The most effective study methods for academic success boil down to:
Time management There are countless time management techniques, but one beautiful thing about going to school is that a lot of your time is managed for you.
The week and when you need to be in class is arranged.
Professors tell you when assignments are due, etc.
Heck, when I was in university they even gave us calendars for use to write in our due dates.
So the number one thing is to combine what you know with the tools everyone has: the calendar.
In many cases, you can also get advanced notices from professors by simply talking to them before the semester even begins.
You would also do well to explore techniques like the Eisenhower Matrix, time blocking and the Pareto Principle.
Above all, make time management something you study unto itself.
There's no one-size-fits-all approach. But those who study it as the discipline it is will win.
Study Environment Optimization Studying effectively cannot be random or subject to interruptions.
If you have to study on transit, invest in custom ear plugs of the kind musicians use, not noise-cancelling headphones that will put you at risk in the case of an emergency. Custom ear plugs have filters that let you still hear without being bothered by shrill noises and you can switch between light and heavy filters.
Having multiple study locations worked out in advance is a great strategy because you can walk between them and percolate your thoughts – literally remembering more by simply getting in a bit of exercise. I used to call this "Road Work" when I was in university.
When at home, put a "Do not disturb" sign on your door. Make it clear to others that you are studying and train them to respect the hours you want to put it. Do not compromise. It's your future.
Note-Taking Strategies There are many different kinds of note-taking methods. My fave is to use Zettelkasten in combination with Memory Palaces.

These accelerated learning techniques may feel like you're building an airport in the beginning, but think about it:
You do need airports to launch and land planes as effectively and efficiently as possible. It's the same with memory techniques.
You can also do yourself a favor and learn more about memory science. It will teach you about how the mind and memory work and give you ideas that will only arise if you know a little bit about what researchers have found.
Stress Management For Students Don't make my mistake. I drank like a fish and ate poorly throughout university. This meant that a lot of the experience was lost to depression.
Sure, memory techniques helped… but I can't help but imagine how much more successful I would have been during and after if I'd had better ways of coping with the stress.
Diet, fitness, mindfulness practices, time off with friends for positive and healthy recreation. This is not complicated, though when you're young, impulsivity can certainly make it seem that way.
Exam Preparation Strategies This basically comes back to properly using your calendar and memory techniques.
For the benefits of what is sometimes called state-dependent or context-dependent memory, it can be useful to study where you will take your exams. It's advisable to use Memory Palaces based on these exam rooms whenever possible.
(Those terms are the kinds of insider memory hacks you'll enjoy only when you understand your memory science, and there are many more that can help you with your exam prep.)
Take mock tests as much as you can. Reflect on what you're learning often. Talk about it with other students.
Don't cram and avoid wasting time on the fantasy that there are any "subject-specific study tips." Maybe if you're in nursing school and need to have patient bodies in specific position, but generally tests are about words, numbers and symbols. Learn how to commit them to memory and talk as much as you can about the information so it is well-exercised before you sit for your exams.
Form Effective Study Groups There are many benefits to group study if you can select solid group members. This can be tricky, but one way to do it involves a slightly involved strategy:
Try to be part of a club or association. I was president of the English Undergraduate Student Association at York University in Toronto, for example. This drew precisely the right people because anyone who wanted to be part of the association already loved English Literature by default.
After you find the right members, it's just a matter of scheduling regular meetings based on decent agendas and following reasonable time limits so you don't burn out.
One thing my fave study group in university did a lot was to share reading. In other words, we'd each tackle an article or book and then present on it.
Ultimately, you still have to do the reading yourself, but it forms a nice mental framework that makes reading faster and easier when someone you can speak with has summarized the core ideas. These days, you can search YouTube and podcasts for this kind of summarization much of the time, but it's still not the same as being in a study group with other people.
You also get experience with peer teaching and tutoring this way, which is hugely beneficial for your memory. Even if you never intend to teach yourself, the simple effort that goes into preparing and delivering short presentations will benefit you in the short-term for your exams and long-term in your career. Collaborative learning also gives you something powerful to put on your resume, especially if your study group is linked with a formal university institution or group.
Work On Your Reading And Comprehension Skills The main shortcut here is to simply read a lot, boost your vocabulary as you go by memorizing terms and write summaries as much as you can.
Doesn't sound like a shortcut, I know. But it really is. It helps develop pattern recognition and that's how you ultimately wind up quickly assessing the key points and inferring many things correctly.
Be humble, though. Mistakes will always happen, so be willing to go back and read things again.
Another key aspect of reading is to challenge yourself. Get outside of your comfort zone and read above your level at least a few times a week.
Don't worry about whether you understand what you're reading or not. Soon, moments of insight will arise.
Even if it doesn't happen soon, rest assured that will. There are aspects of philosophy that didn't come clear to me until after 30 years of reading. I'm not ashamed of this at all. I just haven't read and reflected enough to connect the dots. But if I had read above my level sooner, I probably would have had the insights sooner.
Motivation and Discipline Technically, motivation is not necessary when you have systems. That's what discipline is all about.
That said, it's useful to know about intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. These will be arranged differently in different people as some people respond well to threats of pain whereas others respond better to promises of reward.
Know thyself.
Hire a coach if you have to, as it will be worth it in the end. Many exist and some universities have behavioral science programs, learning disability labs and other institutions where you can learn more directly about these issues.
Finally, you can learn about the difference between tonic and phasic dopamine relative to how the Default Mode Network of your brain is in a kind of battle with the Task Positive Network. This area is kind of heavy on the brain science, but well worth an afternoon or two to figure out the implications in your life.
Just watch out: When optimizing your dopamine levels for motivation, you could wind up enlightened and have your ego make you think you're better than everyone else… which would not be enlightenment. But it'll sure feel that way.
That's why the next category is so important.
Make Time To Learn Critical Thinking A lot of education involves humans who weigh what they teach and how they teach it based on subjective agendas. It's pretty difficult for anyone not to do that.
When you spend some time developing your critical thinking skills, you'll be able to determine when teachers and writers/video creators, etc. are being too subjective or otherwise slaves to any number of cognitive biases.
Likewise, you'll be able to spot them in yourself and weed many of them out before they can distract you.
The simplest way to use critical thinking while studying is to put Why, Where, When, Who and How up on a Memory Wheel and constantly rotate through it.
As you learn more about different thinkers, you can also start to ask, "What would Freud say about this? What would Skinner say? What would x say?"
To do this, study as many of the sciences and Liberal Arts as you possibly can. If you don't know where to start, go through the Trivium and then the Quadrivium. Knowing how to think through those seven lenses and ask what the major figures in each field would generally say will help you "triangulate" just about any issue and think both objectively and subjectively about it and know which is which.
Self-Assessment And Improvement Ultimately, the best judge of your progress is you.
To make sure you're giving yourself good materials to judge yourself by, journal, ideally daily.
If you can, keep two journals:
A snapshot journal that simply lists what you did on a particular day.
A discursive journal where you reflect on your thoughts about how things went.
There are many formal products you can buy that will help you journal in particular ways. The Freedom Journal has been one of my faves, but the real tip is to experiment with as many journaling styles as you can in the two main styles I just mentioned.
As you can tell, there's not that much when it comes to embracing a wide number of learning strategies. Apply these tips to the study resources you need to cover on your way to the exam room and you'll do well.
Take Care Around Technology And Studying There are tons of apps that can help "gamify" these activities, but at the end of the day, gamification is really just a mental metaphor. If it doesn't work for you, find a better metaphor.

Personalize as much of the journey as you can, constantly applying critical thinking to every suggestion you come across and all of your study experiences will become much, much more rewarding.

Psychologically I feel as if I have recovered from Ana. Not only do I not desire to drop weight but I'm trying my best to gain it, I even go to the gym yet, every couple of weeks or so, I loose it all again. The reasons are varied, I skip a gym week and my appetite dissapears, I fall in love with my crush as we send eachother songs and loose my appetite, or I simply forget to eat because I'm studying or can't bring myself to cook, or for example when I'm gaming I can forget to eat too, although screen time usually triggers my appetite after a while, so does masturbating.
I don't fear food nearly as much as I did before, so when this happens I start to eat foods I would never have dreamed of eating when I was at my worst, such as chocolate, cakes and desserts. Anything that has a lot of calories and is easy and addicting to eat, because I have to rebuild the mass I lost as fast as possible and I know I need the help of "unhealthy" foods (please notice the brackets, everyone here should probably be eating more of those btw lol)
But it's simply scary how fast I drop weight without even thinking about it, without even wanting it, with an earnest desire to gain it yet I still loose it. I'm not too scared because I always gain it back with conscious effort, eating and exercise. But when I noticed this pattern I actually got scared. Can anorexia be so inherently built into me that I will always have to make a conscious effort to eat food and gain and maintain my weight? The tendrils that anorexia have on me are insane, how can it still have a hold on me when I'm actively trying to gain weight and feel like I'm mentally recovered? It's almost as if this type of Ana is like an invisible ghost that keeps popping up while I'm trying to build muscle and fat. Anyone with this experience?

Hi all,
Anyone else find that their sleep problems get worse after exercise?
I know this goes against the general wisdom that exercise makes you sleep better, but I'm quite sure this is happening and has been for more than 20 years. I've been poo-pooed and told it must be mental. It isn't. My mental health is the best it's been in my whole adult life. I started exercising two days ago after recovering from covid, and I've had two nights of highly disturbed sleep. It's not a coincidence, this happens every time. I think it's a big part of the reason that I crash 3-5 days into starting exercising. I crash, I stop exercising, and I keep deconditioning.
It twigged for me today that this could be dysautonomia-related.
On the days that I exercise or am otherwise more active, I will usually feel tired and want to go to bed earlier, but often have more problems falling asleep and will always wake up more in the night, and often be unable to return to sleep. I always have some level of insomnia, but it gets markedly worse. Generally, all my exercise is done before 3pm, so it isn't too close to bedtime.
When I say exercise - my current plan from my exercise physio is for a 15m walk, 15 minutes of stretches and 15 minutes of yoga, which I stagger throughout the day. Twice a week I swap all of this for 30 mins of 1-on-1 pilates. My program is completely strength and co-ordination based atm, no cardio, but cardio has set this off in the past too.
Anyone else noticed a similar pattern in their bodies?

2024.06.01 23:01 Local-Goose3089 [Routine Help] 30m Completely at a loss - Very reactive, red, acne-prone combination skin, Almost all products cause reactions and breakouts.
30m with very reactive, red, combination, acne-prone skin with 17 years of failed attempts. Generally have extreme oil production on head and face, but instantly becomes dry and flaky if I don't moisturize.
First thing in the morning I have limited oil and far less redness, it gets progressively worse throughout the day. Breakouts are generally medium-large size and sometimes in small groups - usually in the same general areas. Skin feels very tight, oily, and irritated. Face flushes with temperature changes, humidity changes, and emotional changes.
My back and shoulders have been very broken out for years (regimen/past attempts below), although my chest stays almost 100% clear.
I know the first answer is to talk to a dermatologist. I'm trying to but it's hard in my area, and I'm skeptical after trying 5 dermatologists in the past who always just prescribed medication that caused major irritation and didn't work well.
I'm just putting this out there to see if anyone else seems to have similar skin and found things that have worked.
Assuming the big issues are: - Damaged skin barrier - This reflects my current regimen below, but I can't seem to make progress. Being so limited with products/ingredients that I trust makes it difficult. I've endlessly compared product ingredients but can't find a pattern of what irritates (hard to find any products that work to get a knowledge foundation)
- Possible Rosacea or Seb Derm - Skin is super reactive to products, temperature changes, and humidity changes. Although it's a uniform redness and isn't patchy - feels more like a full-head flush or reaction. Face is a completely different dark red shade than the rest of head/neck/body
- Allergies / Food Sensitivities - Have had bloodwork in the past that didn't show anything drastic - working on booking another. Also looking to check for thyroid issues.
Current: - Only wash face PM (twice a day increases redness/tightness)
- Either just room temperature distilled water or MCT oil cleanse (c8, c10 MCT)
- Eucerin 5% Urea Moisturizer - the only recent moisturizer that I trust
- Thin layer of Vaseline
- Shower AM - Panoxyl or SA cleanser only on back 2-3 times/week with showerhead filtered water
- Cerave SA Lotion on back afterwards
- Gentle physical exfoliation once a week
- Eucerin Urea or Vichy sunscreen on face afterwards
- Extremely low gluten/dairy/sugar diet - mostly chicken/veggies/eggs
- Vitamin d3 + B5 Pantothenic Acid
- Spearmint Tea, Collagen + Electrolytes, MCT Oil in coffee some days
- Change pillowcase every 2 days, change sheets every week, use towels once, 100% cotton undershirts, wear shirts once - shower and change clothing immediately after exercise/sweat
- Drinking lots of water daily - all Brita-filtered
- Humidifier, Air Purifier
- Very gentle when washing and applying products
- Showerhead Water Filter

Too many people give the same generic advice to problems that require more concentrated thinking or focus.
"Think outside the box." is bad because the "box" could be ANYTHING. Not helpful and yet many people say it often in creative spaces since it's a nice buzzword.
"Think outside of your thought patterns."
is fantastic because it gets the same point across as the "box" one and someone can now understand what they should be doing when coming up against future problems. Look beyond what you've already been thinking / believing / trying in life for new perspectives and ideas. It encourages you to question those thoughts and to delve deeper into the "why."
"Work Hard." is extremely damaging because many (like myself) will take it as working hard alone will solve all issues in life.... It won't and it's because this phrase is missing another half of it to make sense.
"Work Efficiently and Optimize your process."
This is as clear and concise as you can get. Work smarter. Find any inefficiencies and understand "why" they're happening and how to improve them to make the process easier for yourself. This way you can revise what is and isn't working and refine what brings you closer to your goals in life.
"No pain No gain." is dumb because life is meant to be a process going from "hard to engage with" to "Easy and efficient to complete" when it comes to tasks. We're meant to be adapting to the situation or exercise - not making it harder to keep up with over time.
"Easy Efforts to overcome mental barriers"
It sounds worse and less motivational - but doing "easy efforts" that make the task you're doing less strenuous and leads to more commitment / focus compared to burning yourself out quickly by using "pain" as a benchmark for effort or succeeding in life. If the task is too hard then step back and find ways to make it "easier" to do. Maybe you're holding the dumbbell wrong or doing pushups with your back arched. Really life doesn't have to be painful for you to make progress in anything.
There's many many more I could break down here - but I know this won't be a universal opinion people share lol.

Part 69 Date night (Part 1) (Part 68) [Help support me on Ko-fi so I can try to commission some character art and totally not spend it all on Gundams] Only a few hours had passed since the short training session had ended and yet Nul'trula felt ready for more. It had only been two and a half hours of actual simulated combat, after all. With the expanded capacities of her new shell, she hadn't even reached the point of either stress or processor lag while engaging with hundreds of targets, countering thousands of munitions, and ensuring her four team teammates had all the support they needed to persevere. It almost felt like a game to her, and one she was naturally good at. Though Nula had already sworn to herself that she would never willingly bring harm to people, that essential aspect of morality was a fundamental part of her base code, she couldn't help but enjoy the thrill brought by that combat simulation.
Though the enemies she battled were controlled by a sapient being, a rather kind one whom she considered a friend, they represented an evil that once threatened all other life in the galaxy. If only her creators had taken the safe precautions with Hekuiv’trula that they had with her, maybe things would be different. However, as Nula’s mind had expanded in her shell far beyond her wildest expectations, she had been decompressing long stored away files regarding the Artuv'trula species. And those lost memories revealed more and more about a past that she wished she had left forgotten. Regardless of how kind and loving the team of scientists were who created her base code and instilled within her a drive to protect all living things, they were a part of a government who mistakenly saw their state, a mere social construct, an idea made manifest by the will of those participating in it, as the final and ultimate expression of the Artuv’trula people, culture, and species.
How could an artificial intelligence programmed with the express purpose of bringing something as fleeting and amorphous as an idea into infinity become anything other than the end of its own creators? How could a being whose sole created purpose was to ensure the continuation of a concept, but not the people who embodied that concept, become anything other than deranged? If people, cultures, and political systems change, which they all inevitably do, then how could an AI purposefully made to preserve one specific state, nothing more than the fleeting whims of an ever-changing people, do anything other than what it was programmed to do? Where Nula was explicitly designed to cherish all life, her brother's purpose was to ensure the Gytiom Infinite Hegemony would live on throughout all time and space. It was only a matter of time until Hekuiv would realize that the Artuv'trula were not immutable, they would change, and the Gytiom governmental system would be replaced by something else. And when that non-sapient, barely-sentient military control and management AI came to that inevitable conclusion, it was already far too late to stop it.
Even with her mind as clear and robust as it now was, Nula'trula hadn't yet consciously connected the fact that her lust for new experiences was directly related to her deep down desire to remain ignorant of the worst aspects of her creator's history. Her readiness to engage in more combat simulations, to see all the sights The Hammer had to offer, and engage in any activity which could keep her processors fully engaged were all just as much desires to have fun as they were a means to keep herself distracted. In moments like these where she could keep herself occupied with enjoyable thoughts, there was no need to wallow in an unchanged past. Instead, Nula was focusing all of her consciousness towards the present.
Having just walked out of a movie theater and into a clothing store with the company of Melatropa, one of her first true friends, the only things on Nula's mind were what she had just seen and what kind of clothing styles she should experiment with. The hour-long animated film featured a simple but effective art style, a single androgynous character reminiscent of and relatable to a dozen species, and a story focused on the struggles of one's own mind while surrounded by nothing but nature. Despite not being able to truly empathize with just how difficult base survival really was for a biological being alone in the wild, the meaning and intended message of the film had hit its mark. The battle outside one's soul was often far less brutal than the one fought within. However, at the current moment, that lesson was only to be applied to the rather innocuous clash between material choices for the outfit that Nula was to wear on her first ever date.
“Ooo! Are these furs?!?” Slowly making her way through a wide selection of clothing materials, Nula stopped in front of a particular section that peaked her interest in an innate way that far surpassed the almost endless display of fabrics she had been perusing. “Are they all from real animals?!?”
“Well, they're synth-furs.” Melatropa answered with a soft but quite deep giggle. “Either made out of manufactured polymers or cloned material, both of which are produced on demand to reduce the storage requirements. But yes, they are all based on real patterns from animals throughout the galaxy. The one you're looking at right now is actually from the bal'amuro of my people’s homeworld. A mighty feline predator that hunted my ancient ancestors just as we hunted them. But as we developed our weapons technology and grew in numbers, they were nearly pushed to extinction. While tens of thousands of years of conservation has guaranteed they will live on with a stable and healthy population, possession of actual bal'amuro fur has been outlawed for so many generations that the only remaining examples reside in the wild, in zoos, or in museums. If I remember right, this stuff is cloned from a preserved cloak that rests in the museum in Ten’txutcan.”
“I can see why your people covet this material so much.” The canine android’s voice trailed off as a distant memory, or rather an ancient and highly compressed bit of stored data pertaining to her creator's history, began to resurface. However, thanks to her vastly upgraded processing and memory she was able to continue on regardless of the fact her mind now bore the burden of remembrance. “A gold that simultaneously shimmers and absorbs light, spots of pinkish red that would be nearly invisible at night, and… Oh… This deep blue underskin is simply gorgeous. I presume this is outside of the budget Admiral Atxika gave us?”
“I'm not going to tell you what our budget is. But…” The large and muscular blue woman shot Nula a coy wink before letting her crimson red eyes wander down the display of material samples. “Let's just say we can afford it so long as you don't try to fill your entire closet with just this. Besides, you gotta consider how it'll look with the synth fur you wanted Banitek and Agothocli to cover your paneling with.”
“I was actually still considering my options with that.” Nula struggled to pull herself from the artificial golden panther fur but quickly found herself making her way down the aisle while affirming something she had discovered earlier. “None of these quite match what I wanted for my shell. You see, while my creator's did sport a wide variety of colors and patterns in their fur, I was looking for something quite specific.”
“Oh? Is there someone specific you wish to emulate?”
“Well… I guess you could call an ancient deity someone. But, yes. My name, Nula'trula, was derived from my creator’s ancient Goddess of Life and Love, Nula'somia. She was imagined as having a short but dense coat of glistening, pearlescent white fur that was as soft as silk and with a red-gold mane and flowing locks.”
“I'm not exactly sure about how to acquire the mane and hair… But that fur you're describing does remind me of something.” Mela turned towards the large blue woman standing behind the counter and shouted towards her with a cheerful tone. “Hey, Luniviria! Do you have a moment?”
“Oh, we don't need to bother her. Didn't she already tell us that all the materials she had available for her garments were on display here?”
“She keeps some special stuff in reserve for her more well-informed clientele. And if you're going on your first date night tomorrow, then this definitely calls for something special!”

“Do any of you three actually do any work on this ship?” Banitek paused his hammering and asked the avian, mustelid, and primate who were lounging about in his workshop. “Or do you weenuks just hangout all day waiting for something to do?”
“I mean, it kinda feels like that sometimes!” Tens retorted with a vigorous, full-bellied chuckle.
“I don't know about Binko, but Tens and I were running training with some of the Qui’ztar honor guard a few hours ago.” Hompta added with a high pitched and squeaky tone. “But speaking of working, what have you been up to, Binko? I haven't really seen you for like a week!”
“I've been studying for my pilot's license renewal.” The deep purple avian had his tablet in one of his claws and was reading from it rather intensely. “Which reminds me, Tens. You need to get your co-pilot license renewed soon. Tarki already has all the paperwork done for you, you just need to study for the written test so you can pass.”
“Have the regulations changed?” The Nishnabe warrior shot an overly confident look towards Binko, who ignored it. “Because if not, then there's nothing I need to study for.”
“It's a fifty question test from a bank of a thousand.” Binko's vibrant blue eyes slowly lifted from his tablet as an incredulous expression befell his feathered face. “Are you really trying to tell me you remember all thousand answers after eight years?”
“Go ahead, test me!”
“Alright!” The deep purple avian quickly flicked through the list of questions he was studying and picked one that he felt would challenge his friend and co-pilot. “If a vessel loses power to its primary and secondary control thrusters while in the process of docking, what is the procedure?”
“While the pilot uses tertiary control thrusters to arrest all movement, the co-pilot contacts the station's flight controllers to declare the emergency.” Much to the surprise of the Kroke, Kyim’ayik, and Hi-Koth, the Nishnabe warrior, a man who had made it a mission in his youth to avoid school at all cost, was able to respond without the slightest shred of hesitation. “The controllers will attempt to confirm the malfunction with their sensors, specifically looking for any potential of explosion or hazardous material leak. Assuming there are no immediate threats to the station, the controllers will then deploy tug-drones to either bring the vessel into the originally assigned dock for repairs or, if there is the potential for hazardous material contamination, the drones will move the vessel to a safe temporary dock where emergency repairs must be undertaken before the vessel can dock into the station-proper. Then there's a few more steps that have to do with diagnostics and specific repairs, but I'm pretty sure those would fall under the questions about how to address control thruster failure that aren't specific to port docking.”
“Binko, don't tell me he got that right!” Hompta blurted out while staring daggers at Tens.
“Fine, I won't tell you.” Binko retorted with soft cackling while shaking his head and scrolling to a new question. “I'll tell Bani. Hey Bani, Tens got that question right.”
“Of course he did!” Though Banitek was shocked at how quickly and effortlessly Tens was able to answer such a technical question, this was not the first, or even hundredth, time that he had seen this mostly hairless primate display an unpredictable amount of knowledge. “The guy's got the memory of a Muritoph but can't remember his own birthday most of the time.”
“I think it's in a couple months.” In stark contrast to his confidence when answering Binko's question, Tens actually looked a bit confused as he tried to remember both the current date and the date of his birth.
“It's in six weeks and you're turning twenty-four, you weenuk!” The furry little beaver-otter half shouted with frustration obvious in his voice. “I swear, niji! If your parents and goko didn't call you on your birthday every year, you'd have no idea how old you are!”
For a few moments, Banitek's workshop was filled with laughter from four different species. Despite having grown up together on the same station, going to the same school, having the same caretakers, and even considering each other as family, there were certain aspects of each individual that were wholly unique to their species. Where Binko was incredibly quick witted, his Kroke brain able to mentally process thoughts at rate far higher than most other forms of Ascended life, both Hompta and Banitek, with their larger but less densely packed brains, were able to maintain multiple trains of thought at the same time. However, much to the continued surprise of them and all other non-human persons who spent any amount of time among the Nishnabe, Tens was able to effortlessly switch between rapid recall, multiple trains of thought, or even utilize both at the same time. And while the almost comical tendency for this Nishnabe warrior to forget things which many considered to be incredibly important on a personal level, the fact he could immediately answer a practical question from a subject he hadn't specifically studied for in years was somehow even funnier.
“Hey, so, back to my original question.” Banitek was the first to slowly get his deep and roaring laughter under control. “How much work do y'all actually do on this ship? At least one of you has been here everyday since I opened this shop.”
“Well… As a member of the security and combat staff, I'm pretty sure my contract stipulates that I'm always on-call.” Even if Tens couldn't remember every single word of the contract he had signed when joining the First Independent Fleet of the Third Qui’ztar Matriarchy, he could still instantly recall the most important parts. “But I am required to log a minimum of five hours a day, five days a week, or thirty hours total a week of training whenever I'm not deployed on a mission. And that includes physical training. But I usually don't log stuff like my morning exercises or if I'm just messing around in the sims. I also get compensated with additional time off after extended missions.”
“Yeah, this Qui’ztar Fleet is way more serious about time off than the Nishnabe Militia.” Hompta added while struggling to get his high pitch chortling under control. “As a member of the engineering and support staff, I'm also on-call if I'm needed. But I have the same amount of required work hours. As long as I log thirty hours, I'm getting paid good!”
“I'm technically part of the diplomatic staff so I don't really have required work hours.” Binko's comment drew a rather harsh glare from his friends which he didn't notice because he had already gone back to studying from his tablet. “My hours are whatever Tarki tells me my hours are. But if I'm with the love of my life, I can't really consider that working.”
“Eeeeee! Lover-boy over here!” Hompta sarcastically chided his avian friend as he found a new reason to continue his wild laughter.
“Alright, so, what do y'all do when you're not working then?” Bani rolled his eyes at the Kyim’ayik who already had children but had not yet even considered getting married to any of their mothers. “If y'all only have to work thirty hours a week, what are you doing to fill time on this ship?”
“I flirt with the Kyim’ayik women onboard!” Hompta announced with a cheeky smirk and seemingly endless giggling. “And there's that fishing spot, a bunch of shopping, and all kinds of different entertainment venues. I took one of the ladies from reactor control to a movie the other day and I got another date night lined up with her tomorrow!”

I am a 23 year old woman, diagnosed with ADHD, autism and giftedness. My life has always been terrible. I never managed to fit in anywhere. I suffer a lot from stimuli and since I was little I've always had a lot of suicidal thoughts. I don't know what to do with my life. I recently lost a friend who also had all three disorders and this made my depression even worse. I'm in a good college, but I really want to drop out. I learn things very quickly and lose the desire to continue once I learn the patterns. Nothing brings me joy. Not even reading that it was at least my escape, I'm achieving more. I live alone and I can't eat, cook, clean the house or feel like doing anything. I don't know how to be okay. I try to have new hobbies, but I get tired very easily. I have peaks of joy that disappear quickly. Most of the time I feel like I'm just fooling myself. I try to go to therapy, but I don't feel well. I have taken many medications and they never helped me. I exercise, I don't eat unhealthy things, whenever I'm sad I try to do something, I keep a diary, I feel and think about my feelings, I practice meditation, I go to a Buddhist temple. But there is still a lot left. My dream is to live in the middle of nature, but I don't even know how to support myself financially. To this day I've never been able to work, because I suffer from a lot of anxiety about anything that makes me test. I do poorly in college because I can't stand the environment, because I see something that I really like (knowledge) being taken as something important for companies to profit from. I love nature, but I feel very distant from it. I live in a big city, and I suffer a lot thinking about the trees, the plants, that breathe this polluted air and suffocate from the noise pollution and also from the lights. I don't stop thinking, I'm always questioning myself, and I can't stop it. I just want to be okay, but I don't know how. My feelings are very strong, also my sadness.

Sorry for the throwaway account but this is deeply personal and I don't want it on my main account.
I'm 23, F, and trapped in my family home. I don't know how to drive, I've never worked before and I didn't finish secondary school or go to college due to health issues.
I live rurally and I'm have been utterly helpless for the past 4 years. I'd take any job but I have no experience, and my mother beats the optimism out of me whenever I want to apply for work.
Ever since I was roughly 16, I've taken small courses on just about everything to try and fill up my CV. Barista, Horticulture, IT, Hairdressing, Animal welfare, but it doesn't matter. Whenever I bring up a job I want to apply for my mom tears me up about how I wouldnt be able for it and I'd crack under any pressure. It always results in a huge argument with me crying like a baby, which just solidifies her opinions.
My confidence, mental health, sleeping patterns, eating habbits are in fucking ruins. Some days I sleep for 16 hours. I don't eat or get any exercise.
I have friends but I only meet up with them once a month or so. They all have jobs and lives or other friends who they are closer with.
I guess I just need someone to talk to, someone who can give me some help. The only voices I have around me are all criticising and berating me. I'd appreciate any comments or advice about how to navigate this situation. Thank you.

I am a high school ESL teacher. I have a freshman (14 years old) student who seems to be of about average intelligence verbally, but cannot put two sounds together even after working one-on-one with me for about 15 minutes a day since the start of the year. I use a phonics program called abcenglish, which is specifically for teen and adult English Language Learners who struggle with literacy and also Workbook for Dyslexics by Cheryl Orlassino with the Reading Specialists of Long Island. Nothing seems to work. He knows most of his letter sounds separately, but when it comes to blending them, he just can't seem to do it. He cannot read or write at all in Spanish, his native language, either. I have tried working with him just in Spanish (I speak Spanish) and it's the same thing. He literally cannot sound out 'lo' or 'si' or 'al'. Just nothing at all. I am working with his mom to sue the Department of Education for services because our school does nothing for him. I work with him as much as I can at the end of class time, but it is honestly frustrating because he is making very little progress. He cannot write anything independently except maybe the first letter of a word. But he cannot, for example, write a few sentences about himself or a sentence to answer a question. He can only copy. Is this dyslexia? I have had other dyslexic students, but they made progress using the dyslexia workbook. Their progress seemed to follow a pattern and after some practice, their reading improved noticeably, although it was still not easy for them. But with this student, it is just like no progress whatsoever. There are three other students in our school like this, nonreaders. But I never worked with them because I don't have them in my class. What could the issue be? Is there dyslexia so severe that people cannot learn to blend sounds? Is there anything to be done?

I've been learning both banjo and mandolin simultaneously. I think the banjo is the first time in playing instruments for 10 years that I can play solo and actually make people happy. In particular, there are a lot of fun and easy clawhammer songs that are good for appeasing the masses, because I guess its fun and different from what people are used to listening to.
While my technical skill on banjo and mandolin are probably growing at the same rate, I don't know many simple, complete tunes on mandolin that actually sound pretty on its own. The only one I have is this cross-picking exercise that some people like (the tune at the end):

Sure, I can play simple chord patterns but I also don't want to sound like a ukelele guy
To give an example of what I mean: Cluck Old Hen on banjo is fun and easy. Also, I haven't played classical guitar in forever but "Romanza" was a very simple fingerstyle song that people enjoy.

2024.06.01 15:11 TrashApocalypse Are people really learning to self soothe? Or are they just soothed by the fact that someone somewhere loved them at some point?
I was doing great. I was “self soothing” and doing yoga and journaling. I had a “solid” friend group of people who I thought cared about me, who told me it was ok to open up. And then suddenly, it wasn’t ok. All it took was one friend dropping me for the others to fall in line. And I realized that a huge part of my soothing pattern was reassuring myself that there were people out there who loved me. It was all over my journal. And to be clear, these people did tell me they loved me. And now, without even a conversation, I’m out.
Now I’m just back to being numb. Wondering if I should just start drinking again to help numb the pain. Doing yoga just makes me cry. I don’t want to journal anymore. I barely have the energy to try to exercise.
Is it possible to soothe yourself when you don’t have anyone who loves you? When you don’t have friends or families? Has anyone ever accomplished this?
