While my brother 18m was going under emergency surgery for his appendix they found an abnormal reading on the ekg, they immediately followed up with an echo or mri test and found a thick heart muscle. Knowing that this is genetic and can be pass down from one of your parents has made me very anxious. The thing is I have a different dad from my two brothers we’re only related through my mom. And I told my mom if she has any heart related conditions or heart related deaths in her side of the family and she said nothing she knows of her mum never had it her sisters haven’t been found to have it and her dad hasn’t been found to have it as far as we know there’s no history of it in my mums side of the family. My mom also has had a few ekgs and has been sent home with a 24 heart monitor and nothing has been found in her either. My mom also told me that my brothers dad’s dad had a bad heart he didn’t pass away because of it but it was known. But I don’t know if it’s hcm related. I don’t have any symptoms of the disease I’ve measured my pulse and it’s always in the normal range only high when I’m anxious.

I realised once I got it, that I could have used it much earlier in my life. My dad and mom both have ADHD and my brothers too. My difficulties with math, anxiety and lack of focus or motivation... I never realised. And it makes me a bit sad it took so long. I still have slight imposter syndrome over it, like do I actually have ADHD? But- yeah.. think so. Anyone else feel the later ages getting diagnosed type of regret?

Hi Im an AS student who's studying Computer Science (with little interest), Chemistry and Maths. I initially wanted to go with designs since im an artsy kind of person. I have a vast variety of interests in Maths, Digital Forensics, fashion designs, interior designs, architecture, animation, editing and more. I know these interests do not interlink whatsover, but i need help becos i cant dissapoint my mom. I believe i can do THE BEST in things i like doing but my mom says that i should have a solid degree (basically a comp degree or any other thats stereotypical). I want to make her proud and live a peaceful day jus fr once. My dad is kinda a failure (ik it sounds rude but....) and he also doesnt suppourt my education. I suppose I am looking for some validation, even as pathetic as it may sound, but I FINALLY graduated college
Most of my friends and family do not seem to give much of a shit about it and aside from the standard “good job” or “congrats,” it just feels so whatever to all of them I will admit that I just turned twenty five and this is something I should have done a few years ago like many of the other people in my life but my college experience was a bit unconventional lol
Yes, i understand that there is no “correct” way to go about your education, but growing up in the northeast it definitely deviates from the norm
I originally got into a polytechnic institute on a cross country/track scholarship to study environmental engineering and was attracted to attending a top 50 school and knew engineering was a lucrative profession (hey i was 18 and knew i needed a scholarship if i wanted to attend college so this worked)
However i fucking hated math and running at this point, and eventually dropped out after my first year and started attending community college at home and tried to figure out what my next steps were going to be. During this time I really struggled with my eating disorder to the point that i had to do residential treatment and once again…drop out of school
So anyways, after 5 months of treatment, I moved to San Diego while working at a summer camp to get away from home and shit just really hit the fan and found my way back home to the east coast after 8 months and essentially was disowned by my mother
At this point, i had no financial support and after working at a bar and odd jobs I realized the only way I can move up in the world was with a college degree So I was sleeping on a twin mattress on the concrete floor of my dad’s basement and I managed to afford ONE class at a community college at 20 which launched the long and exhausting quest to get my undergrad.
I was also dating a god awful guy at the time who was 10 years older than me and active in his addiction and took every chance to remind me that i was a piece of shit
But I wanted to prove everyone wrong and told myself that I would do it and get this shit done, somehow and someway As we all know, college is not cheap and had to do some questionable things to afford school (I think you guys can assume what i mean…thnx seeking)
So whatever, this shit took me seven years and I completely turned my life around during this period. I found a job in a field I was passionate about and worked my ass off to prove myself and move up in my position so that i could earn more money
Over the course of six years - I managed to pay for my entire degree on my own without loans, live on my own in a beautiful apartment, get out of a toxic relationship and found the man of my dreams who only loves and supports me, buy a new car, strengthen the bonds between my friends and family, develop a healthy relationship with my body and self, get into graduate school, and graduate SUMMA CUM LAUDE
Waaaaaaah idk if you told nineteen year old me that this is where i would be by my 25th birthday, i wouldnt have believed it but here i am fucking am and yeah i fucking did it But I suppose no one cares or do not even know the lengths in which I took in order to get here or how much this degree actually means so maybe this is just an off my chest and now i can finally move on and forget it because it wraps up one chapter and now we are on to the next wooooo

I'll try keep it simple as this will be 1 of millions of stories I have to tell eventually.
I (31f) grew up most my life thinking my "1st dad" was my bio dad, he passed when I was 14 (we weren't close, he was a junkie and I hardly ever seen him) I had to close the lid on his coffin, I helped carry him, I helped plan his funeral and everything that came with it. He's in my birth cert, I legally have his last name and even have it tattooed on me. (this adds a bit of context somewhat)..
Fast forward to my 21st birthday, and my NM decided it was the perfect time to "joke" about how my 1st dad might not even be my dad 🤦 I'm hard headed so I instantly started pushing for more info and wondering wtf she was playing at.
She eventually gave me a name of who she thought could possible my Father, I got in contact with him and his now ex wife(there's stories about her too) and we got the process of DNA testing started..
Shock horror, "1st dad" wasn't my bio dad, when "2nd dad" called me with the DNA results I was incredibly overwhelmed, scared and confused as anyone would be..
My NMs reaction when I told her?? " Why are you crying I always told you 1st dad might not be your bio dad" (she never EVER mentioned it before in my entire life even though she'll argue til she's blue in the face that she did tell me)...
She still to this day swears she had always told me that there was a chance but a lot of things over the years that she swears happened or didn't happen I found to be lies so I trust nothing she says anymore.
Since then me and 2nd dad have had an amazing relationship, considering he went from no bio kids, a wife and 2 step kids to no wife or step kids and a 21yr old daughter he handled it like a champ.. his family have accepted and loved me since the day the DNA results came back.. we just all wish we got that first 21 years together too.

Sorry for the long post! First time posting ever. Sorry if it's not very concise.
I (26f) come from a very large, complicated family. When I was two, my bio parents divorced, and since then (through multiple marriages and divorces) I have gained a plethora of siblings, all of whom I love dearly. Of the seven siblings I have gained, three of them were also birthed by bio mom (50f, who will be referred to as Gaslighter from now on). These three siblings are "Lucy" (28f), "Birdie" (17f), and "Topher" (14m) (all names changed). For context: Gaslighter had abandoned me twice in my childhood - once when she and my father ("John" 53m) first divorced, and once when she and my step father (53m) separated. While the first time was not memorable due to my age and the shorter time span, the second was when I was 14 and I had no contact with her for THREE YEARS. No holidays, no birthdays, nothing. On top of this, when she was around, she was emotionally and verbally abusive to me. She tried to keep me from my father, talked crap about him constantly (including trying to convince me at age 7 that John wanted me aborted), she would not let me play with my sister or friends, and she consistently fat shamed me my entire life. I was a very athletic kid, so I was not by any stretch "fat", but because I had a large appetite due to exercise and medications I needed, I was dubbed "miss Piggy" and "the vulture", and Gaslighter would screech "caw caw" like a vulture if I grabbed seconds. Due to this, I've been struggling with eating disorders since I was 10. She also forced me to raise Topher from birth, as she had forced Lucy to raise Birdie. Now, there's a bunch of other examples I can include, but this is already a lot. So, to the story... I've known for a few years that I would end up cutting Gaslighter out of my life, between the childhood trauma that continued into adulthood and how she treated everyone I love. That being said, I was planning on playing nice until Birdie and Topher were both adults, because I was afraid that pissing Gaslighter off would have negative repercussions on them. I had told Lucy, Birdie, and Topher about my plan and they were all very understanding and on board. For everything I have been through, they have too. The last decade has just been about survival until they were legally free. But in the last year, I have been diagnosed with PTSD from the abuse endured by Gaslighter, and her behavior has become more erratic and terrifying. Over Christmas, I decided that I couldn't wait another 4 years, so I began distancing myself, hoping to just fade away from her. Interactions with Gaslighter had begun inciting my panic attacks, and for my own health, I needed to get out. THIS is where the problem starts. Obviously, Birdie is almost an adult, and she has her own plans to dip out as soon as she turns eighteen. That being said, Gaslighter is actively tightening her grip, making Birdie's life miserable. When I told my siblings that I was going to just ghost Gaslighter, Birdie freaked out. She asked me to not ghost, but to tell Gaslighter that I no longer wanted a relationship with her. Because I knew I wouldn't be able to face her without a breakdown or caving in (this woman has an amazing ability to make herself the victim), I offered a compromise: I would write a letter and mail it to her, and I would wait to completely cut her off until it was mailed. Birdie was happy with this solution. I took my time writing the letter because the stress of the situation was overwhelming and I was still terrified of Gaslighter. Besides that, the tiny part of me that always needed Gaslighter to be a REAL mother to me wanted to keep giving her chances. So, I spent countless nights crying to my fiance about the situation. I did write the letter, but I never got around to mailing it because life was crazy with final exams and family events and work. I still intended to send it, but just never got to it. This past weekend, my father called me. John was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer when I was 15, and, for the following 4 years, I took on the brunt of caring for him. I took him to almost all of his appointments, made sure he had his medicine, talked with doctors, made sure he ate and the house was clean when he was too sick to do it. He never asked me to do any of it, but this was during the time in my life where Gaslighter was MIA, so I had the freedom to spend my time where I wanted, and I chose to take care of him. I have no regrets whatsoever, and I'm glad for that extra time, because I seldom spent time with him as a child. John was the first person who I felt actually understood me, and we had a lot in common, so those years were some of the best in my life. He really is one of my favorite people. Because of the harsh treatments, however, his health has been a mess since his diagnosis. But we have all just been happy to have him around, especially since the doctors told us there was a 6% chance he would survive past 5 years. It has now been 11. While John is still in remission, he recently received some distressing news. In the phone call last weekend, he told me that he will be paralyzed from the waist down within the year, but more than likely, within a few months. I was devasted. I had a breakdown that devolved into my hatred of Gaslighter and her treatment of myself and my father, and something switched inside me. I truly no longer felt any love or care for that woman. I decided that night that I was done. I blocked her on everything and decided I would never see or speak to her again. Birdie obviously isn't happy about it. I know I didn't keep to my promise about the letter. But I just can't justify ever interacting with her again, and I know that letter will do nothing but add fuel to Gaslighter's "woe is me" narrative. So, I guess I am asking if I am the a-hole for not keeping my promise and just ghosting, despite possible repercussions or the feelings of my siblings?

but recently i remembered an event from my younger years, my mother was friends with a woman who she would leave me with whenever she needed to go soemwhere, the woman had a daughter about two years older than me. (i was seven she would be nine) and her father was an alcoholic. the girl constantly did things that i didn't like such as cutting my hair or coloring my face with markers. she would take me to a dark spot in my room and make fun of of me saying that im her doll. i would tell my mom but she would brush it away. one time when we were there her dad was drinking and she grabbed me and turned the light off in the room and grabbed me by my waist and i said no i don't want and she was lying on me and kept saying that in her teddy bear and and that she would squeeze me to death. she would then ask me if i knew about sex, i was uncomfortable but i w was a child and couldn't say anything. i then remebwr she kissed me on the lips and on the forehead. i don't remember anybting after hardy i think she just let me go and we went our own ways and i never thought anything of it at the time and she told me not to tell anyone., but now it makes me a bit uncomfortable.

My mom has been a little too close with an in law who is married to one of her sisters. Months ago, she confessed to me that the in law has feelings for her. I warned her that if she keeps talking to him, this wasn't going to end well. I thought she listened to me. Time went by and one day i see a flirty message on her phone. It was from the inlaw. A few more things happened that my sibling and i noticed. I couldn't just stand there and do nothing, so i told my dad EVERYTHING. Later that day, we discussed the issue as a family.

On the bright side, my never-jw dad is more convinced that JWs aren't much holier that "worldy" people. And my aunt, who is a JW, seems to view me more positively now.

Hi, I’m really close to leaving this job for personal reasons but I’m most struggling with one specific thought. I'm 18 and 5'3", which is the height I've been since middle school. I'm not gonna get any taller. This is what my genes has to offer; this is the best it's gonna get. From here on out I'll only get shorter due to age. I seriously cannot fucking do this anymore. I graduate high school in four weeks, and I've been told it only gets harder after graduation... by people way taller than me. I can't even imagine how hard it would be for me.
I've never been in any kind of relationship either. I've never even had so much as a hug from someone who wasn't my family member. I barely have any friends either. The only people I have to talk to are my parents and my therapist. Both of which have done fuck all for me. I especially hate talking to my parents about my height; every time it just ends in frustration because I refuse to accept the blue pilled cope shit that they try to shove down my throat. Yesterday my step dad was telling me that I'm overreacting and that his cousin is a 5'2" multi-millionare gigachad who has a beautiful wife and didn't let his height define him and blah blah blah (my step-dad is 6'3"). I asked my step-dad if he'd be as confident as he is now if he was my height, he said absolutely because height doesn't matter.
I fucking hate this shit, I hate being lied to by my own fucking family. I find it especially funny when my mother tries to tell me that girls don't care about height, because not only is her husband above six feet, but her ex boyfriend was 6'4". The only reason why I didn't end up tall is because my mom was forced to marry and have a have a kid with a 5'7" man. If it'd been her choice, she absolutely would have had a kid with someone who could be in the NBA. Oh yeah, and I almost forgot to mention that my mom and dad are second cousins; just another reason why I want to kill myself. If I didn't have family that cared about me, I would've already done it. And if I'm being honest, I kinda wish I didn't have family that cared about me because then I could take my life guilt free, knowing that I didn't cause anyone any pain.

Not sure where to begin but I've always suspected my younger step brother has undiagnosed autism with sociopathic behavior (speculation, based off his behaviors). Whenever someone SUGGESTS to my stepdad that he's a little bit off he gets very upset as if you are attacking him directly. For context, my brother does not really interact with ANYONE not even family, he never initiates conversation, if he does speak to you it's always 1 worded answers, he's always had trouble in school failing every year but is constantly getting moved up to the next grade (he is now in 10th grade, I've been noticing him failing since about 4th grade), he curses at my parents whenever they get him mad (he doesn't get disciplined in any way for being disrespectful, this is not true for my other siblings), he is not great with social cues and has inappropriate reactions to minor things. He spends most of his free time on his electronics, yes he is an iPad kid and my parents have never monitored his activity. He is the youngest of 5 kids.
The first time my nDad actually realized something might be wrong was the summer before he went to high school. My parents threw him a graduation party for finishing middle school. In hindsight, this party was for my parents and not for him because he was in his room the whole time and he would have never wanted a party anyway. Anyways the next day they see that he splattered black paint all over his room and wrote random things all over his walls (since then he does this whenever something gets him upset). My parents then ask me to find a therapist, which I was very glad to do because this should've been done years ago. I set everything up and took him to all his appointments (my parents were very hands off), his therapist at the time suggested getting him tested for autism and my dad did not receive it well. He then had a conversation with my brother where he "promised" to get out of his shell and be more outgoing within a years time. Again my nDad was STILL in denial, I couldn't believe it. Eventually the therapist ghosted us.
Fast forward to now, he is at risk of getting kicked out of school due to constantly cyberbullying his peers at school. He even got beat up at school because of it. The school reported him to the school board because he continued the cyberbullying after getting suspended for it a bunch of times. I simply suggested to my dad that he take away his electronics away because he is repeating the same behaviors, and he blew up on me telling me I don't pay the phone bill & that I need to get my life in order before telling him what to do. I then said I see why my enabler mom just stopped mentioning anything to him about this particular sibling and he lost it, threatening to kick me out the house.
I just feel bad because I feel like everyone is failing my younger brother and he is unable to get the help he needs and I am seriously worried about his future. I don't see him being able to be a fully independent adult, I cannot picture him having a job or going to college but my dad is always telling him he needs to be able to do these things, but where are the tools to help him get there?

As-salamu-Alaikum,
I honestly have no idea how to start this. I just want advice on the matter. Sorry for the long post and do tell me if this counts as sharing other's sins so I can delete it. I just want advice.
I think this all started when I said I wanted to wear the hijab. My mom supported me in the beginning and even encouraged my to tell my dad, who completely flipped out on me when I first told him. He eventually accepted this and apologised, but I can tell he still doesn't like the idea. Since then, I've had relatives and family friends comment on how I'm too young, that I'll end up taking it off, that I should wait a while, that I'll have to wear a burkini...etc, and it's just really irritating. I think all this ended up rubbing off onto my mom because she also started saying stuff like how she's never seen anyone suddenly decide they wanted to wear the hijab. I've wanted to wear it for a year now and only recently told them because I was too scared. I've told them that, but I guess they either don't believe me or have forgotten... I don't know.
I've had them make jokes about me, calling me the names of extremists groups or stereotypically religious characters from movies.
Some of them don't understand why I don't want them walking in front of me when I pray or how terrible it is for me when I think I might miss a prayer or how they can't just keep entering the room I'm going to pray in and then ask me to leave when I tell them to lower the volume on their phone so I can focus.
Once, I wanted to discuss some religion stuff with my mom and she randomly told me something along the lines of not to making that my sole focus so that I don't become extremist. She was completely serious. I was so hurt and confused because:

1. I felt it really wasn't that deep.
2. I felt like she didn't know or understand me in general.
3. She knows I have other interests, I don't understand why she would even say that.

Recently, my mother told my sister to raise the volume on her phone when I was about to pray, just to get me to leave the room. I decided that I would, obviously, but I was too shocked by what she, so I told her that she shouldn't do that because it's prayer we're talking about here. She got mad and told me that she didn't like this "Sheikha" phase I was going through. At that point, I immediately left the room.
We're all Muslims btw.
I just don't know what to do. I need advice. How do I move forward? Do I ignore them?

So im a 20 yrss old female and have a sister who is 23 . So my sister lets name her Jane she has ,let’s say she likes white men , in our family that’s what most of us believe , marry a white man happy life. So my sister is dating this man who is 36 years old right now from Australia lets name him John . Personally I don’t think the age gap is good between them . Since my mom and dad have a 20 something age gap and there marriage is not good apart from that ta my dad had 2 wives prior my mom and there marriage is not good.Anyways John and Jane met on a dating site and they started talking,after two weeks this man started telling my sister that he wants to come and marry her and how he will do everything for her when November arrives . Obviously I was against it because I thought it was too soon and I voiced my worries to her , but when I did she stopped updating me about her relationship with her man since I’m jealous of her. My cousin : Vivi is the one who is always told about John. John has another wife who he tells my sister they have divorced and he has two teenagers one aged 13 and another 17 who live in Italy with their mom. John works as a traffic patrol I think so . My English isn’t perfect so bear with me.Moreover I was told John had gotten into an accident and lost his upper teeth and lower teeth except one tooth on each sides . Anyways after John told my sister about the marriage my sister started doing everything to please him I mean everything.John started asking for my sister’s ndes every day and I mean every day and also videos of her bathing n*ked , my sister works as a teacher at my mothers school and even if she is at work John would call her and demand her to you know send him videos and if not he would threaten her with not coming over to marry her because apparently John had already talked to my parents about it and to Jane she thinks that it will not be good . Anyways it continued like that till last week when I had to tell Jane that she should stop talking to him he is not a good man John doesn’t respect my sister . Personally I thinking relationship there should be respect between couple , also John is so controlling, obviously they met through dating app then one day John told Jane to delete the dating app cause he had seen her over there but my question is , what was he doing over there? John had once asked my sister to sleep with another man so that she can prepare for when he “comes “ to the country. God. It’s so absurd , when I told my sister obviously she just nodded and didn’t take my word for it. When I tried talking to my mom at first she agreed with me but Today John had sent Jane20 dollars , 20 and that made All of them stick together and think it’s a good idea , I told my boyfriend about all this and he told me about how wrong it was . I dont know , my moms reason for all of this is that as long as my sister gets to go to Australia it will be fine she can leave the man , but I don’t think it’s that easy. So am I the AIT for not liking my sisters boyfriend?

When I first lost Chloe, I wasn’t sure how to deal with the situation. I came across this Reddit board and spent a couple of days reading other peoples contributions. I thought that if maybe I contributed a couple of times and helped maybe one or two people with what they were going through it would help me. It has been good, but I don’t know how to deal with the situation I’m in. I know I have posted and made reference to my situation but now I feel that if I share it maybe that will help. Chloe was 12 and had a few health problems starting but nothing serious. I’m 50 and my mother is 75 and we decided to celebrate our birthdays by going to Paris again. We thought that we would go before one or both of our health falls apart and before Chloe gets to the age of being really sick (our last dog lived to be 18). We asked our vet probably 4 times if anything serious was going on and if there was any reason not to go to Paris. He kept assuring us that it would be fine. I’ll try to give you a brief history that may help. I am pretty much sick all the time. I can go a month or two without leaving the house. We are both retired and then with Covid, my mom was here all the time. So Chloe got used to having someone always around. I started taking a supplement that changed the way all my auto immune diseases were making me feel, so that’s when we decided to go ahead and go to Paris. I started getting out to go to the mall and it freaked her out. She would wind around my feet like a cat trying to get me to stop tying my shoelaces. She didn’t know what to do without me at the house. It freaked her out like I said. Looking back, we should have spread out those trips and got her used to both of us being gone a little longer each time, overnight maybe. But like the vet said he thought she was doing OK and it wouldn’t be a problem. We left for Paris and on the 4th day I broke my ankle at the Eiffel Tower. We started getting reports from home that Chloe wasn’t doing too great. We have a pet sitter that is absolutely fabulous. Chloe loves her so much. So by the time I broke my ankle, we started realizing that Chloe was very sick and that she was dying. Our wonderful pet sitter went to the vet and just sat with her so she wouldn’t be alone. I threw on an orthopedic boot with a broken ankle and we started traveling home. We never stopped. We just went from Paris to New York to Dallas and to Mexico. We didn’t make it. We asked the vet if he thought she was suffering waiting for us and he said that she was so we couldn’t let her continue that way. We said goodbye to her over the phone in the Dallas airport terminal. I hope that she got some comfort from our voices, but, as I think I’ve written before, the guilt is all consuming. She deserved better. She was our baby. The problem that I have been having since she died is that it’s like she vanished. When I got home, I wouldn’t let the maid come because I was searching for her, her smell. I laid by the table that she laid under. I tried to get as close to under the bed where she laid. I just kept saying “I can’t find her. I can’t remember what she looked like the last time we walked out the door. I don’t remember that moment.” The pet sitter was very nice, she picked up and took away her bowl, her leashes, her food, everything to do with her so that we wouldn’t have a such a sad homecoming, but it just made it seem like she was never here. I spent so much time upstairs that my association with her was the noise she made under the bed and when she wanted out of the door or when she started up the stairs to my bed. At night she was in the bed with me. I didn’t take her on walks or anything so I couldn’t imagine her as we walked along or anything. I have been searching for some kind of visceral connection to her in the house. But she’s just was gone. I think I hear her sometimes. Honestly, I don’t think I have grieved as much as I should. I always said that I started grieving her loss the moment I met her. I know it sounds crazy, but we used to get teary-eyed when she was six or seven or eight. We just loved her that much and couldn’t imagine our life without her. I would always say that we shouldn’t waste time thinking about something that was going to happen in the future. She was just that special. It was if you looked into her big brown eyes you could see her soul. This is too long of a post as it is, so I’ll just stop now.

My parents routinely bring this up and it just seems like it’s time to let it go, but I’m wondering if I really did something very horrible. A similar situation is happening now and I’m wondering how differently I should handle it. For background my mom was physically abusive to me and I ‘escaped’ from her insanity about 6 months ago.
I got engaged in Spring 2020, and that summer (so early Covid days) I was a state employee and was asked to work at a Covid test site which soon became a vaccine site. This was 1.5 hours from my house and the hours were 6am-6pm so I was out of my house from 430am-730pm. It was at least 5 days/week, sometimes more. I was so exhausted that I started to lose my vision in 1 eye, that went away as soon as I stopped working those hours. My husband and I also had a small farm, multiple rental properties, there was just a lot going on.
My mom was making my wedding planning an absolute nightmare, she would call me and scream at me bringing up things from before I was even born (issues with my biological dad), sit my husband and I down for hours long discussions about why our wedding planning was selfish, etc. The issue for her was that we wanted a small wedding with only our families (25ish people) and my sister was having a huge $100k+ wedding that fall and we were planning on our small wedding being around that time as well, because I was told I have fertility issues and may not be able to become pregnant so we wanted to move things along quickly. I don’t even know why I entertained her opinions and these conversations but I was just terrified of upsetting her because she would unleash this rage that left me emotionally decimated for days or weeks at a time (I’m in therapy now and feel a lot better). Since our wedding was small we didn’t need any money for it from her and needed very little input from my parents, but I did let them invite some of their friends after enough arguing (it was super awkward and I hated it) and tried to entertain these conversations because they’re my parents.
July 2020 my mom went in for a routine surgery and I guess because she’s in absolutely terrible shape due to never exercising and eating junk food every day plus whatever error the doctor may have made, it turned into a near-death experience and she had to be in the hospital for 2ish weeks and after she went home she had to go back for another week. Lots of tests, infections, resulting in her being discharged ‘healthy’ and she went back to her normal life.
This was the height of my work at the Covid site and I was partly in charge of managing the site. The hospital she was it was an hour away from my house, the opposite direction as the test site. I got coverage and visited my mom a 2 or 3 times the first week she was in the hospital. This was during the heat of the screaming episodes she had at me so I felt really uncomfortable but pretended to be a good daughter and brought her everything I could, like self care packages, sat with her, did her hair, she’d text me when I was a few minutes from the hospital asking me to pick her up some smoothies or sandwiches from a place in the next town over and I’d just do it. When she went home I brought her healthy ready to eat groceries and homemade food that rotted in their refrigerator, while they asked for more. My stepdad was fully available this whole time and I cooked and brought him food too.
My mom would complain that I wasn’t involving her in my wedding plans enough while in the hospital. That was something I didn’t want to discuss with her bc of how stressful the conversations were, I tried to tell her we can talk about it later, but she got really upset and so I gave in and updated her on the progress. Immediately it turned into a fight and she screamed and cried at me. My stepdad called me and absolutely eviscerated me for ‘doing this’ to my mom. I was in shock and didn’t visit her for about a week after that.
A few months after her hospital situation, the calls started coming where she’d cry on the phone about how I never visited her at the hospital, I abandoned her, I’m horrible and selfish, etc. She got her medical records and read through them to try and make a lawsuit which never happened and apparently the only thing she saw in the records was that I was never visiting.
Yes, I could have visited more. But how much more? I wonder what was actually expected of me? I have a life, I was going into a panic freeze mode when I thought of her and completely shut down when I saw her. I was trying my best to balance everything. But now this situation is brought up and I don’t know what to think about it. Now my grandma is in the hospital and it’s turning into the same situation and I don’t know what to do or think.

I am 31F and my mom is 61F.
My parents had my sister on accident, got married and divorced after a very toxic and abusive relationship, then had me on accident when my sister was ten.
My mom grew up in extreme poverty, abuse, and neglect, and barely knew how to read when she met my dad, only had a fifth grade education. My dad was a carpenter.
I ended up growing up with my dad since he got custody and my mom went in and out of the mental hospital. She lived with her mom and was an off and on janitor and then went on disability for mental illness (schizoaffective).
Throughout growing up I would visit her on weekends and she would get plastered drunk many times, screaming and yelling at me, I would hide and call dad or sister for a ride home. They would pick me up hyperventilating but acted like everything was fine and dad would drop me off there again. She would also promise to do things and then just lay in bed depressed. My dad and stepmom were also abusive. I would tell my mom things and she would talk really bad about my dad and stepmom and sister (who won’t talk to our mom), to the point where my stepmom and sister claim I’m brainwashed to not like them. I think they’re all abusive but idk. I’m gaslit extremely.
Anyways, on and off I have blocked my mom and stopped talking to her. She can provide me comfort and someone to talk to since I’m not close with family, but sometimes is mean and abusive and extremely suffocating I feel?
She is a chain smoker and now has clogged arteries. I don’t like smoke at all and she would shame me for being uncomfortable around her smoking. She also caretakers her disabled brother and they live together in a very run down place with their disability checks.
She had to get a stent put in last week. I took off work to take her home from the hospital and be there a while. I felt like anything I do is never enough, she asked last minute if I could take off the day of to be with her during the surgery (her sister planned to), then complained that I didn’t spend the night at the hospital with her, kept telling other patients god bless them, burst into tears to the nurse saying she was thankful to the doctor, then kept acting like I was bored and not happy to be at the hospital, and kept insisting she pay for my parking in front of others like I didn’t want to pay, etc. I was with her 7 hours that day and as soon as I got home she said she would have liked me to stay longer and asked why didn’t I take her on a drive with me afterward, that I took spontaneously to destress.
Today she called on my lunch break and asked if I could come over and do her laundry in the basement. She is still healing from surgery. I am working today. She offered to buy me dinner but I’m on a diet and don’t want Chinese food. Her social worker was coming and offered to do her laundry but she didn’t want her to se her underwear. My uncle is being watched for a couple weeks while my mom heals.
I just hate picking up my mom’s calls and feel awful about it. I didn’t really want to help her with her laundry and had plans to go to the gym after work. I feel burdened with my mom sometimes. My sister won’t associate with her.
A couple of years ago my mom stopped taking her meds for mental health and ended up calling an ambulance on herself and went to the mental hospital. She had me on all her emergency contacts. Hospital called me to pick up my uncle so I took him and had to watch him and find care for him for a week. My sister was advocating her our uncle to be taken away from our mom and I kind of agreed but my moms side of the family freaked out and so did my mom, because without his income she could not pay rent and could likely become homeless. My mom asked to live with me and I said no and she said she couldn’t believe I would let her become homeless. Now she still cares for my uncle but her health is declining a lot and I don’t see it possible for much longer. She gets caregivers to help but then gets in a fight with them (like everyone) and fires them over and over.
I have an opportunity to move 3 hours away to live with my boyfriend and I kind of want to take it. I just feel a hatred towards my mom sometimes. She didn’t raise me and barely provided care, abused me, and now expects me to care for her.
She calls me every single day sometimes 6-7 times a day and her calls absolutely infuriate me and I don’t know why. This would also happen when I was a kid, she would call when I was at my dads and someone would yell at me to drop everything and come to the phone because my mom called and I didn’t always want to talk to her. She spends most of her time it seems calling people on the phone, she doesn’t have hobbies or do too much else, she just smokes and calls people.
I feel guilty for not wanting to help my mom and being kinder. My boyfriend visits his grandma and family every Friday and they have dinner. His aunt takes his grandma to all her appointments and cares for her. But my mom has been acting like she is an old lady for like 20 years like she can’t do things on her own.
TLDR: I feel guilty for not caring for my mom more. What do I do? Why am I so heartless?
