2024.05.21 03:06 ElectronicHeat8473 chance me for premed & bsmd pls (rising senior at competitive nj hs)

Hi! So I'm a high school junior (technically rising senior but whatever) in NJ and I'm at a really competitive high school (like 40-50 kids ended up going to a t50 this year). I'm interested in pre-med and BSMD but I'm not sure what's better since money is a factor for me that my parents want to consider.
Demographics: Female, Asian, NJ, public school, no hooks
Intended Major: Biology
SAT: 1530 first attempt (780 math 750 reading/writing)
UW/W GPA and Rank: School doesn't rank or do UW but 4.34 W and I'd assume something like 3.7-3.8 UW? I have 3 B's in Honors and AP classes from sophomore year and 2 B+'s my junior year in AP classes but the rest are A's
Coursework: APUSH (3), AP Seminar (4), AP Physics 1, AP Calculus AB, AP US Government and Politics, AP Research. Will be taking AP Lit, AP Bio, AP Psych and AP Calc BC my senior year
Honors/Awards:
Extracurriculars:
Essays/LORs/Other: I have no idea what I'm going to write my essays on but I'm planning to start in the summer so they will definitely be pretty good. As for LORs, I'm asking my AP Research teacher and my Human Anatomy and Physiology teacher. Both know me very well and can speak on my growth as a person and ambition for medicine.
Schools I'm Considering:
I'm quite honestly only really concerned about all the BSMD programs and Ohio State. I really want to get a full ride to Ohio State to go there. I also don't know if my GPA is up to par with the BSMD expectation because I do have a handful of B's on my transcript from Honors and AP Classes...
So please let me know what you think!

2024.05.20 03:11 bubmet7 Not able to go

Hi all. I am 25 years old, and I am unable to go to college. I live 45 minutes away from the nearest campus, I have only been a resident of my state (Indiana) for 2 years, do not have any financial ability to pay, and have no internet options at my home. The campus is in the wrong direction from work which is already 45 minutes away, they are about an hour apart from each other. I work 40 hours a week and am depending on my SO’s mom for a house as my parents moved out and I was not able to keep up with the mortgage on my childhood home, and this house I live in is about 20 minutes away from the nearest internet provider’s cut off. Would anyone have absolutely any idea how I could get into college at this point? I refuse to live a life consisting of being uneducated and working jobs that to me are not worth my time intellectually. The jobs I speak of are absolutely important, and some people love being challenged physically more than intellectually- but I much more prefer exercising my mind and these jobs do not bring me any sort of fulfillment. I also know time is running out for me, as already at 25 I am older than the average college student. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated. As far as I am aware I do not qualify for 95% of financial aid, and I never seem to catch fasfa at a good time before their scholarships runout.

2024.05.19 04:05 Let_me_tell_you_ Engineering scholarships

We are not from Indiana. My son was supposed to attend our state flagship university but today he said we would like to go to Purdue. He never asks for anything so this means he really wants it. We make $150k a year before taxes and we will not qualify for any income based financial aid. We cannot afford attendance, even after the $16k merit scholarship the Purdue offers.
Are there generous merit based scholarships for out of state engineering students in addition to the general ones? The college website is very vague. My son has 1510 on the SAT and 34 in the ACT. He will have 6 AP exams by the time he applies and ranks 3 out of 500 students in his class (top 10 high school in the state). Has 3 extra curriculars but nothing fancy. Should he take the SAT or ACT again or enroll in more ECs to increase his chances of admission or scholarships?

2024.05.17 02:26 Historical-Cream-866 Going to Law School is the right choice. Or is it?

I have been thinking about this question for a long time, but for some reason, I am not sure if my logic behind my answer is sound, and if it is, I don’t know if I should go to law school this year or whether it really matters which law school I go to. I have been working for top law firms as a patent agent for a few years, doing prep and pros patent work for pretty big name clients and widely used inventions. Also, started a hybrid legal tech company, which I ultimately want to grow and turn it to my full time job (hopefully making it more financially rewarding than BL salaries). If this business doesn’t turn out right, then I wouldn’t mind working as a traditional patent lawyer, which might not be as rewarding for me, but still a pretty decent background option. Regardless, I want to go to law school to firstly make more connections, which is especially important for growing my startup, and get a degree that allows me to earn ownership of legal businesses, whether that means making to partner at an LLP or becoming a CEO.
As far as where I’m at with the current cycle so far, I have good enough GRE scores (167 Verbal and 169 Quant and no LSAT scores, although my LSAT diagnostics were in the high 150s and low 160s). I have admission to UIUC with $ (still negotiating) and got waitlisted at GULC (regular waitlist for both full time and part time program - no interview), WashU (did the interview), BU, Texas A&M (did the optional interview), UGA, UF, and Indiana. Somewhat sure that I can get some need-based scholarship at WashU and GULC, if admitted, because of my disadvantaged background, and scholarships are an important factor. Applied to all of these schools from mid to late February and couldn’t break it into a couple of the T-14s I applied to (Like NU, NYU, Berkeley, and UVA). I am URM (if it still matters after affirmative action), a 1st-gen college and will be a 1st-gen law graduate. I guess another soft is that I graduated with more than 3 STEM degrees, but LSAC gpa is 3.2 (for more context, I wrote addendums describing the hardships experienced throughout undergrad and masters and my overall writing material was pretty good based on the feedback received). Also applied to law school during the last cycle with a slightly worse GRE, and did not get in to law school.
Honestly, I feel overworked and maybe a bit burnt out, and don’t know if I have it in me to study for the LSAT and reapply to law schools. The traditional or default wisdom in this sub has been to try for next year, but I think that doesn’t necessarily apply to me given all of the context above. With that said, I can try to find motivation if I really see the point in it. At the same time, I know I’m generally on the right track as far as education and professional goals, but don’t have a complete picture yet. Now that we’re nearing the end of this cycle and seeing all of the speculation and sometimes false hope about waitlists movements, I’m very close to just jumping the gun and going to UIUC.
Anywho, this is a long post fasho, but what do you think I should do?
Should I fully commit to UIUC maybe because even though it’s not a T-14 it’s still good enough for my goals? Or still work the waitlists with new rounds of follow ups to LOCIs for GULC and WashU which I realistically like more than the other schools I applied to? Or give up on going to law school and stick to my startup idea? Or do you think I may have an option that I’m just not seeing?

2024.05.17 01:43 SaltBoy_6226 Looking for a Summer Job for Three Weeks. Anybody Hiring?

Hello everyone! I'm a soon-to-be high school graduate (graduation is on the 25th!) looking for a summer job I can do for approximately 3 weeks before I leave (June 16th) to participate in research at an out-of-state school. Do you guys know of any place that would hire me for that short period of a time? It can really be anything, I just want something to do and get some pocket change before I go on to do bigger things. The only "job" experience I have was a two week unpaid internship during May 2023 as a Computer Science Intern at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana. Most of my background has been in taking intensive college courses while still in high school, like Multivariable Calculus, Differential Equations, Linear Algebra, etc, hence why I haven't had much actual job experience.
I've finished high school with a 4.14 GPA (on a Weighted 4.33 GPA scale, where an A/A+ = 4.33), have participated in loads of extracurriculars, and have won many academic awards during my time in school (with a full ride scholarship to a private out-of-state school). I say all this because I assume that for a recent high school grad, employers would want to see what I've done during high school. I also do have a driver's license with a car at my disposal, so transportation wouldn't be a problem. I live in the West Lafayette area, so jobs in West Lafayette would be preferable, however I am open to Lafayette options too. If anyone has any ideas, let me know!

2024.05.15 14:29 Adarsh8888 ‼️ Please help me in finalizing my university‼️

I have been offered admission into Virginia tech meng cs at NCR, George Mason University ms cs, Indiana University Indianapolis ms cs (formerly IUPUI).
Virginia Tech:- Ofcourse, this course is not in main campus. International students can only do this course at NCR campus. There aren't any assistantship offered at this campus. So, the only perk is its brand value but my main question is, to what extent this brand value will benefit me in getting intern/full time?
GMU:- The main advantage of this is it has assistanships and funding opportunities. Both vtech and gmu are close to DC area, which will helpful to get intern. Also gmu and vtech have almost similar fee
Indiana University Indianapolis:- The ranking of IUl is 110 for cs where as vtech and gmu have 38 and 64, respectively. The big advantage of IUl is it would cost me very less. The fees is about 35k after removing scholarship amount. But, IUPUl is changing to lUl from this fall. So this will be first batch.
Based on the present job market should I invest more money to the brand and ranking of Vtech and gmu. Or go ahead with a average ranking and less costing, lUl

2024.05.14 08:30 Acceptable_Rice_3021 How can some schools justify their 6 figure tuition ?

I did my MBA precovid (graduating c/o 2019) at a T30 where I got a full ride scholarship. It was a good school and over the past 5 years I felt that I’ve gained a good knowledge and I wouldn’t be where I’m at without my MBA. However I, by no means, went to the likes of HBS (Harvard), GSB (Stanford), Wharton (UPenn), Sloan(MIT), CBS (Columbia), where the schools can charge $180k tuition for their name brand degree.
But what about smaller schools such as Mays (Texas A&M), Merage (UC Irvine), Broad (Michigan State). These T35-50 still charge between 80-120k for their programs. This blows my mind. The best ROI I’ve seen outside of the T20 are Kelley (Indiana, #22) and Scheller (Georgia Tech, #27). Other than these two and a few others I can’t honestly see smaller schools charging so much. While I had a great time in my T30, I wouldn’t have gone there unless I was getting a significant (> 75%) scholarship (full ride in my case).
How can an international or even domestic student justify leaving their work for two years to attend these programs while taking on $100k debt ? How can schools charge so much ?

  7. Debate conference chair
  8. Co-Editor-in-Chief - School Newspaper
  9. President - Social Studies Honor Society, VP English Honor Society (combined these in one again bc i didn't have space)
  10. Mentor & Mock Senator - Mock Congress
Awards/Honors
In additional info section I put:
National Recognition Small Town and Rural Scholar
AP Scholar with Distinction
Letters of Recommendation (guessing bc I haven't read them)
LOR 1: English teacher that I've had for two years, she spontaneously sent my parents an email just to tell them that she was proud of my work in the class, asked me to use my essays as examples for her freshman classes, and was really excited that I asked her for a LOR and she wrote it the week I asked her. I can't exactly rate because I haven't read but hoping (9/10)
LOR 2: Human Geo teacher, always said good things about me in parent teacher conferences, recommended me for an internship and wrote a very heartfelt letter, again hard to estimate when I haven't read but hopefully (8.5/10)
LOR 3: Campaign Manager - i think it would be very sweet, talk about how hardworking and passionate I am but not a one-in-a-million rec letter yk, i'd guess (7.5/10)
Interviews
Georgetown (10/10); Cornell (11/10 non evaluative but I wish it was bc it went so good smh); Dartmouth (9/10) - im just a good yapper if u couldn't tell; interviews is where I shine
Essays
7/10 Common App Essay: I think idea was great, execution may have fell short. Alot of people who have read it, including 2 english teachers and 2 counselors, have loved it and gave me no feedback on it telling me not to change a thing. but on the other hand it was harshly critiqued by some current college students. re-reading it i feel like i could've done a better job, and maybe i'm a little disappointed but i might be too hard on myself after being influenced by others opinions. the one thing i'm certain about tho is its attention-grabbing, funny, and unconventional.
Supplements: Varied by school but i think mostly 8/10 or even dare i say some were 9/10. i loved alot of my RD supplements, my EA supplements were good but i think i really got the hang of writing by RD time.
Decisions
Acceptances:
Waitlists:
Dartmouth (RD) LET ME INNN 🙏
UCLA (RD) pls manifest for me🕯🕯
UC Berkeley (RD) PLSS I BEGG I WILL FIND A NEW ELEMENT OR SOMETHING IN HONOR OF BEREKELY (berkelium who? 👀) (don't hold me to this tho I am NOT a woman in STEM!)
UNC Chapel Hill (EA-OOS)
Rejections
IN SUMMARY, all my hard work feels worth it (over half a mil in scholarships + some dream schools 🤑) I really started to lose hope after my cornell deferral but I channeled my energy to 27 college apps and it might have been crazy but it was worth it for me - everything worked out in the end. I hope this can give some hope to people who are test optional or don't have the best stats bc I really think it was my ECs and essays that helped me the most.
I didn't even apply to Harvard bc all these college apps had me burnt out and I maxed out my common app but watch out Harvard law 🔜! what, like its hard? thanks elle woods for motivating me through this application cycle 😗
now plsssss help me decide, I only have a day left to respond to my barnard waitlist and I don't know what to do!
barnard was such a dream for me, but so was cornell! before my barnard waitlist, I was planning on going to Rutgers for my first year bc it was the cheapest and then using my transfer option to do my next 3 years at cornell. at barnard, I get the best of both worlds w the city at my disposal and the resources of columbia + a tight knit women's community and a full four year college experience that I wouldn't get with the transfer option. but barnard is 60k more for the first year in comparison to Rutgers, and while the costs are the same for the rest of the 3 idk If I can justify 60k since it'll be a financial strain for my family and I could rather save money for law school If if go. with Rutgers + Cornell, I like my major in Cornell's ILR School more and the academic opportunities more + save lots of money, I just don't know how I feel abt transferring.

2024.05.12 17:49 ZappaOMatic [OC] In 1939, DePauw running back Alex Vraciu threw an eraser at his professor during a quiz and jumped out the second-story window as part of a prank that made national news. He went on to become a flying ace in World War II with 19 victories, including 6 in the Great Marianas Turkey Shoot.

Alexander Vraciu was one of the Navy's finest flying aces during World War II. But before that, he was a simple lad at DePauw University who played football and a prank for the ages.

At DePauw

The son of an East Chicago policeman, Vraciu earned the four-year Edward Rector Foundation Scholarship to DePauw on May 3, 1937 out of Washington High School, where he was the editor-in-chief for the school yearbook and captained the tennis team.[1] The scholarship, worth $1,000 ($21,689.72 today), was awarded to 110 high schoolers across sixteen states that year.[2]
Upon matriculating at DePauw that fall, he tried out for football—in secret, against his parents' wishes—and joined the freshman team as a halfback.[3] They struggled early on, getting shut out 32–0 by Butler (in fairness, Butler's freshmen had not lost to anyone in four years at this point) while playing Wabash to a scoreless tie.[4] Still, his contributions earned him a starting spot on the varsity roster.[5]
In 1938, DePauw's 50th season began with a 13–0 win over Franklin. Playing in all three phases like many at the time, Vraciu was the backup halfback behind the baseball team's star pitcher Karl "Curly" Randells while also doubling as a linebacker and the Tigers' lead return man. His special teams value came in handy in the third quarter when Franklin was forced to punt from their own end zone and Vraciu returned it to the 17-yard line, which set up John Scott's one-yard touchdown run to break the scoreless draw.[6]
His season was upended in the following week's 41–0 victory over Evansville College when he twisted his knee in the second quarter; fellow backup running back Robert Soule was also knocked out for the year with an arm injury.[7][8] Not wanting his parents to know that he was playing football behind their backs, he had to hide the injury from them, which proved difficult as he was also a member of the mile relay and tennis teams.[3] Even with his football career cut short, he still earned a spot on a postseason all-American roster, kind of: he was first-team All-Unpronounceables, for players whose names all-star team creator Ed Nace could not say properly.[9]

The Prank

In the summer of 1939, Vraciu was attending a psychology class taught by Paul J. Fay. The class was intended to study "a human's ability to observe, and accurately recall what was observed," and Fay tested his students perhaps a bit too zealously as he frequently started random "fights" before asking the class who was involved and what happened.[3][10]
Tired of this, Vraicu decided to see if Fay "could take some of his own medicine." On the final day of class, while taking a quiz, he suddenly stood up and threw an eraser at the professor. Vraciu then proclaimed, "I just can't stand it any longer!", and made a beeline for the window before jumping out.[10]
Since the classroom was on the second floor, Fay immediately rushed to the window in horror. Upon gazing down, he saw Vraciu laying on a tarp held by his Delta Chi fraternity brothers and thumbing his nose at him.[10][11]
The prank made national headlines. The Chicago Tribune, who had Vraciu and his friends re-enact the prank for a photo, quipped, "Give him an A in the course!"[11][12]
"I like to see students on their toes," Fay remarked.[13] "Vraciu is an excellent jumper and a good student besides. I'm giving him an A in the course."

World War II

A pre-medicine major, Vraciu had plans of becoming a doctor after graduating.[14] Those plans were dropped when the United States entered the Second World War, and he opted to enlist in the Navy in 1942 as an aviation cadet. He underwent training at Naval Air Station Glenview.[15]
In November, while training in California, his training plane collided with another mid-air, forcing him to "re-enact" his prank again as they hopped out.[16] DePauw's student newspaper even headlined their story "Vraciu Parachutes from Wrecked Plane; Repeats Procedure of Stuent Prank."[11]
His first assignment was over Wake Island in October 1943, flying an F6F Hellcat for Fighter Squadron 6 (VF-6) under Edward O'Hare, who would receive the Medal of Honor after being killed in action the following month. Vraciu scored his first victory in just his second day, then became a flying ace with his fifth kill by January of the following year. By the time VF-6 was rotated out, he already had nine wins.[17]
Still, he elected to continue serving and was reassigned to VF-16.[17]
Vraciu's finest day came on June 19, 1944, during the Battle of the Philippine Sea. In a day that came to be known as the "Great Marianas Turkey Shoot", he shot down six Japanese bombers flying close in formation in eight minutes. He told a correspondent for The New York Times:[18]
We went out at a high altitude and from a far range we could see scattered groups of from twenty to fifty Jap planes each coming toward our carriers. They were all Judys. As squadron leader, I tallyhoed to the carrier and climbed to 25,000 feet, about 2,000 feet above the enemy planes.
For unknown reason they were all massed together with the groups at various altitudes. It was a brilliantly clear day, about 10:30 a.m. and from my observations there were enough Japs around to satisfy everybody in my squadron.
They were thirty-five miles away when we started after them, and as they tried to separate from their groups I was able to apply the simple process of picking them off the edges. You might say it was comparable to riding herd in the sky.
Just as the first Jap approached, my belly tank ran dry and I shifted to an auxiliary and took that one out easily. In making the shift, a lot of oil got on my windshield and made the vision so poor I had to go within 150 yards of the next one before stopping it. The next two were knocked out on a run of about fifteen seconds.
Next in line were three heading for an American destroyer. I was able to get two of those, and must have hit the bomb of one of them, for he exploded, scattering plane parts through the air. The third was foolish enough to attack a battleship, which was the end of him.
Although nominated by seven Navy admirals for a Medal of Honor for his performance that day, Vice Admiral George D. Murray of the medal review board instead gave him a Navy Cross. They tried again after the war in 1947 but was rejected by Murray again.[19]
"I do not, in any way, mean to detract from the very enviable record made by Lt. Vraciu during the war," began Murray.[20][21] "His superior performance of normal duties brought distinction upon himself. His failure, if it had occurred, to engage the enemy, on 19 June 1944, would have brought censure upon himself."
In 1990, Army veteran and aviation buff Harry Block convinced Rep. Andy Jacobs Jr. to organize a United States House Committee on Armed Services hearing to review the case. Although most of the committee including chairman Les Aspin were supportive of Vraciu, Navy assistant secretary for manpower and reserve affairs Barbara S. Pope—the lone Navy representative in attendance—questioned the need for a hearing 46 years later. Although Vraciu was supposed to testify, the hearing ran out of time and ended without a decision. The only positive takeaway was that the committee agreed Murray's reasoning for denying him the MOH was poorly written and missed numerous key points like listing Vraciu with the wrong squadron and aircraft carrier.[22][23]
By Vraciu's death in 2015, he was still without the MOH.
His last combat flight came in December 1944 when his oil tank was punctured by a Japanese bullet over the Philippines, forcing him to—you guessed it—jump from his plane. He was rescued by the Filipino resistance and supported them before returning to American ends.[18] At war's end, he had 19 victories in the air and 21 on the ground.[17]

2024.05.11 23:46 GunBeerFreedom Should I go to Ohio State or Indiana University for accounting?

I have a $13,500/yr merit scholarship from Ohio State and no merit scholarship from Indiana. They both are almost the exact same price without a scholarship. But Indiana's business school is apparently better and I like their campus slightly more. I am out of state for both schools.

2024.05.11 19:58 Byzantine_Merchant What are your predictions for the upcoming season?

We’re still adding players via the portal as we have about 12 open scholarship spots at the moment. But otherwise is pretty much full steam ahead to week 1. What are your predictions for the season?
Looking at this schedule here’s how I would view things.
Vs Florida Atlantic: W. This should be a near auto win. Though I expect there to be a lot of rust and developing chemistry at times.
@ Maryland: Lean W. This one is more in question. Lock has turned Maryland around but a lot of that was Taluia’s work. Ultimately I think we upgraded at most positions this offseason will pull away late. That said this will be a key swing game.
Vs Prairie View: W. FCS opponent Again this should be an auto win. I’d expect this to be the last chance at any in game tune ups this season.
@ Boston College: Lean W. Bill O’Brien I don’t think should be taken lightly at BC. The guy pretty much kept Penn State alive during its scandal and was a solid HC for the Texans. He’s not great at position coaching or playcalling though. That said, BC’s last HC bailed late to to be a position coach in Green Bay and they’ve been quiet on the transfer front so far. I think this is another early swing game but one that we should win.
Vs Ohio State: L. This is a near auto loss. Talent wise this Ohio State team should be among the best in the last 15 or so years. If Smith did win this though, no couch would be safe in EL.
@ Oregon: L. They lost Nix but picked up Moore as well as gained some key transfer pieces. Given how fast they turned Nix around, my moneys on them competing for a natty this year. If we’re somehow unbeaten after this game then we’re gonna need to rebuild Cedar Village.
Vs Iowa: Lean W. Look, they usually have a good defense and an elite TE. They got a new OC. But I’m not sure that’s enough. Similar to BC, I don’t think they’ve gained anyone of note through the portal yet. They don’t really have a good QB as of right now either. I think we pull this out in a slug fest.
@ Michigan: Lean L. That defense is still going to be good. Edwards will be good. Their OL will be good. Ultimately this is where I think our DT problems come to haunt us. They probably won’t be passing nearly as well. They won’t be as good. It’s possible to win. But on the road I think they’ll come out on top this year unfortunately. The good news is that the most brutal stretch of the season is over.
Vs Indiana: W. I think Indiana made a good hire actually. But that’s gonna be an absolute job and based on what both teams have added so far, I think that we’ll be just a few paces ahead of them this year.
@ Illinois: Lean W. Fun fact we haven’t had two straight home games yet. Honestly I think this a tight one. It’s a prove it year for Bret Bilemma and he’s consistently gotten defensive pieces to the NFL. But I’m pretty high on the upgrades we’ve made so far. So I’ll give it to us.
Vs Purdue: W. I honestly think that Purdue will be fighting to just stay out of last in the B1G. I’m not expecting us to be in that same boat at this time.
Vs Rutgers: Lean L. Monangai and a lack of DT depth. I think we can win. I think it’s a swing game. Especially late. But I also think that we can take one of the non-Big 4 games and attach an unexpected L to it. This one is the most likely in my mind this year as Schiano seems to be doing a good job with the program.
Record: 8-4.

So I’m super grateful I was able to get off the BU waitlist because I didn’t really like my other options. I’m still debating between BU and IU though because even though I hate the school, I know Kelley is ranked high. However, I’d be paying OOS tuition for Indiana and I feel like I can’t justify paying that much for a state school and a school that I don’t even like. I’m still conflicted though, so if anyone has any advice or recommendations pls share :) (I’m also still waiting on all my waitlists because I’d pick the others over BU)

2024.05.09 02:52 NewDatabase4433 Was offered $78k in merit scholarship

Interested in double majoring in art and business. Was offered $78k in scholarship. Would only have to pay 11k out of pocket. I heard aid is rare for SMU.
How is Meadows?? How developed are the students in their medium?
I know Cox is a big name in Dallas and Texas in general, but how about nationally? Please help me.
My other option is UMich which is $78k per year. I love it though and its my dream. It has everything I want and more. I'm waiting on leftover merit aid from their Taubman College (architecture and urban planning) as they claim they'll likely have leftover aid from those that did not commit by May 1st and did not receive an extension. I would major in comp sci and urban planning. I heard the school was super competitive. The UMich alumni scholarship that I applied for is coming out May 10th.
I have to commit to SMU by 15th
I have to commit to UMich by 12th
Should I just commit to SMU??

2024.05.08 06:51 DarthWales_ Am I making a bad decision?

I don't really think I'm making a bad decision because I will benefit from it but I want to hear other opinions. I struggled a little bit to choose between SMU and Syracuse, but ultimately chose SMU. I still haven't committed and those around me are making me wait till it's closer to my deadline of May 15, so that I can be sure in my decision. I'm getting restless, I want to commit already.
Choosing SMU ultimately means that I would have to pay 21K in tuition and fees but that's covered. I have funds for that for all four years. I would study either marketing or accounting although I started off by wanting to pursue marketing. Now I find myself wanting to pursue accounting more, alongside a double major in sports management. SMU stayed as my number one choice due to the Cox school of business and its reputation (mainly in Texas, where l'm from). Honestly, it was my dream school since junior year when I started applying to colleges, I even cried when I received my acceptance into the business school jaja
Although I did have an offer from Syracuse that entitled me to a full ride scholarship. I know it's also really good school and going to school for free is awesome, but I feel like SMU might be better for me. Am I in the right to choose SMU? I think so, but sometimes people make me doubt. Also, I hate the cold and would not like to live in New York.
I swear this is the last time I talk about this, so sorry. I’m just really troubled and kind of bad at making decisions because I doubt myself sometimes even though I know what I want I guess… also because people in my life can be so persuading about certain things and I’m a bit gullible. I’m also very stressed in general. Less than 10 more days of this torture!

2024.05.07 18:55 cyberwitch0 Business Course

Hi guys, I’m torn between two universities right now which is IU and UConn, I know that Us News ranking wise, UConn is better than Indiana University, however I literally can not find any information on UConns business course and wether its good or not. Indiana University on the other hand prides itself itself in its Business school.
I got a 40k scholarship from UConn which is what made me consider it (I’m an international Student) and I had a scholarship issue with IU where they neglected my scholarship deadline. IU doesn’t seem to be too eager to fix their mistake though.
I wasn’t immediately accepted to The Kelley Business school (IU) though, just their pre-business course which is sad, but i will apply for start admission after the end of my first semester.
Can anybody give me and info on UConns business course and wether its worth enrolling?
Thank you in advance

2024.05.05 01:26 dcmetro7 I am slightly skeptical of Kennedy's new poll

I am slightly skeptical of Kennedy's new poll
hello $2.90 stock image from https://www.shutterstock.com/image-vectopeople-shaking-hands-vector-handshake-two-234189016
Robert Kennedy Jr. is running for president as an independent candidate. He wants you to know he's serious, and that's he's not a spoiler. You know, that thing he called Ralph Nader in 2000? He's not that. He's going to win. And he's got the numbers to back it up, with a sleek new video to explain it all. He's got a gambit planned, to take Biden off the board with the cold and unfeeling hand of hard facts.
Disclaimer: I know that it is the job of Kennedy's campaign to make the optimistic pitch for Kennedy's chances. But since the optimistic pitch for Kennedy's chances is misleading and wrong, we should hold accountable the people who say misleading and wrong things.

Um, Nerd Alert!!!1

Kennedy's campaign recently released this video to explain the Big News, starring 'Director of Content' Jonathan Hiller. Hiller wants you to know that he's a bit of a nerd. A numbers guru. A 🤓, hold the ☝️. He just loves diving into the data and seeing where it leads, in a fair, even-handed manner. Let's explore the numbers with our new friend Jon.
i can assert with 95% confidence that this man still says 'amazeballs'
  • 0:47 'we conducted a nationwide poll of over 25,000 respondents, and our margin of error was 0.6%. That makes it, by far, THE most accurate predictor of the 2024 election that we have thus far.
I could not tell you with much confidence what a 'Director of Content' actually does. But from the way he talks about statistics, I'm guessing that working with statistics is not a big part of the job description.
First of all, he tries to dazzle the audience with numbers. It is true that most polls have sample sizes between 1,000 and 5,000 people, and it is indeed true that 25,000 is a larger number than either of those numbers. But sample sizes of around 1,000 have become the standard for offering a reasonable degree of precision -- a sample of 1,000 people from America's population of ~330,000,000 results in a margin of error of +/- 3%; this means, in simplified terms, that there's a 95% chance the real value is within 3 points of the poll's result. Why not use larger samples for issues of national importance, and have lower margins of error? In the words of Columbia stats professor Andrew Gelman, 'such larger samples generally a waste of time because public opinion varies enough from day to day that it is meaningless to attempt too precise an estimate. Indeed, to do so would be like getting on a scale in the morning and measuring your weight as 173.26 pounds.' To assert that level of precision six months out from an election is even less meaningful. For this reason, high-quality pollsters tend to focus on high-quality random samples to reduce bias, and thoughtful weighting techniques to make that sample as representative of the general population as possible. In short, quality trumps quantity; a well-designed study of 1,000 participants is superior to a shoddily-designed poll of 25,000. Put a pin in this.
Second of all, and more importantly, this is not how polls work, and this is not what the word 'accurate' means. In statistics, the words 'accurate' and 'precise' have distinct definitions, and statisticians are generally extremely careful to distinguish between the two.
if you know a Director of Content, please show them this diagram before it's too late
Accuracy is 'a measure of trueness or bias, how close the average value of your results is to the true value.' while
Precision is 'measure of variability or repeatability, or, how close your results are to each other.'
A low margin of error suggests high precision, as you'd expect future surveys conducted with different samples to give very similar results. But you cannot call this, or any other poll today, 'accurate,' because accuracy depends on one thing -- the closeness of your result to the true result. You know, the election that hasn't happened yet. Maybe they should have had their Director of Statistics make this video instead.
  • 1:04 'this is the head-to-head matchup between Biden and Trump. Trump with 294 and Biden with 244. Trump wins by 50 electoral votes, and if you're a political nerd like myself, you know that that is not very close.'
At this point, I"m starting to doubt not only that Mr. Hiller knows anything about statistics, but also that he's a 'political nerd' as he claims. Just as a statistician would not call a poll of an event that will only resolve in six months 'accurate,' a political nerd would not have such a boneheaded understanding of the Electoral College.
First of all, winning with 294 of the Electoral College votes would indeed be a historically close election. Winning 54.65% of the EC would result in the 9th-closest presidential election, in terms of percentage of the EC as a whole, in American history, sandwiched between Grover Cleveland's 1884 victory (which turned on just over a thousand votes in New York) and Jimmy Carter's win in 1976 (less than a two-point shift in just Ohio and Wisconsin would have flipped it to Ford).
Second of all, the EC margin does not accurately reflect the closeness of the election. You don't need to be a 'political nerd' to know this -- both 2016 and 2020 saw the victors winning 306 EVs (or 'not very close,' as Hiller calls it), but the elections came down to tiny margins in a few swing states. Trump swept the decisive states of WI, MI, and PA by less than a point each to win, while Biden's victory hinged on a 1.2-point victory in Pennsylvania.
  • 1:27 'in a head-to-head matchup, Robert F Kennedy Jr. wins 367 electoral votes versus Joe Biden's 171. Now that is what we call...a landslide' (landslide video)
Why was this even polled? Issues with the methodology aside. Kennedy's campaign is using this video to tell Biden that he should drop out. Trump dropping out is extremely unlikely and Kennedy doesn't seem to be pushing for this to happen.
  • 2:01 'so, to recap, Biden cannot beat Trump in a head-to-head race, and it is not close. Biden cannot beat Trump in a three-way race, and it's still not very close. Bobby wins in a landslide against Biden head-to-head. And Bobby beats Trump head-to-head. So wait, who's actually the spoiler here?
A compelling argument. I guess we're going to have to take a look at this poll.

the Oogie Boogie poll

At the bottom of that spoiler page from earlier, Kennedy provides three documents for us to peruse; two related to the poll by John Zogby Strategies, conducted between 4.13.24 and 4.21.24, and a powerpoint expounding on the poll. Let's take a look at this vaunted pinnacle of human forecasting achievement, also known as 'THE most accurate predictor of the 2024 election that we have thus far.'
I'm just going to give you a list of some of the more interesting state predictions this poll makes of a 2024 head-to-head between Trump and Biden, compared with how those states voted in 2020.
State 2024 Zogby prediction 2020 result projected swing
Utah R+2.7 R+20.5 D+17.8
Rhode Island D+4.6 D+20.28 R+16.2
Maine R+1.7 D+9.1 R+10.8
North Dakota R+18.8 R+33.4 D+14.6
Vermont D+21 D+35.4 R+14.4
Arizona R+11.6 D+0.31 R+11.9
Oregon D+3.9 D+16.1 R+12.2
Arkansas R+6.6 R+27.6 D+21
Oklahoma R+13.1 R+33.1 D+20
New York D+5.8 D+23.1 R+17.3
Virginia R+0.5 D+10.1 R+10.6
Missouri R+5.5 R+15.4 D+9.9
Indiana R+4.1 R+16.1 D+12
Now, maybe these are actually the leaked 2024 results. Maybe this is 'THE most accurate predictor of the 2024 election that we have thus far.' Maybe Traditional Democrats will power Biden to a twenty-point swing in Arkansas. But I am slightly skeptical that over a dozen states will swing by double digits in what appear to be entirely random directions. Reasonable people may ask what the hell happened here.
When you actually look at the poll itself, in the other document, an issue becomes clear from the very first page. Remember that '25,000 respondents' thing? Here's how they did it.
https://preview.redd.it/z3hbhxh6nhyc1.png?width=1146&format=png&auto=webp&s=fc931c2650217e13912a8196b6021d8ddaadc719
This was not a poll of 23,683 people, as the title suggests (which is less than 25,000 -- I guess counting isn't a skill expected from a Director of Content either); it's 50 polls, each with a sample size of around five hundred people. Remember when the campaign was dunking on those inferior polls that only had a thousand participants? Those unacceptable 3% margins of error in most regular polls? Every single mini-poll in this set falls below that mark. The lowest margin of error in this whole set comes for New York, with its n=740 for a population of 19.7 million clocking in at around 4%. This poll reminds me of the villainous Oogie Boogie from The Nightmare Before Christmas, in that it appears to be a unified and formidable presence, but when its seams are pulled, it is quickly revealed to be a sham composed of many tiny, pathetic components.
But that still doesn't explain how these numbers are so off. Look at some of these numbers -- Utah and Virginia as swing states. Missouri, Arkansas, and Oregon all close. You thought Democrats sweeping Arizona in the midterms would prevent them from a double-digit crash in the general?
This is normally where I'd look into the methodology, to see if there are any glaring errors that could result in these mistakes. But that turned out to be hard to do, as the poll only has the results. The only hint at the methodology comes from the title -- 'Interactive Survey of US Voters.' Interactive surveys usually use gamified elements ot hold the attention of the participants and convey the questions in a novel and easy-to-understand way. But obviously, when getting creative with your survey questions, you need to be extremely careful not to make design choices that will push users towards one option. And it seems like we'll never know what choices Zogby and co made.
When reading about Zogby, I quickly found that they're not the most reputable name in polling. Zogby is an old poll -- so old that Nate Silver called them the 'worst pollster in the world' in 2009, in which he criticizes their shoddy metholodogy for their online-based polls. Silver points out that, in 2008, Zogby had Obama favored in Arkansas, which other pollsters did not even consider possible (Obama lost AR in 2008 by twenty points) and had Obama close to victory in Oklahoma (he would lose it by over thirty.) Add on several misses in 2006, and it seems like Zogby's record of huge misses and secretive methods goes back a long way. If I worked for Kennedy's campaign, I might have commissioned them for this poll on their shoddiness alone, in the hopes of producing such an inexplicable poll to justify an unjustifiable campaign.

The powerpoint of desperation

In case that Hard Evidence didn't convince you, Kennedy's got one more arrow in his quiver: a good, old-fashioned slide deck laying out the case for Junior. And this thing is the cherry on the sundae. This is the document that convinced me that there is not a single person at the Junior Table who cares about the responsible use of statistics or avoiding misleading narratives. We have...
a PragerU graph -- that is, a visual that appears to convey quantitative data but, upon further inspection, contains no labeling or metrics that would allow a viewer to understand the numbers themselves. The only real takeaways are that RFK is in the Good Corner and Joe Biden is in the Bad Corner.
Junior pulls the old Truncated Axis trick, starting the Y-axis at a very high value to make the increase in this value look more pronounced than it is. Also, the year labels should be on the graph itself, rather than having to assume anything from the sources.
A table implying that Kennedy is more popular based on his website user data. This is misleading because voters know what Biden's policies are because he's been the president for the last four years. Voters don't know what Junior's policies are because few people knew who he was until recently.

When I saw this last image, I was a little confused. A 28-point gap in the popular vote is absolutely unheard of. It would outstrip Harding's 26-point margin over Cox in 1920, the biggest popular vote landslide in a contested election ever. And a sample size of 56,000? Apparently replicated by two separate pollsters, with the same results? I was unaware that TMZ had decided to dive into the polling space. The only polls I was ever aware TMZ did were those little web polls beneath their articles. Surely he's not talking about that.

Oh.
It's an opt-in website poll, the example every high school statistics teacher uses on the first day to demonstrate how meaningless data can be used to mislead people. And perhaps Junior's campaign should have checked the polls again, because their guy is apparently losing to Joe.
by the transitive property Biden will win a 49-state landslide
As for the supposed corroboration on the 64-36 number on Zogby, I have no idea what they're talking about. It asserts the presence of an n=56,000 poll from Zogby conducted in May 2023, but was apparently only reported on by TMZ in 2024. I can find no evidence of this n=56,000 poll anywhere, and TMZ has a grand total of 1 article even mentioning the term 'zogby' on their site, and it's from 2006. And furthermore, if they had a huge-sample Zogby poll showing Kennedy winning in a landslide, why wouldn't they show that one off instead of the n=25,000 one they're bringing up now?
Genuinely, the most likely outcome seems to be that they just duplicated the poll because the people who made this slide deck either have no inclination or no ability to actually fact-check anything they publish.

Who cares?

I know what you're thinking. Who cares? Biden isn't going to drop out and endorse Kennedy, and this is the kind of insane moonshot thinking you expect from longshot third-party candidates. And furthermore, most of his base are the kind of disaffected voters who wouldn't necessarily vote if he weren't on the ballot. And he might take more from Trump than Biden anyway. And that's all true, but I still think it's important to point this out.
Kennedy is a scammer. He's raising the hopes of people who will inevitably be let down. He's using slickly-edited videos and official-looking documents to scam voters who don't know a lot about politics into giving him their money, their time, and their support, all to support a vengeance-driven campaign sprouted from the rotting ego of a blue-blood who has accomplished nothing of value in his seventy years on this planet and yet demands that tens of millions of people roll out the red carpet for him and acclamate him, in reverance of the one thing of note he has: his name. And I hate scammers. That's all.
