2024.05.15 22:09 inaneswine Heartstopper S3: Alice's Q&A on Tumblr (S3, Vol 4+5 spoilers)

So Alice did a mini Q&A on Tumblr today after Netflix dropped the teaser for S3. Tumblr is awful to try and navigate finding the Qs that go with the As, so I've just collected and posted them here. Spoilers ahead for S3, and Vol 4+5 of the comics!
how come you changed it from tank top to vest? lots of americans confused by vest 😅
because I thought about someone actually saying the phrase ‘tank top’ with a British accent and it sounded so weird and awkward in my mind, ‘vest’ was the more realistic word (at least for people from my region of England lol). Sometimes things that are written in the comic would actually sound quite awkward and odd if the cast said them out loud, so I change them!
Was that the full first scene or was it cut for the teaser?
it was cut for the teaser! The full scene is longer (and the billie song was just for the trailer!)
i’m in shock that billie let them debut a new song in it
ME TOO
are there any new photos added on charlie’s wall of him and nick together?
haha there are new photos in both rooms yes!
I’m so in love with the little trailer! My Question is: How did you feel, knowing you are dropping the trailer without anyone expecting something? 😄😍
i wished i could have teased it harder but because it was a collab (of sorts) with billie eilish’s team I didn’t want to do anything that might ruin it or not be what they wanted! 😅
I’m wondering if we’ll get a proper look at the new pictures in Charlie’s room at some point 🙇🏻‍♀️
of COURSE we shall
Not sure if you can answer this, and I could have a guess anyway, but is that trailer the complete moment or is the scene longer than that with more conversations that have been cut to make the trailer?
the scene is longer in the show, it had to be cut very short for the trailer!
was having tori's hair short from the get-go just for the sake of continuity or was there a.... deeper choice there..... i luv all the solitaire references in volume 4 sm so i'll take what i can get in the show hehe
so the thing about in-story haircuts in TV - they are a production nightmare. The show is filmed completely non-chronologically, so if Tori had long hair at the start, that would be a huge amount of extra work for the haimakeup department. It takes at least an hour to get an actor in or out of a wig. It just makes things very difficult and we always have an extremely hectic and tight schedule so we decided it’d be easier for her to just have short hair from the start!
I’m honestly so excited about s3. When you said that the ferris wheel scene was modified does that mean that the talk that Tori has with Charlie about her being asexual will that not be in s3?
yes that’s correct, I’m saving that story for S4 where I can build up to it much more effectively 🙏 you’ll see when you watch s3 that there just wasn’t the room to give that storyline the space it needs!
it was so amazing alice 😭 we cannot wait for more, we are all so beyond excited !!
one question : is there more to the opening scene, like will it have more dialogue between Tori & Charlie similar to the comics ? i assumed the opening scene was just cut that way to fit the 45 seconds teaser format and Billie Eilish's new song clip (HUGE congrats on tha btw oh my god ?? we were all so surprised and elated)
yayyyy I’m glad you enjoyed!! Yes that’s correct, the full scene is longer!
Have you considered filming season 2 and 3 one after another??
I could not have written the scripts in time, I barely managed to write the S2 scripts in time 😅
Of course we were all very excited!! Did this season feel different to make with the subject matter a bit darker and more mature? Can’t wait to see it!!!
yes definitely! Lots of new experiences and vibes on set. But I guess it’s an intense experience no matter what!
I know you already answered about the swearing but there's a debate on twitter rn so: will they say 'fuck', specifically?
yes 😂
ALICE IT WAS MAGICAL!! I CANNOT WAIT FOR PROMO TO START!!!
YAY same!!!!!
Not specifically about the trailer, but when you started writing season three did you already know by that point Olivia would not be available or did you have to do re-writes to take Sarah out of the story?
I knew it was a possibility but it wasn’t confirmed until very close to the shoot. I had to do some quite intense last minute rewrites 😅 but I’d already thought about what I’d do in that scenario so I was somewhat prepared!
The trailer was so lovely, it made my whole week! I love the brother-sister moments with Tori and Charlie; Joe and Jenny are so great together on screen. Will we get to see Tori and Nick interact more in this season?
a little yes! 💖
will there be a s3 music playlist on spotify?? or will the s3 music get added to the current playlist?? that would be amazing!!!💕🍂
I’m sure someone will make an s3 playlist!! Netflix control the Heartstopper Spotify playlists so it’ll be up to them!
do you feel like this season uses social media (inside the narrative) more or less than season 2? i love how important it was to the story for s2 and the way it was shown on screen - was there more or less present in s3?
difficult to say… there’s a fair bit of it for sure but maybe not as much as S2? Not sure tho!
why did you decide to change the line from tank top in the comics to vest ? did it just make more sense regionally that he would say vest ? (genuinely curious!)
indeed, ‘tank top’ just didn’t sound like something a British teen boy would say! Sometimes the things I write in the comic sound awkward when they’re spoken out loud by a real person 😂
Joe and Kit’s ability to make heart eyes is truly unparalleled. They deserve all the awards.
Could not be more excited for season 3!!!
One question that I’m sure you’ve answered but I’m not sure where - do you do the animations for the show? The “I love you” in the promo looked like a new style and I liked it a lot! Just curious. Thanks for everything 🥰
the animations are done by an animator named Anna Peronetto! She is brilliant!!
can you tell us anything about the artists that will be part of this season's soundtrack?
I’d say there are some heartstopper classics but also a bunch of new artists! Sorry to be vague, I don’t want to spoil 🥺
This is random and about season 1, but can you settle a debate about what exactly the snow was made of in the snow day scene? 🙃❄️
pretty sure it was a mix of foam and powder depending on what it was used for 🤔
Will the rating be higher? It is 12 usually but with season 3 being described with mature themes will it become a 15? Can't bwlieve we are in the season 3 era already!
I believe it depends on country and it’s not up to me, but the rating is likely to increase yes, mostly due to slightly more swearing, sex scenes, and mental health themes. I think it really edges the border between a 12 and a 15 in the UK so I’m really not sure how it’ll be rated!
Also, do you have a favorite episode yet? 👀
I love every episode of s3 truly, but I think ep 4 is something special and maybe the best heartstopper ep I’ve written across all three seasons!! Very proud of it 💖
seriously cannot describe how excited I am for s3 - when filming and editing scenes with michael and tori is it really strange to see them on screen when they were really the first two main characters you wrote about?? what was that like seeing them actually come to life? (also i am the self proclaimed most excited for michael to appear, cannot wait to see how darragh portrays him as he seems amazing!!)
so so strange!!! But wonderful! They’re my firstborns and it’s strange to see them here while also not really seeing the full story that we know they have. Darragh and Jenny are amazing and I can’t wait for you to see them together on screen 🥹 the first moment you see them together is SO special, it almost makes me cry every time
I know Jonathan bailey has said he reached out through a mutual friend about joining heartstopper. If you are able to answer, what came first; Jonathan bailey or jack/Henry Maddox? (Aka, was that character and scene always going to be included in the series? - i love that mini comic so much!)
Henry Maddox has been around for a couple of years now!! When Jonathan told us he wanted to be involved, me and Wren (who created Henry Maddox!) thought this would be the perfect role for him and a great opportunity for a more comedic sequence in the show (while also tying him into some of the themes of that specific ep… but now I’m getting too spoilery) ! (And obvs we had to change the name due to Henry the pug)
I'm curious about the scenes with Geoff. In the comics they're mostly mentioned instead of shown in detail. Will we get to see bits of Charlie's therapy sessions, or will they be shown in a sort of montage?
we will see some!
with the teaser clip saying coming October 3th does that mean the season won’t be spilt in two parts? 🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼
as far as I know, it won’t!
what was the confusing situation with ur insta stories from a few days ago 😭
So I thought the image was a deliberate tease from Netflix - turns out it was actually a mistake so I deleted my stories. Then they emailed to say I could leave up my stories if I wanted to, but I’d already deleted them 😅
Hey Alice, not a question but just wanted to apologise again for what I said about the spoilers the other week. I didn't think about the costumes and sets. I have felt bad about being so silly ever since! I was just hoping to try and help you feel a even a tiny bit better 💜 super super excited for S3! Heartstopper is one of my special interests and brings me a huge deal of comfort on tough days 🥰 it's a beautiful world you have created 🥹
omg please don’t feel bad, I wasn’t at all annoyed or mad at you!! You have nothing to worry about and you definitely did all make me feel a bit better after that happened 💖 Thank you for loving and supporting Heartstopper, it really means so much!! 💖💖💖

2024.05.15 16:08 ScarletWiddaContent Underrated Danganronpa Lets Play (Youtube)

Hey, I just wanted to share an enjoyable but highly underrated lets play series of Danganronpa. The channel is Disillusioned Plays. I just discovered them this week.
What makes them enjoyable for me: - Group lets play - High effort voice acting, vibes super close to the original - Not afraid to make fun of the game - Added comedic dialogues that makes sense to the character
Reasons you might not like: - Sometimes they really lean into pointing out the annoying stuff on the game but in a funny way (like the react feature, dialogues that often just repeat the last dialogue, overused flashbacks)

2024.05.14 02:51 socksta Documentary Recommendations for reference - Comedic Recreations with Dialogue

I was hoping somebody could recommend me some documentaries that have used more elaborate recreations with actors and dialogue possibly done more slap stick or sketch comedy style. I know there are plenty of documentaries on comedians or sketch comedy but what I'm looking for specifically is comedy created for the documentary itself inspired by the talking heads from the sit down interviews. Something like Drunk History or Chapelle Show's Rick James and Prince stories might be the closest to what I'm thinking but would prefer to see something more digestible over a feature length. The documentary The Saints of Second Chances (2023) used actor Charlie Day for the recreations in a goofy fun way that is probably the most similar to what I am looking for but even those didn't have any dialogue in the recreations. Pepsi, Where is my Jet?(2022) was a very fun documentary where they were able to create humor with creative montages and creative editing so even recommendations like that are still helpful. Thanks in advance!

2024.05.13 22:11 garouforyou People don't seriously believe the WC is "just a draft", surely??

Once again, I have come across the "WC is just a rough draft and manga is the amazing finished product" take and I'm about to tear my hair out?
People just say this for rage bait, right? Because I just don't see how anyone who stops to think for longer than two seconds can actually believe this.
Firstly, ONE himself has stated in an interview that he knew right from the start, from when he first started OPM, when Murata hadn't even heard of the damn thing, that he knew how it was going to end. He already knew how the story would unfold. Most likely not in detail but the main gist of it.
There is no way he would have been considering the WC as a rough draft for years because there was no way for him to know that a famous mangaka would pick it up and turn it into a manga. Saying WC is a rough draft supposés that ONE and Murata were working together from the start.
Secondly, just because a new version of something exists doesn't make the original a draft ffs. That would be like saying every published novel that has had a film adaptation was a rough draft which is daft.
Thirdly, it is extremely disrespectful to ONE as an artist/creator. For all we know the man is spending weeks meticulously planning storyboards, writing and rewriting dialogue, making spreadsheets and mind maps of the plot etc. He may be making draft after redraft of his chapters before he publishes them only for some trolls to come along and shit on his effort and work with "ahaha that's only a rough draft"
Fourthly, brings me to my last point which is I'm pretty sure these people, if they do really believe this ridiculous idea, think that because they still don't understand that the art style doesn't determine the quality of a story and they just can't seem to look at ONE's art and believe that that really is it. Which is sad because ONE, while not a traditionally great artist, is a master of setting a tone and creating tension as well as comedic timing with his art.
For the love of all that is good and holy, for the love of Garou's abs, stop with this "the WC is just a rough draft" bullshit when it's clearly not.

2024.05.12 13:24 Captainatom931 The Dawn of Post-Modern Doctor Who

The double (or de facto triple if you're outside the UK!) premiere of Season 1 is already a bold new way to launch a series of doctor who. It's a streaming first show now, and mechanical elements like the way it's released were inevitably going to change with that. But watching the episodes themselves, I suddenly realised that all of that stuff is a drop in the ocean compared to the sweeping stylistic changes that the show has very rapidly undergone. So if you'll permit my pretentiousness, I think we've entered the age of postmodern Doctor Who; and things will never be the same again.
Sidenote: I'm not really going to make any comments on the quality of the storytelling/plot/dialogue of episodes or how much myself or anyone else might or might not have enjoyed them - I don't think it's really relevant to a discussion of style like this.
Space Babies and The Devil's Chord have reasonably standard doctor who premises when you look at them in a single line - "Doctor Who and Companion go to a Space Station run by intelligent babies" and "Doctor Who meets the Beatles and faces off against an enemy who wants to destroy music" could easily fit into any series of the show from the last 61 years. However, the way they're presented is so wildly different to how they would've been done in the past. Postmodernism is defined by a move away from literalism, from purely depictive or functional art, and an indulgence in superfluous flair and visual/narrative panache.
Space Babies is the least avant-garde of the two episodes, but it has a vibrancy to its design, to its direction, to its characters that I don't think I'd ever seen in doctor who until now. Everything has been dialled up to eleven - even the TARDIS lands dramatically! Twice! Compare the austerity of the design of space stations/spaceships in The End of the World, 42, Into The Dalek, and The Tsurunga Conundrum to the boldness of design in this episode. The script contains stylistic departures from what we're used to too - speeches/monologues are kept short, and replaced by dialogues, even in key moments of exposition. There's an indulgence in using backstory to set up emotional points, and the emotions are far more outward and sincere than they were for previous doctors - especially after such a short time into their run. Nothing is kept restrained - this is Total Who, for everything from visual design to how the tardis lands to the comedic elements. And when the big season arc teaser descends, it's not downplayed like in past "first episodes". No more random bits of graffiti. Instead, it's shouted loud and clear, with an immediate emotional reaction from Ruby. Space Babies takes a very standard setup and premise that's been done half dozen times in doctor who before, and takes it in a vibrant new direction. But this is only the beginning.
The Devil's Chord could have been one of the most boring episodes of Doctor Who ever. Doctor Who meets the Beatles and learns that without their music the universe is destroyed, Another tedious bit of celebrity historical hagiography. What we get is so incredibly far from that - a bold, innovative, avant-garde, exciting story about music, humanity, and damn good fashion sense. The fourth wall is shattered in the first few minutes and remains demolished for the rest of the episode. What would've once been played as a cute little meta joke about theme music is a major plot point emphasising the power of the Maestro. Maetsro is a tremendously bold choice for a villain - and is written like no other in Doctor Who before. The show's had its fair share of cosmic entities, but Maestro takes it to another level. The direction of The Devil's Chord is like nothing else ever seen before in Doctor Who - sharp, indulgent, emotional, and extremely high quality. We've had some fantastically well-directed episodes of DW before but none of them have such a strong sense of style as this. The substance isn't lost either, but I feel that where those two elements would've once been separate they're now inextricably linked. Style and Substance are the same thing in this new post-modern Doctor Who.
What impresses me about this bold direction for the show is how...unexpected it is in today's TV landscape. Comparable sci-fi dramas on streaming and TV at the moment all follow the same kind of very literal, depictive, direct way of storytelling - not that that's inherently bad, but it's become something of a standard style. NuWho has until now been quite reactive to the rest of the media landscape, but this is proactive. There's no attempt to downplay the wackiness that doctor who can uniquely represent, instead it's promoted. For the first time in a very long time, there's nothing else on TV like it. Stylistically, The Devil's Chord seems to have more in common with Poor Things than it has with the last 20 years of Doctor Who. It's an astonishingly unexpected direction for the show to take and I'm just glad there's actually an attempt to take some real risks with it, after the last few series of very paint-by-numbers Doctor Who (looking at you Revolution of the Daleks).
Unfortunately, I don't think it'll be for everyone - more so among the fandom than the general audience. That's the nature of such a radical change in style like this. I don't think there's anything wrong with not liking something because of its style either; not everything is everyone's cup of tea. If you've got on board with doctor who because of the way things have been done for the last 10 years especially, and this is definitively Not That, I can hardly blame you for not being so keen on it. There's not really an easy answer to people feeling the show has left them behind a bit. I imagine some people who'd fallen in love with doctor who because of how it was in the 80s weren't desperately keen on Rose given it was the complete opposite in so many ways. But I have to applaud them for at least trying to change the show, actually going out there and doing something new for not just sticking with what they already know.
So that's my pretentious ramblings. I'm not really sure of what opinion to have on whether it's the right choice or not, but thank god a choice has been made and the show isn't stuck in "not quite a prestige drama" limbo any more. One thing is for certain - Doctor Who has changed forever, just like it did in 2005. There is no going back from an episode like The Devil's Chord just like how there was no going back from Rose. And the best news is that there's going to be a whole new audience worldwide watching doctor who for the first time. And in my book, more people being able to watch and enjoy doctor who is always good.

2024.05.12 12:25 ThickWeatherBee It's the doctor's attitude that is different not the stories!

It's a doctor's attitude that is different, not the way RTD tells his stories.
Before I start I just want to say that I am open to everyone's opinions that disagree with me! In fact I would love to engage in conversation about whether or not Doctor Who is too silly. With that said...
Y'all are coping harder than a politician on Election Day!
The amount of times I've read a comment that said: "Maybe the reason I can't get into this new era is because it's just to Whimsical and lacks the darkness of the original RTD era!" (Which I must say again is a valid opinion even though I completely disagree with it!) Maybe you should actually watch your original RTD era again because Rose, the episode not the character, is a fucking cartoon!
-The doctor walks around by a bunch of sticks of dynamite taped together!
-Rose is doing her best Tarzan impression in the climax!
-EVERYTHING plastic Mickey does!
-The entire scene with the trash can is literally functioning on cartoon logic!
Now you could say that space babies is sillier than Rose but I feel like it makes up for that with good emotional Beats (I wouldn't say rose is very emotionally driven story.) A scarier a monster and generally higher Stakes!
Now obviously it's not 100% silly all the time, there's a lot of mystery and suspense to counteract all the goofy stuff!
JUST LIKE IN RTD2!!!
The church on Ruby Road is an episode about singing goblins and Davina McCall for some reason... but it's also about child murder and how the relatives cope with that. Yes Carla never knew Ruby in the alternate timeline but we see that she's subconsciously still Mourns her daughter. RTD was clearly aiming for that kind of metaphor.
And I don't think the end of the world, the unquiet Dead and the Sletheen two-parter are really that dark either! I really think Dalek was the first episode that didn't feel like a comedy first!
Compare this to RTD2 which gave us a horror episode with comedic elements (wild blue yonder) right at the beginning! I think the only Story from series one that compares to wild blue yonder in terms of what it's trying to be, is the empty child two-parter AKA episode 9 and 10!
(And by the way, somebody told me I couldn't compare with blue yonder to the empty child because while you and I had a lot of comedy in it good thing the empty Trail is totally free of Comedy!🙄)
Okay so what changed?
-Well the stories are a lot grander due to the bigger budget.
-The visual effects have been improved a lot so they could do more with that!
-And the whole thing is going into a more magical fantasy Direction, which series one wasn't.
But you've read the title, the 15th doctor (and the 14th doctor too even though to a lesser extent) is a silly little guy! He's going from place to place blabbering about his backstory and generally spreading a happy Vibe wherever he's going! Whereas number nine is trying to be dark and mysterious and doesn't fully trust Rose and he has a lot of shit to deal with!
Ecclestons dialogue is a lot more grumpy and serious and while he obviously has tons of jokes to tell, we remember his outbursts the most! Now obviously space babies wouldn't be a super dark edgy story if you just dropped the 9th doctor in it but his approach to dealing with the kids would be less cheerful.
Honestly I should make an entirely separate post about the similarities and differences between 9 and 15! Thanks for reading!
TL DR: 15 (and also 14 to a lesser extent) is chill, 9 isn't, so the new stories seem happier!

2024.05.12 10:03 Dracu98 watching the show after being sceptical because of the pilot

yo, a while ago I rewatched the pilot of hazbin hotel from youtube, and I once again asked myself whether or not to watch the show. the pilot didn't convince me for reasons you can read up on in my previous post: https://www.reddit.com/HazbinHotel/comments/1ckvxlm/does_the_show_calm_down_after_the_pilot/
so, now I did just watch episode 1 for the first time and HOLY FUCKING HELL is this show fun! the writing regarding worldbuilding is so efficient at places that lots of time can be placed on character interactions. which are fun as hell! the dialogue is so sharp with hilarious comedic timing, the humor feels less vulgar (unless is angel is talking, which is cool because it comes across as a coping-mechanism), just, overall in general this was amazing! it's everything I liked from the pilot minus literally *everything* that bothered me
gon' watch episode 2 now

2024.05.11 07:25 TheLastIvaldiSon Star Wars Episode II is a "tosco" movie.

In a conversation I was having with a friend here in Brazil, I used the word 'tosco' to define Star Wars II. "Tosco" has a meaning in Portuguese that, by itself, synthesizes much of the sentiment that, I believe, the community has with this movie. In the translator, "tosco" would be the same as "rough" in English. Consider, I am not a native speaker of the English language, and I may miss some cultural nuances that the word may have.
Having or not being sure of this, I will try to define "Tosco" here, in the sentimental sense of the word, to make a bridge with the feeling I had the last time I saw Star Wars II (yesterday).
"Tosco" is defined in the Portuguese dictionary as something done clumsily, done without refinement, without care. It can be related to "grosseiro" (which for me would be the closest translation to "rough"/"rude" in an English-Portuguese sense), however, the way the word is usually used seems to abandon the "rude" sense.
Explanation: the "grosseiro" seems to be much more linked to disrespect, in an affronting way. Han Solo, for example, practices some "rudeness," lack of manners, lack of education. However, Han Solo could not be defined as 'tosco,' because many characteristics put him in a different sense. The style, the elegance, the mannerisms, the maturity...
Got it?
Anyway, it seems that 'Tosco' denotes something much closer to 'something out of...', not usual, not in the fashionista or eccentric sense, but something almost dull, almost worthy of pity.
Episode two brings me that vibe.
The romance arc between Anakin and Padmé is one of the most 'tosco' things I've ever seen. It's so bad that if you look stoned or drunk, the whole thing becomes kind of comedic, in the sense of 'it can't be possible that these guys managed to go through all this dialogue without laughing.'
What is that declaration of love from Anakin to Padmé?
Come on. The 'sand' monologue:
'I don't like sand. It's coarse and rough and irritating, and it gets everywhere. Not like here. Here everything's soft... and smooth...'
Then the whole thing becomes a kind of pickup line where Anakin starts touching Padmé's skin (all super badly acted, also because the script is crap) and the direction is desperately trying to scream 'THIS IS SEXUAL TENSION.'
But the worst of all, that I found myself spontaneously looking at the scene while hiding behind a pillow, such was the nastiness of the love declaration made by Anakin.
'From the moment I met you, all those years ago, a day hasn't gone by when I haven't thought of you. And now that I'm close to you again, I'm in agony. The closer I get to you, the worse it gets. The thought of not being with you makes my stomach turn over - my mouth goes dry. I feel dizzy. I can't breathe. I'm haunted by the kiss you should never have given me. My heart is beating, hoping that kiss will not become a scar. You are in my very soul, tormenting me. What can I do? I will do anything you ask...'
Guys, like, 'I'm haunted by the kiss you should never have given me. My heart is beating, hoping that kiss will not become a scar.' It's a very 'tosca' phrase.
My feeling of discomfort while watching this scene was physical, there's no way, such was the lack of talent and chemistry of the actors.
It's like this whole part of the movie was done with a vibe of a mediocre college audiovisual student trying to make cinema within a millionaire production. It's kind of "tosco".
The end of the movie is cool.

2024.05.11 03:22 beaniebaby729 ‘People Person’ Book Review

You can find something relatable in each of the Pennington siblings. That is about the extent it went for me. They were pretty two-dimensional. They had these traits — too nice, rude, or sensitive. Yes, it does make sense for them to have a bad trait, but there was just not enough building into these characters. A lot of times with Dimple, her actions did not add up with who she was as a person. The characters are aware of who they are as people, but it was not an enjoyable reading experience with them.
The atmosphere of South London was a new experience for me, with a few public locations that I have become aware of from other books. I did enjoy exploring this new area and seeing how the atmosphere impacted the upbringing of our characters, the Penningtons.
I really struggled with the writing when I first sat down to read the ebook. I added in the audiobook to read along with at 13%. The writing just did not grip me, and it was taking me a long time to get through without the help of a narrator. My one positive about the writing, though, is that the dialogue was quite comedic in a dark sense of humor way.
The plot did not go how I expected at all. Yes, I knew the characters would somehow have to get together to build their relationships, but the author took it in a whole different route than one usually would. It was funny. Again, I don't know why I was not fully gripped or intrigued. The plot could have been better if the characters were better.

2024.05.11 00:33 a5tr00 First Black List evaluation came back at a 6!

I was completing my last final of undergrad when my eval came in. I know it's in the median range and not anything exceptional, but for my second ever pilot, I'm pretty happy with the rating! Pretty proud of the 8 on dialogue as well. As an aspiring comedy writer, I'm so glad my jokes hit well.
I'm excited for all the actionable feedback I got and hope I can improve it in later drafts. I knew my cold open was weak but I love it so much I'm having a hard time knowing I need to rewrite it, ahah. Here's a bit of my eval if anyone wants to take a read :)
Title: Coming-Of-Aged
Era: Present day
Genre: Comedy
Overall: 6 / Premise: 6 / Plot: 6 / Character: 7 / Dialogue: 8 / Setting: 6
Logline: After a 40-year-old former prom queen ends her marriage and comes out as lesbian, she must navigate her newfound sexuality while dealing with the inconveniences of moving back in with her parents.
Strengths: Coming-Of-Aged creates a splendid backdrop for a broad situational comedy. It expertly balances Jennifer’s late-life journey of self discovery with moments of raunchy humor. Furthermore, its well-executed, low-concept premise opens the door to explore universal themes such as sexual identity, reinventing oneself in middle age, and small town suburban living. Coming-Of-Aged’s greatest strength is the author’s unique comedic voice. For example, Alexis describing Tinder as, “a video game that ends in an orgasm,” is a laugh-out-loud joke. Erin’s line of, “you’re one of the sanest lesbians in Ohio,” is another such moment. This sample’s humor is utilized skillfully and consistently throughout the script to deploy hilarious jokes, and to write quippy, realistic dialogue. This sharp, clever dialogue creates a naturalistic tone, and clearly communicates emotional subtext without feeling stiff or forced. The script’s perspective is clearly deeply personal, which imbues it with a distinct air of authenticity. The writer has a definite understanding of comedic timing, and how to craft farcical situations, such as Erin dangling half-naked out of Jennifer’s window.
Weaknesses: Coming-Of-Aged’s cold open doesn’t do sufficient work to establish the show’s premise. It introduces Jennifer successfully as a character, but it’s not even made explicitly clear that she has moved back in with her parents. It’s worth considering what it would look like to focus on establishing the grocery store workplace as the center of the script, as the sample lacks a situational anchor in its current state. This would give the series a stronger foundation to build future episodes around, and create a world ripe with comedic premises and dynamic character building. This would likely involve shifting some of the scenes away from Jennifer’s parents' house and setting some more scenes at the grocery store, as well as introducing a few more workplace characters and expanding upon Jennifer’s relationship with Alexis. Furthermore, Kate’s response on Tinder to Jennifer doesn’t feel proportionally appropriate for Jennifer asking to push their date 30 minutes. Lastly, Jennifer is too passive in the development of her reconnecting with Erin because her car breaks down. It would be a stronger decision for Jennifer to find out that Erin is Josh’s mechanic, and then to take a more active role in maneuvering their meeting.
Prospects: Coming-Of-Aged’s relatable premise and likable cast of characters would certainly appeal to a wide audience, especially since it’s set in a small town in the Midwest. There is absolutely a market for this kind of broad, accessible comedy right now, as the current industry contraction has seen a shift away from high-concept and stunt scripts. This story would work well on a streamer like Max, which has already demonstrated interest in similar settings with shows like Somebody Somewhere. However, Coming-Of-Aged could also thrive exceptionally well on a more traditional linear network like ABC, NBC, or CBS, and would be a great sample for a writers’ room for a comedy like the Frasier reboot on Paramount+ because of its deft use of farce.

My regrevator oc, Weathery lore, check other post here for art.
SPECIES
Weathery is part of the Weatherling species, a species of creatures from a different planet, much like Mach. They are all based on the different kinds of weather, retaining the ability to switch their appearance based on the weather they inherit (for example, Weathery inherited sunny, foggy, and rainy weather, derived from their mother). Weathery isn't fully Weatherling, however, as they are also a Starling, another species of beings who look like stars, their father specifically being a sun Starling. This explains why their temperature and powers in their sunny form vary from regular Weatherlings, as they have enhanced heating abilities compared to the mild temperature their peers produce.
These two species are very closely tied together, as they both have evolutionary ties from one singular species. What characterizes them all is their singular eye, which is present in every single creature part of either species. Another less common species sharing ties with Weatherlings and Starlings are Flowerlings and Planetlings. (Flower beings and Planet based beings).
These creatures are all genderless and create children artificially by taking pieces of each other and merging them together, much like how Weathery was created. They lived in a distant planet, which information had been forgotten or simply kept a secret ever since the Regretevator formed.
BACKSTORY
Weathery grew up as an orphan after their parents mysteriously vanished alongside their aunt and her husband. The four of them were all scientists, and Weathery believed that they must have passed away due to an experiment, whether that's the truth or not, which will not be revealed yet. They were left alone with their younger cousin, a Flowerling named R.T. Blossom and their home were lost due to the disappearance of their parents, which left them to live on the streets.
In order to survive, Weathery began performing on the streets as a stand-up comedian in order to gather coins and afford food for themselves and their cousin. Weathery had a talent for comedy and entertainment, but they struggled with their confidence and never had great success. Regardless of their problems, they were able to survive with their cousin all throughout their late teenage years.
Upon adulthood, when the Regretevator formed, Weathery and their cousin were caught up in a space distortion like Pilby, and they were dragged in its dimension. Sensing this opportunity, Weathery decided to use the elevator every day in order to continue their career and hopefully have more luck while also visiting different floors for that purpose.
They almost gave up on their dreams and the possibility of survival with how little they gained until someone, for the first time, genuinely laughed and watched them with interest. That person was Pilby, who, despite their own insecurities and anxiety related to their job as a clown, was able to encourage Weathery to gain courage with some struggling advice. Pilby gave them a little batch of money, which was the symbol of the start of their bond.
Ever since then, Weathery worked on their self-esteem and confidence, now truly showing off all their talent. They continued visiting the elevator in order to meet Pilby and communicate with them, which started a strong friendship between the two and made Mach aware of Weathery's presence. After a long time, Weathery founded their own TV program "Rise and Sunshine" with the help of sponsors who wanted them to become the next big thing. The show was originally a weather forecast show with comedic elements to it, but it soon turned into a variety show with varying content and it exploded in massive success. Granting Weathery fame and coins.
Their newfound fame allowed Weathery to assist Pilby in trying to find circuses that would let them audition for a role, but despite how much effort Weathery put in researching places and helping Pilby with their confidence, Pilby is not ready yet to work as a clown again. It's exactly after one of their failed auditions that they both shared an affectionate moment together, where Weathery comforted them and reassured them that they would always be by their side. Soon enough, the two fell in love and began dating, while Weathery's show continued growing both in popularity and budget.
But between this time, Mach and Weathery formed a communication, since Mach found out through Pilby that Weathery also came from a space distortion like them. This led to the two finding a common goal, as Weathery had knowledge regarding the distortion and a theory regarding the red eyed creature, which is often mentioned in dialogue between NPCs, making a connection between the two and possibly between MR too.
Weathery begins working alongside Mach in order to research the red eyed creature nightmares while bringing awareness of the danger on their show and promoting Bive's theories and inventions. This led to Weathery becoming a target of the nightmares, which made them believe that the "parasite" behind it was well aware of whatever they were doing and how much they knew. Mach was concerned for their well-being and ordered them to not speak of said topics on TV again until they found a solution to get rid of the problem.
Weathery also experienced nightmares involving Pilby, fearing that they may be taken away by the creature or disappear into nothing like their parents did. But as of the present day, they attempt to remain positive and continue being by the side of their beloved.
They still are relentlessly searching for the reason of their parent's disappearance, theorizing that it must also be connected to the disappearance of Catarina, Pilby's mother. Weathery is awaiting for the next move of the red eyed creature while keeping a close eye on MR and monitoring its every move so that they can protect the people of the elevator.
PERSONALITY
Weathery is charming, funny, and kind. They treat all the other elevator passengers rather kindly, even Unpleasant. (Although they struggle to be around them and are driven away by their unpleasantness). They joke around with those who like joke and offer good advice to those who struggle.
They are extremely selfless and try to hire anyone to work in their TV program if they are in dire need of money. They don't like people who bully or harass others, which is why they struggled to even treat Gnarpy kindly before they found out what xe did to Spud.
Weathery is also a glutton for sweet food and molten rocks, which they are capable of consuming due to their species' diet. They absolutely enjoy all that is rainbow, and that reminds them of their home and people.
They are loving towards Pilby, giving them many gifts and always trying to keep their mood up and positive. They get along with mostly everyone and have invited at least the great majority of all the NPCs to make an appearance in their show.
They don't particularly like Pest due to him having stolen coins from them when they were still poor and struggling, but primarily because of his treatment towards Pilby. This leads to them being passive-aggressive towards him and calling him out for his refusal to change as a person and stop doing crimes.
Weathery is very protective of the people they love, so if a player ever tried to throw snowballs at Pilby or do anything negative towards them, Weathery would kill the guilty player with a heat wave. They don't have the same reaction if the attacks are directed at themselves.
FUN FACTS
  • Weathery suffers from insomnia due to the nightmares they experienced. Which makes them need to take melatonin in order to sleep properly.
  • They change appearance based on their mood. If a player sprays them, they'll resemble a rain cloud and if they're hit with a tomato or snowball they'll turn into a foggy form. Both transformations would cause events in the elevator (flooding it in the rain form and making it dark in their foggy form.)
  • Weathery is a good cook and baker, although they are clumsy when cooking and sometimes burn their food.
  • They can control their temperature as they please.
  • They are very heavy, but they can decrease their weight by floating.
  • They own a coat made out of clouds and one eye star shaped sunglasses.
  • Their voice claim would be ENA by Joel. G
  • Their in game voice would be TV chatter and other sounds you'd hear in a show.

2024.05.10 16:25 Ok-Pianist1211 S2E3: "A Bee in Your Bonnet"

Another day, another rewatch! Today we are OFFICIALLY less than one week away from the season three part one premiere and I have certainly said this before but it feels insane that we're finally almost there. I am sure I will be singing a different tune when I've finished the first part and there's a massive cliffhanger or something, but for now I'm just so excited.
"A Bee in Your Bonnet" finds our favorite family heading to Aubrey Hall for a country visit, accompanied by the Sharmas. We get to learn a bit more about Anthony's backstory in this episode, the significance of the bee is revealed for the first time (to non-book reader audiences that is), and we find Benedict struggling to keep calm over the prospect of his admittance to the Royal Academy Schools.
So all, without further ado, I give you "A Bee in Your Bonnet."
Benedict and Colin get a mention during Anthony's conversation with his father (in flashback). Anthony says that Benedict will likely make fun of him for not being able to shoot a deer while hunting. Benedict then "appears" in flashback, though if you watch carefully (in super slow mo) they have for whatever reason decided not to cast a younger version of Benedict, so Luke T is in his early thirties playing a sixteen year old here, though it's only for a brief moment, unnoticeable to the naked eye.
A moment of appreciation here for Jonathan Bailey's acting in the flashback scene: it's honestly fantastic. Some of his best work in the show easily.
Benedict appears in earnest for the first time as Daphne arrives with baby Auggie, poking fun at his sister for using fighting words regarding the pall mall game. We are robbed of Benedict holding a baby, which is maybe a good thing because my ovaries would likely explode. After Eloise makes baby Auggie cry, Benedict approaches her with a teasing grin, leaning over the sofa to likely make fun of her off screen. A lovely example of how Luke T is often acting even when he has no dialogue. He greets the Sharmas with the rest of the family as they arrive, though he is mostly in the background here.
Benedict mentioned: Daphne describes his pall mall mentality as "a solid shot, but he avoids conflict." Interestingly, this seemingly describes the character in the show as well. It's clear that Benedict is always capable, but he does seem to avoid trouble at every turn, especially when it comes to the marriage mart. Perhaps we'll see that change this season?
On the pall mall field, we see his competitive side as Benedict argues that picking in alphabetical order is "the precedent," before teasing Anthony when Kate selects the mallet of death. He lunges for the purple mallet: I know someone has said the colors represent their love interests, but I am unable to recall how purple blends with blue to represent Sophie, if someone can explain that please do! We hear Benedict yell at Eloise to stop cheating at one point during the game.
Colin and Benedict's conversation on the field is of course the most significant and revealing, as after Benedict misses an easy shot, Colin notices that his mind is "clearly elsewhere." Benedict tells Colin he awaits word of his acceptance to the Royal Academy Schools, but it's more so how he explains this to his brother, saying: "It's hardly a grand tour as you've had with your travels, but I do hope to distinguish myself, too." This ultimately reveals that Benedict sees himself as lacking any sense of purpose, with no travels, no wife, and no titles to speak of. It's obvious he doubts he will be accepted, and the stress is clear on his face (and in his game).
Ahh the purple tea scene! As someone who has been slightly corrupted by a younger sibling, this scene feels so true to sibling behavior. Colin's attempt to calm Benedict's mind is very telling. Benedict asking if Colin is good is so funny. Colin's explanation however of how the tea works seems to be maybe a bit too enticing to Ben, who just pretty much says fuck it, and pours the entire bag of "tea" into his cup, knocking it back in a few gulps. The physical acting in this scene is just great. I feel like the brotherly relationship between these two has been overlooked, but they are clearly closer than Anthony is to Benedict. Which makes sense when you consider Anthony's position, Benedict likely feels like it's easier to have fun with Colin. It seems pretty likely at this point that season three will dive deeper into their sibling bond, and I feel that Colin marrying before Benedict will likely be a bit of catalyst for the second born Bridgerton.
I wish I had words for the Benedict at dinner scene. If you keep your eye on him throughout the scene, again, his gift for physical acting is just superb. He has excellent comedic timing. If I recall correctly Luke T and Newts discussed this scene on the Bridgerton Podcast, where they shared that production had to tell Luke T to act less high. They both shared the sentiment that acting high can sometimes make you feel a bit high in reality. Also it's worth watching Newts in this scene too because sometimes it seems like he can't keep a straight face. They both shared they had a blast filming this scene, and I mean how could you not? We also get the most giffed clip of Benedict from this scene, and it's just so funny during an otherwise heavy episode.
We find Benedict again, still feeling the effects of the tea he drank a bucket of, working on what is some of the most eclectic art we've seen him do yet! There's some deliberation over what it is exactly he's painting (some say they see a mask). Benedict hugging Colin aggressively and kissing his face as he declares the Royal Academy School's don't matter as long as the world loves his art. Of course, he changes his tune after this when Eloise comes in with the letter confirming his acceptance, opening the window and declaring his success for all of Kent to hear, before collapsing onto the window seat. Honestly, this scene is a little bittersweet knowing now that it was Anthony who secured his spot. But when he pouts up at the sky and declares, "I am honored to accept your acceptance," maybe it's all worth it? The storyline of Benedict being high off his ass when he finds out about his acceptance is really just a stroke of genius, so thank you Sarah L. Thompson for writing this episode! It's one of my favorites.
This is the last appearance of Benedict in this episode, which does primarily use Benedict as comic relief, at least for the second half. However, we do learn that he has applied at the Royal Academy Schools, and we ultimately learn he was accepted! Which will start Benedict on a bit of a different path for the remainder of the season, maybe bringing him a bit full circle to what we saw from him in season one. He wants to explore his art, but he isn't sure how to do it without stepping outside the bounds of society, which I personally think he enjoys reaping the comforts of. Maybe he will grow more distasteful of it next season (maybe because of Tilley?), which leads him to purchase My Cottage. The article where Jess Brownell revealed some of her rationale for switching books 3 and 4 was because some of Offer takes place outside of London all but confirms Benedict's season will at least somewhat take place at My Cottage, which is an excellent thing for the series. To keep the longevity, we need to see a bit more of this world than just Rotten Row, Grosvenor's Square, and the Bridgerton house drawing room. One of the most refreshing parts of this episode is that it takes place at Aubrey Hall, which was a new location to us!
That about does it for "A Bee in Your Bonnet." See everyone back here tomorrow for "Victory."
Best Benedict quote from this episode: "You shall all bear witness to my talents!"

2024.05.10 05:21 SwordGuru925 [TOMT][TV SHOW][2000s or after] Funny Scene Where Woman Changes In Front of Group of Guys

Trying to find a tv show that has a comedic theme to it. There is one scene where there was a woman changing into jeans and T-shirt and revealing her lingerie in the process. She changed in front of several guys who were sitting in 2 rows of chairs and were incredibly flustered at the situation.
I don't remember her exact dialogue, but I think she mentioned that she was some sort of teacher and was trying to motivate the guys in the room to follow her lessons, because she learned that the guys thought she was mean. The guys were young and old, but they looked like "blue-collar" white guys. I also think one of the guy's name was Murray as another guy shouted his name at him.

2024.05.09 23:36 Strawberry2828 Why is Konsouba so liked on reddit?

To preface, I don’t hate Konosuba but I think it’s max a 7/10 show. I realize it’s not supposed to be a serious show and is light hearted and comedic slice of life show with wacky characters who go on misadventures together. However, the praise it gets is so weird. This show is literally the same shit repeated over and over again be it plot, gags or even dialogues. How the hell are people exited to watch the same shit over and over again? I peeked in on season 3 and there’s nothing new. literally the same shit as last season. So why the praise?

2024.05.09 21:38 isi_na I just finished the third Sky game, and here is why I love these three games so much

Warning: I am completely hyped about these games now and will sound like a crazy fangirl XD
I just wrapped up the Trails in the Sky 3rd, and I have finally finished the whole Sky ark. I really enjoyed this journey. I personally think turning the third entry into a lengthy epilogue with no new characters (just new recurring characters as playable ones. Edit: I forgot Ries! She is completely new. Sorry, Ries XD) and all set at the same place was such a bold move, but it worked really well. I really liked the depth it gave some of the characters. I enjoyed Kevin's journey, and him as a main character. I loved the lore I learned about Dominions & the Church. Cold Steel spoiler ahead:It also made me understand Gaius position much better!
The Sky games are probably some of my fav JRPGs, and I have zero nostalgia towards these games as I only just played them. I played the CS games and Reverie before, and then decided to go back and see how it all began. And I am so glad I did! I can just recommend it to all of you who are still on the fence if it's worth it to play Sky. Yes, it is.
Here is what I loved about these three games in particular:
I am sure there is more, but this is what I was able to come up with without trying to write an essay XD
That said, it's time for the Crossbell games now! I know very little about Zero and Azure, and can't wait to close this gap now.

2024.05.09 10:57 AlterEgoNiJin Book 8 for 2024 I've Got Your Number by Sophie Kinsella

Book 8 for 2024 I've Got Your Number by Sophie Kinsella
⭐⭐⭐⭐
** Spoilers ahead**
With all that has been happening in my life now in my free time, aside from catching up on some series that I haven't watched, I do catch up on reading. I wanted a very light read. Something that will make me laugh and make me forget all the worries that I have. So I went back to reading books of one of the authors I adore because of her humor and wit when it comes to writing but still is able to deliver life lessons that might prod you into examining yourself and reflect.
Sophie Kinsella, renowned for her witty and charming storytelling, delivers yet another delightful rom-com in "I've Got Your Number." This novel follows the escapades of Poppy Wyatt, a lovable and slightly scatterbrained protagonist who finds herself in a series of comedic mishaps.
The story kicks off with Poppy's engagement ring going missing, setting off a chain of events that leads her to find a discarded phone in a bin. With her innate curiosity and penchant for problem-solving, she decides to keep the phone, only to discover that it belongs to the assistant of a high-powered businessman named Sam Roxton. What ensues is a whirlwind of text messages, miscommunications, and unexpected connections as Poppy and Sam navigate through misunderstandings and burgeoning feelings.
Kinsella excels at creating endearing characters, and Poppy is no exception. Her quirky personality and relatable struggles make her instantly likable, and readers will find themselves rooting for her from the start. Sam Roxton serves as the perfect foil to Poppy's exuberance, with his reserved demeanor and dry wit adding depth to their dynamic.
The novel's premise may seem light-hearted, but Kinsella weaves in themes of self-discovery and personal growth amidst the laughter and romance. As Poppy grapples with her own insecurities and the pressures of societal expectations, she learns valuable lessons about staying true to herself and finding happiness on her own terms.
One of the highlights of "I've Got Your Number" is Kinsella's trademark humor, which infuses every page with wit and charm. The banter between Poppy and Sam is both witty and engaging, keeping readers entertained as they navigate the ups and downs of their relationship.
While the plot may follow a somewhat predictable trajectory for the genre, Kinsella's engaging writing style and knack for crafting lovable characters make this novel a joy to read. Fans of romantic comedies will find "I've Got Your Number" to be a delightful escape, filled with laughter, love, and plenty of heart.
Overall, "I've Got Your Number" is a charming and entertaining read that showcases Sophie Kinsella at her best. With its lovable characters, witty dialogue, and heartwarming message, this novel is sure to leave readers smiling long after they've turned the last page.
Meanwhile, as usual, these are the lines from the book that has resonated to me.
• “I saw a girl who races to help others but doesn’t help herself. And right now you need to help yourself. No one should walk up the aisle feeling inferior or in a different league or trying to be something they’re not.”
• No one knows what love is, exactly. No one can define it. No one can prove it.
• You and I, we’re not destined to be together forever. We’re not the main event. I think we’re …” I screw up my face, trying to think of a way to put it. “I think we’re each other’s footnotes.”
I hope you read a book that inspires you today and makes you smile. One that makes you want to be happy again 🙂 May you (and me as well), like Poppy finally find your main event and thank your footnotes for bringing you to where you are. ❤️

2024.05.08 23:28 bttoddx Was Mel once a more flawed character? [SPOILERS]

The writing for this game isn't really hitting for me as much as the first game did, and I'm wondering if it's stemming from a core decision about the way Supergiant decided to write Mel. I think its pretty notable how much less comedic this game is than the first game, and there's a bunch of things in game that indicate there was a decision made partway through the writing process that made it that much darker.
In the first game, a bunch of the fun came from Zag both being a deeply flawed and very contrasting character from the rest of the cast. Zag was different from the rest of the cast in that he was so much less taken with his own honor and all the artifices and formalities of the house, that he functioned in the context of the story as the funny man in the midst of a bunch of straight men. He was the bugs bunny, the Arlecchino in the story. Whats more, he definitely wasn't without fault, as he was so sanguine that he veered into smugness, and the antagonism that he was subjected to never felt unearned. Both of these parts of his character, coupled with the overall lower stakes I think made it easy for the writers to write a very funny and character-driven game. There was so much conflict, and Zag was so flawed that it made it easier to write compelling dialogue that was working towards individual character goals.
In the new game by contrast, there is suspicious lack of friction between Mel and the rest of the cast. She's just too... earnest, and I think it really detracts from the humor of the game. There's a couple of things in the writing too that make me think it wasn't always supposed to be this way. There's a line from Dora at some point where she criticizes how uptight Mel is, and though it hadn't occurred to me that Mel was particularly uptight, it clued me into where the character was originally supposed to be.
The cast of this game is notably more underpowered than the first game. The main cast is comprised of gods who are mostly tricksters, and their choice of literary hero, Odysseus, is an archtypical trickster hero, in direct contrast with the choice of Achilles from the last game. Even the new gods that they introduced in this game (Hephaestus, Hestia, Hera... maybe not Apollo) are more wily and less foppish(?) than the others on Olympus.
It seems fitting to me that Mel was originally going to be a much more uptight and less self assured character. There are obvious story choices that rhyme with the first game (we descend into Hades) and it would make sense that in this game, Mel would be the straight woman to everyone else being funny. In this idea of the character, she would be way more uptight than the rest of the cast, and is constantly getting tricked and jokingly poked at, because even though she is the princess of the underworld, she is also a teenage girl. The fact that she would be the only member of her family who hadn't been raised in court, but wants to be treated more regally than any of them feels like a satisfying irony to me. Odysseus would be the wise-cracking dad-joke telling dad that we never got in the first game, it would justify Hecate's characterization by making her a better foil for Mel, Nemesis would be a playful rival rather than a surly loser, etc, etc.
I don't know when or why they made they decision to make Mel less flawed, but since everyone is broadly on her side she's kind of turned out to be a bog standard chosen one MC, which I'll admit is a little disappointing. She's not really a mary sue, but I think that's mostly because it's structurally impossible in the context of a rougelike for her to be that way. Her character flaws in this game aren't abundantly clear to me however, and I think that really stands in the way of giving her meaningful character development, and makes the stakes of the game feel really grim. I wonder what everyone else thinks about this though, and if I'm just being too harsh on the writing, which I should stress is by no means bad, it just feels like a bit of a letdown from the first game.

2024.05.08 19:15 AaronYaygar The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014) is still a strange and giddy blast of fun.

I can remember hearing rave reviews for The Grand Budapest on tv back when it first released 10 years ago, but it took me until now to get to it, and I'm beyond pleased to see that it lives up to the hype.
As someone who's only seen one other Wes Anderson film (Moonrise Kingdom) I can't comment on how his style holds up across his entire filmography, but I really think that it works exceptionally well here, adding to the story on display rather than detracting from it. The movie's tone is proudly odd and yet often earnest, and that mix feels perfectly emphasised by Anderson's unique directorial style.
The whole cast is good, but Ralph Fiennes gets the showcase role and makes the absolute most of it here, spitting out the rapid-fire dialogue with really sharp comedic timing, and his performance lines up perfectly with the film's occasionally grim humor.
I went into this one not quite sure what to expect of it, but it left me so thoroughly entertained across its runtime that it really surprised me, and it closed on a note that hit me far deeper emotionally than I would've ever guessed that it would. That's always a cool thing to get from a story...
If you haven't checked it out yet, now might be the time to go for it.

2024.05.07 04:45 stress_song1812 Complete Newbie - Auditioning with Character Voices?

Hello! I do community theater (musical and straight) and recently, I saw a posting for an audio play. I sent in a request for more information and the poster asked for "3 short audio clips of a minute or less with a variety of character voices (1 dramatic, 1 comedic, and 1 verse can be poetry or Shakespeare)". Does this mean to submit three monologues along those genres using my usual voice, or does it mean to make up a new voice and say the same dialogue? No lines were provided for reading, but the show is based on the Baba Yaga stories.

2024.05.07 03:29 Hypestyles New interview with Gedde Watanabe on "Sixteen Candles" and its legacy

Gedde Watanabe Didn't Find 'Sixteen Candles' Role Offensive (Exclusive) (people.com)
It's been 40 years since Sixteen Candles was released in theaters, and while times have certainly changed — and Molly Ringwald recently opened up about parts of the movie that haven't aged well — Gedde Watanabe, who played foreign exchange student Long Duk Dong, says he didn't realize his character was an offensive stereotype.
"Frankly I was like, this is a good job, and I'm going to get paid more doing one week in this movie that I did for all the years I was in the theater," Watanabe, now 68, tells PEOPLE.
"It didn't really occur to me that it was a stereotype, because there wasn't really anything out there for Asian actors at the time. It was just so scarce. So I didn't think it was stereotypical or racist. Isn't that weird?" he continues.
Watanabe notes, however, that he of course knew some lines were problematic.
"I remember the movie using the word 'Chinaman,' and even then I was like, "Oh, that's not great.' But you also have to remember in that period of time, people still had to be educated about parameters, what the alarm bells were when it came to being offensive," he says.
Molly Ringwald Reflects on 'Sixteen Candles' in Wake of #MeToo: 'There Were Parts That Bothered Me'
Four decades later, Watanabe says he's fascinated by the way the character is such a driver of conversation. The actor, who was born and raised in Utah and speaks with an American accent, says he was just acting in a comedic role.
"I wasn't even sure I could even pull it off," he says of putting on Dong's heavy foreign accent. "But I had a friend who sort of sounded like him, and he helped me and let me listen to him and would talk with me, and then I went in and auditioned and got it."
16 Candles was one of a bunch of movies that I didn't get to see in the time of their initial release in the 1980s. I was technically underaged. It also ended up being one of quite a few movies which I have subsequently never seen (outside of excerpts) in all the years since. I finally watched it on Amazon Prime the other day.
Some 40 years later (I was 10 at the time), while I can say that the film is pretty good for the genre, it just doesn't hit me the same way as it might have if I had seen it much earlier. I spent much of the time listening closely to the dialogue and how so many outlandish scenarios were portrayed in a matter-of-fact manner, how many boundaries-are-irrelevant expressions take center stage. (The wise guy younger brother in particular.. wow.. that would not have flown in my household.. or any household I knew, back then, lol.. ) . Anthony Michael Hall, Molly Ringwald and several other characters look like several kids I eventually went to high school with; it's uncanny. (John Cusack in a smaller supporting role? Wild..)
The Geek gets to score with the prom queen.. or did he? I still couldn't exactly tell.. The Nice Girl finally gets to spend time with Dream Guy.. though not without enduring galling mayhem from family, Farmer Ted and the rest. Long's fate being untold is probably for the best; it would not likely have been kind, having wrecked his sponsors' automobile. (Then again, those folks had to have had insurance. So, no worries?)
... And,, finding out that Gedde Watanabe was pushing 30 when he took on this role, and now is pushing 70.. Good lord.. (!!!)
