2024.06.09 15:38 Only-Gas4199 Pet Store Karens

I (F22) recently moved in with my fiance (M22) and I have started a new job at a pet store. Before I moved, I lived in a relatively small countryside town and everywhere I worked the customers were always pretty friendly. Sure there were a few bad apples, but for the majority of it the residents were very nice.
Now I live in a large city, and the people here are actually atrocious. To preface, I have only worked at this store for 2 months.
The first Karen came in on a slow night but we had a lot of stock/deliveries to take care of so my mind was scrambled. She came up and asked for 40 crickets (we sell crickets for reptiles), usually people NEVER get the exact amount because it’s quite difficult to count jumping creatures in a bag. I gave her the bag of crickets and she left, she comes back in maybe 10 minutes later and she was fuming. She was screaming at me saying that she went in her car and counted each cricket one by one and only got 33. I apologized and told her I would fix it immediately and that it wasn’t a problem. She stood by me the entire time degrading me and belittling me. Another customer came over to ask for crickets, and this woman looked at her and said “Well, be sure to count them, because they LOVE to short you here!” She got her 7 crickets and left.
The second one happened maybe 2 days ago? I was on the phone with a customer and I had a long line forming in front of me so after I hung up I focused on getting my line of 10+ people cleared so I could finish the rest of my work. I was on my last customer when a woman behind me starts yelling that she’s been standing there waiting for me to wait on her. She was behind me. Whenever someone has a question they’ll usually stand in line, come directly into the line of vision, or call out to get our attention. She never once tried to get my attention, ever. My manager came over to help her and I was hearing the hateful comments from across the store. Here’s the irony: when she was checking out, I was working on something behind her. She said to my manager “tell her to have a blessed day.” But, I was right there? I guess she couldn’t see me!
The last one was yesterday, and it was a bit milder than the others. This woman came up with two bags of dog food, and apart of our rewards program is a free bag after so many bags have been purchased. She wanted to buy one and check the receipt to see if she had a free one, but she didn’t specify that. She said, “Just scan it so I can check it.” Now, as an autistic woman, that did not make any sense to me. I was trying my best to ask her if she could clarify what she meant, and she started yelling at me. “I just wanna see how many I have! God, how hard can it be to just check?” I eventually figured out what she was trying to do after she made me feel incredibly stupid, and it turns out she didn’t have a free one. She wasn’t even close.
TL;DR- PLEASE!! Be nice to customer service workers. $11.50 an hour is not enough to be yelled at over crickets and dog food.

2024.06.09 15:35 saint_lily No support for people trying to ethically rehome their pets in Southern Ontario

TLDR: Trying to rehome my dog in Southwestern Ontario ethically has been a nightmare. Been trying to rehome my dog since January. After 6m of trying to rehome through rescues, I’ve started approaching humane societies. The waitlists are over 6m. We are struggling. There is an extreme lack of support for those needing to rehome their dogs in SW Ont.
I adopted my GSD/lab mix from the local humane society when he was 7mo old. When we adopted him, the humane society shared that he would do well being placed in a home with another dog. We have another female GSD so we thought it would be a good fit.
As he got older and more confident (around 1 year old), he began resource guarding his sister. He got into a couple of fights over guarding her from other dogs. Eventually, he got into a dog fight which involved my dog sitter getting bit in the process of separating the dogs (he did not go at her. She got bit pulling him and the other dog apart by the collars). Now we had to pay for separate daycare for them when we needed care and walking them together became so stressful because other dogs would set him off, which then would set my other dog off. She began picking up behaviours she never exhibited. My partner and I decided it was not a good fit and we decided to start the process of rehoming. We never stopped attempting to train the behaviours out of him and we only stopped socializing him with other dogs when it led to safety concerns. He truly is a different dog on his own - which we’ve experimented with when my partner would take our other dog to his parents for the day or weekend.
I didn’t want him going into a shelter again. He is smart and trained and has no health issues. The resource guarding of his sister and the safety issues and stress it has caused, was the problem. I figured him needing to be the only pet in the home wouldn’t make it challenging to rehome him via a rescue.
I started this process in January - I contacted over 40 rescues within 3 hours of where I live, trying to get him into a foster home situation. Nothing. A friend of mine came forward offering to foster him - even after providing a foster home and offering to pay for his care, only one rescue agreed to help. Only for this to fall apart in a month due to my friend being evicted because her landlord is selling the home.
He is back in our care, we sent our other to my in laws who are in their 80s.
I’m now reaching out to humane societies. Waitlists for owner surrenders are 6-8m! I’ve been crying non stop the last two days. I feel horrible for my dog, I feel horrible our dog that isn’t home, I feel horrible for my partner. The tension in the home is high. This situation is also bringing up PTSD responses in me from growing up in foster care.
I’ve made social media posts, made him a profile on Home to Home (a humane society run rehoming website) and he’s been posted to Facebook by the rescue he was being fostered with. We are getting nowhere.
I’m being told by the rescues and shelters that although they feel for our situation, that there has been an influx of surrenders and strays, creating very long waitlists.
We are taking it day by day, reaching out to additional humane societies as rejections keep coming our way. We just want what’s best for him, our other dog and our household. Our animal welfare situation is horrendous.

2024.06.09 15:35 Dangerous_Morning286 VR Sim Racing Thoughts

Hi
I am Sim Racing since 6 months now and am doing so in VR only (Quest 3 with link cable). I am not a Pro and I dont have a clue on how to setup cars, tyres etc. BUT I still like to have a realistic driving experience where I do need to improve myself to get better and not some Need for Speed / Forza Horizon casual type of game.
My setup is a Fanatec DD Pro (8Nm) mounted on a Playeat Trophy. I am generally happy with the hardware and did not have issues with it. Software is another thing...
I love sim racing when I am not fighting with technical issues. Theese issues are so annoying that on some days I don't even want to start playing. I will list a few of them.
-Oculus Software taking 5 Minutes to startup, sometimes hangs itself up in setup process -Something always has to update when I just want to play -PC audio not switching to Quest 3 by itself-> having to do it manually everytime I want to play -Sometimes my wheel/pedals are not detected ingame even tho I power them on the same way every time -VR integration in games is absoulute dog shit: Cant use wheel analog-stick to navigate menu. Had to buy a wireless keyboard with trackpad and need to switch between keyboard, quest controller and wheel constantly (depending on game). Why do I even need the quest controller... No way to access desktop view without taking the quest controller and clicking twice to get to it. Hand tracking which would probably solve the issue is not available while using quest link (wtf why?) -Quest 3 battery is trash even when plugged in (max 2-3 hours at max settings) -Constant fiddeling with settings: Cant just swap games as every game needs different kind of fanatec settings. Setting up Force Feedback to feel good is a pain everytime, takes a lot of time and in some games you have to do it even from car to car.
Now to the games I played:
Asetto Corsa: Incredibly annoying that you want/have to use mods to get a decent experience from the game. Initially I spent like 6 hours to get everything looking decent. The need of content manager also implies the need of desktop view and the wireless keyboard between runs. If it works its fine tho. Story mode has a KTM car (level 4 I think) that spins the rear out no matter what I do an locks up steering while braking. Cant procees in story as this level blocks me from getting further. Other people experienced the same thing, its not just me.
Dirt Rally 2.0: Once setup correctly (2 hours of fiddeling with settings) generally very satisfied with the game. One of the better VR experiences I had and not had many problems. Can recommend it.
Asetto Corsa Competizione: Unusuable VR experience on my RTX4090. Getting head ache after 10 Minutes because the picture is very distorted and generally just bad image quality. Gameplay itself feels very good tho. Best force feedback feeling personally.
Automobilista 2: Has to use keyboard to navigate menu. Other than that the VR experience and also driving experience is pretty good. Game lacking story mode content.
iRacing: Incredibly expensive. The game feels great but I hate to play online. This game is for not for me because of the type of content and payment system.
Gran Turismo 7: Fuck Sony. Would love to play it on PC. Would be the exact type of content that I would wish to have from a sim racing game.
Project Cars 2: Couldnt get it to run in VR.
My hopes and dreams for future VR sim racing: I hope that Asetto Corsa Evo which should release to early access in 2024 will have a very very good VR integration. If I start the game, I like to have a wheel-navigateable menu, nice graphics without mods, story mode, good force feedback presets and dialed in presets for different popular wheels in general.
I dont even ask for much and it's a shame that things just dont work out of the box. I get that sim racing and especially in VR does not have to biggest audience and ist still rather niche compared to fortnite and that shit.
When I show my VR setup to my friends and letting them drive they all love it. But they can just sit down, slap on the headset and drive. They don't know the amount of time I had to invest to get everyhting running how it should. I just can't recommend them to get themselves a rig even to I would like to..
I know I am ranting here, but this is just how I feel.
I would love to hear other VR users experience on sim racing in the comments.
Keep racing and stay safe.

2024.06.09 15:15 Outrageous-Gur3094 Breeder asks for puppy back because I’m relocating - what to do

So in a nutshell I moved to Australia on a working holiday, where I met my ex. We started dating and got engaged, and we started living with each other. During the year we were together, he bought two puppies. The first one was from a pet shop and the second one was from the show breeder. I am immensely close to the second one and as we broke up and I flew home, he agreed to letting me keep the second one and to transport her back to my home country. I got in touch with the breeder about this a month ago and she consented. Fast forward to today when I asked for information of her microchip, she basically told me she doesn’t want us to keep the dog anymore, that it’s not a healthy or happy environment for her because we decided to split, and that she will be taking the dog back in the next few weeks. I was flabbergasted because my breakup from my ex was amicable, we both care deeply for each other still and the dogs were always well loved by both of us. They get professionally groomed once a week, raw fed on a balanced diet with regular vet checkups. Heck, I bought them Tiffany & Co collars! I tried to call my ex but he’s at the movies with his friend right now and I’m scared. I don’t want my dog to be taken away and made into a breeding dog and I’d prefer if my partner could just keep her in the country if relocation is such a big dealbreaker. Any advice? Are breeders allowed to just take away a dog for no evident reasons?

2024.06.09 15:07 jerytom I didn’t buy a horse - 8 months later update

A little background: last summer the horse our family had been leasing for 2.5 years was taken from us in a sudden and cruel way ( not death but think owner gifting him to us one day us scoping out boarding options and than ghosting / blocking us the next never allowing us to say goodbye to the horse ). This was devastating to us all I took it very hard and my daughter who was 3 when we leased the horse just didn’t understand what was happening.
We knew we loved having a horse in our lives and decided to explore the option of buying so that we wouldn’t encounter another situation like this. We visited a few horses 2 we really liked and almost bought one but in ultimately decided against it.
There were a number of reasons I decided it wasn’t the best decision but it was mostly because finances and the worry / responsibility of caring for a horse for the rest of its life not knowing what may pop up for the horse or us financially. It just made me feel very insecure and I would do anything to keep animals and not rehome them but a horse is much different than a dog and cat in terms of housing etc and it’s important to pause and consider this. I also didn’t want to add the extra stress of that responsibility on to my family now. Even though I knew it was the right decision I was heart broken and it was very difficult.
Now: I’ve been plugged into a lesson barn for the last 7 months taking lessons weekly and I am really enjoying it! Our old lease horse knew his job and we knew how to ride him. He loved trail riding but I realized outside of him I truly didn’t know how to ride a horse so if I ever do want to own and revisit it I need to truly learn to ride. I am really progressing in my riding and it’s completely different from what we did with my lease horse so I am learning new things and really enjoy the small successes of something finally clicking I have been working on. Also just being in a lesson barn environment has exposed me to so many different aspects of horse care taking and riding.
I love my lessons but felt that they are so fast and I don’t get a ton of 1:1 time with the horse outside of catching grooming tacking and riding. Also the horses at the lesson barn are pretty indifferent to humans and attention because they are just passed through many hands and used by many riders throughout the day. I was really missing having a bond with 1 particular horse and being able to have more relaxed barn time. Also my daughter isn’t interested in lessons but likes to groom and lead and she wasn’t getting that. Anyway I made a post on FB in a few local horse groups and found the perfect lease situation for our family. We have been leasing the horse for the past 6 months and we are really enjoying it. The lease is affordable the owner is great the barn is very laid back and peaceful.
All this to say… saying hi to horse ownership was very difficult but it was the best decision for me and my family. I remember calling my husband the day I said no to the horse and made a final decision to not pursue other horses and I was sobbing. I wouldn’t have though then that I would he as happy as I am with my current set up that is not ownership. I am grateful to be able to enjoy horses in different ways and not feel stressed of the financial burden and longevity/ unknown of ownership. My lessons and lease are costly but they are more affordable snd temporary. I have been able to modify work / finances to cover these and not feel stressed working extra shifts not being able to have time to truly enjoy my horse etc. I do think I still long to own a horse and maybe I will one day in a different season of life but for now I am happy.
If anyone read this and is on the fence about horse ownership I would encourage you to reach out in local horse groups and write what you are looking for lessons, lease, bonding time etc. I am sure there are owners out there that would love to share their horses. It can truly be the best of both worlds without the stress and commitment!

2024.06.09 15:01 ibid-11962 Worldbuilding and Touring [Post Murtagh Christopher Paolini Q&A Wrap Up #10]

As discussed in the first post, this is my ongoing compilation of the remaining questions Christopher has answered online between August 1st 2023 and April 30th 2024 which I've not already covered in other compilations.
As always, questions are sorted by topic, and each Q&A is annotated with a bracketed source number. Links to every source used and to the other parts of this compilation will be provided in a comment below.
The previous post focused specifically on inspirations and other media. This installment will focus on Worldbuilding and Touring, how Christopher constructs his worlds, and how he goes about promoting them on tours. The topics aren't actually linked, but they both fill up around half a post and so are being joined here. The next and final post will focus on miscellaneous questions about the real world.

Worldbuilding

Creating Magic Systems
Did you have a research process when you were writing the Inheritance Cycle? I put a fair bit of thought into the story itself of the Inheritance Cycle, and then some general stuff as to the society and just kind of where things were in the world before writing it. I put a medium amount of thought into the magic system before I started writing, and then as I wrote the implications of it became much more apparent to me, and I really sort of dove deep into it. In retrospect, were I to create a fantasy world from scratch now, I would really put a lot of attention into that magic system and the society beforehand, just to have a good feel for that before I even start chapter one. I would put more restrictions on the magic too. I think the more restrictions, the more interesting, even the more realistic in some ways. [3]
If I were designing a magic system from scratch nowadays I would put way more restrictions on it because I find that the limitations are useful, I don't want the characters getting overpowered, but also just from a storytelling standpoint, incantations, rituals, spells, prayers, potions, all of those mechanical things are just kind of interesting and of course they give lots of opportunities for things to go wrong if you don't follow the correct steps. So I think if I were designing magic from scratch right now I'd put a lot of restrictions and rituals associated with it. So costs, more costs. [25]
What kind of hacks do you have to developing a magic system? Once I have a general idea of the setting, whether science fiction or fantasy, the first question I ask myself is how does it diverge from physics as we know it? Because that is a fundamental question that's going to determine what is possible in this world. It might determine what's possible with warfare, with politics, with industry, manufacturing, travel times, it could affect everything depending on what type of divergence you have. In the World of Eragon, the divergence is that living creatures have the ability to directly manipulate energy using their minds. The reason for that is kind of handwavy, although I have an explanation for it, but that is the divergence and then I tried to be as consistent and physically possible with it at every step of the way past that. When people play games you always get people who are looking how to exploit it. "What's the most I can get out of this game? What's the most I can do?" That's basic human nature. Science is a speedrunning nature I think. So the same sort of thing. You assume that if magic existed there's going to be someone sitting in their basement who's absolutely obsessive about it and is going to figure out every single advantage that that divergence gives them. And you have to be realistic and work that into your world and say "Well people aren't stupid. They are going to figure this out and use it in this way, and what are the implications, socially, physically, and everything else?" Once I have that then you can think about society and culture and everything else, but that basic physical difference from our reality is just to me fundamentally important to understand before I even begin to write. [25]
With standalones you're not dealing with continuity or what rule did you break or things like that. That's interesting, because I would say that writing a sequel for me is faster than writing a standalone. At least for me, the more I know the characters and the world, the faster, like I don't have to do the groundwork of creating a magic system, creating a society, creating the gods and the history. All that's done for me, so I can just slip into it like slipping on an old glove. [33]
Creating Religions
A socio-political religion in your world helps drive characters or stories or die-hard fanatic characters forward. How do you go about developing those? Have the courage to let your characters actually believe the things that they are supposed to believe. If you look back historically people really did truly believe these different religions and different systems. Too often I think with modern stories we have people only giving lip service to the supposed belief and instead having very modern attitudes toward it which perhaps doesn't always work. That's understandable if you want a character to be relatable to a modern reader, but there are so many examples of interesting belief systems throughout the world. To me that's something fascinating to write about. But the main thing is just accept that when people truly believe something they're genuine about it and then you can follow that from a logical and storytelling standpoint. What I'd also say is, if you're writing about something that is very different from your own belief system, assuming it's not like completely evil, to try to approach it with a sense of charity. With the understanding that everyone is searching for meaning and understanding. I've always had a soft spot for the old television show Babylon 5, because although I don't believe that the creator J. Michael Straczynski is religious, he writes all of his characters with great sympathy and understanding, he's never cynical about it, and he's not putting up straw man arguments or criticizing any of the characters. He's like "They're searching for meaning. They're struggling with the great questions as we all do, and each one is trying to solve those questions in their own way." And I always really appreciated that he wasn't being cynical about it or really shallow. [25]
Creating Languages
Did you think of the ancient language, not just as a mechanic, but also as a parable of our own language? I was thinking about how language itself feels like magic to me. You can write a story, you can convey information. Language in many ways is our greatest tool and makes us human along with, I would argue, our hands, our ability to manipulate objects and use actual tools. But one without the other wouldn't really work and wouldn't allow us to be a technological species. We could have language with no ability to handle tools, and then we wouldn't be what we are now. But I find language fascinating and I find the function of language incredibly interesting. And there is this idea in the real world going back to the beginning of time, that to name something is to understand it, and gives you a certain amount of power over it, whether that's a person or a physical object. And the ancient language is just taking that idea seriously. And I'm not the first author or tradition to do that, but is it a parallel? Is it a metaphor? I don't know if I'd go that far, but it definitely ties into the use of language and my ideas about it. What's crazy to me is there is a theoretical arrangement of words right now that would give us a massive breakthrough in science and physics. There's a theoretical arrangement of words that were I to write it or anyone else would influence how people think about the next presidential election to such a degree that it might actually changed the election. These are all theoretically possible and you can think of many many other things that you could do with language. We just lack the knowledge of what those arrangement of words are, and so we're constantly clawing our way toward new knowledge and new uses of language. [19]
The languages that you were playing around with in The Inheritance cycle, they were Germanic, Anglo Saxon based? The ancient language, the magical language, is based very strongly on Old Norse, which of course is Germanic or related to Old High German. The Dwarven language was invented pretty much from scratch although it is an agglutinative language like German is. And then the other languages have not appeared very much in the series. They're just little scraps here and there. To be clear, I am not a linguist, and I have not devoted the time and energy to developing these in a formal or rigorous way, the way that Tolkien did. Tolken was a linguist and that was his forte. I got far enough down that path while working on the Inheritance Cycle that I really began to appreciate how every word has a history and that history is inexorably tied to the history of the land. It's often said that Tolkien created Middle-earth just to explain his languages, as a setting for the languages. Which isn't entirely true, but there is truth to that. That's what I was encountering and I was realizing that I could spend 20 years, 10 years, just working on the languages and building this out. It might have been a worthwhile venture, but the tradeoff would have been no more books published during that time. I want to tell a story. [28]
What I would do these days, or what I did with other languages, is come up with a couple of words that sort of had a general feel that I liked and then extrapolating from those invented words, figuring out what consonants and vowels and clusters thereof that I wanted. Come up with some more sample words based off that and then start working out some grammar. Grammar is probably my weakest spot since at the time I wasn't really aware of non-English grammar systems and I've put some more attention in that since then. [34]
The language and culture that you describe in the books seem very real. How do you start inventing a language? You shamelessly steal from Germanic mythology and Scandinavian mythology, just like Tolkien did. But I'm no linguist, I did my best, I have a copy of the Nibelungen up on my shelf along with the Eddas, and I based one of my languages on Old Norse, which gave it a nice sound and feel. So the main thing is picking things that make sense for your world and then trying to be internally consistent. [2]
Creating Maps
At what point in your writing process do you start creating the map? I've created the maps at different times in different books. At first I thought I didn't need a map because I thought that a good book should be perfectly understandable without a map. You shouldn't need to rely on anything outside of the text in order to enjoy it. And I still think that's generally true, but a map can add a lot. So for Eragon, I did it partway through the book. If I were to do a stand-alone fantasy novel, I would definitely want to work out the maps and stuff before writing it. [12]
The map for Eragon, the original black and white map, I did about halfway or a third of the way into Eragon. My idea was, and I still kind of believe this, that a well-written book shouldn't need a map in order to understand the story. You should be able to keep your bearings just based off the text. What I ran into though was that I was getting lost in the world myself with the amount of places and things after a certain point. And so I drew a map. [34]
For me I think if you're creating something in the real world obviously that gives you certain constraints and certain advantages but if you're starting with something from scratch, I find creating a map right up front is really helpful because your story is not going to visit every square inch on your map so by filling in those other details on the map you're going to get more story ideas and also ideas for potential conflicts, travel distances. It all feeds into the realism of the story as well as potentially future stories. It's fun stuff. The downside is you could spend your whole life worldbuilding. There's a there's a book from World War Two called Islandia, and the guy just spent his whole life creating this island and its culture to the point of working out the actual layers of geography of stone in the island. I've never actually read the book, I don't know if it's any good, but I know it was fairly popular when it came out. [25]
What hacks do you have for for creating geography and points of interest within your world? When I was creating the map for Alagaësia I actually used a old National Geographic Atlas and traced over various coastlines and then distorted them and pasted on top of each other in order to get sort of a natural feeling coastline. Please don't compare the island of Vroengard to the outline of Greece. Please don't do that. And then you have Robin Hobb who just turned Alaska upside down for her map which I always love because I've lived in Alaska twice. I think she told me that she never actually expected the book to get published, but then she got stuck with that because everything was tied to the geography that she started with. [25]
I think that a good map ought to have lots of points of interest, and the tricky bit is, without getting so detailed that it becomes cluttered. You see that sometimes with real world maps, like atlases and stuff, where there's a ton of place names, city names, river names, road names. All of which are useful and necessary, but it can actually visually get in the way of the art, perhaps the artistic effect that you would want a fantasy map to have in a book or a movie or even a game. [12]
There are world generators that you can just click through. It's really easy nowadays with technology to build worlds just by snapping your fingers. Even with those tools, if you have the time and inclination, I think there is some benefit to redrawing or painting the maps in your own style. I don't know about you, I love seeing when the maps are from the author themselves. I remember Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn by Tad Williams. Tad did all the maps himself, and I love that. Even if it's imperfect or a little amateurish it just gives it a really nice feel. I love Tolkien's original art for the same reason. [25]
Creating Dragons
You are the creator of your own world. Do you feel that you have follow certain canons of fantasy worlds, for example, dragons have four legs and wyverns have two? Or do you feel that you can practically do whatever you want because it's fantasy and you create everything? Yes and no. No because I have already established rules and traditions and precedence in The World of Eragon, so I have to be consistent with that. But if I were writing a new fantasy, I would not feel beholden to any tradition. If I wanted to write a world where the dragons have three legs or feathers or something like that then I would feel free to do that. That's the great thing about speculative fiction is it gives you the freedom to write and create whatever you want to. The thing is when you have a genre where anything is possible it actually reveals the limitations of your imagination. And there are very few authors, myself included, who really make full use of that. But at the same time, limitations can make your fiction more interesting. I think it's important to pick some limitations and that will help actually improve the quality of your work. [7]
Why did you decide to have your dragons have a saddle? I was around horses growing up. And the thought of actually physically being on a creature with very hard scales was rather terrifying if thought about in a practical sense. And so it just seemed to me that there had to be some protection. [33]
When you're writing fantasy and you include dragons, especially a dragon rider fantasy, depending on how many there are there, it's actually quite a difficult thing to not solve all your problems with dragons. I think the solution to that is you focus on the problems that dragons present, which balances out the advantages. And of course people are smart, whether we're talking about humans or elves or dwarves or any other invented species. If dragons were real, you'd come up with counters to them, whether it's a bunch of giant ballistae on your walls, or building domed fortresses, or building underground. You would come up with solutions and it would negate those advantages. And that's always my issue with writing fiction with dragons in the real world. If it's a slightly more modern, then you have to ask, well, why isn't everything different in history? Like if dragons were a constant part of our world, architecture would be different, warfare would be different, politics would be different. Well, no, politics would be the same. What am I saying? [30]
I'm sure all of us have seen the fantasy paintings of like a knight in armor with a lance on a horse facing off against a dragon. Now, to be fair, a lance moving at a decent speed at a horse galloping will have enough kinetic energy behind it to punch through just about anything. It could do a lot of damage. But any decent sized dragon would move so fast and be so strong, you wouldn't have a chance with a lance. You'd need a giant crossbow. That'd be your only choice. The size of a dragon, intelligence of a dragon. Until you get to projectile weapons, you have no chance. [30]
We all know what any creature gets when they bond with a dragon. They get a dragon. But why would a dragon create that bond? Why would they do it? Is it the bond, is it their nature? I think for me, having other species bond with the dragons was essentially a way to keep the dragons from getting wiped out. Because dragons are such a huge threat. If you imagine in the real world, we don't suffer giant predators to be constantly predating and disrupting our world. We remove that threat. Especially if there's magic involved, the ability to remove that threat gets even bigger. So in a way I viewed the bond between rider and dragon as essentially self preservation for the dragons, if not the other species as well. Without some sort of symbiotic relationship, coexistence becomes very, very difficult. That, or the dragons have to be smart enough to just essentially remove themselves from the world and live off in the far off places. But that gets really difficult when you start considering how much they need to eat. I remember reading the Live Ship Trader series and I remember the end of that spoiler alert where it's become clear that true dragons have returned now. And it really was kind of an oh crap moment because you start thinking about what that actually means for there to be dragons in the world again. It's kind of like Reign of Fire. [30]

Promoting The Books

Touring Hazards
How did you do on your book tour? It was a lot. It was a lot. I did 50 days of touring last year between Fractal Noise and Murtagh. Obviously the majority of that was for Murtagh. And of course I had a couple other trips in there as well. I went to New York Comic Con. I had one or two personal trips. So there was a lot of travel last year. My goal is to not have as much travel this year. In general, the book tours were awesome, great crowds for the Fractalverse, enormous crowds for World of Eragon/Murtagh. I don't normally talk about this stuff, but since we're past it, it doesn't matter. I started touring for Murtagh November 6th and then got home for good on December 16th. But there's always a risk of getting sick while you're traveling. And I did pretty well in the US leg of things. And then over in Europe between the jet lag and not sleeping- I had a really amazing dinner, one of my publishers took me out to a three star Michelin restaurant. The problem was the dinner started at 8pm and didn't finish till midnight. And there were two or three desserts, and the last dessert was full of coffee, and I didn't realize it. Absolutely full of coffee. And I did not get to sleep until like four in the morning. And I only had three hours of sleep that night. So I think I got sick the day after as a result. I got so sick on the European tour that at one of my stops I had to call paramedics to my hotel room at 2 a.m. because I couldn't breathe. Ended up with bronchitis for the first time in my life. But I'll have you know, I did every event. I didn't miss a single event. I managed to do all my presentations and made it through in one piece. I've never, never backed down from doing an event, even while bleeding. Can you tell us a little bit about the time that you were bleeding in an event? Well, I was in Europe. I was touring for Inheritance, I'd already toured North America, and then I started in Europe, went to UK, and then I went to Australia and New Zealand. But first country was Germany, and I think I did Munich and Cologne, and then I ended in Berlin. And in Berlin, they had me in this wonderful theater that's like over 100 years old, which is very rare in the city, considering all the bombing during the war. And I'm backstage, which meant down in the basement of this theater. And there's like 500 people out waiting for me to make an appearance and there's someone introducing me and they say my name and everyone starts clapping. And of course you want to get on stage before the applause dies down. And the way you got onto stage in this theater was through a set of stairs. And it really wasn't even steps. It was almost like a ladder and it was wood. And the steps were so old that they were basically hollowed out from all the people that have gone up and down it over the years. So I'm scrambling up this and about halfway up, my right foot slipped off the edge of one of the steps because it was hollowed out and full speed, full strength, full weight, I slammed my shin into the edge of one of the steps, stumbled forward two more steps and did it a second time. But momentum, adrenaline, I keep going, I get up on stage, I waved to everyone. And fortunately for me, because I was speaking to a foreign audience, they had me sitting at a table with a translator and a presenter. So I got to sit down and the table kind of hit everything from view. And I start the presentation, start the event. And after about, I don't know, five minutes, I'm thinking to myself, okay, I've banged my shin before. We've all banged our shins before, but this really bleepin' hurt. So I looked under the table and the whole front of my jean leg on my shin is soaked with blood. There is blood dripping onto the floor and my sock is soaked with blood. So I poked my translator, the presenter next to me that I was doing a couple of events with, and I said, "Hey, look at this". And he glances under and his face just goes white. And I'm colorblind and I saw his face go white. And he said, "Do we need to call an ambulance?" And I'm like, "No, no, we're going to do this." So I did an hour-long presentation. And then I got up and managed to quickly limp over to a signing table. And no one really noticed that I wasn't feeling so hot. And I got behind the signing table, and I signed books for 400 or 500 people. And the funny thing is, I was traveling with this foreign rights agent publicist for Random House named Jocelyn, who was just an absolute beast of a woman. I love her to death. You have to understand, she did a European book tour with me while eight months pregnant. The woman was and is just very impressive. But she grew up on a farm. German family in the US, grew up on a farm. So I showed her my leg when I was sitting down to sign and she just looked at me and she said, "You need to go to the hospital?" I said, "Nope". She said, "I knew you were country. Good man." Slapped me on the back. So I finished signing and then I went back to the hotel and I had to get into a tub of water to soak my jeans off because the blood had dried and glued them to my shin. And the problem was I had a dent all the way down to the bone. And I really should have gone to a hospital because, sorry for the gory details, but what happens is when you get a dent like that, you lose the fat under the skin between the skin and the bone and it doesn't come back unless you get an injection to help it puff out and heal. And I didn't do that because I was on tour, there was no time. So the next day I had to fly to pretty sure it was Barcelona for the St. George Book Festival, which is a walking festival. So you have to walk from bookstore to bookstore in the city and do signings. But that was a bit rough. That actually took over a year to heal properly. I still have that dent. Stuff happens. I've heard some crazy stories with other authors. I'd rather it's my blood, not the fan's blood. [32]
Touring Difficulties
We've got blood and sweat, any tears from tour? On occasion. The biggest one is just being away from home. And if anything is a bit off for whatever reason, you can't just pop home and hold someone or do this or do that. It's just difficult to be that far away from home for so long. [32]
If you're not familiar with book tours, the way it often works is that you fly to a city, you get to your hotel room, you have a little bit of time to freshen up, maybe get some food and then you go to the bookstore and you do your event. And it has to be after people get off from work, so it tends to be a later evening event. If you have a large number of people show up, that means that that time spent talking and signing pushes fairly late in the evening. You go back, you get dinner, and if you're a semi-introvert like so many authors tend to be, you need some time to decompress, which means you probably stay up a little too late reading or writing. And then in the morning, you got to go get another airplane flight and go to the new city. All of which is fine, but going to the airport, doing those flights, with the time it takes to go through an airport these days, it means that the schedule has very little time in it. When I toured for Fractal Noise, the publisher one of the days had me fly from Tampa to Portland and I still had to do an event that day. Which I agreed to. It was my own fault because they had everything on the East Coast and I said, "Well, what about the West Coast? You know, I have readers on the West Coast. They need to get a chance to get a signed book." It was my own fault. But that can get rough when you're doing it for weeks on end at a certain point. You just can't recover. A day off? What's that? But it's a good problem to have. That people want to see you and want to read your books. It's an awesome career to have. [1]
I'm also a big fan of coffee naps. So I will drink a cup of coffee, usually my second cup of coffee, and then I'll go take a nap, and I will nap for about 30 minutes, because after 30 minutes the coffee wakes me up. And I find that 15 to 30 minutes is the perfect length of a nap for me, and if I go past that, I need to sleep for about three hours, because otherwise I get into the middle of a REM cycle, and if I wake up in the middle of a REM cycle, I'm just like groggy and drugged, and I feel worse than if I hadn't napped at all. And then of course, if you're on book tour, the way I have been for a while, you gain the ability to just close your eyes at any point and take a 10 minute nap 15 minute nap anywhere, and it at least helps you stay upright. [19]
Meeting Fans around the World
You just got back from the U.S. leg of your book tour — who’s making up the crowd? The readership is broad and probably older than it was back in the day. There are still a lot of 8-year-olds, but now there are grandparents, too. I’ve even met some kids who’ve been named after the characters, which is pretty amazing. Because people have been reading the series for so long, I tend to get a mix of incredibly detailed, hyper-focused, deep-dive questions about some of the lore, but also some more general ones about Eragon’s name. [16]
I'm sure you hear personal stories all the time especially at your readings and your your appearances. It must be lovely, and I guess overwhelming to connect with your fans. That's a good way of putting it: lovely and overwhelming. Everyone has their own personal history with these books. I have people showing up who named their children after the characters, or who've gotten tattoos. Oh my goodness, what's the one you get? Multiple Saphiras, Aryas, Rorans, a couple of Eragons. As a writer, you want people to read your stories, enjoy them, be affected by them. If they're affected so strongly they name their children after your characters, you feel pretty good about it. [28]
Are your European fans different from your American fans? I actually haven't met any children here who are named after characters from my books. That seems to be an American phenomenon. The language barrier sometimes makes it a little more difficult to talk to European fans. But the love for Eragon is just as strong in Europe as it is in the US. This is not your first time on tour in Europe. Is there something you're missing here? I actually noticed that hotels in Europe usually don't have ironing boards or irons. This is standard equipment in America. [24]
My great-grandmother was from Sicily and then my grandfather was from Bologna. I just found out recently that my grandfather as a child was tutored by Fellini's wife. [7]
My grandfather was the stereotype of an elderly Italian gentleman. He had a mustache, he cooked spaghetti and he made the most amazing red sauce for the spaghetti. He used too much profanity. He was quite the character. [35]
Amsterdam is a beautiful city, but if I had grown up here I would probably still have written fantasy, but it would probably have influenced the type of fantasy I write. [23]
I was just in Stockholm on book tour for my latest book. And I've sold a really large number of books, proportionally in Sweden, and I'd never been there before. And I was kind of curious what their thoughts and feelings were on it, given the fact that I have shamelessly pillaged, Anglo-Saxon Scandinavian mythology for my own work. And they said native Swedish authors don't write using their own mythology, they go into the more literary veins and they import and translate other authors who are writing about Scandinavian mythology and they enjoy it immensely, but it doesn't seem to be a homegrown thing for them, which is rather odd, I think. [30]
Old Norse is not so far from German, do you speak a little bit of German? I understand a fair bit. When I've done presentations in Germany, I've had children ask me questions in German, and I can sometimes understand the entire question without translation, but I only speak a few words. [Host 2]: Let's try it. Can you ask the next question in German? Of course. Oh dear. Translation please. That was not fair. But funny. Yeah, I was just asking, when you started writing the book, and it became not just one book, it became a whole world, it became a series, and I don't want to spoil anything, but if you read the first books and you read the later books, stuff comes up again, and it seems like you actually knew where it was going when you started writing, which is again insane because you were 15. Is that something you just got lucky, or did you really plan for a whole series when you started writing the first one? I planned because I tried writing some stories before Eragon, and I never got past the first five or ten pages because I didn't have a story. I would only have an inciting incident, like a young man finds a dragon egg in the forest. Well, fun, awesome, but that's not a story. So Eragon and the series as it was, was a writing exercise for myself to see if I could outline, plot, and then write at least the first book of a series. So yes, if you read the first book, Eragon, there's actually a scene, a dream sequence in the first book. And it is the very last scene of the last book. And I did that specifically so that I could point to it and say to my readers, "See, I knew what I was doing." But of course, it isn't the last book now. [2]
Before he finished signing them all he asked if I read Fractal Noise, I said yes. He then asked how I liked it. I said I liked To Sleep far more. And to be fair I did. But I could've been a little more less brunt about it. All in all I'm sorry Paolini. I hope you see this. Dude -- No need to apologize! I was the one who put you on the spot. I was just curious about Fractal Noise as it's pretty different from what I normally write. That said, I'm a big boy, and it doesn't bother me in the slightest if someone prefers one book over another. [R]
Have you been on TikTok? How do you find it? I have an account that my assistants post content on for me because I don't have the time and I don't want it on my phone, but it has been a really useful way to connect with readers, and I had a lot of people who came up during my book tour end of last year, who said that they found out about the events I was doing from the posts on TikTok. [33]
Outside of the tour, did you do anything to personally celebrate the release of Murtagh? No. Not to sound blase, but this isn't my first book I've released. Going on the tour is the celebration. Getting to meet the fans. It's an enormous expenditure of energy, time, effort, and it's very joyous and touching and meaningful for me. And I think for a lot of the readers. So that's the celebration. My team and I, we all kind of take a moment to pat ourselves on the back every time a book comes out and then it's back to the grind a bit. Also, I got to celebrate my 40th birthday while on book tour, and I got to celebrate it with my editor, my publicist, my former publicist who's been with me since the beginning. So that was really nice. [32]
Appearance
Being an author is like the best kind of semi-celebrity, because nine times out of ten, no one knows who you are, you can live a nice quiet life, and then you get to go out and meet people who like your work. And that's a real treat. I grew the beard partly to keep people from recognizing me. But then I've had it for so long that it doesn't work anymore. And I got tired of shaving. But the problem is the beard takes so much time and effort to take care of it, it doesn't save me any time. [1]
Did your hat end up getting fixed post-tour? Yup. Fixed it myself with a rivet. [T]
Any advice on how to wear a pirate's hat without it being weird? It's very simple. There's one ingredient. You wear it with confidence. That's all. [36]
Signing Books
People people don't maybe don't realize what an endurance race it is, especially when when books are this big and successful. Like the amount. I once did 9,280 books in an afternoon and a half at a warehouse. I had nine people helping. I stood. I find that if I stand, I don't use my wrist. I can isolate the arm. And I just had someone shove it under me, someone pull it out for me, and everyone else was boxing, unboxing and flapping. But it hurt. It really hurt. I dropped my first name this past year. For the first time in a 20 year career, I finally dropped my first name. Did you feel defeated? Yes. But I have kids now and I just could not afford the time and the strain on my body. I actually got two typewriters. I got really bad inflammation in my right thumb from all the signing and I find that typewriters alleviated that. Also heavier like mechanical keyboards seem to help. So I know like Robin Hobb has suffered some severe problems with her hands with the amount of typing she's done over the years. So yeah, it is an occupational hazard. [33]
I have to say, signing 30,000 sheets is SIGNIFICANTLY harder than mining or placing 30k blocks in #Minecraft. Lol. [T]
Do you have a PO Box or something? I’d pay shipping both ways to have you sign my books. P.O. box is listed on paolini.net. Just include return shipping, please. :D Alternatively, you can arrange signed copies through Conley's Books & Music in Livingston, MT. [R]
If I send a book to a P.O. Box and pay for shipping there and back, would you sign it? Yup. Address is on paolini.net [T]

2024.06.09 14:59 Ok_Compote_4100 I did something horrible

CONTENT WARNING: SA, suicide, violence, animal abuse 🚫
English is my second language so I apologize for any grammatical errors.
I’m not entirely sure why I’m writing this, maybe it’s a desperate attempt at salvation, a selfish effort to offload my guilt onto these lines and out of my body. Or perhaps it’s because I need confirmation of what a terrible person I am and how I should live the rest of my life accordingly.
For context, I was born into a very dysfunctional family. My parents’ marriage was doomed from the start. My father was a violent alcoholic, and my mother was emotionally fragile, providing motherly care with cold and unfeeling hands. I grew up with domestic violence at home and severe bullying at school. My father was extremely violent and frequently drove under the influence with my siblings and me in the car. He was also often verging on inappropriate behavior towards us.
I was SA’ed for the first time at 13. At 14, after four reports to the local authorities and two suicide attempts, I was finally placed in foster care. I ended up in an institution where I started using drugs, leading to addiction. This resulted in my involvement in very bad environments, leading to another SA at 15 and yet another at 17. My drug use escalated to the point where I began prostituting myself at 15. The authorities gradually gave up on me and my reckless behavior, placing me in my own apartment at 17, which only worsened my addiction.
One night, I took far too many drugs and became extremely ill, vomiting and lying on the ground, unresponsive. My vision blurred, and I temporarily lost my sight and my hearing. Lying there, I thought I was going to die. I had lost all control over my body and senses. It felt surreal, lying there in what I once thought was my immortality. But I made it through the night, and the next morning, everything had changed.
My entire personality seemed to shift. It felt as if something had changed in my brain. I became incredibly aggressive. Despite everything, I had never been aggressive before. I was always calm, a pushover who couldn’t set boundaries. I had never experienced intense anger until that day. I destroyed my entire apartment. The urge to hit things was immense and gave me intense satisfaction, which only intensified when I ran out of drugs, which was often. At this point, I was 17 years old.
I also became extremely paranoid. I had episodes where I would lie on the floor, hyperventilating for hours as the world spun around me. I would hit myself in the head repeatedly, almost wanting to tear my hair out. There was only peace when I got my drugs. Then everything stood still, and nothing hurt anymore. I also started hearing voices and seeing things. Now to the point. I just want to stop here and stop writing.
I found myself in many bad environments, including a friend of mine and his family living on a farm. We all did drugs together. The family had many animals, including dogs. In hindsight, it’s clear they were forcibly breeding dogs to sell them to the highest bidder. One day, while at the farm, high on drugs, the mother placed a puppy in my lap and said I could buy him. She said that It seemed like just what I needed. He was a half-German Shepherd, half-Pitbull mix. I took him home. I was selfish, wanting a puppy, a best friend, a relationship.
I had Chino for four months. I tried to do my best for him. I bought toys, food, and a bed for him. I briefly read online about what to do and what not to do. But I was ultimately completely unprepared for the task. It was the stupidest decision and absolutely terrible conditions for a puppy.
It ended up with me hitting him. It didn't take long before I had one of my blackouts where I became incredibly aggressive. In the four months I had him, I hit him multiple times. If he chewed my debit card, preventing me from getting money for drugs, or if he had an accident indoors—these were all normal situations to face when raising a puppy. He was afraid of me. There was nothing safe for him in that home. Although I cared for him, my version of love was completely twisted. To Chino, I became what my parents were to me.
After having Chino for 1-2 months, I turned 18, resulting in the authorities evicting me from my apartment. The system that had supported me my whole life suddenly didn’t care. It felt like an additional betrayal. I became homeless with Chino. I slept on the streets, feeling utterly lost and alone in the world. I was a broken person who had long since drowned, and I selfishly dragged Chino down with me.
After four months with Chino, I decided I couldn’t care for him the way he deserved. No matter how sick it sounds, I really did love him. I loved him, and I hurt him. I found an animal shelter that took in dogs for a fee. It was a place that provided the right training and ensured they went to the right families. I took him there and saw him for the last time being led into the shelter, distracted by a toy from one of the handlers. I broke down completely but also felt relieved. I called the shelter periodically in the following months to check on him. He had been affected by everything he had been through. He was understimulated and clearly traumatized. But fortunately, they found him a family in the countryside with several large dogs. It was the best news in the world.
Today, I am 26 years old. I am studying at university. I am completely clean and free from all drugs. I live in my own apartment, have a boyfriend, and have no contact with my biological parents. But I am haunted. Chino haunts me, or rather, it is my actions that do. The better I get, the more I can feel and sense, and the more I feel my overwhelming guilt. I think of Chino when I lie in bed at night. When I find myself laughing and actually being happy with my life. A part of my humanity disappeared with Chino, a humanity that vanished by my own actions, and I will never get it back. Never. Of all the things I have experienced, these actions are the worst that have ever happened to me. I love animals, but every time I see a dog or find myself looking at a cute dog, a stone forms in my heart. I don’t feel like I deserve to be happy. I feel selfish even trying to move on. A part of me desperately wants to forget it. I look at other people who have never harmed anyone and think how blessed they are without knowing it. I feel like a horrible person.
I am unsure if I should tell my boyfriend. I feel like he has the right to know the kind of person he is with, even tho I am not like this anymore at all. Should I tell him? I have lost all my aggression today after many years of therapy. I had apparently developed a severe psychosis that lasted for several years. I also stopped hearing voices and the paranoia vanished completely. My psychosis also led to intense social anxiety, and today I constantly fear hurting others, that I will lose all control over my body and harm others. I no longer trust myself or my body. In a way, I understand why my parents never admitted what they had done because it is unbearable to live with. Knowing you have forever tainted the world with your actions and that there is nothing you can do to take it back.
No matter how good I am today and how many good deeds I do, I will never be able to take it back. It has become my legacy and my eternal curse.
Thank you for taking the time to read this

If you're a cryptocurrency enthusiast, you've probably encountered the whimsical world of meme coins. These playful and satirical tokens, often created for entertainment, can sometimes gain unexpected popularity. Now, imagine getting in on the ground floor of the next big meme coin sensation—EggOnDog. This new contender in the meme coin arena is making waves on the Solana blockchain, and it's an opportunity you won't want to miss.

The Appeal of Meme Coins

Meme coins are a unique subset of cryptocurrencies that originate from jokes or internet memes, created by communities seeking to add humor to the often serious and hype-driven realm of crypto trading. Although they might start as a joke, some meme coins, like Dogecoin, have achieved remarkable popularity. Meme coins are not only about humor; they're also about community spirit and occasionally surprising market value.

Introducing EggOnDog

EggOnDog is the latest meme coin to capture the crypto community's attention, standing out with its uniquely playful approach. Built on the Solana blockchain, EggOnDog is more than just another meme coin; it's a project designed to satirize the frenzy and absurd hype surrounding new tokens and coins. The choice of the Solana blockchain is strategic for EggOnDog. Solana is renowned for its high-speed transactions and low fees, making it an attractive alternative to the often congested Ethereum network. By utilizing Solana, EggOnDog ensures its transactions are swift and cost-effective, which is essential for any cryptocurrency aiming to gain traction.

Why Invest in EggOnDog?

EggOnDog isn't merely a coin; it's a commentary. By embracing the absurdity of some of the hype cycles in the crypto world, it serves as a humorous reminder that not everything in the crypto market should be taken at face value. EggOnDog symbolizes the bizarre reality where something seemingly nonsensical can become valuable, highlighting the unpredictable nature of the market. At its core, EggOnDog is about more than just poking fun—it’s about fostering a community. Like other successful meme coins, its real value lies in the culture and camaraderie it cultivates among its holders. It unites people who appreciate the joke and enjoy being part of something that doesn’t take itself too seriously.

The Potential of EggOnDog

Will EggOnDog become the next big thing? It's hard to predict. The cryptocurrency market is notoriously volatile, and meme coins are even more unpredictable. However, the project's unique angle and the robust capabilities of the Solana blockchain give it a fighting chance. With high-speed transactions and low fees, EggOnDog is well-positioned to attract a broad audience and potentially grow in value.

Join the EggOnDog Movement

In summary, EggOnDog is more than just a new meme coin—it’s a social experiment and a humorous critique of the crypto market's eccentricities. Whether it's a fleeting joke or the next big meme sensation, one thing is certain: EggOnDog has made its mark on the Solana blockchain. 2024.06.09 14:55 throwaway4fem A simp to Ashley and her family [Chapter 4]

A brand new chapter! And this time we get to meet a member of Davey's family. I hope it doesn't end up being to humiliating for anyone......
Visit my mother? At work? In a fever dream I barely remembered getting into the car with the Smith family. We made the short drive across town and pulled up outside “Hoots”. The neon sign flickered, which mimicked a crude depiction of female breasts. The place always made me feel uncomfortable. When we walked in, I suddenly thought otherwise. It wasn’t really as scummy as I remember I guess. Most of the 20-something waitresses had on quite short shorts still, and revealing tops, but nothing overly obscene. I looked over at the Smiths and they seemed to be taking it all in stride, giggling at everything. Maybe this wouldn’t be so bad. Mr. Smith seemed unphased as he talked to the gorgeous hostess. She seemed to beam at his good looks and confident smile. “Miriam’s section, please” he said. The hostess twirled her hair and looked up dreamily at him. “Right this way, sir.”
Mr. and Mrs. Smith sat on 1 side of the booth, as I sat in between Ashley and Liz. As the family got used to the the somewhat promiscuously dressed 20 year olds, Mrs. Smith finally pointed my mother out. “Oh, that’s her there! Right Davey!?"
We all looked over where she pointed. My mother stood holding a small stack of dirty plates. Her uniform was the same as the other girls, but different. In addition to being the only woman there over 30, her outfit was shorter somehow. Trashier. It only emphasized that she was aging out of her 40’s and no longer maintained her youth the same as the rest of the staff. The table of gruff men she was talking to seemed to laugh at her while also stealing little rubs and grabs of her upper thigh, hips and even swatted her protruding backside. She tried to keep the grabby hands at bay with a pleading smile plastered across her face.
She set the plates down in the kitchen in the back, then hurried back over and returned as the men were just leaving. They threw couple bucks down, but missed the table as the crumpled dollars fell to the floor. As she got down on her knees to retrieve the dollars off the sticky floor, I heard Liz snort/laugh again and muttered out “jesus…I guess it’s genetic, huh Davey?”. Mrs. Smith called over “Miriam! Hello dear! We’re ready for orders when you're done down there.”
My mother scurried over as she wiped her hands on her tiny apron. “Mrs. Smith! Such a pleasure to see you here! And you brought the whole family! It has been so long since the PTA meeting. Such a, well, such a pleasant surprise. You look amazing!”
“Why thank you Miriam. I’ll tell my botox lady you think so!” she responded with a laugh. "And look who we brought here…” she gestured over to me. I looked up briefly “Um, uh, h-hi mom”.
“David! I, um, I wasn’t expecting you.” It was as if she was suddenly aware of how exposed she was.
“Look at this, Hank!”, Mrs. Smith said grabbing her husband’s attention, “this is what I was talking about. How is a woman supposed to have any self respect traipsing around in this!” Mrs. Smith found her sense of justice again. “Look at her! At her age, showing this much! How embarrassing!”
My mother as if on cue, turned a deep shade of red. I thought about sticking up for her. But what could I ever say. Maybe if I waited patiently, Ashley would maybe speak up for me. I had picked up a habit of hiding behind Ashley and waiting for her opinion. She always seemed to know just what to say!
Mr. Smith leaned forward with a grin, but spoke with sympathy dripping from his voice. “Yes, it’s just terrible. The other girls seem to be more, well, dignified in their attire though…”
“Yes,” my mother meekly replied back, “well, the other girls fit into the size small and maybe a few medium. I have to wear the large size, and well, they're from before they updated the store policy and implemented less-revealing uniforms. I put in my request for a “large" in the new uniforms though! My manager says it’s on backorder!”
Mr. Smith smiled wide at her “Well that’s fantastic then. Honestly, those shorts still look a little tight, but I’m sure that’s not bad for business”.
"It’s just disgusting is what it is!” Mrs. Smith continued. Look here,” she reached up grabbing my mother’s uniform strap and tugging it making my mother’s chest rise and fall with a jiggle "No support at all. She looks like she belongs in some seedy brothel; not a restaurant. I get the joke is it’s supposed to be a little crude in humor, but just look at this!” She pulled the strap a few more times causing her chest to shake heavily as the table let out a brief laugh. I shifted my eyes to the ground. Mrs. Smith then blatantly grabbed the waistband of my mother's tight fitting bright spandex shorts. "Ugh, and these are so tight still. You really should request an 'Extra Large', dear. I don’t think these are meant for 45 year old women…”
I wanted so desperately for my mother to stand up for herself. But all that came out of her mouth was "Y-yes well, hopefully when the, uh, the new uniform comes in, I can-”
“Turn around Miriam” Mrs. Smith said stopping my mom in her tracks. “I want to see the back…”
There was a brief moment of hesitation in my mother. I thought this would be where she stood her ground. But then she momentarily locked eyes with Mrs. Smith, who just returned an expectant look.
“Y-yes Mrs. Smith” my mother half said in a question, half not wanting to disobey a customer. She slowly turned around, revealing her unnecessarily “on display” backside tucked into bright colored booty shorts.
“Ugh, these shorts! She looks like some truck station hooker, Hank! Can’t you speak to someone from your golf club about this!”
Just then a pretty, early 20’s, blonde marched over. I was relieved to see this angel come to put us out of our misery. Perhaps she might even talk to Mrs. Smith about touching staff like that!
“Miriam! I said I needed my last table bussed 5 min ago! Get your head out of your tits and stop bothering the customers. Just take their order and get out of the way!” she barely broke stride as she confidently passed. My mother quickly got very nervous and called back “Y-yes Miss Hawkins! R-Right away!”
The smiths all seemed to gleam at my mother as she now nervously fidgeted in place. “S-sorry about that. Miss Hawkins is my new manager. She um, she has a tendency to not allow me to keep my tips if I screw up too much on shift."
"Well I think it’s great you have such a strong leader here, Miriam” Mr. Smith responded. "You can learn a lot from her!”
“Oh I absolutely agree, dear!” Mrs. Smith joined in, “someone like you and our sweet davey here can really flourish under a strong leader. I’ve always said, ’no such thing as a stupid dog. They just need the right owner to train them’. Isn’t that right, Davey?”
I looked up from my shoes for the 1st time and stuttered out my agreeance. “Y-yes Ma’am, um, Mrs. Smith, Ma’am. A d-dog is nothing w-without a strong owner, M-Ma’am." I don’t know why, but I quickly looked back at Ashley to make sure I said the right thing. Her warm smile and approving head shake made my nerves ease slightly.
“Y-yes, well, can I get you anything?", my mother asked. “I really should go clean Miss Hawkins' table before she gets upset with me again."
“We won’t keep you Miriam. We actually stopped by to see if we can ask you if Davey here can join us for our beach trip.”
My mother was barely listening now. Apparently urgent to bus her manager’s old table before getting reprimanded again. While looking over her shoulder “W-what? You want David to…? Wh-where again? Oh, uh, Y-yes, that’s fine whatever you think is best, Mrs. Smith!”
“Oh perfect! We’ll make sure he stays plenty active! Lots to be done! Oh, and we’ll start with a round of sodas, Miriam. Oh, and the chips and guac!”
“Y-yes Mrs Smith. Right away!”
For whatever reason, I felt a pang of dejection and humiliation. My mother barely asked any follow-up questions. Instead she was nervous about being in trouble with “Miss Hawkins” again, who looked like she was barely out of high school herself, and already had my mother dressed like a joke and trembling at her commands. And the way Mr. and Mrs. Smith talked to my mother! Then I felt Ashley’s leg brush up against mine as she giggled along to whatever story Mr. Smith now told the table as the rest laughed along in amusement. In my humiliation, I suddenly felt grounded. I now get a romantic beach trip with Ashley!
The rest of the meal felt like an out of body experience. I was mostly ignored as the family enjoyed their meal. The Smith family ate their food, as I tried to laugh along as if I was in on their private jokes. I picked at my side salad, no dressing. I wanted a burger like Liz and her father had ordered, but Ashley doesn’t like when I eat any foods she thinks are too fatty or might make me too full. She says it makes me “less eager to please”.
Liz made several comments about how good her burger was. It made my stomach loudly grumble, which she smirked at. As we were walking out Mrs. Smith point out my mother by the side door. She was talking with “Miss Hawkins” again. She suggested I go say goodbye to my mother as the rest of the Smiths made their way outside. I didn’t want to interrupt my mother’s conversation and hoped to save us both some humiliation, but Ashley jumped at the chance, thinking it was a great idea. She grabbed my hand and confidently pulled me forward. I resisted ever so slightly at 1st before she gave a slight pull and I looked down as my eyes caught site of her firm buttucks rolling back and forth in her black yoga pants. My thoughts felt cloudy and suddenly my mind seemed to glaze over. It suddenly felt really, really good to follow her. As we walked up I heard the conversation between my mom and the probably 21 year old manager. Miss Hawkins stood with her arms crossed as stared down my mother, who stood before her with her eyes cast firmly on the ground as she nervously shifted her feet.
“Well, what did I tell you about cleaning my tables the SECOND they get up to leave?” Miss Hawkins asked aggressively.
“I-i’m sorry Miss Hawkins, I tried but I-“
“Do I look like I’m interested in your dumb excuses, Miriam. Let’s go. That’s another demerit. Hand it over…” Miss Hawkins said with her hand on her hip, and the other outstretched. She had a hard, expectant look on her face, daring my mother challenge her.
I watched my mother take the few dollars she clung to and slowly put them in the bratty blonde’s hand. I was glad my mom kept her eyes on the ground. It was probably best she didnt have to see the smirk that crept across her tormentor’s perfectly glossy lips.
“OH EM GEE, April!?” Ashley said as we walked up.
Miss Hawkins turned to us and after a breif second said “Ashley!? Holy shit. From high school volleyball? What are you a senior now? You look great hun!” It was odd seeing her bratty and entitled attitude immediately switch to bubbly smiles.
“Oh please, I look like a wreck compared to you. You work here?”
“Yea, I started during my freshman year of college to help pay the bills. I graduate next year though and then it’s bye bye Hoots! It’s not so bad here though. The tips are great.” “That’s awesome. And I see you took this one under your wing? Hi again, Miriam!”
My mother briefly took her eyes off the ground. “Oh, uh, h-hello Miss Smi-“
“You know this little charity case?” April said cutting my mother off.
Ashley giggled and replied she was actually my mother. That’s when April Hawkins looked in my direction for the 1st time. I could feel the heat from her eyes on me. I nervously looked down at the floor and shifted my feet. A trait I suppose I learned. Ashley and April were clearly in full control of this conversation.
“I see the resemblance. Well, everyone just loves our little charity case, don’t we, Miriam?
“Y-yes Miss Hawkins”. I hated seeing my mother refer to this 20 year old ‘Miss Hawkins’ with an honorific while she was just ‘Miriam'. Miss Hawkins was certainly pretty though, she exhumed confidence, and stood with perfect posture, forcing her chest out attractively in her snug white shirt. I liked the way her full lips glittered and shined. I cursed myself for feeling my underwear get tight when I looked at her.
“That’s right, she cleans out tables when the busboys take a break, she works any shifts the girls don’t want, and she’s the only girl that volunteers to split her tips with the other girls. So we get to split basically everything she makes. She can so generous, sometimes she just needs a little ‘push’” April winked at Ashley. "I guess it helps her feel like less of a burden around the young ‘pretty’ girls.”
“Oh well that sounds JUST like my Davey! So sweet and ready to just give, give, give!”
“I could totally tell he was the type. They are such givers these two! And you should feel lucky Davey, not everyone gets to find such a pretty ‘taker’, you know” Miss Hawkins said with a laugh.
“Oh you’re gonna make me blush, April!” Ashley laughed, brushing a loose strand of hair behind her ear. “Plus if she’s anything like my Davey”, she said gesturing toward my mother, "I’m sure she works like, so super hard to please you!”
“Oh for sure! Old Miriam here is really a cash cow. The older crowd of guys love still being able to get a quick grab or feel as she serves them, and they don’t have to worry about any reporting or repercussions with her. Not that they’d try that bullshit with me or one of the other girls!”
Ashley smiled on “Don’t I know it, girl. You wouldn’t take that shit from anyone!”
“Got that right! But I’m not gonna report it for little old Miriam here, so the creepers and old perverts usually through a few extra dollars her way. Which ends up rightttt insideee my pockets, ain’t that right Miriam?” My mother nodded along as she gave up any attempt at looking from the floor.
“Well, this has been, like, SO fun!” Ashley gushed. “Just wanted Davey to say hi to mommy”
“Yea, we should party sometime. Okay, fun’s over Miriam. Grab the trash from the back and throw it in the dumpster.” My mother spoke with her head slightly raised, wringing her hands nervously “Oh, um, please Miss Hawkins maybe I could say goodbye to my son in priva-“
“Trash. Now!” Miss Haskins returned to her normal tone when speaking with my mother.
"Y-yess miss h-h-hawkins!” Just like that she scurried away without saying goodbye. I didn’t blame her at all though, and didn’t find myself feeling angry. I think in that moment, she genuinely forgot I was there. She was just trying to be good for her superior, that’s all!
Ashley waved goodbye as she started to walk off. “See ya, April! Davey, come!” I looked up from the floor to look at April Hawkins one last time and saw her eyeing me up and down like a piece of meat. Like she knew something I didn’t. I quickly turned and scurried to keep up with Ashley who was several steps ahead. When I caught up, Ashley spoke as if to no one in particular. “Isn’t April cool? And she’s such a boss. Always has been! And did you hear the way she spoke to Miriam!? ‘Trash. NOW’ hahaha, such a queen! I like, totally gotta try that. ‘Davey, Trash. Now!’ ” I squirmed as she giggled at her own joke. She confidently strutted off, and I followed behind.

2024.06.09 14:46 ExplodingPoptarts What are the non-superhero graphic novels from the current century(the year 2001 and beyond) do you consider 101?

Watchmen is great and all, and so is All-Star Superman but what do you consider the essential books that aren't over a few decades old and aren't in a superhero universe? The topic I made half a month ago, almost everything that was mentioned that had over 20 upvotes was superhero stuff.
Something is Killing The Children probably belongs on this list for example. Same thing The Walking Dead, Saga, Paper Girls, The Sword by The Luna Brothers, Monstress, Stray Dogs, and Department of Truth.
Maybe Criminal by Ed Brubaker, My Friend Dahmer by Derk Backderf, They Called Me Enemy by George Takai, TMNT: Ronin by Kevin Eastman, Hip Hop Family Tree, Nimona, Sex Crminals, The Wicked And The Divine, Bone, and Y The Last Man belong here too
There's probably some really great Manga as well that belongs on this list as well, although I can't think of anything off of the top of my head.

2024.06.09 14:43 Alexis5899 I need your help/opinion/experience. (Ayuda)

You see, this is going to sound very contradictory, but throughout my life, I have had "paranormal" experiences. I have seen everything from shadows to deceased people making an appearance, orbs, and other things I can't explain. This has been happening to me since I was about 4 or 5 years old. I am currently 25, and from childhood until around 18, I experienced many "paranormal" situations, some more intense and disturbing than others. Although my family seems to have a history of these events, it makes me think. However, at the same time, I refuse to believe that these things have actually happened to me. But if there is something I hate more than being able to see these things, it's hearing them. Hearing them? Yes, that's what I want to address with this long introduction.
To those who believe in entities and such, have you ever heard incomprehensible whispers? Since I was 18, I hadn't had any paranormal experiences until around the age of 22-24. These recent events have affected my mental health, and while one of them might have been pure suggestion, the last one had no reason behind it.
Here's what I think was due to suggestion: my grandfather, in his last days or weeks before passing away, would tell me he saw a dog passing under the table in his house (I was taking care of him). I never paid attention to it because I knew the dogs were outside the house, and he described this dog as medium to large-sized. One afternoon, unlike before, I decided to look for this so-called dog, but unsurprisingly, I couldn't find it. Later that night, I had a dream that was vividly accurate to what was happening around me while I was dreaming. I was sitting, watching my grandfather, the TV was on a news channel, and suddenly this dog appeared. I was paralyzed and could do nothing but insult and try to scare it away. The dog bit my hand, and when I woke up a few seconds later, my hand felt cramped, a bit painful, numb, and tingling. Anyway, 90% of the incidents I've experienced have been at my grandfather's house (I used to sleep over from Saturdays to Sundays with him from the age of 4 or 5 until he passed away when I was 22).
When I was 16/17, I saw a very ugly woman looking at me menacingly through the glass of my door. I got scared and covered my head, and then I felt someone climb on top of me, preventing me from removing the covers. Since that day, I have never covered my head again. At 18, I worked at a 4-star spa hotel in a rural area where wealthy people would go to relax. On my first night, I was given a car to transport items needed by other employees, whether it was cleaning supplies or for the chefs. I also had to set the alarm for the event rooms. On my third day, around 9 PM, I was heading to an event room to deliver items because there was an event the next day. As I arrived with the cart (the event rooms had panoramic views, meaning the walls were made of glass), I saw a lady about 70-80 years old looking out from inside. I walked halfway through the room, greeted her as I passed the door, but got no response. The next day, the same thing happened. Only this time, when I turned around, the lady was no longer there, and I thought I was going crazy. Over time, I would be in places where the lights would turn on by themselves, I would feel scared to be alone, sometimes music would start playing on its own in other rooms, or I would hear noises in the kitchens. And this always happened when I was alone. On my last day of work, I told this entity, who other employees said was the owner's mother named Berta, "Well, this is the last time we see each other, but you won't be able to scare me anymore." Immediately after, I closed a metal hatch, and after taking a few steps, I heard a terrible noise as if someone had hit that metal door. Obviously, I was scared out of my mind, but I kept repeating to myself, "She can't win," and walked away slowly.

Now, in my new job, things have also happened... I work in a flour mill. One night, I finished my shift and had to stay for the next day. The power went out around 11 PM and didn't come back until 3 AM, at which point I went to take a shower. After a few minutes, I started hearing murmurs behind me that I couldn't understand. I thought they were my colleagues, but they weren't. Among these 3 or 4 voices, there was a female one, and that's when I realized I was actually alone. There are no women at my workplace, especially not at 3 AM. I let it go, thinking I was tired, but a few weeks later, around 7 or 8 PM, while I was using the bathroom, I heard these voices again inside my noise-canceling headphones. They are always incomprehensible, indecipherable whispers. Occasionally, a female voice calls my name.

...................................... ......................................

2024.06.09 14:20 BETWEEnCHAOSundORDER THINKPAD T14 OR T480

THINKPAD T14 OR T480
When I say t 14 I mean the 10th gen Intel i5 and on the thinkpad t480 side it is i5 8th generation quad core processor . Since I am a student who will be watching a lot of YouTube videos at 1080p all let's say higher resolution for extended period of time . I will be considering the full HD option .
I have used a thinkpad t490 which belong to my friend the other night and I have fallen in love with the thinkpad laptops because I felt them to be extremely durable and strong felt like a premium laptop.
When I helped them in my hand from the corner I could see that there was no flex in the entire chassis of the keyboard . As compared to my other friends Dell laptop which had too much flex when I was holding it from the corner side .
I am a broke student and I do not have a lot of money to buy a laptop and the consideration of buying a refurbished thinkpad t14 is to make sure that I will be able to get a 10th generation Intel processor which my or may not last me another 4 to 5 years of heavy browsing and music listening sessions .
I would like to address the fact that I have made another query in other to understand about the t480 in the thinkpad subreddit. Now I have my eyes on the thinkpad t14 laptop which has better processor but not that much now I have my eyes on the thinkpad t14 laptop which has better processor but not level of customisation that the t480 provides in the first place..
Since I am from India and we have everything expensive here . This is the price which is going on at the current moment for this refurbished laptop the race the t14 .
This refurbished laptop will set me back by around 580 to 600 dollars let's say .
Is this laptop much better than the t480 it in terms of performance in terms of the way the screen looks in terms of Audio output and in terms of keyboard usage

The reason we are providing you with some mechanics in the game is that we wish for you to critique it as you see fit. Many designs are still in process and we're (still) going through the debate about how some of the characters could look, so we apologize for the lack of visual evidence. One major question that we see fit to ask is: What features would you like to see in the companion (Shadow) mechanics to make them more useful and emotionally engaging? (due to Shadow being considered a "main character" and players will be seeing and interacting with him a lot). If you wish for more detail on certain key details, Amara, or even minor details, feel free to ask. :)

2024.06.09 13:59 Rough-Confidence-938 [PC] [2000?] cyborg, scifi, pre-rendered 3D?, point-and-click?

Platform(s): PC
Genre: scifi, maybe point-and-click but I'm not sure
Estimated year of release: 2000
Graphics/art style: 3D, trying to be realistic, I think pre-rendered or with many cinematics, because the quality was above what hardware would allow at that time.
Notable characters: I think you are a cyborg
Notable gameplay mechanics: actions affect history, puzzles?
Other details: I remember the game starts with a cinematic: you're in a small spaceship flying over the ocean, in a sunny day, until you land in a base (I think still in the middle of the ocean). There you find a woman and she attempts to kiss you and then go away. You can avoid the kiss by pressing a key in the keyboard. I had to play many times until I discovered you could avoid it, because that scene is a cinematic and I assumed you couldn't control the protagonist in a cinematic. If you allow the kiss, the man that controls the base sees it through a camera and get jealous. I think he tries to kill you, but I can't remember how. I think the game was made of puzzles, because I couldn't advance more then a few rooms.

2024.06.09 13:58 shiitescalendar martyrdom of imam al jawad a.s

The Characteristics Of Al-Mu’tasim
Foolishness
Al-Mu’tasim was foolish. Historians described him that when he became angry, he did not care whom he killed or what he did.
Dislike Of Knowledge
Al-Mu’tasim disliked knowledge and hated learned people. There was a servant with him who read with him in the book. The servant died and ar-Rasheed said to al-Mu'tasim, ‘O Muhammad, your servant died.’ Al-Mu'tasim said, ‘O yes, my master! He died and rested from the book.’ Ar-Rasheed said, ‘The book will rest from you. (to his men) Leave him! Do not teach him!’ Al-Mu'tasim remained illiterate. When he became the caliph, he did not know reading and writing and his vizier was unlearned. Ahmed bin Aamir described him by saying, ‘An illiterate caliph and an unlearned vizier.’3 He was divested of knowledge, virtue, and any good quality, by which he was supposed to deserve the caliphate in Islam that was the highest and most important position on which justice and equity among people depended. Al-Mu'tasim’s heart was full of spite and malice against Imam al- Jawad (a.s). He burst with rage whenever he heard the virtues and exploits of Imam al-Jawad (a.s) being mentioned. His envy towards him had led him to assassinate him as we shall explain later on.
Bringing Imam Al-Jawad To Baghdad
Al-Mu'tasim had ordered Imam al-Jawad (a.s) to come to Baghdad and he arrived in it in Muharram, 220 AH.9 When Imam al-Jawad (a.s) came to Baghdad, al-Mu'tasim house- arrested him to know all his affairs and activities. He ordered his men to watch him and he prevented him from connecting with his followers and those who believed in his imamate. Mu'tasim ordered Umm al-Fadhl to poison the Imam, and her brother Ja'far ibn Ma'mun, the accursed one, also helped and provoked her. she poisonedn bunch of grapes, and placed it in front of him. When the Imam had eaten from it, she regretted and went on to cry. He-asws said: ‘What makes you cry? By Allah-azwj! May Allah-azwj Strike you with sterility not to be restored, and affliction which cannot be veiled!’ She died in an illness, a hole appeared in the most covered of places of her body parts (private part). She spent her wealth and entirety of what she had owned, upon that illness, to the extent that she became needy to be nourished. And it is reported that the hole was in her private part. The accursed Umm al-Fadhl also contracted leprosy and descended into Hell in disgrace in the desert, and the dogs tore her body apart.
hemlock poison, whose characteristic was that it made the blessed feet of the Imam so heavy that he could no longer walk, and it made the Imam extremely thirsty, such that like his forefather Imam al Husayn a.s he said: 'Al-Atash, al-Atash' (The thirst, the thirst)... The wicked Umm al-Fadhl ordered the maids to beat drums and tambourines and dance so that his voice would not reach anyone's ears. Finally, Imam Jawad, peace be upon him, was martyred in loneliness on the dirt of his room while in exile. For three days, his blessed body remained on the rooftop of the house, and after that, Umm al-Fadhl threw the pure body down from the roof to the ground. The Shias took the blessed corpse and buried it on the 2nd of Dhu al-Hijjah in the presence of Imam al Hadi, peace be upon him.
‘When allegiance was pledged to Al-Mutasim, he went on to check his situation. He wrote to Abdul Malik Al-Zayyat to dispatch to him Al-Taqi-asws and Umm Fazl. Al-Zayyat dispatched Ali Bin Yaqteen to him-asws. He-asws prepared and went out to Baghdad. He honoured him-asws, and revered him-asws, and sent Ashnas bearing the gifts to him-asws and to Umm Al-Fazl Then he sent a drink of citron juice to him-asws under his seal upon the hands of Ashnas. He said, ‘Commander of the faithful has got Ahmad Bin Abu Dawood, and Saeed Bin Al-Khaeyb, and a group from the well-known people to taste it, and he orders you-asws to drink from it with the water of snow, and he has made it just now, and he says, ‘Drink it at night’. He-asws said: ‘It is beneficial (when) cold, and the snow has melted’. And he insisted upon that, so he-asws drank it knowing of their deeds. (The book) ‘Al Manaqib’ of Ibn Shehr Ashub –V4 p 416

Cause of Imam’s martyrdom
It is mentioned in Tafsir Ayyashi that a man named Zarqan was a close friend of Qadi Ibne Abi Dawud. He narrates: One day when Qadi Ibne Abi Dawud came to me, he was highly distraught. I asked him what the matter was and he told me in a plaintive tone, “Alas! If I had only passed away twenty years ago instead of being humiliated!” When I asked him to explain, he said, “Today, Abu Ja’far Muhammad Ibne Ali humiliated me in the presence of the chief of believers, Mutasim.” “What happened exactly?” I asked. “A thief came to the chief of believers and said: I am a thief. Please issue the Islamic penalty to me and purify from my sin.” Mutasim summoned all the jurists including Abu Ja’far Muhammad Taqi and asked us from where the hand should be chopped. I told him from the wrist. When the Caliph asked me for the proof, I said that the Quran has mentioned cutting off the hand of the thief and the word of ‘yad’ implies the hand from the wrist as mentioned in the verse of Tayammum: “…then wipe your faces and your hands…”Surah Nisa 4:43 And the whole nation has consensus that here the word of ‘yad’ implies the hand from the wrist. So it similarly applies for the thief as well and his hand must be cut from the wrist. For some time there was dispute among the jurists with regard to my verdict and some suggested that his hand should be cut off from the elbow relying on the verse of ablution: “…and your hands as far as the elbows…”Surah Maidah 5:6 After that Caliph Mutasim glanced at Imam Muhammad Taqi (a) and said, “Abu Ja’far, what is your opinion regarding this issue?” “The jurists of the community have mentioned their views; now what is the need of my opinion?” Inspite of his reluctance, the Caliphate insisted. He said, “If you are insisting so much; then listen: all the jurists have erred and issued a verdict that is opposed to the Sunnah. The Islamic legal penalty for the thief is that his four fingers must be cut off from the root leaving his palm intact.” “What is your reasoning for that? Mutasim asked. “It is the statement of Messenger of Allah (s) that during prostration (Sajdah) comprises placing the following seven parts of the body on the floor: forehead, both hands, both knees and toes of both feet. If the hand is amputed from the wrist how that person would perform Sajdah? Whereas Almighty Allah has mentioned in Surah Jinn: “And the places of prostration are Allah’s…”Surah Jinn 72:18 It implies the parts placed in Sajdah. “…therefore call not upon any one with Allah.”Surah Jinn 72:18 That is along with those places of prostration do not include anyone else with Allah. Hence whatever comes into the ownership of Allah cannot be cut off.” Mutasim was highly impressed at this reasoning and he ruled that the fingers of that thief be cut off. I was shattered by this verdict and I wished that I had died before issuing such a judgment and facing such humiliation. Zarqan says: That same Qadi visited Mutasim after two days and said: I am here because of my concern for you and I also know that as a result of that my abode shall in Hell. “What do you mean?” asked Mutasim. Qadi said, “O chief of believers, when you gather the scholars and jurists in your court and inquire about their legal verdicts, at that time not only scholars are present, on the contrary, your family members, ministers and your scribes etc are also present and later on these reports are circulated all over the country. But last time you really did something extraordinary! Ignoring the views of all the scholars and jurists of the Ummah, you adopted the verdict of Abu Ja’far. Whereas you should have taken into consideration the fact that from before also a large number of people from the nation believe in his Imamate and they imagine that you have usurped power that was rightfully Abu Ja’far’s. In spite of that you overlooked the verdicts of all the jurists and applied his opinion. This would weaken the foundations of your rule.” Mutasim’s became terribly infuriated and he said, “You have rendered a good advice; may God give you a good reward.” After that the Caliph ordered his minister to invite Abu Ja’far for dinner and poison the food. So that minister invited the Imam for dinner, but the Imam excused himself. The minister said, “We have only invited you for dinner, so that your presence would bring auspiciousness from God and so and so ministers of the Caliph would also like to meet you.” Finally the Imam attended the dinner and then realized that the food was poisoned. He asked them for the mount in order to return, but the host said, “Why the haste? Please stay some more.” Imam said, “It is better that I leave your place and go home.” After that he was in severe pain for a day and then finally passed away Tafsir Ayyashi, Vol. 1, Pg. 319; Biharul Anwar, Vol. 50, Pg. 5.

  1. Ahmad ibn Idris has narrated from from Muhammad ibn Hassa’n from abu Hashim Ali-Ja‘fari who has said the following. “Once I prayed with abu Ja‘far (a.s.) in the Mosque of Ali-Musayyib. He lead the prayer with us and as to the direction of Makka he stood up facing straight. He also has said that a berry tree that was in the Mosque had dried up and had no leaves. The Imam (a.s.) asked for water and prepared himself under that tree for prayer. The berry tree came alive with leaves and fruits in that year.”

. Al-Husayn ibn Muhammad has narrated from Mu‘alla ibn Muhammad from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Abdallah from Muhammad ibn Sinan who has said the following. “Once I went to see abu al-Hassan (a.s.). He said, “O Muhammad, has something happened to the family of al-Faraj (the governor of al-Madina )?” I said, “Yes, ‘Umar (a member of al-Faraj family) has died.” The Imam (a.s.) said, “All thanks and praise belongs to Allah.” He said it twenty four times. I then said, “My master, had known it would make you this happy I would have come to running and bare foot with the news (to congratulate you).” The Imam (a.s.) said, “Do you not know what he –may Allah condemn him- once had said to Muhammad ibn Ali, my father?” The narrator has said that I said, “No, I do not know it.” The Imam (a.s.) said, “He spoke to my father about an issue and then said to him, “I think you are drunk.” My father then had said, “O Lord, if you know that I have been fasting this day, then make him test the taste of al-A ‘war, and the humiliation of captivity.” By Allah, in just a few days his belongings were looted and he was captured and know he is dead-may Allah deprive him of His mercy. Allah, the Most Majestic, the Most gracious, has exacted revenge from him and He continues to exact revenge for His friends from His enemies.

  1. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father who has said the following. “Once a group of Shi‘a from the suburbs asked permission to meet abu Ja‘far (a.s.). He granted them permission and they came in his presence. In one meeting they asked him thirty thousand questions. He answered them all and at that time he was ten years old.”

  1. Ali ibn Muhammad has narrated from Sahl ibn zd from Dawud ibn al-Qasim al-Ja‘fari who has said the following “Once I went to see abu Ja‘far (a.s.) and I had a few questions on three pieces of materials with proper markings and they were mixed as such that I could not distinguish. I felt sad. He picked one and said, “This is the letter of Ziyad ibn Shabib.” Then he picked up the other one and said, “.This is the letter of so and so.” I became awe struck. He looked at me and smiled.” The narrator has said that the Imam (a.s.) then gave me three hundred Dinars and asked me to deliver them to the certain persons of the sons of his uncle and said, “He will ask you to show him a professional person who would help him to buy goods, help show him one.” The narrator has said that I then went to him and gave him the Dinars and asked me, “O abu Hashim, can you show me a professional person who would help me to buy goods.” I said, “Yes, I can do so.” The narrator has said that a camel man asked me to speak on his behalf to abu Ja‘far (a.s.) to take part in certain matters of his affairs. I went to see him (abu Ja‘far (a.s.) to speak to him but he was having meal with a group of people and I did not get a chance to speak to him. He (abu Ja‘far (a.s.) said, “O abu Hashim, eat. He placed food before me. Then he said, initiating and without any question from me, “O slave, take good care of the camel-man that abu Hashim has brought for us. Keep him with you.” The narrator has said that one day I entered a garden along with him and said, “May Allah take my soul in service for your cause, I am addicted to eating fig. Pray to Allah for me.” He was quite and then after three day on his own initiation he said, “O abu Hashim, “Allah has removed your addiction.” Ever since it is the thing that I hate most.”

  1. Ali ibn Muhammad has narrated from certain persons of our people from Muhammad ibn al-Rayyan who has said the following “Al-Ma’mun did all he could to prove that abu Ja‘far, Muhammad ibn Ali al-Rida (a.s.) was only a young man of worldly desires. However Al-Ma’mun could not succeed. When he became frustrated he gave his daughter in marriage to abu Ja‘far, Muhammad ibn Ali al-Rida (a.s.). For the ceremony he sent two hundred most beautiful entertaining girls each with a bowl in her hand with a precious pearl in it to well come abu Ja‘far, Muhammad ibn Ali al-Rida (a.s.) when he would sit on the special seat prepared for him. They, however, were not of any attraction to the Imam (a.s.) to disturb him. There was a man called Mukhariq who had a voice, musical skills, a guitar and a tall beard. Al-Ma’mun called him and he said, “O Amir al-Mu’minin, if he is a worldly man I will prove myself as dealing him deadly blows on your behalf.” He sat in front of abu Ja‘far, Muhammad ibn Ali al-Rida (a.s.) and began to bray a hee-haw that made all the people of the house gather around him. He began to play his guitar and sing. He did it for an hour but abu Ja‘far (a.s.) did not pay any attention to the right or left. Then he (a.s.) raised his head and said, “O you, tall bearded one, be pious before Allah.” The narrator has said that the musical instrument and guitar fell off his hand and he could not use his hands thereafter until he died. When Al-Ma’mun asked him about his condition he said, “When abu Ja‘far (a.s.) expressed his disappointment at me it struck me with a huge degree of fear from which I have not been able to relieve myself ever since.”

  1. Al-Husayn ibn Muhammad has narrated from Mu‘alla ibn Muhammad from Muhammad ibn Jumhur from Mu‘mmar ibn Khallad who has said the following. “I heard ’Isma‘il ibn Ibrahim say to al-rida (a.s.), ‘My son feels heaviness in his tongue. I intend to sent him tomorrow to you. Pass you your hand over his head and pray for him. He is your Mawla (slave).’” The Imam (a.s.) said, “He is a Mawla (slave) of abu Ja’far (a.s.). send him tomorrow to him (abu Ja‘far (a.s.).”

One of our people has narrated from Muhammad ibn Ali from Mu‘awiya ibn Hakim from ibn abu Basir who has said the following. “Al-Najashi once asked me, “Who will be the Imam after your master? I wish you ask him so I will know.” I then went to see Ali al-Rida (a.s.) and informed him (of al-Najashi’s wish).” The narrator has said that the Imam said, “The Imam will be my son.” Then he said, “Can any one say that my son will be the Imam when he has no son?”

When he was about to be taken to al-Mu‘tasam (179/795 —became caliph 218/833 — 227/841), for the second time I went to him and said, “May Allah take my souls in service for your cause. You are leaving. To who, after you, will go this task Leadership with Divine Authority)?” He wept until his beard become soaked. 2024.06.09 13:49 LastEconomist7221 On American Education. Writing out a thought

Hola, I’ve been pondering an idea every now and then about Americas education system. And the more I see it happen, the more I worry.
I’ll start by laying it out as another field and Circle back.
Big American Football fan here. Follow me. From the beginning of one’s football career to the end. The end being Professional (This also will exist in a bubble in the pros), You will constantly work your way through a filter. This filter is basically separating the dogshit athletes from the good, the good to the great, then the great to the best, and then eventually your personality and coachability.
So one by one, step by step, these athletes fall to the wayside, careers ending before the next best. Until you get to the end. But in this case we’re not focusing on the end. I’m focusing on that shitty JUCO linebacker who retired his sophomore year to concussions or something dumb. Where the fuck do these guys end up.
Answers vary. But when you take every step of athlete into account the likelihood of who ends up in your local amateur football league playing for gas money or a gym teachefootball coach. There’s a certain group along that filter where that likelihood is far above the rest.
To bring it around. As I filter through life and take my next steps, I see people not making it through, either dead, jail, or drugs. Then the ones that have already failed or yet to start a career. This group contains the least functional adults. Not all. But most of Hamasabi’s fans are in here for sure Then people in my area who are going to school, graduating, or in a profession. Then the super cool, mega dorks, or IG sluts. Which is basically all of DGG
Ask yourself which group is most likely to go be a teacher at a local middle school or elementary? I got a cousin, Barely made it through a crim justice degree, wanted to be a cop, got a DUI and now he’s going to school to be a math teacher. I mean in fairness to him he’s probably gonna be a decent teacher.
My point is, there’s a 0% chance that our Top 60% of our best and brightest are touching these jobs, especially when the pay is falling behind significantly. Fuckin exact reason why libs of tik tok has infinite content on school teachers. And these guys are playing a key role in helping mature the minds of a number of kids at a given time.
Then I worry that this isn’t new, and that this filter is or has been slowly failing, allowing our deep education systems to be more and more polluted. Which appears to be obvious but I’m still unsure.
The same can be said for almost anything. Journalism for example. But maybe the education thing I’m hitting on plays a role in that as well? Who knows.
Maybe I’ll self delete and ask hamasabis dog about it.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I wasn’t planning on updating again until after the baby was born, but a lot has happened since I last posted.
I found a very nice couple to adopt my unborn baby. They have two sons and one daughter already. My dad and lawyer did background checks and everything. They’re a nice family who want a large family. They have two biological children, but can no longer have any more, so, they want to adopt as many as they’re allowed. But unless I get their permission, that’s all I can tell you about them right now. I don’t know how much they want out there. But they said they would give their daughter any letter or note write to her once she reached fourteen or fifteen depending on when they think she’s ready and can comprehend everything.
I know a lot of people have been getting on me because I say uncle and aunt instead of aunt and uncle. I think someone even corrected me on that. I get aunt and uncle may sound better, but I say uncle first because he’s my dad’s brother and my aunt married in. If my aunt were my dad’s sister, I would say aunt first. Maybe that’s wrong, but that’s how I put it.
But getting to them. My uncle is in jail for getting drunk and then getting into a verbal fight with my dad and a physical fight with some people in public. My aunt is in a psychiatric ward after threatening suicide after I continued to deny her my unborn baby. It only got worse when she found out I found a couple.
My grandpa had a mild stroke and was temporarily placed in a different home than grandma. He sincerely apologized for saying everything he said and did, but still thinks I’m being ungrateful. Still, he said he supports my decision and won’t stop me.
My grandma apologized to dad but refused to look at me until a few days ago. She said she was sorry and that she understood that being a mother at fifteen is difficult. But that was why I should have let my uncle and aunt have my unborn baby. However, I’m going to be sixteen in two weeks, so I’ll be sixteen when my baby is born. So, seeing as I will be sixteen, I should be able to handle being a mother. Not only that, but this may be my only chance to have a baby. And that got me thinking about what if she’s right. What if this was my only chance? But I also know I’m not ready and that I would feel awful if I backed out of the adoption when I really liked the couple. So, my grandma is back to refusing to have anything to do with me.
I decided that if this was the only chance I got to be pregnant, then it’s just not meant to be. If I can’t have any babies in the future, I’ll get plenty of ice cream and maybe some more cats, dogs, hamsters, or whatever. I would love to be a mom in the future, but whatever happens, happens.
I’m just starting to become comfortable and my therapist says keeping the baby could throw everything off. But she also says it’s my choice.
I must be blind or really stupid because I didn’t realize my dad was gay (or bi) and that his best friend who is always over helping is actually his boyfriend. I didn’t know and just thought he was a very good friend. I accept them because they seem very happy together. And I believe love is love. However, I really wish I didn’t find out the way I did.
Short version: it was late at night and I got up to use the bathroom. I heard noises coming from my dad’s room that I didn’t recognize, so I went to investigate. And that’s where I’m leaving that.
My dad’s teaching assistant came over a few weeks ago and I met him. He’s very, very nice. He just turned nineteen. He knows I was attacked and that I’m putting the baby up for adoption. He also knows that certain family members are against it, but he doesn’t know any personal details. He asked me out on a date last week. Dad said fine, but it had to be supervised. My friends and their partners were supposed to go with.
The date was supposed to be Friday afternoon. However, I became sick and it only became worse as the days went by. Dad finally made me go to the ER Thursday night. I have two blood clots: a small one in my chest and a medium-sized one next to my right lung.
So, I’ve been stuck in the hospital since then. And I will be stuck here until they say the clots are manageable outside of the hospital. However, the nurses and one doctor recommended that because I am pregnant and am due soon, I should just stay in the hospital until after she is born. I don’t know how I feel about that. I don’t want to stay in the hospital any longer than I have to.
Originally I was told I was due at the end of July or beginning of August. Now they’re saying most likely July.
Please, can someone give me any advice because everyone I know is telling me to listen to the doctors.
My cats are still kittens and would destroy the cords, so they can’t be here. I feel like I’m losing my mind.
2024.06.09 13:20 guiltyofnothing “You are what is wrong with society. Again, it is advisable that you the seek the psychiatric help that you require.” /r/bingingwithbabish boils over a new paywall and a creator’s apology
The Context:
Andrew Rea is a cook, YouTuber, and author better known as Babish, famous for his cooking series Binging with Babish.
Recently, it was announced that Babish will be introducing a paywall for some new content. In addition, old websites with previously-free content were shuttered.
Babish has also come under fire for his sponsorships, with particular criticism over his promotion of the video game Hogwarts Legacy, considering the recent controversial statements from the series’ author JK Rowling.
Our drama starts as Babish himself takes to the sub to issue an apology for the rollout of the changes, attempting to justify and lay out the reasoning behind them.
While many are receptive to his explanation and find it sincere, others are not so ready to accept…
The Drama:
One user defends the criticism:
TL;DR: you're getting a lot of criticsm for your shitty business decisions, so you're playing the mental health card to turn down the heat.
Look, I'm sorry you're going through a rough patch, and I'm sorry you've gone through the things you have. But forgive me if I find it hard to shed a tear for you.
You can't expect a huge outpouring of sympathy for your mental health, and then turn around and push Betterhelp and a crypto gambling game. Those are both products that prey on your audience's mental well-being. So we're supposed to care about your mental health but you don't give a fuck about ours? Explain that one to me. As for the paywall, I don't care that much, but it's shitty that you didn't tell people it was going up beforehand.
I’m not emotionally equipped to be a public figure.
Should have thought of that before making your face the logo of your company.
Do you enjoy being an awful person?
His struggles are fairly well documented, personally, well before any of this happened
Just take 12 seconds and consider maybe this was an oversight?
It’s not like he’s fucking Brad Pitt with a team of 87 managers and PR folks. I’m sure he’s got a manager, but do you really think he’s got the same pull as an a-list actor to catch every small failure?
He’s a fucking YouTuber - a great one, in my opinion, but a YouTuber nonetheless. Humans make mistakes when they don’t have 36 people checking every ounce of their work.
Give him a little grace and maybe give everyone in your life a little. It’s not all a conspiracy, sometimes people just fuck up.
Do you enjoy not reading my comment? Yes, his mental health struggles are well documented. That's why I acknowledged them.
I'm not talking about the paywall. I'm talking about how he wants everyone to care about his mental health, but has said absolutely nothing in regards to the shitty predatory sponsors. And I'm not talking about his shitty "sorry you feel that way" post on YouTube and taking the video down. He can't just say "sorry, mental health" while ignoring the harm he's helped cause by not being selective about who he takes money from.
Oh fuck off you miserable nerd, if you don’t like how he makes money, you don’t have to participate or consume the content.
If you’re going to keep being salty about this despite an apology and a way to access the old websites then I suggest you look inward.
Read my comment again, I'm not angry about the paywall.
Sure.
Read my fucking comment again, asswipe.
[Continued:]
Did you change it?
If not, I'll pass on reading your angry rantings again. Theu weren't worth the first read through.
No, I didn't. Because I already said it's not about the paywall, dipshit.
Theu weren't worth the first read through.
Still worth it enough for you to respond and be an asshole though, I guess.
Edit: get blocked, douche.
Paywall paywall paywall.
You are obsessed.
I feel so sorry for you content creator dick riders lol
[…]
You’re acting like he owes you something. He doesn’t. We live in a different world now where companies are just faceless businesses anymore, and a lot of the things we consume are the product of single people or small teams. As a result, individual proclivities and issues are part of the new normal. If you have an issue with it; unsubscribe.
Yeah, he owes ot to us not hawk predatory sponsors and then expect everyone to give him a hug when he has mental health issues. But fuck me, I guess. Maybe I should make a post about how I've been struggling with depression my entire life so this sub can forgive me for daring to not give him a hug and a kiss on the cheek for it.
live in a different world now where companies are just faceless businesses anymore
It's a real shame he built his company off of his character and used his own face as its logo.
If you have an issue with it; unsubscribe.
Believe me, I will. I guess I thought when he finally apologized for his shitty business practices that he'd actually apologize, instead of ignoring the sponsorship stuff all together. I thought he was better than this.
Others stand to defend Babish:
Great job folks. You bullied this nice dude who has given you hundreds of hours of free labor.
If were being real he saw the post on mildly infuriating and made a whole ass response, which is insecure as fuck .
Also this is a post where hes admitting hes at fault and yall are telling him “no” which is funny as shit.
It’s “insecure as fuck” to address widespread criticism openly and honestly?
one guy saying bad things about you shouldn’t make you wanna write out a giant reddit post defending yourself yeah.
Who needs to be liked THAT much?
Not one guy, it was widespread backlash on multiple subreddits and from like all his fans. It would have been ridiculous not to respond
Criticism over shitty business practices (shilling products designed to prey on the mental wellbeing of your audience and introducing paywalls with no notice) isn't the same as bullying.
I mean grow up. You have no right to his labor. None at all. Notice? What is this, you're upset about his terms of service? Lol.
Babish isn't gonna fuck you, bro.
"I have no point but I have a funny"
[Continued:]
What point could I make that wasn't already addressed in my response to this parasocial weiner?
Babish made some shitty business decisions, people criticized them. That's not bullying. When people complain about McDonald's discontinuing a menue item, you never see people say "stop bullying the CEO :(". So why is it suddenly bullying when criticism is directed at a YouTuber for their shitty business practices? Yes, Andrew is a person. But that doesn't mean he's immune to complaints just because some parasocial crybaby thinks telling a person to do better constitutes "bullying".
Except if you read the comments on some of the posts people absolutely went well beyond criticism of the business decision to personal insults and vitriol that could indeed accurately be described as “bullying”.
Fair enough, but they made a general comment about how this sub bullied him, not just a few shitheels who took it too far.
cool but that wasn't what the person you told to "grow up" was doing, so why don't you stop huffing your own farts for a minute
I didn’t tell anyone anything? What are you talking about?
whoops, thought you were the OP in this thread, not just a random interjection like me. I'm cutting down on caffeine and it is not making me smarter
[…]
he isn't doing it for "free" mate, he's running a for-profit business. yes bullying is wrong, but people complain about businesses all the time.
Free labour, minus his YouTube revenue, sponsorship revenue, merch revenue...
There's wanting to encourage civility, but let's not jerk each other off here.
Or let's. I mean. It's a Saturday night and I'm alone. I'm open to talk.
Grow some balls lol
The knives are out:
Dude you've been up your own ass for years. When you first started blowing up and dragging your videos out - I nicely suggested you stop adding 5 minutes to the beginning of every video showing us how to make bread. I told you having a separate "Bread with Babish" and telling viewers to reference that would be better. You basically said I was stupider than frog excrement and shouldn't think. Like what? Then a few months later Basics with Babish comes out. Go fuck yourself.
Bro has main character syndrome, thinking Babish personally spites him and only him.
In the nicest possible way, touch grass. Maybe even read your comment out loud and you might realise how ridiculous you sound.
You’ve been carrying this grudge for what, eight years? Touch some grass.
"touch grass" is so overused and trite it makes me want to tear off my dick
Another brings up Babish’s Hogwarts Legacy sponsorship:
Can we get an update on promoting the transphobic wizard game, and apparently deleting comments mentioning trans people on the video?
Imagine what a sad life you live if you’re that triggered by a video game. Literally don’t play it. Why do you care if others play it?
Because buying the game is basically saying "This mid wizards game is more important to me than human rights, fuck gay people, fuck trans people, kill em all, i dont give a shit lmao".
Seek help.
You should seek help if you dontate your money to making the lives of others worse intentionally and give 0 fucks about it.
[Continued:]
You are what is wrong with society. Again, it is advisable that you the seek the psychiatric help that you require. (By the way, it’s a great game).
Glad to know im whats wrong with society and not the scumbags who gave money to anti trans charities. Just know while you're playing it that trans people are living worse lives because of you.
The lil smart phone that ur using right now that relies on cobalt, which was mined by little kids like those in the DRC without protective gear so your phone could have a battery. Just know while you’re sitting here being a keyboard warrior that thousands, if not millions, of little kids’ lives are getting worse because of you.
a.) Im not on a phone and do not own a phone.
b.) Theres a difference because you NEED a computer of some sort to function well these days. You do not need the wizard game.
c.) Theres a difference between supporting a company like that where they try to hide it and keep it from the public and openly supporting someone who basically just comes out and says "Yo btw if you buy my game ill use the money to kill trans people, thanks"
[…]
Imagine being privileged enough for someone enjoying/promoting a Harry Potter game to be what gets ur panties in a twist. I get Rowling is a shit show, but be fucking for real 🤦🏻‍♀️ I’m sure your phone is a product of child slave labor and I’m sure you buy a lot of shit that promotes even more terrible things. Get off your high horse and stop crying over first world problems.
Im sorry its considered being on a high horse for wishing people didnt support a disgusting fucking transphobic monster thats hurting fuckloads of people. Its not even like other companies where its semi hidden and you have to look for it, she's blatantly and publicly a transphobic scumbag piece of human garbage. If you don't know any better, sure, but when people are buying the game with the specific intent to support transphobia or don't care that they're giving their money to someone who who's publicly transphobic and openly supports bigots and the hurting of people, you're transphobic and probably terrible.
People like you don’t actually help anything. All you do is piss off ordinary people and make them less likely to care about the trans community. You’re just bitter and you feel better about accomplishing nothing when you sling garbage comments at people. Grow up and do something that actually helps the community. Spewing vitriol and calling people transphobic is not helping.
Someone is transphobic Gets called transphobic Surprised Pikachu face
So you want me to stop calling transphobic people transphobic?
Id rather not help at all than actively hurt the community, ruin people's lives, and fund charities that fight to give people less rights. At least I fight for human decency and people's rights and don't donate to this shit.
I’ll rephrase. YOU ARE ACTIVELY HURTING THE COMMUNITY BY MAKING PEOPLE LESS LIKELY TO SUPPORT. Seriously, stop it. You’re not helping, you’re hurting. You’re not the face of the community, you’re just shouting in the comments at people who just want to watch a guys YouTube channel about food.
”He supports JK Rowling.” No he doesn’t. The game is a game. Cry all you want about what she said, the rest of the community has been ignoring her for years.
“She donates against trans acceptance”. Yes, and she would anyway even if the game didn’t get made. She was already rich after the books, it’s a pointless argument based solely on your principles and not on doing any good.
You keep calling people transphobic, but they are not. Buying a video game is not transphobic. You’re delusional and childish. This conversation is over, leave these people alone and spend time figuring your own shit out.
[Continued:]
I dont know in what universe giving more money to be donated to anti LGBT stuff is not transphobic. "Yeah i give money to charities that murder children but i dont support child murder". Sounds insane right? Thats what you're saying. That just because you're giving money to support making trans people's lives worse that you're not transphobic. You're being insane. "She'd support it anyways so who cares!" is the most insane argument i have ever read in my life holy shit. xD
Hopeless and stupid. You may as well go vote for Trump, you’ll fit right in. Honestly at this point I think you’re paid to make the trans community look bad, it makes more sense than whatever other insanity you want to keep blathering. I’m just gonna block you, like every other rational person.
You gave money to the company that made your smart phone and therefor you support child labor since the whole phone, or at least pieces of it, were made from child labor. You’re a disgusting human being….you see how fucking delusional you sound, bro?
One user taps out:
I’m glad you addressed it, but I had to leave. Best of luck to your future endeavors and I hope lessons were learned.
And yet, here you are
This isn’t the airport. You don’t have to announce your departure.
what an original comment, you are so smart and funny and original for having made such a thought provoking post. I hope you print this comment out and frame it so that your children will learn to appreciate what an original thinker their parent is. are you the person who invented "touch grass" as well? big fan of your work
lol I can only imagine how sad your life is that this is how you spend your time
if you think it is sad that I am here on reddit, doing reading and commenting, I have some terrible , alarming news for you.
[Continued:]
lol yea that’s definitely what I meant 😂
One user still has issues, despite the apology:
Any amount of warning that you were planning to paywall the site would have made it a lot more palatable of a change. Doing it without telling people felt shady at best and deceptive at worst.
Yeah, and this is an acknowledgment and an apology. Seems a little cruel to keep dragging him at this point.
I guess it starts with a halfhearted apology. There’s no explanation for why it was sprung without notice.
It’s “yeah whatever guess I should’ve told y’all but here’s some more stuff coming up that you can pay me for”
here's some more stuff coming up that you can pay me for
Ah, so you're one of those people who feels entitled to infinite free content from creators.
It’s weird to me how many people think YouTube content is free. YOU are the product. Free means no monetary exchanges. Do you think Andrew makes no money from YouTube? Do you think YouTube makes no money from you? His videos are not free.
[Continued:]
Wow you are REALLY fucking dumb huh?
No but apparently you are. How does Babish not get paid from YouTube? Is every video he posts “free labor”?
[…]
No I just don’t think this should be portrayed as an apology when it’s really just an advertisement
Maybe he can post again so you can still be mad for some fucking reason
A slapfight breaks out:
I’m sure you have good connections but if you want some fresh eyes on your script, id be down to give some coverage. Why am I being downvoted so heavily? As an aspiring writer myself, I know how hard it is to get feedback on a project. I’m a fan and offering my time and energy. I don’t get what the problem is. lol wtf is this sub? Comments insulting people getting upvotes in a thread about how negative comments have affected someone is wild work. Fuck me for being interested in Andrew as a writer.
Same vibes as the dude who asked Elon to run Tesla who was a nobody
get outta here man lol
Because you’re a nobody lmao
Holy shit, just read through your comments and god damn are you miserable hahah.
meanwhile you're scouring the profiles of people who upset you, looking for mud to sling
Someone calls me a nobody, I gotta go see what mighty status they got in the world to be shitting on others lol.
He literally thinks babish is gonna choose him or something but instead he attacks me 💀
[Continued:]
Looooool you’re gonna play victim??? Aint no fucking way lol. You insult and disrespectfully gatekeep and now you’re the one talking about being attacked hahahahahaha fuck all the way off with that nonsense.
It's a lot of fun to experiment with different types of Japanese noodles. You can always eat as many noodle meals as possible whenever you visit Japan since they are tasty and enticing.
This page will provide important information about some of Japan's most famous noodle dishes. In Japan, macaroni is a staple cuisine.
There are thousands of varieties of noodles that differ from those found in the West, both in terms of pasta composition and dish ingredients. We'll look at various types of Japanese noodles in this article.
Despite mentioning several noodles, Japan is known for manufacturing its pasta in restaurants. Thus the flavor and type vary by location and restaurant, providing unique and inexplicable varieties.
Furthermore, if you love good meals, read on as we talk about some of the different types of Japanese noodles.
1. Ramen
Ramen is a clear noodle soup with various ingredients and flavors. Restaurants typically produce their pasta for the meal, similar to ramen noodles (only in appearance).
There are hundreds of distinct types of ramen, and some chefs spend their entire careers perfecting their original recipe; some ramen, also called lamen, can take up to 12 hours to prepare.
You can find thousands of ramen restaurants throughout Japan. We have diverse preparations such as tsukemen and tantanmen in addition to the traditional shoyu lamen, shio lamen, and misso lamen.
Furthermore, Some chefs take it further and make ramen with black stock, on fire, or packed with meat; the sky's the limit!
2. Soba- Buckwheat Noodles
Under the is a typical Japanese buckwheat noodle that you can eat cold or heated. They are widely available throughout Japan, and they are a popular dish that replaces the traditional rice and meat lunch.
There are various sorts of Soba, ranging from the most consistent industrialized to the most delicate artisanal Soba prepared from pure buckwheat. Also, the pasta frequently blends with the dish's sauce, resulting in a delicious flavor.
Furthermore, Soba's crunchy texture, the noodle, and sauce mingle and meet on the tongue, and its aroma is all features.
Kakesoba, tenpurasoba, zarusoba (cold noodles), sansaisoba, and many more are among the most traditional. This is one of the different types of Japanese noodles.
3. Okinawa Soba
Okinawa Soba, which originated in Okinawa Prefecture, is another type of Soba. On Okinawa, it's simply known as "Soba." The origins of this Soba variant remain a mystery.
However, you most likely made it before 1902. It was initially known as "Chinese Soba" (Shina Soba).
Okinawa Soba uses flat noodles that are nearly as thick as Udon. People make them with flour instead of buckwheat, for example. The accompanying soup is similar to Ramen noodle soup.
Pork, Konbu (seaweed), and Katsuobushi flakes make up the broth for this Soba. Scallion, stewed San-Mai Niku (pork belly), Kamaboko (fish cake), or Soki are popular toppings (boneless pork ribs).
4. Udon- Macaroni Grosso
Udon is a wheat flour-based thick pasta. This noodle is thicker and whiter than risotto, and it comes with dashi, mirin, and shoyu broth. The same meals are usually served with Udon noodles in a Soba restaurant.
Just as there is soba, there are zaru udon, kake udon, kamaage udon, chikara udon, kare udon, kitsune udon, and many others. Udon has a milder flavor influenced by the sauce and the ingredients used to prepare it.
However, Udon noodles are dazzling white, spherical, and thick, whereas soba noodles are brown, silky, and thin. Also, the flavor and density of udon noodles vary depending on where you eat them in Japan.
5. Somen- Cold Noodles
When you look at the name of this noodle, you can probably predict how it's served. It was always a hit with the crowd, whether it was served chilled or frigid. It's a fantastic summer dish.
Some folks, however, serve it heated in the winter to stay warm. "Nyumen" is the heated form of Soba. This is one of the different types of Japanese noodles.
Wheat flour is used to make something. It's light and airy. The strands are first boiled and then cooled in ice. They then dip them in a traditional sauce known as "Tsuyu." Myoga, onion, Katsuobushi, and ginger are all present in this sauce.
Furthermore, Nagashi-Somen is a well-known variation of Somen. It's a summertime delicacy found in select Japanese restaurants. Also, the strands are placed on bamboo fumes, which are very cold water.
6. Harusame- Transparent Noodles
Harussame, often known as glass noodles, is a type of transparent starch and water noodle. They're customarily sold dry and utilized in soups, fried foods, and spring rolls.
Bean sprout starch, potato starch, sweet potato starch, tapioca starch, and canna starch are common ingredients in harusame. In the case of the Japanese variant, potato starch is generally used.
Salads with translucent pasta are popular, as are hot pan dishes with translucent pasta. They're also frequently utilized to prepare Japanese versions of Chinese and Korean cuisines. Shirataki is another similar option.
7. Hiyamugi- Cold Wheat Noodles
Hiyamugi is another cold Japanese noodle. It is similarly made of wheat and has a diameter of 1.3 to 1.7 millimeters, making it thicker than Somen but not as thick as Udon. Hiyamugi is usually a basic white tint. However, it can also come in shades of green or pink.
Hiyamugi, like Somen, is a light and pleasant summer noodle. It's usually served with ice or in a glass bowl of water. "Tsukejiru," the accompanying sauce, is made of Mirin, dashi, and soy sauce.
8. Shirataki- Pasta Without Calories
Due to its low-calorie content, Shirataki, also known as Konnyaku, has acquired favor outside of Japan as a weight-loss food.
Konjac yam makes thin, translucent pasta high in nutritional fiber, low in carbohydrates, and soft in calories. Also, this is one of the different types of Japanese noodles.
Furthermore, Sukiyaki, nikujaga, and other cooked foods frequently include noodles. Pasta can also be drained, dried, and roasted to minimize bitterness and give it a consistency commonly used in soups and sauces.
9. Wafu Pasta
Wafu Pasta is a Japanese pasta that is similar to Italian pasta. Although it's called "pasta," it's essentially a noodle. Between noodles and pasta, there are some distinctions.
Wafu pasta is made from durum wheat or other types of flour and cereals or grains. The flour is mixed with water or an egg and shaped into stands. It all started in a Tokyo restaurant called Kabenoana in 1953.
Wafu pasta is stirred with sweetened rice wine, Dashi broth, soy sauce, butter, and mushrooms such as Shimeiji and Shiitake after it has been cooked. So, if you want to create it at home, feel free to use anything you have on hand.
10. Yasikoba- Fried Noodles
Yakisoba is a beautiful noodle dish that is stir-fried—pork and vegetables such as onions, carrots, cabbage, salt, pepper, and Yakisoba sauce. Beni Shoga, Aonori, mayonnaise, and Katsuobushi can all be used as toppings.
Yakisoba is made by sauteing a form of Chinese noodles known as "Chuukamen," pork, vegetables, and a special sauce. The noodles are made of wheat flour rather than buckwheat, despite the name.
Furthermore, You can find yakisoba throughout Japan at food stalls, fairs, and festivals (matsuri). It's also known as "Yakisoba Pan" and may be found in convenience stores. Also, the vendors frequently serve stir-fried noodles in bread or hot dog buns.
11. Tokoroten- Seaweed Noodles
Tokoroten is an agarophytic algae-based pasta that the Japanese have consumed for over a thousand years. Also, Tokoroten was frequently consumed in the Edo region after being introduced to Japan by China during the Nara period.
Furthermore, Traditionally, the pasta was created by boiling tengusa and served immediately. You can identify the appearance of kanten, jelly, or agar-agar through freezing. Tokoroten noodles were made as a result of their strong resistance.
Moreover, Tokoroten can be served either warm or cold. It's finest served as spaghetti with a blend of vinegar and soy sauce and nori, pepper, and sesame seeds.
Tokoroten is done as a dessert with kuromitsu in the Kansai region. Without a doubt, this is one of the different types of Japanese noodles.
12. Instant Noodles
Instant noodle is a common ingredient in Japanese cuisine. Also, Instant noodles appear to be available in every country.
Momofuku Ando, the founder of Nissin, was the first to invent this noodle in Japan. They come in a variety of tastes and varieties.
There are two types of instant noodles based on price. Some of them are inexpensive, costing between 100 and 200 Yen. Instant noodles will be more expensive if they have additional toppings. Their costs vary between 200 and 350 Yen.
Furthermore, the flavor of instant noodles is excellent. Everyone loves them since they simply take a few minutes to prepare.
They do, however, contain a significant amount of sodium, fat, and other unhealthy ingredients. Also, this is one of the different types of Japanese noodles that are not highly recommended for consumption.
13. Chanpon- Pasta Cooked in Soup
Chanpon is a noodle dish from Nagasaki. In Japan, Korea, and China, there are several variants. Chinese cuisine was the source of inspiration for this meal. Pork, shellfish, and vegetables are fried in fat and served in a bone broth.
Furthermore, the chanpon is served with noodle soup. Because the pasta is cooked with the soup, only one pan is required, unlike other ramen recipes. The components and the flavor vary depending on the season, place, and situation.
14. Shirataki- Konjac Yam Noodles
It's fantastic to be able to eat noodles without worrying about gaining weight! If you enjoy that type of experience, I recommend Shirataki. "Ito-Konnyaku" is another name for it.
Because the konjac yam is very low in calories and carbs, it also contains a high amount of fiber.
Furthermore, Shirataki is available in both dry and moist forms. In a liquid, wet Shirataki simmer. If you acquire this variant, deodorize the noodle by washing them before cooking. You can keep it for up to a year.
Sukiyaki (hot pot), Nikujyaga (meat and potato stew), and other dishes are made using this noodle in Japan. After draining and drying the noodle, they also roast them. Noodles lose their bitterness when they are roasted. They then serve it with sauce or soup.
15. Sanuki Udon
Sanuki Udon is a Kagawa Prefecture Udon variation. It was given that name because Kagawa's previous name was "Sanuki."
Sanuki Udon is distinguished by its noodle strands. They're square and have a chewy texture. Dried infant sardines make up the broth.
In addition, this is one of the different types of Japanese noodles that we use two methods to serve. Also, they can directly pour the broth into the boiling strands and eat it like regular noodle soup. Alternatively, they can dip the strands in a broth-based dipping sauce.
16. Toshikoshi Soba- New year's Eve Noodles
Every Japanese person eats Toshikoshi Soba on New Year's Eve. It is a symbol of endurance and strength. This is a classic Soba noodle. It is made with the essential ingredients of Soba noodles.
Eating soba on New Year's Eve dates back to the Edo Period. People eat it to wish for a happy, tranquil existence.
Because the noodles are easy to break apart, they give people the impression that they have overcome adversity during the year.
Also, Dashi broth is used in the soup. Only chopped scallions are used as a garnish. You can also add raw eggs, Tempura, and Kamaboko fish cakes to make them tastier.
2024.06.09 12:30 TraditionalDensity In response to the 2014 AVMA Literature Review: "Dog Bite Risk and Prevention: The Role of Breed" (Repost)
This is a repost of my analysis from 2 years ago. I was reminded of it because I saw more pit bull attacks in the new (LOL). I figured since then, a bunch of people have not seen it, and it may be helpful to help combat pit bull propaganda.
In a recent thread I saw this AVMA Literature Review: "Dog Bite Risk and Prevention: The Role of Breed" linked as proof that pit bulls are not inherently dangerous.
There was much circle jerking in how we cannot accept the science but as I was reading through it, it became clear it is not as scientific as people were claiming.
First to start, this literature review is not "the scienceTM". It claims to be "peered reviewed" but it not! There is no scientific journal publication associated with it, instead it is peer reviewed "similar to scientific journals" but instead of objective reviewers selected by an academic journal, it is reviewed by people AVMA purposely selected themselves, creating a significant conflict of interest and questionable findings as a result. The fact that they lean so hard in to the "peer reviewed" description shows they are trying mislead readers into thinking that these findings and recommendations are more scientific than they really are. Its nothing more than lobbying from an advocacy group.
Additionally, it is not unbiased, as it quietly says, while it tries to appear scientific, it includes other non-scientific sources including "scholarly ethical assessments" which allows them to bias the commentary and interpretations in a way that suits whatever "ethics" they want:
While principally a review of the scientific literature, it may also include information gleaned from proprietary data, legislative and regulatory review, market conditions, and scholarly ethical assessments.
Furthermore, much of the literature they use is inconclusive or contradictory to their claims. They are hoping that no one will actually read them. In the rest of the post I will go step by step with each section they outline in their "peer reviewed" literature review and point out issues with their claims. Numbers in parenthesis (e.g., "(99)") are references to the studies cited in reference section of literature review.
"Breeds Implicated in Serious Bite Injuries"
They are unable to hide from the fact that in their own review they found at least 12 separate studies (5,9,13,16,21,20,22,23,24,25,26,27) that support the premise that pit bulls are more likely to bite people. They also found that pit bulls are more likely to be involved in causing severe injuries and fatalities (21,23). The flimsy excuse is that pit bulls are more populaprevalent, so they are just proportionally biting more... but it has no citation associated with it and therefore not a evidenced based claim, it is just an unproven hypothesis. Note the initial bias and goal of this review is to specifically defend pit bulls. They offer no defense of other breeds and actively attack german shepherds as a problematic breed instead.
"Controlled Studies"
Amazingly almost all of the studies cited (60, 61, 62, 63, 64) explicitly excludes pit bulls from their assessment of bites controlling for prevalence. In bad faith they ignore their previous argument of prevalence and look at studies in areas and time periods of low pit bull prevalence to show that pit bull attacks are rare (ignoring their underlying prevalence rate). Through omission of studies related to pit bulls they can say that the study they reviewed show pit bulls do not represent a high risk of biting but other dog breeds do. Again counter to their narrative that dog breed doesn't matter and again throwing german shepherds under the bus.
"Aggressive Breeds"
Nothing really interesting to note, they basically say small dogs tend to be more aggressive but not dangerous, some big dogs are less aggressive, but other big dogs are aggressive and dangerous. Again counter to their narrative that dog breed doesn't matter.
"Pit Bull Types"
Nothing really to comment on except that the study claims dog adoption agencies tend to mislabel the breeds, which they take to mean that people can't identify a pit bull from other dog breeds (45). Just a weak appeal to uncertainty with no supporting study.
"Breed Bans"
They claim no evidence that breed bans work with the first study (8), though the evidence suggests that the banned wasn't really enforced as the same number of banned "dangerous breeds" bit people before and after the law was passed. Comically, banning dangerous breeds resulted in less human bites (humans biting humans), it was a weird and old study.
Completely counter to the conclusion they state, the second study (51) is a more modern study and actually shows a significant reduction in hospitalization from dog bites when banning pit-bull type breeds (roughly 20%). It was noted these bans were even more effective in protecting children, though adults and kids both benefited from the breed ban.
On top that that, they when they cite alternatives (53) to breed bans ("these may include ordinances relating to breed") they cite a Spanish study where they made pit bull ownership so difficult, it was an effective ban for most people! They required a special license to own dangerous breeds like pit bulls, special insurance to cover damages from your pet, a psychological assessment, no criminal record, and the pit bull must be muzzled and leashed in public areas and be microchipped. Honestly, if that is the alternative to a breed ban. I'm cool with that! This resulted in a massive 38% drop in hospitalization due to dog attacks.
"Conclusion"
The author selectively quote the Duffy 2008 study and ignores the part where they found significant associations with breeds and aggressive behavior, though obviously chooses to emphasize the opposite conclusion of the entire study. They further engage in a bad faith argument saying since breed isn't a sole predictor in aggressiveness that it shouldn't be considered at all. Overall an uncompelling argument that isn't actually science based.
tl;dr, AVMA is hoping you don't actually read anything they write, it isn't a "peer reviewed" paper, and most study claims defending pit bulls are made in bad faith and often not supported by the science^TM.
Finally, as a parting thought, it is actually amazing how many studies there are that they were compelled to cite that show how dangerous pit bulls are and the positive impact from banning pit bulls would have in reduced hospitalizations. There was also a lot of bad faith assessment of the science and calls into question the bias and motivation of AVMA writing this article.
2024.06.09 12:20 No-Weakness-7222 Malta Goya - It works!!
I’m sure we’ve all seen the malta goya suggestion for increasing supply all over reddit, tiktok, etc.
I went from oversupplying to under supplying due to sleeping through my MOTN pumps and have been struggling with getting my supply back up for the last 2 weeks.
I decided what the hell, I’m going to try this NA malt beer trick that people swear by. I drank it yesterday with some sweetened condensed milk (it’s how it’s recommended to drink it even outside of EP) and it doesn’t taste too bad. Personally I compare it to stale matcha whereas I had my husband try and he says wet dog food but personal opinion I suppose.
Anyway, I’ve been pumping between 60-90ml per session lately. I drank one of those suckers yesterday and my next two pumps were 120ml which is what my LO is currently taking at each feeding! I made sure not to change anything in my routine after drinking it to make sure I could get some accuracy in results - I’m impressed!
