I was about to purchase a strat. But the salesmen I had just turned me off of Stratocasters in every way.
First, I had the guitar in my lap and we started discussing necks, then he started touching the guitars neck while it was on my leg in playing position. It felt kind of awkward.
I tried to look past that and made it to the counter to purchase.
Then he’s going through pretzel jar full of whammy bars screwing in and out whammy bars to try and find the one that came stock with it. At this point I’m thinking of how chewed up and cross threaded this is going to be.
And while all this is happening there is another person in the store “testing out” a saxophone and blowing on the horn loud as possible playing the same scale over and over, and I couldn’t even hear a word the salesman was saying.
Finally I asked the salesman where’s the bathroom and slipped out the door.
How do I overcome this sour taste I now have with Stratocasters?

So my current career trajectory is this:
Grad in dec 2019 with CS - 1.2 years at same e-commerce company I interned at (large retail company) - 90k/y wfh, 3/10 cool work (did not enjoy the nature of it), good wlb, NYC - 2 years at small 15 person tech team startup, 120k/y wfh, 8/10 cool work, good wlb, NYC, co workers I consider great friends - 1.5 years currently in the Bay Area, in office expectation, 160k base + 140k stock options, pre-ipo unicorn worth billions, 10/10 cool work - robotics. Definitely was a step up, and the bar is high here. I’ve grown so much as an engineer. My family is super proud. But also: Horrible wlb, borderline inhumane busy busy on call, “always on slack” expectation, generally awful culture, 60 hour weeks.
My old startup just completed a 10M raise and wants me back, and is willing to match my current base + small percentage equity. Their intended endgame is to sell to a larger company so may actually be worth something! Though certainly more of a gamble compared to my current role where we have liquidity events for employees, and the company is generally in hyper growth.
My family, fiancé, and dog are in NYC. I really miss being out there, my friends, having time to myself on weekdays after work + weekends. Vibrant social scene compared to absolutely 0 outside of work friends I have out here. I used to have a lot of hobbies (game dev, art) that I just don’t have the energy for anymore. And I also pay to support my family in NYC (mortgage) in addition to Bay Area rent, which is just killer. If I move back I’ll just be paying for one roof.
I miss my old life a lot (particularly my dog + fiancé, the distance is awful), but I feel like I’d be shooting myself in the foot leaving this hot Bay Area job, in a company with an industry leading reputation. I do like working in robotics, and am hesitant to give this up.
I considered studying for new jobs while at my current one, but given the demands of my current job, it just seems unrealistic. I can’t maintain my basic needs for human connection / downtime / my LDR while working 60 hr weeks and leetcoding. I tried for about a month and it was not pretty (other areas of life / work suffered)
So my current plan is: give my all at my job and make sure my reputation is stellar when I leave, take the old job, move back to NYC, marry my fiancé. I’ll leetcode super casually my entire time while I’m there, as the WLB will be better, and then if the startup starts to go south I will interview only for NYC or remote roles. Sadly, I may have to say goodbye to robotics, as I don’t think many jobs will be either remote or available in NYC, but I think this is something i can live with. Tons of other cool fields out there!
Anyone have any advice here / been through a similar crossroads? Will it be a red flag to future big tech companies that I left my reputable Bay Area job after a year and change, if I apply again in the future?

 | Found in the shed where my work keeps back stock of certain items. Was right on top of one of the plastic bins. Had to grab the bin off a tall shelf and almost didn't see it. Have a magic keyboard for the ipad pro 12.9 inch. For 4 years no problem at all with the keyboard still works but the space bar has fallen off and would rather just get a key replacment than a whole new keyboard. Spacers don't line up precisely but good enough. Farsports 50mm wheels tubeless ready (no holes in rim bed) and SRAM centerline rotors (no problems with the stock SLR 1's, just had an extra wheelset). Swapped out RD to Force (long story). Prologo Zero II PAS saddle. Vittoria N.ext 28mm tires tubeless at 60 psi. This is my second Propel, the other is a 2014 which is feels faster to me probably due to the hidden rim brakes. |

Interest rates on the ten-year U.S. treasury were also a big story this past week as they were all over the place. At one point this past week, they were down 37-basis points from their recent high of 4.67% that they hit just last week. Bad news on the economy provided the rate-cut that Elizabeth Warren is screaming at Jerome Powell about. Unfortunately, they closed at 4.43% on Friday after a better-than-expected jobs report. OPEC+ seems to be for Biden as they announced a phaseout of their production cuts before this year’s presidential election. Barring some unforeseen circumstances, this should keep gas prices low and help Biden’s overall ratings. I would also pencil in a rate cut before the election by Jerome Powell. That is if he wants to keep his job. Lilly has been hitting new highs this past week. The company should get a decision from the FDA on Monday on their Alzheimer’s drug candidate. That would be icing on the cake for the big weight loss drug company. My son is 21 months old and right in the center of height/weight charts. We did 101 Before One, and he is not a picky eater. We offer him well rounded meals with fruit, veg, carbs and protein. He's in a phase now where he will graze, leaving the table several times and coming back to grab bites over the course of 30-45 minutes. We have breakfast at 7, snack at 10, lunch at noon, snack at 3, and dinner at 6:30. It's been this way since he started solids. I have a low shelf in the pantry stocked with pouches, fruit bars, crackers and Bunny Grahams and yogurt drops. He can access the kitchen counter where I keep fresh fruit. And at his level in the fridge are cheese cubes, turkey, and berries. We also have a hydroponic garden with tomatoes, sweet peppers, and lettuces. He drinks water and whole milk. On to the problem (is it a problem?) - this kid always wants snacks. He'll stop playing to run to the pantry for a food bar, or eat two bananas and a handful of raspberries and a slice of cheese and still yell for more food. It's constant! Is this just what toddlers do? How are you enforcing meal schedules, or should he just be free to eat whatever whenever? Help! 😭

I have been having trouble with my 03 astro van front drivers suspension sagging down.
Its is AWD with a torsion bar setup. I have attempted to raise it back up with the torsion adjustment bolt but it always sags back down over a couple weeks, even if I don't drive it.
I have tried replacing the lower control arm which gave me new bushings and ball joint. I also had to replace the torsion bar at the same time as I destroyed the old one taking it out. But I am still seeing the same behavior over time.
Interestedly, when I raise the driver's' side with the bolt the passenger side comes up by nearly the same amount, making it impossible to get the two sides leveled out. Almost as though the bulk of the forward weight is on the drivers side.
I'm starting to suspect the previous owner may have lifted the leaf spring rear end somehow as it does seem to sit about 2" higher than stock, though nothing looks specifically modified. Is it possible that a botched lift on the rear is shifting too much weight to the drivers side and causing my problems there?
Its not a daily driver and not worth much so I'm just treating it as a learning experience as a shade tree mechanic. Any suggestions?

The hinges don't really have a lubricant however the black bars that connect the doors are greased as well as the sun roof track. How often do these need cleaned and what kind of grease is best used? I work in dusty conditions and the sun roof track gets pretty filthy. Finally question 3: Carpet. I will say the carpet on subarus are pretty straightforward to clean within reason. However I still track in lots of mud onto the carpet. Yes, I can hear you now about the weather tech floor liners. Do not fret I will eventually add them. I used mcguires carpet cleaner with great success but as you can see it's still not quite there. What are your recommendations? Thank you. |

I'm thinking about getting the Thinkpad E16 Gen2, with a few custom upgrades like opting for the AMD Ryzen 7 7735HS as my CPU and going for the aluminium cover, instead of the default plastic one. The main reason I like the Gen2 more than the Gen1, is due to the inclusion of two DDR5 SODIMM slots, not to mention it being a bit newer as well. I'm planning to run Linux on it, and don't want to deal with fractional scaling, so would like to know if the optional display upgrade of 2560 x 1600 would need it or not.
According to this, 2560 x 1600 will scale down perfectly to 1920 x 1200. So does 1920 x 1200 itself need fractional scaling? 1920 x 1200 is the resolution of the default display that comes with the base model, if I can use that without needing fractional scaling then it would be great.
Earlier I used to have this Ideapad Slim 3, with a 15.6 inch display and a standard resolution of 1920 x 1080, however it still ended up needing to have fractional scaling enabled for it to be usable.
I know that the state of fractional scaling on Linux does vary greatly on the desktop environment being used and a bunch of other factors, for instance KDE Plasma handles fractional scaling in a much better way than stock Gnome, which still hasn't even officially started supporting fractional scaling, but it would be the best option for me to avoid displays that need fractional scaling in the first place.

A light-hearted boomer story from my adventures in the BeeWine/Spirits distribution world. Typically, I spend my work days in liquor stores and bars so no shortage of interesting creatures.
Last Friday, I was wrapping up my day at one of the larger liquor stores in my territory and looking for the manager so I could tell her what the weekly order was and ask if she needed anything special. This store always has a diverse clientele, and it's inwalking stumbling distance of a section-8/retirement complex so no shortage of entertainment.
As I approach the counter, an old, disheveled, musty Boomer absently walks in front of me counting the crumbled dollars he withdrew from his ,threadbare, vermillion, flannel shirt. He was clearly doing what I call 'beer math' , "how much Ethyl alcohol can I get per fluid ounce for this amount of money?" The man must have just evolved into that advanced stage of retiree boomer where they are no longer burdened by banal concepts like personal space or personal hygiene.
The boomer walks over to the counter and is cheerfully greeted by a very young female cashier, could not be older than 22-23. The cashier is ostensibly new, but none the less trying to put her best customer service smile on and do her job. Boomer looks past her, eyeing the myriad of 50ml shooters on the wall. It's a tactical decision for him. After a few awkward moments, the Boomer breaks his unflinching gaze and, in a shocking display of humanity, says "you know what? How's about you pick some out for me, sweetheart?" His tone was cajole, but in that strange Boomer way where it's laid on too thick and well, comes off as creepy.
"...what?" she replies.
"Go on, it'll be fun. Dealers choice! I'll take 3" The boomer replies wryly, as if he's making this cashiers day with his charming contribution.
A few moments pass before the cashier turns around and starts looking at the compilation of airplane bottles neatly arranged on the shelves. She scans and then selects a bottle with a burnt umber label, the cap is an off shade of burnished bronze. "Oh! I had this last week at a friends house, its Smirnoff Vanilla & Caramel kissed vodka!" She holds up the cheap plastic bottle to the boomer, a smile beaming across her face.
A wave of revulsion overtakes the boomer and expresses itself as what can only be described as an oral bowl movement. "Bleeehghhhhhhhh!!! Nah sweety, I thought you were going to recommend something GOOD. Just gimme three of those fireballs over there."
The enchantment was broken, as well as the morale of this poor girl who fell into the Boomer trap of "why don't YOU tell me." He paid her for his tall boys of high gravity lager and shooters with greasy singles and an assortment of coins.
I stood there and laughed as he exited the store, the first shooter of fireball already kissing his lips. I looked over at the cashier and shook my head as I guffawed. My professional demeanor dropping, "why the fuck did he even ask you in the first place?!?!"

A few moments pass before the cashier turns around and starts looking at the compilation of airplane bottles neatly arranged on the shelves. She scans and then selects a bottle with a burnt umber label, the cap is an off shade of burnished bronze. "Oh! I had this last week at a friends house, its Smirnoff Vanilla & Caramel kissed vodka!" She holds up the cheap plastic bottle to the boomer, a smile beaming across her face.
A wave of revulsion overtakes the boomer and expresses itself as what can only be described as an oral bowl movement. "Bleeehghhhhhhhh!!! Nah sweety, I thought you were going to recommend something GOOD. Just gimme three of those fireballs over there."
The enchantment was broken, as well as the morale of this poor girl who fell into the Boomer trap of "why don't YOU tell me." He paid her for his tall boys of high gravity lager and shooters with greasy singles and an assortment of coins.
I stood there and laughed as he exited the store, the first shooter of fireball already kissing his lips. I looked over at the cashier and shook my head as I guffawed. My professional demeanor dropping, "why the fuck did he even ask you in the first place?!?!"

As I approach the counter, an old, disheveled, musty Boomer absently walks in front of me counting the crumbled dollars he withdrew from his ,threadbare, vermillion, flannel shirt. He was clearly doing what I call 'beer math' , "how much Ethyl alcohol can I get per fluid ounce for this amount of money?" I am Andover born and bred I absolutely love it, I have so much passion for the town. I’ve lived in south London, warwickshire, south wales, Southampton.
Andover has so much ancient history with the weyhill fair, harrowway trading route and the overall building stock on the high street. It’s a stones throw from stone henge, coombe gibbet, danebury hill fort and Fosbury camp.
Even the more working class council estates such as King Arthur’s, cricketers / river / pilgrims way and around Vigo / Adelaide road have a rich social history with the London overspill story. I have loved popping into pubs like the lardicake and the swallow and listening to landlords and patrons talk of the growth of the town in the 1960’s to accommodate for people from East London. It fascinates me how there’s a west ham badge on the back of the bar at the swallow and you’re just as likely to meet west ham fans with cockney accents in Andover as you are to meet saints fans- especially if you talk to people of a certain age.
Furthermore, it’s cheaper than other areas of Hampshire, on a fast train line to London (only an hour). You have the a303 to get to London or Cornwall, a34 to get to the midlands or south coast and m4 also, to get on towards Bristol and south wales.
Yes it’s not got loads to do but if you scratch below the surface I think there’s a rich cultural and historical identity I have learned to love and embrace.
