Recently got a VS3135 movement hulk VSF and power reserve is 2-3 hours
The watch dies every 2 to 3 hours when it’s in the case but when it’s shook in and spun about 30 times to the right time, it starts to work and it doesn’t stop until the watch is taken off. I’ve had it on for two days and it still working. I’m afraid to take it off because I don’t want it to completely die i dont think it would but dont wanna take chance rn😭😭. I took it to a jeweler today and they went to open the back of it and said they don’t work on reps. He didn’t know until he opened the back lol, but told me that I would need a cleaning some oil or there might be some grit it is hurting the power reserve. Does anyone have any advice on how to clean this or who can help clean this? I live in Michigan. I’m on the East Coast, any information would be awesome. Thank you in advance🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

2024.05.21 06:32 mxriecn Buy a cheap car with leftover money for repairs, or take on a car payment and be unable to pay for repairs?

Hi all! So I’m having a debate with my boyfriend right now and I’m getting rather frustrated. I realise I could 100% be in the wrong, but I need to know if anyone understands my view on this. So, I’m looking to sell my 2013 Buick Encore shitbox, 107k miles at the time of purchase. It was overpriced and a mistake, seeing as after taxes and such it was $10.5k. Since then, it’s been nothing but trouble and I regret buying it over the 2007 Toyota Corolla I wanted for $4k less, but my grandfather and great grandmother insisted on a newer car because “it’d have less issues”, and my grandpa pushed me heavily towards the Encore, even helping pay for it. Now, onto the debate. I personally think it’d be a better idea for me to get a car that is cheaper than what I sell my Buick for, so that I have at least $1,000 for repairs. I’m looking at a 2008 Honda Civic LX, 124k miles, $5.5k but thinking I can talk them down since it’s been for sale for over a month. I have already test driven it and can tell the brakes probably need work, but aside from that and some cosmetic things, it’s seems like a decent deal. My boyfriend on the other hand thinks I should get a newer car with 100k miles or less and take on a car payment, which would likely end up with me having little to no money for repairs. He doesn’t understand my view on it, and I don’t fully understand his. I do know I should keep looking for something that doesn’t need anything right off the bat, and I plan on it, but still. He drives a 2019 Jeep Cherokee with 36k miles, it drives good and hasn’t had any major issues, but he needs new brakes, tires (his front ones are bald on the outer part, probably needed a few rotations by now considering he’s never had a tire rotation done since owning it) and an oil change as of a few thousand miles ago, and can’t afford any of it on top of his $400/month car payment and other bills. It’s also worth mentioning I make $12/hr. Anyway, just looking for some advice and an end to this disagreement. Thanks!

2024.05.21 06:26 FakeElectionMaker I tried writing a TL where Tomás Garrido Canabal was elected President of Mexico in 1934 and turned it into a totalitarian communist dictatorship.

I tried writing a TL where Tomás Garrido Canabal was elected President of Mexico in 1934 and turned it into a totalitarian communist dictatorship.
Garrido Canabal had controlled the state of Tabasco with an iron first since 1919, carrying out a ferocious anticlerical campaign through his Red Shirts militia, and incentivizing social development in various ways.
He sought to improve the quality and variety of agriculture, and gave women the right to vote, generalized public education, and outlawed alcohol and tombstones, playing an important role in suppressing the Cristero revolt, due to his hatred of religion.
In 1934, "Maximum Chief of the Mexican Revolution" Plutarco Elias Calles, who had controlled the country through a series of puppet presidents since 1929, chose Garrido Canabal as his sucessor due to his loyalty to Calles and hope he would continue his anticlerical policies. Garrido Canabal soon met Calles at the Chapultepec Castle, and agreed to run for president, promising to carry out the Mexican Revolution's ideals "to their utmost degree".
Garrido Canabal, a Bolshevik, Marxist and Leninist (albeit not a self-proclaimed Marxist-Leninist), sought the endorsement of the Revolutionary Confederation of Independent Parties, Socialist Parties of the Left, and the Mexican Communist Party (PCM), all of whom formed the United Front of the Mexican Revolution (FURM), which ruled Mexico for decades afterwards as a socialism one-party state.
The Red Shirts violently attacked political opponents and religious believers during the election campaign, killing, torturing and humiliating thousands of people across Mexico, behaving like a fascist militia in spite of their communist views. With all political parties united behind Garrido Canabal, he was elected with 100% of the vote, and took office on 1 December 1934, with a cabinet mostly chosen by Calles.
Garrido Canabal ruled Mexico until his death in 1958, turning it into an industrial economy, albeit with a major cost to its people and civil and religious liberties. He is a controversial figure in present-day Mexico.
After taking power in 1934, Tomás Garrido Canabal transformed the Red Shirts into Mexico's secret police, perhaps modeled after the Blackshirts and SA. They were also to serve as a reserve militia during wartime.
In 1937, the United States declared war on and invaded Mexico in order to overthrow its communist regime before it could spread to the rest of Latin America, and Red Shirt divisions played a role in the Mexican resistance, which eventually led to an American withdrawal in 1940, followed by its recognition of Garrido's government in exchange for a nonaggression pact with the United States.
During the mid-1930s and early 1940s, the Red Shirts violently targeted religion across Mexico, killing priests and lay clergy, raping nuns, staging plays mocking religion, destroying religious icons and dumping them into lakes and rivers, and overseeing the implementation of Rationalist education, a model which denied the soul and human spirituality existed, and remained in effect until the fall of the Communist regime. By 1950, religious worship had all but disappeared from Mexico, and all citizens were counted as atheists for statistical purposes. Despite its ideological iconoclasm, historical monuments were left relatively undamaged by the Red Shirts; to Garrido's regime, like its predecessors, the Aztec empire was a key point of reference.
After the invasion failed, Garridist policies targeting religion and industrializing Mexico with oil funding continued unabated, and although religious persecution was toned down after WWII, there was no change to the regime's basic character. The Red Shirt secret police chief, who ruthlessly crushed any opposition to Garrido Canabal's policies, was the second most powerful man in Mexico and administered large parts of the Mexican state until Garrido Canabal purged him in 1956.
Women were barred from Red Shirt positions above the state level, as the communist regime's leadership was heavily masculine and militarist, developing a powerful military-industrial complex and, in 1960, the nuclear bomb.
After Garrido Canabal died in 1958, his sucessor, a Khrushchevite Marxist-Leninist without fascist influence, disbanded the Red Shirts and replaced them with a Mexican version of the KGB.
Calles expected Garrido Canabal to be his puppet, but the new president, a totalitarian puritan in spite of his violent atheism, eventually purged the Callistas, closed their brothels and casinos, and replaced them with loyal Garridistas.
The brothels were turned into hospitals and the casinos into schools, while the Red Shirts sentenced prostitutes into "redemption through labour" in state-owned factories and systematically executed pimps. In 1937, Garrido Canabal introduced alcohol prohibition into Mexico, four years after its repeal in the US, but revoked it in 1942 due to the same negative outcomes happening down south.
In 1936, PEMEX was founded as a state-owned company with a monopoly on the production, refinement and distribution of oil, with the property of foreign oil companies being expropriated without compensation. This led to substantial tensions between Mexico and the US, and Garrido Canabal stationed two infantry corps near the northern border to defend the country against an American invasion. He also began a military buildup, purchasing weapons from the Soviet Union, Denmark and Czechoslovakia and seeking to develop a national armaments industry.
The ferocious religious persecution previously seen in Tabasco extended to all of Mexico. The Red Shirts carried out large-scale violence against priests, lay clergy and landowners, who faced torture, murder and humiliation for their beliefs and social class. One of the President's first acts after coming to power was introducing Rationalist education to all Mexican schools, massively broadening public education, and abolishing private education. At the same time, Garrido Canabal began a cult of personality; his ideological writings were published on a large-scale, the government wrote songs and plays about him, and his portraits shaped public buildings and were carried by the Red Shirts in military parades.
In 1936, Garrido Canabal launched the first of Mexico's Five-Year Plans, taking the Soviet Union's Five-Year Plans as a model and focusing on education, healthcare, electricity, transportation and alimentation; however, during the American invasion, the plan's funding was redirected to the military. After the United States withdrawal, industrialisation continued as Mexico supplied oil to the Allies.
The main reason for the war was that the United States did not want a socialist state in their backyard, and they had supported anti-communist resistance groups before sending an ultimatum.
The invasion force marching from California was commanded by George S. Patton, and the one from Texas by Douglas MacArthur, both of whom were staunch anti-communists, and the landing in Mérida was under the command of Roy S. Geiger.
After Garrido took office, Mexico bought weapons and ammunition from the Soviet Union, Czechoslovakia, Sweden, Netherlands and Denmark, including 6 T-26 and 11 AH-IV tanks, 22 Poliparkov I-16 fighter planes, 200,000 vz.24 rifles, and 15,000 Madsen machine guns, meaning that the M1 Combat Cars deployed by the US Army were outgunned in battles fought on the desert. Minister of War Lázaro Cárdenas played an important role in beginning the mechanization of the Mexican Army, a process finished by 1960.
The furthest south in Mexico the two main invasion forces advanced was Ciudad Victoria in the state of Tamaulipas, although much of coastal Sinaloa also fell to the Americans and their UNS allies. After the war, their insurgency continued until 1953, Nazi Germany having collapsed in 1949 as the Eastern Front froze and they failed to capture the Caucasus' oil fields, carry out Operation Sea Lion, and suppress partisan activity.
The National Synarchist Union rose up against the Mexican Socialist Republic and its atheism on 18 July 1937, with 53,000 insurgents being involved in the original revolt. The Mexican General Staff refused to redirect its forces to fight the UNS, resulting in them capturing a large swath of heavily Catholic territory by 1938, although their territorial gains were rolled back beginning in October of that year, and the burden of defeating the Communists increasingly fell on the US.
As Mexico's situation improved, it increasingly obtained support from the Comintern. Artists such as Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo made works depicting the Mexican resistance, and a group of international volunteers totalling 15,000 and hailing from Brazil, Argentina, France, Italy and Germany was formed and fought relatively well. The Soviet Union tried to provide further aid, but was unable to do so due to a naval blockade of Mexican ports; nevertheless, the war led to a rivalry between the United States and the Soviet Union that resulted in America not supporting the Soviets or opening a second front after the Nazi invasion.
The Red Shirts, a Mexican paramilitary group founded by Tomás Garrido Canabal in 1931, also took part in the war, just like the Blackshirts had participated in the invasion of Ethiopia and the SS in Germany's military campaigns. The Axis Powers remained neutral in the conflict, as neither side was to their liking.
After 1938, Mexico pushed back, launching a successful counteroffensive, Operation Juarez, between May and September of that year, and dealing increasing casualties and territorial losses to the United States over the next year. The Mexican Navy, while small, increasingly attempted to break the blockade, although they were only successful starting in late 1939, when it was increasingly clear the United States had lost.
The Mexican victory made Garrido be recognized as the greatest man in the continent, and the second most well known communist in the world, behind Stalin. Mexican influence over Central America and the Caribbean increased remarkably with its defeat of the strongest economy in the world, leading to the overthrow of authoritarian regimes in El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras and their replacement by Mexican satellite states, and the consolidation of Mexico's totalitarian government.

2024.05.21 04:35 LukeL1000 Northeast Michigan is Better Than Northwest Michigan

Note: THIS POST IS JUST FOR FUN. NO HATE INTENDED (I love All of Northern Michigan)
Yep, I said it. The Northeast part of the state is better than the Northwest part. Alpena over Traverse City.
Everybody talks about the vineyards and cherry orchards on that side, which is nice, but the other side is so beautiful in it’s own way.
what makes it better?
Not Pretentious (just being honest), sunrise side, forests, got elk, rustic camping, rugged and rocky Lake Huron Shoreline with beautiful blue water (in fact some sandy spots too),
Less crowded, less developed land, more affordable, more of a getaway from it all. kinda like the UP of the Lower Peninsula
Even have the one and only true waterfall in the Lower Peninsula!
True Up North Experience, how it should be. What’s your thoughts?

2024.05.21 04:27 Glittering_Depth_449 Roommate trying to intimidate me/set me up

Backstory, I let this random stranger move in with me with no lease just a verbal agreement under the table. He has a 4 year old daughter and a junkie baby momma/healthcare worker. He is a ex drug addict, admitted to me that he was addicted to fent. Over a year ago I used to sell small amounts of weed. He asked me for cocaine verbally his first week here in my apartment. About a year ago, he allowed me to sell his baby momma a 8th of mushrooms. I got a full time job and stopped selling weed and other drugs last summer, since then I have been getting clean money working a very dirty job changing oil. I was more like a middle man than a actual drug dealer. My roommate and I are not on good terms anymore. I took him to court for a 50b restraining order because he got violent with me over some dirty dishes and messed my wrist up smacking dish soap out of my hand. I lost in court because he claimed he stood his own ground in front of his daughter. Mind you I am a black male from NC and he is a white man from Florida. He has refused to pay rent the past two months. After I lost in court, I went to the leasing office and told them that he was living in my unit for over a year. The apartment complex told me I can't move out until he is gone. They also told me that because I am a good tenant and I pay the rent that they will not evict me. They only asked that I give them a good Google review. The leasing office told me to tell him that they know he's there and lie that they are going to kick us both out. They basically told me to try and scare him to get him to leave. I gave him a 10 day notice to pay or leave and I have also given him a 7 day notice from the day rent is due that his lease/verbal agreement through me is being terminated. He has been on a month-to-month lease through myself.
I don't want to sue him, I am simply trying to get him to leave before the eviction process starts. Legally, he has claimed residency at my home. He keeps telling me that I'm about to get locked up. He claims I stole money from him. We have been splitting the electric bill. During the months of December, January, and February he did not pay rent. He paid me back $1500 during march when we got our tax returns. During the months of DecembeJanuary our electric bill was $133 for the two months. He was short on rent and he sent me $150. I used that $150 to pay off our $133 electric bill for Dec 13th - Jan 12th. He's claiming that I stole the $150 even though I have record that I paid the bill. I let the electric bill stack up over two months because he already owed me rent for the month of December and January. I got record of the money he sent to me because he sends me money through the Zelle app. I spoke with law enforcement today if that's actually considered stealing and they said no.
Lastly, I was doing dishes one morning while his 4 year old daughter was outside in the common area, my roommate is a artist and he makes raps and produces beats. He lets her watch tv in the common area unsupervised. His daughter started undressing herself in the common area while I was doing my dishes and I didn't even notice until I finished my dishes. Now he's calling me a pedo even though I never even touched his daughter.
I don't have any narcotics or drugs in my apartment. I'm filing for his eviction in a week. Can he really set me up with the PDF allegations even though he has no proof? Or the 8th of shrooms that was sold to his baby moms with his consent over a year ago? Or with the allegations that I "stole" the money he sent me through Zelle when he was behind on rent

2024.05.21 03:44 NightmaresKnownAFew Landlord volunteered a release from lease via text but refuses to respond via email nor provide other legally viable document.

(MI) Landlord offered via text to release me from lease but refusing a legally-enforceable agreement and no terms
Summary: One year lease. I was never able to inhabit the rental. It’s been under 60 days as of tomorrow since I was given keys. My landlord has been refusing to communicate through an email nor any legally enforceable means to release me from my lease, which they volunteered through text, no terms mentioned. What are my options? The extra time was spent homeless while they attempted and failed to correct a mold issue. They were airing out the place and had a strong glade plug in whenever I saw the place before signing. I have chronic sinusitis and mold allergies documented.
I consulted with a free (low income and two partial disabilities and Michigan medically frail) government-funded attorney help line that says I need an actual release. I wrote what the helpline recommended as terms of the release in an email, but they refuse to respond to it nor even agree via text beyond “seems agreeable” via text. I asked for release from paying for the remainder of the lease, release from future liability resulting from the lease and no future claims against me. I also asked for my security deposit with last month rent, as they were termed together as the deposit. Again “seems agreeable” through a text.
Their attempt with the mold was to hire friends to replace most carpet and tile (inexpensive in a 15x18’ total house). They left all removed material against the side of the house and is still there. The mold can easily be seen. I still couldn’t handle 20 minutes in the space, I reacted severely to the mold and the odor is still rank. Nobody would inspect after 40+ calls to provide a report. I’m a biologist and do have photos of the mold even under a microscope and have samples. The county, township and city do not require RENTALS to be INHABITABLE. I was told this by government officials.

The city of Clare and community was thrown into a stage of excitement last Saturday night when it became known that Isaiah Leebove, 42, chairman of the Board of Directors of the Mammoth Producing and Refining Corporation of this city, had been shot and killed and Attorney Byron Geller had suffered two bullet wounds in the left thigh at the hands of Jack Livingston, 45, also an oil promoter, who has made his home occasionally at the hotel for the past eight years.
The shooting affray took place in the grill room of Hotel Doherty at 10:15 o’clock. Mr. and Mrs. Geller had taken a seat opposite each other at a table in a booth at the west side of the room. A few minutes later Mr. Leebove and his nephew, Sam Braunstein, entered and shared the booth with them. At this time Mr. Livingston who was sitting at a table with a Mr. and Mrs. Marr near the center of the room, excused himself and left. A short time later he returned and resumed his seat. In the course of a few minutes he again left his chair and stepping quickly to the booth occupied by the four people fired three shots in succession at Leebove.
One of the bullets passed through Leebove’s left arm into his chest, piercing a rib, into his heart and completely through the body. Another passed through his left forearm and through the fleshy portion between the thumb and forefinger of his right hand. It is thought that it was this bullet that entered Mr. Geller’s thigh, glazing the pelvis bone. The third bullet is thought to have inflicted the flesh wound in the upper part of Mr. Geller’s leg.
With the words “Jack! Jack!—why”, Mr. Leebove fell from his seat to the floor and died instantly. At this point Mr. Braunstein jumped to his feet and grabbed Livingston's arms and held them up so as to prevent more damage at the same time forcing him toward the door of the lobby. Here Livingston turned the butt of the gun away from him and handed same to Harry Wehrly, assistant manager of the hotel.
During this time Mr. Geller had dropped to the floor and crawled on his hands and knees to the south side of the room and several minutes elapsed before it was discovered he had been injured. After his wounds had been examined, he was rushed to the Clare County General Hospital where late reports are to the effect that he is recovering nicely.
After being taken to his room by bellhop Stanley Parish, Livingston's first request was that he send his father a telegram and it was during the wording of this that Chief of Police William Dunlop came in and made the arrest, which Livingston talked calmly and without regret as to his act. When informed that he had also wounded Mr. Geller he stated that he was sorry, that he considered Mr. Geller his friend and would not harm him for the world.
Accompanied by Mayor Dunlop, the Chief of Police ushered Livingston to the rear of the hotel where Sheriff George Bates, his deputy Robert Caster and state police took charge of the prisoner and rushed him to the county jail at Harrison.
Coroner A. N. Friz removed the body of Mr. Leebove to his undertaking rooms and impaneled a jury consisting of Wallace Johnson, John Kesckman, Paul Koch, Leo Brown, Frank Irwin and Alex McKinnon for an inquest that was held in the auditorium of the city hall Monday forenoon. Eight witnesses were summoned, but only two were heard, Mrs. Byron Geller and Dr. B. J. Sanford, who with Dr. F. G. Slattery performed the autopsy Sunday forenoon. After being out nearly three-quarters of an hour, the jury returned with a verdict of “Isaiah Leebove died as the result of a gunshot wound which pierced the heart.”
Mr. Leebove's body laid in state in the Doherty Funeral Home for a brief period Sunday evening and was then taken by funeral car to Pittsburg for the funeral services and interment on Tuesday. Samuel Garfield and C. W. Clark attended the rites and acted as pallbearers.
Mrs. Leebove, wife of the slain man, was driven to Mt. Pleasant Monday morning, where she boarded the private planed of Walter L. McClanahan for the flight to Pittsburgh, Pa.
Acquaintances of Leebove and Livingston state that trouble has been brewing between the two men since they severed business connections several years ago. Livingston has maintained a room at the hotel buying and selling oil leases. He was a jolly nature and delighted in practical jokes. Both men have many friends in Clare and throughout central Michigan.
Attorney Byron Geller, former reporter for a Detroit newspaper, and twice assistant attorney general, came to Clare about April 1st and entered private practice in the offices vacated by Attorney Theo. G. Bowler. About three weeks ago he was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth Geller, of this city, who is almost constantly at his bedside. During his short stay here he has made many friends who join in wishing him a speedy recovery.
Samuel A. Braunstein was born in Pittsburgh, Penn., where he attended school. He was graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in 1928, and was connected with a prominent Pittsburgh investment company until 1934, when he came to Clare as office manager for the Mammoth Petroleum Corporation. He is at the present time Vice President of the Mammoth Producing and Refining Corporation. During his residence here he has won many friends and is admired for his efficient business methods.
---
Isaiah Leebove was born in Pittsburgh, November 27, 1894, where he received his primary and high school education. He was graduated from the law school of Cumberland University, Lebanon, Tenn., and was admitted to the bar by the Texas Supreme Court, July 3, 1916.
Mr. Leebove practiced law in Texas and Oklahoma until November 20, 1921, when he moved to New York City. He was admitted to the New York bar June 7, 1922, and among the numerous endorsements was one from Associate Justice William Pierson of the Supreme Court of Texas. He was also endorsed by Louis H. Solomon, a prominent New York attorney, who had retained Mr. Leebove as counsel while investigating oil properties in Oklahoma.
The high class recommendations given Mr. Leebove by prominent attorneys who had known him intimately, have him entry into the leading circles of his profession, and he entered into partnership with a prominent law firm having offices on Fifth Avenue. He never severed his connections with this firm and has often been called to the city for purposes of consultation and advice.
Mr. Leebove's contact with the oil industry in the west gave him an intimate insight into that business and he came to Michigan during the early days of the oil development in this section. He interested himself in some of the drilling projects in the wildcat territory to the north of Clare and also in the proven field in Vernon, located four miles to the south of the city.
Several years ago Mr. Leebove purchased the home of Walter Pettit, known as “Wildwood,” and he has added to the bungalow until it has become one of the finest of modern residences in this section of the state. Improvements were under way on this property at the time of his death. The original ten acres that he purchased has been landscaped and improved and is a show place of this section.
He purchased addition acreage and there is a game preserve on the property that is well stocked with all kinds of native wildlife.
Mr. Leebove has been very successful in his business and the Mammoth Producing and Refining Corporation, which he organized and of which he has always been the directing head, is the largest independent producer east of the Mississippi River. The company occupies for its offices the entire second floor of the Citizens State Bank building.
Last December, Mr. Leebove purchased the Clare County Savings Bank building and up until the time of his death had not revealed his plans in this investment.
Mr. Leebove had always been affiliated with the Democratic Party but his public activities in politics were limited to the campaigns of former Governor William A. Comstock, whom he regarded as one of his best and nearest friends. He often expressed himself to his friends as being entirely uninterested in any office or political position.
Mr. Leebove was quiet and unassuming in his appearance and manner and made few close associates. He kept his own counsel and was loath to giving out information of his business affairs.
He was interested in the welfare of the community in which he made his home and contributed generously to all civic programs and undertakings.
Mr. Leebove gave much to charity but never advertised the fact and would not permit any publicity of his gifts. Last Christmas, Mr. and Mrs. Leebove gave hundreds of dollars in clothing and food to needy families and children of this community.
In the death of Isaiah Leebove, this city has lost one of its most loyal supporters. The esteem and respect in which he was held in this city was shown about two years ago when some interests in the state assailed his reputation and a special meeting of the City Council was held and a resolution expressing confidence in his honesty and public-spiritedness was unanimously adopted by that body.
The body laid in state in the Doherty Funeral Home for a brief period Sunday evening and was then taken by funeral car to Pittsburgh for the funeral services and interment.

Looks kinda like one but he's webbed up his lil temp tube home. I will be trying to give him a more proper home here in the next day or two, but he's ok in here at the moment. Or should I let him go?
He has yellow markings on his back and head but is mostly black otherwise. So cute!!

2024.05.21 02:24 suburbanhippie_6 Anxiety surrounding what’s to come after baby

Expecting our first in July, lease ends in October and we are deciding to move.
TDLR: Expecting couple wanting to move and start fresh with a 3month old to be closer to family but isn't sure where would be better for us. Family situation is sort of complicated.
If you are familiar with the south and Ohio geographically and culturally, I would love to hear your input.
28F and 29M married couple currently living 12-16 hours from parents. Our first is due July 4th. We have our very good friends (couple with 2 kids) that are basically family that live in our town close by. We are expecting our first in July and our lease is up in October. Living where we currently are is starting to become a bit stale - rent is unaffordable for what we need (a yard and more space) and buying a house is only affordable in school districts that are much less than favorable. Wages are okay. Combined income is about 80k but with student loans, car loans, and we take care of all bills. The biggest perk of staying is the fact that we live on the coast and have wonderful friends that we love as family here.
My dad lives in Northern Kentucky (Cincinnati) and in-laws live in Northern Ohio (Michigan/Ohio) border. We met when I lived in Northern Ohio for grad school. My mom passed 3 years ago after an aggressive 5 month battle with cancer and my dad is 72 yo working full time still after a few stents in his heart and a triple bypass at 70 yo. My mom was 53 so we never expected her to pass before my dad. She was also the glue that held our family together and it has since crumbled unfortunately.
First grandchild on my side, 4th on my husband's side. We live the farthest away out of everyone. My husband is expecting a promotion that will move us to Knoxville, TN which is ~3.5 hours away from my dad and 7 hours from his parents. We won't know anyone and will essentially be starting all over with a 3mo old. He doesn't love his job, but is hoping the pay raise will help us secure housing and help with starting a family. Currently we make a combined income of about 80k. He's open to finding something else if he isn't happy with the negotiations from this promotion. His company recently was bought by a corporate company and doesn't love the changes being made. His family is extremely supportive and my dad is as well. I'm very close to my dad and get along with his family very well. Same goes for him.
Logistically and financially, Ohio is much more affordable and presents more job opportunities for me (Athletic Trainer). Husband would want to live in Cleveland where he has best friends although the thought of going that far up north again worries me with the weather and seasonal affective disorder. We both rely on being outdoors and engaging in outdoor recreation for our mental health. He doesn't mind the cold as much but does like having more mild weather for more time outdoors. He doesn't love the idea of going back to Ohio but can see benefits. He would need to find an entirely new job as would I. We both love camping and hiking in the mountains and really want to be close to all of that and raise our kids with an active lifestyle. Southern culture and values are also something we would love to raise our kids around.
For me, NKY/Cincinnati is out of the question as going back home would send me into a spiraling depression just being back where I worked very hard to get away from (multiple reasons). Every time I visit home I find myself grieving the loss of my mom, the loss of my family as I knew it and my anxiety worsens exponentially. Let's just say where I grew up carries a lot of weight and I'm fairly certain I have a degree of PTSD from being there. But it is also fairly cheap for housing and some connections for jobs. My husband has said he wouldn't let us move back there as he's seen how much of a toll it has on me. It's just unfortunately not an option.
I worry about losing time with my dad as he is the oldest of our parents with pre-existing comorbidities. With my mom's cancer diagnosis being so unexpected I fear losing him unexpectedly as well. I want our children to be involved in his life but also my in-laws in Ohio.
What would you do in this situation? We have both made sacrifices in the past of where we are living in order to take care of business with family and work. We partially feel like it's our obligation to create the life we want for us and our kids. Partially feel like it's going to be so much harder without family nearby and much more uncertainty.

2024.05.21 02:05 Reeder13 Dual Fuel System for Manufactured Home

So I have spent a few days researching and haven't found a ton of info for my situation. I recently purchased a 1995 manufactured home that is 1350 sqft that currently has an LP furnace in Northern Michigan. There is no A/C so we have been considering options for cooling the home but also thought it would be a good time to update the whole system as it seems to be undersized for the space. We have a wood burning stove that will do most of the heating in the winter, but thought a dual fuel system would be a good option to have multiple redundancies for extreme cold. My question is around the duct work. From my research it seems like manufactured homes tend to have undersized ducting leading to high static. I have found a few setups that seem like they would work down flow with our current duct work but haven't found anything about working with high static. Are my only options to replace the duct work or go with a more common mini split setup and have the air handlers on the wall? I would love to not have a big air handler hanging off the wall in multiple rooms, but I know doing the duct work for the whole house would be a big job. Thanks in advance for your advice.

2024.05.21 02:03 Long_Blueberry_4711 AITAH for lying to my family to skip my sister’s baby shower?

Back in November I (22F) moved to a house owned by my ex step mom, my sisters’ mom. We’ll call them Jessica (18F) and Sandy (20F). We agreed on a rent price and signed a leasing agreement for 1 year. In order for us to move in, we had to get the basement rental ready. We put in new window trim, got all the old, gross carpet out, hung up hanging live wires, built a closet, and cleaned it from top to bottom. Sandy also lived in the house with her twins (2M&F), fiancé (22M), and best friend (20F). Back in February, Sandy decided to have her friends from her school come over for a small get together. When she told me, it was the day before they were coming. I had gone to work all day then I made dinner for the people that lived in the house plus Jessica and did the dishes after.
Afterwords I had went to go to sleep when Jessica messaged me and told me that she couldn’t believe that I didn’t clean up the dinner that I made for everyone. For reference, my sister’s fiancé and my partner were not home from work yet and hadn’t eaten. She messaged me and said that I rarely ever helped around the house (which our space was in the basement, I cleaned the bathroom twice a month and did the dishes about once a week, it shouldn’t be my job to clean the whole main floor when I’m only up there to cook and shower. And, she didn’t even live in the house), and that I shouldn’t have a problem staying up late to help get the house around for Sandy’s friends. I had to be up by 5am and out the door by 5:30 the next morning for work and at this point it was already almost 10PM. We ended up having a heated discussion where she called me a bitch, lazy, told me I ruined her mom’s house, and couldn’t believe that I didn’t help more. I ended up just throwing the rest of dinner away and went to sleep crying.
A couple weeks later, I was sick of having this tension between us so I decided not to bring it up and I acted like nothing happened. She never apologized and she never tried to reach out to me after that situation. I summed it up to the fact that she had diagnosed anger problems, OCD, and couldn’t take her medication because she was also pregnant.
Fast forward to March 20th and everyone in the house got a message from Sandy and Jessica’s mom, the owner of the house. She explained that she and her husband had decided that they were going to sell the house because it was too much to be a landlord for the house and keep up on the necessary repairs. Our leases were to be voided upon the selling of the house (yes, this clause was in our lease agreement). My partner and I decided that instead of being blind sighted when the house sold that we were going to move out by the end of the month into his grandparents’ house, who had agreed to let us stay there for a couple months until we could put a down payment on a house. I sent the owner a copy of our intent to vacate and she accepted it.
The following week she had sent us the propane bill, and demanded that my partner and I pay our portion by the end of the month (just a couple days away). The bill was not due until the middle of April, but she said that we had to pay before we vacated the unit. She then accused us of not paying a single propane bill in the 4.5 months that we had lived there, which was entirely false and we had the receipts to prove it. At the end of the day, I sent her the money for the propane bill out of our savings because she kept being insistent.
That same day, I got a message from Jessica saying that she couldn’t believe how disrespectful I was to her mom and her mom’s property. She said she couldn’t wait until we moved out. I replied back to her and told her that I had every right to defend myself and show her the evidence when she accused us of not paying. I re-iterated that we were the only reason that the basement was even habitable, and that it wasn’t fair of her to blame all of the mess and destruction of the house on us.
Again, she never reached out, never apologized. Until she sent me a picture of an invite to her baby shower with a copy and pasted message that I assumed she was sending to everyone. I messaged her back and just said that I’d be there. I never got a reply. When the day of her shower came, I decided to tell Sandy and my dad that my car had an oil leak that I had to deal with and I wasn’t going to be able to make it to the shower. I just don’t feel like I should have to be the bigger person when this hasn’t been the first time something like this happened. I was the one that reached out the last time and decided to just push my issues to the side for her. I don’t think that it is fair to me to keep pushing my feelings to the side and giving her the impression that she can do and say whatever she wants to me and I’ll just forgive and forget.
Neither one of us have reached out to one another and have only seen each other briefly at my niece and nephew’s birthday party.
So, AITAH for lying to my family to skip my sister’s baby shower?

2024.05.20 23:35 IndependentOrnery296 10 Days In Italy (Rome > Florence > Cinque Terre) - Post-trip thoughts!

Husband and I (outdoorsy 30-somethings) just got back from the most magical 10 days of blitzing through Italy and I wanted to report back on how it all went! Itinerary report followed by general takeaways below. (:
May 5 (Rome) - Landed at Rome airport around 9AM, bought tickets for the Leonardo Express / validated in station and then hopped on a train around 10ish, got to Termini for around 11AM if I remember correctly. Wandered from Termini to our airbnb in Trastavere with our backpacks on, walked through/past a lot of the sites we'd be seeing later on. Part of the walk took us down the steps so we were walking along the bank of the Tiber and wowowowowow. We were more wiped out than expected after the walk and ended up napping at our airbnb after we checked in (lol) and then put ourselves back together, did Rick Steves' audio tour of Trastavere, found a place to get dinner, and just kind of wandered around the neighborhood stopping to sip wine and eat tiramisu in different spots. It was incredible.
May 6 (Rome) - Used IT.TAXI to call a car to bring us to the drop off point for our guided tour of the Vatican. I don't regret booking this because The Vatican is, ultimately, fucking insane in its offerings of art and history and whatnot, but this was easily the busiest/most crowded/suffocating thing we did the whole trip. There were so many people our tour ended up getting diverted from the Sistine chapel 2 or 3 times, which I actually liked because it meant we got to see EVERYTHING there was to see. I think we walked ~4 miles by the end of the tour. Tour started at 9:30 and we were walking out of St. Peter's at 13:00. Walked back to our bnb, passed out until 15:00, and then walked back into the heart of the city for our 17:45 Colosseum entry slot. Took our time getting there and let ourselves get distracted by any steps we wanted to run up or things we wanted to get closer to, etc. Waited behind maybe 5 people before getting our tickets checked for the colosseum, did Rick Steve's audio tour once inside, amazing. Originally we were planning on doing the forum afterwards but did not realize the forum closes early! Ended up spontaneously catching a bus to Appian Way and wandered around some of the park for sunset - not the part of the park we meant to wander around, but it was pretty nonetheless. Tried to catch a bus back but it never came, so we called another car via it.taxi back to our neighborhood. Grabbed dinner and gelato.
May 7 (Rome) - Hopped on a local bus to San Paolo train station, took a train out to Ostia Antica. Did the Rick Steve's audio tour (this is a running theme) and wandered the ruins for a couple of hours. The red poppies popping out of everything could make me cry, honestly. We were basically the only people there all morning. When we left around 11:00 there were hoards of schooltrips showing up, but we had the whole place to ourselves. Crazy. Hopped back on the train and took it to San Paolo, where we dipped into the metro and took a different train to the Colosseum area. Grabbed some street food and wandered - at midday this area is WAY more packed than in the late afternoon, like how it was the day before when we were there. The main line to the forum was stupid long, but there was no line at the Palatine Hill entrance just a little bit away from the Arch. We entered through there and wandered, did the Rick Steve's audio tour, wandered some more. Caught a bus to Campo d'fiori, and did most of Rick Steve's heart of rome walk. When we got to the pantheon we got in line to buy tickets - one of the machines was accepting money but was out of printer paper - we were able to snag one of the last printed tickets from the other machine around 17:00 and get inside the Pantheon. We ended up being two of like 10 people inside, this was a definite highlight. Did Rick Steve's pantheon audio tour and marveled at everything. Got kicked out around 17:45, continued the Heart of Rome walk and ended it ourselves at the Trevi Fountain. It was slammed but not hard to get close to the fountain itself. Walked back to Trastavere and watched sunset from one of the bridges over the Tiber. Wandered into a restaurant named something ending in "il massi" in trastevere - inadvertently one of the best meals of the whole trip. Hung out in Piazza Trilussa while a street performer played Bob Marley to a very happy crowd, went home, passed out.
May 8 (Rome -> Florence) - Grabbed coffee and pastries and ate them in Piazza Trilussa after checking out of our bnb. Trekked up Janiculum hill (with our bags) and hung out there for about an hour taking in the incredible view before walking down the other side (towards the Vatican?) and catching a bus to Termini, where we hopped on a pre-booked bullet train from Rome to Florence. Walked from the train station to our place in Oltrarno, close to Pitti and Ponte Vecchio - felt a kind of like, culture shock, I guess? Rome and Florence are so, so different. We stayed in a really cool airbnb on the top floor of what used to be a tower, I think? There was a plaque out front. A lot of stairs to go up but definitely worth it. Dropped our stuff off, grabbed some gelato, made it over for our 17:15 tour time of Accademia to see David. The line situation was NUTS but there was a method to the madness. The poster scammers were EVERYWHERE. Once we got inside it was very cool - David does not disappoint - we did the Rick Steves audio tour and wandered. Once that was over we made our way back towards Oltrarno and realized we were close to Gustapizza and like ~15 minutes out from it opening. I'm not about to wait in line for hours for food, but I can wait 30 minutes. Got in the to-go line, ordered two pizzas right after they opened (husband went out and bough a bottle of wine in the meantime), and we ate the pizzas and drank the wine in the nearby piazza. This was one of my favorite meals. I fucking love a piazza.
May 9 (Florence) - Slept in a bit! Did Rick Steve's Florence walk. Were originally going to do the duomo climb but changed our minds at the last minute - the amount of people waiting made it seem like it was going to be really claustrophobic - I don't regret this at all. Ended getting tickets to the Orsanmichele church / museum kind of on a whime (it was suggested in the Rick Steve's audio), I think 8 euros a pop. The church was beautiful, but the museum must be a state secret. We were the only 2 people in there, and the second floor is all HUGE windows with unobstructed views of the whole florence skyline, from within the skyline. It was dead quiet inside. No crowds. And incredible views. We soaked it up in here for a while, and then after the tour was done (around Palazza Vecchio), we wandered into San Frediano (I heard it was a cool area), got some of the best sandwiches from some random place, had Salciccia for the first time and didn't realize until we were like halfway through eating it (so good, omg), and hung out at a bar near a park for a while before catching a bus (I think 12) up to San Minianto. I read in a thread that this was a better viewpoint than the Piazzale Michelangelo with less crowds, and holy smokes. The view was insane. The monks closed the grounds right before sunset, but we were able to post up in one of the nooks in the wall right outside of the grounds and watch the sun go down. No crowd at all. Magical. Hiked back down on foot through Piazzale Michelangelo and stopped for a second to grab a beer and snap a photo, but it was SO so soooooooo crowded. Kept walking and wandered around Palazzo Vecchio area, grabbed dinner somewhere and headed home.
May 10 (Panzano) - Got our rental car and made our way to Panzano for a lunch reservation at Dario's. I was worried this was going to be hokey or full of old people or something, but this ended up being a huge highlight. We were sat at a table with a bunch of guys weekending together from Milan, a couple from Brazil, and some other folks from Northern Italy, and we all just chatted and ate together and drank way too much chianti and stayed until we basically were asked to leave. It was amazing. What was supposed to be a two hour lunch turned into a six hour hang out. The food was incredible, obviously, but making friends with such an assortment of strangers was really, really special. Wandered around Panzano a little bit after we all parted ways and then made our way to the carpark in Florence. We had reserved a spot at a place a week or so in advance and paid once we got there in person, it was great. Grabbed some more of the best sandwiches I've ever had in my life from some hole in the wall place in Oltrarno and hung out at our airbnb drinking wine until bedtime.
May 11 (Montepulciano) - Slept in a bit! Grabbed a capuccino at the local spot we'd found near our place, got our rental car, and set off for a day spent wandering around in Montepulciano. Didn't really have a set in stone plan for the day, but we parked for free near a bus station and then caught a cheap shuttle up to the top of the town. Hopped off at the top (the driver could tell we had no idea where "the top" was going to be and kindly flagged us when we were supposed to get off), and really spent the whole day just wandering up and down the town. The wine was all very good, everywhere. The food also. And catching the sunset from the top was probably one of the most incredible sunsets I've seen anywhere ever. Highly recommend. Drove back after dark and the highway was CLOSED so we spent most of the drive on a very, very small road carrying diverted highway traffic in both directions. It was a little scary because of the buses and trucks, but we lived. Dropped our car off at the return lot, caught a tram back to termini, and walked back to our place. Got in around 23:00. LONG, beautiful day.
May 12 (Florence -> Cinque Terre) - Got coffees at some third wave coffee shop instead of the usual spot because the usual spot was slammed and we had our bags with us - this place was fine but definitely geared towards Americans. And then walked to Termini and caught a train to Pisa, hopped out and switched platforms, and then caught a train to Monterosso Al Mare, landed around 15:00. Met up with our airbnb host, who was SO KIND, and walked up the 150 steps to the room we'd be staying in (not in the old side of town), it was amazing. Rooftop access. And tucked into the forested hill behind the other buildings. It was directly over the train but, surprisingly, that didn't bother us at all. We dropped our stuff off and wandered back out, got some foccaccia (holy shit) and walked into the old town. We wandered deep into the old town and up some road surrounded by vineyards and found some open but OLD woodsy staircase path that brought us up.... we did not know where we were going but did not care. Ended up popping out in the back of the cemetery at the top of the hill. Nobody was there, but if you walk ~50 meters or so away from the cemetery and down the road, there's an incredible panoramic viewpoint of the whole area. Wandered around here, then down an old-looking path around the cemetery that brought us to the front of the place, which is where the crowds (really not a lot of people) of people were. Wandered back down into the old town, bought some picnic-stuff from a local market (focaccia, pesto, olives, cheese, beer, limoncello) and then made our way home and picnicked on the rooftop while the sunset. Incredible day.
May 13 (Cinque Terre) - I think this was my favorite day. I don't know. I'm a sucker for large bodies of water and generally just being in nature. We got down for breakfast around 10AM, and droves of people were getting off of the train to start the hike that everyone does. Currently only the Monterosso -> Vernazza -> Corniglia sections are open. We were planning on doing the hike first thing, but really, really didn't want to deal with the crowds of it all. So we bought our trail pass ticket and then decided to change our plans around. We ended up catching the ferry from Monterosso Al Mare and taking it down to Riomaggiore, 45 minute trip total (15 euros a head and you get to see every town from the water... so worth it), where we ran around a little bit and split a cone of fried anchovies from Tutti Frutti (10/10). Hopped on the train and took it to Corniglia, wandered around here a bit and then hopped on the hiking trail and hiked Corniglia -> Vernazza. Definitely recommend. The views were stunning, and we only saw a couple of people in either direction since we started a bit later in the day / I assume a bunch of people only do the first chunk of the hike when starting in Monterosso. The portion we did took us about 65 minutes, and we stopped to re-apply sunscreen and gawk at the views a couple of times. Did a quick lap in Vernazza but were itchy to get to the beach at this point, so hopped on the train to Monterosso, used our trail passes to get free access to the train bathrooms and change into our swimsuits (we brought a small, roll-up-able hiking sling bag for this purpose), bought a towel for 10 euros from one of the stalls near the beach and hit the free section of the beach in Fegina. Some folks but nothing crazy. Laid our stuff down and spent the afternoon swimming in the sea. The locals said the water was cold but it was beautiful - 69 degrees Fahrenheit or so - much warmer than the ocean water we're used to in California lol. After hanging out here until around 18:00 or so, we made our way back up to our room (150 steps!!!!!), showered, put ourselves together, and made it back out for dinner around 21:00. We were able to get a table at a restaurant in the old part of town and if I recommend any place, it's this one: Tosca Bistrot. The chef was out and about helping the waitstaff, she stopped and chatted with us for a bit, and the food was the best food we had the whole trip. Anchovies in lemon and oil, trufie with pesto, poached sea bass, tiramisu and a pinoleta, which is a tart I've never heard of or had but now cannot stop thinking about. It was amazing and special and sweet. Walked out of here and sat on the beach in the dark for a little bit near some street performers before making our way home.
May 14 (Cinque Terre -> Milan) - I'm counting this as our last day even though technically we flew out of Milan on May 15. Initially we were going to spend two nights in Monterosso Al Mare but it felt dicey having to take a three hour train ride to a city where you then would have to catch a flight, so we opted to head to Milan to spend our last night before flying to limit any chance of craziness. We checked out of our bnb in the morning, spent a few hours wandering around with our bags, got some focaccia and ate it on the beach in the shade of the sidewalk overhand, and stopped at a local market to buy some fresh fruit for the train ride. This turned out to be a mistake. We bought two peaches, a nectarine, and some lemony cookies. Husband and I split the peaches and nectarine on the train ride, and just as we get to our hotel in Milan he starts complaining of nausea / upset stomach. He ended up having wild food poisoning. We washed the fruit before eating it but I guess something similar happened to him years ago when he was in Romania - something about his guts just not being familiar with the bacteria on the skin of the fruit or something. I was totally fine, but I historically have really strong guts. It ended up pouring rain the entire afternoon we were in Milan, anyway, so while it wasn't the most ideal way to end the trip it was also not the worst. Our hotel room was small enough that it was the perfect place for him to need to be close to a toilet, and we just opened the windows and listened to the rain and the locals being raucous into the night. Thankfully he was through it by morning and was able to get some sleep! But that was basically that!!!
BIGGEST TAKEAWAYS - I have to assume this applies to anywhere, but our favorite moments / things really ended up being the little everyday things as opposed to the big tourist attractions. Like the local cafes we ended up going to every morning, hanging out in piazzas with the birds, chatting with people, and letting ourselves wander down any weird little path that caught our attention. And the gelato. - We tried our best to not over-schedule things and really only book the attractions we wanted to see instead of what we felt we HAD to see. We're not huge art people so we felt the Uffizzi and such would have been lost on us, were more interested in eating and hanging out with people so we prioritized that, etc. - Public transit is so wildly easy to use here that you should absolutely lean into relying on it. The bus schedules were pretty easy to read wherever they were posted, google maps' routes were usually spot-on, and if the bus doesn't show up (in Rome this seems to happen sometimes) and you don't want to walk, it.taxi worked just like uber. - If you can book the BIG ATTRACTIONS towards the end of the day, do it. Crowds are thinner and you have a better chance of smaller numbers being inside. We booked Colosseum/Forum/Palatine Hill pass + Vatican (with a tour) + Accademia + time slot to Ostia Antica in advance and let ourselves sort of figure out the rest of the day-to-day as best we could. - Aside from lodgings and the car rental, the only other thing we booked in advance was the bullet train. It was pretty packed so I recommend you do the same, plus I think it's cheaper if you book it in advance. - Idk if Rick Steves gets a bad rap or whatever but as two people who didn't WANT to book tours to everything and also could not afford to book tours to everything, the guided Rick Steves walks were amazing. They give you so much context to wherever you are and there were absolutely some things we saw - a completely empty church with a beautiful rose garden and singing nuns comes to mind - that we never would have stumbled upon without them. Definitely recommend. Husband and I literally just split a pair of airpods, made sure to download the audio tours when we were on wifi, and listened and walked. In this vein, definitely bring a good portable charger.
I can honestly say this was a magical, life altering trip for me. I have never taken two weeks to just go have fun somewhere like I did with this, and it was amazing. Ultimately I think the most important thing is not letting yourself be too tied to a schedule, giving yourself some leeway/grace, figuring out specifically what's important for YOU to see, and just leaning in to living in wherever you are. It was amazing. I wish we had more time and I can't wait to go back.
If you want any specific recs (food, gelato, lodging, etc) in any of the places we were, feel free to message me!!

2024.05.20 23:09 Ok-Teacher-6088 Renting my parents old family home that will eventually be 1/3 mine

Northern Ireland
My mother currently owns and pays a mortgage on her old family home that she said she is hoping to pass onto me and my two sisters in the future.
As there is still a mortgage on the property, my mum has recently decided to renovate and rent it out.
My bf and I are looking to rent for a while as we both live at home but want to be closer to work. My mum offered the idea of staying in the property instead of paying higher rent elsewhere (and in houses that didn’t meet our criteria re location, number of rooms etc).
Obviously we would write up a lease etc and we would be paying rent as tenants, and not contributing to the mortgage directly ie giving us a beneficial interest in the property in the future.
However, my mum actually raised the point that regardless of whether we set up a lease, the money we would be paying would be paying off the mortgage, so either way we would be putting our own money into the house. She wondered how that would play out when the time came to split the house between my sisters and I.
I said, as we are renting, our money should be treated as rent and whether that is used to pay the mortgage or not, it is not our concern, as it wouldn’t be in any other tenancy.
But my mum is querying whether there is a fair way to split between us three but also that my bf and I are ending up with the short straw?
Would anyone have any opinions on this?
I think best situation is just agree to a lease and pay rent as normal, but then my mum sees it as contributing to the mortgage payments and so thinks this will create difficulties in the future.

2024.05.20 22:04 Relevant_Shame Eviction process for ex-spouse (Michigan)

My friend recently got divorced and the house is one that she is renting to own and on the lease for. The ex husband was never on the lease and his stuff is in the house, but he isn't sleeping there if that matters at all and he hasn't paid anything toward bills. She wants to get him and his stuff out permanently. What is the process for evicting him if he refuses to leave?
I read that a notice to quit is usually required in Michigan before the eviction is brought to court, is that right? And does the notice need to be notarized or anything when it's given to the ex-husband?

2024.05.20 21:30 MichaelLanne Interview of Vietnamese Maoists

START OF THE INTERVIEW
Thiago: We want to welcome you and acknowledge your participation in this interview.
Luu: Thank you for inviting us to this interview. We are honored to participate and answer your questions, comrades.
Thiago: When was the Serving the People (Vietnam) blog created and what are its objectives?
Luu: The blog was created in December last year. With 4 main objectives, to digitize and archive texts from China, in particular texts of Chairman Mao, the Gang of Four and the Cultural Revolution, in addition to other Marxist texts such as documents from the Great Debate, Stalin, Kalinin and other works from countries like Brazil and the Philippines, in Vietnamese, so everyone can access them for free. We also want to push for the reconstitution of the Communist Party of Vietnam as a Marxist-Leninist-Maoist party and encourage the masses to practice and organize, in the north and south of the country.
Thiago: Which groups represented the left line of the Vietnamese Communist Party from 1956 until the total restoration of capitalism?
Thang: There was a rise of the right-wing opportunist line, by the group called "Nhan van-Giai Pham", which attempted to restore capitalist culture through what is called "literature for literature's sake". President Ho Chi Minh was the main defender of Marxism in this struggle.
In the Great Debate between Leninism and revisionism, Ho Chi Minh occupies the middle line. But this line was a serious mistake, because it created fertile ground for the rise of revisionism and opportunism and for the restoration of capitalism in Vietnam later.
Overall, in the history of the Communist Party, the left line was defended mainly by Ho Chi Minh, but he also indirectly liquidated this line by moving to centrism, creating a vacuum that allowed revisionism to take power.
After his death in 1969, the Left line was completely liquidated. The remaining Party leaders fell into centrism or revisionism, and no significant group represented the left line in Vietnam.
Thiago: How did the restoration of capitalism and bourgeois dictatorship occur in Vietnam? How do the State, the Party and the Vietnamese economy work today?
Thang: The dictatorship of the bourgeoisie in Vietnam began after the death of Ho Chi Minh and the seizure of power by the revisionist clique, transforming Vietnam into a semi-colony of Soviet social-imperialism. The complete restoration of capitalism in Vietnam began in 1986, when the Doi Moi reform transformed Vietnam from a semi-colony of Soviet social-imperialism into a semi-colony of American imperialism and Chinese social-imperialism, strengthening thus the semi-feudal state.
(Additional note from Luu based on Thang's response: They, the revisionists, adopt the theory of productive forces, similar to that of Deng Xiaoping in every way. This liquidated the Party, turning it into a lap dog of foreign imperialists Vietnam is currently a police state, a bourgeois dictatorship. The economy is heavily controlled by the Yankee and Chinese imperialists, the state also maintains friendly relations with foreign companies and imperialists, as they cooperate with them against the people. in general and the proletariat in particular)
Thiago: What are your criticisms of Ho Chi Minh's centrist deviation and subsequent adoption of "Ho Chi Minh Thought" by his successors? Were there any prominent leaders “to the left” of Ho Chi Minh in Vietnam?
Luu: We must criticize Ho Chi Minh's centrism and recognize that he liquidated the left line. We recognize that centrism is a very dangerous thing, even if it is not overtly anti-communist like the right line, but it creates an opening for the right line. We could compare his errors with those of Kim Il-Sung and other leaders who adopted the same positions: at his death, in his will, he did not say to defend Chairman Mao's line, but wanted " not to intervene in the affairs of other nations", although he was sympathetic to Albania and China, he also did not attack the right line, but he nevertheless refused conciliation with the Americans and the policy of capitulation that the Khruschevists were trying to impose on us. However, Vietnam fought nothing else.
Concerning "Ho Chi Minh Thought", those who claim it are dogmatists, taking its centrism as dogma, focusing on its revolutionary morality and asserting that the People's War was a contribution of Ho Chi Minh and not of Mao Zedong. They denied the influence of Mao Zedong Thought on Ho Chi Minh Thought, distorting Ho Chi Minh Thought, claiming that it is influenced by reactionary religions and ideals, transforming it from a revolutionary theory into a reactionary theory. There were no representatives of the left line, only opportunists.
Thiago: What do you think of President Gonzalo and his contributions of universal value? How are anti-revisionism and Maoism perceived in Vietnam?
Thắng: As Marxist-Leninist-Maoists, we cannot but recognize the role of President Gonzalo and his significant contributions to Marxist theory. He identified Maoism as the third and highest phase of Marxism, stating that Maoism is the Marxism-Leninism of the era of imperialism and modern revisionism. In addition, he made important contributions to Maoist theory, such as the militarization of the Communist Party, the theory of Jefatura [“Great Direction” in French, editor's note, cdp.] and the theory of concentric construction of the Party. These contributions are not only valuable for the Peruvian revolution, but also have universal relevance for the international socialist revolution. We must not forget this.
As for the influence of President Gonzalo and his ideology in Vietnam, initially, it was only mentioned through campaigns aimed at degrading his reputation by the government in place. In recent years, with the rise of the communist movement in Vietnam, the Gonzalo question has become an important issue among communists in our country. The revisionists, Trotskyists and pseudo-Maoists always seek to deny the role of President Gonzalo and use the propaganda tools of the imperialists to oppose him. Additionally, government loyalists and liberal forces are participating in this “campaign.” Thus, revisionists, reactionaries, and anti-communists created a sort of “sacred alliance” to oppose Gonzalo’s thought and contributions. Therefore, the immediate task of Vietnamese communists today is to wage a line struggle to defend President Gonzalo, uproot the weeds of modern revisionism, and advance toward the reconstitution of the Vietnamese Communist Party.
Thiago: How is the revolutionary movement developing in Vietnam and what are the current struggles of the masses in urban and rural areas?
Thang: The current “leaders” of the organized revolutionary movement are petty bourgeois. There are so-called “Marxist” groups, such as the “Red Flag League” and the “Young Marxists of Vietnam”. These petty bourgeois groups use memes to propagate and agitate, which is an action to ridicule Marxism, because Marxism is a revolutionary science and cannot be expressed through memes. This action is particularly remarkable among the Young Marxists of Vietnam.
There are also fake "Maoists" like the "Red Flag League", who deny Gonzalo and "defend" the Marxism-Leninism of Mao Zedong Thought, denying the advancement of the revolutionary struggle. They also engage in unnecessary debates online. These guys are also trying to make money by organizing readings of Chairman Mao Zedong's quotes instead of making them universal for the masses.
Luu: There are many strikes and disorganized revolutionary movements within the proletariat, which speak out against their conditions of exploitation. Many peasants are in conflict with the state over land issues. There was a recent revolt in which peasants attempted to reclaim their land by armed methods, such as during the Dong Tam revolt, but they were quickly and brutally suppressed by the so-called state “socialist”. Many uprisings have also taken place in the Central Highlands, but some of them have fallen under the influence of foreign reactionary terrorist groups and are not spontaneous like others. The masses are ready to fight for the revolution, but they are still disorganized.
Thiago: What is the general impression that the masses have of the Communist Party? What daily problems do the masses face and how are they exploited by capitalism and semi-feudalism in Vietnam today?
Luu: Within the petty bourgeoisie, there are two main camps, there is the opposition camp and the loyalist camp. The loyalist camp is generally made up of children of bureaucrats and people who know little about the state. The opposition camp is mainly represented by South Vietnam loyalists, all anti-communist, while the loyalists appear to be communist, but they leave communism aside, being only pro-state and anti-West.
Among the peasants and proletariat, we are not sure, but from what we see, the majority of them do not openly support the state, being rather neutral about the situation. However, the opposition of these classes, notably peasants and indigenous peoples, who took up arms and rose up against the state, was brutally repressed by the police forces. The only indigenous armed groups that carry out terrorist attacks are those sponsored by the United States and CIA agents, but they do not represent all indigenous movements and peasant movements that oppose the state.
The condition of the proletariat in Vietnam is not what one would call good, as even the state claims that many workers live in poverty and misery. The examples are numerous: their salary is not as good as the revisionists claim, and they barely earn enough to survive, as capitalism dictates. Even though schedules are not as strict and conditions are not as bad as in laissez-faire capitalism (like in Bangladesh or other Asian countries), state-controlled unions do the bare minimum to support the workers and seek to make them accept their crumbs and not to organize them.
A friend (who was 14, illustrating child labor) and a family member of mine worked in sweatshops and currently are in poor health, have difficult living conditions, work long hours and are not not paid enough for their efforts.
Thiago: What is the semi-colonial relationship that Vietnam maintains today with North American imperialism and Chinese social-imperialism?
Thang: That’s a great question! The relationship between the Vietnamese bureaucratic capitalist government and the Yankee and Chinese imperialists constitutes one of the most peculiar international relations for the Vietnamese state. First, the state called their relationship with them a "comprehensive strategic partnership", established with China in 2008 and with the United States in 2023. They export capital and goods to Vietnam, establish factories and monopolize the market . This relationship deepens the exploitation of capitalism and the semi-feudal condition of Vietnam.
Additional note from Luu: In terms of industry, citing data from the General Bureau of Statistics, Ministry of Science and Technology, about 75% of Vietnam's technology and equipment come from foreign countries, this technology and equipment mainly come from developed countries and regions such as the United States, South Korea and the European Union, which have shown a slight upward trend in recent years (2022 data). Therefore, Vietnam is unable to develop many important industrial technologies (such as oil refining technology, metallurgy, shipbuilding, etc.), because Vietnam's industry is heavily dependent on foreign capitalist conglomerates.
Additionally, Vietnam is a “global sweatshop” with abundant resources and cheap labor. Therefore, Vietnam has become an ideal location for capitalist conglomerates from the United States, China and other capitalist countries to export capital, establish factories and enterprises, invest and control commercial capital in our country. The working class must endure hardship with low wages and difficult living conditions, without enjoying the fruits of their labor, which are instead seized by the capitalist class.
Moreover, the export of goods from the United States and China has disrupted the Vietnamese market, as the revolutionaries of the Dong Kinh Nghia Thuc movement once said: "If our products are not purchased from the Chinese, they are bought from the West.”
Vietnamese agriculture relies heavily on Chinese traders, as agricultural products always depend on the purchasing needs of traders. Therefore, many difficulties are often encountered if China imposes border closures. Furthermore, the question of the “lease system” persists in certain small localities in central Vietnam, Vietnam still having feudal characteristics.
Thiago: How is the history of Vietnam, the international communist movement and Marxism taught in Vietnamese schools and universities?
Thang: There was a push towards nationalism and nationalist propaganda in Vietnamese schools by the revisionist clique, they masked Vietnamese settler colonialism against indigenous people and other minorities under the idea of "expansion of territory through the recovery of wild lands” that they were formerly Champa and Chenla (Kampuchea Krom Region). This colonialism was called the “Nam Tien” march south and lasted for centuries. The revisionists also liquidated and erased the history of the struggle for autonomy of ethnic minority groups, supported by Ho Chi Minh.
Luu adds: There were autonomous zones in the North and Northwest mountains, and there was also the Autonomous Mountain People's Movement within the National Liberation Front.
The revisionists have omitted many important parts of the international revolutionary movement. They also dogmatically teach Marxism as a theory without practice in universities, leading students to label it a "nightmare" and only study it to succeed in college, instead of viewing it as a scientific view of the world. They present the Great Debate as a simple “Sino-Soviet split” rather than an international struggle against revisionism. They try to get people to “believe the Party line” without reservation. They immaterialize and trivialize Marxism in general.
Thiago: What is your opinion on Democratic Kampuchea [ Cambodia, editor's note, cdp.] and Laos? Is there a Marxist-Leninist-Maoist movement in these two countries today?
Luu: This is a delicate question for us. We recognize the national liberation of the people of Kampuchea led by the Communist Party of Kampuchea against the military dictatorship and the American imperialists. We maintain a neutral view of the policies implemented under his government, but we understand that Pol Pot betrayed the Cambodian revolution by supporting the revisionist clique of Deng Xiaoping and arresting the so-called "Gang of Four."
Pol Pot fell into revisionism in his later years. We also oppose the Vietnamese invasion of Kampuchea and the Chinese invasion of Vietnam; which was just a repeat of the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968. It was a war that only served the profits of two social-imperialist blocs.
Laos today is a semi-colony of Chinese social-imperialism. This country owes China around 25 billion dollars and has had to destroy many lands and rubber plantations. In 2021, the Laos–China (Vientiane–Kunming) high-speed railway line entered service. In addition to tourism needs, this railway is also used to transport timber, rubber, food and minerals from Laos to China. This railway is part of the so-called “Belt and Road” proposed by the Xi Jinping clique.
The People's Revolutionary Party was formed after the Second Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam. In the 1950s, they were not a puppet of Soviet social-imperialism, but became one in the 1960s, falling completely into revisionism after the war and after gaining independence. , being occupied by fifty thousand Vietnamese soldiers, which signifies their dependence on revisionist Vietnam and the social-imperialist USSR. After the fall of the USSR, it became a semi-colony of China.
We have no further information on the Communist Movement in Laos and Kampuchea, so we cannot say anything further on this matter.
FINAL NOTES:
Thang: We are very grateful for this interview, it not only marks the solidarity between the Vietnamese and Brazilian proletariat, but also serves as a great example of proletarian internationalism in the class struggle, the national liberation struggle against imperialism and revisionism. Red salute from Vietnam!

Moderate risk now included in day 2 SPC forecast
Day 2 Convective Outlook NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK 1258 PM CDT Mon May 20 2024
Valid 211200Z - 221200Z
...THERE IS A MODERATE RISK OF SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS ACROSS SOUTHERN IOWA...NORTHWEST ILLINOIS AND FAR NORTHEAST MISSOURI...
...SUMMARY... Severe storms are expected Tuesday across the Midwest, especially including portions of Iowa and Missouri into Wisconsin and western/northern Illinois. Tornadoes (a few strong), damaging wind gusts, and large hail are expected.
...LoweMiddle Missouri Valley to the Upper Great Lakes... A notably strong belt of cyclonically curved westerlies (70+ kt 500 mb) will extend from the south-central Great Plains to the Upper Midwest and Upper Great Lakes on Tuesday, with a lead/convectively augmented shortwave trough likely to spread from the central High Plains toward the Lake Superior vicinity late Tuesday night. An elongated surface low over eastern Nebraska Tuesday morning will deepen and lift northeast to northern Wisconsin/Upper Michigan by evening, with a surface warm front lifting northward ahead of the surface low, although its effective position will likely be influenced by the early day precipitation. Meanwhile, a trailing cold front will surge east across Iowa/eastern Kansas/northern Missouri from mid-afternoon into the evening.
Remnant clusters of storms will likely be ongoing Tuesday morning across central/eastern Nebraska, with the possibility of additional storms farther east across southern Iowa/northern Missouri in association with a warm-advection regime. Some key uncertainties persist about the influences of this early day convection, but trends will be for quick air mass recovery given a progressive/highly dynamic pattern.
Very steep mid-level lapse rates will overspread the increasingly moist warm sector, supporting aggressive diurnal destabilization especially on the southern fringe of lingering convection/cloud cover. Significantly strengthening mid-level winds and a diurnally persistent strong low-level jet will support initial supercells capable of large hail and a few tornadoes, including strong (EF2+) tornado potential. But a mixed/transitional mode is expected overall, as upscale growth occurs given the degree of forcing for ascent, with likely evolution into a well-organized/fast-moving QLCS capable of increasingly widespread/intense damaging winds and a continued QLCS-related tornado risk. This scenario currently appears to be most probable across southern/eastern Iowa into northwest Illinois and nearby far northern Missouri. The severe risk will persist into the Upper Great Lakes region and middle Mississippi Valley overnight.
...Southern Plains... Convective coverage will likely decrease with southward extent as large-scale ascent focuses northward toward the Great Lakes. Nevertheless isolated storms are possible into northeast Oklahoma/northwest Arkansas by late afternoon/evening, and more conditionally with southwest extent near a dryline from central Oklahoma into central Texas. Large hail and severe gusts will be possible with this activity.
...Northeast States... A weak upper shortwave trough will move across southern Quebec and northern New England. This will result in a band of enhanced westerly deep-layer flow from northern New York into Maine. A seasonally moist airmass will be in place with surface dewpoints into the low 60s F, with strong heating and steepening low-level lapse rates. MLCAPE to around 1000 J/kg and effective shear magnitudes around 35 kt will support organized cells. Elongated hodographs and favorable vertical shear suggest marginally severe hail will be possible along with locally damaging wind gusts.
