2024.05.14 16:39 Status_Seaweed_1917 I Don't Think I Hate Subbing; I Hate Subbing at "Inner-City" Schools.

...When I sub in the suburbs, it's great. I never have behavioral issues, the kids actually care about their grades and will actually do their work. Today I'm subbing at an inner-city school (my old high school), and they have a severe security staff shortage and the kids know it, to the point where they intentionally break rules and then tell you that security isn't going to show up. And no one does.
Over the PA system they asked me to turn in attendance and to send a trusted student. It was taking me so long to do attendance because I had to keep adjusting it due to students giving their names then leaving without permission. I finally handed off the attendance sheet to a female student who I THOUGHT was taking it up to the attendance office. Five minutes later another student charges in with the same attendance sheet, demanding to be marked present, even though she showed up for attendance then vanished immediately after without permission. I called for security, who never came. I ultimately had to call the attendance office and report the names of the students who were actually present in the class and hadn't left (which was less than five).
One of the female students complained loudly about me doing it. I should've ignored her but I told her that legally there's reasons why we can't just let students wander off and not report it, etc. She got very belligerent and argumentative and told me that they hear this kind of thing every day from staff and they don't care. I patiently tried to explain why they should care, because it affects the quality/amount of education they get. She insisted they're getting a good education and good grades (which is a lie) and graduating and I told her they'd be learning even more if they would behave and teachers didn't have to stop to correct them, and then told her that in the suburban schools they're doing college-level coursework (which is true), then she told me again that she doesn't care, and that they don't care about subs, and they only care about their real teachers (which is a farce because a permanent teacher is in the room right now and told them to stay in the classroom and they ignored her and left again anyway).
I just realized that I actually don't hate subbing, I just really hate subbing in inner-city schools. Subbing in the suburbs pays way less, but I think over the summer I'm going to apply to more suburban districts and phase out subbing at these schools altogether. They don't have the security staff they need, the kids intentionally are on their worst behavior and go way out of their way to make the day harder than it has to be. The lunatics are running the asylum, and the few good kids who had the misfortune of ending up at these schools are getting lost in the shuffle.

2024.05.14 16:30 kingOfMars16 ‘No easy answers’: LDS parents wonder if early morning seminary is worth the risks to teens’ health

https://www.sltrib.com/religion/2024/05/14/no-easy-answers-lds-parents-wonder
Might be behind a paywall, I have JavaScript turned off on the page so I can read it anyway 😅 I'll put up some quotes and give a tl dr: basically tons of research shows that waking up early as a teen is extremely bad for your mental health, but the church doesn't care.
A mounting body of evidence indicates that teens not only need more sleep than adults but also that hormonal shifts make it harder for them to go to bed before 10 or 11p.m. At the same time, researchers have gained a clearer picture of the risks associated with teenage sleep deprivation, among them serious mental health issues and substance abuse.
Tired teens, recent studies have discovered, are more prone to major depression and risky behavior, including drug experimentation. One study, published in 2023, found that sleep-deprived adolescents were about twice as prone to suicide ideation and consideration, even when adjusting for sexual identity, trauma, bullying and other related factors. Another, published the year before, suggested a possible link between poor adolescent sleep and an increased risk of schizophrenia.
The church won't make any changes, and the parents and kids are brainwashed into thinking it's worth the "sacrifice". They have other options, like online or late night classes, but since they're not the norm kids and parents still feel the pressure to keep the status quo and do regular seminary. It's a classic "cultural" problem where the church refuses to acknowledge the influence it has on the problems it causes.
My two cents: I definitely don't have any lasting sleep disorders exacerbated by seminary /s 🙄 Jazz band at my high school was before school, my freshman year I just went to seminary instead, but then we tried having seminary just for a handful of band kids after school. For whatever reason by my junior year we switched to extra early seminary at 5:45am (I know a ton of people that had it that early as well in other districts and states). I slept through every class that wasn't active (like band or drafting) every single day of that year and the next. I even had to drop out of honors pre-calculus because I just couldn't stay awake.
The kids in most classes referred to me as "that sleeping kid". Though to be fair it was pretty funny when I got the second highest score on the practice AP physics test and the guy who sits next to me was like "what?? He's asleep ALL THE TIME" (I didn't do as well on the actual test though 😅).
And now in my thirties it's almost impossible to even get out of bed without Adderall or a large amount of caffeine, and it's impossible to get to sleep without Ambien or a large amount of weed (and yes, that includes days where I didn't take stimulants, and vice versa). This research on how much sleep teens actually need is almost a decade old, and some high schools have even pushed back their start times because of it (and consequently saw a noticeable bump in their test scores). And the church still won't address this issue that's actually harming kids. They either don't care about the kids outside of Utah or really appreciate how much easier brainwashing is when you're sleep deprived.

2024.05.14 16:25 Top-Ad-6088 Need Advice: Messed Up School Attendance Records, Now Facing a Fine or Legal Trouble

Hi everyone,
I'm in a bit of a situation and could really use some advice. My father is a high school government teacher and recently became the headmaster. The previous headmaster had some shady practices, and now my father is caught in the middle of it.
Here's the story: A student at the school was preparing for a competitive exam and rarely attended classes. Instead, he used the school as a dummy, paying extra money to the previous headmaster to mark him as present on the attendance register even when he was absent.
When my father took over as headmaster, he was unaware of this arrangement and continued to mark the student present, following the previous headmaster's orders.
Fast forward to now, the student passed the exam and needs a Transfer Certificate (TC) to move to a new school. My father initially refused to give the TC because the student was not a regular attendee. However, the student and his parents went to the district head office, and the authorities instructed my father to issue the TC, so he complied.
The problem arose when the district authority head reviewed the attendance records and discovered that the student was frequently marked present despite not attending school. Now, the authority head is demanding that my father pay a fine of 70,000 rupees or face legal action.
We're not sure what to do. Any advice on how to handle this situation would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

2024.05.14 16:24 Poopkin_Potato Other teachers/friends of teachers - When do interviews mostly take place?

Hello! Since I am moving to Dayton at the end of May, I have been looking for a job, preferably teaching as it is what I am most familiar with.
I have had one interview with DPS, and outside of that I have had no contact from any other district or school. I was wondering when interviews happen for the smaller districts outside of Dayton, if I had missed the mark, or if I still had time to wait around for a position before going into panic mode. I have taught for 5 years and have already completed my Ohio certification and background checks, so I am not sure what is up!
Thanks for any information!

2024.05.14 16:23 buttcup22 Multiple locations!

Hey there! I’m a lead teacher at a preschool run by the school district who is in the beginning stages of unionizing. I’ve found a union rep and a couple interested employees, but I’ve hit a snag and I’m not sure the best way to go about this. We are all spread out throughout the district and I am NEVER at the other locations organically. I only have contact information that the bosses have access to so sending some sort of email won’t work. I’m not sure how to have conversations with them to feel out whether they would be on board or not? A lot of them are older and have a sense of loyalty to our boss, so I am worried they will take a bit of convincing.
I would appreciate any advice!

2024.05.14 16:23 WatercressOk7011 IEP and IQ scores

Hey everyone, I’m looking for advice on what I can do to help my daughter. Just for reference we live in Missouri and she is currently in 3rd grade. Long story short she has always been different from my older kids and more challenging. We’ve been involved with first steps for speech/OT, she “failed” her kindergarten assessment, and she was selectively mute for all of kindergarten/early assessments. Covid started during her kindergarten year so they dropped the ball on what should have been her first IEP evaluation. She has been evaluated three times and denied an IEP three times since we finally were able to get an assessment in first grade. After our first iep assessment (first grade) was a huge fail we had a private evaluation at UMSL (second grade) and were able to get an ADHD diagnosis finally. They also re-tested her IQ and it came back at 79. The school district has tested her IQ twice and it’s also come back around 80. I have been told repeatedly she cannot have a learning disability because her IQ is low and she does not qualify for an iep because there isn’t a discrepancy with her academic scores. She is in a math “tutoring” program and a social/play therapy program the school has but that’s all they have for her. The reading program has been put off on the teachers due to “lack of resources”. Her teacher does what she can and my daughter is making improvements but it’s just not enough. She is still about a grade level behind and gets C/D grades. Her processing speed is so low and I just want her to have access to more help. We have an advocate that we are working with now but I just feel like there is more I could be doing instead of waiting.
We have tried tutoring multiple times and she refuses to participate in it. She’s been medicated for about a year now and has been retested since starting her medication. I’m just tired of the school telling me nothing is wrong and she’s going to be a low achieving student.
I do suspect she is possibly autistic, however, UMSL refused to fully evaluate her for ASD because unmedicated ADHD can present as autism when it isn’t. UMSL has since lost their funding to evaluate kids from our area. Additionally, my daughter does not fully participate in assessments, she won’t talk or engage beyond what is minimally required. She hates school and says she doesn’t want to work harder (outside of school hours) than she already is. I would love to send her to a private school for kids with difficulties like her but the one school we have that is close is 30 minutes away and her dad disagrees with sending her there.

2024.05.14 16:15 QCat18 Looking for Opinions on Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy

Like the title says, I'm looking for personal experiences on Holy Trinity. Did your kids attend/did you attend. What did you think of it. I'm particularly interested in how their curriculum and extracurriculars stack up against other school schools in the area from student/parent perspective, and how it prepares them for college and beyond.
I have poured over the info on their site, and I intend to visit their campus, but anyone can make anything look good for someone on the outside.
I would be looking at starting my daughter in Pre School in the next year or two, and ideally letting her stay in one school/district for the duration of K-12, which is why I'm looking at this as an option early. If we keep her in public school, she will most likely attend Viera Elementary/Middle/High School.
My older daughter will be going into her Sophomore year at Viera, and she has enjoyed it, and we've been pleased, but with our financial situation becoming more stable, I want to see if the private school route is better for our younger daughter. TYIA for any info and opinions!

2024.05.14 16:09 pcjackie What Would You Do?

Okay, I’ve been applying for Data Analyst positions since January of LAST year. And only had two job interviews last year. When my unemployment dried up I resorted to being a substitute teacher. My Bachelors is actually in Technology Education and I’m also able to teach Computer Education.
Anyway, I just got a call for an interview this morning as a Technology Specialist at a school district two hours south of me. This is the first employment phone call I’ve had in a long time. Plus I just renewed my lease. But I need a job, a real job. School is out June 12th and I have nothing planned work wise except there may be substitute assignments available over the summer.
I’m also 55 years old. I need a stable job that I can count on. Something that I can do for the next 20 years 🤞where I can build up a 401K. I have a small 401K savings right now. Not very much. I have, when I was 20, driven an hour and a half each way to work before but I was young back then. Plus I don’t know what the salary is but I think the cost of living is low in that area compared to where I am now.
The interview is schedule for Thursday morning at 10:40AM. I really need a job. I really need to move from the crime riddled neighborhood that I live in. I’m willing to get rid of most of my stuff too. Plus I have my two dogs and two kittens. They’re the best. But what would you do? Just go with it? 🤞That I get the job? I never imagined being without an IT job for so long! Oh and I got my first IT job over 33 1/2 years ago. But take time off for college but I do have three degrees and a minor. But yeah…

2024.05.14 15:50 newbieRedT Thoughts on Herricks school district?

Compared to Manhasset and Roslyn, Herricks is a tiny bit more affordable. What do you think about the school district and neighborhoods?
I've heard the school is ultra competitive like Great Neck (true?), which is a concern. I think our kids would get overwhelmed with a highly intense school like Great Neck, but we do want to offer them the best education/resources possible that we can.
We were thinking about the East Williston school district but there are no houses offered there. (thoughts on that school, neighborhood?)
Thank you

2024.05.14 15:49 Gallantpride Series that used to be popular in libraries but aren't nowadays?

A library near me that closed down six years ago had a huge collection of Chicken Soup For The Soul books. They must have had over thirty books in a section dedicated to the series.
Last week I suddenly remembered the series existed. I decided I wanted to read a bunch of the books I never did as a teen, so I looked them up in our district's app. It turns out very few are still in stock. There's only 1-3 copies of most books in the city and many are outright missing.
No one ever talks about Chicken Soup anymore despite seemingly everyone reading them in the 90s and 2000s. It just sorta died.
Over the years, I've seen a lot of kids books series become obsolete. Twenty years ago, every library had a huge stack of The Babysitters Club, Goosebumps, and Wayside School books. Now you're lucky if they carry the first ten Babysitters Club books. Even prior to that, I heard of books like Sweet Valley High and Alice which were huge sellers decades ago but now are obscure. Sweet Valley High was apparently a multimillion dollar book series with even merch and TV shows, but now not even nostalgic gen xers mention it.

2024.05.14 15:47 yikesokiedokie Likelihood of emergency waiver falling through?

I am licensed in History. I was recently hired for an ELA position at an inclusion school, so I am also required to have my SPED license. I actually did all of the work, minus the state test, for the SPED license the previous year, but since I didn't end up being hired with it, I didn't take the test and my license application is pending.
I passed the SPED state test and submitted the license paperwork for that license (now under review), and since I'm already licensed to teach one subject, I just have to pass the state test for ELA to get that license as well - so I should be fully licensed for the job in the next few weeks. However, since I didn't have these things by a certain cutoff date, I still have to be hired under an emergency waiver, which is currently being submitted by the district HR and will need to be approved by the state DOE.
Is there any reason that this waiver would fall through? I was trying not to tell my current admin I was leaving until I had a written offer, but contracts for next year at my current school are coming out so I may have to soon. I've been in regular contact with both the school that hired me and district HR, so I don't think they're going to pull anything.
I'm in MA if that's helpful!

2024.05.14 14:29 This_Lobster2244 AITA for encouraging my son to record his math teacher with the express purpose of getting him fired?

This could be a very long story but I’ll try to keep it short. My son has always hated school and he has clinical depression and ADHD so it makes it so much worse. We were between medical plans so for about 4 months I was unable to get him his medication.
For this first time ever last year he like math because his teacher did not require him to write out his work and gave him as many chances as he needed on his computer multiple choice tests. My son got an A+. I knew we were off to a bad start when we transferred into when I talked to the 7th grade math teacher to tell him what my son would require and he said that he was “more traditional” that my son’s old school. And all the progress was lost. When I tried to talk to the principle she said give it some time and that my son’s state test scores in math were in the bottom 5% so she was supporting this teachers approach. We were on our 6th school within the district so there was really nowhere else for us to go so I told my son that we would start looking for charter schools. Well none were available so we had to stick it out.
But then my son started saying this teacher was picking on him and that the teacher would scream racist obscenities at the minorities in class. I took this to the principle and she said she would look into it but she “warned” me to make sure I knew what I was saying because this teacher is “beloved” in the district and in 25 years has never had an accusation like this. She blew me off basically. Then one day last week this teacher screamed that my son was “r-word” and made him stand in front of the class with his pants pulled down and sucking his thumb. Of course I was livid but since I had been previously blown off I decided it was time to get the evidence for myself and told my son to record all the classes until the end of the year so maybe we could take it to a lawyer.
There is a lot of recording that we need to go through so I asked my sister I could send her some of the files to help. She blew up at me and said that “your mama bear act is fucking ridiculous, if the teacher really did that it would be on the national news.” I told her she didn’t know my son. She said, “yes because of your so-called parenting, we are scared to death of xxxxx.” I asked if she was serious and why is this the first I’m hearing of it. She said “the whole family has been telling you for years and you’re too big of an asshole to listen but you trying to get a man fired for xxxxxx’s obvious lie is maybe the biggest asshole thing you’ve done.”
AITAH?
