I mean they are giving her the secret sauce. She’s been infected for at least 10 years and she isn’t contagious. They should be able to synthesize the antigens from her blood and get something useful.

2024.05.21 13:04 ozone_ghost Movies that can help Kids learn Programming Abilities

Movies that can help Kids learn Programming Abilities
I want to start posting movies that could inspire kids to get into programming.
To start, here are three movies that can introduce kids to some programming concepts and mindsets:

1. War Games (1983)

What it teaches: Importance of perseverance, problem-solving, thinking outside the box, and the value of trying different approaches even if they seem unlikely.
Story: The movie follows a young hacker, David Lightman (played by Matthew Broderick), who unknowingly accesses a U.S. military supercomputer programmed to simulate and control nuclear war scenarios.
Persistance and Outside the box thinking: David's determination shines when he uses social engineering and a brute-force attack to guess the password to a restricted system. He meticulously tries various combinations until he cracks it, demonstrating the value of persistence and thinking outside the box.
https://preview.redd.it/po0hlxxcdr1d1.jpg?width=500&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=fd85971a597fcc12c67850232cc57d56296cbc45
Hacker Mindset: Another pivotal moment is when David is captured and held in a military base. Using his wits and knowledge of technology, he manages to escape a locked room by short-circuiting an electronic door lock. This scene showcases his ingenuity and ability to think outside the box, traits that are crucial for any programmer and problem solver.
During the movie, David, tries different approaches even if they seem unlikely or naive, a great skill that we tend to lose in formal education.

2. Tron (1982)

What it teaches: Visualizes abstract programming concepts like programs, firewalls, and bits as tangible, interactive elements.
Story: The movie's protagonist, Kevin Flynn (played by Jeff Bridges), is a computer programmer who gets digitized and enters the virtual realm. "Tron" transports viewers into a digital world where programs are personified and interact within a computer system.
3D Representation of Programming Elements: Tron visualizes abstract programming concepts like programs, firewalls, and bits as tangible, interactive elements. This visualization can help kids understand these concepts better. Two examples: The character Tron (Bruce Boxleitner) represents a security program, and Bit is a small, binary entity that can only say "yes" or "no."
Bit: yes. no. yes. no. yes, yes, yes, yes, yes
With my 4-year-old son, we took inspiration from "Tron" to create these elements using LEGO toys, turning abstract programming concepts into physical objects. For instance, we represented a variable as a cuboid that could hold values. I have evolved this idea into a board game to teach the fundamentals of programming and it really helps him to see, touch and manipulate concepts.
Tron Recognizer using Lego bricks.

3. Tron: Legacy (2010)

(Might be more suitable for older children).
What it teaches: Artificial life, evolutionary algorithms, evolution strategies, evolutionary programming, and genetic algorithms, Game of Life, origin of life, morphogenesis.
Story: "Tron: Legacy" continues the story, this time focusing on Kevin Flynn's son, Sam Flynn (Garrett Hedlund), who enters the digital world to find his missing father.
Evolutionary Algorithms: The movie introduces ISOs (Isomorphic Algorithms), a spontaneously generated form of digital life within the Grid. This concept can help children discover artifitial life, artifitial intelligence, evolutionary algorithms etc.
Artificial Life: The spontaneous generation of life within electronic components/chips, as portrayed by the ISOs, brings the question of what is life and the possibility of life existing inside a digital / electronic world.
BTW: Could you tell a quote by Joshua (WOPR) in WarGames and Kevin Flynn in Tron Legacy that are almost identical?
https://preview.redd.it/6zsy3hi3er1d1.png?width=421&format=png&auto=webp&s=453f66d4c1b091dd8d3769192562b748757bb22c
I hope you enjoyed it!
Do you have other movies you would like to share that could help kids learn programming or develop a programming mindset?

2024.05.21 13:03 Charming-Net1084 HELP! Tramadol and percocet withdrawal

Hi! My mom recently went through knee surgery april 1st and was prescribed tramadol and percocet for the pain. They told her to only take as much as she needs for the pain so she did what she needed to do to ease the pain. From april to I want to say two weeks ago she started to have these really vivid dreams. I would hear her cry in her sleep and yell for help and it worried me. That same week she started to get very very depressed say things how she doesn’t want to be here anymore doesn’t want to do anything etc. I started to assume it was the pills because of how addictive they are. Two days ago she stopped taking both completely and she can’t sleep now. She’s also doing this thing with the right side of her body where she starts to tremble (it scared me ngl). We spoke with her doctors (they suck) and pretty much told me that it can be the pills to have her drink water and just useless tbh. I hate seeing my mom like this and I just really want to help her get through this. She has an appointment with her primary doctor to look into therapy sessions for her depression because she’s also still grieving the loss of my grandma (it’s been over 10 years). If anyone can give me ideas or anything to help her out from home. I wanted to take her to the er because i’m not liking her trembles that she gets. Please. Thank you.

2024.05.21 13:02 GoldenDrachi Windows 10 - Client PC scrolls endlessly without user input

Hey everyone,
One of our clients has a problem, that we are unable to solve currently. I hope that someone here may have experience with this problem and a solution he or she can share.
Problem:
Since a restart today (no new Windows update installed), the PC started to scroll without an end. As soon as the cursor is above a scrollable window (for example, Outlook, a Webbrowser, Windows Explorer or the device manager) the window scrolls up- or downwards. PC is a Windows 10 Pro Dell Precision 5820. 64 GB of RAM. Intel(R) Xeon(R) W-2145 CPU @ 3.70GHz.
What we already tried:
The only thing that helped was the uninstalling of the drivers. This is not a permanent solution though. As soon as the PC is rebooted, the problem reappers.
We would like to prevent a new installation of the PC or a different PC if possible, but thats our only hope currently. Does anyone have some more ideas?

2024.05.21 13:02 ThisJellyfish1289 Infuriating MIL

My bf (22m) and I (20f) have been LC/NC with MIL since last July. I blocked her on Facebook in may after sending her a nasty her for missing her son’s 21st birthday party. She had 2 months notice to the party and made excuse after excuse about why shouldn’t come, ultimately it ended up being because we didn’t want her alcoholic husband to be there and she refused to go with out him. She never even sent him a birthday card.
My bfs birthday is at the beginning of may and this year MILs husband sent him a message asking what he wanted for his bday during the second week of April. My bf does not like him, wants nothing to do with him and has explained this to his mom. So the message was never read because he has his notifications blocked, I saw it about a week and half after while looking on his phone and told my bf. He was annoyed but just txted MILs husband back, we didn’t hear anything for over a week and then she invited us up to dinner at her house. They live about and hour away so we said sure whenever is fine, we just want to be home before 10 pm, they wanted to wait until we all had a day off so we agreed. They were waiting to getting Sundays off so we could come up but my schedule just changed and now I have to work Sundays so I told my bf to let his mom know. She said that she is trying to find a new job because they cut her hours at work, MIL and her husband always work at the same place and her hours always get cut…
I just want to vent because this is not how my family is, birthdays are special and to be celebrated with all of your favorites because you need to enjoy life. I wish this women would even take a second of her own time to spend with her son, even on the phone without her husband talking too. She didn’t send him a card or anything this year either. We live and hour away and she commuted to a job an hour and 15 mins away for over a year!!!! I want to believe she cares about her son but everything she’s ever done to him and treats him tells me she doesn’t.

2024.05.21 13:02 DikkeKnoepert Deity still feeling too easy

I've been playing this game off and on for the past 4 or so years, mostly playing lower difficulties because of people saying deity is another game. I recently went from emperor to deity and i don't really struggle at all. I saw some people saying they have to restart 8/10 deity games because of agressive ai, but i haven't had that issue myself.
It's also a bit frustrating how stupid the ai is, i was trying to go for a science victory and saw that mongolia had 2/5 steps of the space race completed before i even had down a space port. I thought surely now i've lost. After those 2 steps he just completely gave up and started mass producing giant death robots to fight a pointless war with Nubia. Maybe i'm doing something wrong? Maybe i'm playing too easy civs

2024.05.21 13:02 Comfortable_Fish_616 Tips about career and financial stuffs

Hi,
I'm Daniel from Spain, and I'll be turning 15 this month. With my birthday coming up, I've been thinking a lot about my future. Like many others my age, I don't really have any clear ideas about what I want to be when I grow up, and I know very little about financial matters. For example, I'm unsure about things like banks, credit cards, interest, rent, and managing money.
In school, I'm taking a course called "Informatik" (Computer Science). I'm interested in it, but I'm not sure if I'm creative enough to pursue a career in this field. I also play football as a hobby, but I don't think it’s a viable career path for me.
I moved to Germany three years ago and have learned the language quite well. I'm currently attending a Realschule, and if everything goes well, I have two more years to go. I know I need to decide what kind of place I want to study at next, but I’m not sure about my options and what they involve.
My main goal is to have a stable life. I don’t aspire to be a millionaire, but I definitely don't want to end up homeless. This is why I need to understand financial matters better. My parents say that many parents expect their children to start living independently once they turn 18. I want to be prepared for that.
My parents, who are from Africa, didn't have the same educational opportunities that I have. I don’t want to work extremely long hours just to make ends meet. I also don’t plan to have a partner right now, as I’ve heard that can be expensive.
So, if anyone reads this, could you please give me some tips on choosing a career and managing finances effectively? I’d really appreciate any advice.
Thank you,
Daniel

2024.05.21 13:02 twofacetoo MGS3 Foxhound rank - any tips?

Hey all, been playing the games on console for years, got the Steam re-releases when they came out, and as of yesterday I have every achievement for MGS3...... except for the FOXHOUND one, attained by achieving the rank of 'Foxhound' at the end of the game.
To clarify, both for posterity and as a general reminder, attaining the Foxhound rank requires:
My current plan is to play through the game on Extreme difficulty at least once, playing normally but taking out the bosses nonlethally to get their special camos, as well as generally timing myself and practicing to see how fast I can get through the game total.
Once that's finished, I'm planning to start a replay with the unlocked camos in order to try and get the Foxhound rank. I'm anticipating a LOT of difficulty with this, so I'd appreciate any tips and advice anyone can give me.

2024.05.21 13:01 HeidiInWonderland The truth hurts. Who said the truth would set you free?

Written by both Heidi and Lita. Lita has to leave early for her internship so Heidi is posting this.
We had a very long, difficult, and important conversation with our mothers last night. We are posting this with their permission, hoping that it might help others like us.
It's hard for us to imagine any other 16-year-olds having a more wonderful year than we have had. How many people find their life partners at our young age? We trained our bodies, dove into our respective art forms, gained insight into our future careers, earned/saved a lot of money, made many friends, explored Buddhism, and joined two families into one.
But we were building a new family on a foundation of deceit and this is what had to change. Back to our conversation.
"We had led you to believe we met at school volleyball team practice back in September. We told you we discovered our soulmates and we were queer. From there we lived hard and well, became a family of six, and then everything else followed. We don't regret a second.
"We just left out one fact...we met and began our relationship one year earlier when we were in 9th grade. We had kept it secret from you. Sound familiar? It is like the story of Emma Nolan and Alyssa Greene in The Prom."
It is hard to describe the look in their eyes. We saw disbelief, shock, hurt, anger, and mostly a sense of betrayal.
Muma: How did you really meet?
Lita: Actually, we told you the story. In fact, we have been leaving clues all over the place kind of hoping we would be discovered.
Heidi: This goes back to September 2022. I was on the crosstown bus. I saw some boys get on. One stayed in the front and the others placed themselves in the aisle going down. The boy in the front grabbed a girl's phone and they passed it to each other. The boy at the end got the phone and walked out of the rear door. I had seen the entire thing and just followed him. He thought he had committed the perfect crime and I approached him. "I saw everything. I know your face, what you are wearing, and your sneakers. I know your friends. Give me the phone and I won't say a word." He did. I walked back to the bus and there was the girl with the bus driver and a couple of cops at the side of the bus. She was sobbing and they were trying to comfort her. I went up, told them what had happened, and gave her the phone back.
Mom: I remember the story. And you are saying that the girl you helped was Lita.
Muma: And the little heroine you told Pupa and me about was Heidi?
Lita: Yes. I was an absolute wreck, completely unconsolable. I felt violated and humiliated. The girl grabbed me by the arm and simply said "Come, let's sit down." She brought me to a cute ice cream restaurant she knew near Bloomingdale's. What's your favorite flavor? I said Plain Vanilla. What's yours? Chocolate. We looked at each other's skin and just had to laugh.
Heidi: I can't describe how I was feeling while we eating ice cream. Waves and waves and waves of emotions hit me.
Lita: All I could do was look Heidi in the eyes and hold her hand.
Mom: I remember that story very clearly.
Lita: We exchanged numbers and IG. Then came texts, calls, secret hookups, the first kiss, and the rest.
Heidi: It was like The King And I, Hello Young Lovers.
Lita: It was High School Admissions time and I encouraged Heidi to audition for LaGuardia for the 10th grade.
Mom: So that was what that was all about?
Muma: But I don't understand why you felt a need to keep your relationship a secret for an entire year!
This was really the hardest part of the conversation. We talked about all the emotions we were experiencing. What, we are in love? We are lesbians? We are sneaking behind our parents backs? We are watching lesbian porn and acting it out? What, I am with a black/white girl. All this shame at once and we couldn't figure a way out until Girls Volleyball. We even left some hints on this blog in case you read it.
Muma: What is most painful to me is that this was the time you needed your mothers the most and you went through the entire year all alone.
We are four strong woman. We were at a place far beyond "How dare you? This has to end. You are grounded. Scotland is off." There was thoughtful silence, long looks into each other's eyes, and then cuddling on the couch and watching The Good Doctor.
We all had the same thought. How are we going to tell Dad and Pupa?

2024.05.21 13:01 BurningRoast What jobs in Singapore that will probably die out in 10-20 years due to rapid advancement of technology?

So I’m currently studying an accounting course hoping to be an accountant/auditor one day and I have this impending doom that in the future, accountants might be replaced by A.I since all they need to do is scan documents and automatically put and update numbers in
It also got me thinking what other jobs are being at risk with the rapid advancement in technology? There’s been robots serving food in restaurants lately like Haidilao so another job in the future might be servers. Cashiers might also lose their job with online orders being on the rise and some convenient stores having a cashierless outlet

2024.05.21 13:01 robotswilcry AIO: My friend has claimed I'm a bully

I (29F) have been friends with a married couple W (32M) and L (31F) for a few years now. I am closer with W but I do consider L a friend too, we met through a mutual friend S (30F). I only ever hang out with them as a couple, never really one on one with either of them, and 9/10 times we hung out as a group with other mutual friends.
Recently, out of the blue, W hit me up to let me know that L has been upset with me for months and thinks I am bullying her. I apologised for hurting her but also asked if I could have an example of my behaviour because I genuinely could not recall being anything but nice to her. He gave me one example of me explaining something and apparently when I repeated myself, my tone sounded 'slightly annoyed'. I assured him I was not annoyed and asked for more examples but he said it had apparently been an on/off pattern of behaviour, in her words, for months and I needed to contact her personally and apologise again. A lot of other stuff happened in this convo where he basically said she lets things like this build up and she hates being criticised and she gets defensive and pushes people away and isn't close to anyone other than him and etc. I asked to talk to her but he said she's too angry and refuses to speak with me, and we need some space.
I reached out to S, and some other mutual friends, asking for an unbiased opinion and if I had ever been mean or rude to L. They all said I had been nothing but kind to her and I had nothing to apologise for.
I didn't hear from the couple for a month and a half until I reached out again. I called W in tears, saying I just wanted the courtesy of knowing what was going on as I cannot handle this stress in my life right now (I had been going through a lot in the past few months, which they knew, including my Mother being diagnosed with cancer). I said it's fine if we all cannot be friends anymore, but just tell me so I could move on and stop stressing over this, and that our other friends could not recall me ever being rude or mean to L and I was genuinely confused as to why this was all happening. He said it does not matter if our other friends think I have done nothing wrong because it's about what L feels.
He said it was primarily my behaviour, but also me being a close female friend doesn't help, and that he kept defending me and agreeing I hadn't done anything which only made L madder and all of this combined has made it blow up like this. He said he doesn't know what to tell me because he wants to continue the friendship, but L is still furious and refuses to speak to me. He said she was furious that my initial apology wasn't genuine, as I did not 'take ownership of my actions' because I asked questions about what I did wrong. In tears, I begged him to ask her to consider my feelings, as I have been considering hers, and please just either talk to me or let me know what was going on.
He reached out again yesterday and said she still refuses to speak to me, and she's not willing to forgive and forget and is not interested in being involved moving forward. He said he's not sure what to do as this puts him in an awkward situation.
I have not replied. I have our friends telling me she's overreacting and I did nothing wrong, but part of me feels like maybe it's me and I should have just, in her words, taken ownership of my actions and maybe this wouldn't have gotten so bad... I'm considering replying and apologising again but our friends say not to. Am I overreacting?

2024.05.21 13:00 CraftAccomplished784 People of size shouldn't be discouraged from self-expression at the gym

This morning at the gym, a person of size sat on some leg press equipment. The person sat there for about 15 minutes, watching videos on their phone and singing along with the gym's music. The person moved their legs perhaps 10 times during that 15 minutes.
People complain when others do that, but that's wrong.
People of size shouldn't be discouraged from self-expression at the gym.
For example, this morning the person of size who sat on the equipment, watching videos and singing, was learning (perhaps about the person's race and gender) and adding their voice to the gym. So often people of size are viewed as abnormal and deserving of shame, but this person of size embraced themselves and their body identity and sang! It was wonderful.
Nothing says that you must work out while at the gym, and letting a person of size participate in the gym, as they wanted to, was wonderful.

Hi everyone, I'm looking for opinions and share of experiences with methylphenidate hydrochloride.
After more than 2 years of wait I finally got the NHS assessment back in November, and after another 6 months got my 1st titration appointment and finally started my medication journey at the beginning of May.
I have been prescribed methylphenidate hydrochloride 5mg, twice a day.
I have been taking it for more than 2 weeks now and have a review appointment soon, so I have tried to monitor whether I noticed any difference to discuss with the prescriber, and here's where I would benefit from your input.
Since taking it, I don't think I have experienced any side effects besides appetite suppression during the day - I think after 4-5 hrs of taking the 2nd pill this goes away and my snacking urges come back. This has helped me though in sticking to 3 meals a day, eating healthy and balanced as I shopped in advance and created a schedule to promote healthy options and avoid crazy snacking (although I do tend to have an influx of focus and discipline around this time of year even before medication- so not sure if this is placebo)
(When I say healthy and balanced I mean getting my protein, fiber and overall nutrients goals, getting sugar from fruit rather than sweets, avoiding fry ups which I love, and snacking mindlessly)
I think I might be slightly more focused at times, and a bit more organised but this might be just placebo as I might have been influenced by others telling what they experience.
I definitely think my mind has got slightly more quiet.
In terms of impulsiveness I was tempted to say I was better but then I went and bought a second hand laptop yesterday - my impulsiveness manifests through shopping rather than booze and other things.
So my questions to you: 1. What things, if any, have you monitored/noticed changes in at such small dosage?
Also, I'm mindful every person / any medication is different, and you are not qualified prescribers - but I saw many people talk that they progressed from a specific dosage to another more rapidly than 3 weeks/ a month => so 2 more questions here:
  1. how was your dosage progression on methylphenidate?
  2. were there any improvements/side effects you've experienced at each phase more than other?
Many thank in advance to anyone sharing their thoughts on my questions above.

2024.05.21 13:00 ScarletMenaceOrange Kobo Libra 2 review (first e-reader)

After going totally nuts trying to decide between this and the colour version, I finally bit the bullet. I don't have other e-readers to compare to, but I did absorb huge amounts of info from Youtube videos, reviews, and comparisons.
Someone said that the BW screen is magical. I did not really believe it, but the first time I got the device, I tried to peel off the text from the device's screen, because I thought it has a sticker on it. Well, it was just text on the normal screen, it just magically looks like paper. The reason why I don't switch this to colour (even if the temptation is there) is exactly this, I don't want to give this magical paperlike screen away. It can be even read normally without any backlight, but you need some ambient lighting then, or to be at outdoors. Even then, you can get away with 4-8% backlight usage, which is very small. Biggest draw of the device for me was that it is easy for the eyes compared to LCD screens, so no way I'm ever giving that perk away. As I understand it, colour version has a dimmer screen that needs more backlight, which then makes it to be less "magically paperlike". I'm sorry, Libra colour, maybe some day when the technology has improved, or I can afford a companion device (or two 😂).
I got the Kobo plus free trial, definitely everyone should try it, as you can cancel it right after and still use the month, then continue if you feel like it. However, the plus collection is not that large, it was hard to find something that I know and enjoy from there. It was good for testing reading and manga capabilities though.
The wifi was a bit annoying, bouncing on and off. Also the normal home library view was not that good. I sorted my manga's in different folders, but the device did not seem to care about this. Also it wants you to check out the store and its over priced wares. For example, Made In Abyss one manga volume costs 10 dollars, while you can get a physical edition for of the same thing for 15 dollars. I just call it what it is, highway robbery. Luckily you can sideload the thing easily if you can get your books in other ways, so I'll be doing just that and saving a TON of money. The first day I got it, I read the whole day, and it would have costed me about 80 dollars in manga purchases alone.
So I installed Koreader, which made everything just better, if you take a bit of time to finetune it, as the default settings are not very nice. Also you need to install a dictionary, which is another ordeal to do and find one. After this, the device is just faster, it is a BIG difference while reading manga. The horribly expensive store is gone, good riddance I say! Wifi can be turned off eternally for all I care, more simplicity and no battery drain. Manga's and books can be sorted in libraries, and the device understands it! Custom screensaver is easy to get, ofc need to have that too, just for fun. Well now it starts to look like a great device, it seems that doing little bit of work really pays off. If I tried to use the device "as intended", I would have no money left, and would still be waiting for those absurdly large manga pages to turn (some which crashed the device). This is the way.
So yeah, it is a very good device. The screen autorotating feature is excellent, I find myself reading books on landscape mode, even if it is not the first instinct. Perfect use in outside sun with 0 backlight. The buttons are a must, I would not buy anything without side buttons at this point. Only wish it had a remote page turning, that would be the next step. You can mod for it, but that will be a hassle, and the current solutions are far from perfect. When people realize how comfy that would be, maybe in future the devices start to feature it. I guess it is hard to covet something that you do not know or have not experienced.
I was scared that the size is not good enough for manga, but it is. Emphasis on "good enough", it will do the job, and reading them is enjoyable, but a bigger screen would be optimal. Also when Kindle made a "manga version", it had this exact screen dimensions.
The screen, again, is immaculate in it's details. I'm enjoying too much how my wallpaper looks on it, it can be used as a tabletop photo frame, like a decoration! That will require buying a case for it, which I recommend, as when you close the case, the device goes to sleep automatically, and wakes up when you open the cover. That is very convenient, as is the ability to use the cover as a stand. I would just buy it for the screen protection alone.
