Extinction Rebellion

2018.10.29 03:29 veneratio5 Extinction Rebellion

This is our darkest hour. Humanity finds itself embroiled in an event unprecedented in its history, one which, unless immediately addressed, will catapult us further into the destruction of all we hold dear: our nations, its peoples, our ecosystems and the future of generations to come. The science is clear: we are in the midst of the sixth mass extinction event on planet Earth and we will face catastrophe if we do not act swiftly and robustly.

2024.05.29 06:43 gothickghost Can someone explain this to me like I’m five? How can I get better?

I’m trying to revamp my resume without spending $$$ on some site to do it for me. I’m currently broke and struggling, so I’m trying to do my best. My resume looks like trash. I have too many different jobs. I feel like that makes me look terrible and my self esteem plummets.
I’m trying to get into an office technician position. I don’t have more than three months experience in an office setting. I have over a decade of experience in retail. I have an associate degree in criminal justice and sociology. I’m currently working on my bachelor’s in criminal justice.
I’ve read job descriptions and imported key terms in my resume, but I still doubt myself and if I’m worthy of a state job.
How can I better myself? Right now, I currently work part-time as a special education teacher’s aide.

2024.05.29 06:40 rdk67 Spring Day 70: Policing and Reflective Authority

At the city council meeting – council chambers, they’re called – I hop up, take the mic when the time comes for public input about the budget. The council likes it more when we speak off the cuff, but I’m horrible about time constraints – I tend to over explain certain points so that when I look up at the clock – it’s a countdown clock, and you get precisely five minutes – I sometimes laugh out loud about the thirty seconds remaining or whatever. Thirty seconds? Isn’t it funny how time rules our lives? – what I want to say to the city council as an aside, then contemplate my conscious experience of time as a kid, a child, when bedtime was like a curse, an adversary, and I would read by flashlight, fall asleep on the facing pages. Summers were how long then? Years? How long ‘til holiday? Decades? Old folks were unimaginable, evidence of time travel.
Good evening, City Council – nice chambers.
If a budget is a moral document, then conversation about the budget is really a discussion about the sort of justice we seek as a community.
This is never truer than with the budget of the police – a vocation that collects evidence of alleged crimes, whether it’s a homicide or a speeding ticket, and which vocation assists the state’s attorney in prosecuting cases by providing a report, physical evidence and sometimes courtroom testimony.
Did you notice how I did not say police are here to protect us? It’s a popular misconception. As a long-time member of community courtwatch, I’ve attended hundreds of criminal court hearings, listened to all the details of crimes and debates about guilt and innocence, and it’s rarely the case that police protect anyone. Mainly they are professionals at collecting evidence.
In the course of their duties, the police also sometimes respond to alleged crimes in progress, in which case they also try to mitigate harm – this is the image of policing we know from movies and tv shows, and while this is helpful in some instances, such as domestic violence cases where no-contact orders are routine, mostly what the police do is compile evidence.
I grew up in a very gun-friendly household – the sort of farm family that has a small arsenal in a bedroom closet and knows how to use it. I was 7-years-old when I first fired a gun, and I was carrying a shotgun through the woods when I was 10. I try neither to be overly respectful nor idly dismissive of those who carry guns for a living.
What I can fairly say about anyone who carries a weapon in service to their vocation is that, as soon as the weapon comes out, any notion of a budget as a moral document vanishes, and the interactions that follow are about following commands, not justice.
Even when guns and tasers and pepper spray are simply present – on display but still holstered – the use-of-force premise significantly robs a situation of its capacity for justice.
Don’t try to talk your way out of a speeding ticket – we’ve all heard this advice. Always say yes sir and no ma’am when dealing with the police – we’ve all said this to young people – to help them stay out of trouble, we say. Staying out of trouble – this is what comes to mind when municipal authority is represented by its use-of-force potential.
When weapons are present during the interaction, concepts of neighborliness and reason will always take a backseat to use-of-force potential. This is why we can never count on policing, as a vocation, to improve community justice or public safety, even if they lived in the communities they patrol, which as we know, most policer officers don’t.
As we discuss the city’s budget, I would like you to imagine funding a community responder model in place of more police – one that has its own department, its own budget, its own pathways to promotion.
A community responder model consists of licensed social workers, trained in trauma-informed nonviolent communication, with an expertise in connecting clients with the resources they need to solve problems and be sustainable – more than just helping people stay out of trouble.
The community responder model uses a different form of authority, which we call reflectivity, which is about sharing information and talking things out. An estimated 73% of the calls for policer service in our city could be handled by community responders. These are calls about noisy neighbors, suspicious persons, mental health crises, overgrown lawns.
As an activist, I know that institution building is not what government bodies like to do – they prefer to do almost anything but build new institutions. In practice, this means funding what’s already there, which are known quantities, even if they are also less effective than alternatives.
So I’m here asking you all to take on the hard task, go the extra step and assume the extra risk – by building a post-policing institution based on the community responder model.
By investing in nonviolent forms of authority, when and where we can, we do more than promote a law-abiding citizenry. We create the basis by which residents are more likely to trust municipal authority, are more willing to engage in nonviolent communication skills themselves, and are readier to think about what it means to make our city a better place to live.
This is the promise of building out a community responder model. More than closing criminal cases or impelling people to do as they’re told, we create the foundation for a new municipal authority premised on nonviolent intervention.
I urge you to ratify a budget that strongly supports a community responder model in place of traditional policing – thank you.
The mayor in response to my address – she has done this on more than one occasion after I’ve spoken – stopped the proceedings to wonder aloud how many members of the public planned to speak. There was a show of hands, then public comment continued. See, they have this rule related to time and the number of speakers, but in reality, it’s like she wants to say: how much more of this will I have to take? When I think it through later, I realize another interpretation is that she’s said to herself – bravo, bravo, this metaphysical weather reporter just said it all, I’ve made up my mind – I need hear no more! I wouldn’t feel comforted by that response either, though the mood of the chambers suggested this was unlikely. A dozen people spoke against extra funding for the police, some from the perspective of having been brutalized by police.
I fantasize about opening a coffee shop themed around tonight’s premise – daily disquisition by the patrons of the coffee shop about no extra funding for police. Day after day, week after week, regulars and total strangers would take the stage in one corner of the room to explain why there should be no extra funding for police. Sure, some people might have particular police officers in mind, certain agencies that bug them more than others, but the orators would be encouraged to speak against use-of-force as a form of authority generally. When we think of heaven, when we have visions of the good life for everyone, the sort of authority you won’t find is use-of-force – by definition, everyone feels welcome to be there, feels heard. True, we may be wise enough not to wish for heaven on earth, but let’s remember – better forms of authority than policing exist.
Afterthought: The mayor questions the figure of 73% in her public thoughts on the matter, and I agree the projections need to be taken apart, made accurate, but I find it just as likely over time that the percentage will be higher than that. A constricted police department – with specialized duties in the community – would be a sign of a new concept of reflective authority. I believe we are at a moment in history where that change can take place at the level of municipal authority, whatever the initial workload looks like.

2024.05.29 05:53 BLashes07 The mysterious death of Stephen Smith. Was it an accidental hit and run or intentional murder. Could the Murdaugh family be involved?

On July 8th 2015 in rural road in Hampton County South Carolina, a truck driver called 911 stating that there is a body lying on the road. When law enforcement showed up to the scene they confirmed that the body is deceased and the identity of the deceased man is 19 year old Stephen Smith. Rumors went around and eventually the rumors went back to Stephen’s family, saying the people who were responsible for Stephen’s death were “The Murdaugh boys”. Investigators wanted to get to the bottom of this rumor as they stated “there is always some truth behind every rumor.
When law enforcement showed up the the scene to find Stephen deceased body on in the middle of the road, they found it odd that their was no car debris, broken headlights, paint scraps, not anything to conclude it was a hit and run. They also stated the way Stephen was lying on the road was like if the scene was staged. When Stephen’s parents were trying to get confirmation that the deceased male was Stephen, Stephen’s father got a mysterious call from Randy Murdaugh saying he will give Stephen’s family his services to help them. Later that day Sandy, Stephen’s mother drove past the scene and seen Alex and Randy Murdaugh on opposites sides of the road. Randy made a statement saying that these claims are false that Stephen’s father contacted him & he only visited the scene after he met Stephen’s father and sister. Days before Stephen died he would tell his family he was worried about his safety but did not provide any details.
Sandy and detectives started questioning if the Murdaugh boys had some sort of involvement in Stephen’s death. Sandy stated a week before Stephen died, he told her that he was going deep sea fishing and did not say with whom, supposedly he was going with Buster Murdaugh and his family, that he and buster were romantically involved with each other, but again that’s only a rumor. A teenager at the time came forward to investigators with another rumor stating that 3 young men were in a truck and saw Stephen walking and stuck something out the window, he reluctantly says it was Buster Murdaugh. No other leads have came to any other conclusions to these rumors and by late 2016 the case went cold. After the death of Maggie and Paul Murdaugh the case came to light again and detectives stated they found new leads. In April of 2023 Stephen’s family gathered donations to hire their own private investigators and pathologists, the pathologist confirmed that Stephen was hit with one single blow to the forehead severely fracturing his skull , this cannot be done with a baseball bat. Sandy’s family still believes that Stephen’s death is a result of a hate crime due to him being part of the lgbtq community, and she is asking the public if they know anything to please come forward to bring justice for Stephen.

2024.05.29 05:43 listen2dotai Robert De Niro Headlines Biden Campaign Event Amid Trump Trial Chaos

The news was brought to you by Listen2.AI Listen version:HERE
Ladies and Gentlemen, we find ourselves amidst a spectacle that’s spun out into a charade much against the true spirit of justice and political dignity. A supposed regular presser by the Biden campaign, executed with Hollywood flair, turned into a denouncement platform against former President Donald Trump. This media frenzy took place right outside the Manhattan courthouse, drawing more attention than the closing arguments of a trial that has been as contentious as it has been polarizing.
Now, let's cut through the chase here. Hollywood actors like Robert De Niro, who have zero experience in political administration, were commandeered to vilify Trump. De Niro, amidst his dramatic narrative, claimed that Trump’s potential return to the Oval Office meant a goodbye to freedoms and elections. Hyperbolic? Absolutely. Such statements not only stoke unnecessary fear but also divert from constructive political discourse.
It's crucial to underline that while the Biden campaign insisted their presence at the courthouse was purely coincidental, it’s hard to dismiss the conspicuous timing and setting as mere happenstance. The trial, which has captured massive media attention, conveniently turned into a stage for political theatrics rather than focusing on facts and lawful proceedings. The Democrats, desperate as they seem, are clutching at straws trying to sway public opinion by staging such dramatic interventions.
From a background standpoint, it’s insightful to note that since the start of this trial, Trump’s lead over Biden has not only persisted but widened, according to national polling averages. This surely ramps up the pressure on the opposition. Democratic strategist Pete Giangreco’s admission that weighing Biden’s term against Trump’s would be a losing battle everyday flags an inherent acknowledgment of Trump’s effective administrative policies and leadership that resonated with many Americans.
Looking ahead, the implications of these developments are significant. If political campaigns continue to rely on court steps rather than policy debates and genuine public engagement, what does this spell for the future of American political integrity? Will the courtroom dramas overshadow the real issues that everyday Americans face?
Conclusively, what we witnessed today isn’t an anomaly but perhaps a glimpse into a campaign strategy that could recurrently surface as we approach more critical junctures in American politics. The use of entertainment figures in political campaigns while entertaining, may not necessarily equate to informed, balanced political discourse.

2024.05.29 05:36 yoitsavaa will i be summoned as witness in my ex’s (the defendant) aggravated assault court case

i (21F) dated this guy (who is the same age as me) when i was 19. we broke up a year and a half ago. while we were dating he beat someone up for making inappropriate comments toward me on a night out (him, i and the guy involved were all intoxicated; i was drunk enough to have a poor memory of the incident; the guy he beat up was HEAVILY intoxicated to the point of incoherence). the guy didn’t fight back, just collapsed. the police showed up and my ex spent the night in jail but was released within hours because the guy had said he didn’t want to press charges. 3 months later (we were still dating atp) my ex got charged with aggravated assault but was released from station the night of. apparently the guy changed his mind and wanted to prosecute. i won’t go into too many details because i want to stay anonymous.
fast forward to now (2 years after the incident, 1.5 years after my ex and i broke up) the situation pops into my head. i do some googling and find out court dates are public info. i find out that an arraignment (plea?) has after all this time been scheduled.
my concern is that i was there throughout the entire event, and thus that i may be given a subpoena to testify as a witness. HOWEVER, my ex and i are no contact. in all honesty, i hate him as a person; however, i would carry a heavy burden if he went to jail because of me and so i honestly don’t want to know what happens and don’t want to testify as a witness. i know that if i receive a subpoena, i legally must go, so my question is: what is the likelihood that i will receive a subpoena to testify as witness? additionally, i presume since this is a criminal charge the crown is the prosecutor; does that mean only they will ultimately decide whether to request me? or will the victim decide? i really don’t think my ex will request me as a witness to his defence, all considering. i know he has a private attorney, as she was hired while we were still together, but she has not been in contact with me since i spoke with her once around a month after the charges were laid, while we were still dating.
another important note: i no longer live in the province where the event had and the arraignment will take place, so if i am in fact asked to testify, it would really have to be performed remotely/through CCTV because i don’t have the means (i am employed and a student) to travel.
TDLR; i witnessed the event surrounding criminal charges laid against my ex, am i likely to be requested as witness in the trial?
edit: i wasn’t asked nor did i make a formal witness statement to the police. however, the night of the incident i was held in a cell in the same station as him (because i was publicly intoxicated and freaked out when the incident happened). we were there for maybe 4 hours and then released and told there would be no charges pressed against him. then, we were driving in his car 3 months later and he got a call from the police asking him to come to the station. we got there and they arrested him, read the charges, etc. i don’t remember the police asking me anything other than if i could drive myself home in his car.
edit again: there were a LOT of people around when it happened that would have also seen it, but i was the only person present who was known to my ex.

The defense and the prosecution today made their closing statements in the New York criminal case against Trump for falsifying business records to hide a $130,000 payment to adult film actress Stephanie Clifford, also known as Stormy Daniels. The payment was intended to stop her account of her sexual encounter with Trump from becoming public in the days before the 2016 election, when the Trump campaign was already reeling from the Access Hollywood tape showing Trump boasting of sexual assault.
The Biden-Harris campaign showed up at the trial today with veteran actor Robert DeNiro and former police officers Michael Fanone and Harry Dunn, who protected the U.S. Capitol and members of Congress from rioters on January 6, 2021. In words seemingly calculated to get under Trump’s skin, DeNiro said, “We New Yorkers used to tolerate him when he was just another grubby real estate hustler masquerading as a big shot,” and called him a coward.
When Robert Costa of CBS News asked campaign spokesperson Michael Tyler why they had shown up at the trial, Tyler answered: “Because you all are here. You’ve been incessantly covering this day in and day out, and we want to remind the American people ahead of the…first debate on June 27 of the unique, persistent, and growing threat that Donald Trump poses to the American people and to our democracy. So since you all are here, we’re here communicating that message.”
Yesterday, in remarks at Arlington National Cemetery in observance of Memorial Day, President Joe Biden honored “the sacrifice of the hundreds of thousands of women and men who’ve given their lives for this nation. Each one…a link in the chain of honor stretching back to our founding days. Each one bound by common commitment—not to a place, not to a person, not to a President, but to an idea unlike any idea in human history: the idea of the United States of America.”
“[F]reedom has never been guaranteed,” Biden said. “Every generation has to earn it; fight for it; defend it in battle between autocracy and democracy, between the greed of a few and the rights of many…. And just as our fallen heroes have kept the ultimate faith with our country and our democracy, we must keep faith with them,” he said.
His speech at Arlington echoed the message he delivered to this year’s graduating class at the United States Military Academy at West Point, where he urged the graduates to hold fast to their oaths. “On your very first day at West Point, you raised your right hands and took an oath—not to a political party, not to a president, but to the Constitution of the United States of America—against all enemies, foreign and domestic,” he said to applause. Soldiers “have given their lives for that Constitution. They have fought to defend the freedoms that it protects: the right to vote, the right to worship, the right to raise your voice in protest. They have saved and sacrificed to ensure, as President Lincoln said, a ‘government of the people, by the people, and for the people shall not perish from the Earth.’”
“[N]othing is guaranteed about our democracy in America. Every generation has an obligation to defend it, to protect it, to preserve it, to choose it,” he said. “Now, it’s your turn.” Biden spent more than an hour saluting and shaking the hand of each graduate.
In contrast, Trump ushered in Memorial Day with a post on his social media company, saying: “Happy Memorial Day to All, including the Human Scum that is working so hard to destroy our Once Great Country, & to the Radical Left, Trump Hating Federal Judge in New York that presided over, get this, TWO separate trials, that awarded a woman, who I never met before (a quick handshake at a celebrity event, 25 years ago, doesn’t count!), 91 MILLION DOLLARS for “DEFAMATION.” He then continued to attack E. Jean Carroll, the writer who successfully sued him for defamation, before turning to attack Judge Arthur Engoron, who presided over the civil case of Trump and the Trump Organization falsifying documents, and Judge Juan Merchan, who is presiding over the current criminal case in New York.
The message behind this extraordinary post was twofold: Trump can think of nothing but himself…and he appears to be terrified.
On Saturday, May 25, Trump had an experience quite different from his usual reception at rallies of hand-picked supporters. He was resoundingly booed at the national convention of the Libertarian Party in Washington, D.C., where Secret Service agents confiscated squeaky rubber chickens before his speech. Attendees jeered Trump’s order, “You have to combine with us,” even when he reminded them of his libertarian credentials—tax cuts and defunding of federal equality programs—and promised to pardon the January 6 rioters who attacked the U.S. Capitol.
Trump also promised to pardon Ross Ulbricht, who founded and from January 2011 to October 2013 ran an online criminal marketplace called Silk Road, where more than $200 million in illegal drugs and other illicit goods and services, such as computer hacking, were bought and sold. Most of the sales were of drugs, with the Silk Road home page listing nearly 13,000 options, including heroin, cocaine, ecstasy, and LSD. The wares were linked to at least six deaths from overdose around the world. In May 2015, Ulbricht was sentenced to life in prison and was ordered to forfeit more than $180 million.
Libertarians want Ulbricht released because they support drug legalization on the grounds that people should be able to make their own choices and they see Ulbricht’s sentence as government overreach. Trump has repeatedly called for the death penalty for drug dealers, making his promise to pardon Ulbricht an illustration of just how badly he thinks he needs the support of Libertarian voters. But they refused to endorse him.
Trump appeared angry, and on Sunday, as Greg Sargent reported in The New Republic, he reposted a video of a man raging at MSNBC host Joe Scarborough. In it, the man says that when Trump is reelected: “He’ll get rid of all you f*cking liberals. You liberals are gone when he f*cking wins. You f*cking blowjob liberals are done. Uncle Donnie’s gonna take this election—landslide. Landslide, you f*cking half a blowjob. Landslide. Get the f*ck out of here, you scumbag.”
Trump’s elevation of this video, Sargent notes, is a dangerous escalation of his already violent rhetoric, and yet it has gotten very little media attention.
Last November, Matt Gertz of Media Matters reported that ABC News, CBS News, and NBC News provided 18 times more coverage of 2016 Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton’s comment at a fundraising event that “you could put half of Trump’s supporters into what I call the basket of deplorables” who are “racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamophobic,” than they provided of Trump’s November 2023 promise to “root out the communist, Marxist, fascist and the radical left thugs that live like vermin within the confines of our country.”
CNN, the Fox News Channel, and MSNBC mentioned the “deplorables” comment nearly 9 times more than Trump’s “vermin” language. The ratio for the five highest-circulating U.S. newspapers was 29:1.
Clinton’s statement was consistent with polling, and she added that the rest of Trump’s supporters were “people who feel that the government has let them down, the economy has let them down, nobody cares about them, nobody worries about what happens to their lives and their futures, and they’re just desperate for change.” She said: “Those are people we have to understand and empathize with as well.”
Sargent noted that news stories require context and that Trump’s elevation of the violent video should be placed alongside his many threats to prosecute his enemies. While there is often concern over disrespect toward right-wing voters, Sargent writes, there has been very little attention to the presumptive Republican presidential nominee’s posting of “a video that declares a large ideological subgroup of Americans ‘done’ and ‘gone’ if he is elected.”
Scott MacFarlane of CBS News reported yesterday that Republicans have ignored a law passed in March 2022 requiring the placement of a small plaque honoring police officers who protected the U.S. Capitol and the lawmakers and staffers there on January 6, 2021. It was supposed to be in place by March 2023 but has not gone up. A spokesperson for House speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) says his office is working on it. Kayla Tausche of CNN reported today that three of the police officers at the Capitol that day—Sergeant Aquilino Gonell and Officer Harry Dunn, both retired, and Officer Daniel Hodges, who is still with the Washington, D.C., metropolitan police—will be traveling to swing states for the Biden campaign to tell voters that Trump threatens Americans’ fundamental rights.
Finally, today, Melinda French Gates, co-founder of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, announced $1 billion in new spending over the next two years “for people and organizations working on behalf of women and families around the world, including on reproductive rights in the United States.” Only 2% of charitable giving in the U.S. goes to these organizations, she wrote the New York Times, and “[f]or too long, a lack of money has forced organizations fighting for women's rights into a defensive posture while the enemies of progress play offense. I want to help even the match.”

2024.05.29 05:26 TariqMuhammad2u Aaron Rodgers Immunized Status Controversy

Aaron Rodgers, supposedly, told his team, Green Bay Packers, he was Immunized after positive Covid status. He lied according to some.
According to Aaron Rodgers, his comment may have seemed 'misleading'. Even though, he apologized, controversy over his status statement, as Immunized, persist with him akin to criminal and civil charges had he sneezed on someone's 6 year old unvaccinated grandchild in a closed area after lying 🤥 about his Covid vaccination status.

2024.05.29 05:04 whatisvapor [Tennessee] Filing a benefits claim: on the Voluntary Disclosure section, what are the Best questions to put "I do not wish to answer" for?

I am currently filling out a claim on the jobs4TN.gov site, and just reached this "Voluntary Disclosure" section - although the description at the top states that "These questions are for reporting purposes only and do not impact your eligibility", in actuality, would any of the questions in this section have any sort of impact on how much benefits payment I would be eligible to receive? (based in Tennessee, that is?)
These relevant questions include:
1: "What is your gender?"
2: "What is your race?"
3: "What is your ethnicity?"
4: "Are you a veteran?"
5: "Are you disabled?"
6: "Are you currently homeless?" (only Yes/No options)
"Have you been arrested/convicted of a crime? If so, you may be eligible for additional support services and programs."
"Have you registered for Selective Service?" (only Yes/No/Documented Exemption options)
If I was to answer Male, White, & Not Hispanic or Latino for the first 3 questions, would this have any kind of potentially negative impact on how much compensation I am to receive (at least when compared to if I selected a different answer besides "White" , and/or selecting "Hispanic or Latino", for instance) and how much financial compensation I would be eligible to receive?
Would choosing "I do not wish to answer" for these questions (at least the first 3) instead be a better option? And what is the importance of each question in regards to this section's impact on my potential benefits compensation? (Or do they all matter equally, or not matter much at all, really..?)
But overall, would there be any potential for a difference in payout based on one's answers here, given the current political climate, DEI (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion)-conscious businesses/corporations/departments, etc. that would result in higher compensation perhaps if I didn't truthfully answer to being a "White Male" so to speak? Lol.
Ultimately, I am just trying to find out if I should provide the answers Male, White, Not Hispanic or Latino, No (not a veteran), No (not disabled), No (arrested/convicted of a crime), Yes (registered for Selective Service),
OR if I should use the "I do not wish to answer" option instead, and on what questions would this be BEST to use this answer as a substitute?
Should I maybe just say "I do not wish to answer” for those first 3 questions regarding GendeRace/Ethnicity, and more accurately answer "No" for the veteran and disabled questions? Would selecting "I do not wish to answer" be more beneficial of a selected answer on these first 3 questions - would they have any positive impact on how much compensation I’d receive? Do you think using this answer matters less on the next questions asking if I'm a veteran, disabled, or convicted criminal?
Regarding the "Have you ever been arrested/convicted of a crime" question, what would be the optimal choice? You would assume "No" would clearly be the best answer if applicable, but the statement next to the question saying "If so, you may be eligible for additional support services and programs" makes me think otherwise perhaps...
And I have a rather unique situation regarding this one.
Basically, I was convicted several years ago for marijuana / paraphernalia possession charges, and have since had these charges expunged from my now-clean record back in February; so they technically should not be on my record anymore, and I can now lawfully answer "No" now for any "past convictions/arrests" questions I encounter, like this one here in this claim. Wondering what the best answer to choose is for this one: Yes, No, or I do not wish to answer?
My apologies for the lengthiness of this post; but any and all input - advice, comments, suggestions, even warnings, all is appreciated!!

2024.05.29 04:44 higurashi0793 As a 9, how do you deal with online toxicity?

Right now, I perceive the internet as a very hostile place. Specially social media like Twitter or TikTok. I stopped using TikTok because every time, no matter how hard I try to curate my FYP, it'd show me ragebaits and constant political arguments, and I noticed it started to affect my mood and I'd be angry and irritable all the time. It's been a long time since I stopped using Twitter, but from what I hear, it gets worse by the day.
I was watching a video essay on YouTube about people like Pearl Davis, "influencers" who make rage content, and the sole concept of making yourself be hated on purpose just to get attention (or money) was so wild to me. How are people so desperate for attention that they'd do and say all kinds of nasty things just for clicks and views? Even going so far as to commit crimes or be a public nuisance.
And the constant political arguments and infighting. I swear I couldn't go a day without seeing two or more people argue about something, anything, and try to make the other person sound like they committed a war crime or something.
It's not that it's bad to have opinions or discuss a cause or political ideology. I discuss my opinions too, and I disagree with people sometimes. It's just the way that it looks like almost everyone nowadays wants to have something to be angry about, to have an excuse to lash out at someone, or bully someone without feeling bad about it, so they use social justice as an excuse.
I almost found myself falling into that same mindset of being angry about anything, and I had to step back and think things through. I was starting to focus too much on the negatives and unable to see the good side of things. I don't want to be angry all the time and judge everyone under unreasonably high standards, or picking something they say and interpret it in the worst way possible. I want to be able to see the best in people, even when they might be flawed.
Nowadays, I try to keep myself busy with things like videogames, books or cooking, and I only watch YouTube video essays. I feel myself getting better, slowly, but I'm feeling less angry and I'm not so focused on negative things anymore. But I also feel kind of disconnected from everything too.
How do you feel about all the anger and hostility on social media? Does it get to you sometimes? If so, how do you cope with it? Other types are welcome to comment too!

2024.05.29 04:09 Storms_Wrath The Human Artificial Hivemind Part 518: A Falling Tower

First Previous Wiki
Penny gazed at the quartet of Elders. They were all wearing the merchandise she remembered from the last Judgment, which was exceedingly awkward. Mainly because they were wearing shirts with her face on them. But it was also oddly endearing, in a way. Until now, she hadn't seen too many Elders that were on her side.
Elders that weren't just Kashaunta or the familiar faces she already knew, like Spentha or Rho and Sai, actually showing appreciation of her, felt odd. Even if these ones went a little too far in it.
"You're even more beautiful in person, Liberator," one said.
"Uh, thanks. I appreciate that. I'm glad that you all like me. Rho and Sai told me that you all are interested in something I can give you?"
"Yeah. Maybe a short interview? We won't be like that airhead reporter. We'll ask the good questions."
"Yep, we will."
"Right then," Penny said. "Well, I'm glad to meet you."
"Thank you. Now that we're here, we'd like to know how you plan on taking care of the gang leaders."
"Well, presumably by imprisoning them. I don't think they deserve to die, even if others do. I'll leave that decision up to Justicar and his various judges in the criminal system."
Penny didn't like having to lie blatantly. She wanted to kill the slavers quite brutally, but doing that was a bad idea right now. Saying it also was a bad idea, for a similar reason. And Justicar's system was worryingly preferential to Elders, from what she'd looked up after the meeting with Pundacrawla.
"Aren't you worried that the Judges won't give proper justice?"
"I trust Justicar to do everything that is necessary."
Another lie. Justicar would do whatever he could to maintain his image. Hopefully, that wouldn't be at the cost of the Alliance's very existence.
"Got it. By the way, what's it like being human? Walking on only two legs. It seems kind of unstable. Do you fall a lot?"
A genuine curiosity from them was another breath of fresh air. It was the kind of question a quadruped would definitely ask, which put her more at ease about the nature of what they were trying to do. Even more than their evident support of her, with all the merch they were wearing. Penny felt a smile crack at the corners of her lips, unbidden.
"Not really. We can use our arms to steady ourselves pretty well. Obviously it's not as easy to balance on our two legs as it is with your four, but it's still good enough. In fact, the sprinters in the Olympics use all four limbs, since running as fast as possible also requires pumping our arms. As for what it's like to be human, it's hard to describe. For many of us, it will feel colder or warmer than Sprilnav would feel in the same temperatures, due to thinner skin. Our eyesight is more frontal than yours, given our lack of snouts, so our blindspots are a lot bigger. Our feet require shoes for rough ground, and we heal slower than you by around 20%. We can't really clack our jaws to the scale that you can, though we can make them meet."
Penny bared her teeth, showing as she opened and closed her mouth. It was nice to be able to talk about things like this.
"The Olympics?" one of them asked.
"It's a competition about athletics," Penny said. "Running, jumping, throwing, diving, swimming, skiing, snowboarding, and a lot of sports. There's specific divisions, too. Like how there's a 100 meter dash, 200 meter dash, 400 meter dash, and even an 800 meter dash for those with high levels of psychic energy. Though really, psychic energy and genetic editing have been messing with the events for a while now. And there's a Winter, Summer, and Space Olympics, each with different sorts of events. They move from city to city, though the Space Olympics are pretty much always on either Luna, Ceres, or Mercury. There's a lot more information out there on various events, but it's an old cultural practice revered by the entire species. Even more so since Phoebe's increased the prize pools for everyone."
"How does your species handle space in general? I know that you guys did things way differently before First Contact."
"We did. Mining companies kept tight control on all asteroid mining, while nations controlled planets like Earth and Mars and large planetary bodies like Luna. Supposedly, a few people planned for a cloud city on Venus, but we couldn't risk having such a vulnerable population because they'd have to rely on giant balloons to survive. That would probably be the least secure way to live, given the existence of rogue organizations and all that.
As for spaceships, most of them since we really colonized Luna come equipped with spacesuit bays, zero gravity water and food packs, oxygen tanks, emergency seats, specialized anti-micrometeorite hulls, and radiation shielding. A lot of the older military ships also were equipped with big radiators until World War Three, when it all became masses of drone warfare, with the big ships kept mainly for cargo and lanes where mass drone control was impossible.
Once the Vinarii came and we got shields, we started building big again. After all, it provided a huge number of jobs, and in the post-war economies, especially with VIs in place, a lot of people needed work. But we still go and do asteroid and moon mining, star lifting, and energy gathering. We built an orbital ring around Mercury, the closest planet to Sol, to help with all of that. It doubles as a production hub, too. Now, it's all in more systems and with a lot more friends."
"Speaking of aliens, what theory does your people have on why so many creatures resemble one another? Our jaws are adapted for hard shelled creatures, and we're told that many planets have oddly similar variations of those."
"Crabs."
She guessed what they were getting at.
It is odd, isn't it? Nilnacrawla observed.
Perhaps that is another one of the Source's whims, Penny thought.
Maybe.
A few of the Elders made exclamations of shock.
"You even have a word for them that directly translates!"
Penny chuckled. "Yeah, carcinization is a bit of a meme in the science community. But I've heard the most mainstream theories since the First Contact are that the Source itself is uncreative. It has a certain template of creatures which it largely doesn't alter, though it can take in inputs from beings close to it, perhaps even influencing them."
"Influencing them?"
"Yes. Modern depictions of wendigoes, folkloric creatures from North America, a continent on Earth, are shockingly similar to the Knowers in appearance. The internet depictions of them in particular like to emphasize canine qualities, and often show them with skulls visible directly, and with dark brown or black fur. Recent depictions, as in the past 300 years, differ from their original appearances quite significantly, with the canine characteristics in particular being enhanced.
We have sorted through all known images of these creatures and found roughly 80% similarity with the Knowers and tens of thousands of images that are literally exactly the same as Knowers. The ones we searched all came before World War Three, far before even the First Contact with the Vinarii, much less the Knowers who were entirely underground at the time due to the radiation of their home star. We believe that the Source managed to influence this facet of human culture with the actual existence of a real creature.
Other examples exist, like how the Trikkec look very similar to Komodo Dragons, Vinarii look very similar to insects known as a mantis, and the Acuarfar look exactly like insects known as wasps with the single exception of their furry snouts and green instead of yellow markings. The Sprilnav species itself shares high amounts of similarity with a fictional species known as Elites in early 2000s culture, particularly with your jaws, though you all have red skin instead of grey or brown.
The Junyli, Dreedeen, and the wanderers are the main species without high amounts of appearance in our cultures at some point. This correlates with the idea of the Source being the influencer, as their predecessors all were used to fight it. Many species of the galaxy look like parts of our culture or Earth's creatures. The proximity of these examples makes this far more suspicious than if they were across the galaxy.
But since they existed first, the only answer must be that the Source brought the influence to us first and planted the ideas in our heads. As for the ones which look like Earth creatures, all of them are old enough evolutionary branches that copying from them to Earth makes more sense. Though the references centering around the early 2000s is quite odd, it is also roughly when the internet came into wide existence, so it is also possible the Source gave the ideas a push so they would propagate, for an unknown reason. Like if it seeded the ideas that propagated across the early global network Humanity used."
"Hmm. Fascinating. We've seen evidence of the 'seeding' process among some historical nations near the galactic region of Earth before. So the Source re-uses and alters depictions of life and also life itself?"
"Maybe," Penny said. "Unless the Source is more directly tied to life than we think. There's a conceptual Death, but no conceptual Life. Isn't that odd?"
"Conceptual Life died in the Source war."
How did that really work, though? Penny asked Nilnacrawla.
Imagine a conceptual being. A few of the Progenitors, as well as Narvravarana, went up to try to harvest its power. It refused, and Narvravarana used its unique abilities to try and force the deal.
Why was your civilization like this?
Excess and greed, partly. But we couldn't really do much more expansion. Vertical expansion also had its limits if we wanted to remain relevant for the remaining lifespan of the universe. So Narvravarana, along with a few of the greatest rulers and leaders of Sprilnav society, started looking to other dimensional planes. They figured it was best not to let the problem get too much worse. Or at least, that is what they say. I believe it was to harvest more resources to use against our surrounding enemies.
You didn't have any allies? Penny asked.
At that time, all the powers of the universe were enemies. All the allies eventually merged through millions of years of normalization. We happened to get on the universal stage the earliest, so other civilizations we encountered had little choice but to surrender their independence. Some fought, others didn't, but the outcome was the same.
That seems terrible.
It was, though the other universal civilizations were no better. Some of them just exterminated all alien life they found that couldn't fight back. In that sense, the pre-war Sprilnav civilization was one of the greatest, and that's why I fought for them. Obviously, I'm biased in that regard, though.
Thanks for telling me, father.
No problem, Penny.
She refocused back on the conversation at hand.
"But a thing cannot be alive if it dies. The concept of life doesn't work that way. So maybe the Source just... took in the concept of life? Or absorbed it into whatever psychic energy really is, considering that it's responsible for all of our existence?"
"That's so crazy it might actually be true," one of the Elders said. "You're incredible, Penny."
"Uh, thanks. You're all pretty great too." Her eyes drifted to the images of herself on their clothing. She couldn't really help it.
"I have a question for you."
"Yes?"
"Do you know what I'm fighting for?"
"I assume since you're asking it here, you don't just want a one word answer," an Elder said. "I would say yes, and for the liberation of the Sprilnav from the stain of slavery. Though going deeper into your history, you have also fought for other species, either in wars or just generally moving around. It does look aimless, mostly, since the galaxy's so big. But I'm sure you've got a way through that."
"In some way. Part of why I'm here isn't just about my people. It was at first, I admit that. But as I have lived here, on Justicar, for days and weeks, I've seen you less as alien. It makes it easier for sympathy and easier to break out of simple mindsets. So far, there are many problems, but there are distinct pieces. The first is that many people want to uphold slavery. I'm not sure why, but they do. It isn't profitable, and it isn't moral. Robots are cheaper in every way, and don't need food or water.
That means it's illogical or emotional. So I could try and solve the problem with violence alone, but it won't be addressing the cause, only the symptoms. I need to get to the heart of the matter. And I think it has to do with Elders' memories and the gradual woes they have accumulated going through life. I don't want to tear that away or drug them into believing they're fine. I want to find a way to outlet that productively. The second part I have identified is scale. The galaxy is enormous, and your species is incredibly numerous. I could fight planet by planet for the rest of my life, and liberation would still be difficult.
That also means I'd need a better way of doing things. Maybe an economic or political incentive. Emotional reasons will not work permanently, nor will logic, since we are in this situation. I have found several ways to address this. Sadly, since the gangs are likely monitoring this feed, I can't just outright say my strategy. All I can ask you all to do is to believe. Believe that I have a solution, and that I and those who stand with me are working on it. Believe in me because I believe in you."
None of the Elders questioned or ridiculed her words. Most of it was because they were fans of her. But one of them, an Elder named Rahautiti, had a distinct glint in his eye. Their gazes met only momentarily, but Penny could tell he knew.
And so she appeared in the mindscape, even as they concluded the interview, which would be the first of many. It was a ploy to just talk about human culture and ideals a bit more, to get it out there. Because the hivemind's theory was correct.
In the universe, ideas had power. That power could be weaponized against those who previously stood to gain. The first part of it was the image: Nova as an unbeatable bastion. Lecalicus as the Beast, a monster capable of star-crushing rage. Twilight as... whatever she did. Penny wasn't really familiar with the Progenitor's image too much, and the various names, like the Silent Night or the Smiling Darkness, were just so unbelievably edgy she cringed every time she recalled them.
But Rahautiti understood so she moved her mindscape avatar to see him.
"Hello again, Penny. I am no threat."
"I know. I'm glad that your group is led by someone as capable as you, as well as the other groups you dabble within."
"Who discovered it?"
"Phoebe. You met with Ezeonwha, and the android wanted to ensure you weren't a way for Yasihaut to kill him."
"Yeah. We did get approached about that, actually. We're supposed to kill Ezeonwha when you walk into the Judgment hall. Of course, we won't do this, and she won't be able to retaliate against us easily while there."
"Thank you for your honesty, Elder," Penny said. "It seems I'm in your debt."
"Nonsense. 2,839. That is the number of children I have had. 2,626. That is the number of children of mine which were enslaved. The remaining 213 died in unrelated incidents, with nearly half of those involving slavers killing them. I remember all of their names, and all of their faces, Penny. I want all the slavers in this universe dead."
"I cannot achieve that."
"You cannot," Rahautiti agreed. "Not with my help or even that of Kashaunta and Lecalicus. And certainly not right now. I have not lived this long to be incapable of compromise or patchwork solutions. You show great promise. I understand your aversion to killing and the circumstantial reason why you are not doing so now. I will not grow upset if you do not resume killing when the Judgment ends. Nor do I harbor a grudge against you for the speeding space entity you left outside the room to avoid uncomfortable publicity. You are incredibly young.
A sliver of a life. But you are strong, and you are mature. That sliver of your lifespan already outshines all I could do with a trillion more years, Penny. You are right in that this isn't something you can punch your way through. Trauma is part of why slavery still exists, despite it being a wholly unjust reason for the Elders to make such a sport of it. I am sure you know the story of the war, with a great hero in your head and Kashaunta at your side. My line of work is what I started to help you. Every thought about you being the Liberator, every eye that glances on you freeing slaves, helps you to gather conceptual energy. My talent happens to be great enough to sense the Pact of Blades you have, as well. If you want, I can teach you how to hide the mark on your soul and your mind."
"I would like that, yes," Penny said. "And thank you for being so reasonable. I will ask Kashaunta to protect you from what consequences come for refusing the offer on Ezeonwha."
"There are going to be attacks on him, you know. Him and your ship."
Penny felt an odd feeling in her soul. Cardi's power flared around him, and she squinted at the sky. She just barely saw a sliver of a tentacle. Most would have mistaken it for a normal speeding space entity. But here? On Justicar, with Exile obviously not being the cause?
Only one being would cause that. Fate.
Given the subject of their conversation, it was obvious what was going on.
Penny tapped Rahautiti's jaw, adding a thin mark of conceptual power so she could easily find him again. She focused on the conceptual mark she'd left on Ezeonwha. A twinge of conceptual energy came from it. It was accompanied by various impressions, like fear, pain, and acceptance.
"I have to go," Penny said. "I will be back later. Displace."
She appeared next to the 102nd Visitor Welcome Office but not next to Ezeonwha. It was carnage everywhere she looked.
"Champion!" an unknown Elder yelled. "I am Elder Na-"
Her rising fury surged, and it took all she had not to dismember him. The distant thought of the Judgment stayed her hands, though only just.
Penny's fist collided with the Elder's jaw at twice the speed of sound. A piece of his jaws flew free. Bone fragments hit the ground behind him. Hundreds of soldiers fired on her, and she slammed them to the ground with pure will. Penny tore their guns away and sent them each to pummel the Elder in front of her with as much brutality as she could. His powerful armor wasn't as capable of defense against physical attacks as it was against her psychic energy, and so he fell.
"You... cannot save him," the Elder spat. Fields of psychic suppression fell upon her, reducing her power.
"Manipulation through Determination," Penny growled. "De-"
No! Nilnacrawla said. Do not kill him! Not yet!
"What goes up will go down."
Air hardened around the Elder and accelerated rapidly.
The Elder smashed into the shield five miles above with a speed just slow enough that he wouldn't die. He fell from it and then hit it again at a more modest speed. He'd bounce on that until the Guides came to get him.
But Penny had another target. One she had to save instead of attack.

High Judge Tassidonia awoke to the sound of explosions. He grabbed his swords, his main gun, and the personal shield he reserved for only the most dire occasions. The sky was erupting in war all around him, and buildings were already falling nearby. The spires of skyscrapers rained down upon the entrances to the Underground, crushing thousands of fleeing Sprilnav under their wide impacts.
His implant identified members of the gangs nearby, making their way to his home.
"Retribution Cycle!" Tassidonia cried. A hidden door opened, and he boarded a small hovercraft that sported a high amount of defensive and offensive technology, a gift from Justicar for dealing with all that he had related to the Judgment. Only this time, he wouldn't be on the next one. But already, the destruction was spreading.
Micro-missiles rained upon friend and foe alike. Several detonated against the layered shields. The mounted turrets on the side of his hoverbike shot lasers into the enemies his implant identified.
"Elder Tassidonia!" an Elder cried nearby. "For the crime of defying the will of-"
Tassidonia called his fury to bear. He rammed his mind into the enemy Elder, disorienting her. She reeled, about to attack, when a thick laser smashed into her chest. It pushed her against the wall, and Tassidonia kept the pressure up until her body melted. He listened to her screams impassively, occasionally sending blasts from his gun at the gangs when their members started to stray too close.
The thick red beam did its work within twenty pulses. His swords began to float beside him, keeping pace as he sped away from his home. The entire apartment complex shuddered and began to lean, its foundation being destroyed by some effect below. Tassidonia abandoned it with only minor regret. He'd known this moment would come. Everything he needed was already with him.
He linked into the Guide network, directing squadrons to attack the breaches he'd identified. Orbital strikes fell upon them in quick succession. Thick beams of light pierced through the lower planetary shields from orbital platforms, their guns honing in on Justicar's enemies. Tassidonia's implant was linked to the grid as well. So when he eyed buildings occupied with too many gang members, orbital strikes fell on them a few pulses later.
Fire and plasma rained all around him. Explosions and smoke blossomed all around him. More missiles fell from his hovercraft. A fighter ship appeared beside him, its simple stealth revealing itself to his eyes. Tassidonia waited for the pilot chamber to open, and his craft stowed itself behind him when he got in. It was fully equipped, so soon, Tassidonia was in full control of a weapon of war.
His first order of business was detecting the gangs' most fortified areas. He peppered those bases in shield-weakening mines, followed by bunker-buster missiles. Several anti-air turrets hit him, but his shields prevented them from taking him down. He dropped three high-end Butcher Androids into the fray of the largest battles.
One of the adjacent fighter wings in the separate shield sector dropped a nuke. At that moment, Tassidonia made a decision.
Whatever insanity was going on right now wasn't worth staying here on his own. He turned his ship upward, narrowly avoiding nearly fifty missiles shot from another gang fortress, which was really just the lower floors of a supermarket. Thick slabs of concrete were being set up by androids and slaves from the Underground. All he could do was watch from above and attempt to mark those that might be a problem.
Justicar's Grand Fleet was moving in, though only the carriers and their escorts were doing anything of any scale. The armies were mobilizing, and it seemed that war had finally broken out. Justicar, while isolated due to the Judgment, would have to win a war that threatened to topple his rule entirely.

Ezeonwha woke when the walls around him shuddered.
An earthquake?
Groggily, he activated the lights in the room. Phoebe's android was charging in the wall. Her limbs swayed with the motion. The walls shuddered again, and the lights went out. Thin, tiny cracks spread in the walls, increasing his worry factors massively. His implant notified him that this wasn't a dream. Distant screams reached his ears, and he went to the window.
Hordes of Sprilnav were running on the ground, tripping over each other to escape. He heard the thump of footsteps approaching from outside. The android activated, standing up.
"Move away from the doo-"
An explosion tossed him across the room. A Sprilnav carrying some sort of mouth weapon faded into view for a moment, smoke recalibrating the stealth field. And then he was gone. Phoebe smashed into the Sprilnav, her fists pummeling the assassin faster than Ezeonwha could comprehend.
Phoebe's arms turned into swords, and she stabbed the Sprilnav at least fifty times in a single pulse. She turned to grab him, but before she reached him, a second explosion sent him flying out of the now-shattered window.
The massive skyscraper loomed large, and he saw the ground beneath it ripple. Dull thumps sounded from below, and large, circular caverns opened beneath the 102nd Visitor Welcome Office. The whole building started to list forward, and Ezeonwha frantically activated his emergency personal shield as he started falling faster and faster. A bullet hit the shield. And then a second one. Gunshots echoed out in the distance, and he saw other Sprilnav falling from broken windows in the falling skyscraper. Gunfire erupted on the streets as Guides engaged a growing army of attackers bubbling up from basements of shops and businesses.
He saw spurts of blood exit the Sprilnav nearest him, bullets tearing holes through the woman's body. Piercing screams surrounded him, a terrible chorus that reminded him of the worst wars he'd fought in. But here, his training could do nothing. She was already dead, and he knew that he was the target of this whole attack. His eyes watered, and Ezeonwha felt so powerless. So useless.
A Corrector emerged from the side of the tilting skyscraper, eyes fixed on Ezeonwha. Then he looked down. Somehow, Ezeonwha knew when the orders had been sent. He knew that it was Astipra in the distance, a jetpack on his shoulders burning a thick flame beneath him.
Astipra looked back at the building and flew toward it. Ezeonwha felt the wind rushing past the shield as pressure. Astipra, far above, vaporized falling chunks of the skyscraper with blasts from his arm cannons. He pressed back against the skyscraper, the jetpack going into overdrive. The metal bent inward, and the groaning and twisting structure continued its fall. Blasts of light from Astipra again vaporized the set of falling chunks.
"Penny," he said. It was almost a prayer, really. His desperate mind was scrambling for whatever it could get. "Please, save me!"
He didn't know if she could hear him. Logically, it was impossible. And in a battle such as this, unlikely as well. Rippling explosions erupted across the facade of the falling skyscraper as rockets struck it. More explosions bloomed as lasers from distant police vehicles, Guides, and Astipra destroyed more of the fast-flying missiles and rockets. They pounded on the world around him, a horde of madness threatening to break his brain. He could feel the wind and gravity equalize as he reached terminal velocity.
And all he could see was the world descending into war around him. The 102nd Visitor Welcome Office continued to slump and lean against Astipra's best efforts. More bullets hit Ezeonwha's personal shield, and peppered the Guides moving over to save him. Air ambulances were shot from the sky. Even small fighter crafts were shot down by powerful ground lasers. EMPs thumped, disabling all the higher functions of his implant before he could think to use it.
A much larger explosion bloomed out, and Ezeonwha followed the rocket's trail to an Elder on the ground, standing in the wreckage surrounding a sudden tunnel opening. The Elder stared at him in glee, and he lined up another shot. Two Guides fell upon the Elder, who flew up using a jetpack to cut them in half with his sword. A hard light hologram lifted a large gun, pointing at Ezeonwha as he fell.
His eyes widened. Ezeonwha did everything he could. He angled his legs and arms. He pushed at the air. He even hefted the meager psychic energy he had, struggling with all his soul to escape the death he could feel was coming to him.
Guides swarmed beyond the shield appearing, while gang soldiers died by the hundreds to carpet bombing. Personal shields sprang up to block the explosions, and the Elder had survived. A thick red laser cut one of the fighters in half from the smoke. Above him, the collapsing facade of the skyscraper consumed Astipra entirely, though large gouts of plasma and thick explosions emerged from within. He could survive if it fell upon him, but Ezonwha could not.
Penny materialized far below, closer to the field of battle. A sweeping wave of gang members began disappearing. A bullet smashed into her head and her stomach, detonating in bright explosions. A personal shield flared and disappeared. Missiles and lasers slammed into Penny by the thousands as psychic energy gathered. A constant roll of words fell from her tongue, but without his implant, they were not translated.
Missiles crumbled into dust. Lasers impacted raw space in front of Penny before bending down and back to their origins, destroying automated turrets. Bullets still hit Penny and the Guides by the thousands, firing too quickly and densely for her to entirely block. But the large ordnance from the gangs continued to work against them.
Penny looked around, confusion evident on her face. But amidst the thousands of wounded and dead Sprilnav falling from the broken windows, Ezeonwha was hidden too well.
Shattering glass could be constantly heard, and he could feel the distant screams in his soul. A bullet smashed into his personal shield again, disabling it. A pulse later, he lost feeling in his legs.
He tried to reach out to her mind, but the war in the mindscape was equally intense. Too many Elders and Guides battling it out along with various suppression artifacts made it all impossible. He could sense Penny's influence, but couldn't directly reach her.
He let out a breath, knowing it to be the final one.
I'm sorry, Penny, Ezeonwha thought.
I wish you luck in the Judgment, and I am sorry I caused this to happen to you.
Penny finally appeared in front of him, eyes wide-
Blood erupted. A searing pain in his head told him his implant had just shorted out. And in the mindscape, he saw a mental attack heading for him, its brutal power evident. He closed his eyes.

2024.05.29 04:04 Weekly-Supermarket40 What on earth could this mean

This is my second time typing this (accidentally deleted the first one, so i'll try to be as concise as possible. When I say group, I mean my grandma (mom's mom), aunt and mom. Just fyi (IRL I'm staying with my grandma and aunt atm while i'm on my holiday, and my parents are in the same city) (the dream takes place in the same city that I live in, although the places that appear in the dream I have never seen before except for my aunt's house). I'll cut the dream to the weird bit.
The group and I were in a different housing area looking around, and when we were going to leave, I drove out but suddenly realised that the car could drive between trees and narrow spaces and I would feel the wind on my face. Turned around and realised that I was actually riding an elephant with me as the driver and the rest of the group sitting on the elephant's back.
Once we got to the shops-lined main road where the car was parked, it was getting dark; mom handed me a hand of bananas to feed the elephant and then she gave me a single banana that fell out. Because the elephant was busy eating the bananas i gave earlier, i just placed the single banana on the ground below the elephant, gave it a pat and got into the car. My aunt started driving when suddenly I saw the elephant running into the traffic chasing the single banana that rolled away and a car dashed into the elephant (i saw the car getting to an inch away from the elephant, closed my eyes and started crying so I didn't actually see the elephant getting hit. I felt so guilty. If only I was patient enough to wait for the elephant to finish eating to feed it the single banana instead of putting it on the ground, it wouldn't have gotten hit.
Since we drove away, we stopped where we could and my aunt helped call the emergency services (I wasn't very functional atm) but they didn't help for whatever reason, so I decided to call the traffic cops under the pretence that something was holding up the traffic in the area. I lied to them saying that I was a spectator, and saw all the above happening whilst i was in the car and the cop said that they'd go investigate. He also said that they'd identify the criminal who caused injury to the elephant and bring them to justice (me, but in retrospect, he could have meant the guy who hit the elephant). I knew i might get caught but i didn't care as long as the elephant could be rescued. I was worried the elephant might die by the time they got there. Can't remember if anything much happens after that.
When the cop asked for the location, I gave a street name that sounded very plausible, it is also the name of the general hospital in my city. Once I woke up, I googled the name, and a street with that name does exist, albeit looking very very different.
P.S. I am the kind of person who cries watching animal documentaries.

2024.05.29 02:41 papersnart I let down a client who believed in me.

Obligatory “not a social worker” - I’m a jail support case manager. Most I’ve got is a BA in criminal justice, I’m 25, and this is my first job in the social work field (been here 7 months).
I came into this knowing that it’s impossibly hard for people to access resources, especially housing. But I (maybe naively) thought that my privilege/position in the field would allow me to have access to more knowledge and resources, so I would be better equipped to help my clients. Definitely not the case, and my org has no connections to housing or support to offer me, so I’m kinda figuring this out on my own here.
I just met with a client who asked for my help in setting up housing. He’s in a recovery program, and I could not reach him or anyone there for weeks. I didn’t know his discharge date until a few days ago, and he was supposed to be discharged this week. Because of this, I wasn’t able to find a place for my client in that short of a timeline. Of course, the other options are shelters (to be placed in programs), or a halfway house. So my client opted to extend the stay in recovery to give us more time to find a stable living arrangement.
My client was understandably frustrated and upset that this situation happened the way it did, and he seemed to blame me. He said that he was disappointed that I wasn’t able to find housing for him, insinuated that I didn’t care about him and that he’s just paperwork to me, that I didn’t try enough to get in contact, and that this all sucked more because he believed in me.
I know I truly did try to help him to the absolute best of my ability. I know I still plan to. But this was really hard to hear and I’m having trouble not beating myself up about it. Has anyone dealt with this? How do you dust yourself off and keep going? How do you prepare your clients for the ridiculous barriers of bureaucracy without deflecting accountability from yourself?
Thank you❤️

Was D.A. Bragg Right to Bring the New York Charges Against Trump?
Though we don’t know how Bragg weighed his charging decisions, we do know something about how his predecessor did. In February 2021, then-District Attorney Cy Vance Jr. placed the Trump probe in the hands of Mark Pomerantz, whom he appointed as a special assistant district attorney. Pomerantz, then about 70, was a veteran defense lawyer who had also served two stints as a prosecutor with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, including one as the chief of its criminal division. In February 2023, Pomerantz published a book about his experience, “People v. Trump: An Inside Account,” which is my source for his perspective on the case.
Soon after surveying the evidentiary landscape, Pomerantz concluded that he had “predication”—a good-faith basis—for investigating a charge of “enterprise corruption.” That statute, which carries a theoretical maximum 25-year prison term and a mandatory minimum one-year term, is New York’s equivalent of the federal Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act. It permits prosecution of those who operate a business through a pattern of criminal activity over an extended period of time. Pomerantz considered that statute to be the “ideal vehicle” for pursuing Trump because
we had evidence that Trump had grown the business, and augmented his wealth, reputation, and power, through a pattern of criminal activity. The potential “pattern” crimes included defrauding persons and entities about his net worth and the value of his assets, underpaying his federal and state income taxes and property taxes, falsifying business records in order to conceal his agreement to pay hush money to women who claimed to have had extramarital affairs with him, operating Trump university as a consumer fraud, setting up a charitable foundation that was actually used as a personal slush fund, submitting fraudulent insurance claims, and other potential crimes.
Some of the conduct Pomerantz was describing above had already been adjudicated or litigated in civil proceedings. In 2018, Trump had settled three consolidated consumer fraud class actions relating to Trump University, including one brought by the New York State Attorney General’s Office, paying $25 million, which was about 90 percent of what the plaintiffs sought. In December 2018, Trump also agreed to dissolve Trump Foundation to resolve the state attorney general’s charges of a pattern of persistent illegal conduct, occurring over a decade, that includes extensive unlawful political coordination with the Trump presidential campaign, repeated and willful self-dealing transactions that benefit Trump’s personal and business interests, and violations of basic legal obligations for nonprofit foundations.”
In November 2019, a state supreme court justice had also ordered Trump to pay $2 million in damages stemming from his foundation’s abuses.
snip
Soon Pomerantz brought a criminal case for tax fraud against Trump’s closely held Trump Organization and its longtime chief financial officer, Allen Weisselberg. Pomerantz hoped Weisselberg would cooperate against Trump. Later, in August 2022, after Pomerantz left the office, Weisselberg did plead guilty to a 15-year scheme to defraud federal and state tax authorities. Specifically, he admitted all 15 felony charges against him, including grand larceny in the second degree—which carries a maximum 15-year penalty—as well as criminal tax fraud, scheme to defraud, conspiracy, offering a false instrument for filing, and falsifying business records. But Weisselberg, who had worked for Trump for decades and, before that, for his father, never did implicate Trump. Also later, in December 2022, a jury convicted two Trump Organization entities, Trump Corp. and Trump Payroll Corp., of 17 felony counts, including criminal tax fraud, scheme to defraud, falsifying business records, and conspiracy.
The prosecutions of Weisselberg and the Trump corporate entities, which were defended by skilled teams of lawyers, proved to be time- and resource-draining affairs for the district attorney’s office. By the summer of 2021, Pomerantz later wrote, he realized that an enterprise corruption charge “was not going to happen.” It was “too ambitious for the human and investigative bandwidth” of “a local prosecutor’s office.” Pomerantz began to focus on Trump’s provable role in propagating his brazenly false financial statements over about a decade—statements that Trump showed to lenders to qualify for lower interest rates. Pomerantz worked on this probe in conjunction with the Office of the New York State Attorney General, which had already been investigating these allegations before he arrived.

2024.05.29 02:27 One-Spinach Story criticism

I am the only one who finds aspects of the story for the first game… kinda lacking? Like there’s multiple parts in the story and character development that just kinda fall flat to me, and feel like the writers didn’t give it a second look after writing the first draft. SPOILERS ahead for anyone who has not completed the game.
First off, isn’t it kinda weird how little Welkin does to protect his little sister from racism? At least following the story of the main missions (I never 100% completed the game so I could have missed some conversations in the side content). We see people essentially call Isara slurs and insults and he hardly ever speaks up to defend her, just saying the squad should “work together” and “talk their disagreements out”. Overall, he just comes off as very dismissive of her persecution and just lets his squad insult her anytime they want without ever putting proper order (yeah I know they’re not official army, just militia, but still). It feels like the writers wanted to write about the struggles of racial prejudice but just… didn’t know how, at least not properly, not knowing how actual people react to being treated that way.
Following on that racism and darcsen train of thought. What’s up with Zaka? He gives a whole speech about not hating your enemy and not trying to kill them, just wanting to survive. Which in its own right is stupid as hell when you think about it. You’re basically fighting Nazis, hell bent of wiping out your people, standing up against that is basic human behavior, it’s not even “vengeance” as Rosie puts it; just basic justice to want to see war criminals pay for their actions. Yet, despite that whole speech, he join the army not 2 minutes later and when pressed on it, he just tell the rest to “not think about it too hard”. They literally brush aside his whole moral dilema and expect people to ignore it. Just feels like lazy writing on the part of the developers. And don’t even get me started on how unnecessary Isara’s death felt in the end after all that girl went through.
Also, what the deal with the main character’s fear to use the valkyria’s power? Especially Welkin, he’s extremely adamant on never using it, despite it literally saving him and the nation when Alicia was awakened. Yeah it’s only natural he’d be wary of it when Alicia was shot to awakened it and that he doesn’t want the nation to become completely dependent on it. But still, he’s so afraid it, not even letting Alicia stop the Marmota with it before it reaches the capitol. They could have easily thought of a strategy to stop it using that power that didn’t involve her death; but no, they instead let the giant tank crash straight into the capitol, killing who knows how many soldiers and civilians. Welkin’s just comes off as a naive hypocrite who ignores how that power saved him and how it can be used for good without totally depending on it. The game made him and idealist (which I love), but forgot to put logic behind it, making him just sound like an idiot at times. This could have easily been fixed by showing us that said power always enacts a heavy toll on the world no matter how it is used, or having it risk Alicia’s life every time it’s used or simply making it so they only use it sparingly due to some limitation. In any other games or series, having one of the main cast suddenly gain special powers capable of saving their nation would be met with excitement, but here it’s treated as a curse with little reason to when Alicia is the perfect person to wield it since she’s responsible and kind. Overall that whole debacle over using her power or not felt stupid, saying they don’t need power to win as if you don’t spent the whole game upgrading units and making new weapons to gain more “power” just comes off like that “we don’t win by destroying what we hate, but protecting what we love” scene from the Star Wars sequels. Side note: after some thinking, part of me wonders if they just did all that to stop Alicia from just ending the whole conflict quickly, or by suddenly becoming more important than Welkin and needing him to still “save her” and be the main hero.
Lastly, the game’s attempts to humanize the empire just feel insulting. We see these people commit heinous war crimes left and right, gunning down civilians, creating concentration camps, BURNING PEOPLE IN SAID CAMPS ALIVE FOR NO REASON, and much more. They act like literal Nazis, but I’m supposed to feel bad when one of their bloodthirsty soldiers dies in the forest just because he mentioned his mom? Or when Maximilian said his mom was killed in a power struggle? Cry me a river, it comes off as a joke after we see how comically evil these people behave and what they are based on. Makes me wonder if those parts, along with the sections making the federation look bad was added in by the writers due to the fact Japan worked with the evil people these characters are based on and needed something to make them look not totally evil or not the only “bad guys” as a way to subconsciously defend the actions of their own country. This might sound like a stretch to some, but with the political messaging a lot of animes have even to this day, like AoT or Ranking of Kings, this at least feels like a possibility.
Just to wrap it up, I don’t mean to say the story or game is bad. I still had a ton of fun playing it and think the characters and world are very well done and easy to get lost in. But overall, this game still seems to have issues that I’m surprised I didn’t see anyone else mention anywhere. Just wanted to mention this to see if there was anyone else who also thought like me on this.

2024.05.29 02:00 Monthemod Ethical Ways To Use Purchased Papers/Projects!

The purpose of this sub-reddit is to connect users/students with top quality academic freelance writers. The other purpose of this sub-reddit is to promote the ethical use of academic writing services to create research/model projects. Below I will list ways to intelligently use the products you receive, as well as the benefits!
Students should use the papers they buy as research guides as opposed to turning it in. Sometimes it's difficult to start an essay and think of talking points for your body paragraphs. By hiring a writer to create a model essay on your topic, you can analyze the points they made throughout, as well as utilize the sources they found!
Having an expert crafted paper as a guide also allows you to develop supporting points, possible rebuttals to include, closing statements, as well as acting as inspiration to build off the content that's already presented.
Purchasing writing services/products also benefits you by acting as a study sheet for upcoming exams or tests. The projects you receive from experts in the subject will allow you to receive the content in an organized and structured manner. For example, hiring a molecular biology expert to write a paper on cell division will act as a tremendous guide to study for upcoming exams on Cell division, mitosis, etc. Especially if your teacher isn't particularly helpful in explaining certain things you struggle with!
We have a handful of legit academic journals and websites that utilize academic content writing for articles and SEO benefits! Hiring freelance writers with legit credentials in their field can add legitimacy to academic blogs, businesses, or social media pages.
We've had a few writers on this sub contacted by professional academic journals to take part in works that have been published with major universities or editorials!
