Can someone explain the difference?
I’m hoping someone can help…and I’m not sure if antiques is the right group, my apologies. I recently acquired a massive set of flatware with various patterns. Does anyone know the difference between “Oneida Community Stainless” and “Oneidacraft Deluxe Stainless”? They appear to be the exact same pattern but they have different stamps and have clearly different qualities. Thanks!

2024.03.21 20:31 mutedcurmudgeon Flatware On a (Relative) Budget

Recently moved into my own place, I have some old flatware from my parents but need to get a full set so I don't keep running out of forks. My parents had a hell of a time finding new stuff that was like their stuff they bought in the 90s, we hated Oneida and Liberty Tabletop's options when we looked at their samplers. Everything these days just seems too chunky while not feeling as sturdy.
I know vintage stuff is an option, but I'd like to avoid it if I can; I don't like trolling E-Bay or my local thrift shop, but if that's genuinely my best bet it's not out of the question.
I'd like to have 10-20 full sets, I have no need for serving utensils (but it'd be a bonus), and I don't really want to spend more than ~$350 or so. Any suggestions?

Help Me Find: Oneida Flatware Pattern Name & Hopefully Somewhere to Purchase!
Attaching a few images here - Oneida flatware set, 18/10, made in China. I'm trying to help my mom find the pattern name & hopefully where to purchase. She said she got the set about 15ish years ago from an outlet in Vero Beach, FL. It came in a bamboo silverware holder, same as the last pic.
I've looked on Google for more time than I'd like to admit using various search terms hoping to uncover at least a little something. I've looked at images full of flatware patterns that are current and discontinued, my eyes are tired. Oneida's website doesn't have anything, I've reverse Google Image searched the pattern, I've looked on Etsy, and I've looked at a handful of flatware replacement websites. She's been scouring eBay and replacement websites, as well. I'm coming up empty handed here, so either I've completely glossed over it or it really is that difficult to find this??!!
I would appreciate knowing the pattern name, for a start. If anyone has a link to purchase, that would be an even greater help. Appreciate any direction on this one! Thanks!

2024.02.21 02:06 Person_al_ My Great Grandmothers flatware, imprint says Stainless Steel Japan.

My Great Grandmothers flatware, imprint says Stainless Steel Japan.
I have this fork, alone out of my great grandmother’s collection. I would say it was probably bought around the 70’s? I know she often shopped at Brand Names and similar department stores in upstate New York when they were around.
I’ve found the similar Oneida Star Atomic flatware online a bunch, some of which I actually own, but they aren’t quite the same. This fork has only a cursive “D” and Stainless Steel Japan on the back. It also curves upwards at the end, unlike most of the Star atomics I have seen which curve down. I also noticed that compared to the Oneida’s, the starbursts do not have a distinct dot in the middle of them.
I would really love to find more of this fork because it is positively tactile for me and I only have a few utensils that I don’t hate. I’d honestly love to find a whole set, but really the fork is the big one. Thanks in advance for your help.

2024.02.04 01:32 technical_todd I should've listened... shopping for flatware is a nightmare.

So I've been shopping for a new set of flatware for about a month now. I needed a big set (12 places, 60-ish pieces). Of course, my first stop was this subreddit. Lots of recommendations for Liberty Tabletop, but I was just not ready to spend that kind of money. I figured there HAD to be a few good sets out there for a reasonable price. So I researched and researched and read hundreds of reviews for Oneida, Lenox, Mikasa, hell even Ikea. I ordered a set, didn't like the quality, returned it, ordered a different set, rinse and repeat. A lot of sets I avoided because there's pretty clearly something happening with the metal quality in the overseas makes. It also appears that many manufacturers are just not telling people that they're making their knives out of 18/0 to save money. So many horror stories about people having rusty knives after 3 months. This also seems like a relatively recent development. So if you bought a Mikasa set a few years ago, you're probably fine. But if you buy one today... good luck.
Anyway, this is been one of the most painful shopping experiences I've had. I finally broke down and ordered the Annapolis set from Liberty Tabletop. Would've saved a lot of hours I'll never get back if I just went for that in the first place.

2024.02.01 03:03 GracefulGhoul Do I buy a dozen of my favorite forks 😂

I only wanted a few but 4 is $36 so I’m tempted to buy 12 for $58 and be set for life. I own two already and only use one other smaller fork I don’t like as much so I’d be set for life 🤣

2023.11.25 14:23 AchduSchande Is the LDS church headed the way of Oneida?

In 1848, John Humphrey Noyes founded the Oneida Community in Oneida, New York. It was a tight knit community that was based in fringe Christian beliefs popular during The Second Great Awakening, such as communalism, free love, perfectionism, etc.
Although the group never had overwhelming or note worthy numbers in their area (at their greatest, they were just over 300 adherents), they were very financially very successful.
They owned land, were the largest employer in the area, and founded Oneida Limited (a cutlery manufacturer that is now the largest in the U.S. and a world player). They also had companies that manufactured hats, luggage, furniture, game traps, and offered tourist excursions.
By 1881, the community itself had collapsed. But this still left a large financial structure behind. So they converted what was left, their profit making companies, from being part of a religious community to a joint stock company.
Oneida silverware is the last remaining remnant of the community, but still widely known today, being one of the largest manufacturers of flatware.
Although the doctrine may vary, we see the LDS church in a similar predicament with flagging numbers, consolidating wards, all the while growing financially thanks to their investments and properties.
And this is where the title comes in. If the church does collapse or shrink beyond the ability to maintain itself as a religious organization, will we see its financial schemes live on as an LLC, one devoid of its religious origins? Will Farmland Reserve Inc. or Ensign Peak live on as the only remnant of the church?

2023.11.09 13:35 JimBJ9 Bastard Suggestion: John Humphrey Noyes

The Oneida Community is a FASCINATING piece of history.
I just listened to the episodes on Melvil Dewey and learned the term "burned-over district". That's where I grew up and I'd never heard of it. But anyway, half of my family worked at Oneida Limited, which was the major employer of the rural area, whose history stemmed from the Oneida Community. We had all learned "oh yeah, they started off as a bunch of hippies who lived together," but boy howdy, it wasn't until the wikipedia era that the real "holy shit" history became more commonly known. Weird shit happens in the country, man. Anyway, really interesting history. I still have the flatware and cutlery from them that I grew up with.
Gawker did a piece on them, which doesn't appear to be active anymore: https://web.archive.org/web/20230203033301/https://www.gawker.com/inside-the-19th-century-free-love-commune-powered-by-el-1774756002

Anyway, the guy sounds like a real shit.

2023.10.26 17:51 P3for2 I'm thinking I may need to quit

I've been in Vine 30 days. My average spend per day is $94 (ETV at over $2,800). And I'm someone who is usually frugal and rarely buys things except for necessities, because I have expensive taste. But this "deferred payment" on "discounted" things is making me spend a lot more freely than I normally would. And most of the things in my queues have the same ETV as the item. Anyways, I don't get $0 ETV items just for the sake of it. If I don't want it or need it, I don't get it.

EDIT FOR CLARIFICATION:
I'm not buying useless stuff for the sake of shopping. I'm not a shopaholic (I can go years without buying clothes) and I hate clutter (and the endless boxes are starting to really grate on my nerves). These are all either things I need or have wanted for a long time but was waiting for them to go on sale (which is why this "discounted price" is dangerous to me). As mentioned, I have expensive taste. I got 87 items (as of Day 31), so I don't use all 3 requests sometimes. But 25% of that is $40 ETV or over. I do try to vet the items first before requesting, so fortunately for me most of these aren't trash (haven't needed to throw any of it away yet). But they're also more expensive. Unfortunately for me, the ETVs are usually the same as the price of the item. I've only seen it not be the same three times.
For instance, I got a $99 Oneida flatware set ($65 ETV, woohoo!), an $89 queen size air mattress, $45 dinnerware set, two $55 cookware sets (containing different items--which one of the sets turned out to be one of my most favorite purchases EVER; the other one hasn't been opened yet). And I just moved, so I'm replenishing a lot of stuff. But it's still adding up and makes me uncomfortable. Only like maybe 5 of these purchases are frivolous.
I do not get anything that's consumable or goes on the skin, unless it's already a brand name I already know and trust (though I haven't come across any yet). I don't have a pet, so I haven't gotten anything pet-related, and if I did, the consumables/trust thing would still apply to my pet too. Most of the things I'm getting are furnishings, storage, or organizational stuff. Which is also why I want to hit gold, because I want furniture and appliances that I won't be able to get in silver.
I'm thinking I'll hit the 100 items required for gold, then see about taking a break while I wait until evaluation time comes.
