Hi All!
My wife and me will leave to the US from Europe for a West Coast Roadtrip and I have a 95% finalised itinerary but if there are any recommended activities that I am missing or if I packed too much in a day, please advise. Campgrounds and all of the activities which need reservations are already reserved. Specialty coffee places and food tips are very welcome, we are not picky at all but love to eat basically anything from Five Guys to gourmet restaurants.
Day 1 - Arrive at 17:30 in San Francisco airport and take our rental car, drive to Pacifica Taco Bell for dinner, shop in Walmart or any other chain for roadtrip groceries and sleep in the Inn at Moss Landing, heading down there on Highway 1
Day 2 - Whale watch with blue ocean whale watching at 9 a.m. Head down to Monterey after that for lunch, check out Carmel by the Sea and because of the road closure at Big Sur head down to our next accomodation in Cambria for the evening
Day 3 - Leave in the morning, check out Hearst Castle and elephant seal watch and San Simeone, coffee at Scout coffee in San Luis Obispo, fast food for lunch, check out Morro Bay and Montana de Oro or Pismo beach and drive to Los Angeles in the evening to the hotel.
Day 4 - Universal Studio in the morning, mainly Harry Potter world and after we are finished there, check out the sunset at Griffith Observatorium and walk to Vista or Los Feliz Cinema to watch a classic movie and if there is time go to a bar for cocktails in the proximity.
Day 5 - Check out Santa Monica Pier, go down to Sports Basement to pick up car camping rentals (inflatable bed, trekking poles, sleeping bag) and drive to Joshua Tree campground for a late afternoon, evening hike and sleep in the campground.
Day 6 - Wake up early and do another hike in the morning, after that drive to Las Vegas hotel. Check out the Strip and then put it all on red in the hotel casino? We have a room in a great hotel so this may be a more relaxing afternoon / day.
Day 7 - Leave LV in the morning and drive through or to Valley of Fire State Park for a little while and arrive in Zion National Park in the afternoon to do a very short hike (Watchman Trail).
Day 8 - Scout Lookout trip and The Narrows in Zion NP in the morning and use the shuttle back, either to the car or if we have time and energy to see the Emerald Pools. Leave late and arrive to our Page accomodation late in the evening
Day 9 - Head to the Horseshoe Bend very early to see the sunrise (it is really close from our airbnb). Booked Antalope Canyon tour for early afternoon. Drive to Grand Canyon Mather campground in the afternoon, if possible catch the sunset there and sleep in the campground.
Day 10 - Start in the morning, hike the South Kaibab trail to Cedar Ridge or Skeleton Point depending on the weather and our energy level. Long drive in the afternoon to Death Valley Furnace Creek campground and arrive there in the evening for sleep and stargazing.
Day 11 - This seems like a really exhausting day but will have a rest day after this. Wake up really early and drive to Sequoia National Park, have a shorter hike (Moro rock trail or eagle viewpoint) and maybe the General Sherman Tree. In the afternoon drive to a hotel in Oakhurst for the night.
Day 12 - Relax in the hotel, maybe check out Bass Lake in the vicinity? If we are not tired, which I think we will be then maybe hike in Yosemite that day, too.
Day 13 - Lower Pines campground reservation, all-day hike. Recommendation for hikes? Sleep in the campground.
Day 14 - Whole day Yosemite. Recommendation for all day hikes? Sleep in the campground.
Day 15 - Multiple options, do not know which would be the best or most viable option:
Day 17 - Alcatraz day tour, more sightseeing in SF, recommendations are welcome. Dinner in State Bird Provisions for our last full day.
Day 18 - Last day, check out of the hotel, drink some coffee and grab some fast food, maybe a very light walk in SF and head to the airport to leave at 4:25 pm.

(Not a teacher) The pickup service at Walmart is a lifesaver for me, as I have bad elbows. Chatting with the associate who put my groceries in my trunk, I learned that she is a licensed, working P.E. teacher. The Walmart is in West VA, but in one of the more prosperous areas of the state; I was sad to hear that she had to make ends meet by taking Walmart shifts. She also was grateful to hear that I considered P.E. a "subject," since apparently it is held in little respect by many.
I loathe the administrative bloat in so many school systems; in my own, I would love to see our overpaid superintendent take a pay cut, and remove the new, >$250,000/year communications position he created. Maybe we should, instead, pay the people who do the work enough that they don't need second jobs at Walmart.
*Edited to change "300,000" to ">250,000." Which is still egregious, especially for someone who's got a job redundant with someone else being paid a bit less then $200,000. Suffice to say that none of these people is having to load groceries during their time off.

 | Frank was adopted end of December with stuck shed that had turned into scale rot and I’m happy to say he’s made a 100% recovery and will live a long and very spoiled life with my bf and I! He was on carpet since he had an open wound from the scale rot and our vet had agreed with us no substrate till he was fully healed. Now that we have the go ahead we want to have him on a safe, and if possible, a good substrate for a bio active tank in the future. Right now he is on a top soil sand (70/30) mix but here in west Canada I’m finding it really had to find a no fertilizer top soil that isn’t 80% wood chips that I end up scooping out. I tired looking at the info here from the mods but it’s 3 years old and comments say it’s out of date, we want what’s best and safest for our Frankie beans so please bless us with your wisdom on substrates! I'm looking for something incredibly soft and easy to sink into...anyone have experience with the Aspen?? Poly & Bark? I can see the brand is also sold at Walmart, Amazon, etc. which gives me pause, but they have a 30 day free return window which is very enticing.

Other sofas I've tested in store & thoughts so far...
- Pottery Barn Dream - super soft and I love the memory foam core...this is my top choice so far. I found the Performance Basketweave Slub in Ivory to be super soft & durable. Never thought I'd like a basketweave, but it looks really clean. I also found the back cushions to be very soft.
- West Elm Modular Harmony - soft, but not as sinkable as I was hoping for. I was worried about the Alabaster color being too creamy, but it's actually gorgeous. It looks really white in natural sunlight. Also tested out the Performance Yarn Dyed Linen Weave and Coastal Linen swatches with water & rubbing - water rolled right off both and rubbing didn't really disturb the fabric.
- West Elm Hampton - I thought I'd love this one...so glad I went to the store to test...not as soft as it looks and not very sinkable. Plus the fabric (the piece had been on the floor for a year) looked dirty and worn. The stock fabric on the website is "White Linen", but there's no fabric specs when you click on it. If you add it to your cart you'll see that it's called "Native Linen", and I couldn't find anything on it with basic Googling. However, I stumbled across a sofa at CB2 with fabric called "Native Linen" in Snow or Natural (I can't remember), but it is a poly linen blend that should be durable with proper upkeep. I assume the WE associates didn't take care of the floor model based on it's appearance.
- CB2 Lumis - This is also soft (I wish it was a bit softer, but maybe I'm being delusional at this point). The back cushions were incredibly soft. Very deep. The stock white fabric wasn't as soft as others I've come across, but it still looks clean. I'd rate this one right behind the PB Dream.
- CB2 Deseo - Gorgeous but not soft. Moved on quickly.

I travel to Florida 2-6 times a year. My surf fishing stomping grounds are from Cocoa Beach south to Key West. Tampa down to Naples and over to Miami through the Everglades, and from Pesacola west to the AL border and east to Panama City.
I usually rent surf rods from MWRs and Outdoor Recreation centers aboard the bases when their opening hours align with my trips.
The bases around here have the same thing but their ODRs are closed Sat and Sun so you have to pick up stuff by Friday and return during the week
I have travel rods that I pack in my carryon that I used for freshwater fishing and other light fishing. I travel light and fast and do not like needing to check my rod tubes or any luggage for that matter.
I'm looking for surf anglers who live along these routes in FL and who already normally(or want to) to fly into/out of San Diego and fish out here.
The idea is to set up a equal or as close to equal as possible system where we can borrow tackle from each other when we come into each other's areas.
I'm only interested in surf rods, surf rod holders...stuff that is not easy to travel with. I travel with my own reels and all other tackle.
I have over 40 rods and reels off all types, salt and freshwater, various rod holders, ghost shrimp pump,bait holders that I can loan in return out here.
If you're in a similar boat and interested PM me.
And for anyone who this doesn't apply to who chooses to reply with a bright idea, I most likely already do those things and more: I buy cheap rods from walmart, offerup, thrift stores and dump or donate them back after. And also have rods hidden in stash spots at a couple undisclosed locations.

They won't open all the self checkouts because they won't pay security to keep an eye on that many lanes. People are walking away from their carts and going home.
In the Soviet system you had lines because product was unavailable, same lines in capitalism but the shelves are stuffed full, the shortage is labor (costs). Greedy oligarchic pigs won't hire people they have to pay. That's what welfare is for!

Let's say a hurricane is heading towards Florida, say around West Palm Beach or Orlando.
If everyone in Florida put out fans, like a standard oscillating or box fan, just one you buy at Walmart for blowing air around the house, all pointed towards East towards the ocean and the hurricane, would that generate enough change in air currents to affect its path?

2024.05.09 03:54 No-Adagio6113 Tips to minimize costs while in school and on loans
I just posted this in a comment but thought it would be good info to share for incoming or new-ish PT students who might be nervous to take out loans and perhaps pay for their cost of living for the first time. Here are some of the things I figured out along the way that I wish I had known going in. These tips are assuming that you are living on your own/with roommates and not with parents, and that you’re likely full time and living mostly on loans.

- Depending on your states requirements, apply for SNAP as soon as you can. Groceries are one of the most expensive costs you’re going to incur on a day to day basis, and having help goes a LONG way. *I’ll qualify this by saying I initially applied under pandemic provisions so some rules may have changed depending on where you live.
- Find someone with a Costco membership and buy a bunch of LED light bulbs, then replace every possible light in your apartment with energy saving bulbs if they don’t come already installed. Energy/electric bills can be your third biggest expense after rent and groceries, so help yourself save as much as possible.
- Along the same lines, look for programs through your energy company for low income discounts, student discounts, etc. AND/OR governmental programs in your area that might give you energy credits to help lower bills. Same with internet/wifi providers, like the affordable connectivity plan that’ll cut your internet bill in half.
- Also along the same lines, if your house/apartment has any east/west facing large windows, sliding door, whatever, look for opaque curtains that you can draw to keep your AC/heat costs down. Especially if you’re going anywhere with a decently hot summefall, it makes a huge difference to keep your house cool without driving costs up
- If you are 26+ and/or don’t have insurance through your parents, either get on your state-provided medicaid/medi-cal or at the very least shop for decent plans on your states marketplace. Oftentimes schools will offer insurance plans that have insanely high premiums under the premise that you can just pay for it all along with your tuition, but a lot of times you’re paying way too much for not great insurance.
- If you are already a semester or more in and know more or less what your schedule/load is like, consider getting a job on campus. I would HIGHLY recommend something like a front desk job where you sit and essentially get paid to study. This isn’t available to everyone and of course, don’t do this until you have a good sense of your program (aka don’t do it immediately coming in) but if you have the bandwidth, 10/10 would recommend.
- Always check Facebook marketplace before going to Amazon/target/walmart. I got a nespresso that was basically new on marketplace for $50 and saved myself $200 on the machine and untold fortunes on buying coffee. Especially if you can get SNAP, you can buy nespresso pods, syrups, milk, etc. for free and make your own bougie drinks on government dime. But this principle goes for almost anything you could need day to day outside of toiletries and personal care items.
- Bonus/personal advice: build yourself a routine that includes decent sleep and regular movement/exercise. PT school is hard, it’s taxing, it’s overwhelming, and it’s very easy to let those things go first but they are arguably the most important way to take care of yourself and keep yourself sane. Don’t just sleep until 15 min before class, actually set yourself a regular time to get up, shower, workout, make coffee, walk your dog, whatever you want your routine to be in order to prioritize some me-time and get yourself ready for your busy days.

 | One week in let’s gooo! I don’t know about you all but I have no plans on going back to loblaws anytime soon unless some changes are made. It’s been easy enough to find everything at either Walmart or giant tiger and I’ve already saved like $60 on my weekly grocery bill. One thing I’m not sure about though is coffee! PC Gourmet West Coast Dark roast has been my go too brand for affordable/decent tasting coffee… does anyone have any recs? I’m getting near the bottom of the container and need a replacement. Took a dotcom today, 10 stops, 28 miles. First 2 are suburbs right near the store, in and out quick. Next 4 are rural, also easy. Next one is a gated community, I dial 0001 for the office like the sign said, tell the lady I have a walmart delivery for xxx west shore trail, she says "please be aware you are on camera and if you don't belong here you could be charged blah blah blah".. whatever, she let's me in. Done with that one and the next one is rural too. One after that is a gated community, has a note saying "do not leave at garage, gate code xxxx", I get there, try it, it doesn't work. At this point I really don't want to return it so I text the customer twice, call probably 3 times on spark and atleast 5 on the call box, nothing. 3 people go in, 2 in car, 1 on foot. One of the car people offered to deliver it for me, which even if I did trust them, I can't even swipe arrived, other car lady ignores me. Guy on foot tells me no and "it's a security concern" GTFO. I try 911 0911 9110, no dice. At that point i just pull to the side and wait for someone to come in, absolutely book it, and follow them in. Got it delivered with a 25min delay smh.. the dotcom ended 10mins from home but like half an hour from any walmart, so still worth not having to make a return. But jeez was I angry after that.
