Hi all! I just had a job interview being a life insurance agent. After the interview the guy offered me a position on the spot. He said I’d just have to get my life insurance/health insurance license for about $187 and that the company would take care of the rest then I could start in person training. Does this sound like a scam? I just want to make sure this is legitimate before I put my own money in as I’m already struggling financially.

To make a long story short I got into a car accident on the day on my final Fall 2023 and had everything documented and sent to my professor, and they harassed me for days as if I was lying, only to see how stupid they looked and let me take my final the last possible day of the semester after trying to have an investigation over my accident. Once i fail the final with a 57, i end up getting a D- by my own professor’s grade calculation (i have it documented in email exactly what he said). So long story short they insinuated I was a liar, looked stupid, gave me my exam, and failed me anyway. That’s whatever though, life goes on.
I end up just retaking the course as I know I could’ve done better, and Spring 2024 i get an A- in the course, just for my academic advisor to say it won’t affect my gpa because i already received a passing grade in the course previously. There was no way this is possible because by the time it was time to pay for classes for Spring 2024 I still had a D-, and it was a prerequisite class so i couldn’t even continue how I wanted without completing that specific course. For a fact my grade was changed after the date they say they can’t do anything further about the grade. Somebody changed my grade in degree works to a passing grade while i was already retaking the course. I asked my academic advisor for the exact date my grade was changed but she is ducking my emails right now it’s been 2 days.
What is a fact is a failed the course. Period. Even the professor said there was nothing he could do, after leaving me no option but to take the final the last day possible because he was going to a job interview out of state. I had 2 professors in the CS department apologize for the way they handled my accident, just to give me no prep time for my final, and fail me anyway.
Now they try to slick give me a passing grade so my A- won’t count, and I was basically taking the class for no reason. You can’t change my grade for a class i’m repeating in the middle of the semester. Especially if when i actually do need it it’s never somehow an option. That is very stupid. This is not a mistake either, i failed the course PERIOD. Something fishy is going on. I don’t know who changed my Grade to a C-, but it’s documented i failed. What should i do about this??

I have been following this sub for a minute and noticed there are a lot of seasoned entrepreneurs with more life experiences than me, and I wanted to get some insights on my situation.
A little background:
I recently liquidated a small business in healthcare (medical lab) that I started in 2019. We had great 2020,2021 and 2022 but due to changing landscape in the health insurance reimbursement, rising costs and reduced business volume 2023 was a difficult year. We closed ( sold the asset to another group) in late 2023.
The sort of good news is I was running a cash-based business- meaning no debt.
I have gained significant operational and management expertise running this lean business despite the failure. I started from ground up with $50k and grew it to over a million gross revenue a year in the good years. I thought at the very least I would be able to get back to employment easily with my experience but after 6 months and multiple interviews, some that looked promising I am stuck with no job, struggling with the loss of my business and digging into my savings ( I have living off saving for a year now)
Before my business venture I was mid level manager in the bio Pharma making $120k-130k. I have masters and doctorate, and jobs were easy to come back for the most part. But it has been tough. I have even considered going back to school to get certification to work in hospitals (CAA), but that is 2 years and I have 2 small children, not to mention I am almost 40.
My question is: How have you moved on an after a failure business venture? Is it hard to get back to employment after running your own business? Am I turning off potential employers by seeming too overqualified? My heart is still in running a small business, but not sure if I can risk my saving without money coming in...any ideas for small business that I can start which will not require 100s of thousands of $$?
At this point I feel stuck and need some advice on how to move forward. I just wanted to vent out and maybe get some insights. Thanks

Hey guys, let's try this again!
I recently posted about offering help with law school applications, but some of the users on here felt I was misrepresenting myself by claiming to be an 'expert.' What I really meant to say was, I worked super hard to get accepted into law school after being rejected at first, and learned a LOT along the way. Since I've gotten into 7 of 8 Ontario law schools, I know a thing or two about the application process, and what the admissions committee likes to see (versus what they don't like to see).
Feel free to PM me if you want some advice, editing of personal statements, etc. I have tons of experience in writing: for professors, for my full-time job, and of course, for the law school applications I submitted. For now, I'll post some of my key strategies below. There is no single magic ingredient that will guarantee an acceptance, it truly does depend on your individual profile and the school you apply to. But there IS a right and wrong way to approach it, and there is a strategy!

1. KEEP GOING. You might have one shitty LSAT score, or one failed attempt at a volunteer gig, but do not give up. Keep searching for strategies - whether that means getting a tutor, connecting with other people who have gotten accepted, researching other volunteer experiences. Just never say to yourself 'okay I failed at XYZ, therefore I can't do anything else.' I literally got rejected from multiple schools when I first applied, but now I'm in at 7. You just have to keep going no matter what your negative thoughts tell you.
   
2. HAVE SOMEONE EDIT YOUR STATEMENT. You might think you're a great writer. Maybe you are. But you need to be writing with a specific tone. Focus on "I" statements: "I did this experience....I learned this....I felt motivated....I achieved XYZ." Keep the focus on you and the impact that you have made. You also want to tailor your statement to suit the specific school and what they offer to show that you're a good match for THEM. There's so much more I can say here but I can only write so much lol.
   
3. STATS ARE IMPORTANT. Some people will say you can get accepted with 'lower' stats and that is still true - but if you have an opportunity to increase your LSAT/GPA, TAKE IT. I wrote the LSAT 4 times in total (I know about different LSAT study programs, schedules, strategies, etc.). As long as the admissions committee sees an upward trend, it does not hurt to keep trying. If you've already graduated from undergrad there's obviously nothing you can do there, but if you haven't, you can consider taking a 5th year to boost your GPA.
   
4. VOLUNTEER EXPERIENCE SHOULD SHOW CLIENT/COMMUNITY SERVICE. The admissions committee wants to see that you can serve other people. They want to see that you can identify a problem (for a person, community, group of people, etc.) and make significant contributions to the solution, over and over again, with actual results. This is literally what being a lawyer is (or really any professional in the client-service industry).
   
5. LEARN HOW TO SPEAK TO PEOPLE. You will need this for interviews (if there are any for your schools, or sometimes admissions will invite you to an interview so they can make their final decision). This is definitely a skill that cannot be learned over night. It's not just about being able to list off what you've done and sound positive. I have a lot more to say about this as well!
   

These are just a FEW things I learned guys. Feel free to PM me if you want more advice. I'd love to include every single thing but this post would be way too long, and the advice will really depend on the specific person and their application profile, strengths, weaknesses, etc.

Should I send this email to a recruiter?
I had an interview for 2 roles with the same company, it seemed to go well and the hiring manager told me I was a top candidate and would be setting up a peer interview. I did the peer interview this week on Tuesday which I also think went ok. I didn’t ask next steps after the peer interview, as it was only the team members and not the hiring manager. I also forgot to ask salary range since we had such a good convo. I haven’t heard back yet but it’s only been 2 days. This seems like a really great fit for me role wise, team wise and company wise. I’m not enjoying my current job so am anxious to find something new.
Do you think it’s appropriate to send this to the recruiter 2 days after the peer interview?

Everytime I’ve sent a follow up, I haven’t gotten the job so I have anxiety about this.

My parents think that i am doing nothing with my life because i hate school and want to work instead. To explain, i got an idea in my head about quitting school, my stepfather always said i had to leave school if i wanted to at 18, and i'm 18 now and want to quit school and im like actually making plans: First of all i have a job i can start at immediatly after i end my school year, second i have the option to do an alternative course where i get paid to learn my job on the work floor for four days a week and go to school for one, third i have the option to go to get a degree eventhough i wont have my highschool diploma. So like i have shit planned out but my parents think i don't, why? I'm absent a lot in school. And yeah maybe im the most disciplined person out there. They think ill never go to work and end up being fired everytime, i don't agree because ive been working full time during breaks and stuff and ive never missed one day of work, i just think its a wild assumption to make from my parents. Also they don't like any job i interview for my parents always react with "what are you gonna do there" or "YOU'RE gonna do that???".
TL;DR my parents think im going no where with my life because i miss a lot of school.

I’ve been applying a lot of campus job recently because I really need money. I interviewed for several of them and I received two response. For job A, I was offered the position right after the interview then I accepted it because I know job B is a long shot (since many people said it’s competitive). But I got offered from job B today. Personally, I prefer job B because it has more money and less workload but I feel bad for rejecting Job A especially the interviewer is such a nice person.

I had an interview for 2 roles with the same company, it seemed to go well and the hiring manager told me I was a top candidate and would be setting up a peer interview. I did the peer interview this week on Tuesday which I also think went ok. I didn’t ask next steps after the peer interview, as it was only the team members and not the hiring manager. I also forgot to ask salary range since we had such a good convo. I haven’t heard back yet but it’s only been 2 days. This seems like a really great fit for me role wise, team wise and company wise. I’m not enjoying my current job so am anxious to find something new.
Do you think it’s appropriate to send this to the recruiter 2 days after the peer interview?

I have recently been accepted into a Master's in political science. After graduating with a Bachelor's degree, I have been looking for jobs the past year in my local and regional governments. I applied for approximately 70 positions the past year and have only had two interviews. I did not get those positions. To be fair some of the positons required 2-6 years of experince which I did not have, some were beginner but those were very competitive with other recent grads. The whole point of getting the job is to get the experience, how else are recent grads suppose to find work? Most of the positions that are for reccent grads have massive applications. Three months ago I applied for an entry level position, someone I knew worked as a hiring manager and I thought they could get me in, turns out that didn't happen as the group they were in preferred someone else. However, they told me that 100 people applied for that postition, 100 people for 1 entry level government job. Mental. I have talked to 3 of my closest friends who are also looking for jobs and two are in the same position as me and one recently got hired in their city council (no room for me I asked) as they had connections with their relatives being in government.
In addition, I have recently moved and have applied to do a Master's in political science in hopes of landing a possible internship through the program. I have gotten into my 3rd and 2nd choice, but did not get into my first choice program (International Affairs). I have accepted my second choice program. My issue is now that I have had time to think about it and reading the syllabus (As the university finally published it) I am starting to lose interest in the program. There are are 3 mandatory courses which I despise dealing with political philosophy and qualitative/quantitative analysis. I am not a fan of either. I prefer contemporary politics with respect to international relations/foreign policy. However, the program itself includes a mandatory internship which could finally help me get a job (since I will finally be having some real-world experience). I am not sure what to do. I could try becoming an English teacher and wait until some opportunity arises with a change in government (elections are next year), or I could do this Master's program and see if I am able to make it through. I am at a crossroads and I am not sure what to do.

Writing this seeking advice to give to someone I know. They were recently rejected (many times) for a job working at a children's hospital as a behavioral health specialist. This person meets all of the qualifications for the position but was routinely rejected after applying and interviewing several times. Finally, they were told (in writing) that they were rejected due to their eyesight (legally blind, but can see enough to get by). Not only were they rejected specifically due to this disability, they weren't even permitted to shadow the position which is typically part of the interview process for all other candidates. The hospital cites the vision deficiency as a liability. No where on the job posting does it say anything about a certain level of vision as being a requirement. My question is 1. Is this even legal? and 2. If this is the treatment they are getting now, what is going to happen when they are finally fully licensed and still not permitted to work due to being labeled a liability?

I applied to a job posting as a revenue agent that someone commented on a previous post of mine a month ago. I just got a call scheduling an interview for Monday, I qualify for GS-7 through GS-11.
Since they took a month to reach out to me and I needed money after leaving public tax I took a job in healthcare in my city as a staff accountant. Hybrid, doing month close procedures and reconciling accounts. Very laid back with hands off managers and great benefits.
It’s been a great working there and everyone I work with has high hopes for me. But I would be dumb not to take the IRS job if I was offered?
Obviously long term the Revenue Agent would be a better position but there are a couple things I’m unsure about:
1) What should I expect working for the IRS at these levels?
2) Is there anything you wish you know before you accepted the offer?
3) If I were to get an offer from the IRS, how would I break it to my current employer that I’m leaving after only being there for a couple of months?
Honestly anything that you have experienced or could be helpful to me would be appreciated.

My "parents" had me in their early 20's and my golden child brother after a few years.
My story isn't something of new or special and since i was 4 i was the classic neglected child in favor of my golden "brother" Carl. I can stay here hours talking about how my "parents" didn't even remembered when my birthday was, the times when they left for vacations and i was relegated at home or the times when my "father" (Dan) tried to lay hands on me and i always give him back all my frustrations and anger issues.
All this mess started when i was 6 and after 2 years that they forgot my birthday, even when i was 5 and told them that it was my birthday, and i clearly asked them why they hated me so much and their answer left me broken until now "you're a disgrace for our family, your mother cheated on me and had you so i convinced myself somehow to keep you" and the "worst" thing is that Dan said this with a very normal tone like it was the most normal thing to say to a 6 year old child. Since than i accepted that my life was this so i started to bully people at school. (Emotionally and physically) When i was 14 i met my bestfriend and even now he is the only person of this fucking world that i trust 100%. (This part is important for later)
My school was a public school and no one ever gave a fuck about me and just punished me with suspention of a few days or post school "detention". So yeah since i was 10 i was a bully but my bestfriend (Tony) was the only one that saw in me the broken guy i was and it's like he is the only one knowing me and understanding me. Coming to my "parents" they too obviously neverg gave a fuck about me, my life, if i was a bully or anything about me and thanks to Tony when i was 15 i started to do part time jobs to save money for my future and in 3 years i had a pretty good amount of money (not that much but enough for me). My "brother" obviously made always things worst by treating me like i was shit, insulting me and treating me like i was some kind of animal but i was way more talller and bigger than him so everytime it was an easy win to make him black eyes, livids and one time 2 broken ribs.
But then finally a few days before my 18th birthday thanks to Tony we "elaborated" my escape from that house and we planned that i would remain to his house since his parents were always away for business trips. I still remember the day before my 18th birthday cause i did everything me and Tony planned. Packed my stuff, left a note on the table in the living room (full of insults, swears and death wishes to my "parents" and "brother"), i put my phone on that table with the letter (i already had a new one with a new number) and then left.
The day after me and Tony went to a bar to celebrate and i just remembered being drunk as shit for the whole day hahahah.
Well 10 years passed by and my life "improved" in this years cause me and Tony started our business and now is going extremely well, i have finally my own house, my own cars and i live alone like i always dreamed. But this are only the good things cause the bad things are way more and still very present in my life and mind. I still hate them all, i hope everyday for their death and i still can't trust anyone or just see the worst in people (obviously Tony a part) but i'm ok with this and would never change.
So my life was going ok when a few days ago before going on to do my job i saw them, my "parents". I hoped many times for their premature death but unfortunetly it never happened and seeing them there where i work just raised my anger and frustrations. I tried to ignore them but they blocked me and started to do all that ugly shit of hugs, kisses, asking me how i was, how my life was going and all this shit for like 20 minutes. I standed there with my fists ready to do what i wanted but seeing me like this unfortunetly made them scared and they started talking about their life, that they were in debt for my "brother" expenses, they absolutely nedeed money and this type of bs. In this time i didn't said a world to them and after they finished i couldn't control it anymore and i started laughing my ass off for like 3 minutes.
After i finished laughing i make my way to enter and before they could anything i instructed the security there to never and for any reason let them in and if they would force their way the only solution was to call the cops. Obviously they tried to go in but cops were involved and they were brought away.
When Tony knew about this shitty situation he was worried that i would had killed them both there on the spot but i assured him that the cops dragged them away. He was a bit confused on my reaction and asked me if i was fine, i told him of course and that day i worked with an energy that i never felt.
So that's all. My laugh was a liberation of everything i went through and their absolutely being idiotic to only think that i could help them anyway forgetting those 18 years of neglect and being treated like shit. Poor fools.
I don't even know why i'm writing this here but according to Tony, since i refuse to do therapy, this space can be a good space where i can write about myself so here i'm.

Wow. I meet the 18 yrs or older criteria for my store, gave a very wide able-to-work time range (13 hours) and said how I could work every day, noted how I was content with the hourly wage listed for the position, gave many situations from my previous job of how I handled adversity... and boom, just thrown in the pile less than 24 hours after my interview.
Maybe it was because I said how I could only be seasonal. Maybe I should have not been honest. Sure, I would probably get blacklisted after quitting at the end of the summer for school, but I would probably be able to get an internship relating to my university degree next summer instead. I will take this as a note for future summer jobs I apply to...

Dear Someone
It's almost surreal. I am addressing this letter to you, yet I have no idea who you are or where you are. It's nearly evening, and I imagine you might be coming from the office, studying for your dream job, or outside your home as you watch kids play, others walk, and just watch this beautiful world unfold. I hope that when we meet, we start to like each other, talk, and look forward to our next meeting. Every moment apart, we feel like we are in our dreams, and when we meet each other, we pinch ourselves and try to console ourselves if it's really happening. I hope, over time, we fall in love with each other with all our perfections and imperfections.
I don't know what will happen after that. To be frank, life is rarely fair, and difficulties bound all of us. However, I know it will take the universe to tear us apart. I would be standing side by side, and we together would be sailing the sea of life, stormy or sunny. I would thus love you unconditionally without any constraints or strings, and the love would be as pure as it could bring someone to tears. I really can't wait to meet you, to care for you more than I do, to share every moment of my life, and to begin being a participant in everything you want me to be, be it late-night movies, going on vacations, or just hearing you rant about how her day had been. I can't wait to see you in bed and think how lucky I am in the world to get someone like her to share her life as you sleep.
I'm just running out of adjectives to describe how our love would be endless and expanding, like the universe we inhabit. It's such a privilege to fall in true love with you, and I can't wait to fall in love with you. One day, I hope, as you wake up from bed and we do breakfast, looking forward to the day, I show you this letter and ask whether you think our love is like what I hoped for in the letter, and you unequivocally say yes, hugging me as we both cry silent tears of joy and comfort.

F42/ 18 years work experience, undergraduate certificate-management, post grad certificate-finance and master degree-international relations.
I live in NYC and after my divorce, I moved and took a job in the neighborhood as an Executive Assistant with a small company, to be near home and school until my kids were old enough. I loved being an EA, the work load was hectic and demanding but I really thrived doing it and so did my Executive. ( I am also an EA, remotely and part time with an out of state organization- they love me so much and are offering me a full time but I am not ready to move to GA.) Youngest turned 7, so now it was time to find a bigger network and more challenging job and fast pace environment. I had my resume revamped by two separate resume writing entities, one of which was recommended through the NYC Dept of Labor (DOL). Sent it out and barely heard back anything and when I did, it was to shut me down.
I applied to no less than 300 jobs, via Indeed, Zip Recruiter and directly to companies via their careers page, keeping records of it all.
For instance, after 43 applications for Senior Exec Asst at a major bank (there were multiple departments requiring SEA and some Executives need 4 EA's) I had been sent rejection emails right away for 42 of those but I landed ONE interview, and they interviewed me to death (something like 5-7 rounds) I always interview very well, as I am very articulate with excellent communication skills and my personality is always a hit with interviewers. I met the entire team, the Hiring Manager was super excited to have me join the team, as were the other EA's and her last step (another interview) was to introduce me to the Executive himself but he was out of the country. I would meet him 'next week.' The leaving SEA said I had the right personality and accolades for the job and I would be perfect. Then, bam! Ghosted. Followed up and here comes the rejection email. I cried, honestly.
My job coach, whom I was working along with via DOL suggested my resume was too strong and I needed to 'dumb down' because I was already more qualified than the managers of most companies and this would be intimidating. I did not agree. I wanted to be compensated for my qualifications and experience. You can't punish me for not going to school and still punish me for going to school. I last did a Leadership Ethics and Corporate Accountability Completion Certificate with Harvard Business School Online, one of those things you do just for knowledge. She wants me to take that off too...It was 6 weeks and ONLINE!!!!!
I finally landed an EA job through an agency with a major transportation company. I am on payroll of the agency, and not the transportation company. The contract would renew annually on a need basis. Not secure but it was about $40k more than last job. This of course has no benefits whatsoever, except 5 sick days per year as mandated by NYC Laws, so high insurance costs are all borne by me. I have applied for in house jobs, and have had amazing interviews with transportation company but here comes rejection emails after the interviews and rejection emails without inviting me to interview. You would think it would be easier to hire me because you don't have to train me. Sigh. 22 applications, rejected straight off the bat.
This week, I applied for EA and Chief of Staff jobs, with pay ranges $120-$180k, I do not have high hopes. I am such a good worker though. Talk about organized, analytical, reliable and creative in thinking...my two current Executives are so pleased with me, as was the last. I had a sick day recently, and my Executive was telling someone, when I am not here, everything falls down.
I decided to seek a part time retail job, for evenings and weekends, (yes, Fidelis health insurance is killing me $650 per month, no vision, no dental and FYI the kids are not included on this plan, did I mention a $4,800 deductible?) I digress. Anyway, they have all rejected me, not one has invited me to interview! Not Target, not Burlington, not Marshalls, not TJ Maxx, etc! Not one interview! My friend at another retail company, where I was about to apply told me I needed to remove everything and leave it at High School Diploma.
WHAT IS GOING ON????
I need to hear from Hiring Managers, Managers, Recruiters and others with my experience.
