service for correcting him.

It didn’t seem like they did.
“Seriously, Soldiers. Without someone taking responsibility, I’m just going to stand here and waste your time. Paperwork is fine, but I prefer being paid in push ups or flutter kicks.”
Nothing. These people were stonewalling me. It almost seemed like they didn’t care that the backbone of the Army had scoliosis.
I figured I could wait them out. I lit several cigarettes outside, smoking indoors would get me hemmed up. Just then, a POG with a beard made a break for it.
“Half-Right Face” I yelled.
Too late. He was already out the front door. I went after him.
“Stop right there!” I yelled as I ran. He was faster than me because I always try to avoid stepping on Sergeant Major's grass. Our country needs concertina wire around all grass, but, thanks to the incestuous interplay between our corrupt federal government and the Inspector General, it will never happen.
I was losing him. “Listen, First Sergeant isn't mad!” I yelled. “What would you consider an appropriate corrective action for your infraction? We can sit down and discuss it over a DA 4856!”
He turned, his hand shaped like a knife that the regulations forbade him to use. He pointed it at me and missed. I pulled my own knife-hand and pointed back. The authority lodged in a Second Lieutenant less than a foot from him. I knife-handed the LT again, on purpose.
“All right, all right!” the man yelled, snapping to parade rest. “I give up, First Sergeant! I confess: I ignored the flag.”
“Why’d you do it?” I asked, as I took down the leg's first line's information.
“Because I was afraid.”
“Afraid?”
“Afraid of an Army free from the concept basic human rights” he said. “I have a shaving profile.”
I wanted to haze the guy. Years ago, a soldier on profile got my battle buddy fired. Instead, I shook my head.
“Let this be a message to all your no shave profilers out on in the ranks,” I said. “No matter how many regulations you break, you’ll never take away the dream of an perfectly disciplined and ready force.”
He nodded, because he knew I was right. Then he thanked me for my service for correcting him.

I have recently gotten promoted to Sgt. let me start by saying I have a MAC book pro and I tried downloading the 4856. But it doesn’t actually give me the download option. It says “Open link in new tab” “Open link in new window” “Open link in incognito window” “Save link as…” “Copy link address” “Copy” “Copy link to highlight search google for “PDF”” “Inspect”
So it doesn’t give me an actual download option. I know normally you could download it and then open it in files. But i can’t seem to do that on a MAC book pro. Also I’m not trying to pay $20 a month for adobe either. Any suggestions?

Long story short, I am trying to find any army policies or regulations that cover medical resource misuse. I am TDY, and I just found out that PAs and clinic medics in my clinic have been trying to make a standardized DA 4856 to give to soldier's that misuse medical resources, like going to the ER for a cold or something else that should be covered in sick call. I have seen people abuse the medical system (often repeat offenders), and I have seen a need for something of this nature.
My concern is that abuse of Army Health Systems is subjective and hard to define, I cannot find any policies that provide insight or advice into this. My BDE, MTF, and hospital do not have policies or clear guidance into this either. I can see people getting into a bit of trouble by counseling people for misuse, especially when it is coming from an E5 68W. I am very wary of any type of counseling that pertains to anything HIPAA or access to care related. As soon as possible, I am going to consult legal for advise and guidance, but that is impossible for the next couple weeks.

I initiated paperwork and my S1 said they submitted it a few days ago with the Exit Counseling (DA 4856) but it hasn't shown in my personal action yet in IPSSA (I know to give it a few days since its an Army system). Does anyone know who or where I could contact to see the current status (or how far along) my transfer is? Do I just wait until it shows up in hrcapps ? (Appreciate any help).

The doc looks like it tries to automatically expand and add new pages based on the content of Key Points Discussion box, but then just copies everything you put in that box into every subsequent page. So you end up with multiple pages of the same thing.
Is this intended behavior and/or just me? It looks really jank lol, considering just using the old 4856...
