2024.05.16 12:07 ImproveYourself19 Transitioning To Software Development. Advice?

Hey everyone, I’m in need of some advice regarding how I can transition from my current career into the career that I actually want. I’m struggling to figure out how to do this so I was wondering if anybody would be willing to give some guidance.
So a bit of background, I’m 22 years old living in the UK, currently undertaking an apprenticeship in property maintenance. Since my days in secondary school, I haven’t really had a clue what to do with my life and I’ve tried a range of things: Going to university twice and eventually dropping out both times, then working a number of different jobs (retail, construction, delivery, restaurants, just to name a few) which usually lasts for 6 months before I get fed up and leave. I understand that my reason for leaving these jobs consistently aswell as dropping out of university twice is because I have no interest in the work that I’m doing, therefore it’s not sustainable.
I was somewhat interested in construction after doing labouring for a few months but wasn’t sure which trade to specialise in, hence why I went the maintenance route as you get to learn all trades on a basic level and then I could make an informed decision from there. However once again, 6 months later I find myself in the same predicament wanting to leave. The job in itself can be tolerable but the physical demands and being on your feet for 8 hours a day drains me and takes away from the things I like to do in my free time - the main thing being exercising and going to the gym. I come home and I’m too tired to do anything but lay down, sleep and prepare for the next day. On top of this I don’t see much career progression past a certain point, other than a management role, which doesn’t interest me and also won’t provide the salary or work life balance I’d want for my future.
One career that has been in my mind for the past few years is software development and for many reasons. One, I like to build things, and software development will allow me to do so in an unconventional way, as in I don’t have to physically build things but rather mentally, which will keep me stimulated enough to somewhat enjoy the job. Secondly I believe once I get to a certain point in this career, I will have a greater work life balance, a much better salary and overall improved quality of life than if I were to stay in my current role. Third, I studied computer science at GCSE and got a high grade but still struggled with some aspects of coding, so I gave up and never took it further. Now I want to return and develop these skills - Over the past 3 years, I keep finding myself going back to coding and spending 2-3 hours a day learning new languages on websites like Codecademy etc and it comes fairly naturally to me since I’ve done it in the past and I actually kind of enjoy it but then I get caught up with life and I forget about it for a few months before returning again.
Im not entering this field as a get rich quick scheme, ideally I want to land a degree apprenticeship which will take 3-5 years, but will give me all of the fundamental knowledge, qualifications and experience that I need to become a full fledged developer. I’d personally rather do this than go the self taught route, although I’d still consider it.
So my initial plan was to spend the rest of this year studying 2-3 hours every day and building upon my basic knowledge of a few programming languages and then applying for some apprenticeships but there’s some problems that I’m going to face.
I’m already enrolled in an apprenticeship, so to land a new apprenticeship this year I would have to leave this current apprenticeship within the next few months, find a normal job and then apply for some software apprenticeships when positions open up, however this will add ANOTHER 2 jobs on my CV that only lasted 3-6 months and will kind of show the employer that I’m not committed - I have nearly 10 jobs on my CV since 2018 and all of those have lasted 6 months so it’s a repeating pattern.
My other option is to finish this current apprenticeship which doesn’t end until December 2025, which just seems super long to me and I’d much rather spend that extra year and a half working towards my software career plus the job is genuinely starting to make me feel depressed. However, completing this apprenticeship will show my future employers that I can be committed to something and I’ll also have an extra 1.5 years to work on my coding skills further, so there are benefits.
What should I do?
Is it even possible to land an apprenticeship this year with only 6 months to teach myself the basics?
Any feedback is greatly appreciated!
Sorry for the long post, and thank you for taking the time to read this.

2024.05.16 11:56 ALDO113A Help a struggling Christian (me) deal with this deconstruction of Paul and Bible-era perception of same-sex intercourse (basically saying "That kinda sex emasculates, and that's terrible") by AcademicBiblical if you can?

I was shared this while on a thankfully civilized talk. Here's the link, but I'll clean up the original text to be more digestible, maybe alter a few of it.
https://www.reddit.com/AcademicBiblical/comments/1c5ucxj/response_to_sikers_analysis_of_homosexuality_in
Here goes
1. Siker seems to be offering a scholarly version of Matthew Vines' argument
It being "Paul can't be condemning what we think of as committed loving homosexual relationships, because he was thinking of bad things like prostitution or uncontrolled-lust homosexuality."
So, the idea is to claim that Paul's letters can't be enlisted to authorize contemporary homophobia since he wouldn't have known about the kinds of relationships gay Christians want to have now.
I appreciate the contemporary ethics of Siker's approach since homophobia is dehumanizing and harmful, but the idea that this approach inherently reflects "liberal leanings" (Siker's claim) ignores how plenty of liberals reject homophobia without trying to enlist and sanitize the Bible as support.
2. I disagree with the Innocent Paul claim as Vines postulated
It is true that Greek, Roman, and Jewish sources do not often feature something resembling "a committed loving queer sexual relationship," but this is where confusion often sets in; there must be a distinction between
According to dominant ideals, powerful men were supposed to actively penetrate those below themselves on the social and gender hierarchy; a man who delighted in being penetrated by another man was by relative definition effeminate, and thus not to be celebrated. Women loving and sexually engaging with other women meant they weren't being used by (the right) men, and thus Greek and Roman writers tended to disparage, ridicule, and reframe female homoeroticism.
But our texts aren't direct sociological data, they reflect and think with dominant sexual ideologies, which by definition erased/reframed divergent sexual and gender expressions. This is why the likes of Amy Richlin,[1] Bernadette Brooten,[2] Deborah Kamen and Sarah Levin-Richardson,[3] and Jimmy Hoke**[4]** have argued that even though our sources erase, reframe, and distort people who liked any non-normative sex and relationships in Mediterranean antiquity, they still existed.
Bottom line: Writers like Paul could certainly have been aware of queer sexualities and relationships that were not enslaved prostitution or pederasty. Folks like Vines and Siker unintentionally reinscribe the association between homoeroticism and pedophilia/sexual violence.
For what it's worth, everyone should read Richlin's article from 30 years ago. Doesn't matter whether you agree with all of her arguments, it's brilliant scholarship.
3. Corpus point of view
There's a related debate about whether our texts even have a category for something like sexual orientation or simply imagine sex via other grids like active vs. passive/penetrator vs. penetrated (e.g., see Craig Williams' excellent sketch of these paradigms in Roman literature**[5]**).
The most common scholarly opinion in terms of Greco-Roman antiquity gender-sex studies is that our sources don't reflect ideas like sexual orientation, so orientational categories aren't historically helpful for reading our texts.
Other scholars like Richlin and Brooten have critiqued these positions, though they still forcefully argue that our sources thought with overtly hierarchical patriarchal ideologies about sex, like penetrator and penetrated. This final point is something on which Richlin is often misrepresented, which is bizarre since she wrote one of the classic books for understanding such dominant sexual ideologies.[6]
4. Paul Romana
Romans 1:18-32's basic point is that Paul discussed the total moral failure of Gentiles by sketching their (feminizing) descent into being dominated by their passions, one of the resultant illustrations of the Gentiles being their domination by their passions through transgressing the gendered order, exemplified by Gentile men losing sexual control of "their women" (i.e., these men are failed men from this angle) and each other in 1:26-27 - an inversion of the normative sexual order.
Paul treated male-male anal penetration as a straight illustration of Gentile corruption and domination by their passions. It's part of his grander point that Gentiles became (effeminately) enslaved by their passions (see Stanley Stowers' classic articulation of this decline-of-civilization reading of Rom 1:18-32**[7]**).
The key issue here is that there's no literary reason to think he only had in mind enslaved prostitution or pederasty, ANY male-male anal penetration upended the normative gender order. If anything, he might have indicated elsewhere that free men penetrating (raping) their slaves (gender irrelevant) was okay since that use of slaves was acceptable within many moral schemes; Paul never objected to it, and some passages potentially align with treating enslaved humans as legitimate non-marriage sexual outlets (e.g., as argued by Jennifer Glancy**[8]** regarding 1 Thess 4:4's εἰδέναι ἕκαστον ὑμῶν τὸ ἑαυτοῦ σκεῦος κτᾶσθαι("that each of you know his own vessel to possess in sanctification and honor")).
5. Linguistic flexibility
There's no reason to limit οὔτε μαλακοὶ οὔτε ἀρσενοκοῖται of 1 Cor 6:9 to prostitution; "malakos" means "soft"/"effeminate." In Greek texts, it often does refer to men who are penetrated sexually - obviously effeminizing - but a man who was unrestrained or excessive in his penetrating of women is likewise an example of "effeminate" in Greek sources.
ἀρσενοκοίτης's meaning remains debated, but the etymological game of making it "man-bedders" is problematic; rather than get bogged down in this lexical discussion, the larger point regarding Siker is, again, that the issue of whether "committed same-sex relationships" are in view is irrelevant.
Paul listed effeminate Gentiles as those who will not inherit the kingdom of God; a male prostitute is by definition effeminate for these discourses, but so would a man in a "committed same-sex relationship" who is anally penetrated.
6. Futility
I don't get why "liberal-leaning" scholars think they can salvage a moral Bible by handwaving Paul's (what we can redescribe as) homophobia, even if all of Siker's claims were true, Paul's logic is entirely premised on reprehensibly misogynist gender ideologies that animate his other arguments, so even trying to save the dude from Those Two Bad Verses leaves you with the steaming animal manure that is said premise.
Hope this helps!

2024.05.16 11:55 Mobile_Phone_Alone Some thoughts on Nidalee, level 15 with 1*

Now look, it's a given she IS a wonderful champ. Take that as read.
Low level though she is very draw dependant. You want her landmark (buffs transformers but more importantly gives enemies -1 attack) and the Bristlehog out early, not the six cost unit (which can admittedly be partially played for 2.)
I don't even know where I'm going with this. This must be true of other champs as well. Supporting champs and their followers really get in the way of your gameplay for the most part - true of most other champs.
I don't know what to say. She's wonderful when she's great, and truly disappointing with bad powers and a mediocre support package (but only because you have an idea already of how great she will be.) I've had fun, real honest to god fun with Gwen as support, but most support lately have been clunkers. It's not helped that most of the transformers you get offered in the shops are also a bit clunky.
I guess what I mean is she's frustrating to level her up, not as much fun as Lux2 was certainly.
Ah well, c'est la vie. She will be great in time.

I thought Paul was that based guy for giving credit to those two women (Phoebe and Priscilla) and stated that people regardless of origin or gender or status were one in the big IM
I hope I chose the right tag

2024.05.16 11:51 AeondrasDM Low-Level HIGH AC Spellcaster - best options

There has been a wealth of posts about building the highest AC characters, but I always stick up for the common DnD player that never ventures into the double digit levels or is able to fork out hoards of gold on armor. My goal was to build an all-round effective spellcaster with insane AC before a long beginner's campaign is over. I present you with three race options that cater to everyone's differing wishes. All with CON save proficiency (though not very high) for those concentration spells.
Within 6 levels awesome AC/spellcasting + an ASI, I think that's pretty amazing.

Max AC spellcaster build lvl 6
Warforged/Thri-Kreen +2 +1/Mountain Dwarf +2 +2 (Point Buy)
STR* 8 -1 0
DEX 15+1=16 +3 9 +3/4AC >Mountain Dwarf starts with a 17 here
CON* 12 +1 4
INT 15+2=17 +3 9 +3/4AC
WIS 13 +1 5
CHA 8 -1 0
(I didn't opt for heavy armor because by the time you can afford better options you will already
become a Bladesinger)
AC options:
Studded leather (12 +3/4AC dex) /Scale mail 14+2 dex / Thri-Kreen Chameleon Carapace - built in armor (13+3 dex) (race)
Warforged +1AC (race)
Shield +2AC (optional for beginning levels)
Fighter 1 (+1AC Defense)
Forge Cleric (+1AC)
Bladesinger Wizard 2 (+3AC INT boost)
Bladesinger Wizard 4 (+1AC INT boost)
*Situational: Shield spell Reaction (+5AC) /Shield of Faith, Concentration (+2AC)
Option 1: Warforged
Lvl 1: 20 AC Scale mail Warforged Fighter w shield=14+2+1+1+2=20AC - DISADV Stealth
Lvl 2: 21 AC +Forge Cleric +1AC - DISADV Stealth
Lvl 3: 21 AC +-Wizard 1 (Shield spell for +5AC) - DISADV Stealth
Lvl 4: 21 AC +-Studded leather warforged fighter forge cleric +Bladesinger = 12+3+1+1+1+3=21 AC - normal Stealth
Lvl 6: 22 AC +Bladesinger 4 +1 INT=+1AC - normal Stealth (ASI:half feat-INT score 18)
Pros/cons: Quick AC scaling & half-feat; dex suboptimal at lvl6
Option 2: Thri-Kreen
Lvl 1: 19 AC Thri-Kreen Chameleon Carapace Fighter w Shield = 13+3+1+2=19AC - ADV Stealth
Lvl 2: 20 AC + Forge Cleric +1AC - ADV Stealth
Lvl 3: 20 AC +- Wizard 1 (Shield spell for +5AC) - ADV Stealth
Lvl 4: 21 AC +Thri-Kreen Chameleon Carapace Fighter Forge Cleric + Bladesinger = 13+3+1+1+3= 21AC - ADV Stealth
Lvl 6: 22 AC +Bladesinger 4 +1 INT=+1AC - ADV Stealth (ASI: half feat-INT score 18)
Pros/cons: AC scaling slower, but adv on Stealth throughout and half-feat;dex suboptimal at lvl6. Also, since Thri-Kreen have 4 hands they don't need Warcaster to cast spells while fighting.
Option 3: Mountain Dwarf (25ft speed)
Lvl 1: 19 AC Scale mail Fighter w shield=14+2+1+2=19AC - DISADV Stealth
Lvl 2: 20 AC +Forge Cleric +1AC - DISADV Stealth
Lvl 3: 20 AC +-Wizard 1 (Shield spell for +5AC) - DISADV Stealth
Lvl 4: 20 AC +-Studded leather Fighter Forge Cleric Bladesinger = 12+3+1+1+3=20 AC - normal Stealth
Lvl 6: 22 AC ++Bladesinger 4 +1 INT=+1AC /DEX +1=Studded leather +4 - normal Stealth (ASI:+1/+1-DEX score 18/INT score 18)
Pros/cons: Longer wait and less move speed, but better dex skills, saves and weapon attacks at lvl6; no half-feat at lvl6
Of course for all of these builds the CON score isn't optimal, but nothing to do about that with Point Buy since we need a 13 in wis to multiclass into Cleric

2024.05.16 11:44 NoButterscotch3361 NRE or the end? Am I only poly for myself?

Been with my spouse for 8 years. Poly actively the past 3 years and my spouse only became actively poly the past year. In our otherwise great, open, honest, reliable marriage them being poly has caused the most problems recently.
My spouse has now met someone and after three months claims they are offical 'partners' and they are in love and its not just NRE. For my spouse this is the first person they have slept with since me 8 years ago. Prior to me they had been with one other person in a toxic relationship for 2 years
On the other hand I have dated alot, causally, had more relationships and generally have a wealth of more experiance in dating and sex. So when ive dated poly those experiences weren't so new and exciting in the same way.
My spouses character is such that there was always a concern that if they met someone it would be 'really really' serious because they aren't só 'fickle' about thier relationships and take time to warm up. I've never geuniely worried about this because I felt with our bond and history we would always be able to prioritise and manage our marriage. They lived a very sheltered and inexperianced life in terms of dating and sex and that was one of the reasons in my head we needed to be poly because I wanted them to be able to explore themselves and I knew eventually they would want to do that too - luckily I am poly so it felt ideal that they could still be with me and have space to do that.
But since they met this new person they seem to be a different person. After the first date they went on 2 dates the same week and then forgot to ring me on my birthday. The relationship has escalated unbeleivablly quickly. The other person is poly and they are learning and being exposed to a whole world that they previously were quite frigid about (they would never go to sex parties with me). They are super smitten but also not rational - they exposed me to herpes without telling me for example. They are a health freak almost OCD so i never thought something like that would be possible. At thier birthday party I planned and organised they totally forgot I was there (in thier own words) whilst there partner was there. They have had 3 months of dating this person freely as I was away and we agreed to not check in to avoid the arguments it was causing. They refuse to acknowlgde that all of this is even out of character or pretty quick. They just gone on defence. The worst part of it all is that they seem to have 'realised' that they are not happy in the marriage and that I need to make some changes. This 3 months relationship seems to have triggered the realisation which maybe they did feel but they are being so cold and detached and said they will not let me hinder or affect thier current relationship . They feel like alot of my issues around this is not being able to handle them being poly and that it's been completely unbalanced because they have accomedating my dating.
This is true however I feel I was a better hinge, I communicated every relationship I have in a level detail they wanted and any mistake I made were quickly addressed and never done again. If there was ever a moment I felt my spouse was really unhappy I pulled back until they were comfortable, ultimately for me I would never jepordise my marriage for another relationship. It hurts to see that they are willing, able and enthusiastically wanting to do that now.
Part of me want to see them as living out thier teenage years and that involves a level of wrecklessness thats totally out of character but maybe should be expected. The other Part of me thinks that maybe my loss of apetitie and nightmare that my life/my marriage is falling apart is actually my intution preparing me.
Or thirdly maybe I can't handle them being poly and now they finally are the reality is hitting me and thats why everything feels like the end of the world. But yes them falling in love and being so attached to someone is hurtful and makes me feel jealous however I dont think those feelings are anything to do with the hurt from the other stuff (neglecting and picking our marriage all of a sudden, making me feel second best, prioritising the new person with wild abadon, and the total disconnect we now suddenly have out of no where)
It's hard to give full context but I think it's important to understand the differences in our personality which is why this is all extra hard. I'm trying to rationlise and understand. I want to salvage our marriage and I 100% want to continue for both us to be poly but my heart can't take it this way. I have another partner atm to and im such a wreck, having panic attacts and barely eating..... I can't engage with them which is another layer of upset and complication. My partners NRE is even affectijg how I show up for my partner of 1 year. It's very complicated to explain to mono people só that's why im just trying to get advice here

2024.05.16 11:40 SirLouen The New Future of PVP in Warcraft Rumble is Coming in Season 6

… And it is going to be REALLY bad
After the announcement https://news.blizzard.com/en-us/warcraftrumble/24091199/claim-victory-in-season-6-to-unlock-new-rewards
I have come to some conclusions
First, it appears that they are introducing a new and 3rd currency. One wise guy once told me, that I should avoid at all cost any game with more than 1 currency, and here we go straight to the 3rd: The Valor
I was discussing with my game friends, how they could implement the announced Platinum Slot. Some speculations were like "a random slot among the army that beat the first raid", and others said that it would be like a selection slot like when you beat a level in a regular Dungeon.
But now we have the conclusion: You earn Valor points, and then you will be able to spend them accordingly to get Platinum Slots
What does this mean?
  1. Valor points are going to be probably very limited. Opening a new currency means that it would be probably purchasable. More P2W content.
  2. With Platinum Slots, we get +1 level. This means that people will be able to unlock level 31. Level 31 finally unlocks the level 11 of PVP. Meaning that big whales, with level 30 minis and the platinum slot, will unlock another level of unfairness.
  3. And the worst part: Level 10 minis have been prohibited for months. Now that some people are reaching there, here comes a new degree of prohibitive-ness with level 11. If level 10 was historically very expensive, level 11 is going to be massively expensive
Basically, it will cost $50 per unit to upgrade from level 10 to level 11 (not counting the valor)
  1. 20K energy for the Arclight Energy ~ 4K gold
  2. 1 Legendary Core ~ 4K gold
  3. 25 stars x 90 ~ 2K gold
  4. 8 × 25K (200K gold for base 20) experience Gems (500gold per gem) ~ 4K gold
Total gold = 14K gold
The price of gold WITH offers is around 300 units per $1 in the best scenario (could be worse in most cases, and much worse if you buy straight from the gold store). So this means that approximately we are taking about $50 to upgrade from Level 10 to Level 11 in SLOW MODE because, you have to wait for the 8 gems to appear in the daily shop + you have to wait for the legendary cores to appear + you have to wait for the 25 stars to appear.
Most whales run in FAST MODE, which means:
  1. Buying GOLD straight from the gold store $100 = 12K gold, which means only 120 golds per $1.
  2. Then they purchase minis in the GRID even not needing them because they have already maxed stars, their sole purpose is to get those fast 10K and 25K gems not waiting for the daily store.
With this method, they happen to spend a ton more gold (mostly because of the repeating minis and the movements of minis in the GRID to design the T or L figures). Plus, the significantly lower rate of $/per gold compared to best offers (almost 1/3). Hence, for a typical whale, a level 11 will cost approximately twice for the GRID + 3 times more for the extra gold exchange, this is like $50 x 6 = $300 per level 11.
Most whales that have been spending $10K on many mobile games won't see this as big money because with $9K they could be upgrading 30 minis to level 11 (if they don't already have them, and I'm not counting valor because I don't really know if it will be free with Raids ultimately)
This is the future of PVP. No single real competitive like Clash Royale SK Calalas players would ever consider this worth. It's plain obnoxious, the PVP ecosystem they are building.
The only thing I know, is that unless there is a PVP LEVEL 10 cap, I'm done with this game by next season, because Level 30 cap is not going to happen:
Boost Slots increase the base XP of any Mini placed there to level 20, this is the max level a Mini can reach via XP only. An additional 10 levels can be obtained from unlocking talents (+3), increasing the Mini’s rarity (+4), and having them in the correct Gold army slot (+3). The addition of Diamond Slots (+4) will increase the total level that a Mini can reach to 31.
TL;TR: Platinum Slots will unlock Level 11 PVP and this will finally kill the game (if it was not already dead)

2024.05.16 11:39 IncomeTraditional995 Recovering Data Scientist here, what must I do?

Heads up!! sorry if this is a rant about my situation but I gotta get some help/opinion about how do I go about my career. I was fresh out of Uni (with a Masters in Data Engineering) and I was hired by a Media Agency as a Data Scientist 9 months ago. Before this I was a Data Science working student at a SaaS company where I learnt a lot about Reinforcement Learning, Azure Cloud, DevOps processes etc. It felt like a huge step forward as it was the first time I was seeing such services used in prod. Coming back to the time I was hired into my full time position, the Data Team before I joined consisted of 8 people 2 Senior Data Scientists and 2 mid-level, a guy who was like a product manager kind of person never knew what he actually contributed and 3 analysts (Have 0 knowledge about BI tools or code) they just had to analyse simple social media data. I was hired as a Junior Data Scientist (After 3 of the Data Scientists were fired) and to my shock I saw that there was no data infrastructure setup, I mean they had no data infrastructure at all. The data scientists used to run their own stuff on the computers never used git. No code base of what they did to refer to. They would throw up ad-hoc tasks and we had to figure a way out to get data by ourselves and do some analytics on it, data was shared as excel sheets on teams. There was no collaboration or contribution. I was left to work with 1 senior data scientist who was completely demotivated as all the others were fired. I hated the way things worked and I took it as my sole responsibility to build the data infrastructure and try to gain some relevant experience for myself. My goal was to build a simple infrastructure that resembles an end to end data engineering workflow. I started with figuring out all the data requirements, built API's to get data where its available, scrapers to get data when its not there. They were not ready to give me resources for any cloud solutions, hence they had a storage server and I used that to host my PostgresDB. For the fun of it I wanted learn Kubernetes and so I just setup a kind cluster there, used airflow as a data orchestrator and ran ETL pipelines. Soon the other data scientist can on board and was motivated to work along with me, we built some nice dashboards and provided useful insights. This is when we actually got some validation from management that our team even exists. All this was done on the side as I had to solve some NLP tasks like topic clustering, sentiment analysis and crunching some numbers and plotting visualisations. I can just feel it that this is nothing compared to what others would be working on, as I was a fresher and I built all this with what I learnt and reading Joe Reis's book. Current stack: FastAPI, Airflow, pandas, looker studio, Tableau, k8s, Little bit of CI/CD, Redis, Postgres, Docker. I feel like after this there is nothing much to build up on. What can I do to gain more experience to land a better job or better myself as I feel like i'm plateauing right now. I see all this talk about Pyspark, RabbitMQ, Hive, snowlake, databricks etc., and I do not know what to do about it.
Any help or guidance would be great. Cheers!!
