At first it wasn’t bad but I didn’t enjoy learning it strictly off a computer and started struggling because it gave me a hard time. Lets just say I had a horrible time during covid LOL. She basically makes us get on Codio which is basically like a study Island to learn code. She doesn’t know much so anytime we asked for help she told us to ask another student simply because “she doesn’t know”. She asked questions regarding on what our other AP teachers do and how they teach. She also asked us how to do certain assignments. She also graded very roughly, for example, she would see she doesn’t have anything to put in for grades before interims and tell us a week before to rush and complete a WHOLE UNIT. This is code we are talking about btw!!!! She would then just grade that entire unit for completion and the test at the bottom. I ended up having to rush a couple units barley learning anything due to this. Also during the 3rd Quarter I wanted to test if she cared about our work or even bothered to look. I completed the Codio assignments putting nothing in but made sure it said “100% complete” when i was done on each assignment. She ended up giving me a 50/50 and giving me 20/20 for the test. My class and I have made complaints to our AP coordinator and she listened to our cases but it was basically to late into the year to do something. She also forgot to teach us java and only taught us Python which isn’t on the AP Exam at all. I know Im not gonna pass and Im more frustrated I have to go and have my time wasted more. I took this class because i aspire to be a software engineer. I feel her as well as the school wasted my time, and they are continuing to do it. I also can’t miss the exam or they charge a 98$ fee ARGHHH, but if i sign my name and ect and walk out about 30 mins in would they still charge me?

Forgive me if i'm uneducated in this department, so please explain things like i'm in 3rd grade when it comes to stuff like this haha.
I'm looking for something pretty basic, my main concerns are as follows: - Easy to use (ui wise and transferring files) - Cheap(er) - Reliable - Ability to create playlists - Decent storage (nothing crazy)

I used to have a player that fit all this, it was the SanDisk clipjam (8gb). I would totally get one again, i'm seeing them retail at about $35. I don't mind that, but I figure i'd come here and ask if there's something better for me since you guys know this territory much better.

I’m a 20 year old uni student studying full-time while working a part-time retail job that I go to a few days a week. Weekly I get paid a bit over $400 which largely goes towards my savings and some discretionary spending (I get a couple hundred in youth allowance each fortnight too). I currently live at home so have minimal expenses which has let me save up around 50k. I’ve been thinking about quitting that job for a few reasons. Partly because I don’t like going there anymore and also because I’m just not sure if it’s worth it for me. So far I’ve been okay at managing my time so working hasn’t really cut into my grades too much. However, I fear that might change as subjects get increasingly harder (I’m in 3rd year now and have one more left). I also want to go travelling and I feel like there will never be a time in my life again where I have so much flexibility with time and commitments compared to now. Especially since I’ll be on my uni-facilitated work placement next year and hopefully be in a graduate role the year after.
Finances wise it would be about a 15k difference if I weren’t working this job. I would be getting a bit more in youth allowance per fortnight (though I’m not eligible for the full amount) so there’s still a little income there.

There have been an increasing number of juniors visiting this sub asking for advice about writing essays. Below are some tips and advice for making your essay stand out as excellent. Feel free to ask questions because I will answer every single question in the comments.
I know from experience that many of you are struggling to identify a good topic for your essay. Conventional wisdom says to start by brainstorming a list of potential topics, and chances are, you have already started a mental list of ideas. You might think you only have a few choices for topics, based on your activities or experiences, or essay examples you read, or the rough draft you already started (or worse, that GPT started...). I advise, however, that you put down your list of topics and back away from it. Forget that exists for a moment. Seriously - thinking about this initial list tethers you to certain ideas that might not actually be your best options.
Now you can begin brainstorming with a clean slate.
Start with thinking about what you want to show in your entire application, not just one essay. Every single component in your app has one purpose – to tell more about YOU. Filling out the rest of the application by rote and focusing solely on the essay is short-sighted and will leave so much potential untapped in your application.

It's About You. Tell Your Story - And Be The Protagonist

An admissions officer’s goal is to understand you fully, in the context of your background and the rest of the applicant pool. They will begin this with assessing your academic abilities and potential. Then they will evaluate how you will fit into the student body they’re trying to curate. All of this can be somewhat broad and diverse and touch on several institutional goals. But they will dig deep to find out what each applicant is like, what your core values and motivations are, what kind of student you will be, how you will contribute to the vibrant and intellectual campus community they’re building, etc.
Your goal with essay brainstorming is to ascertain how to powerfully tell your story in a manner that will fit these criteria. The entirety of your application (again, not just one essay) aims to showcase your abilities, qualifications, and uncommon attributes as a person in a positive way. Before you begin outlining or writing your application, you must determine what is unique about you that will stand out to an admissions panel. All students are truly unique. Not one other student has the same combination of life experiences, personality, passions, or goals as you do. Your job in your application is to frame your unique personal attributes in a positive and compelling way. How will you fit on campus? What personal qualities, strengths, core values, talents, or different perspectives do you bring to the table? What stories, deeper motivations/beliefs, or formative experiences can you use to illustrate all of this?
It is always helpful to start with some soul-searching or self-examination. You might not immediately know what you want to share about yourself. It’s not a simple task to decide how to summarize your whole life and being in a powerful and eloquent way on your application. Introspection prior to starting your application takes additional time and effort rather than jumping straight into your first draft. But it is also a valuable method to start writing a winning application that stands out from the stack.
You'll see the advice everywhere that all essay prompts are really about the same thing - you. The goal of each essay then is to showcase who you are, what matters to you, and how you think. I guarantee if you're on this sub enough, you'll hear the advice to "show, don't tell" when writing about yourself. But what does this mean really, and how do you do it well? How do you even get started on an essay that does this?

Introspection Questions

It’s often easiest to start thinking in terms of superlatives, especially those related to personal insights -- what are the most meaningful things about you, and what do you value the most? Here is a list of questions to help you brainstorm broadly before you narrow down your focus for writing:

• What are your interests?
  
• What sparks your curiosity?
  
• About what topics do you enjoy reading?
  
• With whom do you enjoy spending time? Who has impacted your life the most?
  
• Reflect upon “superlatives” in your life. What moments were most memorable, formative, enlightening, enjoyable, or valuable? What physical possessions, experiences, dreams, or lessons could make your superlatives list?
  
• Stop and think about what things, people, or circumstances in your life are really unique, fascinating, or outlandish. Are there any that really have a lot of "cultural flavor" (whatever your culture is)?

Find Your Story And Arc

Think of a small anecdote or story from your life that you could share that serves as a microcosm of who you are and what is important to you. It will massively help you narrow this down and find a gem of a story if you first start by thinking about your application arc or theme. This is the one-phrase summary of your entire application. It could be "brilliant entrepreneur who started her own successful business" or "talented athlete who wants to study economics and finance as they pertain to sports", or even "avid baker whose hobby sparked an interest in chemistry". It doesn't have to be related to your intended major, but it can help your arc be stronger and clearer if it is.
Once you have an arc determined and a story to share, think about what you want that story to say about you. This is where it can help to think of this as something you would share on a date - what impression does it make about you to the reader? Once you know this, start showing, not telling this attribute of yourself through your story. For example, instead of saying that you're compassionate toward others, you show an example of a time you were compassionate, then elaborate on why, and what it means to you.

Essay Brainstorming Techniques

If you are having trouble finding a story, or simply have writer’s block once you have picked your topic, here are some ideas to get your juices flowing:

• Stream of consciousness writing -- Start writing whatever is in your head, and don’t stop for 30 minutes. You probably won’t use what you just wrote for your essay, but it will help you find a starting point.
  
• Journaling -- Answer the prompt as if you were writing in a journal. This will get you in the habit of writing about yourself and establish comfort with the concept. It will also take you to a new level of introspection and self-awareness.
  
• Twitter X style -- Write several rapid-fire responses to the prompt in 280 characters or less. Choose an idea from these responses to expound upon in your essay.
  
• Read each essay prompt, then go through your introspection worksheet responses and connect the stories and insights to one or more of the prompts. Some students like using color coding to visually see how their different ideas might work together.
  

Why Essays Matter

Here's the thing a lot of people don't realize about college admission: it's not an award for being the smartest, most accomplished, or most impressive. It's an invitation to join a community. Far too many students think that if they can just show that they're smart enough, they'll get in. Yale even says right on their admissions website that 75% of their applicants are academically qualified to succeed at Yale. But only ~4% are getting in. That should tell you that they're looking for more than just top tier test scores and grades. To be perfectly clear, you will need top tier grades and (optionally) test scores to show that you're qualified, and the vast majority of my students come to me with this part already in the bank. But what sets the admits apart? It's personal insight - sharing who you are, how you think, what matters to you, and how you engage community. You can't just say "/IAmVerySmart, please admit me," or even "I did a cool thing guys! Isn't that neat!" You need to go deeper and show them your core values, personal strengths, motivations, aspirations, character traits, foundational beliefs, personality, etc. And you need to do it in a charming, winsome way that makes them like you and want to invite you to join their community.
So how do I get students to do this? All of my students complete that introspection worksheet. We go through it and find the stories, examples, anecdotes, conversations, memories, relationships, and other things from their life that will help us craft a strong and personally insightful narrative. We also make lists of the values, strengths, and key personal qualities we want to showcase. Once we have some topics, outlines, abstracts, or rough drafts, we talk about which stories to tell where, how to tell them well, and what details to include to present the best they have to offer. Then we refine, edit, polish, and enhance over and over until the story sings, but more importantly shows their heart and soul. We also go through all the other application components to ensure consistency, quality, and distinctiveness.
Here's why this works so well: at most highly selective colleges there is a primary reader (or 2-3) who will review everything first and then present it to the admissions committee, who then votes on whether to admit you. That presentation typically goes one of three ways:

1. Total enthusiasm, energy, and excitement. They strongly advocate for admission and paint a clear picture of how you will contribute to their goals and community. Everyone in the room picks up on that energy and is leaning forward in their chairs, looking for reasons to admit you. This is quite rare, generally less than 5 out of every 100 applications, even among those which are "fully qualified." When you do this right, you show depth, meaning, and valuable personal insights so the reviewer is learning about who you are and how you might engage the community they're curating. You come alive off the page as a person, not just another file.
   
2. Business as usual. You're another great applicant in a pile of great applicants. They share a basic review of the facts, your profile, stats, strengths, weaknesses, etc. Maybe someone on the committee finds something they love, and they really push for admission. More likely, not and you get deferred/waitlisted even though there wasn't anything "wrong" with your application. They just didn't love you enough to commit.
   
3. "Here's a stack of 20 applications that I didn't find all that compelling, so we won't present them individually, but you guys are the committee and you make the decisions. So let me know if there are any you want to talk about." In this case, unless there's a letter of endorsement from an athletics coach or your last name matches several buildings on campus, you're probably not getting additional consideration, much less admission. They will regret to inform you.
   

Everything we're doing is designed to help them get to know themselves, present the best they have to offer, and land in that first group. Having top tier essays is the single best way to get there. Get started on brainstorming in the next few weeks so you'll have time to get a few essays completed over the summer.

I know the title is bad, but I have this group of friends for years. I think we all started hanging out in 2-3rd grade? I don’t know, it was years ago. But anyway, for the longest time we were inseparable. I’ll call my friends J, K, and W. I think this all kind of started near the end of 2022. The four of us got in a huge fight that ended up with J being mad at the rest of us and she wouldn’t apologize. We made up over it, with half hearted apologies and we were good for while. Over the next few months though, she and K started talking without me and W, and we started hanging out more on our own. Writhing the next few months J was barely talking to me. Though I luckily still talked to W and K. It eventually got to the point where W could tell I was being intentionally ignored, and J had even started ignoring her too for talking to me so much. J and W have a weird history, but it’s not my story to tell. It felt like on egg shells, J was always right, and if not, I had to apologize. She then started telling people things that weren’t true, I don’t have any off the top of my head, but they were not enjoyable. Turns out these rumors had been going on since the first fight mentioned in the story. I would ask a simple question, and she would pretend I was not there. All texts, calls, emails, etc. would go ignored. I eventually got mad at the fact that I had done nothing wrong, and sent an email to the group stating that I would be leaving the group because I didn’t like feeling alone with people I had known for so long. She got mad, telling mutual friends I was overdramatic and I was the one not talking to her. No one is accusing me of being the A-Hole, but I feel like one. And I know I shouldn’t, but it makes me feel like a bad person.

i cant give too many details because i know him and his friends use reddit. ill just say this. im a minor and i dated a man over 15 years older than me. it was real life, not some online thing. we met at church. he broke up with me because he said im too young for him. after 2 years he just now realizes???? we dated for 2 years. my parents never found out. i cant do anything about it because we didnt do anything sexual because we were waiting for marriage. he convinced me my parents are bad. he isolated me and made me feel like i was going crazy for having normal human emotions. i have no other friends. he said really mean things to me. but i just want him to stay. he can keep being mean to me if he wants. he never even hit me and he was so gentle. he can do whatever he wants i just want him to stay. i will never find anyone else like him. he found me when i was really suffering and made me feel wanted. he blocked me on everything and he goes to a different church now. my formative years were wasted. i have nobody. he was the only reason i was alive. he helped me lose a lot of weight too and he gave me a healthy body. he did so much for me and now hes just left. i dont know what to do. i have nobody without him and now he is just gone. i hate him i hate him so much. how can someone born in an entirely different generation ever like someone so young? what the hell is wrong with him? why would he do this if he didnt even want anything sexual? i was going to drop out of school for him when i turned 18 and we were gonna move to Vermont and get married. so i didnt care about my grades. but now hes gone and i ruined my life. i will not get into college. i will not do anything with my life now and my grades cant be brought up. i used to be so smart. i used to have ambition. i wanted to be a lawyer. my only ambition was him after i met him and now hes gone and nothing is left. i cant do anything now. how can he jusy abandon me like this? for the past month since he left i have felt like im in 3rd person controlling a video game character

My son is in 2nd grade this year and the 2nd half of the semester has been hell for him. It started off with his girl best friend in his class touching his privates at recess. So they’ve been permanently separated. Since then though he’s just encountered other various bullying. He got punched in the chest today by a 3rd grader, says he gets kicked in the balls by another girl in his class and she said if he tells she’s going to tell the teacher that he did it first and he would get in trouble, got pantsed by a different boy during lunch, etc.
Question 1.) are ALL of these normal things boys go through and we should just “deal with it”
Question 2.) how can i support my son and help him build up his confidence to stand up for himself?

mag 3rd year na ako in a few months and i still feel like i'm a very incompetent student nurse. during duty, may mga mistakes ako na dapat alam ko na gawin in the first place kasi basics lang siya. sa lecture naman, hindi sobrang baba pero hindi ko naa-achieve 'yung grades na gusto ko for the amount of time i spent i reviewing. i don't know what to do anymore. i feel like i can get to love this field, pero i'm the problem. i'm not fit in this field. what should i do? should i change program na ba? need advice please

I was reading some summarized medical notes from childhood just for kicks and giggles and man, talk about really seeing some of the ableism. I knew what I was in for since I had recently requested later records, so for this one I opted to just get abstract summaries. I had no particular motivation in getting these records other than a strong idle curiosity. I now have a few connected diagnoses, you know the ones, POTS/EDS, allergies, asthma, and also narcolepsy is thrown in there just for fun. Plus the occasional eczema flare up and recurring headaches that never stay on my chart.
I think some small part of me hoped that the notes from my pediatric time would show doctors who cared but couldn’t figure out the problem. With the records I found from my high school years, that tiny hope was quashed without a bit of surprise.
When I was a kid, we’d been in and out for years between headaches and abdominal pain. Lots of the abstracts imply my mom is somehow at fault for bringing me in but oh this one section just made me put my phone down. I was 9 at the time of this visit, just for context. Cynicism was clear in the notes that I was being coached on describing my headaches because I sometimes looked to my mother to help me explain or give details on symptoms of my severe headaches, specifically the possible auras. Probably because I was in too much pain at the time to code the memories properly and also I was barely 9, of course I was going to check with my mom.
Multiple notes reference me watching TV or reading or listening to soothing music “despite” my headaches and idk maybe I did but I also know I had a lot of times I laid in the bathroom because it was the only quiet and dark place.
Apparently abdominal migraines are a thing and even when one of the medical professionals said that seemed to be part of my problems, the sheer skepticism oozing from these notes…I have to laugh so I don’t get angry. It 100% sounds like my symptoms were worsened by my anxiety/depression but my mom brought me into the office during one and I was clearly suffering, that wasn’t “just” psychosomatic. Also, luckily, I outgrew the abdominal migraines.
I also had an essential tremor (now treated perhaps thanks to my POTS beta blocker) worsened by anxiety and I acknowledge it was worsened by anxiety, that doesn’t mean caused by anxiety ffs. That issue came up later, in the previous set of requested records. Also we kept bringing it up with doctors because my teachers were commenting to us on it out of concern.
Back to the records I just got though. Multiple instances occurred where we got blamed by one specialist for trusting another. Example: with the GI issues, one person told us maybe it was lactose intolerance. Another person down the line would take notes like we were hypochondriacs for saying “person 1 said maybe there’s lactose intolerance, maybe that’s part of it? We were told to track if symptoms were worse after milk. They didn’t seem to be but maybe?” The test for it later came back negative and the notes sound so high and mighty that again, it’s laughable.
Also the amount of “in no acute distress” despite coming in for complaints of pain, etc. I’m not surprised but I am somehow still disappointed.
Mom did get anxious about my health sometimes, seems she tried to keep me away from milk for a bit just in case. I also do believe there were some things where she brought me in unnecessarily but the poor woman was an anxious first time parent. I fault her for lots of other things but not being overly worried about my health to doctors who kept dismissing everything. Plus, I’ve always been extremely sensitive to physical stimuli and imagine I was deeply unpleasant when dealing with that discomfort while learning how to be a human.
On a more lighthearted note, apparently I took a prescription of belladonna for a while, I didn’t even know that was a thing but it was a fun Google rabbit hole to go down. I guess I also played soccer when I was in 3rd grade, which was news to me! I don’t doubt it, I just didn’t remember I’d played it.
I’m not genuinely distressed, like I said, I expected the ableism. Mostly I’m just satisfied to have my curiosity largely sated and a better timeline of certain things in my own life. As sad as it is, I can’t help laughing that multiple grown ass adults with medical degrees seemed to have one-sided beef with prepubescent me. Why even go into pediatrics, especially a pediatric specialty like urology, cardiology, etc.? (Rhetorical question)

I'm on my 3rd case of burn out working for another IT provider. After another weekend of worrying about things beyond my control, losing sleep about tickets, something finally hit me. I'm making peanuts, stressing out about these little issues that really don't matter in the grand scheme of things while the company owner (my boss) drives a 7 series and owns a beach front vacation property. I've been spending so much time worrying about getting fired for lack of performance and it leads me to work harder; desperately looking for solutions to problems that I should be escalating to others with a higher pay grade. If nobody answers my emails and the solution gets delayed, the customer gets upset...who cares ? I've been in this industry 10 miserable years and despite how hard I work, how many big problems I solve on my own, nothing ever comes of it other than a "great job to so-and-so!" company wide e-mail. Now I'm suddenly realizing that I don't want to seek recognition or a pat on the back. I want to do the bare minimum, collect a check and look for something better. During my previous burnouts, I would spend days planning out in my head a plan to quit or "just keep doing my best and apply for something better." but that always lead me to continue killing myself with stress over tickets and not putting enough time into studying/labbing and sprucing up my resume properly for a truly better, higher paying position.
I don't know why it's taken me so long to realize it but everyone here was right, it really is just a matter of perspective. Quiet quitting isn't a shameful, lazy approach. It's 100% absolutely necessary in this economy and work culture. Doing the bare minimum and letting go of any fear of being fired over lack of performance, while putting your energy into developing yourself, keeping yourself healthy and interviewing for different jobs IS THE WAY TO GO. I feel so foolish letting myself get worked up into this state of burn out again when it's totally unnecessary.
I'm no longer afraid of the confrontation about performance. I'm gonna hit em with that "I'm sorry you feel that way but I'm trying my best" until I either line up something better or they fire me so I can collect that sweet, sweet unemployment and take my time to regroup and find a job that doesn't make me want to throw my laptop out the window. There's no shame anymore and there was never any reason to feel any shame. I've worked hard for peanuts my whole life, now it's time to put in the level of work this pay deserves. I used to think this sub was full of lazy shitters but I now realize how wrong I've been.

Hey awesome teachers! Any recommendations on favorite summer workbooks that I could get for my kid? He will enter 3rd grade in the fall.
He is already an avid reader who spends most of his free time with a book in his hands. I'm thinking a math book or something that could keep him sharp during summer break. This weekend I signed up for 6th grade ELA and history classes. It was for a school I’ve never worked with before in Frontline. I get there and I’m handed my badge and sub folder. I get to my room and notice the mathematic art on the walls and the name on the desk is very different than the one I signed up for. Turns out I’m subbing for the alternative 8th grade class of students with “anger issues.” Cool. Also my subnotes are “have them check google classroom for assignments” and lo and behold, no assignments on google classroom. The para came around at 3rd period and said “you must be great with kids if no fistfights broke out.” When I left that day, the woman at the front desk told me they appreciated my work and that they’re always looking for subs. I wonder why.

Wow. So much has changed...
Long story short, I got my start in roleplaying back during the golden age of AOL and Yahoo (anyone else remember the Red Dragon Inn back in the late 90s and early 2000s?). Ah, those were the days, right? When the biggest worry was your dial-up connection, haha.
As I'm sure you'd all agree—finding long-term, advanced/literate writers is much more challenging these days. I have fond memories of when the process of coming up with a plot was an organic process; where you'd genuinely take the time to get to know the other person, build rapport, and allow a plot to form naturally.
That's what I'm hoping to find. With that said, I put a lot of effort into this post, so hopefully there's someone else out there who values the same things in a writing partner!
First of all, here's a bit about me as a person:

• I'm 30+, male, and I've written several novels and a bunch of articles, mostly in historical fiction and contemporary stories. Writing isn't just my job; it's pretty much a part of who I am.
• I'm always trying to learn something new, whether it's from books, documentaries, or just good old chatting. History and cultures fascinate me the most.
• When I'm not buried in books or work, I love to hike and take photos. There’s something about being out in nature that just clears my head.
• I love to read (especially non-fiction and historical fiction). I'm always down for swapping book recommendations, if you're also a reader!
• I love peanut butter (crunchy over smooth any day – fight me).
• On that note, if I'm being honest, coffee isn't just a drink for me; it's a ritual!
• I'm a big fan of the simple things in life. Give me a sunset, a good laugh, or a perfect slice of pizza, and I’m set.
• I love diving into those deep, meandering conversations that start with "what if" and end somewhere between "the meaning of life" and "why can’t we tickle ourselves?"
• Fun fact: I used to be able to recite all 50 states in alphabetical order — a party trick born out of a grade school challenge, haha.

Here's what I'm looking for in a writer:

• Writing Style - I'm looking for a partner who has a strong command of the English language. I'm talking about descriptive passages that paint clear pictures, dialogue that is crisp, concise, and not overly flowery. I prefer to write in the 3rd person, past tense. I prefer modern fiction and historical fiction stories.
• Communication - Life's unpredictable! What’s important is keeping each other in the loop about our schedules and any changes in the story or our approach. A quick heads-up can make a huge difference. It's all about being honest and direct with our feedback and thoughts.
• Long-Term Plots - I'm really looking for a writing partner who's in it for the long haul and is passionate about crafting intricate, plot-driven stories. For me, the joy of roleplaying lies in developing a story that evolves over time, with twists and turns that keep us both engaged and inspired.
• Sense of Humor - Writing together should be fun and relaxed, not just a serious crafting of narratives. It’s important to me that we can both throw in a bit of humor now and then, not only in our stories but in our interactions too.

Hi everyone. My 5 year old son has had enlarged tonsils for around 18 months - 2 years. He got tonsillitis 3 times relatively close together, then after the 3rd time, his tonsils stayed enlarged. He hasn’t had tonsillitis in over a year now and doesn’t get sick much at all. His behaviour is good, concentration is good during the day, good energy levels. Sleeps 11 hours per night. His symptoms are that he sounds “stuffed up” when he talks. He can breathe through his nose but he has to try, it doesn’t come naturally, he’s a mouth breather. He has mild sleep apnoea, he can grunt sometimes, he’s wet the bed a couple times, and he’s a loud mouth breather. He doesn’t really snore, just lets out some loud Grunty noises every now and again. The last time he saw an ENT doctor in the hospital, she said the same thing the GP said, that he’s a grade 3 out of 4 but they think because he doesn’t get infections, and doesn’t seem to be causing him severe discomfort or bothering him too much, he will be fine to be left alone and he will probably out grow them. She referred us for a sleep study anyways and referred us on to get a second opinion from the surgeon.
He had his sleep study done but the results came back inconclusive because he must have kicked the machine off after I last checked on him and they didn’t get enough data.
He has the surgeon appointment tomorrow and of course I don’t know what hes going to say, but my question is, has anyone here ever had a child or known someone that’s outgrown the enlarged tonsils? I see so many people saying why risk the complications of the whole procedure, anaesthetic and recovery is the child is generally well. I’d really rather prefer to stay away from surgery as I’m scared and reading all the child death stories. I’d love for him to just get given maybe a nasal spray to help him sleep better at night and try learn to breathe through his nose more.

I have a student who lost their mother to violence over a year ago. They are also LD.
I have another student who lost their dad to a heart attack about 2 months ago.
The first student doesn't try, doesn't ask for help, doesn't even put on answer on a worksheet. When I approach and say, hey, how.can I help you get started, they just suck their thumb (6th grade) and mumble, no thanks.
The other student missed about 2 weeks, came back and made all the work up and had an A. First student has an F bc they have turned in literally nothing.
I am torn. I totally get where first student is traumatized. As was 2nd student because there are multiple issues (health) with their remaining parent, whose health is on the decline rapidly.
For me, 1st student should be able to grieve, but understand that doing zero work does not help them. I have tried, guidance counselor has tried, and on site therapist has tried. 1st student just refuses.
Should I let 1st student fail for refusing help? I personally feel like if I just pass them, they'll get into that mindset that they'll be "successful" with zero effort, and the world is going to be a horrible place for them when they go out into it. Can't read. Can barely write, and gives zero effort. All o can think is homelessness, abusive relationships bc of financial needs...I know you get what I'm trying to say, so I'll leave it at that.
To clarify, have contacted Dad with concerns and he assures me he can take 1st student to the library to finish assignments. Student 1 has come back on Monday with no finished work. Talked to dad, he said he took student 1 to the library and put them on the computer (where my work is posted), but said they just wouldn't do anything.
Do I fail student 1? I've followed all the IEP requirements and have gone out of my way to assist them.

Since going to highschool clearly isn't an option for me, I'm planning to just wait out the 2 years until I'm 18. And gonna try to enroll in a community college then, since I really don't wanna give up on my dream of becoming a nurse, yet I can't get myself to do ANY type of schoolwork on my own. I don't even know basic math and I go into a panic attack whenever I try to learn it by myself, probably because I was always yelled at to "just do the math, answer the question." whenever I couldn't figure it out, and that I was always just handed the work books and told to do them, alone. In my room.
I don't want this to turn into a vent though, my education is simply; I was never once enrolled in a school, my mom tried to teach me a little bit from kindergarten to 3rd grade, but fell off on actually teaching around halfway through 2nd grade. So I really. Don't have an education, and I can't bring myself to try and get that education back because I panic when I try, and I genuinely don't know where to start, I can't teach myself something I don't know. Videos just confuse me because they assume I already know so many things, and I can't watch videos of 3rd grade level education because it feels so condicending, since the videos are made for little children.
Quick little TL/DR for this; I have basically no education, can't teach myself because I go into a panic when I try. I wanna enroll in community college when I turn 18 in two years, but I'm scared I'll get denied because of my lack of education. And so I really wanna know how everyone here who has made it in, made it ☹
