2024.05.14 17:22 Front-Friendship3152 I’ve been questioning Islam a lot lately..

I grew in a Christian and community. I believe I have a relationship with God and have been searching for answers regarding what is the “correct religion” - the Gospel has always spoken directly to my heart and I resonate and accept Jesus as my Lord and Saviour.
I do have religious trauma due to some personal experiences in a cult, churches and people who claimed to be Christian’s and all this has affected my journey on my personal faith.
In the past few months I’ve been in some weird situations in which I feel like Islam is pulling me, I’m reading the Quran and I also resonate with that perspective. Besides, I’ve encountered some Muslim people who seem to be (in my experience) more devoted to their beliefs and an actual example of the principles in their Holy book. I’m surprised by the conversions to Islam especially in the UK and the coincidences specifically in my life are so odd.
From a Christian perspective I’m I being put to test? Is this a spiritual attack?
I appreciate your prayers for clarity and direction and some words of wisdom if anyone has been through something similar.

2024.05.14 17:21 No-Buy5633 I have unintentionally enlisted myself into conversion therapy lol

(This is just a rant, but feel free to respond and call me out for being dumb; I need a hard shake and some sense.)
Situation: My country is homophobic, but the island I live on (I moved here a few months ago) is somewhat gay-safe, if not gay-friendly, since it's a touristic area and we have gay bars, etc. It is also known for its spirituality since the majority religion here is different from the majority religion in the country.
A few months ago, I went to a local spiritual healer here following a friend's suggestion. I am not really a believer, although I am interested in spirituality. I went there anyway because I was in such a mental mess and desperately sought help in any form. I told her why I was feeling low, that I had low self-esteem, and that I was heartbroken by failed relationships while desperately wanting one. I also felt lonely, especially since my family can't accept that I am gay. I emphasized that I don't feel anything wrong about being gay, especially since she mentioned some gays who came to her and changed, and I remembered she said that's okay, which made me feel more comfortable seeing her.
I came back a few times, and I initiated the second meeting because I just wanted to do something, even if it was pseudo-science or a placebo effect. When I asked to pray to the gods, I was like, please, I want to meet a guy and fall in love with him, and I want my hemorrhoids and whatever butt problems I have to go away so I could have satisfying anal sex lol.
At tonight's meeting, she kept talking about me being cured and being on "the right path," about the nature of being created as a man and woman. And that if I continue in my previous way of life, it's the way of death. I felt alarmed and asked her if she was referring to my homosexuality and if that was the reason I was miserable. She said yes, but not to worry because she had successfully cured 72 others. I protested that I came here not to be cured of my homosexuality as I feel nothing wrong about it, but she said she was just doing what my ancestors asked her to do and that many of her clients also said the same but were eventually cured. Turns out I am her patient number 73 to be cured of homosexuality without me asking for it.
I feel sad that once again, I can't find full acceptance as a gay person. It's just like what my other friends do: they are okay that I am gay but wish one day I will be back on "the right path." (I can't even trust my therapists because they are a Muslim/Christian)
What upsets me more is that I already have some thoughts about some of the things she said. Not about being cured, but about how my life is miserable as a gay person. I have no gay friends, struggle to find someone, feel lonely, and living in a homophobic place like this makes it harder to have safe discussions about gay sex health with doctors (so yeah it could be a way of death for me). Meanwhile, I am surrounded by people who are okay with me being gay but secretly pray the gay away from me. And although I am not religious, being raised in a religious society with religious friends, I can't help sometimes thinking if my butt problems are a "punishment" for engaging in gay sex. (And now she kinda waters these thoughts in my head.)
I don't think being gay is a curse, but I am cursed to be born, grow up, and live in this environment. I know I am old enough to not give a fvck, and take care of myself, but I am still in such an unstable mental health, while these are the people that make feel welcome and safe in a way, but with certain intentions.
So yeah, that's how I unintentionally went to a conversion therapy. As I said, this is just a rant, but feel free to respond and call me out for being dumb; I need a hard shake and some sense.

2024.05.14 17:01 No-Angel3 Gf 38/F wants to get married suddenly and 36/M refuse to. We spoken about it before and agreed we would never get married. What should I do?

So I ‘36/M’ has been dating ‘38/F’ for a little over a year now. So when we first started dating we put some ground rules into play that neither of us ever want to get married she’s been divorced twice and I have never been married since I’ve always said it since I was a child I’d never want to get married after seeing my mothers go thru multiple divorces as a child and knew that wasn’t for me. So fast forward to about 10-11 months into the relationship and she becomes super religious and I’m the total opposite being from a Christian family and I don’t even participate in my own families beliefs since I’m agnostic, so she’s been doing Shabbat every Friday with her family, cutting out certain things on eating now which prior we would eat all the time which is no big deal cause I’m still going to eat it and so when this whole religious crap started happening she started talking about marriage and before the conversation continued I told her don’t expect me to change my mind on marriage if you want to get married now cause it’s not gonna happen and then hits with me no sex out of wedlock which I told her that’s fine since there’s more to the relationship than just sex even tho it’s a big role to me and we had and AMAZING sex life prior. So now every chance she gets she’s brings up her new religious beliefs and marriage every chance she gets and I just change the subject and continue about what we are doing at the time, cause I said what I said and there’s nothing in this world that would change my mind on marriage. I was with my daughters mother for 16 years and never married her what makes you think I’m gonna change my mind only being with you for a year I’ve told her multiple times already I know it’s a asshole thing to say but it’s the truth. So idk what to do at this point honestly cause I really do love her but like I’ve said I don’t belijeve in that whole marriage crap. So what should I do in this situation should I ride it out and see what happens in the long run or just end it and go out separate ways?
Sorry for all the craziness but I suck at writing or expressing my feelings

2024.05.14 16:39 Delvestius Who do you think the Sabians were?

The Sabians are a mysterious group of people mentioned in the Koran. Early Muslims considered the Sabians "People of the Book," which also included Jews and Christians, and eventually other religions like Zoroastrianism and Hinduism.
The thing is nobody really knows who they were, so they've become identified with a plethora of peoples and religious groups including Gnostics, Hermeticists, Mandaeans, Manichaeans, Sabaeans and the Elchasaites.
So, who do you thing the Sabians were?

2024.05.14 16:32 Satvik_atheist How To Become Historian In New India.

Pick any religious text , high-light the words look similar to any modern country name.
Don't bother researching , how the country get it's name ? or what is the culture of country?
just start claiming how that country is part of AKHAND BHARAT. also pick up any caste or sub caste name similar to the name of the majority religion in that country (it's easy as we have have more than 3000 castes/sub-castes).
try to find any buddhist carving. if you can,
BOOOOM!!!
buddhism ==hinduism .
why??? because hinuds , shikhs and jains have the same personal laws in inida and same personal laws means same religions.
don't even bother to read buddhist text and buddhist culture, if some one argue buddhist are atheist, ask them if they are atheist why they have temples??
if you even can't find buddhism find any tribal carving with animal like GOD. prove how they are originally your god's animal avatar.
if you find christianity , claim jesus came to India for study for 20 years or something.
if you find jews claim YAHUDI HI YADAV HAI!!!
if you find MUSLIMS claim they are descendants of ravan. (still don't know how this is not illegal but it is what it is!!!)
by this few logic you can explain how whole world and even whole universe is hindu and part of AKHAND-BHARAT.

2024.05.14 16:29 c_awesomesauce1 Asking date about faith [Christians only]

I went on a date recently with this guy, we met a few days earlier at the library at my college when he came up to me and gave me a note. He was sweet and respectful, and we seem to have some things in common personality wise. However the thing is that I don't know anything about his faith. And now I'm thinking about how if he says he is not Christian that basically means the relationship is over, because we should not being unequally yoked. Now I know I need to ask him about this. I'm not sure if I should ask over text now or wait until our 2nd date that we have planned already. Or how exactly to go about it. I feel like it would seem really abrupt for him because everything seemed to be going well. I didn't want to hurt his feelings. I also feel like it could be more awkward in person, but I don't know. I kind of want to find out as soon as possible so that if it isn't going to work we can move on.

2024.05.14 16:12 Mei_Flower1996 Religious angle for believing humans are supposed to eat animal products?

Hi everyone,
I've never been vegan, but I agree with the ideas presented in this sub.
I'm Muslim, and we believe God created livestock for the sole purpose of nourishing humans. Eid ul Adha involves killing an animal and donating the meat.
Is that the case in other monotheistic religions ( Christianity, etc)? That livestock were created to nourish humans?

2024.05.14 15:45 kashnine Muslim man with Christian women

Hello my Christian brothers and sisters. I have been dating a Christian girl for 7 months right now and we are extremely in love with each other. We even planned living together and get married in the future. We both agreed to respect each other religion and I would let her practice and help her in her religion. She told me that I'm the best boyfriend she's ever had and that I'm the only one who treated her right compared to her past relationships.
However, we’ve been thinking about our differences (religion). In Islam, mens are allowed to marry Muslims, Jews and Christians woman. But I don’t know if a Christian woman can finish her life with a Muslim man.
I know personally some Christians woman who have been marrying mens from differents religions. For example, 2 of my muslim friends will be marrying Christians womens.
Are Christians womens allowed to? That’s why I need some advices from you, my brothers and sisters please.

2024.05.14 15:33 Suspicious-Row-3614 Unveiling Al-A'raf: The Heights, the In-Between, and the Day of Judgement in the Quran

Unveiling Al-A'raf: The Heights, the In-Between, and the Day of Judgement in the Quran
https://preview.redd.it/v7d1n2bw9e0d1.png?width=711&format=png&auto=webp&s=b561d82ae672258093d21d49afbc35d7cfec680d
The concept of Al-A’raf occupies a fascinating and thought-provoking space within Islamic eschatology, the study of the afterlife. It manifests in two ways: as the title of the seventh chapter (Surah) of the Holy Quran and as a potential waystation for souls on the Day of Judgement. Delving into the rich tapestry of Quranic verses and scholarly interpretations, we can explore the multifaceted nature of Al-A’raf.
1. Surah Al-A’raf: A Foundation for Understanding
The Surah itself, titled “Al-A’raf” (The Heights), lays the groundwork for the concept’s eschatological significance. Composed of 206 verses, this Meccan Surah (revealed before the Prophet Muhammad’s migration to Medina) covers a diverse range of topics including the creation stories of Adam and humanity (Quran 7:11-24), messages to previous prophets like Moses (Quran 7:143-158), and the importance of unwavering monotheism (Quran 7:59-64).
Crucially, within this Surah, we find the first mention of Al-A’raf as a specific location. Verses 46 and 47 introduce the concept:
These verses paint a picture of Al-A’raf as a dividing barrier separating Paradise (Jannah) and Hellfire (Jahannam). The inhabitants on this partition recognize the dwellers of both Jannah and Jahannam by their distinct markings.
2. Al-A’raf in Islamic Eschatology: A Place of Waiting?
The Quran doesn’t provide extensive details about Al-A’raf’s inhabitants or its exact function. However, scholars have drawn upon various hadiths (sayings of the Prophet) to elaborate on this concept. Many interpretations depict Al-A’raf as a purgatory-like state for those whose good and bad deeds have equal weight, preventing them from immediate entry into either Paradise or Hellfire.
The Quran itself hints at this possibility. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah (SWT) states:
This verse underscores Allah’s meticulous accounting of both good and bad deeds. If a person’s deeds are perfectly balanced, Al-A’raf could serve as a temporary holding place until a final judgement is made.
3. Potential Inhabitants of Al-A’raf: The Quran and Hadiths
Hadiths offer some insights into those who might dwell in Al-A’raf. Here are some possibilities:
  • Those with Balanced Deeds: According to a hadith narrated by Sahih al-Bukhari, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said, “There will be people whose deeds are evenly balanced (between good and bad) on the Day of Judgement. They will be admitted to Al-A’raf until Allah judges between them.” (Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith: 6531)
  • Neglect of Obligatory Duties: Another hadith, narrated by Musnad Ahmad, suggests that those who neglected obligatory duties but performed good deeds might find themselves in Al-A’raf. (Musnad Ahmad, Hadith: 17025) This aligns with the Quranic emphasis on fulfilling one’s religious obligations (Quran 2:43).
  • Martyrs Defending Family or Property: Some hadiths mention that individuals who died defending their families or property might also reside in Al-A’raf. (Sunan an-Nasa’i, Hadith: 4052) This resonates with the Quran’s message of protecting life and property (Quran 5:32).
4. Al-A’raf: A Temporary Abode or a Final Destination?
The Quran remains silent on the duration of a soul’s stay in Al-A’raf. However, some hadiths suggest it’s a temporary state. A hadith narrated by Sahih Muslim describes the inhabitants of Al-A’raf eventually interceding for those in Hellfire, implying their eventual departure (Sahih Muslim describes the inhabitants of Al-A’raf eventually interceding for those in Hellfire, implying their eventual departure (Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 2901). Ultimately, Allah’s infinite mercy may allow them to enter Paradise based on their good deeds or through the intercession of prophets and righteous people.
The Quran also offers verses that hint at the possibility of redemption from Al-A’raf:
  • Surah Al-Zumar (The Troops), verse 53: “Say, ‘O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful.’”
This verse emphasizes Allah’s vast capacity for forgiveness, suggesting that even those who might initially reside in Al-A’raf due to transgressions could eventually be granted entry into Paradise through sincere repentance and Allah’s mercy.
5. Al-A’raf and Comparative Religion: A Look at Similarities and Differences
The concept of Al-A’raf bears some resemblance to the Christian idea of purgatory, a place of purification before entering heaven. However, there are key distinctions. Purgatory is generally considered a fixed stage in the Christian afterlife, while Al-A’raf’s purpose and duration remain open to interpretation within Islam. Additionally, the concept of intercession plays a more prominent role in Islamic eschatology, with prophets and righteous people potentially advocating for those in Al-A’raf.
6. Conclusion
The concept of Al-A’raf serves as a reminder of the complexity of divine judgement and the vastness of Allah’s mercy. While details remain open to interpretation, the concept underscores the importance of striving for good deeds throughout one’s life. By living a life aligned with Islamic principles, we increase our chances of attaining Allah’s pleasure and a blissful hereafter.
Call to Action
For further exploration, consider delving deeper into the Quran and hadiths on the Day of Judgement and the importance of righteous actions. May Allah guide us all on the straight path and grant us a place in Jannah.

2024.05.14 15:23 throwaway383293848 How can I stop feeling towards a colleague who wants me to convert to Islam?

TYPO IN TITLE IT SHOULD SAY HOW CAN I STOP FEELING ANGRY***
I’m born Christian and I will forever be a Christian and I absolutely love my religion.
Long story short, I have a white colleague who is dating a Muslim man from Palestine. She is slowly becoming obsessed with the Middle East and with Islam and I have a strong feeling he is behind it. She tells me she’s going to convert to Islam and often talks to me about leaving America to go live in the Middle East and raise her kids there. She’s often talks about how she’d like other people to experience Islam and today she said she had a dream that I was a hijabi woman (that’s just a few examples).
Unfortunately being middle eastern myself, I struggle with resentment towards Muslims because I have had family members killed by them in the Middle East. I am trying to work on becoming a more forgiving person but the topic of Islam and the Middle East makes me uncomfortable and angry.
I don’t talk about religion or politics at work and I feel like it’s not a place to talk about it (I am a government lawyer).
I’m stuck on what to do. She is overall a nice person who is being influenced by her boyfriend. I know I’m a bad person for being angry which is why I’ve come here for advice :(

2024.05.14 15:21 MagusX5 History and the House of David

Apologies for the text, but I find this fascinating;
The Bronze Age of civilization in the west (read, from the Middle East through Europe) completely collapsed in approximately 1150 BC. Historians aren't entirely sure why, though there are a lot of theories. One thing people point to are 'Sea Peoples', which are groups of either invaders or immigrants fleeing or causing parts of the collapse. All we know is that it happened, we have no idea why.
This civilization, based on bronze, was very advanced. The two main components of bronze are copper and tin. Tin is actually pretty rare, so they didn't have a lot of tin mines
So how does this apply to Christianity?
Archaeologists in the Levant theorize that the Philistines may well have been Greek immigrants, escaping the collapse and moving east. There are a lot of artifacts from the area (Dating to after the collapse) with Greek appearing styles. These artifacts have more in common with ancient Greek artifacts than they do other Levantine groups.
Now we do know that the bronze age empires did have international trade, but these artifacts date from after the collapse.
Meanwhile, King David is said to have reigned roughly starting 1,000 BC. There's a block of stone from the 9th century BC that calls out the House of David. This means that King David was likely real. Especially since the stone would have been carved within about 100 years or so of David's death at the least, and no more than 200 or so at the most. That is a very short period of time in which to fabricate a fictional king.
SO, what does this mean?
It is entirely possible that David became king of an Israel that existed because the surrounding empires around them collapsed, giving them the freedom to establish their own kingdoms. In addition, this also means that David might well have gone to war with ancient Greeks who moved from Greece to the Levant to escape the collapse of their civilization.

2024.05.14 15:04 OkUniversity2374 Ex-Muslim of the Shia Sect

I understand the sentiments of the majority of the people from these and similar groups who've left Islam on account of the multiplicity of contradictions in the Quran, as well as the Ahadith of Sihah Al Sittah, as well as the Sahih Tafasir of the Quran from the Sunni sect.
I don't even need to delve into the historical personage of Mohammad from the perspective of the aforementioned Sahih works. From the Pedophilia, the killings and beheadings, and the later conquests on the part of those who allegedly came after him, those are all well documented and argued upon by relevant parties, extensively.
In the Shia sect, we understood that "people apostated after Mohammad" but the number of people to whom this Apostasy is ascribed often varies. Herein lies the very first contradiction of Islam in general, and Sunni'ism I particular: The Apostasy Wars, as was waged by the first Sunni Caliph, Abu Bakr. Abu Bakr, as Islamist books tell us, sent armies left and right, fighting people all over the place, and killing well over 40,000 people or more in the course of 1 year. Abu Bakr was killing people whom 1. He thought had "apostated," (his definition of them apostating is the fact that they refused to give Bay'ah to him and even those who did give Bay'ah, withheld Zakat from him, so in his Ijtihaad they had apostated. 2. Those who withheld Jizya (Islamist/Arab tax imposed on the conquered people.)
The books also tell us that there were various people who had come out claiming to be prophets, after Mohammad. A well known name in that accusation is "Musaylama." Abu Bakr also slaid these people and their armies. But here is the strange part: what we know about Musaylama is what we have been told by Abu Bakr and his supporters. An example would be analogous to Hitler, destroying all the Jews, and then living to tell the tale about how he did the world a favor by annihilating all Jews from the face of the earth. i.e. writing the narrative from HIS perspective. Was it Abu Bakr who had apostated, or the people HE was killing for having apostated?
The number of people who claimed to be Prophets AFTER the supposed or alleged existence of Mohammad is a testament to the nonsensical absurdity of the Islamist claim that "Mohammad is Khatim al-Anbiya." It is no wonder that early Islamists had to enshroud their newly created mythical prophet into a Supreme prophet who is not only the best-of-the-best but also "the seal of Prophethood," to the extent that such absurdities have been sold to us through various Ahadith from the Sihah Al Sitah that say "Ya Ali, you are to me like Haroon was to Musa, except there will be no Prophets after me." This idea of this fictitious mythical prophet being embedded into the minds of a generation of illiterate and improvised people was further intensified by over 8 centuries of Persian propaganda throughout the Abbasid dynasty.
Going back to Abu Bakr, having killed people, I doubt that Abu Bakr, Uthman, Ali, or Umar, etc ever actually existed. Muawiyah, on the other hand, is pretty well preserved in terms of the fact that we have coins from his time that depict the Christian Cross. The Ummayad dynasty were more than likely just an offshoot branch of Christianity based on the fact that coins from their time have no mention of a "Mohammad," nor of "Islam" as a religion. But on the contrary, show the Cross.
Islam, as a religion, has been plagiarized and stolen off of various different sources. Christianity, Hinduism, Judaism. The Quran itself is an amalgamation of multiple myths from different sources that came before, during, and after it. The entire religion was not canonized until several centuries after the supposed existence of the child lover prophet. Although, to be fair, Mohammad, from the perspective of the Shias was not married to a 6 year old child.
The Abbasids and Ommayads had several back and forth bloody civil wars, and even prayed their respective prayers in different directions. "Islam" as a mythical cult came several centuries after Pedo Mo, and the form and structure of Islamism varied based on the culture of the people who adopted the myth. The only people who usually tended to and continue to benefit from this cultic myth are the ones sitting at the pulpits and stands, preaching the mythical garbage that comes from this almost Satanic cult. Everyone else at the bottom tends to be poor and blindly following the speaker.
While this is one of many posts I plan to be doing, this is just an introductory post. I'm certain that neither Mohammad, nor the "Rashidun" Sunni Caliphs, nor the 12 Shia Imams ever actually existed. The only sources that claim they ever existed, happen to be Muslim sources. The historicity of any of these characters, but most importantly the historicity of Pedo Mo himself are all accounts of their nonexistence.

2024.05.14 14:40 Puzzleheaded-Math729 19, about to be 20 in like some days, India] F4M, online/anywhere

I've been thinking of posting on this sub for a while haha so here it goes, frankly I've given up the idea of dating. Fair disclaimer, I would wanna get in a talking stage for a while if we vibe and then take things further from there, if that's cool with you. Please do not send me a dm if you're here to just fool around and not want something serious, there are already way too many subs for that.
Include a pic if possible, there have been times when I was having an awesome conversation and then saw the pictures and realised that I wasn't attracted to the other person at all, and telling them that was just upsetting 😭.Now that we have that out of the way, let's get into it
I'm into psychology (psy major), reading fiction, gaming (you can stream games for me on discord haha), music and I love solo traveling, and touring Europe is on my bucket list.
Learning about different cultures is something I'm into, so bonus points if you can teach me something about your culture. I also write poetry but have stopped doing that over the last few months coz of academic stress. 🫡 I'm openly atheist as well so debates are welcome as long as it has logic in it, and not just insults 💀😭
I am a feminist so I wanna date someone who shares the same mindset. I don't mind dating someone in long distance, but it would be better to date someone from either UK or US, since I might migrate there to study. I've been in one relationship before, it was LDR if that matters. I'd say I'm pretty enough lol, willing to share pictures after we've established a friendship.
I like sharing cat memes, and I think I have a fun and cute personality. I also love Indian ethnic wear, like sarees, lehenga, bangles, bindis, jhumka etc , I think it looks very pretty.
I'm 5'7, light brown skin, jet black hair, the features I like the most of mine are my eyes and my cheeks lol, coz I think it looks cute when I smile haha. I'm into taller men though, atleast 5'9 and max 5'11. I'm not really into men with facial hair. Exceptions exist ofc, like if we're very compatible for example:) I want someone who is caring, loving and prioritizes spending time with me, and makes me feel wanted. And if you're good/average looking that's great too, attraction is subjective ofc unfortunately.
I don't have any limitations about where you're from, as long as you're not a creep or bot/scammer lol, and please be in the age range of 20- 23. Please no muslims/middle eastern dudes, because that would simply not work because of obvious reasons.
Just say anything abt bananas or pineapples so that I know you read this post. And please let me know your ASL (age, gender, location), hobbies etc so that I know more about you :)
And if possible please let me know why you reached out to me, especially if we're from different cultures.
Looking forward to hear from you. Byeeeee🙂
{May take a while to respond coz of reddit being a glitchy b * tch}

2024.05.14 14:18 Swimming-Donkey-247 Those that disagree with penal substitutionary atonement theory, why did Jesus have to come and what does accepting a Christ mean?

I have always been taught PSA. In fact I didn’t even know that there was something different until a year ago and I’m 31 years old.
I was taught that because Adam’s sin, we, who are all his children have a sin nature. And because of our sin nature, we can NOT be perfect. It is physically and spiritually impossible for us to do so.
And that God being perfect cannot allow sin in his presence. Therefore Christ came and died for us paying for the sins that we could not pay for. Our past, current, and future sins. And if we are to “accept Him” and believe that and apply His death on the cross to ourselves, then we will be saved. That salvation rests in Christ alone.
But if PSA is, according to orthodox Christianity, a false doctrine, then why did Jesus need to come? Because atheists and Muslims have always asked why God can’t just simply “forgive”. And why did He have to send His Son.
I was told that because God is just and that he can not simply forgive and forget”. That someone had to take on that punishment and because of His love for us, he decided to take that punishment on Himself so we don’t have to.
So if there is no “punishment” that needs to be had then what is the point of Christ’s death? Why do we need to accept Christ? And what about our sins? How will God forgive that?

2024.05.14 14:13 PiranhaPlantFan From Demon to Daemon and back to Demon...

In Islam, there are generally three types of supernatural beings (malaika, jinn, shayatin) who sometimes pass over into each other. While the jinn are assumed to be genuine Arabian (or some have suggested Persian) entities, the malaika and shayatin are considered to be the result of an universalist approach of monotheistic religion. The malaika former deities of Mediterranean Pantheon, reduced to natural powers of the supreme Godhead, and the shayatin their malevolent counterparts who tempt people into sin and accuse them at the heavenly court, are often contrasted by the human-like genie. The latter are seen as remnants of ancestor cults, the spirits of the deceased worshipped and venerated to inherent the powers and attributes of those who came before us (and where we got the term 'genes' from).
These neutral spirits were later assimilated to intermediary spirits who move between the heavens and the Earth. These "daemons" became evil only in as far as they were identified as "pagan" allies by the newly monotheistic Hebrews and Christians. Later, when Muslims read the Arabic translations of the Greeks, they integrated them into their own understanding of the world. Here, we can see that the lines between a "devil" and a "jinn" already begins to blur, are these neutral Daemons guilty of association. Many contemporary neo-pagans defend the "demons" on base of the neutral to benevolent origin of the meaning "daemon".
However, is it possible that the daemons themselves have a much more sinister origin than generally expected?
The German Wikipedia reads:
The Great Duden's dictionary of origins gives the meaning of demon as "evil spirit, an intermediate being between God and man" and traces it back to the Greek δαίεσθαι daíesthai "(dis)part, divide, allocate" and "be divided". Therefore, the basic meaning of demon is derived from “distributor and allocator (of fate)”. Interesting are the further relationships of δαίμων daímōn - on the one hand to the Greek word for people δῆμος dēmos - as in democracy -, on the other hand and even further to “time” (also English time; tide[(n)hub]/tide, English tide). ; see also line, target, newspaper) in the sense of “section, compartmentalized”: All of these are linguistically or etymologically derived from the Indo-European root word *da[i]- for “to divide, to tear, to cut up”, which is also German “Devil” and Latin diabolus are based.
Unfortunately, the German Wikipedia works less with citations than the English one. The etymological origin, however, is academic consensus. (Duden 2020) More interesting is the notion of "dividing". Were daemons originally believed to "divide" or "separate" people? Similar to how Muslim scholars construct the name of Satan of the Hebrew ‘azala (Separation) and il (suffix for angelic names). (Terrance Michael Patrick 2014) Or the (pseudo-) etymological derivation of the term "shaytan" asserting that it signifies a creature distant from Allah. (Mustafa Öztür, 2009).
Are the daemons actually just devils misinterpreted as potentially benevolent beings? How does the general idea that jinn can convert to Islam align with this?

2024.05.14 12:56 UpsetAppeal2154 I regret leaving my wife.

I'm using a throwaway account as I don't really people currently in my life to know this.
I (30MtF) left my wife (27F, let's call her D) two years ago. The divorce was finalized about two months ago, and I wish I could go back.
I met D eight years ago, while I was homeless. She and her family helped me get a job and my first apartment, she always showed me an incredible amount of love and support, and she was absolutely wonderful in so many ways. But D was also an evangelical Christian and incredibly transphobic and homophobic. I found this out shortly after we met. At the time, I knew I was trans, bisexual, and I was a pagan. I probably should have walked away then.
Unfortunately, due to an incredible amount of trauma in my childhood and adolescence, I have a tendency to develop new versions of myself for those I'm around. The "me" that took over my life during this time decided "he" was a cisgender, bisexual man who refused to "act on" his "sinful" desires after becoming a Christian. Still, early on that "me" didn't have as strong of a hold.
Once, when we'd been dating for a few months, we were hanging out with a friend who showed us Rocky Horror Picture Show for the first time. Neither of us really had any idea what it was about. We watched it, and we were both incredibly uncomfortable for entirely different reasons. She brought me to work (I worked overnights at this time) and then while I was at work we fought over text and nearly broke up because of this damn movie. I didn't like it because it seemed fairly transphobic to me, especially when Dr. Frank-N-Furter raped the guests. (I now recognize this movie has a big place in queer culture but I still can't help but see it as kind of offensive.) D thought it was disgusting that the movie even included a trans character.
Eventually the "me" that had formed to be who she wanted me to be took over full-time and committed to stay with her and fight the "urge to sin." We dated for a few years and then got married. And honestly, this feels like one of the best times in my life sometimes, even though I know I was miserable.
I've always looked fairly feminine, and had fairly long hair and a pretty alternative style that often included makeup. I'd get "mistaken" for a girl pretty frequently when we were out, which only increased when she got me a super cute coffin-shaped purse for an anniversary. She'd always get super upset and defensive on my behalf, which hurt but she couldn't know it.
Sometimes during our marriage, she was reading an article about some state or another not accepting the "trans panic defense" and started ranting about it. I knew what she was talking about but on the off chance I was wrong I asked her to elaborate. She said it was when a trans person comes into the bathroom or hits on you and you assault or kill them because you panic. I tried to calmly explain that I thought it was good that wasn't being accepted because you shouldn't be assaulting or killing people regardless of whether they're trans or not, and it sounded like just a way to hurt trans people and get away with it. She came up with this wild argument and I just let her "win" because I didn't want to lose her. But I never felt fully safe with her again.
She liked it when I wore makeup, and once her sister told me she liked how I was a "man who was secure in his femininity but didn't feel like I needed to be a woman." (This was literally a month before I left to transition.) D agreed with her sister.
Around four years ago made a new friend at work, a nonbinary person I'll call S, who invited me to play DnD with them and their husband (a trans man) when they quit that job. By the time we'd bee playing for about six months, being around other trans people had reawakened the other parts of me, the parts that were closer to who I really am. I re-realized I was trans through our time together, and they started encouraging me to leave her and be my authentic self.
I left D about four months before our five-year wedding anniversary. She had gone through my phone, found messages between me and S about plans for me leaving and my being trans, and confronted me while I was in the shower. I quickly finished my shower and got out, had a six hour long conversation with her about this and tried to get her to understand. Eventually she just said "But you're not a woman and you never will be!" Without a word, I gathered up some essentials and left for S's house. S and I went back to that house while she was at church on Sunday and grabbed everything I owned, and then went to her mom's house to do the same. D and her whole family were there so I was trying to avoid questions and begging and pleading and crying from not only D, but her mom, sister, and brother to stay and give this trans thing up. I told D that if she wanted me to stay, I'd be staying as her wife and she'd have to accept that. She couldn't. I left.
Over the next couple months we spent a lot of time talking. D was trying to convince me to come back, to fall in love with her again. But I hadn't stopped loving her, I'd just gotten sick of hating myself. I told her that. I told her I wanted nothing more than to come back, but I couldn't do it if it meant going back to wanting to die every time I saw myself in the mirror and hating her briefly every time she "corrected" someone on my gender. I told her if she wanted me back, she'd need to support me in my transition. She still couldn't do it.
The last straw was when Michael Knowles called for the eradication of "transgenderism" (trans people). With that and the hundreds of anti-trans bills being introduced, I was scared. I texted D for comfort and instead got into a whole big argument with her. She kept trying to say the anti-trans bills were a good thing, and when I brought up the Michael Knowles thing she said she'd watched that speech and agreed with him. She said eradicating "transgenderism" would be a good thing. I sent her back a long text about the definition of genocide and how you can't separate "transgenderism" from transgender people, and eradicating "transgenderism" would require eradicating transgender people. We never talked again except about our divorce.
The thing that gets me though is that she's always been very anti-racist and speaks out against prejudice of most other kinds. She just never got it through her head that the same reasons she felt so strongly about that are why she should accept LGBTQIA+ people.
Now, it's been about two years since I left her. I have been on hormones for over a year, and I've never been happier with myself. These two years have been absolute hell in other ways. I have no stability, I lost my job, I've lost friends and family and all kinds of other traumatizing events that would make this post a literal novel. I've been suicidal in the past over stuff a lot smaller than this, but now, in the face of almost overwhelming and crushing despair, I'm still nowhere near that point again. I love myself. I am, for the first time in my life, living for myself.
I now have three wonderful partners (polyamory, they are all fully aware and consent, one of them has four other partners of their own) who love and accept me for who I am, and I love them all so much.
And yet. Despite all of that. Despite the pain D caused me, I still love her. I think I always will. And lately, it seems like all I can think of is the good times. And there were so many good times... I wish I could go back. I want her to love me again. And if she texted me tonight and told me she accepted me, I don't know if I could stay away. And this love I still feel... It's the most painful thing of all.
