Lateral cervical disc herniation and nerve root pain

2024.05.15 03:38 RCPCFRN Lateral cervical disc herniation and nerve root pain

Spayed female French bulldog, 6 years old.
Diagnosis of IVDD July 2023 with ventral slot surgery for a herniation at C3/4 in August 2023.
PLDA preventative procedure for thoracic/lumbar spine December 2023.
Dixie is currently having a flare up of pain in her neck again. She had an MRI Monday 5/13 that showed basically the same findings as her last MRI at C2/3 with a lateral herniation, albeit not as severe as the one she had surgery on in August. However, her MRI also shows a malformed/odd blood vessel at the same area. Per the neurologist, the vessel could be putting pressure on the nerve root and causing her symptoms as well. So right now the MRI is sent to the outside radiologist who read her last one to see if anything has changed or gotten worse.
Neuro says this surgery would be more risky than the last one, due to the potential for bleeding with the wonky vessel right now. But surgery IS an option. We are currently doing conservative treatment with Gabapentin and Prednisone along with strict rest (she’s been on these for about 7 days now I think). But just a little bit ago she seemed to have a really bad neck spasm that we ended up giving her some codeine for. We haven’t had to give her Codeine in awhile.
So it boils down to this: does anyone out there have experience with surgery for a lateral disc herniation? Is it worth the risk? I hate seeing my dog like this. Are there other options like laser therapy and/or acupuncture that could also help?

2024.05.15 00:52 Throwaway17263829173 Help me please. All my signs point to cervical myelopathy but doctors say it’s not possible. Could this mri show that the neck is causing symptoms.

Symptoms are gait instability, proprioception issues, fine motor weakness in hands, tingling in both hands and arms.
FINDINGS: No fractures or dislocations are seen. No destructive bony changes are seen. The vertebral bodies are maintained in height. The pedicles are intact. No facet malalignment is seen. The pedicles are intact. The craniocervical alignment and atlantoaxial articulation are unremarkable. The visualized structures within the cranial fossa are grossly unremarkable. No spinal cord myelopathy or contusion is seen. Small mucous retention cyst in the sphenoid sinus is noted consistent with chronic sinusitis.
There is straightening of the cervical lordosis likely due to muscle spasm.
The C2-3 disc level is unremarkable.
The C3-4 level is unremarkable.
C4-5: There is 2.5-3 mm broad-based right paracentral/right posterior herniation of the protrusion type impinging of the right ventral spinal cord borderline narrowing the central spinal canal. The neural foramina are patent bilaterally. Tiny Tarlov cyst in the lateral foramen is seen.
C5-6: There is a shallow broad-based left posterior protrusion encroaching approximately 2.5-3 mm into the spinal canal with associated posterior spurring/ridging impinging on and mildly flattening the left ventral spinal cord. Tarlov cysts in both neural foramina are seen.
C6-7: Tarlov cysts in both foramina are noted without disc space narrowing, annular fissure, posterior herniation or central spinal stenosis.
C7-T1: There is minimal right posterior bulge without disc space narrowing, annular fissure or focal herniation. Small Tarlov cysts in the foramina are seen.
The T1-2 disc level is unremarkable.
STRAIGHTENING/MILD REVERSAL OF THE CERVICAL LORDOSIS PARTIALLY EFFACING THE ANTERIOR ARACHNOID SPACE FROM LOWER C4 TO LOWER C6 VERTEBRAL BODY LEVELS LIKELY DUE TO MUSCLE SPASM WITHOUT EVIDENCE FOR FRACTURE OR ACUTE BONY ABNORMALITIES. 2. 3. 4. C6-7: TARLOV CYSTS IN BOTH FORAMINA ARE NOTED WITHOUT DISC SPACE NARROWING, ANNULAR FISSURE, POSTERIOR HERNIATION OR CENTRAL SPINAL STENOSIS. 5. C7-T1: THERE IS MINIMAL RIGHT POSTERIOR BULGE WITHOUT DISC SPACE NARROWING, ANNULAR FISSURE OR FOCAL HERNIATION. SMALL TARLOV CYSTS IN THE FORAMINA ARE SEEN.

2024.05.14 13:20 daswef2 [RATE ANNOUNCEMENT] Brazil Rate

Hello, welcome to the Brazilian Classics Rate! This rate covers five albums released between the years 1968 and 1974, exploring the likes of Tropicália, MPB, Samba, and more. We are excited to enjoy this music with both long time fans, and also welcome newcomers to experience these all-time favorites for the first time.
Note: I am not Brazilian and am not a Portuguese writer / speaker. My apologies if anything is lost in translation through this process.
Hold on: What’s a rate?
About once a month, this subreddit holds games called “rates” where a host selects a collection of songs and people score each song on a scale of 1-10 (with a single 11 & a 0 available as well). Ballots of these scores are submitted, and then over “reveal” weekend, the host takes the averages of the songs and eliminates them from worst to best, giving one song out of all the albums the top spot, the crown, & bragging rights forever.
Our sister subreddit popheads has a Guide to Rates Video that can give you a broad overview of rates (please note our reveal process is thread-based instead of video chatrooms). And here's recent examples of a rate announcement and a rate reveal.
BALLOT Due Date - June 21st, 2024
Reveal Weekend - June 28-30, 2024

Os Mutantes - Os Mutantes (1968)
Os Mutantes was made up of Rita Lee, and the brothers Arnaldo Baptista and Sérgio Dias. In 1968 Os Mutantes released their debut album, were featured on the Tropicália Ou Panis Et Circenses compilation, and performed as the backing band for Gilberto Gil's self-titled second album. The Tropicália movement embraced taking international ideas and re-interpreting them, combining them to create something Brazilian. Os Mutantes will likely be a favorite for those who love psychedelic rock.

Gal Costa - Gal Costa (1969)
Another featured artist from the Tropicália Ou Panis Et Circenses compilation, Gal Costa released her debut album in 1967, and her follow-up self titled album in 1969. Gal Costa was close friends with both Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso as well as their spouses, and Gal Costa's bossa nova debut Domingo was a close collaboration with Veloso. By the release of Gal Costa we hear more of the impact of Tropicália and psychedelia on her sound. This self titled album features more songs from writers besides Veloso, including songs written by Gilberto Gil, Rosil Cavalcanti, Tom Zé, Roberto Carlos, Erasmo Carlos, Jorge Ben, and Torquato Neto.

Clube Da Esquina - Clube Da Esquina (1972)
The Clube Da Esquina name (Corner Club) refers to a corner of the street where Lô Borges used to live, and Borges and Milton Nascimento played for fun in the 1960s.
“I hope our young people don’t allow themselves to be swept up in this dictatorship business, because they don’t understand what it was like,” said [Milton Nascimento] who was stalked by agents from the notorious department of political and social order as his career took off in the 1960s. “Whenever we were going to release a song we had to send it to them for them to censor.” Eventually, Nascimento’s manager rented an isolated beach house where the musicians were free to compose the record of their lives. “It was wonderful … just us and the waves rolling up to our front door,” said Borges. “We weren’t thinking about selling millions of records or being the next big summer hit. We just wanted to make art.” Nascimento smiled as he recalled how that legendary album was conceived half a century ago, far from the prying eyes of the dictatorship. “It was a record made just by friends … We’d spend all day composing, from the moment we awoke with the fishermen bringing in their nets to the moment we went to bed.”
The cover of the album features a picture of two boys playing in rural Rio de Janeiro by the photographer Carlos da Silva Assunção Filho (also known as Cafi).

Novos Baianos - Acabou Chorare (1972)
By popular demand, Novos Baianos has been added to the rate mix! As suggested by their name, Novos Baianos were founded in the state of Bahia in 1969. During the making of Acabou Chorare, they were mentored by the "Father of Bossa Nova", João Gilberto. The album's title (translated as No More Crying) also came from a story about Gilberto's daughter.
Note: the album has two versions of Preta Pretinha, track 2 which is the full version and track 10 which seems to have been a radio edit. We are only rating the full version of the song.
  1. Brasil Pandeiro
  2. Preta Pretinha

Jorge Ben Jor - A Tábua de Esmeralda (1974)
"I’m not in any movement, no. I think movements adopted me."
Jorge Ben Jor is the first recorded artist of the five here, but A Tábua De Esmeralda is chronologically our latest recorded album of the rate. This one is arguably a concept album; influenced by the Hermetic text "The Emerald Tablet" as well as Jorge's interest in alchemy, and features songs focused on Afro-Brazilian identity such as "Zumbi".

  2. O homem da gravata florida

Rules - PLEASE READ ALL OF THESE BEFORE SUBMITTING YOUR SCORES
Listen to each song and assign each a score between 1 and 10. Decimals are fine, but please refrain from giving decimal scores with more than 1 spot. This is because I'm using a computer program to parse the votes and print everything out (more on that later).
You have to listen to and score every song in the main rate. Otherwise, I will not accept your ballot as it will crash the program (more on that later).
Your scores should NOT be considered confidential as they aren’t. Feel free to shitpost about them in the general discussion threads whenever you feel like it - users over at popheads usually just talk about their averages of the albums and what 11 and 0 they gave (which I will explain on the next bullet point!)
You may give ONE song a 0 and ONE song an 11 in the main rate. Please reserve these for your least favorite and most favorite tracks; excessive sabotage ruins rate results and generally makes things less fun.
You can change your scores at any time! Feel free to PM me at any point after submission before the deadline and I'll be happy to revise them for you.
I am using a computer program that fellow rater letsallpoo designed in order to parse these votes! While this will make things a lot more efficient and reduces errors on my part, this does mean that scores need to be sent in a very specific way. The easiest way to make sure your scores follow the necessary format is to use the pre-prepared link at the top & bottom of this post. PLEASE USE THAT. You can copy and paste it to a notepad file or something and fill in your scores there, but PLEASE use that format to send in your scores.
DO NOT SABOTAGE the rate by giving outrageously low/high scores for the sole purpose of skewing the results, we reserve the right to exclude any ballot we suspect of this. If you're worried your scores could be mistakenly perceived as such, all you need to do is leave comments explaining the reasoning behind them.
Did a lot of copy and pasting here (including the following list of users), so thank you to all the raters of old: vapourlomo; roseisonlineagain; DolphLundgrensArms; R_E_S_I_G_N_E_D; stansymash; ClocktowerMaria; aerocom; themilkeyedmender; greencaptain; Crankeedoo; dirdbub; ThatParanoidPenguin; tedcruzcontrol; kappyko; FuckUpSomeCommasYeah; LazyDayLullaby; SRTViper; Whatsanillinois; NFLFreak98; freav; freeofblasphemy; kvothetyron, RatesNorman; aPenumbra; idontreallycare4; p-u-n-k_girl; luigijon3; WaneLietoc; dream_fighter2018; darjeelingdarkroast; smuckles; PiperIBarelyKnowHer; welcome2thejam; imrlynotonreddit; kvothetyrion; thedoctordances1940; b_o_g_o (of the BogoLomo Rate Collective); MCK_OH; TiltControls; u/chug-a-lug-donna; u/TakeOnMeByA-ha; u/indie_fan_; u/bilbodabag, zenits, saison_Marguerite, and tons of people on popheads.

2024.05.13 22:32 andy_free Pain in left buttocks/hip and foot when standing

Hi everyone,
I'm hoping to get some advice regarding my persistent sciatica issues that have been going on for over two years now. I'm 45 years by the way and generally a fit person (love long hikes in the mountains and cycling).
When standing for a few minutes the pain starts in my left buttocks and hip area and progressively worsens the longer I stand. Eventually, the pain extends down to my left foot, which starts to feel numb and I can no longer walk properly. The pain and numbness quickly go away when I sit down. While sitting or lying down I have no pain, just sometimes a tingling sensation in the left foot.
I did a MRI scan with these results: - S-shaped scoliosis in the lumbar spine with left convexity. - L5/S1: Significant left osteochondrosis, spondylosis, and broad-based disc protrusion. - High-grade foraminal stenosis on the left at L5/S1. - Slight signs of wear and tear and mild irritation of the facet joints at multiple levels.
I tried several treatments in the last three months. I did physical therapy including massages, stretching exercises, and the big 3 exercises (McGill). Massage of the legs seemed to help a bit but, stretching seems to exacerbate my symptoms, even though the therapist recommended it.
My doctor recently suggested a minimally invasive procedure involving a catheter, which would require a two-day hospital stay, but I'm seeking more opinions before proceeding.
Has anyone experienced similar symptoms? What treatments or interventions have worked for you? Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Abnormal MRI findings on neck

For my neck and associated shoulders, arms, and hands to give me so much issue the MRI didn't find much. The doctor says he thinks I might have carpal tunnel causing the symptoms in my arms/hands. He said he was going to order a nerve study to see what it would show. He two hand grabbed my head and proceeded to move it in directions it didn't want to go and I told him that. My neck has felt worse since going and seeing the doctor than it has in a while. He sent me a review but I have not filled it out yet.
After going over the results he read the impression 2 and asked me if I have had cancer.... Not what you want to hear when you go in for a neck consult. I have scheduled another appointment with my ENT since its in my neck/throat (kinda under my ear from what I can tell). I also have a appointment the same week with my PCP at the VA. I have sent them both the MRI results and was thinking they might have me do some labs (nurse at the VA through messaging said fast in case). My wife says not to worry it could be some infection that I am fighting off. I was there for a neck MRI for my spine and she wrote two sentences about that and then a paragraph about my lymph nodes. I know I have felt like shit for over a year and sleep issues only getting 4-5 hours a night on a good night. I recently had a clean colonoscopy and I was half thinking they would find colon cancer when they did that.

2024.05.12 15:30 AnonymousWitchArtist I was denied years ago & am now looking back into applying again. Does anyone with experience mind looking into my pitiful questions?

I have to do alot more research myself by putting more effort into applying for Social Security disability income. I'm not sure at all if this is something I should be applying for or if it's something I could ever get/or help me. I only ever started looking into it first when I hurt myself at an old job that I got fired from. I was fired for poor attendance from prior of my accident at work and after. I am fine with this due to wanting to quit anyways. I didnt think i was reliable anymore. For the first 6 months nobody knew what was wrong with me because it took that long for me to finally get an MRI that showed multiple bulging discs in my cervical spine, which is my neck. I was diagnosed with cervical radiculopathy, neuritis, mild scoliosis, and my MRI shows many other complications. I'm young, about 20 when this happened. My condition is considered mild but I experience moderate to severe pain on a daily basis. What had happened to cause this is I had lifted heavy boxes and hurt my upper back/neck area somehow. I woke up the next day never the same. In intense pain where my right shoulder & neck area was. I couldn't turn or make my head/neck without intense pain, felt like i had knots & was swollen. I went to urgent care the next day & they gave me a cyclobenzaprine prescription for spraining my Thoracic spine, which is all they found on an x-ray/word of symptoms. When I had first hurt myself I couldn't sleep at all except for about 2-3 hours on & off a night. I was suffering miserably & becoming crazy from lack of sleep & pain so intense all I would do is sit & cry. I was unable and still am unable to sleep on my sides. I feel constant burning pain from any physical activity, I can barely lift 20 lbs & was ordered I cannot lift more than that a couple years ago. My neck condition has gotten slowly worse, I've tried everything so far from my pain management clinic. Ive done physical therapy, ive taken epidural & trigger point injections, (which im in the process of taking more after my post op appointment). I've been suffering for about 4 years now. I'll be 24 this year & I know I'm young & not that debilitated, but I'm not the same & i dont think i ever will be. Everything is so much harder to do & accomplish. Forcing myself to work in this miserable pain that's never ending. Constant migraines, brain fog, confusion, weakness, balance issues. Etc. It's all coming on slowly. My whole body hurts. I had a new mri done a month ago that showed my c5,c6, discs pressing on my spinal cord. My whole cervical spine is becoming compressed & slowly herniating over time. Right now my C3, C4, C5, & C6 are pinched/buldging & the C5,C6 are causing central herniation, which I don't know what that exactly means. All I know is I'm not a pain management clinic, which means they are only there to try and manage my pain. That means in the next 10 years I'm scared that I may need to have some type of surgery or emergency surgery on my cervical spine. I am terrified that this is my future at 24 years old. My life has not been the same since I hurt my neck. I really just want someone to help me and listen to me but I don't know where to start. The paperwork to apply for SSDI is crazy difficult. Where can I start again? My PCP is okay with signing the disability paperwork but I'm not sure about my pain clinic. Some see me as a young person so they think I'm fine. I really wish someone could help me. I'm contemplating human euthanasia when I'm 30 if this gets worse.

2024.05.12 02:37 Proof_Cheesecake3925 Seca Prime 5.0 - The Art of War

[First] [Prev]
Most beings think they understand the scale of space-time, they’re wrong. Usually, they barely have a hint of an idea of the scale of their own local system, much less the distance the stars are separated by. The majority of the galactic member species are hundreds to thousands of light years from their nearest neighbors. Only the eighteen species in the core halo were closer than that. The further from the core a species civilization was, the farther they were from anyone else. Earth happened to be thirty thousand light years from the core worlds, and at the opposite side of the galactic core.
The long delay between humanities spread to the stars and their discovery of FTL had led them to master sub-light propulsion and maneuvering. Each colony had built shipyards to construct their own fleets, sharing innovations and developments as quickly as sub light communications would allow. Six centuries after the first interstellar flight to Proxima Centauri humanity discovered worm hole communications, and the pace of their advancement accelerated exponentially.
Upon discovering FTL the humans had retrofitted or rebuilt their entire fleet of military and civilian craft. The practical result was that the Human Federation navy and the Galactic Confederation’s navy were approximately the same size. Humanity had long held that sometime in the future a threat would come, and the old adage, “best to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it,” was something of a guiding principle. And so they had built warships, many, very large warships.
The same tech that was used in the suits the Four wore was taken from the inertial compensation systems in use throughout the human fleet. It enabled human ships to accelerate and change course in ways that would inflict instant lethal acceleration and deceleration forces on any being in them if those systems were not in place. The ion plasma shields they developed to deflect cosmic radiation at near light speed had also proved to be remarkably effective against everything else.

The Xielion swept into the galaxy from above the plane on the outer edge, Teltharus being the first inhabited world they encountered. As reports came back from the outer edge the human and galactic strategists had analyzed the tactics of the Xielion. The surveillance drones reported that their fleet was spread in a two light year arc bowed in the direction of their vector into the galactic plane. The front edge was populated with their capitol ships and support carriers, with the supply craft and infantry carriers trailing behind.
What data they had on the sack of Teltharus was played in holo vids across the Confederation, obligating Confederation officials to send a portion of the fleet to answer. The Xielion had all but crushed that force of three hundred ships. Five escaped, one with the most valuable cargo possible, a captured Xielion troop carrier and its crew.
They were, in essence, spiders; very large eight-legged arthropods. The humans called them, “the spiders from hell.”
Much like the galactic arthropod species, they communicated with clicks, chirps, chemicals, and body language. The galactic intelligence community left translation to the Alkar, the species most like the Xielion, and the interrogation to the humans. To say the galactic intelligence community was surprised at the human’s methods would be putting it very kindly. They were even more surprised at how effective those methods were.
The Xielion were as arrogant and entitled as they could possibly have been, but after a few cycles with their assigned human they would volunteer information as soon as the human entered their cell. The Xielion had come from a death world, but the force of gravity on that world was less than half of Earth’s. A single human could physically overpower a Xielion warrior with a modicum of effort, and in their holding cells on the human worlds the Xielion could barely lift themselves from the floor.
Thier race had arisen in the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy eons ago, and when they had finally exploited everything they could from their home galaxy, they turned their ambitions to the great disc of the Milky Way.
One of the other things most beings can’t grasp is the number of stars there actually are, but the human strategists had. They sent teaser strike forces into the flanks of the Xielion armada, poking at them from every system they passed to try to get them to split their force, and to chase down the persistent attackers. On the worlds the Xielion had occupied the humans had landed disruption forces; specially trained operatives that sabotaged critical facilities and then disappeared. The humans and galactic forces would set traps on uninhabited worlds all along the vector of the Xielion, mining space lanes with cloaked hunter mines and automated missel platforms that mimicked asteroids, and all the time the Xielion bled ships and numbers.

“Okay let’s form up,” Andre said loudly. “I’ve got some updates from my uncle.” He smiled. The SDA, as they called it now, gathered and quieted. They weren't soldiers, but neither was he. Andre had no illusions about his capabilities, as good as they were. His father was in the defense ship building industry, his mother a sociology professor. His mother's brother was a commander in the fleet special forces. His uncle had taken Andre as a kind of surrogate for the son he never had. The Commander had helped the shy young boy become a confident teenager, mostly through training him in self-defense and weapons. They had talked about the tactics of warfare, and at age 14 Andre had received a vintage printed copy of “The Art of War” by Sun Tzu.

: Laying Plans, point eighteen, “All warfare is based on deception.”:

“He’s got some updates on ‘The Garden’.” Andre said, and the students grew very attentive. “He says that things are growing very well, and he may need help this year.”
There was a burst of conversation among his troops that he quieted with a stern look.
“As I was saying, my uncle says he’s very happy that we have been studying gardening for the last two terms.” he smiled broadly. Andre had divided his volunteers into those that could fight, and those that could help. In the last two terms they had developed fighting styles and strategies that built on the capabilities of his troops. Most species were not close to human strength, Liara being the most prominent exception, but several were, and Andre had chosen them and one other for his fighter core. They had trained almost daily for two earth years, and he was very proud of them.
The helpers, under the direction of Susan, had focused on weapons and tactics. The fabricator had again steadfastly refused to make weapons or their parts, so the engineers had to find a way around that particular roadblock. It turned out that the fabricator would produce things it could not find in its database as pieces of a weapon. The railgun pistol that all the fighters had was one result.
Another result was the suits. Susan had an epiphany one brainstorming session, and that led to a development that was now in place across the galactic infantry. She had reasoned that, if the gravity compensation systems of the fleet could be miniaturized to make their suits work, then the shielding technology could too. It had taken the combined efforts of the physics department and the mechanical engineering department, and an entire term, but all the fighters at the academy, and the entirety of the Galactic Infantry, now wore shield suits.
The Very Important People had wanted to drag Susan and the team back to Earth to thank them, but Susan and her friends had politely, but firmly, refused to leave the academy.
Andre continued, “He says, “you will need to do your own gardening this year because the academy gardeners will be needed for the harvest.”
“It’s happening at last,” Keleth rumbled with venom. The enormous bear like being, dressed in his shield suit, had lost more than any of the other students at the academy. To his knowledge there were perhaps a thousand Teltharians not on-world when the Xielion came.
“Teltharus will be avenged,” Liara said from Andre’s side. His second-in-command. She was becoming a force of nature thanks to her human friends giving her a master’s level course in badassery ala human style. He loved it. The faith she now had in her physical abilities had changed her. She carried herself with grace still, but there was an unspoken power in her movements, and a confidence in her manner that made him proud.
“I’m going to ask the provost to let us do the modifications to the facility we’ve been talking about,” Andre told them. “Support, I’d like our weapons ready to deploy in the next few cycles. Fighters, we’re going to double our training time.” He turned to Liara. “We don’t hold back.”
“This one’s Si Fu has taught her well, and continues to,” she said, smiling coyly. “This one and her Si Fu will make certain that those are ready.”
Andre chuckled, “Yeah, yeah we will.”

: Weak points and Strong, Point nine, “O divine art of subtlety and secrecy! Through you we learn to be invisible, through you inaudible; and hence we can hold the enemy's fate in our hands.”:

Twenty cycles later the three light cruisers that normally patrolled near the academy quietly left the system, and Liara summoned her personal ship, the Volar, from Sural. She had, until this point, kept her position in Suralial society a confidence among the humans and a few friends. When her nine-hundred-meter yacht arrived, there was no way to keep the secret.
She had asked Arwen to explain it to the SDA, she was a better choice than her or Jason. They were too close to the situation. Arwen had woven a compelling tale, and when she came to the crucial bit the entire SDA had risen in anger. Liara had been moved deeply by her classmates' show of dedication to her.
“The Dulphan is safe as long as we live,” Keleth had declared, and the rest of the SDA had shouted their agreement.
“When the time comes, this one is allowed a guard,” she said, low and earnestly. “This one would be honored if these would accompany her to Sural, and the fighters to the field.”
“They could not keep us from you,” S’Calor, the eight-armed Nalthean said.
“See, baby,” Jason said as he hugged her. “You may be a trouble magnet, but you’ve also got very devoted friends.”

Maneuvering, point thirty, “Disciplined and calm, to await the appearance of disorder and hubbub amongst the enemy:--this is the art of retaining self-possession.”:
“Tormalriel, you’re up next,” Andre said. They were doing hand to, in this case claw, blade practice. Liara stood in the center of the practice ring with a titanium rod a meter and a half long in her right hand. Susan had produced the weapon after Liara, Arwen, and Andre had explained the rules around weaponry in her upcoming dual with Liara Ah Ang. They were allowed any one weapon that did not shoot a projectile. Knives, swords, whips, clubs, and staffs were all allowed. Andre and Liara had settled on a fight strategy, and the staff was part of it. Arwen and Liara were also working on a separate strategy of their own.
The two-meter-tall hexapod that, to the humans, resembled a locust to an alarming degree, tapped its blade against the shield its suit was generating. “I am ready,” its translation module said.
“Begin,” Liara said as she advanced.
Tormalriel jabbed and slashed at her, and Liara parried with her staff, always complimenting her opponent on style and encouraging them to come at her. Dancing with Jason, which had become one of her favorite things, had also been incorporated into her fighting style. She and Tormalriel wove and dipped around each other as they each sought an advantage in the deadly dance. As with all the SDA, Liara slowly increased the difficulty of her attacks and defenses as that dance went on.
She also talked, a lot.
“You credit the Thorm, Tormalriel,” she said as they parried a thrust from her staff. “Always be ready for the return,” she said as her staff came back around, barely missing thier head as they ducked. “Very good,” she complimented. The Thormian came back up under Liara’s outstretched right arm and staff to slash at her torso, but she wasn’t there. Sensing the feint she had simply collapsed to the floor and rolled away.
“Never stop,” Liara said, as she sprang to her feet and advanced again. The Thormian threw itself at Liara using its back legs to propel itself across the ring. “Excellent,” she encouraged. Using her staff she pushed Tormalriel’s blade into the ground and the Thormian tumbled sideways twice before regaining its feet.
“Well done, Dulphan,” Andre said with a grin, encouraging his own student.
“This one’s SI Fu is kind,” Liara said back, with a smile of her own. “Suspend.”
The Thormian stood from its crouch and approached Liara and Andre. “I nearly had you, Dulphan,” they said.
Liara smiled. “Nearly,” she acknowledged, “Conceal the blade better in your feints, and this one will have a harder time anticipating your next move.”
“This is surveillance one to commander,” a voice said from Andre’s wrist device.
“Commander,” Andre responded.
Background sounds of a commotion preceded the voice. “We have a ship, in bound, from thirty degrees above ecliptic,” the voice said, and Andre could hear the stress in it. “Light cruiser size, three semi cycles out.”
“Liara, marshal the fighters,” Anrde said, and she sped off with Thormian beside her. “Arwen," he called into his wrist.
“Here,” she responded.
“Let’s use plan four,” he said. “You get the non-fighters to their safes, and then meet us at muster.”
“Got it, boss” Arwens voice said.
“Susan,” He continued.
“Yes,” she replied.
“Assemble the weapons team.” he said.
“You want the forge?” Susan asked.
Andre thought for a moment. “Yeah, have it staged and ready.”
“Romeo?” Andre said with a smile.
“Kiss my ass,” Jason’s voice said back.
Andre laughed, and said, “Get up to the Volar, and hide her at Seca Secunde like we talked about.” The SDA commander straightened and pressed the general broadcast tab on his wrist device. “Allright everyone, we’ve practiced, we’ve trained, we’re ready. Hopefully this is nothing, but if the spiders are here, they’re walking into our web.”

: Waging war, point nineteen, “In war, then, let your great object be victory, not lengthy campaigns.”:

2024.05.11 01:04 Houseofti ACDF of C5-C6 Recommended - But looking for suggestions

Hi All!
Some backstory, apologies for the long post!
35yr Female - On and off issues weakness/discomfort with my left arm and leg since 2019. A previous MRI showed the following:
2020 Lumbar Spine
Findings: No evidence of acute compression fracture. Multilevel trace retrolisthesis. Small L5-S1 disc with normal signal intensity likely developmental variant related to somewhat transitional spinal anatomy (L5 appears mildly partially sacralized). Disc heights and signal otherwise essentially intact. Multilevel mild facet joint hypertrophy
Unremarkable conus ends at L1.
L1-2: Unremarkable.
L2-3: Unremarkable.
L3-4: Minimal disc bulge. Minimal spinal canal stenosis. Mild right neural foraminal stenosis.
L4-5: Mild disc bulge slightly greater right. Mild/moderate spinal canal stenosis. Moderate right neural foraminal stenosis. Mild left neural foraminal stenosis.
L5-S1: Trace disc bulge. Mild spinal canal stenosis. No significant neural foraminal stenosis.
2020 Cervical Spine
Findings: No compression fractures. No prevertebral soft tissue swelling. No significant subluxation.
Mild disc space narrowing at the C5-6 level. Reverse lordotic curvature of the cervical spine.
C2/3: Unremarkable.
C3/4: Unremarkable.
C4/5: Minimal diffuse disc bulge.
C5/6: 2 mm broad-based posterior discogenic osteophyte with associated disc bulge. There is a more focal 4 mm left paracentral disc protrusion which indents the left anterior cervical cord. No significant cord edema. Moderate central canal stenosis. Mild bilateral neural foraminal narrowing.
C6/7: Mild posterior discogenic osteophyte.
C7/T1: Unremarkable.
Since 2019, I hadn't really had any severe issues until January 2024. I started having severe burning in both calves and feet; progressed to arms and face. Pins and needles all over my body - and eventually felt like my arms and legs were super heavy. I was initially being treated for Neuropathy and B1 deficiency. I've done a few things on my own and take supplements to help with nerve health. I was eventually sent in for a new set of MRIs and this is what came up:
Cervical MRI (2024) FINDINGS: There is mild reversal of the normal cervical lordosis. The alignment of the cervical spine is anatomic.
Mild degenerative spondylotic changes are present. No acute fracture or aggressive marrow process.
There is mild to moderate discogenic disease at C4-5 and more so at C5-6.
Visualized portions of the brain and the cervical cord are unremarkable. No significant paraspinous soft tissue masses or cyst.
C2-3: No significant disc protrusion, spinal stenosis, or neuroforaminal narrowing
C3-4: No significant disc protrusion, spinal stenosis, or neuroforaminal narrowing
C4-5: Mild focal right paracentral posterior disc protrusion, with mild mass effect upon the right ventral thecal sac and indenting the spinal cord spinal stenosis, but without neuroforaminal narrowing
C5-6: Moderate left paracentral posterior disc protrusion with mass effect upon the left ventral thecal sac and indenting the spinal cord, with mild to moderate spinal stenosis, without neuroforaminal narrowing
C6-7: No significant disc protrusion, spinal stenosis, or neuroforaminal narrowing
C7-T1: No significant disc protrusion, spinal stenosis, or neuroforaminal narrowing
My symptoms have improved a lot since January. Hands and arms no longer feel weak, no longer feel numb from the elbow down. But... I'm still having pins & needle and burning from the knee down for both legs. My right index and pinky finger feel tight and require me to stretch them out frequently. I also have internal tremors around my neck/back area that come up whenever I do too much physically.
My Neurosurgeon is recommending an ACDF of C5-C6; says heck no to a replacement disc after I inquired about it. He said he personally does not like replacements and that he never recommend them. His main concern is paralysis if I don't do the surgery.
I'm waiting to get a copy of my MRI scans; he reviewed them with me over telehealth but the appointment went by so quickly and all he did was tell me about the surgery, what to expect and quickly went over any cons of surgery. He did recommend trying out PT and a cervical traction device if I wanted to; but basically said surgery would be my best option.
My questions are:
Why can't I have a replacement disc instead of Fusion? (I've tried following up with him with questions and he shot them all down)
Since I've been having improvements, should I just skip on surgery and do my best to recover?
For those who had a fusion of C5/C6 how soon before you had to get a second fusion for any adjacent segments?
Am I not understanding my findings and it's more serious than I think?

2024.05.10 18:26 Falcon_X4 Lower back MRI results May 2024

Lower back MRI results May 2024
Hello,
During my time in service, I had gone to base hospital a few times with lower back pain problems. Most that was done was Xray which never showed anything. Immediately After getting out, i filed claim for lower back and denied as expected. Fast forward 15+ years, finally got an MRI done at the VA which shows the results in the pic. Im not really sure what all that means in terms of being able to file a claim and maybe getting rated something this time?? Please advise if anyone has similar MRI results and your rating. The whole claim process is tiring and just don’t want to go through it to get denied again.

Can someone break this down in lamen terms for me
I have been having an increasingly hard time supporting my body weight with my legs without feeling like im going to "collapse" having more wierd pins and needles sensations in hands and feet only with calf fasculations
MRI L spine ----------- Findings:
Counting inferiorly from C2, there are 7 cervical, 12 thoracic, and 5 lumbar type vertebral bodies. Vertebral alignment is normal. Mild straightening of the lumbar lordosis. Vertebral body height is preserved. No suspicious focal marrow replacing lesion.
No evidence of recent fracture. There is loss of intervertebral disc space height and T2 disc signal at L5-S1 with mild associated endplate degenerative changes. More mild scattered endplate degenerative changes seen throughout the lumbar spine, noting multiple levels with tiny endplate Schmorl's nodes. The visualized spinal cord, conus, and cauda equina nerve roots are unremarkable. Conus terminates at the L1-L2 level. Paraspinal soft tissues are unremarkable. LEVEL SPECIFIC FINDINGS:
T12-L1: No significant posterior disc abnormality. No significant spinal canal or neural foraminal
stenosis. L1-2: No significant posterior disc abnormality. No significant spinal canal or neural foraminal
stenosis. L2-3: No significant posterior disc abnormality. No significant spinal canal or neural foraminal
stenosis. L3-4: No significant posterior disc abnormality. No significant spinal canal or neural foraminal
stenosis. L4-5: Mild diffuse disc bulge. Trace facet joint effusions. Mild spinal canal stenosis. Mild bilateral subarticular zone narrowing with crowding of the bilateral L5 nerve roots. No significant neural foraminal stenosis. L5-S1: Mild diffuse disc bulge.
There is a superimposed right subarticulaforaminal disc protrusion, with additional smaller left subarticular protrusion. There is moderate spinal canal stenosis. There is bilateral subarticular zone narrowing with contact and displacement of the bilateral S1 nerve roots. There is moderate right and mild left neural foraminal stenosis.
Conclusion: (PII Redacted). Degenerative changes of the lumbar spine as above, most pronounced at L5-S1. MRI C Spine ------------ Findings: Vertebral alignment is normal. Straightening of the cervical lordosis. Vertebral body height is preserved. No suspicious focal marrow replacing lesion. No evidence of recent fracture. Incidentally noted C6 vertebral body hemangioma. Scattered multilevel discogenic and endplate degenerative changes, most pronounced at C5-C6.
No spinal cord signal abnormality is evident. The visualized portions of the brain are unremarkable. The paraspinal soft tissues are unremarkable. SIGNIFICANT FINDINGS BY LEVEL:
C2-C3: No significant posterior disc abnormality. No significant spinal canal or neural foraminal stenosis. C3-
C4: Mild posterior disc osteophyte complex. Minimal spinal canal stenosis. No significant neural foraminal stenosis.
C4-C5: Mild posterior disc osteophyte complex with a slightly more focal superimposed central component. Mild spinal canal stenosis. No significant neural foraminal stenosis.
C5-C6: Moderate posterior disc osteophyte complex eccentric to the right with a superimposed right subarticular and foraminal disc protrusion. There is moderate spinal canal stenosis with slight flattening of the right aspect of the spinal cord. There is severe right and mild left neural foraminal stenosis. C6-C7: Mild posterior disc ossify complex with a more focal superimposed right paracentral disc protrusion. Mild spinal canal stenosis. Mild right neural foraminal stenosis.
C7-T1: No significant posterior disc abnormality. No significant spinal canal or neural foraminal stenosis. Conclusion: 1. Degenerative changes of the cervical spine, as detailed above. Findings include a right subarticular and foraminal disc protrusion at C5-C6 resulting in severe right-sided neural foraminal stenosis as well as moderate spinal canal stenosis with slight flattening of the right aspect of the spinal cord. Correlation with the patient's symptoms, including laterality, suggested. There is otherwise no high-grade spinal canal or neural foraminal stenosis seen elsewhere in the cervical spine.
Upper Extremity EMG ---------------------------- RESULTS Nerve Conduction Studies Demonstrate: 1. Bilateral median-APB and ulnar-ADM with normal latency, amplitude, and conduction velocities in the compound muscle action potentials (CMAPs).
  1. Bilateral median-D2, ulnar-D5, and radial-snuff box sensory nerve action potentials (SNAPs) noted normal peaked latency, amplitude, and conduction velocities. Concentric Needle EMG Demonstrates: Concentric needle EMG was conducted on multiple muscles: Bilateral deltoid, biceps, triceps, pronator teres, and first dorsal interosseous (FDI). Right flexor carpi radialis was also tested. Need EMG results were as follows: 1. Increased insertional and spontaneous activity, in the form of positive sharp waves and fibrillation potentials, was noted in the right deltoid and biceps. 2. Motor unit action potentials (MUAPs) of large amplitude were noted in the right biceps and deltoid. There were no MUAPs of long duration, and mild evidence of polyphasia.
  2. Slight reduction in recruitment pattern upon activation was noted in the right deltoid, biceps, and triceps.
  3. Normal EMG examination was noted in bilateral pronator teres and FDIs. Normal exam was also noted in right flexor carpi radialis, left deltoid, left triceps, and left bicep. IMPRESSION This is an abnormal study. Specifically, there is electrophysiologic evidence for: 1. Mostly chronic, right sided C5-C6 radiculopathy, with evidence of mild chronic denervation and minimal evidence of active/ongoing denervation. There is no electrophysiologic evidence for compressive mononeuropathy or large fiber polyneuropathy in both arms. There is no electrophysiological evidence of C5-T1 radiculopathy in the left arm, or C7-T1 radiculopathy in the right arm. CLINICAL RECOMMENDATIONS: The patient was instructed to follow up with the referring provider for furth evaluation and management of the noted findings
seems semi normal? just been having wierd sensation

The Forgotten Armada: Unraveling the Mysteries of Farmington's UFO Phenomenon
@ufocurrents
By Anthony F. Sanchez, Author & UFO Researcher For UFO Currents
On a seemingly ordinary morning on March 17, 1950, the small town of Farmington, New Mexico, became the epicenter of an extraordinary event that would challenge our understanding of what lurks beyond the Earth's atmosphere. Between 9:15 a.m. and noon, approximately 3,000 residents witnessed a series of inexplicable aerial phenomena, involving multiple unidentified flying objects (UFOs) that defied conventional explanation.
The series of sightings commenced at 9:15 a.m. with the appearance of about a dozen shiny "saucer-like discs" zipping through the sky. These objects, which hovered above Farmington for about ten minutes before vanishing to the northeast, were just a prelude to the astonishing events that would follow. At 10:30 a.m., a red object, accompanied by three silvery discs, engaged in maneuvers reminiscent of an aerial dogfight. Then, at 11:15 a.m., an overwhelming swarm of 50 to 100 objects was observed by multiple credible witnesses, including former Army Engineer Captain Clayton J. Boddy Jr. and private pilot John Eaton. These objects, described as being twice the size of a B-29 bomber, performed intricate aerial formations at speeds and altitudes that left even seasoned observers bewildered.
Harold F. Thatcher, the director of the Farmington branch of the US Soil Conservation Service, managed to triangulate the flight path of one of these discs, estimating its speed at a staggering 1,000 miles per hour, at altitudes between 15,000 and 20,000 feet. Despite the broad daylight and the presence of numerous reliable witnesses, this event quickly faded from public discourse, as if it never occurred.
As the author of "UFO Highway 2.0," I have delved deeply into the mysteries that shroud the northern New Mexico region, from Farmington to Dulce. This area, notorious for its tales of underground alien bases, UFO sightings, cattle mutilations, and alien abductions, holds a pivotal place in the lore of extraterrestrial research. My explorations suggest that these incidents are not isolated phenomena but are interconnected with activities at locations like Los Alamos National Laboratories and Kirtland Air Force Base, echoing unresolved mysteries as far back as the Roswell incident in 1947.
The Farmington Armada is more than just a fleeting episode in UFO history; it is a significant event that compels us to question the reality of our skies and the truths we are yet to uncover. Through my research and discussions, such as my appearance on Gaia's "Deep Space," it is clear that the narratives surrounding these phenomena are not merely products of folklore but may hold the keys to understanding a broader spectrum of cosmic interaction that has persistently eluded conventional scientific scrutiny.
By revisiting events like the Farmington sightings through contemporary lenses, we can forge a new path in our quest for truth, ensuring that these incidents are remembered and examined, not dismissed into the shadows of history.

40 of the Best 2-Player Board Games of All Time
https://preview.redd.it/azn3l96gt7zc1.jpg?width=1233&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6768be73b3d373243b903e058a1bb29049eec994
See the original post here.
2-player board gaming constitutes a huge part of my hobbyist career, and it is obvious why. Many games are designed exclusively for 2-players, and many more work well at that count. Spanning back millennia with the likes of Chess, Checkers, and Go, 2-player-only games have served as a cornerstone of this hobby. And although I’ve explored and enjoyed this genre for a long time, Bitewing Games has never put out a 2-player-only game… until now.
After two and a half years of hunting, planning, and development, we’re finally ready to unveil our line of two-player-only games. But before we get to that, in celebration of this milestone I’d like to highlight and update my list of the best 2-player board games of all time. I shared my original Top 10 list a whopping 4 years ago, back when Bitewing Games was nothing more than a blog. It’s an old list, but still a pretty solid one. Yet I’ve since had many more encounters with incredible games. So many, in fact, that limiting my list to only 10 feels like a bit of a crime against the genre.
Rather than try to arbitrarily rank one title just barely above another, I’m going to dump my entire list of recommendations on you. I’ll even narrow them down into themed categories so it is easier for you to find your type of 2-player game. Let’s explore the best 2-player games I’ve ever played!

Spicy Brutality

https://preview.redd.it/tzvv643yv7zc1.jpg?width=3046&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=cab8cb48199eed3f04dcd944585d878784f591d9
These are the meanest games on my list. Yet spicy games are also some of the most exciting. Proceed with caution, all ye who enter.
  • Undaunted Series — If you’re looking for a war-game experience that is approachable, quick, and streamlined, then Undaunted is the best in the business. There are several unique experiences in this ongoing series of standalone games. Across the games that I’ve tried, I now have roughly 30 plays. We’ve really enjoyed how Undaunted merges smooth deck building with tense tactical skirmishes across many different scenarios.
  • Radlands — If you’ve ever wished you could try Magic: The Gathering or similar dueling card games but been scared off by the steep barriers to entry, then Radlands might be the answer. Everything is contained in a single small box where players draw from the same deck to play out and command a team of post-apocalyptic fighters. The goal is to take out the enemy’s camps first, and you’ll have plenty of tools at your disposal. Despite the aggressive gameplay, the rules are very easy to get into, making this a breeze to teach and play.
  • Marabunta — One of the newest 2-player designs from the legendary Reiner Knizia is a game of ants, dice, and dry erase markers. Although this one has been billed as a roll and write, it plays nothing like the genre. You feel that the most in how agonizing and cutthroat this game is. Marabunta combines painful “I split, you choose” decisions with cold-blooded area majorities on a shared board. Rarely has a game hurt so good to play.
  • Caesar!: Seize Rome in 20 Minutes! — Designer Paolo Mori has proven himself to be a reliable 2-player game designer across several titles which are on this list, but the first one we’ll cover is Caesar. Don’t be fooled by the cheap production, Caesar is a firecracker of a game. You and your opponent take turns deploying units onto the map, covering the spots that border two different regions. Once a region is completely surrounding by tokens, the player with the most strength wins the region. Yet whoever closes the region (covers the final border space) claims a bonus, so sometimes you even help your rival to finish taking over a battleground. That makes this sound like a nice game, but there are plenty of opportunities to undermine your opponents plans and abilities.
  • The Lord of the Rings: The Confrontation — If you love the idea of Stratego, but perhaps not the execution, then this one is absolutely for you. Reiner Knizia offers his take on Stratego’s experience with a game that is also inspired by the Lord of the Rings trilogy. One player is trying to sneak Frodo all the way to Mordor without him getting captured, and the other player is trying to reclaim the ring or basically take over Middle Earth before the fellowship stops them. Devious bluffing and brutal conflicts abound in this highly revered classic from the Good Doctor Knizia that sadly hasn’t seen a new edition in many years.

Not Too Aggressive

https://preview.redd.it/kpc8ny8zv7zc1.jpg?width=2036&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b48e5678befe9d36ce7cb68224f1be61f8c2b8aa
If the above suggestions seem a little to mean for you or your gaming partner, but you still want a hint of spice in your game, then I highly recommend the following…
  • Lost Cities — This is perhaps Reiner Knizia’s most popular 2-player game ever, and for good reason! Many people have pointed to Lost Cities as the best game to play with your significant other. The decisions you make in this game can still be quite rude, but the key is that your opponent doesn’t know you are being rude. You’ve been holding that green 10 in your hand that they so desperately wanted the entire game… and you never even intended to use it for yourself? That’s Lost Cities for you. The hand management decisions in this game are fantastic. You’ll sweat over which cards to hang on to and which expeditions to commit to.
  • Patchwork — Like Lost Cities, Patchwork is yet another widely recommended 2-player game, and for good reason! It combines the satisfaction of polyomino puzzling with smart economic considerations including time management and a button economy. There is a reason why this one has been endlessly in print for 10 straight years.
  • Jaipur — I don’t think I appreciated Jaipur at first as much as I do now. Admittedly, it presents itself as a generic set collection game of spices and gems and camels. These games are a dime a dozen, right? Yet Jaipur sets itself apart by being so dang perfect and paced. You’ll feel yourself pulled in every direction as you race to meld sets first yet wait to build bigger sets, want to spend your turn doing one thing but feel compelled to do another thing, both curse and covet the camels, and so on.
  • Battle Line / Schotten Totten — It’s hard to mention Knizia’s Lost Cities without also acknowledging Battle Line (aka Schotten Totten). Both of these simple card games are ripe with tough hand management decisions, yet they end up feeling very different on the table. Battle Line is about forming poker-style sets of cards across multiple fields of battle against your opponent. As far as I know, this design kicked off the genre known as “lane battlers,” and it is still one of the very best thanks to its timeless elegance.

Tug of War Trifecta

https://preview.redd.it/yadokauzv7zc1.jpg?width=1650&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=580c598a8f30232065dad443460c84ecf4543cb4
Tug of War is a concept that lends itself nicely to 2-player games — one side pulls against the other. If these back and forth experiences sound appealing to you, then allow me to introduce you to the very best 2-player tug-of-war games.
  • Watergate — Based on the Watergate scandal from American history, this one has been a big hit in the last five years of hobbyist gaming. If you want a taste of Twilight Struggle (a famous but sprawling war game) in a fraction of the time and effort, then Watergate is hands down the best option. Watergate presents a cat and mouse tussle between the corrupt Nixon Administration and the courageous press who are out to expose them. You’ll be competing to drag key evidence onto your end of the tug of war track and throwing down powerful event cards in this slick tactical romp.
  • Royal Visit — While it hasn’t even come close to the popularity and success of Knizia’s other 2-player titles, Royal Visit has proven to be another favorite for my wife and I to get to the table. Royal Visit is the purest Tug of War game of this Trifecta. All you have is 1 track and a hand of cards of four possible suits. On your turn you may only play one suit of card, the suit matches a character on the track, and the more cards you play drags that character closer to your end of the track. It sounds almost too simple to be any good, and by the looks of it some people actually do feel that way, but I find that the functional differences of each character and their cards makes this a surprisingly nuanced game. It’s hidden yet satisfying depth has proven itself to me across our many plays.
  • Biltzkrieg!: World War Two in 20 Minutes — Those of you with a keen eye will notice that this game’s title has a lot in common with Caesar’s full title. That’s because both games are from the same designer and publisher team, and they both share the same idea of putting out a tile that is hidden behind your screen. The difference is that Caesar has a bunch of area majority battles while Blitzkrieg presents a bunch of tug of war tracks. Which is better between the two? That’s difficult to say. Depends on who you ask, really. But I’m more than happy to own and enjoy both. The other notable thing about Blitzkrieg is that it is basically a 2-player version of Paolo Mori’s cult classic game, Dogs of War.

Best Cooperative Games

https://preview.redd.it/7apsgjf0w7zc1.jpg?width=1885&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ca0ee8ab02135a2ef474d326126c3f6750404442
Well we’ve already covered so many games that let you roll up your sleeves and pummel your opponent (or lightly pinch them, in the less aggressive games). Why not take a break and look at some of the best 2-player cooperative games?
  • Sky Team — If you want the latest and greatest hotness in the 2-player-only genre, then Sky Team should be the first place you look. It’s one that I rated highly on my Top 15 Games of 2023 list, and it is one of my wife’s favorite games in recent years. In this airborne thriller, you and your partner play as pilots of a commercial airplane with a mysterious communication problems. You’ll take turns putting out your hidden dice as you try to land the plane without causing a catastrophe. The big hurdle is that you can’t communicate what dice you have or where you want your copilot to put their dice. Sky Team entices you to come back for many more plays thanks to the various modules and scenarios that mix up the challenge.
  • Sail — Sail is another major hit from 2023 where you are also piloting a ship together… only in this case you are trying to avoid the kraken via the medium of trick taking. This one is gorgeously illustrated by Weberson Santiago (one of my favorite board game artists) and also presents a variety of challenging scenarios featuring unique maps.
  • MicroMacro Series — If you, like me, have a certain fondness or nostalgia for Where’s Waldo books, then MicroMacro should be right up your alley. This series of games takes the experience of Where’s Waldo and turns it into a bunch of murder mystery style cases that you and your partner must solve. The weird thing about this huge city map crammed with thousands of details is that it shows events taking place over time. You can follow a person walking down the street, around the corner, and into a building where they shove a victim out a window to their death. Yes, it is somehow both cute and dark.
  • Pandemic: Iberia — I can’t list the best 2-player cooperative games without mentioning the titanic series, Pandemic. Where there are so many versions of this game at this point, I’ll just list one of our favorites — Pandemic: Iberia. You are still racing to cure diseases and contain outbreaks, but here it takes place in Iberia with a few interesting twists such as building a railroad infrastructure to shuttle you around faster.

Best Positional Abstracts

https://preview.redd.it/8wp7ur61w7zc1.jpg?width=3120&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bb348ea8672ea269ccfab8590231571a4c8625b5
There are so many positional abstracts (like Chess) in this world that it becomes increasingly hard for these mostly themeless games to stand out. Move a piece, capture a piece. Advance, retreat. Strike, counterstrike. May the best mind win. Here are my favorites that I have found.
  • Onitama — Onitama is a dead simple abstract strategy game. To win, either capture your opponent’s leader, or move your leader into their leader’s starting space. Easy as that. The thing that makes this game so neat is that your pawn movement is dictated by whatever two movement cards are sitting in front of you. Any time you use a card, it gets rotated over to your opponent for them to be able to use on a future turn. So you end up dictating the future options of your rival. On top of that, Onitiama (and its expansions) provide a large variety movement cards, meaning that no two games will be alike.
  • Project GIPF Series, Tzaar and Yinsh — Back in middle school (or sometime around then) I went through my Chess phase. Learning, exploring, and obsessing over the game as I played it with family members and on digital adaptations. Well some time after that (maybe in high school), I entered a project GIPF phase. Project GIPF is a newer line of games (relative to Chess, at least) that features zero theme but plenty of strategy. I call it a phase, but I only ever got deep into two games in this series: Tzaar and Yinsh. Tzaar forces you decide whether to make yourself stronger or your opponent weaker as you protect your three types of discs and try to wipe out one type of your opponent’s discs. Yinsh has you leaping your rings over a line of tiles, causing them to flip to the opposing player’s color. Once you have a line of five tiles of your color, you discard one of your rings from the board. The first person to discard three of their rings wins. I’ve enjoyed both of these games for how they twist and contort your brain in challenging new ways. If you have a gaming partner that is willing to take the plunge on these dry yet approachable boxes, then you’ll find plenty of strategic depth at their core.
  • Santorini — This one stands out thanks to its verticality and its huge deck of asymmetric god powers. Players are moving their figures around and building up 3-layered structures. The objective is to position your figure on top of a 3-story building in order to win. But if your opponent is in an adjacent space, then they can stop you from reaching the top by capping the building off with a dome top. Once you have dabbled in the core game, then you can add in god abilities which mix up the challenges and opportunities of each play.
  • Hive — Hive (specifically Hive Pocket) might just be the most travel-friendly board game ever. That’s because this one has no board or cards. It simply uses a handful of chunky plastic tiles… meaning you can play this one on virtually any flat-ish surface (including the sandy beach!). The point of Hive is to surround your opponent’s queen bee with tiles. All of the bug tiles move in unique and interesting ways… Grasshoppers can jump over a line of tiles to the opposite side. Beetles can climb on top of (and trap) other tiles. Ants can move anywhere they want (a very powerful bug). But all of the tiles must stay grouped together in one connected hive, so there are ways to block your opponent from moving certain bugs. Despite its simplicity, I feel like I’ve only scratched the surface of Hive.
  • Chess and Go — It would be downright rude to not include Chess and Go, the two ancient titans of the genre, somewhere on this list. So here they are. Give them a play, scratch them off your bucket list, and who knows, maybe you’ll fall deep into their strategic rabbit holes. You wouldn’t be the first to do so.

Best Euro-Abstracts

https://preview.redd.it/78jd2x62w7zc1.jpg?width=3001&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=25c5aa8144ac4255862235a07a87dd27d4ced6e1
What the heck is a Euro-abstract? Beats me. I just heard somebody use the term once and it sounded fitting. My best guess is that a Euro-abstract is different from a standard abstract in that it generally features more modern design elements like points, theme, abilities and/or a pinch of luck.
  • Great Plains — Speaking of Go, there are many excellent modern games inspired by this old classic. Great Plains is one such design. Players are spreading out their figures into valuable territories, seeking to have majority in these point-scoring territories at the end of the game. I find that two key features make Great Plains so… well, great: (1) Players can earn animal abilities that let them break the normal placement restrictions. (2) The map is randomly generated each game. Great Plains is one of my most recent discoveries, yet I’m already in love with it.
  • Mandala — This one is a brilliant little card game where players are seeking to claim the most valuable cards, but the values of the cards and opportunities to earn them are steered entirely by the players throughout the game. All you do is add cards to a middle market or bid cards to your side to try and claim first dibs at the cards in that market. The entire deck is nothing more than six different colors of cards. Yet the depth that unfolds is sneakily satisfying.
  • Patterns — Patterns is branded as a sequel to Mandala, although they don’t share much beyond the scoring system and creators. Actually, all three of the above games come from the same design duo: Trevor Benjamin and Brett J Gilbert. Considering the fact that these games are all only from the last five years, I’m starting to suspect that Trevor and Brett might be the best abstract game designers currently working in the industry. Patterns is phenomenal (another of my top rated games from 2023) due to its layered decisions of tile placement and claiming.
  • Lacuna — I mentioned it in the past, but last year was a great year for 2-player-only games. Sky Team, Sail, Patterns, and Lacuna were all excellent. Lacuna is a tough to categorize because it is so unique, but I lumped it here due to the end of game flower majorities that happen for scoring. You start by using the cylindrical box like a salt shaker to sprinkle out the flower tokens onto a large cloth mat. Then you take turns positioning your pawns between two matching flowers to claim them both. After all pawns are out, the remaining flowers are claimed by the nearest pawns. So there is a refreshing spatial challenge of positioning your pawns in the best places to claim the most important flowers. For how quick and breezy this one is, it is an easy recommendation.
  • Chartae — Chartae has impressed me in a way that no other 2-player game has. It crams a surprisingly rich filler game into a tiny little box. With only 9 tiles, the game packs a surprising punch. Either add a tile to the map or rotate a tile. The winner is the player who has the largest connected territory once the map is complete. Perhaps this isn’t one that you should go out of your way to acquire and play — the end result would likely feel underwhelming relative to the effort invested. But if you appreciate discovering surprising depth beneath absolute simplicity, then Chartae is a great choice.

Best Campaign/Legacy

https://preview.redd.it/d63rdgs2w7zc1.jpg?width=1200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3c4d62c27f574287b2c37e7c90f6872f6ccbf293
If you’re looking for a multi-session gaming experience with your arch nemesis, there are many options out there. But these are two of the best that we have found:
  • Undaunted: Stalingrad — Undaunted: Stalingrad remains my favorite game in the Undaunted series. That is precisely because it is such a great legacy/campaign experience where your troops and environment change across many scenarios. The decisions you make in one battle will have ripple effects throughout the war.
  • My City (and its spinoffs) — Those who enjoy polyomino games owe it to themselves to try My City. Across 24 episodes of evolving rules and challenges, you’ll agonize of the placement of your building tiles as you try to satisfy the various scoring objectives. My City is also one of the more approachable legacy games in existence, and intentionally so. I’ve found it to be a great game for couples or families who want to knock out a play or more each evening for a few weeks. The spinoff games, My City: Roll & Build and My Island, perhaps don’t reach the same heights as the original experience, but they still offer plenty of fun if you are hungry for more.

Skill-based Thrills

https://preview.redd.it/vvs2qgc3w7zc1.jpg?width=1562&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e177b708129b6525e86d602a40817b04c95d7020
Sometimes it’s nice to let your brain take a break and simply challenge your fingers and hands instead. It’s even more satisfying to see your skills improve with enough practice and experience. Here are two games that emphasize skill and physicality over intelligence and scheming.
  • KLASK — KLASK is like miniature air hockey, but even better than the real thing. Or at least I would argue that because KLASK is so dang funny and enjoyable. Using the magnetic pawns that you control beneath the table, the goal is to knock the ball in your opponent’s goal… or stick two magnetic “biscuits” to their pawn… or hope they accidentally “KLASK” (move their pawn into their own goal). If any of those things happen, then you get a point. KLASK never fails to deliver a bombastic and lively experience. This game belongs in every household.
  • Crokinole — The best thing that Canadians ever gave to the world was the game of Crokinole. That’s no slight against Canada — Crokinole is fantastic. Our Crokinole board hangs on our wall like a family heirloom. Usually people who see it assume it is some kind of dartboard. But the moment I pull it off the wall and dump out the discs, they are hooked. Crokinole is one of my most played games in my entire collection thanks to its broad appeal and supreme satisfaction of flicking and ricocheting discs across a slippery board.

I don’t often stray into the ultra-heavy gaming territory, which is why most of the games that I play, talk about, and publish are medium weight or lighter. But it seems like the sweet spot for most hobbyist gamers is in that medium weight territory anyway. These are the games that are generally a bit longer to play, require ten or fifteen more minutes to teacher, and combine multiple mechanisms together. Here are my best recommendations for the hobbyist gamer!
  • Innovation This civilization-themed card game may very well be the best of its class for having a streamlined ruleset with massive and chaotic potential, but it is not for everyone. Innovation is less about outwitting your opponent within an open information playing field and more about wacky opportunism. That means you get plenty of moments of surprise attacks, last-minute scrambles, and tactical lunges. It’s a game that keeps you on your toes from start to finish — the more nimble player will win. But it’s only enjoyable if you are willing to let the craziness sweep you away. It’s only worthwhile if you find endless wordy abilities to be exciting rather than exhausting.
  • Splendor Duel — If Splendor is a bit too simple or light for your tastes, then Splendor Duel might be what you are looking for. Here there are a few more considerations to deal with as you claim gems, earn cards, and build your engine. I love how it cranks up the heat by allowing players to pressure each other on multiple possible victory conditions.
  • Match of the Century — This one is Paolo Mori’s take on a lane battler (like Battle Line) and a pseudo-sibling to Watergate. You’ll be reenacting the chess match of the century by playing a game about chess that isn’t actually chess. By committing cards to each lane and utilizing card powers, you’ll determine who comes out on top during each “match” or round. It is a game about making short-term sacrifices for long-term gains. I dig it!
  • Zamek / Carcassonne The Castle — Carcassonne provides a great 2-player experience on its own, but like Pandemic it has seen many spin-offs due to its popularity. One of those spin-off games is a 2-player-only version designed by the one and only Reiner Knizia that introduces some fantastic features to the Carcassonne system. Players are confined to adding tiles within a wall, and the wall itself functions as a score track with bonus corners that encourage you to stop on them exactly. Subtle changes like these make you think all the harder about where you want to place tiles and when you want to score them. It’s easily my favorite way to play Carcassonne. Unfortunatley, this one is very difficult to obtain (unless you track down a used copy or order Zamek from Poland).
  • 7 Wonders Duel — Based on the big box hit, 7 Wonders, 7 Wonders Duel has the honor of being the second highest rated 2-player-only game on BoardGameGeek. Does that mean it is the second best 2-player-only game ever created? That’s for you to decide. All I know is that it is mega popular and mega fun. Players take turns drafting cards from a pyramid display as they build their civilization and wonders. Like Splendor Duel (both co-designed by Bruno Cathala), it allows you to gun for 3 possible victory objectives and pressure your rival in their weakest categories.

Great at 2, and other counts too!

  • The Quest for El Dorado — How many racing games do you know that are amazing at 2 players? The Quest for El Dorado is yet another Knizia classic that has sold gangbusters, and for good reason. Through building your deck and playing out cards, you’ll race across the different types of terrain. It works so well at 2-players because each player controls 2 explorers that both must reach the finish line in order to win. With infinite map possibilities and oodles of expansion content, El Dorado has been a blast for us every time it hits the table.
  • A Feast for Odin — These next two games are without a doubt the meatiest on my list. Despite the long playtime (usually 2-3 hours when you include setup and teardown), A Feast for Odin is comfort food gaming. You’re given a big board of spaces that demand to be filled with tiles and a huge sandbox of viking-style options for how to acquire those tiles. Just like any good feast, you’ll come away satisfied.
  • Ark Nova — One of the absolute hottest releases of the past decade is undoubtedly Ark Nova. It features its own style of comfort food entertainment by letting you manage and customize your own zoo across a few hours of heavy gaming. The massive deck of cards features a truly wild variety of animals that you will only scratch the surface of with each play.
  • Crokinole — There’s only one game so good that it deserves to be mentioned twice on the same list. Crokinole, baby! I had to include it here as well just because the 2v2 mode is such a riot.
  • Azul — The modern classic, Azul, is probably at its spiciest at 2-players where the hate drafting is most direct. But that’s why I love playing it at 2. Azul brings the goods with a clever, family-weight experience ripe with clackety colorful tiles.
This concludes my list featuring 40 of the best 2-player games I’ve ever played. These titles and my experiences playing them with another person have me into the gamer and publisher that I am today. Today I am thrilled to pay tribute to this genre and continue its legacy with the reveal of Bitewing Games’ new line of 2-player-only games: the Mythos Collection — 2-player games of strategy and mythology. Our goal for this line of games is to recruit the best 2-player game creators in the industry and assemble the most renowned line of 2-player games the world has ever seen. The Mythos Collection is made by and of legends.
To kick off this new line of games, there is no designer we trust more than the world-renowned Reiner Knizia (as the prophesy foretold, this is the year of the Knizia after all). I’m pleased to unveil his newest 2-player games: Iliad and Ichor.

https://www.academia.edu/118736225
Many linguists think that IE adj. in -no- and -mo- all came from *-mno-, derived from nouns in *-m(o)n-. One collection of related ideas (Nikolaev 2021) is, in part:

  1. IIr. nouns in -man- show *CmnV > CmV / CnV by regular sound change (drāghmán- ‘length’, ins. drāghmā́)

  1. whether -m- or -n- appears does not have clear cause (Nikolaev argues against a labial in the root being responsible)

  1. when a m(V)n-stem is the second part of a compound, it becomes mo-stems (kárman- ‘work’, vīrá-karma- ‘whose deeds are manly’)

  1. several of these are seen outside IIr., though not clear in some branches (G. spérma > áspermos ‘seedless’)

  1. it is not regular for the 1st part of a compound to show the same n-loss, but analogy caused it in both (G. akmó-theton ‘anvil post’)

  1. other n-stem words show the same, even when not mVn-, likely analogy or a related sound change (Skt. ukṣán- > mahokṣa- ‘large bull’)

  1. these changes depend on tone: *Cmnó > Cmá / Cná, *Cmno > *Cṃno > Cana (*wésṃno- > Skt. vásana- ‘clothes’, G. éanos)

There are problems with most parts. Though many apparent counterexamples could be due to analogy, they add up. On the whole, the existence of nouns in -o-, -on-, -mon-, -non-, -mo-, -no-, etc., seems likely to be produced by original o-stems that produced derivatives that were n-stems; some happened to contain *-mo-, thus make *-mon-, not the other way around. Just like any other noun, mon-stems might have formed derivatives in *-mno- (a few likely examples below), but saying they are the source of so many words in -no- and -mo- is not reasonable, especially with little evidence and no set of regular changes that can account for all data. Also, -to-, -ton-, -ko-, -kon-, etc., do not seem likely to be produced by original *-T-m(o)n-. That this is both clear and not claimed by proponents of *-mon- > -mo- / -no- removes any theoretical need.

Nikolaev’s examples contain *-imno- > -na- (*praHimán- > Skt. premán- ‘love / affection’, ins. preṇā́), though if *ymno counted *y as a C, it would not matter much. However, since he also has *bhuHmn- > bhū́man- ‘world’, ins. bhūnā́, the timing makes it less likely that these happened at a stage that could be interpreted as *praHimán- = *praHymán-. Also, adj. in -no- and -mo- appear after V’s, both -ino- and -imo exist with no special meaning, and all could come from *-imHo- / *-iHmo- (L. maritimus, opīmus, etc.) with optional *mH > *nH (remember that supposed *Cmno > Cmá / Cná is also not regular, and there is no way to avoid this). Some examples of IE words with -(i)no-:

PIE *peyH1- (Skt. páyate ‘swell’, pī́van- ‘fat’) supposedly created *poH1mo- > L. pōmum ‘fruit’, but instead *poH1imo- is needed, since cognates show both *o: and *o(:)i (the god(esse)s Pōmōna, Pōmōnus,Vestinian Poimun- (Poimunien ‘in Pomonium?’), Umbrian *Pōimōno- > Puemune). This is not likely a result of only this word happening to have an uncommon suffix *-imo-, but that *poH1imo- / *poH1mo- shows that the loss of *-i- was happening at the same time as the loss of *H, leading to either *-oi- or *-oH-. Others in Note (1).

Other objections to each part (keeping in mind that each is not meant to be certain or prove the whole theory wrong by itself):

  1. *Cmno > *Cṃno > Cana does not apply in compounds (*vīrá-karmna- > vīrá-karma-), though this could be due to *vīrá-karmná-, etc., and later simplification

  1. if words like G. áspermos came from a sound change, why would G. have other -Cmno-?; if G. dáknō ‘bite’, dagómenos ‘weak’, dágmnos ‘pitiable’ < *dánk-m(e)nos ‘worn down’ were due to analogy, *-Cmno- > -Cmo- would have to be very early and its presence in many IE would suggest it was of PIE date or immediately after breakup, if regular (this contradicts several other points, also see below)

  1. there are just as many good old-looking examples of n vs. 0 in both parts of compounds; why is one regular and the other not?

  1. there is no reason to think words like Skt. mahokṣa- require a sound change (ukṣán- > *maha-ukṣán- could exist, so there is no preference for the existence of intermediate *maha-ukṣná- > mahokṣa- instead of a rule of grammar changing stems directly); u-, i-, and C-stems often become o-stems in compounds, and o- > i- or yo-stems; whatever the cause, 5 or more sound changes make less sense than suffixes that replace the ending, rather than change it (and analogy might have extended this alternation, even if some were really produced by a sound change to begin with)

  1. there is no evidence that Skt. vásana- ‘clothes’, G. éanos, etc., came from *wésṃno- instead of *wésano-. Though PIE *a is seen as rare or conditioned, many suffixes could be reconstructed with *-(a)no-, with *-a- often lost (like i/0 and u/0 above):

*dH2p-ano-? > G. dapánē ‘expense’
*dH2p-no-? > L. damnum ‘expense/loss/harm’ (not *dapumnum if from *-mno-)

L. daps ‘(sacrificial) feast’, *dapno- > ON tafn ‘sacrifice / sacrificial animal’, Arm. tawn ‘feast / festival’ (likely the same as above, also no evidence for *-m-)

*weranaH2- > Arm. geran ‘timbebeam/log’
*wernaH2 > OIr. fern ‘alder’, Alb. verrë ‘white poplar’
*werno(s)- > G. érnos ‘young sprout’

The most important problem is that comparative evidence shows that *Cmn did not become Cm / Cn at all, at least not directly. If Nikolaev’s stages were real, the changes in *g^h(e)i- > Skt. hinóti ‘urge on / throw’, Arm. jgem ‘throw’, *g^heimon- > Skt. hemán- ‘eagerness’, Av. zaēman- ‘active / awake’, zaēni- ‘eager’, zaēna- ‘*swift / *thrown > *arrow > weapon’, etc., would require *g^heimn-í- = *g^heymn-í- > *g^heyn-í- > zaēni-. However, the words cognate to zaēna-, including loans, show -u- and *-w- in *dzainu > TB tsain ‘arrow’, pl. tsainwa, Arm. zēn ‘weapon/armoharness’, gen. zinu, NP zin ‘saddle’, Kh. *hēwna > *hīwn > hún ‘saddle’. Instead of *-w- appearing from nowhere, *mn > *wn makes the most sense, and fits other optional changes (Celtic *k^Hatu-welH2mon- ‘warleader’ > *-welxǝwon- > British Catuvellauni, Cassivellaunus ‘name of a warleader’, W. Caswallawn / Cadwallawn, Vellaunus ‘a god’, *akamn- ‘stone’ >> L. acaunamarga ‘red marl’, Arm. (2)). If there were, instead, a u-stem *g^heymn-ú- >*zaēnu- with exactly the same meaning as zaēna-, it seems unlikely it would happen to be the only one borrowed into Arm. and TB both, and be unrelated to supposed metathesis in *hēnw- > *hīwn > hún. Loans often show features lost in the donor languages (and Kh. is a Dardic language, a group that retains many archaic features, and is at the periphery, another type that commonly shows otherwise lost features). Another loan from IIr. might be the source of *zaymna > *zaymma > *zymama > Aramaic zǝmāmā ‘reins’, Arabic zimām.

If a u-stem existed here, it would also not be able to account for the same type of change in a word that only sounded the same, with no reason for a u-stem: *g^heimon- ‘winter’ > G. kheimṓn, Av. zaēn-, etc. If IIr. words with -(m/w)-n- are needed in both words pronounced *g^heimon-, a sound change *m > m / *w̃ > w / ũ near n would be the best solution (reasonably, it would be optional based on the data):

*g^heimon-to- > Skt. hemantá-s, *haywanta- > A. haywaán ‘winter’, pl. haywandá, *hyamanda > *yOmOnO > Kh. yomùn, *yawanō > Sh. yṓno

*g^himno- > Skt. himá-s ‘cold / frost / snow’, Kh. hím ‘snow’, Pashayi hīm, *híṽ > *híw̃ > Ba. hiũ, Id. hī̃, Sh. hín, Gurezi hinn, Savi hina, Pj. himma

*dwi-g^himno- ‘2 winters (old)’ > L. bīmus ‘two years (old)’, *dvi-zivn > Wg. düzun-zālǝ ‘heifer in its 3rd year’ (Skt. śatá-hima- ‘100 years old’)

It is easy to see that m and w alternated when separated from n, thus *mn > *mn / *ṽn > nn / mm / etc. (including many cases where *C disappeared and created long V, *himn > *himm > hīm (as in himma where non-final)) should be clear. Turner reconstructs many of these words with *-mn- (even when cognates in Skt. have -m-) or plain *-n-, seeing -n(n)- as analogy (and/or << snih-) but no reasonable analogy could produce all the other variants (or is needed, based on hemantá- ~ haywandá, etc., when no analogy with a word with *-w- is possible). No fully regular set of changes can describe all data, but the basic alternations are clear if unpredictable. Knowing that *-mn- / *-ṽn- existed when seen between V’s shows that this should be expected for *-Cmn- as well, with the outcomes -Cn- / -Cm- matching *-mn- / *-ṽn- > -mm- / -nn- (both apparently optional). Just as much of the variation is clearest in Dardic, it also has many other examples of m / v from all types of *P (3).

The need for nasalized *ṽ in these stages (Whalen 2023) is also seen in words in which *m- > v- in some, but sometimes also -r- vs. -n- in the same, requiring *m-r > *ṽ-r > *v-r̃ / *v-n :

IIr. *mṛgá- ‘game, horned (deer), (large) bird’ > B. mirig ‘deer’, Ba. múgur ‘billy goat’, Kh. mùru ‘female ibex’, Iran. *mǝrǝγa- ‘bird’ > Ps. mǝrγǝ´ / murγǝ´ / marγǝ´

IIr. *mṛg-iska- ‘small bird’ > Iran. *mǝrǝγiška- > Mz. mička ‘sparrow’, NP Arak malič, Hamadan milič, Mj. braγiko
IIr. *mṛg-iska- ‘small bird’ > Iran. *mǝrǝǰiška- > *ṽǝrǝǰiška- > *vǝrǝčšika- > Ni. girišig
*ṽǝrǝǰiška- > *vǝr̃ǝǰiška- > *vǝnǝǰiška- > MP vinǰišk, NP NP gunǰišk, Bl. jinjišk
*ṽǝrǝǰī > *vinji > OKho. biṃji- >> TB *wiñcä- > wiñcaññe ‘of sparrows’

Though these words are kept separate by others, vinǰ- / virǰ- / *mirǰ- / mirg- in ‘sparrow’ when mirg- ‘bird’ exists makes these stages needed Having 3 (at least) separate words that are so similar, with vinj- having no clear origin, seems pointless. Note that *-gi- > -ǰi- is the regular outcome, but as shown by *gWemtu- > Skt. gántu- ‘course/way’, Av. jantu-, analogy could restore or retain K based on cognates (when the relation was clear, thus when *m- > v- no restoration from mirg- ‘bird’).

Notes
(1) Ex. of -i- vs. -0-, showing that -ino- was older than -no-, thus not caused by *-Cmno-:

*peyH1- > Skt. páyate ‘swell’, pī́van- ‘fat’
*poH1imo- > *poH1mo- > L. pōmum ‘fruit’
*poH1imo:n ‘God / Goddess of Fruits’ > Vestinian Poimun-, Umbrian *Pōimōno- > Puemune
*poH1mo:n > L. Pōmōna

*k^oH3no-s > G. kônos ‘(pine-)cone / spinning top? / bullroarer?’, Skt. śāna-s / śāṇa-s ‘whetstone’
*k^oH3inaH2 > *xaino: > ON hein, OE hán ‘whetstone’

*staH2- ‘stand’ >> *staH2-ino- > ON steinn, E. stone, Slavic *staina: > *ste:na: ‘cliff / rock / block’ > R. stená
(meaning ‘hard / strong’ like *staH2ro- > ON stórr ‘big’, Li. storas ‘thick’)

*H1ek^w-iHno- > L. equīnus ‘of horses’
*-in- > Sanskrit aśvin-
*-ino- > OPr aswinan ‘mare's milk’
*-eino- > Li. ašvíenis ‘stallion’

*melH2iHno- > *meHliHno- > Li. mė́lynas ‘blue’
*melH2inHo- > *melH2no- > G. melanós ‘blue-black’

(note that Arm. lusin from *leukisno- is also possible)

*H3opinHo- > H. happina- ‘rich’
*H3opni- > L. omnis ‘every/whole’

*gWlH2ino- > Arm. kałin ‘acorn / hazel nut’
*gWlH2no- > G. bálanos ‘acorn / oak / barnacle’

*pltH2ino- > *hlahin > Arm. layn ‘wide/broad/large’
*pltH2no- > *hlitanos > OIr. lethan ‘wide’, G. plátanos ‘plane tree’

*wedino- > Arm. getin ‘ground/soil’
*wedn- > G. édaphos ‘ground/soil / bottom/base’

*skandulHo- > *sxantułxo- > Arm. pl. sanduł-k` / sandux-k` ‘laddestairs’
*skandulo- > *skandlo- > L. pl. scālae ‘ladder / flight of steps’

*grH2unHo- = *grxunxo- > *gurRunRo > *kurrunko > Arm. kṙunk ‘crane’
*gerH2no- > G. géranos

*H(a)mburHo- > Arm. ambuṙ-k` ‘storm’
*H(a)mbro- > G. ómbros ‘rain(storm)’, Arm. amprop ‘thunder(bolt)’

*pteturo- > *fteturo > *fetturo > Arm. p`etur ‘feather’
*ptetro- > G. pterón, Skt. pátra- / páttra-, pátatra- ‘wing/feather’

G. aírinos ‘of ryegrass/darnel’, Lt. airene ‘ryegrass/darnel’

L. geminī ‘twins’, *yamuna- > Ni. iämüṇa ‘twin’

*Hak^iHnaH- > Cz. osina ‘awn’

*slaHg-isno- > Skt. ślakṣṇá- ‘smooth/slippery/soft’
*slaHg-inHo- > *srakina > *srikana > Ni. sirikana ‘smooth/slippery’, Kv. salkáň

*bhrHg^ó- ‘birch’, *bhrHg^isno- > *frākhisno- in L. frāxinus / *fārk(s)nos > farnus ‘ash’

*HrikinHo- > L. ricinus ‘large vermin of sheep/dogs / tick’
*Hrikinso- > *Hriknso- > *Hrik(n)so- > *ri(n)ksa- > Os. liskä, Skt. likṣā́, A. liiṇṭṣií ‘nit’

(2) mn / wn in Arm.; though Martirosyan says that *-mo:n > *-mun > *-mn > -wn is regular, otherwise *-mon- > -mun-, there are many examples of optionality, both *mn > wn and *wn > m(n) (not counting *-nn > -mn in atamn, etc., if really later than *-mn > -wn):

Iran. *pari-štaH-man- >> Arm. paštawn ‘worship / service’, pl. paštamun-k‘

gełgełem ‘sing beautifully / warble / quiver / vibrate’, geławn ‘song’

*g^heluHno- > G. khelū́nē ‘upper lip’, *g^helumn ‘*ceiling > *dome > *shell’ > G. khélumna ‘tortoise / lyre’, Arm. *jelumn > *jeluwn > jełun ‘palate/ceiling’, gen. *jelwans > jełuan, ins. *jelman-bhi > jełmamb

*Hnomn ‘name’ > *anuwn / *anumn > Arm. anun, EArm. anum (or dissim. *n-n > n-m later?)

*H3oid- > G. oîdos, Arm. aytumn ‘swelling’

*welwu()mn- > L. volūmen ‘roll (of writing) / whirl / wreath’, G. eílūma ‘wrapper’, Arm. gelumn

*jiwn-hayt’ > *jimnayt’ > EArm. Xotorǰur jimEt’ ‘snowblind’ (hayim ‘watch / look at’ >> *hayti- ‘vision’)

(3) a few out of many ex. of IIr. (often Dardic) w > m, m > w, many m from P between V’s, so nasalization must have been optional late

2024.05.07 15:59 daswef2 [RATE ANNOUNCEMENT] Brazil Rate
