2024.05.12 22:10 Lobiankk Finished Fallout 2 for the first time... and I have mixed feelings. I can't say I prefer it over Fallout 1.

So this is a post I made in the Classic Fallout subreddit, but it was immediately removed by the moderators. I fail to see how it broke any of the subreddit's rules, since I've presented my points in a clear and respectful manner, so I'm posting it here. I reckon this community is probably more open for discussion than that one. Moderators, if you find any issues with the post, warn me so I can make proper adjustments, but please don't outright remove it.
EDIT: The mods of Classic Fallout said the original post was just caught in a filter, but I had just assumed it was manually removed. It's been approved. I apologize for the confusion. Either way, it's good to post it here too and see the opinions of each community.
So on September of last year I've finished Fallout 1 for the first time and posted a review here. I was absolutely amused by it. Absolute masterpiece.
After procrastinating for months, I finally decided to actually play Fallout 2 (with the Unofficial Patch installed), and finished it last week after 81.7 hours. This is gonna be my "review" of the game.
Things I liked
So, starting with the things I liked about the game: the UI is much improved over Fallout 1, being more intuitive. From the "take all" button, to not being able to loot corpses with no items, to having more digits on the barter menu, to not needing to click again on your destination after a random encounter in the world map, the game feels much better to play and has aged better as well. I'm still of the opinion that both games aged pretty well, considering they're from the 90s, but Fallout 2 certainly has the edge.
I really enjoyed how they improved companion interaction. From dialogue, to inventory management, as well as combat control, it's undeniable that companions are orders of magnitude superior in Fallout 2. Also, making the amount of companions you can have on your party be based on your Charisma really helps putting it to good use, as opposed to Fallout 1, where this stat was virtually useless.
Moreover, Fallout 2 has many more locations, factions, missions, weapon variety and overall content than Fallout 1. Which is great, since one of my few complaints with the first game is that it felt a bit short. Not only that, but there's generally more outcomes for quests and potential for roleplaying. Yall know much better than me about all the crazy stuff you can do in New Reno, for example.
Also, THE HIGHWAYMAN IS SO FREAKING AWESOME I LOVE IT.
Now, to the stuff I didn't like...
The early game just sucks
The Temple of Trials, as well as the first 2-3 hours of the game are really hard to bear. The game kinda forces you into a melee build, otherwise your chance to hit is gonna be too low, turning it into a very frustrating experience. It totally undermines your choices on character builds. Fallout 1, on the other hand, starts you with a knife and a Colt 6520, which encompasses both melee and ranged.
Not only that, but it feels like it's too long before you can get your hands on an actual firearm in this game, since you are broke at early levels and item prices are quite steep, and there doesn't seem to be many lootable guns available early on. I've tagged Melee Weapons, and despite not using them for 95% of the game, I don't regret this choice, because it made the early game much more enjoyable.
Honestly, the Temple of Trials should have been designed in a different way, with many more options on how to tackle it based on your character's abilities, or just outright removed, to be very honest. I've watched a video from Tim Cain where he said it was originally supposed to optional, as you'd be able to convince the other tribal to skip it. Too bad it wasn't the case.
The story is just not as interesting as Fallout 1's story
To be honest, I'm not a big fan of the concept of being a tribal, but I rolled with it. The thing is that overall the plot didn't have me as engaged as Fallout 1's. I did not care as much about Arroyo as I cared about Vault 13. I also didn't really feel like "The Chosen One".
Multiple times I felt dissatisfied with the dialogue options. They tended to be a little too "extreme" for my taste. You either have to act all sassy or like a very naive person, with not many options in between. I didn't have this problem with Fallout 1, as there were always very honest, straight-forward, level headed dialogue options available. I had an 8 Intelligence in Fallout 2, just like in Fallout 1, but the first game conveyed much better the idea of my character being smart in dialogue.
The world seems a bit disjointed, and not as cohesive as Fallout 1's world. It's very hit or miss, really. In one hand, there are very interesting locations, such as Vault City and New Reno, but other locations honestly feel weird and out place, such as San Francisco, with the Shi Vs. The Hubologists. Not only that, but it seems that the more south you go, the more "incomplete" the game feels. The NCR feels specially underdeveloped: I did two missions for Tandy, prevented a guy from blowing himself up on the power generator and freed the slaves to join the NCR, but even months after joining them. there were no missions for me, as Elise would say something like "Well, there's nothing for you to do, as I'm just reporting to the NCR that you are now a member". I assume that's a byproduct of cut content, as I heard apparently 1/4 of the content was cut.
The Brotherhood feels specially weird not well developed in this game. They have two bases with literally nothing in them, aside from generic NPCs, and one with some great gear and a super computer that can improve your stats. And that's it. There's no apparent explanation for them to know your name and even know about "The Prophecy of The Chosen One", as is suggested when Matt is killed by Frank Horrigan. It seems that they only know about you to keep the player curious and incentivize them to go to key locations and move the plot forward. As you're like: "how do these guys know my name? I gotta get to their next base to find out", but when you get there and ask for answers, they say some BS like: "we know about a lot of things... Now steal the Vertibird plans for us and we'll grant you access to some powerful gear".
The Enclave, despite being a cool concept, are not as interesting and well developed as The Master.
Inconsistency in tone, pop culture references, 4th wall breaks and straight up bad lore
So the game has a serious problem with tone. It has a serious main quest and serious side quests with moral dilemmas and politics, but this is all disturbed by constant jokes, references and 4th wall breaks that completely destroy the immersion for me.
See, within the first 10 hours or so I was really, really enjoying the game. By the time I was doing the Vault City - Gecko side quest, I was convinced that the game was indeed better than Fallout 1, due to it's massive world with many quests, choices and consequences. I was like "yeah, they really doubled down on the RPG aspects of the game". The thing is that I had not experienced any 4th breaks or egregiously silly stuff yet, aside from maybe the "Rat God", but then I encountered the talking Deathclaws at Vault 13. That's what I mean by "bad lore". Seriously, I'm gonna have to call BS on that concept, no matter what justification you give me. It's just dumb. And what disappoints is that it's at Vault 13, a location I was eager and curious to see in the sequel. What could have happened to it? What could have changed in 80 years, specially after the events of the first game? ... Uh, talking Deathclaws? Well, that's certainly subverted expectations... just not in a good way. Honestly, they could have just made the Vault empty, have the GECK there to be found as normal, and leave the player curious to learn what happened, to then reveal at the end that the Enclave captured everyone.
What's strange is that only after encountering the talking Deathclaws that the 4th wall breaks started appearing to me. I don't know if this is just a coincidence, but I started getting all those silly random encounters, with the Mad Brahmins being the first one (which, coincidentally gave me the "Hope you've saved your game, cause you're dead" deathscreen right after). Do they only start appearing after you find Vault 13? Now, I've made a list of all silly/dumb/4th wall break encounters I've got.
As for the pop culture references, I didn't catch most of them, since I'm a zoomer and a lot of them are very specific to the 90s. Didn't watch Monty Python or most of the other media referenced in the game either, so they didn't annoy me like the actual 4th wall breaks. There were a lot of instances where I was like "yeah, that's probably a reference to some 70s - 90s movie or show I didn't watch ".
There is room for silly stuff in Fallout, obviously. Silly/humorous stuff that didn't annoy me at all were things like the Yakuza Vs. Mobster combat encounters, the hilarious video call with the Enclave soldier, or Sargent Arch Dornan "Trooper, what are you doing here, GET BACK TO YOUR GUARD POST!!!".
In short, the game could have a very serious tone and immersive setting, just like the first one, if it wasn't for the constant breaks the developers inserted to try to give it some comic relief. The thing is that they overdone it, while Fallout 1 did humor just right: Harry and his stupidly named squad) were really funny in a way that enhanced the world building. So were the low Int dialogue options. Thankfully Obsidian came up with Wild Wasteland for New Vegas, which solved this issue. I wish Fallout 2 had a similar feature, so people can choose if they want to enable all the silly stuff or play a more serious game. Do you guys know of any mod that does this?
Some mild annoyances
I've encountered some mild annoyances in dialogue, such as Renesco not acknowledging that I've already talked to him, making it so everyime I interacted with him my only dialogue options would be to either introduce myself or say "I think I'm at the wrong place, bye" and leave, even though we've already met. Also, when I first talked to Tandy, she responded me with "What?" and my only dialogue option would be to tell her I had solved the Vault 15 situation, only to end conversation and then having to talk to her again so introduce myself. I suppose this can happen if you deal with the New Khans at Vault 15 before talking to Tandy for the first time, which I did. The game has some weird dialogue oversights/bugs like this that I think are valid to point out. I didn't encounter issues like this in Fallout 1.
Also, in the end-game slides, there was contradiction between the Gecko's and Vault City's slides. It was said that Vault City's isolationsm made them stagnate and be absorbed by the NCR, while at the same time saying that Gecko's power plant optmizations helped Vault City expand, and that they let their xenophobia aside and a new era of cooperation between ghouls and humans started.
The end-game slides said that I wiped the Deathclaws at Vault 13, when was actually the Enclave that did this. Weird.
The game has only 13 Talking Heads. Now that's a bummer, specially considering that Fallout 1 had 21. It's even more noticable when you take into account that Fallout 2 has many more NPCs overall, so there are actually far more "Talking Heads per capita" in the first game than in the second, and it shows. Now, that's probably because they've made this game within less than a year IIRC, so I won't blame them. Fallout 1 was also supposed to have many more talking heads.
Now, these are some mild annoyances that don't take much away from the experience, but I felt were valid to point out.
Conclusion
Now, this long wall of text probably made it seem I disliked the game, but I really didn't. It's a very good game, and an exceptional CRPG. I just think it's not on the same level as Fallout 1, solely because of it's (in my opinion) weaker story and constant breaks in immersion that aren't that funny to begin with and add nothing of substance to the experience. There are no engine optimizations, quality of life additions and gameplay and UI improvements that make up for the lack of that eerie, almost opressive, yet epic atmosphere and story the first game has. The sequel doesn't live up to the expectaions for me, so I rank it lower. Overall, 8/10.

2024.04.22 17:12 DeadOnLearningTarget Post your observations, walkthroughs, or other communication from your admin.

I just saw another post about being let go after three years of great evaluations, and I got several upvotes on a comment about this a few weeks ago and have decided to follow up on that. Everyone post your walkthroughs! Let’s hold admin’s feet to the fire a little bit and see how inconsistent these are across schools, states, and country. Let’s celebrate, congratulate, critique, and laugh together. Humbly- here is an observation that I got during a district unit assessment the week before winter break from a few years ago. I got put on an improvement plan afterwards. I want to reiterate. This was for a district required assessment...in literacy...the week before winter break...and my admin was concerned about my science instruction. Makes a lot of sense right???
Here is the observation and feedback I got. Only edits are for anonymity.
Slide projected: Testing (this is Unit 2 Assessment) During the Test (four points) and After the Test (two bullets) Literacy objective on board states, "Published writing piece due - W Unit 2 Assessment Th On the board: Homework (Reading HW due Friday or agenda signed if not) I wanna be the very best noise voice levels posted Physical map of TX on one board Student artwork posted Reading & writing posters displayed Desk arrangement allows for flexible seating or student movement and interaction (that would typically be seen during instruction, pre-conferences, and other applicable means. I have not noticed learning targets posted in student language - TEK objectives at times are on board yet should have student language
Describe the student data management system(s) in place: The standards for the unit test align with the district scope and sequence. A learning objective should be posted and referenced/stated so the students demonstrate they connect to the "why?". The test was planned to assess "what students should know and be able to do." I am added to the plans in the school binder
Moving forward: Develop science lessons where students engage and touch/conduct the experiments with less focus on a video or teacher demonstration. Focus on activities promoting student inquiry, curiosity, and or exploration. Stay on course with the team plans - time on task; same opportunities as other classes; students in class and responsible for their learning
The teacher and students were in their seats and students were eating their snacks. He told them that today was the day they were testing. He described Unit 2 in Reading Assessment and that they will enter answers in Edugence after they finish the test (like they did in math Unit 2) The teacher began the explanation from the front of the room. He read the questions aloud for the children to follow and explained how they can show their work. He explained how he is assisting the students in showing work and strategies independently: I do, we do, and you do During the Test (four points) and After the Test (two bullets) - how were students engaged or demonstrate proficiency prior to, during, and after testing?
Descriptive Walk Through/Observation notes: What is the date? T, "Today is 12/14" So, looking at the question, go over to question one. I'm going to read, just the question to you, not the answers and I'm going to tell you how to prove your answer, so I know... Just like the ...assessment, I showed you the Google Classroom..." So, look at question one, open to question one." (Name), the second time I'm telling you, that needs to be away. I am giving participation points. I suggest...we're not taking it right now...or you're going to be confused..." Question one read aloud - "...so go back to the text, don't go back right now, write, go back and look. So next to question one, you're going to write, go back. And then, you're going to find the question number next to where you found the answer. Okay." Number two it says, ... Conclude means - basically Don't need to be using a pen on this anyway Means to explain your answer, so you are going to write "why?" not St asked, "What question?" T stated question Prior to number six, a st asked a question and he responded, "No." Number six - read aloud and then asked the students to write 'go back' I bet you're going to find ...in the selection. St. stated, there are a lot of 'go-backs and the teacher responded, "There are a lot of go-backs." He explained he knows what it is like to fizzle out and prompted them to stick with the test. 9:57 am The class then looked at story two. The teacher let them know they will do a brain break at this point (eat a snack, restroom, a good time to focus on that. Not on number three when - student made statement and teacher responded he is in the middle of talking.) So looking at We Love Cheese, this passage is super interesting because I know you love cheese. Many students agreed and others disagreed. He continued reading the questions Most students observed writing what he stated they should write. While explaining the class should go back to seven some students stated eight. Number 11 - read aloud two times I'm not going to go over any more of this, remember when you are finished...I'm going to help you..." Few hands up 10:04 am a few students walked up to the teacher Last question and we are going to get started Okay, your voices need to be completely off. (Name, you can go back to your seat because...) Raise your hand if you need help but I want you to try on your own for about 20 minutes. If you get to one you don't know skip it because that is a good test-taking strategy. St asked a question and the teacher sat at his desk with three girls Alright, I am going to put it on Edugence then I will be walking around to (student stated out loud, 'check it, and T responded, "yes to check on you." 10:07 St took the test up and the Teacher explained that he didn't have his name on it or prove his answers. St sat back down. T walked around the room and stated he was giving points to people using their strategies." Stated, "that is a good idea" to a child's comment. 10:10 am a student asked to refill her water bottle and 15 st were working on their test 10:11 a student asked the teacher a question and he responded and another student reentered the classroom A student asked the teacher about a question and he shared he could underline it to show the response/where found. Another showed the teacher her work and he stated, "Yeah that is fine." St left for the restroom and took the lanyard to do so while the teacher reviewed a student's finished test Two girls were working at the teacher table and another worked at her seat instead 10:15 st asked him about underlining a part of the passage and another raised her hand and he asked her to hang on; she got up to show signal to go to the bathroom Another student showed him her test and asked a question, so he had her go to his table; she did while another st brought his Chromebook to the teacher where they discussed the assessment and Edugence, "Go grab your assessment." The student added answers onto the computer. T worked with the two children at the teacher's table. He checked on a student and said, "Yup." HS helper picked up a student 10:18 Teacher took the child's test to return when he finished working with the HS helper. The teacher had three tests. 10:19 student asked to use restroom and Teacher asked her to check on another student - 12 students were in the classroom at this time T checked back on a student who asked a prior question. A student raised his hand (back of the room) and raised it again after T at front of the room looking at the children and T walked over to help 10:21 St shared he was done and T asked him to review; another student selected a book to read when done and a student requested to use the restroom 10:22 Two girls sharing items from their desk and another asked to use the restroom and was told she could have another returned; teacher helped a child read a word 10:24 T resolved the bathroom issue with a bug and asked if the lanyard was back. He asked a student what she was doing - geared her to sit back down "We have about thirty more minutes to work on it." 10:25 T continued to walk around the classroom to monitor students and a student put his test in the clear tote - 14 students working in the classroom; another student turned his test into the clear bucket; T asked a student to take a breather and another to wait a second for her question. 10:28 He asked a student to do a little breathing at their desk. A student took out her Chromebook to enter her answers from the test; T checked on her (discussed snack) and set up Edugence 10:30 One student reading, one in the clinic, and others testing
Content Knowledge and Expertise 2.2 - the team uses content and pedagogical expertise to design and execute lessons aligned with state standards, related content, and student needs.
Communication 2.3 - visual supports are strong; no verbal or written miscommunications were noted How can you provide wait time when posing questions? When planning for the next assessment, how will you provide opportunities for the students to communicate prior or identify/mitigate their misunderstandings on the front end and while checking on their progress? How do you plan your individual lessons to support persistence, deeper learning, and effective effort
Differentiation 2.4- During the observation, no lessons were individualized nor different methods offered; as the teacher instructed or talked about pointers prior to testing, there were several students who disengaged yet all tried hard to do what they thought they were being asked to do - some of the confusion was not recognized
Monitor and Adjust 2.5 - I did not observe the teacher formally and informally collect, analyze, and use student progress data to make needed lesson adjustments prior to (when reading questions aloud) or during testing. Behavior was monitored yet several students walked around or got up to use the restroom How do you solicit input from students and check for understanding during testing? (Questions and academic feedback/effort)
Discuss/Wonderings: What evidence did you utilize to plan for how individual and group learning would occur in the lesson plan and during the lesson? Example - Instruction 2.1 - intentionally stating academic expectations, what mastery will look like; test did build in opportunities for self-correction and monitoring How could you have arranged the lesson to model effective questioning techniques such that the students had the purposeful time/opportunity to generate questions or show their thinking; student-to-student interactions that led to thinking and promoted complex, higher-order thinking or real-world connections prior to testing - practicing test-taking strategies with a clear understanding of the why and how? How could you post the learning target in student-friendly language so there is a strong connection to the standard or essential questions prior to, during, and after learning? Peer communication should be built into lessons and a variety of question types used to facilitate discussions; How can you include a variety of response techniques to encourage all students to participate and to do so in a variety of ways: verbally and visually? What proved to be most effective in preventing student confusion or disengagement? Proximity was used to determine engagement and success towards the learning target This is the follow up to that observation a few weeks later where I was put on an improvement plan. I want to clarify again. This is all because she observes me administering a district required assessment during literacy and she was really concerned about my science instruction. That doesn't make a lot of sense to me, and I'm so embarrassed and annoyed with myself that I didn't push back enough on this. On November 4, I observed in your classroom and we met on November 11, to unpack Domains l-lll addressing the rubric data and questions in each area to guide you in planning stronger lessons. On December 14 I observed your classroom in order to observe your actions, student actions, interactions, and conversations during a lesson. We met to unpack the data on Friday, January 7. Specifically, during the observation, I focused on the following targeted domains: o Domain 1: Planning o Domain 2: lnstruction o Domain 3: Learning Environment During my observation and walkthrough, I gathered the following relevant pieces of evidence: o Domain 1: Planning. Dimension 1.1: Standards and Alignment. On December 14, the lesson-lacked evidence of a plan that was learner-centered, sequenced, or that included higher-order thinking which negatively impacted student engagement. The lesson was not clear in its design, organization, or pacing, specifically for the grade level taught. Adjustments to student needs and learning styles were not included, nor was instruction flexible based on formative student assessment. o Domain 2: instruction.2.2: Content Knowledge Expertise On December 14, content and pedagogical expertise to design and execute a lesson aligned with state standards, related content, and student needs were not included. There was no clear learning target communicated to students, nor were opportunities to use different types of thinking presented. o Domain 3: Learning Environment. Dimension 3.3 Classroom Culture. On December 14, l observed little evidence of established routines, procedures, or clear communication regarding expectations for student behavior in your classroom reflective of high expectations for student learning. Relevant and meaningful learning was not the norm as evidenced by student responses including disengagement of 10-15 students at different points in the lesson. We discussed that students were either having off-task conversations, lacked necessary materials on desks, or sat with low attention/low commitment in a ritually compliant manner as the teacher did the majority of the speaking. We discussed that the students were not taking notes, discussing their observations in table groups or with others, or given explicit directions on how and what they would be learning. Based on the observation, walkthrough, and post-conference January 7, we met this week to agree upon the refinement goal wording and suggested strategies targeting achievement of the following goal: I will use content and pedagogical expertise to design and execute learner-centered lessons that provide relevant, meaningful learning so that my students can increase their level of engagement at high levels of thinking in the learning process within a positive classroom culture.
The following actions will assist you and will provide evidence of progress and/or attainment of the new refinement goal: o By 5:00 pm. on the Friday of each instructional week, and until further notice, submit your weekly lesson plans to me, including: o An identification of engaging, collaborative learner-centered activities, learning targets, procedures for the classroom, and necessary instructional materials for lessons o The purpose for each activity (how it aligns to the learning target) o clear instructions appropriate student participation for each activity that will be communicated to students and expectations for o Times for each lesson including indications of movement from one grouping to another such as the whole group to small group and approximate time planned for each smill group o 4-5 planned questions that you intend to ask for each activity to engage students o learning target to teach and conference with her as an lnstructional Coach.
Plan a lesson with at least five higher-level questions that require students to understand, apply, synthesize, and evaluate real-life situations. A concluding activity that will be used to determine whether students achieved the lesson specialist to review language, math, or science lesson plans based on student assessment and knowledge of the studenis. Meet-with campus instructional Specialists to plan two lessons together for you Submit Thursday at 5:00 p.m. prior to instruction. o create a list of five higher-level questions that you will ask during the lesson o Submit a copy of the lesson plan to me

2024.04.15 21:30 Serg_Busel BNCW episode, 04/15/2024

BNCW episode, 04/15/2024
👨‍🚀 Phew, the Arena shootout is finally over. Call in the medics and janitors! And we'll also need a special squad, just in case the Commanders encounter weird memes and they will need some explanation. But for now, let's recap the results of previous clan wars.
But first, another challenge from HQ. By completing it, the leader of the mentioned clan can pass on a reward to one of their fellow clan members - 1 Boss Key. Passing the baton to the HYDE clan this time. Your leader must place any ship in the defense slot and survive. In other words, the leader's ship must not be destroyed with 3 stars. We'll review the results of the challenge in the next episode. Now - let's get going.
▪ We asked the Arena manager twice if there were any manipulations with the opponent selection system on his part this season. He replied no. It's truly surprising that the main Xaoc roster still maintains its position and doesn't allow anyone to climb to the top 1 spot in the clan leaderboard. At the time of writing this episode, we still don't know about their upcoming opponents. But we can talk about the latest ones. They turned out to be RussianGalaxy. They didn't intend to surrender their positions, despite Xaoc's numerical superiority. That's exactly what a true Commander would do. While RussianGalaxy may need to work on their attack speed, their counter-builds are spot on. Almost immediately, they demolished the defense of Kabuto, Krigerskold, MiranMk2, and Revenant, all in 4 consecutive attacks! Even Achilles fell in the end. However, they faced problems with SparrowMk2 and EidolonMk2. A total of 20 attacks were spent on both ships, 10 on each. As a result, two ships left unfinished guaranteed RussianGalaxy's defeat with a score of 24:18. Nevertheless, anything is possible towards the end of the season. We wish RussianGalaxy good luck, congratulate Xaoc, and move on.
▪ Representatives of TheFinalFrontier admitted that with each encounter against HYDE, the latter became stronger and stronger. Even some HYDE representatives themselves confess that wars against TFF are beneficial for them. TFF continues to conduct their successful attacks on average within 5 minutes, indicating serious intra-clan discipline, accumulated combat and engineering experience, and, of course, high upgrades. But even in such conditions, HYDE managed to destroy ElkMk2, SparrowMk2, and Revenant. A commendable result. The final score was 24:11 in favor of TFF. The HQ is confident that the next war for HYDE will seem like a piece of cake after this.
▪ Unfortunately, КосмоФлот couldn't make the legendary comeback as YourFace did in their previous war against Blackhole. Although all conditions were there for it. They were lacking 1 star to equalize the score. All because of the extremely experienced Commander 天切再不斬, who made an effective defense build on Revenant. Every time КосмоФлот attacked him, he shouted into his walkie-talkie, "You shall not pass!" and performed cool maneuvers, preventing the ship from being significantly scratched. Well, okay, maybe it didn't happen. But it sounds epic, doesn't it? The final score was 24:23 in favor of YF. And here's the list of Commanders-winners whose attacks were conducted with 3 stars: LazerFace, AnOgreFace, MeZorFace, NumbFace, Hydra, alternatiwe, GFace, GoldenFace, BigAsiaFace, CaptCaveman.
▪ The last war wasn't easy for the Єдність clan either, as they also faced experienced Commanders who created what's called an academy. We're talking about the aAofA clan. They scored 12 stars without any problems. They could've scored more, but they lacked firepower. In our estimation, only 5 out of 15 Commanders from aAofA attacked in this war. Nevertheless, the past cannot be changed, even in space. The final score was 21:12 in favor of Єдність.
▪ Clan ЗЕМЛЯНЕ this season mostly encounters experienced clans. And in the last war, they fought against the GermanNight'Club clan. The latter conducted very effective intelligence: in the first 5 attacks, they destroyed Achilles, WingMk2, MiranMk2, and ElkMk2. ЗЕМЛЯНЕ also managed to take down Krigerskold, Achilles, and EidolonMk2 in their first 5 attacks. But they completely forgot that this clan has an invincible hammer. This is literally Terminator's MjollnirMk2. Many Commanders crashed into his ship, and ЗЕМЛЯНЕ met the same fate. As a result, after 14 attacks, the ship was scratched for 1 star, guaranteeing GermanNight'Club's victory. And there's serious work ahead for ЗЕМЛЯНЕ on attacks' times. The final score was 24:22.
▪ [GH]Ghosts clashed with the Космоцыгане clan. The latter is clearly not ready to meet this clan yet. [GH]Ghosts know their business, even though they're currently only fighting on Carriers. The final score was 24:12.
▪ Special attention of the Arena audience was drawn to the war between two veterans: BurnToDeft and AofA. According to the HQ's analytical reports, both clans had equal chances of winning this time. The battle was heading towards a tie at 24 stars. However, SparrowMk2 of Commander [Deft]Vek intervened. Even the last two attacks by Commander corwin11 from AofA half an hour before the end of the war couldn't change anything. Less than half of the AofA representatives attacked this time. In BTD, this number is higher, but not all Commanders showed up for the war there either. Both clans surely drew conclusions after these battles. The HQ announces the final score - 24:22 in favor of BTD.
▪ One who truly surprised the audience and the HQ, is the Руссич clan! Not only did almost all Commanders from this clan attack, but they also managed to score 24 stars relatively quickly. Perhaps the clan conducted some drills recently? Or is it the result of previous wars against the top 10 clans? In any case, HungaryArmada will definitely want a rematch sooner or later. We'll be waiting for that moment. But for now, keep score - 24:10.
▪ Dominus held a class on "How to conduct intelligence and identify the opponent's weak spots in builds for beginners." TheLegends were the listeners. Well, on their example, Dominus showed the importance of the element of surprise in defense builds. LEG certainly learned something new. And they also managed to show themselves - during the war, Dominus lost communication with their SparrowMk2 and Krigerskold. Even veterans have gaps in defense. Nevermind. The final score was 24:9 in favor of DOM.
As usual, here are the winners among the top 20 clans that were not mentioned by the HQ.
💡 The "Not very quick, but consistent" Achievement goes to the second Xaoc roster. They conducted their successful attacks in 9 minutes and 56 seconds against ShadowReavers.
💡 The "Just to Be Sure!" Achievement goes to DynaTek- they conducted 19 successful attacks against the CzechSpaceArmy clan.
💡 The "Speedy Fleet" Achievement goes to the КосмоКот&Хаос clan. They won in 6 minutes and 42 seconds against Мародёры.
Other winners among the top 20 clans: - Blackhole - Вольные Капитаны - KissMyOnion

2024.04.12 02:23 OnlyHalfAverage Heads up! Guide: Double Credits Event Farming Methods

So with Double Credit Weekend coming tomorrow starting 11 EST I thought I’d share some methods I’ve devised for farming credits most efficient and effectively.
This is NOT a Profit Taker Guide.
Firstly, there are 2 main (and one less known ‘secret’!) methods through which people generally grind credits, with the sheer duration it takes you to complete a single reward cycle increasing as you become more powerful for any newer players. These methods are as follows:
• The Index, Endurance - Beginner friendly, unlocked at Neptune - Most consistent method - Medium Profit, rewards 1,200,000
• Profit Taker (PT) - Locked behind Solaris United Rank 5 - Most advanced farm - Potential for the most profit - Optimal setup + luck, rewards 12,000,000
• Railjack (!) - Scrap spare parts for Endo! - Profit varies heavily with mission - 100k mission reward in Veil Proxima - Railjack exclusive mods, Internal Bleeding, Hemorrhage, to sell for plat!
To begin with the explanation, all calculations assume optimal setups.
With PT you will need:
2x - Chroma, 4th Ability within 10 meters of PT upon defeat. 2x - Credit Booster 1.25x - Credit Blessing 2-4x- Smeeta Kavat with Charm and Tek Enhance mods 2x - Weekend Credit Event 2x - Thermia Fracture Credit Buff
This totals to 20-40-80x multiplier depending on if your Charm procs, which can happen twice and stack with [Tek Enhance]. Base Reward being 150,000(80) equals 12,000,000 credits at most! With the other proc options being 3-6 million respectively.
Secondly Index, rewards 1,200,000 per run.
Since Index does not ‘drop’ credits the same as enemies the reward cannot be boosted my Chroma. (Or Thermia boost since we’re counting lol) In this case with double credits event, the total comes out to 5x booster with 250,000 base reward minus 50,000 for the initial investment.
IMPORTANT - Traveling to your Clan Dojo, then starting Index from Dojo navigation while being the host guarantees the Mountain Tileset!
Lastly, Railjack! The mission reward will vary depending on which veil proxima you are in and which mission you complete. Due to the credits falling under mission rewards, it is only affected by the booster the blessing and the global event totaling 5x. This can reward up to 500k per mission at the highest difficulty. As stated above, this is also a great way to gain endo and only becomes easier as you get more powerful and gain a crew.
Finally, I hope this helps others and apologies for any formatting or issues otherwise as this was written on my phone at the end of a 12 hour shift and if anyone has any questions don’t hesitate to voice them!

2024.04.03 17:16 ForeverWizard Aphelion 1.5: Breach & Clear

I've posted this a day later than I wanted to (really want to stick to weekly on Tuesday), but now that my wife and I are on the mend, I can dedicate a little more time to writing/editing and art again.
First Prev Next
We had been clearing rooms in Engineering for two hours, and my body felt like seven shades of hell. I leaned against Taga’s back, enjoying the warmth of his scales, while he sat on the ground, forge-welding bulkhead panels together with his bare hands. A few hours ago, I would have been fascinated with how he did it; now, I just closed my eyes and enjoyed the ambient warmth as it did wonderful things to my muscles.
I’m getting ahead of myself. Let’s take it back to the beginning.
Heshae and I arrived in the middle of a firefight: Ulketh and his guards were on one side, and the same squad I saw in the hold was on the other. It was a large, diamond-shaped room split into an upper and lower level—a grated observation deck up top for the overseers and a mess of pipes that descended from the ceiling into a labyrinth of machines on the lower level.
A set of stairs that split the diamond in half connected the lower and upper floors; Heshae and I were closer to them, but the attacking group had the straighter route.
Ulketh’s guards were firing kinetic weapons from the balcony on the upper level with practiced ease, using their constructed defenses to their advantage. Behind the safety of his guards was Ulketh, firing off wild, frantic shots of crystal shards with a strange crescent-shaped weapon wherever he found an opening.
Taga was pushing a crate the size of a small car down the main corridor on the lower level, which kept Ulketh and his guards from getting a good angle on him. Whenever the guards’ fire died, his companions would pop out from cover and answer back with cobbled-together crossbows and captured small arms while Taga continued to push toward the stairs.
I winced as their shots bounced harmlessly around the defenders’ barricades. Our side was making a good show of it, but they weren’t taking the time to be precise with their shots. The defenders on the upper level reloaded calmly, almost unconcerned by their advance. A lack of space or ammo would stop them at some point. Even if it didn’t, I didn’t think Taga could carry the crate up the stairs.
I turned back to Heshae and whispered, “I don’t know how they’re going to make that last charge up to the balcony once they’re forced to abandon cover.”
She peeked over my head as I continued to watch things unfold. Something about the defenders’ tactics was…odd. They had an elevated position and superior firepower; it didn’t make sense to try and pick them off. Why not just flank them and take them out? I couldn’t put my finger on it, though.
Heshae’s quarterstaff tapped the ground. She took a deep breath and replied, “Neither do I. Taga is strong, but he’s not made of [warrior-elite-magic-living-metal]. Perhaps we could distract the overseers and give them enough time to advance.”
“Move further down, you morons!” Ulketh shouted, his gun arm gesturing wildly in the air. As soon as he popped his head out to berate his guards, a firebomb arced over Taga’s crate and shattered against the ceiling, raining fire down on the balcony. Liquid flame dripped through the balcony grating, bathing the entire room in an orange-yellow glow, and a scream of frustration burst from the upper level.
Ulketh slid further in our direction with his guards in tow, speaking in a low voice at his guards before he moved to the back of the room and out of my line of sight. I heard something heavy being moved upstairs, but I couldn’t tell what it was from my vantage point.
“Why don’t you go fuck a [ravenous-slaughter-predator-terror-stalker], you [voidborn-refuse-eater]!” A smaller, modulated version of my voice yelled out from behind the barricade. Even without a complete understanding of what was said, I chuckled a bit and nodded to myself.
I started to sneak out from the doorway in a crouch until a thin fragment of purple crystal whizzed past my face and struck the wall. My head whipped upward, and I saw Ulketh looking right at me, his eyebrows raised. His mouth moved, but I couldn’t make out what he was saying.
A second shot struck an inch from the first. I spun back into the doorway beside Heshae, wiping sweat from my forehead.
That guy may act like he’s out of control, but he doesn’t shoot like it. Screw it, let’s get mean.
I blew a lock of hair away from my face and looked at Heshae. “Once I make it to the stairs, have the others follow me up. Push them towards the fire.”
I didn't give her time to agree and dashed from my cover in the doorway, making a beeline for the stairs. The shh-kee shh-kee sound of two more shots peppered my previous position as Ulketh continued to draw a bead on me. I ignored the shards that shattered against the machine behind me as my hands danced in the air.
Excess anima created a white-gray cat’s cradle from my fingertips, which burst into silver ribbons as my casting completed. I didn’t have the time to ensure my casting was efficient, but I got the result I wanted: part of the bulkhead beside me groaned and sagged as I pushed forward.
“Vass, we have a problem,” he said, one hand pressed to the base of his neck, the other firing his weapon repeatedly. One shard pierced my robes before shattering against my skin, another hit my neck and deflected into the wall, and a third caught in my hair and shook out onto the ground a few seconds later.
His rounds shattered when they hit the bulkhead; now, they did the same with me. I couldn’t catch what he said as he turned around, but I saw him motion to the other guards and jog casually for the door at the other end of the balcony.
“You’re fuckin’ right you have a problem!” I yelled back as I slid to the bottom of the stairs. A guard posted at the top of the stairs whipped his rifle over their barricade and trained it on me; I roared at him in response. My blood was pumping in my ears as my hands yanked at the handrail, propelling me up the stairs three at a time.
The eyes of the Gaal guard widened in shock as I rushed him, and he sprayed a hail of fire down at me. Two shots smacked into me that felt like someone driving their fist into my chest, and I tried to ignore it. Another shot hit me in the stomach and knocked the wind out of me, driving me to one knee. The next shot felt like someone jamming their boot into my right shoulder, and the pain drove me to the ground.
I was now officially pissed off.
My left hand reached through the railing to my left toward the droplets of flame and tensed into a claw, then raked across my body like I was tossing something. I dredged up a recollection of a flamethrower and merged it with the memory of a snowstorm that blew so hard the snow seemed to come from the side instead of above me. Anima trailed from my hands like silver-white claw slashes, and the puddles of flame on the ground raked up at an angle, spraying the guard with gouts of flame.
Before the screaming started I was already up on my feet and scrambling up the stairs. My hand gripped around the barrel of his weapon and tore the weapon from his hands. I must have broken a finger or two because his screaming got louder and he clutched at his hand, still smoking from the temporary blast of flame.
The screaming abruptly stopped once I choked up on the rifle with both hands and smacked it against his shoulder, sending him tumbling against the nearby wall. He struck with a dull whump, but I didn’t have time to inspect my handiwork; I was already shoving his cover into a position I could use to continue my assault.
“…Understood. We’re moving,” Ulketh said with a cold calm, his burning white eyes sizing me up with ruthless curiosity. “Fall back and burn the door shut.”
He bowed to me—actually bowed to me, the bastard—and fired another trio of shots against my cover, then dipped through the doorway on the other side of the upper level. His guards continued to fire their shots in rotating bursts as they followed him.
Three of the people on our side made it up the stairs moments later and dashed for the door, followed by Taga and Heshae. Their pounding on the door was ceaseless, but through it all, I heard Heshae say, “…Very headstrong.”
I smirked and sat down against the barricade as Taga stood over us, watching the door. I wasn’t going to lie to myself, those shots had hurt. I’d probably be sporting bruises tomorrow. Taga’s massive pangolin-crocodile head swung from smiling at me (at least, I hoped it was smiling) to the three at the door.
“WON’T OPEN. WELDED SHUT. WAIT FOR OTHERS.”
Holy shit, his voice was loud. Well, my voice in his mouth was loud. After the initial confusion, Heshae explained how I was able to talk to them, which saved me the trouble. I checked myself for any lasting damage, Taga helped me to my feet, and we retreated a few rooms away while the engineers worked on the door. I looked at the two new holes in my robes with no small amount of regret; it felt like I was whittling on a memory of home.
Overall, it was one hell of an introduction.
The next two hours were a crash course in species and personalities. While I was already well acquainted with the various personalities and vagaries of different species that lived in close proximity to my own, those groups banded together out of necessity and tradition. We stopped thinking of ourselves as a series of different species and just felt like we were the “survivors.”
These people had a common language and a common goal, but that was where the camaraderie stopped.
Rexiel was the fox-lizard with four arms from the cargo hold. He was from a species called the Udari, part of the Corath caste. Over the last two hours, I heard him say a total of six words; he tended to use sign language to converse with the others. That is, when he wasn’t sharpening his shortsword, slinking through the shadows to try and dispatch someone, or brooding like broody people do when they’re psyching themselves up for something self-destructive.
I got the feeling Rexiel was completely comfortable ending people on a regular basis. Either that, or he was a damn fine actor.
The smaller creature from earlier in the hold was another Onalir named Messec. He sported an environmental suit with the same coloring as Duguf and used a weapon that looked like a crossbow mixed with a combustion engine that shot quills dipped in neurotoxin. His neurotoxin. He explained that Onalir stay inside their suits when they’re not in an enclave because of it; if you brush up against them, you’ll find it pretty hard to breathe in the next minute or so.
He disabled the engines during the initial uprising but got separated from his group during his escape from primary propulsion. The mad little guy traversed the access tunnels from one end of the ship to the other just to join back up and continue the fight.
He was the one who chucked the firebomb earlier. I liked him.
The Firoma’s name was Ereia, and she was absolutely stunning. When I was growing up, I found several Pact species and genders attractive, but she put them all to shame. Her dark skin had a scattering of dusky lavender freckles, and her long, straight sunset-colored hair framed her face like a splash of twilight. She wore her hair tied into a long braid that she wrapped around her neck and pinned to the collar of her short cloak.
After the third or fourth skirmish, we found ourselves sitting next to one another passing a waterskin back and forth, and she complimented my hair. I replied, “Yeah, uh… you too… yeah.”
Hooray for eloquence; Gods preserve us.
We actually had a decent conversation once I found my voice again. I learned that her beauty was the reason her parents sold her into slavery. She was trained and eventually auctioned, and I was surprised and disheartened that she didn’t seem bitter about it. I gave her some insight into human anatomy, and she revealed that she had seduced Ulketh and destroyed his “Circlet of Authority,” which was the catalyst for the entire uprising.
I didn’t need much explanation to figure out what the Circlet was for, and her description of the pain it inflicted was so matter-of-fact that I got queasy. My skin crawled when I thought of my attraction to her, especially after knowing her story. It took a little time for me to circle around to apologize for it, but she responded with a nonchalant shrug and said, “You can’t help what you like.”
I still felt like crap about it.
Last but certainly not least, Taga Night-Breaking-Clear, the Embrial the size of a freight train. Of all of the creatures that composed this assault group, he was the most open. My stunt in the cargo hold that nearly got me killed made me somewhat of a good luck charm in his eyes, and he was going to make sure that I and everyone else knew it, too.
His unshakable faith in me was because of his unshakable faith in Lasaret, a two-faced God who practiced honesty and deceit in equal measure.
Here’s how he explained it: acting without warning my enemy was deceitful. But, I also worked out of a need to free an innocent (myself), and there was no guile in that action. So, it was an honest action done deceitfully—the ultimate expression of Lasaret’s will on the universe. Seeing as it was my first action after being released from my chrysalis, Taga took it as a sign that he was acting within Lasaret’s auspices.
I mentioned that almost every action could have ulterior motives but ultimately benefit someone. Taga brightened—and by that, I mean the light under his scales increased in brightness—and he said that was part of the point. I still didn’t get it. I replied that I’d have to read the pamphlet later, but I don’t think he got the joke.
Life settled into a strange rhythm. We’d clear a room of personnel and traps, mark it off our map, breach whatever barricades the defenders had made, reset the doors' codes, and do it all over again. It was grating work. The fighting part of the process lost its luster after the fourth or fifth skirmish when Ulketh and his various Rent-a-Bastards managed to slip away.
Mercifully, we were making progress, and people started talking about the Lifeweaver Nexus in more urgent tones. After listening for a bit, I spoke up, “So the Lifeweaver Nexus controls air, heat, and water. Why haven’t they turned those off, just asphyxiate us or make us freeze to death?”
Messec said, “Safeguards won’t let them. Those systems are ‘always on,’ which keeps owners and captains from threatening their vassals or crew with it. Morality safeguards, the Confederacy calls them.”
“And there’s no way to turn them off,” I said, “No override; they can’t grab something and pry out those safeguards?”
“It’d be like committing suicide, if it even worked in the first place. No, they’re holed up in there because it’s the location most hardened against attack,” Messec said.
“RUSH THEM. FINISH THIS, THEN WE LEAVE,” Taga said, bumping his knuckles against the ground with a whump.
“If we move hastily, we’re likely to have more casualties,” Heshae responded.
Rexiel clapped his hands and pointed to his eyes, then gestured in the direction of the Nexus. We all watched him make an intricate series of signs before he said, “Spy.”
Ereia nodded and shouldered her rifle, “Rex is right: he can get in and see what’s happening, then report back. Until then, we wait.”
I slumped down against the wall and rubbed my stomach, which growled about ten minutes ago. I hated waiting.
Messec drew Rexiel aside, hastily sketched a series of diagrams on a piece of paper, and passed it to Rexiel. He spun slowly as he oriented himself to the map, and then stalked into the gloom of the portside door. The others broke out and passed around wafers that smelled vaguely of soap while I continued to get grumpier over not being able to eat anything. I chugged some more water and pitied the next unfriendly person who crossed my path.
Like clockwork, I closed my eyes and checked my Tether: about a third left in the tank.
I was afraid of that. Since I came to consciousness, most of my time had been spent repeatedly casting translation spells. The spells I cast didn’t have a chance to settle into a rhythm where they’d sip at my anima. Instead, I was casting them, dispelling them, then casting them again. I was causing my anima to surge every time I’d cast, like flipping the switch on a cold light bulb. Repeated casting had chipped away at my reserves.
It didn’t help that I was also being slapdash with my casting; when a Human’s casting is “complete,” it doesn’t emit excess Anima. It just happens. I was sacrificing efficiency for speed. Well, if it worked, I wasn’t going to complain. The sooner we get out of here, the sooner we can find out where I need to go, and the sooner we can get there.
This brought up another important point: I hadn’t actually set the price for my aid. I had just done it without negotiating. Was that okay? Was that how things worked around here? I was used to just doing things when I was asked or if I saw they needed to be done. So naturally, I just did the same thing here.
Oh well. They might not like it, but I’ll get them to help. Maybe I could just get Taga to bully them into doing it.
That made me snicker, which in turn made Heshae look at me and raise an eyebrow. I shook my head and mentally grabbed at the other tangled web in proximity: what in the hell were the overseers up to? There had to be a reason for the delaying tactics.
Heshae had been worried that they were trying to find a way to cut off life support, but Messec said it was nearly impossible for them to break the safeguards. So if it wasn’t to buy more time to cut off this Lifeweaver Nexus thing, then it had to be—
It made more sense the more I thought about it.
Our side is worried about being recaptured, and they need to control engineering to get away. They’re not the only ones who can prioritize their needs. Someone on the other side must have thought the same, or they had planned for this eventuality. They’re waiting us out until someone shows up to reclaim their property.
I snapped back to the active conversation; I had to know if they were thinking the same thing I was. “…knew what had been said in the Gathering Hall, even though she was unconscious at the time,” I heard Heshae say before she turned toward me and asked, “Amelin? Are you able to explain how you knew what happened during your transport to the infirmary?”
I stopped trying to interrupt and thought, It's not a bad idea, but
“When I’m sleeping, I’m not here," I said, “I’m somewhere else, in a place where my magic comes from. That’s where all of our surface thoughts, our emotions, our [dreams] go. But more importantly—”
“DREEM? WHAT IS DREEM?” Taga said, inching closer to me.
Godsdamnit, I thought to myself, Let's get this over with.
Many things separated Humans from other species, but the difference that stood out above all the others was the ability to recall our dreams. A tek might growl or bark in their sleep. An Orval, Tevelish, or Alvi might wake up with a start. Ask any of them to recall their dreams, and you’d end up with confused stares.
Hell, most Humans forgot what happened in their dreams by the time they had breakfast. But the ones that remember, that can truly recall what happened? Those are the ones that can become Conduits.
“They’re… thoughts and images,” I said, “that your brain processes when you’re asleep; like a memory, but different. Most of the time they just happen to you, but some of my people learned how to change them. Then, they learned how to store them. Eventually, they figured out how to connect them to reality. It’s how our magic works.”
Blank stares all around. Ereia blinked once and said, “Can we use these dreams to see into the Nexus?”
I was dubious about that idea. I had never attempted a dive into the Gossamer outside of natural sleep before. I had seen it done with narcotics—it was standard practice to do recon before a foray into the wastes—but it was a skill that was restricted to more experienced Conduits.
“Maybe, but I’ve never tried it before. And I wouldn’t try it with the anima I have left. But—”
Heshae’s shoulders drooped slightly, but the others’ expressions didn’t change much. Rexiel was still out there, so I figured they were just asking to see what other tricks I had.
Taga huffed and said, “YOU HAVE DONE MUCH TODAY. TRY THIS LATER.”
Finally, I could get a word in edgewise and blurted out, “Have any of you thought that the reason we’re being hindered is because they’re stalling for reinforcements?”
Understanding blossomed on their faces, and the silence that followed devoured any talk of dreams. A new conversation took its place; one where even Heshae recommended haste. We needed to get to the Nexus and deal with the stragglers, now.

2024.04.02 19:41 MyCatDoor Concerns about spores in apartment [general]

I have a friend who is going to move into my old apartment with his girlfriend and newborn. I'm scared because I grew in the guest bathroom and bedroom and dehydrated in the kitchen.
In the bedroom I did shoebox tek and I did a regular monotub in the bathroom. I also did most of the harvesting in the bathroom. I think my first flush I let spores drop but otherwise tried to stay in front of that.
I haven't grown in about a year and only grew like two batches with a couple of flushes. By the time they move in it'll be about a year and couple months since l've harvested/dehydrated.
Is there anything I can do to clean up any spores in my apartment? I don't want my friend and his family to get sick.
Those rooms are used daily and l've changed my home AC filter about three or four times since then.
How long does it take for spores to dissipate or will it be fine? I would appreciate a detailed explanation on how spore move/die.

2024.03.21 15:55 hairijuana An explanation of the “takeaway tek”.

Hey everyone, I want to give a brief explanation of what I mean by “takeaway tek” since I recommend it somewhat often.
It’s pretty simple, and commonly used when germinating cactus seedlings. It is easily modified for jewel orchid work.
If you’re like me, you’ve got a bunch of old takeout containers that you just can’t bear to throw away. They are perfect for rooting stem pieces or saving a jewel that might need a little TLC.
Moisten some sphagnum moss, squeeze it out really well (no more water dripping out) and place in the bottom of the container. Tamp it down a bit, set your stem piece or whatever on top of it gently, and cover the container with the top tightly.
Label, date, and wait! This creates a humidity chamber that allows for the remaining nodes to shoot and root without worrying about drying out. Keep out of strong light like a windowsill for this period of time. Open it and check in a few weeks or months and you should see success.
This is a great trick for turning one jewel orchid into a small army of them, without worrying about lab work and such.
Go forth and multiply!

Enjoy.

"MUTE!" Minara Choi exclaims loudly, causing the nearby television to silence itself as she turns in her chair to face the two trouble makers in front of her desk.
Eli doesn't react to the display. He already knew that she didn't really want them here, and the judgmental look on her face as she turns is mostly just a display.
But Marina isn't as experienced as he is. And even as a criminal herself, he doubts she's ever met anyone high up enough in her field of crime to even be within five degrees of separation of the Dragon.
She's nervous.
"The idea of you owing ME a favor is honestly the only reason I've allowed this meeting Eli." She says flatly. "But holy hell why should I stick my neck out for the two most valuable people in the entire QZ? Do you even know what kind of trouble your partner is in?"
"Speaking of..." Eli begins. "Any news on him?"
Minara takes a deep breath. He's pressing his luck. But she can't blame him.
"Last we heard he was running through the woods like a wild man with some kind of cannon." She admitted. "But that's based on old info. No idea where he is now." She considers how much she should tell him. Then decides to just go for it. "They think there was a Muck Marcher chasing him."
Eli's eyes widen at that. There weren't many of the cyborgs left nowadays, and he couldn't imagine Barcadi leaving her post, especially after the news he'd literally JUST seen on the TV.
If RTI had Muck Marchers on their side.... well that was a whole different level of bad.
"Shit." He said.
"Do you like looking like that?" She asks Marina unexpectedly.
"I... what?" Marina asks in surprise.
"The night sister thing?" Minara specifies. "Do you actually like that, or what?"
"I-" She stammers. "I mean. It's pretty. The Night-kin are cool and all."
"Hmm." Minara replies, unimpressed.
"Lady Choi I don't ask much." Eli interjects, trying to get the meeting back on track. "I simply need somewhere to keep Ms. Smith until this whole thing blows over. All legality aside you and your.... organization are powerful enough and large enough that I doubt even RTI would be willing to try anything if she were in your care."
She turns to him as if looking at something she'd just stepped in.
"As opposed to the entirety of the local PD and QZ-sec?" She asks rhetorically. "And whatever other government agencies are involved at this point."
Eli shrugs awkwardly. It's a fair point.
"They... apparently... have some kind of Muck Marcher variant at their disposal." She says agitatedly as she sips from a mug of coffee on her desk.
"That's... news." Eli admits. "Bad news." He didn't mention how afraid that news made him for his longtime partner.
"So tell me why I should risk going against all of that." She says as she sets the mug back down. "RTI, these thugs, this mystery muck marcher, whatever moles they have in PD and QZ, and who knows what else." She nods at Marina. "Tell me why I should take in this young, wannabe night sister, and protect them from all of THAT."
"Because you knew what it was." Eli said.
Marina AND Minara look at him in confusion at that. Eli just shrugs.
"You knew it was a deity level artifact." He said in explanation. "Maybe not EXACTLY what it was. But you knew enough. And don't try to tell me that a few of your people weren't involved in the smuggling part of it to some level."
Marina's eyebrow rose at that as she looked at the, still rather intimidating, queen of the underground.
Minara, to her credit, just stares at Eli as she takes another deep breath.
"You and yours got her INTO this." Eli said, pressing his luck a bit. "Maybe not intentionally or directly. But you knew what she had. And now you know what it's caused. And your cousin the arch mage is the reason the GATE is gonna be down for a while because HE knew what it was when he saw it." He tilted his head a bit as he remembered the explosive meeting at the precinct. "Damn near blew everyone up getting out of there."
"You knew what I was carrying?" Marina asked, speaking for the first time in a few minutes now.
Minara looks at her, and for the first time since they were escorted into the underground hideout through what Eli now knew was a mage's door, her look softens. Instead of angry judgment, it now looks like pity.
"I did." The elder Choi sibling admitted. "Again, like Eli said, I didn't know EXACTLY... what it was. But I knew that it was big. And the movers who took the commission got a big cut for it."
She left out the part where that meant that SHE got a big cut for it.
"Why'd you pick me?" Marina asked as she realized what all that meant.
Minara shrugged. She may have pitied the young cat. But at the end of the day she still ran a criminal enterprise. Sometimes that meant bad things happening to innocent people to make things happen.
"I... didn't." She admitted. "Personally, I don't handle the smuggling at that level. I have people for that."
Marina was about to say something. She was suddenly angry enough to not care about the older woman's station. But Eli held a hand up and shook his head when she looked at him. She was still angry. But she trusted the detective.
"She's lost everything Minara." He said, using her first name for a change. "And whether you were DIRECTLY responsible or not... you had a hand in it. And you're one of the few people on this side of the gate who can do anything to make up for it." Then in Petravian he added. "[Your family knows more than most what it's like to lose a father.]"
Her jaw clenched as she glared at him. The history of the Choi family was a sore subject regardless of which member you were speaking to. Hell, even unrelated members of governments on both sides disliked being reminded of the follies that had revolved around the controversial "Summoned Hero" nearly a century before. Or the resultant chaos caused by his and his brother's offspring, the least of which was matriarch of the criminal organization he was currently entreating with.
"[Pretty low blow for someone who hides their heritage just to get by with Earth humans.]" She replied icily. "[And who abandoned his family's trade in favor of serving Earth laws.]"
Then Eli switched over to his family's tongue.
"[The path through the forest exists only because it has been trod. But that does not mean you must walk on it.]" He said in Old World Elvish, a language that predated even Petravia.
Marina knew SOME Petravian. Enough to maybe order lunch or ask for directions if she needed while in the inner zone. But not enough to know why the air had seemed to chill from the few exchanged sentences. And she definitely didn't know any Elvish.
Nor did either of them miss the way some of the workers buzzing around the room had halted at the exchange, and seemed to be watching Eli more actively now as the silence between the three of them seemed to stretch on.
"It's the least you could do." Eli said finally. "Give her a couch to crash on and a few hard bodies to keep her safe. Only for a few days. A week or two tops. Then when this is all wrapped up and we've got some people in cuffs, you can send her on her way, and I'll owe you a big favor."
Minara simply stared at him in annoyance for several long seconds.
"Was that that stupid parable of the paths or whatever?" She asked with annoyance in a mocking tone. "I swear, every judgmental Elf I meet recites that shit at some point."
Eli looked over at Marina, who was looking at him with confusion.
"It's a good saying." He said with a shrug.
"It's goddam fortune cookie bullshit." Minara Choi spat back. "But fine. Whatever." She pointed at Marina. "You got spare clothes? Of course you don't." She said before Marina could even answer." Then she looked back at Eli. "Any other EEEEAASSSY favors I can do for you SUSPENDED Detective?"
Eli winced, because somehow she'd known that he was going to ask for more. And... he was going to ask for more.
"Any way your people could get me through one of the Gates and into Petravus?" He asked with a pleading look.
Minara Choi looked at him with silent amazement at the sheer balls on the Half-Elf.
"You're kidding right?" She asked.
Then she waved and a couple of the people moving about came over and began ushering Marina over to a large wall of black scales on the other side of the room.
"I need to follow the artifact." Eli replied easily. "I need answers so I can figure out why RegTek wants it so bad. And it's over there with your cousin and uncle."
"Ancestor!" Minara shouted over her shoulder. A pair of dark voids opened in the wall, causing Marina to halt mid step. "Check her. And if she passes then get that garbage makeup off of her and put her in some clothes that actually fit." She instructed her workers.
"And yes." Eli said before she could. "I know the odds of them letting me anywhere near it are almost zero. But I still gotta try. And if you won't get me over there then my only other option is to break quarantine.... and my orders, find my way into zone one and see if I can track Murphy down." He took a deep breath. "And hope like hell he hasn't been killed by or abducted by a Muck Marcher that apparently works for RTI."
She stared at him for several long moments, her lips pressed into a line as she chewed on the insanity of either notion from someone who was essentially out of resources and in what might as well have been enemy territory.
Slowly, she began to nod as she bit her lower lip and cursed under her breath.
Eli watched as she stood up and began to grow in size. The red robe she'd been wearing tore as she turned into her massive dragon form and stomp away.
"Goddam gen one bullshit." She said in a rumbling basso as she began stomping away.
Behind her, Marina managed to look away from the already terrifying drake that had been sniffing her and her eyes bulged as she saw an actual dragon as well.
Neither of these creatures was even supposed to exist on Earth, much less right here in front of her. The fear was enough that she jumped when the massive black drake licked the side of her face.
"Somebody see if they can get this idiot to the SoCal Gate" Minara Choi yelled from the room she'd stomped off into.
Eli was being swept into another room entirely before he even realized what was happening.
"THANK YOU!" He shouted over his shoulder. "MS. SMITH DO AS YOUR TOLD! SHE'S NICER THAN SHE PRETENDS TO BE!!!"
Marina was still staring, albeit with only one eye, at the massive black drake as it continued to lick her face from chin to forehead.
I really should've never started smuggling again. She thought. What the fuck is happening?

Did my very first hard question!

I did my very first hard question today. I know this isn't an achievement for most people but as someone who has been struggling to make time for grinding leetcode, this is a good confidence boost
I had been a bit anxious from even trying hard questions as their problem statements sound daunting but since I was learning to apply binary search on optimization problems, I solved this problem using concepts of a previous problem without even realizing that it was tagged in the hard category .
I have been unable to practice a lot of DSA as I'm doing bachelor's in Electrical and Electronics engineering but as I have more interest in the tech side, I wish to pursue a career in Machine learning. But for on campus placements, I need to practice a lot of DSA as well. Juggling between these three is draining so even small progress like this makes me very happy!

2024.02.02 20:31 BenM_Legion Legion Go Update 02.02.2024

Original community forum post here: Legion Go Update 02.02.2024 Lenovo Gaming (US)
Hi All,
Happy Friday. Want to address the Space update from this week and some other hot topics today.
Legion Space (v1.0.2.7)
This was released Thursday night North America time. It included all planned updates such as:
Some further commentary on this:
Installation of BIOS v29
Have seen a few posts/comments about people having issues with the v29 update. Everyone's situation and proclivities are somewhat different but generally:
Most people aren't having any issues and we didn't encounter any issues in beta testing or internal testing but we're doing our due diligence and trying to look into the few reports of failure as much as we can.
Custom TDP
There are 3 adjustments required for full TDP control (sPPT, fPPT, TDP), only one is implemented so far and isn't working properly. We'll get a fix out for this ASAP. The other two will be implemented later for full control. I was going to provide a longer explanation but it's all very technical, and I don't want to confuse anyone. Most users won't care and don't need to care about it but wanted to update those that do.
SD Card Stutter
The beta driver I posted last week seems to have improved the stutter for some people affected by it. There is a further update to that driver which might improve things a bit more (adjusted wake up timing for the reader). I've posted it in the same forum post with a second download link for those interested. If possible, please let me / us know if this is solving or at least improving your issues (for those of you that are having any). Again, this isn't something widespread but want to address what we can for users having performance issues.
Link here: Legion Go RealTek Card Reader Beta Driver 10.0.22631.21370_20231124_WHQL (look for the 2nd download link in the post for the newer driver)
Follow-Ups from Previous Posts
Go-Forward Priorities
The key mapping is planned to come in two waves, wave 1 will include the ability to re-map keys and map to keyboard keys/etc., wave 2 will include per-game key maps. Again this requires a lot of cross functional work and is more resource intensive so appreciate the continued patience.
That's all I have for this week. Given the global holiday schedule there may not be too much to update over the next couple of weeks. If I have anything noteworthy I will provide you all if/as it makes sense, if not there may not be another significant update until I do. We have a lot to work on, add, and optimize.
Thanks for your continued support and interest in the product!

2024.01.25 06:11 DazzlingTap2 Server never enters deeper package C state again after rebooting

EDIT: I have fixed the problem. I hypothesize it was because previously I executed the command with the TV screen on in a desktop terminal and not from SSH. I asked my dad to hard reboot the PC, turn on the TV and execute powertop autotune, and behold, it enters C7 again.
but I cannot comprehend how the presence of a connected display would affect powertop.
Well, it's what happened. Somehow in a distro with desktop env and a connected HDMI display, the display has to be on for powertop to work. I do not understand why, but it's a fix. You can feel free to share my post to other forum/subreddit , maybe others will know better than me about what's going on.

I previously configured a Debian 12 server back in September and the server can enter package C7 state after running powertop --auto-tune. I only access the server via SSH and wireguard since I'm in another province and cannot have physical access. I only reboot the computer during reading week/winter break when I'm on prem to perform periodic updates. And even after rebooting, I manually run powertop and every time and the computer enters C7 no problem. Which indicates all BIOS, software and hardware settings are configured correctly.
However, today I needed to reboot the server remotely via ssh sudo reboot. After rebooting the system never enter C-state higher than C2 after powertop, powertop shows every tunable items as good. It was very strange. I rebooted several times and it's the same issue. I even disabled docker which runs 95% of my services, the system has 0% usage but still stuck at C2. I also installed the package linux-cpupower recommended by internet to check various CPU metric but it was no help solving the problem.
In a perfect world, I would boot into my Live Linux USB and reverify my BIOS settings. However, I probably won't have physical access for many month and had to rely on my parents for physical debugging. I highly believe there is something wrong with my software/CPU settings in this system, it would not be plausible for a simple reboot from terminal to change BIOS settings (since BIOS settings is how other people's CPU are stuck at C2). Other explanation would be ASPM problems, I did not magically add any hardware during reboot that could affect ASPM. I have previously executed the command in the desktop with a TV on rather than in terminal (the server is connect to TV via HDMI for my parents to watch videos), but I cannot comprehend how the presence of a connected display would affect powertop. I suspect the cpupower package could be the culprit but after searching on internet, I've hit many dead ends.
Upon executing powertop --auto-tune, I've come across with message, modprobe cpufreq_stats failedLoaded 0 prior measurements, but I do not remember the last time I used powertop if the error was present, and on Wolfgang's video where ran the command, the same line occurred but powertop worked. Searching modprobe cpufreq_stat leads to a dead end.
My computer is Intel QTJ2, Asus B150M-A/M.2, 2x8GB RAM, Adata SP600, Samsung 970 Evo, WD Red Plus, RealTek RTL8111/8168/8411.
I will attach the output and attempts and failures to solve this problem in this detailed pastebin.
Does anyone know is going on and why c state randomly stop working after reboot like this? And what kind of kernel, software and CPU configuration do I need to fix this problem? Or are there other subreddits or forums that can be resourceful to solve my problem? I'm out of options and can't figure out why. Thank you all.
