Hello, I’m a 21 year old student and I’m currently more than 2000€ in debt. It all started when I turned 18 and discovered sportsbetting I used to bet more than I could afford. Everytime I lost a big amount of money I blocked my account, but I kept finding new sportsbetting websites and kept playing… I also used to email the sites begging them to re-open my account. I’m isolating myself and I have severe self hurting thoughts… I don’t even know why I’m writing this I just needed to let this out. Please don’t make the same mistakes as I did. Don’t gamble it will ruin your life quicker than you can imagine…
I am now banned by my country in every online casino and sportsbetting site. But ofcourse I still found a way to gamble via cryptocasinos… ofcourse another terrible mistake because today I lost over 700€
If anyone has any advice for me on how I can stop gambling please tell me because I won’t live very long if I keep doing this to myself.

Hello everyone! I wanted to create a post here to share some of my ideas on how to improve some aspects of the adventure, which I believe are lacking in detail and attention. I especially want to improve these things because my players are going to spot some of the weaknesses of the adventure early on, otherwise.
Sorry for the long text ahead! BTW - I am a somewhat newbie DM, with this being my first big campaign. Any comments and suggestions are more than welcome!
There are four main topics I want to either add or improve to the story:

Vecna’s Link

I do quite like the idea of having the PCs linked with Vecna, so much so that I instructed my PCs to create their character's backstory with something that could link them to Vecna. Two players already choose to be the descendants of previous heroes that defeated Vecna early in time (in Die, Vecna, Die! for example) while another chooses to be a former cultist.
I want to explore this further by bringing this to the attention of Vecna himself - at the fight at the end of the quest in Neverwinter (before the story goes to Evernight), the breaking of the ritual will be noticed by him (in some telepathic form, or by having him take control of the leader of the cult in this section). He will be intrigued by how so many individuals that had some relation to him are together in the same plot, and use some of his power to eliminate this minor issue, and turning this into something more interesting for him - by attempting to turn the players into his undead servants.
But this attempt will get the attention of another powerful being: the Raven Queen. Since Vecna is playing so very close to her domain, the Shadowfell, and attempting something she detests, which is raising undead, she uses her power to intercept and stop this - while hiding the truth from Vecna (he will believe he has additional undead in his cult, but bear them no mind - every servant of his is irrelevant).
She guides the player’s souls and bodies back to Shadowfell and tells them she feels Vecna becomes stronger, and will try to attempt something horrid (the ritual hasn’t yet started here, but with the rituals happening with the Cult of Vecna, preparations are being set in place). She also says that her role in this will be limited to saving the players' life - she must see to the protection of her domain and take care of the souls and memories of the damned, and hasn’t clarity on what Vecna is up to, nor where. She gives final advise to players that they must be on their guard, for she managed to keep the PCs alive, but not prevent Vecna’s influence on their lives, forever changed by his attempt (hence - the link).
Again - Ideas on how to improve this whole part are welcome: I feel some pieces are missing to make this a better fulfilling story.
Then, I also want to create different effects to Vecna’s link, either something each of my players has or have them roll a d6 to gain new powers/abilities. I will work on this this week also.
During the adventure, I intend to have the players have visions and dreams of past atrocities Vecna has performed, like his actions in Vecna Lives! (with the gruesome death of the Circle of Eight), the hardships of the people of Citadel Cavitus, the horrid ritual he once tried to be reborn into (both from Vecna Reborn) and his power during the battle in Sigil, once he tried to take over the multiverse (as described in Die, Vecna, Die!).
But wouldn't Vecna feel this link with the players, you may ask? Well, not in this case. I want to link to be something trivial for Vecna, something he gives to his undead servants so they can travel across the multiverse, past his influence. I am adding this now, due to the second topic I want to improve:

Why the Wizards Three are kept in Sigil waiting? Or, how the multiverse has a problem - interplanar travels are blocked by Vecna.

I felt that the Wizards Three giving the players a fetch quest of such importance, after being the “answer to their prayers”, and just standing there waiting for their return, felt… A bit weird.
We are talking about three of the greatest magical casters of the universe of DnD, one of them (Mordenkainen - if he was the real one) HAD suffered losses of close friends to Vecna. I find it strange that they would just… wait for the calamity to happen while simple adventurers take the burden of saving the multiverse.
So, a fix to this: Vecna’s ritual is disturbing the ability of any individual to travel between planes - unless they have Vecna’s link.
So the Wish made by the Wizard’s work! It gives them the answer of the only possible party of people that Vecna can’t control, and that can go after him and any other magical artefact to stop his ritual.
But really, is the Rod of Seven Parts the only thing that can stop him? Would Tasha and Alustriel really believe in this plan given by Kasdenkainen?
This question made me think of the next topic…

How to use the artefacts of Vecna and Kas, alongside the Rod

I want the Rod to be the key that unlocks the Sword of Kas. Where exactly, I’m not sure. Maybe the Sword is with Miska, somehow? (Would appreciate ideas here :) )
For me, Kas wants to take over Vecna’s ritual and defeat him once and for all. In his twisted mind, he did this once - with his sword. He NEEDS IT BACK. It’s his sole objective, and the closest the PCs could be to achieving this, the more manic Kas could become and the more broken would his disguise appear.
Tasha would agree to this plan, I believe - she could be the one to mention that theories appeared over the years that the Sword contains part of Vecna’s soul - therefore, could be the only thing to eliminate him once and for all.
She and Alustriel could also hint that some cultists seem very keen on finding other artefacts linked to the Whispered God - the Hand, the Eye and the Book of Vile Darkness. If Vecna acquires his artefacts, he would be much more powerful, and hardly anyone would be a challenge.
This would create a race against time - the Rod would be important as both a magical artifact against Vecna, as well as a key to part of his demise. The PCs would have to find clues about where the other artefacts are - which would become clear with the presence of the Cult in several places they would visit.
I want the Eye and/or the Book to be with Acererak and the hand to be in Avernus.
I don’t know how I would work with my players who want to use the artefacts themselves - Ideas here are also very welcome!
Mentioning Avernus brings me to my last topic…

Mordenkainen and Kas - would the famous wizard here be out there “doing his thing” with the multiverse in danger?

Yeah, I don’t think so. Mordenkainen might have been quite self-centered in some past stories, but he always wanted to find balance in the universe.
So much so that, one of his last appearances in 5e, is during the Curse of Strahd - he becomes a Mad Mage after not being able to stop the vampire lord’s reign. The players in this particular adventure can aid him in restoring his sanity, and he will move on travelling the multiverse and stopping by Avernus, in his Tower of Urm, to study the effects of the Nine Hells in the schools of magic and (again) to ensure the balance of the universe.
I want to try to bring his tower to Avernus as well. I want the players to find him there, bring this confusion between them - Mordenkainen knows he is unable to travel, doesn’t know for sure why, but has seen a bigger activity of Vecna’s cultists even in the Hells and the players believe he is in Sigil, with the other two wizards.
I intend this to be the revelation that Kasdenkainen is a fraud - but he is ready for this.
I want the confrontation back in Sigil to happen with either the defeat or escape of Kas - If the players would still want his sword, they would have to face Miska, or something similar later on - and the rest of the story proceed as suggested.
I still need to read the book in much more detail to add all these things. Will get to it right after here, as I should have already received access.

Popheads recently reached the 2 million subscriber milestone, thanks to your continued participation and support!
We wanted to celebrate, and tried to think of fun things that we could do as a subreddit. A well loved Popheads activity has always been our yearly Top 100 lists, where the community comes together to vote to create a list of our favorite 100 songs of the past year. The list reveal is always fun and one of my personal favorite days of the year, and these lists honestly provide a great representation of our community - a snapshot of our own personal taste, if you will.
Therefore, for this subscriber milestone, we will be doing another Popheads Top 100…but this time, of a throwback year: 2014!!!
2014 was chosen for two reasons: one, the obvious, is that this year is the tenth anniversary of that year. The second is that the annual Popheads Top 100 actually started with the year 2015, so 2014 is the most recent year without “coverage”, so to speak. (If this is a success, we would love to repeat this for other years - 2013, 2012, even earlier!)
Without further ado, the rules for participation are below.

How To Participate

NOTE: Thank you so much to raicicle, whose posts for the annual Popheads Top 100 form the basis of this post!
Like with our normal years, you can also vote in the entirely non-official just-for-fun survey: “What song would you remove a vote from?” You can fill that in optionally here even if you don’t submit an official ballot.

I. How To Send In Your Song Votes

Make a list of your favorite songs released in 2014 (January 1st 2014 - December 31st 2014). This list should have a minimum of 10 songs and a maximum of 25 songs. Please see II. Song Eligibility for more details on what you can and can't submit.

• Do not submit more than 3 songs from any one main artist. Songs where those artists are features do not count towards this 3-song limit on your list.^†
• The list does not have to be ordered/ranked. We are not weighting your votes, just tallying.
• PM your lists to our shared account u/Popheads100Throwback by June 16th, 11:59PM EST (03:59AM GMT).
• Songs should be listed in Artist - Song format with features listed with (feat. ____) after the song title. Try to stylize and capitalize artist and song names as closely to the official listing as you can (for example, Beyoncé should have the accent). The fewer discrepancies, the easier it is for us to sort the list later, so it's very much appreciated.
• You can change your list at any time! Just message us and tell us what you want changed.

And here's a few more important guidelines.

• Your songs do not have to be singles. Of course, if you're trying to get a certain song on the list, singles tend to get more votes than random album tracks.
• Your songs do not have to be 'pop' songs, nor do vocal songs have to be in English. Songs from any genre, and international songs, are all welcome. After all, no “best of 2014” list can be complete without Orange Caramel’s Catellena...
• We are not encouraging tactical or strategic voting, but we are not exactly discouraging it either. Obviously, some songs are more likely to make the list than others, and you should keep that in mind when making your list (whether that means you choose to stick to the big hits, or champion some lesser-known songs instead).

II. Song Eligibility

Your song must have been first officially available between the dates of January 1st 2014 and December 31st 2014. What does 'first officially available' mean? In essence, legally available to stream (Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, etc.) or buy online.

• If a single was released after January 1st 2014, but was first officially available on a parent album before that date, it is not eligible.
• Similarly, a song on an album released after January 1st 2014 is not eligible if it was released as a pre-album single prior to that date. Sadly, this means Azealia Banks’ 212 is therefore ineligible (probably for the best, we all know it would have won…).
• Official remixes are eligible for the list regardless of the original song's release date, provided that the remix was released between the same dates of January 1st 2014 and December 31st 2014.

III. How We Will Make The Final Top 100 List

To make life easier for everyone involved, as was previously mentioned, you do not have to rank your song choices. Every submission counts as one vote, and the list is simply the 100 songs that got the most submissions in order. There are however caveats to this:
An artist will never have more than 3 songs on the list. Even if after the initial vote an artist manages to have 6 songs numerically in the Top 100, only the top 3 of those will be added. This is an editorial decision, based on the fact that it seems more popular to feature as many different artists as possible and showcase the breadth of the sub's music taste rather than dedicate huge chunks of the list to one artist, or one album (sorry 1989 fans!).
It is inevitable that many songs will get the same number of votes. Songs with the same number of votes will appear alphabetically in the list, but we will make the number of votes that every song received public. There may be some weird stuff happening if the list doesn’t end up being exactly 100 songs long, in which case there may be some discretional tie-breaks.

IV. Writeups

The final list will be presented as a Pitchfork-style Top 100 with small writeups to bring some insight and a bit of a story to the song. If you’ve been around for the yearly top songs lists, then you are likely familiar with the process.
We'll be writing the Top 15 to keep it under wraps. The remaining 85 songs will be given to other guest writers! If you feel like you’re a good writer and you’re interested, just mention it when you send in your list (we will assume that you're interested in writing for one of the tracks that you submitted in your votes).
Write-ups will ideally be 4-6 sentences long, though shorter or longer is completely fine**.** Feel free to talk about anything - its chart performance, its composition, your personal experience with the song, etc. There is no perfect writeup - this list is a collection of our thoughts as a community, not an official list from a music publication!
You can also message any of us on our personal Discord or Reddit accounts as listed above (Discord is slightly preferable) if you’re interested – we will try our best to find a writeup for you if possible!
In choosing to do writeups, you inevitably find out whether a song has made it onto the list to write for it, but to keep the surprise as much as possible, we will not tell you the position of the song if we send you a song to write for.

V. The List Reveal

The list will be revealed on Sunday, July 7th, 2024 (exact time TBD). The live reveal will be on Queup https://www.queup.net/join/top-100-of-2014, where all 100 songs will be played in order from #100 to #1; as each song goes out, its write-up will be posted to a post on the subreddit.

I(32F) am a single mother of two kids (6M and 5m F). I am a single mother by choice (my kids are donor conceived).
I am lucky enough to have a good job (French teacher in a private school), and a paid off house (parents’ life insurance and inheritance).
Before I had either of my kids, I made sure to have a year’s living expenses saved, then I would take a sabbatical to recover from birth, as well as bond with my kids. While on sabbatical, I still tutor some kids for some extra income.
My friend (34F), just had a baby 2 months ago. She is the breadwinner in her household, and her husband has been unemployed since he was laid off during COVID.
It was great to be pregnant at the same time, as well as having a friend with a newborn. But it has turned sour.
She has been saying how jealous she is of me being able to take off a whole year from work, how she would have loved to not worry about losing their home, how she doesn’t even have a couple hundred dollars in her savings account, let alone a whole year’s worth of living expenses….
I usually ignore it, or brush it off, because I kind of can understand the stress she is under.
Well, starting about 10 days ago, she started hinting at not being able to afford daycare, and any mention of her husband taking care of their kid is brushed off. Then she started remarking on how much free time I must have, which I deflected by saying -truthfully- that being a single mom to a baby and a small kid left me no free time actually.
Then last night she came out with it, and asked if I could “do her a favor” and watch her kid while she’s at work. I was firm, but polite, when I said that I couldn’t, that I am not capable of watching two kids under 6 months.
She started almost begging me, saying she can’t afford daycare, and if she is not back at work, she will lose her job, and they will end up homeless. I again brought up her husband, and she said that he was not good with kids, and isn’t capable of taking care of her kid.
I kept saying no, she kept pushing, until it escalated to her calling me heartless, and me telling her that it’s not my problem she chose to have a kid with a useless man.
Now she blocked me, I am feeling very guilty about what I said, and feeling like an AH.

I'm by no means criticizing people who don't want to talk to others often / People who really are super busy & People who want to find someone to have unimportant conversations with - I'm aware that not everyone has the same expectations which is why everything you're reading now - is here for a reason :) All I'm suggesting is - I don't want anything temporary and I don't want to be the one always giving more than receiving.Listen people - I used to ignore being..ignored by others..always being just an option to talk to during tough times or moments of boredom.I was too young to realize that I was never important enough for most people that were a part of my life. I don't know who needs to hear this but..No one is too busy to make time for you! People make excuses to avoid others because they prioritize everything and (maybe) everyone..over them. No - Not because I don't understand English - because as you see - I do. Why then? English is simply overrated and people don't appreciate other languages as much as they should. So.. • I don’t respond to messages I don’t find interesting even If they're long - If after receiving and reading your message I don't feel comfortable or think "I wouldn't get along with him/her" I simply do not respond (what I’m suggesting is that I don’t always respond to someone’s first or second message because..sometimes you just know If you’d get along with someone or not- I’d never ignore anyone after days or weeks of daily conversations though) just because I don’t want to do anything forcefully & because I don’t want to lead anyone on. I read all messages but I definitely don't respond to all of them! You can't guarantee others that one day they'll finally be happy + when It comes to social interactions - We're responsible only for ourselves - not others & as you guys know people let us down quite often (sometimes even when there's no reason) so instead of telling people how they should move on, forget everything and be happy or asking them to find a therapist - be there for them! Always be willing to listen to them If you really like them or want to get to know them & don't suggest everyone in a tough situation to find a therapist because even the best therapist won't ever replace a true friend + It's quite normal to be disappointed If people always do something to hurt you. Sharing your hardships with other people in a very similar situation or exactly the same one - is VERY helpful If the other person understands you & wants to start all over by just letting it all out! Feeling emotional support instead of always hearing some "positive quotes" or someone saying "Stop complaining let's talk about something else - Is very important! "Everyone needs a shoulder to cry on. I appreciate sensitive people who always try to understand others. If after hearing a sad story all you want to say is "forget the past and move on" you're not for me. It's important to be a good listener and provide emotional support to others

I know It's possible to meet people with exactly the same expectations as mine but It's just not easy because most people are Interested In temporary and entertaining conversations. I (18F) graduated in 2023. I was not by any means a popular kid, but I was friends with everyone who wasn’t rude to me first, which was a good amount of people.
I was only really close and would hang out with 2 of them, both my best friends, still my best friends to this day. I hung out with a few other people, but they would talk about me behind my back and try to cause issues, so I had to stop hanging out with them. I value my peace over the amount of friends I have.
After highschool, a lot of people who I would have good conversation with and hang out with over lunch hour have since blocked me. They slowly stop talking to me, and then block me off of everything, but they don’t do this to anyone else (like either of my best friends, who don’t talk to anyone else from school equally as much as me) it makes me a little bit sad to see these people just give up on me for seemingly no reason. I have been told by several people that I am a great friend, but no one ever seems to want to STAY my friend.
Is this normal? Is this a me problem? What can I do to stop losing people?

This is a subreddit primarily focused on modern pop music, but for his 120th birthday I want to take a moment to remember one of the most iconic pop acts in American history:

Thomas Wright "Fats" Waller

A jazz pianist, a singer, and a prolific songwriter famous for his ability to jump onstage and "lift up the band," Fats Waller was a regular fixture of the nightlife scene in New York (an important figure of the legendary Harlem Renaissance) and toured his act all around the country in addition to working as a recording artist in the budding record industry.
In a way, he was one of America's first pop stars- a musical prodigy who dropped out of high school, broke into the music industry when he was a teen, sold tons of records, and developed a huge onstage persona and lived a hard partying lifestyle. We've heard that story a million times, but Fats did it first.
An often repeated story about him recounts a shocking incident where gangster Al Capone kidnapped him off the street to force him to play at a birthday party, because everybody wanted to party with Fats Waller! A less repeated story is this one I found in an NPR article that describes him selling eight of his original songs in exchange for eight hamburgers, which he then consumed in a single sitting.
So certainly, a larger than life figure.

The Records

His legacy as a founding figure of America's pop scene extends to a place you might not expect: back in 1926, he signed a recording contract with the Victor Talking Machine Company, one of the earliest manufacturers and distributors of phonographs and records, which would be bought out by the Radio Corporation of America (RCA) in 1929. Then in 1968, the company would be renamed... RCA Records!
RCA is still a powerful record label today and it's partially thanks to Fats, who was a big moneymaker for them in the early days of the record industry when they were literally selling records.
Over the course of his twenty five year career, he copyrighted around five hundred recordings- supposedly, the label would send him into a recording booth with bunches of sheet music bought from Tin Pan Alley composers and he would rearrange them on the spot to give them that special Fats Waller touch!
But he's best remembered for his skills as a pianist and, most importantly, his songwriting skills. I want to take a moment to highlight that because I firmly believe he's one of the greatest songwriters in history- many of his hits have been accepted as standards and are still in rotation with jazz singers today.

The Music

You might have heard his song "Ain't Misbehavin'," which became something of his signature song after he performed it in the landmark film Stormy Weather (1943), and it's the perfect encapsulation of his style. A clever piano line, a catchy melody, a touch of humor, and a lot of heart. It's just timeless music.

There's a tongue-in-cheek sense of humor to the song that's signature Fats- in addition to the lyrics he wrote, he was known to improv and throw new jokes in on the fly during live performances.
We're lucky enough to have footage of him performing "Your Feets Too Big" (another one of his signature numbers where he chastises a woman for, you guessed it, her foot size) and you can just see the charisma oozing off of him as he banters with the band and makes eyes at the camera. All while playing the piano too!
And he was no innocent either, often lacing his songs with innuendo that will shatter any illusions you have about old music being overly conservative. Take, for example, Hattie Noel's recording of "Find Out What They Like," which begins with a disclaimer that the song is "strictly about home cooking" before she sings this:

Go on and give it to him just that way
Give it to him when he wants it / And any time he wants it
And don't you have a single word to say!

He was often performing in nightclubs and bars, which meant he knew how to get the crowd going- "The Joint Is Jumpin'" is the quintessential 1920s party anthem, with the title referring to a secret code phrase that bootleggers would use during the prohibition era to let people know that a party had illegal alcohol. The jaunty music he wrote did a lot to get people on the dance floors as well!
But though he's associated with lively entertainment, there was some grit beneath all that as well. Despite his success, Waller was still a black man living in early 20th century America, and he channelled that into legendary "Black and Blue" (a hit for Louis Armstrong) which is considered by some to be one of the first jazz protest songs:

I'm white inside, but that don't help my case / 'Cause I can't hide what is in my face
How would it end? Ain't got a friend / My only sin is in my skin
What did I do to be so black and blue?

Whatever the occasion, Fats had a song for it.

But like a lot of great artists, Fats had his troubles. He was known for his hard partying lifestyle and frequent money problems that pushed him to be constantly working, and he would tragically pass away in 1943 from pneumonia while on tour.
The man was only 39 years old at the time, but as of today his legacy officially stretches 120 years! So spin a record today for Fats Waller, and get the joint jumpin' in his memory.
If you'd like to hear more of his music, I'd strongly recommend setting aside ninety minutes to watch the Broadway musical Ain't Misbehavin' because it's an incredible piece of theatre that showcases his music spectacularly. Diana Ross & The Supremes did an adorable tribute to him on The Ed Sullivan Show that's worth a watch too.

So I was on Instagram 4 hours ago in the bathroom and saw a model on it who's name I wanted to remember whilst forgetting im connected to work wifi on my personal device. When the the link opened it was a blocked site and the dread inside me ensued. I've had that come up before for opening gambling websites multiple times before and never have had a someone talk to me, although this is different (id like mention my employers don't really like me aswell which is also very concerning). For starters its a open wifi (only workers can be in range for, im not sure how many actually use it) and from memory I never had to put a username/password in (even if I did I would've just spammed letters) I work in a 24hour warehouse with over 900 employees (if found out ill be a social pariah if not fired), is it possible this could be traced back to me via ip address or phone blah blah blah? There is multiple different wifis available some are locked by passwords im presuming for those on the computers in logistics and IT Currently having a panic attack. (I know this has been asked before im just stressing, and to those before me this has happened too on Reddit did the people end up updating with never being caught)

Ever since 2020 I have been almost constantly harassed by someone on multiple different social media’s. For the longest while I wasn’t to bothered as it was kind of a fun mystery trying to figure out who it was. As time has gone on though the person doing it has become more deranged and scary.
When they first contacted me they tried to catfish me with fake photos and it took me about 3 months to figure out that they weren’t who they said they claimed. After I blocked them they created a new account and tried again but I pretty quickly realised it was the same person. From then on they have just been harassing me by sending me porn and videos of them doing weird stuff. They have gone through a lot of effort to blur stuff so I couldn’t really tell who it is.
This has been going on for years and honestly I could write for many many paragraphs of weird stuff they have done but it’s all kind of similar weird sexual stalker stuff. All I figured out myself is that this person most likely went to school with me because they obviously knew me semi well and that it was a girl. Yesterday though they sent me a video of her doing sexual stuff but I think what she used to blur herself glitched because all the blur was to the right and didn’t cover her face at all. She sent it and i saw it for a split second before she deleted it and i now know he it is.
It turned out to be a girl that I went to school with as I thought it would be but I’m not sure what to do. I didn’t know her well no one really didn’t because I don’t know if she spoke at home or what but she didn’t speak. She was also really badly bullied and I can remember a few times that she freaked out. She was in a few of my classes and at lunch she used to sit near where I used to sit so I know how she knew a few things that I thought only my friends knew.
Like I said I don’t know what to do if I do anything at all really. What she has done is weird and immoral but I can’t say that it like really annoyed me all that much. It’s been like a weird mystery I’ve been trying to solve and now it’s solved. She blocked me on everything and now that I know who she is I don’t suspect she will do it again at least not to me. I haven’t really told anyone who it was except my friend and I don’t think I should like shame her by telling people.

Is it legal?
Demus works within the strict limitations of the YouTube API. Playing requires a constant internet connection. No media content is stored on your device and therefore neither downloading nor offline playback is supported. All playback is done through an integrated Safari-like view.
Do music artists still get paid?
Yes! Listening to any song in my app counts as a view on the YouTube website and will therefore generate per-stream revenue to the artist.
How do you make money from your app when it's free with no ads?
There is an optional one-time in-app purchase which gives you access to some cool features such as color themes, app icons, and more advanced listening statistics.
Can it support iOS 16 and lower?

Of course I’m on mobile so sorry in advance, but I am at a loss. I moved to a new area about 3 months ago, and I am actually moving again at the end of this month. Partially due to this, as well as other reasons. Now my neighborhood is very quiet. There’s a dog park down the hill, and a school three blocks away. We have a school bus drive through every day, twice a day. Across the street is a fairly loud family. They have three kids and dogs, so of course they’ll have a lot going on. Their yard is TRASHED. As we speak they have cleaned it up a bit, and their dumpster is SURROUNDED by broken furniture, old mattresses, and hundreds of bags of trash. I believe it is because they were fined when the police were called for a different reason. Me and my husband are very quiet. We have two dogs but one is older and the other is totally crate trained. I know for a fact that even if they do bark, because we are on the second story and the only tenants in the building, you can’t hear them unless you’re in our driveway. Other than that, we really have not been bad neighbors. Maybe anti-social but that’s it. Now on to the issue at hand. The husband drives a large bed tow truck for work, and he parks it at his house. Recently he actually started parking it in his driveway, previously he was parking on the street but that has stopped. Now i understand large diesel engines work differently, so when it was snowy I didn’t really have a reason to be annoyed, but this guy starts his truck at 5 am, and idles it until 7:30/8 am when he leaves. It makes a hissing noise and wakes us up, I can hear it in every part of my apartment with the windows closed. It’s like a school bus. It makes me and my husband incredibly uncomfortable, especially since we both work nights and get home at 2-3 am. Now, due to the actions of the family (i.e. screaming, fighting, the son is always being violent, cops called often) I don’t feel safe walking over there to chat. We are a queer couple and I am transgender so I’ve always been anxious about confrontation. I did call the tow company he works for and explained the issue, and how I need to sleep, plus the city has a 8pm-7am noise ordinance. After I called my husband took the dogs out and the husband was yelling about “loud barking dogs” (every house on the street except my left side neighbor has a dog) and other things about what bs it is. The idling did not stop, so I unfortunately called the police after a week, and have called them a couple times since. Because it wasn’t stopping. Well, today he didn’t idle his truck. Instead he used his key to set off his horn 4-8 times every 20 minutes, and started his truck at 7am on the dot, since the noise ordinance is not in effect at that time. Obviously with me moving it will solve itself, but there’s an elderly couple who live to the left of me, the dog park brings all kinds of people walking the neighborhood, and the bus stop on the corner, plus the school being so close, i feel awful. As far as I have looked into it, a diesel engine doesn’t need to warm up for more than 30 minutes? Am I being too snooty??? Edited for spelling

Apple TV+ is one of the strangest streamers out there, with almost no licensed TV or film content and a small number of originals. That makes the best movies on Apple TV+ easy to find. Werner Herzog will show you multiple clips from Mimi Leader’s Deep Impact for no other reason than because he likes them, he finds them well-done and evocative—he says as much in that even-keeled, oddly accented voice over—then soon after chastise “film school doctrine” when complimenting a field video shot by a South Korean meteor specialist in Antarctica. As people load up their kayaks, canoes and boats ahead of Memorial Day weekend, local recreation company Adventure East and the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary are advising folks to keep safety in mind during National Safe Boating Week.
In 2022, the U.S. Coast Guard reported 4,040 accidents and 636 deaths resulting from recreational boating activities. Boaters of all types — especially paddlers in kayaks and canoes, as well as those on paddle boards — are urged to get their equipment inspected, properly prepare for boating and follow safety tips to ensure everyone has a fun and, most importantly, safe experience. National Safe Boating Week is observed the week before Memorial Day each year, as the holiday typically marks the arrival of warmer weather, which ushers in the recreational boating season. This year it is being observed from May 18 through May 24.
“Kayakers, paddlecraft as we call them, don’t think they’re boaters,” said William Bell, a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary for 43 years. “Things happen quick in small boats, that’s why in a kayak it’s more important [to be prepared]. … Good swimmers think they can put a life jacket on in the water, it’s difficult.”
To mark the occasion in the Pioneer Valley, where paddlecraft make up the vast majority of boaters in the region’s rivers, the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary is partnering with Sunderland-based outdoor recreation company Adventure East to inspect the business’ fleet of boats and then with the Sunderland Public Library to offer inspections of the public’s vessels.
On Friday, May 24, from 3 to 6 p.m., folks are invited to bring their kayaks, canoes and other boats to the parking lot behind the Sunderland Public Library at 20 School St., where Coast Guard Auxiliary members like Bell and Tom Fydenkevez, who also previously served decades on the Selectboard, will inspect the vessels free of charge. Adventure East will also be on hand to share details about their boating safety procedures, additional paddlecraft safety tips and great locations for people to bring their boats.
If your boat is in compliance, you will receive a vessel safety check decal for your boat to indicate you are in full compliance with federal and state boating laws. If deficiencies are found, a written report will be put together.

Safety tips

While it may be obvious, a key point for all boaters and passengers is the importance of wearing a life jacket or other form of personal flotation device, as Fydenkevez noted 75% of all fatal boat accidents involve drowning. In 85% of those drownings, the person who died was not wearing a life jacket. Three in four drownings also involved vessels less than 21 feet in length, according to the Coast Guard. He added that life jackets should fit properly and high-visibility ones are more effective.
“You know, the black and the blue [life jackets] look really good, but if you’re out there, it’s nice to have a red one or brightly colored one. … Coloration is really important,” Fydenkevez said.
As for additional items and equipment, all boaters should have a personal ID on them and it is recommended to have some sort of identification on the vessel. This identification should have a phone number on it, so if a boater is safe, but separated from their boat, first responders aren’t sent on an unnecessary search.
Paddlecraft boaters are advised to have an additional paddle or oar, a flashlight, a first aid kit, a registered beacon that can be attached to a boat to track their location, and food and water. Boaters are advised to leave alcohol on the shore, as its use is listed as the “leading-known contributing factor in fatal boating accidents,” according to the Coast Guard.
“People think they’re on the water, ‘What could happen to me?’” Fydenkevez said of many people’s mindsets when getting in or on a boat. Beyond equipment, and much like going for a hike, the public is advised to have a “float plan,” where you inform a family member, friend or other responsible party of your plans, which includes where you’re going and the expected time you’ll return. That way, authorities can be notified if you do not come back.
Other tips include dressing for the water, not the weather, because even if the weather is going to be above 90 degrees, water temperatures can still be dangerously low. This time of year in particular, the water temperatures are still in the low 60s, “so you don’t have an unlimited amount of time,” Fydenkevez said. The National Weather Service notes “cold shock can be just as severe and dangerous” from 60-degree water as it is with 32-degree water.
As members of the Coast Guard Auxiliary and Adventure East prepare to inspect boats on Friday, Adventure East founder Brian Pearson said his business has gotten their life jackets inspected and they get all 45 kayaks, 15 canoes and two giant canoes inspected by the Coast Guard Auxiliary.
“A lot of people kind of start their pathway into paddling with Adventure East, so we have a lot of people who may have fear or anxiety about starting a new thing that has more risk. … The Coast Guard says we know what we’re doing, which is a huge thing,” Pearson said. “It’s great to have that partnership and their interest in helping and supporting us.”
