Happiness is 320 Miles of Time When Traversing a 266 Mile Dead Zone

Not 92 outside...it was 75.
Picked up the new Blazer EV RWD in Trinidad Colorado where I had the bag man meet me to exchange my 17 Jeep Grand Cherokee for the Blazer EV RS.
I then drove south to Albuquerque making one stop at Wagon Mound New Mexico at Electrify America where I met a gentleman with a 17 Bolt. How classic, two Chevy's at the charging station.
Bye Bye Miss American Pie...
Saying goodbye, I headed on south to my destiny.
Can't Find My Way Home
(This photo may or may not have been taken in New Mexico)
I knew I needed to have a full charge to make it home in El Paso after Albuquerque. For there is this dead zone, as I call it, to where there are only two towns with individual, one company, charge stations. Because in New Mexico I've discovered that when there is only one company with two outlets in a town, it's a crap shoot if they even work; and usually they don't.
So off I went. To be clear, I have never done this particular route before, I then loaded up the juice. Picture above at 100% and an erroneous outside temperature of 90 degrees.
Facts
Keep in mind, the actual distance is 260 miles as the crow drives down I25. I dutifully checked with Google Maps in the car for reassurance. It calmly stated that I would have -25% upon arrival at my destination.
WTF
I decided upon leaving Albuquerque to keep it slow and set the ACC to 70, instead of 75 mph, or the 80mph I would do in my former Jeep Grand Cherokee which I had traded in in previous trips, and wisely put myself in the right lane.
100 miles
I attempted to charge in a small town, roughly 100 miles in, named Socorro at a Charge Point and it was no bueno due to, it being unable to charge my card; nice.
Travel On
So, I steeled on and skipped attempting to charge at Truth or Consequences. I took the Consequences and drove on.
At times I would drop to 68 and then at one section of the road decided to follow a semi who was going between 68 and 62mph. I ACC'ed him with three bars in the background of his rig and enjoyed the night as it passed by. I think I pissed him off after a while and he seemed to slow down to get me to pass...to which I did for I was close enough to Las Cruces at that time.
One Last Chance at Love
I made it to Las Cruces roughly 50 miles left, which did have chargers, but decided to again roll the dice. For it said I had ~80/90 mile range on 50 miles left.
Luck is a Lady tonight...
The last 40 miles were uneventful, and I made it home with ~40 miles left to spare.
Sister EUV and Blazer EV
Moral of the story: 70mph on the highway with 320-mile range on a 260 trip was only off by 30 or so miles. White knuckle it people. Don't be afraid and take the plunge....

2024.04.29 05:53 Sooo-tired Holding my direct deposit

I am out of the US traveling. My iphone was stolen and lost access to all my banking. I have 2 direct deposits each month into chime. I then transfer to Revolut to change to Euros. Each deposit puts money into checking, savings and credit builder. Chime verified I was the account holder but said since it was an emergency they would transfer $1000 to my checking and would turn my card back on but would not give me access to my savings of several thousand. The money has been in the account for months. Can they do this? What do I do?

2024.04.29 05:02 DesperateMarketing77 (long) Success Story: Manifested Dream Job using Affirmations

Hi all, I hope this post finds you in a place of ease and trust that things are working out for you, and if not, I hope that it will motivate you to use affirmations (or whatever tools work best for you) to find yourself there again!
I want to share a little success story that I manifested recently that I hope can motivate anyone who is struggling in their 3D reality and are having doubts in the law of assumption or the power of our own minds. I know success stories have been very helpful to me, so I am happy to share a victory for anyone it may inspire!
So, a little backstory: I have been attempting to manifest my SP back for a while now, but there has been a ton of internal resistance because our circumstances appear so bad and there is so much pain in the old story. A couple months ago, I decided to focus more of my attention onto manifesting money instead. This is because I was feeling quite frustrated in my SP manifesting abilities and money has always been fairly easy for me to attract because I have way less attachment and resistance to it.
One of my first powerful experiences with the law and money was a couple years ago when I decided I wanted to manifest $7k (I had recently read You Are A Badass at Making Money, and wanted to test out my ability to attract a certain number that felt believable, and 7 is my lucky number). Only a couple weeks after I decided I made this amount of money, affirmed for it sometimes, and imagined I saw it in my bank account......my car blew up. Literally, I was babysitting and we walked outside and saw that the entire car was in flames. Apparently, it was due to an engine design flaw (beware of Hyundai and Kia models 2011-2013). Long story short, my insurance ended up giving me a check of exactly $7,700 for the car. I was about to make a big move across the country, and the family member I was going to live with had an extra hybrid car I could use, so I didn't even need to use the money for a new car. I love this story because it is such an example to me that the universe is giving you everything you want, and even when the circumstances SEEM terrible (I was devastated at first), things are always working out in your favor.
Now, a couple months ago, I started to affirm that I make $5k a month. That may not sound like a lot, but it was a solid start as an improvement from the $3.5k I was making. Jerry Hicks has said to put your basket far enough that you are excited if you make the shot, but not too far that you don't believe you will make it, which I really resonate with.
My only tool was robotic affirming "I make 5k a month" consistently throughout the day, and imagining myself making that amount of money. I kid you not, the next week, my manager approached me and said that I don't make as much as I should be. She said she would try and advocate to our boss that I get a raise to $4,500 a month. With the part-time job I work (which is another passion job I manifested), that would put me at exactly $5,000 a month! I was like...wow, this really works FAST. Well, my boss declined and said I only deserve to get an additional $500 a month. I was super disappointed and doubted if this truly worked after all.
Well, fast forward a couple months, and I realize after my manager quits that I absolutely need to leave this job because of how toxic this boss is. I write my list out of everything I am looking for in a job: an environmental and inspiring cause, preferably nonprofit, hard-working and kind team, remote, paid travel, and....at least $5k a month. A week after I make the decision that I NEED to leave my current job, my sister sends me a posting about a job with ALL OF THESE QUALITIES on the list + more. I am recently out of college and don't have extensive professional experience, but they were looking for the exact qualifications I had. It all came to me.
I had even made a trust fall into the universe and quit my current job without a backup plan, because I knew no matter what I had to get out of this toxic job.
But honestly, as soon as I saw that the pay was exactly $5k, I knew I had it in the bag. It felt like a little secret joke that the universe and I were exchanging, which is how I believe manifesting should feel. Despite the fact that I was concerned I was under qualified since it is such a great position, I passed through the round of 3 interviews and they all went incredibly well.
I just signed my contract today :)

A fun aside: A cherry on top of it all happened this afternoon, which felt like the ultimate wink from the higher self and what has compelled me to share this with you . Since I've manifested the offer for this job, I have been so impressed by my own power that I have been keeping my mental diet CLEAN CLEAN (as possible, we aren't perfect and it takes repetition to change old neural pathways). One of my favorite affirmations has been "I am living in my dream reality" or "I am living my dream life", and then I go about my day, repeating this to myself when I need to redirect my focus, but most importantly gently allowing the feeling I would have if I was doing this action and I felt like my life was whole, I am thankful, lucky, or whatever feeling I would embody in that moment in my ideal reality. As I am doing this in a cafe last week, I see a raffle to win a free spa and skincare treatment day. I am already feeling so lucky and thankful, I decide to sign up, and low and behold, I win.
After the amazing and fun skincare treatment this afternoon, the woman passes out to each of us....cards of affirmations! She says: "Now, we have just pampered you physically, but I also know the importance of taking care of your mind, and the power of our thoughts in changing our lives. Each of you will pick a card, and I truly believe that is the message you are meant to hear today." Wow.
The affirmation card I picked says: "I'm courageous and I stand up for myself", with the back stating "Know your worth and don't allow others to make you feel any less. Their opinions are just that: opinions."
This was EXACTLY what I needed to hear, as I have recently been horribly treated by three of my closest friends and blocked by all of them without being given a reason. I have been very hurt by this, knowing that I manifested it but not understanding how or why, but I can now see that this is just the bridge of incidents to something greater.....probably, not defining myself through the opinions of others and finding better friends.
This has been one of the hardest and darkest years of my life for a multitude of reasons, and I KNOW it was because of a deeply negative spiral I had in my own thinking. I also now know that this darkness will soon all feel worth it, as it has forced me to find the light of my own consciousness through the power of pure awareness paired with my imagination and positive thinking.
If you have also been going through a dark time, I hope this post inspires you to know your own power, and watch your thoughts! Make it fun (it feels good to think nice things!), but also be gentle with yourself in the process. My biggest challenge has been forgiving myself for all the seemingly horrible and unfortunate circumstances I have manifested in my life the last year, but as Bashar says, everything is inherently neutral. If you give it a positive meaning, you can only receive a positive result.
Next step, using this newfound wisdom to manifest my SP and creating music :)
As a kid, I remember telling my dad "I know the universe is speaking to me", because it was soo easy and fun for me to read the signs it was using to communicate to me about my questions and desires. I now know that it was and is ME speaking to ME, as Neville says, there is only one I AM and your infinite self is that I AM.
So from You to You, and Me to Me, you got this, you will receive your desires, and things are always working out for you no matter how they seem.
Life is meant to be fun, so I hope you can have fun with it all too!

USD/JPY: Japan was just given every excuse to trigger BOJ intervention. April 29, 2024
By : David Scutt, Market Analyst
  • USD/JPY spikes above 160, the highest level since 1990
  • Move was not driven by rate differentials with US Treasury markets closed
  • The move looks speculative, a potential trigger for the Japanese government to instruct the BOJ to intervene in FX markets
If Japan’s Ministry of Finance (MOF) was looking for a trigger to instruct the Bank of Japan (BOJ) to intervene in currency markets, they were just provided a big one. Because out of nowhere, on a public holiday in Japan, USD/JPY just suddenly spiked over 1%, seeing it briefly trade above 160 for the first time since 1990, taking out a key topside level.

USD/JPY spike driven by speculative forces

While USD/JPY upside is not unusual, what makes this move different to others is that it was not underpinned by any significant shift in fundamentals. US Treasuries are not trading due to the public holiday in Tokyo meaning the key driver of USD/JPY – ballooning yield differentials between the US and Japan – did not contribute to upward thrust. Nor was there any significant change in risk appetite in Asia which is broadly a continuation of what was seen in Europe and North America on Friday.

And a deliberate attempt to bring an official policy response

No, the move looks entirely speculative. And, if I’m we’re honest, a deliberate attempt from a party or parties to bring the MOF from the sidelines. Suzuki, Kanda and other senior Japanese government officials have been warning for months about taking action to quash speculative movements. If they don’t instruct the BOJ to intervene following today’s abrupt bounce, when will they ever?
Traders should now be on heightened alert for this risk.

Key near-term USD/JPY levels

After 160, the next topside level for USD/JPY is 165. On the downside, USD/JPY has been supported on dips below uptrend support dating back to early April, including a suspected “market check” from the MOF last Friday. The low of 155 hit then is the first level for traders to watch with 152 the next major level after that.

2024.04.29 04:37 MatterOk8855 Denied boarding with Nexus

Wondering if anyone has a definitive answer for me. My son and I both are American citizens with American passports, and we live near the Canadian border in Washington state so we each have a Nexus card. It’s much closer and easier to fly from Vancouver, BC, than it is from Seattle, so when I can, I do that — which means sometimes I’m flying from Seattle to New York, but returning New York to Vancouver, etc. Vancouver, BC is a “Global Entry/Nexus” hub, and I’ve flown into/out of BC a few times using Nexus and I’ve never had an issue, but I’ve always had my passport on me as well. Last week I flew from Vancouver to meet my son who studying in Washington DC, and booked return tickets to Vancouver, and I forgot he’d flown from Seattle to DC, so he didn’t have his passport with him. He did have his Nexus Card, though, and the airlines let us board the first leg of the flight with just the Nexus card. When we switched to the second leg, though, from Minnesota to Vancouver, the gate agent said that you could not enter Canada via air without a passport, and denied my son entry on to the plane. It ended up taking us two days, a hotel room at Mall of America and a lot of wasted time to get home, and we had to switch to flying into Seattle. No one at the airline could give me a correct answer on whether you are allowed to fly into Canada with a Nexus card, and they all said, “You should just travel with your passport anyway,” which sort of negates the whole purpose of a Nexus card. This was Sun Country Airlines, and I got the feeling that the real answer is that their software doesn’t have a place to input a Nexus card so they can’t make it work, which is different from, “It’s illegal.” I can’t go back and fix things and I wi make sure everyone I make reservations for has their passport in the future, but I’d like to know what the actual law/policy is.

2024.04.29 03:34 murplepanda Recommend me a card, I feel stuck. I don't really Travel

Current cards:
FICO: 800 (Discover, I think Transunion)
Oldest CC account: 9 years
CC approved in past 6 mo: 4
CC approved in past 24 mo: 4
Income $220,000
OK with category-specific cards: YES
OK with rotating category cards: NO
Monthly Spending:
No business cards.
I'm planning to add: Amex BC Preferred for 6% groceries + streaming.
After that, is there anything else I could add that would help, or am I pretty much done?
I very rarely fly, so generally team cashback. I do drive to see my family once a year and stay at little BnBs along the way (two nights each way). I like the freedom of booking direct, I do not want to book through portals.

2024.04.29 02:27 Lower_Comfortable_33 Trying to see if I should add additional credit…

Good evening my fellow reddit mates, just wanted some insight on if I should add additional credit to my already small credit portfolio. I hold at the time a Bank of America platinum card with a 1000$ limit and quicksilver capital one card with a 1300$ limit, I’ve had both cards for about 14 months a year in some change to say, my payment history is a 100% I keep my utilization right below 3%. I pay my credit card balance off right before the closing dates of each one to keep the utilization to almost non existence, with all this being said they are throwing offers at me like crazy, I’m very discipline with money,I have no debts at all,no car payment, my monthly bill’s total run about 800 a month give or take, I make about 65k a year my thing is I ran into a situation where I wanted to use my credit cards for a purchase but I had to keep paying of the balance as where it force me to use my debit card, 2300$ credit limit doesn’t seem to be that much when I’m using them for basically everything racking up the points, but basically I just wanted to give some insight on me as a individual using credit so u guys could have a better understanding. Should I get another card or any additional credit? If so which cards would u guys recommend for a rookie like myself? Thanks and have a nice day…..

2024.04.29 02:08 Wide_Ad928 Found an archived forum discussion from January 19 2002

I was reading an archived discussion from Jan 19, 2002 between 2 people https://groups.google.com/g/alt.true-crime/c/7vKmy74gv9o/m/zNZXsyiWcdgJ and the 3rd post down (you have to click on each header to expand the text) links to an article written By ROBERT GAVIN on Saturday, October 20, 2001. He writes key details which coincides with the surveillance cameras in century 21 as seen on unsolved mysteries of her in the women's jacket / coat department & also 1 detail that is different from what people today are saying what she brought.
"Dr. Lieberman said he and his wife, despite their hectic schedules, managed to spend a day together on Sept. 9, and the two just lounged around. She talked about buying a winter coat."
I wonder if their conversation on Sept 9th was her already buying a winter coat or planning to buy a winter coat ? because on Sept. 10th on the surveillance camera footage you can see her in the Century 21 women's jacket / coat department. Aside from her shoulder purse you can also see her holding a large store basket it seems ? with items in it, so I wonder if she could of have exchanged / returned the coat she already purchased if that was part of the discussion Sept 9th with Ron ?
"By tracing an American Express credit card, Dr. Lieberman learned that his wife shopped at Century 21, a department store next door to the World Trade Center. She made two purchases in the store, including lingerie, panty hose and shoes. The total amount spent was around $550."
I wonder where he got panty hose from ? or did he just forget to write bed linens ? and two purchases is very specific, I can see panty hose being on 1 receipt with either lingerie or with just the shoes as that item kinda fits in both categories / department.
"When Dr. Lieberman came home Monday around 11:15 p.m., he noticed his wife was not home and that there were no shopping bags there, either. He said he assumed his wife slept at the nearby home of her brother, John Philip, 26, or at the home of her cousin, Anu Rice, 33, who lives in Brooklyn. He said his wife may have not called home for fear of waking him. He said he was not overly concerned at this point."
Does anyone remember how close her brother lived to the Century 21 department store ? I wonder if it started to pour and rain down hard, that it was just more convenient for her to get to his place quicker then to go back to her home and not get soaked from the rain ? But then this scenario would always have me leaning towards foul play from her brother from their tumultuous relationship from the police report accusations which til this day doesn't really makes sense to me as to why the police would make that up ??? Her cousin Anu / Anne seems very poised in the Unsolved Mysteries interview, I just can't see her doing anything nefarious to Sneha.

Saturday, October 20, 2001 By ROBERT GAVIN
Somewhere beneath the tons of soot and twisted metal that used to be the World Trade Center are the answers to thousands of missing persons cases in New York City.
But a short distance away, no one can seem to explain the disappearance of Battery Park City resident Dr. Sneha Ann Philip.
The 31-year-old physician at St. Vincent's Medical Center in West Brighton vanished the evening of Sept. 10 -- one day before a terrorist attack leveled the Twin Towers. Still unknown is whether Dr. Philip fell victim to the Trade Center tragedy, was kidnapped, suffered amnesia, or somehow found safety.
More than five weeks later, authorities remain tight-lipped about their investigation into the physician's mysterious disappearance. "If she was just lost, we would have closed the case by now," said one law enforcement source familiar with the investigation, adding only that investigators are pursuing a number of leads and have not ruled out foul play.
Relatives of Dr. Philip say they have scoured the city looking for clues and have even hired private investigators.
"I know something happened to her," said her mother, Ansu Philip, in a telephone interview from her home in upstate Hopewell Junction. She said her daughter was deeply in love with her husband of 18 months, belonged to a tight-knit Indian family, and would never simply run off. "If she's anywhere in this world alive, she would call me. That's the way she is."
Mrs. Philip fears her daughter, who she said looks "Middle Eastern" and was shopping next door to the skyscrapers the night she vanished, might have encountered terrorists scoping out the Trade Center on the eve of the disaster. Neither the mother nor police have revealed any concrete evidence to support this scenario, however.
Or perhaps the missing doctor ventured to the chaos at the Trade Center on Sept. 11 to help those suffering, and when the buildings collapsed Dr. Philip became trapped like so many others.
But the person closest to her says only a positive DNA test on remains pulled from the rubble would make him accept that theory.
"My wife did not work in the World Trade Center and she had no business being there," said Dr. Ron Lieberman, 32, who works at Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx. "The hope and the effort is she wasn't by the World Trade Center and something else happened to her that we can't explain."
The last time Dr. Lieberman said he saw his wife was around 11:30 a.m. on the day she disappeared. A hospital spokesman at St. Vincent's Medical Center said the last time Dr. Philip came to work was Sept. 9.
Dr. Lieberman described his wife as a gentle and creative woman, someone who is a serious painter of pastels when she is not working as a doctor. Photos of the slender, dark-haired, olive-skinned woman, who is 5 feet 7 inches and weighs 115 pounds, have circulated on fliers and the Internet, even making their way onto network television.
"Anything is possible," her husband said. "The sky is the limit with what the possibilities are."
Relatives worry that mass destruction at the Trade Center initially slowed the police department's progress on the case, allowing the trail to grow cold.
Beyond hiring private investigators, Dr. Lieberman said he went so far as to ask cops to investigate him in the case, if that would speed the probe. "Of course the husband is someone you have to check out, but if you can get past that point, at least they're working," he said.
And Dr. Philip's younger brother outright lied on television, saying she was in the Trade Center, just to get her story out, the husband explained.
"It's a desperate situation and they wouldn't talk to us," Dr. Lieberman said, admitting he encouraged his brother-in-law to make up the story.
For the past two weeks, family members have pressured investigators to follow up on a lead that a shoe saleswoman for Century 21 near the Twin Towers claims she saw Dr. Philip shopping with another Indian woman with short black hair. Oddly, this description does not match any of her friends, according to Dr. Lieberman.
Police would not confirm the existence of this lead. Meanwhile, Dr. Lieberman wants police to compare the description with their list of missing persons to try and find out more about the mystery shopping companion. He said he reviewed surveillance tapes from the store and spotted his wife shopping, but she was alone.
"There's nothing I won't do to find her," Dr. Lieberman said.
Dr. Lieberman and his wife met six years ago through mutual friends, when both were students at Chicago Medical Center. He was from Los Angeles, while she was a native of Kerala, a state at the southernmost part of India. She was brought to America as a 4-year-old with her family, and grew up in Albany.
They were engaged in Florence, Italy, and nearly eloped after visiting the Gardonza Castle outside the medieval in Tuscany. But red-tape sent them back to New York to plan their nuptials -- a ceremony so beautiful it was featured in a wedding magazine.
Dr. Lieberman said he was in the process of planning a surprise trip to the Italian castle for his wife's 32nd birthday on Oct. 7 when she disappeared.
As a married couple the two first lived in the Gramercy Park section of Manhattan, where Dr. Philip completed her first two years as a medical internist at Cabrini Medical Center. In July, she was assigned to do her third year residency in the internal medicine rotation at St. Vincent's, West Brighton, prompting the couple to rent an apartment in Battery Park City. Dr. Lieberman said it was a convenient place live, offering equidistant commutes. He traveled north to work in the emergency room at Jacobi Medical Center, while she hopped a boat to Staten Island.
Dr. Lieberman said he and his wife, despite their hectic schedules, managed to spend a day together on Sept. 9, and the two just lounged around. She talked about buying a winter coat. At one point, she arranged some orchids which he photographed, he recalled.
Dr. Lieberman retraced his wife's activities on the last day he spent with her:
On Monday, Sept. 10, they ate breakfast together in their neighborhood. She was wearing a brown one-piece shirt-dress, buttoned down the front, and brown loafers. She seemed "very happy," he recalled. "I told her I loved her and I gave her a big hug and a kiss. I said, 'I'll see you later tonight.'" They parted for the day, he for work, she to do some shopping.
At about 11:30 that morning, he rode the No. 5 subway train to Jacobi Medical Center. Later that day, around 5:15 p.m., security cameras in Battery Park City captured his wife leaving the couple's apartment, a purse in her hand.
By tracing an American Express credit card, Dr. Lieberman learned that his wife shopped at Century 21, a department store next door to the World Trade Center. She made two purchases in the store, including lingerie, panty hose and shoes. The total amount spent was around $550.
When Dr. He said he was not overly concerned at this point.
The next morning, Sept. 11, when his wife still had not come home, Dr. Lieberman's concerns grew. He went to work at 6:30 a.m., but figured his wife was still likely at her cousin's home.
At 8:45 a.m., the first hijacked jet hits Tower 1 of the World Trade Center. Dr. Lieberman watches the horror unfold on a hospital television and prepares for an onslaught of patients at Jacobi. He called home twice and left messages for his wife on their answering machine.
Later that day, he tried to volunteer at Saint Vincent's Hospital downtown, but is not needed. Dressed in surgical scrubs, he borrows a friend's bike and makes his way to a soot-covered Battery Park City. He finds no evidence that his wife ever returned home. He also learns that she has not spent the night with family or even contacted her mother -- an extremely unusual occurrence because the two are so close. At this point, he is "really getting nervous."
No one has seen or heard from her since.
"It's a nightmare. It's a 24-hour nightmare," said Dr. Lieberman, who cannot afford to live in Battery Park City alone and is planning to move in with his in-laws.
"You just cannot fathom what's going on. This is the hardest thing in my life I've ever had to deal with. This is all I do for the last the last three weeks, just try to figure out where the hell my wife is."

2024.04.29 01:32 PizzaWhole9323 I need some advice from other house sitters/gig workers.

Hello boys and girls I am new here. I took my first job last week. And I think it’s going to hell already. In summary a family from the Midwest is moving to Tucson. They need somebody to be at their house while their stuff gets shipped in and do some grocery shopping before they get here on May 5. I was fine with that. Probably should’ve gotten something in writing but I didn’t because I was being too trusting in life. Fast forward to last Saturday and I got a check for $2000But I put in my business account, and then I took a picture of the receipt and send it to my client like they asked. All was well up to this point. Now the shippers are going to be there Tuesday, but my Bank takes up to five days to process out of state checks. They now want as soon as the check clears hopefully Monday, me to go get three $500 Apple cards to pay the movers with on Tuesday. Does this seem shady as hell? Because I’m about to tell them to stuff it, and then send them back a cashiers check for the full amount which would include what would’ve been my fee. Feel free to ask me any questions I’m just in the weeds here and I’m looking for some advice. Sorry if I accidentally posted on the wrong sub in advance. Update: I called the Bank Of America fraud department, and spoke to a lovely lady named Carolyn who indeed told me that it is a scam and the check is fake. And to have no contact with the scammers again and that the bank is going to take care of the funds. It doesn’t look like my account was breached. And I just want to say an absolute thank you to everybody who helped me confirm my suspicions that this was a scam. You are all great in my book.
Update 2: Turns out I was in the wrong place! job bid came from housesitters.com.

2024.04.29 01:32 BomBomBomiAndeyo Sungkyunkwan Language Institute Regular Korean Program

I recently won a scholarship and roundtrip to a session (2 months approx) of summer language learning at Sungkyunkwan Language Institute and was wondering if anyone has had any experience with the program. It seems like there is a field trip included as well as complementary courses on kpop, taekwondo etc. The classes are 260 min/day from Mon to Friday.
Additionally, SLI students don't get dorms but SKKU seems to have a partnership with AIRD for living accommodations for international students. Does anybody have any experience with AIRD? I was also curious about what living accommodations to go for for 2 months. Airbnb seems like a popular option but opinions on reddit seem divided. I want something safe but also not too expensive (max 800 USD/month I guess?) I want to travel and buy gifts, makeup, gadgets etc since this will be my first time so I do not want to break my bank too much on living accommodations and budget for other things too. Any suggestions for 2-month long living accommodations are welcome.
On another note, has anybody worked/volunteered as a paid/unpaid research assistant in Seoul? There is a 'cold-emailing' culture in North America when you want to work with professors in STEM but I am curious if South Korea has the same culture. I am also interested in finding out more about the STEM research in SK since I'm involved in that myself (I am an undergrad if that matters) and wondering if I should email STEM professors from SKKU to volunteer at their labs. I reckon I will have some extra time in my hands since I plan to be in SK for 2 months but I do not know what the time commitment expectations are from volunteer RAs in Seoul Universities. If anyone has any suggestions about this, it will be much appreciated.
Lastly, if the program starts on July 1st, how long in advance should I arrive in Korea to wrap my head around things like, getting a SIM card, a public transport card, travelling via public transport etc? Thanks!

2024.04.29 01:11 Sea-Sympathy5350 Six Degrees To Revenge

To start with my revenge plan you need to know the movie premise of Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon. This will be a large part of my revenge, but first you need a bit of information to see how I got here. I’m what they call a white hat hacker, simply put I hack into corporate internets and invade their systems. This was my job and I love it. I was paid by several corporations to test, find weak access points and fix them. My story started as a 7-year-old, that’s when I was introduced to my first PC. By age 11 I was learning code. By the time I was 15 I figured out how to access most company internal web servers. This was good and bad, good was my excitement when I made my first intrusion, bad was when I got caught for it. My first hack was a local bank, I got into their system and looked around. Then to see if I had the ability to change data, I moved a decimal on an account and verified that it took. Next was to change it back immediately and exit from the site. I never wanted to cause harm, just check out what access I had. A week later there were no signs that my intrusion had been discovered, and I felt more at ease. Well, that was short lived, there was a knock on the door as I was having my afternoon snack after school. When I opened it there were two men standing there in black suits.
I asked what I could do for them when they asked me if I was Jason Hopes. I replied with a look of shame and said yes. They pulled out their credentials, The first man proudly showed me his FBI badge and ID card confirming his identity. Then I looked at the other mans ID and it was without a badge but showed an ID from CISA, Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. I knew from the moment I read the badges I was in trouble. I thought to myself, “well I guess my first hack would be my last. As they entered my home they asked about my parents. I responded that they were at work. They immediately stopped asking me questions and requested my parent’s phone numbers. I told them my dad was out of town on business, as I was shaking uncontrollably. My world was starting in a descent that I just couldn’t stop. The FBI agent called my mother and said something, I was too far away to hear him. He hung up and returned to us and said your mom will be here in 20 minutes and our discussion should wait for her arrival. Now I was terrified for my life or even my future at home when my mom returns home to find out what I had done.
When my mom arrived, they talked with her in private before returning to the living room. I was then told how my hack caused their response, they said they understood I didn’t steal anything, but I had breached an FDIC banking system. I asked how they tracked me; they laughed and said your IP and Mac addresses were located on the servers and tracked me from there. I explained I didn’t make any changes, just looked around. The CISA agent said, no son you did more than that, you changed information which triggered an investigation. You changed one account to the tune of 10 thousand dollars, but they admitted that I had changed it back immediately and took nothing. I was about to cry as they said they would monitor my activity until I was 18, if I stayed clear of hacking my misguided activities would be forgiven. They placed an in-line interceptor on my PC which told them everything I did on my PC at home. I was relieved by their attempts to keep me out of jail. I stayed away from doing anything to do with hacking and was cleared when I turned 18, just as they promised. My parents were not happy but were relieved to know I hadn’t stolen anything and ended up forgiving me.
Well, it’s been 15 years since that happened and I have taken my hacking skill in a different direction. As I said before I’m a white hat, I was hired by several companies to test and close all system loopholes of their security. I also continue to write code in my spare time. I had a new program I had just finished that would make malware and viruses in e-mails a thing of the past. My newest program scanned all e-mails prior to delivery and scanned them checking all the attachments before an associate could open them. When the e-mail appeared in their inboxes, It would be shown in red. This indicated to the user not to open any attachments, it would cause harm to their networks. I hadn’t released it yet; I had one reason even though it was ready for wide distribution. My loving wife of 8 years had her secrets. Over the past year she has had three lovers behind my back. She was totally unaware of my knowledge of her extracurricular activities. But I had been planning my revenge for months, to be honest it took me about 10 months to get it completed. I new all the men my wife had cheated on me with, and most of their personal information. I also had a PI gather pictures for my revenge plans. I had written a new program just for this revenge, it was simple and would destroy all the cheating partners involved. I must admit, it was relatively simple but very effective. To begin with I can be spiteful, I didn’t want to share any of my new program’s success with that cheating woman that I had married, and once loved. Our marriage needed to end before I released it, making sure she would see no money from my hard work. All the time was well spent on it, this revenge could or should go down in the history books as an epic revenge story.
First thing was to set up an e-mail, this e-mail started at the top with 3 pictures of my wife kissing each of her lovers. Below was a link to her basic resume, you know, birth date, place of birth, job history, status at her current company without naming it. Next in the e-mail were the three pictures of my wife’s lovers with them walking into hotel rooms. This was my wife’s preference of bedding and her lover’s meeting place. As you clicked on their pictures the same appeared with the information in the same format as my wife’s. With the additional information of their wife’s and children’s names if any, and the length of her affair with each of the men. This in my mind would create enough interest for the need to see more and open any one of the 6 pictures, boom my plan would be set off and running. I sent the e-mail from my account showing in the subject line, People you may know. Being it was from me they most likely would look at it. It was sent to just the 4 of them, my wife and her three lovers. This is where it all started.
I sat back in my chair with a smile on my face and waited. My PC was set on tracking the e-mails as they raced across America. To help you understand my plan better, I had placed into the e-mail a small virus. As soon as you clicked any one of the pictures it sent the virus into motion. The virus was created to send the same e-mail to everyone in their contact lists. Each time it was opened it continued to repopulate the e-mails into the newest recipient’s contacts and so on. I had also placed a tracker to see how it populated, each time the e-mail was opened. I would get a red dot as to the newest sender without their knowledge and with recipient as their name as the new sender, As I watched the red dot appear after the first e-mail was read, I yelled for joy, it was working as expected, but you always have some doubts. But within 10 minutes this e-mail was rushing across America. To my shock my map expanded when the e-mail went to users in Europe and Asia. It just kept going and going. My screen about 2 hours later was redder than the map could handle. It started to just appear as a red blob covering the United States and other parts of the world. I had also built in one last command to kill itself 1 week after the original e-mail was opened. By that time everyone should know of my wife and her lover’s infidelity.
Divorce was one sided, all in my favor. The three lovers were a subordinate of hers and two of her bosses. I sued the company for not following the company relationship guidelines in the office standards of ethics. I received a small, but nice compensation from them and a great split in our marital assets before it was all over. 3 divorces and one ex-fiancé later, my life was ready to move on. I released my virus e-mail scanning program and 4 months later sold it for an undisclosed amount in the mid 7 figure range. My wife and her companions had become well known to the world as well as unemployed; my revenge plan was complete. I moved on to newer programing projects and did my white hat work even though I didn’t need to. To me it wasn’t work, I loved my job, it wasn’t really work at all but fun for me and I really do enjoy it.

2024.04.29 01:01 AutoModerator Weekly Copyright Reminder

This is a weekly reminder post of this sub's stance on potential copyright infringement. This is a serious issue that needs to be kept in mind when creating and listing NFTs.
Original post by u/HurleyBird1
Quick disclaimer: I AM NOT A LAWYER. THIS IS NOT LEGAL ADVICE - THIS IS SIMPLY INFORMATION WITH WHICH TO EDUCATE YOURSELVES AND PREPARE YOURSELF FOR LEGAL ADVICE FROM A LICENSED SOURCE.
Now that that's out of the way. My credentials are: MBA, with a bit of business law classes under my belt.
I want to give a quick explanation of how copyright works - and I'll do so through quick blurbs n some myth/reality bullets.
Source: copyright.gov (US)
  1. Subject matter of copyright: In general28(a) Copyright protection subsists, in accordance with this title, in original works of authorship fixed in any tangible medium of expression, now known or later developed, from which they can be perceived, reproduced, or otherwise communicated, either directly or with the aid of a machine or device. Works of authorship include the following categories:(1) literary works;(2) musical works, including any accompanying words;(3) dramatic works, including any accompanying music;(4) pantomimes and choreographic works;(5) pictorial, graphic, and sculptural works;(6) motion pictures and other audiovisual works;(7) sound recordings; and(8) architectural works.(b) In no case does copyright protection for an original work of authorship extend to any idea, procedure, process, system, method of operation, concept, principle, or discovery, regardless of the form in which it is described, explained, illustrated, or embodied in such work.
- Myth: I can use any image/song/video/writing I want.
- Reality: No. Not true at all.
- Myth: Well they never said it's copyrighted.
- Reality: Upon publication (and even while a work in progress) a work is automatically protected via copyright under US Law.
- Myth: Well they never sold it.
- Reality: It doesn't have to be commercialized to be protected.
- Myth: Well it was a long time ago
- Reality: Possibly true...as long as the creator is deceased (or if multiple creators, the last living one is deceased) and the required time has passed...although this gets tricky with "estates."
(d) Duration of Rights.—(1) With respect to works of visual art created on or after the effective date set forth in section 610(a) of the Visual Artists Rights Act of 1990, the rights conferred by subsection (a) shall endure for a term consisting of the life of the author.
So what's this thing I hear called "Fair Use?"
Straight from the source:
  1. Limitations on exclusive rights: Fair use41Notwithstanding the provisions of sections 106 and 106A, the fair use of a copyrighted work, including such use by reproduction in copies or phonorecords or by any other means specified by that section, for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use), scholarship, or research, is not an infringement of copyright. In determining whether the use made of a work in any particular case is a fair use the factors to be considered shall include—(1) the purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of a commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes;(2) the nature of the copyrighted work;(3) the amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole; and(4) the effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work. The fact that a work is unpublished shall not itself bar a finding of fair use if such finding is made upon consideration of all the above factors.
Uhh...help me translate that please... (here's a decent official translation: https://www.copyright.gov/fair-use/more-info.html)
  1. above...if it's non-profit educational use, you're usually good to go...if it's for money or trade (commercial nature) then you're usually NOT...unless YOUR piece is "transformative"
Transformative uses are those that add something new, with a further purpose or different character, and do not substitute for the original use of the work.
- Myth: Well this is paid for in Algos, not USD so it's not "commercial"
- Reality: IT IS commercial. You could even barter for bacon and it'd be commercial. It's an exchange of one good/service for another good/service.
- Myth: My piece with Batman inside a card is "transformative"
- Reality: No, unfortunately, more-than-likely the courts would say it's not. A good litmus test is..."If Warner Bros Entertainment (owner of Batman) wanted to make an NFT/ASA "Batman card" would yours compete with it or be possibly mistaken (by a reasonable person - so in America think 8th grade education) for real merchandise? Probably...thus it's not transformative enough.
"nature" gets a little tougher. This looks at protecting the "creative process." Thus, using other works of art is less-likely to be protected than using factual sources - like historical photographs since it's easier to "create art" and thus "transform" factual pieces than other art pieces. This is also talking to things like "parody." Satire is NOT protected. "Parody" is. What's the difference? LegalZoomputs it well: While a parody targets and mimics the original work to make a point, a satire uses the original work to criticize something else entirely. Another way to look at it is that satire uses another work as a way to comment on something happening in the world that has nothing to do with the original work.
- Myth: I added a different border, extra planets, and some blur effect to MTZ's World of Light - it's a new piece of art.
- Reality: Not likely the courts will see it that way.
- Myth: This guy added a filter, some burn effects, and collaged a bunch of newspaper headlines together - isn't that a violation!
- Reality: Probably not...the courts would probably see this as a creation of art out of factual sources.
amount/substantiality in relation to the whole...this is where using clips of songs that are only like 5 seconds long works! But using more than that...runs into problems. This is tough to decipher too...as some songs are EASILY identifiable from just 5 seconds (Ice, ice, baby) - and thus NOT fair use. But some aren't. Usually you're safe using a very small clip of a song or video - especially if you're adding more to it. But this is a dangerous game to play - and there's places to get free audio (some sources below)
effect of the use - this is probably the biggest one. Courts will look at simply...does YOUR work affect the sales or potential for sales of the copyright owner. Of note...this is looked at at the time of the issue being brought to the court, not at the time of sale. For example, let's say my batman card sells for 10 Algos today, but Algorand BLOWS UP and soon every NFT is on Algorand. And now my OG Batman NFT is seen as one of the first Batman ones and official. Warner Bros gonna sue the shit outta whoever owns it at the time they sue to get the rights to all sales of that NFT. So that person is left holding an empty bag when Warner Bros wins in court.
- Myth: Well they're not commercializing it NOW so I'm safe.
- Reality: Technically, yea Warner Bros probably won't spend the money to go after the OG artist and the hands the asset passed through...HOWEVER, they may. That's their right. Who knows - the Napster days showed us the lengths companies will go to. EVEN BIGGER HOWEVER, the last person holding it when Warner Bros DOES decide to go after that Batman NFT...uh oh for them - they just lost their asset.
- Myth: Well it's been like a year, and no one has brought up copyright. So I'm good.
- Reality: If this was in a normal market...maybe this argument would work. If McDonald's let you sell a Ronald McDonald poster for like a year on Amazon with no issues, some court may say "bro, you took too long to bring this to us." HOWEVER, with cryptocurrency being so new (and Algorand being so little known/discussed), most courts would see it as "reasonable" that a copyright owner failed to exercise their rights within a year - possibly even a decade. (Updated because I realized last example dealt with trademark not copyright :o)
So what am I safe to use?
US Government works (mostly)...any deemed free to use by creator...and any a copyright lawyer says they have your backs on (cuz now they're liable).
Here's some great sources for free use items (please add to this list below if you know of some!!!):
Pictures: https://buffer.com/library/free-images/ (Unsplash is one of my faves)
Music: https://www.wix.com/blog/photography/2019/11/27/free-music-for-videos/
Video: https://blog.hootsuite.com/free-stock-videos-sites/
You'll notice there's a lot of "shoulds" "coulds" "probably" etc. This is because copyright cases are all unique and go to the courts. The best bet is to go with stuff you KNOW is free and fair-use. If not, I'd look up copyright law, consult supreme court cases concerning copyright, and ultimately, talk to a lawyer.
AGAIN: I AM NOT A LAWYER. I AM NOT PROVIDING LEGAL ADVICE. I AM SIMPLY PROVIDING INFORMATION. THERE MAY BE ERRORS ABOVE THAT COULD CAUSE SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGES - CONSULT A COPYRIGHT ATTORNEY IF YOU WISH TO RECEIVE LEGAL ADVICE.

2024.04.29 00:53 MeRuddy Starting new in beautiful Dallas. Help needed!

Hello Dallas Redditors,
First of all i would like to thank you in advance for giving interest in my post. So please bear with me and sorry for the long post. 🥔
I'm here to request any advice or assistance you can give me as i feel a bit unsure, but before i begin a bit of background:
After long discussions and taking the horse by the reins, my wife and I finally decided to move in the Dallas area from Europe this year. It's a big decision, but I'm sure with all your help we can make it a easier transition.
Any tips, info is highly appreciated.
Also I would like to clarify that both of us have already traveled there in the past 2 years, speak and read English at an advanced level, have green cards, SSN and id's (In my case driver license) , both have higher education degrees, funds to live and buy a car, but unfortunately not jobs laid down.
So with out further ado, let me get started:
  1. I will need to create a BANK ACCOUNT as soon as possible for personal use and for any future bills or taxes i need to pay.
And if possible i would like to understand how does credit score work.
  1. Our current phones and data plan are set for the European (EU) area. Last time we could use our internet but with very bad signal, different payment plan and also we couldn't make calls back home. So this time we will need to buy new phones, create new data plans and also later apply for home internet.
  1. Now one of the most delicate problems out there. HEALTH INSURANCE.
Any tips for things i need to look out for when first getting an insurance?
  1. Renting. Another delicate topic that redditors here can clarify best and address my concerns. Considering we are not looking for any luxurious or to over the top houses with a decent layout i would like to know:
  1. CAR. As i saw on our previous travels thru Dallas, you are incapacitated with out a car. Considering i would also like to try out LIFT or UBER and with a maximum budget of 10k can you please advice:
Again i apologize for the long post. I tried to be as concise as possible and any sort of advice, tips and info is highly appreciated.
Also feel free to ask me anything i need to further clarify.

2024.04.29 00:36 exsapphi On the introduction of barriers

In 2022, Canada gave a 50 homeless people $7,500 in cash. It saved them $8,277 per person in shelter costs.
There isn’t a shortage of social schemes to help people who are struggling. By god, as someone who’s been forced to navigate them recently, there are so many social support organisations that they’ve had to make social support organisations whose only purpose is to help you navigate other social support organisations.
And despite that, it’s still incredibly difficult to find help.
This Canadian study highlights a phenomenon that we are seeing at play in New Zealand politics right now, and that is the introduction of financial controls resulting in reduced access to help for those who need it. It’s nothing new — community services cards are fantastic, but not everyone who is eligible has one. Free prescriptions for low income earners are great, but how many people are going to not go to the effort of updating their income with the government or the health system before they get unexpectedly unwell, and therefore miss out?
But National’s use of this strategy to limit the spending of the disability scheme is perhaps the most overt recent demonstration we’ve had that restricting access to help can be used as a cost-saving measure.
There are many, many problems with this authoritarian approach — for example, spending less on basic social supports for a person will often result in more expensive remedies required for them later. Dental treatment only being publicly funded in emergencies in nz is a good example of this. And it can get even more cost-inefficient, as sometimes the savings across an entire population can actually work out greater than the costs of the more prescriptive alternative.
This Canadian study is an example of that; homeless people who were given cash deposits of $7500 spent so much less time in homeless shelters on average that the state saved more money than it would have spent housing them.
Traditional approaches to addressing homelessness have focused on the provision of emergency services, healthcare, and housing supports. While these programs help prevent more severe forms of homelessness, they do not directly address a core cause: lack of money. Because poverty impairs cognitive function and mental health, cash transfers help address both financial and psychological barriers.
Cash transfers can allow a homeless person to have the freedom to spend money how they want. Just the act of giving them this freedom and security can improve mental and physical wellbeing — imagine the immediate stress relief of being told you suddenly have enough money to feed and clothe yourself for the foreseeable future. That has a real effect.
The study overwhelmingly found that these effects compounded over time; nearly every improvement brought with that money had increasing gains later on.
The analyses suggest that the overall effects were primarily driven by impacts within the first 3 mo after the cash transfer. For example, the benefits in housing stability and spending were immediate, but diminished as the control group eventually gained stability over time.
The cash transfer did not have overall impacts on employment, cognitive function, subjective well-being, alcohol use severity, education, or food security, yet there were some short-term impacts on these outcomes. For example, more cash recipients achieved food security than control participants 1 mo after the cash transfer. Cash recipients also showed higher positive affect at 1 mo, had greater total income, and showed higher accuracy on an executive function task at 3 mo. The only detrimental effect was lower social connection at 9 mo, which could be due to moving to a new housing environment and a new community away from the shelter.
This is because there are barriers created by “supports” that just cannot be overcome in comparison to the freedom of cash. A homeless person is the least-equipped person to travel and call around a number of different organisations in order to ask and apply and inquire for the different types of help available to them. They are very likely to be especially ill-equipped to navigate such a system even before you add in the adverse circumstances of homlessness.
You can lower these barriers by spending more money on more supports, but you never remove them. Cash removes them. You don’t have to locate a shelter or an emergency accomodation provider (most of whom right now are actually full — I don’t know the complete range of overloaded social supports around the country right now, but from personal interactions, there’s frequently no room in domestic violence shelters, rehab facilities, and mental health wards). Cash solves this by getting you a hotel room. You are unlikely to have anywhere near the same level of difficulty finding a hotel room as a free bed in a shelter.
The process of having to apply for help can cause homeless people to lose access to housing. Having to lodge for help with bonds can slow down the process or prevent someone from trying altogether; even just disclosing that this will be needed may cause a landlord to pick someone else. Cash gives the recipient the ability to cover their own bond.
To understand how “false barriers” can be harmful, you either need a lot of experience with that particular situation, or you need a vast and accurate imagination. If you haven’t been homeless, will never be able to predict the issues that may crop up to stump you, and these systems that we external have decided are “good enough” to do the job only create more problems for people.
At the core of the issue is the idea that those receiving help have already failed at self-management, so for money to be spent on them efficiently, it must be prescribed. But this is based on a false belief that this prescription will automatically serve the recipient better, when in reality, as flawed as the money management of a homeless person is, it is still likely to be more efficient and better informed than a series of calculated rules and funds that take into account none of the individual circumstances the person is facing.
It turns out, when you let people determine and meet their own needs, they can be kinda good at it.

2024.04.29 00:25 Obversa Ron DeSantis has declared war on Satanism - as well as separation of church and state, the First Amendment, and the U.S. Constitution

Gov. Ron DeSantis has been at war with Satanism and the Satanic Temple since December 2023.
In December 2023, the Satanic Temple erected a Baphomet display in the Iowa State Capitol in Des Moines for the Christmas season. However, on 14 December 2023, the display was destroyed by Michael Cassidy, a 35-year-old candidate for the Mississippi House of Representatives and a Christian conservative from Lauderdale, Mississippi.
Cassidy, who read about the display on social media, went to the Capitol to destroy it, stating his reasoning for vandalizing the statue: "I grew up in a country that was founded on Christian principles, and in America, that generally promoted good ethics and public displays of virtue. The evil display and the lack of action surprised and offended me as a Christian. People need to stand up for what is right. Satan is evil, and glorifying evil is not an American value."
Cassidy also stated that the Satanic Temple "needed Jesus", and sought to evangelize adherents.
In a further interview with conservative news outlet The Sentinel, Cassidy said, "The world may tell Christians to submissively accept the legitimization of Satan, but none of the Founding Fathers would have considered government sanction of Satanic altars inside Capitol buildings as protected by the First Amendment. Anti-Christian values have steadily been mainstreamed more and more in recent decades, and Christians have largely acted like the proverbial frog in the boiling pot of water. I saw this blasphemous statue, and was outraged. My conscience is held captive to the word of God, not to bureaucratic decree, and so I acted."
Cassidy also cited 1 John 3:8 from the Gospel of John from New Testament of the Bible as his motivating for destroying the Baphomet display: "The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the Devil. Scripture exhorts us to think and act like Jesus Christ."
Despite Cassidy's claims, the Satanic Temple states on its website, "We do not believe in the existence of Satan or the supernatural. The Satanic Temple believes that religion can, and should, be divorced from superstition. As such, we do not promote a belief in a personal Satan. To embrace the name 'Satan' is to embrace rational inquiry removed from supernaturalism and archaic tradition-based superstitions. Satanists should actively work to hone critical thinking, and exercise reasonable agnosticism in all things. Our beliefs must be malleable to the best current scientific understandings of the material world, never the reverse."
The Satanic Temple also denied Cassidy's accusations of "promoting evil", stating, "[We] hold to the basic premise that undue suffering is bad, and that which reduces suffering is good. We do not believe in symbolic 'evil'. We acknowledge blasphemy as a legitimate expression of personal independence from counter-productive traditional norms."
Cassidy was later charged with fourth degree criminal mischief after the Satanic Temple pressed charges; if found guilty, he will face a maximum penalty of one year in prison, and a $2,560 USD fine. He was later charged with a hate crime under Iowa's list of misdemeanors.
The Sentinel subsequently launched a crowdfunding campaign for Cassidy's legal defense fund, and raised $20,000 within three hours, $10,000 of which was donated by conservative campaign group Turning Point USA. Republican presidential candidate and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis also stated on TwitteX that he would donate to the campaign. Overall, the campaign raised over $75,000 for Cassidy's legal defense.
It was announced that Davis Younts, an attorney and retired U.S. Air Force lieutenant colonel, would represent Cassidy in court. Younts stated, "My client [Michael Cassidy] was motivated by his Christian faith to peacefully protest a display that is a direct affront to God. When others, including elected leaders, were unwilling to act, he peacefully removed the display. It is my hope that the citation will be dismissed when my client's actions are understood, and that he will not face prosecution because of his Christian faith."
Kim Reynolds, the Governor of Iowa, released the following statement on 12 December 2023, just two days before Cassidy destroyed the Baphomet display: "Like many Iowans, I find the Satanic Temple's display in the Capitol absolutely objectionable. In a free society, the best response to objectionable speech is more speech, and I encourage all those of faith to join me today in praying over the Capitol, and recognizing the nativity scene that will be on display – the true reason for the season."
Iowa State Representative Jon Dunwell, an ordained minister and Republican, stated on TwitteX, "My observation as a follower of Christ, I certainly find a display from the Satanic Temple objectionable. It stands in direct opposition to my faith, and would be classified as evil...[however], in fairness, many other religions or nonreligious people have the same perspective about Christianity...[and] I don't want the state evaluating and making determinations about religions. I am guided by the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution."
Another Iowa State Representative and Republican pastor, Brad Sherman, disagreed with Dunwell, calling the Baphomet display "disgusting", and arguing that the display was a violation of the Iowa State Constitution.
Sherman stated, "The Iowa Constitution is the supreme law of the State of Iowa, and it establishes the legal foundation upon which all other state laws are built...it is a tortured and twisted interpretation of law that affords Satan, who is universally understood to be the enemy of God, religious expression equal to God in an institution of government that depends upon God for continued blessings. Such a legal view...violates the very foundation of our State Constitution."
Sherman also argued against the separation of church and state in the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, and in favor of Christian nationalism, in the State of Iowa.
DeSantis also joined Sherman in arguing against the separation of church and state in the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, and in favor of Christian nationalism, after recently signing a bill allowing religious chaplains as guidance counselors in Florida public schools on 18 April 2024.
By doing so, DeSantis insisted he was only returning public schools to their "original intent", stating, "It used to be, I mean, when education in the United States first started, every school was a religious school. That was just part of it. Public schools were religious schools. I think what we're doing is restoring the sense of purpose that our Founding Fathers wanted to see in education."
DeSantis' words also echoed those of Iowa State Representative Brad Sherman in a release.
As they have done with other cases involving religion and public schools, the Satanic Temple said it would gladly send chaplains into Florida’s public schools as soon as the new law took effect. These Satanists are not actual Satan-worshippers, even though they have legal status as a church, but rather a secularist group, hoping, in their words, "to provide a safe and inclusive alternative to the religious clubs that use threats of eternal damnation to convert school children to their belief system".
DeSantis fired back. "Some have said that if you do a school chaplain program, that somehow you're going to have Satanists running around in all our schools," he said at a press conference at a high school in Kissimmee, Florida, where he also signed a bill (HB 1317) giving more school access to "patriotic organizations".
"We're not playing those games in Florida," DeSantis continued. "[Satanism] is not a religion. That is not qualifying to be able to participate in this."
In a statement sent after the bill signing, the Satanic Temple indicated that hadn't changed. The legislation takes effect July 1, 2024.
"Despite DeSantis's contempt for religious liberty, the U.S. Constitution guarantees our equal treatment under the law, and DeSantis is not at liberty to amend the U.S. Constitution by fiat, at whim," said Lucien Greaves, co-founder of the the Satanic Temple. "[Ron DeSantis] just invited Satanic chaplains into public schools, whether he likes it or not."
DeSantis' comments contradict the bill's sponsor – Sen. Erin Grall, R-Fort Pierce – who said that because of the First Amendment's religious freedom protections, the school chaplain bill (HB 931) wasn't limiting.
Sen. Grall, though, was concerned about Satanic chaplains: "I think that as soon as we get in the middle of defining what is religion and what is not, and whether or not someone can be available and be on a list, we start to run (into) constitutional problems," she said before the legislation passed.
Yet the fundamental problem remains. The program smashes through the wall between church and school, and it’s patently unconstitutional. The Supreme Court has ruled in cases like 1948's McCollum v. Champaign that public schools could not invite preachers in.
DeSantis seems to be banking on the U.S. Supreme Court's conservative majority to back this norm-breaking law—a safe bet, given the number of court opinions in recent years that have allowed religion into public schools, including a 2020 decision, Espinoza v. Montana Dept. of Revenue, that concluded that leaving religious preachers out of public schools was a kind of "discrimination".

2024.04.29 00:21 CenoteSky Wells Fargo Active Cash visa gave me 2,500 credit limit - is this too low?

Today I applied and was accepted for the Wells Fargo active cash visa credit card as my second line of credit. However, I was only given a $2,500 credit line which surprised me. A little more on my financial background below. Would it be possible for me to request or get a credit limit increase soon or in the future? I was trying to build my credit line, decrease utilization, and earn some cash back in general. A bit disappointed in the credit amount.

2024.04.29 00:09 EyeBusy 70k Pre-approval offer in App?

70k Pre-approval offer in App?
Just wondering if anyone had gotten this offer as well before the news of the 70k offers a week ago. In the beginning of the month I had opened the App and gotten pre-approved for the Reserve with a 70k bonus
It was odd to me to even get pre-approved. I've heard of some getting in branch offers but was wondering if anyone else had gotten the 70k in app and what did you do different?
Also if you were pre-approved did you do anything different? I've been wanting the reserve or preferred for 5 years, my wife had better credit score and seemed to have better chances but was denied because she didn't put enough spend on her freedom flex that she got 3 years ago. Mostly because I use my gold.
I know I'm a bit superstitious but I do feel like what I did helped.
I've been checking often the last 7 months to see if I was pre-approved and nothing. A few days before I got Pre-approval in the app I looked at the reserve in the app by doing the "right card for you" questionnaire. I started the application then closed it. Then I fixed my income by adding 20k for a total of 140k, and I also linked my Charles schwab investment account that has 225k in it. I did this by using the wealth management tool. Then I linked my Amex card accounts. Closed the app. Next day(daytime) I went to the credit card area again and the Reserve was one of the first to pop up. I did the questionnaire again. Started the application, closed it, then played with wealth management, closed the app. Then later in the night (2am) the next day, I saw a notification in the app saying I was pre-approved for the Reserve with a 70k offer then instantly applied.

2024.04.28 23:29 llcoolmathgames Which credit score do I trust?

Hello! Sorry if I used the wrong tag! This is my first time ever posting.
I’m really confused on which credit score report I should be trust. For context, I have 1 credit card thats about a year old and I bank at Bank of America. I always pay my card in time and I pay more than the minimum and it always reports my score as growing on the BofA app. I recently started checking my score on 3 different apps but they all report a different score:
Experian App: - Experian Score =710 Credit Karma App: - TransUnion Score = 686 - Equifax Score = 686 BofA App: - FICo Score = 766
I want to buy a car soon (hopefully a new one so that I dont have to deal with used car trouble since I’m not car savvy) but I’m worried abt which one a dealership will check. I’m still not 100% sure how credit scores works and just wanted to see if anyone could help and explain or any advice. Sorry for rambling, hope to hear back!

2024.04.28 23:12 cheese-bubble [Request] Cards for my Grandma's 99th birthday! [Canada]

Hi everyone. My grandma turns 99 on May 25. RAoC is such a terrific idea and it would be amazing to surprise her with as many cards as possible for this special milestone! I sense she gets lonely at times and this will help make her day special.
She lives in a senior care home and is mentally sharp but her mobility has decreased and her eyesight is deteriorating. Family and friends are so important to her. She loves her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren very much. And we dearly love her.
My grandparents were married for 74 years and my grandpa died a couple years ago. They were farmers who enjoyed watching all kinds of sports (curling is my grandma's current favourite), loved golfing, and did a lot of travelling across North America and beyond. My grandma used to be an avid sewer, did all sorts of crafts, and was a fantastic cook. She also enjoyed gardening and loves flowers - one of her faves are pansies.
If you’d like to send her a card, please comment below and I’ll reach out with my mailing info. Any and all cards will be cherished. I'll collect them and wait until her birthday to share them with her. I'll gladly post "thank you" messages and I appreciate anyone who wishes to celebrate with us!
