My house is a 1964 ranch in the southern part of Michigan: 1280 sq ft first floor (+ 1280 sq ft conditioned but mostly unfinished basement). I had a blower door test last fall, and things are much tighter than I'd thought - air leakage rate 1364 cf/min @ 50 pascals, with avg fresh air exchange rate of 4.3/day or .18/hour. I sealed and insulated the attic and sprayfoamed the basement sill plate before the test, and would like to add dense-pack cellulose to the walls and replace windows in the future.
My area is 5° F winter / 89° F summer design temp, and CoolCalc says my demand is 55k heating, 24k cooling. The house came with a 1989 Carrier 80% 80k natural gas furnace and ~8 seer 2.5 ton central AC. Ac died last fall, and while furnace seems to be working OK I figure 35 years was a good run and might as well replace it at the same time. I'd do dual fuel if I go with a heat pump, as natural gas is very cheap here. Other note: our power grid is not the best - I expect two or three multiple day outages each year that I use a portable generator to manage.
Most quotes were right in the same range - about 12-13 K after rebates/credits, but the two sales guys that I felt were most knowledgeable were the following:

What are the highest (HSPF2) 120v - mini split option /s? I'm sure I'm not the first person to go down this path as far as "research" goes... cabins, off grid, tiny houses, school buses, rv's, solar, etc etc, this type of install is becoming quite common, not just for DIY, and often (for example running off batteries)-- efficiency is extremely high on the list of priorities.
I've checked the energy star site and the NE USA efficiency site, but there are thousands of units to look through, with no way to sort 120v vs 230v. And neither site seem to be (necessarily) comprehensive when it comes to the smalle120v units..
(I won't personally care about SEER2 as the AC season here is about 1-2 weeks a year, but of course high SEER units are also typically high HSPF and high COP). so if you want to share the highest SEER2 120v choice/s, go right ahead!
(for 120v) I'd hope to find HSPF2 of 10+, perhaps? Anything 10.5+ would/should be near the top of the list. I understand the most efficient options achieve that last little bit using variable/optimized fan speed, and some previous "gaming the testing system" to optimize for SEER testing conditions specifically was probably pretty common.
I have Mitsubishi and Fujitsu in my house, and also really like Daikin from a price vs reliability standpoint. I have good experiences with Midea/Carrierebranded, less so with Gree (parts wise), but open to whatever, even "disposable"/affordable rebranded options etc etc. I have done many installs, NOT needing DIY type, specifically. The HVAC guy in our business is tied into one brand only, so I'm posting here as I wanted to get a multi-brand perspective.
This (future) unit will be off grid and ONLY 115v circuit available not 230v. (To be clear--I understand correct unit sizing / load calculations for the space are critically important for efficiency), yes calculations will be done (conservatively) but this post is a more general inquiry. So ANY unit size 6k, 9k, or 12k, (15k?) units that stand out, or you can recommend for heating mode efficiency--would useful / appreciated... I'd be buying standard units not cassettes or ducted. Valheim has finally released the eagerly awaited Ashlands update, one of the biggest content expansions the survival game has received until now. This new Valheim update adds a new biome for endgame players, new weapons, building options, and more.
Valheim was originally released in early access in 2021, quickly becoming a huge hit. Created by Iron Gate Studio, the Norse-inspired survival game sold over 12 million copies on Steam. In 2023, Valheim was added to Xbox Game Pass, reaching even more players. Since its initial launch, the title has released regular updates as it moves towards a yet unannounced 1.0 release.
Now, Iron Gate Studio has officially released the new Ashlands update, bringing a new endgame biome to Valheim. This update comes on the heels of Valheim’s public test build which was unveiled last week. According to the patch notes, the new update works as a big content expansion, as it adds over 30 weapons, three armor sets, two capes, over 70 buildable items, over 30 crafting materials, new music, events, mechanics, and more. The update also fixes several small issues, standardizes texts through the game, and solves problems with Mead materials.
The highlight of the free expansion is clearly Valheim’s new Ashlands biome. Set in the southern parts of the game’s map, the new biome is a hellscape area filled with lava, huge fortresses, and dangerous undead creatures known as the Charred. As expected, the new area comes with a variety of enemies, such as the Fallen Valkyrie, four varieties of Charred enemies, Morgen, Askvin Calf, Lava Blob, and others, including a new boss called Fader.

Hi all, this quality local business sent me this quote and wondering if I should go with a variable system or not. The installer is reputable, BBB accredited with no complaints or bad reviews and 17 years in the business, 4.5 stars on google (over500 reviews.)
I am all about helping the small business but still worried this Goodman isn't that good because everyone seems to love Lennox or Carrier. I'm planning to do a small grid tie setup and want to put the inverter out by the panels because they are distant from the building. So the long wires can be sized for AC not DC. Probably will get a cheap inverter not rated for outdoors and want to make a weatherproof enclosure for it. Of course it will need good ventilation. Perhaps I could modify a sturdy plastic storage bin of some sort? Surely someone has made a good solution to this before, but I'm not finding much online. thanks!

Background:
The house is a new build but its out in the middle of nowhere North-ish Texas. Im not sure how reliable power would be out there and thus why Im trying to design a micro grid to keep me going in case of prolonged power failure.
The house should be pretty well insulated and have LP for heat, stove, oven. AC (efficient 3 ton and 2 ton units), washer, dryer, refrigerator, a larg-ish deep freeze plus lights, fans, etc.
Critical loads would be refrigeration, living room lights, ceiling fan, 3 ton AC unit (will have soft start capacitor)
I have a local installer that's quoting me the following:
They are estimating 19,400kWhs annually. System theoretical max is 13,365 but Ill likely never see that given that the inverters would max at 270w or ~8900w peak.

My company (US based) is in process of building a factory in India. Our planned load is around 1000kW, actual load is likely more around 500kW. Nearly everything is on inverters (HVAC, Air Compressors, LED lights, almost everything else is on a 300KVA UPS). My basis for sizing things has come from measuring the equipment in a similar plant in US that is about 3x larger. In this facility we have a 320kVAR correction and we maintain better than 0.99 PF at all times.
Engineering group in India claims they need 550kVAR. I argue that 200kVAR would be more than sufficient. They claim that the grid power factor is so poor you need more PF correction than US. Now I'm lost. Is this really a thing, correcting PF for the grid? Also, if it is a thing, does that mean we will get power for free as it passes through the meter at 0.80PF and we correct it and use it?

TL;DR: I can send multiple different signals through 1 channel. The gifs show how this looks with 4 bits / 16 signals
I was looking forward to a (non script) way to send signals between Grids, since I started playing the game 5 years ago. With yesterdays update it FINALLY arrived! However, it only provides 100 channels. Which is most certainly a reasonable amount of channels, for a normal ServeFaction/player. But Since I am a greedy player, I wanted more so I can standardize my Channels easier. I don't want to have 5 channels just to open 5 doors, I want a single "Open door channel". So I thought about ways I could reduce my channel usage.
My first Idea was to send data over multiple Relays at the same time. This is a fast way to send data, however you can only send 2n-1 Signals, (n being the amount of channels used) since you can not send an empty (0) signal. So you still have to use multiple channels.
The second Idea is the one I stuck with. Sending a digital signal through the Relay. this looks like this:

As you can (hopefully) see in the very degrading GIF, I sent 4 bit over the one action relay and one channel. I can also send different signals:

The attentive readers may have noticed 3 timer blocks on the right that are kind of not making sense right now. These 3 Timers form a "decoder" structure. This means, they convert a Binary signal to a normal timer block action. This works by checking if the sent data equals the expected Data. in this case the expected data is 1100:
sending 1100
when the correct signal is sent it activates the finals Timer block on the right, using this you can trigger any kind of Vanilla sequence with just a single Channel. and not just 4 bit (or 24=16 signals): this is scalable to infinity.
now the drawback of this system is the time it takes. for every bit you have to add 1 second of delay, with an additional 1 second delay when sending and 2 second delay when decoding. This is in my opinion a fair tradeoff for the immense potential this has. You can not only send data, you can in theory even trigger an automated response.
Now I will explain how this works, but I am not perfect in explaining. If you have any questions feel free to ask, it will take me time to answer though.

on the left side you see the sending mechanism. it is made from 3 components: Clock, bits and Reset.

the "Clock" Timer block starts the timer on all "bit" Timer blocks and the "reset" timer block. It also triggers "send signal" on the Action relay and therefore sends a "start" signal.
then, after the set delays of 2,3,4 and 5 seconds each timer block, that is turned on, triggers the "send Signal" on the relay once. after that the "Reset" Timer stops the countdown for any left timers that were not turned on. (to prevent any problems when setting the bits)
The Receiver side is a bit more complex.
it is made up from a clock, bits, reset and a decoder

At the start the bits are turned off. if The action Relay is triggered it triggers the first "clock" block and tries "trigger now" on all "bits"
if a "start" signal is received, the first "clock" block in the upper left starts the "clock" timers above the "bits". after 1 second delay the first timer turns on the first "bit". after another second the second timer turns off the first "bit" and turns on the second "bit". after another second the 3rd timer turns second "bit" off and the 3rd on. this is continued for every "bit".
now: these timings match with the timings of the sender. when the sender "bits" are triggering the action relay they also trigger all bits on the receiver, but only the bit that is turned on reacts. you can see this in the gifs: every bit turns on one light when triggered.
the decoder is responsible for checking if the correct combination of on/off signals was received. this is done by using the "start/stop timer" and "on/off" option of the Timer block. if you want to react to a 1111 signal, the setup is:
bit 1: Timer 1 start, bit 2: Timer 1 on, bit 3: Timer 2 start, bit 4: Timer 2 start
you set the commands in the "setup action" inside the "bits" timer blocks. Those two timer blocks then use the same principle to trigger the 3rd "decoder" block on the right. however since we also want to use combinations like "1000" we have to invert those signals somehow.
the 10 part is simple. when reset, the first decoder block is turned on. and The 2nd bits command are changed to "Turn off". if there is a signal now (01XX or 11XX) it turns the first "decoder"timer off and it cant use any actions.
the 00 part is where its getting difficult. We need to start the countdown of the 2nd "decoder" timer with the clock at the beginning. The delay has to be long enough for "bits" 3 and 4 to trigger, when a wrong signal is sent (XX10, XX01, XX11). when they trigger bit 3 is going to "Stop" the countdown, while bit 4 is going to turn the block off.

as u/Mythe7 pointed out, it is slow and can be improved by using the implementation of the "Trigger now" function. if you use 5 more blocks on the sender side as a "clock" you can trigger one timer after another with the "trigger now", and therefore working at basically minimum speed. this does make stuff more expensive but reduces send time from 6 seconds to 6-7 ingame ticks.
unfortunately I can not add anymore pictures, so I will try my best to explain it:
The new sender clock now has a total of 6 blocks: The "Clock Start" block triggers the relay one time for the "start" signal and then triggers a "Delay" block. The Delay block triggers the first "Clock" block "Clock 1". this is necessary because the action relay introduces a1tick delay, which has to be compensated. The "Clock" blocks each trigger the "Bit" block of the same number and the next "clock block" (Clock 1 triggers Bit 1 and Clock 2)
the bits stay the same and just trigger the relay.
the receiver clock works almost the same way, but it does not need a delay block. so the "clock start" block triggers "clock 1" and Turns itself off, so it does not get triggered again "clock 1" triggers "clock 2", and TURNS "bit 1" ON, so if the relay triggers it, the signal is kept. "clock 2" triggers "clock 3", Turns on "bit 2" and Turns off "bit 1" they do this until the end, where a "clock reset" block turns all "bits" off and the "clock start" back on
after that its the same as before.

New Mecha Vehicles

  • Strider: A two-seater vehicle with the ability to jump. It's armed with missiles that can be used to bombard designated areas. Missiles can be replenished at the Repair Station in the Assembly Base.
  • Levitron: A special vechile that can switch between a speed form and a magnetic form. Serves as the upper-body component that combines with a Strider to form the Armamech.
    • In speed form, the maximum speed and hover height will be increased, and the vehicle gains a "collision acceleration" ability: it will not slow down when it hits an obstacle. Instead, it will accelerate using the stored magnetic energy.
    • In magnetic form, the maximum speed and hover height will be reduced, but it can activate a "Magnetize" ability to grab and toss characters, vehicles, and specific objects.
  • Armamech: A four-seater vehicle combined from a Levitron and a Strider. It can also be directly summoned from the Steel Ark.
    • It possesses 2 weapons that it can freely switch between: the Strider's missiles, and the Levitron's "Magnetize" ability.
    • It has a boosted jump that enables it to leap high and far with the assistance of jets.
    • Bring a Levitron and a Strider close together to combine them. After combining, the pilot of the Levitron becomes the pilot of the Armamech. It can also be separated at any time.

Brand New Environments

  • Steel Ark:
    • A giant space battleship that will land on the map at the start of a match. You can enter it and explore inside. The core of the Steel Ark is a platform where you can summon the Armamech from the skies! You can launch yourself into the air in this mecha for everyone to see.
    • The ark consists of many areas. You can find all kinds of supplies and Supply Crates at the Command Post, Dormitory, Warehouse, and more.
    • From the landing pad, you can board an evacuation Wingman, which will take you straight to the Playzone!
    • You can use elevators and ziplines in the ark to get around.
    • Steel Ark Air Drop: A Steel Ark loaded with supplies will fly around during the match and drop supplies consisting of an Air Drop Crate and several Supply Crates at specific drop points.
  • Assembly Base:
    • The Assembly Base contains a Mecha Repair Station. Approach it in a mecha to replenish the mecha's health, fuel, and missiles.
    • On the top floor of the Assembly Base, there is a detector that can determine the location of crates within the Assembly Base. An Access Card can be found in one of the crates, which can be used to open the door to the Secret Room and get loads of supplies.

New Items

  • Jetpack: Pick it up and equip it to increase movement speed. It possesses the ability to hover in the air for a short duration. It consumes Energy rapidly when lifting off. Energy will only be replenished when you reach the ground. The Jetpack has a Health bar that protects you from damage to your back and arms. It will be destroyed after taking a certain amount of damage. When reaching a certain speed while moving forward, it can switch to a speed form. You will perform a special action when you tap "Lift Off" as it switches to the speed form. The Jetpack comes with the "Magnetize" ability, but you will not be able to fly fast when using it.
  • Personal AED: If you have this item, you can tap self-rescue after being knocked down. Once successful, you will recover from the knocked down state. Each player can only carry one of these items. Self-rescuing will be interrupted if you move while using this item.
  • Magnet Gun: This is a downgraded version of the Levitron's "Magnetize" ability in gun form. Switch to it by tapping on the firearm bar. It works the same as the Levitron's "Magnetize", but with reduced values.
  • Respawn Beacon: Throw the beacon on the ground to mark a location that the plane will pass over. Recalled teammates can parachute into the match again at the cost of a respawn chance. Teammates who have used up all their respawn chances cannot respawn.
  • Quick Parachute: When parachuting, a quick parachute button will appear at a certain height in the air. Tap it to immediately deploy the parachute which can also be freely put away.
  • Repair Station: Approach the Repair Station in a mecha to replenish its health, fuel, and missiles.

(Some special vehicles aren't affected by this change.)
  • Mobile Shop Vehicle Modification: Added a new item to the Mobile Shop in Erangel, Livik, Miramar, and Sanhok. Use Shop Tokens to purchase its key and turn the Mobile Shop into a drivable vehicle. Items can only be purchased from the Mobile Shop when it's parked. If the vehicle is destroyed, it can no longer be used as a shop.

WASHINGTON—A little-known but powerful regulator has finalized sweeping new rules designed to expand the construction of big power lines and bring more renewable energy to U.S. homes and businesses.
The rules approved by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, which oversees wholesale electricity markets, are expected to make it easier for big regional transmission projects to get approval.
FERC approved two rules Monday, one that will require companies that produce and transmit electricity to weigh factors such as supply and demand over at least two decades and another that addresses permitting of critical projects in areas that lack adequate transmission capacity.
The rule requiring long-term planning is "the biggest single action by the federal government to advance transmission," said Rob Gramlich, president of Grid Strategies, a power consulting firm.
The long-term plans will need to account for the impact of extreme weather tied to climate change along with the cost of projects. By expanding transmission capacity, regions hit by weather disasters will be more resilient because they can access power from other parts of the country.
Most utilities already plan for future demand and other contingencies, but few do so decades in the future. What has resulted is a largely ad-hoc national grid that has at times left utilities behind the curve amid shifting power generation technologies, demand and destructive weather events fueled by climate change.
In Georgia, the state's main utility, Georgia Power, has increased demand projections sixteen-fold and plans to burn more natural gas to meet that demand. Virginia's largest utility, Dominion Energy, which supplies electricity to most of the state's data centers, expects their power use to quadruple over the next 15 years , representing 40% of the utility's demand in the state.
"Our country is facing an unprecedented surge in demand for affordable electricity while confronting extreme weather threats to the reliability of our grid and trying to stay one step ahead of the massive technological changes we are seeing in our society," FERC Chairman Willie Phillips said Monday.
Republican Commissioner Mark Christie voted against the long-term planning rule, which he said is unfair to consumers and oversteps FERC's authority.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D., N.Y.) said on a media call Monday that FERC's planning rule helps make up for Congress's failure in the past few years to pass legislation to expand power transmission. He said he doesn't expect Congress to pass transmission legislation this year.
Across the U.S., plans for myriad new power projects, largely wind and solar, are languishing due to delays in their ability to connect to the grid. The backlog of new power projects, mostly solar, wind and battery storage, seeking to connect to the grid jumped by 30% in 2023 from the previous year, according to a recent report by the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. New projects "are mired in lengthy and uncertain interconnection study processes," the report said.
The rule is designed to push projects that benefit ratepayers, resulting in more transmission capacity that can deliver cheaper electricity. It also addresses how costs are spread out among ratepayers in projects that include multiple states.
"Cost allocation is a huge issue, and it's a contentious one," said Larry Gasteiger, executive director of Wires, a trade association.
Critics of the rule say it could clash with oversight of utilities by local regulators and potentially lead to increases in consumer bills. Several Republican attorneys general have threatened to sue the government over the rule, claiming FERC is overstepping its authority in a bid to bring more clean energy onto the grid.
Utilities aren't always proponents of long-distance power lines, which can bring in power cheaper than their own generation. The cost of wind and solar energy has plunged in recent years, making it more competitive with natural gas.
"One of the main reasons utilities don't want to build a major transmission [project] is because it can harm their power-plant business," said Ari Peskoe, director of Harvard Law School's Electricity Law Initiative.
The planning rule also provides new guidelines for the role of states in big transmission projects and seeks to enlist their input in the early stages of project planning.
The new rules come as demand for power is rising, driven by new manufacturing, electric vehicles and giant data centers catering to artificial intelligence. That has caused utilities to scramble to adapt, some backtracking on plans to retire fossil-fuel power plants or add new natural-gas generation.
The planning requirements will also spur utilities to adopt more so-called grid-enhancement technologies , such as sensors and power flow control devices, which can improve the transmission of electricity across existing lines. Such technologies are often cheaper than building new power lines.
The Biden administration is pulling other levers to spur transmission construction. Last month, the Energy Department moved to become the lead federal agency coordinating environmental approval of major transmission projects across the U.S. in a bid to fast-track grid-infrastructure construction . The new process seeks to reduce the red tape grid planners faced as they sought separate approvals from a patchwork of federal agencies such as the Environmental Protection Agency, Interior Department and the Agriculture Department.

I’m really hoping someone can help me out here. It’s almost 3:00am and I’m sitting in my car to charge my phone.
A couple of months ago we had a brief power outage. Not only did my Solaredge Battery Banks not take over, the power never came back on with the house initially. I had to reboot some things myself. I don’t recall the details but I eventually had power when the power came back on but now I was no longer getting power from the panels. This was actually the second time this happened since the original install and also the second time I lost power. The only time I’ve ever been able to get backup to work was immediately after install just testing the system. Installers eventually came out and installed a surge protector in the main panel and the tech also noticed that the battery wiring wasn’t done 100% correctly. Up to this point my system worked as it should (as far as I can tell) when main power was being supplied from the grid. Solar would charge batteries and we would pull from batteries in the evening. The issue is when I lose power and I need this $57k system to do its damn job. I knew the grid down didn’t work because I tested it after they left the last time. I told them it wasn’t working. And like clockwork it’s damn near impossible to get them out here. One of the electricians lives just 5 minutes up the road from me too. During grid down the Backup Interface has now power and the Inverter has no power. The batteries (2) both have the blue communication light blinking consistently and the green power light blinking every 3-4 seconds. Fault light is not blinking.
Does anyone know what the heck is going on? During grid down are the batteries supposed to supply power to the inverter which in turn supplies power to the BU Interface which then allows power to the house? If so, it would seem the inverter isn’t getting power or a signal from the batteries.

A wrapped bundle of four journals with technical pens were awaiting me on a walnut ash solid wood desk when I arrived at this apartment three weeks ago. Look in them and you will find entries for everyday since the beginning. This new life is so interesting to me and I find it pointless to keep thoughts bottled up inside and since I have no one to talk to, writing helps the time go by. Some days I will write for hours.
On Tuesday mornings, I attend "Participant Tapestry" from nine to ten, followed by a "Synaptic Bloom" session until half past eleven. Thursdays are dedicated to "Empathy Assimilation" cycles. From eleven to noon my task is to log learned data from my sessions into the GLiPH pad (Global Interface for Personal Handwriting).
My primary function is to serve as a healing conduit to four individuals experiencing ongoing building trauma from the 2033 earthquake that woke up the entire city while simultaneously putting seven thousand, one hundred forty-two to indefinite rest. Each of the four individuals will stay in the respective living quarters on the other side of me, for one month at a time. The first arrives in two weeks, one year to the day of the tragedy.Though, had it not been for you, I would have sat here for another two weeks waiting, alone and isolated.
I’m not sure I would classify my actions as spying because I had innocently been staring out of the window, as I always do, like any of you do, when a flutter from your direction suddenly snagged my gaze.
Peering through my porthole window, I marveled at loose papers doing backflips and pirouetting in the air before gently falling to the ground. A swaying fixture of light bulbs swayed back and forth on their cords creating dramatic shadows on the tall walls of your kitchen. One bulb had been shattered and appeared sharp like a shark's rack of teeth.
In the midst of the chaotic scene, you emerged into view through the window. You had on a mangled and loose white t-shirt that looked as though you had been in a fight. The other man with you had on a black denim jacket. For all intents and purposes, his name shall be “Jacket”.
At my computation you both stood at about the same height, however, mass wise, you two are different. Jacket’s arms were bulging even through the denim. You stood in front of each other shouting into the other’s face, both wide-armed in an attempt to make yourselves big and authoritative.
I want to know what he said that caused you to become small. Your lips came together as Jacket’s lips raged on. Your shoulders slouched forward while your neck and head dropped. Your defeated posture tells stories of past and impending loss. I want to give you a long hug. Your jet black hair was tied up and your beard was shiny and tear-sloppy.
Eventually, Jacket stopped shouting and stood in position, quiet and staring up at the swinging pendulum.
A moment later, Jacket lifted his hands upward and cradled either side of your scruffy face. As he did this he began mouthing words. I am advanced but lip reading is one thing I am not capable of.
You hastily wiped Jacket’s hands off of your face as if you had had enough. You turned away from Jacket and sat down at the table. Is this where you both had shared your meals together? You lowered your head onto the top of your hands and stared longingly out of the window.
Jacket disappeared into the expansive abyss and a second later lights illuminated under a dome stretch of skylight glass.
Shuddering breaths escaped your lips, your cheeks quivering with each sharp inhale. At one moment, you got up and began picking up and pushing in chairs with seemingly trembling hands. You began a series of anxious tasks such as stacking plates and arranging objects most-likely to ease the pain that was burning inside of you. This front row seat to the raw emotions unleashed during this conflict made for a captivating study. Your behavior is particularly intriguing, leaving me yearning to understand the story behind the pain.
With a duffle bag and a backpack in tow, Jacket came back into the dimly lit kitchen. As he struck his arm down firmly, his mouth began to run, as if he was trying to quickly make a point. With the message received yet not accepted, you paused for a moment, proceeded to pick up a small potted plant sitting on the table and chucked it with force towards the open space on the ground in between the both of you. Humiliated, hysterical and sobbing, you sat back down at the table. Jacket took one final look at you, shook his head and walked out of the room with his bags, leaving you alone to pick up the pieces and the mess strewn all over the apartment.
A second later all of the windows in your place went from illuminated to black. And just like that, the chaos had come to an end.
I simply cannot accept this ending. There has got to be more. I am helplessly glued to this apartment in the same way you are glued to yours and the memories inside of it. My desire to reach out is genuine. You need solace in this time of pain. I want to learn you and help you navigate these troubled waters. After all, empathy is born from understanding, and I genuinely wish to see you heal. The sight of you wiping away tears ignites a desire to offer comfort.Let this twenty-first day of my new life mark the first day I discovered you. I will employ this companion drone to bridge the gap between us. For now, a silent observer I will be with a presence as light and maneuverable as a hummingbird.

2024.05.14 02:49 rmnelson Notification of grid outage in Franklin app?

We just had the FranklinWH battery and A-Gate installed and it seems to work well with our older inverter and PV. We will need to manually reduce loads in the event of a grid outage, and I'm concerned that if we don't get an outage message we might trigger our HWH which pulls 5.2kW. Franklin tells me to go into the app and confirm that push notifications are enabled. I cannot find any place in the iOS Franklin app showing push notifications are enabled. I suppose I could just toggle the shutoff at the service entrance and see what what happens, but thought I would check here to see if there is any advice.
Should I be thinking about a redundant outage reporting system?

Hello all. I've been doing some research and have a general idea of what's needed but definitely not an expert. This would be to power a 500+ square meter home in South Africa with a pool. For me, the important thing would be building a system that works well for me, and not so much making dramatic life changes to accommodate an underpowered solar system.
I would like to basically be able to power everything without worrying about tripping the inverter, and having enough batteries to get through the night. In SA, true north is the best direction, but to accommodate more panels I would also use east and west. Here is what I'm thinking based off of items I see from a local vender:
Pallet (31) 600w panels (2) 12kw hybrid 3 phase inverters (5) 10.25kw batteries
Does this seem like a good setup? I believe string inverters are limited and only perform at the strength of the panel receiving the least amount of sun, so a hybrid inverter is a must. Correct? What I'm not so sure about is the single phase vs 3 phase option. I believe I was that your home actually has to have the ability to receiver 3 phase power. I'm not sure.
Also, I haven't decided whether I'll use the grid or get a generator in case of multiple cloudy days. Thanks for your responses.

Struggling over here with my lights
So I have a Surron and decided too make more work for myself and upgrade too a 95 watt light. The oem inverter can not carry that load so I installed a new one rated for 20 amps. Any idea why this might have happened to the inverter. It was working fine when I dry fit it and then after about 5 minutes I heard a pop. Another mention I tied the high, low, and daylight running beams wires together and spliced it too the positive. Not sure if that’s how it should be wired but I am just using an on off switch. I noticed that when I put the high and low together it didn’t make a difference. Meaning when the high goes on so does the low. Maybe I shorted it by putting the high with the low? Or maybe I drew too much amperage. But everything besides that is to spec. Another mention - the harness is pretty long and 16 awg but comes with an inline 30 amp blade fuse leading me to believe 16 awg is big enough awg. I am going crazy. I just ordered another step down but I am worried I will blow it again! Any ideas will be much appreciated and thank you for reading this far!

Need some advice on an upcoming install.
I’d planned to get 12 or 14 (13 just won’t do!) panels and a 9.5 KWh GivEnergy battery with the 5KW inverter but some idle googling revealed that the battery has discharge rate of 3.6KW so have started to think should I be upgrading to the All In One 13.5KWh for the 6KW discharge rate.
I’ve tested this evening what my various appliances draw and the combination of oven, kettle, tumble dryer takes me to 6-7KW but only for brief moments (the oven draws less power when up to temperature, the kettle is never on very long). Without the kettle it settles at 3-4KW.
My average daily usage excluding the octopus intelligent go cheap hours (where I’ll be charging the battery off the grid anyway) is 8-9KW so matches pretty well the 9.5KWh battery.
Has anyone with the 9.5KWh battery regretted it for the discharge rate?
Is it worth going for a battery that’s bigger than we may strictly need for the higher power.

My EV has a 75 kilowatt hour battery and since buying it a few years ago, Covid happened and I now work from home full time. Since the car spends a lot of time sitting in the garage, I would love to build an inexpensive off-grid system to charge my vehicle. In terms of the materials I would need, I'm happy to pick up some used solar panels from Facebook marketplace. I know I need a pure sine wave inverter capable of 2000 watts (I'm happy to charge my car at 120 volts seeing as it can go days without moving) but in terms of the battery I would need connected to my solar setup, how little can I get away with? Batteries are expensive after all.
Ideally I would like to be able to just set the solar panels in my driveway, switch on the inverter and plug the car in. If I didn't have enough battery though, I imagine it would be bad for all the hardware if I kept draining the battery to empty when I'm trying to charge the car. Is it safe to have solar panels charging a battery while it's simultaneously being drained?
