2024.05.16 06:59 PropRatActual The Black: Ep117 Pure Evil

What's up all! 4th Wall here! I finally have power returned to my home, and can play a little catch up! This one's a heavy hitter, No NSFW needed (I hope) but if you've got kids, be warned.
First, Previous, Next
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
A bright flash of blues and whites spat a greyish black object into normal space a mere one hundred Clicks from physical asteroid cloud that provided a natural barrier into the Lurix system. USN Olyvia’s drives instantly flared to life, and she made for the outer edges of the asteroid field with a purposeful stride. The senior Crew was at hand, having alternated shifts so they were well rested for this endeavor. Captain Correllus Grarzia shifted in his chair slightly, watching with interest as his star helmsman switched from his standard control configuration to a more “analog” twin joystick and pedals. ‘The kid really should be piloting a fighter’ he mused just as the young lad turned to look at him. “Ready, skipper”

“Take us in. All ahead slow.” Cory ordered calmly, before keying up the ship wide broadcasting channel. “This is the captain. We’ve just entered the Lurix system. Rig for silent running. I repeat, rig for silent running.” All across the ship, nonessential systems were shut down; their lack of electronic signature aiding the stealth coating on the bulky former troop transport. In engineering. Patrick, Cammy, and the rest of their section powered down a large portion of the larger systems onboard.

Life support was set to emergency backup, with old school oxygen candles lit in special housings that allowed their life-giving emissions to be circulated throughout the ship. Each major section of the vessel had their own supplies of these low-tech solutions, and Olyvia carried enough of these candles to survive for several days without functioning life support if needed.

Only a few were lit this time, using them as an augmentation to allow for minimal use of their perfectly functioning life support systems; and Cammy returned from the compartment just in time to aid in shutting down two thirds of Olyvia’s fusion reactors. This was not usually part of the silent running protocol, but Cory had added it for this mission. While they knew where their target would be, they still knew very little about what defenses awaited them inside the system.

Patrick keyed up the mic, “Engineering reporting in, silent running.”

*acknowledged* came a voice back. And Patrick leaned back in his chair just as Cammy arrived. “Well, that’s that.” He sighed.

Cammy stepped behind his chair, rubbing his shoulders for a second, “candles are lit. Two per section. At this rate we won’t run out for a year.”

Patrick chuckled, standing before looking over at his team, “sandwiches are in the mess hall. Half go now, half after. We’ll wait and go with second shift.” The team nodded and soon. The room was half as full. “Hurry up, and wait” Patrick mused, and turned to the rest. “Hold’em anyone?”

Over the next several days, shifts were kept short with a high rotation frequency. Olyvia picked her way through the natural minefield created by a destroyed world, slipping between the dead planetary shards with deadly caution. She ran quiet, with all but minimal deflectors shut down, and a single detuned laser online on each of her flanks as a last resort against impacts. Cory, Jesse, Patrick, and Cammy met regularly to keep tabs on the ship’s progress. The admiral’s transmission had reached them in time, and the four of them, plus Jacky when she could pry herself from the infirmary, worked to formulate a plan to get into the freighter without killing everyone. They had Hera and Jacobs reports, but those reports also admitted to a certain degree of incredible luck on their part. Things could have gone very differently, and the murder of the freighter during the admiral’s capture operation hinted at a change in tactics from their foe.

Mackenzie’s Privateers had liberated several freighters since they began operations, keeping to their cover as “pirates” by leaving nothing big enough to betray their secrets behind. A few of the other captains had left pieces of inoperative Unity tech, strategically damaged and jettisoned after the fight, as red herrings to convince both the Vorath, and the Thermians that these “pirates” had somehow gotten ahold of Unity warships.

Cory stepped into the cargo bay to meet Patric and Camorra. They were tinkering, carefully he hoped, with one of Olyvia’s harpoon missiles. It was a project triggered by Cammy’s brilliant, if outlandish, idea. “We know these freighters all ran the same codes, and the same infrastructure in their computer cores. Why can’t we hack it. Human computing should be perfectly capable of it.” Cory remembered her words as he stepped up to the two, “at ease” he waved them away as they threatened to salute him, “how’s out little project coming.”

“See for yourself” Patrick smiled handing him a data pad.

Cory took the offered device, quickly scanning through the data, “All I see is Olyvia’s system logs. Did you give me the wrong one?”

Patric smiled evilly, “that is coming from the missile, we found a common power regulator chip that dam near all Delmar freighters use in their integrated core management. Our mole here mimicked that regulators protocols to get into one we installed in a conduit over there” he pointed to an open panel. “It’s designed to cycle through several common chip sets and protocols to get access.”

“You hacked Olyvia?” Cory asked, eyebrow raised in a combination of amusement and irritation.

“Well, “Cammy said calmly, “we had to test it, and Oly’s the only ship close enough…”

“I see…” Cory mused, “it will have to do, we will be reaching the edge of the field in three days, how many of these can you have ready?”

Patrick scratched the red stubble punctuating his jaw line. “Hmm two, maybe three, including that one.” He winced at his captain’s expression, “took us a minute to get the virus right, sorry.”

Cory sounded to himself like a broken record, “I guess that will have to do as well. I’ll leave it to you.” He turned to return to his office but was interrupted half way there by an urgent request for his presence on the bridge.

Jesse rose to greet him as Cory stepped into Olyvia’s command center, and he nodded towards the ready room off to the side. The two of them quickly stepped inside and Jesse closed the door. “Jesse, what’s this about” Cory asked, settling into his desk chair.

Jesse, his first officer, and battle born brother looked at him seriously, “The first of our stealth probes have made it into the system proper….. It’s not good” He tapped at his data pad before handing it to his captain, “The enemy is doing something big down there, and we don’t know what. What we do know, Is that there are three heavy cruisers in orbit, and three more destroyers in floating patrols around the system.”

Cory scrolled through the pad as his first officer made his report, pausing at the same information on the planet’s surface, “These are military installations. This makes no since. We haven’t had a use for Lurix in millennia. It’s always just been a haven for aquatic and semi aquatic species. Why didn’t our intel warn us of this.”

Jesse nodded grimly, “I don’t know for sure, but I have my suspicions.” He reached over, tapping at the tab to open a particular file Cory had yet to find. “We found these in orbit as well.” He pointed to a pair of Delmar constructed freighters, parked in orbit over the marsh world. “I authorized a single transmission to a single drone, uploading Patrick and Camorra’s hacking program into it, and we sent it to one of those freighters... this is what we found.”

Cory opened the indicated file, and felt bile rise in the back of his throat as he watched. “Ready a tight beam, send it back the way we came, Towards Simo.” Jesse looked at his captain in understanding. The risks of transmitting this close to the enemy was a grave risk. Measured against the information they just witnessed; however, it was an absolute necessity. Jesse took the offered tablet, “The Admirals need to see this…. Both of them.”

————————————————————

Clint Stevens groaned as his communicator beeped from his desk. It was a very early morning on a weekend, and Frie had let Natalie stay at her grandparents for the weekend. He quietly slipped from the entanglements of a profoundly comfortable Delmar goddess he had somehow been gifted with as his wife, and silently cursed the inevitable destruction of his plans. The Com was linked to his computer console, and Clint tapped the file as he sat down.

The file opened, beginning with a grim looking Corellus Grarzia who made an intro statement that froze Clint in his thoughts. Before he could begin to prepare himself, images flooded in that turned grogginess into razors edge consciousness ringing with a white hot fury. Frie was ripped from her slumber instantly, reaching for her biometric pistol safe as a response to the unbridled rage she experienced from her husband. It took her a moment to realize that they were not being attacked, and she rushed from their bed, neglecting even basic decency to be by his side.

The two of them watched the Horrors unfold. Children… small children of multiple different races, stacked in a freighter’s hold like cattle, being thrown food like one would an animal. Massive screens played, promising safety and full bellies should they only but kiss the hand of a severe looking Vorath female. All who had not, were treated to daily ice cold sprays mixed with random beatings. He watched as desperate older siblings attempted to shelter their kin from the abuse, often times paying the ultimate price for their valor.

Clint and Frie were spared a further assault on their senses by a beeping light, indicating an urgent call from Clint’s adopted brother. Frie slipped out of view, reaching for a night gown as a furious Mac, accompanied by an equal parts shocked and livid Lyrian, appeared on screen.

“You’ve seen it” Clint stated. There were no barriers between them, no formalities. Only pure truth.

“I have,” Mac rumbled. “Why is it always kids..”

Clint shook his head, “I can have a battle group there in two weeks. It’s not soon enough, but.”

Mac nodded sharply, “I’m redirecting everyone not on critical missions. Simo and Kid are already there with Olyvia. Wisconsin is enroute. We will await your arrival….. Clint…” Clint’s eyes met Mac’s in a joined promise that reached across time and space.

“No, there won’t.” Clint answered, responding to Mac’s unspoken statement.

___________________________________________________________

A week later, The Chancellor Thomas Durrant of the Sol Federation perused the latest transmissions from Unity space. He was due for reelection this coming fall, and it was a close race. His opponent was labelling him a Warmonger, as he was an outspoken proponent of a more active role in the struggle against the Vorath, and it was working. The points were closing in the polls, and The Chancellor had not come out on top with the latest debate results. Humanity simply was not interested in further conflict. For the first time in human history, the vast majority of the Human race was content with peace.

The Chancellor took a sip of his mug as he opened a file from Admiral Stevens marked priority, but not top secret and promptly spit the contents in his mouth back into the mug. It was a complete file on some kind of intelligence operation, and Durrant almost wondered if it had been sent to him in error. The gruesome cover video dispelled that notion as the leader of Humanity itself watched horrors thought long dead play out in front of him. Several minutes later, he closed the file, and opened a message prompt.

“Viktor, are you up.” He typed.

*Yea, Tom. I’m up, the campaign ain’t gonna run itself into the ground.*

Durrant snorted at the dark humor, “Viktor, I was sent something. It changes… everything” he typed, attaching the cover video, and the longer form surveillance recording he had found inside the file from Clint. Several minutes passed in tense silence before…

*Jesus Christ, Tom.*

Tom Durrant took a long slow breath, “Do you still have your man at The Post.” He paused before sending, knowing what he was asking.

*Yea… yea I do, Tom. Are you sure you want to do this. This has ‘it will blow up in my face’ written all over it.*

“I know, but this bigger than me. Do it, and announce a press conference to follow if The Post runs with it.” Durrant typed and sent the last message, closing down his console. He stood slowly, feeling his age for the first time in recent memory, and walked heavily to bed.

The Post ran with the story. In the next 48 hours, the “leaked” scenes of tortured children, some barely more than infants ripped its way into Humanities Psyche. The revelations of what exactly was going on behind Vorath lines assailed Humanity, spurring many to call for blood, and Others to cry hoax. Around and around the political commentators debated, and redebated the shocking footage.

Chancellor Thomas Durrant followed through on his word, and was now stepping up to the platform and the Microphone as promised. He stood there for a full minute, meeting the eyes of as many of the hundreds of reporters before him as he could. The weight of his expression prompted a flurry of flashes as camera drones captured the image. Durrant allowed all of this to happen, waiting until the din of activity settled into a heavy silence. “People of Humanity… By now, you have undoubtedly seen the shocking pictures from the far side of the galaxy. Many of you believe it to be a hoax, a desperate ploy for political points. Allow me to be clear. This is no hoax, I received these disturbing images directly from Admiral Clint Stevens, who is marshalling the forces at his disposal as we speak. He aims to do something about these orbital concentration camps, and I support his actions with the full backing of my authority as Chancellor of the United Sol Federation.”

Durrant paused, letting the information sink in before continuing, “to answer the question as to whether this is a political ploy for points. Let me be perfectly clear, I alone released the footage from inside those torture ships, and I do not care if you believe it to be a political ploy. If Humanity can see the atrocities committed to the young innocents in those images and refuse to stand up for them; I no longer would wish to lead that Humanity. Yes, we are few compared to what we once were, but we have a strength that cannot be fathomed by those who chose to side with pure evil. Make no mistake, any being that is capable of torturing and murdering children deserves the title.” The Chancellor of United Sol skewered the silent crowd with a withering gaze, “All of you here know that I have been an ardent supporter of taking a more active role against this pure evil, and my opponent has made a great many statements regarding my supposed “warmongering”. I believe that to debate him further on this matter is as wasteful as it would be irrelevant. As such, I am suspending my campaign immediately. Pending permission from donors and the campaign review board, I will be donating the totality of my campaign war-chest to the purchase of relief supplies and construction of rehabilitation facilities for these children.” Durrant paused as a wave of gasps swept through the room as a volley of flashes assaulted his eyes. “Holding the position of leader of the Human race seems so insignificant in comparison,” he said softly, almost to himself before scanning the crowd. “The election is 4 months away. If you wish to reelect me, so be it; but know this.” Thomas Durrant rose to his full height, “If you elect me this fall, know that I will use the full weight of this office to unleash the full might of Humanity upon this evil, or I will resign from my post and travel to Unity space myself.”

With that. Chancellor Thomas Durrant spun on his heals and marched off the stage.

2024.05.16 06:25 CosmicCreeperz Opinions on my next steps for a water heater?

I have a pretty old (~16 years) Kenmore Power Miser 9 gas water heater (installed before I moved in). It has been going strong (maybe a bit less efficient recently) until I had to have my house fumigated and the gas shut off.
Now, I can't get the pilot to relight. I replaced the piezo igniter (though the old one seemed to work via testing... ouch) but I think the issue may be that the pilot has been running continuously for 16 years so the internal igniter element may be corroded/sooty and won't spark gap. If I keep the pilot button depressed for a while I can smell a bit of gas so I think the gas line, etc is ok. Of course this is just my guess, but seems reasonable?
Anyway... I know I need to replace this heater soon, but my goal later this year was to install solar + battery + new electrical panel, etc - and get a heat pump water heater (I'm in CA so I think it would be the most efficient solution w/ solar, etc). I really just need the damn thing to work for another ~6 months max until I can get the solar + electrical work done (ie run 220v to garage as well for the heater).
So, my question for y'all: should I get it repaired? Try to do it myself? (From what I can tell I need to detach the gas line/thermocouple/etc so I can unscrew the lower panel and pull the heating element out to see if I can clean up the pilot igniter... doesn't seem too bad but I'm not sure how much I want to trust myself taking apart anything on 16 year old water heater...) Or how much should I be paying for what would likely (if I'm right about my guess) be a simple fix?
Or if it's not repairable/reasonable, would a stopgap cheapo gas water heater be something I could sell in 6 months? (seems like in CA even a low end 40g gas heater is still $700 + installation...). Or do I just have to accept I'd eat the cost (maybe just something to live with... still small compared to a whole solar installation and electrical work, I guess)
Also: are the 120v plugin heaters any good? I feel like going with that now would be a compromise I'd regret, I really want to do it right and get a dedicated 240v heat pump heater, etc.
Thanks in advance for any thoughts/opinions!

2024.05.16 06:22 Don138 Buffs and nerfs should be tied to Major Orders.

Like the title says, pros and cons should be tied to MOs.
Obviously the pros of MOs rn are medals and spreading managed democracy to the galaxy and the cons of not completing them are we might eventually be fighting to defend the sol system.
But humans are notoriously bad at dealing with slow, imperceptible threats (think climate change), and really great at mobilizing to address immediate issues (think the massive manufacturing spin up during WW2).
So we need some immediate incentives both positive and negative to work for on MOs.
Here is the idea:
Planets have various research facilities, manufacturing plants or resources on them, and defending them or liberating them gives associated buffs and nerfs.
Some examples I thought of just off hand:
This planet manufactures 1/2 the total CPUs for turrets, losing this would increase turret cooldown (or decrease accuracy/fire rate, etc). Then there might be a planet much closer to home that manufactures the other 50%, so if we get beaten back that far we might lose them entirely.
On the flip side another MO might be: “our scans indicate this planet has an abundance of the plant used to synthesize stims, capturing this planet will allow us to send all helldivers into battle with extra stims if we liberate multiple.
The options are endless, from losing the planet that harvests ice for energy weapons and thus losing them entirely, to capturing an automaton planet with weapon factories that increases projectile weapon dmg by X%.
Pros of this idea: -Gets players really pushing MOs
-Gets players engaging with the lore and galactic war because it has an immediate effect on them. Helping keep the community thriving.
-Might encourage players who have completed warbonds and capped medals to work on MOs which benefits new players again keeping the community alive.
-Will serve as a “meta breaker” and encourage more play styles as weapons/strategems get buffed or added or nerfed or removed.
-Can provide an ingame/lore justification to patches
Cons:
-Player toolkit needs to be somewhat balanced, because you can’t have a weapon removed if there are no other viable options.
-More work for Joel
-Behind the scenes game/coding/engine/dev stuff I have no idea about
How cool would this be!? Imagine if next weeks MO was “The Tenderizer sucks because the alloys needed for the barrel are from Hellmire and to account for poorer barrel strength the powder charge was reduced. If we can Liberate it the Tenderizers dmg will go up to its original specifications of 75”
I’m newer to the game so tell me what you think, any pros and cons I missed or ideas for what the benefits and penalties could be!

2024.05.16 05:45 krla22 I lost all passion for college

I'm a 4th year graduating student...but I don't know if I'm graduating. I'm just flying by everything without caring.
I'm not doing anything for our thesis anymore because I feel I've done enough. I've coded the entire website, both frontend and backend. All my team has to do is add features the panel wants, but they aren't even active aside from 1 guy who does the hardware.
If the other three group members just do the programming, it'll work out. But they're not doing anything, and that hardware guy keeps pressuring me to do the other features. Like I've done enough...why don't you ask the other guys to do work?
I'm so fed up of doing presentations too. I don't want to do anything like presentations for professors anymore. I'd much rather just be working and doing 1 job than doing all these shitty nonsense school work.
I hate my section, I hate my college. I never felt like I belonged in this place. I've only ever felt fine when I was doing my own thing, working freelance, talking to clients, and spending time with my girlfriend.
I don't like nor want to go out as well. I hate going out to get to school for some shitty attendance, presentation, or seminar. It can all be done online, so why not just do that?
I completely hate my college. I've lost so much of my passion for learning because of college. I learn things fine on my own, but never in college. This entire college thing is just being forced to do things to get a grade without even a job guarantee after all of it.
I just want to work, to not go to college anymore, I don't want to do this shit anymore. Maybe money is motivation, and I don't think that's wrong.
When will this end? I don't want to do research anymore. I hate presentations. I hate talking to professors. I hate meeting my classmates. I hate everything related to my college.
I hate this.
Edit: I guess being able to afford what I was only dreaming of after college assisted in getting me super burnt out. I was able to get 6 digits in savings to buy all the tech and hobbies I want through freelancing as a 20 year old. I'm able to do that without college, so I just don't want to do college anymore. My parents earn enough to make us live paycheck-to-paycheck too. My tuition is free as well.

2024.05.16 05:10 Sparky_McDibben Security Systems

If you've never seen it, I highly recommend the TV show Leverage. A five-season long mashup of heist movies and sitcoms, it follows a group of thieves who break the law to enforce justice on everyone from corrupt cops to the US Congress. In addition to being decent television, it was also a great source of twists, stings, and a variety of genre tropes, including security systems.
Now, I don't know about y'all, but sometimes I just plumb forget to add stuff like cameras, motion sensors, etc. And I've found that working off a template reminds me to add stuff back in. So I started putting some of these together as in-world security systems.
Most of you will likely not find this helpful, but for those of you like me, it gives you a structure to start from. That, I find, makes all the difference.

Alarms: Alarms trigger any nearby patrols to check out the source of the alarm. Patrols start at the source of the alarm, then quarter and search the nearby rooms, moving in pairs when possible. If nothing is found, the alarm is shut down, but guards linger nearby for the next 30 minutes.
Patrols: 1d3 bodyguards (per Core Rules); 1-in-3 chance they have mini air drones available to sweep the area
Security Hub: Location from which all security measures can be monitored, and the security comm net controlled. Typically watched by a dweller (netrunner-in-residence), with stats as netrunner (per Core Rules).
Tier [X]: Security is set up in tiers. Tier 1 areas are available to anyone who's supposed to be in the building. Tier 2 areas are a bit more restrictive (an armory within a police station, for example, or a judge's chambers). Tier 3 areas are for very restrictive secured areas, like a SCIF.
Glenn-Rieder Security System:
A must for those with moderate security concerns, such as museums, banks, etc., the Glenn-Rieder will stop all but the most determined crew of thieves.
Cameras: 1d6 + 1 per floor, Stealth DV 14 to evade notice, 2-in-6 chance camera is being actively monitored.
Motion Sensors: 1d3 per floor, Contortionist DV 13 to evade notice, automatically triggers silent alarm.
Locks:
Guards: There are 1d6-1 active patrols at any given time, with another patrol standing by in a nearby break room, and a netrunner (dweller) camped at the security hub. Guards usually patrol a set beat, but will actively and aggressively track any suspected intruders.
Windows: All windows secured with standard locks (DV 9 Pick Lock) and laser tripwires (DV 13 Electronics / Security Tech check)
Exotic Countermeasures:
Roll 1d6 for each of the following countermeasures. On a roll of 1, that countermeasure is in place.

Strange Issue With Network (Cont.)
So I made a post about a week and a half ago which is this one, describing a very strange phenomenon my windows machine is having that I cannot for the life of me solve. I'd like to see if some new eyes could look at it, in addition to the new things I've uncovered/done.
I've done what the comments suggested. I flushed my DNS, did ipconfig /release and /renew neither of which did anything. A network reset under "Advanced network settings" may have helped, as sometimes when I do it and run off of the restart, I don't seem to have the issue. But then when I shut off my PC and turn it back on, it happens again. Sometimes not at all though.
In control panel, network and internet, network and sharing center, I can select my connection and look at the IPv4 and v6 connectivity. Most of the time, not always, both have "Internet" when the machine is working fine, while most of the time when my issue occurs, IPv6 hits me with a "No network access".
I've disabled IPv6 item in the properties button on this same panel. I've manually preferred 8888 as my DNS server and 8844 as my alternative DNS server.
I've done pretty much every single clean, health check and repair command I could find. And I've also tried turning off my firewall completely. Nothing has helped.
I do not have any VPNs installed (that I know of), and only the network device that I'm wanting to use is enabled anyways.
After further observing the issue, I've also noticed a few things. The first, and perhaps this is really telling or it is really pointless, is that I cannot connect to localhost. As in, I have a program running that should run on local host, and it does normally, but when the issue arises, I get "This site can't be reached". Furthermore, I've discovered that the issue almost seems deteriorative. I'm not sure if this is just stuff getting pushed out of ram or something, but I feel as though I can access less websites, or do fewer things the longer the issue persists. Like I might be able to browse forums while the issue is happening initially, but after a few hours I can no longer connect.
Finally, I ran a network report using netsh wlan show wlanreport to see if I could get anything. Not too sure how to read this, or what the important bits are, but I've got failures, 7 warnings, and 0 successes, as per the image attached. Then I get a bunch of descriptions of my sessions. I only see time stamps of activity at the very start of my PC booting up, and then a couple of messages around the time I shutdown, but nothing inbetween or around when the issue strikes for most of them. I don't have an accurate time of boot up and issue arising, but there are a few that have a random "WLAN Extensibility module has stopped." like 3 hours into use, but it seems to also have one at the start and end too and most others do not. Disconnect reasons are varied. My most recent one is "Unknown" and there are a few others which have that.
Any and all possible suggestions, troubleshooting steps, or solutions would be greatly appreciated 🙏
Edit: Exact error code on chrome is:
"This site can't be reached
[websiteurl] is currently unreachable.
Try running Windows Network Diagnostics. (Does nothing)
ERR_CONNECTION_FAILED"

5 Types of Shower Wall Panels: How to Choose?
Undertaking a bathroom renovation is a substantial commitment, both in terms of time and resources. Selecting the ideal material for your new shower wall is a critical decision that requires a balanced consideration of both functional attributes and aesthetic appeal. This comprehensive guide will provide you with an in-depth analysis of five distinct types of shower wall panels, outlining their advantages and disadvantages, to assist you in making an informed choice tailored to your specific requirements.

What Features Do Shower Wall Panels Need to Have?

Before getting all starry-eyed about the colors and textures, you have to consider some practical aspects. Here are some of the key features that any decent shower wall material needs to offer.

https://preview.redd.it/qmrvtf8zap0d1.png?width=612&format=png&auto=webp&s=a6b822b2798962f3d91793b64d72b0789c33e438

Water Resistance

Ensuring water resistance in shower walls is crucial, not merely to prevent water splashes but to guarantee the material’s longevity and better durability. For perspective, well-sealed ceramic and porcelain tiles exhibit a water absorption rate of less than 0.5%, marking them as highly water-resistant. Conversely, materials like drywall can absorb water up to 10% of their weight, rendering them unsuitable for shower settings. Such high absorption can result in structural issues and mold proliferation, jeopardizing the wall’s structural integrity.

Mold and Mildew Resistance

Beyond aesthetics, mold issues and mildew present significant health risks. Research indicates that mold exposure can exacerbate respiratory conditions, particularly in asthma sufferers. Materials such as solid surface panels and acrylic inherently resist mold. Specifically, the non-porous nature of solid surface panels virtually eliminates mold growth opportunities, reducing mold presence by up to 99% relative to conventional materials.

Ease of Cleaning

Efficiency is paramount. On average, individuals allocate roughly 15 minutes weekly to shower cleaning. Materials like solid surface and acrylic can potentially halve this duration, courtesy of their smooth, non-porous attributes. In comparison, natural stone, due to its inherent porosity, demands more cleaning time, especially if not consistently sealed with a sealant. However, with diligent care and sealing, natural stone can offer enduring elegance and durability, lasting for a long time.

Durability

Optimizing the high durability of chosen materials is essential to ensure value for money. To illustrate, when adequately cared for, solid surface and porcelain tiles can endure for over 30 years. This lifespan surpasses many conventional materials by 50%, which may necessitate replacement or extensive upkeep within two decades.

What Types of Shower Wall Panels are Available on the Market?

Over the years, shower wall panels have evolved, presenting a diverse range of choices to meet individual preferences, requirements, and budgets. Traditionally, ceramic shower walls have been the go-to choice for many due to their timeless allure and low maintenance. Granite stands out for its inherent beauty and resilience, always maintaining its position as a preferred selection for those valuing both aesthetics and durability.
For those inclined towards high-end materials, natural stone walls—encompassing granite, marble, onyx, and travertine—offer an opulent, sophisticated touch to any bathroom. Recognized for their lasting lifespan, these exquisite materials are available in a variety of styles.
In recent times, the market has embraced novel materials. Acrylic panels, for instance, are steadily gaining popularity. Not only are they mold and mildew resistant, but they also simplify installation processes. Their diverse color and design spectrum offer a wide range of decorative possibilities. Solid surface panels, a newer addition, boast a sleek, uninterrupted appearance, which many homeowners find attractive. Notably durable and non-porous, they can adeptly replicate the look of natural substances.

Solid Surface Shower Wall Panels

In the realm of contemporary bathroom designs, solid surface shower wall panels stand as a beacon of luxury and practicality, invariably catching the attention of judicious homeowners. What exactly contributes to their remarkable qualities? Let’s explore.
Solid surface shower wall panels are the culmination of state-of-the-art technology intertwined with finesse and craftsmanship. These panels are meticulously fashioned using an exclusive blend of aluminum powder, sourced exclusively from a prestigious state-owned brand. This guarantees a composition boasting a pure 100% aluminum hydroxide foundation, completely devoid of any calcium powder inclusions. The distinct formulation of 15+25+75 fine powder facilitates the creation of high-density panels that exhibit a pore-free surface.
The resultant product is not merely a feast for the eyes but also provides a tactile experience that’s genuinely gratifying. A testament to its excellent engineering, the panels offer minimal water absorption, safeguarding against common bathroom problems such as stains and discoloration. The distinctive factor in these panels lies in the incorporation of high-grade resin, which plays a crucial role in determining the product’s longevity and aesthetics. Employing a lesser quality resin can precipitate yellowing over time; however, the utilization of Isophthalic resin in this context is noteworthy for its superior anti-yellowing prowess. This resin harbors a stable molecular structure, thereby promising a product that boasts a refined texture, augmented hardness, and unmatched resistance to yellowing and contamination, ensuring that the beauty of your shower space remains untarnished over time.

Waterproof

Water is a natural companion to showers, but without proper management, it can be detrimental to shower walls. Solid surface panels excel in this aspect. Their impermeable nature guarantees water resistance, safeguarding against potential damages and ensuring a long-lasting lifespan.

Easy to Maintain

Optimizing time is a priority in today’s fast-paced world, and solid surface panels offer a highly convenient solution for bathroom maintenance. Their sleek surface facilitates effortless cleaning, enabling you to maintain a pristine bathroom with minimal exertion over the years.

Stains and Discoloration Resistance

Bathrooms are susceptible to various staining agents, from hair dyes to diverse bathing products. Solid surface panels, composed of high-quality resin, are highly resistant to most stains. Their non-porous nature further minimizes the risk of discoloration, ensuring long-lasting aesthetic appeal.

Easily Customized

Solid surface panels offer a flexible foundation for homeowners to articulate their distinct design preferences. Whether your emphasis lies on a variety of colors, unique textures, or a particular design theme, these panels can be tailored to harmonize with your aesthetic vision, enhancing the visual appeal of your bathroom. Additionally, solid surface panels can mimic the appearance of natural materials, such as the patterns and colors of marble. This means you can achieve the luxurious look of marble easily.

Highly Durable

Given the infrequent yet substantial nature of bathroom renovations, durability is of utmost importance. Solid surface panels are constructed using premium materials, specifically designed to withstand high levels of moisture, mechanical impacts, and routine wear and tear. Solid surface panels, being highly durable, don’t warp or swell, ensuring that mold and mildew don’t find a conducive environment to grow. A highly durable surface will resist staining, scratching, and other routine damages that lesser materials might succumb to.

Anti-Mold

Mold is not only aesthetically unappealing but also poses potential health risks. The non-porous nature of solid surface panels serves as an effective barrier against mold proliferation, thereby promoting a healthier and cleaner bathroom environment for you and your family.

Antimicrobial

Beyond mold resistance, solid surface panels are engineered with the capability to resist a wide range of microbial agents. This intrinsic antimicrobial property further enhances the hygiene and safety of your shower area, reducing the likelihood of bacterial growth and subsequent

Acrylic Shower Wall Panels

Acrylic panels have garnered significant attention in the home improvement sector due to their combination of cost-effectiveness, longevity, and visual appeal. They are frequently utilized in bathroom upgrades. But what are their inherent characteristics and advantages?
Acrylic shower wall panels are fabricated from a heat-treated thermoplastic compound, resulting in a consistent sheet. These panels are recognized for their polished finish that not only elevates their visual appeal but also offers a mold and mildew-resistant surface. A notable feature of acrylic panels is their ability to mimic various materials. With a wide selection of different colors and patterns, they are a preferred choice for home interiors. For those seeking the aesthetics of natural stone or ceramic at a reduced cost, acrylic stands as an excellent alternative. Moreover, when using individual acrylic sections, a secure and watertight seam between panels can be achieved.

Lightweight and Easy to Install

Acrylic panels are notably light, making them ideal for DIY projects. Their installation is uncomplicated, eliminating the need for a professional team. This results in time and labor cost savings.

Easy to Clean

The sleek finish on acrylic panels is both aesthetic and functional. It prevents the adherence of water droplets and soap residues. Cleaning is effortless, only requiring a damp cloth without the need for strong chemicals or intensive scrubbing.

Affordable

Opting for acrylic panels provides a balance of style and utility without straining your budget. They represent excellent value, given their durability and low maintenance needs.

Waterproof

Acrylic panels inherently resist water due to their non-porous composition. They’re an optimal choice for moisture-prone areas like showers. Their design, having fewer seams than conventional tiles, minimizes the chances of leakage.

PVC Shower Wall Panels

Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) may initially seem complex by name, but within the realm of bathroom refurbishments, it represents economical and functional choices. Let’s delve into the details of PVC shower wall panels.
PVC shower wall panels, fabricated from a plastic-derived material, are both lightweight and cost-effective, catering to a broad spectrum of homeowners. Their diverse design and finish options facilitate various aesthetic goals, from contemporary to classic, without incurring the expenses of higher-end materials.

Lightweight

One of the standout features of PVC panels is their weight. Being incredibly lightweight, they’re easy to transport and handle, which is a boon for DIY projects. This lightness doesn’t compromise their strength, though. They’re sturdy enough to stand up to daily shower use.

Water Resistance

Ensuring water resistance is crucial for shower areas. PVC panels, with their non-porous properties, guarantee this protection. They prevent water penetration, safeguarding against potential damage. Their design suits wet environments, promoting durability and minimizing maintenance needs.

Low Maintenance

PVC panels cater to individuals preferring minimal upkeep. Their sleek design facilitates effortless cleaning of dirt and residues. Additionally, their resistance to mold and mildew ensures a hygienic bathroom ambiance.

Cost-Effective

Are you working within a budget? PVC panels present an optimal solution. As one of the most cost-effective materials available, they combine resilience and aesthetic appeal without straining your finances. They stand out as a top choice for those seeking quality and affordability.

Fiberglass Shower Wall Panels

Fiberglass, a material with a rich history, has become a favored selection for numerous homeowners, especially in the fabrication of shower wall panels. But what attributes contribute to its distinction?
Fiberglass shower wall panels are meticulously manufactured through a process of intertwining delicate glass fibers to form a textile-like base, subsequently reinforced with a resin compound. This technique yields a product that combines lightness with robust strength. Furthermore, these panels frequently feature a gel-coat surface layer, optimizing the texture and augmenting its resistance to water penetration.

Lightweight But Strong

The beauty of fiberglass lies in its paradoxical nature. It’s incredibly lightweight, making it easy to handle and install. Yet, its strength is commendable. This balance ensures that homeowners don’t have to compromise on durability when opting for easier installation.

Stains Resistance

Nobody likes a stained shower wall. Fiberglass panels, with their gel-coat surface, resist most common bathroom stains. Whether it’s soap scum or hard water marks, a simple wipe is often enough to keep the panels looking pristine.

Easy to Install

For those who love a good DIY project, fiberglass panels are a dream. Their lightweight nature combined with their flexibility ensures that installation is straightforward. No need for specialized tools or professional help, making them a cost-effective choice.

Tile Shower Wall Panels

Tiles have long been a foundational element in bathrooms. Their adaptability and visual appeal have endeared them to homeowners for generations. However, when discussing tile shower wall panels, we are highlighting a contemporary adaptation of this timeless choice.
Tile shower wall panels are large, unified panels designed to emulate the appearance of individual tiles. These panels capture the beauty of traditional tiles without the complexities of individual tile placement, grouting, and associated drawbacks. Constructed from materials like porcelain and ceramic, these panels deliver a cohesive appearance while preserving the allure of conventional tiles. Furthermore, they serve as an excellent substitute for glass tiles on shower floors, especially in homes with children or seniors, due to their enhanced grip and minimized slip risk.

Highly Customizable

One of the standout features of tile panels is their customizability. They come in a plethora of designs, colors, and textures. Whether you’re aiming for a contemporary look or a vintage vibe, there’s a tile panel out there that fits the bill. This flexibility ensures that homeowners can achieve their desired bathroom aesthetic with ease.

Higher Cost

Quality often comes at a price. Tile shower wall panels, given their aesthetic appeal and durability, tend to be pricier than some other options like PVC or acrylic. However, many homeowners find the cost justified, given the longevity and upscale look they offer.

Require Regular Cleaning

While tile shower wall panels eliminate the hassle of grout lines, they still require regular cleaning to maintain their shine. Water spots, soap scum, and other bathroom residues can dull their appearance over time. Regular cleaning ensures they remain the centerpiece of your bathroom.

2024.05.16 04:19 TheFellatedOne Creative Rural Home Defense Ideas

I've been thinking a lot about creative ways to defend a rural home, and I wanted to share some ideas I've come up with. I'd love to hear your thoughts and suggestions too. Here's what I've got so far:
  1. Treeline Around the Home with Obstacles and Fencing A dense treeline to act as a natural barrier, making it harder for intruders to approach without being noticed. Adding natural and man made obstacles like thorn bushes or fencing, creates multiple layers of defense. A common idea but I feel is very useful.
  2. Cleared Field Around the Home Keeping a cleared field around the house reduces fire risk and provides a clear line of sight to the treeline. This open space makes it difficult for intruders to approach without being seen or exposed to your defenses. Again a common defense idea is having a clear field of fire that can be observed but this set up will be especially effective with the other ideas.
  3. Motion Sensing IR Cameras in the Trees with Solar Panels higher up to power them Installing motion-sensing IR cameras in the treetops gives a wide field of view and reduces tampering. I've seen the newest cameras are relatively affordable but now with latest software your system should be able to notify you if movement is animals or human. Seeing the effectiveness of ring cameras it is critical to be able to observe and communicate with intruders remotely from the safety of your home or when you are away.
  4. Outward Facing Floodlights That Turn Off All Home Lights Outward-facing floodlights around the home that when activated also turn off all indoor lights. This setup is especially effective if intruders have night vision goggles, as the sudden light disrupts their equipment and gives you a tactical advantage.
  5. Chemlight Orbs in the Trees basically glass orbs that will be exploded with a small charge that mixes the agent similar to breaking a glowstick that sprays glowing liquid when remote activated to surprise intruders and make them highly visible. Shutting off all lights around the home and using NVGs makes it easy to spot intruders and track their movement.
  6. Remote Activated Mechanical Caltrop Deployment Boxes Having caltrop deployment boxes around the home that can be activated remotely allows you to deploy them around the home and key ingress points on command. This setup hinders intruders' movements. Bonus: A magnetic roller that can quickly pick them up once the threat is over.
  7. Sprinkler System with Liquid Deterrent Option A sprinkler system around the home that can be pressurized with a deterrent liquid like fuel, capsaicin, or CS gas can halt intruders. I can't remember where I read it but basically getting covered in fuel would stop anyone from doing just about anything.
I have a lot more ideas but from this list I think that almost all of them would be fairly practical but would require some technical knowledge to build these systems. What do you guys think?

2024.05.16 04:09 KrampusTellsTheTruth Dark side of the moon (Book announcement rewrite)

I held the package close, its precious contents pressed against my spine. The steady beeps that communicated life drove my exhausted legs forward. Even with the combat stimulants running rampant through my blood, my nervous system bringing fibrous polymer muscles to their brink, and a set of assisting servos practically tripling my stride speed, I was exhausted. The sun and its rays bared down on me like a predatory dragon, each ray a fang made of flame, ready to tear open my suit and scorch my skin…but not today.
“Not today!”
I picked my stride up and sent every muscle in my body past overdrive, I tore stone and sand as I sprinted farther forward and collapsed. I had finally made it to one of the only rations of shade on the desolate moon surface. As I hit the ground and retreated into the shade, I removed the pack from my shoulders and gently laid the box down. I opened the zipper that held the sunshade on and looked at the pale figure inside.
“Hello my love, I hope you’re resting well, we finally made it, now just time to wait…and you'll be better again”
I took my helmet off and took a deep breath before beginning to set up camp. I thought back to the mission room, where I was nearly denied entry to Io
“You understand the journey you’re undertaking has never been completed before? This is a mission that as of this moment has a 100% rate of failure. Do you not think it would be wiser to simply say your goodbyes and prepare for a life without her?”
I shook my head as the council stared at me with tired expressions and pained eyes
“I am three times decorated am I not?”
The head minister nodded and shuffled her papers, reading slowly from the top page
“Argon Lethius, 12 tours, 7 rotations, 153 confirmed neutralizations, 3000 pending, strength record unmatched, augmentations class S granted. You’re also the sole surviving candidate of the sky petal program”
The sky petal program, an experimental research project I had taken part in to pay for my wedding. The core concept was simple: graft photovoltaic cells onto our skin and use nanotechnology to create a bio-mechanical ecosystem within the dermis.
The result was going to be humans capable of photosynthesis, making us less susceptible to nutrition based disaster. Rejection however was high in the program and when your body is trying to fight its skin, things get ugly quickly. A dormant gene I had passed on from my mother allowed my body to accept the prosthesis but at great cost, I was now essentially allergic to solar radiation. When I'm planetside I'm just fine, but if I was in an area devoid of atmosphere, the nanotech would go overkill, usually producing energy akin to solar flares from my skin.
“Mr. Lethius, your feats and skills are unmatched, your circumstances are impossible to reproduce and the dedication you’ve shown to this coalition has been unwavering. Which is why we sympathize with your loss, and grieve with you. Crystal was-”
I snapped at her
“Is…she’s still alive”
The minister nodded and corrected herself
“I'm sorry, Crystal is an incredible addition to this council, and we are deeply sorry both internally and externally. But the dragons of Io have no official record, and the sunlight alone could overcharge you in a day, leaving not only our best military asset but also his sick wife stranded without hope of rescue”
I nodded and spoke solemnly
“3 days supply, and a ship to drop me off, if I don't respond in 4 days, come get my body and bury her where we fall. She loves it there. Even if I can't save her, I want her to rest somewhere she would be happy”
I snapped back to the present and finished setting up camp. Unpacking our supplies and connecting a set of solar panels to her cryo-chamber. I watched her take deep breaths through the ventilator as I threw a tarp overhead and began digging into the rockface.
“You’ll be ok my love, by this time tomorrow you’ll be your old self again”
I dug for hours, tearing holes in my suit and flaying the skin from my fingers. As my blood hit the white dirt and stained the cracked surface, I felt a degree of nausea rise up from my stomach. Saliva filled my dry mouth and I bit down on my tongue to prevent the vomit. Bile reached the back of my throat and I dug my fingers into the dirt, searching for the Will to resist my body’s urges. The sun couldn’t take me, my mind couldn’t shake me, I would not buckle before saving her. Before long I couldn't go on, and I needed to rest.
I swallowed hard and sat back, laying down and looking up at the harsh sky.
“Hindsight is 20/20, we can keep trying new things but sometimes this is just how things work out, I’m sorry”
I nodded as the doctor left the room and she sat motionless in her gown.
“That guy didn’t know what he was talking about, there’s so many treatments, we’ll just go to another doctor”
She brushed a strand of hair out of her face and looked up at me
“I’m tired of my love, can we go home?”
I nodded without speaking and embraced her, feeling her slow and weakened heartbeat against my chest, its rhythm in sync with my own.
“Sure, We’ll go home”
That was the last time I saw her awake, she fell asleep on the car ride home…and never woke up. I was able to bring her to the hospital where they revived her, but she was comatose, most likely asleep till the cancer kills her.
“I’m sorry my love”
I looked over at her chamber before bringing my hand up to my face and staring at the mangled flesh of my palms.
“A drop of blood for a question, a thousand heartbeats for an answer”
I heard the voice in my head as if it was a thought I had formulated all on my own, but the voice was different, it didn’t belong to me nor anyone I had ever heard before.
“A single tear for a favor, an entire ocean for its completion”
I crawled to the spot where my blood had dripped into the ground, the sand was stained red but almost completely dry. I leaned over it and thought about my honeymoon, I thought about vacations and work, time together and apart, moments where she was everything. I thought about the idea of my life without her, and then it came like a flood. Tears flowed freely from my eyes and drenched the ground, the first falling square on the red stain in the sand. The liquid pooled on top and a small ribbon of crimson fluid flowed upward into the tear drop. The ribbon danced and waved in a thin line through the microscopic ocean.
“What is your question?”
The voice came from above me now, and as I slowly looked upward, a loomed overhead, blocking the sun from view, and causing my heart to skip a beat.
“What…is your question”
Before me now stood a massive beast, speaking in the voice I had heard in my mind and digging his gargantuan claws into the sand. The tip of each toe ended in a blade that was crystalline and almost translucent. Each blade too had a glowing orange stripe that when shifted, turned the sand underneath him to panes of glass. His arms were broad and powerful, covered in green scales and his maw hung open with a light blue mist emanating from his teeth. He was the dragon, the one from Io who space gods told legends about.
“I…I want to know something about my wife”
He knelt down on his two front arms and brought his eyes to my level, a kindness flowing between his seemingly infinite pupils.
“Your wife. She is a story I myself cannot seem to get over. What do you wish to know?”
I looked up at him and let out a deep breath before gesturing to her
“Can- can she be saved”
His gaze snapped to her case and he slowly moved over to where she slept
“You brought her with you, of course you did, you could never leave her behind.
I crawled over and knelt next to him, tears still flowing from my eyes.
“Please tell me, can she make it?”
He turned around and knelt next to me, putting a massive hand gently on my shoulder and speaking softly.
“My boy, She’s already made it, just not in the direction…you were hoping”
He tapped the monitor screen and it stopped showing vitals, instead displaying a digital sign in dark red letters. I read them aloud to myself.
“Subject deceased, time since last recorded activity. 37 hours 22 minutes 48-49 seconds”
He nodded and spoke calmly
“You wanted to badly for her to live, you saw her living, even when she wasn’t”
I slammed my hand on the crate and opened the lid, picking her up in my arms and putting my ear to her chest.
“Come on, come on. You’re ok, you’re ok”
I clutched her in my arms as silence arrived to my ears. I rocked her and cried into her soft silken hair. Her pale skin had lost its glimmer and I pressed my forehead against her own. I spoke through tears and a tightened throat
‘No, she cant die, I found you! I finally found you! Come on sweetheart you’re ok right? Just wake up. He's here baby we made it, please just wake up, please”
The dragon loomed over head and let out a deep breath, speaking gently, so as not to disturb the silence
“She is gone, and even I cannot save her”
I felt my skin begin flaming as I turned my head back up toward him
“Then what can you do? What can you do if you can’t bring her back to me? Why are you a legend if you cant make her breath again?!?”
He whispered softly into her ears and I felt the wind of the world around me change
“Because I can send you to her”
The planet fell silent and she disappeared along with the dragon. The camp was gone, my hand had been healed, my suit was gone and instead I wore a thin white shirt and loose cotton shorts. I was comfortable, and as I stood to my feet I felt as if my thirst had been quenched, my hunger satiated, I was…ok.
“Hello?”
I called to the emptiness, and before long a soft sullen voice spoke back.
“Hello darling”
She took my face in her hands and turned me around, holding my cheek as my whole body shook
“Hi beautiful”
I brought my hand up to her own and felt her soft warm skin against mine, I pressed my head into her hand and leapt forward, bringing her close and up into the air as I spun her around. She laughed as I gently set her down and wrapped my arms around her.
“I’m sorry you can’t stay”
I looked at her and spoke quickly
“What do you mean I can’t stay? The dragon sent me to you, he sent me to see you, so we can be together again”
She shook her head and kissed my softly, as she pulled away she put her hand on my chest
“It’s not your time hero, I’ll see you eventually, but this is goodbye for now”
I woke up on the sand, the dragon standing over me, holding her body as she began to slowly turn to dust. His tears fell on her degrading body as he handed her to me, and lowered his head.
“I'm sorry, it’s never permanent, did she tell you goodbye?”
I took a deep breath and held her in my arms before walking a few paces forward, and laying her down on the sand. I spoke calmly as tears streamed down my face.
“Yea…she did”
He nodded
“That is more than most get, was she smiling?’
I wiped my eyes and laughed
“Yea…she was”
He fluffed his wings and let the world around us grow heavy with winds
“Then your mission is complete”
I continued to cry as I looked back at him and spoke in a wavering tone
“Did you know I was a general?”
He strolled over and sat next to me, watching her particles flow away with the storm
“You were the most powerful general of all time, incapacitating but never killing, for a man with your rank one must usually commit vast atrocities but you…you never took one life”
I nodded and watched the wind whip and carry sand alongside her body
“I didn’t want to take life, I was reprimanded over and over but I always knew there was a better way, she wanted me to try, to make it so at every opportunity we could fight without ending lives…she hated senseless death…and I think I see why now”
He spoke calmly, wiping his eyes as the last of her bones turned to crystalline dust in the wind
“Her death was not senseless, in fact you'll find that when something as beautiful as her dies, it becomes impossible to make sense of it. That does not mean it happened without sense, and it does not mean her death must be for nothing. When men first meet me, they offer a drop of blood, and that is all I require for the question, but to gain my favor, they must give up a piece of themselves”
I sighed and looked up at him
“What do you need from me then?”
He gestured to where her body had sat moments ago
“You just let the biggest piece of yourself go without a fight. You have paid for more than enough trips to see her”
I nodded and spoke without waiver
“I'm not supposed to keep visiting her though, am I? She won’t be happy till we see eachother again permanently, and if I show up prematurely…she would probably be pissed. So ,I guess now I just live?”
He laid down in the sand and let out a deep groan
“I don’t think I’ve lived in quite some time, I’ve been stranded here for so long, evading capture to exist within my freedom, too afraid to face the cosmos again”
I patted his side and gripped what was essentially his ankle
“You shouldn’t be afraid, fear doesn’t do anything for men like us. Maybe we should sit a while, and see if your fear doesn’t go away”
He let out a deep breath and closed his eyes, laying down as I watched the sun rise over the horizon. My heartbeat continued, but as I watched the last of her ashes swirl through the air, I found a modicum of peace, and I thought about her.

2024.05.16 03:54 modernhomeowner ITC Solar Dealer Loan Fees

When buying solar panels, solar loan companies have the option to give you a lower interest rate but charge your installer an up front fee, as much as 40% of the cost of your system. You end up with a loan, let's say instead of $50k for $70k, and a 4% interest rate instead of 9%. Technically though, the fee was billed to your installer who just jacked up the price they charged the customer. This practice is considered a "dealer fee".
Customer goes to claim the ITC, which forbids loan origination fees and interest from being claimed. The IRS hasn't made any direct guidance on this practice.
Solar installers encourage you to claim the $70k.
What is your opinion on the matter?
Thanks!

Hey guys! My names Josh, I hit my 4 years in the field a few months ago and am getting ready to take my J card test. I am looking to see what are some good avenues to go down once i have my card. I am very passionate about my work and know that this is what i am meant to do on this earth. The dream is to eventually get my C10 and open my own shop, but Rome wasnt built in a day and want to set myself up before i make the jump. (im 27 years old) i would say i am a well seasoned apprentice/electrician. My first 2-3 years i did new commercial construction (nonunion) seeing ground up car dealerships and amazon warehouse remodels from start to finish. from there i went to a residential solar company where i did panel upgrades and battery backups every day for a good year. I am currently working for a traveling retrofit lighting company. Once i get my J card i am looking to settle down at a bad as company. what are some good avenues?

2024.05.16 00:09 Goose-Bus Solar in Montana

My Condo Association is rejecting solar panels for condos siting "insurance implications" as they think the panels will compromise the integrity of the shared roofs (condos are townhome/duplex style).
Does anyone know if Montana has any laws protecting homeowners from this? The Bylaws don't explicitly state that solar isn't allowed but they're using a bylaw preventing a/c units "etc." as a loophole.
I've reached out to my legislator as I know other states have Solar Access laws. Just wondering if any Montanans have been through this and what I can do?!
Thank you!

2024.05.16 00:08 Just-a-Guy-4242 Feel good moments…

I see a lot people that post in frustration and worry that they’ll never be “good” at programming, so I wanted to ask for some feel good moments you’ve experienced on your journey to learning programming… I recently had a pretty awesome moment that boosted my confidence, in my programming ability and knowledge.
TLDR: Hobbiest, worked on a personal game project over a year ago, came back to it to improve it, and found my code was well organized, well written, easily adaptable and expandable. Made me realize the studying I have done actually stuck, and maybe I’m not as green as I thought. :-)
I am a complete hobbyist, I work on projects solely for the joy of learning a new skill that just so happens be making video games, which I grew up loving, but have never understood how to program.
I started learning Unity and C# during the tail end of the pandemic, and I quickly discovered I really enjoyed coding, and making games, but understood that, realistically, at 37 years old, I would not be changing careers, so just took the process at my own pace, I worked through the C# Players Guide(5th edition, I think) I completed almost every tutorial series on GameDev.TV that had to do with Unity or C#, and watched many topic specific videos on YouTube, Udemy and skillshare…on topics like AI, Pathfinding, Procedural Generation, ShaderGraph, 2D, 3D 2.5d…
Rick Davidson, Penny de Byl, Brackeys, CodeMonkey, Jason Weimann, Tarodev… amoung many others, have been my teachers. I have made many small tutorial projects, and a couple larger “intermediate/advanced” tutorial projects, but nothing that was really my own, I’d just been enjoying the process of learning and making simple fun games.
Well, a little over a year ago, March 2023, I decided it was time to start my own project. I had no delusions of grandeur, I had no plans on actually releasing anything. I just had an idea for a game, and I wanted to see if I could build it from scratch. So I did.
My game plays like a 2 player board game, Two Factions: Good Vs. Evil, both factions with Three races to choose from (Humans, Dwarves, or Elves, and Demons, Monsters or Undead) with dice rolling, a hex grid game board, different phases for each players turn, combat between units( a basic attack that did a predetermined amount of damage), the goal was to collect 7 “energy” nodes randomly scattered on the board, 3 on each side of the board and one on the center Hex.
Each side takes turns moving their 3 unit types (a collector, a warrior, and an Overseer), around the board, trying to eliminate the other players collector, and collect the nodes before the other player. If a collector is destroyed you have to use collected energy to span a new one. Its all set in a fantasy setting, and the scene is set to look as if your playing a board game in a medieval pub.
I did some really complex (at least to me) things too. Each match is set on a procedurally generated game board, set to look like the chosen game board environment (ie, grasslands, sand dunes/desert, volcanic wastes, wintesnow).
I built my own state machine to manage each players turn. With multiple states, an optional “magical misfire” state, that only occurs if the player rolls a 1 during collection.
I built my own Camera Managment system utilizing cinemachine, it’s simple but it keeps track of which camera is active, controls the camera movement for each players camera… etc.
I built my own player notification system, that allows for timed notifications system that both sends to notification panel for immediate display, and also a log for players to refer back to if needed.
I have multiple managers to keep things compartmentalized, and as OOP as possible.
I created multi base classes that all have numerous heirs, and came up with ways to make everything customizable and unique. Each player has a choice of 3 factions, all with their own UI, their own HomePieces, each unit is unique, and it looks pretty good because I have been using humble bundle since I started learning to get a very large collection of synty model packs, and high quality UI assets.
After 3 months. I had a working game loop, a very customizable game board generation system, and had pretty much accomplished what I set out to do. Everything in my initial development document had been implemented. However, the gameplay itself wasn’t very fun. It all worked and looked pretty good, but it just didn’t have any umph. (I have not added any “juice” either, so it was pretty stale) I decided I had reached the point where I was a little lost on where to take it. I had been spending A LOT of time working on it, 4-5 hours a day on top of my full time job working customer service at the airport. Yes, I was enjoying it, but I burnt myself out, and I started getting frustrated that I seemed to be stuck. I could not think of anything useful or fun to add. I had ideas, but I couldn’t think of how to implement them… and if I did try something new, I couldn’t work out how to get it to sync up with every thing else, and things just kept breaking. I thought “I’m too deep at this point, and I must have too much spaghetti in my code.”
I felt happy with where this project had ended, as it was complete, and everything I had put in my initial planning document was implemented and working…and, I was actually really proud of some of the systems, like the hex grid generator, and the procedural terrain generation, and all the ideas I had about how to initialize the whole thing and get it all working over multiple scenes, with multiple players… I learned a lot, and really enjoyed it over all. I was happy, but felt I had taken as far as I could. Even though I had ideas I wanted to do, like different actions for each unit, different spells for each faction type, etc.
As I said, I was feeling burnt out, I had enjoyed the process but, it had taken its toll. So I took a break from Coding. Not really knowing how long it would be.
I got really into Oxygen Not Included, and spent hundreds of hours building colonies, and trying to reach the temporal tear… I have yet to make it, sadly. I then spent a while playing My Time at Sandrock, and happily built up my workshop, while helping uncover the conspiracy of the stolen water, and returned the desert to a lush oasis… I played many other games in between as well, finding myself analyzing the mechanics, the presentation, the feel… Then the itch came back. I hadn’t even opened Unity in almost a year. I had had a lot of ideas in the in between. Specifically ideas about what I could do to improve the game I had created. So, I thought”I’ll try something simple, see what I remember…“
I found, it was like hardly any time had passed at all. I was a little fuzzy on some things, and I needed a few reminders of syntax and other small things that popped up, but any issues or forgotten techniques were quickly remedied and remembered.
However, I was nervous to revisit my game. I remembered how frustrated I was when I decided to take a break. I just KNEW I had too many dependencies, I just KNEW everything was spaghettified mess and I would be in a nightmare of refactoring to clean things up. Plus, I had read so many Reddit posts about revisiting code, even from just a couple weeks ago, and the programmer not remembering anything about it… like they couldn’t even remember writing it, let alone what it did… So I thought it would be a futile experiment to try and improve my game.
But, I was curious if I could improve things, and add some of the ideas I’ve had. So, I opened up the project, and played my game for the first time in almost a year. I noticed a few issues right away, remnants of my final attempts to improve my game while at the end of a burnout, that I frustratingly couldn’t figure out how to fix at the time. Like the player pieces spawning in the wrong rotation (facing away the opposite of where they were supposed to face.) or the game board generation, if the board wasn’t viable, it was supposed to reset and start over to generate a new board… it was, but the finalization of the regenerated game board wasn’t receiving a certain list of prefabbed terrain tiles, and would spawn those as null, so nothing would appear, where there was supposed to be a terrain tile. So I decided tackle those two issues first.
I dove into the code… and to my surprise, where I expected to find a mess of random variable names, or confusing methods, that do multiple tasks, creating a grid of confusion… I found logical code that made sense. Properties were named in a way that I knew exactly what they were for and what they contained, I could follow the path way of calls and understood what was happening, where.. it had been almost year and I hadn’t even looked at this code, and I understood what was going on. I refactored/rewrote a few areas, and got the unit spawning rotation and the generation reset issues resolved. Surprised at how well I was understanding my old code. I decided to be a little bolder, and rework how moving the players units worked. Originally during the movement phase, the player would roll a D6 and could move each of its units, any number of spaces up to their dice roll, on the board. I wanted the different units to feel more unique, each with their own “stats” as it were, so I added a few variables, reworked a few lines of code, and soon enough I had the movement I was liking for, each unit with its own distance, no dice roll needed. Also, it was fairly easy. I was able to make the adjustments to the code and get the results I wanted without breaking things, without effecting any other aspect of the game, as intended, in a way that made total sense working with the other systems. I am now fairly certain that my frustration and inability to get the result I wanted or expected, was due to burning myself out, by not prioritizing my mental health over my enjoyment of coding.
I have since begun work on improving my game again, in earnest. With a healthier work/life/coding fun balance. I have been working for a couple more months since picking it back up. And I have been able to implement entirely new systems, such as a gamePieceAction system that allows each unit to have unique attacks and abilities, Allows for different types of ability use during the different phases of the turn, so collectors can have collection abilities, were warriors have combat abilities, and each players home can have support abilities like healing units, buffing units, etc…
I have added a FogOfWar system that disallows the players to see each others moves, and I have come up with a lot of ideas for how to improve things, and it’s all working and fitting together without causing a huge headache and without having to refactor half the code to work, my initial attempt was actually pretty good, and I am able to implement the ideas that I think will make it more fun, maybe I’ll get it to a point that I can share it for others to play too, and I am excited to be back to doing something I truly enjoy. Thanks for reading!

2024.05.15 23:52 Staple_Stable Appliances tripping AFCI Breaker

Hi all. Wife and I just moved in to a house that had its circuit breaker panel upgraded prior to it being sold to us. We're in CA, and all of the new breakers are AFCI (my assumption is that the prior ones weren't but this is required by the code now as I understand). Kitchen appliances are tripping the breakers - some with a higher degree of regularity than others:
1) Dishwasher (brand new) will always trip as soon as it starts its drying cycle. The dishwasher is on a 20 amp circuit and it is shared with one other receptacle on the same outlet for the garbage disposal - however we do not have a garbage disposal and nothing is plugged in to this other receptacle.
2) There is one other circuit for kitchen appliances (3 outlets, 6 receptacles) which is also a 20 amp circuit. We have both a microwave (new, table top, not installed with the house) and a toaster oven (not brand new, but used with regularity in our old apartment) plugged in to separate outlets on this circuit. If they are both running at the same time, very high changes that it trips the breaker, though not 100% and happens irregularly. If both are plugged in and we run the microwave by itself (though not the toaster over), it will still trip (though lower likelihood of a trip). However, even having the microwave be the only thing plugged in on that circuit can cause a trip by itself (nothing else plugged in or running).
My understanding from talking to an electrician is that both of these circuits have "shared neutrals" which tends to cause issues with AFCI. One electrician said the simplest fix would be to revert the breakers to non AFCI - though that wouldn't pass inspection (not our preferred approach, as this is our first house and we would prefer to not mess around with electrical not up to code).
Another electrician recommended that we just install a new dedicated 20 amp circuit just for the dishwasher and a new dedicated 20 amp circuit just for the microwave. He said that is how they would do it now if they were wiring a new build or rewiring a house. We're not opposed to this, and we have crawl space that is relatively easy to work with so it won't be prohibitively expensive. I'm just trying to sanity check here - I'm mainly confused as to how this would fix the problem if in both cases having nothing else plugged in to that circuit still causes a trip. Wouldn't that suggest that even having a dedicated circuit for the dishwasher would not fix this (as that is basically what we are doing when we disconnect everything else on that circuit)? They seemed to imply that it was something with the shared neutrals that was likely causing the AFCI trip and not an amp overload (though admittedly I didn't fully understand this).
Any help here would be appreciated - like I said, we're willing to pay to have it done correctly, I just don't want to be in a situation where the dishwasher gets put on its own dedicated circuit and its still tripping the breaker.

2024.05.15 23:04 YoursToo_ Inherited a Beachcomber with heat problems

Inherited a Beachcomber with heat problems
Hi Hottub community.. Long time lurker and first time poster. I’ve always wanted a hot tub and ended up getting one with a house we bought. Mfg Date 2009 model 578.. I’m very excited but there is a problem.
The hot tub is not heating properly. If the jets are on full blast, the hot tub DOES seem to heat (it went from 81 to 86) And there seems to be great jet pressure! However, when the hot tub jets are not on full blast, the control panel throws an error code. I see both LF and HL show up after 15 to 30 minutes.
I've tried turning the hot tub breaker off, cleaning the filter (it was not dirty,) turning it back on... I also ensured the water is filled up properly to the water line.
I’m thinking about trying a new filter for the sake of it, but I am curious if anyone has any ideas.
I called a Beachcomber dealer but they are slammed and can’t look at it for another couple of weeks. I’m not scared to roll up my sleeves but I’m not sure what the best approach is to troubleshoot the problem. They said they’ve serviced the tub about 3 years ago to fix a broken jet.
Right now it’s around 81f with cover on, and the heat light no longer comes on because of the HL error. I posted 3 pics for reference.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!

2024.05.15 22:30 Wyzenonreddit My Power Problems

(Last time someone talked about this they got cooked so take what I say with some nuance and a grain of salt)
I think we all know by now that farming organic with tappers and using them to power generators destroyed the progression of power items. Solar panels, wind turbines, batteries snd even RTG’s (in most cases) are obsolete. You don’t even use any of them during the early game you just rush to get tappers and tungsten for generators and thats it.
Now, my proposed solution for this power problem probably isn’t one that people will like but it will most likely solve my issue. Give generators a durability. Think about it. I’ve always thought of and used generators as a temporary boost in power that you activate when you most need it. But by making it so generators break after frequent and excessive use they are no longer a infinite renewable power source. Now generators can be used sparingly when you need it instead of blasting power 24/7
Also while you’re at it, quadruple the capacity of batteries and make them cost zinc and copper instead of lithium. Ever since batteries have required lithium and zinc they have been totally useless. Batteries were designed in a time where there was few machines and fewer options for power. They made sense back then and were needed for consistent reliable power. Today with the addition of so many new machines came a literal power creep where the capacity of batteries are effectively lower because they need to store more power for more machines. Its just better to have power going at all times instead of storing a tiny sliver of some.
I think generators should be used to construct bases and batteries to maintain them.
tl;dr generators being capable of infinite power is bad and batteries being pointless and expensive is also bad. Nerf generators and buff batteries.
