I'm a reader, first and foremost — an awfully addicted one, if I'm being honest. Along with reading, the urge to write grew over time. Worlds and stories hunted my mind but whenever I sit down I feel overwhelmed and I couldn’t push down more than a couple of unsatisfying sentences and often end up feeling those hours wasted.
A little over a year ago, in November I think, I stumbled upon a writing challenge 55K words a month. I was late to it but I did manage to see through it, surprisingly, but after that, I was burned out.
Because of that and procrastination, I started working on a project, a web app to keep my growing just-started stories organized — lack of tools, that’s the excuse I gave myself not to write. And technically I was writing… just code instead of fiction.
The project quickly grew, from organizing books with chapters to characters and places. Minimalist and distraction-free was the third requirement. After that linking the characters/places to the chapters, chapters versioning for easy editing, then plot diagram visualization and interaction…etc. Nearly 9 months spent on it and 0 book writing but damn I love it.

I primarily use NC for birth control and find that I'm more in touch with my body as a result of tracking mood, skin changes, cervical mucus, sex drive, and physical symptoms like cramping.
It's convenient that the digital thermometer allows me to store my temperature from the morning and transfer it to the app via bluetooth because I don't sleep with my phone in my bedroom. I try to take my temperature around the same time every morning (6:15AM). NC encourages you to take your temp within a 2 hr. range from your typical temp. check. Personally I don't use the Oura ring or Apple watch because I don't like to sleep with jewelry, but it sounds convenient.
I also like that when we start trying to conceive, I have a pretty precise sense of when I'm fertile. I use the LH test strips (cheapest to buy on Amazon) for increased accuracy. NC's algorithm tells you exactly when to use these test strips based on your temperature tracking.
Insurance: I struggled to find a way to submit my NC claim to insurance. My OBGYN provided me a physical prescription. I ended up submitting a medical claim through the mail including the physical prescription, medical claim form provided on Cigna's website, following information I typed up and printed, and the invoice provided by NC. Cigna processed the claim as "Supplies" and as being Out-of-Network which means, according to my plan, I receive 50% back. I'm a little annoyed the plan didn't process as In-Network considering the provider who wrote the prescription is In-Network, but I'm glad to at least get partially reimbursed. I have a girl friend since childhood who, as it seems as we approach our 30s this year, is cutting off me and other long time friends because we are in relationships. A little background, we've had our ups and downs especially in our teen years because she was always hyper competitive with me, but she is a good friend with a big heart. I feel closer personality to my friends I've met in adulthood but I cherish our long term friendship and now that we live halfway across the country, I'm conscious about putting in more effort to maintain our friendship. However, it seems like she has started to cut off me and our other mutual childhood friend because we found partners. I've been dating a great guy for almost a year and our other friend got married 2 years ago. Both of us are independent outside our relationships, we don't just talk about our partners or invite partners to everything.
My friend stopped replying to our text threads and offers to Facetime etc, just no response in months. My friends live near each other, and the friend (without the partner) had a birthday party and invited a bunch of people, and didn't invite our mutual (married) friend. I didn't recognize a the people, so I creeped on their IGs and a lot of them have posts all about being happy being single or not needing a man (which is valid too.) I sent my friend a birthday gift as well as a personal gift because she recently bought a house, which is a huge accomplishment I'm proud of her for. My friend stopped replying to our text threads and offers to Facetime etc, just no response in months. My friends live near each other, and the friend (without the partner) had a birthday party and invited a bunch of people, and didn't invite our mutual (married) friend. I didn't recognize a the people, so I creeped on their IGs and a lot of them have posts all about being happy being single or not needing a man (which is valid too.) I posted this in the Kindle sub and received no response, so I'm thinking maybe my question is more relevant here.
I'm an avid reader of nonfiction books that I use for research, teaching, personal development, and leading an organization. I've had every generation of Kindle since the very first one (currently own both a Paperwhite and a Scribe). There is absolutely nothing as convenient as a Kindle when it comes to the convenience of reading. However, I struggle to replicate my system of marginalia and therefore struggle with how to best use Kindle for nonfiction even after all these years of use. This results in a love/hate relationship, as well as numerous attempts to start a book in Kindle only to wind up buying the physical copy a day or two later.
Let me give an example. In a physical book, I typically follow the author's structure by using a pen to put brackets around a sentence like, "Here are three outcomes...." And then I circle the words, "First," "Second," "Third," in the following paragraphs. This allows me to easily flip back later and see structure or the flow of a concept or argument. If the structure follows numerous section headings over multiple pages, I will simply write numbers (1, 2, 3, etc.) next to the section heading so that I can easily see the structure when flipping through the book later. I also like use other symbols such as a star or exclamation points in the margin, and sometimes I draw a line down the page next to a paragraph in order to indicate the whole paragraph is important without underlining every sentence, which allows me to then save underlining for the most important sentences that I want to stick out.
After all these years, I've struggled to really replicate this in a Kindle book. I thought maybe the Scribe would fix this issue, but it provides very little real world value to me in terms of annotation and note taking. It is just as easy to make a note on the keyboard. The Kindle app allows for change of color in highlights as well as for putting a star next to certain highlights (a feature that STILL doesn't exist on the Kindle devices after all these years!). I also am familiar with using Readwise and making heading notes (.h1, .h2, etc.). That is useful to an extent, but still not great.
Maybe I'm asking to much of an ereadeebook. However, I'm also sure it could just be me. I know there are many people here who read lots of nonfiction and likely made a transition at some point from physical books to ereaders and had to adapt in the same way. I value your experience and would appreciate any advice you could give, or insight into your own system for marginalia. Thanks in advance!

In the beginning the world was born from choas. Admist the chaos an intelligent being rose to power. This being was soon called god. God created the many kingdoms that now make up the world. In each kingdom he laid a powerful stone called the gods shard.
Each shard contains the power of a beast made by that same god. Allowing the owner of each shard to transform into a beast of similar statue. Within time however, the kingdoms adjusted. Using the shards to claim the land for generations to come. Each shard was passed down from descendant to descendant. Allowing those born of that house to harness it's raw powers.
The strongest shard was awarded to the royal family in the great war. This shard was the lion's shard. The royal family then established the capital city. A place where they live, but a city meant for the many to meet. The royal family had decided the capital city to be a violence free zone. Prohibiting different kingdoms from fighting within city borders.
But this story focuses on a specific kingdom. Within a landlocked nation lays the rodent kingdom. Within that we find ourselves in the humble home of Sir Reikin. The landlord of the small kingdom of rodents. His son the ever noble sir Moriya. Born to the rodent kingdom, yet he is the illegitimate child of another kingdom.
Though Moriya may hold more power than even his rather knows. With the ability to harness the rodent kingdoms shard and the shard of an unknown kingdom. They say his mother was from beyond this world. A stranger from another land. But as the only heir to the rodent kingdom what will happen?
