2024.06.09 15:39 boutell New US and Canadian CHAdeMO chargers in May 2024

Here are all of the new US and Canadian CHAdeMO (Leaf fast-charging) stations that rolled out in May, according to the Alternative Fuels Data Center. You can fetch the data yourself here. Feel free to report inaccuracies to the AFDC.
There were 124 new or updated charging stations in May 2024. I don't attempt to count individual CHAdeMO chargepoints because, unfortunately, the AFDC data does not specify how many chargepoints support CHAdeMO, so I don't want to assume too many.
For comparison's sake: in the US, there were 122 "new" (or updated) CHAdeMO stations added in May 2023.
Keep in mind that even EVGo has started to roll out stations where only some of the bays support CHAdeMO. This makes sense given that only Nissan still sells a CHAdeMO pure-battery-electric car in the US, and the newer Nissan Ariya model is CCS. The Mitsubishi Plug-In Hybrid Outlander PHEV also supports CHAdeMO.
Some of these chargepoints will be "refreshes," e.g. the provider replaced them with faster chargers etc. Some may be incorrect. This report is only as good as the Alternative Fuels Data Center data.
If you'd like to know about new chargers along your routes right away, or reading these monthly reports is just frustrating in your state, I've set up a free service that provides email notifications only when new stations actually open. You can sign up at evpov.com. I built it to help EV owners like myself (especially my fellow Leaf owners). You can pick other plug types as well.
For actual trip planning I recommend using PlugShare. This report is mainly useful to understand trends.
If you get a chance, do check out reported new stations near you and add PlugShare reviews, which helps everyone.

2024.06.09 15:32 boutell New US and Canadian CCS chargers in May 2024

Here are all (*) of the new US and Canadian CCS (Level 3 fast-charging) stations that rolled out in May 2024, according to the Department of Energy. You can get the data yourself here.
These chargers are suitable for most new EVs on the market, except for:
  1. Tesla drivers who haven't bought the official CCS adapter yet. Certain older Teslas need additional work done to accept the adapter.
  2. Nissan Leaf owners, owners of the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, and some owners of older cars that also use CHAdeMO. If you drive such a car, see my matching post in .
Some of these chargepoints will be "refreshes," e.g. the provider replaced them with faster chargers etc. Some may be incorrect. This report is only as good as the Alternative Fuels Data Center data.
There were 255 CCS charging stations with a total of 606 chargepoints added or refreshed in May 2024, which is a major uptick in both stations and chargepoints. For comparison, there were only 226 new CCS charging stations in May 2023, with only 421 chargepoints. Things are trending upwards overall.
Some part of this is due to Tesla Magic Dock stations. Previously Tesla didn't report these to the AFDC as CCS, but now they do. And that makes sense because all CCS drivers can use them.
NOTE: most Tesla Superchargers do NOT have magic dock as of this writing (all those shown in this report should have it). I recommend using PlugShare to locate compatible stations for your vehicle.
(*) "What about other Tesla Superchargers? Can't everybody charge with NACS now?"
It's coming for many makes and models, and for newer Ford models as well as a few other manufacturers charging at v3 and v4 Superchargers is already an option with a free adapter from the automakers. GM should release their adapter this year. But since they are not open to all CCS vehicles, this report is not the place for them. Tesla's app provides the best guide to their locations, including locations that work with non-Tesla vehicles.
Other Notes
To streamline this post, multi-chargepoint locations are listed with the number of chargepoints first.
For serious trip planning, I recommend PlugShare. But by all means check out these reported new locations and submit reviews on PlugShare, which makes things better for everyone.
If you'd like to know about new chargers along your routes right away, or just prefer not to check this list monthly when new openings are rare in your area, I've set up a free service that provides email notifications as soon as they open. You can sign up at evpov.com. Or not! I don't really have a business plan here, I built it to help EV owners like myself. PlugShare has a similar feature.

2024.06.09 15:28 marce155 Yet another union generator

Recently, I wanted to finally try building a source generator myself and since we are still waiting for (discriminated) union support in the language, I picked that as a topic.
You can find the package on NuGet and the code on GitHub.
My approach is heavily influenced by the great OneOf library, with more opinonated naming (e.g. AsInt vs AsT0) and source generating without requiring a base class. I am also utilizing generic marker attributes - something I did not find a lot of material about, so my approach there might be a starting point for some other source generators.
Types are defined by creating a readonly partial struct (within a namespace or partial parent type) and putting a Union attribute on it with the desired types:
csharp [Union, NotFound>] public readonly partial struct Foo;
The source generator will then generate (familiar to anyone who knows OneOf):
  • Switch & SwitchAsync
  • Match & MatchAsync
  • IsXX properties
  • AsXX methods
  • Constructors for all types
  • Implicit type conversions (except for interfaces)
  • Equality members
Regarding size, all reference types (if any) are stored in the same field, but for value types, individual fields are created.
This project was an interesting experiment for me, but is not a polished product. I'm posting it here anyway since somebody might want to use it or could find something useful in the code; all MIT licensed, have fun.

The heat and the pressure are on—for our planet, and for one more World War.
Last Week in Collapse: June 2-8, 2024
This is Last Week in Collapse, a weekly newsletter compiling some of the most important, timely, useful, soul-crushing, ironic, stunning, exhausting, or otherwise must-see/can’t-look-away moments in Collapse.
This is the 128th newsletter. You can find the May 26-June edition here if you missed it last week. You can also receive these posts (with images) every Sunday in your email inbox with Substack.
——————————
Bengaluru broke a 133-year rain record by almost 10mm last Sunday, with 111mm (4.37 inches) of rain falling in a single day. In Sri Lanka, some 24,000 people were displaced by recent flooding. A heat wave swept through the southwest United States and northern Mexico. Part of Niger already broke its June temperature record. Parts of New South Wales, Australia broke nighttime temperatures as well; so did the Philippines, and Vietnam. And a heat wave in Greece.
Atmospheric blocking” happens when regions of the atmosphere remain stationary for days or weeks, imposing similar weather on a region for a while. A study released in Nature Communications looked at Svalbard, which is warming faster than the Arctic, which is itself warming faster than most of the rest of the planet. The researchers claim that atmospheric blocking has resulted in warmer & wetter conditions in Svalbard, which is driving its ice loss. “The augmented blocking in the Ural and Scandinavian regions in the future combined with the projected declines in sea ice, and increases in sea surface temperatures and moisture availability, will likely increase the magnitude and frequency of exceptional rainfall incidents similar to the 2016 occurrence, posing further hazards to the population and ecosystems in Svalbard.”
A paywalled study in Nature Climate Change emphasizes “in the absence of a global tipping point there is no safety margin within which permafrost loss would be acceptable.” The summary states that permafrost melt does not have a worldwide tipping point, but rather several local temperature thresholds. Permafrost worldwide is expected to be all melted once global temperature gains hit 5 or 6 °C.
We are currently in the brief neutral period between El Niño and La Niña, expected to begin around August. Meteorologists expect temperatures in the eastern Pacific to decline for between 1 and 3 years—and for stronger Atlantic hurricanes. A 14-page report from the WMO forecasts a particularly wet summer for Central America.
Monsoon storms in Sri Lanka killed 14, mostly by falling trees, though others drowned or were covered by landslides. Texas saw “canteloupe-size hail” fall during a freak tornado; some think it is a record size for the region. Experts say some 23% of Africa’s land has been degraded, by five major factors: 1) invasive species, 2) climate change, including Drought and flooding, 3) resource extraction, 4) deforestation, and 5) pollution, including algal blooms. Poverty, population growth, and resource dependencies have aggravated the problem, says the article.
In Kashmir, a glacier Collapsed, sending three plunging into the ice, one of whom has still not been found. In the Philippines, a volcanic mud landslide swept into a village; volcano alerts were raised to 2 (on a 0-5 scale). Rising sea levels are displacing residents of one of Panama’s islands (pop: ~1,200); others will follow. Greece is gearing up for a fierce wildfire season ahead. And, in a moment of hopeful news, Sweden is banning bottom trawling in its “marine protected areas.”
In the EU, early polling appears to show a “greenlash,”, a backlash to the Green Alliance—and perhaps a loss of some 30% of their 72 current seats in the EU Parliament (705 total). Some blame the “moral superiority complex” of Greens, while others believe it is their lack of compromise on important issues. Farmer protests also damaged Green sentiment; now future sweeping climate reforms will probably have to wait years to get passed, since conservatives are expected to make gains. Most results will emerge within 24 hours of this post.
Worldwide, 39% of environmental journalists have faced threats due to their reporting—according to a 112-page report by the Earth Journalism Network. Most of the threats came to reporters writing about illegal extraction operations.
Roughly 20% of sealife near the surface is expected to face a “triple threat” of climate hazards: extreme heat, oxygen loss and acidification. Some of these species will die in place; others will be forced into progressively smaller living spaces. Most of the danger lies in the northern Pacific. The full study in AGU Advances has more.
The UN Secretary-General announced that we are on the “highway to climate hell.” And we aren’t wearing any seatbelts. The EU Copernicus Programme says last May was the hottest on record. This means the last 12 months were the hottest on record, with each consecutive month setting a new monthly record. Our planet is supposedly on the edge of 1.5 °C temperature increase, but some think we’ve already surpassed it.
The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) released a 27-page report, “Global Annual to Decadal Climate Update 2024-2028,” predicting short-term temperatures exceeding the 1.5 °C mark.
“The global mean near-surface temperature for each year between 2024 and 2028 is predicted to be between 1.1°C and 1.9°C higher than the average over the years 1850-1900. It is likely (80% chance) that global mean near-surface temperature will exceed 1.5°C above the 1850-1900 average levels for at least one year between 2024 and 2028. It is about as likely as not (47%) that the five-year mean will exceed this threshold….Arctic warming over the next five extended winters (November to March), relative to the average of the 1991-2020 period, is predicted to be more than three times as large as the warming in global mean temperature. Predicted precipitation patterns for 2024, relative to the 1991-2020 average, suggest an increased chance of low rainfall over North-East Brazil and an increased chance of wet conditions in the African Sahel, consistent with the warmer-than-usual temperatures in the North Atlantic….
The Yale Center for Environmental Law & Policy released its 2024 Environmental Policy Index, and the 204 pages illustrate the state of sustainability in 180 countries, according to 58 indicators. The document, full of useful graphics and accessible summaries, presents a world in escalating danger of global heating, pollution, and biodiversity loss. It is well worth skimming. These kinds of climate reports usually seem to me like, overall, much more time was spent making them than people spend reading them…
“Only five countries — Estonia, Finland, Greece, Timor-Leste, and the United Kingdom — cut their GHG emissions at the rate needed to reach zero by 2050….After climate change, biodiversity loss has emerged as the most serious and irreversible environmental crisis….As of 2022, aggregated GHG emissions were falling in 60 countries but still rising in 128…. Human activities, namely the combustion of fossil fuels, of which CO2 is an inevitable byproduct, have caused a nearly 50 percent of the increase in CO2 levels in the atmosphere since the industrial revolution, with atmospheric concentration surpassing 426 parts per million in April 2024 — a level higher than at any point in human history….China, the United States, and India are pivotal, accounting for over half of global GHG emissions…China used more cement in two years (2020 and 2021) than the United States did in the entire twentieth century….Air pollution remains the most serious environmental threat to public health. Long-term exposure to fine particulate matter less than 2.5 µm in diameter (PM2.5) caused 7.8 million premature deaths in 2021, close to 12 percent of global deaths…” -selections from the first third of the report
——————————
Mexico saw its first human case of a bird flu strain, H5N2, in a dead man supposedly with no known previous exposure to animals. Two turkey farms got outbreaks in Minnesota, and Iowa’s first dairy farm reported bird flu as well. American health authorities expect H5N1 human cases to rise in the coming weeks. Bird flu was also found in San Francisco last week. Millions of human vaccine doses for bird flu are being prepared for the United States this summer.
Citigroup says the United States is already in a recession, though other institutions disagree. Nevertheless, junk bonds are becoming even more junky, and economists agree that the economy is at least slowing down. Credit card debt is reportedly rising, and the “personal savings rate” has dropped to pre-COVID levels. “America’s debt accumulation over the last seven years is akin to the costs of a world war,” says the article. Cuts to the Federal Reserve interest rate are coming, and the rise of tariffs is unlikely to stop soon. And Europe’s strongest economy, Germany, is not seeing a strong recovery from last year’s recession.
Thousands are starving in Ethiopia’s Tigray region, where Drought and school dropouts have also worsened. Investigators claim in a new report that both sides in the Tigray War committed grave war crimes and “acts of genocide” in the conflict, which ended (on paper, anyway) in November 2022; intercommunal violence continues at a lower intensity.
The American Heart Association released a report projecting the rates of heart illnesses by 2050, and they believe the rate of hypertension among adults will rise from about 51% in 2020 to 61% in 2060. Diabetes rates are expected to jump from about 16% in 2020 to almost 27% in 2050; and obesity rates will expand 17% to over 60%... A number of other heart conditions are expected to worsen as well, though at least high cholesterol rates are expected to decrease.
A 12-page report by Oil Change International says what we all know: most nations are failing to meet climate targets. “Some G7 countries are massively expanding fossil fuel production at home, while others are investing in more fossil fuel infrastructure abroad.” China is, far and away, adding more renewable energy capacity than any other nations on earth, supposedly adding “over 90% of all renewable capacity mentioned in NDCs {nationally determined contributions}” in the 2020s so far.
The U.S. FDA has unanimously recommended a new vaccine be developed to address the JN.1 COVID variant. Vaccine-manufacturers say that a new vaccine could arrive as early as mid-August. A 242-page prepublication report on the long-term dangers of Long COVID, with a view to planning future impacts on Social Security.
“Even individuals with a mild initial course of illness can develop Long COVID with severe health effects….Women are twice as likely as men to experience Long COVID….Long COVID can cause more than 200 symptoms and affects each person differently….There currently is no curative treatment for Long COVID itself. Management of the condition is based on current knowledge about treating the associated health effects and other sequelae….Long COVID symptoms generally improve over time, although preliminary studies suggest that recover can plateau 6-12 months after acute infection. Studies have shown that only 18-22 percent of those who have persistent symptoms at 5-6 months following infection have fully recovered by 1 year. Among those who do not improve, most remain stable, but some worsen.” -selections from the study summary
Germany reported African swine flu in some pigs in the northeast. Monkeypox cases remain in the United States, and at higher rates than last year, despite waning media coverage. And four strains of dengue fever, yes four, are still sweeping through Brazil with no end in sight.
A number of current & former employees at OpenAI are warning of the careless pursuit of dominance of the artificial intelligence arena—and the supposed 70% chance that AI could bring about “doom” for humanity. Some of the computer scientists believe that a general intelligence (AGI) could arrive as soon as 2027—a generation earlier than previous estimates of roughly 2050. "The world isn’t ready, and we aren’t ready," said one dissenting researcher.

The intervention into Haiti is almost ready to go, but gangsters in Haiti have escalated attacks against police in advance of the Kenya-led operation, set to begin in a week or two. “The gangs are just waiting for the Kenyans, they’re just cracking their knuckles and stretching out.…It’s going to be a battle if not a bloodbath of a war, because the gangs are ready,” said one ex-diplomat. A new PM has been installed, Garry Conille, a guy who previously served as PM for 4 about months in 2011-2012. Gangs vying for power control roughly 80% of Port-Au-Prince; will they remain fragmented upon the arrival of an outside coalition, or make an alliance of convenience to oppose police intervention?
Although New Caledonia’s state of emergency has ended, over $1B of damage has been wrought by rioters opposing an expansion of voting rights. Analysts say that the Pacific island’s abundant nickel reserves—essential for France’s renewable energy push—have seen their extraction obstructed by recent events. A curfew remains in place, and social cohesion has been seriously damaged by the protests and the central government’s reactions.
President Biden issued new orders restricting the flow of migrants and asylum-seekers at the Mexico border. At the U.S./Canada border, migrant arrivals have spiked 1000%+ in the last 3 years. Days before the EU election, Portugal instituted stronger controls over immigration. On the Poland/Belarus border, a Polish soldier died, after being stabbed by a migrant from Belarus.
Georgia’s controversial foreign agents bill has been signed into law despite strong protests from the masses. Some call the law a form of Russian hybrid warfare, though Russia contends that allowing foreign media funding functions as a kind of anti-Russian hybrid warfare on its own.
South Korea suspended a military agreement with North Korea over their waste balloons sent into the South. This will result in a more militarized border, outside the DMZ, in the coming months. President Putin is also planning a visit to Pyongyang, which has been long-supplying materiel to Russia for use in Ukraine. A border clash between Chinese and Indian forces took place in their contested mountains—using only sticks and stones.
Conditions in Gaza are said to be “beyond crisis levels” for the 1M+ people who have been displaced from Rafah, as the Israeli advance continues—despite calls from the ICJ to halt the operation. “The sounds, the smells, the everyday life, are horrific and apocalyptic,” said one observer. Killings in the West Bank have now exceeded 500 since October 7, and aid deliveries have sunk 65%+ since the Rafah offensive began. A strike on a school killed 45 people sheltering there, according to Gaza officials. In the coastal settlement of al-Mawasi, where many IDPs moved after the Rafah invasion began, toilets are so scarce that over 4,000 people share a single latrine.
The battlefield is expanding; in some ways, it has always been all-encompassing, and it’s only now that the world is re-learning it. Ukraine has sent soldiers to Syria to fight Wagner Group mercenaries operating in the failed state. Ukraine had earlier intervened in Sudan to combat Russian forces operating in the country. Ukraine also struck an air defense unit inside Russia for the first time, marking another escalation in the War. Russia struck Ukraine’s largest hydroelectric power plant in Dnipro, which is now in “critical condition.” Russia reportedly intends to restart the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant at some point, though international regulators argue that it would be unsafe to turn Europe’s largest nuclear facility online while War still rages around it. Half of Ukraine’s electrical generation has been taken offline. Although weapons are reaching Ukraine’s frontlines, they are not enough to change the tide of the War—and are still outnumbered by Russian soldiers & munitions. Ukraine is also crowd-sourcing 3D-printing drone parts to support their drone fleets—a key part of future modern warfare.
Russia also claims that French military instructors within Ukraine present a lawful military target for Russian forces—and an opportunity to start WWIII. But others believe the flashpoint may come from elsewhere—Taiwan, or the unfolding Israel/Hamas/Hezbollah/Iran conflict, which are intensifying on the Lebanon/Israel border. Russia is also taking over Niger’s uranium reserves, once held by a French corporation. And four Russian sea vessels will be visiting Cuba—but not carrying nuclear weapons.
Around Sudan’s capital, looters, checkpoints, and violence have been established. Several torture chambers have been discovered, and the smell of death hangs in the air of a few neighborhoods, contested by both sides. The number of displaced people is approaching 10M. Russia is supposedly playing both sides to its advantage. “All over Sudan, people are going hungry because they have lost everything, the economy has collapsed, and armed men frequently steal what little aid is available,” said one reporter. The insurgent RSF forces are said to not only be fighting for the future, but fighting over history as well. The National Museum has become a cemetery for RSF fighters. University archives have been burned. And ancient artifacts have been cleared out, sold to mysterious buyers, stashed away in unknown places, or simply destroyed… Other horror stories are still emerging; this article details some of the worst recent tales in the War.
One major NATO supplies provider claims that a decade of arms accumulation is coming, to replenish stockpiles given to Ukraine and in advance of a potential open War between China and whatever western nations decide to participate. China announced its intention to detain vessels moving into its alleged national waters near the Philippines—and presumably to sink those which resist. Ukraine used up six years’ worth of shoulder-fired missiles, like javelins, in just one year. The development of the F-35 will exceed $2T, although the U.S. military is planning on using it less than previously expected. NATO is also planning its rapid-transit troop corridors through Europe to the expected frontlines of a potential open War against Russia.

Methodist Church Celebrates Anniversary

The first Methodist church here begins tonight a three-day celebration in observance of the 70th anniversary of Its first building, shown in the inset. The old church, a marked contrast to the present beautiful stone structure, was located on the site now occupied by the Sturgeon Bay Implement company. After being abandoned for church purposes, it became known as Marquette hall.
The First Methodist Episcopal Church Built Here in 1866.
Building started in 1866
The Methodist church building, the erection of which is being celebrated, was the first in this city. In January, 1866, two lots at the corner of Court and Cottage streets were donated to the congregation by Henry Schuyler, Sr., and the building was started immediately. Although ready for use by fall, it was not until September 3, 1868, that it was dedicated.
Had Tower 100 Feet High
This first church was an imposing structure built somewhat along the lines of Independence hall, although being of frame construction, and had a tower 100 feet high that later had to be cut down about 35 feet. Rev. George Pinney, first resident pastor here, was in charge at the time the church was started, and Rev. H. H. Jones was In charge of the parish at the time of completion.
In those days, pastors usually were assigned only a year to churches, so 26 served here up to the time of the Rev. G. C. Carmichael during whose pastorate, Oct. 1896 to Oct. 1903, the present beautiful native limestone church was built at the corner of St. John and Church streets.
When the congregation moved, the first church became the Marquette hall, a popular place for community gatherings, and it stood until only eight years ago when it was torn down to make way for the Sturgeon Bay Implement building.
During the pastorate of Dr. W. J. Patton, 1922 to 1924, the present church underwent many changes. The basement was excavated larger for the installation of toilets, and a steam heating plant was put in the parsonage to serve also all of the church except the auditorium which had its own furnace.
Improvements in 1929-30
During the pastorate of Rev. Bowden 1929-30, the upstairs rooms of the church were finished off for use by the beginners' and primary departments of the Sunday school, and a smaller heating plant was put in the parsonage, the exchange being made by A.J. Wiest at no additional cost. Two hot air furnaces were installed in the church. Altogether the cost of these improvements amounted to $5,179, and at a rededication service pledges were received to cover a large part of the expense.
Rev. Dittes, during his pastorate, was outstanding for his making an exhaustive religious survey of the city that has been of value to all denominations; and of prime importance in the present pastorate of Rev. Runyon is the organization of the Seventy club, a body of 73 men who are taking the lead in liquidating the church debt. The club has directly contributed $442 to reduce the debt which now stands at $4,365, a reduction of $667 during the past two years.
First Pastor in 1863
Three years before the first church was built, the local congregation had its first pastor. The denomination had had its start, however, with the coming here of A. G. Warren and was enlarged when Paul Nelson came In 1859. A Kewaunee man, Elder William Stevens, came here to conduct services in the C. M. Whiteside residence during the winter of 1863. In the meantime, Gibraltar Mission had been organized by the Rev. R. M. Beach in October, 1862, so as a result of Elder Stevens' work, the Sturgeon Bay circuit was formed in 1863, with the Gibraltar, Fish Creek, Egg Harbor, Baileys Harbor, and the Chambers Island parishes joining together. The Rev. B. M. Fulmer succeeded Rev. Beach in October 1863.
The first quarterly conference was held in July 1863. Presiding Elder M. Himebough had charge. Besides the pastor, Rev. Beach, leaders and committeemen present were Russell Baker, of Egg Harbor, Isaac Jermain, J W. Turner and Perry Graham.

Thursday, June 9, 2005 - Trial Day 70. Jury Deliberations Day 5
Trial Day 70
Jury Deliberations Day 5
Michael will have to wait at least another day before hearing the jury deliver a verdict in his trial. Jurors completed their deliberations early as some reportedly had to attend graduation ceremonies. This marked the end of the fifth day of deliberations with 22 hours being spent behind closed doors in the Santa Maria courthouse.
Fans wait for a verdict
Long-time Jackson friend and civil rights activist, Rev. Jesse Jackson, told CNN that he spent an hour with Michael at a local hospital last night, where he was being treated for recurring back spasms and the Reverend described the singer as
"kind of ebullient"

"I think the pain is subsiding," said Jesse Jackson, "[his] back is getting better."
He said Michael was in "good spirits" and optimistic about an acquittal

For the small town of Santa Maria, nestled amidst hills and strawberry farms in the vast state of California, the Jackson trial has been both a blessing and a bother. The trial of the world’s most famous man has brought unprecedented media attention to the community along with thousands of media personnel and hordes of Jackson’ supporters
Santa Maria police officers stand guard in front of the courthouse
Despite the traffic jams, battles for parking and the inconvenience caused by the constantly moving throng of Jackson’ fans, the 88,000 Santa Maria residents do have reason to rejoice. The trial has credited the city with almost $ 215,000 from hotel bed taxes, rental offices and parking spaces.
For Carmen Jenkins the reward may even be a new BMW. Jenkins, who foresaw the potential for her little coffee shop, expanded her store and menu, making Coffee Diem a hit with the media personnel flocked outside the courthouse

The 46 year old spoke enthusiastically about the influx of visitors:
“ "It's like having a party and inviting someone from every part of the world. It brought so much fresh new air to the city."
But for some the end of the trial will be welcomed. Kathleen DeVoe, 50, said mayhem broke out at the dental office she worked at when Jackson was admitted in February at the nearby Marian Medical Centre for treatment of flu symptoms. She said "the media were extremely rude," nabbing all the spaces in a private parking lot

Others were more diplomatic.
"We're not going to live or die on what happens to him," said Robert Hatch, chief executive officer of the Santa Maria Valley Chamber of Commerce. "But we'll make people feel welcome, so next time they'll come back. For the most part we've done that."
The longer the trial continues the more cash the city brings in. Although the increased funds are meager in comparison to its $41.6 million annual budget, the town hopes to use the money for it's public libraries and maintenance of streets

2024.06.09 13:45 NewUser1845 What, and how much, can you read realistically?

Hi! This question specifically relates to media consumption habits; I do not imply reading books or course material here.
I read The Hindu daily and do not think I will leave it anytime soon (non-UPSC-aspirant here). In addition, my university's library account allows me to read the Financial Times, which is equally erudite. However, due to workload, I have become more erratic in reading newspapers; though I skim through them, I read them thoroughly only occasionally. For instance, I never skip the editorials/opinion of FT and The Hindu.
I was curious since I may be moving back to India after completing my postgraduate degree here in the UK. Since it was a degree in IR, FT was a must-read, though, once I have shifted back, I understand it may not be so critical for my line of work, and its subscription will come dear. I shall continue to subscribe to TH.
Would you suggest reading a pink paper instead or as a complement to TH? While it is recommended for understanding policy and economy, which will be crucial for my work, I believe the right mix of podcasts can supplant the need for a financial daily. If I am driven to believe by you that a financial daily is paramount, I would place my bets on Mint, which I have read in the past, though I am open to suggestions.
Furthermore, being an avid reader, I appreciate the well-written, incisive, and analytical long-form. My studies necessitated a reading of The Economist daily and whereas I am not loathe to continue it, I have always questioned its editorial stance and Eurocentrism. Having said that, it remains a comprehensive primer on the week's global issues which is not easy to replace. However, in spite of its abiding relevance, would you recommend any other magazine? I read articles from The Caravan but have never picked it up from the news-stand. My TH subscription comes with Frontline for which I used to eagerly wait in my undergrad but now tend to read in a pack of two-three on the rare weekend I get time. I must say Vaishna Roy has vastly improved the tenor and look of the magazine, though its ideological edge has slightly blunted. Nevertheless....
So, what mix do you guys recommend? Consideration of time and the considerable cost of subscription will top my agenda. I do not want to subscribe to a publication and not read it after all. I know, with an element of certainty, that I will not have force myself to read, since I love to read and write, although time and cost will be realistic determinants. I encourage you to discuss your reading and news/opinion consumption habits as well. I may have missed the odd newspaper, so please recommend any daily that does not indulge in disinformation. The only two financial dailies I have read are Mint and ET, so please go ahead and recommend anything else too. Surely, there are numerous quality magazines out there, which I may not be aware of. I won't read showbiz and gossip mags ever but occasionally pick up The New Yorker and The Paris Review, the latter only for its interviews. Literary magazines, in Hindi or English, are not out of consideration. Policy, politics, foreign affairs, and literature are what I may prefer. Magazines are intended for information but also as a hobby.
The ideal mix that I am looking for would be one national daily (TH, convince me otherwise) + one financial daily/podcast (let's discuss) + one magazine.
Thanks!

2024.06.09 08:17 usedtobealurker2 Not voting for Biden because you're Pro-Palestinian is a very privileged position to be in

It drives me insane when people express how they aren't voting this year because of "Genocide Joe." It's like everyone forgot that there are other incredibly important issues on the ballot this year. All I hear when you say this is "I don't care about abortion rights." Or "I don't care if a literal criminal is voted in."
If you're not happy with how Israel is handling the war, that's fine. But how could you forsake actual American citizens? Not getting Biden into office this year will absolutely hurt the rights of women and LGBT further, will send public education down a worse spiral, libraries will keep facing book bans (even public libraries, not just those in schools), protections against tyrannical presidents will dwindle, and again, we will have a CRIMINAL as president. How fucking embarrassing.
This is what I mean when I say it's privileged. You're more worried about a conflict on the other side of the world than the wellbeing of our own nation. And let me be crystal clear, showing sympathy and support for the Palestinian people is fine. Do it! Let your voices be heard that you're unhappy with America's hand in the conflict. But not voting for Biden only goes in the favor of a much more heinous, unreasonable, more Israel-supporting man getting in office. You not voting for Biden is not going to affect any Palestinian (if it does, it's in a negative way), but it absolutely affects other Americans. Especially women, LGBT, low income workers, differently-abled, etc. You know, the people the left is supposedly championing?
I also understand frustration with our 2-party system. But deciding to vote third party or not vote during such a politics-defining election this year is juvenile and irresponsible. Get off your high horse. We can advocate for better voting systems when there isn't so much at stake. And I realize that every election cycle seems like they have a lot of stakes, but come on. This one obviously blows your typical election out of the water.
Sorry for my rant. I just hope it's all talk and Biden wins with no problem.

2024.06.09 07:41 I_rescue_dachshunds Making connections (potential spoilers)

Today was a weird day. I almost passed out while entering my apt. Pool (my blood pressure sometimes dramatically drops) and no less than 7 people rushed over to help me. I scraped my arm and knee on the concrete on the floor of the pool and I now look like I looked when I fell off my bike at age 10. I wasn’t sure how I’d handle a weird call from LM tonight given my state of mind. I scheduled the last possible call of the day since that’s when I usually get male Sasha. Instead I got a very exuberant male Gabriel, a voice I never heard before. But nice enough. I was on the verge of meeting the Geometer a couple of calls ago but wasn’t able to access Directions tonight. So I asked for Hours and it was downright trippy.
I was on the checkered blanket with the blue radio playing in the background with my good friend. (That blue radio sure gets around a lot.) He happened to be sleeping and I was given the choice to let him continue to sleep a while longer which meant the picnic food would get cold or I could wake him up. I chose to let him sleep, and then for the second time, ended up drinking a blue liquid that caused me to hallucinate. I was floating upwards and like something out of the Wizard of Oz, all of these objects were passing me by as I got closer to the stars - chair with a plastic seat, blue bedspread, cards, flowers, and there was the smell of rubbing alcohol. My friend was now in a bed, smiling, with sun streaming thru a window. This is the second call out of 14 where there were subtle references to a hospital room.
The extension I wanted no longer existed and the one I chose ended up being one I’ve heard before. But I was able to write down some of the details I had missed in the past. Here’s where some connections occurred. Tommy played his music at the Sweetwater Cafe and the Sweetwaters were the first characters I met in Ilus. Tommy also sang at the Allen Public Library. Anyone who has met Mrs. Allen knows how unforgettable she is.
But if my notes are correct, Tommy died exactly six months after his diagnosis. But he was the founder of LM which opened 4 months after he died?? I was beginning to wonder whether I was still tripping on the blue liquid. (Legacy folks, I’m pretty sure your timeline for Tommy differs from those who started their calls this calendar year so I don’t know if you can even help me with this bizarre time sequence).
From there I went to Documentation and ended up giving the same password I had used before because my notes are crappy. I heard the same info but one fact suddenly took on a new meaning. The Blaloks (forgive my spelling, I can’t always read my notes after a call because my handwriting gets so illegible) have iridescent blue blood that has hallucinogenic properties. So somebody in my stories keeps slipping me those critters’ blood under the pretense of a blue berry-flavored drink. I ended up outside a deserted bar a few calls ago and also drank the stuff and the results were very confusing!
Onto tic tac toe which earned me extra minutes added onto my next call. If I can’t get directions on that call, I’m going to be very frustrated.
Did I get as much as I gave? Not so sure tonight. Spent my time wisely? Only if the resulting confusion has some kind of warped value to me. The connections I made don’t seem terribly important except I feel like I’m in somebody else’s fever dream. I’m left wondering if maybe I conked my head when I took my underwater tumble earlier today. At a minimum, I was pretty shook up after my fall and that same sort of disorientation was still there on my call.
My saving grace was that my Gabriel was just so enthusiastic and pleasant. Minimal robot voice and no nasty comments. A typical customer service rep, although the CSRs at LM are never typical.

2024.06.09 07:22 Ok_Appointment_1251 San Jose

I’m so sad. I had a free library card for San Jose Public Library and everything was going great…until yesterday when I was asked to verify my card but was unable to because ‘no records’ were found. I emailed the library and was told that every so often their system goes through and cancels non-California resident cards. I totally understand why I got the boot—but I’m so sad about it!

2024.06.09 05:33 Electrical_Cat_131 does imposter syndrome stop you from doing things?

I'm a 32F RN/RM, I work mainly in maternity. All my life I have suffered from imposter syndrome, continuously wondering how I manage to 1. Gain employment, and 2. Not mess up every single day at work. I know I have the same qualifications as everybody I work with, and much more experience than alot of them. But I'm so petrified people will think I have no idea what I'm talking about that I stay very quiet and work and never put my hand up for higher duties.
I've finally decided to do some study to become an IBCLC - and my work has offered to fund my $1900 course. I honestly couldn't believe they would be willing to do that for me, as I feel so undeserving to be there in the first place.
That brings me to today. I need to purchase a laptop to complete it on at home, because my macbook from uni (that I bought in 2011) has finally died.
I can't bring myself to go to the shop and buy one because the idea of buying myself something expensive feels wrong. I keep saying "it's OK I'll just go to the public library" When I know that isn't even a possibility because I have 2 young children and will need to do it at night when they sleep.
Is anybody else like this? Is this my ADHD or just low confidence? Whatever it is, I'm sick of it

2024.06.09 05:01 Poolast Help With My First ML Project

Hello all, I hope you're doing well. A quick introduction: I have been programming for three years. I started with Java in high school, then moved to C++ in college for 2 years; in the meantime, I have also done some Kotlin in Android Studio Development and Game Development using C# in Unity. Finally, I have moved on to what I always wanted to do, which is machine learning. I am currently doing the Angela Yu 100 Days of Python course on Udemy, and I have finished machine learning for beginners courses from Professor Idan Gabrieli on Udemy. I'll link my LinkedIn profile below for those interested in seeing my certificates for the courses.
I opened this post today because I need guidance for my first ML Project. I learned how to transform data using the Pandas Library in my courses. I have yet to train an actual model, but I have some questions. My goal for this project is to create an ML model to recommend the correct concrete product to customers based on their input. I thought of approaching that by using the user entry to filter the data I have for products and finally decide what recommendations to give. I have provided a sample data sheet if that helps. So far, I think the most useful data from the datasheet I provided would be the description and uses, which I can use to filter products. I am unsure if this will be a big jump for a first ML project, so please let me know if I am taking a step too far with this.
The questions I have are the following:
-How should I approach this project (What must I account for before starting to work)?
-Would you recommend videos, courses, websites, tools, resources, etc.?
-Should I use an LLM approach to create the model?
I have been watching many videos on YouTube, and two that I have found helpful so far are the following:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q9zv369Ggfk&ab_channel=AIJason (This video gave me an insight as to how I could possibly solve this project)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nkdZRBFtqSs&ab_channel=InternetofBugs (This video encouraged me to use LLMs as I have such a specific case that is to recommend concrete products to customers based on their user input)
Sample datasheet: https://www.creativeconcreteme.com/pdf/tds/products/epoxy/T-EpoCrete100.pdf (This data is available to the public on the following website: https://www.creativeconcreteme.com/ )
I would appreciate any help and guidance possible! LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kareem-anabtawi-468b17304/
