2024.04.14 13:10 LeeWiserEnvoy I allowed my dad’s offensive language to go unchecked until he was confronted this week by an upset public librarian

My dad is a guy in his early 60s. He’s overtly friendly and jolly, but a bit culturally out-of-touch as many people in their 60s may tend to be. Respectfully, he’s also not especially smart or intuitive about social etiquette with unfamiliar people.
As he’s become older and I’ve come into adulthood, there are a few little ‘jokes’ he says to strangers in public that used to make me cringe with embarrassment, but more recently have given me concern that someone will react badly to his old-fashioned humour.
These jokes are from a time of Australian larrikinism. If you’re not familiar with the style of larrikinism, it’s basically a working class, cheeky, irreverent personality that is meant to be light and friendly. Dad’s humour is quite distinctly rooted in this older style.
Some of the more concerning jokes are specific to interacting with hospitality service staff. As a reasonably tame example: when ordering honey for his tea, he’ll say “With honey, thanks honey” which he intends to be a cute little phrase but IMO risks coming off as lecherous as he becomes an even older guy interacting with young female servers. They do sometimes visibly roll their eyes and don’t make any acknowledgment, which is to be expected.
Another one which really embarrassed me as a younger person and now concerns me is a “69” joke he uses semi-frequently. When ordering or paying a bill, a server will ask what table he was sitting at and he answers “Number 69” while visibly stifling laughter. To him, he just thinks the number 69 itself is a funny sexual reference and it’s like he’s making a little prank. To others, I fear it could be interpreted as him hitting-on the young staff or saying something lecherous in general, but he ’s yet to ever be confronted about this.
In recent years I have felt like it is not my place to intervene by saying anything about these jokes and expressions. I’ve thought maybe it’s not that big of a deal, and maybe my perspective is skewed because of earlier embarrassment as a younger person. Basically I’ve thought that my policy will be to keep my mouth shut, and if someone ever gets offended by him, so be it.
Earlier this week, Dad is finally confronted by a stranger about one of these offhand remarks. For context, we live in Darwin which is much different to other capitals around Australia; there is a very large Aboriginal population that is visible throughout the city. Even prior to living in Darwin, Dad has always had this strange expression “white man’s magic”.
When he says “white man’s magic”, it’s in the context of remarking about impressive technology or other features of the modern developed world. It seems to be intended as a deliberately ironic thing to say, as if he’s making a joke about how out-of-touch it would be to say that as a serious remark, but unfortunately he delivers it completely straight-faced. I understand this could obviously be taken badly by many people.
So Dad comes home after visiting the library and he seems upset about something. He tells me this story about how the librarian was showing him how to use the scanner, he jokingly refers to it as “white man’s magic”, and the librarian then scolds him severely for saying that. He described her as an “angry woman with dyed hair” and said she went on a rant about the origin of public libraries coming from ancient Turkey and that he needs to be more respectful. I think he was genuinely very surprised and embarrassed to be confronted like this.
I always expected that he could be confronted like this, but now I wonder if I did the right thing. Would it have been better for me to speak with him earlier, even if he took it as me being overly sensitive, or did it make sense for me to wait until someone was badly offended so he understood better and learned not to repeat it? Should I take this opportunity to bring up the other odd jokes he makes with strangers, or just let it ride?
\
TLDR: My dad said something interpreted as racist, it was taken badly by a stranger, and now I feel somewhat guilty about not stopping him earlier. Should I talk to him about the other things he says that could be offensive to strangers, or should I just let it be?
Edit for clarity: He is a white guy. And the reason I feel bad is not really about other people taking offence - I mostly just don’t want him to be upset or embarrassed if he gets confronted about making a social faux pas.

2024.03.25 06:13 Anxiousbunny98 My Top 37 (Pre Show)

Hi everyone!
Now that all the songs are out I'm here to give my top 37 with reasons since I think y'all appreciated them. I hope so because or else this is embarrassing lol. I was going to make a video but honestly I'm sick and I can't be bothered. Maybe I'll make a national final favourites video or an after show video idk. Bear in mind that this is a very strong year so except for my bottom and top 3 this ranking could flip and flop depending on the day.

37 - Latvia
Somehow I dislike this song more now then when I put it dead last in my previous ranking. This is nearing boys do cry territory for me. It's so sludgy and dull. It wants to seem bigger and braver than it actually is. So hollow describes it perfectly. Also that national final performance is the definition of go girl give us nothing. Now I'm not going to blame Dons fully for that one it seems like the Supernova crew gave him ZERO to work with. Gah I'm annoyed we could have had kitty cats.
36 - France
France I get being scared okay. Fulenn got decimated and that was you taking a risk. But there's a difference between playing it safe and so safe it feels like it was written via algorithm. It really goes straight in one ear and right out, I personally think that 2025 needs to see France return to the national final format. Yeah they'll still play it safe but at least it might a fresher version.
35 - Moldova
I don't have anything to add minus still baffled.
34 - Australia
Let me be upfront. I could be biased against this song due to that awful music video. It's maybe one of the most uncomfortable music videos I've ever seen. If anyone knows the SBS PO Box let me know I have a therapy bill I need to send them. Outside of that the song feels quite generic. Except for the didgeridoo which I'm pretty certain is waiting to catch me slipping and come hunt me down. Which is interesting and I enjoy seeing aboriginal culture being portrayed at Eurovision. But it's also jarring against an otherwise fairly middle of the road pop song.
33 - Ukraine
So when I did my initial ranking I put Ukraine higher then I probably would have out of fear that I'd come off like a knuckle dragging troglodyte who licks the moss off rocks for nutrients. Turns out some of you agree. I still wouldn't have put it this low. Then that disappointment amplified when Serbia came out. I'll talk about it more when we get there but I feel like everything I don't like about Ukraine is done right by Serbia. And it makes it more gutting knowing that I know Jerry is capable of better. When God Shuts The Door was a masterpiece. I get why they didn't send her with that but this isn't it.
32 - Eden Golan
Please don't ruin the comments but I've decided I am going to rank this song. However I'm only going to mention the artist not the delegation because A) I feel like that would annoy them more than leaving them off completely and B) Their tomfoolery is not hers. Personally I really like the emotion and cadence in her voice. It really suits the song. Outside of that this is a bland middle of the road ballad. She drags it up a few places then it gets knocked down a few by my fear of it causing an international incident.
31 - Finland
It hurts to put a song of whimsy this low. It really really really does. However it feels like those 2010's teacher parodies of pop songs that were all over the internet at the time. It goes balls to the wall you gotta give it that. But it throws so much at you and then looks at you like "Eh? Eh?" that you just end up rolling your eyes. I felt the same about Let 3's last year but at least this one won't cause an international incident. Also maybe I'm a pearl clutching prude but please keep your pants on at Eurovision. I beg. I plead. Some rules.
30 - Ireland
I still respect it more than I like it. It's clear Bambie does this well. However I don't think Ouija pop is for me.
29 - UK
My thoughts on this song can be summed up with the following interaction I had with my mom -
I show her the ESC Samuel recap. It's alphabetical so naturally UK is last.
My mom 5 seconds after the video ends - "Wait what was the UK sending"
Me - "It was just on. It was the dizzy song." proceeds to hum a bit of it
My mom - "Oh." pause so pregnant it's picking out nursery colours "That wasn't Space Man." (Sam Ryder)
Now I wasn't a massive space man fan when it came out. But that song is more memorable than this one. Also is it just me or is it shady for the UK to constantly put Years and Years in parentheses after his name in all media related to the song? Like I get it's what he's known for. But can you imagine if when Harry Styles made Sign of the Times every media appearance had (One Direction) after his name? Rude.
28 - Norway
Well I was on the fence last time we spoke. However I now have decided I like the concept I don't like the execution. The idea of a song about a girl whose cursed breaking free from those confines is fascinating. However I feel like the emotion is masked by the yodelling (?) rather than adding to it. I still also don't like that performance. I still think it's way too dark to make heads or tails of it and I've decided that those nature shots are corny rather than interesting. I think it has the power to improve but right now I'm not there.
27 - Azerbaijan
Azerbaijan continues to Azerbaijan. However what pulls it up for me is that production. Interesting cadence and production choices? From Azerbaijan? Turns out it's more likely than you think. I also love the fact it's in Azeri. Someone anyone please caress me like he does that microphone.
26 - Spain
It has still yet to click. Though I do love seeing middle aged women take the spotlight for themselves. It's what they deserve.
25 - Denmark
I feel bad for this one. Any other year it would be top 20. This year is just so strong and there's other songs that I really enjoy whereas I'm fairly neutral on this one.
24 - Germany
Don't take the placement as a sign of I've waned on it. Because I think for what Germany is comfortable with this is pretty good. It's just not in my head like it was during my last ranking.
23 - Sweden
Ah Swedward. What in the 2017? Don't get me wrong it's a great version of that. Sweden is unable to miss production wise. But for a song called unforgettable it's quite forgettable. You're welcome for the very original joke that no one else has made. Jimmy honey I'm proud of you for staying booked and busy but maybe we could take a cruise?
22- Slovenia
The production is excellent. However I've found as more and more songs have released it's kind of faded into the background. Also I'm still not a fan of witch elements but I know that's a personal gripe.
21 - Luxembourg
I stand by everything I said in my previous review. This is a great package for the first time back in 31 years. It's only this low because there is others I like better.
20 - Netherlands
Okay I'm not afraid to admit that ESC Gabe changed my mind. I really had no clue that there was this much depth to this song. I love that it's a tribute to his father. And I am starting to really like the breakdown. However I haven't had that click moment plus I'm still nervous about the performance.
19 - Iceland
In this house we love all the pop girlies regardless of how close they are to getting their gold card. Is it a little dated? Yes. But I love the gospel elements and Hera sells it like it's her full time job. Everyone's allowed their own opinion but I don't get how people can hear this joyous lovely lady sing this upbeat song and go "No 😡 ".
18 - Albania
On paper if you had shown me the things they changed (switching to English , more yodelling , changing style etc.) I'd have gone oh nooooo what are they doing. Somehow it works significantly better. It actually feels empowering now rather than like a sad ballad which didn't fit at all.
17 - Armenia
I love seeing countries using their cultural influences at Eurovision. This song is bright , colorful and full of live. A little repetitive but I'm not sick of it yet.
16 - Portugal
Once again Portugal delivers a soft and elegant banger. Her voice is stunning. My only complaint is that national final performance was a little bland but that can be fixed. Especially with vocals like that.
15 - Austria
It's growing on me slowly but surely. However every time I hear this song I hear another electronic element and I go oh no how is this going to go. It will either crash and burn or do brilliantly and the jury is out.
14 - Serbia
See? I'm not a contrary Mary ballad hater. I love the image of one solitary flower in a desolate wasteland. And the fact that it ties back to a specific Serbian queen and the flower named after her because of her strength. That to me works much better as a story of faith rather than just "Hey be like x good women" like Ukraine.
13 - Lithuania
A massive bop but you know how I said I wondered if it would get a bit too repetitive? Yeah I'm finding it a bit too repetitive. Now I must really like it to still put it at 13.
12 - Croatia
Even though it's not in my top 10 I still would love it to win. Baby Lasagne has put a lot of work into it. Plus can you imagine the Cinderella story? An act who wasn't even make into their national final going to Eurovision and winning it all. Yes please.
11 - Czechia
That revamp added the perfect amount of feminine rage to the song. I'm glad to see it finally getting its flowers. That national final performance to me is not indicative of it's actual quality.
10 - Poland
Nothing much to add except for that I still really like it and I think it's not getting its flowers due to whom picked it.
9 - Malta
Love that revamp. The flute to me adds a siren quality that sets it apart from slo mo and adds to the song perfectly. Also I'd like this dance to go viral on Tiktok. It's got good Tiktok dance quality vibes.
8 - Cyprus
The Mediterranean 2000's girlies are out in full force and I love it. I've lowered it because I think Greece does the same thing and has elements I like better but it's fabulous.
7 - Greece
The 2000's vibes , the unmistakably Greek elements , the memeified music video. Yes to all of it. The fact that this is number 7 shows just how strong this year is.
6 - San Marino
Dead last in the odds is downright tomfoolery. No M'am. This is the exact kind of Pop Punk Eurovision requires more of. Kenzy is such a burst of bright chaotic energy.
5 - Georgia
Frankly the day that Georgia sends a song in English that makes sense is going to be so sad. So thank God this doesn't. Nutsa is such a dynamic performer and she puts her whole Nutsa into it. The production is so slick and those drums are working overtime to make this a legendary song. I'm going to warn y'all in advance that if Latvia qualifies and this doesn't I will become a lunatic. Also this isn't related to the entry and I doubt she's reading but Nutsa if you are I'm so sorry about your brother. I can't imagine the emotions you're feeling right now and I'm thinking about you.
4 - Belgium
Spectacular. I cannot wait to see it live. So much you could do staging wise.
3 - Italy
Spicy and fun. Still makes me feel like a sassy lady. Only gone down because of Switzerland.
2 - Switzerland
Wow who would have thunk we'd be here. This is such a unique entry and it's an entry that could have so easily gone wrong. Opera is a hard genre and then you're going to combine it with pop? That takes true talent. Also as someone whose struggling right now the thought of maybe eventually having "broke the code" to a life I'm happy with is quite comforting. The day that happens I'll blast this song.
1- Estonia
Wooooo! Obsessed. This song will be in Spotify top 100 I can tell you that right now.

2024.03.16 00:38 PepperAntique MOOOOOOOAAAAAARRRR background info for the current setting of Needle's Eye.

Again, still not in full on writer's mode. But here's some more updates on the current lore as it stands in Marina/Eli/Murphy's timeline.
Enjoy.
Countries/Governments that have Gates (and how they're handling them):
As established before (if you paid attention) the Gates don't have the same LOCATIONAL limitation that the Door Knocker Device had and can connect any two locations as long as the formulas and spells are done right.
Impact these changes have had on the Earth:
----Now the negative side of all of that^^^.----
Changes that have occurred in the Other World:
One big change for both worlds:
Obviously the sudden realization that magic exists was a huge deal for Earth. What none of the Earth governments expected was the fact that SOULS were an important part of magic. The confirmation, albeit only after decades of debate and study, that souls exist in some sense has, understandably rattled quite a few religions across Earth. Necromancy has caused more problems than it has solved, even if it is used to solve crimes. (it's only marginally successful at that because Earth is still figuring it out)
The fact that Gods exist (ssssssh they don't know about the big change there) was an even bigger game changer. Almost every religious establishment on Earth has denied this Other World belief and refuses to accept any evidence to support it. This denial has only been strengthened by the seeming loss of contact with the deities as a result of James and Joey's actions at the end of the first story.
Oddly the Buddhists, Pastafarians, Rastafarians, and the rare (though more common at this point in the story) followers of the old gods (ie; vikings, greek gods, the kami, etc) on Earth, were very accepting of this new change. They still don't worship any of those gods..... Except, the Pastafarians did latch on to the Other World's God of Feasts, who was frequently depicted eating a bowl of noodles even in ancient Other World depictions. It isn't helping the other world's cause that even in the 22nd century Pastafarianism is largely considered a joke religion.

And yes, that is admission that it is now the 22nd century in the current story. There. That's as close as you're getting to an actual YEAR. That's all I'm giving you. Fuckin' deal with it nerds.

2024.03.09 15:02 Pulp-Ficti0n Sliding scale of racism for you dumb white bastards

I'd like to educate you all dumb white bastards on this sub about racism. Vilifying you based on your race is ok in some circumstances. Racism is not a hard and fast rule. It depends on how marginalised and disadvantaged that race is.
To help you dumb whities, here's a sliding scale of racism from what's clearly not racist to what is blatantly racist.
Dumb WHITE (insert adjective) - not racist at all because whites are always doing the oppressing. Leave your white privilege where it is.
➖ Dumb POM - not racist as the Poms have conquered the world
➖ Dumb SCOTSMAN / IRISHMAN - could be racist as they have been oppressed by the Poms for centuries. But we should all feel free to pay the shit out of their stupid accents
➖ Dumb CHINAMAN Very racist. Even though their skin is practically white (maybe yellow, but let's not call them yellow bastards), Chinese have been oppressed in Australia and have to put up with being called Ching Chongs, being blindfolded with dental floss and jokes about dog and cat meat in their unidentified meat stir fry meals
➖ Dumb INDIAN As in the ones from the Sub-Continent, this is extremely racist. Their skin is brown and that should say it all. But if we need to say more, they've had to endure "Thank you, come again" jokes their whole lives and endure terrible stereo types about being car wash workers (well, actually... that's true, but still!)
➖ Dum ABORIGINAL (BLACK) or other words such as the brand of cheese they had to re-name and that terrible word which rhymes with "choong". First let me acknowledge elders drunk, sobering up and emerging into a drunken state. You can not vilify them about their race. We destroyed their culture which has been proven to have lived in Australia for over 1.2 billion years. I mean, we couldn't even give them a Voice to Parliament for fuck sake!
I hope this educates you dumb white bastard colonists to understand how it's OK to vilify certain races if they haven't been oppressed and that it's not OK to vilify others.

2024.03.05 19:40 FANCY-Y0U I have a theory about why Nichelle is so ‘popular’

As we all know, Nichelle is a… divisive character to say the least. A lot of people are disappointed with the way her character was handled/written and i would lie if i would tell you that i was not feeling the same way even tho i personally like her as a character.
I was thinking about how ever since people found out we were getting a new cast, Nichelle was one of the, if not THE, most popular contestant, purely based on her design. Earlier today i saw one of those ‘who is your favorite …. character’ posts and this time the question was who is peoples favorite black character. And that is where it suddenly clicked for me. Nichelle is the only black female character from the main series with the ‘default’ body type and i truly feel like this has played a huge part in her popularity purely based on looks. This might have been said before but i have never heard anyone about this so here goes noting!
Now i want to make this 10000% clear; there is NOTHING wrong with being wider, taller, heavier or smaller than other people, every body type is beautiful in their own way and most importantly, it’s the inside that counts! But let me explain myself a bit more;
So far we have gotten 4 (or 5 if one counts Sierra) black female characters in the main series; Leshawna, Jasmine, Millie and Nichelle. (I personally think Jasmine is supposed to be Aboriginal Australian, but for the sake of this argument i will list her here as well). Leshawna is easily one of the most liked and beloved characters from the whole series, but times were different when the show its first season aired in 2007. The show did not shy away from making comments about Leshawnas weight and even tho she had a love interest (Harold), we have to be real with ourselves and admit that that relationship was also made with the intention for comedic undertones, (the ‘sister with a ‘tude’ paired with the ‘napoleon dynamite nerd’) and not because Leshawna was necessarily seen as attractive ‘in-universe’.
Sierra is a bit of an odd ball, with the only part of her ethnicity being confirmed being that she has some German blood in her. That said; in my opnion she does look like she is atleast partly black so i will include her here. I might be biased here because Sierra is one of my least favorite characters in the entire franchise, but i feel like we can all collectively agree that Sierra is also seen as ‘not desirable’ in-universe. Her body type might be ‘default’ (even tho she is taller by a fairly large margin than the other female cast members from gen 1/1,5), but her personality is SO gimmicky and so extreme (and in my opinion PROBLEMATIC!) that any character being attracted to her in-universe (that isn’t Stockholm syndrome Cody) would simply not work. It is the same reason why a love interest for characters like Leonard or Staci would never work, they are SO connected to their gimmick/stereotype, that it is borderline impossible for those characters to have a normal relationship or even normal interactions with any of the other castmates that does not revolve around said other character being weirded out by them. And thank God for that, because a character like Sierra would never fly in the year that is 2024…. anyways, NEXT!
Our next black character is Jasmine, whose whole thing was that she is a smart, strong but most of all tall. Again; Jasmine got graced with a love interest (Shawn) and they were arguably the best part of the season (minus pre-evil scarlett, but thats a conversation for another day). Jasmine is a character liked by many, in the fandom and in-universe alike, but again; it is very clearly stated in the show that she is not seen as ‘desirable’ in-universe.
That brings is the our two newest black female characters; Millie and Nichelle! Thank god that times have changed, because i wouldve been scared to see if Millie would have gotten the same treatment as Leshawna if she would have joined a different generation cast. Millie is a character who is established to be more ‘brains’ over ‘brawn’, but as far as we know, that has nothing to do with her being plus sized, thats just her personality (because characters like Emma, Ripper, MK and Zee who also diverge from the default body types, seem to keep up fine during physical challenges), but we did not know this when the season first got announced, all we knew is that Millie was a plus sized female character and given TD’s track record, none of us would’ve been surprised if they would have made some problematic dialogue or storylines about her weight, which brings us to Nichelle.
Nichelle is the first black female character which we knew would FOR SURE be seen as ‘attractive/desirable’ IN-UNIVERSE. One of the trailers even established the fact that she was a famous movie star. And this is why i think a lot of people have clouded judgement about Nichelle, it is more of a ‘what could have been’ situation. ‘What if we have a black girl that could have a love interest/relationship that is not purely played for jokes’ ‘what if we have a black girl that would have multiple cast mates crush on her or flirt with her out loud’ and again; i am not saying people ONLY like her for having the default body type, but like i’ve stated before, once i noticed this i could not help but feel like it plays atleast some part.
I do want to state again that this is purely an objective take and it is not my intention to bodyshame anyone or offend anyone! Let me know what guys think!
Edit: Added a part about Sierra and edited some typos!

2024.03.05 15:43 Haunting-Arm784 Alchemy and Dreams are a key theme of Persona 6

As a fan of the Persona series, I have studied the topic of Jungian psychology quite a bit, finding it quite interesting. When the insider pointed out that the code name for Persona 6 was Project Carbon, I wondered what that means in the context of Jungian psychology?

After some digging online, I discovered that Jung studied alchemy, the ancestor of modern chemistry, of which carbon is a part. In short, it was by studying alchemy for many years (40 years, if you believe some references), that Jung built the concepts of his psychology - Persona, Shadow, and so on. He considered alchemical processes to be a symbolic process of individuation, and its symbols to be secret signs of this.

The most notable example of this is Magna Opus, the process of creating the philosopher's stone. The four stages are Nigredo (black color, death and decay), Albedo (white color, restructuring into a new form), Citrinitas (yellow light, gaining understanding; misfortune is mentioned) and Rubedo (red color, creation of the philosopher's stone through an alchemical wedding and the appearance of Rebis - a person who has balanced the masculine and feminine in himself, a perfect being).

As for dreams, before the discovery of alchemy, Jung repeatedly had dreams with the same pattern. This prompted him to study the topic and in the book “Psychology and Alchemy” itself, he studied the dreams of one person to prove his theories.

And delving into this topic in Persona 6 makes sense - in the mythology of the Australian aborigines there was a “Dream Time”, when the material world did not yet exist and space was inhabited by gods, cultural heroes and other supernatural beings. And when our reality was formed (which can be associated with alchemy), all these gods and heroes remained in dreams and periodically appeared to people.

Even more interesting here is H. P. Lovecraft's Dreamland Cycle. This amazing world with its unusual visuals and the characters inhabiting it (dream people like Randolph Carter, traveling around this country, various creatures) is excellent material for a video game.

From this point of view, Jose and Azathoth, the characters of Persona 5 Royale, begin to make sense:

  1. Jose - short for Joseph. The Bible featured a character with that name - a dreamer who could reveal the hidden meanings of dreams and thus earned the favor of the Egyptian pharaoh (which can also play a role in P6 - the mythology of Egypt is rich in deities and various creatures). Additionally, Jose's appearance may be a reference to Magna Opus - his clothing colors are black (Nigredo), white (Albedo) and yellow eyes (Citrinitas). The only thing missing is the Rubedo stage, but at Royal he was just on the path to achieving it with his studies of people.

  1. Azathoth, in addition to being a Lovecraft character, has a connection with dreams. He constantly sleeps and the other gods support this dream, because as soon as he wakes up, reality will disappear - after all, he created it through his dreams. As for alchemy, his name refers to nitrogen - the alchemical cure for all diseases.

While these are all theories without clear evidence, they nonetheless show the enormous potential that could come with Persona 6. Whether Atlus will be able to develop it is another matter. Not to mention the fact that they can make a game about something completely different. Time will show.

P.S. Carbon, by the way, was mentioned in Jung’s book. Here's the proof (the quote may not be accurate):

I do not want to mislead you into thinking that I know everything about the nature of the “center” - because it is simply unknowable and can only be expressed symbolically through its own phenomenology, as a particular, accidental, with each object of perception.

Among the various characteristics, one struck me from the very beginning - the phenomenon of quaternity. That it is not simply a matter of, say, the "four" compass directions or something like that can be demonstrated by the fact that there is often a competition between three and four. There is also, but much less frequently, competition between four and five, although five-ray mandalas must be characterized as anomalous due to their asymmetry. Therefore, a clear requirement of four (or a high statistical probability of them) would be normal.

Now about (I cannot refrain from noting) a curious “joke of nature”: the main chemical element of the physical organism - carbon - is characterized by four valences; It is also well known that diamond is crystalline carbon. Carbon is black - coal, graphite, but diamond is “pure water”. To make such an analogy requires a deplorable kind of intellectual extravagance in which the phenomenon of the four is declared to be merely a poetic fancy of the conscious mind, and not a spontaneous product of the objective psyche.

Even if we suppose that dreams can be influenced to any appreciable extent by auto-suggestion - in which case this would naturally be largely a matter of their meaning rather than their form - it would still be necessary to prove that the conscious mind of the dreamer has contributed considerable efforts to express the idea of quaternity in the unconscious. But in this case, as in many others that I have observed, such a possibility is absolutely excluded, it is completely incompatible with numerous historical and ethnological parallels.

Taking these facts as a whole, we come, in my opinion, to the inevitable conclusion that there is a certain psychic element here that expresses itself through quaternity. This does not require bold thinking or extravagant imagination. If I have called the center "the self," I have done so after sober reflection and careful weighing of empirical and historical data. The materialist interpretation can easily claim that the "center" is nothing more than the place at which the psyche ceases to be knowable, because here it is united with the body. And the spiritualist interpretation may object that this "self" is nothing other than the "spirit" which animates the soul and body and invades time and space at this creative point.

I have deliberately refrained from such physical and metaphysical speculations and content myself with establishing an empirical fact that is infinitely more important for the development of human knowledge than the pursuit of fashionable intellectual delights or hasty "religious" creeds.

To be honest, Jung is difficult to understand due to his florid style. But there is definitely a mention of carbon here, as black (coal, graphite) and white (diamond). Which coincides with reports from insiders about the black and white color theme of Persona 6.

2024.02.27 23:24 BritishAsianMalePod I'm a student journalist in the UK wanting to enter the media whilst keeping my principles - wtf do i do?

I always knew the papers were corrupt - only an idiot can't see that. I knew I could never work for any of them.
But now I see the BBC are corrupt with Palestine, the strikes. I genuinely believe they just tow the govt line. Sky with Kay Burley is a joke.
Channel 4 is maybe ok. I really dislike the woman who interviewed Jordan Peterson though (not that I'm a fan of JP at all but she made him look good tbh with how poor her interview was). Plus that Stephen Fry thing.
I'm also british asian and I have A LOT to say about this. So much to say. I don't see one media outlet representing us fairly. Even the 'diverse, inclusive' BBC ... still does basically nothing in its entertainment output and only commissions shows which show us as all religious fruitcakes. Not one represents the millions of us which are actually liberal. Don't get me started on their news output. I mean wtf was citizen khan? Seriously?
Reach PLC has decimated local media and made them all unusable and half the stories aren't even local.
I always had the mentality of change from within but I don't know if I can and they'd even let me in first place - I have open views on social media (all sane, not ashamed of any of them, but our media is insane) and I think I'd just be blackballed.
I also want to work with people who are nice. If I worked at the Sun, I'd just probably be depressed after spending all day surrounded by terrible people.
I wouldn't be comfortable working for a totally biased left wing outlet either because I don't think they are useful - no one watches/listens apart from left wing people. They also seem (which is typical of left wingers .. probably just humans) to be so disparate and divided and not much solidarity. Everyone wants their outlet to be king rather than help the cause.
I don't even care if they're not left wing, just don't lie. That's all I ask.
Wtf do I do?
edit: BBC world news also sometimes does some great stuff though imo. They're one of only media outlets to cover international events because they aren't constrained by needing to bow down to what british public wants to see. For example they did a great piece about aboriginal australians that I thought only they could do. Should we appreciate this? They are by far the best staffed for this at end of day with foreign correspondents. Should we not work within BBC therefore?

2024.02.22 09:02 Haruki_Ann What do I do? I'm being bullied and harassed consistently, I'm almost 18 and in my last year of school.

I'm a 17 year old female; I'm used to bullying and all of that, I've been bullied most of my life, through primary school and it has helped me grow a major armour shell, and I've had my 13 year old fights in the instagram comments so I'm not overly sensitive to being called names.
There are these kids at my school; 3 girls and 2 boys, lets jsut called them by their names because I have no creativity and I'm fed up with their shit. Mia, Shaylie, Sebastian, Aliesha, and Alex.
So here's some backstory; Alex was my boyfriend up until awhile ago, he had convinced me that he could care for me better then my boyfriend at the time, he bought me gifts and gave me absolute princess treatment despite not being together, so I made the mistake of cheating, leaving my boyfriend and going for the guy i was with. Well, if i wasn't dumb enough he dumped me and basically said I was the entire problem. This harassment has been happening since the first day of school (we started on the 22nd of January) I was already being picked on a bit from some juniours (because god forbid Australian schools actually do shit about bullying, and god forbid i wear my BLACK school uniform with a bit of makeup e.g eye liner, foundation, blush and some tinted lipstick, though that's not important)
The first day I had starter back, I was very insecure about being bullied. My mother hadn't been the greatest so I left her, and she threw a tantrum and disowned me, I never knew my dad, I had previously lived with 2 close family members, who then eventually kicked me out because 3 mentally ill people living together was exhausting and, they were fed up with all the drama and bullying, and they decided in the end it was my fault this was happening to me and that this isn't something they wanted to be around.
I'm currently living with a friend, I've been in contact with my case managers, been working with youth housing homes etc, and just trying to find a job, so I can save up money and get out of here as fast as I can. I'm considered a hard working girl, my teachers like me and good people like me, but, I do get picked on a lot, some people theorise it's because they get a reaction out of me, or because they're jealous of me, and I don't think it's either. I do understand cheating on my boyfriend was wrong, and I was very clear about how much I regretted it. It was my first time cheating and, I honestly just felt guilty because this boy, I believed he loved me and wanted to care for me; when I got kicked out he offered me a place to stay and we were alright. His parents were absolute assholes, everytime something happened in the house, it was blamed on me for living there. One of the issues mainly being "rent". They were struggling on rent before and this boyfriend had claimed it was not an issue, he said he "didn't feel lright if I went to someone elses house" and so I grabbed my things and went to live with them, and immediately everything became my fault. I did my fair share of work, i cleaned the kitchen every 2 days, did the dishes, i made sure my boyfriend was up and ready for school, I'd make him breakfast and a coffee, I'd babysit his little sisters when no one else could, and on top of that i was trying to find somewhere to stay and a job to work at. I only found out about 2 months in my boyfriends mum kept messaging him about stuff I've done, which ranged from Stealing, to being lazy, to "bullying " his little sisters. (I made ONE joke at the time, with permission from my boyfriend as he had called my brother a fat lazy slob, so I assumed making a small harmless joke, which was just "well we're all sitting in here with you so there's not much to celebrate" when one of his sisters had said "haha you have to sit next to (siblings name) and I apologised after and said "I'm sorry I didn't mean that, please don't take it to heart")
Anyways I had found out that my boyfriend had actually been talking shit about me, he had been saying he hated "all these people" and then he'd go and sit with them during his classes, his lunch, and they'd shit talk me and he would do nothing to defend me, there are many rumours which aren't true and he did nothing, infact he helped start some of them. He had been nit picking at things I did that he didn't like, even though we had the same conversations in tears. He kept telling me he'd always have feelings for one of his ex girlfriends, who had actually suggested he break up with me, and now they both spend most afternoons hanging out. He also said he'd want to talk to other girls and that he'd eventually get bored. I already lost so much abd I didn't want to lose more, and I let him talk to other girls on the conditions that I could talk to other guys and i knew what was going on, he agreed. He was ok with that for a bit, but then he started getting secluded and private, he wouldn't communicate anything with me, if i was ever upset he'd just shrug it off, if i was upset with him he'd play the "but I'm just so tired and exhausted I'm sorry" We had long chats about communication and that he had to start listening to my advice. And he didn't; instead of talking to me he told all pf his friends, and then 2 days later dumped me for being "a major problem" I told him, "who's next? Who's the next girl then" and he said "nobody, and probably no one for a long time". I discovered he was cheating on me with a girl i absolutely DESPISED and he claimed that too, i asked him to block her and he refused, he claimed they never talked, and for the next 3 weeks, they didn't, until i saw her snapping her and all the saved snaps. Now that I'm back at school; I'm with one of my good friends who I was initially going to live with for a bit, and we both get harassed every single day. Now here's some stories of how I'm being bullied At first it started off with small remarks like "slut" and "whore" and telling me to close my legs. (Which is funny considering my body count is 2 and these girls have been sleeping with men since they were 14, all consensual, and multiple times with adults, which I have reported too since one of these girls are 17 with a 26 year old boyfriend, one of them are pregnant with their adult baby daddies child who kicked her out for cheating on him with multiple different men) And then it started escalating, first came the insults, next came the rumours, and then it came to stalking me and following me around school. "Why can't you keep your fucking legs shut whore" and all sorts of stuff like that. And now they're bringing all my other things into it, the fact I have a very neglectful family, the fact I have to live with my friends, the fact I got dumped by my boyfriend and I told her "the only reason you're so happy with your pathetic life is because of all the privileges you get from the school and the fact your daddy hand feeds you with a golden spoon" Considering this girl is aboriginal, I'm in no way racist but, our school has a whole committee just for the indigenous kids in our school, our school is a really bit shit hole, and they can't do anything about the committee due to it being directly associated with the government. This is not a race thing but, majority of the time it's the aboriginal kids often create issues; they're always the reason fights are happening, why everyone generally feels unsafe to even use the bathrooms, and I've had multiple run ins with many of these kids, and when they do get in trouble, the Committee does everything in their power to stop these kids from getting in trouble because it's "discrimination" And that's exactly what Shaylie is taking advantage of, since school, day 1 she's been picking on me, I've been reporting it, not responding to it, ignoring them, and now since they can't get a reaction that way, they've been taking drastic measures. Including taking things outside of school. We have a certain speed limit people can go in the school zones as there are a lot of lollipop ladies and kids trying to walk home after school. Most afternoons this chick RACES down full speed to me, slows down for a second to yell at me and throw the trash from her car at me, and I've even spoken to the police about the harassment and stalking, they've been trying to contact my friend online to bully her, she wants to do it back but I keep telling her "no, just don't". We had a swimming carnival today, i didn't want to go as yesterday Shaylie and her gang had been outside her classroom vaping and trying to get away with it, i had a friend with me since we were looking for our English class which just upped and vanished, and they kept following us calling me a whore and a slut. I reported it and went home sick, and decided not to go to the carnival. I woke up this morning, waiting not to go, until i find out it's a "requirement" or else I could not graduate, and "being sick" was not good enough, I needed a doctors note and I didn't feel like spending $285 to see my doctor, just to get a note so miss one day of school, but also I didn't want to be expelled so I went I brought my art book, some food and planned on sitting with friends all day, and all day have I had to move around because Shaylie and Mia were around, they followed me up a stadium yelling my alias name and spraying me and my art work with water (I was pretty pissed off about it since the outlining took 7 fucking hours but yeah fuck me right?) I saw 4 seperate teachers about this, including my vice principal, the guidance counsellor and my math and English Teacher, and each of them said "I can't deal with this right now there are too many kids" even though they were just standing to the side and all of the schools faculty had gone to this carnival, there were plenty of teachers standing around, I just didn't know their names because they were new this year and working with the year 7s. During this afternoon these girls decided to fill their gun up with an energy drink, and spray me with it, i was wearing free dress since the theme was tropical, I opted for a white skirt and shirt to give the impression of a sunday on the beach; and these girls have stained my clothes with the energy drink. I went up to my guidance counsellor and I told her "hey, these girls are still picking on me, they have been all day, please can you do something about it" and she told me to get on the bus, and i went, and she didn't even process what I said because she let the other two girls on with me who dunked fucking energy drink on me, and kept spraying me in the face. Multiple of my friends had stepped in to say "hey stop that, it's really fucking immature and you're making this worse for yourself" and they never listened, they continued, called one of my friends a little bitch for not understanding fun and told one of the strongest guys in our school that he's fat (he isn't, far from it, but he does eat alot bc he works a lot) And he had told her head on "you better fuck off anf stop messing around or I'm gonna come in a start shit" and she blew it our her ass and went "or what, what are you gonna do" and I told her to grow a pair, asked if she had any cognitive thoughts besides being a cunt, if she gets off from bullying people, and if she had any sort of a brain, which she clearly hasn't; she'd stop picking on me. She obviously didn't take this well because her whole "lol slut" turned into "you wanna fuckin go cuz" and she proceeded to spray energy drink directly into my fucking eye, multiple times; i grabbed her arm and pushed her off; and her friends, who i didn't realise was watching; jumped over the fence and came to gang up on me. I'm about 56kg, i work out and I do muay Thai, and they're either overly fat or very anorexic girls so they didn't do much, other then the fact i kicked one of them in the stomach to give me space and tried to knee them in the face when they kept coming after me. I wasn't able to do my stance in time, i have a heavy school bag and it had twisted around my legs, once i got it off, and got myself ready, they ran off like a bunch of pussies. The teachers had gotten involved it was a mess. I had a go at my guidance counsellor and my vice principals, i kept telling them "this is blatant fucking harassment, I have done everything YOU guys have asked me to, and I've followed every rule and suggestion you have given me, you told me, for months, you WOULD do something, and you haven't" i called the police to discuss the assault and the harassment out side of school; and all the sid was take a statement and leave, they told me "i think the school should handle this one" even though they won't, they haven't. I even gathered all my witnesses and all the people involved to talk to the police, the vice principals and the guidance counsellors, and they didn't take any of it. Infact it's beginning to sound like they're on Shaylies side rather then mine since she lied about the whole ordeal, they gave her the best treatment and there were no consequences, and there won't be any consequences because if they do, they're in fear of getting sued for discrimination (it has happened before) They told both parties to "email their side of the story to the vice principal" And I have done nothing but that, with the months of harassment, I've had to start making most my accounts private and I'm trying to convince some of friends too. Since they defended me the girls are now picking on them too. My friend, best friend in fact, gets bullied daily from them aswell, she doesn't want to report it because she doesn't want more drama, and she doesn't want to fight back. The girls are lot more violent and disgusting with her, saying her vagina looks like a fish, deliberately going to her, smelling her and then yelling to the whole class she stinks. They quite literally, rip chunks of her hair out, she has a couple bald spots due to all the hair being ripped out and she's been trying so hard to go from her dyed black hair to natural blonde. They push her around and hit her, and when she wants to say something they play it off as "ohh I'm sooo sorry, I didn't mean to" and then do it again, and she doesn't want to do anything about it. I don't know what to do at this point, I'm really stuck; I was thinking of getting a lawyer to sue the school for negligence but I'm not 18 yet and I don't have the finances for it. I asked the school, and the police, if they could drive by their houses or give their parents a call and go "hey so, this is what your daughter is doing, it's getting a little out of control, please do something or your daughter is suspended" I got falsely reported for bullying once, one of my friends ex boyfriends had told her to kill herself, and she told a bunch of our friends, and then apparently i got dragged into it, so 4 of us were reported for bullying and told if we continued we be suspended or expelled, i was only angry at her for lying to me about stuff, I never intentionally said anything to hurt her.
Majority of the adults and people I know are on my side but, even with all the "support" it doesn't help or stop the fact I'm being bullied and harassed, it's the point I'm too scared to even leave the house because what if they're driving by? What if they find out where I live? These girls have always been trouble makers but, I can guarantee, will not stop. I've done everything from calling the police, submitting reports directly to the school, been in with my Counsellors to try and make plans, been in so many fucking meetings regarding "my safety", I'm my own biggest enemy and I can be self destructive but I'm not destructive over this, it's just annoying, and quite literally illegal, some of these girls are already 18, they have jobs and cars, and are still living with mummy and daddy, and they rub it in my face like I'm missing out. They know nothing about me and I'm not going to let it destroy me but, self control is minimal, and my anger is rising like crazy, I'd include some photos of today if I'm able to, evidence really, but I'm not sure how.
