2024.05.21 12:19 xs4all4me Where in Melbourne are his HAVAL wheels?
Any guesses? submitted by xs4all4me to melbourne [link] [comments] Jokes aside, started my afternoon shift today, a fellow colleague asked if I have seen the car with no wheels? Thought they were taking the piss, so I had to go have a look, and this is what I saw. Poor guy, I think he does the late late night shift from 6pm to 6am. My shift finished at 2am, so by that time, my work colleagues who uses the rear entry to get to the carpark saw this and alerted the department in that area. At work we have the main big car park at front where everyone parks, then there is the side card park which is a narrow lane way street, this is used by workers who's department is closer to this side. Opposite side are the rear of other factories, they mainly use this lane way for delivery and pickups during the day. But at night, it's a bit sketchy, not very good lighting and dark in some parts. There were CCTV's around but I heard, our CCTV didn't capture the actual incident by the CCTV on the opposite side did. Be safe, hug your wheels at night before bed as there is a slight chance, you will not see them again. This happened in the Northern Suburbs. https://preview.redd.it/3blk44zv9r1d1.jpg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5587705762b9fd6b7ede61a575b204a7a947ca89 https://preview.redd.it/0tyboewv9r1d1.jpg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=74256d3444541d1cee059e55e8374f0e81455e1c |

2024.05.21 10:50 Yurii_S_Kh “May we be that kind of crazy”. Conversation with Protopresbyter Joseph Dzagoev about Orthodoxy on the Kolyma peninsula
Protopresbyter Joseph Dzagoev, a priest in the Protection monastery in Magadan, tells about the spiritual life in his city. He talks about well-worn stereotypes, “ordinary” Christian miracles, and how we should never get tired of trusting the Lord. submitted by Yurii_S_Kh to SophiaWisdomOfGod [link] [comments] Trinity Cathedral in Magadan The Russian antimension Before 1989, our city was lacking not only a monastery; we didn’t have a single church. Before the Bolshevik persecutions against religion, there were churches, chapels and veneration crosses at various neighboring villages, on the coast, and in Cossack settlements. It wasn’t till the very end of the twentieth century when the persecution of the Christian faith finally officially stopped, and with the blessing of the Bishop of Khabarovsk, the very first Orthodox community was formed here. The first services were held in a private residence. This is where the Protection Monastery was later founded. Although it’s true that our city never even had a chance to have a church, because it started its life, so to speak, as a local GULAG camp in the early 1930s. That’s why any church was out of the question. We aren’t talking about the times of the Russian Empire, when churches were everywhere, and everyone, including exiles, convicts and other prisoners, always had the opportunity to attend a church service. But on the other hand, even if we didn’t have a physical church, it doesn’t mean that we had no Christians here. We have every reason to call both Solovki and Magadan and their surrounding territories an enormous Russian antimension spread under the open sky. How many new martyrs and confessors suffered here in very recent times! One of the most revered local saints is the Venerable Confessor Andronik (Lukash), one of the elders of Glinsk Hermitage, whose relics rest in our Holy Trinity Cathedral. But there are many more saints like him—both those we know, and those known only to God. So, the place you stand is holy ground. I think we should know more about the holiness of this land. Well-worn stereotypes —Fr. Joseph, how can we understand the salvific value of sufferings? How do we benefit from them if viewed from the Christian perspective? After all, not everyone who suffered here at Kolyma suffered for Christ’s sake. If we read the works of Varlam Shalamov1—it gives you jitters and you even can grow despondent. —I have to say right away that neither I, nor many of the inhabitants of our region, are fans of Varlam Tikhonovich's literary work. You can’t find a glimpse of light in his writing. Besides, the locals say that not everything that he wrote is truthful. But let's leave Shalamov in peace, God rest his soul. As for the meaning and nature of suffering, in my opinion, there were prisoners (and there are still some—I have been conducting prison pastoral care since 1998 in our region, so I can talk to the prisoners) who truly suffered for the truth, for Christ’s sake, and for their loyalty to Him. But there were also some (moreover, many) who endured the hardship of imprisonment because, as many of them admit, they have been beneficial to them. They redeem from “other” sins for which they probably haven’t been “officially” convicted. These people tell me: “It’s better that I suffer here and now instead of later, in the afterlife.” I think this speaks of the humility cultivated in them. I used to meet real Christians behind bars, so we shouldn’t suppose that Kolyma is only for hardened thugs. But cultivating suffering—no, I will not do that. Let’s remember the words of the Apostle Peter: But let none of you suffer as a murderer, or as a thief, or as an evildoer, or as a busybody in other men's matters (1 Peter 4:15). But overall I, and the overwhelming majority of residents of Kolyma region, have already gotten quite tired of this reference, the stereotype regarding our land—that Magadan is all about the prisons, camps, tough guys in padded jackets with an inmate number, barbed wire, and so forth. It still works somehow as a gimmick for tourists, but our land has so much more and it can surprise in a good way by bring joy to someone “from the mainland.” Actually, have you noticed that we even say, “from the mainland”, despite the fact that Magadan is actually also a mainland city, while Yakutsk is only 2000 kilometers away from us? —Aha, right, “just” a mere couple of thousand kilometers—no big deal! —But it is so beautiful, isn’t it? The embankment —That's true. The sea knolls, the sea, your сhurches, the embankment, the central streets and museums—it's a pleasure to walk around! —So, we don't live in the dreary past, nor do we relish the allure of prison life—we have other things to do and something and someone to pray about. We have much to do, and that’s good. Because you can’t, after all, rush around the country “seeking greener pastures”. It is better to get comfortable in your own clean, spacious, well stocked and hospitable home. But you’ll obtain this home only when you, and not some “fairy-tale do-gooder,” take care of it yourself. Besides, that “fairy-tale do-gooder” actually does offer support; we receive sizable support from the federal budget. And no, it’s not our thing to sit here whining and waiting for better times, unwilling to lift a finger to make those better times come. The fruits of a recent sermon and “birth pangs” of the Apostle Paul But let us return to the idea of the Russian antimension spread under the open sky. It seems to me that the whole of Russia can serve as such antimension, since persecutions happened all over Russia. So many churches and monasteries were destroyed! I think, we, the Christians of today, can’t come even close to Holy Russia of that time. In the Protection monastery —And in qualitative terms? —On the one hand, I can dwell on the problems like an old man—where our young generation (including priests) is heading, that they are the victims of the “upbringing” of the 1990s, that the former generations were “warriors, far better than you,”2 “unlike the current crop of youth,” and to some extent I would probably be right. On the other hand, as a modern-day priest, I see something joyful happening before my own eyes—I wouldn’t’ say holy, I should be careful here—but examples that speak of a worthy and often miraculous Christian life. Let’s take our Protection Monastery, for example. As I already said, it was founded around a house of worship with the blessing of Bishop Gabriel of Khabarovsk as far back as 1992. There was a community there already, but they were able to obtain their own building, albeit a small and remote one, only in the 1990s. Vladyka used to visit us here several times a year, and this community grew larger over time. Later the Magadan diocese was formed, so when Vladyka Arkady came here together with the monks, they began to travel all over Kolyma as missionaries, visiting every village and hamlet, baptizing, serving, and having conversations. That’s how the life of the Church has gradually settled here. Much later, our monastery was built, and it currently has four elderly nuns headed by Matushka Nadezhda, the abbess. —It turns out that everyone has different gifts. One person is man of prayer, another is a master craftsman, and yet another one is an excellent organizer. —I think the most difficult thing is to have only just begun the spiritual life—considering those “birth pangs” of the Apostle Paul. But later on, there comes a moment of great joy when you see that your community is growing in Christ. Thanks to Bishop Arkady’s labors, we were able to accomplish very much Above all, he succeeded in changing the attitude of the regional and city authorities towards the Church. And not just of the authorities, but also of our local people. Formerly, believers were called “relics of the past” and “pariahs,” despicable and worthless people with “issues,” who were crazy in the head. Now, largely thanks to missionary work, people have realized that first of all, Christ is risen, and secondly, His Resurrection directly affects each and every one of us. Do you choose to languish in the darkness of eternal complaints and death? Wouldn’t it be better to be joyful and work alongside Christ and His disciples? That’s where our choice is. It is, of course, a serious question—to what extent we sinners are worthy disciples of the Lord. But our failures don’t give us the right to forsake God, right? Judging from my own experience, I know how perplexed people were when we witnessed the faith. I remember how in the 1990s, when I was still working at a mining plant (I am a mine foreman by education), there was a lot of theft. And when someone made me an offer to “steal” at work, I replied that I was a Christian and I would not steal. They stared at me and kept looking at me for a long time as if I were insane. However, at any time, to follow Christ was always seen by the fallen world as a disease—we are not right in the head if we are Christians. God willing, may we be that kind of crazy. Kolyma paradoxes and the miracles of Magadan Protopresbyter Joseph Dzagoev with the patients of residential care facility —The irony is that the site of the present-day Holy Trinity Cathedral in Magadan formerly housed the 1st administrative office of Dalstroy, the very consortium that brought workers, or rather slaves, to the GULAG. Later on, they decided to build the House of Soviets there, a huge one by local standards, around fourteen stories tall. But they never finished it; the structure cracked and it was impossible to commission it. That unfinished construction site has seen it all: drunken brawls, the stench of beer, teenagers committing suicide… It was horrible. But now it is the site of our magnificent Trinity Cathedral. —Wouldn’t it be wonderful if our hearts were also transformed? —That is harder to achieve, of course. Especially now, when the war is going on, and when our boys return after witnessing all that death. What are we to do with them? God willing, some of them will find their way to the church, But what about the rest? After the Great Patriotic War, career military people were sent to work here—straight from active duty in the army, they became the camp guards. They say there was an unheard level of drunkenness here... I don't know what will happen now. We pray that we can overcome the ordeal that befell our military men and their families. Yes, and more about the sick. Our monastery is on good and friendly terms with the staff at the psychoneurological residential care facility. Many patients and their staff come to us, and we also visit them. We hold services, we meet and talk to people, comforting them to the best of our abilities. Here is what I want to say: According to information from the residential facility’s staff, the vast majority of their patients (and it’s something like ninety percent!) are the children of drug addicts and alcoholics. And there are about four hundred people residing there! This is the sad part. Now about the miracles so common for Christians. Have you noticed one young man at the service—a kind and caring one, who is smiling and willing to help everyone? This is our Sasha, and he also resides there. He came a long time ago, when the Protection Monastery had just been founded. Well, he sort of came, but he couldn’t say a word—he could only mumble something unintelligibly. Well, he kept mumbling something while we prayed together with him. All churches and communities have such people, so it’s not surprising. But one day we came to the morning service and saw our Sasha standing in front of the icon of the Mother of God, clearly reciting, “Rejoice O Virgin Mother of God.” Not only was he reciting it, but so eloquently that any pious church reader would be jealous! We stood there in amazement. Once he finished praying, we came closer. “Sasha, dearest, how did you learn to read, how do you know the words?” He answered so calmly but matter-of-factly: “This Auntie taught me!” and pointed to the icon of the Mother of God. We could only stand there in silence and continue praying. And that’s what we do! As for Sasha, he continues to come, almost never missing a service. He also helps around the monastery and assists at our meetings in his residential care facility. https://preview.redd.it/9thrbzfntq1d1.png?width=700&format=png&auto=webp&s=5aad11cd96407fb242d5bfdcc656d009d4e493c9 So, we do have miracles, we can’t do without them. On the one hand, those miracles are truly our great support on our path to God. On the other hand, they give us a wonderful opportunity to pause and think that Christ does not work miracles without reason or purpose—any real miracle has its own meaning, and we always see God's love in it. We also have to work hard, even if we are spiritual invalids. We can still progress towards Heaven. If we ourselves don’t make an effort, of course there won’t be miracles! So I wish for us all to keeping working. And one more thing: If you ever happen to be in Kolyma, you are cordially invited to visit us! Peter Davydov spoke with Protopresbyter Joseph Dzagoev 1 Varlam Shalamov (June 18, 1907–January 17, 1982, was a poet and writer who spent much of the period from 1937 to 1951 imprisoned in forced-labor camps in the Arctic region of Kolyma, due in part to his support of Leon Trotsky and praise of writer Ivan Bunin. Best Online Casino BonusesThere are dozens of real money online casinos in the US, and that means that competition for customers can be fierce. But that’s very good news for you as operators will offer a wide range of casino bonuses and promotions. We’ve gone ahead and listed the most common of these bonuses offered by the best online real money casinos. Welcome BonusesThe vast majority of real money online casinos will offer a welcome bonus to all new users. This will see you earn bonus credit or bonus funds for simply signing up and making a deposit. You can then use the bonus credit to play real money casino games. Just bear in mind that you may need to make a minimum deposit before you can grab the bonus.Deposit BonusesA deposit bonus is when real money casinos will match a deposit by a certain percentage. For example, if you get a 100% deposit match bonus on a $100 deposit, you will receive an additional $100 in bonus credit. This can then be used to play real money casino games, but you will have to meet some wagering requirements before you can cash out your bonus funds. No Deposit BonusesNo deposit bonuses are available at some real money online casinos but not all. These promotions are the best value as they don’t require you to make any deposit using your own cash. This gives you the chance to test drive an online casino to see if it’s what you’re looking for. These bonuses also have wagering requirements you will have to meet before you can withdraw your winnings.Free SpinsFree spin bonuses are exactly what they sound like. They offer you free spins on specific slots titles. The idea here is to promote games from a certain provider or introduce new slots. Like the no deposit bonus, this is a great way to try out a game before using your own cash.Reload BonusesA reload bonus is very similar to a deposit match bonus and quite common at real money online casinos. You make a deposit and the casino will match it by a certain percentage. These promotions are run on a regular basis with some of the best online casinos for real money offering them every week.Bonus Terms and ConditionsBonuses and promotions at real money online casinos in the USA have terms and conditions that can have an impact on the value of the bonus. That’s why you should read those Ts and Cs carefully and know exactly what they mean. Here are a few terms you’ll come across.Wagering Requirements Wagering requirements at real money online casinos can also be referred to as ‘playthrough’ or ‘rollover’. This is listed as a multiple and simply tells you the number of times you need to wager the bonus amount before you can withdraw it as cash. So say you have a bonus wagering requirement of 25x on a bonus amount of $100. This means that you will need to place wagers totaling $2,500 (25 x $10) before you can withdraw the bonus as cash. This is possibly the most important thing to look out for on a promotion because a high wagering requirement on a high-value bonus might be hard to hit. Time Limits / Expiry There are two types of time limits – the time you have to take up the offer and the time you have to use your bonus funds and hit those wagering requirements. The first one is simple enough. Once you sign up at a real money casino, you’ll have anything from a few days up to a month to take up your welcome bonus offer. The second one can be a bit trickier. US online casinos will set a time limit on your offer and you have to use your bonus and hit the wagering requirement before that time is up. If you don’t make it , you could lose any unused bonus credit. Minimum Deposits This is a very basic condition of any real money online casino promo when there is a deposit involved. The minimum deposit, as you may have guessed already, is the least amount of money you can deposit to activate the bonus. Now here’s the thing – a minimum deposit for a promotion may be higher than the regular minimum at a casino. And in some cases, the minimum deposit amount may change if it’s a bonus made up of several smaller bonuses. For example, a deposit match and free spins bonus over two deposits might require a minimum of $20 for the first deposit and $50 for the second deposit to unlock the free spins. Winning Limits Real money online casinos will pretty much give you free money just to get you playing their games. But there’s only so much free money they can hand out. So understandably, they put a limit on how much you can win using your bonus cash. It’s not a condition that you need to worry about too much though. After all, a bonus is free money, right? But just remember that you won’t win any massive progressive jackpots with that bonus cash. Game Eligibility Remember what we said about wagering requirements? Well, not all games contribute towards those requirements. Promotions tend to exclude some games like roulette so check the Ts and Cs. Games that are eligible will contribute towards your requirement at different rates. For example, slots may have a rate of 100% while the rate for table games could be 50%. This means that if you play $100 on the slots then $100 is taken off your wagering requirement. If you play $100 on a table game, then only $50 counts towards the requirement. Restrictions This is a little different to games eligibility because it has nothing to do with your wagering requirement. To put it simply, these are games that you cannot use your bonus funds on. Even the best online casinos may restrict bonus use for games like live dealer games or any games that have large prizes such as progressive jackpots. You may also be restricted from entering contests using your bonus. Best Online Casino GamesOne of the benefits of playing at a top real money online casino in the US is that you get access to hundreds of games as soon as you sign up. With instant play online casinos, you don’t have to download any additional software to start playing. Simply go to the site and you’re all set. And the best online casinos might even offer many of these games in demo mode for you to try out.SlotsSlots are one of the most popular real money online casino games. You can spin the reels to hit winning combinations called paylines, unlock bonus features and win real money. But it’s not just about matching a few symbols, there are often multiple ways to win. Slots with the Megaways mechanic can have thousands of paylines.Real money slots also come in a massive range of themes and styles covering everything from safari themes to ancient Egypt and even rock bands. And don’t be surprised if there are hundreds or even thousands to choose from at the best online casinos. Progressive JackpotsA progressive jackpot is a type of prize that you’ll find in some slot titles. These jackpots grow with each and every wager that is placed on the game. The most popular jackpot slots pool wagers from players all over the world and not just the casino itself. The biggest progressive jackpots at online casinos for real money can sometimes reach millions of dollars. In fact , the largest progressive jackpot win of all time was $23.6 million won by a player in Belgium in 2021. The jackpot was won on the Absolutely Mad variant of Mega Moolah. RouletteOnline roulette brings this ever-popular table game into the world of online casinos. Pick a number or color and place your bet. Then wait to see if the ball lands on your pick. It’s one of the simplest games to pick up but there are actually a few variants that you can choose from. The best online casinos will have American, European, and French roulette variants. Some real money online casinos will even offer multi-wheel roulette where you can bet on two or three wheels at a time. Unsurprisingly, roulette is also hugely popular in live casinos. BlackjackBlackjack is a classic casino card game where you try to beat the dealer by getting as close to 21 as possible. While the game is simple enough with a straight bet on your hand, there are plenty of side bets to bring a little more action to the table. For example, you can bet on the Lucky Ladies – betting that your first two cards total 20.You can play virtual blackjack at your own pace at all of the best online casinos. But if you prefer a more traditional style of play, then you can also try your hand at live dealer blackjack. Video PokerMost video poker casinos will offer a range of poker variants that combine skill of poker with the excitement of slot machines. It’s based on five card draw and you need to match one of several winning hands by changing or keeping the cards you are dealt. Bets are placed at the start of the game. Each variant comes with its own set of rules and payout structures that can vary quite a bit. As you can imagine, you’ll need to have some basic poker skills to master this game. It’s also not a bad idea to follow some video poker strategies to improve your odds of winning. BaccaratBaccarat is a hugely popular game in land-based casinos, but not quite so popular at online casinos for real money. The goal of the game is to have a hand value closest to nine. You have a few baccarat strategies to choose from such as betting on your own hand, the banker’s hand, or a tie.The game is available at most of the best real money casinos online in a virtual format. But it’s the live casinos where you’ll find the real action. Live tables are Live Dealer GamesYou can feel like you’re stepping onto the casino floor when you play at live dealer casinos. These casinos offer live streams of table games with professional dealers. All the games have the exact same rules as those you’d find at land-based casinos and you can even communicate with the dealer via chat.Table games like blackjack, baccarat, and roulette are the most popular games. But in recent times, the gameshow has risen to the top with innovative games like Deal or No Deal and, believe it or not, Monopoly. Best US Online Casino Payment MethodsAny online casino with real money games should have a solid set of payment options to choose from. Below, we’ve listed the most common.Credit CardsCredit cards are widely accepted at the best USA online casinos. They provide a safe, secure, and fast method for deposits, and as most people already have one, they’re super convenient. Withdrawals are a different matter though as very few casinos will payout to a credit card. It’s also worth noting that some banks may decline transactions to real money online casinos for legal reasons. For example, if gambling is restricted in your state, the bank may decline your request. There may also be fees charged when funding your online casino account. Debit CardsAs you may know already, debit cards offer exactly the same convenience, speed, and security as credit cards. They’re also accepted by practically all real money US online casinos. And much like credit cards, many casinos don’t offer debit card withdrawals. One big benefit of debit cards over credit cards is that there are no legal restrictions on the use of debit cards to fund gambling accounts. eWalletsA hugely popular payment method for real money online casinos in the US, eWallets offer fast transactions with great security features. They also provide an additional layer of privacy, as your bank or credit card information isn’t shared with the online casino. However, there may be fees associated with eWallet transactions, and some online casinos may not accept certain eWallets.Popular eWallets include PayPal, Skrill, Neteller, Apple Pay, and Google Pay. Interestingly, the online casino industry is slowly starting to move away from older eWallets like PayPal. Even so, there are still some great casinos that accept PayPal. CryptocurrenciesMany of the top real money online casinos in the US now accept major cryptocurrencies for both deposits and withdrawals. These digital currencies offer some of the best security features of any payment method, and yes, that includes credit cards.Cryptocurrency casinos let you deposit and withdraw funds with very low fees and in some cases, no fees at all. Transactions are highly secure as you don’t need to share your banking details and extremely fast. Some crypto withdrawals can be processed in hours or even minutes. The best online casinos will accept offer a variety of crypto options including Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin and more. If you don’t have any crypto, casinos like TG.Casino offer you the chance to buy some using your traditional methods like debit or credit card. ChecksThe best online casinos for real money offer the complete range of payment options and, believe it or not, that includes old-school paper checks. Just pick ‘cash by check’ and the casino will send your winnings by mail. The only drawback here is that it’s quite slow. In fact, withdrawals can take several days or even weeks. It’s all down to how fast your mail provider is and how quickly your bank can clear the check. Still a good option to have though just in case. Wire transfersWire transfers are another tried and trusted method for secure and reliable deposits and withdrawals at US online casinos for real money. This is a simple transfer made directly from your bank account to the casino’s account and vice versa. This type of transfer is very secure as your bank handles the entire process, but it takes time and can be a little on the expensive side. There may also be limits on how much you can transfer to and from your account so check with your bank first. 2024.05.21 06:26 FakeElectionMaker I tried writing a TL where Tomás Garrido Canabal was elected President of Mexico in 1934 and turned it into a totalitarian communist dictatorship.
Garrido Canabal had controlled the state of Tabasco with an iron first since 1919, carrying out a ferocious anticlerical campaign through his Red Shirts militia, and incentivizing social development in various ways. submitted by FakeElectionMaker to AlternateHistory [link] [comments] He sought to improve the quality and variety of agriculture, and gave women the right to vote, generalized public education, and outlawed alcohol and tombstones, playing an important role in suppressing the Cristero revolt, due to his hatred of religion. In 1934, "Maximum Chief of the Mexican Revolution" Plutarco Elias Calles, who had controlled the country through a series of puppet presidents since 1929, chose Garrido Canabal as his sucessor due to his loyalty to Calles and hope he would continue his anticlerical policies. Garrido Canabal soon met Calles at the Chapultepec Castle, and agreed to run for president, promising to carry out the Mexican Revolution's ideals "to their utmost degree". Garrido Canabal, a Bolshevik, Marxist and Leninist (albeit not a self-proclaimed Marxist-Leninist), sought the endorsement of the Revolutionary Confederation of Independent Parties, Socialist Parties of the Left, and the Mexican Communist Party (PCM), all of whom formed the United Front of the Mexican Revolution (FURM), which ruled Mexico for decades afterwards as a socialism one-party state. The Red Shirts violently attacked political opponents and religious believers during the election campaign, killing, torturing and humiliating thousands of people across Mexico, behaving like a fascist militia in spite of their communist views. With all political parties united behind Garrido Canabal, he was elected with 100% of the vote, and took office on 1 December 1934, with a cabinet mostly chosen by Calles. Garrido Canabal ruled Mexico until his death in 1958, turning it into an industrial economy, albeit with a major cost to its people and civil and religious liberties. He is a controversial figure in present-day Mexico. After taking power in 1934, Tomás Garrido Canabal transformed the Red Shirts into Mexico's secret police, perhaps modeled after the Blackshirts and SA. They were also to serve as a reserve militia during wartime. In 1937, the United States declared war on and invaded Mexico in order to overthrow its communist regime before it could spread to the rest of Latin America, and Red Shirt divisions played a role in the Mexican resistance, which eventually led to an American withdrawal in 1940, followed by its recognition of Garrido's government in exchange for a nonaggression pact with the United States. During the mid-1930s and early 1940s, the Red Shirts violently targeted religion across Mexico, killing priests and lay clergy, raping nuns, staging plays mocking religion, destroying religious icons and dumping them into lakes and rivers, and overseeing the implementation of Rationalist education, a model which denied the soul and human spirituality existed, and remained in effect until the fall of the Communist regime. By 1950, religious worship had all but disappeared from Mexico, and all citizens were counted as atheists for statistical purposes. Despite its ideological iconoclasm, historical monuments were left relatively undamaged by the Red Shirts; to Garrido's regime, like its predecessors, the Aztec empire was a key point of reference. After the invasion failed, Garridist policies targeting religion and industrializing Mexico with oil funding continued unabated, and although religious persecution was toned down after WWII, there was no change to the regime's basic character. The Red Shirt secret police chief, who ruthlessly crushed any opposition to Garrido Canabal's policies, was the second most powerful man in Mexico and administered large parts of the Mexican state until Garrido Canabal purged him in 1956. Women were barred from Red Shirt positions above the state level, as the communist regime's leadership was heavily masculine and militarist, developing a powerful military-industrial complex and, in 1960, the nuclear bomb. After Garrido Canabal died in 1958, his sucessor, a Khrushchevite Marxist-Leninist without fascist influence, disbanded the Red Shirts and replaced them with a Mexican version of the KGB. Calles expected Garrido Canabal to be his puppet, but the new president, a totalitarian puritan in spite of his violent atheism, eventually purged the Callistas, closed their brothels and casinos, and replaced them with loyal Garridistas. The brothels were turned into hospitals and the casinos into schools, while the Red Shirts sentenced prostitutes into "redemption through labour" in state-owned factories and systematically executed pimps. In 1937, Garrido Canabal introduced alcohol prohibition into Mexico, four years after its repeal in the US, but revoked it in 1942 due to the same negative outcomes happening down south. In 1936, PEMEX was founded as a state-owned company with a monopoly on the production, refinement and distribution of oil, with the property of foreign oil companies being expropriated without compensation. This led to substantial tensions between Mexico and the US, and Garrido Canabal stationed two infantry corps near the northern border to defend the country against an American invasion. He also began a military buildup, purchasing weapons from the Soviet Union, Denmark and Czechoslovakia and seeking to develop a national armaments industry. The ferocious religious persecution previously seen in Tabasco extended to all of Mexico. The Red Shirts carried out large-scale violence against priests, lay clergy and landowners, who faced torture, murder and humiliation for their beliefs and social class. One of the President's first acts after coming to power was introducing Rationalist education to all Mexican schools, massively broadening public education, and abolishing private education. At the same time, Garrido Canabal began a cult of personality; his ideological writings were published on a large-scale, the government wrote songs and plays about him, and his portraits shaped public buildings and were carried by the Red Shirts in military parades. In 1936, Garrido Canabal launched the first of Mexico's Five-Year Plans, taking the Soviet Union's Five-Year Plans as a model and focusing on education, healthcare, electricity, transportation and alimentation; however, during the American invasion, the plan's funding was redirected to the military. After the United States withdrawal, industrialisation continued as Mexico supplied oil to the Allies. The main reason for the war was that the United States did not want a socialist state in their backyard, and they had supported anti-communist resistance groups before sending an ultimatum. The invasion force marching from California was commanded by George S. Patton, and the one from Texas by Douglas MacArthur, both of whom were staunch anti-communists, and the landing in Mérida was under the command of Roy S. Geiger. After Garrido took office, Mexico bought weapons and ammunition from the Soviet Union, Czechoslovakia, Sweden, Netherlands and Denmark, including 6 T-26 and 11 AH-IV tanks, 22 Poliparkov I-16 fighter planes, 200,000 vz.24 rifles, and 15,000 Madsen machine guns, meaning that the M1 Combat Cars deployed by the US Army were outgunned in battles fought on the desert. Minister of War Lázaro Cárdenas played an important role in beginning the mechanization of the Mexican Army, a process finished by 1960. The furthest south in Mexico the two main invasion forces advanced was Ciudad Victoria in the state of Tamaulipas, although much of coastal Sinaloa also fell to the Americans and their UNS allies. After the war, their insurgency continued until 1953, Nazi Germany having collapsed in 1949 as the Eastern Front froze and they failed to capture the Caucasus' oil fields, carry out Operation Sea Lion, and suppress partisan activity. The National Synarchist Union rose up against the Mexican Socialist Republic and its atheism on 18 July 1937, with 53,000 insurgents being involved in the original revolt. The Mexican General Staff refused to redirect its forces to fight the UNS, resulting in them capturing a large swath of heavily Catholic territory by 1938, although their territorial gains were rolled back beginning in October of that year, and the burden of defeating the Communists increasingly fell on the US. As Mexico's situation improved, it increasingly obtained support from the Comintern. Artists such as Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo made works depicting the Mexican resistance, and a group of international volunteers totalling 15,000 and hailing from Brazil, Argentina, France, Italy and Germany was formed and fought relatively well. The Soviet Union tried to provide further aid, but was unable to do so due to a naval blockade of Mexican ports; nevertheless, the war led to a rivalry between the United States and the Soviet Union that resulted in America not supporting the Soviets or opening a second front after the Nazi invasion. The Red Shirts, a Mexican paramilitary group founded by Tomás Garrido Canabal in 1931, also took part in the war, just like the Blackshirts had participated in the invasion of Ethiopia and the SS in Germany's military campaigns. The Axis Powers remained neutral in the conflict, as neither side was to their liking. After 1938, Mexico pushed back, launching a successful counteroffensive, Operation Juarez, between May and September of that year, and dealing increasing casualties and territorial losses to the United States over the next year. The Mexican Navy, while small, increasingly attempted to break the blockade, although they were only successful starting in late 1939, when it was increasingly clear the United States had lost. The Mexican victory made Garrido be recognized as the greatest man in the continent, and the second most well known communist in the world, behind Stalin. Mexican influence over Central America and the Caribbean increased remarkably with its defeat of the strongest economy in the world, leading to the overthrow of authoritarian regimes in El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras and their replacement by Mexican satellite states, and the consolidation of Mexico's totalitarian government. |

2024.05.21 05:00 Time-Ingenuity First Harley-21 LRS & shop referral
Bought my first Harley at 33. Gorgeous bike, 3500 miles, very clean and sharp. Previous owner did the bars himself and swapped out OEM signals for LED, and I am seeing a couple codes (signal related, and U0142) from engine light. I am located in the northern WA state, does anyone out this way have a good recommendation for a reputable Harley shop ? Worst case scenario I bring the bike to the shop that did the stage 2 (highly recommended from all the reviews) and drive the 1.5 hours south. submitted by Time-Ingenuity to Harley [link] [comments] |
