Should I continue to my comparison of Onn 4k Pro vs Fire TV Cube vs NVIDIA Shield TV Pro vs Roku Ultra?

2024.05.12 10:14 Raiden_Kaminari Should I continue to my comparison of Onn 4k Pro vs Fire TV Cube vs NVIDIA Shield TV Pro vs Roku Ultra?

I want to be able to help my elderly friends and family transition to cutting the cord, but have found it difficult.
I personally have a Toshiba FireTV, NVIDIA Shield TV Pro, and Roku Ultras, as well as some other Android streaming boxes that I've gathered after I first started moving away from cable TV.
My first streaming device was the Toshiba FireTV. It was a great experience at first, but I quickly became frustrated with it's memory/storage limitations despite adding storage with a 32GB USB. Changing apps is extremely time consuming.
So I bought the NVIDIA Shield TV Pro. I loved the performance and features of the NVIDIA Shield TV Pro. At $200, some would consider it expensive. So I decided to check out various cheaper Android/Google TV boxes. And felt that the user experience of interacting with the more cost effective Android streaming boxes would be challenging and difficult to support for the elderly.
I bought the (refurbished) Roku Ultra after recently trying my friend's Roku Express 4K, and discovered the UX was quite good. I presented FireTV, NVIDIA Shield TV Pro, Android TV, and the Roku Ultra to my parents and some aging friends to use. Everyone like the NVIDIA Shield TV Pro the best, but the Roku Ultras so have been the preferred experience to replace cable/satellite TV and was easiest to explain.
Since technology keeps evolving, I decided to order the Onn 4K Pro, especially after reading reddit. I was able to order the Onn 4K Pro from Walmart this morning online, and they even delivered it in the evening. I haven't opened it yet and started playing with it yet, but I am looking forward to what this $50 box can do.
Besides the Onn 4K Pro, I'm thinking of getting a Fire TV Cube to evaluate it. However, the excessive ads running on the Toshiba FireTV makes me wonder if the experience with the Fire TV Cube would be different.
Any other recommendations (besides AppleTV)? I've read some reviews of additional streaming equipment on Android Police, AVS Forum, Business Insider, Consumer Reports, CNET, How to Geek, etc.

2024.05.11 17:13 willtag70 Onn 4k Pro vs Osprey?

Anyone with an Osprey box tried the Onn 4k Pro? Wondering about speed comparison, and also video playback controls. My Apple TV 4k is much faster but the video playback controls are worse. Osprey works well except it's very sluggish.

2024.05.10 16:28 RussellWD Got the Onn 4k Pro yesterday - first thoughts

Context - I got this to replace the Fire TV inside of a Soundbar we have for our bedroom. Other main TVs in the house have Apple TV 4k and Shields.
Right off the bat, no backlit remote. The setup was fine if not a tad long and slow it seemed. Overall interface is faster than the regular Firetv 4k we were using. Loading up video is much quicker and you can definitely tell the difference on wifi 6 versus what I had previously.
The negative starts and ends with the remote. I tried programing the IR for the soundbar to work and the remote would not connect. I have had no issues with any other remote and the soundbar, so that needs to be updated with more codes. Had to instead hook the soundbar up via Arc to get the Onn to control the volume. But doing this has not allowed for the TV to shutoff via Cec now. Looked it up and it may be a TV issue with Arc. Still, if the Onn's remote just worked with the SOundbars IR I wouldn't have to worry about it.
Part of the reason for the switch was issues with the previous device needing to transcode audio on a lot of things and so stuff would play without sound and we would have to change quality for the sound to pick up. So far in testing that is not an issue with this device.
I would give the device a just fine for what it is. Not groundbreaking for the price and the remote is definitely a negative. The fact that no one knows the rhyme or reason for the older remotes instead of the backlit one is kinda crazy.

2024.05.02 22:34 RockinRandyJamz Need plex server hardware advice

I am currently using Kodi client on various devices (firesticks, firecubes, Apple TV, onn box). These all access my media library which is a NAS hard drive. The devices in my home just read the NAS directly via the router, and the external devices access it via sftp pipe on a raspberry pi.

I would like to try making a plex server, because kodi does not do any video transcoding it just reads the file exactly as it is, so if the file is bigger or my internet connection is bad it can make a lot of buffering issues.

So can anyone help with advice, technical guides, or settings, for building a simple but adequately powerful server, preferably running headless, preferably running some form of Linux environment, that will access NAS media library and be able to do quality transcodes to avoid buffering?
I tried running plex on the raspberry pi before but the hardware could not keep up.

2024.04.23 10:23 Ident-Code_854-LQ Feature removal? Am I being cynical? About the double tap the Play/Pause shortcut back to the show in progress...

About 8 or 9 months or so, it seems like we lost a quick shortcut that was blamed away as some glitch or malfunction that the Google Engineers were working on to fix. I'm talking about double tapping the Play/Pause button on the remote to quickly go back to whatever you were watching, from any other part of YouTube TV. Like from the Live Guide, or inside the Library, or in the Search panel, and then straight back to the full screen, without having to repeatedly be pressing Back/Return or Up, Up, Up multiple times.
This used to work no matter what your setup was: Amazon Firesticks; Apple TV; Roku; or Smart TVs like Samsung; LG; Vizio; etc.
But now, I have a nagging theory about this. Bear with me, this will seem cynical or out there.
Recently, I just moved my elderly aunt to a new apartment. Among setting up her stuff, I got her broadband access, and instead of getting cable service, I bought her a Chromecast with Google TV, and signed her up for YouTube TV.
Now, I come from an Amazon household. My family watches YTTV by using Firesticks on our TVs. My aunt does not have an Amazon account, but has a Gmail address and Google account, which is why I went with Chromecast to access live tv and streaming content for her. Plus, she already watches YouTube heavily on her phone and tablet anyway.
I just realized that the Chromecast remote doesn't have a Play/Pause button. In fact, it doesn't have dedicated media controls buttons like Fast Forward or Rewind either. It just relies on you pressing on the center of the joypad to stop or start the video, then holding left or right to either go backwards or skip forwards.
Here's a Chromecast remote next to a Firestick Max remote.
Chromecast remote next to other remotes.
Roku remote. Different Apple TV remotes and a Universal Remote replacement.
Note, all these other remotes have media controls or,... at least, a dedicated Play/Pause button.
Why doesn't the Chromecast remote have that? Even the replacement remotes for them, don't have media control buttons.
Replacement Chromecast / Android TV remote. onn Android TV streaming remote.
Did Google remove this shortcut, only because it was a feature... that would benefit everyone else, but no one on their own streaming device or ecosystem?
Am I being cynical? Does this idea sound like a conspiracy theory?

Side note: The Chromecast remote is too small, too smooth, with a rounded design, and no flat surfaces to grip it with.

2024.03.21 22:40 Few_Ad_6221 Upscaling?

Help the new guy
Good afternoon all. I am somewhat new to the iptv game. I am using TiviMate as my player. I am using my Hisense U8H TV as the android source for my content and my service is this provider. Most of my channels are 720p which I guess is rather common on iptv. I have a 4k fire stick, roku 4k and onn box 4k in the house too. Would getting something like an Nvidia Shield work to better the picture by upscaling? Does Apple TV do that? Or is my setup limited by the provider and it is what it is.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

2024.03.20 01:42 CertifiedElite Upgrading the ShieldTV

Recently got a SamsungTV meaning no DV. Since the Shield doesn’t support HDR10+, AV1 and vp9 I was looking to upgrade. Apple TV is not an option as I use Stremio.
I was considering going with Homatics but saw many bug reports regarding HDR10+
The only things I really need are
Budget is not really a problem as long as it’s <£200 ish (EU region so no ONN devices)
Thanks!

2024.03.09 18:03 jerrame1 Vizio firmware updates

I strongly suggest if you like your Vizio TVs the way they are never connected them to the internet and always use external streaming devices because a firmware update will eventually mess up your TV.
I know ppl buy smart TVs to use the smart features, but in my experience it’s better and cheaper to use an external streaming device such as Walmarts onn box for 19.99( just naming the best cheapest device) External streaming devices are cheaper than replacing your tv, and can be connected to your phone,Google assistant,Alexa and Apple hub. To allow you to use some of the features without directly connecting the TVs to the internet.

2024.03.07 07:26 XuanTrungT93 Onn Goolge TV 4k update

Just installed new update for onn ggtv 4k. So far so good. Almost all annoying bugs are fixed. Especially HDR10+ now working.
Still, new bugs are here:
-Netflix always on HDR, even if you dont use always HDR in settings (Maybe app bug, not box)
-Apple tv app sometimes shows hdr, sometimes hdr10+, but mostly no hdr (Maybe app bug too)
Does anyone have the same experience? Pls share

2024.03.02 18:30 h53h54h55 ONN Tv or Firestick…?

ONN Tv or Firestick…?
With the threat of Amazon deploying its own operating system for Firesticks (and potentially taking away the ability for users to side load apps) the ONN tv stick/box seems to be gathering momentum as a cheap alternative. So what should we know? Here are the basic takeaways for anyone considering cutting the cord for the first time OR looking for that lifeboat should Amazon pull the trigger.

Head to head spec sheet - prices may differ at time of publishing.
https://preview.redd.it/m7dpvpzsfylc1.png?width=2050&format=png&auto=webp&s=576cb274b0e2721a74d9ae617377ea4a6379b836
Sifting through this (and the myriad of reviews online) what can we deduce? Well the ONN tv sounds like a good cheap back-up plan. It doesn’t have the same wifi, sound or breadth of visual outputs the Firestick has BUT its very affordable and seems to be of the same ‘difficulty’ level, when it comes to set up, as the Firestick.
There seems to be the equivalent ‘problems’ when it comes to running and owning an ONN tv but there is plenty of support online to help users out (OnnStreamingTV).
Until Amazon actually decide to drop android ios I will stick to what I know BUT i will be keeping a close eye on the ONN tv as a lifeboat if needed.

2024.02.24 21:13 garylapointe Is there an inexpensive streaming box that supports Dolby Vision with the Emby app?

Looking for an inexpensive 4k device that supports Dolby Vision. Emby does not support Dolby Vision (or HDR) on my Apple TV 4K. Emby not supporting HDR & DV on the Apple TV 4K appears to be a known issue.
Just looking at the other options out there. I see the Onn box supports HDR, but no Dolby Vision, that might be okay for only $20, but I was hoping for DV.
I see some $100+ boxes that seem to do it, but at that price point, I can just use an Apple TV 4K for that and run Infuse which supports Emby servers and will do HDR and Dolby Vision (but currently only Profile 5 for DV [with Profile 8 in the next release?] fixed!).
I'm under the impression the other devices running Emby support other Dolby Vision profiles other than Profile 5.
Thank you for any thoughts.
Additional info:
I'm new to Emby and have always used Apple TV for my streaming experience and it's always been excellent, I'm just looking at other options for me to goof around with and for others.
Edited to clarify that my Apple TV supports 4k and that Infuse, plus the TV app, properly switches me to Dolby Vision.

2024.02.24 02:05 OnePainting5647 ATV4k is the ticket!

I struggled with buffering on my TCL Google TV something fierce! I also struggle with my ONN streaming boxes (also google tv) as well but no where near as bad as the actual Google TV.
I read through all the online threads saying to “get VPNs” “get Tivimate”. I’m here to tell you none of those things will make a difference if you’re streaming on a less than adequate device.
I bought an Apple TV, downloaded Startup Show and it has been damn near perfect ever since.
I’m sure NVIDIA Shield Pro or whatever it is called is great too. Like I said, it’s all about a quality device to stream from.
So long story short, bite the bullet, spend the money on an Apple TV or NVIDIA Shield. You won’t regret it!
Happy Streaming!

2024.02.11 06:23 Federal_Studio_2256 U8K motion issues

Just picked up a 65” U8K and am having some issues with motion.
There is a ton of ghosting on anything moving fast. Not sure if I am doing something wrong or if it is a problem with the TV. Anytime someone is moving their hands as they talk, their hands are a blurry/ghosted mess. Watching football, you can hardly see the football if QB throws a pass.
I have a first gen Apple TV 4K. The above is true if I am using the native apps built into the TV OS, as well as if running through the Apple TV. If running through ATV, I can set video format to Dolby vision in the settings of the APV, which then gives me picture options for “Dolby Vision IQ”. I have also tried running on the native apps built into the TV OS in “theater day” picture settings. I have tried adjusting all the settings for clarity/motion and nothing seems to work.
The only time I’m not seeing bad ghosting is if I’m watching a movie on Netflix/prime/Hulu that is truly 4K content. But watching 1080/2160 YouTube videos, or football on Hulu Live, it’s pretty rough.
I know this isn’t a $4000 tv, but my $400 Walmart “onn” tv handles motion much better than what I am experiencing with this U8K.
Any suggestions?
