2024.05.21 14:13 -She-Beast- Our VOICE, a local nonprofit, addresses sexual harassment in the food and beverage industry.

Our VOICE, a local nonprofit, addresses sexual harassment in the food and beverage industry.
That’s just what it’s like working in a bar,’ some say.
Others might push it aside for financial reasons — ‘Don’t you want more tips?’
But local advocates say addressing sexual harassment and sexual violence is key to preventing it from continuing. Especially in the hospitality industry, where it is prevalent.
A 2018 Harvard Business Review study of 76 female college students working in food and beverage service jobs found that more than two-thirds reported experiencing sexual harassment each month of the three-month study. The most frequent behaviors described included being told suggestive sexual stories, offensive remarks and crude, sexual comments.
On a Monday afternoon in April, a small group gathered at Avenue M, a restaurant on Merrimon Avenue, to learn strategies to prevent and address sexual harassment in the service industry. The “86 It” training, held by Our VOICE, an Asheville-based nonprofit serving survivors of sexual violence and human trafficking, was organized by Asheville Food and Beverage United, a trade group for service workers.
“Harassment can include … unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors and other verbal or physical harassment of a sexual nature,” according to the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. However, “harassment does not have to be of a sexual nature and can include offensive remarks about a person’s sex.” Perpetrators and victims can be of any gender.
Our VOICE prevention educator Mercy Sosa elucidates the many forms harassment can take in the service industry: female staff encouraged to wear makeup and form-fitting clothing; LGBTQ staff pressed to conform to gender norms in grooming and dress; sexist or homophobic jokes; letting unwanted behavior from guests continue due to the mentality that “the customer is always right.”
“We all know [sexual harassment] is something that’s kind of culturally accepted,” says Miranda Escalante, manager and bar lead for Avenue M and a member of AFBU, in an interview with Xpress. “So I think it is important for workers to have the tools and feel safe to say ‘Hey, this is not OK.’”
She continues, “There are owners with reputations in our city, unfortunately, and there are places in our city that have these reputations for not being completely safe for their workers.”
Protecting each other
“86 It” is one of several community trainings offered by Our VOICE. Others include preventing drug-facilitated sexual assault, bystander intervention and preventing sexual harassment in the workplace.
Themes of the trainings overlap, and April’s “86 It” session addressed drug-facilitated sexual assault and how to intervene or interrupt potential harassment or violence. The former can look like drugging, or “roofie-ing,” a person’s beverage, pushing a person to drink more or targeting someone who is already intoxicated, Sosa explains. She notes that assault can still occur if someone has consumed substances consensually.
Our VOICE adult prevention educator Allie Stec addresses the “4 Ds” of bystander intervention: address the behavior directly, distract the parties, delegate or ask for help from someone else and document the behavior. Interrupting behavior can be as simple as telling a worker, “Hey, they need you in the back” to separate the individual from a harasser, Stec says.
TIME TO INTERVENE
Our VOICE prevention educator Allie Stec explains several bystander intervention tactics to interrupt sexual harassment occurring in the food and beverage industry. It can be as simple as one worker saying to another, “Hey, they need you in the back” to separate the worker from a harasser, Stec said. Photo by Jessica Wakeman Asheville City Council member Kim Roney, a former food and beverage worker who attended the “86 It” training in April, encourages people in positions of power to speak up when they see or hear inappropriate behavior.
Cultural setting is an important aspect of addressing sexual harassment in the service industry, Sosa tells the group. Our VOICE suggests a “strong, well-known policy that covers more than the law” and established procedures for how to respond to harassment complaints. Sosa also advises frequent discussions about the policy, as well as trainings like “86 It.”
Unwanted attention
Sexual harassment in the form of unwanted attention can come from customers or co-workers, explains Sosa. Either way, unwanted attention needs to be addressed before the perpetrator escalates the behavior to sexual violence.
Morgan Persky of Woodfin experienced a lot of unwanted attention and touching when she worked in hospitality at a restaurant for a year. She tells Xpress the harassment began after a few months on the job.
The kitchen manager “would kind of corner” the female employees and ask them for hugs, which were “tight” and “lingered,” Persky says. His “hands would be around an arm or back,” and the women agreed that his hugs felt “creepy.” They would try to pivot their bodies to “go in for a side hug,” Persky explains.
Yet this kitchen manager’s lingering hugs were only half the harassment Persky endured. He and some cooks would make comments about her body, both to her directly and talking among themselves. And she says when the kitchen manager hugged her, he would ask, “Why don’t we hang out? You never want to hang out with me!” Persky says she never acquiesced. “I’m sure I made some kind of excuse, like ‘I’m tired,’” she explains. “I didn’t want to be outright rude, because I was afraid of any consequences. I didn’t know if there would be any.”
The owner of that restaurant was regularly on-site. Persky told him how she was being harassed, and he replied, “You need to have thicker skin,” she says. Persky adds that she knew a co-worker came to the owner about sexual harassment by the kitchen manager, too. At that, Persky says, the owner “panicked.”
“He was like, ‘Don’t say sexual harassment! I don’t want to hear that!’” Persky recalls. “‘You can’t go around saying that.’” The owner’s reaction felt as if “he basically told me to shut up and deal with it,” she explains. Angry, disappointed and feeling “trapped,” she quit the job three weeks later.
“I knew it was never going to get better,” she says.
Getting physical
There’s a crucial difference between flirting and sexual harassment, Sosa tells the group convened at Avenue M. Generally speaking, flirting is consensual, and it feels good. Sexual harassment feels uncomfortable or bad, and it happens without the victim’s consent.
Heather Gressett worked in the service industry from ages 13-30, beginning in Chicago. She says sexual harassment wasn’t discussed in her workplace or in school. As a result, she didn’t recognize sexual violence when it was happening to her. “It was just so normalized that even I didn’t know it was wrong,” Gressett explains, adding that so many years in the industry and so many violent experiences may have “desensitized [me] to a lot of stuff.”
In retrospect, Gressett sees more clearly how co-workers violated her, including when she was a minor. “I was sexually assaulted by so many men,” she tells Xpress. At 16 years old, a co-worker in his 30s, who was married with kids, pushed her against a wall and kissed her, she says. And at another restaurant, a co-worker followed her into a walk-in refrigerator, turned the lights off and groped her.
Gressett says she also engaged in sexual harassment in restaurants by grabbing guys’ butts. “We would all just do it to each other — it was like a thing.” Gressett says she cringes when she thinks about her actions now, referring to them as “a trauma response” or coping mechanism. “It was almost a way to normalize my own assaults,” she explains. “If I’m doing this to other people, it’s not so big of a deal, right?”
Seven years ago, Gressett moved to Western North Carolina and worked at several restaurants and breweries here. While she says she saw some problematic behavior — such as brewery owners who would not call a transgendered worker by their correct name — sexual harassment wasn’t as extreme in the service industry here as it was in Chicago. “Maybe there’s a shift in me where I was, like, I’m not going to accept this anymore,” she muses.
Gressett also sees younger people in the service industry demanding to be treated with respect and advocating for their rights. As Escalante from AFBU puts it, young folks are no longer tacitly accepting sexual harassment as part of the job that must be endured. And people like Gressett, who experienced sexual violence in the service industry themselves, are motivated to be more responsible bosses than the ones they had.
Gressett now runs her own business, Lily Mae’s Desserts. She’s currently the only employee, but she’s dedicated to fostering dignity and respect.
“When I do have a staff, I want to set an example for how my work culture is,” she says. “It starts with me, right?”

2024.05.21 13:24 xXxCadexXx Summerslam 2024 “Realistic” Dream Card

There are 10 matches on this card but some go by quick, or could happen on tv, I’m assuming this is gonna be the biggest or one of the biggest PLE’s ever so here we go.
Randy Orton vs Solo Sikoa
This match doesn’t even start because Randy is attacked before walking out Solo is sending a message to everyone. This is a reason to have Randy on the card, you’ll see.
Jey Uso, Sami Zayn, and Kevin Owens vs New Imperium, King Gunther, Ludwig Kaiser, and Ilja Dragunov
New Imperium starts a feud with Sami and Kevin, they need a third and get Jey Uso. They dominate setting Gunther up for a world title shot.
AOP(c) vs The Creeds - WWE World Heavyweight Tag Team Championship
Big meaty men bumping meat. I do not think Awesome Truth will make it to summerslam.
Liv Morgan(c) vs Becky Lynch vs Asuka vs Kairi Sane
Liv Morgan beats Becky about a month after KOTR. Their feud officially ends here but damage control get involved to spice it up. Miss MITB Dakota Kai tries cashing in but fails to with involvement from Becky.
Chad Gable(c) w/ the creeds vs Otis/Pete Dunne intercontinental Championship
Either stretch out the Otis Gable storyline til august or wrap it up quickly and give Pete Dunne a singles title opportunity, opportunity comes short against the odds though. Alpha/Creed Academy stands tall with their titles (I’d even get Shelton Benjamin or Kurt angle or both to join them eventually)
Drew McIntyre vs CM Punk
This would be the second PLE match between the two, Drew winning the first. Punk Wins to probably seal this feud down..but Drew will still get the last laugh down the line.
Logan Paul(c) vs LA Knight United States Championship - Falls Count Anywhere
I’m not the biggest LA Knight fan but I think it’s about time they give him a title run. This feud has already been set up and it’s gonna be entertaining. Falls count anywhere to enhance their performance and maybe have Logan do something crazy because they’re in Cleveland.
Yeah!
Damien Preist(c) w/ R-Truth ;) vs Finn Balor w/ JD World Heavyweight Championship
Judgment Day implodes throughout summer and we finally get this title match. Finn Balor and JD leave the Judgment Day and become a duo. Balor Finally after 8 years becomes world champion again…
Damien Preist or Aj attacks Finn balor after the match and takes out JD. Aj Styles is cashing in his MITB!
Finn Balor(c) vs AJ Styles
AJ is champ again! Finn Balor is once again taken from a world title run.
Bayley(c) vs Bianca BelaiTiffany Stratton Woman’s Championship
Bayley wins. For now.
Cody Rhodes(c) vs The Rock w/ The Bloodline (and Roman) WWE Undisputed World Universal Heavyweight Championship
Let’s just assume the rock does this match, the way I would have it play out is there’s a moment where Cody is being beat up by either all of the bloodline or Rock and Solo, Randy Orton comes to Cody’s aid. We get a Randy vs rock moment (which sets up a match later for them) and Cody and Randy stand tall
but then Roman returns. Randy is taken out, it’s now 2v1 Rock and Roman vs Cody. But in a shocking turn of events Roman turns on the rock with a Superman punch. Everyone is shocked turning Roman face (or roles could be reversed and Rock turns face.)
Cody Capitalizes on it hits rock with a crossroads and wins. The Bloodline is all over the place.
Summerslam is closed out by a Slim Jim Commercial

2024.05.21 05:12 Interesting-Rope-652 Any Boston to LA transplants? Need help deciding if LA will be right for me

26m, So I found a job that's pretty much exactly what I want in terms of career path and field. Only problem is, it's in LA (Culver City)... which I'm both worried I can't afford and also generally worried about... I spent the last 6 years in Boston right in Fenway during school. Seen junky fights right outside my window, people drinking liquor on my stoop at 10AM etc. never had any issues myself. Should I expect about the same were I to move here? I know the media has probably overblown the situation in LA (Still don't plan to walk alone there at 1AM) but I tend to be pretty anxious in general when it comes to crime I'm not sure if living here would just put me on edge 24/7 and make me miserable as a result. As a gay person, I will note the one thing I like and am curious to see more of is the gay community in LA. I heard WeHo is the spot in terms of that. Is that area generally safe or not so much? Affordable? Any alternatives? Thanks!

2024.05.21 04:11 Hobbitsliketoparty Are carpet related business a dying breed?

Someone is hosting a three day class in my area that teaches people how to dye and redye carpets and rugs. Redye an entire room/basement, fix bleach stains and other color loss issues, as well as redye intricate Persian rugs/etc that have lost their color over time (but are still very expensive and high quality rugs).
They also teach the same for other upholstered furniture. You can apply this to auto/boat/plane interiors. He says he has a study line of clients. He says he also does well by working with insurance companies on damaged claims. He does post a lot of photos online of jobs he's taken (too many to be fake). I've spoken to three or four people who have taken his class. They all say the class is very informative and thorough, and they are taking on clients and doing business with it.
I have no prior experience with any carpet related work. He claims you don't. The other people I spoke to already work in carpet cleaning, but nothing with color.
It interests me. I love the idea of working with my hands. It's something I can do solo and maintain a low overhead. I've looked in my area and I do not see anyone offering this - which means there's a market to fill. It could also mean there is no demand for it.
I know carpet is a dying business (heh). However, people are still putting it down. Commercial buildings (hotels, churches, office buildings, etc) are still putting it down. It would be cheaper to redye and save an old rug rather than replace it, and the same could be said for carpet.
There's the auto, boat, plane approach too. There is a small marina near me, there is a small airport that plenty of small planes fly in-and-out of near by, and the auto approach could yield a small amount of clients. My main target demographic would be home owners and commercial buildings. I live along the front range of the rocky mountains - so there are some big cities near by that I could service.
The class itself is about $2,000. I would then have to buy supplies/equipment and build a cheap website and market the business. So, not a huge upfront cost.
But, I'm not sure how to gauge the market potential, and I would really appreciate help looking at this. Thanks

2024.05.21 03:33 RayCLL Lost, aimless and unsure what to do. (Long post sorry)

Hey guys,
This is going to be a long post and I appreciate not many of you if any at all are gonna read this post but that’s fine with me.
I think this rant on my the direction of where I’m headed and of my life in general is long overdue there’s probably going to be a few things that I miss out but here we go…I just feel like I need to put it all out there somewhere maybe getting a lot of my thoughts off my mind will help me feel a bit better? Not really sure where I’m going with this but let me give some background.
Academically I’ve always been a very average and in some aspects maybe below average in my opinion. I should note the perspective of myself is probably strongly influenced by the constant comparisons with other people in all aspects whilst I was growing up which has probably skewed the perspective of myself throughout life. My parents always wanted me to do well academically and was always hopeful as a kid that I would go to one of the best universities in the country (there was never any indication of this happening whilst I was young) I was always average in everything I did, a lot of the time it felt as if I had to work my butt off to even be sub average in some cases. I should note that my parents are Asian and their constant comparisons of me and wishfulness has most probably rubbed onto me in terms of my character traits. I love my parents to bits but I think this was probably a part of the problem.
Growing up everyone around me was so bright lots of my friends had huge aspirations and I had always wished that I would become something when I was older I feel like everyone knew what they wanted to do. Being at a good secondary school also meant I was surrounded by lots of smart people which I never felt like I could keep up with. I finished my gcse’s with 1 A 7B’s 3C’s and a D one of the B’s was in maths I was told not to take A level maths by my maths teacher because she essentially Told me I wouldn’t be able to handle it and I would fail. I took it anyway and through lots of pain and struggle I ended up with BBC with C being in maths and B’s in economics and business I genuinely don’t think I could’ve studied much more and revised much more for my a levels I did dedicate so much time to studying and it was my number one priority but given again given that most people I knew got far better grades than me at this stage in life I always constantly pondered is that all I’m really capable of? I just can’t help but feel disappointed looking back. I was outright told I would fail maths at one point by the same teacher that told me not to take A levels maths because I wanted to retake my AS maths exams due to being on track for a D/E overall if I didn’t do so. Most people I knew went to spectacular russel groups universities studying good degrees oxbridge, imperial, kings college London studying chemical engineering, economics all sorts.
This moves me into the next stage of my life…I got into UEA studying computer systems engineering (basically comp sci + electronic engineering) now UEA isn’t exactly known for comp really more so health and medicine really. There’s a fair bit that went on university actually but I’ll try to keep it short and to the point I guess. It essentially felt like secondary school all over again…made friends most of them were dead smart felt like I couldn’t keep up thankfully I made a good friend that helped me through some modules I struggled with. Got stuck in a placement/sandwich year as an IT placement student which I was really unhappy with came back to uni finished my degree and in the process got caught up in a 2 year unhappy(abusive maybe?) relationship that consequently during the duration resulted in a suicide attempt due to family/relationships problems. (Effectively my family didn’t like me being with her but I had convinced myself I loved her but she wasn’t exactly an amazing person and as a result a few tense situations arose this could be another post in itself) I finished uni and somehow got first class honors. Whilst I was at uni I made lots of good friends outside of uni aswell….I’m into cars you see and I miraculously established a couple friend groups with this mutual interest who I would hang out with had some of the best times with them but came the end of uni I had to leave the city because the city I studied wasn’t exactly thriving in the industry at the time I wanted to work so staying there wasn’t exactly an option.
I should note up until this point I just feel like the friend groups I had been involved with up until this point… I don’t really know how to describe it… but I guess I felt like the human punching bag most times? Maybe I was the most easy to pick on/make fun of? Most notably in sixth form and university. This through never really helped my self esteem.
I landed a job as a graduate software engineer at a big tech consulting firm in Newcastle I was really chuffed with myself at the time. The application process was long and I didn’t expect myself to get the job initially but I miraculously got it! At the time I thought to myself this is me and I’ve made it I’m in a good job at a very reputable company I’m happy and so moved all the way up north by myself. I feel like I have no friends up here still though I have thankfully found myself a wonderful girlfriend who I live with but I still feel kinda lonely far from all my friends and family I know down south. Currently 24 im 1.5 years into the job now and I’m not really enjoying the job I’m doing really for those that are in the tech industry I’m essentially in an applications support role more so than software engineering and I’ve had a look at the other projects the company is involved in I could potentially migrate to none that really seems to interest me and a lot of it is the same kind of role. I’m not really working with the tech I want I’m not doing the job I assumed I would be doing I feel like I’m slowly losing the programming skills that I accumulated during university as all I do is lots of light bug fixing work that requires very minimal technical skill. I feel like I’m not really learning anything and I’ve tried applying for other software engineering jobs but I simply don’t have the skills or experience I thought I would’ve accumulated by now (looking at junior roles) I know life isn’t all about money but I always compare myself to my friends that I feel are doing so much better than me in life in much more senior roles making more money they all seem to be much happier than me and progressing well career wise. During this time I’ve realised I’m not getting paid that well really I don’t really see my self progressing in the company very quickly anytime soon and I’ve flunked a couple final interviews with other companies that would’ve put me in a significantly better financial and career position. Now I find myself applying to so many jobs which I never get a response to and I just really kinda feel even more under qualified as time has gone by. I have started learning the tech neologise on the side by myself however I’m doubtful that this would actually actually help my job search in the long run as most positions require commercial experience in the skills. Ive started contemplating maybe looking for a career change such as consulting but I’m not sure what to look for or what I even really wanna do or qualify for? Unsure how to progress and feeling really unmotivated at this point. I always think to myself if I saw what I would turn out to be right now as a kid I would probably be pretty disappointed.
At this stage I feel like I’m wandering through life aimlessly. I kinda feel like I’m on autopilot. As a result of all of this I’ve felt depressed more so as of late due to low self esteem, low confidence and my anxiety in general is slowly getting worse. I tried going to a shopping centre the other day to get birthday gifts for my girlfriend I essentially had 500 panic attacks whilst I was there. I’ve tried various methods to make friends such as bumble friends or Facebook groups none of which seems to result in anything I just don’t really know what to do. I’m very much unsatisfied with my life and who I am and what I do. I just kinda feel shit really I just wish I was happy with myself… sorry if this post has been a mess it’s kinda unformatted and I’m sure I’ve missed a lot and still got a lot to say but I’ve just typed out what I am thinking and feeling in the moment…

2024.05.21 02:37 _Revelator_ Clarkson's Column: Fatshamed by TikTok

Social media showoffs are shaming me off my backside
By Jeremy Clarkson (The Sunday Times, May 29)
An extensive study has found that fat people are twice as likely to stay at home and not do any work as thin people. This is costing the country eleven hundred and seventy billion a year and everyone is running around wondering what on earth can be done to stamp out this slobbishness.
The Tories say the answer is to make sickness benefits harder to get, while Labour says it’s going to change the school curriculum so that kids spend less time in the classroom learning about important stuff such as pronouns and diversity, and more time in the playground doing star jumps. And it is going to ban adverts for fast food.
That won’t work, though. When I wake up in the morning with a thick head and a mouth full of what feels like wallpaper paste, I know that a Big Mac will soak up all the sick and sort me out. And if McDonald’s is banned from advertising its products, it’s not as if I’ll suddenly forget.
The main problem I have with this fat-makes-you-lazy theory is that I can think of lots of fat people with a good work ethic. Cyril Smith, for instance. He was very busy. So was Henry VIII. And so, if I’m honest, am I. Yes, I realise that I’m seen by many to be the sexiest man alive, but underneath the muddy tweed coats I am something of a porker. And I haven’t had a day off sick since the 1980s, when I was actually much thinner.
I have more evidence to back this up. When I first went to Vietnam in the early 1990s, the vast majority of the population was as thin as it was industrious. People ate tiny portions of fatless food, so the men looked as if they’d stepped out of a Lowry painting and the women, in their ao dai dresses, were the personification of style and elegance.
Then, in 1997, western food arrived — so if you go to Vietnam today, everyone is as big as they are in Barnsley. Has this slowed them down? Has it hell as like. They may be carrying a few extra pounds, but the Mekong still looks like the Port of London did in the 19th century, and the Vietnamese capacity for building factories makes the Chinese look slovenly.
So I think that the people who conducted this study have got it the wrong way round. Fatness doesn’t make someone lazy. Lazy people become fat. You may start out looking like Willem Dafoe or one of those heroin chic catwalk models, but if you sit in front of the TV all day, watching Homes Under the Hammer and washing the endless frozen pizzas and crisps down with gallons of full-fat Coca-Cola, you will quickly become a human barrage balloon. And soon you will be too enormous to work because you can’t even get out of the front door.
It’s not obesity that needs tackling, then. It’s the root cause: bone idleness. And that brings me on to another study, which suggests that if you sit around all day lazily looking at Instagram and TikTok and X, you will soon become Jabba the Hutt and you will die at the age of 19, from fatness.
There are all kinds of hare-brained theories, from (usually American) professors who want to get their names in the paper, saying that people who use their phones for five hours a day are 43 per cent more likely to develop a fatberg in their colon, and that if you spend half an hour scrolling while on the loo, you will be too vast to stand up again. Unless you have a rectal prolapse, which is another likely outcome.
This is all nonsense, because the truth of the matter is that social media is as motivating as Jordan Belfort. Honestly, I can think of nothing that is more likely to make a fatso get off its couch and go for a lumber round the local park. Nothing.
As I have already explained, I wake sometimes on a Sunday morning in a puddle of self-inflicted misery and when I tune into TikTok to take my mind off the pain, I am assaulted with a never-ending stream of videos featuring people making the most of their weekends. They’re out for a bike ride, or they’re growing asparagus and radishes.
There’s one girl in what I suspect is Milton Keynes who goes into her back garden every day and films herself skipping. I want to throttle her because I know I should be in the garden skipping too, or making a little house for the blue tits, or climbing Snowdon, or whatever the Labour Party has called it these days. These perfect strangers send me on a guilt trip. And surely they must do the same for the lazy people who are watching as well.
It’s even worse on Instagram, because here it’s my friends — hiking in the hills of southern France, or having a family picnic with bread they’ve made themselves, or chopping logs. It’s like I’m living vicariously in one of those Ski yoghurt commercials where everyone somersaulted out of bed and got on a horse. And I’m lying there unable to decide who I want to shoot more: them or me.
Even on the platform of bile and madness, X, things are no better, because here we find people energetically marching to demonstrate how feverishly they want to end oil and plastic and business, and spraying paintings and trying to smash Magna Carta. Not sure what the reasoning was for that one, but at least they were up and about, doing something with their lives.
I’m aware, of course, that social media has its faults, but causing obesity isn’t one of them. You never see fat people on there eating crisps and smoking and getting sloshed. It’s people in store rooms and warehouses and offices having a laugh, and it therefore does a better job of making work look like fun than a boring man with adenoids and Playmobil hair saying he’s going to ban Ronald McDonald from our lives.

And here's the Sun column: "Formula 4 champ Abbi Pulling proves you don’t need testosterone or neck like birthday cake to be top racing driver"
An excerpt: "For the second year on the trot, a poll of 2,000 women has revealed that the sexiest man in the UK is . . . me. I’m sexier even than Idris Elba and Cillian Murphy and King Charles. And a lot sexier than Piers Morgan who limped home in a pathetic 40th place. I think he was even beaten by Joseph Merrick. Obviously, I’m amazed by the result but only because so many people say they’re surprised."
Clarkson's columns are regularly collected as books. You can buy them from his boss or your local bookshop.

2024.05.21 02:12 Kapples14 A New Era: Rockefeller Administration, Second Term (1969-1973)

A New Era: Rockefeller Administration, Second Term (1969-1973)

Nelson Aldrich Rockefeller: 40th President of the United States of America (1965-present), 49th Governor of New York (1959-1964), 1st Under Secretary of Health, Welfare, and Education (1949-1951).
Election Results: Despite many pundits expecting the presidential election to be a close race, President Rockefeller would come to win the presidency in a historic landslide victory. Carrying one of the largest electoral victories since Charles McNary's 1932 victory. The president would also find success in flipping the Democrat-held states of Minnesota and Massachusetts. This would come due to a widespread dissatisfaction with Democratic nominee Sam Yorty's campaign and poor relations with progressive and black voters, as well as numerous Democratic politicians publicly denouncing Yorty in favor of Rockefeller. Rockefeller's victory would also make him the first Republican president to win a second since Fiorello La Guardia won his 1944 bid.
Despite being able to carry the electoral vote of several Deep Southern states like Arkansas and Louisiana, Constitution Party candidate John M. Ashbrook would severely underperform at the ballots due to a lack of ballot access in a large number of states, a lack of support from the GOP, and a lack of a strong-enough national presence.
the Republican incumbent would celebrate his victory even further after learning that the Republicans retook the House and Senate, leaving him with a GOP-controlled Congress to further his political agenda.
At the start of the 91st Congress, the Republicans would elect House Minority Leader Gerald Ford as the newest Speaker of the House, with Representatives Richard H. Poff and John Jacobs Rhodes assuming the roles of Majority Leader and Minority Leader, respectively.

Background: President Rockefeller's second term would be mired with the increasing complications of now trying to end the Vietnam War, economic struggles, the departure of numerous White House officials and advisors, balancing his pursuits of environmentalism with appeasing conservative leaders, and handling the continued protests of his administration's handling of the war.
While Rockefeller would remain a well-respected figure by most Americans, his popularity with youth and progressives would slowly begin to decline yet again without an opposing candidate to compare himself against. With his focus on ending the Vietnam War consuming much of his time, he would begin looking towards Vice President Hiram Fong in order to provide him with a key domestic leader and likely successor in the upcoming 1972 election.
While Rockefeller would celebrate major successes in environmental protections, strengthening diplomatic practices, and the landing of the Apollo 11 on the moon, he would suffer from numerous criticisms over his handling of the Vietnam War. These controversies would only worsen due to the infamous release of the Pentagon Papers, exposing a history of malpractice by numerous presidential administrations regarding the Vietnam War.

Nelson Aldrich Rockefeller: 40th President of the United States of America (1965-present), 49th Governor of New York (1959-1964), 1st Under Secretary of Health, Welfare, and Education (1949-1951).

President: Nelson Rockefeller
-----------------------------------------------------
Vice President: Hiram Fong
Chief of Staff: C.A. Robins (1967-1969) Dick Cheney
Secretary of State: John J. McCloy (1965-1968) George Schultz (1968-present)
Secretary of the Interior: William Knowland (1965-1969) Russell W. Peterson (1969-present)
Secretary of Agriculture: Allan Hoover (1968-present)
Attorney General: Elliot Richardson
Postmaster General: Robert Corbett
Secretary of the Treasury: C. Douglass Dillon (1965-1970) Paul McCracken (1971-present)
Secretary of Commerce: Mark Hatfield (1965-1970) Frederick B. Dent (1970-present)
Secretary of Labor: Whitney Young
Secretary of Defense: Robert A. Lovett (1967-1969) John L. McLucas (1970-present)
Secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare: Florence P. Dwyer (1965-1969) Caspar Weinberger
Secretary of Housing and Urban Development: Norris Poulson (1966-present)
Secretary of Transportation: William M. Allen (1966-present)
Ambassador to the League of Nations: Ralph Hauenstein (1967-present)
---------------------------------------------------

Government: The Senate would officially repeal the 1964 Gulf of Tonkin Resolution on June 24th, 1970. While Rockefeller would express dissatisfaction with the move in how it would hinder his ability to manage the war, he would recognize the importance of limiting the president's wartime powers through such diplomatic measures.
On August 12th, 1970, the president would sign the Postal Reorganization Act. After working with Congress and Postmaster General Corbett, President Rockefeller would unveil his plans to reorganize the postal system. The act would grant the Post Office financial and operational independence from the government, as well as give postal workers the power to unionize and bargain for better wages and hours.
The Emergency Employment Act of 1971, passed on July 12th of that year, would appropriate $1.2 billion towards the creation of 150,000 throughout the fiscal year. The act would also give favor towards veterans, recovering drug addicts, and unskilled youths; thus, ensuring that three major blocks heavily impacted by unemployment and poverty would be able to find work under the legislation. These jobs would come from the public service fields, providing new workers for prisons, environmental organizations, public safety groups, sanitation, and more.

Economy & Labor: With reports of rising inflation, President Rockefeller would begin formulating a complex plan to curb the rising costs through extending the surtax, budget cuts with heavier emphasis on military spending, and moderating the wage demands of labor groups.
On December 29th, 1970, President Rockefeller would sign the Occupational Health and Safety Act of 1970, creating new federal regulations that would ensure the standardization and enforcement of proper safety practices in the workplace. The move would be lauded by labor organizations as a great advancement for the safety of America's working class.
President Rockefeller would sign the Par Value Modification Act on April 3rd, 1972, officially devaluing the U.S. dollar in order to begin stabilizing the economy. The realignment would seek to make American exports more attractive to foreign markets, expand the reach of America's agricultural and industrial products across seas, and create new high-paying jobs across America's industrial and agricultural industries. It would also authorize a direct change of the worth of gold to rise from $35 an ounce to $38.

Foreign Policy: On July 25th, 1969, President Rockefeller would present what he called "The Rockefeller Doctrine" during a visit to Guam. This doctrine would articulate how the U.S. would provide economic and military assistance to nations in order to fend off Communist forces, but would not assume primary responsibility in defending Asian nations. This Guam visit would become part of a tour that the President and Vice President would make including the countries of India, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Pakistan, and the Philippines.
On May 20th, 1970, President Rockefeller and Secretary of State George Schultz would arrive in Russia to begin forging diplomatic relations with the U.S.S.R., meeting with General Secretary Leonid Brezhnev. Rockefeller would address this meeting as a necessary goal in deescalating the decades of tension between the U.S. and the Soviets, hoping that stronger diplomatic affairs would have a greater effect against communist forces than meddling in the civil affairs of other countries.

Vietnam War: With high expectations towards an end to the Vietnam War, the president would announce his goal to end U.S. involvement in the war before his term ends. This would first start with threats of advanced bombing campaigns on the North in response to any continuation of the Tet Offense, drawing further ire from anti-war activists. Things would drastically change, however, when on May 14th, 1969, President Rockefeller announced his vision for a peace plan with the U.S. and North Vietnam removing troops from South Vietnam over the next year. This would start with the U.S. removing 25,000 American troops from the active conflict.
A controversial move during the war would come when the U.S. and South Vietnam pulled a surprise bombing on Cambodian lands on March 20th, 1969, with the intent of destroying North Vietnamese strongholds. Many within the Democratic Party would condemn the move as a reckless endeavor that would have potentially escalated the war via Cambodia's involvement. President Rockefeller would retaliate against these remarks by arguing that the Cambodian government was already involved in the war by aiding North Vietnam.
In a diplomatic move, President Rockefeller would fly to the capitol of North Vietnam in September of 1969, one of several trips the president would make to the Vietnamese countries, in order to pay his respects in light of the passing of Ho Chi Minh. Despite the many attempts at creating a strong peace negotiation, President Rockefeller would make an Address to the Nation on November 3rd, 1969, solemnly declaring that North Vietnam has rejected the president's peace offerings. After another year of the militaristic stand-off, Rockefeller would make a surprise announcement in early January of 1971 that the U.S.'s involvement in the Vietnam War was reaching its end. This claim would be certified when the Senate passed a near-unanimous decision in June 22nd, 1971 to pull out all U.S. troops from Vietnam by the end of the year.

Civil Rights: President Rockefeller would seek to further support the pursuit of civil rights by creating new regulations towards the desegregation of elementary and secondary schools, as well as working to negotiate new busing policies within the South that would better aid black and Hispanic youths. It would empower the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission to take such enforcement actions against businesses, individuals, employers, and labor unions found to be violating said laws. The amendment would also require employers to make accommodations for the religious practices of employees.
In a major push for equal opportunities, the president would sign the Equal Employment Opportunity Act of 1972 on March 24th of that year. The act, serving as an amendment to the 1964 Civil Rights Act, would authorize the federal and state governments with the power and responsibility of enforcing anti-discrimination within the workforce by cracking down on employment discrimination against minority groups.

Major Accomplishments: On July 20th, 1969, the U.S. would define human history when they successfully landed two astronauts on the moon. Astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin would become the first men to stand on the moon, with each of them eventually being awarded the Medal of Freedom by Rockefeller. During a speech regarding the landing, President Rockefeller would give recognition to Presidents Kennedy and Reuther, as well as the many scientists, engineers, computers, and NASA employees who made the feat possible.
On April 22nd, 1970, President Rockefeller would join with House Speaker Ford, Democratic senator Gaylord Nelson, and Interior Secretary Russell W. Peterson, in celebrating the very first national Earth Day. This event would serve as a massive charity event dedicated to uplifting environmental organizations, as well as a massive public litter-cleaning event across New York City.
On December 31st, 1970, President Rockefeller would sign the Clean Air Bill, authorizing the development of federal and state regulations to limit emissions from both stationary and mobile sources.

Major Controversies: On May 4th, 1970, members of the National Guard would shoot and kill four student protestors at the Kent State University in Ohio, with nine more students being wounded during the conflict. This would cause more than 100,000 protestors to gather around numerous government buildings, including the White House. In response to this, the president would condemn the shooting, as well as announcing that the offending officers would be removed from active duty and that the Department of Justice would begin investigating the shooting.
The New York Times would begin publishing a series of reports known as the Pentagon Papers, starting on June 13th, 1970. These papers would detail the secret history of the Department of Defense's activities and reports during the Vietnam War, as well as revealing that the Dirksen, Humphrey, Kennedy, Reuther, and Rockefeller administrations had misled the public regarding the Vietnam War.

Map without HRE borders and names
Couple of notes before the mess below. I do not speak German, French or Italian - making this was fun ;_;. Anyway, this is my best guess at the setup of the Holy Roman Empire in 1st April of 1337. I noted some mistakes within the list with regards to the map. I hope I covered the vast majority of it, but if you spot any issues please do write. Also, that blank spot inside Germany is not a mistake, it's possesions of the Teutonic Order, not a HRE member.
P.S. Managed to beat ya Paradox before Germany map reveal on Tinto Maps! P.S.S. Lord Lambert, I know you are here somewhere. The map was painful to make, but a good kind of painful. Maps are like drugs you see, and I made all the maps...

2024.05.20 22:20 Interesting-Web-9586 Over Corepower

I truly am just here to rant and see if anyone wants to rant with me.
I started Corepower in California and I loved it. I understood it was commercialized yoga, but nonetheless the teachers were knowledgable, the place was clean, and the classes were diversified.
A few years later I started teaching at Corepower in NYC. While I was still teaching, CPY got rid of free mats and towels for teachers. I showed up one day and was told that it is no longer a benefit. I reluctantly paid $4 for their stinky mat and $2 for their towel.
I quit working at Corepower, but my sister continues to do so in California and gave me her free membership. I went to sign up for a class and suddenly there is a surcharge for NYC classes. I understand the California membership is cheaper than NYC one, but you cannot tell me it should be a $20 surcharge per class (with an active membership in another city).
This is what led me to UNLEASH because CPY needs major corporate change. I believe California and NYC have different corporations??
My opinions:
  1. NYC studios has teenage/young women clean the studios for a cheaper membership (not even that cheap). Rightfully so, because it's something they do 2 hours a week, they do not necessarily do a good job. Because of this, the studios are gross, with hairballs flying around and fungus infested mats. (in CA, they hire cleaners and hire front desk staff)
  2. Teachers are encouraged to clean studios before and after their classes as well as sign people in and engage with the community after class. I was even told to check the showers to pull hair from the drains and clean other people's mats. All while being paid $20 an hour, which is $40 per class.
  3. You are telling me $250 membership per month and they make you pay $4 for a mat and $2 for a towel? And all of the lockers are broken? I could pay not that much more for an Equinox membership.
  4. The quality of the teachers-- make money out of training them and hiring them. I mean some classes are truly, so, so bad. It isn't even their fault, they are pushed through training and thrown into it. Also, there is no incentive to making new sequences when you are not paid to do so, and are encouraged to heavily stick to a script and "flow" of the class.
  5. They also started sneakily charging if you were waitlisted for a class and did not cancel your WAITLIST within 2 hours. I was waitlisted for a class, did not get off the waitlist until an hour before, and I went to cancel and was charged with cancelling the class.
The only reason I kept going was because of my free membership- but not again. I hope corporate figures it out, because I do not see a promising future for the company and the employees and yogis deserve better. And I used to really, really enjoy the membership.

2024.05.20 19:44 Majestic-Fall-9420 What’s it take to get into the field?

20 year old guy from the south, been diving since I was 10, waters always been a passion of mine and I’m interested in commercial diving. Can any divers talk to me about the process of getting into it? I’d obviously need to learn how to weld, but what’s the process like of getting jobs/certifications, what’s the cost like? Thanks!

2024.05.20 17:23 IllIllllIIIIlIlIlIlI Commercials presenting beautiful millionaire celebrities as “common people”

This trend is so fucking lame.
Has anyone seen the new T-Mobile commercial with those dorks from Scrubs teaching actor and fucking supermodel Jason Momoa how affordable T-Mobile home internet is?
That’s Khal Drogo. That’s fucking Aquaman. Some house servant probably set up his internet for him.
And Momoa breaks into a song where he sings “I have wifi now!”
Like he was some broke ass nobody living in a studio apartment who couldn’t afford a $40 a month wifi bill.
He’s so rich and beautiful and famous why not play on that instead of presenting him as a regular joe (who’s like 6’8” and ripped)
And there’s another one, with Rashida Leah Jones from Parks and Rec. She lives in LA. She’s been cast in countless TV shows and movies and has producer credits. She’s wealthy.
Citi put her in a commercial where she plays a modern peasant woman. She says with Citi cash back you get cash back automatically, so now everything is happening automatically for her!
She walks up to an automatic door at a grocery store and it opens and she looks at the camera all shocked.
Like I get it’s supposed to be a joke but it’s not funny when you know it’s a wealthy celebrity pretending to be poor and dumb. Why not get a slightly overweight woman with dry hair to do that? It’d be so much better.

2024.05.20 17:07 big_kahuna_burger5 Mental health and work

24M, burner account. I recently moved out from parents home into my first apt w 2 roommates who I’ve known for years. I’m not far from home and work in a big Midwest city. I’m in commercial banking which is not too demanding.
Recently I’ve been battling personal issues and have been feeling pretty miserable and lonely. It’s exhausting faking happiness when I’m with friends, at work, or other social settings.
On top of this, my job is making things worse. I don’t like what I do and have been interviewing like crazy but getting rejected after every final round for what feels like 9+months. My team is understaffed, the work has more than doubled, and pay/other incentives is not motivating enough. Morale on the team is super low, it seems no one really likes what we’re doing. Bank has laid off so many people last year and this, plus more to come. So internal hiring is nearly non-existent.
Over the past month I’ve found it extremely difficult to focus and get my work done. Thankfully my manager hasn’t noticed, but I know I’m not getting as much done as I used to. I’m very overwhelmed and i know I’m letting my personal life outside of work infiltrate my job.
I workout a ton, running and lifting nearly 7 days a week. I eat very healthy. I don’t know what I’m missing. I guess I just feel like I have no meaningful connections and no purpose. I’ve saved all this money and thought it would be great, but I don’t feel any different. Same routine everyday. I can’t be getting burnt out this early in my career.
I know I’m just venting, and I try hard to put things in perspective that life can be 100x worse. Is it time I find a therapist? Im really dreading going that route again. Looking for some advice, sympathy, encouragement, anything.

2024.05.20 16:46 throwaway136392639 Im not sure what I want to do with my life

Throwaway
Preface, 20M one year out of school. Right now I’m very unsure what I want to do with my life, I’m in school to become a pilot, and it’s easily the hardest thing I’ve ever done. I’m dyslexic and sever ADHD, not that those are excuses but learning this new world is the most challenging thing I’ve ever gone through and I’m not even sure if I will make it with how it’s going down so far. All of my friends absorb information and it clicks so fast for them I wish I had their brains to file things and pull them out when I need it. I just cannot seem to learn effectively.
My parents have so much pressure on me to do big things and be successful at a young age, my anxiety and stress is the worst it’s ever been, I wake up and throw up because of stress and anx. My parents are both successful sales people they’ve made a name for themselves and I’m only expected to do more or equal to that. I’ve always been great in school and it was never an issue, it sets an example that I can do good in school and comprehend everything but that’s just not how it works. I come home and kill myself over studies every night just trying to prepare for my next day. I know school is temporary and as soon as I finish it’ll be busy work for the rest of my days and I don’t have a problem with that but I’m not entirely sure it’s what I want to do, it’s the only thing that’s semi acceptable to my parents.
If it’s not a field with money and no labor then my parents will not support it and it sucks. If I’m not doing something that has a high paying salary I feel like I’ll be the black sheep and looked down on. Even stupid little jokes can get to you it’s so annoying to hear my dad talk about his work and doing everything for everyone (breadwinner). I literally do not know what I want to do. When it comes down to it I genuinely want to commercial dive. I’ve been a diver my entire life and it’s a second home to me in the ocean, of course you can guess it’s a dangerous career and my parents do not want that for me. I don’t have an option to go off on my own and do what I want to do, I just can’t. I will not survive, i’ve been brought up with everything on a silver platter. I’m not great with money and have about $500 in savings over the last couple jobs I’ve worked, I don’t have a job now since school is absolutely full time. I don’t think going off on my own is an option.
I’m also focused on myself right now and trying to get set up for life, girlfriend is not in the picture and I don’t plan on it in the near future, I need to take care of myself and support myself before I can be at 100% to give all my efforts into another human.
Anyways, I’m venting to internet strangers. Give me advice, tell me I’m wrong, do something idk.
Edit- I’m American, from the southern region.

2024.05.20 16:31 scarsellaj The Hater's Guide To The 2023-24 Premier League Season: Final Matchday Edition

The latest and most thrilling season of English football would also be the most controversial. The amount of times we had issues with refs, VAR, red cards, and blown calls made the NFL refs seem like experts in their craft. Seriously, the best European football league can't even get a video review correct in less than 2 minutes and it drives everyone mad. We also had further proof of Rich 7 favoritism with the FFP punishments dished out. It was absolute chaos, it caused fanbases to melt down like Chernobyl, but it made for amazing shitposting. How did your team do?
Manchester City: Sigh, the Prem is not beating the farmers' league allegations after this. In some way, we all expected this. After their historic treble, everyone assumed City would take a step back. They weren't even the best team in the country and they still found a way to creep up into first place. Their fourth title in five seasons, six under Pep Guardiola. They still have a chance at a double, too. If you're still living in the "Fraudiola" camp, I suggest you touch grass. Do you know understand how fucking insane that is? Sure, you can say Abu Dhabi bankrolled him and now they may be paying for it dearly but that is serious contention for greatest manager of all time. This time he was up against the adversity, too. They went without KDB and Haaland for long periods of time. Phil Foden was rightfully voted PFA Player of the Year for his efforts in their absence. Julian Alvarez took massive strides in becoming the next great Argentine striker...when he can get into the team. Jeremy Doku showed flashes of greatness, and it might spell the end for Jack Grealish. Rodri was Rodri, Ruben Dias was Ruben Dias, you know the deal. Even academy kids made serious progress. Pep won the Champions League without Messi and with a real striker. He's now guided City to another title. Goddammit, can we please get someone to topple this monopoly?
Arsenal: You did it again...you fucking did again. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. You thought you were becoming the reincarnation of Real Madrid. You ended up becoming the red version of Poch's Spurs. Some might even say that Spurs team was better than this team. Arsenal had the title in their grasp again. Then they sat back and drew with City, lost to Villa at home, and in the end, these results cost them. You bottled it again. Bukayo Saka had his best season ever. So did Martin Odegaard. Leandro Trossard made a case for a starting spot. Gabriel Martinelli was sporadic but effective. William Saliba and Gabriel locked down the backline. David Raya won the Golden Glove. Mikkel Arteta has a case for Manager of the Year (likely going to Unai Emery), and they still bottled it. We don't need to rehash how their European campaign went. You should've known Spurs were never going to give you that benefit of the doubt. Why would your local rivals help your title charge? At least you're back in the Champions League, and you showed you could shed some of those demons next campaign, so long as you don't match up with Bayern again. The painful truth is, you went trophyless again. How much longer is the goodwill with Arteta going to last? Doing this once? Forgivable. But twice? Unconscionable.
Liverpool: This was not how Klopp's Last Dance was supposed to go. One trophy, and the League Cup at that, is all Liverpool had to show for it. They hit the worst patch of rotten form at the most inopportune time. You might think losing games twice to Manchester United in a span of a week was bad enough, but to go to Italy and lose to Atalanta? And they kept a clean sheet?? Dear god, they made Crystal Palace look like prime Barcelona at one point. You are fucking cooked, and it shows. Darwin Nunez started to break out, then reverting to forgetting how to play the sport of football entirely. Virgil Van Djik's age showed. Ibrahima Konate shows flashes but is injury- and mistake-prone. Mo Salah is mentally checked out, and it showed with him in only scoring twice in the last 10 matches of the seasons. Him and Klopp arguing on the sideline was peak Liverpool banter era. You literally on the verge of a quadruple AGAIN and you scuffed the run... This team is going to need a massive reset, and that may mean cashing in a few aging stars. New manager Arne Slot will have an absolute gargantuan job ahead of him. With FSG's financial model, it'll be interesting to see who they bring in. But what do you about Mo Salah? Clearly his age is starting show.
Aston Villa: Unai Emery was sacked by Arsenal for "underachieving." When you see the job he did with Villa with half the budget he had at Arsenal and players willing to run through walls for him, you can understand how Villa managed to stay in the Top 4 most of the season. Ollie Watkins had his best season to date. Douglas Luiz become the third-best defensive midfielder in the league, and dispatched a few penalties. Niccolo Zaniolo played a smaller role and still contributed heavily to big wins. It wasn't ever perfect, and there are plenty of wayward results to point out, but Villa has got some of their old mojo back. Get ready, boys, you're going dancing next season. You'll be in the new-look Champions League for the first time since the 1980s. Don't forget: Villa has some European pedigree to them. Sure, it was back when the competition wasn't as fierce as it is now, but respect them. Otherwise all you Madrid fans are going to be shitting themselves when you rock up to Villa Park for the league stage.
Tottenham: Tottenham's season hit some very high highs, and some deeply low lows. A 10-game unbeaten streak to start the season ended with a four losses in a row. Injuries crippled all the progress they made. Ange Postecoglou's all-out attack works, but when it doesn't, it is absolutely terrifying to watch. Hueng-min Son had a nice comeback season. Richarlison finally came good for the club. James Maddison started out well enough and then had a fall-off for the ages, as did Pedro Porro. The backline of Cristian Romero and Micky Van de Ven showed they can be great but they need real discipline in midfield to balance out the high line. But there are still many players that can't get them over the hump. Not to mention, they were derailed by injuries all campaign. Make it 16 years since the last major trophy. Fifth seems fitting for a team still going through an identity and cultural reset. Some supporters think Ange isn't the one for the job. They often forget just how big of a rebuild is needed after losing Harry Kane and other core players over the past five seasons. Those are probably also the people that don't see the positive of the Tottenham money-making machine. Why win trophies when you can host NFL games? Sigh, I just want one Cup, is that too much to ask for? At least they clinched Europa League, I guess.
Chelsea: Todd Boehly will no longer be making the calls about Chelsea's transfers. That should make the fans a little bit happier. If you're keeping score at home, he's only got 1/30 of new signings right. Jury is still out on Enzo Fernandez, Moises Caicedo, Axel Diasi, Mykhalio Mudrk, Noni Madueke, and Levi Colwill. Mauricio Pochettino was trying to build something, but it was hindered by constant setbacks. A massive pile of injuries, extreme fan pressure, and underperforming players signaled it would not be another fruitful season for the Blue Lions. You got beat by a bunch of high school students in the Carabao Cup final, and somehow that wasn't the lowest point of the season. It was the thrashing by Arsenal. Chelsea should feel lucky they snagged Cole Palmer out from under Man City. He's the real Eden Hazard regen, even though he's a bit of a penalty merchant. He dragged Chelsea from finishing outside the Top 10 again. This summer will be a major clear-out. Raheem Sterling, Reece James, Ben Chilwell, and Thiago Silva might or are already leaving. The thinner squad will allow Poch to actually build something...maybe. You're not seriously going to sell Conor Gallagher to Spurs, right?
Newcastle: Eddie Howe can feel sort of vindicated that he guided this Newcastle team to a top 10 finish. They had one of the worst injury sheets in the league this season. The delicate balance of Champions League and the English season exposed their biggest flaw: not enough depth. Sandro Tonali getting suspended for being a degenerate gambler definitely did not help. Nick Pope was out most of the year and Martin Dubravka showed why he's no longer first-choice. Sven Botman and Dan Burn spent time on the sidelines and that killed their defense. Seriously though, they were chucking out Football Manager regens to play critical minutes. That only works in video games. In reality, the club is backed up against the FFP bubble. They will need to sell to buy, and that might mean cashing in on Alexander Isak or Bruno Guiamares. Maybe they'll even cut ties with Tonali and try to recoup some of their money. The richest club in the world is playing inside the rules? I guess they don't want to be the new Man City. I honestly commend them for trying to play within the confines of the rules. Some clubs can't say they do that.
Manchester United: Jim Ratcliffe really had no idea the scope of the rebuild he inherited once he bought his stake in United. He called out the club culture and facilities in the media multiple times, but perhaps it was all reactionary. United had a shit season. And boy do I mean shit. None of their players could stay healthy. Marcus Rashford is entering Dele Alli territory with how bad his falloff has been. There was the Mason Greenwood situation, then the Antony situation, and the Brazilian managed only two league goals across the whole season. Jadon Sancho called out Ten Hag's management and was gleefully banished back to Dortmund, where he started picking up his performances. He's in a Champions League Final...lol. Casemiro and Raphael Varane showed their age. He had a solid run of form but it didn't last. Varane's already said he's done in Manchester. Rasmus Hojlund took 15 games to find his first goal of the season. Alejandro Garnacho is now the best player at the club and even he had beef with Ten Hag's coaching. Bruno Fernandes might be seeking greener pastures. They finished dead last in their Champions League group and were out of Europe by February. Take solace in making the FA Cup final, but you were losing 3-0 to Coventry City, a Championship club, and had to beat them on penalties. Old Trafford may truly be falling down, and it doesn't help with Ten Hag waffling about he is still the best man for the job. Because you know, it was his signings that set the club back so much money. Antony costing 100 million quid needs to be investigated. There's no real sign of progress under INEOS's ownership. It's still too early to judge, but it's clear they will need to make some decisions. Enjoy raiding all your rivals for executives. Apparently "We're Manchester United" still works.
West Ham: Was it a bad season for West Ham? When you deep it, you'd probably say not really. David Moyes started out kinda slow but managed to get the Hammers going in vital moments. Jarrod Bowen continued his remarkable rise even as a center-forward. The pillage of Ajax for Edson Alvarez and Mohamed Kudus was fruitful, even if Kudus's underlying numbers aren't that great. James Ward-Prowse stepped up his game after being freed from the shite coaching at Southampton. Alphonse Areola cemented himself as the true No. 1 in goal. Lucas Paqueta was the real eye candy. So much so he's looking like the heir-apparent for Kevin De Bruyne. He'll cost another small nation's GDP but he was that class. Sure, they didn't reach the Europa final like they wanted to and got knocked out by Xabi Alonso's Leverkusen, but how can you say this was a disappointing season? Disappointing enough to tell Moyes he's done after this season? You're replacing him Julen Lopetegui? I know he did fantastic work with Sevilla, and you may see yourselves as the English Sevilla, but tread lightly. Did you see what happened between Wolves and him? Or what happened in his final season in Seville?
Crystal Palace: Today's top stories: Crystal Palace finished comfortably mid-table for the 11th season in a row. In other news, grass is green. It was a strange but similar season for the Eagles. Spats between ownership over the long-term vision for the club coupled with Roy Hodgson's depressing retirement tour clouded what could've been an opportunity to pounce. With Brighton and Bournemouth shitting the bed, the time was prime to strike. But again, they were let down by inconsistent forwards. Jordan Ayew and Jean-Phillipe Mateta are still struggling to score consistently (At least Mateta is producing now). Odsanne Eduoard is made of glass bones and paper skin. Eberechi Eze, Michael Olise, and Dean Henderson were good enough to keep them afloat. Eze's got enough street cred to have City and Spurs linked to him, but we'll see what premium the Eagles charge. More credit is owed to Oliver Glasner. He was a shrewd appointment, and it showed with his tiki-taka style of play. Remember, he took Frankfrut to a Europa League final win and beat Barcelona and West Ham to do it. Next season should be a moment to capitalize on drops in quality from other mid-table rivals, but you'll probably be back here with me in 2025 with a 12th consecutive mid-table finish. At least this time it's in the Top 10.
Brighton: Brighton was my biggest disappointment for the 23-24 season. Maybe that's too harsh, but what the actual hell happened? There was a lot of squad turnover, understandably affecting the quality. But they still had Evan Ferguson, Karou Mitoma, Lewis Dunk, Danny Welback, Julio Enciso, and Simon Adringa to pick up the slack. Oh wait, almost everyone listed above was injured long-term. Roberto De Zerbi's managerial stock took a massive blow. He couldn't properly juggle the league and European football, especially as the injuries piled up and they were relying on academy kids to play key minutes. There's also rumors of him beefing with club executives about the transfer policy. The drawback of such a unique system: the falloff is inevitable. It ended up causing "irreconcilable differences," and De Zerbi promptly packed his shit and left. At least Brighton can take solace knowing they won their first European group stage and picked up sensational victories against Ajax and Marseille. Proud moments amid a rather shite season. Pick yourselves up and go again, lads. Even though De Zerbi bounced, your ownership will already have his next candidate picked out. Just pray it's not a Graham Potter return.
Bournemouth: The Cherries had another fine season where a lot started to come together. I was skeptical about them parting ways with Gary O'Neil after the job he did, but Andoni Iraola was a shrewd appointment. He actually found ways to unlock Dominic Solanke. Not even Jurgen Klopp could do that. Antoine Semenyo appeared as a servicable mid-table winger. Luis Sinisterra brought the Colombian flare to the South Coast and proved he could be the country's next great hope. Some of the English lads like Lewis Cook carved out key roles, and did just about everything right to ensure another comfortable finish. Bournemouth really were not in any danger of going down. The blueprint is there. I doubt Iraola will be able to take them into European places, but I've been proven wrong by plenty of managers before.
Fulham: Another solid finish for Fulham. Look at you, not yo-yoing even amidst Tony Khan's ridiculous pro wrestling PR drama. The Jaguars of English football showed a lot of fight and a lot of class. The signing of the season is surely Rodrigo Muniz. The Brazilian revolution between him, Andreas Pereira, and the aging Willian was glamorous. Antonee Robinson played like a man reborn and may get a move to a bigger club. USMNT fans couldn't be happier. It was tough not seeing Tim Ream playing week in and week out but he's clearly slowing down and might need replacing. But you can't get rid of Tom Cairney! It's not allowed by order of the streets. I doubt Marco Silva will read this, but he may not even have a choice in the matter. Joao Palhinha likely played his final season at Craven Cottage. Even at his age, he's good enough to get into the Bayern or Arsenal first team. Cash in and replenish, you know the drill. They'll have a lot of work to do this summer.
Wolves: Gary O'Neil is a top manager for the jobs he's done with Bournemouth and Wolves. It was not an easy season for Wolves, but compared to past campaigns, this was fantastic. O'Neill successfully unlocked Hwang Hee-Chan and Matheus Cunha. That alone is massive. Toti Gomes flourished in midfield. As did Pablo Sarabia. Pedro Neto showed flashes of brilliance...when he wasn't struck down by injury. Jose Sa returned to form and kept the team comfortably floating between between the top half and upper-mid talbe. What more can you say of Wolves? They were one of the better mid-tier teams this season, and that was after Julen Lopetegui walked out just days before the season began. You thought the Wolves were dead? Oh no, they are still on the hunt. Unfortunately, their pack is likely to find new homes with more money. I think you get the metaphor.
Everton: It was meant to be a Sean Dyche masterclass. Playing attractive football has never been his repertoire, yet that was exactly what he did with this Everton. Meanwhile, Everton fans are still steaming about the points deductions they underwent. I can understand why they feel this way, considering there are much worse violators and they're being made an example of. Yet Dyche thrives on these situations. He could only collect so many points with this Everton group but they did play well enough and have some decent talent. Jared Branthwaite is clearly an upgrade over some of their past center-backs. Consider this his window-shopping season. DCL flirted with injuries and still managed to score key goals. Beto hasn't come good yet but give it a little time. Idrissa Gana Gueye played well for his age, and Amadou Onana too had his window-shopping season. Fear not, Toffees. Even with the points deduction, you will finish comfortably bottom-half, and had it not been for the Premier League's hypocrisy, you would've been as high as 12th. This is a huge moment, because you're also moving into Bramley Moore next season. Godspeed, Everton.
Brentford: Ummm, hello? Anybody here want to win a fucking football match? Anyone want to collect three points? The good vibes at the Gtech Community Stadium are starting to falter. Brentford's feel-good story is starting to get a reality check: they lack significant quality. The plan was to continue Thomas Frank's Nordic Connection since it had produced results in the past. They got Ivan Toney back around mid-winter, but did it really change their fortunes? He wasn't anywhere close to his past self. Too much time on the couch will do that. Yoane Wissa and Bryan Mbuemo did step up in attack, but without Rico Henry and Ethan Pinnock in defense it was too easy to carve through them. Mark Flekken did his best to mitigate the damage, but it was not enough to save them from a 16th-place finish. Nathan Collins was ok business but he clearly needs more time to develop to the system. Sergio Regulion put in some decent shifts on load, but not enough to justify keeping him permanently. You passed: DON'T! GET! RELEGATED! But for the love of god, please fix this shit before 24-25. Time to reset on the squad, find another plucky veteran willing to take a pay cut for playing time.
Nottingham Forest: Speaking of points deduction, nobody feels bad for Forest. They made more signings than Chelsea and clearly did it by some fishy means. It was mostly because they couldn't get Atletico Madrid to buy Brennan Johnson, so they had to accept Tottenham's lower offer. That doesn't excuse past transgressions. Then that wild social media statement that called out the Premier League's officiating. Secretly, everyone loved it but also wondered how they had the audacity to say such a thing. The only thing they can't defend is themselves. Steve Cooper, the architect of their return to Premier League and first-season survival, was canned for Nuno Espirito Santos. It kinda worked...I guess. They're not in a relegation spot even with their punishment but they definitely look the part. Gio Reyna came here on loan and had minimal impact. Morgan Gibbs-White looks good but clearly has flaws. Chris Wood is still their only reliable striker. Matt Turner was benched for a 32-year old Mats Sels and that didn't fix any of their goalkeeper problems. They're like a frat house toilet: always leaking. They'll definitely be another clear-out this summer.
Luton Town: At some point, results start to matter. It felt like Luton realized that too late. They did put up some impressive results like a 4-4 draw to Newcastle and a 4-goal dismantling of Brighton, but they struggled mightily. It was expected, but they really did give better teams runs for their money. Ross Barkley and Andros Townsend came off the couch to help. Barkley made a case for Comeback Player of the Year. Townsend provided some experience but football skills...not so much. Elijah Adebayo and Alfie Doughty tried to get the creativity going. Carlton Morris managed to post a double-digit goal season. They had pieces but could never put it together fully. The defense...good god, the defense! It couldn't stop a beach ball from going over the goal line. You brought in Daiki Hashioka to stabilize things, and all he did was score own goals and turn the ball over. It's sad that Luton is going back to the 2nd tier. Rob Edwards's job is probably safe, but can he remake the magic of 2022-23? Might be a step too far. Honestly, I'm more sad to see Jeffrey the Labrador go. The goodest of boys makes the goodest of club mascots.
Burnley: I can only applaud Burnley's ownership for not thinking like a yo-yo club. They chose Vincent Kompany because he is the anti-Sean Dyche. Free flowing, tiki taka football, playing out from the back with inverted fullbacks. Even if all the haters wanted to see him go to bring in a relegation dogfighter like Big Sam, the executives kept their man. Truly cut from the same cloth as Pep, but without any of the Pep players. That was the real downfall of Burnley's return to the Prem. This group won 101 points in the Championship last year? They didn't even manage to get 30 this time around. Kompany played anti-survival ball, and it didn't work. Sure, they had talent with guys like Vitinho and Jacob Bruud Larsen, but after it was shite through and through. At least Kompany had the audacity to play an expansive style, but survival needed more defensive rigidity. Go win it again, Clarets.
Sheffield United: If Burnley was ass, Sheffield United was mega-ass. They played like a Championship club, so it's only natural they got clobbered like a Championship club. They brought in Ben Brereton-Diaz and his fake Chilean skillset and he was...actually kinda good. It can't be said for the rest of them. Ollie McBurnie and Cameron Archer seem like the standouts, but nobody on this team was convincing enough to warrant a move to a bigger team except maybe BBD. He'll likely sign for Everton as the replacement for DCL. The club thought bringing back Chris Wilder in place of Paul Heckingbottom was the move, and it did next to nothing. Setting a record for most goals conceded in a single season is hilarious levels of incompetent defending. Conglats, you are now the new Norwich. Wear your badge of shame in anguish and go win the bloody lot in the Championship.

2024.05.20 14:15 neurotic95 Reflections on leaving the industry

Like many of you, I had wanted to be a performer since I was a toddler. While my parents were struggling to support us, TV raised my brother and me. Stories got me through bullying, s*xual abuse, and witnessing my dad’s cancer journey. I went to school for journalism to appease my parents but wanted to major in either film or acting like some of my friends did. I always told myself I’d become an actor later.
It wasn’t until I received an award for one of my short screenplays in college that I thought I was ready. A big producer who was an alumni from my college called me and said he couldn’t put my script down as he was on his way to set. That year I also performed in a stage play. Everything felt like it was falling into place.
I worked corporate but paid for evening acting classes wherever I could. I devoured everything: voice, movement, scene study, techniques, on-camera, improv, etc. from reputable studios and conservatories in NYC. I moved to NYC! I was meeting industry people! I was invigorated! My friends back home were all rooting for me on social media.
Pounding the pavement was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. Suddenly I understood why my parents told me not to pursue this dream, why people said “if you can see yourself do anything else, do that.”
My focus shifted from acting after I lost one of my corporate jobs. An actor friend told me I should be a server, as he didn’t understand how I could work a 9-5 and call myself an actor.
I worked grueling hours in restaurants and in catering, living for the moments I got to serve celebrities. Unfortunately, I was never a great server and found that line of work wholly unsustainable for me. I eventually worked for a celebrity chef and performed decently enough to get consistent shifts. But I was too exhausted to audition and to be on top of my craft. The auditions I did turn in were rushed and uninspired. I got called in for a reading thanks to a friend who was connected with one of the directors and botched it because I didn’t memorize my lines.
A more insidious thing transpired the longer I pursued this path, though. I became consumed with the idea of “catching up” to my peers. I had to be prettier, skinnier, funnier, more talented. My instagram needed more engagement so casting directors could find me. I compared myself to an old friend who was ten years ahead of me and fell down the rabbit hole of crash dieting and trying to be an influencer just like she did because she found some commercial success. I tried modeling, partaking in risqué photoshoots and semi-pornographic music videos just to get seen. I stopped going to the improv group I was a part of, a place that gave me opportunities to perform live, instead spending my time with scumbags who would promise me opportunities that never came.
As a mixed race Asian actress, I didn’t believe there would be enough opportunities for me. So I became transfixed on “networking” and improving my appearance. That same actor friend who told me to become a server would get invited to exclusive parties with industry folks; I wanted to be one of them. He asked if I’d sleep with him, and I did — also hoping he would connect me with his friends. He didn’t.
I slept with a directoactor who courted me, again promising me screenwriting, directing, and acting opportunities. He wanted to produce one of my scripts! I thought I loved him, but really I just loved what he was offering me. And of course, nothing came of this relationship.
I was living paycheck to paycheck, barely affording rent. The more industry people I met, the more obsessed I became with maintaining a place in this world. If only I made the right partnerships, then I could make up for all the lost time I spent not being an actor. I was spinning my wheels, embroiled in drama, and my relationship with my loved ones was fracturing as I became someone they didn’t even recognize. I lived for my petty little Instagram presence, where I amassed a following and nurtured parasocial relationships. Directors and photographers I wanted to work with would follow me back. As long as they did, I believed this “method” was working. Meanwhile, I barely participated in acting school and was constantly missing class. One of my teachers became so worried about me and my mental health that she’d text me everyday.
I worked a part-time admin job that was actually a great opportunity for me to pickup some skills, yet I was completely ungrateful. I lied to my boss constantly, slacked off, and dropped the ball many times. The work ethic I was once so proud of was nonexistent. I became a glorified party girl parading as an actress. I told myself I lived for a higher purpose, for art, but in truth I lost all scruples and was looking for shortcuts to success.
Things got worse and I’ve already rambled enough. But eventually I moved back home with my parents because my dad’s cancer returned. He underwent a major surgery that resulted in him developing a rare condition, requiring around the clock care from my brother, mom and me. I don’t regret going home to care for him, but leaving the whirlwind of a life I had behind was hard to accept.
Months into caregiving, a friend I had worked with asked me if I’d like to audition as the lead for a short film she was producing. Some actors I recognized would be in it. How exciting! Well, the part was given to someone who had way more experience (and followers) than me. I felt the same intrusive thoughts creep in, “is it because she’s prettier, white, skinnier?” But I put those aside. They asked me to be a part of the ensemble instead and I was happy for that.
I flew to NYC for a week and shooting was magnificent. Getting into hair & makeup and costume was thrilling. I loved working with the other actors. And meeting an actor I had watched since I was a child left me in shock. I couldn’t help but be starstruck.
The director gave great feedback on my performance and I felt proud of myself. But then people started asking me why I left NYC, when I’d come back, what my next moves were. I found myself spiraling in my grandfather’s apartment, because I just could not keep up. I was flying back to California, but it wasn’t LA. At home I would not be near any film industries. And at home my life would not be content worthy. The paper-thin brand I cultivated on social media could not be maintained. My trip was cut short because my dad relapsed and it was back to reality.
In the months that followed, I did some real soul searching and it was one of the most painful chapters I’ve endured. As I began to pick up the pieces of my life, I realized that my relationship with acting was untenable and extremely damaging to me. I was using it as a means to escape feelings of inferiority. What started out as a genuine love and appreciation for the art warped into a vain attempt at fame and recognition, at feeling loved.
Most of my industry connections have since atrophied and I deactivated my Instagram over six months ago as it became too painful to see everyone move on to accomplish things I never could. One friend from NYC, a model and writer, encourages me to keep trying but I don’t believe professional acting is for this lifetime. I’m almost 30 and quite frankly I’m prioritizing my family and my stability. I never expected my wants to change, but they did. But who knows, maybe someday…
I say all this, at the expense of incurring internet scrutiny and judgment, as a cautionary tale. I believe most of you are serious about acting and understand the sacrifices required. But for those of you who suffer from any sort of dysmorphia or unhealed trauma, be sure you have strong support networks in place while you pursue this endeavor. It’s a highly volatile career path and you truly have to be addicted to the process in order to succeed. Upon further reflection, I realized I was not one of those people.
If any of you have left the industry, I’d love to hear from you. It’s been hard reconciling the last 6+ years and a broken dream. But I will always love acting and movies. I read the posts in this thread and am rooting for all of you.
