2024.05.16 20:35 Dontaskabout6-17-11 I want to learn the banjo- any song suggestions?

I’ve been the guitar for about two years and I inherited and banjo and I want to learn how to play it. I like to think I’m pretty decent at finger style on the guitar so I think that’s a good segue into clawhammer, so some suggestions would be nice, but if I should start with more beginner stuff like chords, that would be good to know. I prefer folk over country but it would also be cool to play some banjo covers of rock songs. I’m have a decent grasp on music theory so translating guitar tabs into banjo tabs shouldn’t be too difficult, but specific suggestions for songs would be appreciated. If this is the wrong subreddit for this lmk, thanks!

2024.05.16 19:05 Minimum-Clerk-7142 When to quit?

Hi folks. I'm beginning to suspect I will never get any better at playing the banjo, so my question is: should I quit?
Background: I started practicing Scruggs style banjo during the pandemic (June 6th, 2020). Since that point, I've practiced 30 minutes a day, every day (more or less). At this point I've practiced just shy of 800 hours.
I had a teacher for about 18 months (virtually), have tried an in-person teacher (once), play with a metronome, practice both technique and song playing, have tried both TAB and playing by ear. Where I mostly struggle is the technical: I just can't move my hands cleaning and quickly. I'm beginning to suspect I have nerve damage or something.
When I bring this up online, people say "practice very slowly. Like really slowly." And it turns out their "slow" is faster than I'm capable of!
Now I don't expect perfection. But I don't even feel like I'm progressing. I'm willing to put the time in to master this beautiful instrument if there's a light at the end of the tunnel, but I'm beginning to lose hope. Surely there are people who are incapable of playing three-finger style. How can I tell if I'm one of them?

2024.05.16 11:07 Sharp-Dig4502 What on earth is the proper tenor banjo tuning?!

So I recently got handed down an old banjo that I've been trying to tune. I don't know if it's a tenor or just a regular 4 string or if there's even a difference, but I'm 60% sure it's a tenor. The app I downloaded says the standard is CGBD but the internet says CGDA and now im even seeing DGBD, i just have no idea what's right. Also any links to tabs and such would be helpful since I'm not finding many, they don't have to be beginner songs because I'm moving to banjo off of guitar so I already have experience with stringed instruments.

Picked up the banjo recently and started out with tabs but I've been told that the proper way to play banjo is by ear. I've been trying to play by ear recently but it's not fully clicking, does anyone have any tips?
Edit - I should note that I have a 4 string banjo

2024.05.13 00:13 SalamiMommie What’s your weirdest experience from a show?

I seen a post recently where people talked about their worst experience, which had plenty of feedback. I’d love to hear everyone talk about their weirdest experience at a show. Maybe it is from something you’ve seen in the audience, a conversation you had, gear messing up, a song request.
Me and my brother played a show last night for a very packed out bar. It arguably was one of our best shows.
He went to go close out his tab and get our pay and I was carrying some gear to my truck. I came back and he was talking to an older man with long white hair, but bald in the front and he had a long beard to match it. He looked like Santa Claus somewhat.
They had a great conversation and he told us he’d love to play banjo for us and we’re all just talking for a few minutes. He shakes our hand and leaves.
I carry some more gear out and he’s parked next to me. Someone in a muscle car is Reving up his car while he drives by slowly. Some people are outside and saying things such as “cut that shit out.”
This man just begins laughing and it sounds like “oh, ho ho ho.” He does it multiple times too.

Phish, Friday 04/29/1994 (30 years ago) Boatyard Village Pavilion, Clearwater, FL, USA
Gap Chart, Tour: 1994 Spring Tour
Set 1 : Halley's Comet , You Enjoy Myself 1 > Fast Enough for You > Scent of a Mule , The Sloth , Divided Sky , I Didn't Know 2 , Dog Faced Boy , Split Open and Melt 3 > Sanity > My Mind's Got a Mind of its Own > Llama
Set 2 : Suzy Greenberg > Maze , If I Could , Reba 4 , Fee 5 > Uncle Pen , Mike's Song > I Am Hydrogen > Weekapaug Groove , I Wan'na Be Like You > Hold Your Head Up , Cavern
Encore : Fire
1 No vocal jam. 2 Fish on Madonna washboard. 3 Unfinished. 4 Simpsons signal. 5 Trey sang verses through megaphone.
Jamchart Notes:
You Enjoy Myself - Crazy, very strange version. (No B&D; or VJ.) Nice segue into "FEFY."
Fast Enough for You - Though not perfect, Trey gets paid by the note in this one, including during its mighty peak and conclusion.
Split Open and Melt - Excellent variation in the playing, including a nice quiet section, dissonance, pounding, and an amusing section with the band members all yelling "Yee Haw!!" No real ending but instead a > to "Sanity."
Fee - All band members play a flurry of notes several times before the > to "Uncle Pen."
Mike's Song - A typically fiery, intense '94 1st jam breaks into great rhythmic, medium intensity playing, which mellows into some super melodic Trey-led jamming with hints of "MLB." Collapsing to drums, the jamming returns to "Mike's" proper to conclude.
Show Notes:
There was no vocal jam in YEM, as the song melted into FEFY. I Didn't Know featured Fish on Madonna washboard. Split Open included teases of Ice Ice Baby and was unfinished. Sanity was played for the first time since May 17, 1992 (202 shows). Reba contained a Simpsons signal. Trey sang the verses of Fee through a megaphone.

Gap Chart, Tour: 1993 WinteSpring Tour
Set 1 : Split Open and Melt , Uncle Pen , The Sloth , Runaway Jim , Horn > Llama , Glide , Rift , Fee 1 , Run Like an Antelope
Set 2 : Chalk Dust Torture , It's Ice > Ya Mar 2 , Mound , Big Ball Jam > Reba , Mike's Song > I Am Hydrogen > Weekapaug Groove -> Makisupa Policeman -> Weekapaug Groove , Hold Your Head Up > Terrapin > Hold Your Head Up , The Squirming Coil
Encore : My Friend, My Friend 3 , Sweet Adeline
1 Trey sang verses through megaphone. 2 Funny stage banter as Trey tried to bring "Leo" in too early. 3 Beginning featured Trey on acoustic guitar.
Jamchart Notes:
Run Like an Antelope - Rocking version includes a brief jam on Pink Floyd's "Money" (4:45 - 5:20) followed by fantastic, very exploratatory jamming. Intense conclusion to the jam with Trey just shredding away.
Mike's Song - The strong 1st jam includes jamming that hints at "Crossroads," before breaking into a repetitive, grundge-like Mike and Fish-led groove. The 2nd jam sounds very much like an early stab at what would evolve into "Simple" the following year, played atop a similar groove to the 1st jam, and then ends in a ripping and intense manner.
Weekapaug Groove - Excellent jam with Theme From Bonanza and "NICU" teases, as well as strong and unusual melodic content -> to the first "Makisupa" in 320 shows (last seen on 11/26/90) before -> back to "Weekapaug."
Makisupa Policeman - -> in from "Weekapaug." "Makisupa" makes its first appearance in 320 shows (last seen on 11/26/90), amidst a strong "Weekapaug." -> back to "Weekapaug."
Weekapaug Groove - -> in from the first "Makisupa" in 320 shows. This section includes great "Can't You Hear Me Knocking" ("CYHMK") teases, exploratory jamming and a shredding peak. All in all, another great '93 "Weekapaug."
Show Notes:
Some of the fans cheered the mention of Quebec during Fee, which featured Trey singing the verses through a megaphone. Antelope included a brief jam on Pink Floyd's Money and a tease of Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy by Page. Chalk Dust contained Money and Lazy (Deep Purple) teases from Trey. Ya Mar contained an I Can't Turn You Loose tease from Page and funny stage banter as Trey tried to bring "Leo" in too early. Page teased Gimme Some Lovin' in Mound. Sanity was teased in Reba. Hydrogen included a tease of Jingle Jangle Jingle, with a bassline somewhat akin to Happy Trails. Weekapaug included the theme from Bonanza and Can't You Hear Me Knocking teases from Page and an NICU tease from Trey. Fish dedicated Terrapin to his friends from Burlington who made the trip to see the band. Makisupa was played for the first time since November 26, 1990 (323 shows). The beginning of My Friend featured Trey on acoustic guitar. Mike teased the Beverly Hillbillies theme in the soundcheck's Reggae Jam.

We Do!
Encore : Fuck Your Face 3
1 First known Phish performance; Jeff Friedberg on saxophone. 2 First known Phish performance. 3 Debut.
Jamchart Notes:
Makisupa Policeman - This version features a short jam with nice interplay between Page on the organ and Trey starting after 2:30; it's lilting and pretty. Then it sort of plods along for a few minutes, but a nice second jam emerges at about 5:30. Good -> "Antelope," too.
Timber (Jerry the Mule) - Debut. First version includes a four minute jam before the final verse with that familiar dark vibe to it.
McGrupp and the Watchful Hosemasters - Another early version with a jam following the lyrics and composed sections. This one is quite rocking and has a great vibe to it.
Show Notes:
This show featured the debut of Fuck Your Face and the first known Phish performances of Take the 'A' Train, Timber (Jerry), The Ballad of Curtis Loew, and Come On (Part One). 'A' Train featured Jeff Friedberg on saxophone. The Fuck Your Face debut was in dispute for many years, though the Phish.com setlist file seems to confirm that the song was indeed performed on this date.

2024.04.21 13:28 faultysocks Cant sign into xbox 360 accounts (xbox one s)

Had been playing Banjo Tooie just fine, then about two days ago it refused to connect to xboxlive when I booted it up through game pass. So I looked online, talked to xbox support and my isp but nothing seems to have fixed it. I think the problem is my NAT type being moderate, these are a couple of things I have tried:
• Tried changing all the setting in the networking tab on the console, tried different ports, the QoS tag settings, and changed a couple of the other advanced settings
• Did a factory reset and wiped all the xbox 360 local data
• Turned of UPnP on the isps app, left the console and router of, then turned it back on after 3 minutes
Have phoned my isp and they said they will try somthing, but that NAT type is a hard thing to change. At this point, not sure what else I can do to be honest. Guess I will just have to wait until something about my network or isp changes? Like a new device set up ect.Properly sucks as I mainly bought the console for the backwards compatibility.
**Edit managed to get this working with the most scuffed workaround-hotspoting a phone, for some reason this set it to open, I have no idea how but seams to be working for the moment

2024.04.15 01:38 ban_joee Keys and Scales 🪕

Hello! 👋🏼
I’m diving into music theory for the banjo and am struggling a little, I was hoping some fellow banjoists would be able to help me out, or point to resources that they believe will help me out (I play primarily Scruggs style). I am also less than a year into learning music of any kind, so if this is a dumb question or doesn’t make any sense, I apologize.
So, I understand the twelves notes that make up an octave, and how the scales work within those twelve notes.
I also have a basic understanding of the Nashville numbering system ie. I-IV-V. I get that most songs follow that progression so most songs end up being G(I) C(IV) D(V), because they are written on the G major scale.
This is where is start to get unsure:
The banjo is tuned to an open G, so am I playing in the key of G?
The reason I ask is because I’ve noticed that if I capo at the 2nd fret (and I know a barre cord at the 2nd fret makes an A chord), and tune the 5th string a whole step up to A (adding to the A chord), it makes sense that I am now playing an open A, right? But I can play my GCD songs the same as before and they still sound (more or less) the same, just slightly higher. Am I now playing in the Key of A? Am I playing an A major scale with the same I-IV-V progression?
Essentially, what is the difference between a key and a scale? Why does moving everything up a whole step still work for all the songs I know? Am I changing the key or the scale? If I am changing the scale, why does a lot of the tab still say a G chord is the open chord, even though I've moved everything up a whole step?
Thanks in advance for any help provided!

Phish, Friday 04/14/2023 (1 year ago) Climate Pledge Arena, Seattle, WA, USA
Gap Chart, Tour: 2023 Spring Tour
Set 1 : Blaze On -> Plasma -> Blaze On , Vultures , Sample in a Jar , Ya Mar , Steam > My Friend, My Friend 1 > Walls of the Cave > Ghost
Set 2 : A Wave of Hope , Bouncing Around the Room , No Men In No Man's Land -> Golden Age , Martian Monster , The Wedge , Bug > Back on the Train
Encore : Fluffhead
1 No "Myfe" ending.
Jamchart Notes:
A Wave of Hope - A cloud of uncertainty hangs over the early stages but Fish keeps things afloat with constant forward motion. Around 12:00 the jam begins to gradually emerge from darkness with Trey wielding his guitar like a blazing beam of light cutting through the gloom as it builds and builds to a series of peaks.
Golden Age - Tight, airy play hews closely to the song proper for quite some time before Trey calls for improvisational departure. Fish breaks the beat - listen, a bit after the 8:00 mark, for this wonderful moment - before the groove bleeds to become hushed, restrained play, evoking early (as in 60s) psychedelic experimentation. And then... memorable almost for what doesn't happen as opposed to what does, this is Phish at their seemingly effortless best, bathing the base with another dose of the finest in the nation.
Fluffhead - Arrives in fine fashion with an unusual modulation, giving the outro a "YEM"-like twist before returning home at 14:54 to close the show.
Show Notes:
My Friend My Friend did not contain the "Myfe" ending. Trey teased The Secret of Life (The Dead Milkmen) in A Wave of Hope.

Encore : Rocky Top
1 Random Note signal. 2 Acoustic, without microphones. 3 Debut; acoustic, without microphones.
Jamchart Notes:
Run Like an Antelope - One of those great probing versions that leaves "Antelope," comes back briefly, leaves again, home again, off again, etc. etc.
Show Notes:
Antelope contained a Random Note signal. YEM featured a guest trampoline jumper pulled from the audience taking Trey's place in the tramps routine. Nellie Kane and Dog Faced Boy, which made its debut, were performed acoustic and without microphones. Mike teased Sunshine of Your Love in Nellie Kane.

Gap Chart, Tour: 1993 WinteSpring Tour
Set 1 : Buried Alive > Poor Heart , Maze , Bouncing Around the Room , It's Ice > Stash -> Kung -> Stash , Kung 1 > The Horse 2 > Silent in the Morning , Divided Sky , I Didn't Know 3 , Golgi Apparatus
Set 2 : AC/DC Bag , My Sweet One , Tweezer , Mound , Big Ball Jam , You Enjoy Myself -> Spooky Jam 4 -> You Enjoy Myself , Harpua 5 > Runaway Jim
Encore : Lengthwise > Contact > Tweezer Reprise
1 Trey used an acoustic guitar to improvise on the intro to Horse. 2 Trey on acoustic guitar. 3 Fish on Madonna washboard. 4 Included a verse sung by Page. 5 Narration centered on a story about people who steal your dreams at night.
Jamchart Notes:
Stash - "Stash" -> "Kung" -> "Stash." The jam is typically great Spring '93 stuff with exploration beyond the norm. Returns, seemingly to conclude, then heads out again for more exploration, winding up in the Land of "Kung."
Kung - -> in from "Stash." Great combination, a tense, improvisational "Stash" paired with "Kung" in the middle, which includes "DEG" jamming. -> back to "Stash."
Stash - -> in from "Kung" to conclude this excellent version of "Stash."
You Enjoy Myself - Excellent jam segment -> to a "Spooky" sandwich.
Spooky - -> in from "YEM." A "Spooky" jam is sandwiched in this "YEM" jam. -> back to "YEM."
You Enjoy Myself - -> in from "Spooky" as this excellent "YEM" jam continues.
Show Notes:
Kung segued into a Dave's Energy Guide jam before turning back into Stash, which also featured Kung quotes. The second Kung was recited while Trey, using an acoustic guitar, improvised on the intro to Horse and contained a brief Pinball Wizard jam. The second Kung and The Horse featured Trey on acoustic guitar and the intro to The Horse contained a Harry Hood tease. I Didn't Know featured Fish on the Madonna washboard. At the beginning of the second set, Trey's friend Roger Holloway got on stage and asked his girlfriend Jen to marry him. She said yes, and in response the band played AC/DC Bag (which references Roger in the lyrics), which also included Woman from Tokyo and Johnny B. Goode teases from Trey. The Spooky Jam inside of YEM included a verse sung by Page. Mike teased Spooky in the return to YEM. The YEM vocal jam included a Jeopardy! tease. Harpua featured teases of Dream Weaver and The Jetsons theme as well as vocal quotes from The End (The Doors); the narration centered on a story about people who steal your dreams at night. Trey dedicated Contact to Roger and Jen "on the road of life." This show was released as part of the St. Louis '93 box set.

Show Notes: In honor of the 15th anniversary of the launch of Phish Food ice cream, Ben & Jerry's and the WaterWheel Foundation partnered to host this gathering in downtown Burlington that purported to be, as the name would suggest, the "World's Largest Cowbell Ensemble." Led by Jon Fishman, the gathering attracted roughly 1,600 participants. Whether the ensemble was indeed the largest of its kind is still being confirmed by the Guinness Book of World Records. Most of the proceeds from the event were donated to WaterWheel Foundation's Vermont Flood Recovery Fund, which helps to repair the devestation left by Hurricane Irene. Prior to the performance, Mike made an appearance at Ben & Jerry's and signed copies of his Steamroller Wheelies: A Restoration Convoy compilation, also benefitting Vermont flood recovery.

2024.04.11 21:01 Different-Ticket-478 DIY Tablature Help: I have the melody, Now what? (Also free tab, I guess?)

So It's been about a month since I bought my 1st banjo and after finishing Josh Turknett's two-finger thumb lead course, getting some licks & simple songs under my belt, and learning more about actual music notes & where they line up on the fretboard, I tried making a banjo tab for a song I love.
It's Witch Doctor by The Cartoons. To be honest, I didn't really want to make a tab, but I couldn't find one anywhere so I kind of had to (I can't pick notes out by ear yet). After a day or two I finally puzzled through the entire melody, which is right here.
Be warned: the tab itself is pretty rough (it's just a .txt file). But It's legible enough for me to have learned 70% of the song so far (The interlude hurts).
As great as it is to hear on the banjo, Just playing the melody doesn't carry that "banjo vibe". I was hoping to get some help with adding things like drone notes, pinches, slides, hammer-ons, and the like. As a beginner I really have no idea what to replace or where, and all my attempts so far have been... Less than pleasant.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
