[Have Gun - Will Travel] - 1.1

[INDEX]
The world has gone mad.
Global pandemic. Civil protests. Riots. Inept leadership. Corruption. Propaganda. World powers shifting uneasily as tensions rise. World War III feels like it’s just one wrong move away.
And I’m trapped here in my crappy little apartment because of quarantine.
Well, not trapped exactly. I could go out and participate in socially distant activities, or join the protests downtown, but I’m too damn depressed to get off the sofa. With everything shut down, I’m currently laid-off temporarily and living on the last of my savings, which consists mostly of ramen and canned veggies. My current hobbies include selling everything I own for rent money, lying on a sofa that was abused by a fraternity back in the 80s, and distracting myself with a crappy smartphone that was outdated when I bought it three years ago. I’ve sold everything else. Television, game console, tablet, computer, and all my games. Material things don’t matter when you don’t have a place to store them.
“I’m not a loser,” I whisper to myself. “I’m not stupid. I’m a hard worker. I’m just stressed and depressed as fuck.”
A century ago I could have just headed out into the wilderness and been a prospector, panning for gold and silver in the hills. I could have hired out as a cowboy, riding the open range and herding the cattle for one of the big ranches. Or been a hired gun. Or a bounty hunter. Considering how desperate I am right now, I would probably fall into a gang of outlaws robbing stage coaches and banks, vanishing across the border to drink and gamble until the money was gone.
Good thing I’m not much of a drinker, I guess.
\Ding**
A text interrupts my idle contemplation of shadows on the ceiling. Lifting my crappy smartphone off my chest, I thumb open the message app. It’s a group text from my boss at iBox Co.
“Hey guys. I know this is a horrible way to deliver the news, but I gotta close the business. Thanks for all the hard work and good luck in the future.”
I drop the phone back onto my chest and it pulses faintly with the beating of my heart.
\Ding**
I check the new text. It’s from my mobile service provider.
“Your automatic bill pay has failed. Please update your account or call the service department.”
Well, duh. No job, no money. No money, no life. Rent due at the end of the week. Supposedly they can’t evict you during quarantine, but they said nothing about the land lord disconnecting the water and power. John down in apartment 2B has been living like a caveman for the last 3 weeks, stubbornly refusing to move out. I wonder if that’s how I’ll end up? Alone in the dark, cooking ramen over a candle.
\Ding**
\Ding**
\Ding**
A quiet rage builds in my gut. Bad news, bad news, bad news. Nothing but bad news and more bad news. Estranged from my divorced parents because I refused to pick sides. Kicked out of college for poor academic performance. Scholarship gone. Girlfriend gone. Job gone. Money gone.
Frustrated at my helplessness, I clench my fist around the phone and fling it behind me.
\Smash**
“Ah shit,” I grumble aloud, instantly regretting my impulsive action and rolling over to survey the damage.
The remains of a fancy framed mirror I had bought for a few bucks at an estate sale hung on the wall, smashed into pieces with my smartphone sticking through it like a ninja star. “How the heck did that happen?” I asked myself, staring in disbelief. I liked that mirror. It was one of the first non-essential purchases I had made after I moved in and I thought it gave the otherwise bare wall some needed character. Now it was shattered into pieces just like everything else in my life.
Crawling off the ratty sofa, I walked over to examine the damage. Pieces of thick glass hung from the frame like jagged teeth, reflecting my too-skinny body in a dozen slivers of reality. My cheap smartphone was embedded in the middle of the mirror and apparently halfway into the wall behind it. Prying away a few shards of glass to survey the damage, a strange pattern was revealed on the wood panel underneath the glass. Wriggling a larger piece loose cost me a nasty slice on my finger and I sucked on it while picking away the remainder of the glass. When everything was clear, my phone was revealed to be smashed through a silvery spiderweb of lines and symbols, apparently merged with the wall like a piece of modern art.
I tried to pull it loose with my good hand, but it was wedged in there tight. Gripping with both hands I tugged and twisted until it was slick with blood from my finger. “What the actual hell?” I said, peering at point where the phone merged with the wood backing of the mirror and the wall. I ran my fingers around the edge of the phone, trying to find where it was stuck and smearing the entire area with bloody fingerprints until it looked like a crime scene.
I gripped it again with both hands and began tugging.
\Ringtone**
My phone began to buzz and vibrate in my hand while the melody of a popular AOP song played. The strange silvery pattern my phone was embedded in lit up like a Christmas tree, glowing with thousands of colours that began chasing each other in time with the music. I instinctively jerked away, but my hands were stuck to the phone.
I couldn’t let go. My fingers were welded to the device! Panicked, I flopped around like a fish on a hook as the bluish light crawled over the phone and up my arms. Some force yanked me into the wall up to my elbows and I started screaming like a little girl with a wasp in her hair.
Then it pulled me completely into the wall.
I disintegrated into a cloud of artificial confetti, falling through synthetic colours and genetically modified sounds. Nothing made sense. The world was a boiling pot of salty madness and I was a shattered jar of elbow macaroni. Eternity passed in a cloud of steam.
“Ah, poor lost thing. What are you doing here?”
A soothing voice laid a foundation for my consciousness and I grabbed at it.
plehhhellephelpeeemeehelpmme
“You are near dissolution. I’ll do my best.”
Invisible fingers pushed and tugged and squeezed and formed the clay of my existence back into me. The last few months of my life flipped by, an embarrassing montage of manga, anime, Red Dead Redemption, and masturbation. Lots of masturbation.
“I’ve done everything I could. I’ll send you through your destination, or close to it. Your kind is not meant to be here without a guardian, remember that.”
Glass shattered into a million fragments as I emerged from that dark realm and tumbled across the ground.
I sucked in a deep breath, choking on soot and the distinct aroma of bird shit.
When the world stopped whirling around me, I opened my eyes. Above me were burnt rafters covered in bird shit and the remains of a roof. Sunlight painted one soot-covered stone wall in the golden hues of a summer afternoon. After a moment, I realised that I felt pretty good. Really good. Like I could run a marathon. Climbing to my feet, I wiped my grimy hands on my shirt. The back was probably a ruin of shit and soot already, so keeping the front clean didn’t make sense.
The room was a ruin. A fire had obviously raged through here some time ago. A wood chair was collapsed in a corner near a fireplace, along with what appeared to be the remains of a table. Shattered bits of glass were scattered all around a large ornate standing mirror frame, the one that I had apparently exited from. A large mound of mushrooms and ferns grew in another corner on what was possibly a bed at one time. Behind me a fire ravaged door hung on blackened timbers.
*System Restart\*
I blinked at the text hanging in the air.

2024.05.27 16:00 sonofabutch No game today, so let's remember a forgotten Yankee: Dave Eiland

"I worked really hard to be mediocre. But I studied. When I lay my head on my pillow, I’m very satisfied, not so much with my record or my numbers, but I know I gave it everything I had every day." -- Dave Eiland
Who is the only player in major league history to give up a home run to the first batter he faced, and to hit a home run against the first pitcher he faced? It's not Babe Ruth, it's not Shohei Ohtani, it's not even Roy Hobbs. It's Dave Eiland!
David William Eiland was born July 5, 1966, in Dade City, Florida. He was an all-conference football and baseball at Zephyrhills High School and then attended the University of Florida on a scholarship to play baseball and football, but an injury his freshman year ended his NFL dreams and he focused on baseball. He then transferred to the University of South Florida, where he was an All-Sun Belt Conference player and a preseason All-American in 1987. He also played for the Falmouth Commodores of the Cape Cod Baseball League.
The Yankees drafted Eiland in the 7th round, #185 overall, of the 1987 draft. He rose quickly through the Yankee system, jumping from Low-A to A-ball in his debut season of 1987; he went a combined 9-3 with a 1.87 ERA and 0.960 WHIP in 91.2 innings.
The following year he started in Double-A, where he was an Eastern League All-Star after going 9-5 with a 2.56 ERA and 0.980 WHIP in 119.1 innings, and was promoted to Triple-A Columbus, where he made just one start before getting the call: The soon-to-be 37-year-old Ron Guidry pulled his hamstring and was going on the Disabled List. Eiland was called up to take his place in the rotation.
Eiland's debut on August 3, 1988, was against the Brewers in Milwaukee, and the first batter he faced was future Hall of Famer Paul Molitor. The third baseman welcomed the 22-year-old rookie to the Show by cranking a 1-2 slider to deep left-center for a home run.
"It was the first batter. It only counts for one run." -- Dave Eiland
Eiland settled down after that, allowing just two more hits and two walks in seven innings. But then Eiland's leg started cramping up -- in the sixth, manager Lou Piniella and trainer Gene Monahan went to the mound to check on him -- and he was pulled after the seventh inning. Closer Dave Righetti came in to get the final six outs in a game the Yankees were winning 5-1, and he was bombed for five runs on five hits while retiring just one batter, and the Yankees lost, 6-5.
Eiland made two more starts that year, but he lasted a total of just 5.2 innings while surrendering eight runs on 12 hits, two walks, and two hit batters. The big problem, as demonstrated by the very first batter he faced in the majors, was the long ball -- Eiland gave up five in those 5.2 innings!
The Yankees sent Eiland back down to Columbus after his start on August 17, and he spent the rest of the season down there. The following year he started in Triple-A again. The Yankees called him up in June and again he looked pretty good in his first start, holding the Texas Rangers to three runs over seven innings and getting his first major league win. But over the rest of the season he went 0-3 in five starts, with a 6.26 ERA and 1.683 WHIP in 27.1 innings (and giving up five home runs). Once again he rode the "Columbus Shuttle" and he spent the rest of the season in the minors, and began the 1990 season down there as well.
Eiland -- still just 23 years old -- dominated in Columbus that season, going 16-5 with a 2.87 ERA and 1.067 WHIP. He was named the International League Pitcher of the Year, and the Yankees made him a September call-up. He finally looked good enough in pinstripes -- 2-1, 3.56 ERA, 1.187 WHIP in 30.1 innings -- that he looked like he'd stick the next season.
He opened 1991 in the rotation, joining previously forgotten Yankee Tim Leary, Scott Sanderson, Chuck Cary, and Andy Hawkins... yikes. It was not a fun time to be a Yankee fan.
Eiland went 1-3 with a 4.75 ERA in nine starts before hurting his heel in May and going on the Disabled List. He came back in August, got two more starts -- giving up 11 runs in 8.2 innings -- and was put in the bullpen. (Eiland later said he came back before he'd fully recovered because he wanted to help the team.) He was given two starts at the end of the year, and looked pretty good -- in 12.0 innings, he gave up just three runs on nine hits and a walk.
But that winter, the Yankees made a series of roster moves, signing free agents Danny Tartabull and previously forgotten Yankees Mike Gallego and Mike Stanley; trading Steve Sax to the White Sox for Melido Perez, previously forgotten Yankee Bob Wickman, and Domingo Jean; and acquiring Charlie Hayes from the Phillies for Darrin Chapin. They needed to clear a spot on the 40-man roster. Eiland was designated for assignment, and he didn't like it.
"As far as I'm concerned, it was a stupid move on the part of the Yankees and I'm looking forward to leaving. I've done a lot more for them than some of the people they have kept. I guess I didn't fit into their plans. It doesn't make sense." -- Dave Eiland
He was promptly signed by the Padres, who put him at the end of their rotation for the upcoming 1992 season.
Eiland started the fifth game of the year against the Los Angeles Dodgers in San Diego. He allowed an RBI double to future Yankee Darryl Strawberry in the 1st inning, but future Yankee Gary Sheffield tied it up with an RBI triple in the bottom of the 1st. Eiland retired the side in order in the top of the 2nd.
In the bottom of the 2nd, a walk followed by two outs brought up Eiland with a man on second base. He was facing yet another future Yankee, Bob Ojeda, and drilled a 2-2 pitch to left-center for a two-run home run!
As Eiland had been in the American League his first four seasons -- no interleague play then -- he'd never come up as a batter before. And so he became the first player to allow a home run to the first batter he faced, and to hit a home run against the first pitcher he faced. It would be the only home run of his career.
"It was a fluke. I wish people would talk about my pitching instead of my hitting." -- Dave Eiland
Eiland pitched two seasons in San Diego, going 0-5 with a 5.38 ERA in 16 starts and one relief appearance. They released him the following May, and he signed with the Cleveland Indians. They sent him to Triple-A, where he made eight starts with the Charlotte Knights (1-3, 5.30 ERA) before being traded to the Texas Rangers, who kept him in Triple-A for the rest of the season (3-1, 4.54 ERA). A free agent after the season, he signed with the Yankees during spring training in 1994 and spent the next two seasons back in Columbus, going 9-6 with a 3.58 ERA in 1994 and 8-7 with a 3.14 ERA in 1995. The Yankees called him up on July 21 and he made one start and three relief appearances, going 1-1 with a 6.30 ERA in 10.0 innings.
He signed a minor league deal with the Cardinals for the 1996 season and pitched in eight games, going 0-1 with a 5.55 ERA in 24.1 innings, before getting released in June. Three days later he returned to the Yankees for a third stint, going 8-4 with a 2.92 ERA in Columbus in 15 starts. He was a September call-up for that magical 1996 season, but never got into a game.
Returning to the Yankees on a minor-league deal in 1997, the 30-year-old Eiland battled tendinitis and went 5-3 with a 6.42 ERA in 81.1 innings across three levels.
Eiland spent the next three years of his major league career in the Tampa Bay Devil Rays organization, splitting his time between the majors and minors as a swingman. He went 6-12 with a 6.54 ERA and 1.663 WHIP in 137.2 innings with the Devil Rays.
After the 2000 season, Eiland signed a minor league deal with the Oakland A's, but he tore his elbow and missed the entire season after getting Tommy John surgery. An attempted comeback in 2002 was ended when he retore the same ligament 51 weeks later. In those days, a second Tommy John surgery was thought to be a death sentence for a pitcher's elbow. Rather than attempting another comeback, he retired to become a pitching coach.
In interviews, Eiland -- with a career 12-27 record, with a 5.74 ERA and 1.563 WHIP -- said his major league struggles forced him to be a student of the game, and that would serve him well as a pitching coach.
“I didn’t have the God-given ability to get over the hump, so to speak. I kept getting chances because I did my work and I think that helps me in the coaching aspect. I work with guys now who have ability. I can teach them how to work, how to study film, how to read swings, how to attack guys.” -- Dave Eiland
He was a minor league pitching coach at various levels with the Yankees from 2003 to 2007, and was credited with helping the minor league development of the Yankees' trio of promising pitching prospects -- Phil Hughes, Joba Chamberlain, and Ian Kennedy.
After Joe Girardi replaced Joe Torre as Yankee manager in 2008, Eiland was named the team's pitching coach, a position he held for three seasons. He earned a ring as the pitching coach of the 2009 World Series champions.
Eiland's contract was not renewed after the 2010 season, with Brian Cashman giving the cryptic explanation: "He knows why. He was given conditions that needed to be followed. So he knows why." In June of that season, Eiland had taken a three-week leave of absence from the Yankees which was never explained beyond it being a family issue.
After the Yankees, Eiland worked in the Tampa Bay Rays' front office and then was a pitching coach for the Royals from 2012 to 2017 (winning a second World Series ring as a coach in 2015). He served as Mets pitching coach in 2018 and 2019, and Jacob deGrom, Zack Wheeler, and Steven Matz credited their improvement as pitchers to his guidance. In 2020 he managed the Eastern Reyes del Tigre in the independent Constellation Energy League. In 2021 he was a pitching coach in the independent Atlantic League, and in 2022 and 2023, a pitching coach for the Miami Marlins' Double-A team.
Eiland is now Head of Baseball for Grand Central Sports Management.
Eiland Living
"It's about perseverance. Hard work pays off. Maybe not right away, maybe not overnight. But eventually, it does." -- Dave Eiland
Ten seasons in the Show means a lot to ballplayers. Ten seasons means you're fully vested in the pension plan. It also means you are eligible to appear on the Hall of Fame ballot (though the Baseball Writers' Association of America doesn't have to put you on the ballot, and they didn't put Eiland on it). Dave Eiland, a pitcher who described himself as someone who "worked really hard to be mediocre," worked hard enough to last 10 seasons in the majors, and that's pretty impressive.
He's also the answer to a cool trivia question and was in a pretty good baseball movie.
Definitely a Yankee worth remembering!

2024.05.22 16:53 ewk Zen Koan ELI5: Baofu's Ram

Yaunwu's Measuring Tap 84. Baofu’s ram

https://www.amazon.com/Measuring-Tap-Chan-Buddhist-Classic-ebook/dp/B07RYFN7JM

Xuedou presented this Case:

A monk asked Baofu, “What did [your teacher] Xuefeng used to say that was like when a ram is hung up by the horns?”
Baofu said, “I cannot but be a disciple of Xuefeng.”

Xuedou's Instruction on the Case

“Of fifteen hundred monks, Baofu amounts to a little bit.”

Yuanwu's instruction on the Case:

People with clear eyes have no clichés—they do not bind the sons and daughters of other people with dogma. Only if you are like rams hung up by the horns can you manage to help people— without sound or form, with no tracks or traces, impossible to lay hold of. “I cannot but be a disciple of Xuefeng”—he had the ability of a hound biting a boar, clear and concise; that’s why Xuedou cites this story.

ELI5

The ram is a dangerous animal and can ram with enough force to cause serious injury and death. But the danger is all in the horns; the teeth and feet are not dangerous at all. So when you hang a ram up by it's horns, you take the most dangerous part of the animal but use it's own horns to subdue it.
So the monk's question is, "Can you take your teacher Xuefeng's most important teaching and use it to subdue him?"
And Baofu says, "I'm not any better than Xuefeng". This is a double attack, first on the Zen tradition that a true heir must surpass the teacher. Second, that Baofu admits he only has what his teacher gave him (dharma transmission) and there isn't more to it. Baofu doesn't have his own thing.
Xuedou then adds "Baofu amounts to a little bit", but this in the context of fifteen hundred monks that amounted to nothing.
Yuanwu says at the end, people with clear eyes (enlightened masters) do not teach rules, principles, laws, beliefs, ideas, any of that. It is only when you are stripped of your greatest weapons that you can help people. And that kind of helping, people won't be able to define you. A hound biting a boar is when the weaker party chases the stronger party, but inevitably wins anyway (because the hound servers the hunter, who in this Case is enlightenment, Buddha).

.

Welcome! ewk comment: Lots of translators try to translate interpretations into koans, but they can't publicly defend those interpretations. This is generally because there is no Zen academics anywhere yet, and Buddhists have tried to do Zen scholarship and largely failed. This in turn is because Buddhism is a matter of faith, of private conversations, whereas Zen is a matter of public interview. If people try their explanations out in public and fail, everybody will understand the problem. The goal of Buddhist/Christian faith is to believe without argument, so it's a different situation entirely. That's why Zen Masters wrote books like Xuedou and Yuanwu: public interview is Zen's tradition.

2024.05.01 18:47 Magikapow Theory, Brobeni is secretly cracked

You cant get in the club without killing a devil, so Nobana had to kill one without a contract. He’s actually in the inner circle and tour guide so he’s probably really strong within the group. The fact that seigi isn’t tour guide might mean nobanas stronger, and seigi is BUFF. Also this might mean kobenis insane stunts are just genetic.

2024.04.26 17:17 daecrist Hunter 5 - Getting Ready

< < Next Chapter>>
Craig
“Craig? Where are you, Craig?”
He heard his mom calling him from the front yard. He knew she’d be sticking her head out the front door any moment now. And if she saw him out here, well that would be all she wrote.
Literally, sometimes.
The last thing he wanted was for his mom to catch him out front when he was supposed to be doing whatever it was she just told him to do. He couldn’t remember. Sometimes it felt like everything went in one ear and out the other.
He wasn’t sure if that was because he’d gotten really good at ignoring her, or if there was something else going on there.
It was the same feeling he got whenever he was trying to do an assignment for school. Reading the same paragraph over and over, and only getting more and more frustrated knowing he should be able to absorb this shit, but he couldn’t.
He wished he was tossing a football around right now. He’d just gotten home from practice a little while ago. It would be nice to have some down time when he got home, but of course his mom would never have that. Not when there were chores to do.
It didn’t help that Coach had been all sorts of intense with him at practice today. He was excited at the opportunity, terrified at the pressure being put on him, and guilty because he knew the only reason he got this opportunity was because somebody had torn Brad and Carrie to shreds.
At least that was the story he heard. He wasn’t quite sure he believed that. Sure there were all the stories of the Beast that had been going around for as long as he could remember, but it seemed like every time somebody died it got attributed to the Beast.
Little old lady had a heart attack late last night? The Beast clearly walked past her window and gave her that heart attack. Someone had their lungs ripped out while they were waiting outside the Chinese restaurant to get some beef chow mein? Totally the Beast.
Okay. So that last one sounded like the kind of thing that would be the Beast. Not that he thought that one had actually happened. Still. The point was everybody blamed everything on that monster, and he was pretty sure it was just an urban legend.
There was a fancy word he’d learned from Josh.
Speaking of. Already he was wishing he hadn’t invited Josh over, for all that it would be a reprieve from his mom. Only it was tradition. It wasn’t like he was going to abandon his friend. Not when they only had a month and some change before school started.
Still. Better to do it on a Saturday. He didn’t have as much to do on a Saturday. He didn’t have the twitches in his muscles as he remembered everything from practice, for all that he’d have to go straight to practice the next day.
Yet another reason why it was better for Josh to come over on a Saturday night. He didn’t have practice the next day. The Lord’s day was the one day of the week Coach thought was sacrosanct.
Only Josh was weird about coming over on Saturdays. Probably because he had to go to church with them the next day. Which wasn’t something Craig could blame him for.
He wished he could get out of going to church. He almost wished Coach would have practices on Sundays. That would be the one thing that would get him a pass from church. Maybe.
Jesus was number one in his mom’s book, sure, but it was a question of whether it was Jesus or football as far as his dad was concerned.
“Craig? Where are you, young man!”
He looked around. There was just the one street that ran down to the end of their cul-de-sac. There was the wider neighborhood off in the distance in the other direction, but he wouldn’t be able to get down there in time to avoid whatever it was his mom wanted.
Was it taking out the trash? Was he supposed to take something out of the laundry? He couldn’t remember, and he knew he’d catch hell for not remembering what she wanted him to do as much as he’d catch hell for not doing it in the first place.
So instead he ducked around the side of the house. He glanced in his bedroom window for a moment, peering through the thin crack.
His dad liked to keep the blinds closed during the day. He was always going on about how he wasn’t paying to air condition the sunlight streaming in through the windows, but Craig always tried to leave at least a small sliver open.
The better to look in through that window and make sure his parents weren’t in his room looking through his stuff. He knew a spot inspection could happen any time. Which was why he’d learned to hide his good stuff.
And why he always left his blinds cracked open just a little so he could look at what they were doing without them knowing he could see what they were doing.
There was nobody in there right now. He froze as he thought he heard the front door open. Almost as though she could sense he was outside trying to avoid her. There were times when he thought his mother had a tracking device on him or something. Like the kind of thing you saw in the movies.
Only those things were always really big, and he didn’t think she had some futuristic thing that could be used to track him.
He froze, his fight or flight response going into staying as still as possible. It irritated him that he reacted like this whenever he was worried about his mom catching him, but he also knew the slightest hint of a noise would be enough to have her turn around the side of the house so she could lay into him.
He really didn’t want to have another incident where he could see the curtains and blinds moving ever so slightly on all the other houses on their cul-de-sac. That let him know everybody else was watching. Probably enjoying the show.
Craig shivered. The last thing he wanted was to give the neighbors a show. So he held still, worried she might decide to come around the side of the house anyway.
Then again, the woman could be surprisingly lazy. As lazy as she was overwhelmingly sweet whenever he had someone over. Which was another reason he was always sure to invite Josh over on the weekends, for all that another part of him didn’t want to bother with it.
She transformed into the kind of mom anybody would be lucky to have when there was company over. Not so much any other time.
“Craig! Where have you gotten to?”
The voice was syrupy sweet now. Oh yes. It was always syrupy sweet when she thought somebody might be listening in. Except for the times when she let the anger get the best of her, and then there were those shifting blinds. Those curtains moving.
Everybody watching. Everybody knowing. Everybody tsking and talking about how horrible it was that Craig had pushed his dear sweet mother over the edge, and why couldn’t he try to be a better son? Why did he have to always make things so difficult for his poor long-suffering mother?
He shook his head. The front door slammed. He waited for the space of another couple of breaths, wondering if it was a trap. If she was going to come around the side of the house anyway.
That didn’t happen. He thought he heard somebody moving through the house. She’d be over in the garage now, if she kept to her usual search pattern. He had no intention of letting her know he wasn’t in the house.
He ducked low as he went along the fence. There was a time when it was easier to duck low and avoid being seen. Now he was so big that he felt ridiculous trying to hide, but some concealment was better than none.
He glanced over to Mrs. Miller’s house, but he didn’t see her staring out the sliding glass door on the back of her house. She did that sometimes when she heard his mom looking for him, but she’d never ratted him out.
She’d also never done anything about it. Never said anything to his mom. Never said anything to anyone who could help. So he was ambivalent about Mrs. Miller.
She didn’t matter anyway. She wouldn’t rat him out even if she was looking. Which she wasn’t. He could make his escape. Maybe.
If he just stayed out of the house long enough for Josh to get there everything would be okay. His mom would be that syrupy sweet woman inside the house and outside, and if he was lucky she’d forget whatever it was she was upset about right now.
She’d tell him he forgot to take the laundry out of the washer and put it into the dryer with a smile and a glance to Josh and a tightness around her eyes, and everything would be fine. Maybe.
There’d been times when she remembered to yell at him after Josh went home, after all.
“Just a few more years,” he muttered to himself. “A few more years and you’re out of here.”
Realistically getting out of here looked like joining the army or something like that. Be all that he could be. Sure there was always a part of him that fantasized about getting a college scholarship. He’d heard of schools where they put a rubber stamp on your degree as long as you were good at football.
He figured he needed one of those schools. After all, it’s not like he was going to get a college degree with his academic skills. Josh was the one who was always good at that book learning shit.
He reached the back of the fence line and paused to look back at the house. A part of him was terrified of looking back. As though that would somehow summon his mother.
He imagined seeing her face staring out the back window at him. Or maybe through the kitchen window. It would be every bit as terrifying as catching a glimpse of the Beast who he never really believed existed, for all that there were all those rumors.
That hadn’t stopped his dad from yelling at him about being a pussy when he was little and came into their room afraid. Yelling about how he needed to toughen up and stop jumping at shadows. Be a real man. Like him.
Craig shivered as he opened the gate behind the house, oh so slowly to keep it from creaking, and moved into the cornfield beyond. He slipped in between the stalks that only came up to about his waist and breathed a sigh of relief.
She wouldn’t come after him out here. There’d been a time when he’d been terrified of this place. When he’d been small enough that a run in with a coyote might’ve been dangerous. Or, more realistically, a run in with one of the coydogs that bred with the coyotes and didn’t have a fear of humans.
He wasn’t afraid of any of that shit now. Let a pack of the little yipping fuckers come at him. He’d smash them.
He felt like smashing something. There was an anger building inside him. An anger that was always there when he had to deal with his parents.
Of course dealing with his mom was better than dealing with his dad.
He shivered again. He could hear the old asshole now. Though he’d been a whole hell of a lot more tolerable since Craig started doing football. Especially after he got the quarterback position.
The old man had been bragging about it all over town. Which got some odd looks since everyone knew the only reason Craig was getting that chance as a junior was because Brad had been ripped to pieces.
“Nobody in town can stand that asshole,” he muttered.
He looked up to the sky above. He could still see over the cornstalks. There was a time when they would’ve been coming up almost to his head at this time of year, but a few big growth spurts had taken care of that.
To be honest those growth spurts had probably done more for keeping his dad’s hands off him than playing football, for that matter.
He felt at home here now. The field had gone from being a place where he was afraid to a place where he knew he’d be safe because neither one of his parents would bother to come after him out here.
Sure they’d be waiting with disapproval when he eventually decided to come home, but whatever.
He started walking. He figured Josh would want to come out here later tonight. He smiled as he thought of the spears they’d made. That had been fun. An excuse to get out of the house and go hang out with Josh’s crazy Uncle Cody for a little while. And the man really was crazy.
There were times when he looked at that spear resting on the special stand they’d created for them and thought about how he could grab that when his dad was yelling at him and…
He pushed those thoughts down. He might be angry, but that was a terrifying thought. He didn’t know where it came from, and he smashed down on it as aggressively as he wanted to smash down on a coydog’s head right about now.
He kept walking. He glanced at his watch. He still had a little while until Josh was supposed to be over.
He lost track of time as he walked. He usually did when he was lost in his thoughts and feeling sorry for himself.
Eventually he found himself at the small woods on the other side of the cornfield. The countryside was dotted with small little woods that farmers kept around because they marked a property boundary, or they covered a train track that ran through somebody’s property, or there was a river or creek that couldn’t be diverted.
There were a lot of reasons why the trees might’ve survived being on prime farmland. There were times when he felt like somebody could move across the entire county by sticking to those wooded areas, though he wasn’t sure how realistic that was.
He looked up at those trees now. They were more than familiar to him. He’d been in here plenty of times playing with Josh. Sure that kind of shit seemed a little silly now, but whatever. It was fun.
Even if Josh was always going on about elves and other bullshit like that. The kind of stuff he never would’ve been interested in himself, but Josh was fascinated by that shit, and always made it seem fun. He stopped and looked at the woods. Then he looked up to the skies again. It was starting to get dark, but it was still mid-July. That meant it wouldn’t be getting too dark too early.
Then he turned and looked off in the distance, and frowned again. Because the moon was hanging there. It seemed to call to him as he stared up at it. His mouth fell open and he took a step towards it, then thought about how ridiculous that was.
It’s not like he could walk to the moon. No, he’d have to get on a rocket or something, and they’d stopped sending rockets to the moon a few years before he was born.
He thought he heard something snap, and he turned to look at the trees. It was thick enough in the little woods that it was hard to see too far. There were some really big trees in there. Like the kind of stuff that made him think this maybe went back to the days when Indians had roamed the land.
He’d found arrowheads in there a couple of times. Josh always got really excited about that. Hell, he always got really excited about it. Even if his dad told him it was stupid for him to get excited about a bunch of “Injun bullshit.”
Which felt vaguely wrong to him, though he couldn’t put his finger on why. Probably because if his old man was saying it then he was being an asshole about something.
His head moved on a swivel, searching for the source of that snap. He wasn’t afraid so much as he was curious. He was a big guy, after all. He figured he could handle anything that came at him.
“Hello?” he called out.
There was no response.
He did feel a tingle on the back of his neck. He thought about how Brad and Carrie bought the big one.
The stories said they’d been torn to pieces. That the inside of Brad’s ancient boat of a car had been coated with blood.
He wasn’t sure how much he believed that. Most of it was small town gossip, and he knew talk was cheap. That people loved to play the telephone game where they tried to make things sound way more horrible than they were in reality.
Still…
“Is anyone out there?” he called out.
Which was ridiculous. It had to be an animal of some sort. Maybe a bobcat. Maybe a coyote. It’s not like there was anything out there that could actually hurt him.
Even all that shit about the Beast was probably a cover-up. That’s what Coach said, at least. The local cops couldn’t handle some serial killer or something who’d been stalking the county for decades, and so they made up a bunch of bullshit about a fucking monster that ripped people’s lungs out for fun to cover up their incompetence.
Yeah. That sounded a whole hell of a lot more likely than some monster roaming the countryside killing people.
There was no more sound. No sound at all. Not from insects. Not from animals. Not from anything.
That had the tingling on the back of his neck going all over again. He backed away. Back into the corn. Though as he did so he never took his eyes off the woods. He was backed up a good twenty feet or so before he lost that prickling sensation on the back of his neck.
He waited for another moment, wondering if there was really something out there or if it was just his imagination. But then slowly the insects started chattering again. Making the same noises that had been the backdrop to every good night of his childhood.
He chuckled, wondering why he was jumping at shadows. Probably because of practice and Coach yelling about how Brad could’ve done it better, which inevitably led to thoughts of what had happened to Brad and wondering how much of that was the truth, and how much of it was small town bullshit.
He shrugged, then turned and made his way back towards the house. It was a little darker overhead, but still not quite twilight.
Though as he turned and looked back towards the trees he had that strange feeling again. The same as when he looked at the moon. Like there was something back there calling to him. Something that sent a shiver running through him.
And not necessarily a bad shiver.
He turned and made his way back to the house. Where he could hear his mom calling. Like she was pissed off that he’d disappeared. It was almost enough to make him turn back to the scary woods. Running into the Beast might be preferable to getting into it with his mom.
But then he heard something else that made him feel better. The unmistakable sound of a station wagon engine revving.
Josh was here. Which meant whatever his mom was pissed off about, it would have to wait until tomorrow after football practice. And maybe that would be enough time that she forgot whatever the fuck it was she was mad about.
If he was lucky. He wasn’t always that lucky, after all.

2024.04.10 18:02 Abiv23 Dane Brugler's draft guide: Broncos Edition

I was using chatGPT to format these and it's down for me, i'll fix when I can
Dane's draft guide just dropped here are some of the write ups on players the Broncos have met with
I didn't include any of the QBs as I wanted to do a separate post focusing on them only

Day 1 prospects (Day 2 prospects are in the comments)

Brock Bowers (#1 TE in class) Georgia 6031 243 lbs. 3JR Napa, Calif. (Napa) 12/13/2002 (age 21.37) #19

Brock Bowers, the youngest of two children, grew up in Napa and played multiple sports throughout childhood, including baseball, basketball, golf, soccer, and tennis. He was also an avid duck and deer hunter.
Bowers was a standout baseball player in Little League, but his focus shifted to basketball and football in middle school. He played just two years of football before high school and joined the 7-on-7 team KT Prep in eighth grade.
Enrolling at Napa High School, Bowers started as a 5-foot-11 option quarterback for the junior varsity team as a freshman. Moving up to varsity as a sophomore, he emerged as a do-everything weapon, playing wide receiver, tight end, running back, defensive end, linebacker, and returning kicks. Despite Napa's winless (0-10) season his sophomore year (2018), Bowers posted impressive stats with 42 catches for 620 yards and seven touchdowns.
In his junior year, he earned first-team All-Metro, was named County Player of the Year, and took home league MVP honors. Bowers finished the 2019 season with 39 catches for 1,098 yards (28.2 average) and 14 touchdowns, adding 316 rushing yards, three rushing touchdowns, 29 tackles, and an 85-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. His 2020 season was canceled due to the pandemic. Bowers also lettered as a power forward in basketball.
A four-star recruit, Bowers was the No. 3 tight end in the 2021 recruiting class and the No. 10 recruit in California. After his first varsity season, he received his first scholarship offer from Nevada. However, his recruitment exploded after attending the 2019 Nike Sparq camp, where he impressed with a 4.5-second 40-yard dash. Bowers' list of offers grew from one to over 20, including major West Coast programs like Oregon, UCLA, USC, and Washington. He also considered offers from Michigan, Notre Dame (which offered him as a linebacker), and Penn State.
Ultimately, it was Georgia and tight ends coach Todd Hartley who recruited him the hardest. Bowers desired the same small-town feel he had experienced growing up, combined with a big stage on which to compete, making Athens a natural choice for him. He enrolled early in January 2021 and was the No. 8 recruit in the Bulldogs' 2021 recruiting class.
Bowers' parents met at Utah State, where they were both student-athletes. His father, Warren, now a partner of a Napa construction company, was an All-Conference center on the offensive line. Brock’s mother, DeAnna, a part-time math teacher and softball coach, was an All-American pitcher and first baseman on the softball team (1990-93) and was inducted into the Utah State Hall of Fame in 2016. Brock’s older sister, Brianna, played softball at Sacramento State (2019-21).
Bowers, who also earned Academic All-America honors, opted out of the 2023 bowl game and elected to skip his senior season to enter the 2024 NFL Draft.
STRENGTHS: Special athlete for his size ... opens his stride and reaches top speed in a blink ... sets up routes with stems, head nods and sharp footwork, which allows him to accelerate in and out of his breaks ... above-average ball skills, catching the ball well outside his frame (4.4 percent career drop rate) ... coordinated body controlhelpshimcleanlyadjustorhighpointtotheballmid-air...dangerousafterthecatch,becauseofhisspeedandcompetitive chopsto keep hisfeet through contact (averaged 8.5 YAC per reception in college) ... diverse route runner and can be flexed across the formation ... defenses gravitate towards him, creating decoy situations to open windows for other targets ... has the speed to execute jet sweeps (183 rushing yards and five rushing touchdowns in his career) ... physical positional blocker to reach, seal and keep his man occupied ... can be a lead blocker and clear the way ... rare maturity and smarts for a 21 year old (sniffs out and communicates blitzes pre-snap) ... NFL scouts rave about his competitive mentality and the way he despises losing and rises in big moments ... warrior toughness, and his teammates called him “Superman” after he missed only two games following a tightrope ankle procedure — normally a four-to-six-week injury (Kirby Smart: “Agentscalledhimandtoldhimtositouttheseasonaftertheinjury.Thosepeoplewillnotberepresentinghim,Ipromiseyouthat, because all it did waspisshim off.”) ... made his mark in the Georgia record books, finishi ng No. 2 in career touchdown grabs (26), No. 3 in catches (175) and No. 4 in receiving yards (2,538). BACK TO TABLE OF CONTENTS 94
WEAKNESSES: Doesn’t have desired tight-end size for inline work ... offers some growth potential but will likely be under 245 pounds for his NFL career ... doesn’t have ideal length or overwhelming power to easily uncoil versus NFL defensive ends as an attached blocker ... rangy move blocker but can do a better job breaking down in space ... fumbled twice in 2023 ... missed three games as a junior because of a left ankle injury (October 2023), which required tightrope surgery (still traveled with the team and was involved in the gameplan).
SUMMARY: A three-year starter at Georgia, Bowers was the featured weapon in offensive coordinator Mike Bobo’s scheme, lining up across the formation, with his career snaps spread between the slot (52.2 percent), inline (36.6 percent) and wide (9.5 percent). He led the team in receiving each of his three seasons in Athens and joined Herschel Walker and David Pollack as the only three -time first team All-Americans in school history. He also became the first two-time winner of the John Mackey Award as the nation’s top tight end. With both short-area burst and long speed, Bowers makes quick, dynamic cuts to create spacing as a route runner and hits another gear with the ball in his hands to be a home -run threat. He is a natural hands-catcher outside his frame and snatches without breaking stride. His physicality (before the catch, after the catch and as a blocker) is almost as impressive as his athletic traits, although his lack of ideal size and length will show in some inline blocking situations. Overall, Bowers is explosive pass catcher who creates mismatches all over the field with speed, ball skills and competitive edge. He has NFL star potential in the mold of George Kittle, if he lands with a play caller prepared to feature his unique and versatile talent.

Joe Alt (#1 OT in class, will have to trade up) Notre Dame 6085 321 lbs. 3JR North Oaks, Minn. (Totino-Grace) 2/28/2003 (age 21.15) #76

Joseph "Joe" Alt, the youngest of five children (two boys, three girls), was born and raised in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area. He grew up in an athletic family, playing multiple sports, and enjoyed fishing and hunting.
Alt primarily played quarterback throughout youth football and middle school. He enrolled at Totino-Grace High School, a private Catholic school, and started at quarterback before moving to linebacker as a sophomore. With his height and frame, his father (John) knew Joe would eventually move to the offensive line, but he made sure he was experienced at several other positions and developed his athleticism before the inevitable move to a three-point stance.
At 230 pounds, Alt moved to defensive end and tight end as a junior and finished with 17 receptions for 143 yards, although he was mainly used as a blocker and sixth offensive lineman. As a senior, he was up to 260 pounds and was again used as a blocking tight end, while also seeing occasional snaps at left tackle (his father was an assistant offensive line coach at Totino-Grace). After a losing record in 2018, Alt helped the program to winning records and playoff appearances as a junior and senior, earning first-team All-Metro, All-District, and All-State honors in 2020. He also lettered in basketball.
A four-star recruit, Alt was the No. 32 offensive tackle in the 2021 recruiting class and the No. 6 recruit in Minnesota. A lean blocking tight end, he didn’t receive his first scholarship offer (Minnesota) until after his junior season. Alt was still something of a secret in the spring of 2020, but several other programs (Iowa State, Kansas State, Northwestern, Rutgers) entered the mix after seeing his potential at camps. He considered Iowa (his father’s alma mater) and Minnesota (his brother’s alma mater and close to home) but wanted to forge his path and committed to Notre Dame. Alt, who attended Catholic school his entire life, signed with the Irish because of academics and the opportunity to play for a program known for producing NFL offensive linemen. He was the No. 8 recruit in Notre Dame’s 2021 class.
John Alt, who was nicknamed the “Monumental Minnesotan,” transitioned from tight end into an All-American offensive tackle at Iowa (1980-83) and was drafted in the first round (No. 21) by the Kansas City Chiefs. John started 149 games over 13 seasons (1984-96) in Kansas City, earning two Pro Bowl nods, and was inducted into the Chiefs Hall of Honor in 2002.
Joe’s brother (Mark), who is 12 years older, was a high school quarterback and had a football scholarship to Iowa but opted instead to play hockey at Minnesota (2010-13). Mark was drafted in the second round (No. 53 overall) of the 2010 NHL Draft and went on to play for the Philadelphia Flyers, Colorado Avalanche, and Los Angeles Kings.
His older sister (Jordyn) played college basketball at Denver University (2014-18). He has two other older sisters (Lauren and Julia).
Joe Alt elected to skip the 2023 bowl game and his senior season to enter the 2024 NFL Draft.
STRENGTHS: Rare redirect and recovery skills, especially for a blocker with his size ... footwork went from good to exceptional in college ... jump sets rushers with impressive accuracy and is rarely late reaching pass-set landmarks ... plays with better-than-expected leverage and sink ... uses every inch of his long arms to lock out andmaintaindistancebetweenhimandrushers...flashestheabilitytoclampdownpowerfulfive-techniques...fundamentallysoundandstaysontime(or ahead of schedule) with his hand placement ... disciplined eyes and is rarely fooled by stunts or delayed pressures ... nimble puller and has shown improved control when stalking at the second level ... steers defenders in the run game with natural power and smooth hips ... penalized just four times in three seasons in South Bend ... enjoyshardandconstantcoaching...All-Americanpedigreewithoutstandingpersonalandfootballcharacter...hisfatherandolderbrotherwere both professional athletes, and the requirements at the next level won’t be too much for him ... one of the youngest players in the 2024 draft class ... ironman competitor and didn’t miss a game in college (finished his Notre Dame career with 33 straight starts).
WEAKNESSES:Anchortendstobegradualandpowerrusherscanwalkhimbackbeforehesettles...occasionallycaughtlunginginpassprotectionversusspeed and can be yanked forward ... his hands are well-timed and active but not always forceful to jar at contact ... easy for his pads to rise when drive blocking ... still relatively new to the offensive line and certain techniques will require time ... was a left tackle only in college and doesn’t have exper ience at right tackle or inside at guard.
SUMMARY: A three-year starter at Notre Dame, Alt was a mainstay at left tackle in offensive coordinator Gerad Parker’s balanced scheme. The so n of a Pro Bowl offensive lineman, he played quarterback and tight end in high school before transitioning to tackle and b ecoming an All-American in South Bend. Although his pass- proanchorisn’talwaysimmediateandhegetscaughtoverextending,Althasthenaturalabilitytoachieve proper leverage, frame up rusherswith hislength and consistently get back to the strength of his body without losing balance. In the run game, he displays terrific movement skills and large, skilled hands to generat e movement at the point of attack. Overall, Alt stays light on his feet with the big-man agility, body control and instinctive recovery skills to become a high-level run blocker and above-average pass protector very early in this NFL career. He projects as a first-year, scheme-versatile starter with the pedigree to be a cornerstone player for an NFL franchise (he is Jake Matthews in Nate Solder’s body).

Jared Verse (#2 EDGE in class) Florida State 6037 254 lbs. 5SR Berwick, Pa. (Central Columbia) 11/4/2000 (age 23.48) #5

Jared Verse, the third of six children (three girls and three boys), grew up in Dayton, Ohio, in a basketball family (his father, Eric, played). In middle school, his mother, Jannienne, had to relocate for her career, so the family moved to North Carolina and then to central Pennsylvania.
Verse enrolled at Central Columbia High School in Lime Ridge, PA, where he was a three-year letterman, primarily as an inline tight end, while also seeing occasional snaps on the defensive line. As a sophomore, Verse posted eight catches for 147 yards and one touchdown. He helped the program to nine wins as a junior, recording 15 receptions for 340 yards and four touchdowns (22.7 yards per catch). As a senior in 2018, he earned All-Conference honors for the third straight season with 15 receptions for 385 yards on offense and 14 tackles and three forced fumbles on defense. Verse also lettered in basketball and track, winning the state championship as part of the 4x400 relay team at the 2019 Pennsylvania Championships. He also produced personal bests of 11.34 seconds in the 100 meters and 22.68 in the 200 meters.
A no-star recruit, Verse was a 205-pound tight end as a high school senior and wasn’t ranked by recruiting services. He heard from nearby Division I programs, including Pittsburgh, Rutgers, Syracuse, and Temple but didn’t receive any FBS offers. Two weeks after Verse’s final high school game, FCS Albany recognized his athleticism and growth potential and offered him his only scholarship—with the option to play defensive end or tight end. Verse saw his best long-term path on defense and signed with Albany, redshirting in 2019. Because of the pandemic, he spent most of 2020 taking online classes, working out, and adding weight at home in Phoenix (his parents moved to Arizona after his high school graduation).
Looking for a bigger stage and better opportunities (Albany went 3-12 in his 15 games there) after his productive 2021 season, which included a standout performance versus Syracuse, Verse entered the transfer portal in November 2021. He was considered one of the top players available and received more than 30 FBS offers, including from national powers Auburn, Florida State, LSU, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and USC. When he visited Florida State, Verse met with 2022 first-round pick Jermaine Johnson, who had transferred to Tallahassee before the 2021 season and became the ACC Defensive Player of the Year. Verse signed with the Seminoles and led them in sacks both of his seasons on the roster. His younger sister, Miyah, was a freshman basketball player at Georgia in 2023-24. Verse skipped the 2023 bowl game and declined his invitation to the 2024 Senior Bowl.
STRENGTHS: Well-built athlete with functional arm length ... fast, violent hands and punches above his weight class ... quick off the ball with a sprinter ment ality when attacking the corner (can see track background) ... skillfully uses a variety of chop moves (stab chop, cross chop, etc.) ... effective speed-to-power transition to blow through the blocker’s outside shoulder or cave in pockets ... flashes a closing burst on twists and stunts ... stays balanced through contact to win the point of attack and make run stops at the line ... disciplined backside pursuit ... never feels like he is out of the play, because of outstanding hustle and effort ... would drop and cover running backs a few times each game at Florida State... used to seeing extra blocking attention from backs and tight ends on the edge ... blocked two kicks (FG and PAT) in two seasons at FSU ... plays with emotion; chirping at blockers to disrupt their focus is part of his competitive profi le ... blue-collar background and has a strongsupportsystembuiltonhardwork(added40poundsofmuscleduringthepandemictomovetothedefensiveline)...greatteammate and quickly created a legacy in Tallahassee (before he transferred to FSU, he reached out to their defensive linemen to make sure they knew he wasn’t coming to steal their jobs).
WEAKNESSES: Still crafting his pass-rush sequencing ... average bender and too often finds himself past the pocket ... can get washed and late to leverage redirects ... physical finisher, but he needs to be more controlled breaking down in the pocket and misses too many tackles because of his aggressive style ... can play on his feet but lacks the sudden fluidity to consistently disrupt passing lanes when dropping ... missed one game as a junior with a left knee injury (September 2022) ... will turn 24 as an NFL rookie ... disappointing production as a senior.
SUMMARY: A two-year starter at Florida State, Verse played the “FOX” edge rusher role in defensive coordinator Adam Fuller’s 4 -3 base scheme, standing up and rushing with his hand on the ground. After receiving only one scholarship offer (Albany), he developed into one of college football’s best edge rushers, collectin g 29 tackles for loss and 18 sacks in his 25 games in Tallahassee. As a pass rusher, Verse can win with speed or power and flashes violence in his hands to break d own the rhythm of blockers. He sets a physical edge in the run game and is always around the football, because of his awareness, effort and fierce play personality. Overall, when he channels his relentless energy, Verse is as disruptive as anyone in this class, because of his explosive get-off, power through his frame and NFL-quality hand use. His physical traits and competitive football temperament give him a high floor as an NFL starter (reminiscent of ei ght-year NFL veteran Dante Fowler).

Terrion Arnold (#1 CB in class) Alabama 5116 189 lbs. 3SO Tallahassee, Fla. (John Paul II) 3/22/2002 (age 21.09) #3

Terrion (Terry-ON) Arnold, the oldest of three children, was born and raised in Tallahassee. He started playing sports at age 5, including Pop Warner football (his team was the Eagles). However, basketball was his first love and the sport he focused on throughout elementary and middle school.
Arnold originally attended Florida State University High School in Tallahassee and joined the football team as a way to stay conditioned for basketball season. He saw varsity snaps as a freshman and sophomore, playing running back, wide receiver, and defensive back. However, Arnold suffered a broken ankle in 2018 and missed most of his sophomore season. He was prepared to quit football to focus on basketball, but Charlie Ward, former two-sport star and Arnold’s head basketball coach in high school, convinced him to continue playing.
After his former Pop Warner coach, Ed Hill, was hired as the head coach at John Paul II Catholic High School, Arnold transferred to the small private school for his final two years. He played both ways as a defensive back (cornerback and safety) and wide receiver, and he had a breakout season as a junior with 103 tackles and one interception. As a senior, Arnold finished with 49 tackles and four interceptions (two returned for touchdowns) and was named first-team All-Conference and 2020 Defensive Player of the Year. He earned an invitation to the All-American Bowl. He played varsity basketball all four seasons of high school and led John Paul II in scoring (16.6 points per game) as a senior. Arnold (3.8 GPA in high school) also ran track (sprints, jumps, and relays) and set personal bests of 12.04 seconds in the 100, 23.92 in the 200, and 22 feet, 8 inches in the long jump.
A four-star recruit, Arnold was the No. 3 safety in the 2021 recruiting class and the No. 12 recruit in Florida. He ranked No. 51 nationally. Known more as a basketball recruit, he received his first football offer (Rutgers) after his sophomore season. His recruitment then exploded after he transferred to John Paul II. During his junior season, Arnold added offers from major programs like Alabama, Florida State, Georgia, LSU, Miami, Penn State, and Texas A&M. He also had several schools, including Georgia Tech and Illinois, offer him for both basketball and football. Ultimately, Arnold narrowed down his final choice to Alabama, Florida, and Georgia before committing to head coach Nick Saban (as a cornerback) on signing day. He was the No. 5 recruit in Alabama’s 2021 class (behind JC Latham, Tommy Brockermeyer, Dallas Turner, and Kool-Aid McKinstry).
Arnold talked with Crimson Tide basketball coach Nate Oats about the possibility of playing two sports, but he decided to focus on football (often played one-on-one basketball with Bryce Young after football practice). His younger half-brother (Leon Washington Jr.), the son of former Florida State and NFL running back Leon Washington, was a three-star recruit in the 2024 class and signed with Florida Atlantic. Arnold elected to skip his senior season and enter the 2024 NFL Draft.
STRENGTHS: Good-sized athlete with controlled footwork in his pedal and transitions ... outstanding route recognition and will anticipate break points before receiver hits the stem ... opens his hips easily to carry his athleticism in any direction ... above-average vertical speed but can also decelerate cleanly for sticky coverage on stop/comeback routes ... comfortably turns his head, locates and makes plays on the football ... understands how to leverage his body and use his long arms to disruptthecatchpoint,withoutdrawingobviousflags...above-averagerundefenderforthepositionandmindshiscontainangles...physicallyfightsthrough blocks and hits like a safety ... loves to compete (won’t take plays off) and carries himself with the charisma and mental toughness d esired at the position ... smart, heady player and does a terrific job communicating with the rest of the secondary ... was an outside-only corner in 2022, but Alabama asked him to play both inside and outside in 2023 (and he did so at a high level) ... played 301 combined special-teams snaps over the last two seasons and was a regular on kick coverage and punt returns ... more passes defended (26) than games played (25) in his career ... only FBS player with 12 -plus pass breakups and at least five interceptions in 202 3.
WEAKNESSES: Ordinary top-end speed — has a great 10-yard time (1.52 seconds), but a below-average “flying 20” (1.91) ... guilty of turning his hips prematurely with only average speed/burst as he tries to regain positioning ... physical play style will lead to attention from officials (two pass interference penalties in 2023 — and a few more could have been called) ... played plenty of press in college but wasn’t asked to jam or reroute at the line ... plays w ith acceptable play strength but will be driven from the play at times by blockers ... suffered a concussion in the second half vs. Tennessee (October 2023).
SUMMARY: A two-year starter at Alabama, Arnold worked primarily at left outside cornerback in former head coach Nick Saban’s scheme and would follow receivers to the slot, depending on the matchup (24.4 percent of snaps inside in 2023). After redshirting in 2021 and playing a part-time role in 2022, he led the SEC in both passes defended (17) and interceptions (five) in 2023 and grew into one of the top cornerbacks in the country. A basketball-focused athlete most of his life, Arnold is fluid when he opens up with speed, gear-down skills and body control to stay in phase with basic or sophisticated routes. With average recovery skills, he needs to continue developing his discipline versus both pass and the run, but his awareness for the football is outstandi ng, and he plays with urgency in run support. Overall, Arnoldoffersanidealblendofcoverathleticismandcompetitivemakeup,withtheballskillstomakeplaysateverylevelofthefield.Heisscheme-versatile and has the talent to work inside or outside. He can be an NFL team’s No. 1 cornerback, offering a skill set similar to that of the Chicago Bears’ Jaylon Johnson.

2024.03.31 20:12 spacefarce1301 Abortion bans are part of a proxy war by conservatives to attack progressives

This debate is marked "General," but it's actually directed mostly to PCers. PLers can still respond, but as most lack any apparent willingness to interrogate the anti-democracy policies and activities of their movement, I doubt any will engage now. So, I am focused on how PCers will respond, both personally and politically.
Impending Civil War
The evidence that abortion has long been part of a planned offensive by anti-modernist and anti-democracy religious traditionalists is readily available to those PLers, who don't stick their heads in the sand. (Which, unfortunately, constitutes a very few, given that those who aren't in favor of an 18th or 19th century religious regime, would likely not remain PL.)
As someone who was raised in a PL conservative Evangelical Christian family and church, I'm already familiar with the misogynistic aspects of the movement. Others, however, may not be aware of how such PL groups have long anticipated and salivated over the prospect of another American civil war in order to accomplish their ends of establishing a Christian theocratic government.
In 1999, the conservative New Oxford Review opined:
Either Christianity shall rebaptize the heart of the nation, or secularism shall drive out Christianity, but there will be no peace until one or the other is victorious.
Christianity is the historical source of the laws against abortion which existed prior to Roe v. Wade. When Christianity was born into the Roman empire, it made novel and severe moral demands on its converts, demands fundamentally at odds with pagan practices. The world governed by Rome used all sorts of birth control, from prophylactic to medicinal to magical, and accepted abortion (as well as infanticide, divorce, homosexuality, and suicide). Christianity rejected all of these, and as it evangelized society over the next millennium, all of these practices eventually became prohibited by law. That our society has until recently outlawed abortion (and the other practices mentioned) is intelligible only because Christianity was the historical source of our moral, and hence legal, fabric.
https://www.newoxfordreview.org/documents/the-looming-civil-war-over-abortion/
In 2019, the Guardian reported:
Asked on a podcast if the two halves of the country could remain together, Shea said: “I don’t think we can, again, because you have half that want to follow the Lord and righteousness and half that don’t, and I don’t know how that can stand.”
Shea has introduced a bill – unlikely to pass – which would criminalize abortion in the state...
In the past year, Charisma magazine, the leading media voice of Pentecostal and charismatic Christians, has run at least half a dozen articles contemplating the possibility of an imminent civil war in America. One recent article profiles pastor, broadcaster and author Michael L Brown, who blames a “coming civil war” on “militant abortionists”.
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2019/may/26/abortion-ban-rightwing-christian-figures-civil-war-predictions
Now, we see that the PL movement's mission to propagate war between the states has been fruitful. The violent ideations of its religious leaders is embedded into its history and underpin its legal and political anti-abortion strategies. This is why the movement continues to push the bar on what the country will tolerate. It has moved on from inducing terroristic attacks on clinics and now is openly calling for the execution of women and girls who procure abortions.
This is not incidental. This is part of a very systematic process, whereby the PL movement's religious male leadership is deliberately testing and probing the bounds of US democracy, by using the downfall of Roe v Wade to establish new norms that would be unthinkable even a few years ago.
The fact that they continue to push the boundaries by also attacking LGBTQ+ rights, academics, scientists, teachers, etc., indicates they are either increasingly confident that they no longer need to appeal to the left-leaning PL supporters they are using as tools to further their goals; or, they are increasingly desperate from their cumulative losses since Dobbs, and are becoming reckless as a result.
Which do you think it is? Do you have a different explanation? If the Christian Nationalist PLers fail in implementing their Project 2025, how long before they metaphorically fire upon Fort Sumter? Alternatively, if they succeed in seizing federal power, how long until blue states simply throw down the gauntlet and the war goes hot?
How will these banned state regimes implement their war strategy? Will they first target blue cities within red states? Mass incarcerations or deportations? Will they go the bounty hunter route and have them target and drag back doctors, women and girls, LGBTQ+, etc., from blue states?
Will they go the route of "The Toubles," and send terrorists into blue states to target not just clinics, but their financial centers, schools, universities, power plants, water treatment plants, and so forth?
Left-leaning PLers, which side are you going to take?

[Menagerie of Dreams] Ch. 6: No Good Roads

Cover Art Discord Server Playlist First Chapter Character sheets
The Story:
Keeping her store on Earth was supposed to keep her out of trouble, but when a human walks through her wards like they weren't there, Aloe finds herself with a mystery on her hands. Unfortunately for the human, her people love mysteries - and if she doesn't intervene, no one will. With old enemies sniffing around after her new charge, the clock is ticking to find their answers.
--------------------------
Rowen stared. His mouth was hanging open. He didn’t care.
“Dead?” he whispered. “I’m- I’m right here. I’m not dead.”
“You know what I mean.” Her voice was still soft, at least, but with an iron edge in it. “The district has mages who can create human bodies without a problem. Something close enough to pass muster, anyway.” She shook her head, rocking on the heels of her boots. “The human that you lived as is…gone. I’m sorry.”
“No,” Rowen mumbled. He pressed a hand tight to his face, bile rising in his throat. T-That can’t be right.” After all of this? Everything he’d gone through, with the finish line right in front of him? He was supposed to start Monday.
And now it was gone? All of it?
“How do I fix this?” he said, looking back to her. She’d still shot him, yeah, but in the span of a few seconds she’d changed from a somewhat-friendly opponent into his only chance at getting his life back. “How do I undo it…before…”
His heart sank. Even as he spoke, she started to shake her head harder, her eyes dropping to the wooden floorboards.
“I’m sorry,” she said again, more softly still. “It’s already been done. To undo it would create a ripple, a discrepancy to be filled. It could expose our world to yours.”
“I don’t give a damn what-”
“I know,” Aloe said. “Please. I understand.” Her hands squeezed tightly, wrapped around each other. “I don’t want this either. But…”
She looked to the front door, as if she’d find it hanging open. “The king has mages of his own,” she said. “Ones whose sole purpose is to ensure humanity never discovers us. They aren’t kind people, Rowen. And if you attempt to return to the human world, with your body already having been discovered and your mind full of our secrets…”
Hesitating, she let out a low groan. Her shoulders drooped. “They would view you as the point of exposure,” she said. “The simplest solution would be to remove you.”
She might as well have reached out and slapped him. Rowen stumbled away a step. “So…So what?” he mumbled. His years of studying. The scholarships he’d worked his ass off to get, and to keep. He’d just now made it through to the rest of his life—and she was trying to tell him it was just gone?
He took a shaky breath, locking eyes with her. “What am I supposed to do now?” he said, his voice hoarse.
Her expression softened, crumpling. “I have a plan,” she said, drifting toward him. Behind her, that green wolf-dog thing raised its head, whining. She didn’t turn. “I was able to find- a loophole. It’s not a great one, and Kyran’s too powerful. I can’t stymie him forever.”
“A plan?” Rowen said. His eyes widened. His mind had been caught in a spiral, pulling him deeper and deeper with every second, but now, he perked up. “What? What do we do?” His excitement tempered a hair as what she’d said sank in. “And…what loophole?”
Aloe looked away, creeping backward until she could lean against the shop’s counter. “Like I told you before,” she said. “This menagerie, the Dancing Dragon…it’s mine. I’m registered with the Merchants’ Accord, and I’ve been licensed as a beastmaster with the Crown Registry.”
“So?” Rowan mumbled. What did it matter what licenses she had? The shop was nice enough, he supposed, but none of that made a damn difference here.
Aloe made a face. “So, as a beastmaster, I’m able to capture and retain animals from throughout our realm,” she said.
A nasty feeling started to creep into his mind. “Wait. You mean-”
“I did capture you,” she said, flashing a wan, tired smile his way. “The royal envoy had to recognize my claim. For the time being, you’ll be in my care. Sorry.”
His mouth fell open. A beastmaster? He wasn’t some sort of dog to be bought and sold, but… One hand dropped to that metal ring around his wrist. “Did you put this on me?” he said, numb.
Aloe ducked her chin to her chest. “...Sorry. It sucks.” Shaking her head, she looked up again, steadying herself. “But it’s just the game we need to play right now. That’s all. As long as you’re within these walls, Rowen, you’re a guest, not a thing. If you work, I’ll pay you.” He saw her expression twist. “...Somehow. I’ll figure it out. We don’t have long before the deal’s up, so-”
“Until it’s up?” Rowen interrupted. The words hit him like a hammer, connecting back to what she’d said earlier. He’d stay here for the time being. “Until when? What’s going to happen?”
Aloe wobbled on her feet, folding her hands together again. “That…is a bit of a gamble,” she said. “But a safe one?”
This was his life they were talking about, not a stack of chips at the casino. “What do you mean, a gamble?” he snapped. He couldn’t afford to play around when this was his future on the line. “Isn’t there something-”
“Kyran has decided he wants you,” Aloe said, silencing him with a look. He grumbled under his breath, but subsided, glaring at her. She smiled tightly. “A lot. The envoy had to agree to my demands on some level. I could cause trouble for them if they totally ignored my rights here.”
But so much for mine, eh? Rowen bit it back, folding his arms tightly across his chest. “But,” he said flatly instead.
“But, Kyran is too powerful for one merchant’s plea to carry much weight,” Aloe said, throwing her hands up. She stalked away, and her dog clambered to its feet, trundling over to follow in her wake. “The envoy still wants you to go to him, he just wants it done in a way I can’t complain about.”
That pit yawned under Rowen’s feet again. “Wait, back there?” he said. He took a step back. His thoughts screamed to run. If he caught the bus, he could get out of here tonight. How far would he need to go?
He didn’t know, but…his memories of the last half-day were hazy, terror-filled flashes, white rooms and the flash of a needle. Voices just beyond his hearing, filled with clinical disinterest.
“I can’t go back there,” he said. His pulse thundered in his ears. “I- I’ll just have to-”
“We have fall and half of winter,” Aloe said. “After that, I’ll have to sell you back to Kyran. I don’t have a choice—but I don’t intend to sit idly and let him have his way.” He slowed, letting the steady calm of her voice bring him back down from the cliff. She held his gaze, her expression fiercely intense. “You have magic, Rowen. All we have to do is teach you how to use it. We need to learn what exactly you are. If we can do that, you’ll be considered one of the Children. You’ll be safe, forever.”
“And how hard is that?” Rowen whispered. The clouds of panic were still there, ready to flood back in at a moment’s notice. “Look, I- I don’t have magic. I’ve never done anything special. I don’t know how to do that.”
“I’ll help you.” Her words were firm, even if her eyes were still dark. She smiled tightly. “If you’ll just trust me, if you choose to stay here, I’ll keep Kyran away. And I’ll help you figure this out.” Her eyebrow quirked. “I don’t have many resources to offer, but I’m not going to give up so easily.”
Stay here? With her? Rowen glanced around the shop, his eyes lingering on the brass-edged openings in the walls, opening to dark nooks with movement flickering in their depths. His gaze dropped to the green wolf-looking thing, which padded toward him. One of its legs was stiff, twisted with scars, putting a lurch in each of its strides.
His head pounded. He bit his lip, again looking at the bizarre, unearthly room. Part of him couldn’t shake the feeling that this was all a dream, that at any moment he’d open his eyes and snap out of it. Thus far, it hadn’t happened yet.
“And if I leave?” he whispered, looking back to Aloe.
She paused, going very still. Her fingers laced together, her expression unreadable.
When she spoke again, the words were slow and measured. “If you choose to leave, I won’t stop you. I meant what I said before. You’re a guest, and an employee if you’ll help my shop. You’re not property. If that’s the answer you come to…the door is open.” She gestured toward the front of the shop.
Rowen nodded, brightening. Was she serious? Maybe he could run, then. If he kept his mouth shut, maybe it could end here. “Then-”
“But if you leave, you’ll also leave my protection,” Aloe said. “The king’s hunters would find you easily enough, and I doubt it would take Kyran long to realize you’d escaped. He will be watching.” Her eyes tightened. “He’d snatch you up like candy from a baby, and I’d have no right to claim you back a second time. I don’t know what he’s got planned, but neither your pain nor your life mean a thing in the face of his hunger for anything that could bring him power.” She exhaled, drooping. “I just…consider carefully. I don’t want you to end up cut to pieces on his table.”
The warning, together with the tone of her voice, was somber enough Rowen faltered, his hopes vanishing. “I…see,” he whispered. “And that’s it? Those are my only choices?”
He could stay here with her like some sort of pet, betting that he really did have magic and she wasn’t just totally insane—or he could run, chancing things on his own.
Neither option was worth a damn, was it?
When he looked up, she was watching him still, eyes soft. “Take your time,” she murmured, bowing her head. “Don’t do anything rash. That’s all I ask.”
And then she turned, grabbing a green scarf from the counter as she headed for the door. “I’ll be back soon,” she said.
Rowen stood like a lump, blinking stupidly after her. “W-What? Where are you-”
“I’ve got to make a call,” Aloe said. “And I’ve got to pick up some salve for Daisy’s leg. She’s friendly, by the way. Don’t let her scare you.”
Rowen glanced down. The wolf-looking thing stood just a pace away from him, panting. Those razor-sharp teeth gleamed in the lantern-light, but her eyes were glued to him, soft and eager.
“Daisy?” he mumbled. A grin curled at his lips.
The hinges of the front door creaked. He spun around.
Aloe stood framed in the open door, raising a hand. “Don’t burn the place down!” he heard her call.
“Aloe?” he said, lurching toward her. He wasn’t sure exactly what it was, but as he saw her poised to go, an urgency burned in his chest.
She paused, looking back to him. “Yeah?”
“...Why are you doing this?” Rowen said. He stumbled to a halt, hands hanging limply at his sides. “Saving me. Getting involved.” He swallowed. “Why?”
She stood for a long moment, watching him in silence. “Because I don’t hurt people,” she said at last. “Because I was the one who called Kyran, and that means your blood would be on my hands, too.” Her chin jerked to one side, ever so slightly. “And because I’ve been the target of Kyran’s curiosity before. If I can save someone from having to go through what I did, I will.” The corners of her lips curled up. “Think well.”
And then her hand was free of the door, and she stepped through, vanishing into the light beyond.
Rowen sagged, like his strings had been cut by her passing. He was suddenly exhausted, like the weight of it all was a tangible thing pressing down on him. He sank to the floor there in the middle of the room, wrapping his arms around his legs. “What now?” he mumbled to himself. His eyes burned.
A low whuff split the quiet. He looked over.
Daisy loped toward him, panting happily. She gave him a look, her eyes sharp and far too smart for any sort of dog. He shivered, shrinking away.
Whatever she’d been looking for in him, she must’ve found it, because she closed the last few steps, slamming her head into his side. Despite himself he chuckled, sinking his fingers into her lime-green fur. “This is crazy,” he whispered, ruffling the thick, wiry strands between each finger. He could feel the strength in them, like she wore a coat of steel instead of fur.
When she flopped down against his side, half-rolling to expose her cream-colored belly, he obligingly ran a hand across it, but his thoughts were a world away. This would be his easiest window of opportunity, he knew. That Aloe woman was gone. She could’ve been lying to him all along—and if so, now was the time for him to book it away, when she was away and couldn’t stop him.
But if he was wrong, and she was right, that could be his death.
Rowan let out a long, shaking sigh, looking down to Daisy.
“What do I do?”

2024.03.01 17:06 afterandalasia Taylor Swift & John Lyly [Literary References Series Part 3]

AO3 link: Taylor Swift Songs: Literary References & Parallels
Reddit links: Part 1: Sappho Part 2a: Shakespeare part 1 Part 2b: Shakespeare part 2 Part 3a: Shakespeare part 3
Content note for this chapter that it discusses sexism and rape/non-consensual contact, though more briefly than the Shakespeare chapter.

John Lyly is a less-known name from English literary history than figures such as Shakespeare, but he was certainly influential, on English language writing in general as well as perhaps in Taylor's work specifically. Born in 1553 or 1554 (such ambiguity is not uncommon) and living until 1606, he published plays, novels (including perhaps the first English language novel) between 1578 and 1597 before spending some time as a Member of Parliament. In his time, he was most famous for his novels Euphues: The Anatomy of Wit and sequel Euphues and his England (comedic and dramatic romance stories), but his plays are now much more remembered and discussed. His work includes powerful and complex female characters, commentary and satire of misogyny and societal norms, and queerness of both individuals and of relationship dynamics which surely invite a modern rediscovery and renaissance.
He is generally considered to have created the phrase "All's fair in love and war". This is directly referenced by Taylor in her prologue to her (upcoming at the time of writing this chapter) album The Tortured Poets Department which states "all's fair in love and poetry".

From his Euphues works came the style of writing now known as euphuism, or a deliberately ornate style with repeated, sometimes excessive, literary devices and allusions; it uses repeated phrases and structures, alliteration and assonance, and 'balanced' sentences in terms of the length of clauses and in the ratios of nouns, verbs and adjectives to each other. Even in its own time, it was parodied by some and copied by others, and looking online it's easy to find mainstream dictionaries aligning it with words like 'pretentious'. Euphuism was not created by Lyly, but he certainly popularised it enough that it takes its name from his work.
An often-used example of euphuism is taken from Euphues itself:
It is virtue, yea virtue, gentlemen, that maketh gentlemen; that maketh the poor rich, the base-born noble, the subject a sovereign, the deformed beautiful, the sick whole, the weak strong, the most miserable most happy. There are two principal and peculiar gifts in the nature of man, knowledge and reason; the one commandeth, and the other obeyeth.
In this section can be seen:
Euphuism also often involves
While Lyly used these skills mostly in prose and plays, it is easy to see how they would correlate well to poetry and to songwriting! Repeated sounds and phrases of similar lengths are staples of songwriting in order to fit to the melody, but the added factor of the elaborate imagery and allusions are likely what separate some songs when it comes to if they are considered euphuistic in nature. Certain of Taylor's songs, particularly those of her folklore and evermore albums, can clearly be considered part of this style of writing.
As an example, let's look at the lakes, the final song from folklore released as part of the deluxe edition. This analysis will ignore normal end-of-line rhyming which occurs in most songs.

the lakes Analysis
Is it romantic how all my elegies eulogize me? Assonance - "my" and "eulogize" both have the long I sound, while "elegies" and "me" have a long E sound
Consonance - -ies and -ize both use sibilant sounds
Rhetorical question
References - double meaning of "romantic" referencing the romantic poets of the early 19th century
Ornate language: "elegy" and "eulogy"
I'm not cut out for all these cynical clones Alliteration & Consonance - "cut", "cynical clones"
Consonance - "cut out" uses the stop of T
Metaphor - "clones"
Use of ending long O sound to draw mournful, howl/sob-like sound
These hunters with cell phones Consonance - sibilance in "hunters", "cell phones"
Metaphor - "hunters"
Use of ending long O sound to draw mournful, howl/sob-like sound
(Analysis continues in the AO3 chapter.)
There is, after all, a reason why folklore and evermore were so critically acclaimed and drew so many literary comparisons - as can be seen, just about every line contains at least one literary device, if not more, creating a very dense and intense lyric experience. Thus particularly for these albums, Taylor's writing style could certainly be described as euphuistic in nature; it could also be suggested that the Midnights 3AM tracks also draw from this literary style, particularly the extended metaphors of The Great War and Would've, Could've, Should've (which even in its title uses the phrase lengths of euphuism).

Eight of Lyly's plays survive:
Campaspe is based upon a reportedly historical figure (actual sources are unclear whether she existed or not). Coming from Thessaly, she met Alexander the Great, who fell in love with her and asked the great painter Apelles to make a portrait of her. However, Campaspe and Apelles fell in love, and Alexander kept the painting but stepped aside so that the lovers could be together. She is supposedly the model for Apelle's famous, lost but often recreated, Venus Anadyomene. In Lyly's retelling, Campaspe is a slave whom Alexander frees. Lyly's play was notable for being a drama told for its own value: it was not intended to hold higher allegory or moral/ethical lessons or reasoning. Additionally, while it is still written in the euphistic style and has poetic or rhyming passages, the play also used prose, which was again new to the era.
From a queer point of view, it is of course worth noting that Alexander the Great is nowadays widely known to have been queer (likely bisexual in modern terminology) and had relationships with men - most notably Hephaestion, who appears in the play Campaspe and disapproves of Alexander's relationship with Campaspe herself. However, this is still being argued against by people in the modern day, and seems to have only really entered discussion and acknowledgement within living memory - it was, most likely, not known to Lyly at the time.

Sapho and Phao is a play loosely based upon the supposed romance of Sappho of Lesbos and Phaon the ferryman (see the chapter on Sappho for comments on how ahistorical this likely was!), using elements of Ancient Greek Religion while using Ancient Roman religious names. In Lyly's play, Venus thanks the old ferryman Phao for his services by granting him youth and beauty; he is now so attractive that all the women of Lesbos, including (unmarried and uninterested in love) Queen Sapho, fall in love with with him. Sapho feigns illness to have an excuse to call upon him for healing, but they cannot be together due to their differences in status. Venus asks her son Cupid to make Phao fall in love with her instead, but Cupid rebels: he cures Sapho of her love for Phao but makes Phao hate Venus instead. Phao leaves the country while Cupid remains with Sapho.
It has been suggested that elevating Sappho to "Queen Sapho" was to allow Lyly to draw comparisons with Queen Elizabeth I of England (often called The Virgin Queen), and comment on François, Duke of Anjou, who had recently given up on his attempts to court Elizabeth and had left the country.
As noted in the chapter on Sappho, her narrative was heterosexualised (or het-washed) throughout much of history. It was not until in 1633 that John Donne wrote "Sappho to Philaenis" which had Sappho as writing to or about another woman once again. (Sidenote, this is discussed in an episode of the Lesbian Historic Motif Podcast for which I read the transcript and which sounds utterly fascinating.) Nonetheless, it has been suggested that there are queer themes to be found in the play. Venus's desire for Phao leads to her fixated interest in Sapho, an example of the triangulation of desire also discussed, appropriately, in the Sappho chapter. Moreover, the general concept that Sapho was not interested in a relationship until Phao, artificially and magically made beautiful, entered, could easily be read with an aspec or lesbian interpretation that Sapho's interest in him was essentially forced and not natural to her.
Compare to: Midnight Rain ("he wanted a bride, I was making my own name")
Gallathea (sometimes spelled Galatea) is a romantic comedy set in ancient Greece and using Ancient Greek religious figures with Roman names. Because Neptune demands a virgin sacrifice every five years, two men both disguise their beautiful daughters Galatea and Phillida as men and send them to hide in the woods. The two girls meet and fall in love despite their disguises. Meanwhile, Cupid causes trouble by disguising himself as one of Diana's nymph and causing several of the nymphs to fall in love with Galatea and Phillida, to Diana's fury. Diana and Venus argue, while Neptune is angry that girls are being hidden from him and rejects the offered replacement girl as not attractive enough; Diana returns Cupid to his mother and Venus persuades Neptune to stop asking for sacrifices. Galatea and Phillida are both revealed to be girls but state that they are still in love; Venus approves and offers to make one of them a man so that they might remain together. The epilogue says that love is both infallible and all-conquering.
In contrast to the implicit queerness of Sapho and Phao, it is easy to see why Gallathea is acknowledged as an early queer play in the English language! Galatea and Phillida fall in love as women, and Venus states her approval of it even with her offer to transform one of them to a man. This transformation does not take place onstage, but whether it does or not the end result is queer - either with a trans character, or two sapphic ones. The desire of the nymphs for the women, although sparked by Cupid, plays into the gender transgressions of crossdressing that would continue to be explored in later plays, including very famously the works of Shakespeare.
The choice of the name Galatea is also interesting from the point of view of Ancient Greek Religion. There are three Galateas in the lore - one a nereid and not highly relevant, but the second the statue created by Pygmalion who was brought to life to Aphrodite, while the third was the mother of Leucippus who was raised as a boy and later transformed into a man by the goddess Leto (mother of Artemis and Apollo). So this name has two potential references - either to the construction of the self as related to romantic relationships, or for its relationship to queer gender narratives.
It has been suggested that the interesting complexity of Lyly's exploration of gender on stage was a response to, and perhaps made possible by, Elizabeth I of England's position as ruling monarch, unmarried and without children. Elizabeth I ruled as Elizabeth Rex (literally meaning King Elizabeth in Latin, to indicate herself as queen regnant rather than queen consort). The only previous potential ruling queens in English history had been Matilda, whose declaration as heir led to The Anarchy which was 25 years of civil war and disorder, or Elizabeth's older sister Mary who is still known as "Bloody Mary" for the number of Protestants who were killed during her reign. Elizabeth I of England proved that English ruling queens were even possible - although she walked a fine line to be able to do so. From the song The Man, through July 2018 when Taylor Nation posted a picture of a concert crowd with the caption "Taylor is the 📷 of our ♥'s!", through Phoebe Bridgers calling Taylor "king of her craft" in a BillBoard interview to December 2022 when both Phoebe Bridgers and Gracie Abrams called Taylor "King", Taylor has also pushed at the boundaries of what is considered acceptable for a woman in the modern media and music landscape but also seems aware - and even fearfully aware - of the potential limitations around her, of "fucking politics and gender roles" (Question...?).
Several versions of Gallathea (generally amateur) can be easily found on YouTube - they make for interesting watching!
Compare to: ...okay, actually I don't have a good comparison for this one. But you could probably have some fun with Mine ("I fell in love with a careless man's careful daughter"), Ours ("they'll judge it like they know about me and you"), or Snow on the Beach ("weird, but fucking beautiful").
Endimion, the Man in the Moon (sometimes spelled Endymion) uses reference to Ancient Greek and Roman Religion, and to English folklore, but diverges the plot significantly to make contemporary allegories. It is considered the most impressive of his works. Endymion falls in love with Cynthia, the queen, and begins to neglect his lover Tellus who is among Cynthia's ladies-in-waiting. Angry, Tellus has a sorceress bewitch Endimion into sleep; Cynthia realises and has Tellus imprisoned while sending various people to look for a cure for Endymion. Endymion's friend Eumenides returns to say that a kiss from Cynthia will wake Endimion; this works, but he is aged and his memory damaged. When Endymion explains that his love for Cynthia is chaste and sacred (a reference to courtly love), she accepts it, and her blessing restores his mind. Various figures are forgiven for their roles and pair off. It has been discussed whether this represents a happy ending for the couples, or whether Lyly is commenting on the impossibility of fair male/female relationships in heteropatriarchal societies, as Lyly was unusual among writers in presenting singlehood (especially single women) positively. Lyly's repeat presentation of competent and happy ruling queens without male guidance or control was unusual, although it is worth noting that as Cynthia arranges the pairing-off of other characters she reinforces the heteropatriarchal structure as it applied to everyone except her - rather than breaking the system for all, she has only been able (or is only willing) to do so for herself.
Cynthia is, ultimately, uninterested in romance and stresses that the kiss she gives Endimion is an aberration - in a modern setting, it would be quite easy to read this as being aroace (aromantic-asexual) in expression. Endimion, meanwhile, expresses being quite happy with this relationship, which could also in a modern setting be considered in the light of asexuality or aromantic spectrum orientations (potentially lithromantic) or being framed as a queerplatonic or platonic-focused relationship.
Compare to: Untouchable ("it's like a million little stars, spelling our your name"), and for the dramatic female revenge on men see Better Than Revenge.
Midas is more closely based on the Ancient Greek story of the same name. King Midas first asks Bacchus to have everything that he touches turn to gold, then after it proves a curse removes it by washing himself in the river Pactolus. He then favours Pan in a musical competition, causing Apollo to give him a donkey's ears; his sensible daughter prays to know how to remove it before letting her father know that he needs to repent for his foolishness at Delphi. While this play keeps fairly close to the Ancient Greek story (with the exception of adding Midas's sensible daughter), it is also generally considered to be a reference to Felipe II of Spain who inherited Spain while it was deeply in debt and managed to make it seem far more rich through his exploitation of the indigenous peoples of the Americas and their gold. Having no major romantic plots, this play does not particularly attract the attention of queer theory scholars, although feminist scholars note the addition of Midas's daughter as the figure who solves the second issue.
Mother Bombie (drawing from ballad/folklore figure Mother Bumbey or Mother Bumbie) is unusual among Lyly's works for its complexity, for its lack of classical (especially ancient religious) references, and the fact that it is believed to be largely original rather than drawing from any existing story (including Italian novels which inspired many English language plays during these centuries). It has a complex plot which includes a pair of lovers who disguise themselves in order to marry despite the wishes of their fathers, and a pair of young people who are being matchmade by their fathers for financial reasons with the fathers attempting to manipulate each other. At the end of the play, it is revealed that the young pair whose marriage is being arranged are actually siblings, their mother Vicinia having swapped them at birth with children of rich households, and the two children Vicinia has raised are unrelated and therefore able to be together in the love that had been developing between them but hidden because they feared it was incestuous. The title character, Mother Bombie, is largely an outsider to the events, but is considered the cunning woman of the village (she denies being a witch) and many of the characters seek her advice or assistance.
Compare the pair of lovers fighting to be together to: Love Story, Ours, Don't Blame Me
Compare the role of Mother Bombie, as narrator and cunning woman, to: ...Ready For It? ("they're burning all the witches, even if you aren't one"), Mastermind ("all the wisest women had to do it this way"), Dear Reader, and to the structure of folklore which blurred the line between fictional and real stories with Taylor taking the narrative role across them.
Love's Metamorphosis (drawing loosely from Ovid's Metamorphosis but with large original subplots) is a drama with romantic subplots. Three nymphs spurn the love of three humans, and Cupid punishes them by turning them into inanimate objects as requested by the humans. Meanwhile, a peasant angers the goddess Ceres, is punished, and ends up selling his daughter; the daughter escapes, disguises herself as a man, and rescues her lover from a siren. Cupid and Ceres agree to release the nymphs and remove the curse from the peasant man, the nymphs are at first uncertain but confirm that the humans love them as they are and do not intend to change their personalities, and all four couples are married.
In Act II, Scene 1, Ceres and Cupid discuss the nature of love in an interesting manner. Cupid says that he considers the most desirable traits of women to be "In those that are not in love, reverent thoughts of love; in those that be, faithful vows." and says that the "subtance of love" is "Constancy and secrecy". (Compare Paris and "romance is not dead, if you keep it just yours"; Dear Reader and "the greatest of luxuries are your secrets".)
The presentation of the relationships between the nymphs and humans is complicated, and understandably uncomfortable from a modern perspective. The nymphs initially make it clear that they do not want relationships - Niobe enjoys flirtation and attention but does not want committed monogamy; Nisa does not desire any relationship and considers herself superior to those who do; Celia is more concerned with her own beauty than with any sort of relationship. In Act V, Scene 4, when they are changed back, they initially say that they would rather remain inanimate objects than be forced into relationships, and Ceres has to beg them to accept the men. Niobe warns Silvestris that she will likely be unfaithful to him, to which he replies only that he does not wish to be told about it; Nisa warns Ramis that he might love her, but she will not love him or express affection, and he accepts it; Celia warns Montanus that, like a rose with its thorns, at times she will be pleasant to him and at times hurtful, and he accepts it. All three nymphs also warn the men that Cupid will be just as capable of punishing them if they do not keep their word in the future. While these relationships cannot be considered consensual, they are also an unusual subversion of the usual romance arc of "character flaws" being "fixed" before the individuals enter a romantic relationship - the men must accept the nymphs as they are under pain of godly punishment, even if as they are is unfaithful, unloving, or sometimes cruel. Set alongside the relationship between Protea (the cross-dressing daughter of the cursed peasant) and Petulius, who discuss their relationship and whether it will stand the test of time and acknowledge and accept each other's perceived flaws (Petulius was initially taken in by the siren; Protea is not a virgin), the pairing-off of the nymphs with their respective 'suitors' provides its own sort of antithesis within the story.
Plays of this era - and future ones - very often ended with multiple weddings, and the pairing-off of great numbers of characters. In modern terms, people may recognise the "Pair the Spares" trope at play! Lyly, at least, seems to underscore the absurdity of the nymph-human relationships, and gives the nymphs distinct personalities and desires.
From a queer theory reading, Protea not only cross-dresses but takes the more active role in escaping the merchant to whom she is sold and rescuing Petulius, though her ability to avoid the siren's call does seem to underline that she is not attracted to women. She behaves in a gender-non-conforming way for the era, and speaks to Petulius about not being a virgin which would have been significant for the time. Ceres is underlined as not being in or desiring a relationship (though not that Proserpina is referenced in dialogue, implying that Ceres is a mother), another positive portrayal of a single female leader, while Nisa could be read as aspec and comfortable only with another person desiring her without expecting it to be requited, and Niobe essentially states that it will be an open relationship.
These strong and varied female characters, the multiple-marriage ending, and the classical religious references do all align with Lyly's work, although due to the lack of farce/comedy it has been suggested that this is a revised or later version, not Lyly's original script. Its exploration of female consent and non-consent, from the nymphs who enter dubiously consensual marriages to the dryad whose tree is cut down and who mourns while dying that even in chastity she was not able to escape male violence, is also consistent with other Lyly works which make bold statements about how both societal expectations and acts of male violence are imposed upon women's bodies. It is honestly pleasantly surprising to see such acknowledgement from an early male writer, as anyone who has attempted gender-related discourse even in the modern day will have witnessed how these expectations and violence remain factors in the twenty-first century despite denial of their existence (especially, though not always, by men).
Compare discussions of female agency to: mad woman ("No-one likes a mad woman, you made her like that"), The Man ("When everyone believes ya, what's that like?")
Compare the lines drawn by the nymphs to: ME! (Okay, I'm joking a little on this one. But maybe not entirely.)
The Woman in the Moon is generally believed to be the last of Lyly's plays, and was written in blank verse. (Read at the Internet Archive, page 230) Four shepherds complain that they do not have a woman, and ask the goddess Nature to give them one as a companion; she obliges and creates Pandora, giving her the best parts of all seven celestial bodies (as then listed - the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn). However, the seven celestial forces war over her, influencing her moods and behaviour, scaring and threatening the four shepherds even as they fight to try to claim a monogamous relationship with her. Eventually, unable to cope, the shepherds beg Nature to take Pandora away again, and she chooses to be with Luna since they are both variable in their behaviours.
The character of Pandora is a remarkable one, carrying the action and presenting various moods and desires across the performance. Although it has been accused of being misogynistic, some scholars have put forward that it is in fact about misogyny and the absurd expectations placed on woman - the four shepherds go to Nature to essentially ask for a sex doll, and are unable to cope with receiving a person with moods, desires, depression and anger, sexual autonomy and frustration at being followed around by the four men. Pandora at one point declares "I cannot walk but they importune me". Pandora is created by the female character of Nature, and at the end joins the female character of Luna - but before she does so, she talks about how she desires parts of each of the astrological figures, and how she does not simply have one aspect of herself but contains many facets. It is very easy to see how a skilled actor of any gender could make the play into a critique of patriarchal demands upon woman, as the shepherds have gendered expectations of her from before she has even been created, further implying their artificiality.
The play all but demands comparison to mad woman, with its expression of anger from within the cage of femininity, but also to seven ("I used to scream ferociously any time I wanted") and perhaps to the manner in which Taylor has portrayed and explored duality and plurality in her music videos and lyrics. Though most marked from the reputation era onwards - ...Ready For It? contrasting the free, cybernetic Taylor with the caged ever-changing one; Look What You Made Me Do featuring at least fifteen different Taylors onscreen at once; Anti-Hero becoming Taylor's dialogue with herself - it is clear that Taylor has actively engaged in a cycle of reinvention in her 'eras' since at least Red (2012-2014). In her Eras tour, her dancers onstage perform as previous versions of herself in glass cases, with Taylor surrounding herself with her own previous forms. Having also discussed how media and social pressures used to influence her behaviour - in 2016, she discussed with Vogue how she stopped publicly dating for some time due to the media narratives about her as a "man-eater" or "serial dater" - certain of Taylor's lyrics also discuss what it is to be influenced and even controlled by powers and narratives around her.
Compare to: mirrorball ("I'll show you every version of yourself tonight"), peace ("Would it be enough, if I could never give you peace?"), ME!, The Man (which Taylor described as "If I had made all the same choices, all the same mistakes, all the same accomplishments, how would it read?"), The Lucky One ("they still tell the legend of how you disappeared, how you took the money and your dignity and got the hell out"), Don't Blame Me ("I play 'em like a violin, and I make it look oh so easy") or Castles Crumbling ("People look at me like I'm a monster").

2024.02.18 14:49 sonofabutch No game until Saturday, so let's remember a forgotten Yankee: Don Gullett

"We feel Gullett is a modern Whitey Ford." -- Yankees GM Gabe Paul
Left-handed pitcher Don Gullett died on Wednesday. There were a lot of stories about him last week that focused on his time with the Cincinnati Reds, but he also was a Yankee.
Younger fans might think that the Yankee signing free agent pitchers with injury issues began with Carlos Rodon, or Carl Pavano, or Pascual Perez... but it all started with Donald Edward Gullett, one of the first big-name Yankee free agent signings, whose Hall of Fame trajectory career sadly ended at age 27 due to recurring shoulder problems.
Gullett was born January 6, 1951, in Lynn, Kentucky, a tiny town (population 67, according to an article in New York Sunday News Magazine) about 110 miles east of Cincinnati. He was one of eight, three boys and five girls, and attributed his great natural strength to doing chores around his family's farm. He made All-State in football, basketball, and baseball at Southshore McKell High School, and once threw a seven-inning perfect game in which he struck out 20 of the 21 batters. On top of that, he graduated near the top of his class and married a cheerleader!
Gullett turned down scholarship offers in basketball and football after he was drafted with the #14 pick in the first round of the 1969 amateur draft by his hometown Cincinnati Reds. (The Yankeees could have taken him with the 11th pick that year, but instead we took previously forgotten Yankee Charlie Spikes.) The Reds sent him to their A-ball team, Sioux Falls, where he went 7-2 with a league-leading 1.96 ERA. The next year, the 19-year-old was in the bigs, the youngest player in the National League.
On April 16, 1970, Gullett had an eye-popping debut -- getting the win while pitching five scoreless innings and having a triple, a walk, and a stolen base as a batter. Over the rest of the season he'd mostly pitch out of the bullpen, going 5-2 with a 2.43 ERA and 76 strikeouts in 78 innings. He also tied a league record by striking out six consecutive batters as a reliever.
Gullett was promptly nicknamed "Smokin' Don" both for his blazing fastball and his cigarette habit. At 19, he was said to be the hardest thrower in the National League and was already drawing comparisons to Sandy Koufax.
After an impressive sophomore season -- 16-6, 2.65 ERA (124 ERA+), 1.194 WHIP in 217.2 innings -- in 1972 he said he felt sick, couldn't eat, and was tired all the time. He went 9-10 with a 3.94 ERA, the only losing season of his career. Doctors eventually diagnosed the problem as hepatitis.
Over the next two years, Smokin' Don rebounded by going 35-19 with a 3.27 ERA and 1.180 WHIP, re-establishing himself as one of the league's top starting pitchers. He was still just 23 years old.
“Barring an injury, he is almost sure of making the Hall of Fame. With Gullett’s body and the way he stays in shape, I know he’s going to pitch until he’s at least 35. So, doing that you know he’s going to win at least 250 games with the start he has. And anything over 250 has to rate a pitcher serious consideration for the Hall of Fame.” -- Reds manager Sparky Anderson in 1974
Ah yes, those three little words... "barring an injury." After 1974, Gullett would never be fully healthy again. In 1975 he missed two months after getting hit on the hand by a line drive. The following season, he was shelved by neck spasms and then shoulder inflammation. His shoulder would bother him for the rest of his career.
After the 1976 World Series -- in which he won Game 1 over the Yankees, 5-1 -- Gullett became one of baseball's first free agents under a new system worked out by the owners and the Players' Association. There were two dozen free agents available, and Gullett was seen as one of the biggest names.
It wasn't free agency as we know it now, but a wacky system called the "re-entry draft." To bid on one of the 24 players available, you first had to draft him -- or rather, draft the right to talk to him. Up to 12 teams could draft the same player. If three or more teams drafted him, only those teams could negotiate with him. But if drafted by two or one -- or none -- the player was truly a free agent and could sign with anyone.
Gullett, who had started Game 1 of the World Series the previous two seasons, was one of the most coveted pitchers and was selected the maximum 12 times. He eventually signed a six-year, $2 million deal with the New York Yankees, making him the third-highest paid player on the team behind fellow free agent signings Catfish Hunter (five years, $3.75 million) and Reggie Jackson (five years, $2.96 million).
The Yankees started Catfish in the season opener and previously forgotten Yankee Ed Figueroa in the second game. "The Two Million Dollar Man," as the New York press had dubbed him, made his Yankee debut in the third game of the season, a Sunday afternoon game at Yankee Stadium. Gullett pitched well, only allowing two runs, but Milwaukee's Moose Haas was better, only allowing one, and the Yankees lost 2-1.
Then it got ugly. Gullett was bombed in three straight starts, giving up 17 runs on 20 hits and 13 walks in just 15.1 innings, and then... he got hurt. Pitching on a wet mound in Baltimore, Gullett slipped and fell while delivering a pitch, hurting his neck as well as his ankle. He missed two weeks, but when he came back he looked a lot better, going 5-0 with a 2.78 ERA over his next six starts. His sore shoulder flared up again at the end of July, and he missed six weeks... then returned to go 4-1 with a 2.48 in September.
Overall, Gullett went 14-4, a league-leading .778 winning percentage, with a 3.58 ERA (111 ERA+) and 1.301 WHIP in 158.1 innings.
That year in the playoffs, Gullett was bombed in Game 1 against the Royals, giving up four runs on four hits and two walks in two innings as the Yankees lost 7-2. Manager Billy Martin blamed Gullett's poor start on his shoulder and speculated he might be done for the season. Gullett didn't pitch again in that series -- which the Yankees won, three games to two -- but he did return for the World Series, going 8.1 innings in a 4-3 win over the Dodgers in Game 1, then just 4.1 innings in a 10-4 loss in Game 5. (Reggie Jackson's three consecutive home runs in Game 6 won the World Series!)
In 1978, Gullett's ailing shoulder was so bad that he missed all of April and May. Knowing shoulder surgery would end his season -- if not his career -- Gullett turned instead to Dr. Maurice Cowen, the team physician. Cowen was an orthopedic surgeon who performed a "shoulder manipulation" to break up scar tissue in Gullett's shoulder. According to the August 28, 1978, issue of something called Peephole Magazine:
The doctor put Gullett under anesthesia and stretched and manipulated his aching shoulder, freeing an adhesion that had kept him from cocking his pitching arm.
Seemingly rejuvenated, Gullett finally made his debut on June 4. He lasted just a third of an inning, giving up two runs on three hits and a walk, including a home run to the first batter he faced. Then he seemed to be back to his old self, and at the end of June he was 4-0 with a 2.68 ERA in 37.0 innings.
But it didn't last long. He suffered his first loss of the season on July 5, giving up three runs on eight hits in seven innings against the Texas Rangers. Then, with just three days' rest, he started on July 9 against the Milwaukee Brewers.
According to Baseball's Who's Who of What Ifs (2021) by Bill Deane, Gullett's shoulder was bothering him before the game, but he tried to pitch through it:
"My shoulder felt a little funny in my warm-ups," Gullet recalled, "but that had happened before. I didn't think anything of it. Then, I couldn't get anybody out."
Gullett gave up four runs on three hits and four walks in just two-thirds of an inning, and was pulled. No one knew it at the time, but the 27-year-old had thrown his last pitch.
He went back to Dr. Cowen for another shoulder manipulation, but this time it didn't work. Ultimately Gullett was diagnosed with a double tear -- the front and back -- of his rotator cuff, and I have to wonder if Dr. Cowen did more harm than good with his shoulder manipulations.
Repairing a torn rotator cuff is still a difficult procedure, but in 1978, it was practically a death sentence for pitchers. Murray Chass in The New York Times wrote:
A torn rotator cuff, especially for a pitcher, is not like a dislocated tendon or a pinched nerve. It kills pitchers’ careers. Right now, two players representing an investment of $4.4 million, Gullett and Wayne Garland of Cleveland, are trying to come back from torn rotator cuffs.
Dr. Frank Jobe had already performed the surgery on Garland, another big-name free agent signing that year. Garland, who over the two previous seasons had gone 33-26 with a 3.18 ERA (115 ERA+) in 515.0 innings, underwent surgery on May 5, 1978, and was back on the mound 11 months later. But he went 13-26 with a 5.02 ERA over the next three seasons and was released. (The Yankees signed Garland to a minor league contract in 1982 as he attempted a comeback as a knuckleballer, but he went 1-3 with a 7.48 ERA and his playing days were over.)
Gullett, who underwent surgery on September 29, had an even worse outcome than Garland did. A 15-minute workout during Spring Training in 1979 was so notable it earned a story in The New York Times -- the headline read "Yanks Are Cheered By Progress" -- but it was not to be. The following year he tinkered with various mechanical changes, including switching to a submarine delivery. But his fastball, clocked in the mid-90s even by the slow guns of the era, was now around 80 mph. "It eats my heart out not being able to participate," Gullett said in 1980. He couldn't even attempt rehab starts in the minors.
The Yankees finally released him at the end of the 1980 season, though his contract ran until 1982.
After his playing days were over, Gullett returned to farming, growing tobacco... and maybe other stuff, as police found marijuana growing there in 1977. His brother, who helped him operate the farm, was arrested on drug charges.
Smokin' Don, who according to reports smoked three packs of cigarettes and drank a gallon of coffee every day, suffered a heart attack at age 35. A few years later he had a second heart attack, but after triple bypass surgery was able to return to baseball as a pitching coach from 1990 to 2005. He died February 14 at age 73.
Gullettins
"I always felt when I took the mound that I would win every game. I'll always wonder what I might have done with seven or eight more years. It's the goal of every player to get into the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown. I'm not saying I would have or could have made it. But we'll never know." - Don Gullett
In just two years with the Yankees, Gullett was 18-6 with a 3.59 ERA (108 ERA+) and 1.340 WHIP in 203.0 innings, for 2.6 bWAR. Coincidentally, he averaged 2.5 bWAR per season over his full nine-year career. We can only imagine how much he would have helped the Yankees if he'd remained healthy, or even as healthy as he had been in 1977, for all six seasons of his Yankee contract.
