Wanted to give this scent a try, but I’m always reading warnings about purchasing discontinued scents from decant sites, as they might be watered down.
Figured I’d try here, or I’d be grateful for any recs of other places to look (aside from FB’s Fragrance Marketplace. I can’t join it because my primary FB account has little use, so their bot keeps rejecting me. Hi friends, I'm back with thoughts on my new Nui Cobalt Critters! For my reviews of 24 past Critters (including all of the Rabbits and Squirrels), see my recent post HERE. As I wrote before, this collection isn't entirely sweet cuddly woodland creatures, but it does have a lot of those, including three of my all-time favorite Nui Cobalts: Little Brown Rabbit, Little White Rabbit, and Lilac Rabbit (so of course I had to try this year's new Rabbit!) Here are my thoughts on five of this year's new releases, with an unexpected favorite...
Ordering specs: Nui Cobalt's website is easy to navigate, shipping is very affordable at $3.45, items come very securely packed, and customer service is always spectacular. I don't think I've ever placed an order that took more than 2-3 business days to ship (and recently it has usually been literally the very next day). Samples are generous - 1.15 mls at least - in vials with wand caps. Each order comes with one free sample, chosen by them (there’s no box to insert requests).

Golden Retriever [Sunflower, amber resin, budding dogwood, fenugreek, and fresh-baked bread] Toast! A warm, ambery, spiced scent featuring toast made from a slightly sweetened bread. It's remarkable how sunny and summery this is - yet it's unmistakeably toast, and I keep getting distracted by this scent as I do other things, absentmindedly wondering where the breakfast is. If you like Poesie Amaterasu [Golden sandalwood incense, rice milk, bright cardamom, amber, dry wheat, and sunflowers], you'd love this; it has that same amiable warmth (though, of course, without the cardamom). As it starts to dry, the botanicals (the dogwood and fenugreek) come out more strongly (still with spiced ambery toast as a strong base note).
Red Admiral Butterfly [Blood orange, nasturtium flower, coriander, subtle blackwood, wild strawberry, and fresh garden basil] - This strawberry-blood orange combination is fabulous - the blood orange actually doesn't stick out much by itself, but it makes the strawberry note super juicy and takes away the candied artificiality of most strawberry notes in perfume. LOVE. I'm not super into this strong basil note, though. I love fruity-florals, but not so much fruity-herbals, and this is very much "juicy strawberry + basil and other dried herbs from a witch's cottage" (the "other dusty herbs" bit must be from the coriander note?). If they ever do that strawberry-blood orange combo again, I'll be all over it, it's quite stunning!
Black Sheep [Clean lamb's wool accord, myrrh resin, black seed, ambrette, and barely a whisper of oudh] - This is dusty twilight in a bottle. It's peaceful evening; it's cozy winter snuggles; it's the exhale when you can finally rest. It's undeniably dark, but soft and gentle, and I'd even describe it as gauzy. There is indeed but a whisper of myrrh and oud, just enough to make it dusty and dark, with the softest (and totally non-sheepy) cashmere and clean, slightly powdery ambrette. It doesn't have great longevity, lasting just under half a day on me, but holy wow is it amazing. I didn't know what to expect with this one - just looking at the notes, it's easy to think it could be too smoky or harsh - but it's beautiful.
Black Swan [Smooth tobacco, wild violet, humid black orchid, Peru balsam, clove bud, and a touch of star anise] - This feels like the bolder cousin of Black Sheep - it shares the same kind of dark, dusky beauty, but is significantly stronger, bolder, and less cuddly. The violets and anise (licorice) are strongest, with a really fruity purple plum/fig note too that's not at all listed but definitely arrives on my skin, over a base of the smoothest tobacco. Husband loves this tobacco. "Bring me that bottle," he declared upon sniffing my wrist, "I want to see what it does on my skin." And woah, it's SO different on him - the balsam is SO much stronger, making this a woody tobacco with a gently floral background. Are any of us surprised that he snaffled it?
Harlequin Rabbit [Nutmeg and tonka bean nuzzle up against toasted marshmallow, auburn cashmere, white pepper, black tea, and a trace of carrot seed] - Where Little Brown Rabbit is the snuggly evening one, Little White Rabbit is the clean elegant one, and Lilac Rabbit the soft pretty one, Harlequin Rabbit feels to me like the rainy-day one. I love this concept of the harlequin rabbit - that's a real rabbit coloring, by the way, and SUPER pretty, look it up! - created here by the Rabbit base plus black and white notes. This scent features a strong marshmallow note, the pretty, clean soapiness of Little White Rabbit, and malty notes not yet recognizable as black tea. It's cheeky, to be sure, but it also feels young, like it needs time to grow into itself. Nui Cobalt has a gorgeous black tea note, but it's surprisingly (and disappointingly) not that strong in this scent. Right now, Harlequin Rabbit feels like tea-dusted marshmallows (plus that soapy cottonflower note) rather than the more autumnal "rich black tea with marshmallow sweetness and a peppery bite" that I'm hoping it will develop into. I think it'll get there with a little aging, and indeed, the black tea and white pepper have already become stronger just over the course of my multiple wears of this, one a few days after its arrival and the other just yesterday (a week and a half later). Meanwhile, Husband interestingly smells generic "spices" from the tea and pepper, and says that the scent overall reminds him of Christmas markets (and he's quite enthusiastic in his praise of this one on me).

Personally...

I like Harlequin Rabbit (and it will certainly join my collection, standing alongside my other beloved Rabbits) but I don't yet love it as much as I thought I would. I really do think it just needs time to finish growing into itself. Black Sheep is the quiet standout for me - she's soft and unassuming, but she's a stunner. Red Admiral Butterfly is also quite a triumph - that glorious juicy strawberry! - and anybody who likes (or at least won't mind) the herbal notes should absolutely give it a try. All five of these truly have such artistry and strength of character, so you can't go wrong if you pick the ones that have notes you love.

November 11th 2022: Emailed northwell health for the first time, they emailed back saying to call. I was too anxious so I avoided it for a few months.
Called northwell a few months later but got too anxious talking to the person who picked up. They were being normal and talking normally, it was just personal anxiety on my part.
October 2022 - Early March 2023: Spent time talking to trans friends and family members about their timelines and processes for top surgery.
Looked into Penn medicine for a bit but wasn’t happy with the surgeons there, specifically as a nonbinary person. The patient navigational team however is lovely.
March 2: emailed Penn health patient navigation
March 3-10: correspondence and phone calls w patient navigation (absolutely wonderful people, some of the easiest phone calls I’ve ever had) Got lots of into on surgeons, things I’d need, processes etc.
Date unknown: phone call to Penn medicine asking about surgeons and possibly setting up as a patient (v long wait time on phone) Surgeon I had heard good things about only works w CHOP program and I’m was too old for that program. Other surgeons I was v iffy on.
March 23rd: Back to square 1. Called northwell again to set up an appointment. Everyone I spoke to was really nice. Could have set up an appointment within the week but decided to wait till the end of the semester. Scheduled a trans care and primary care appointment for May
Couple of calls In between for confirmations. Trans care appointment got moved around a bit and ended up being moved to a phone call.
May 8th: Trans care call: Basic preliminary questions like: Emergency contact, what you’re looking for, are you thinking of looking into hormones, experience w dysphoria or dysmorphia, mental health, and eating/nutritional concerns, things you might want doc to know, piercings or tattoos, do you do any drugs or drink often, etc. total call time was about 20 minutes. Doctor was incredibly kind, I still experienced a good deal of anxiety but the call was super easy, welcoming, and friendly. Got sent contact referrals for the surgeons, as well as trans-friendly therapists under my insurance.
May 9th: started looking at list of therapists and making respective emails and calls. Checking per session costs and double checking insurance. Most charge 100-150 per session. Got in contact w one.
May 10th: Called w first therapist talking about what I’m looking for, where I am in this process, if parents are supportive, and talking about costs. She was very friendly and affirming, wants to have a few sessions to get to know me and my situation before writing a letter. Understandable and expected, but frustrating.
May 15th: Primary care appointment: Went to northwell health primary care, parkinglot was a little scary (just a large lot with a lot of cars) but everyone working there’s is super kind. Office is incredibly affirming, pride flags and lgbtq+ art everywhere. Gave my insurance card, filled out some paper work, got called in pretty quickly. I have a needle phobia and medical trauma so I was panicking a bit in the office, nurse was good w me about it and doctor was very kind, I just requested to not have any blood work done that day and that was totally fine, so I could schedule that at a later date and go w a friend. Recommended to get blood work done before scheduling a consult w a surgeon. Also prescribed me a single dose anxiety med for the bloodwork which I was very happy about. I found over time that the anxiety meds unfortunately do little to nothing for my panic attacks personally when it comes to needles but regardless having a doctor acknowledge and respect that fear and listen to me was incredibly helpful and reassuring.
May 30th: Got blood work done in a different lab, went w a friend. Scheduling for that is super easy, I think I did it online actually I don’t entirely recall. they do take walk ins but I made an appointment to minimize complications and make sure I could prepare properly. Front desk/lobby area was a little spooky, but I think that is mainly just bc of my social anxiety. They take a urine sample, you give them your prescription, eventually they call you over for blood work. Quick and easy, tech was v nice and having a friend with me was incredibly helpful. Probably the best I’ve ever done with a needle despite the fact that I did still panic and get very lightheaded lol.
Got blood work results back within the next couple days, all looks a-okay! Neat :)
June 15th This day was incredibly difficult. I had my first session with a therapist to establish some ground knowledge around my dysphoria and the way that I view myself. Top surgery is something that I know from research and related experience Can be difficult and expensive to get and can take time, so much of my prep work has been on the understanding of taking things a step at a time and just knowing that the current way things are doesn’t have to be forever. It allowed me to be able to live with myself while prioritizing my health better. This read to the therapist as “not having the level of dysphoria [she’s] come to expect and look for in someone who is trans” and was largely based off the fact that I don’t want to go on hrt. Past that point I started to break down because now my method of learning to live with myself felt like it was actively going to work against me and prevent me from getting top surgery. I’m not good at talking about my dysphoria, I can’t imagine it’s easy for anyone, especially to a stranger I just met. It was rough, and I felt incredibly mentally drained after ending the session.
June 19th Called it quits with the first therapist, I felt incredibly disrespected and the one session we had put me in a mental spiral for days. It can feel some times in this process like the people you have to get permission from need you to be severely depressed and unable to wait another second for this procedure just in order to take you seriously.
After I left that therapist, I immediately got back to the list to find someone new. Spoke to a new therapist via email, but my insurance is kinda weird (Blue Cross Blue Shield out of state) so its off putting to some people. This therapist recommended I go through the office she started out at (Heart and Soul Counseling)
————- Time Skip ——————
IM BACK its time for some record keeping. Got super overwhelmed and lost the energy to document my process for some time so here goes.
HEART AND SOUL COUNSELING: My experience w/ this therapy office was mostly good. The person in charge, Jesse, was absolutely lovely and responsive. Never spoke in person, but any text/email interaction was prompt, respectful, and kind. The office is stellar with email/text communication, so I only ever had to call them once when I was initially inquiring about the office. This is something I wish all therapy/counseling centers did better, eliminated a ton of my anxiety and hesitation to speak to therapists.
I got set up w someone as quickly as possible and established what my goal was (to acquire letter document for my surgery team). I attended multiple session w the therapist, she was a kind lady but the sessions were unfortunately p miserable for me. We didn’t fit well, but I was willing to stick it out rather than backtrack on my process. She also did not invalidate me or accuse me of not being trans which was a major step up from my first therapy experience. Once I acquired my letter I did stop therapy there, I kindly explained to the therapist that it wasn’t a good match, but I may honestly explore my options at the office in the future. Receptionist there was also lovely and they had a cool fish tank.
———- CONSULT STARTS HERE —————
July 19th: CONSULT!!! My mama and I went to Dr. David Whiteheads office for a consult. Parking was a nightmare so I’m super glad I didn’t have to drive for this one (ty mama). Consult went really well, and the staff were all super friendly. Dr. Whitehead is cool, very chill energy and a bit intimidating, but I’m scared of everyone so that’s nothing new. First question he asked me is what I wanted/what he could do for me which caught me more off guard than it should have? I didn’t realize going into this process how many times people ask you what you’re having done even if it’s already written down, because there’s so much variety in what you can look for in the results.
We talked about the procedure, went through a slideshow n stuff, and discussed how I wanted a flat chest w/ no nipple preservation. They made sure to specify that my mental health professional letter had to include that I did not want nipple preservation because thats technically a “non-standard” appearance. Also had the first breast exam I’ve ever had in my life. Can’t say i’m a fan (not that I need to worry about that anymore!) Took pictures n measurements n such, and also discussed recovery supplies and care w me and my mom.
August 9th: After a plethora of painfully awkward therapy sessions, a decent amount of crying, and a couple breakdowns in friends cars/backyards, I got my therapist letter and sent it to the surgeons office. It ended up needing minor revisions to which I contacted Jesse from Heart and Soul and he got me the revised letter immediately. Unfortunately the surgical coordinator was out of office for the rest of the month the next day ;w;. Is how it be.
September 12th: Got a call from Surgical coordinator mid-painting class that I stepped out to take. Started discussing surgical dates!! She was kind enough to email the dates to me which was lovely because I was absolutely shaking/mind blank haha. There was an option for January 8th which felt like an absolute miracle the way it would work with my school schedule. It would give me a solid two weeks recovery time before spring semester began. Because it would be a couple months out, I was asked to contact her in the second week of October to submit documents to insurance.
(Timeline note: earliest date offered was in early December)
October 10th: Documents sent to insurance, predetermination started
October 30th: Received mail from my insurance approving my procedure as medically necessary (YAY) But! This is also where things get,,, fun! Dr Whitehead’s surgical coordinator, Alyssa, is a blessing and was very helpful and prompt with me despite the fact that I had to email her pretty constantly during this general time which I still feel bad about.
Around this time, my mom got diagnosed with breast cancer, which I reported to the surgical coordinator because it influences my family history (grandmother also had breast cancer). It was asked that I get genetic testing done because this could impact my surgical procedure. Now I’m handling the setup on this between helping my mom in her process setting up consults and considering her options because there of course is a lot of crossover to the steps I’ve already completed and am familiar with.
November 1st: Very kind person at cancer genetics calls me, sends me a family history questionnaire to fill out before I can be scheduled to see a genetic counselor. Filled out the questionnaire the same day.
November 8th: Called cancer genetics to check about scheduling, office was not open so left a message. Got a call back later in the day. I have a virtual appointment with a Genetic counselor Tuesday the 14th. Current plan is a mailed saliva genetic test but I’m going to ask if theres anything I can do to get results/materials quicker. If I can’t get results/feedback by December 8th my surgery date may get deferred.
Trying not to stress too much because there is little to nothing I can do about this, and I just don’t want to be sad. I’ve kept telling myself throughout this process to not get excited and not let myself believe anything is solid because something could happen at any time that might mess up my schedule or plan, and If I convince myself I’m in the clear, those changes will hurt a lot more. So far I think thats been a good move, because this really sucks.
My surgery date is still officially scheduled as of now as well as my first post-op. I will also ideally have pre-surgical testing done December 18th should I be cleared by genetics in time (Fingers crossed!)
ALSO! Def lean on friends if/when you can during this process. It can absolutely be challenging, and having a support system is incredibly important and helpful. I’m super lucky to have really lovely and supportive friends that are around to listen to me and send me pictures of stupid little animals.
November 9th: My mama is scheduled for her double mastectomy on December 4th
November 10th: Did some shopping with my mama for recovery supplies for double mastectomy/top surgery. Having watched a million and a half transition/top surgery videos and tiktoks and having read all the blogs and posts and tweets makes you a great support for someone suddenly faced with an upcoming double mastectomy! We might go shopping this weekend for some button ups and zip ups for her, clothes shopping is better done when you can try stuff on
November 14th: Meeting w genetic counselor: Victoria Webb, one of the loveliest medical care workers I’ve ever met. Had a virtual appointment with her to discuss and set up genetic testing. I explained to her about my situation w the proximity of my surgery and tight deadline as well as my willingness to do a blood test instead of a saliva kit to get results quicker. She was so incredibly kind and good with me, ended up being able to do a saliva kit and get results in time she deserves every good thing in life.
December 18th: pre-surgical testing: This was at the main hospital, everyone was really nice but I had a really bad panic attack despite being on Xanax.
The process is sort of like getting a physical. Measurements like weight and blood pressure get taken, lots of preliminary health questions. The people working with me were really kind and I was very open with them about my anxiety, it was visually apparent though anyway because I started crying the second we even started talking about the blood draw.
Once the equipment was actually brought into the room I started to panic. Both of the women working with me were really kind and helpful and tried to distract me and keep me talking the entire time, but I did still have a really horrible panic attack. Every muscle in my body locked up and I lost all my color, took a bit to get back to a spot where I could move and talk properly because my speech was affected too. It was a bit scary but funny to think about in post. Thanked the medical staff for being patient w me as always, a good portion of the anxiety is also guilt about making things harder for them. Got through it tho. Def eat before presurgical if allowed, I didn’t and that probably didn’t help!!
———- SURGERY DAY ————-
January 8th:
Ok so surgery day:
This day was very scary. Got my phone call the Friday prior for my surgery time which ended up being 1pm and I was asked to arrive around 11. Got there at 10 and went in at 10:30.
Called up to check in then in waiting room till someone brought me back to change. I told her right away about my anxiety with the iv bc that’s legit all I could think about. Got changed right after. I was generally shaky and a little disoriented the entire time because I was panicking but everyone was very patient with me. Clothes and belongings go in a bag in a locker and you get two gowns one that faces back and one that faces front. I was given underwear and a pad as well because lucky me I got my period a couple days before my surgery.
The pre-op area is a lot of little cubicles with curtain divider things, blue soft chairs, and medical equipment. Everyone I met and spoke to was very kind, but any time someone even suggested starting my iv I would panic. I was informed it would have to be placed in my hand and that terrified me, I’m especially anxious and sensitive about my hands and fingers. I think doctors and nurses tend to misunderstand exactly where my fear is with needles and ivs. It isn’t the pain that scares me, but the concept of veins and and anything being in them. Even writing this right now is horrible so I’m going to stop w any further detail. I spent the entire two-ish hours of pre-op absolutely terrified about this iv.
I wasn’t really keeping track of time but dr whitehead came in to do markings for surgery. They had cool rainbow socks on,big fan. Having your chest drawn on and just like, moved around n shit is such an experience. Felt bad because I kept losing my balance but doctor Whitehead is cool and I am 98% less scared about them now.
Probably my most favorite person I met during my entire hospital experience was the anesthesiologist. I know he told me what his name was but I couldn’t focus on or retain information at the time. He told me we could essentially put me to sleep with gas before putting the iv in and for the first time in probably a solid week I felt like I could calm down a little. He took a look at my hand and arm to check my veins which always does freak me out a bit but I’m more used to that kind of thing at this point and I know nothing bad is going to happen. One of the nurses came in with the iv equipment and he let her know that were going to wait till in the or which was also incredibly helpful because I absolutely panicked when I saw that little supply kit again.
V nice lady brought me into the or, I’d never been in one before it was cool. They had a little music speaker which was really cool. Took off blue jacket gown and they helped me onto the table. They put a warm blanket over my legs and my chest to help me calm down. Before long they gave me a mask w fun happy sleepy time gas, they let me keep my arms on my chest for a while which was really nice because I was still scared. I started getting loopy pretty fast but I still heard when someone mentioned where the iv equipment was and panicked a little because of that. I remember feeling them take my hand for that but never actually felt anything happen. Just some fear but the gas was v helpful obvi. Someone said they would see me in a little bit, and then I was groggily waking up in recovery.
Recovery was a little rough bc the iv was still there (fully wrapped up so I couldn’t see it though which was rad) but I was still really anxious about it until it was taken out and when it was taken out. For anyone that struggles w this i did not feel them remove it, just the tape. Everything was mentally much easier after that. After a while, going over instructions w parents, a cracker , some ginger ale and some juice, my dad helped me Get dressed and I was helped out to the car in a wheel chair. Ride was smooth bc of remaining numbness and meds except a few Bumps in the road
TOP SURGERY GOTTEN
My post op date was scheduled for Jan 17th and that’s the day I got my drains out followed by several post op check-ins. First week of recovery was miserable but things exponentially approved each day past that, and I went back to school in person two weeks post-op with driving and item-carrying assistance from friends!

Just want to preface this that I am aware practically none of what I'm about to come up with is cannon. This is all just my personal headcannon.
So I believe that Alex Wesker was contacted by Carlsa Rademes long before the events of ReR2. Carla wished to create a clone of Albert Wesker in order to enhance the C-Virus, as she needed a much larger sample size than just one blood vial. So, she contacted Alex (who was head of the Wesker Project during the days of Umbrella, and would most likely have access to a sample of Wesker's blood) and offered to fund her t-Phobos Virus research and experimentation if Alex assisted in the cloning process.
Alex would accept the offer and have her and her team relocated to The Family's research lab for some time. The first attempt at cloning Wesker using the C-Virus would end in faluliure, with the clone emerging deformed and brutish. However, this clone would be repulsed in Carla's loyal servant, being known as Ustanak.
The second attempt would end up being a success, with a young clone of perfectly normal appearance being created. With her end of the deal over, Alex and her team would relocate to the island where ReR2 takes place and begin their t-Phobos research. However, a female researcher would become attached to the young clone, stealing him and fleeing The Family. She would end up hiding in Edonia, where she would raise the clone, named Jake Mueller, as her own son.
Anyways, just wanted to post this and see what people thought of this. It's just a neat way of connecting Re6 and ReR2 together, as well as giving a better backstory to Jake and Ustanak.

Does this type of thing happen often, where children contact the local law agencies for help with proving the existence of the Easter Bunny, Santa Claus, the Tooth Fairy....or I suppose, to charge the Tooth Fairy with theft for stealing teeth?

I book a excursion on a boat with drinks and snacks, I few minutes before midnight they sail out in to the harbor. The fireworks display was truly AMAZING, they were going off in sync 360 degrees all around the boat.

Buko Intense = a straight dupe of Virgin Island Water. Opens with piercing lime for the first minute or so. Dries down in the opening and mid to a sugary coconut and lime. So, VIW.
Buko = Montagne's spin on Virigin Island Water. WAY less lime here. It opens with very creamy, sugary coconut. There is almost a sunscreen vibe to it. The drydown is slightly more white floral than Buko Intense. So it's ultimately a salty, sugary coconut and white floral that smells adjacent to VIW. The lime is there but almost indiscernible.
Conclusion: If you are looking for a dupe of VIW, Buko Intense is the one you want. If you want a less citrusy spin on VIW, and something a little more unique, go with Buko. When in doubt, buy samples/decants.

I'll try to structure this as best as possible, since there are a lot of small elements interconnected.
First of all, if you haven't watched KoL's video you are gonna think I'm completely crazy. Also, this theory would be a spoiler of that theory itself, which would be a shame because that video blew my mind.

I was a kid when the original X-Men: The Animated Series debuted, and it quickly became my favorite cartoon of all time. When I learned they were making a reboot of the cartoon, no one wanted this show to be good more than me; and leading up to the debut, I was cautiously optimistic. But when the show finally debuted, I found myself underwhelmed. I wanted to love this show like I loved the original show, but unfortunately I've only been able to like it, at most. With each passing episode, I could only manage a lukewarm satisfaction with this show, but I couldn't quite put my finger on what the reason was. Why didn't I like this show more? There doesn't seem to be anything glaringly wrong with it, so why don't I love it? Recently, now that the I've seen the penultimate episode of the season, I think I've figured it out. The fact is, there is no one reason I don't like this show; while the show does a number of things well, it also has a bunch of little problems that just accumulate and dilute the good things in the show. So I've come to the conclusion that even though this show is superficially the continuation of the legendary X-Men: TAS (including story continuity, voice actors, intro sequence, and theme music), this show just doesn’t hold a candle to the original. The following is a bit of a rant where I list the things that have bugged me about this show and make it significantly inferior to the original.

• Everything so far has been going along one narrative path, and all other narrative paths are sacrificed or rushed as a result. It’s all been leading up to this whole Bastion thing involving sentinels, prime sentinels, Trask, Gyrich, and Mr. Sinister. The Madeline Pryor story was rushed and shortchanged, the Lifedeath storyline was rushed and shortchanged. The romance between Storm and Forge was rushed and very unsatisfying. The romance between Jubilee and Sunspot was rushed and unsatisfying. The love triangle involving Cyclops, Jean, and Madeline was rushed and unsatisfying. And then the romance didn’t even matter because Madeline just died right after. And for what? The rushing-through of all these subplots and character relationships might be worthwhile if the ultimate story being told is compelling enough to justify it. We've seen the death of Gambit, Madeline Pryor, the Morlocks, the Hellfire Club -- all these characters and teams have been sacrificed in service of a rather dull main plot involving prime sentinels and a villain named Bastion who they didn’t even introduce into the show until episode 8. It just feels like a lot of potential for great character developments and stories has been wasted in service to a lame main plot thread, and a villain who will inevitably not be properly fleshed-out because he was introduced at the last minute.
• Speaking of sentinels, the overarching story of the entire season revolves around sentinels. Every enemy the X-Men have fought so far are sentinels or someone related to sentinels. In the first episode, they fight humans who are using sentinel technology. Then the team fights a bunch of ordinary sentinels. Then they fight more humans with sentinel technology. Then they fight a giant mega-sentinel that destroys Genosha. Then they fight prime sentinels, who are a human/sentinel mixture. Then they fight Bastion himself, who is the incarnation of Nimrod, who is a powerful futuristic sentinel. Everything revolves around sentinels. The only enemy the X-Men fight are sentinels or sentinel-related personnel. This is ridiculous. Anyone familiar with the X-Men should know that they have one of the best rogues galleries of any superhero property; there’s a wide variety of great villains the team could go toe to toe against. But no, just sentinels. Always sentinels.
• They fixed the mistake by the Fox-Men movies of having everything revolve around Wolverine, with Cyclops being shortchanged; except now they made a new mistake of having everything revolve around Cyclops and Jean instead, with most other characters being shortchanged. And ironically, I feel as though Wolverine is now being underused and given too little to do. There is a reason why he is so popular; he is undeniably an interesting character. It feels like this show has overcompensated for Fox-Men's infatuation with the character.
• The romance between Gambit and Rogue is not fleshed out. They depend on the audience's previous knowledge of and investment in the characters’ romance from the original show, without actually displaying that romance in the show.
• Sunspot is wasted. He shows up at the beginning of the season, and does practically nothing throughout the season, and then nearly at the end of the season inexplicably betrays the X-Men. He takes sides with a known terrorist against the people who saved him from mutant-hating extremists and took him in as family. But ultimately, his betrayal is as meaningless as his very inclusion in the show in the first place.
• Professor X looks like an idiot for trusting the team’s longtime archnemesis with becoming the leader of the team. And then, inevitably, Magneto betrays the team, confirming the suspicions and concerns of the entire team, and the audience.
• Morph is terribly used in the show. He shouldn’t have even been in the show considering he is not even a real X-Men character; he was written for the original X-Men show basically just to be killed off. It makes no sense to not only bring him back, but make him a regular team member. And he is too powerful, apparently being able to mimic not only the appearance of various characters but even their amazing powers, such as Quicksilver’s speed and the Hulk’s strength. It feels very cheap. Having clear definitions and limits to a character's abilities is important to good storytelling; and so it feels like lazy storytelling to have a character who can just turn into any powerful character during a fight, in order to do whatever the plot needs for him to do. In the original X-Men show, Morph seemed to have more well-defined limits to his powers, and he tended to use his powers more for deception and infiltration rather than combat. When he did fight, his physical abilities while shapeshifting were usually not much more beyond his normal physical abilities. Furthermore, Morph's presence on the show is a cheap way of having unsatisfying cameos by various famous characters rather than actually writing a story that involves those characters.
• Speaking of cameos, they have a cameo by Captain America that is completely pointless. I was looking forward to seeing a fight between Cap and Rogue -- as that is a superhero matchup I had never considered before, and I was eager to see how it played out -- but nothing happens; they just talk for a while and then part ways. The original show had an episode called "Old Soldiers" that featured Captain America, and utilized him much better. Also, it was incredibly dumb how Cap makes his dramatic entrance by throwing his shield at Rogue and having it lodge into the ground at Rogue's feet. Cap's shield is only useful as a weapon when he throws it, it hits its target, and then it returns to him. There is no point in him throwing the shield as a "warning shot", only for the enemy to simply pick it up and take it. Considering how powerful Rogue is, it was incredibly stupid of Cap to literally throw away not only his only weapon against her, but his only defense.
• The original X-Men show did a great job of gradually and satisfyingly unfolding the X-Men universe to the audience. The show had a central lineup of characters in the X-Men team which remained constant throughout the entire show. And through this stable lineup of main characters, we get a gradual sampling of the X-Men universe. We see the team go through a variety of different stories, fight a variety of different villains and enemy teams, and see a variety of different environments and worlds. And despite the unchanging central team lineup, we see still get a variety of different guest appearances by other X-Men characters: Iceman, Angel, Colossus, Psylocke, Nightcrawler, Dazzler, Havok, Banshee, Polaris, and so on. But by comparison, this show is much messier and less satisfying. The character lineup is inconstant, with characters joining the team at odd times throughout the season, and then abruptly leaving, or quitting, or dying. Instead of seeing different interesting stories play out, we just have to follow this one main story thread about sentinels, with all other plot threads being shortchanged as a result. Instead of seeing a variety of different environments, we only see environments that are directly related to the main sentinel plot thread. The X-Men keep fighting sentinels and sentinel-related enemies, instead of fighting more interesting enemies like the Brotherhood of Mutants, the Hellfire Club, the Morlocks, the Nasty Boys, the Starjammers, Alpha Flight, X-Factor, the Shi'ar, etc. This show feels boring because it is moving at a sluggish pace through a storyline that is not all that interesting, while at the same time displaying so little of what the X-Men universe has to offer.
• Genosha was wasted. The story should have allowed the Genosha storyline to breathe, letting the mutant haven exist for at least a few episodes, allowing us to see normal, everyday life play out on the island. But instead we get only a glimpse of what life on Genosha could have been like until it is abruptly disrupted by a big, stupid Kaiju-sentinel. Allowing Genosha to exist longer could have made its ultimate destruction so much more emotional and meaningful. But instead it just feels like a cheap way to move the main plot forward.
• Episode 4 was just a steaming pile of dog dirt. It's not even worth discussing. It immediately made me angry at this show.
• The original show had an episodic story structure. Each episode was its own self-contained story; and except for a few multi-part episodes, the events of one episode usually didn’t affect the following episodes. Thus, each episode typically told a full story and then came to a satisfying conclusion at the end. This show opts to have a more serial story structure. Now, I don’t have any problem with this change from episodic to serial, if it can be done right. But it is not being written well. The serial structure and the episodic structure don’t have to be mutually exclusive: there is no reason why a serial show cannot feature episodes which have a complete and satisfying plot that comes to a satisfying conclusion, while still carrying the overarching plot through to the next episode. But with this show, every episode just has too many loose ends untied, too many questions unanswered, too many events that are set up and not resolved. It feels like the writers have abandoned the idea of ending each episode with a satisfying resolution, and instead replaced it with some kind of cliffhanger making you eager to see how the story concludes next episode, but without making complete sense out of the events that have just happened.
• Where'd Bishop go? He was there at the beginning of the season, being an established member of the team without any explanation for why this was this case, as he had only had a few temporary run-ins with the X-Men in the original show. And then he takes baby Cable into the future to cure his illness, and then we haven't seen him since.
• Why the costume changes? In the original show, everyone just had one costume throughout the whole series, and it was fine. In this new show, people keep changing their costumes inexplicably. Storm reverts to her black 70's-style costume for no apparent reason, then the rest of the team reverts to their 70's X-Men costume for no apparent reason. Jubilee changes to some newer costume design from the comics. Sunspot puts on an X-Men costume, only to immediately abandon the X-Men and betray them for Magneto. (Why put on an X-Men costume just to immediately betray the X-Men afterwards?) The costume changes are bizarrely arbitrary, and just seem like more cheap nostalgia-bait, just like the Morph character-cameos.
• I don't like the animation style in this show. I am one of the few people who actually liked the animation style of the original X-Men show; I appreciated the irregular, inconsistent, hand-drawn-ness of it. It made the show feel organic and real. But something about the animation in this new show bugs me. It's too clean and perfect. It lacks personality. There is no style to the artwork of the show; it is just boring, perfectly-realistic human figures. It looks like something created by a computer; which it is, because it is cel-shaded animation. Cel-shaded animation can be good, though -- as the Spider-verse movies have demonstrated. However, part of the merit of the Spider-verse movies is their deliberate imperfectness, non-photorealistic art style, and elaborate texturing. But the cel-shaded animation is just uncomfortably perfect and clean and textureless. It's just boring to look at. All things considered, I'd still rather have the animation in this show than the animation style used throughout the majority of season 5 of the original X-Men show, which was horrible. But this show's animation still is nowhere near as pleasing to my eyes as the best animation appearing in the original X-Men show. This show's animation reminds of the awful cel-shaded animation in the "Chip 'n Dale" movie on Disney Plus, which also unsuccessfully attempted to trick the audience into thinking that it featured hand-drawn animation.
• Another thing that bugs me about this show is the actions scenes. The thing I probably loved most about the original X-Men show was its action scenes. They were thrilling, edge-of-your-seat, masterfully-directed action scenes. Despite being in a cartoon, the action scenes looked like something worthy of a big-screen action movie. They were energetic, yet intelligible. There could be many characters fighting simultaneously, with a lot going on at the same time, but yet I was never lost or confused as to what was going on. People and objects had weight to them, and would move with a realistic and distinctly non-cartoonish sense of physics. But this is not the case with this new show. Ironically, even though the animation is purportedly "improved", the motion feels wrong. The frame rate feels too choppy, even though the animation is based on computer-generated models, rather than being drawn frame by frame. So it seems like, if anything, the motion should be smoother than the original show. And the action scenes are the antithesis of the ones in the original X-Men show: they are frenetic, chaotic, and difficult to follow; people move in unrealistic and cartoonish ways; the X-Men often use their powers in relatively overblown and overly-dramatic ways instead of simple and direct; there have been very few if any direct mutant-on-mutant fights, with most of the fights being against boring sentinel-related characters. Action scenes tend to play out by focusing on only one character matchup at a time, with one X-Men character always being knocked out or incapacitated before moving on to another character's fight; this is in stark contrast to the original show, which excelled at staging intricate battles involving multiple X-Men characters fighting simultaneously, with each X-Men character being pitted against another evenly-matched character from the enemy team. It is clear that the director of this new show is simply not good at directing animated action scenes. The action scenes, while the highlight of the original show, are probably the low point of this new show.

To be fair, this show is probably one of the better X-Men productions we've had since X-Men TAS. It's more faithful to the comics than Fox-Men ever was. And so far it seems to be a better X-Men cartoon than the likes of "X-Men: Evolution" or "Wolverine and the X-Men". But as I said before, it really doesn't do justice to the original show, in my opinion. And furthermore, I dare say that it's really not a very well-written or well-crafted show in its own right. The writing, the directing, and the visuals are just poor. Everything about this show looks good at first glance, but when you look deeper, it's just empty. That's my rant. What do you think?

He made his way to the employee only area getting dna sample, eye scan and his prostetic scan entering through a pair of doors that led to the employees sections each he moved to a secret area touching a wall twisting his mana opening up a dimensionally shrunken tunnel to allow himself in checking on vermensk operations weapons research, developments with the warpfire dragons and biofoundry facility creating new life to cater to the resort as there's plenty of after dark activities one can enjoy aside from booze and drugs in the vip areas. One could regains ones youth here as well.
Gress traveled further into the nest warrens and subnautical facilities checking on the leviathan and defensive mines and subs in the onyx waters.
