While we dated, we had a pretty great relationship and it was very much best friends/lovers, our whole group was amazing, and my current friend group now was essentially his group of friends first. He was in his senior year of college at the time, and when he drank too much he'd get a little aggressive (not with me, like if someone bumped into him at the bar type vibe) and his sister was a fucking menace. She was my age, and so codependent on him she was mean to me because I took up his time instead of her. I was nothing but nice to her and tried to make it work, but she ruined my birthday that year, lied to him about how she treated me when he wasn't around, and was in general just really awful to me every chance she got. What's worse is I was his first girlfriend and that was her first time not having him to herself, and he didn't know any better and couldn't stand up for me when he needed to sometimes. The actual breakup was because he was particularly difficult one night drunk and said something super mean to me, and when I wanted to talk to him about it he couldn't really face what he did. He had plans to go home that next day (an hour away, where his sister also lives) and said we'd talk on the phone later. Well, he called me, and he broke up with me over a 3 minute phone call. He didn't even sound like himself, he was distant and cold and the opposite of how he was with me any other time we'd ever gotten into an argument or discussion, and I KNEW it wasn't coming from him. I got over it pretty quickly because I was over his sister's shit and knew it was for the best regardless of how it happened.
We went this entire past year no contact, not seeing each other, nothing. Our friends saw him probably 3 times but he always left town before anyone went out and I'm 90% sure it was because he was avoiding seeing me.
ANYWAY. There's the back story, here's us seeing each other the first time.
This past weekend, one of our good friends had a really important event, and my ex was in town. My best girlfriend told me he would be, and my attitude toward it was truly whatever, I was fine seeing him and over it. We met everyone at the same bar he and I met at, which is basically our spot, and he was coming out of the bathroom when he saw me. His eyes went huge, he looked shocked. I thought it was a little funny, so I went up to him and gave him a a hug and said hi. He awkwardly said it was really nice to see me, and then went to the bar to get a drink. I went with my two friends to get a drink at the bar a few minutes later, and he was standing across from us literally glancing at me every 2 seconds.
I ended up going up to talk to him because we were obviously in the same group, and he asked me how I was. I said I'd been great, asked him how he was, pleasantries. He then goes, "but how are you really?" and I was like ?? No, like I've been great, dude. From there it was like nothing had changed between us. We were firing inside jokes off to each other, talking and laughing, and we pretty much turned into a unit from there. He was buying my drinks, giving me a piggyback ride to the next bar, arm around my waist the whole night, holding my hand, etc. If something funny happened I was the first person he was looking at.
At the end of the night we were talking and I asked him where he was staying, told him he could stay at mine if he wanted. He said he really wanted to, but he was seeing "kind of seeing someone". I asked him point blank if this was a girlfriend situation because I didn't want to ruin anything for him, then said I was seeing someone casually, too. He said he had no idea and basically brushed it off, was super nonchalant about it and didn't seem worried. I then said it wasn't like I wanted to do anything but it would be really nice to sleep next to him. He said he really wanted that, and we ended up back at mine. I had my head in his lap the whole uber ride to my house, he was brushing my hair out of my eyes, etc.
Nothing happened at my house, we stayed up and talked and laughed and cuddled and slept. The next morning we were up early talking and laughing more, catching up, etc. and went to our friend's brunch. The whole entire day he's looking at me like he did when we first met, watching out for me, at one point even pulled me into him and told me I was "really hard not to look at". It was like we were dating again.
We went back to our friend's apartment and hung out with everyone, and it was him in a being bag chair and me between his legs. He was playing with my hair the entire time, massaging my shoulders, leaning into me to laugh at everything we were the only ones noticing. We didn't even talk to hardly anyone else the whole 3 hours we were there. I left at the same time he did because he had an hour to drive home, and our goodbye was so emotional??
He hugged me so tightly for 3 minutes, said "well one of us is going to have to let go" and kissed me so hard it was like he was going off to war or something. I told him I had no idea what I was supposed to say, and he said he didn't either, and we kissed again really hard and we held hands until I was walked off far enough and had to let go. I got in my car and cried for 5 minutes, but I wasn't sad and I wasn't sure why.
I don't know what to do now. He hasn't texted or reached out and I'm sure he's just as confused as I am. I don't have rose-colored glasses on, I know there would need to be a ton of discussions before we ever revisited an "us", but this weekend just threw me because of how he ended our relationship. He's had a lot of things happen the last year that I know made him grow up and mature a lot, but I just donβt know. Am I delusional or does it seem like he's not over it either? He ended it but he also initiated all of this, so I shouldn't reach out, or should I?

I have wanted to share my story just didnβt know where or how and I think Reddit is the place to do it finally.
I (34 F) was married to my ex husband(32 M) for 9 years before I found out about his affair. Literally caught him at the start and watched it grow. I originally reacted with disgust and the violence of hurling our wedding photo at his head. But over time stood by biding my time while it continued to happen.
After I caught him then began the conversations where we were up until 3 am and we slept separate. I was told he loved me but wasnβt in love with me blah blah blah. He left multiple times to βclear his mindβ which I can only assume was to be with her. And eventually admitted that they had become physically intimate.
This broke me, we had met when I was 15 he was the only man I had ever been with, and I the only woman he had been with, or he led me to believe that. It was at this point, 2 months after discovering the affair, that I decided to visit my mom in another state to get clarity and space to think through what I wanted to do and to allow him to do the same.
At the end of my week away we decided to give our marriage a chance and even planned a weekend getaway for when I returned. Which appeared to be lovely, but I could still not sleep, while on this getaway. I didnβt trust him and eventually learned how to pull up the phone history in real time through TMobile and discovered he was still talking to the other woman. By the end of 1 week βof tryingβ he ran off to her in the middle of the night because he couldnβt do this and she was threatening to binge drink herself into the hospital, despite having her child at home with her.
It was at this juncture that we chose to start our separation and the longest 5 months of my life began. I chose to stand for my marriage. Meaning I would welcome him back still if he wanted to come back, but at the same time knowing one day I would reach my limit and be done. In his eyes we were slowly separating everything for an eventual divorce, but he didnβt want the divorce yet.
During this time we were still physically intimate weekly; for two reasons it fulfilled my physical needs and was my petty attempt at getting back at her and him.
So after 5 months of being the wife that stood by waiting while her husband openly cheated, I reached my point of being done with the situation of him being with her M-F and with me on the weekends. I decided to move home. So I sped up selling the house and was gone within a month of making this decision. But we both still didnβt want a divorce.
After moving home (a state away) we still spoke frequently while he was living with her. He called and spoke to me on his commute home to her. Even mentioned how much he missed sex with me. I on the other hand started to see clearer and clearer and began to be done. I was pulling away and he could see it and was trying to hold on. Until I was finally done, I actually took my little brother asking me why, and me not having an answer anymore to be done.
I didnβt say a word I just slipped away and started online dating; it definitely was the confidence boost I needed and had no intentions of finding a serious relationship. Granted probably not the best thing to do at the time.
About 3 weeks into dating I finally responded to my now ex husband. And asked him for a divorce. This began the pleading and begging but with no actual action on his part of getting me back. But I was done my heart was cold towards him and enjoying the attention I was receiving.
We divorced 3 months later due to the state he lived in having a 90 day waiting period.
I have moved on and found a truly better match in my current husband and am a mother finally. I am truly happy with my life now more than I ever was with him. I have received many apologies from him but never a truly satisfying one.
However I am still friends with my ex mother in law so I know that he and the other woman had a child together and married a year after that. I know I shouldnβt care but I want their relationship to fail and feel horrible for that feeling for the childβs sake. So I suppose I wrote all of this to get my final slice of closure in a piece of the world knowing my story and it being out there.

Hello everyone, I have been responding to posts in my original and my GoFundMe post, but I just wanted to make a new post because everything gets buried when itβs a week old.
Valentine has been on her medication for almost a week and sheβs doing pretty well. Her breathing is back to normal. Her mood and her activity levels are back to what they were. Her appetite is still not great, but it always has been not great. Sheβs a super picky eater. She has refused to try the kidney support canned food in all three flavors they gave us. They donβt have samples of the dry kidney support. She usually eats dry food anyway, and has always disliked wet food. But we canβt try the dry food because I donβt have $80 for a bag of it with the chance she wonβt eat any of it. Dr also suggested another brand of renal support food thatβs βonlyβ $51 plus shipping. Still canβt afford that not knowing if she would eat it.
I spent this weekend cataloguing and price-researching a collection I have so I could sell it for her care, and that started off real promising but has fallen off and a few ppl now have had me bag up an order to come get and then just ghosted me. One of those was a $177 order, so that one really was disappointing.
Valentineβs gofundme raised $525 for which I am very grateful to you all for helping with. Iβm trying to get my 15 year old laptop running again so I can maybe make a flyer to put up at the local coffee shops and other places. I just discovered the other day that her $126 meds arenβt even a full monthβs worth but 2 of them are only two weeksβ worth.
All in all, some good news, some bad news, and a huge amount of gratitude to you all not only for your donations, but for letting me vent here, too, because Iβm so frustrated with the costs and all the roadblocks I keep hitting.

 | Went to Peru this April for a bucket list trip and as it is also on a lot of other peopleβs lists, I thought Iβd share our experiences doing a full Belmond tour (hotels, private guides, museum/site/MP tickets, transportation). When researching for the trip, I had seen plenty of reviews on the individual properties but not much on their βjourneysβ so hopefully this is exhaustive but not too exhausting. Usually I plan my own trips and like to do a mix of properties rather than stay with one brand, but since we wanted to stay at the various Belmond offerings, it made sense to us to just do the package. submitted by slightlybemusedsloth to chubbytravel [link] [comments] 4 travelers (2 couples, all in our thirties) Time frame: Eight days in April including international travel, booked in February (so short notice) Day 1: Arrived in Lima late at night. Word of caution at the baggage claim - we knew we were meeting our Belmond rep and had been sent a diagram of where to meet him, which was a good thing, as there are people trawling the baggage claim that will say they are from the various hotels and try to take your luggage out for you (for a tip). Theyβre not officially associated with the hotel, so use their service at your own risk! Once we met our rep, we were promptly whisked away in a comfortable sprinter van complete with water and snacks, as would be the case for the rest of the trip, and our guide gave a good overview of the city on the way to the hotel, the Belmond Miraflores. The hotel sits right on the water and is what I would call a classic βcity hotel.β Beautiful flower arrangements in the lobby, where we were sat with welcome pisco sours for check in. Stayed in an Ocean View Junior Suite which was comfortable but nothing crazy memorable. Day 2: Breakfast at the hotel rooftop restaurant. The small pool area is there as well. Great views over the coast. Food was a mix of a short a la carte menu and plenty of buffet options. Service was efficient and very friendly. Post breakfast, we were met in the lobby by our tour guide and driver for the day. Saw multiple sites including the Plaza Mayor, Archbishopβs Palace, the Santo Domingo Convent, and pre-Incan ruins. The best part was definitely the Larco museum. Itβs excellently curated, the outdoor space is beautiful, and the exhibits are fascinating (and unique - erotic ceramics???). Appreciated having a guide to take us through the highlights, as sometimes itβs easy to get βmuseum-ed outβ but I could have easily spent more time there. Hopped back to the hotel for a light late lunch. The restaurant downstairs has excellent ceviche. Spent a few hours relaxing and enjoying the view before Maido for dinner. The food is great, the wine pairing and intro of said wines was a bit perfunctory. Day 3: Breakfast was again delicious and the waiters packed us to go parcels of coca/mint tea leaves for our trip to Cusco. Belmond took care of booking our flight on Latam and we were walked through right up to security. Once we landed and before we really felt the altitude, we were met by our driver and guide for the next few days and whisked away towards the Sacred Valley. Again, plenty of water and snacks on board, wifi, and coca candy for the altitude. Made a stop at Sulca Textiles, which is a small community collective of weavers with a museum of stunning wall weavings, a store with real baby alpaca items (not βmaybe alpacaβ), and a chance to see and feed the alpacas, llamas, and guacanos! Very memorable for sure and the best spot to load up on gifts. Stopped for a few more photo ops on the way to the Rio Sagrado. The Sacred Valley is filled with expansive, ever changing views and Hugo entertained and educated us on the long history and culture of the area. The Rio Sagrado is a small, quiet sanctuary that is almost blink and miss the entrance right off the main road. Again we were greeted with a welcome drink and cool towels. The hotel is not big but there are some terraces and they will happily golf cart you around if you need (or in our case, our luggage). Stayed in a Garden Junior Suite. Room had a small balcony area with yoga mat available and while there was no tub, there was a large walk in shower. There is a small bar and quiet restaurant on site. Emphasis on quiet - it was the smallest of all the hotels on the trip, but the food quality was certainly up to par. They warm the beds at turndown with llama water bottles, a very cute touch. Day 4: Breakfast here seems to alternate between a la carte plus buffet vs strictly a la carte. Hugo met us at our pre-discussed time and off we went to visit Ollantaytambo. Thereβs a colorful market there that is nice for photos and if you want classic souvenir trinkets but the site itself is the star. The streets there are narrow and crowded and our driver navigated them with ease. Hugo hiked with us to the very top and impressed up with his knowledge and insight. Weβre also not stuffy people and he easily navigated both our interest in the culture and also our often bad jokes (with worse ones of his own π). For lunch we were treated to a local restaurant up in the mountains where we were the only ones there! I donβt think we would have otherwise found the place but it was a veritable feast that we got to enjoy with our now friends. Post lunch, more impressive tours of Maras and Moray. If you donβt get to go to Central in Lima, Virgilioβs other restaurant Mil is right next to Moray. Back to hotel for relaxing at the bar with drinks and cards and then early dinnerβ¦MP was waiting! Day 5: Did I mention you get to feed the baby alpacas at breakfast? After this must do, we were off back to Ollantaytambo to the train station. If youβre not like us and book reasonably ahead of time, the Belmond Hiram Bingham stops right at the Rio Sagrado and picks you up from there. We took the Vistadome. As you would guess from the name, thereβs plenty of windows that stretch above you to take in the Andean views. Thereβs an open observatory car at the end as well complete with live entertainment. The trip goes by quickly and Hugo came with us on the train. There are luggage restrictions so we left our big bags with our driver, who would bring them to Cusco for us. At the station in Aguas Calientes, the Santuary Lodge has people to take your bags ahead of you, and then you take the bus up to MP proper. Here Hugo worked his magic (he seemed to know people everywhere) and managed to get us on the bus before a huge wedding party. Yes itβs a public bus, but itβs perfectly comfortable and air conditioned. Arrived at the entrance to MP and wow, the Sanctuary Lodge really is RIGHT THERE. They take you to the garden to check in (welcome drinks, towels, the whole enchilada), and you marvel at where you are. The gardens are beautiful and absolutely filled with hummingbirds! Rooms werenβt quite ready so we had the buffet lunch at the hotel. Plenty of choices here. They came and found us at lunch to tell us our rooms were ready. Stayed in a Deluxe Terrace Room. The rooms areβ¦not large and had a tiny bit of a damp smell (this is such a minor thing) but were well stocked (raincoats, souvenir water bottles, bug spray, lotions, massage oils, plenty of snacks and drinks - meals and minibasnacks included here). Once we had time to freshen up, it was time to see Machu Picchu! Photos donβt do it justice and you will want a guide to get the most out of your experience. Hugo made the site come to life and this time of year, it did not feel crowded at all going later in the day. It also started drizzling when we were leaving, and it was perfect getting to duck right into the hotel, steps away. Thereβs nothing besides the hotel there so relax at the restaurant bar, have a spa visit, and get ready for dinner. It seemed most everyone there had changed out of hiking gear. Personally, dinner was well executed if the flavors were not my favorite. Take it with a grain of salt as they obviously have to bring everything up from the town. Day 6: Woke up early to hike Huayna Picchu. The best views of MP were at this time. Hugo hiked βthe stairs of deathβ with us (not nearly as bad as it sounds if you donβt have an extreme fear of heights) and played personal photographer. Itβs a very worthwhile hike to get to see MP from a different angle. We got back right at check out time and the hotel was kind enough to let us change/shower in our own room rather than have to use their separate change/shower area. We did another circuit of MP after lunch and then just hung out with Hugo over drinks. The biggest perk of staying at Sanctuary Lodge is having multiple chances to see MP. While itβs beautiful on a gloomy day with the clouds suspended amongst the mountain peaks, it would be sad to travel all that way and never see it while itβs sunny. And weather changes quickly in the mountains! Had a long bit of travel back through the Sacred Valley by train (if you were only to do the Hiram Bingham one way, it may be better to do it on the way back as itβs nighttime and you canβt enjoy the views), then picked up by car and off all the way back to Cusco. Stayed at the Palacio Nazarenas in a Studio Suite and it was the best of all the Belmond properties! Right next door to the Belmond Monasterio. It has beautiful courtyard spaces everywhere you look and the rooms are the largest here. They pump oxygen in to help with the altitude. Large bathroom with soaking tub and separate spacious walk in shower. Studio suites have a sitting area inside and a small patio area outside overlooking a courtyard. Large bottles of rum and pisco are included. Got in super late so ordered room service which was delicious. Day 7: Breakfast was combo buffet and a la carte. Fresh juices and plenty of local produce. The restaurant Mauka overlooks the pristine royal blue pool and itβs a picture perfect setting. Lots of touring around Cusco this day, seeing the main square and cathedral, multiple important sites like Sacsayhuaman, and Quenqo. Hugo really shined here - besides helping us understand the significance of the sites, he knew we were sad about not seeing a vicunya so we did an impromptu stop at another weaving center to see two of the few non-wild vicunyas. He also had arranged βa farewell surpriseβ for us and one of our party hadnβt been feeling well that day. Hugo checked on him all during our tours and arranged for our driver to pick him up so we could all share one last farewell drink. The Palacio is a gem and I would happily spend many more days here! When we got back to the hotel post shopping and tearful farewells (we actually still keep in touch), we had a personal patio side pisco sour making class with one of the fantastic butlers and enjoyed one of my favorite meals of the trip at Mauka. Pricey, but very very good. Day 8: Off to Lima again, where we had a long layover, the same Belmond rep who met us initially helped settle us in for the wait before the long trip home! Belmond Bellini perks (through a TA, they donβt have a personal reward program): Usually $100 hotel credit everywhere we stayed, potential for room upgrades, breakfast every day, welcome note/chocolate. Also a $500 voucher to use for another Belmond trip Will be looking to do a trip back to Peru at some point to see the Nazca Lines and Lake Titicaca and will not hesitate to use Belmond again, especially to get a few extra days of R&R at the Palacio. TLDR: If youβre going to Peru for the first time and want to do it chubby luxe, the Belmonds certainly fit the bill and the package deal is worth it for the convenience and the quality of the guides. Here is the second installment of data/information on $KENDU (CAVEAT: this is day two and post two...do NOT expect a "Journal a Day to keep the jeets away"), a memecoin built with a plan around a strong dev with experience and vision. THIS IS NFA, but merely sharing of my perspective on this coin. I have been in the crypto space since 2017 and as of about six weeks ago I had avoided touching memecoins altogether. I had a plan, but it all got derailed when I kept digging and reading and looking at KENDU. Yes, I have a bag, but that doesn't mean I am trying to tell you to buy. I merely want to provide an avenue for you to see the facts and come to your own financial choice.
I am fairly experienced, but I suffer the doubts and nerves of many humans as I still question my own choices and timing. The idea that we did dip to my target market cap entry point and yet I did not wait shows I have room to grow, but as of writing KENDU has recovered some already and this is still a great time to enter. I believe the people on the ground floor understand exactly what they are doing on so many levels, one of which being how to build community and a positive one at that. I did some research and found out that every measure is done to protect the community. I have seen a couple moments where someone has been banned in chat. I don't see the spammed messages or any divisive commentary make it far at all and apparently some of this is done in real time manually. This is hugely important to keep the community laser focused over our shared goal of making a fat pile of mone, but also to help us grow connected as humans that might just trust one another to do their part hold the line until the goal is reached. Trust is important and maybe that is why my first foray into the VC was so enjoyable and natural.

Here is the second installment of data/information on $KENDU (CAVEAT: this is day two and post two...do NOT expect a "Journal a Day to keep the jeets away"), a memecoin built with a plan around a strong dev with experience and vision. THIS IS NFA, but merely sharing of my perspective on this coin. I have been in the crypto space since 2017 and as of about six weeks ago I had avoided touching memecoins altogether. I had a plan, but it all got derailed when I kept digging and reading and looking at KENDU. Yes, I have a bag, but that doesn't mean I am trying to tell you to buy. I merely want to provide an avenue for you to see the facts and come to your own financial choice.
I am fairly experienced, but I suffer the doubts and nerves of many humans as I still question my own choices and timing. The idea that we did dip to my target market cap entry point and yet I did not wait shows I have room to grow, but as of writing KENDU has recovered some already and this is still a great time to enter. Timing the market vs. time in the market...this is still a long play. Let's get into it!!
Point #2: This coin is backed by a super strong community who create an infectious culture built around work and acceptance. Those who have more experience with memecoins: I WOULD LOVE to hear from you (not just the KENDU army...we are strong and we roll deep, BUT we are NOT bots) to see if I am on the right track here with the importance of this Point #2. Anyone can see that the holders are growing sometimes exponentially...I bet that exponential thrust correlates with the pump that happened around that time. Again, I judge and doubt myself harshly, but I feel another huge surge will happen again and I was tired of waiting on the sidelines.

I want to share some information about the community in the form of some examples/stories to give outsiders the facts and I guess to encourage you to DYOR and at least come into the Telegram (5057 members strong). Remember that coming into the TG is like a free test drive, but it is a free test drive with no strings attached of your favorite uber expensive sports car like a Lamborghini, or Buggati. That is a huge opportunity.
I lurked in the community for about a week or two before buying in and was posting a bit here and there with questions from time to time. One night I decided to take it to the next level of participation and hop into the voice chat to ask a question. I have no problem admitting that my question felt a bit silly and random, especially considering that I wasn't sure if the VC was for planning next moves, hanging out, high level business like meetings for those on the inside, etc. My innocuous question was met with kindness and actual answers. NOTE: I was curious about the KENDU INU bike helmet ( Hey, chill I need a new bike helmet so my kids don't call me out on my clear hypocrisy. Why not support my most important investment).
IF you are still reading this, that might be a miracle, but I have to share how welcome I felt. The fact that one of these Chads knew the answer about the specific item speaks volumes about the work ethic and care for this project and I ended up chatting a bit with the crew on VC. My husband and I recently returned from the transatlantic cruise on Anthem of the Seas. I love a review, so I figured I'd share some though about our recent experience in case anyone is interested!
Overall thoughts: This cruise was an incredible experience. We wanted to do something special for our honeymoon, and this definitely fit the bill. We received excellent service all over the ship. Food was pretty good, but I'd probably skip Chops next time.
Cabin: We were in Cabin 13132, a standard balcony cabin. It was clean and well maintained. There was plenty of storage, we had no trouble putting all of our things (including 20 books) away. We chose the cabin because it was about halfway between the elevators and the "secret" doors to the Solarium. We knew we'd spend the majority of our mornings in the Solarium, so being that close to it was a significant benefit. I've seen many warnings about not being right under the pool deck, but we really didn't notice much noise. There was the occasional sound of chairs being moved around, but nothing that kept us awake. I imagine it might be different if we were under the main pool instead of the Solarium.
We always love having a balcony cabin. The weather was mild enough that we sat out there several evenings to watch the sunset and have a drink. We also slept with the balcony door open a few times.
Food: After some disappointing experiences in the MDR last time we sailed Anthem and on Liberty last summer, we decided to prioritize dining in other locations on this cruise. We went to the Windjammer for dinner most nights. It was excellent. The food was good, and the service was fantastic. They made sure any empty plates were cleared from the table almost immediately. Dining in the Windjammer also made our refillable soda mugs more valuable. We wouldn't have gotten anywhere near as much use if we were regularly in the MDR.
For breakfast, we ate at the Solarium Bistro almost every day. It's a smaller selection than the Windjammer, but it's less chaotic. I found breakfast to be the busiest meal in the Windjammer. The Solarium Bistro still has a good selection, including a custom omelette station. We had lunch at the Solarium Bistro several times, and dinner twice. It was excellent. The maitre d', Rowell, seems to be everywhere at once. He seated guests, helped with reservations, at one point he was manning the toaster during breakfast. The energy he put into the restaurant was mirrored by the rest of the staff, and made it one of the best dining experience on the ship.
We ate at a bunch of different spots for lunch. Sorrento's was pretty good. The pizza was always hot and fresh. The Doghouse was a nice change of pace. I wish it was open longer. The Windjammer was a reliable option for lunch, but we were more likely to dine at the Solarium Bistro.
We had dinner in the MDR three times, and it was fine. Nothing special. Excellent service, food was so-so. It's very strange to me how the MDR and Windjammer can be serving the same thing, but the quality is better at the Windjammer. We also had breakfast there twice, primarily because we both love the Market Vegetable Breakfast Bowl. It was just as good as we remembered.
It was our honeymoon, so we splurged and did quite a bit of speciality dining on this trip, to mixed results. We went to Chops twice for dinner, and it was alright. We liked the lamb better than the steak. I enjoyed Jamie's Italian much more than Chops. The risotto rosso was delicious, and the short rib was perfectly tender. We also did Chops and Jamie's for lunch. Again, Jamie's was the clear winner. My husband had lunch at Izumi one day, which he was very pleased with.
On three occasions, we ordered room service. I ordered lunch one day, which came quickly and was exactly as ordered. We put out a hanger for a breakfast order to be delivered between 6:30 and 7:00. When it hadn't arrived by 7:30, and needing to meet for our shore excursion by 8:30, we figured the tag had been taken by another guest and decided to go out to get breakfast. Later, we saw the fee charged to our account, then credited back, and found a little tray of treats waiting in the room with a note rhat said "Courtesy of the Room Service Team" when we got back that evening. It was the first port day of the trip, I can only guess they got very backed up and we were gone by the time they tried to deliver our order. The treats were a nice touch. We also did late night room service one evening. Again, it was delivered quickly.
Activities & Things to Do: When it's just my husband and I, we mostly want to read books and look at water. As usual, we did a great job in meeting that goal. I was usually in the Solarium by 7:30. The chair next to me was still free when he came up, which was around 8:30 most days. We'd enjoy our books and the view of the ocean until lunchtime. After lunch, we usually napped, played card games, or read on our balcony. There were a ton of activities on the calendar for this cruise: trivia, sports, talks about special interests, crafts. If we wanted to, we could have been busy every minute of the day.
Bars/Drinks: Part of what I love about Royal is how accommodating they are of non-drinkers. We got the Refreshment Package and definitely made it worth the money. All of the bartenders we encountered were wonderful. They were happy to make me an NA drink. Drink service in the Solarium was great. There was constantly someone coming around for bar service. When I went up to the bar myself, there was little to no wait most of the time, and the bartenders were always friendly. We also visited the Schooner Bar quite a bit. Again, the folks working there were friendly and helpful. I got hooked on the virgin lavender daiquiri. It was sweeter than I usually go for, but I enjoyed it a lot. I also enjoyed the virgin pineapple guava sangria, which was just the pineapple guava juice plus club soda. They usually make it with Sprite, but had no issue doing it with club soda, which reduces the sweetness by a lot. The only NA beer available was Heineken 0.0. It's perfectly acceptable, but given the increasing variety of NA beers on the market, I wish they had an additional option. Still, maybe it's for the best since it's not included in the Refreshment Package.
Entertainment: We went to the Welcome Aboard show, which was good fun. We're pretty sure the comedian was the same one as we had on Liberty last summer. We tried to go to the late night comedy show, but it was very disorganized. The previous show let out of the theater less than 30 minutes before, and trying to get in and find a seat was the biggest crowd crush we experienced on the entire trip. We ended up bailing. We saw a magic show with Martin Brock. If he's an entertainer on your cruise, make sure to go. He was one of the best I've ever seen. We also attended a couple of game shows, which were good fun. And then there was Spectra's Cabaret. We'd seen it before and enjoyed it. Unfortunately, this performing was a little disappointing. I think the person who plays Spectra makes a huge difference in the overall energy of the show. Unfortunately, our Spectra was lackluster. The rest of the cast was excellent, though. They've got some very talented dancers.
Ports: After a week at sea, our first port of call was Madeira. It was the first day of the flower festival, and we were concerned about transportation and traffic. We decided to do an excursion through Royal. We did the "Charming and Easy Madeira" bus tour. It was very low key, we were the youngest people on the tour by quite a bit. The tour made a few stops at different places with excellent views, including Pico do Areeiro, the highest point accessible by car. If we ever get back to Madeira, I'd like to explore on our own, but I'm glad we opted for the tour this time.
The next port was A Coruna. This was our favorite by far. The ship docks right downtown, so it's easy to explore on your own. We mostly just walked around. Saw some statues and public art. Spent some time in XardΓns de MΓ©ndez NΓΊΓ±ez watching people play with their dogs. We also got a bite to eat at Bo&Go La Marina. I'd definitely recommend it for coffee and dessert.
Our final port was Le Havre. The ship docks in an industrial area, very similar to Bayonne. There's a shuttle bus that does a circuit of the ship, downtown, and the mall. It was $5 for an all day pass. Shuttles came every 15 to 20 minutes. It was Ascension Thursday, so a lot of places were closed. We tried two different cafes, neither was open. We ended up walking around town, and spending time sitting in a park. It was a nice, relaxed day.
Post-cruise: We disembarked in London. We had a transfer to London scheduled by our TA, but they gave the driver the wrong terminal. Once he figured out where we were, it was a very pleasant trip to London. We stayed at the Melia Kensington Square, which was in a perfect location. We dropped off our bags and walked to Kensington Gardens, wandered around a bit, and got ice cream at the Albert Memorial. Once our room was ready, we freshened up and went to the Victoria and Albert Museum for a couple of hours. We barely scratched the surface, but it was a very cool experience.
We flew home on Norse Atlantic, in premium economy. The service on the flight was excellent. The food was surprisingly good, much better than we expected. We wouldn't hesitate to fly with them again.
Final thoughts: We figured this would be a once in lifetime experience, but before we were halfway through the cruise, we were discussing when we could realistically do it again. It'll probably be for our 10th anniversary, since we won't have to sort out childcare at that point.
We've got 433 days until our next cruise, on Symphony of the Seas out of Bayonne. It'll be our first experience on an Oasis class ship, and we're bringing the kiddo along. Until then, I'll be living vicariously through everyone posting here!

Overall thoughts: This cruise was an incredible experience. We wanted to do something special for our honeymoon, and this definitely fit the bill. We received excellent service all over the ship. Food was pretty good, but I'd probably skip Chops next time.
Cabin: We were in Cabin 13132, a standard balcony cabin. It was clean and well maintained. There was plenty of storage, we had no trouble putting all of our things (including 20 books) away. We chose the cabin because it was about halfway between the elevators and the "secret" doors to the Solarium. We knew we'd spend the majority of our mornings in the Solarium, so being that close to it was a significant benefit. I've seen many warnings about not being right under the pool deck, but we really didn't notice much noise. There was the occasional sound of chairs being moved around, but nothing that kept us awake. I imagine it might be different if we were under the main pool instead of the Solarium.
We always love having a balcony cabin. The weather was mild enough that we sat out there several evenings to watch the sunset and have a drink. We also slept with the balcony door open a few times.
Food: After some disappointing experiences in the MDR last time we sailed Anthem and on Liberty last summer, we decided to prioritize dining in other locations on this cruise. We went to the Windjammer for dinner most nights. It was excellent. The food was good, and the service was fantastic. They made sure any empty plates were cleared from the table almost immediately. Dining in the Windjammer also made our refillable soda mugs more valuable. We wouldn't have gotten anywhere near as much use if we were regularly in the MDR.
For breakfast, we ate at the Solarium Bistro almost every day. It's a smaller selection than the Windjammer, but it's less chaotic. I found breakfast to be the busiest meal in the Windjammer. The Solarium Bistro still has a good selection, including a custom omelette station. We had lunch at the Solarium Bistro several times, and dinner twice. It was excellent. The maitre d', Rowell, seems to be everywhere at once. He seated guests, helped with reservations, at one point he was manning the toaster during breakfast. The energy he put into the restaurant was mirrored by the rest of the staff, and made it one of the best dining experience on the ship.
We ate at a bunch of different spots for lunch. Sorrento's was pretty good. The pizza was always hot and fresh. The Doghouse was a nice change of pace. I wish it was open longer. The Windjammer was a reliable option for lunch, but we were more likely to dine at the Solarium Bistro.
We had dinner in the MDR three times, and it was fine. Nothing special. Excellent service, food was so-so. It's very strange to me how the MDR and Windjammer can be serving the same thing, but the quality is better at the Windjammer. We also had breakfast there twice, primarily because we both love the Market Vegetable Breakfast Bowl. It was just as good as we remembered.
It was our honeymoon, so we splurged and did quite a bit of speciality dining on this trip, to mixed results. We went to Chops twice for dinner, and it was alright. We liked the lamb better than the steak. I enjoyed Jamie's Italian much more than Chops. The risotto rosso was delicious, and the short rib was perfectly tender. We also did Chops and Jamie's for lunch. Again, Jamie's was the clear winner. My husband had lunch at Izumi one day, which he was very pleased with.
On three occasions, we ordered room service. I ordered lunch one day, which came quickly and was exactly as ordered. We put out a hanger for a breakfast order to be delivered between 6:30 and 7:00. When it hadn't arrived by 7:30, and needing to meet for our shore excursion by 8:30, we figured the tag had been taken by another guest and decided to go out to get breakfast. Later, we saw the fee charged to our account, then credited back, and found a little tray of treats waiting in the room with a note rhat said "Courtesy of the Room Service Team" when we got back that evening. It was the first port day of the trip, I can only guess they got very backed up and we were gone by the time they tried to deliver our order. The treats were a nice touch. We also did late night room service one evening. Again, it was delivered quickly.
Activities & Things to Do: When it's just my husband and I, we mostly want to read books and look at water. As usual, we did a great job in meeting that goal. I was usually in the Solarium by 7:30. The chair next to me was still free when he came up, which was around 8:30 most days. We'd enjoy our books and the view of the ocean until lunchtime. After lunch, we usually napped, played card games, or read on our balcony. There were a ton of activities on the calendar for this cruise: trivia, sports, talks about special interests, crafts. If we wanted to, we could have been busy every minute of the day.
Bars/Drinks: Part of what I love about Royal is how accommodating they are of non-drinkers. We got the Refreshment Package and definitely made it worth the money. All of the bartenders we encountered were wonderful. They were happy to make me an NA drink. Drink service in the Solarium was great. There was constantly someone coming around for bar service. When I went up to the bar myself, there was little to no wait most of the time, and the bartenders were always friendly. We also visited the Schooner Bar quite a bit. Again, the folks working there were friendly and helpful. I got hooked on the virgin lavender daiquiri. It was sweeter than I usually go for, but I enjoyed it a lot. I also enjoyed the virgin pineapple guava sangria, which was just the pineapple guava juice plus club soda. They usually make it with Sprite, but had no issue doing it with club soda, which reduces the sweetness by a lot. The only NA beer available was Heineken 0.0. It's perfectly acceptable, but given the increasing variety of NA beers on the market, I wish they had an additional option. Still, maybe it's for the best since it's not included in the Refreshment Package.
Entertainment: We went to the Welcome Aboard show, which was good fun. We're pretty sure the comedian was the same one as we had on Liberty last summer. We tried to go to the late night comedy show, but it was very disorganized. The previous show let out of the theater less than 30 minutes before, and trying to get in and find a seat was the biggest crowd crush we experienced on the entire trip. We ended up bailing. We saw a magic show with Martin Brock. If he's an entertainer on your cruise, make sure to go. He was one of the best I've ever seen. We also attended a couple of game shows, which were good fun. It's unfortunate for Sacramento that Huerter had a down year but the Kings are in a similar spot to Toronto, in as much as they need more talent added to their roster and shouldn't be dumping contract after contract. The difference - aside from one core likely being at their peak while the other is still in the midst of developing - is that the Kings don't have a ton of options to improve from where they are due to that lack of internal development to raise their ceiling. Between the protections on their pick owed to the Hawks as a result of the Huerter trade limiting their ability to put together a competitive package for an impact player right now and the lack of notable prospects aside from Keegan Murray - who came in to the league as an older prospect - there aren't a ton of assets for Sacramento to toss around nor avenues to pursue unless they want to trade some distant (read: 2028 or further) 1sts. All that being said...in the off-chance the Kings revert back to the bad decision-making that has defined them for over a decade and they are open to trading to get off of a multi-year contract for a consecutive season, it really depends on how you feel about Huerter or Barnes. No, not Scottie, the guy the Raptors lost their chance at drafting due to a coinflip. Kevin has been awful ever since last year's playoffs but historically, he's been a good 3-point shooter and a mediocre defender. In terms both simple and complimentary to both players, he's a realistic outcome for Gradey Dick with worse passing/court vision. With the Raptors already having Dick, however, adding Huerter makes for a redundant addition as far as their "buy-low" candidates are concerned, even if Kevin does bounce back, that would serve to take away time from Gradey and his development. Huerter as far as role and expectations go may be a realistic outcome for Gradey when he turns the same age as the 26 year-old Kevin, but Dick's skillset as a rookie includes notably better passing and off-ball movement that adds more to the offense than Huerter has been capable of. If they rehab his value successfully then it becomes a much easier sell - both on the trade and on eventually trading him away - to take him on for part of the season but if a bounceback was guaranteed, he wouldn't be worth consideration for a Bruce Brown trade. As an alternative, there's Harrison Barnes; Barnes is under contract for another year after 2024/25 and while he has shown serious signs of regression, him boasting a significant playoff experience as well as championship experience from his time with the Golden State Warriors would provide a valuable veteran presence on the team. Even in his career's twilight years, Harrison still manages to shoot the 3 well - he shot 38% on a little under 5 attempts per game for the Kings - so it wouldn't make for the worst placeholder roster spot while the Raptors figure out their future frontcourt. As Sacramento has kept their pick due to losing in the play-in, a trade with them can go on of two ways. They can either have the higher pick be the main piece along with a reclamation project like Chris Duarte (Who is being paid a not insignificant $5.8 million) and one of the two mediocre contracts in Barnes or Huerter, or they can resolve the backup PG position with one of the many 2021 draftees up for an offseason extension in Davion Mitchell in addition to moving on up in the draft. https://preview.redd.it/t7lw7zjtrn1d1.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=62a2a66b21ac13fdfedab552966aaccc47e56421 Also known as D-Mitch 2.0, the younger of the two Mitchells with a D (No relation to Donovan, it's just a nickname) has not lived up to that moniker. An excellent on-ball defender whose offensive game has historically lagged far behind his defensive prowess, his finishing & outside shooting have been suspect since being drafted. While Mitchell was shooting better overall post-All-Star break this season - he was averaging 41.6% from 3 and driving to the rim with far more efficiency - it is a relatively small sample size of games on a less than significant volume. For context, Davion only shot an average of 2.8 attempts per game over this 28 game stretch which is hardly convincing as far as turnaround is concerned. He's never been known as a 3-point shooter and his 3rd year in the league was an overall mixed bag but as a potential backup guard, he's a decent option despite his limited upside at the age of 25. The main issue for Sacramento concerning Mitchell is that, like Moses Moody on the Warriors, Mitchell does need to be extended in the offseason to not risk losing him in restricted free agency and the Kings are increasingly close to hitting the luxury tax apron with a season before said extension kicks in. They're two away from having to worry about paying Keegan Murray, with those extensions likely to occur in the following offseason. With Mitchell's sporadic performance in 2023/24 and a notable sophomore slump that preceded it, it's likely he'll be entering this offseason as a massive question mark for any team that adds him to their roster - or the Kings if he remains with them. More importantly, and this should go without saying, if the Kings have to choose between paying/keeping Keegan Murray and Davion Mitchell, they're choosing Keegan Murray so his time in Sacramento may be limited a la Quickley outperforming what the Knicks were willing to pay him. Chris Duarte, on the other hand, has quietly been on a downwards spiral since achieving All-Rookie 2nd Team back in 2022. The 6'6 swingman had a decent outing with the Pacers, shooting a hot 36.9% from 3 and averaging 13 points before finding his role diminished, his sophomore slump mired by injury and inconsistent shooting, and his offseason seeing him traded to the Kings in the summer for a pair of seconds. His time in Sacramento? Uneventful, to say the least. A career low across the board and with Chris being on the older side (He's just as old as Kevin Huerter at 26), it's not unreasonable to think that Duarte is at his peak even if he were given greater opportunity. Whatever else can be said about Davion, his defense is likely to get him a second contract, the question is for how much. With Chris, his future in the NBA is dubious at the moment and he's almost certainly entering the season without an extension. As far as alternative draft capital is concerned i.e. "not their 2024 1st", the Kings do have a few interesting seconds, most notably the 45th pick in this draft and a 2025 2nd from the Blazers that's not protected but otherwise don't have a lot of options outside of the 13th pick in this year's draft. As mentioned before, their draft capital is locked up for the time being due to a trade with the Hawks and thus they don't have a lot of options to up the talent on the roster. The Kings do need to shake up their roster but it's an open question as to how they should do so with them likely out of any offseason star sweepstakes on the horizon and so few teams looking to sell. My wedding was this past Saturday, and everything was amazing EXCEPT my florals. I was quoted $7,000 and my floral vision, inspo and moodboard was consistent the whole process.
Color Palette: We wanted a bright, light and pastel pink and white with light blue accents. It was a spring vibe that incorporated our favorite colors (pink and blue). We got peaches, yellow, dusty pink and LAVENDAR.
Quality: The roses were obviously starting to brown. You can see the age. This is crazy to me bc she claims to only do one wedding a weekend, so there shouldn't be any old flowers.
Petal Toss: She told me she would provide cones for the petal toss. On the wedding day, the coordinator asked me where my cones were. They then scrambled and simply asked the venue bar for plastic cups, which looked so obviously cheap and unplanned.
Staircase: We were supposed to have florals traveling up the staircase and bottom heavy with lots of candles. We got florals on ONE side covering the last TWO steps.
Fireplace/Mantle: We were supposed to get assymmetrical arrangement with "traveling" greenery for an organic look. We got one table centerpiece-size floor arrangement and a 12" greenfoam block of flowers on the top. No natural greens at all.
Ceremony aisle: There were supposed to be 7 arrangments lining the center aisle. These were supposed to be tall, then repurposed as tall center pieces. She made LOW table centerpieces only and DIDN'T put them out for the ceremony???
Arch: Heavy florals and minimal greens. The flowers we got here were 50% of the volume we were promised.
Tables: We were supposed to get a variety of bus vases, small votives and tapered candles for every table in addition to the floral center piece that was "repurposed" from ceremony. Each candle had three tapered candles randomly placed.
Welcome sign: $100 for FIFTEEN stems of flowers (half of them were carnations, which are cheap). No greenery to provide coverage. She also blocked my husband's name and my BRIDESMAIDS had to rearrange the flowers so both names were readable.

My closest friend had her Bach weekend recently, which many of us had to fly in for. Each day had a series of different activities and a βthemeβ, which sounded super fun going in, but now that I returned home, I noticed that I have been feeling pretty bad. Itβs not one thing in particular, but a series of little things that culminated into all sorts of mixed feelings for me:
- Because each day (or even part of a day) had a βthemeβ, there was a lot of manual labor involved for everyone to make the said theme happen. On Day 1, many of us bridesmaids woke up at 5/6 am, flew in, and as soon as we got to the AirBnb, we were immediately given us a list of tasks (like groceries, cleanup, moving furniture, putting up decor). I donβt mind helping out, but after we spent noon-9 pm physically working, we were just worn out by the time the βfestivitiesβ began. For myself, I had flown, then worked my job all day, spent all day cooking some very complex dishes with portion sizes big enough for the entire bridal party (~ 15 people), and after that I had to do a lot of manual labor. Like if someone saw I was sitting down for a bit to take a break, I would be given another task.
- We had to repeat the same thing the next couple of days. So the schedule throughout the weekend was basically like, wake up, work like dogs to tear down the decor for theme from the previous day, put up the new decor and furniture for the next series of activities, run behind on the itinerary because the event wasnβt fully βset upβ yet, and when it was finally complete, spending another 20 or so minutes taking pictures, filming videos for TikTok and Instagram, etc., before we could finally just sit back and enjoy. And even then it was only a matter of time before we had to do tear down/set up, get ready, do groceries for the next theme/set of activities.
- I found the bride to be kind ofβ¦bossy at times. There were a couple of times I was told by the bride I wasnβt wearing enough makeup, the outfit I was wearing wasnβt cute enough for pictures, me or another bridesmaid or the MOH would be βorderedβ to do some task, getting annoyed reactions from the bride when weβd be working and one of us would try to lighten the mood with a joke, etc.
- I was one of the bridesmaids who was assigned to go out and do groceries. It was kind of annoying because I would be tasked with picking up some items from the store, I would go to the store and pick up the things we needed, Iβd be getting ready to head back to AirBnb, just to get another call on the drive back telling me that thereβs another item they need for some drinks or dessert theyβre making. I donβt mind picking up things we need, but why not put together a list before one of us heads out so this need to go back and forth doesnβt happen?
- Because the group was so large, there was a lot of cliqueyness among the bridesmaids. Some of the bridesmaids were my super close friends in college, but after this weekend, it became clear how so many of us have drifted apart. A couple of other bridesmaids I was never as close to were kind of cold, or made rude comments when Iβd try to make friendly conversation. This isnβt anyoneβs fault ofc, but Iβm just mentioning it to drive home why I felt bad after the weekend.
- A couple of the bridesmaids were bridesmaids at my own wedding, but I felt kind of bad (honestly kind of jealous) that they posted so much from this Bach, but they posted nothing during my wedding. It makes me wonder if my wedding was a bad experience/boring/ugly/not fun/etc.
- Speaking of my own wedding, after everything I did this weekend (literally buying $300 of groceries, decorating, cleaning, researching, doing dishes, catering/cooking all of the food for everyone, baking, staying out and celebrating even when I felt physically tired and nauseous), I was definitely reflecting on how the bride/my friend was during that time. And the effort was not reciprocal. She did help out a bit here and there, but I remember when I asked her to do some things like helping me apply press on nails on my dominant hand, or even just swing by and pick up the bridesmaid dress I paid for, she acted like it was an inconvenience, and that Iβd have to accommodate her. I definitely didnβt have my bridesmaids do any DIY stuff, decorating, research, etc. I mainly wanted my bridesmaids to stand up there with me in matching dresses, get on the dance floor with me, and have fun. I donβt know how successful I was with that though. In hindsight, I felt like I was sort of taken for granted, after the bride kind of did the minimum during my own wedding. She doesnβt have to of course and I didnβt expect it, but I just think itβs odd to expect so much of your friends when you wonβt do the same for them? I also had a wedding event in a different state, but she didnβt even want to fly in for that because she didnβt like the location. She did plan a really nice bridal shower for me, but months after my wedding she complained about all the work she did for it in a group chat I was in and it hurt to read; why give something as a gift to someone and then make them feel bad about it?
- This doesnβt have to do with me, but the MOH (who is also a dear friend of mine) ended up in tears a couple of times and she confided about feeling so excluded and bossed. For all my complaints about the work I did during the Bach weekend, the MOH did tenfold. And she planned most of it. Only for her to feel this way, which was awful to see. Honestly a lot of the work I did was more to help her than for the bride.
- For all the effort that was put in to making everything look the way it did, the βbehind the scenesβ were a mess. The floors were always sticky, there were always trash bags lying around and overflowing, cups halfway full of drinks, etc. It just felt really unpleasant and stressful to spend a whole weekend in that environment.

Speaker (reading the sign) : It's the short-nosed unicornfish.
Speaker (chuckles) : Haha, it's really ridiculous !

Speaker (offended) : What ? How do I resemble it ? That's absurd !
Speaker : We've been friends for so many years and you can't even see how handsome/pretty I am.

Speaker (pointing to another aquarium) : You know what, I think I found one that resembles you too. There, it's the stonefish.

Speaker : Haha, with your furrowed brows like that, the resemblance is even more obvious. You could almost pass for twins.
Speaker : I assure you, you both have the same grumpy look !

Speaker : Oh look, this tank is filled with magnificent species. That's what I meant by "full of color". It's really beautiful...

Speaker : Well, I'm not really sure, you know I'm not a big fish enthusiast.
Speaker : Okay, okay, I'll pick one.
Speaker : Hm... I think I'd go with the Emperor Angelfish. I love how the blue of its scales blends with its yellow stripes.

Speaker : This species is also called the "ocean vacuum cleaner". You can tell by the shape of its mouth, but they spend their time scouring the ocean floor for food. They can literally suck in their prey, isn't that amazing ?
Speaker (teasing) : By the way, it kinda reminds me of you when you devour your meals at the cafeteria.
(Listener gets annoyed)
Speaker : Hey hey, I'm just kidding, no need to get all worked up like that !
Speaker (still close to the Listener, softer) : Please calm down, everyone's watching us...
Speaker (sighs) : Well, you're really touchy, even though I'm just speaking the truth. You're a real glutton.
Speaker : Should I be gentler ? And why should I, huh ?

Speaker : Because the other guys/girls/people here seem all sweet with their girlfriends/boyfriends/partner ?
Speaker (embarrassed) : I... I don't see what that has to do with us...

2024.05.20 23:35 IndependentOrnery296 10 Days In Italy (Rome > Florence > Cinque Terre) - Post-trip thoughts!
Husband and I (outdoorsy 30-somethings) just got back from the most magical 10 days of blitzing through Italy and I wanted to report back on how it all went! Itinerary report followed by general takeaways below. (:
May 5 (Rome) - Landed at Rome airport around 9AM, bought tickets for the Leonardo Express / validated in station and then hopped on a train around 10ish, got to Termini for around 11AM if I remember correctly. Wandered from Termini to our airbnb in Trastavere with our backpacks on, walked through/past a lot of the sites we'd be seeing later on. Part of the walk took us down the steps so we were walking along the bank of the Tiber and wowowowowow. We were more wiped out than expected after the walk and ended up napping at our airbnb after we checked in (lol) and then put ourselves back together, did Rick Steves' audio tour of Trastavere, found a place to get dinner, and just kind of wandered around the neighborhood stopping to sip wine and eat tiramisu in different spots. It was incredible.
May 6 (Rome) - Used IT.TAXI to call a car to bring us to the drop off point for our guided tour of the Vatican. I don't regret booking this because The Vatican is, ultimately, fucking insane in its offerings of art and history and whatnot, but this was easily the busiest/most crowded/suffocating thing we did the whole trip. There were so many people our tour ended up getting diverted from the Sistine chapel 2 or 3 times, which I actually liked because it meant we got to see EVERYTHING there was to see. I think we walked ~4 miles by the end of the tour. Tour started at 9:30 and we were walking out of St. Peter's at 13:00. Walked back to our bnb, passed out until 15:00, and then walked back into the heart of the city for our 17:45 Colosseum entry slot. Took our time getting there and let ourselves get distracted by any steps we wanted to run up or things we wanted to get closer to, etc. Waited behind maybe 5 people before getting our tickets checked for the colosseum, did Rick Steve's audio tour once inside, amazing. Originally we were planning on doing the forum afterwards but did not realize the forum closes early! Ended up spontaneously catching a bus to Appian Way and wandered around some of the park for sunset - not the part of the park we meant to wander around, but it was pretty nonetheless. Tried to catch a bus back but it never came, so we called another car via it.taxi back to our neighborhood. Grabbed dinner and gelato.
May 7 (Rome) - Hopped on a local bus to San Paolo train station, took a train out to Ostia Antica. Did the Rick Steve's audio tour (this is a running theme) and wandered the ruins for a couple of hours. The red poppies popping out of everything could make me cry, honestly. We were basically the only people there all morning. When we left around 11:00 there were hoards of schooltrips showing up, but we had the whole place to ourselves. Crazy. Hopped back on the train and took it to San Paolo, where we dipped into the metro and took a different train to the Colosseum area. Grabbed some street food and wandered - at midday this area is WAY more packed than in the late afternoon, like how it was the day before when we were there. The main line to the forum was stupid long, but there was no line at the Palatine Hill entrance just a little bit away from the Arch. We entered through there and wandered, did the Rick Steve's audio tour, wandered some more. Caught a bus to Campo d'fiori, and did most of Rick Steve's heart of rome walk. When we got to the pantheon we got in line to buy tickets - one of the machines was accepting money but was out of printer paper - we were able to snag one of the last printed tickets from the other machine around 17:00 and get inside the Pantheon. We ended up being two of like 10 people inside, this was a definite highlight. Did Rick Steve's pantheon audio tour and marveled at everything. Got kicked out around 17:45, continued the Heart of Rome walk and ended it ourselves at the Trevi Fountain. It was slammed but not hard to get close to the fountain itself. Walked back to Trastavere and watched sunset from one of the bridges over the Tiber. Wandered into a restaurant named something ending in "il massi" in trastevere - inadvertently one of the best meals of the whole trip. Hung out in Piazza Trilussa while a street performer played Bob Marley to a very happy crowd, went home, passed out.
May 8 (Rome -> Florence) - Grabbed coffee and pastries and ate them in Piazza Trilussa after checking out of our bnb. Trekked up Janiculum hill (with our bags) and hung out there for about an hour taking in the incredible view before walking down the other side (towards the Vatican?) and catching a bus to Termini, where we hopped on a pre-booked bullet train from Rome to Florence. Walked from the train station to our place in Oltrarno, close to Pitti and Ponte Vecchio - felt a kind of like, culture shock, I guess? Rome and Florence are so, so different. We stayed in a really cool airbnb on the top floor of what used to be a tower, I think? There was a plaque out front. A lot of stairs to go up but definitely worth it. Dropped our stuff off, grabbed some gelato, made it over for our 17:15 tour time of Accademia to see David. The line situation was NUTS but there was a method to the madness. The poster scammers were EVERYWHERE. Once we got inside it was very cool - David does not disappoint - we did the Rick Steves audio tour and wandered. Once that was over we made our way back towards Oltrarno and realized we were close to Gustapizza and like ~15 minutes out from it opening. I'm not about to wait in line for hours for food, but I can wait 30 minutes. Got in the to-go line, ordered two pizzas right after they opened (husband went out and bough a bottle of wine in the meantime), and we ate the pizzas and drank the wine in the nearby piazza. This was one of my favorite meals. I fucking love a piazza.
May 9 (Florence) - Slept in a bit! Did Rick Steve's Florence walk. Were originally going to do the duomo climb but changed our minds at the last minute - the amount of people waiting made it seem like it was going to be really claustrophobic - I don't regret this at all. Ended getting tickets to the Orsanmichele church / museum kind of on a whime (it was suggested in the Rick Steve's audio), I think 8 euros a pop. The church was beautiful, but the museum must be a state secret. We were the only 2 people in there, and the second floor is all HUGE windows with unobstructed views of the whole florence skyline, from within the skyline. It was dead quiet inside. No crowds. And incredible views. We soaked it up in here for a while, and then after the tour was done (around Palazza Vecchio), we wandered into San Frediano (I heard it was a cool area), got some of the best sandwiches from some random place, had Salciccia for the first time and didn't realize until we were like halfway through eating it (so good, omg), and hung out at a bar near a park for a while before catching a bus (I think 12) up to San Minianto. I read in a thread that this was a better viewpoint than the Piazzale Michelangelo with less crowds, and holy smokes. The view was insane. The monks closed the grounds right before sunset, but we were able to post up in one of the nooks in the wall right outside of the grounds and watch the sun go down. No crowd at all. Magical. Hiked back down on foot through Piazzale Michelangelo and stopped for a second to grab a beer and snap a photo, but it was SO so soooooooo crowded. Kept walking and wandered around Palazzo Vecchio area, grabbed dinner somewhere and headed home.
May 10 (Panzano) - Got our rental car and made our way to Panzano for a lunch reservation at Dario's. I was worried this was going to be hokey or full of old people or something, but this ended up being a huge highlight. We were sat at a table with a bunch of guys weekending together from Milan, a couple from Brazil, and some other folks from Northern Italy, and we all just chatted and ate together and drank way too much chianti and stayed until we basically were asked to leave. It was amazing. What was supposed to be a two hour lunch turned into a six hour hang out. The food was incredible, obviously, but making friends with such an assortment of strangers was really, really special. Wandered around Panzano a little bit after we all parted ways and then made our way to the carpark in Florence. We had reserved a spot at a place a week or so in advance and paid once we got there in person, it was great. Grabbed some more of the best sandwiches I've ever had in my life from some hole in the wall place in Oltrarno and hung out at our airbnb drinking wine until bedtime.
May 11 (Montepulciano) - Slept in a bit! Grabbed a capuccino at the local spot we'd found near our place, got our rental car, and set off for a day spent wandering around in Montepulciano. Didn't really have a set in stone plan for the day, but we parked for free near a bus station and then caught a cheap shuttle up to the top of the town. Hopped off at the top (the driver could tell we had no idea where "the top" was going to be and kindly flagged us when we were supposed to get off), and really spent the whole day just wandering up and down the town. The wine was all very good, everywhere. The food also. And catching the sunset from the top was probably one of the most incredible sunsets I've seen anywhere ever. Highly recommend. Drove back after dark and the highway was CLOSED so we spent most of the drive on a very, very small road carrying diverted highway traffic in both directions. It was a little scary because of the buses and trucks, but we lived. Dropped our car off at the return lot, caught a tram back to termini, and walked back to our place. Got in around 23:00. LONG, beautiful day.
May 12 (Florence -> Cinque Terre) - Got coffees at some third wave coffee shop instead of the usual spot because the usual spot was slammed and we had our bags with us - this place was fine but definitely geared towards Americans. And then walked to Termini and caught a train to Pisa, hopped out and switched platforms, and then caught a train to Monterosso Al Mare, landed around 15:00. Met up with our airbnb host, who was SO KIND, and walked up the 150 steps to the room we'd be staying in (not in the old side of town), it was amazing. Rooftop access. And tucked into the forested hill behind the other buildings. It was directly over the train but, surprisingly, that didn't bother us at all. We dropped our stuff off and wandered back out, got some foccaccia (holy shit) and walked into the old town. We wandered deep into the old town and up some road surrounded by vineyards and found some open but OLD woodsy staircase path that brought us up.... we did not know where we were going but did not care. Ended up popping out in the back of the cemetery at the top of the hill. Nobody was there, but if you walk ~50 meters or so away from the cemetery and down the road, there's an incredible panoramic viewpoint of the whole area. Wandered around here, then down an old-looking path around the cemetery that brought us to the front of the place, which is where the crowds (really not a lot of people) of people were. May 13 (Cinque Terre) - I think this was my favorite day. I don't know. I'm a sucker for large bodies of water and generally just being in nature. We got down for breakfast around 10AM, and droves of people were getting off of the train to start the hike that everyone does. Currently only the Monterosso -> Vernazza -> Corniglia sections are open. We were planning on doing the hike first thing, but really, really didn't want to deal with the crowds of it all. So we bought our trail pass ticket and then decided to change our plans around. We ended up catching the ferry from Monterosso Al Mare and taking it down to Riomaggiore, 45 minute trip total (15 euros a head and you get to see every town from the water... so worth it), where we ran around a little bit and split a cone of fried anchovies from Tutti Frutti (10/10). Hopped on the train and took it to Corniglia, wandered around here a bit and then hopped on the hiking trail and hiked Corniglia -> Vernazza. Definitely recommend. The views were stunning, and we only saw a couple of people in either direction since we started a bit later in the day / I assume a bunch of people only do the first chunk of the hike when starting in Monterosso. The portion we did took us about 65 minutes, and we stopped to re-apply sunscreen and gawk at the views a couple of times. Did a quick lap in Vernazza but were itchy to get to the beach at this point, so hopped on the train to Monterosso, used our trail passes to get free access to the train bathrooms and change into our swimsuits (we brought a small, roll-up-able hiking sling bag for this purpose), bought a towel for 10 euros from one of the stalls near the beach and hit the free section of the beach in Fegina. Some folks but nothing crazy. Laid our stuff down and spent the afternoon swimming in the sea. The locals said the water was cold but it was beautiful - 69 degrees Fahrenheit or so - much warmer than the ocean water we're used to in California lol. After hanging out here until around 18:00 or so, we made our way back up to our room (150 steps!!!!!), showered, put ourselves together, and made it back out for dinner around 21:00. We were able to get a table at a restaurant in the old part of town and if I recommend any place, it's this one: Tosca Bistrot. The chef was out and about helping the waitstaff, she stopped and chatted with us for a bit, and the food was the best food we had the whole trip. Anchovies in lemon and oil, trufie with pesto, poached sea bass, tiramisu and a pinoleta, which is a tart I've never heard of or had but now cannot stop thinking about. It was amazing and special and sweet. Walked out of here and sat on the beach in the dark for a little bit near some street performers before making our way home.

Initially we were going to spend two nights in Monterosso Al Mare but it felt dicey having to take a three hour train ride to a city where you then would have to catch a flight, so we opted to head to Milan to spend our last night before flying to limit any chance of craziness. We checked out of our bnb in the morning, spent a few hours wandering around with our bags, got some focaccia and ate it on the beach in the shade of the sidewalk overhand, and stopped at a local market to buy some fresh fruit for the train ride. This turned out to be a mistake. We bought two peaches, a nectarine, and some lemony cookies. Husband and I split the peaches and nectarine on the train ride, and just as we get to our hotel in Milan he starts complaining of nausea / upset stomach. He ended up having wild food poisoning. We washed the fruit before eating it but I guess something similar happened to him years ago when he was in Romania - something about his guts just not being familiar with the bacteria on the skin of the fruit or something. I was totally fine, but I historically have really strong guts. It ended up pouring rain the entire afternoon we were in Milan, anyway, so while it wasn't the most ideal way to end the trip it was also not the worst. Our hotel room was small enough that it was the perfect place for him to need to be close to a toilet, and we just opened the windows and listened to the rain and the locals being raucous into the night. Thankfully he was through it by morning and was able to get some sleep! But that was basically that!!!
BIGGEST TAKEAWAYS - I have to assume this applies to anywhere, but our favorite moments / things really ended up being the little everyday things as opposed to the big tourist attractions. Like the local cafes we ended up going to every morning, hanging out in piazzas with the birds, chatting with people, and letting ourselves wander down any weird little path that caught our attention. And the gelato. - We tried our best to not over-schedule things and really only book the attractions we wanted to see instead of what we felt we HAD to see. We're not huge art people so we felt the Uffizzi and such would have been lost on us, were more interested in eating and hanging out with people so we prioritized that, etc. - Public transit is so wildly easy to use here that you should absolutely lean into relying on it. The bus schedules were pretty easy to read wherever they were posted, google maps' routes were usually spot-on, and if the bus doesn't show up (in Rome this seems to happen sometimes) and you don't want to walk, it.taxi worked just like uber. - If you can book the BIG ATTRACTIONS towards the end of the day, do it. Crowds are thinner and you have a better chance of smaller numbers being inside. We booked Colosseum/Forum/Palatine Hill pass + Vatican (with a tour) + Accademia + time slot to Ostia Antica in advance and let ourselves sort of figure out the rest of the day-to-day as best we could. - Aside from lodgings and the car rental, the only other thing we booked in advance was the bullet train. It was pretty packed so I recommend you do the same, plus I think it's cheaper if you book it in advance. - Idk if Rick Steves gets a bad rap or whatever but as two people who didn't WANT to book tours to everything and also could not afford to book tours to everything, the guided Rick Steves walks were amazing. They give you so much context to wherever you are and there were absolutely some things we saw - a completely empty church with a beautiful rose garden and singing nuns comes to mind - that we never would have stumbled upon without them. Definitely recommend. Husband and I literally just split a pair of airpods, made sure to download the audio tours when we were on wifi, and listened and walked. In this vein, definitely bring a good portable charger.
I can honestly say this was a magical, life altering trip for me. I have never taken two weeks to just go have fun somewhere like I did with this, and it was amazing. Ultimately I think the most important thing is not letting yourself be too tied to a schedule, giving yourself some leeway/grace, figuring out specifically what's important for YOU to see, and just leaning in to living in wherever you are. It was amazing. I wish we had more time and I can't wait to go back.

May 5 (Rome) - Landed at Rome airport around 9AM, bought tickets for the Leonardo Express / validated in station and then hopped on a train around 10ish, got to Termini for around 11AM if I remember correctly. Wandered from Termini to our airbnb in Trastavere with our backpacks on, walked through/past a lot of the sites we'd be seeing later on. Part of the walk took us down the steps so we were walking along the bank of the Tiber and wowowowowow. We were more wiped out than expected after the walk and ended up napping at our airbnb after we checked in (lol) and then put ourselves back together, did Rick Steves' audio tour of Trastavere, found a place to get dinner, and just kind of wandered around the neighborhood stopping to sip wine and eat tiramisu in different spots. It was incredible.
May 6 (Rome) - Used IT.TAXI to call a car to bring us to the drop off point for our guided tour of the Vatican. I don't regret booking this because The Vatican is, ultimately, fucking insane in its offerings of art and history and whatnot, but this was easily the busiest/most crowded/suffocating thing we did the whole trip. There were so many people our tour ended up getting diverted from the Sistine chapel 2 or 3 times, which I actually liked because it meant we got to see EVERYTHING there was to see. I think we walked ~4 miles by the end of the tour. Tour started at 9:30 and we were walking out of St. Peter's at 13:00. Walked back to our bnb, passed out until 15:00, and then walked back into the heart of the city for our 17:45 Colosseum entry slot. Took our time getting there and let ourselves get distracted by any steps we wanted to run up or things we wanted to get closer to, etc. Waited behind maybe 5 people before getting our tickets checked for the colosseum, did Rick Steve's audio tour once inside, amazing. Originally we were planning on doing the forum afterwards but did not realize the forum closes early! Ended up spontaneously catching a bus to Appian Way and wandered around some of the park for sunset - not the part of the park we meant to wander around, but it was pretty nonetheless. Tried to catch a bus back but it never came, so we called another car via it.taxi back to our neighborhood. Grabbed dinner and gelato.
May 7 (Rome) - Hopped on a local bus to San Paolo train station, took a train out to Ostia Antica. Did the Rick Steve's audio tour (this is a running theme) and wandered the ruins for a couple of hours. The red poppies popping out of everything could make me cry, honestly. We were basically the only people there all morning. When we left around 11:00 there were hoards of schooltrips showing up, but we had the whole place to ourselves. Crazy. Hopped back on the train and took it to San Paolo, where we dipped into the metro and took a different train to the Colosseum area. Grabbed some street food and wandered - at midday this area is WAY more packed than in the late afternoon, like how it was the day before when we were there. The main line to the forum was stupid long, but there was no line at the Palatine Hill entrance just a little bit away from the Arch. We entered through there and wandered, did the Rick Steve's audio tour, wandered some more. Caught a bus to Campo d'fiori, and did most of Rick Steve's heart of rome walk. When we got to the pantheon we got in line to buy tickets - one of the machines was accepting money but was out of printer paper - we were able to snag one of the last printed tickets from the other machine around 17:00 and get inside the Pantheon. We ended up being two of like 10 people inside, this was a definite highlight. Did Rick Steve's pantheon audio tour and marveled at everything. Got kicked out around 17:45, continued the Heart of Rome walk and ended it ourselves at the Trevi Fountain. It was slammed but not hard to get close to the fountain itself. Walked back to Trastavere and watched sunset from one of the bridges over the Tiber. Wandered into a restaurant named something ending in "il massi" in trastevere - inadvertently one of the best meals of the whole trip. Hung out in Piazza Trilussa while a street performer played Bob Marley to a very happy crowd, went home, passed out.
May 8 (Rome -> Florence) - Grabbed coffee and pastries and ate them in Piazza Trilussa after checking out of our bnb. Trekked up Janiculum hill (with our bags) and hung out there for about an hour taking in the incredible view before walking down the other side (towards the Vatican?) and catching a bus to Termini, where we hopped on a pre-booked bullet train from Rome to Florence. Walked from the train station to our place in Oltrarno, close to Pitti and Ponte Vecchio - felt a kind of like, culture shock, I guess? Rome and Florence are so, so different. We stayed in a really cool airbnb on the top floor of what used to be a tower, I think? There was a plaque out front. A lot of stairs to go up but definitely worth it. Dropped our stuff off, grabbed some gelato, made it over for our 17:15 tour time of Accademia to see David. The line situation was NUTS but there was a method to the madness. The poster scammers were EVERYWHERE. Once we got inside it was very cool - David does not disappoint - we did the Rick Steves audio tour and wandered. Once that was over we made our way back towards Oltrarno and realized we were close to Gustapizza and like ~15 minutes out from it opening. I'm not about to wait in line for hours for food, but I can wait 30 minutes. Got in the to-go line, ordered two pizzas right after they opened (husband went out and bough a bottle of wine in the meantime), and we ate the pizzas and drank the wine in the nearby piazza. This was one of my favorite meals. I fucking love a piazza.
May 9 (Florence) - Slept in a bit! Did Rick Steve's Florence walk. Were originally going to do the duomo climb but changed our minds at the last minute - the amount of people waiting made it seem like it was going to be really claustrophobic - I don't regret this at all. Ended getting tickets to the Orsanmichele church / museum kind of on a whime (it was suggested in the Rick Steve's audio), I think 8 euros a pop. The church was beautiful, but the museum must be a state secret. We were the only 2 people in there, and the second floor is all HUGE windows with unobstructed views of the whole florence skyline, from within the skyline. It was dead quiet inside. No crowds. And incredible views. We soaked it up in here for a while, and then after the tour was done (around Palazza Vecchio), we wandered into San Frediano (I heard it was a cool area), got some of the best sandwiches from some random place, had Salciccia for the first time and didn't realize until we were like halfway through eating it (so good, omg), and hung out at a bar near a park for a while before catching a bus (I think 12) up to San Minianto. I read in a thread that this was a better viewpoint than the Piazzale Michelangelo with less crowds, and holy smokes. The view was insane. The monks closed the grounds right before sunset, but we were able to post up in one of the nooks in the wall right outside of the grounds and watch the sun go down. No crowd at all. Magical. Hiked back down on foot through Piazzale Michelangelo and stopped for a second to grab a beer and snap a photo, but it was SO so soooooooo crowded. Kept walking and wandered around Palazzo Vecchio area, grabbed dinner somewhere and headed home.
May 10 (Panzano) - Got our rental car and made our way to Panzano for a lunch reservation at Dario's. I was worried this was going to be hokey or full of old people or something, but this ended up being a huge highlight. We were sat at a table with a bunch of guys weekending together from Milan, a couple from Brazil, and some other folks from Northern Italy, and we all just chatted and ate together and drank way too much chianti and stayed until we basically were asked to leave. It was amazing. What was supposed to be a two hour lunch turned into a six hour hang out. The food was incredible, obviously, but making friends with such an assortment of strangers was really, really special. Wandered around Panzano a little bit after we all parted ways and then made our way to the carpark in Florence. We had reserved a spot at a place a week or so in advance and paid once we got there in person, it was great. Grabbed some more of the best sandwiches I've ever had in my life from some hole in the wall place in Oltrarno and hung out at our airbnb drinking wine until bedtime.
May 11 (Montepulciano) - Slept in a bit! Grabbed a capuccino at the local spot we'd found near our place, got our rental car, and set off for a day spent wandering around in Montepulciano. Didn't really have a set in stone plan for the day, but we parked for free near a bus station and then caught a cheap shuttle up to the top of the town. Hopped off at the top (the driver could tell we had no idea where "the top" was going to be and kindly flagged us when we were supposed to get off), and really spent the whole day just wandering up and down the town. The wine was all very good, everywhere. The food also. And catching the sunset from the top was probably one of the most incredible sunsets I've seen anywhere ever. Highly recommend. Drove back after dark and the highway was CLOSED so we spent most of the drive on a very, very small road carrying diverted highway traffic in both directions. It was a little scary because of the buses and trucks, but we lived. Dropped our car off at the return lot, caught a tram back to termini, and walked back to our place. Got in around 23:00. LONG, beautiful day.
May 12 (Florence -> Cinque Terre) - Got coffees at some third wave coffee shop instead of the usual spot because the usual spot was slammed and we had our bags with us - this place was fine but definitely geared towards Americans. And then walked to Termini and caught a train to Pisa, hopped out and switched platforms, and then caught a train to Monterosso Al Mare, landed around 15:00. Met up with our airbnb host, who was SO KIND, and walked up the 150 steps to the room we'd be staying in (not in the old side of town), it was amazing. Rooftop access. And tucked into the forested hill behind the other buildings. It was directly over the train but, surprisingly, that didn't bother us at all. We dropped our stuff off and wandered back out, got some foccaccia (holy shit) and walked into the old town. We wandered deep into the old town and up some road surrounded by vineyards and found some open but OLD woodsy staircase path that brought us up.... we did not know where we were going but did not care. Ended up popping out in the back of the cemetery at the top of the hill. Nobody was there, but if you walk ~50 meters or so away from the cemetery and down the road, there's an incredible panoramic viewpoint of the whole area. Wandered around here, then down an old-looking path around the cemetery that brought us to the front of the place, which is where the crowds (really not a lot of people) of people were. Going on a friendβs trip to Japan for the 1st time in July with 6 friends around 25-30yrs old.
We will be landing in Tokyo (hotel in Shibuya area) & staying 4 nights then a day trip to Mount Fuji then to Kyoto & Osaka for 3 full days then back to Tokyo for another 2 full days then departing the next day.

Have booked flight, hotels & USJ so far. Will be booking Shibuya Sky soon & would love to go at sunset hours. Looking into a full day trip tour with a company for Mount Fuji (any recommendations or suggestions welcome)

Have booked flight, hotels & USJ so far. Will be booking Shibuya Sky soon & would love to go at sunset hours. Looking into a full day trip tour with a company for Mount Fuji (any recommendations or suggestions welcome)
Thinking about booking a tea ceremony and samurai experience in Kyoto (would love any insights on those experiences)
