2024.05.21 15:23 Elgusto498 Birthdays are kinda annoying
Mine began to be since memorial times, but ever since i've got a phone (i.e. 14yrs old/10 yrs Ago), other people birthdays kinda became aswell. Don't get me wrong, the fact that people i Care and kinda Care about lived another Full year is great, but do i really have to add things besides Just "happy birthday" every single time to every single people? Like why tho?
Idk, maybe this is a Brasil thing, but to me who is in a group chat with a fuckton of cousins which i haven't talked in a while due to traffic and sensory difficulties and have to outta nowhere generate each year a new "genuine hartfelt" happy birthday msg is tiring and annoying.

2024.05.21 15:01 SharkEva AITA for not giving my adopted daughter a stuffed animal for her high school graduation, when both of my biological children got one?
I am not the OOP. The OOP is u/evastraea posting in AmItheAsshole Concluded as per OOP 2 updates - Long Original - 21st June 2022 Update1 - 27th June 2022 Comment from OOP - 27th June 2022
AITA for not giving my adopted daughter a stuffed animal for her high school graduation, when both of my biological children got one?
I [49f] have 3 children, [22f], [19m], and [18f]. My oldest are my biological children from a previous marriage, and my youngest I became a mother to at the age of 2 when I married her widowed father. She has only ever called me mom, and I officially adopted her at the age of 12.
Now on to the issue with the stuffed animals: years and years ago, when I was only 20 and in college, I worked at a children's museum. I adored the job and working with kids, and had the idea to buy stuffed animals from the gift shop to be my future-kids' first stuffed animals whenever they were born. I had gotten a stuffed bear at birth that was very special to me growing up, and on my 18th birthday my parents gifted me a duplicate they had bought way back when and kept for me all these years. I found this so special, and wanted to do something similar, so I bought 6 stuffed animals from the museum's gift shop; 3 to be given at birth, and 3 duplicates. I had no idea at the time how many kids I would have, but I knew I wasn't planning on having more than 3, so I didn't get any more.
My first daughter received the stuffed animal I selected for her while pregnant. Then, between her birth and the birth of my son, I miscarried. The experience was deeply traumatic for me, especially as I miscarried in my second trimester, and I buried my baby with the stuffed animal they would have gotten. I kept the duplicate to for comfort, to cuddle and hold.
Finally, my son was born and received the last of the stuffed animals I had set aside so many years ago. Now, here's where I may be the asshole. For both my daughter and son's high school graduations, I surprised them with the duplicates, for them to take to college with them and compare against the stuffies they've been loving on their whole lives. Both were very moved by this, and took both (original and duplicate) to school with them.
My youngest, however, never received a stuffed animal, and so when her graduation celebration rolled along I had no duplicate to gift her. I watched her unpack all her gifts, and her face fall when she got to the last one and realized. She didn't really say anything, just got this super sad look on her face, and excused herself to her room. I followed to ask what was wrong, but she said she didn't want to talk to me, so her father went in instead.
According to him she cried to him that she didn't feel as loved by me as her siblings, and as much a part of the family - the unwrapping of her siblings' stuffed animals were very emotional events, and she had had the expectation she'd be getting the same. In hindsight I could have easily done something similar for her whenever I first came into her life, even if it wouldn't have been from the museum, but I just didn't think of it. She has been cold to me this entire last week, and I feel so terrible, I've offered to take her out to a special dinner the two of us to make amends but she turned me down. AITA?
Edit: the votes are in, and I am definitively TA. Many of you are suggesting that I get her a stuffie that reminds me of her, or maybe to get her two so she can continue the tradition with her future kids. But I think what I will do is gift her the duplicate my parents gifted me of my special plush bear I received at birth, which is one of my most treasured possessions, and deeply meaningful to me. Thank you all for the advice, it is genuinely appreciated.
Comments
Mrs-Addams YTA. Nothing quite says āyouāre not like my other kidsā like leaving her out of a family tradition when her turn came. Iām sorry about the loss of your baby and understand why you kept that stuffed animal for your own, however, the tradition could have started with her when she joined your family at age 2, or when you formally adopted her.
SmartassMouth89 YTA your kids grew up together and for years you never once thought to go and buy two stuffed animals for your adoptive daughter?
QueenKeisha Right? In 16 years, and after giving 2 other bears away, she didnāt once think, hey what about youngest?
SmartassMouth89 Right? She liked the daughters dad enough to marry him but didnāt think that it would be a good idea to give the two year old a stuffie at the wedding?
Update - 6 days later
Long story short: my daughter found my reddit post, and came to me in tears apologizing for her reaction. This was NOT my expectation, and I assured her she had nothing to apologize for, as I had been in the wrong. We had a long discussion about the situation, our feelings, and how to move forward from this, and although I know she is still hurt we are on our way to making amends.
Long story long: so what even happened? As I've now discovered, my daughter loves browsing AITA. She stumbled on my post, and after reading it in it's entirety, as well as a good chunk of the comments (all of mine, and many left by other redditors) she came to me in tears apologizing for her reaction.
She sobbed in my arms that she didn't want this to be the end of our relationship, and that she was sorry, and wanted to enjoy this last summer together. I held her and assured her she had nothing to apologize for, and apologized myself (I did shed a little tear, but tried to keep my emotions in check as I did not want the burden of comforting me to be on her).
What followed was a productive but incredibly emotionally vulnerable conversation, the details of which I will not disclose entirely. She has been going through a rough time, and my impression (I could be wrong) is that the lack of a stuffie at graduation was a catalyst for bigger emotions. She did take me up on my offer to take her to dinner, and I've now booked a reservation at a nice restaurant she has been wanting to go to for a while.
And last night we cooked her favorite dinner together, which gave us an opportunity to smooth things over somewhat. We have not yet broached the subject of me intending to gift her my own plush, except for very briefly (she insisted I didn't have to, and seemed to feel a lot of guilt), but I still plan to. I just feel it would be best to wait until things have cooled down.
And if she truly doesn't feel comfortable taking it, I plan on getting a bear of a similar look to be its "little brother" for her to take care of. That's the update, obviously things have not magically mended overnight, but we are finally on-track to a resolution. Many thanks to all that left advice, and please check the comments below for clarification on many questions asked before passing any judgements (I far exceeded the allowed word limit, and have instead pasted much of what I intended to say here below).
Comments
aroundincircles Read your first post and this one, and I feel it from both sides. My wife and I recently adopted a bio niece (13 yo this week) and she welcomes us as dad and mom, but we've run into a number of times where the kids will pull out something from a trip we went on, or an activity we did, etc years before she was ever in our lives, and she'll go "why don't you have one of those for me"? It's really hard, some of these things are simply impossible for us to get, and/or would cost us thousands of dollars (when We already spent 30+k on custody/adoption lawyers and court fees). She also didn't even bring anything with her when we picked her up, she wasn't even allowed to bring a change of underwear. It's been something that we've had to deal with in counselling that her life with us didn't start till she was almost 12, and we have to begin fresh from there, we cannot turn back the clock and give her back an entire childhood she missed. Like when we went camping for the first time with her, and we were getting things out to visually see what we needed to get from the store and we pulled out the kid's sleeping bags, and she was like "where is mine", and the fact that we didn't already have one hurt her.
Glum_Hamster_1076 And that doesnāt make you an ahole. I hope no one will call you one. Situations change and youāre not always able to āmake up for itā. OP didnāt do this to hurt her daughter and itās weird people are painting it that way. I hope things are going well with you all in therapy and your family is making great strides together.
Comment from OOP
When I initially posted to AITA, I was prepared to face judgment, and open to constructive criticism. However, while I did receive many constructive comments, which I truly appreciate, I received many more that were hateful and unconstructive, and I will admit, I did get defensive. But the attitude I took on in the comments is not one I brought into my interactions with my daughter; please understand that I did not throw in her face all the kind things I feel I've done for her over the years, but was rather attempting to contextualize our relationship for strangers who've never met us.
And before passing any further judgment in the comments, please check below for answers to a lot of the questions asked in the original thread. To answer a few questions: why did I not adopt her until 10 years after I came into her life? Because I never sought to force myself on her as her mother, and waited until she could give me explicit consent to adopt her. Why did I never buy her any stuffed animals? I did. I bought her many when I first met her, as well as one for her official adoption day, and every adoption day celebration since.
And I did technically gift her a stuffed animal for her graduation, too, it was just a plush of her college's mascot rather than a duplicate of a treasured plush from her childhood. So why did I not buy her a duplicate at any point over the last 16 years? I did not think to until my oldest graduated and received hers, by which point I (mistakenly) felt the significance would be lost. Both my bio kids received stuffies saved for them for decades, whereas she would have received one saved for only four years. Instead I tried to honor her in other ways, such as (as I described in the comments) crafting her a cookbook of generational family recipes that I illustrated by hand, because she is her own individual.
Truthfully, while I understand the sentiments expressed in the comments, I don't believe recognizing differences is inherently a bad thing. The duplicate stuffies my bio kids received were duplicates of the very first stuffies to ever be in their crib with them. Their receival of them was a birth event, and I did not give birth to my youngest. But that does not mean I love her any less, or that she is any less my daughter.
We have established our own traditions honoring her entry into my life, such as our celebration of her adoption day, and while I realize I could have handled the stuffie situation better, I do believe it was an honest mistake. But how could I not include her in a treasured family tradition, knowing how important it is (especially as an adopted child) to feel a part of the family? Because I truly did not realize this
one specific tradition meant as much to her as it did.
I have strived to include her in as many family traditions as possible throughout the years. As I mentioned in the comments, she speaks German because I taught and spoke it to her growing up, even though her father does not. We celebrate German traditions, such as baking countless batches of German Christmas cookies together every year (just the two of us, neither of her siblings have any interest in baking), which is something I grew up doing with my mom, and every year it is quality time I deeply treasure.
For her 16th birthday I gifted her the locket my mother gifted me on my 16th, which she'd been gifted by my grandmother before me - this actually upset my eldest daughter, who had not received such a hand-me-down, and this is just to name a few. So given the fact that she has on occasion received and taken part in traditions my other kids have been excluded from, I did not think the stuffie would carry as much weight as it ultimately did. But isn't her reaction an indication that there are larger issues at play, and that she has likely felt this way for a while? Perhaps.
I am not a perfect adoptive mother, and have never claimed to be. And I can not see inside her brain, so I cannot know her true feelings. But my sense - and I may be wrong! - is that the larger issues at play relate back to her bio mom, which is something she expressed to me in our conversation. I did not disclose this in my original post, because I did not believe it to be relevant, and it is also a painful topic within our family, but her bio mom committed suicide whilst in the thick of post-partum depression. This has obviously impacted my daughter, who has been in and out of therapy for years grappling with feelings of loss, and guilt.
She is highly sensitive to feeling isolated within our family unit, which is something I should have taken into account in this situation, and I own that. I realize this is a huge hunk of text, but given the visceral reaction many had, I felt it was important to cover my bases. Come to whatever conclusions you all like, I will likely not be checking the comments for my own mental health, and the wellbeing of my family. To all who left genuine advice, even if that meant calling me an asshole, I truly do appreciate you. And to all who said hateful things, especially in regard to the loss of my baby, please consider the impact your words may have moving forward

Rice-Correct Youāre a good mom. It mightāve been a mistake not to gift her the plush, and it might, as you said, just have been indicative of some larger big emotions going on, as graduating is a HUGE milestone and going to college is an enormous life change that is very rewarding and exciting, but also stressful. But it sounds like youāve been amazing about creating beautiful memories and experiences together! I think at some point, the plush will be a distant memory. From your post, it seems pretty clear you DO have a good relationship, and youāre a caring, empathetic parent. ENJOY your summer together, Mama!
sharraleigh Don't take the hateful comments personally; it's easy to be cruel online to a faceless stranger. Also, your original post didn't include all this info (it would've been impossible to anyway), and therefore lacked a lot of the back story and nuance that frankly, a real person's life experience encompasses. Your daughter probably saw your post and realized how her reaction hurt your feelings and read the hateful comments and felt bad for you. It sounds like you have a great relationship and you're lucky to have each other in your lives!

2024.05.21 11:58 dinga_dong- Made viral youtube kids rhyme song with ai only
https://reddit.com/link/1cx458m/video/tyvfowea5r1d1/player I have recently made a AI based youtube shorts channel for kids. It's doing great so far. Tbh this is the first time I got some youtube success. Kids' channels are growing the fastest on YouTube. Channels like Cocomelon get more views than Mr. Beast. This is the first video I made for this channel. Everything from script to audio and video is done with AI. Here are the steps I followed
First go to ChatGPT. Now that 4o is free for everyone we have better outputs. We use ChatGPT to generate rhymes or songs. 4o is great at it. The prompt:
Can you create 10 children's rhymes of 4 paragraphs each that are educational and entertaining? Please include a variety of topics such as animals, space, fairy tales, everyday heroes like firefighters and doctors, seasons, and important life skills like sharing and kindness. Each rhyme should be catchy, easy to understand for young children, and incorporate fun facts or moral lessons where applicable. Feel free to introduce imaginative characters and vibrant settings to make the rhymes more engaging.
You have 10 poems now. Go to Suno .com and create an account, you can use google. Now from the create page, select āCustom Modeā. Copy paste one the the lyrics/rhymes. For style of music I used, āchildren rhymes songā. Give a title and click on āCreateā. The results are surprisingly good! Download the audio.
On to the last step. Go to adobe express. From dashboard go to animate from audio or just search on google, āadobe animate from audioā. Select a character and background. Upload the sound file. Wait till the video is generated. You have your rhymes video ready. This takes like 5-10 minutes only for the whole process.
I hope you guys found this post helpful. I run an AI tools directory called seekme.ai. Iāve listed over 13k AI tools. This post is an edited version of my recent newsletter post. Consider subscribing to my newsletter to get more of these tutorials and use cases of AIs.

2024.05.21 11:57 Music_Man31 Iām in love with a coworker, but I need to let her go.
So this time last year (May ā23) I went to see HR regarding a hiring committee I was a part of and the favoritism they showed a candidate. The Director of HR, granted she was the only HR employee at the time, is this beautiful African American woman with big, bright eyes and a gorgeous smile. We talked about my committee and then we just talked about life. She was going through hard times. We ended up becoming fast friends. I would go and check up on her.
Fast forward to August, I went to go see her again. Just dropped in as a quick hello and was reminded how beautiful she was. The next week I saw her. She stopped by where I was standing in line for food and touched my shoulder, finger to skin, and I literally felt a spark go through me. She just stopped to say hi. I think that was the moment I couldnāt stop thinking about her. From that moment forward I started to go to her office once a week. We had great conversation. I was learning more about her. We had astrology in common. We learned about each otherās families. We both were having problems as she was on the edge of divorce. My love life at the time was nonexistent with my wife and crumbling. However I started to enjoy her company way more than expected.
Because of our interest in astrology I knew her birthday was coming up in October. I decided to buy her a birthday card with a gift card for a restaurant. Before I got out of the car I said to myself āI think Iām in love with herā. Thatās when I knew I was in trouble. I had began to write poems about her (which seem to be therapeutic) and having non stop thoughts of her. Mind you Iām still going to her office once a week. I gave her the card. We are still talking. Sheās still going through shit with her husband. Iām talking about her to select coworkers. I offered to buy her lunch, another way to spend time with her. Well turns out she had a meeting with our CEO and we would have had less than 10 minutes. I was devastated. Like seriously heartbroken. Thus began my limerence. I still went to see her every chance I got. Probably too much. She never told me to not come and see her. In fact it became āYou should come by more oftenā. I did.
A conference that both of us and several other employees attended happened in late November to December. We were very connected at the hip. She flashed me her room number without saying a word. I chose not to go. Literally the week before during Thanksgiving two things happened. 1) I ran into a psychic who gave me a reading and told me not to sleep with her. 2) My wife and I had a devastating argument about the state of our marriage. It had went to shit when we started therapy. Skipping the fact that I didnāt go up that night we had a great time together. We spent an incredible amount of time together. It was fun. I felt incredibly refreshed having spent time with her. The one downside to the entire trip was that she told me she was reconciling with her husband.
I asked her out twice for a meal in December. She never gave a direct no, but created excuses. January came and she got sick. I texted her a lot checking in on her. When she came back I asked her if I texted her too much. She said yes. I completely stopped. I think my poetry ramped up more because of that. She also reminded me she was trying to reconcile with her husband. In the same breath she asked me how I was doing as I was newly separated. It became emotional.
The next event per se happened in February. After Valentineās Day I went to see her. I asked how things were going with her and her husband. She said they went well. I had started talking with people on dating apps. I mentioned this to her and she seemed a bit bothered. I was surprised. Somehow my wife came into conversation and I told her that I talk to her more than my wife. She blushed! Despite having good moments with her I was heartbroken that her and her husband were doing well.
I didnāt go see her for two weeks. There was a function midday. She waved at me and I was excited to see her. When I started to walk towards her she turned around and ignored me. This hurt me severely as I have trauma from people ignoring me. I stopped going to see her again. She texts me for my birthday, granted it was a week late, but I was excited. This was the first time we had a text conversation in over two months. She mentioned that she had to take medical leave. Needless to say I was devastated. I went to see her and she was very sad. She started telling me about her family life as a child, but we were interrupted.
While she was out, a coworker started a meal train account for her so she wouldnāt have to cook. There was an area where you could buy DoorDash gift cards. I bought $200 worth and also sent $300 in visa gift cards via a coworker who would see her.
When she comes back to work she tries to give one of the gift cards back. I told her I wouldnāt accept it back.
Iām very in love (or limerence/infatuated) with her. Iāve tried dating other people, but that doesnāt help as I end up talking about her when asked is there someone else.
I want to ask her what her thoughts are about me, but Iām horrified that she thinks Iām a creep.

2024.05.21 11:29 catespice Memoirs of a Long Pig
āWeāre a meat family,ā my dad would proudly tell strangers. Heād wait for the quizzical look, then launch into detail, starting with how many freezers we had, how long we could sustain ourselves on the contents. It was just his way of starting a conversation, which made sense when you considered that raising and home-killing animals for food was, for want of a better term, his life-long hobby. His prize possession was one of those industrial-sized vacuum sealers: you could put half a pig inside and wrap it in plastic so tightly that every wrinkle and skin fold waxed unreal with shiny detail.
If we hadnāt lived in a rural area, albeit semi-urbanised, I guess it would have been pretty weird. But the mostly farming-stock locals only found his extra enthusiasm a little bit odd.
When he wasnāt being a bit embarrassing talking about it, I never really paid much heed to his hobby. I had a childās vaguely grateful awareness that though our family went through some lean financial times, our stomachs never suffered like some of the families around us. All the beef, pork, ham and bacon in those big old chest freezers passed down from his dad really could have fed us for years.
I should preface all this by saying that I wasnāt a particularly bright kid, though neither was I dumb. I didnāt fail badly at anything in school, I just never achieved beyond a pass. I didnāt know it yet back then, still quietly dreaming about being a ballet star or a dressage champion, but mediocrity was my destiny. And I think thatās why I got on so well with my Aunt Liz.
Liz was my dadās live-in youngest sister. She was one of those women who get described as ābubblyā ā not really pretty, not really smart, not a lot going on besides just beingā¦ well, all Liz. But she was salt of the earth; kind, caring, and great with kids. She was the only person who would willingly mind my two older brothers, who fought like hellcats and caused more trouble than the whole last generation of my family combined. People would privately lament to my parents that it was a shame Liz didnāt have kids of her own, but dad would just shake his head and say Liz liked it that way ā that all the fun of looking after kids is being able to give them back to their parents.
I guess she was like me; nice, but mediocre. Lovely, but somehow forgettable when she wasnāt doing something for you.
But when Liz left us, I couldnāt forget her.
In hindsight, it was pretty weird timing that we had a big fortieth birthday party for Liz right before she disappeared. She was radiant that night; sheād hired a local girl to do her hair and makeup, and it was honestly the first time Iād ever seen her look pretty. Sheād even worn a push-up bra under a tight red dress, which flattered her very plump curves well enough that the neighbourās farmhand was spotted disappearing into the woolshed with her for a snog. In my dawning awareness, that gave a plain girl hope: if Aunty Liz could get a guy at forty, maybe things would turn out okay for me.
Anyway, I couldnāt forget how her pink cheeks, her eyes, her whole self, glowed that night before Liz went to bed. She said it was the best birthday ever, and that she was very much looking forward to the next stage of her life.
Would I have done anything different, if I had known? If I had realised what, exactly, that next stage was?
The week after the party, Aunt Liz said she was going on a little holiday up north, to visit some old school friends. She packed her things ā she didnāt honestly have that many ā and drove her little orange mini out onto the main road. And with a wave of one fleshy hand, she was gone. Nobody really thought much of it when she didnāt call, because nobody rural had cellphones back then. And Liz was, as I said, somehow kinda forgettable when she wasnāt right in front of you.
When we hadnāt had contact for six weeks, Dad tracked down the land line numbers for their old school buddies. They were surprised to hear from him ā Liz had never arrived, so they had just assumed sheād cancelled her visit. No-one had thought to check. I eavesdropped on the conversation, and it sounded for all the world like *they* had forgotten about Aunt Liz, too.
From there it became a missing person case. The local cops came and talked to all of us; the farmhand whoād been seen snogging her was briefly detained, then let go, dad got grilled at length, even my hellion brothers were questioned thoroughly to see if this was one of their wild and dangerous pranks gone wrong.
But everything was a dead end. Nobody knew where Liz was, or what had happened to her.
The remains of her old mini were found halfway across the country, burned out on a beach, on a derelict stretch of ragged, rocky coastline. The police assumed murder and combed the area for remains. But even the most expert divers couldnāt conquer the incredible undertow and fast-shifting seabed of that coastline to look for evidence, so none was forthcoming.
Eventually the cops collectively shrugged and said that there was really nothing more they could do unless more information suddenly came to light. The locals knew nothing, no witnesses had come forward, and the trail was cold. As far as anyone knew, poor aunt Liz had been murdered on some desolate beach, far away from her home.
It didnāt feel fair to me. Sheād once mentioned wanting her remains buried on our farm, in the graveyard plot beside grandma and grandad.
So, in my grief, I went into her room to look for something of hers to bury beside them.
Like I said, Liz didnāt have many things. Her room was pretty spartan, and her wardrobe was mostly sensible farm stuff. There was one exception: she, like me, did like to read, and she had a pretty good collection of well-thumbed books. I think itās the escapism ā even the most mediocre girl can lose herself in the plot of some trashy romance novel, imagine thereās still hope of being swept off her feet by that handsome stableboy, his inexplicable yearning for chubby plain girls.
So I set myself the task of going through the books, to find the right one to bury in the graveyard plot.
Most of them were exactly what youād expect, but some of them were racier than I was used to. I felt various parts of my body flushing and tingling, as I read breathless prose about calloused hands touching the softest flesh of the protagonist. Okay, if Iām honest with myself, I might have got a little *too* invested in my project at that point. But that was also why I persisted going through her entire collection, until I found the ragged paperback from 1970, entitled Tawny Sands. And inside that trashy cardboard romance cover, I discovered not the tale of Tawny Sands, but some carefully hand-cut, stitched-in pages. A handwritten story in my Auntās rounded penmanship: Memoirs of a Long Pig.
I read her story twice in a row, utterly gripped.
Aunt Liz was no Stephen King ā heck, she wasnāt even the Goosebumps guy ā but her story was gripping and compelling, and I couldnāt put it down. Even if I hadnāt known her, I think that would have been true.
The gist of it was that Liz, when she was sixteen, had discovered that our family had a very long history of eating what she described as āLong Porkā. Itās an antipodean term, anglicised from the Pacific Islands: human meat.
Like me, young Liz still had some hopes and dreams. In one of her many failed attempts to find a special talent, sheād taken up cooking as a hobby. Naturally, with our familyās overabundance of meat, sheād scoured the freezers in the shed for ingredients: the racks of ribs and stacks of pork chops, butcher-paper wrappings all neatly labelled with the first letter of the name of the animal they came from.
She found familiar meat from Rodney, one of the pigs that had been recently slaughtered, emblazoned with an āRā in her fatherās strong, blocky lettering. There were cutlets labelled āMā for Mary, from one of the lambs sheād hand-reared, and āFā for Ferdinand, the steer theyād killed the month before. But she couldnāt explain the many, many curious parcels of meat on one side of the huge freezer, all labelled āJā ā at least, not until she took it all out and assembled it as well as she could on the scoured concrete floor of the killing shed. A big, frozen jigsaw puzzle without the box, her best attempt to discover what kind of beast the pieces had come from.
The animal, she quickly realised, was a Long Pig. Her own Aunt Jenny, who had died the month before ā just after her fortieth birthday.
Fortunately, or perhaps not, for Liz, her father entered the shed right at that moment and realised his daughter had discovered the family secret. He sat down calmly on the lid of the freezer, and explained to her that this was a long-running family tradition, dating back to at least before his grandfather had been born.
āThere are always people in life, Liz,ā heād said, āwho wonāt really amount to much. They want to be useful, want to be more. They strive and they strive, trying job after job, hobby after hobby, trying to hit on something theyāre really good at. Something that makes them special. Those people can waste their whole lives, chasing dreams that never come true. Eventually they die unfulfilled, knowing that all their time has been wasted. That what they leave behind will fade quickly.ā
His voice was oddly gentle as he leaned down and patted one of the neatly wrapped cuts of Aunt Jenny, still sitting frozen on the shed floor.
āYour Aunt Jenny was one of those people. So was my Aunt Irene.ā He paused to gaze at his daughter, his next words peppered with emphasis. āBut you see, my sweet Liz, they did find a purpose in life. They did find a way to be special, and they left this world utterly certain of their gift.ā He stood up, stretched his back. āLet me show you.ā
Liz waited while my grandad meticulously stacked the meat back into the freezer, all but one J-marked parcel that looked for all the world like a thick venison steak. He took her back to the farmhouse, and reverently unwrapped the deep red, heavily marbled meat to let it thaw. Then he laid it in the familyās ancient, cast-iron pan, basting it with butter and rosemary until a heavenly scent filled the kitchen, and Aunt Liz couldnāt stop her mouth from watering.
āJust try it. Let her show you. Youāll see exactly what Iām talking about.ā
Even though she knew it was her aunt, Liz couldnāt stop herself from taking that first bite. There was something transcendent about the smell, overriding her natural revulsion that this was human meat, not one of their farm animals. For the first time, she truly realised it: weāre just another kind of animal. And werenāt her memories of Mary the lamb almost as fond as her memories of Aunt Jenny?
Liz explained then, in her curly handwriting, the explosion of taste that had assaulted her when she tried the steak. It was tender, it was succulent, it was rich beyond imagining. The fats melted on her tongue, lingering somewhere between pork and beef, but oddly neither. The flavour of the meat defied identification; something familiar, yet not.
But one thing she couldnāt deny; it was the most delicious thing she had ever eaten. Tears dripped onto her plate, mingled with the juice, the grease ā not grief, but a pure, real, giddy delight.
āYouāre tasting your auntās love for this family,ā my grandad explained. āHer entire life was carefully curated, to eventually make unforgettable moments for us, just like this. This was her way of being special. This was the greatest gift she could possibly bring to our world ā and because she realised that, she died with not a single regret. She knew her life had purpose. She was perfectly, completely fulfilled.ā
I felt those words. I felt them lodge in my own belly, settling uncomfortably deep. I knew Aunt Liz, probably better than anyone else in the family. Iād seen how fucking happy sheād been on her fortieth, how goddamn fulfilled she was, despite apparently being a *nobody* and achieving *nothing*. Somehow, in the space of a single day, she had gone from being a forgettable background character to becoming the *main character*, immortalising herself in our familyās history with her sacrifice. Quite literally becoming part of all of us, forever.
I went to the killing shed after I finished with the book. I looked inside the freezers.
But there were no vacuum-sealed packages labelled āLā, no matter how deep I dug into the frozen stacks of plastic-wrapped flesh. Panicked now, not sure if I wanted to connect all the dots or unconnect them, I tried to think back over the last few months, recall any meals that had been unusually good. A few Sundays ago, weād had a stew that really hit the spot and left me craving more. And I realised that the family had a really good night that night; my brothers behaved themselves, my parents didnāt fight, and grandma and grandad had been there. Hadnāt they looked far moreā¦ expectant than they should have?
I strained my brain, trying to recall if Iād seen the homekill bag on the kitchen bench ā if Iād registered what letter it was. I knew it wasnāt an L. I would have remembered if it was an L.
And then it hit me, the memory, the connection, sizzling as if branded with a hot iron.
It had been an āEā.
E for Elizabeth. Not for Edward the pig.
I snorted at my own stupidity ā of *course* Liz was short for Elizabeth ā and as I comprehended my lack of smarts, I felt something give inside me.
I wasnāt clever, and nothing, nothing would ever make me smart. I had no big talents. I wasnāt beautiful, or even cute ā and even if I had a million plastic surgeries, it still wouldnāt fulfill me. It wouldnāt be real.
I was a Liz.
I was a Jenny.
I was whoever the first aunt had been, the aunt who had dedicated her life to making her flesh as delicious as possible, who had worked every damn minute to be the best Long Pig she could ever be.
I wondered how many magical family evenings had been spent eating Aunt Jenny. How many glorious, satisfying, memorable dishes had been made out of her.
Andā¦ I wanted that. I wanted to finally know I had a *purpose* in life. One so simple, and so easy to achieve.
I wanted what Aunt Liz had.
***
It's my fortieth birthday today and Iām so fucking excited. For the last twenty-four years, Iāve dedicated myself to this moment; Iāve eaten exactly what I needed to, Iāve exercised just enough, but not too much, to maintain that perfect balance of marbling vs tenderness. Iāve relaxed and meditated to keep all those amazing flavours inside of me. Iāve researched all the greatest meats in the world, from prime Angus beef to A5 Wagyu. I really think I may have outdone myself.
Iām having my hair and makeup done at the local salon this afternoon, and Iām going to look so pretty; all prize piggy on show at the fair. Iām even going to have a big red ribbon in my hair, in memory of Aunt Liz.
Maybe thereāll be a cute boy I can snog in the wool shed, maybe there wonāt ā I donāt really care; because the most important, most certain thing is that Iām going to be the most delicious Long Pig in the history of our entire family.
Iām going to make everyone so damn happy, and Iām just so glad I can share my story with you all, instead of hiding it in a grubby book like poor Aunt Liz.
My only real disappointment? That you wonāt get to taste me.
Reader, I have loved, loved my life. My Long Pork will be out of this world: once tasted, never, ever forgotten.

2024.05.21 11:13 The_Way358 Essential Teachings: The Good News That God Reigns
The Scriptures seem to imply that the kingdom of God isn't exactly synonymous with what is called "the Church." The Church was a temporary eschatological community of believers that existed on earth in preparation of a kingdom where God Himself would reign, and said community had Christ reign over them in the meantime. The head of the Church was Christ, with the Father serving as
his head (1 Cor. 11:3). The Scriptures teach that, when all Christ's enemies were to be made his footstool, he was to give back all authority to the Father (Psa. 110:1, 1 Cor. 15:22-28), and it is this page's belief that this happened in
70 AD.
The following quotation is from the above hyperlink:
As for the "1000 years" mentioned in Revelation, they are apocalyptic metaphor for the 40 years Christ "reigned" (triumphed) over his enemies both human and spirit, with the final triumph being the judgement of apostate Jerusalem. The "1000 years" began with his ascension, and ended with this judgement.
Thus, the community to replace the Church on earth was to be the kingdom of God. But, what even
is the kingdom of God, and why did God have to reclaim authority of His own creation in the first place?
To be as succinct as possible: man sinned, and so the great level of authority God initially granted us ourselves over the creation was stripped. As a result, the human condition has suffered and it must be redeemed for God to allow us to reign with Him in the way that He originally intended for us. God has always been sovereign, of course, but He seeks the good of man to make us stewards over His world with Him, as that was His original plan and this was His original view of what a kingdom of His truly looks like: a kingdom characterized by man's love for Him and love for others.
A Biblical understanding of Adam's sin, contrary to popular thought, isn't that we are guilty of what he did personally. We simply inherit his fallen nature and a fallen world as a result of his sin, the same way a baby could leave the womb already addicted to certain substances because the mother abused said substances while pregnant. It's not the baby's fault for its condition, it was the parent's. But the baby is born with this condition and enters the world like this nonetheless.
The implication of this is that we are all only guilty of our
own sins, and whether or not we ever seek to treat (or possibly cure) our condition in the first place is on us. We were dealt a bad hand due to Adam, sure, but God doesn't hold us responsible for what our forefather did. God only holds us responsible for what
we do, and whether or not we seek to be liberated from the dark forces which keep us in bondage to our sinful condition (Gen. 4:6-7, Deut. 24:16, Jer. 31:30, Ezek. 18, Matt. 9:9-13).
The whole Old Testament is essentially a record of God's people constantly breaking their covenant(s) with Him. There are individuals mentioned throughout that were, of course, commended by God and the Biblical authors for their righteousness in honestly pursuing to remain faithful to their covenant with Him. But even the best of these people often faltered and, in fact, did rather heinous things in their lives at one point or another. One of the greatest examples of this is king David, who was literally called by the Scriptures "a man after God's own heart" (1 Sam. 13:14, Acts 13:22). Yet, this same man at one point committed adultery and then murdered the man he stole the wife of to try and cover it up. This was a heinous thing, and David repented of what he did with genuine sorrow and guilt toward God. God ultimately forgave him, but not without a heavy hand of chastisement and earthly consequences for his actions.
All throughout the Old Testament, you see various men of God who were deemed righteous, but these same men were usually shown to have some major flaw that prevented them from living a life that could be characterized as
consistent obedience to the commandments to love God and love others as themselves. There is something deeply
wrong with man's heart, according to the Bible. Something so wrong, in fact, that a whole prophecy had to be given that promised to address the issue of man's seeming incapability to accomplish fulfilling the commandment to love
consistently on their own without some sort of divine help from above:
"A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh."-Ezekiel 36:26
Naturalistic philosophies see the physical world as all that exists. Humans beings are the result of mindless, chance causes and processes. Humans are essentially animals ā highly evolved, but no different in significance than any other living thing. Thus naturalistic views demote humans. But this view leaves a lot unexplained. Why do humans practice altruism, benevolence, or acts of heroism? What explains acts of incredible goodness? Sure, naturalistic arguments have been made that true altruism doesn't exist, and that "unconditional love" is really just an illusion that's been disguised very well by our survival instincts that we've developed over a long period of time at certain stages of our evolutionary process. However, many people have found such arguments to be unpersuasive and naive when compared to their actual experience of the world as they mature in their lives and have what they know to be truly meaningful experiences that can't simply be reduced in the way that the naturalist wishes them to be. This realization was ultimately why I transitioned from hard atheism to agnostic spiritualism at one point or another.
On the other extreme of these things, transcendental worldviews and philosophies say that the
physical world is illusory. Only the spiritual world is ultimately real. Humans are an expression of the divine spirit that is the essence of all things. If naturalistic views demote humans to the level of animals, transcendental views promote human beings. God is not āout thereā somewhere; we are God. God is all, thus God is us. But this view doesnāt explain real evil. Why are people selfish? Why do they hurt others? What accounts for personal acts of evil like rape or terrorism? If we are all truly "God," then why would we ever do such things to what is ultimately "ourself"? And why can't a person who practices the belief that we are all actually "God" be only loving? There are so many people who adopt this view of reality who are constantly, day by day, finding that they struggle to be as truly loving as they wish to be because they will still sometimes find themselves thinking and doing rather evil and selfish things. I can speak from experience here, remembering throwing myself into the New Age movement when I was desperately seeking what I did not know at the time was forgiveness for and redemption from my sins because of who I was as a person up until that point. I was seeking the mythic "ego death" that promised me that I could truly be loving and find the forgiveness and redemption I was searching for, because I thought that if only I
truly realized I was "God" all along, I could then accomplish these things all at once and simultaneously. I eventually found even this philosophy unsatisfactory when I came to the aforementioned conclusions concerning our great capacity for evil, and also realized that forgiveness can only exist if there are two parties: forgiver and forgiv
ee. Such a thing is impossible if there is only really one being at play at the bottom of reality, and I knew deep down that forgiving oneself (at least, on its own) will never satisfy one's pursuit for redemption that we all inherently take part in whenever pursuing to mend even our own relationships with each other as humans. Further, love would be an illusion in this philosophy too, being that there is only really one party behind and in all of existence if "everything is God." Such an idea would make true altruism a farce, as well. There would be no such thing as real sacrifice for another, because in this worldview, there is no "another."
The French mathematician and Christian philosopher Blaise Pascal said, āManās greatness and wretchedness are so evident that the true religion must necessarily teach both.ā Any philosophy that cannot fully account for human greatness and human depravity at the same time should be abandoned because it misses something obvious about the human condition. The religion of the Bible has a valid explanation for human greatness: people are made in Godās image. Thus we have dignity, value, and capacity for good. The Bible also explains human evil: the image of God has been defaced by sin. Our great capacity gets used for the wrong purposes. Our creativity is placed in the service of evil and our best intentions twisted for selfish gain. Something has gone terribly wrong. While other worldviews unduly demote or promote humanity, the Bible gets the tension just right.
Thus, human nature is puzzling and conflicting. Other worldviewsāboth secular and religiousāstruggle to account for this enigma, and don't offer satisfying solutions to the problem itself. The Bible, however, explains what happened when it tells us that man rebelled against God in the paradise that was prepared for him called "the Garden of Eden." We fell into temptation and estranged ourselves from God by tarnishing the image we were created in, and now are born with a natural proclivity to do evil, despite our best efforts to do good (that is, to do good
consistently).
And so, the Bible promised a solution in the prophet Ezekiel that God will literally change our natural human condition, if we simply choose to humble ourselves before Him in faith to allow for such a change. While as unbelievers our inner disposition towards God is often rebellious, we at least still have the capacity to choose to do the righteous thing in seeking God that He may change us and forgive us if we so let Him. This is one reason why Jesus, (the one who made the fulfillment of Ezekiel's prophecy even possible by his coming, sacrifice, ressurection, and outpouring of the Spirit upon his ascension), said that only faith the size of a mustard seed was required for something so miraculous as moving a mountian to happen, because so little is required from us to allow God to change us into the kind of person He's always wanted us to be, and yet changing the condition of our own heart can be compared to literally moving a mountain if we were to try and do so on our own strength alone. The mustard seed was the smallest of seeds, and yet if one simply planted it and nurtured it, it could become a bush so large that it was comparable to a tree with branches that stretched to the heavens for the very birds of the air to rest on.
It was when I came to these realizations that I prayed to God for the first time again, having been years since I did so, going so far back as to when I was a little child even. I prayed in the dead of night in my room, and asked God to show me the truth and to reveal Himself to me if indeed these things were true, and in an instant I felt His very presence in my room, and my heart was changed. To describe such an experience would be like trying to describe the taste of something to the man born without tastebuds, the color of something to the man born blind, or the sound of something to the man born deaf; there are no words, and it is only something you can know by experiencing it for yourself. Suddenly and all at once, I knew right then and there that Jesus really was who he said he was, that the one true God is the God of the Bible, and that I have been forgiven. As the time of this post, it's been 5 years since then, I'm 23 now, and I'm still walking with God.
My prayer for anyone reading this that may not know God for themselves yet is that one day, you will too.
Back to the topic at hand.
When Adam sinned, we fell under the tyranny of death, corruption, evil heavenly powers, and sin itself. When Jesus came, Jesus was the new and exalted human, the new Adam, through whom humanity could now realize their original destiny that was laid out for them in the Garden of Eden. Because Jesus, being a man, obeyed unto death, he has defeated the powers which held us so long under bondage; we are now promised liberation so long as we simply place our faith in his sacrifice to wash us of our sins and receive the Spirit of God that is also promised to all who exercise this faith.
We often think of āthe gospelā as the part that brings the forgiveness of sins (and of course, that is part of the idea), but āgospelā is the announcement that everything has changed in the coming of Jesus and it leads us to a new kind of living.
The gospel Jesus preached and the gospel the apostle Paul preached were different, in that Jesus preached of a kingdom where God reigns directly and with all His faithful subjects as participants in that reign. The gospel Paul preached was about the exaltation and reign of
Christ, and because Christ reigned, the consummation of the kingdom of God with earth could now finally take place (Col. 1:12-13). This consummation was put on hold during Christ's "millennial" reign, which transpired between his ascension and his return. However, the consummation has come to full fruition since that return.
We will be arguing for some of these claims by pointing out how central the kingdom of God actually was to Jesus' earthly ministry and message, and demonstrate what Jesus taught about how it actually looks like.
The term 'kingdom' appears 53 times in 42 places in Matthew, 17 times in 13 places in Mark, and 41 times in 29 places in Luke. When the 'kingdom' is qualified, Luke always refers to the 'kingdom of God' (32 times) and Mark follows this pattern (14 times). Matthew, on the other hand, prefers the term "kingdom of heaven" (31 times), using the phrase to refer to the same idea "kingdom of God" only four times: 12:28, 19:24, 21:31, 43.
The Gospel of Luke records an event where Jesus responds to the population that lived near Simon Peter's house who believed in him after he had done his miraculous work there, but saw that he was leaving them:
"And when it was day, he departed and went into a desert place: and the people sought him, and came unto him, and stayed him, that he should not depart from them. And he said unto them, I must preach the kingdom of God to other cities also: for therefore [i.e., for this pupose] am I sent." (vss. 42-43)
The Greek word
euangelion is often translated as the word 'gospel.' In the Bible, this word is always used whenever it concerns the announcement of the reign of a new king. And in the New Testament, the Gospels themselves use this word or the phrase "good news" to summarize all of Jesusā teachings. They say he went about āpreaching the gospel [good news] of the kingdom [of God]ā (Matt. 4:23).
Thereās this beautiful poem in the Old Testament, and itās in chapter 52 of the Book of Isaiah. The city of Jerusalem had just been destroyed by Babylon, a great kingdom in the North. Many of the inhabitants of the city have been sent away into exile, but a few remained in the city, and theyāre left wondering, "What happened? Has our God abandoned us?" This was because Jerusalem was supposed to be the city where God would reign over the world to bring peace and blessing to everyone.
Now, Isaiah had been saying that Jerusalemās destruction was a mess of Israelās own making. They had turned away from their God, become corrupt, and so their city and their temple were destroyed. Everything seemed lost. But the poem goes on. There is a watchman on the city walls, and far out on the hills we see a messenger. Heās running towards the city. Heās running and heās shouting, āGood news!ā And Isaiah says, āHow beautiful are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings [news]ā (vs. 7a). The feet are beautiful because theyāre carrying a beautiful message. And whatās the message? That despite Jerusalemās destruction, Israelās God still reigns as king, and that God's presence is going to one day return with His city, take up His throne, and bring peace. And the watchmen sing for joy because of the good news that their God still reigns (vs. 10).
Jesus saw himself as the messenger bringing the news that God reigns. Jesus also claimed to be the Son of man. This was Jesus' favorite self-designation, being used some 80 times in the Gospels. Notice, not just
a son of man, but
the Son of Man. Jesus was directing our attention to a vision described by the prophet Daniel:
"I saw in the night visions, and, behold, one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days, and they brought him near before him. And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should serve him:"-Daniel 7:13-14a
At Jesus' trial, the Jewish high priest accused Jesus: "Art thou the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed [God]?" His answer left no room for doubt. "I am: and ye shall see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven." (Mark 14:61-62). Because Jesus' was rejected and killed for threatening the power the religious authorities had over the people, the consummation of God's kingdom with earth had been put on hold until all of Christ's enemies would be put under his feet after his ressurection and ascension.
But again, what
is the kingdom of God? What does it look like
exactly?
Well, the way that Jesus described Godās reign surprised everybody. I mean, think about it. A powerful, successful kingdom needs to be strong, able to impose its will, and able to defeat its enemies in physical combat. But Jesus said the greatest person in Godās kingdom was the weakest, the one who loves and who serves the poor (Matt. 23:11-12). He said you live under Godās reign when you respond to evil by loving your enemies, and forgiving them, and seeking peace (Matt. 5). To us, this is an upside-down kingdom. But to God, it's right-side up. This was what God had originally planned for us: a kingdom where
God reigns in our hearts. "Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God."-John 3:3
Jesus was being quite literal here. You canāt
see the kingdom until youāre born again and have the life of that kingdom. When youāre born again, you start 'seeing' differently. You see what others donāt see, you hear what others donāt hear, you know what others donāt know. And yet you may be physically in the same earthly location as they.
The kingdom of God is the totality of Godās influence that covers the world and heaven. Itās everywhere, but its
manifestation isnāt everywhere. It manifests on earth wherever there are those who are born again and live as if God reigns in their hearts.
Before Jesus, John the Baptist announced to all people, āThe kingdom of heaven is at hand!ā (Matt. 3:1-2), as he saw a soon coming kingdom of God that would be ushered in by the Messiah. Notice that John the Baptist didnāt say that something ālikeā the kingdom would come and he didnāt say that the real kingdom might be thousands of years away. He said over and over that THE kingdom was at hand! Do you believe him? Did God inspire him to give a clear and accurate message or a mistaken one? If we dare to believe him, things might become surprisingly clear, simple and exceedingly optimistic.
"Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven."-Matthew 6:10
Jesus taught his followers of his generation to pray that God's kingdom come and that His will be done
in earth, as it is in heaven. Why pray for something that will just inevitably come by force,
unless it was actually through our willing participation? That is, unless God's will is carried out through us "in earth, as it is in heaven"?
"Now after that John was put in prison, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel."-Mark 1:14-15
It's very telling that these are the very first words the Gospel of Mark chooses to record Jesus as saying.
The kingdom is NOT something to wait for. Jesus says the kingdom is NOT something visible, and it is NOT something in the sky. The Kingdom Jesus taught is a spiritual reality that comes into the world
through us. Considering that Jesus even said the kingdom was in and among the Pharisees in Luke 17, which seems almost offensive to consider, perhaps it is like a spiritual seed that has been planted inside each of us, and that activating faith in God makes it grow.
"Then said he, Unto what is the kingdom of God like? and whereunto shall I resemble it? It is like a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and cast into his garden; and it grew, and waxed a great tree; and the fowls of the air lodged in the branches of it."-Luke 13:18-19
Jesus talked about the kingdom as if it would be a
present reality, yet one that was
growing in the world like a
seed grows into a tree.
"And again he said, Whereunto shall I liken the kingdom of God? It is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three measures of meal, till the whole was leavened."-Luke 13:20-21
To Jesus, the kingdom was something
growing in us like yeast through dough, increasing in effectiveness.
"For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost."-Romans 14:17
"For the kingdom of God is not in word, but in power."-1 Corinthians 4:20
Paul says the kingdom isnāt something you taste or touch like physical food. Itās not even saying the right words. But rather the kingdom comes in the realities of
righteousness, peace, joy and
power that flavor our lives when we live empowered by the Spirit of God and God's Spirit in us.
Since Jesus the Messiah returned only 40 years after his earthly ministry, putting all enemies under his feet, the complete consummation of earth with the kingdom of heaven has finally taken place.
The kingdom of God has come, and it continues to come through us as believers. It makes progress like light shining into the world and dispelling the darkness.
"Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven."-Matthew 5:14-16
Most Preterists affirm that we are in the kingdom of God now. That is, we believe that through faith in Jesus Christ's atonement we enter into the kingdom of God, which is spiritual. We speak of the spiritual nature of the kingdom. We speak of God dwelling with men. We affirm Godās presence with us. We even affirm that we are in the new heavens and new earth. But the question remains: If we have all of this now, how does this translate into a proper view of āthe afterlifeā? (Hereafter this term will refer to consciousness and the new body after physical expiration of
this body in this mortal realm.) In other words, how does this translate into a hopeful view of the afterlife?
We must dispel a dismal doctrine floating around that this is all there is. There are some Preterists who teach that we are in the kingdom in the here and now, but when we physically expire it is all over. We simply turn to dust. What follows will prove this idea to be dreadfully wrong. This will be evident not so much by proving what we will not have after our body dies; rather, it will be evident by proving that
what we have now is eternally enduring, because we have immortality. āHe who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?ā Jesus said this to Martha after her brother Lazarus had physically died. She was a real woman who had a real conscience and a real life experience. Lazarus was physically dead; therefore we must take this into consideration as we try to make sense of Jesusā subsequent words:
"Jesus saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again. Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day. Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?"-John 11:23-26
The Jews obviously believed in a resurrection of the dead. Martha did too. But Jesus tells her that he is the resurrection and the life. However, he doesnāt stop there. He begins to both qualify and quantify this life: āHe that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he liveā (vs. 25b). At this point we might still infer from his words that he is referring to physical life, but his next words contradict that idea: āAnd whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never dieā (vs. 26a). Letās paraphrase his words to elucidate his view of resurrection: āI am the spiritual resurrection and life. Your brother has died physically, but he will rise with a ābetter resurrectionā (Heb. 11:35). He who believes in me, though he were physically dead like Lazarus, yet shall he spiritually live. And he who is presently physically living shall never die spiritually.ā Some try to convolute this text by inferring that Christ was speaking of two resurrections. But his statement that he is
the resurrection and the life prohibits that concept. Finally, he is obviously not stating that he who lives and believes in Christ will not
physically die. If this were his meaning, then we would have to conclude that no one ever truly believed in him, for all of us still physically die; or we would have to conclude that he was mistaken or was lying, neither of which is an option within the parameters of the Biblical faith.
Obviously those who question this idea will ask questions like, āSo this is heaven?ā By āthisā their minds usually gravitate back to what they see, hear, and feel and not to what the Scripture says. They fail to make a distinction between the physical realm and the spiritual realm. We must remind them that even they will confess that God dwells in their hearts. They would never say that this is a physical dwelling place. In fact they will gladly tell us that our hearts are the spiritual dwelling place of God, a fact with which we would agree. So it should not seem a strange thing that all the blessings mentioned in Revelation chapters 21 and 22 are bound up in the affirmation that God dwells in our hearts, presently. God does not cease to dwell in our hearts in the afterlife. He merely continues to live out His presence with us both here and hereafter.

2024.05.21 10:50 Yurii_S_Kh āMay we be that kind of crazyā. Conversation with Protopresbyter Joseph Dzagoev about Orthodoxy on the Kolyma peninsula
| Protopresbyter Joseph Dzagoev, a priest in the Protection monastery in Magadan, tells about the spiritual life in his city. He talks about well-worn stereotypes, āordinaryā Christian miracles, and how we should never get tired of trusting the Lord. Trinity Cathedral in Magadan The Russian antimension Before 1989, our city was lacking not only a monastery; we didnāt have a single church. Before the Bolshevik persecutions against religion, there were churches, chapels and veneration crosses at various neighboring villages, on the coast, and in Cossack settlements. It wasnāt till the very end of the twentieth century when the persecution of the Christian faith finally officially stopped, and with the blessing of the Bishop of Khabarovsk, the very first Orthodox community was formed here. The first services were held in a private residence. This is where the Protection Monastery was later founded. Although itās true that our city never even had a chance to have a church, because it started its life, so to speak, as a local GULAG camp in the early 1930s. Thatās why any church was out of the question. We arenāt talking about the times of the Russian Empire, when churches were everywhere, and everyone, including exiles, convicts and other prisoners, always had the opportunity to attend a church service. But on the other hand, even if we didnāt have a physical church, it doesnāt mean that we had no Christians here. We have every reason to call both Solovki and Magadan and their surrounding territories an enormous Russian antimension spread under the open sky. How many new martyrs and confessors suffered here in very recent times! One of the most revered local saints is the Venerable Confessor Andronik (Lukash), one of the elders of Glinsk Hermitage, whose relics rest in our Holy Trinity Cathedral. But there are many more saints like himāboth those we know, and those known only to God. So, the place you stand is holy ground. I think we should know more about the holiness of this land. Well-worn stereotypes ā Fr. Joseph, how can we understand the salvific value of sufferings? How do we benefit from them if viewed from the Christian perspective? After all, not everyone who suffered here at Kolyma suffered for Christās sake. If we read the works of Varlam Shalamov1āit gives you jitters and you even can grow despondent. āI have to say right away that neither I, nor many of the inhabitants of our region, are fans of Varlam Tikhonovich's literary work. You canāt find a glimpse of light in his writing. Besides, the locals say that not everything that he wrote is truthful. But let's leave Shalamov in peace, God rest his soul. As for the meaning and nature of suffering, in my opinion, there were prisoners (and there are still someāI have been conducting prison pastoral care since 1998 in our region, so I can talk to the prisoners) who truly suffered for the truth, for Christās sake, and for their loyalty to Him. But there were also some (moreover, many) who endured the hardship of imprisonment because, as many of them admit, they have been beneficial to them. They redeem from āotherā sins for which they probably havenāt been āofficiallyā convicted. These people tell me: āItās better that I suffer here and now instead of later, in the afterlife.ā I think this speaks of the humility cultivated in them. I used to meet real Christians behind bars, so we shouldnāt suppose that Kolyma is only for hardened thugs. But cultivating sufferingāno, I will not do that. Letās remember the words of the Apostle Peter: But let none of you suffer as a murderer, or as a thief, or as an evildoer, or as a busybody in other men's matters (1 Peter 4:15). But overall I, and the overwhelming majority of residents of Kolyma region, have already gotten quite tired of this reference, the stereotype regarding our landāthat Magadan is all about the prisons, camps, tough guys in padded jackets with an inmate number, barbed wire, and so forth. It still works somehow as a gimmick for tourists, but our land has so much more and it can surprise in a good way by bring joy to someone āfrom the mainland.ā Actually, have you noticed that we even say, āfrom the mainlandā, despite the fact that Magadan is actually also a mainland city, while Yakutsk is only 2000 kilometers away from us? ā Aha, right, ājustā a mere couple of thousand kilometersāno big deal! āBut it is so beautiful, isnāt it? The embankment ā That's true. The sea knolls, the sea, your Ńhurches, the embankment, the central streets and museumsāit's a pleasure to walk around! āSo, we don't live in the dreary past, nor do we relish the allure of prison lifeāwe have other things to do and something and someone to pray about. We have much to do, and thatās good. Because you canāt, after all, rush around the country āseeking greener pasturesā. It is better to get comfortable in your own clean, spacious, well stocked and hospitable home. But youāll obtain this home only when you, and not some āfairy-tale do-gooder,ā take care of it yourself. Besides, that āfairy-tale do-gooderā actually does offer support; we receive sizable support from the federal budget. And no, itās not our thing to sit here whining and waiting for better times, unwilling to lift a finger to make those better times come. The fruits of a recent sermon and ābirth pangsā of the Apostle Paul But let us return to the idea of the Russian antimension spread under the open sky. It seems to me that the whole of Russia can serve as such antimension, since persecutions happened all over Russia. So many churches and monasteries were destroyed! I think, we, the Christians of today, canāt come even close to Holy Russia of that time. In the Protection monastery ā And in qualitative terms? āOn the one hand, I can dwell on the problems like an old manāwhere our young generation (including priests) is heading, that they are the victims of the āupbringingā of the 1990s, that the former generations were āwarriors, far better than you,ā 2 āunlike the current crop of youth,ā and to some extent I would probably be right. On the other hand, as a modern-day priest, I see something joyful happening before my own eyesāI wouldnātā say holy, I should be careful hereābut examples that speak of a worthy and often miraculous Christian life. Letās take our Protection Monastery, for example. As I already said, it was founded around a house of worship with the blessing of Bishop Gabriel of Khabarovsk as far back as 1992. There was a community there already, but they were able to obtain their own building, albeit a small and remote one, only in the 1990s. Vladyka used to visit us here several times a year, and this community grew larger over time. Later the Magadan diocese was formed, so when Vladyka Arkady came here together with the monks, they began to travel all over Kolyma as missionaries, visiting every village and hamlet, baptizing, serving, and having conversations. Thatās how the life of the Church has gradually settled here. Much later, our monastery was built, and it currently has four elderly nuns headed by Matushka Nadezhda, the abbess. ā It turns out that everyone has different gifts. One person is man of prayer, another is a master craftsman, and yet another one is an excellent organizer. āI think the most difficult thing is to have only just begun the spiritual lifeāconsidering those ābirth pangsā of the Apostle Paul. But later on, there comes a moment of great joy when you see that your community is growing in Christ. Thanks to Bishop Arkadyās labors, we were able to accomplish very much Above all, he succeeded in changing the attitude of the regional and city authorities towards the Church. And not just of the authorities, but also of our local people. Formerly, believers were called ārelics of the pastā and āpariahs,ā despicable and worthless people with āissues,ā who were crazy in the head. Now, largely thanks to missionary work, people have realized that first of all, Christ is risen, and secondly, His Resurrection directly affects each and every one of us. Do you choose to languish in the darkness of eternal complaints and death? Wouldnāt it be better to be joyful and work alongside Christ and His disciples? Thatās where our choice is. It is, of course, a serious questionāto what extent we sinners are worthy disciples of the Lord. But our failures donāt give us the right to forsake God, right? Judging from my own experience, I know how perplexed people were when we witnessed the faith. I remember how in the 1990s, when I was still working at a mining plant (I am a mine foreman by education), there was a lot of theft. And when someone made me an offer to āstealā at work, I replied that I was a Christian and I would not steal. They stared at me and kept looking at me for a long time as if I were insane. However, at any time, to follow Christ was always seen by the fallen world as a diseaseāwe are not right in the head if we are Christians. God willing, may we be that kind of crazy. Kolyma paradoxes and the miracles of Magadan Protopresbyter Joseph Dzagoev with the patients of residential care facility āThe irony is that the site of the present-day Holy Trinity Cathedral in Magadan formerly housed the 1st administrative office of Dalstroy, the very consortium that brought workers, or rather slaves, to the GULAG. Later on, they decided to build the House of Soviets there, a huge one by local standards, around fourteen stories tall. But they never finished it; the structure cracked and it was impossible to commission it. That unfinished construction site has seen it all: drunken brawls, the stench of beer, teenagers committing suicideā¦ It was horrible. But now it is the site of our magnificent Trinity Cathedral. ā Wouldnāt it be wonderful if our hearts were also transformed? āThat is harder to achieve, of course. Especially now, when the war is going on, and when our boys return after witnessing all that death. What are we to do with them? God willing, some of them will find their way to the church, But what about the rest? After the Great Patriotic War, career military people were sent to work hereāstraight from active duty in the army, they became the camp guards. They say there was an unheard level of drunkenness here... I don't know what will happen now. We pray that we can overcome the ordeal that befell our military men and their families. Yes, and more about the sick. Our monastery is on good and friendly terms with the staff at the psychoneurological residential care facility. Many patients and their staff come to us, and we also visit them. We hold services, we meet and talk to people, comforting them to the best of our abilities. Here is what I want to say: According to information from the residential facilityās staff, the vast majority of their patients (and itās something like ninety percent!) are the children of drug addicts and alcoholics. And there are about four hundred people residing there! This is the sad part. Now about the miracles so common for Christians. Have you noticed one young man at the serviceāa kind and caring one, who is smiling and willing to help everyone? This is our Sasha, and he also resides there. He came a long time ago, when the Protection Monastery had just been founded. Well, he sort of came, but he couldnāt say a wordāhe could only mumble something unintelligibly. Well, he kept mumbling something while we prayed together with him. All churches and communities have such people, so itās not surprising. But one day we came to the morning service and saw our Sasha standing in front of the icon of the Mother of God, clearly reciting, āRejoice O Virgin Mother of God.ā Not only was he reciting it, but so eloquently that any pious church reader would be jealous! We stood there in amazement. Once he finished praying, we came closer. āSasha, dearest, how did you learn to read, how do you know the words?ā He answered so calmly but matter-of-factly: āThis Auntie taught me!ā and pointed to the icon of the Mother of God. We could only stand there in silence and continue praying. And thatās what we do! As for Sasha, he continues to come, almost never missing a service. He also helps around the monastery and assists at our meetings in his residential care facility. https://preview.redd.it/9thrbzfntq1d1.png?width=700&format=png&auto=webp&s=5aad11cd96407fb242d5bfdcc656d009d4e493c9 So, we do have miracles, we canāt do without them. On the one hand, those miracles are truly our great support on our path to God. On the other hand, they give us a wonderful opportunity to pause and think that Christ does not work miracles without reason or purposeāany real miracle has its own meaning, and we always see God's love in it. We also have to work hard, even if we are spiritual invalids. We can still progress towards Heaven. If we ourselves donāt make an effort, of course there wonāt be miracles! So I wish for us all to keeping working. And one more thing: If you ever happen to be in Kolyma, you are cordially invited to visit us! Peter Davydov spoke with Protopresbyter Joseph Dzagoev 1 Varlam Shalamov (June 18, 1907āJanuary 17, 1982, was a poet and writer who spent much of the period from 1937 to 1951 imprisoned in forced-labor camps in the Arctic region of Kolyma, due in part to his support of Leon Trotsky and praise of writer Ivan Bunin. Wala akong masabi sa sobrang good provider ng asawa ko. Kahit ano, kahit kailan, binibigay. Wants, needs, anything.
Pero hindi lang financial support kailangan ko.
Is it too much to ask na kailangan ko din ng emotional support? He admits that he is not emotionally strong and stable. He is easily triggered, short-tempered.
Kaya kapag may issues ako, in the end ako parin mali. Kahit gusto ko lang naman maging vocal sa feelings ko, gusto ko rin ma-validate minsan, ang ending parang need namin pagtalunan, heās so defensive.

2024.05.21 05:53 freemaxbwaves The Secret Subliminal War Between Kendrick Lamar and Drake
| I donāt think people realize that Drake and Kendrick have been having a back and forth in their songs since before "First Person Shooter." Yes, we all know theyāve been sending subliminals to each other for over a decade and have been beefing for a while now, but since "DAMN.," no one has really paid attention to the subliminals in their music, and theyāve been directly responding to each other in songs for a while now. Hereās some backstory on where I think this modern beef started. On March 5, 2021, Drake released the song "Whatās Next." The song was originally supposed to have Baby Keem on it, but his verse was left off, and it was just Drake on the song. Iām just going to leave this information here because it might play into the later disses. Family Ties August 27, 2021 Where I think the disses really start is on "Family Ties" with Kendrick Lamar. This song is the first official collaboration between Keem and Kendrick. It comes five months after Whatās Next. In Kendrickās verse, he states that heās: "Smokin' on your top five tonight, tonight Yeah, I'm smokin' on your, what's his name, tonight, tonight." This could be aimed at anybody in the game, but I think itās directly targeted towards Drake based on the āwhatās his name,ā since Drake and Rihanna have a song called āWhatās My Name.ā Kendrick is saying heās smoking on Drake. Throughout Kendrickās verse, he starts calling himself the GOAT and explains why heās been absent in the game before this. At the end of the track, Baby Keem says: "Number two DM'ing my bitch That's cool, I don't ask why." "Number two" here refers to Drake, as number one would be Kendrick Lamar. Drake is known for DMing peopleās girls and stuff like that; Baby Keem says Drake is DMing his girl and is confused. Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers https://preview.redd.it/f8c3x1uhbp1d1.png?width=300&format=png&auto=webp&s=042914e480929880962297dff8e7f1c585752c02 Itās been about a year since "Family Ties," and Kendrick releases his next studio album in five years. The album is supposed to address his demons and is about his growth and maturity through therapy. I think there are some subliminal on here towards Drake. Father Time This entire track is Kendrick addressing the issue of parenthood, specifically fatherhood, and the toxic nature of present and absent fathers due to the toxic masculinity that is passed through generations. Itās interesting that this is the track where Kendrick directly mentions Drake's name since we know later on Kendrick would call Drake a bad/absent father and call his father absent as well. "When Kanye got back with Drake, I was slightly confused Guess I'm not mature as I think, got some healin' to do." Kanye and Drake got back together for the Larry Hoover concert, and here Kendrick is confused about why Kanye āmade upā with Drake. He realized heās not as mature as he thinks and has some healing to do because he wouldnāt get back with Drake like Kanye did. Rich Spirit I think "Rich Spirit" might be the real warning shot towards Drake. I also think this is a direct reply to "Toosie Slide." The entire "Rich Spirit" video is him alone in his house, away from fame and society. There are a lot of lines here that, in retrospect, seem to be Kendrick telling Drake what a real āRich Spiritā is. For example: "Takin' my baby to school, then I pray for her." This is something Kendrick directly attacks Drake for in his diss tracks. "And celebrity do not mean integrity, you fool." Kendrick is saying that celebrity does not equal integrity. He also uses this same angle in his diss tracks later on. "Stop playin' with me 'fore I turn you to a song (Yeah) Stop playin' with me 'fore I turn you to a song (Ooh)." This is pretty obvious. Kendrick is telling Drake to stop playing with him before he turns him into a song (diss track) like he did with "Not Like Us." Hereās where I think it gets even more obvious: "Ayy, clout chasing hell of a disease, brother I'm fasting four days out the week, brother I pray to God that you realize the entourage is dead I pray to God that you not lackin' when you off the meds I pray to God she knows them Cabo trips don't last forever Bet she argues with her momma, go and get them kids." Everything Kendrick says here is exactly what he says to Drake in his diss tracks. He mentions meds, his entourage is against him, calls him out for his trips to islands, and calls him a clout chaser. This is clearly referencing Drake. These lines directly reference J Prince, like he does in "Euphoria": "I pray to God you actually pray when somebody dies Thoughts and prayers, way better off timelines False claimin' not cute, I'm mortified The new Earth in hot pursuit, two-hundred lives." He says the exact same thing to J Prince in "Euphoria." He also says: āI would never live my life on the computer IG'll get you life for a chikabooya More power to ya, love 'em from a distance Why you always in the mirror more than the bitches?ā Drake is known for his antics online and Instagram captions/Internet culture. This oneās also pretty obvious. Honestly, Nevermind https://preview.redd.it/hhptm12nbp1d1.png?width=300&format=png&auto=webp&s=87ccec540b1538faa76f59c155994690808250cc Drake responds to Kendrick on his album "Honestly, Nevermind." Whatās important to realize here is that this album dropped on Kendrickās birthday. The entire album is club-inspired music and was something people did not expect, and he dropped it on Kendrickās birthday on purpose. It was to showcase to Kendrick that he can make music that Kendrick couldnāt. The entire album is club-inspired music except for the last track āStickyā with 21 Savage. On this track, Drake states: "Couple hits, now you brave, boy You n**** better behave (What) All that pumpin' up your chest (What) All that talk about the best (What) You know how sticky it gets." Heās telling Kendrick to behave and stop talking about how heās the best like he did on "Family Ties." Now whatās very interesting is that Kendrick & Baby Keem directly respond to this track on "The Hillbillies." I donāt think people realize that "The Hillbillies" is a direct response to this. But before The Hillbillies was the "America Has a Problem" remix with BeyoncĆ©. This entire verse is clearly a Drake diss. America Has a Problem Remix https://preview.redd.it/41ncfnysbp1d1.png?width=300&format=png&auto=webp&s=4f1ba1948e5a70de84ac6b88fea298655a8ab95f "Geeked up, choosy love, well, they chose violence Universal, please don't play possum I'm a businessman doin' as follows Truthfully, I be lyin' in my rap song 'Cause I always fail to mention I'd slap homie His career didn't come with no life insurance Hope his day-one fans got some facts on him." He calls out Universal (UMG), saying heās just a businessman doing as he chooses. He states that heās lying in songs because he fails to mention heāll slap somebody. He states that this person's career didnāt come with life insurance and hopes his day-one fans have some facts on him. Heās clearly referring to Drake here. "Them diamonds don't be fly, they all CGI You better get it off your chest like breast reduction If she stressed over you, she stressed for nothin'." In these lines, he calls Drake's diamonds fake and states that Drake should get it off his chest like breast reduction. Heās mocking his surgery yet again. Then the āif she stressed over you, she stressed for nothingā is a subliminal towards Drakeās latest album before this track, "Her Loss," stating that itās not her loss since if sheās stressed over Drake, she isnāt stressed for anything. Next, he says: "Even AI gotta practice clonin' Kendrick The double entendre, the encore remnants I bop like ten men, the opps need ten men." During the time when this track came out, there was AI Drake music blowing up. Kendrick is saying that even AI needs to practice to clone him, using a double entendre to imply heās unmatched. He is saying the opps āneed ten menā aka the ghostwriters, he is calling Drake easily replaceable. Now onto The Hillbillies. The Hillbillies https://preview.redd.it/5ugsqc2wbp1d1.png?width=300&format=png&auto=webp&s=fac50b242aec856fea19f304ff08264c94d460c9 "The Hillbillies" was released on May 30, 2023. The entire track is completely different from the music that Kendrick normally makes. Itās a track where heās flexing, and itās over a club-inspired beat and flow. Baby Keem even called it a āStickyā remix. So this track is basically Kendrick saying that he can do what Drake did on "Honestly, Nevermind," but better. First, letās look at the title of the track. It is called āThe Hillbillies.ā On "Sticky," Drake says that heās: "King of the hill, you know it's a steep one." Drake calls himself the king of the hill, Kendrick & Keem call themselves the Hillbillies, you get it. Now letās look at some lines in the track: "Messi, get them girls off the stage, 'cause somebody's gonna get taken Somebody's gonna invade on a one-on-one conversation I'm ducked off from the world, I'm immersed in the PlayStation." This is a direct response to "Sticky" when Drake says: "Ayo Eric, bring them girls to the stage 'Cause somebody's getting paid." Throughout this entire track, Kendrick and Keem are mocking Drake and his flow on "Sticky," showcasing they can do anything he can do and better. Theyāre rapping about the things heāll rap about. Also what I find interesting about the music video is that they have Tyler in it and announce that they will be headlining Camp Flog Gnaw in the video, where Drake famously got booed off stage. Could be a reach but still. In July a month after this track, Drake on stage during his tour said āhe is not like those rappers who disappear for 4 or 5 yearsā. So another subliminal towards Kendrick. Meltdown https://preview.redd.it/spcuz8zybp1d1.png?width=300&format=png&auto=webp&s=8d636950b1706368297a514c110e1a4351f06ded Drake responds to the disses on "Meltdown," which was released two months later on Travis Scottās album. While this verse is mainly about Kanye/Pusha, I also think it can relate to Kendrick as well. "I love to fuck on a regular bitch Famous hoes lame, but they stay on my dick Heard your new joint, it's embarrassing, shit." On "Hillbillies," Kendrick/Keem rap about wanting a regular girl instead of a famous girl, and on "Meltdown," Drake says the same thing, also calling their new stuff embarrassing. "Your bodyguard put in some work on a fluke Now you wanna go and inherit that shit Don't talk to the boy 'bout comparisons, shit Or come to the boy on some arrogant shit." More bodyguards talk, and heās telling people not to compare him to anybody. We all know who he really means. āI melt down the chains that I bought from yo' boss Give a fuck about all of that heritage shit.ā Kendrick directly responds to this, saying he inherited the beef from Pharrell since Drake was disrespecting him. Now hereās where I think it gets obvious. On the second verse, Travis says: "The boy going Lionel Messi, I go Tom Brady (Woo)." In the track "The Hillbillies," Keem is calling Kendrick Messi and himself Neymar. Now in this track, which comes out two months later, Drake is comparing himself to Messi. Also he says in this song "You act like you love this American shit, but really the truth is you scared of the 6" which could be a response to the title "America Has a Problem", this might be a reach though. First Person Shooter https://preview.redd.it/emn9lgd2cp1d1.png?width=300&format=png&auto=webp&s=fc52eeee5b1834f392c657c306dff32dab17746a After "Meltdown," we get "First Person Shooter," which we all know ignited this beef even further. I have a theory about this track, though. I believe that Drake originally sent Kendrick the track to hop on, but Kendrick denied the feature request. I think the original "First Person Shooter" was going to feature Drake, Cole, and Kendrick rapping over the first beat of the song. I believe the beat switch was made after Kendrick denied the feature request, and Drake added it later. This is why Kendrick says on his diss tracks: "Surprised you sent that feature request, you know we got some shit to address" and "Did Cole foul, I donāt know why you still pretending." Drake wanted to squash the subliminal beef he had with Kendrick with the feature request, and when Kendrick denied it, he thought it was real beef. Look at the second half of "FPS": "My youngins richer than you rappers and they all stream I really hate that you been sellin' them some false dreams Man, if your pub was up for sale, I buy the whole thing Will they ever give me flowers? Well, of course not They don't wanna have that talk, 'cause it's a sore spot They know The Boy, the one they gotta boycott I told Jimmy Jam I use a GRAMMY as a door stop." Drake gets way more aggressive in the second half of the track and states that Kendrick is selling people false dreams, he is broke, they won't give him his flowers, he is at the top, and that he doesn't care about GRAMMYs (which is what Drake mocks Kendrick for in "Family Matters"). Then he says: "What the fuck, bro? I'm one away from Michael N***, beat it, n****, beat it, what?" He compares himself to Michael Jackson and even says he will beat his record, which Kendrick directly responds to in "Like That." At the end of the track, Drake says: "Don't even pay me back on none of them favors, I don't need it." We know that Drake feels like he put on Kendrick and that Kendrick would be nowhere without him, so he rubs that in his face. This verse is where I think Kendrick really took it as a threat rather than just the big three line. That was a part of it, but I think this is what really set Kendrick off. Also interestingly in this video Drake recreates the Messi/Ronaldo picture with J. Cole and compares himself to Messi AGAIN. Another thing, in the second verse Drake says: āI click the trigger on the stick like a high beamā So in Like That when Kendrick says āif he walk around with that stick, it aināt Andre 3kā it could be reffering to this line as well since that track is a direct response to this song. At first most people thought the stick line was about Cole but we know Kendrick calls out Drake for acting tough later on, so it could be a response to this line as well. Red Button https://preview.redd.it/y8zhrmr5cp1d1.png?width=300&format=png&auto=webp&s=6d40f3c901c2afecd20743066c736c3f29e2a6ba A month after this track, Drake releases āRed Buttonā on "Scary Hours 3," and I also think this is about Kendrick Lamar (and Kanye, but we are focusing on Dot here). This entire track, Drake is warning people that if he presses his red button, it will be over for certain people. This red button thing obviously refers to Kendrick since during their diss tracks, Drake was constantly talking about pushing the red button and posting images of red buttons. āN**** think it's sweet, but I am not a diabetic patient No, I will start blackin' over here like it's segregation I will fuckin' double-cross you n**** like it's meditation I'll give you a hard pill to swallow, this your medication I will fuckin' pop up on your ass like a revelation I could tell you better than I show you, this a demonstration I will fuckin' leave you in the dirt like some vegetation Chemicals is mixin' in my brain and killin' hesitation I will fuckin' force a few shots like a vaccination I'll get to you ten years from now like procrastination I'll fuckin' find out wherever y'all are celebratin' Pull up, park my Phantom on the curb like I'm Larry David And then we'll see who's really crazyā I have a feeling this is about Kendrick specifically based on the words heās choosing to talk about, like segregation and procrastination. Things that he makes fun of Kendrick for in his latest disses. After this we know what happens, Kendrick responds on Like That and the beef really ignites with the diss tracks coming out. submitted by freemaxbwaves to KendrickLamar [link] [comments] |

2024.05.21 04:54 apageinthestacks r/Fantasy Bingo - Ursula K. Le Guin Edition!
| A Bingo card made entirely from titles by Ursula K. Le Guin! Some quick background: A little over a year ago I decided I would read everything I hadnāt yet read by Ursula K. Le Guin, and in order of publish date. This includes her novels; her story, essay, and poetry collections; childrenās and picture books; chapbooks; and more. Literally everything I could identify that she published, I wanted to include it -- over 100 pieces of writing in total! Iāve been doing it a little slowly so I'm still going strong, but I am bittersweetly nearing the end. Next up on my list is Lavinia , and I am incredibly excited to read her last novel. I havenāt been updating it as much as Iād like, but if youāre interested in the list Iām reading through you can find it here. Anyway, since Iāve spent more than a year completely immersed in Le Guinās work, after this yearās Bingo card came out I began to notice how well some of her books fit the themes, so then I decided to take it a little further and create a Bingo card exclusively with her work. š I know this wouldn't actually be acceptable, since you can't use an author more than once, but I thought it'd be fun to show how expansive her bibliography is. So, without further ado: https://preview.redd.it/9ytumeo01p1d1.png?width=1077&format=png&auto=webp&s=303c8774442b2fed120aecb0cf03f0461bae1b5c My main focus was on having no repeats (although I still ended up having one, unfortunatelyāmaybe someone can remind me of a book Iāve missed that also fits for either Dark Academia or Eldritch Creatures), so other books may be a better fit than the ones Iāve chosen for individual themes. But, hopefully this will inspire someone to pick up one of Le Guinās works for a Bingo square this year. š The squares/justification: First in a Series: Orsinian Tales Of course A Wizard of Earthsea and Rocannon's World also fit. Orsinian Tales is a short story collection set in a fictional European country. Her novel Malafrena follows and is also in this setting. Alliterative Title: The Word for World is Forest Also fits: The Water is Wide, though itās just a short story. Under the Surface: The Tombs of Atuan Probably my second favorite Earthsea novel, or maybe tied with Tehanu, and much of it takes place in the titular tombs, underground. Criminals: Malafrena Minor spoilers, but the main character gets arrested for political sedition. Also, in the novella Old Music and the Slave Women the main character also gets arrested. Dreams: The Lathe of Heaven The main characterās dreams can alter reality. Written somewhat as a tribute to Philip K. Dick, this is a great choice if youāre a fan of his work. Entitled Animals: The Eye of the Heron Various short stories also fit, as well as the collection Buffalo Gals and Other Animal Presences. Bards: Gifts The story partially centers on the main characterās desire to be a storyteller and his journey. The second book, Voices, perhaps would fit this even stronger, but Iām using it for another square. Prologues and Epilogues: Worlds of Exile and Illusion The short story āSemleyās Necklaceā is the prologue to Rocannon's World, or in the recent Tor Essentials reissue it appears simply as āThe Necklaceā Self-Published or Indie Publisher: Cheek by Jowl, from Aqueduct Press Depending on your definition, thereās actually a fair amount of Le Guinās work thatās only been indie-published. She has a few titles through PM Press, Tin House, and others. Romantasy: The Beginning Place Probably would be considered a very light-on-the-romance romantasy, but itās probably her book with the most romance, besides Very Far Away from Anywhere Else which isnāt speculative at all. Dark Academia: A Wizard of Earthsea I donāt know how well this fits the aesthetic. I could argue both ways, so Iāll say it does. š The wizard school is the main part of the book, and I think this is the most academically-inclined of her books. T he Dispossessed may slightly fit, but itās more that the main character is an academic rather than the book centering on academia, if that distinction makes sense. Multi-POV: Always Coming Home Set up as a sort of collection of works found in the future about a society in the (future timeās) distant past (but our future). Features several stories with different POVs. Searoad also works for this. Published in 2024: Collected Poems, from Library of America. So this one is possibly cheating. While most of this is a reprint, there are 68 previously-uncollected poems, so it at least partially counts! š
And some of her poems are SFF. Character with a Disability: Voices One of the main characters is physically disabled from torture he endured before the book takes place. Published in the 1990s: A Fisherman of the Inland Sea Books that also fit: Tehanu, Four Ways to Forgiveness, Unlocking the Air and Other Stories, two Catwings books, three poetry collections, and many novellas, short stories, etc. Orcs, Trolls, and Goblins: A Ride on the Red Mareās Back In this charming picture book the main character comes across a troll. Space Opera: Paradises Lost A novella that takes place on a generation ship. Author of Color: Selected Poems of Gabriela Mistral, translated and with commentary by Le Guin. One thing thatās been fun about my read-through of Le Guin is being absolutely delighted by her translations. Not only because I get to discover authors I otherwise wouldnāt, as well as discover some of her own favorites, but because of what it reflects on Le Guin. She wasnāt fluent in Spanish but loved this poetry so much she took the time to meticulously translate the poems, getting input from friends and acquaintances. Anyway, many of these poems are speculative and I loved Le Guinās commentary. Survival: The Farthest Shore Another one thatās cheating a bit, because only a small portion of the novel is focused on survival but it is a rather memorable part. Judge a Book By Its Cover: The Language of the Night This one is entirely subjective of course, and I probably wouldāve used The Left Hand of Darkness if I wasnāt using it for another square, but I do absolutely love the new cover this reissue got. And itās a fantastic book of nonfiction on SF&F! Set in a Small Town: Searoad This entire novel/mosaic of stories takes place in a small coastal town. Five SFF Short Stories: The Windās Twelve Quarters Le Guin has over a hundred short stories and nearly a dozen collections to choose from, but I chose this one because it has my favorite short story of hers: āThe Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas.ā Eldritch Creatures: A Wizard of Earthsea Slight spoilers: hereās an uncanny/mysterious/etc. shadow being that is a main antagonist and is, at least initially, seemingly beyond mortal understanding. Reference Materials: Tales from Earthsea In addition to containing several short stories set in Earthsea, thereās also a map and āA Description of Earthseaā that has various reference materials about the cultures, languages, etc. of Earthsea. Always Coming Home is also a perfect choice for this square. Book Club or Readalong Book: The Left Hand of Darkness It was a book club selection here: https://www.reddit.com/Fantasy/comments/n2lfc8/classics_book_club_the_left_hand_of_darkness_is/ ~~~ And there we have it! So, sure, a few of these are slightly cheating, but mostly this was just a fun exercise and an excuse to say: please read Ursula K. Le Guin, sheās incredible. š submitted by apageinthestacks to Fantasy [link] [comments] |

2024.05.20 23:53 SuperbRooster3 Fullscreen video instead of screen mirror with Safari with USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter
I upgraded my mom's iPad 2 to the 10th generation iPad for her birthday and got a USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter so she can still watch Thai TV shows from Safari on the TV. With the iPad 2, the video would be fullscreen on the TV and she was able to use the iPad for other things. With the 10th generation iPad, it's screen mirroring to the TV instead. Is there a setting that needs to be changed, or is this a bug, or is this how it is now?
