2024.05.21 12:58 General-Cup3837 How the hell do you date as an introvert? Is online dating even for me?

I'm a guy in my 30s and pretty introverted. I have zero relationship experience in the sense I have never had a girlfriend in my 30 years. I don't have the best social skills but have been working on self improvement. Things have improved but I'm not a social butterfly. I'm not a very good texter in the sense making the texting exchange as entertaining as possible that will result in a date.
I'm told I'm average looking, 6 feet. Not super muscular yet, but I'm working out and exercising for 2 months now. I've been on dating apps for a couple of months, but haven't had a single match yet. Dating apps are pretty much destroying my confidence. I have kind of geeky hobbies, I'm introverted so I don't go to clubs, bars etc.
I'm beginning to wonder, is dating even for me? Dating apps feel like it's a rigged game. I thought it can't be that bad,but from the stories I've heard I'm starting to think they are right.
How the hell do you even date as an introvert that doesn't go to bar, clubs etc? I see people saying all the time just join a book club or sonething. I've had friends that did that but mostly people are already taken. I only have limited time as I work full time where I also have hobbies like riding my motor cycle, working out, running, gaming, watching movies etc.

2024.05.21 12:56 Letmelogin1 Being denied unemployment for a form that doesn't exist

The unemployment office is denying my application because they want my DD214 Member 4. This form no longer exists and despite me trying to explain this to them they are still not accepting that this is an issue. I am pissed because this reminds me of the time I tried to get food stamps in California and was denied because I didn't have a job. I wouldn't be here if I had a job stupid! What is the point of me paying into these programs if they are never available? Below is the last email I sent to her. Obviously a cunty response but I'm upset.
XXXX,
I just spoke to the Air Force Personnel Center and the form you are requesting no longer exists as of April. I have a reference from AFPC in this email below. You can also call them at 1-800-525-0102 to confirm with them yourself. I obviously will not be able to provide you with a document that no longer exists. The long form DD214 (one I sent you) is the only document being issued now for purposes such as unemployment. I have also opened a case with AFPC and have given them your information, so they may reach out to you as well. Please do your due diligence and reach out to me when you have confirmed this new information. I suspect policies on your end will need to be updated.

2024.05.21 12:55 chanma50 'Hit Man' Review Thread

I will continue to update this post as reviews come in.
Rotten Tomatoes: Certified Fresh
Critics Consensus: A deceptively dark thriller that's also loaded with laughs, Hit Man is an outstanding showcase for leading man Glen Powell -- and one of the most purely entertaining films of Richard Linklater's career.
Score Number of Reviews Average Rating
All Critics 96% 81 8.30/10
Top Critics 93% 27 8.00/10
Metacritic: 82 (21 Reviews)
Sample Reviews:
“Hit Man” is studded with delicious moments, but as amusing as the movie is it has a plot that sprawls forward in a rather ungainly fashion, and it goes on for too long. - Owen Gleiberman, Variety
Smart and steamy screwball fun. - Leslie Felperin, Hollywood Reporter
The comedy is a deliriously entertaining star vehicle for actor Glen Powell. - Ben Croll, TheWrap
“Hit Man,” Linklater’s latest film, falls into the fun-with-a-heart (and brain) category. It’s got a lot going for it. For one thing, there’s Linklater’s deft touch, particularly when juggling comedy and romance (with a little crime drama thrown in). 4/5 - Bill Goodykoontz, Arizona Republic
A smartly written, sublimely comedic, and sexy human-scale relationship story with a touch of just enough suspense and hints of criminality to prove that its title is not a complete misnomer. 4/5 - Cary Darling, Houston Chronicle
In the hands of a lesser director, Hit Man would surely have felt rather thin and disposable. But Linklater is a pro, and he manages to make the film’s fripperies feel borderline profound. 4/5 - Xan Brooks, Guardian
An intelligent comedy that contains plenty of laugh-out-loud moments and references Kant and Nietzsche, it is also a thriller that is darker than it first appears. - Jo-Ann Titmarsh, London Evening Standard
Hit Man trips along on great writing, Linklater’s witty, light-touch direction and a rich sense of place, but what makes it especially pleasurable is Powell and Arjona’s naturally steamy rapport. 4/5 - Robbie Collin, Daily Telegraph (UK)
... An effervescent comedy from Richard Linklater that simultaneously snubs its nose at the entire genre while easily nabbing the honour of most purely entertaining film to grace the Lido so far. 4/5 - Kevin Maher, Times (UK)
Another, crueller writer-director would have pivoted to scenes of bloody violence, but Linklater prefers to ponder the question of whether you can will yourself into becoming a different person. 4/5 - Nicholas Barber, BBC.com
A sorta-true story about an average guy who finds himself caught in a web of crime and deception, Hit Man is a cute and clever (sometimes overbearingly so) showcase for Powell’s magnetic charm. - Richard Lawson, Vanity Fair
The police scenes are just light enough to be funny, the screwball sequences are just dark enough to keep you on the edge of your seat, and Powell... is obviously elated to be handling such twisty material. - Shirley Li, The Atlantic
This genial comedy/noir is a genuine crowdpleaser – funny, sexy, clever and confident in building a low-key humour which hits the target over and over again. - Fionnuala Halligan, Screen International
It’s a genuinely riotous time at the cinema and concrete proof Powell is perhaps our brightest hope when it comes to keeping the notion of the movie star alive. - Hannah Strong, Little White Lies
Hit Man is hot and hilarious, a winning combination amplified by a story that gets knottier at every turn. - Nick Schager, The Daily Beast
Powell’s ability to power through some dull material on charm alone only reaffirms the credibility of his stardom, and the film’s general lack of ambition keeps things from going awry whenever a joke doesn’t land. Aim small, miss small. B- - David Ehrlich, indieWire
I’s just fun to watch good old-fashioned comedy in which love, danger, and happy endings are all part of a damn fine evening at the movies. - Alissa Wilkinson, Vox
With Richard Linklater’s Hitman, the charismatic Glen Powell has been offered a plum opportunity to shape his image into something more complicated and often poignant. 3/4 - Zach Lewis, Slant Magazine
[A] light-and-lively comedy. - Jordan Hoffman, The Messenger
Comfortably Linklater’s best movie since Boyhood, Hit Man stands alongside School of Rock for big laughs and good vibes – albeit with a darker streak that slowly kicks in. 4/5 - Philip De Semlyen, Time Out
Powell and Linklater would have done better to take Johnson’s story as a launching point and then spun off into their far more complicated version of his life without literally tethering the movie to a real person. - Alonso Duralde, The Film Verdict
Linklater has long had a gift with playful humor, and he nails the tone here without turning “Hit Man” into the slapstick it could have become. - Brian Tallerico, RogerEbert.com
A comedy/thriller that’s in equal parts charming, nerve-wracking, and ethically challenging. - Glenn Kenny, RogerEbert.com
Every interesting aspect of the true story and the imagined story are smoothed out. - Drew Gregory, Autostraddle
The smoldering, wily, wild-but-true Hit Man returns Linklater to his loquacious take on romance, with a man using his gift of gab to shrug off himself. - Charles Bramesco, Inside Hook
A witty, relaxed, and cheerfully fictionalized comedy-caper-romance; in the bargain there’s some light philosophical meditations on the impermanence of personality. 4/4 - Ty Burr, Ty Burr's Watch List
It’s as if Linklater is playing posthumous wingman for his subject, giving him the rom-com-slick Hollywood ending he never got in life. - Keith Uhlich, (All (Parentheses))
SYNOPSIS:
Oscar-nominated director Richard Linklater’s sunlit neo-noir stars Glen Powell as strait-laced professor Gary Johnson, who moonlights as a fake hit man for the New Orleans Police Department. Preternaturally gifted at inhabiting different guises and personalities to catch hapless people hoping to bump off their enemies, Gary descends into morally dubious territory when he finds himself attracted to one of those potential criminals, a beautiful young woman named Madison (Adria Arjona). As Madison falls for one of Gary’s hit man personas — the mysteriously sexy Ron — their steamy affair sets off a chain reaction of play acting, deception, and escalating stakes. Co-written by Linklater and Powell and inspired by an unbelievable true story, Hit Man is a cleverly existential comedy about identity.

2024.05.21 12:54 blackHatAlice Being confident/standing out in front of narcissists

So I am an introverted anxious person. I grew up with a narcissistic and toxic family, so I know a narcissist when I see one.
For the past couple of months I was struggling with a crappy job, terrible management, a horrible dictator of a boss and gossipy colleagues. I ended up leaving because it was just too much to continue working there. And I realised that having to endure these types of people has killed my desire to be seen, heard, or contribute with my ideas. I honestly withdraw from a conversation completely because I just can't walk on eggshells anymore, I can't endure their grandiose ramblings anymore, I can't take their narcissistic rage anymore, and I just refuse to be gaslighted ever again.
If everyone seems narcissistic and punishes me for acting or not acting at the same time, if it takes vicioussnes to get ahead (sabotage, blackmail, bribery, nepotism, favoritism) then should I accept averageness? I am very ambicious and want to accomplish more, but how the hell can I compete with these monsters?!
A simple example: I decided to get my superior a coffee. He was running late, he asked if someone could get him some before the coffee shop closes. For no real reason I decided to do it. I wasn't trying to asslick, I don't know if this is even considered one, socially speaking, I just wanted to do a good gesture for once. So I confirmed in our work chat I would get it for him. But another superior decided to do the same, didn't tell me/anyone about it, and acted surprised while sporting a big grin that he managed to give coffee to the boss first. It was like a dog aggressively pissing on the same spot while giving me a death stare. That was his territory! He was the kind of guy to always boast, belittle the contributions of the team and just dunk on juniors.
I decided that I will never even considered doing that kind of gesture ever again. Fuck this! Please tell me how do you endure/survive such viciousness?!

2024.05.21 12:54 Sea_Ad6771 I want your opinions: I think NJPW has too many titles.

One World Championship ok. A new Global aka the new form of the IC Title ok. Junior very good. The Tag and Six Man Titles are nice too, although I've heard those are irrelevant. But now to the rest. Why do you still need the NEVER titles. You have a TV Title now. I don't understand what this is all about. For example, NOAH also only has minimalistic titles
PS:
I approached the topic with the premise of why a King of Pro Wrestling title, but after research I actually find it funny. A friend said more titles = excitement at the events because it's not a normal match but a title that attracts more viewers. But I don't feel the take. I'm losing sight of the prestige
Info: I left out the women's and STRONG titles because I think it's clear that they're a no-brainer in terms of numbers.

2024.05.21 12:53 Metalhead7000 Ummmmmm

Ummmmmm
I'm Southern African, I found this article and laughed my socks off. Apparently BM and African men are upset that divestors are now scaring off their preferences from dating them.
1) Is the horn of Africa are developed region? From the statistics no country in that region even makes it to the top 10 of economically good African countries. Somalia is literally top 3 poorest regions in the world. A failed war torn country, so what are the men doing besides complaining online and promoting Islam?
2) Featurism is stronger in those regions than colorism. We all know that horners hate bantu-looking black people. So seeing these so-called bantu-looking black people cry for these people to date and marry you is pathetic. The only time I see a horner woman married to another African man is if his rich.
3) Black women(wherever they're from) should always prioritize stability and money over looks and culture. If the man can't create a stable home, leave. If the men can't create a stable society, leave. If the men can't create a well developed nation, then leave. And in the process of leaving, always ensure to move in silence.
So even if these horner men aren't bashing their women's looks and demoralizing their culture. What are they doing to uplift their economic situation? What are they doing to advance not only themselves but their countries? What are they doing to give their women the same quality of life that I see other races of women living?
Like I read once on this sub. Words mean nothing. I want to see actions. I want to see men treat all BW well. Furthermore, don't stay in a toxic community because of "black love". In addition, don't put all your eggs in one basket. Always strive to uplift yourself and only your youself! Harsh Truth that these mammies don't want to hear is that BW do better either alone or with a non-black man.

2024.05.21 12:52 Frequent_Listen4429 Neuropsychology test

Hello, I’m a bit at a loss of words right now and in search of advice. I (21 f) started seeing a psychiatrist that specializes in adhd and autism this past summer. Since then, I’ve talked at length with her about my struggles in daily life, daily tasks, relationships throughout my whole life, overstimulation, following social norms etc. At first I was pretty sure I didn’t have autism, adhd maybe but I was more inclined believing I just had depression (which was diagnosed a few years prior). However, throughout these various meetings with this psychiatrist, she explained to me how adhd and autism present in women, and pointed out all the traits I had for both diagnoses. She then diagnosed me with adhd, saying I have many autistic traits but is not sure about that diagnosis as I do not have the possibility to involve my parents in this process. In my country you need to go through a neuropsychology test in order to have a recognized diagnosis which would make me able to ask for adjustments in my studies or future jobs. Well, I went thru the whole process of the 4 hour long exam, which was with other specialists (so not my current psychiatrist). I have a report that says that as I have many traits of adhd (reduced attention span, difficulty staying focused on a same task without starting another task at the same time for example) and autism (poor eye contact, very sensitive to noise, rigid behavior for example) they do not diagnose any of the two. Why? Because they talked to my sister, which knows me rather well but is 1) probably neurodivergent too and 2) not inside my body and mind and she said she didn’t notice anything weird when I was younger. And because they saw my high school reports that say I was “a polite, nice, quiet and dedicated student” (which to me is infuriating bc I was suicidal throughout all of my high school years, struggled to attend classes which is WRITTEN ON THE REPORTS, had to repeat my last year, attend many support classes etc). How do they base their diagnoses of off a QI test, a few school reports and my sister’s idea of me rather than my personal experience and the opinion of a professional that specializes in this subject and that saw me many hours, talked to me at length, did research with me etc etc?? Why didn’t they ask me about my experience in the school system and in my daily routine? How can anyone else know how I feel except for myself?? Also, if I do not have autism it’s ok! It’s just that it’s frustrating bc things don’t add up, and for adhd, I am pretty sure I have it and my psychiatrist agrees. Also I’ve been searching for answers for a good while now and this exam doesn’t give me any to go forward. I guess as long as my psychiatrist diagnoses me it’s ok, but I’ll always have this feeling that maybe it’s not true and I’m only exaggerating bc that’s what this exam said about me (it literally stated that I was exaggerating my symptoms bc what my sister said about me wasn’t the same as what I was saying in the exam).
So yeah. I don’t really know what to do now. I mean, there is nothing to do. But I’m a bit lost and I’m not sure I can say I think I’m autistic then, bc what if I’m not? Same with adhd even though I’m a bit more confident in that diagnosis. It just leaves me in this grey area and I hate not being sure.

2024.05.21 12:51 ExpressionGeneral418 Why do I care now?

I’m lost and confused after a recent breakup.
My ex broke up with me a few weeks ago. We had been dating about a year and a half. I met her on a dating app and it was one of those relationships that developed by doing one date a week for several months. It was a year after I got out of a toxic relationship.
About 3 months into hanging out. she asked if I would be her bf. At first I cringed on the idea, not because it was her, but more so because I wasn’t sure about it. She was a great girl but I wasn’t sold on relationship material. I have crazy high standards and she didn’t fit appearance standard. But I went along with it, I told her I still wanted to be able to approach or work on social skills with other girls even if just plutonicly. Fast forward another several months and the I love you statement came up. I wasn’t entirely sure about how I felt but I again went along with it. I did come around to the whole thing though.
She was a very loving, loyal, committed gf, and did anything for me. She made a lot of money (6 figures). Unfortunately I didn’t really find her incredibly magnetizing. She was cute, but not crazy attractive in my eye. Also, the fact that she was so wholesome, it didn’t allow for much witty banter. Conversations were mostly plutonic, where I’m more of the sarcastic type. She always wanted to pull out the calendar and schedule plans months in advance every week. She did all of these crazy google calendar overlays and I felt like I was always being sucked into things I didn’t want to do. She became more clingy than I had realized when I first met her. She even asked me about 3 months ago, if we could spend not just weekends together, but also Wednesday nights. (We lived just over an hour apart). I suggested it could be every other week (the opposite)…I didn’t like going to her place because of the road noise where she lived and I would really only see her when she would visit me. When apart I was fine going several weeks without seeing each other. Phone calls were enough. I know, all of this sounds really one sided and like I’m an asshole. But I was very loving to her in person and she knows that, hence why it lasted so long.
Unfortunately a lot of things she did turned me off. She was too readily available, always trying to lock up my calendar, talk about marriage and kids in the next 3-5 years and I felt trapped. We had great sex but it wasn’t crazy passionate, neither was our kissing. When alone, and was feeling aroused, I generally didn’t think of my ex. I constantly found myself checking out other girls places I went (but never talked to them). I felt like wow I wish that was the kind of girl I was with. Although my ex was cute, and attractive to most, I didn’t really feel “proud” to have her with me when I went out…I debated for months on what to do.
In the end she left me, and I shouldn’t really be surprised. But now I’m wishing I had her. Maybe not for the right reasons though? I just think where would I find a girl that loyal, dedicated, and make that kind of money without being money hungry.
I’m trying to figure out why if I wanted to end things myself how come all of a sudden I want her back? Is it just the void of not having someone loyal who’s there for me? The fear of not meeting someone as smart? She’s already talking to other guys and I’m just a wreck and need some advice. I can’t go an hour without thinking of her. I think I need to rewire the way I am thinking. I can’t stop thinking that maybe I made a mistake and should have put in more effort, but I feel like if I truly loved/had that spark for her I would have tried more all along
Do you think this was a good thing this happened?

2024.05.21 12:50 DeusExPersona Casual modes need to be on a weekly rotation

I'm seeing a couple of things on the sub and in game that I would like to expand on a little bit, and see what you guys think about them.
There's been a couple of posts in here asking for Terminal Attack to be a permanent mode in the casual section of the game. At the same time, Powershift's been a permanent more for about 3 months now, Bank It and Quick Cash have been here since release.
I would like to argue that this has been hurting the game more than helping, by quite a bit of a margin.
To start off, I would like to ask you: What thefinals is more known for? Most of you will probably answer with "whining" and/or "nerf/buff complaints". A small minority will probably think of "Circuit challenge complaints".
I think all of the above are issues which stem from he same place: the player base is too fractured.
The main reason behind this I think, is that we have way too many casual modes which are radically different from each other for a very extended amount of time. Let me make a few examples:
I could go on with the examples but you get the point. The problem for this fracture IMO is the very high variety of game modes which are very, very different from one another.
The Finals is primarily a Cashout game, hence the ranked mode also being a tournament Cashout mode. It would make the community much less tribalistic and balancing much easier if the casual modes (Quick Cash, Powershift, Bank It) were on rotation weekly, to lessen the impact they have on the game's balance and player frustration. It would also slowly make players integrate themselves into the main game mode so that they can get that "permanent mode" feeling when they feel like they need it.
So for example: Week 1 you can play Powershift, Week 2 Quick Cash, Week 3 Bank It and repeat.
I know people love these modes and some of you probably play them the whole time, but I would like your opinions on this. Do you think emphasizing the main game mode can help the game's and community's long term health?

Hello, if someone wants to buy a jersey on topleaguejersey. I have a coupon code with which you can get a $3 discount. The coupon code is: YU11 The quality of the jerseys is really very good even if the jerseys are a bit more expensive than, for example, on beone , but in my opinion the quality is even better on topleaguejersey.

2024.05.21 12:48 throwraFrequentRow2 Why would you have a spark, highly compatible, but a man doesn’t ‘like’ you?

Ok, so you meet a guy and you vibe! You soon establish that you’re compatible intellectually, similar goals, great chemistry. You’re going on dates and there is a spark, he even agrees, but he always keeps dates super short and always has plans with other friends he has to leave for.
And then he spaces dates apart like once every 3 weeks but when he does see you, he’s affectionate, forehead kisses, speaks of your good connection. And then the next week he says he doesn’t feel romantic. I don’t understand

2024.05.21 12:46 Mission_Ladder_2765 Confused about the future of my relationship

I'm 24M and she's 28F. We are both native Chinese, and I have been studying in the US for 5 years. We met last year in China when I took the summer break (she hasn't been abroad before) and soon fell in love. So we are in LDR now (I've flown back to see her for two months, together we've physically been together for 5 months, and separate for 5 months). She indeed helped me through the most difficult period of my life, as I had depression at the time and was on medication. I think I got out of the condition under her support and love. However, deep in my heart, I always doubt if this relationship will last forever, as I think I'm still exploring my own life, and quite unsure of what my future looks like. She has suggested that she wants to marry me. I really want to tell her about my internal struggles and the idea of marriage actually sounds intimidating to me, but I can't because I don't want to hurt her, because I know once I tell her I don't want marriage she will wonder if I'm not serious on this relationship.
I know many of you may think it's the best to confess my thoughts to her and break up. I've thought about this, but I can't do so, for two reasons: 1. she has a really hurtful dating history, as her two ex-boyfriends hurt her so much, treating her so bad, that she has this inferiority complex that seems ingrained in her heart. She really sees me as a fateful destination of her life, as we have had a lot of good times together. I can't leave her like this, I can't deepen her existing trauma by betraying her. 2. She is from a rather economic-restrained family. She needs to support her parents, one of them suffering from a chronic illness. She works overtime everyday, sometimes plus weekends. If she hasn't met me, her parents would help find her a "ok" husband, which she despises. My point is: I can picture her life after I leave her, which is painstaking, living with a husband she doesn't necessarily love and doesn't love her (she's not physically attractive to most people I guess, but I'm fond of her), and she will spend rest of her life in China supporting her parents. I know this may appear to be my arrogant speculations, but I want to display the harsh reality here. If we continue, I can take her here to the US, I can help support her family by my salary. She has saved me from a dark place, I should do these things for her. It's immoral for me to leave her.
However, I can't keep myself from the thought of pursuing my own life, to me it's an evil thought. I know this sounds so contradictory, so hypocritic, but this is my true state right now.
Really hope for some true advice...what should I do, and what are the best ways to think about this?
Plus: I plan to work here in US after graduate. We have discussed about living abroad in the future, which she kind of objected but I think if we have determination to be together in the future it's not big issue.
TL;DR: I'm unsure about continuing the relationship, also some morality burdens are involved here. We are both Chinese and I'm studying in the US.

2024.05.21 12:46 gem_scheltema Japanese B01 model from eBay, $104.50

Japanese B01 model from eBay, $104.50
My new obsession as a complete amateur is to try and fix YLOD fat PS3s.
I had one from my older brother, a G model, that had YLOD back in the day that I then partially parted out for a bit of money, as a kid would do (after the hairdryer trick did not bring it back to life haha). Checking with the syscon revealed 3034 error so it's definitely dead, but I practiced delidding the RSX - with a first time success. Nice!
I also bought two K models from eBay for about $60 AUD, read their syscons and as hoped, NEC-tokin errors! - if anyone has any up to date solid knowledge on what caps to buy to put on (especially for Australia) I'm happy to listen. I've already got them off of one board on the non-CPU/GPU side. Took a little while but nothing terrible.
Last week I bought, as the title says, a Japanese B model. It was cheap, with free expedited shipping, and it was about $150 AUD. Plus, the black trim is pretty good looking imo. If anything it's a nice display piece (I've spent a hell of a lot more on a 20th anniversary PS4...). The seller kindly asked to make sure if it was okay that it didn't turn on, I said yes obviously.
It arrives today, I'm raring to go, so I tear it down. As I'm going I'm thinking to myself, "this is crazy clean, and the thermal pads look new and fresh...did someone maintain this unit meticulously? It seems like new." It's really hard to get the mobo away from the heatsink. Well, that thermal paste on the CELL and RSX is not old and crusty. Lo and behold it's the original white stuff. I know this is special, so I'm pleased, but not overly hopeful there's nothing wrong with it.
Well, I must have misinterpreted the listing, because as I was trying to do a syscon diagnosis, there was absolutely no power. I thought it was a YLOD! Nope, using the G model power supply I still had, it gave the red light. So they really meant it just did not turn on? Huh. To my surprise it did not YLOD when I turned it on...so I switched it off quickly and ran the errlog. A few errors, NEC-tokin related. That's lucky, hey?
Next, I ran the becount.
I scoffed and laughed in disbelief. This thing is 3 hours off brand new? How? I'm absolutely gobsmacked 😂

2024.05.21 12:46 Yurii_S_Kh Venerable Arsenius the Great

Venerable Arsenius the Great

Saint Arsenius the Great was born in the year 354 at Rome into a pious Christian family, which provided him a fine education and upbringing. He studied rhetoric and philosophy, and mastered the Latin and Greek languages. Saint Arsenius gave up philosophy and the vanity of worldly life, seeking instead the true wisdom praised by Saint James “pure, peaceable, gentle, and easy to be entreated, full of mercy and good fruits” (Jas. 3:17). He entered the ranks of the clergy as a deacon in one of the Roman churches, dedicating himself to the service of God.
The emperor Theodosius (379-395), who ruled the eastern half of the Roman Empire, heard about his erudition and piety, and he wished to entrust Arsenius with the education of his sons Arcadius and Honorius. Arsenius, however, protested that he had given up secular studies in order to serve God. Against his will, but in obedience to the will of Pope Damasus (December 11), Saint Arsenius agreed to teach the imperial children, hoping to teach them Christian piety as well.
When he arrived at Constantinople, Arsenius was received with great honor by the emperor Theodosius, who charged him to educate his sons not only in wisdom, but also in piety, guarding them from the temptations of youth. “Forget that they are the emperor’s sons,” said Theodosius, “for I want them to submit to you in all things, as to their father and teacher.”
With fervor the saint devoted himself to the education of the youths, but the high esteem in which he was held troubled his spirit, which yearned for the quietude of monastic life. Saint Arsenius entreated the Lord to show him the way to salvation. The Lord heard his prayer and one time he heard a voice telling him, “Arsenius, flee from men, and you shall be saved.” And then, removing his rich clothing and replacing it with old and tattered garments, he secretly left the palace, boarded a ship for Alexandria, and he made his way to Sketis, a monastery in the midst of the desert.
Arriving at the church, he asked the priests to accept him into the monastic brotherhood, calling himself a wretched wanderer, though his very manner betrayed him as a cultivated man. The brethren led him to Abba John the Dwarf (November 9), famed for his holiness of life. He, wishing to test the newcomer’s humility, did not seat Arsenius with the monks for the trapeza meal. He threw him a piece of dry bread saying, “Eat if you wish.” Saint Arsenius got down on his hands and knees, and picked up the bread with his mouth. Then he crawled off into a corner and ate it. Seeing this, Elder John said, “He will be a great ascetic!” Then accepting Arsenius with love, he tonsured him into monasticism.
Saint Arsenius zealously passed through his obediences and soon he surpassed many of the desert Fathers in asceticism. The saint again heard the Voice while he was praying, “Arsenius, hide from people and dwell in silence, this is the root of virtue.” From that moment Saint Arsenius settled in a solitary cell deep in the desert.
Having taken on the struggle of silence he seldom left his seclusion. He came to church only on Sundays and Feast days, observing complete silence and conversing with no one. When Abba Moses asked him why he hid himself from people, Saint Arsenius replied, “God knows that I love you, but I cannot remain with God and with men at the same time. The Heavenly Powers all have one will and praise God together. On earth, however, there are many human wills, and each man has his own thoughts. I cannot leave God in order to live with people.”
Though absorbed in constant prayer, the saint did not refuse visiting monks with his counsel and guidance, giving short, but perceptive answers to their questions. Once, a monk from Sketis saw the great Elder through a window standing at prayer, surrounded by a flame.
The handicraft of Saint Arsenius was to weave baskets, for which he used the fronds of date palms soaked in water. For a whole year Saint Arsenius did not change the water in the container, but merely added a little water to it from time to time. This caused his cell to be permeated with a foul stench. When asked why he did this, the saint replied that it was fitting for him to humble himself in this way, because in the world he had used incense and fragrant oils. He prayed that after death he would not experience the stench of hell.
The fame of the great ascetic spread far, and many wanted to see him, and they disturbed his tranquility. As a result, the saint was forced to move around from place to place. But those thirsting to receive his guidance and blessing still found him.
Saint Arsenius taught that many take upon themselves great deeds of repentance, fasting, and vigil, but it is rare for someone to guard his soul from pride, greed, jealousy, hatred of one’s brother, remembrance of wrongs, and judgment. In this they resemble graves which are decorated outwardly, but filled with stinking bones.
A certain monk once asked Saint Arsenius what he should do when he read the Holy Scriptures and did not comprehend their meaning. The Elder answered, “My child, you must study and learn the Holy Scriptures constantly, even if you do not understand their power... For when we have the words of the Holy Scriptures on our lips, the demons hear them and are terrified. Then they flee from us, unable to bear the words of the Holy Spirit Who speaks through His apostles and prophets.”
The monks heard how the saint often urged himself on in his efforts with the words, “Rouse yourself, Arsenius, work! Do not remain idle! You have not come here to rest, but to labor.” He also said, “I have often regretted the words I have spoken, but I have never regretted my silence.”
The great ascetic and keeper of silence was given the gift of tears with which his eyes were constantly filled. He spent fifty-five years at monastic labors and struggles. He spent forty years at Sketis, and ten years on the mountain of Troe near Memphis. Then he spent three years at Canopus, and two more years at Troe, where he fell asleep in the Lord.
Our holy, God-bearing Father Arsenius reposed when he was nearly one hundred years old, in the year 449 or 450.
His only disciples seem to have been Alexander, Zoilos, and Daniel (June 7).

Troparion — Tone 8

By a flood of tears you made the desert fertile, / And your longing for God brought forth fruits in abundance. / By the radiance of miracles you illumined the whole universe. / O our holy Father Arsenius, pray to Christ our God to save our souls!

Kontakion — Tone 2

Arising from Rome, as a sun, you reached the royal city, / Enlightening it, O most blessed one, by your words and deeds. / You drove out the darkness of unreasoning. / Therefore we honor you, Arsenius, the glory of the Fathers!

2024.05.21 12:45 RisingSunMan How common are men like me?

In a Dating post, I explained that as a man, I (26M) don't have the Hero Instinct; a need and desire to be needed, a lack of need to feel strong and like a provideprotecter. I'm a man who doesn't need--or even WANT, in my case--to feel like "the man" in a relationship. And I kinda want to know how common men like me is, because I don't think this is normal at all.
For men who do have the Hero Instinct, a damsel in distress is great. They make these men feel strong, reliable. Like a handyman, a protector, a provider, a hero. But for me, there's few things worse. To me, the more competent and less vulnerable a woman is--particularly physically--the more attractive she is to me.
What attracts me physically is brute strength and athleticism. And to a smaller extent, I find tallness (being 5'7 or taller) more attractive than being short; after all, it's easier to reach stuff when you're tall. Plus, you're more likely to be seen as intimidating and a leader. As for mental and emotional qualities, a woman who either lacks fear (bravery) or acts despite having fear (courage) is very attractive to me.
At my job, a mouse was inside the office of a parking garage I work in sometimes, and three of my female co-workers were afraid of it. A woman who isn't my co-worker, but works in one of the rooms screamed when she saw it and ran back out where I was, and I accompanied her back in so she could get her supplies and work in another area. I knew that what I did was good, but I got no satisfaction out of it. The fact that I stepped up when my female co-workers were afraid meant nothing to me. Didn't make that office worker more endearing to me either.
Plus, growing up, when my mom or my grandmother needed help reaching something, they'd say, "I need your height!", and I'd help them, but...it didn't make me more secure about my height. And when I moved something heavy, my grandmother would sometimes call me her "strong guy", which was almost enough to make me throw up in my mouth. I HATED hearing that. And nowadays, I help my grandaunt with her DIY projects around the house, and my grandma often comments that I'm doing something manly...which--you guessed it--doesn't encourage or motivate me at all.
By contrast, I have glanced at the female cops at my job a few times; particularly one with an arm that was all tatted up. She looked super bad*ss, and I was kind of crushing a little bit. I'm genuinely curious. How common are men like me, who don't have the "Hero Instinct", and find strength and competence more attractive in a woman? I think I'm very rare as a man.

2024.05.21 12:45 velvettblood Developing SWU BAM, ruleset based on Yu-Gi-Oh BAM, I need feedback

So recently I was thinking about yugioh BAM a game that unfortunately can't be played anymore and because SWU is the only game I am playing I was thinking about developing a BAM version of it just for fun.
Before I start I want to be sure that the ruleset I made is good so I want a feedback:
So what do you think? is this going to work?
Obviously some of the cards need to be rewritten and the values of the attack and hp is going to be extremely tone down.
The biggest challenge is going to write new abilities for the leaders because leaders such as Leia or the grand inquisitor are not going to work in this game.
