Looking for advice on how to get a job

2024.05.14 18:28 Disastrous-Fox-2398 Looking for advice on how to get a job

Hi! First of all, sorry for my awkward English - not a native speaker. Also I tried to make it short, but maybe warning for a (slight) wall of text?
I’m taking a gap year from university to find a job due to family’s financial issues. Long story short, my parents made some bad business decisions and got scammed, which left us with an enormous amount of debt. I don't blame them one bit - we weren't exactly doing well before either, and I guess the insecurity sort of pushed them into taking unnecessary risks so that they could provide for us. Plus, I'm an adult now, and it should've been me taking care of them instead of the opposite.
The issue here is that, well, I’m sort of a loser. I’ve been searching and applying for jobs almost every day by now, but with little to no success. I could think of a few reasons why:
  1. I’ve never worked a day in my life. It’s normal for where we live, but I understand it’s no excuse in this day and age. Now my CV is completely blank save for a few odd jobs I did here and there, and they don’t look very impressive on paper.
  2. With the rise of AI and overall increase in literacy rate, my major (English) is oversaturated in the job market where I live. It didn’t help that I specialized in something rather useless unless you intend to go into academia (which was my intention before all this).
  3. My biggest weakness so far: I have abysmal communication skills. I’ve been aware of this since I was 5, and been trying to improve ever since; but there's just always something others get that I don't, be it social cues or how to get my thoughts across clearly. It's part of the reason my parents never made me work - they just assumed, between this and my gift for studying, that the only viable pathway for me was to get as high a degree as possible and become a scholaresearcher etc. (old people's logic, but I'm ashamed to say I did believe in it, too). I did manage to score some interviews before, for jobs and scholarships, but I always failed at the talking part. I’ve taken to applying primarily to online jobs, but they get claimed fast, and hard to make good money if you aren't a highly desired professional.
  4. Yes, I've tried construction/manual labor work. If the above description didn't make me look enough like a nerd before, I also have hereditary heart problems and seasonal allergy that was made worse by COVID-19. Plus, they don’t normally hire women where I live.
I'm just at a loss of what to do. I will continue to apply for jobs, of course, but the payments and bills and rent are eating up what little savings we have left - if I couldn't find a job by the end of this month, we might be homeless. I just feel so guilty because my parents put a lot of trust in me - I have always been their pride and joy, and now I can't even provide for them. My little brother is starting college this year, too. I don’t have enough time to learn a new employable skill (though I’ve been doing some free web design courses - they’re actually the most fun I’ve had these days), I don’t have money to start a business, and the banks won’t let us take out loans anymore - not even under my clean name, they screen backgrounds a lot more carefully since our economy’s in shambles and everyone's in need of help.
In short, I’m looking for advice on how to improve my employability, or some other ways to secure enough money, at least ~$400/month (converted rate) just to stay on top of our payments. Thanks for reading all this, I hope you have a great day.

2024.05.14 18:27 Glass_Hxarts *SPOILERS* The family tree is killing me

Alright look, I’ve been a massive fan of all Sarah J Maas works since Throne of Glass came out and have read them as they were published. I’ve read all of her series an unhealthy amount of times, after finishing the CC3 book, I’m a little befuddled. Maas has to be some different type of mastermind to have Rhysand and Bryce be distant relatives and then ALSO have Aelin Galathynius and Rowan Whitethorn and Dorian Havillard of ToG distantly related to Lidia Cervos and her children in CC3. Like. I needed a second to process as we all know that ToG and ACOTAR take place in the same timeline but different worlds, so it was safe to assume CC3 was the same way but there were always holes in that theory. CC3 is where the two previous Maas series come together, it’s like her massive ending to the entire universe of sorts. So the Crescent City series is clearly in the future based on the clear signs of cellphones and cars and the jobs (first hole in the theory that it was in the same timeline as ACOTAR and ToG). But now we know that it’s where the relatives of Aelin/Rowan/Dorian and Rhys work together to - lack for a better word - save the world. I’m not sure why this is so baffling to me that Maas did this, I’m still trying to wrap my head around it really. Some of the other theories on this platform make more sense now that I have this mind boggling information sitting rent free in my head but also poke holes in other theories. I have a feeling this is not the end to Maas’s planning as we have another ACOTAR book in the works, I feel like I need a whiteboard to keep up

2024.05.14 18:24 metalliccoating McGill vs Toronto

So incredibly grateful to have received both these offers in my fourth cycle. For those of you who are still waiting/applying again, don’t give up! If any current med students have any insights into what they like/dislike about these schools, or if anyone has been in the same position, how did you choose? for residency, I’d like to be in either Montreal, Toronto or Vancouver. I’m heavily leaning towards McGill but my fluency in French concerns me for future opportunities. Here’s my current list:
MCGILL Pros: - way cheaper (6-7K per year tuition, I’d probably save like 100k across 4 years including housing costs) - already live in the city (no moving) - best friends and partner live here - I like the way they structure their curriculum
Cons: - french (not completely fluent, currently at a B2/C1 level) —> any McGill students know if this will be a detriment? or if it’s possible to get to a C2 level in two years? - McGill has problems with the Quebec government, what does that mean for the school in the future? Idk
TORONTO (mississauga campus): Pros: - family lives in GTA - no French (maybe a con?) - prestige I guess (but I know that barely means anything) - smaller class sizes - more research opportunities? (unsure)
Cons: - way more expensive - have to move - long distance with partneneeds to get job in Toronto - I’ve heard it’s way more cutthroat than other schools

2024.05.14 18:21 PessimistYanker792 If you had £2500 as your net income pm, in London, what would be your ideal range of rent?

This is just a simple query, I want to live in London, and want to save some bucks yet live in the periphery of the city and soak in its charm on weekends. And on weekdays, travel a couple (2/3) days to office and some (rest) days work from home.. What would your ideal budget in a single shared space be? Is £800-900pm excluding bills on higher side or is it nominal?
I am visiting spareroom.com, zoopla.co.uk and cityrooms.com for viewing single rooms in shared houses/flats.

2024.05.14 18:19 Few_Log8273 How can I get my money back?

I’m hoping I can find some help here. The story goes back to 2016. I dated a guy whom i had family and friends connections with, so he was not a total stranger when I met him. We dated for about a year and a half. He seemed to have a good job, he had a house, he told me he was divorced, and he had a daughter, which I knew was true. He met my family and everything seemed normal. Then he said he lost his job and he was suing the company for discrimination. The money was getting tight and he wanted to start a business (I know!!). He asked me for a loan and I gave him the money. It was a wire transfer. It was supposed to be paid once he won the law suit against his former employer, or once he got paid by his brother who owed him money. I did believe him because I was invested in the relationship. A few months back I really needed my money back (which he knew I have been saving that money for something very specific). He started ignoring be, telling lies about how he was struggling, avoiding my calls and texts, etc.. I got suspicious and I did a background check on him.. turns out he was still married. I confronted him and he became verbally hostile. Obviously we broke up and every er time I asked about my money he kept saying he will pay me, and sometimes says go to court or do whatever you want to do. I know he ended up winning the law suit against his former employer. I moved on and got busy with life but I still wish there was a way to get my money back. The only proof I have is the bank record for the wire transfer, and text messages from him saying he will pay and then threatening me that he will ruin me if kept chasing him. Sorry it’s a long text, but I’m hoping someone can advise me on how to tackle this. It’s a lot of money and I’ll be happy to collect anything at all.

2024.05.14 18:13 bhouse114 CMV: The difference in rate of depreciation between new and used cars does not matter .

A bit about myself, I work in corporate finance, have an undergraduate degree in finance + economics, and have generally have been interested in personal finance since I was a kid.
One thing that is common advice that never squared with me is that buying new cars are a waste or are economically imprudent because of the fast pace of depreciation, especially soon after the car is purchased and it isn’t “new” anymore.
To be clear, I’m not arguing that new cars depreciate quickly, and I’m not arguing whether the premium for new cars are generally worth it compared to used cars. I’m arguing that the depreciation doesn’t matter.
The reason that a car’s depreciation doesn’t matter is because a car is not an investment, it is a consumable. A car, especially the way that they are typically financed, is analogous to a subscription to use the vehicle. A subscription to an unused vehicle will be worth more than a subscription to a vehicle that has been used and has unknowns. A subscription is a good analogy because even if you buy a car with cash, insurance, gas, etc are recurring expenses.
That said, the rate of depreciation of a car does not affect anyone’s quality of life or access to other financing. Car values are not considered in credit scores, mortgage applications, business loan applications, whether someone is an accredited investor, etc.
I think that the fixation of a car depreciating comes from the conflation of what is an asset and what is a consumable. Nothing about a car is an investment except the investment of your ability to move about the city and the reliability of it. Of course, it’d be nice to say “ I bought this car yesterday for $30k and it’s worth $30k” as opposed to “I bought this car yesterday for $30k and it’s worth $22k”. But again, you can’t use that $22k. I’ve never even seen people include their car values in their net worth. (As they shouldn’t.)
The only instance where I can see the depreciation being meaningful is if the owner of the car wanted or needed to sell or trade in the car very soon (<3 years).
But this is what gap insurance is for and not what I hear people argue.
To change my view, someone would need to demonstrate that owning a car worth more than another car has value outside of the utility/experience of the car. Because as mentioned earlier, presumably the higher purchase price encapsulates the newer model, and expected higher reliability of a brand new car.

2024.05.14 18:09 crystal_help_please Those who didn’t work during rad tech school, how did you make it work?

Hi!
I’m completing my prereqs currently for rad tech school and I was wondering for those in or already finished school who did work how did you pay for living expenses?
I live in California and I’m on the waitlist at a community college, which if I go to a CC my tuition and classes will be covered under the California college promise program.
In the meantime while I’m on the waitlist I plan to work full time and save money, but I’m considering once I get in if I still want to be a rad tech, for those who didn’t work did you take out loans to commit full time to your studies? How did it work out for you?
Thank you for anyone who reads this and responds. Sorry for any grammar mistakes!!!

2024.05.14 18:06 psilon2020 Variable System from Goodman, debating this or go with something more tested.

Hi all, this quality local business sent me this quote and wondering if I should go with a variable system or not. The installer is reputable, BBB accredited with no complaints or bad reviews and 17 years in the business, 4.5 stars on google (over500 reviews.)
I am all about helping the small business but still worried this Goodman isn't that good because everyone seems to love Lennox or Carrier. This system is replacing my 2nd story Carrier 2.5 15.0 SEER (I believe the old classification of SEER) system which has a leaking coil and is prematurely freezing at the TxV. Anyway give me your thoughts.
Also should I save any parts off the not optimal running Carrier unit for my Carrier unit downstairs that has 6 years on it...? Just wondering if something if anything of the other unit would be salveable as parts for the other one....

2024.05.14 18:01 Mazgrid Buying used car while in 7mo long tech school?

Title says it, but before you all say anything, YES i know its generally discouraged to buy a car during tech for multiple reasons.
I am married, and will be SEPRAT during my 6-7 month tech school here at Keesler AFB. I never planned on buyjng a car as i didnt see a need but as i thought about how difficult it would be to manage one vehicle between 2 jobs... it doesnt seem practical. Ive thought of alternatives to sharing a car between my wife and i who will be living off base, but it doesnt add up all the way.
Generally i know not to pay cash down, or take huge loans. Im not buying a new car that has a MSRP of $40,000 with 17% APR or anything. I found a decent mid 2010's used vehicle for under $9k. If l do proceed in buying this used vehicle, probably take a vehicle loan to build credit, and use a portion of the money i have saved (roughly $11k) for payments and what not. Theres more to it, but i wont post a massive yap-fest on here. Point is: my wife and i likely wont be able to share a vehicle to make it practical to both work our jobs and have a flexible schedule.
Any advise or additional ckmments that are helpful are greatly appreciated. Trying to make the most efficient and practical decisions while starting my new life in the AF. Thanks all 🫶

2024.05.14 18:00 InternationalKale368 Do South Indians really hate North Indians?

Like I am from lucknow, despite having BJP in power this city has never seen communal violence unlike many other cities in up and idc for hindu muslim I despise both Hindutva and Islamists but my question is do South Indians really hate North Indians or it's just political discourse? Like hatred from both sides is really useless and only causes division of country and is harmful for it. I would also like to know do South people really think congress/DMK/Communist party is a better alternative than BJP ( I think it's just the hatred for BJP to think congress Or communism is better) for me both BJP and congress are two sides of the same coin causing division to gain votes (like congress isn't any better either). But I really want to know is the hatred real of just social media thing? Like I get that you all wanna protect your culture and it's good too and the native languages of our diverse country should be saved but instead of hating people for not learning the languages can't it be just to each their own? Like we all speak English so it can be a common link between us whilst preserving our own regional languages but do we really need to fight over it and cause property destruction? I get that both North and South have faults that should be worked upon but is it really worth causing the division of our country?

2024.05.14 18:00 DanzerMacTire Found out my pup needs knee surgery, are there any sources to help low income?

So I ended up getting my new pup last year in the summer, so she's not even a year old yet. I had been taking her to the vet for her normal checkups and trying to keep her healthy. When she was about 5-6 months, I started to notice she was limping on her back legs a lot more often and come to find out she had shallow knee pockets in both back legs. After some recent x-rays, I also found out she has hip problems, sadly it's too late to get that fixed with surgery since she's 11 months now. I can still get her knee surgery to help with her legs but it'll be about $8k. I work 40+ hours but am only barely able to cover my current bills and living situation. Insurance won't help cover it since it's pre-existing and joint issues, and I don't have the credit to get a big enough loan to help cover the bill. Does anyone know any low-income sources that might be able to help? I am currently figuring to just save up for the bill but I know it will be years before I'd have enough to try and cover it, and I would like to try and get her in a soon as possible to prevent unneeded pain for her.

2024.05.14 17:55 BustDown041 Need 3K for medical bills

As the title states I need 3K to cover the cost of medical bills and I need it within a week. I do not have 3K to cover my costs. I do however have a vehicle with some equity on it. I owe about 6K left on a car note and the vehicle is worth about 15K according to KBB.
So my question is would I even qualify for a collateral loan? I have about a 500 credit score and no real savings other than a 401K that I won’t be touching. What are my chances of getting a collateral loan with such a low credit score? It would only be about 3K. Would it be worth it to apply for the loan or should I save myself the embarrassment of applying because no way they’d loan me the money.
Any input is greatly appreciated!

I make about 80k a year, invest up to the employers match in the 401k, max out my Roth IRA and HSA. The interest rate on my mortgage is 6.375% which considering everything isn’t terrible. Does it make sense to continue paying down my mortgage or should I throw that in investments or savings??? I live in a MCOL area, my only other debt than the mortgage is about 10,000 is student loans at about 4% (and my employer puts 100$ a month towards that).

2024.05.14 17:53 Majestic-Book9294 Should I invest my student loan grants to let it grow?

For context I’m in my first year of college and still have 3 more years to go (plus 2 more since I plan on taking my CPA). I just keep the grants I receive in my savings account since I plan on using that as extra money when I have to pay back the loan.
However, I feel the need to invest that money for it to grow.
Should I invest it? If so, what do I invest in and where do I start? Or should I just keep it in my savings account?
Could really use some help, thank you!!

2024.05.14 17:52 dangman90 Is it a smart move for me to buy a car right now?

Gross yearly income is 82k
I net 2500 biweekly $6000 in savings (I know this is low) $60k student loan debt
I really want to buy a new car as I’m a single mom and need more space to carry my daughters things. I plan to keep my car I’m driving right now as my every day/work car (I drive 60-100 miles daily) and use the potential new one as a weekendetrip car. It’s paid off.
My current fixed expenses are $3000 per month.
I’m anticipating my new, potential, car payment to be around $500 with a $100 monthly insurance payment.
With that, I’d have about $1200-1300 left over each month to save or spend.
I’m nervous to add this car payment in right now just because I’ve gotten used to having little to no car payment.
What would you all do?? Would I still be comfortable with a new car payment or should I hold off?? Let me know if more info is needed!

Super Mario 64’s ‘Unopenable Door’ Has Finally Been Opened
A Super Mario 64 fan has found a way to open the one-way cabin door in the Cool, Cool Mountain without any mods or hacks. As Super Mario 64 nears its 30th anniversary, gamers worldwide continue to explore its secrets and discover new exploits in the game's enduring code. And one fan seems to be making impressive progress in that area.
Super Mario 64's secret Stars and hidden doors are well known to veteran players. After all, this Nintendo classic has been full of Easter Eggs since its launch. Interestingly, doors have often been the key to finding many of these out-of-sight features. However, one particular door has puzzled fans since 1996 because it seemed impossible to open. In the Snow World region, near the Mother Penguin's home, there is a wooden cabin that links the slide area to the mountain. The problem with this door is that it has a doorknob only on the inside and cannot be opened from the outside. At least, that’s what gamers believed to be the case for the past 29 years.
YouTuber Pannenkoek2012 released a video showing how to open the previously unopenable door in the Cool, Cool Mountain without any Super Mario 64 ROM modifications. They explained how another player, who goes by Alexpalix1 on Discord, used the Mother Penguin exploit to start the process but added a crucial step: a timely turnaround. First, the player lures the Mother Penguin near the locked door by grabbing her baby. Then, they jump over her head, manipulating her hitbox to bypass the door’s invisible wall. Finally, before Mario hits the ground, they initiate a turnaround move, causing Mario to walk toward the door and open it.
Technically, this method works only because two movement codes overlap. When the player jumps over the Mother Penguin's head, the free-fall animation activates. However, doing the turnaround move causes a well-known SM64 glitch in the air that overwrites this with the walking animation's code, creating one frame of walking toward the door before landing. This happens because in Mario games, a turnaround move triggers an immediate walking animation, forcing the character to walk in the air.
What's Behind the Unopenable Door in Super Mario 64?
While this technique is impressive, fans should know it offers no real benefits besides personal amusement. Unlocking the cabin door from the other side doesn't save time or reveal any behind-the-scenes Super Mario 64 secrets. It's just a complicated way to access an already mandatory section of the game.

2024.05.14 17:49 CoffeeS3x Living far above my means for the next 12 months

Not really sure what I’m looking for by posting this, maybe just reassurance that my plan is sound and can work at the expense of accruing some interest on loans.
So I bought a condo pre-con in 2019 for $513k. 21% down. Have been paying the crazy high occupancy fees for the last few months but thankfully it is closing in June.
I am self employed as a general contractor and my income is very unpredictable, but basically am not making nearly as much in 2023 and 2024 as I did years prior. Combine this with the interest rates skyrocketing, and the bottom line is that I absolutely cannot afford the $400k~ mortgage on this place (plus condo fees, utilities, etc). I would sell today and be happy.
That’s the issue. Due to the new house flipping laws in Canada, I cannot qualify for principal residence exemption unless I own and live in it for 12 months from closing date.
The value of the condo is now more like $750k. That’s almost 250k in appreciation or “profit” that I would have to claim 100% as income as it would not even qualify as a capital gain, if I sell before June of 2025. We’re talking about well over $100k of taxes on the sale. For this reason, I feel like it’s worth it to just live above my means, take loans where I can (luckily I have parents that can help subsidize the mortgage, at a standard interest rate), and just accumulate debt until I can sell the condo and pay off all the loans.
I think it’s well worth accumulating $10k-20k of interest to hold this condo, in order to sell next year and save the tax. The math checks out for sure. It’s just incredibly stressful knowing I’m living way above my financial means, as this is never how I’ve lived and never how I want to live. Wouldn’t have saved up as much as I did to afford this condo in the first place if that’s how I was comfortable living. It’s really just a combination of bad financial environments that has screwed me a little here, but it is what it is.
I guess im just looking for a pat on the back and a “it’ll be ok!” here lol, but does anyone see any glaring problems with this plan? It sounds like by next summer (assuming little change in the real estate market) after selling and settling all debts and paying all costs, I’ll be sitting on nearly $300k and can plan my next move from there.
