2024.05.22 02:36 PunkLivesInMe Barely a month in and VP is already calling me a "question hire"

Admittedly I probably haven't been progressing as quickly as they might have been hoping me to since there's a laundry list of projects they need me to helm and up until now they've been short staffed, but considering this is my first actual sysadmin role I was hoping they'd give me some degree of slack.
My manager and I were work shopping ideas on expanding the C drive for one of our servers, and due to how the RAID was configured the solutions we came up with to avoid risking data loss were 1) download and license a third party partition manager or 2) format and move the entire data drive to a new partition, then format the old partition and hope it didn't mess up sharing and security permissions too much.
Manager then asked me to take a screenshot of the prices to license the full version of the partition manager and send it to him so he could forward it to our VP. I accidently sent the screenshot directly to our VP in Teams instead of my manager, and he immediately replies with "this sysadmin was a questionable hire".
Instantly gutted. There's no doubt in my mind either that he meant to send that to my manager and not me. For a few minutes I did nothing but just stare at what he sent while the memories of every moment I ever felt inadequate at my job or imposter syndrome came rushing back like a tidal wave. My manager noticed something was up with me but he likely assumed I was just eager to wrap soon up and get home.
Ultimately we wound up licensing the full version of the partition manager and the server issue was resolved in less than a half hour. But for the last several hours I've been fixated on his message, and frankly I'm at a loss. I don't even wanna go in tomorrow because I can't stomach the idea of sharing office space with someone who's not afraid to admit he thinks I suck at my job and regrets taking a chance in hiring me. I wish I could go back in time a month and chosen to stay with my old job.
Should have taken up goat farming instead.

2024.05.22 00:56 eatyourgreens24 High fat makes symptoms flair?

There’s a lot that keto helps me with as far as inflammation goes, I have leaky gut and the most stubborn Candida infection ever. It’s definitely behind stubborn biofilms. But one thing I notice when adding fat, especially coconut oil is that my itchiness in my bum increases 10x. I’ve experienced legitimate die off before and this isn’t it, it lines up with my symptoms when I’m feeding the infection. Can candida thrive in a high fat environment? Anyone have any input on this?

2024.05.21 23:04 Ok_Hour8354 Things I Did on My Health Journey from BV & Yeast Infections

I’ve taken multiple antibiotics and Fluconazole/Diflucan but my symptoms would come back in just a matter of a few days. When I first sought out treatment, I was unaware of how important it is to take probiotics and didn't know that we need Lactobacillus bacteria in the vagina. However, once I learned the importance of probiotics, I started out with the Nature's Bounty probiotic tablets that have 100 million CFU. They helped my gut health a bit but weren’t enough to combat the infections, also they only have one strain and for vaginal health we need multiple strains to obtain optimal health.
-Probiotics I recommend are: Renew Life Womens Probiotics, Double Wood Vaginal Probiotics (oral supplement and contains L. Crispatus).
Next helpful thing was the Candida diet which tells you to refrain from all forms of sugar including fruits and carbohydrates. Carbs were something I didn’t expect to be a contributor with an active yeast infection but they convert into sugar during digestion. Candida feeds on sugar. I cut out white bread completely and minimized consuming flour-based foods and started to consume antifungal foods like garlic, onion, cinnamon, and coconut oil to name a few on a daily basis.
Lastly, I looked into treatments to combat the infections directly. Intravaginal prescribed medications were effective when I used them, but the infections came back a few days after use. Then I learned that I shouldn’t use medications that much because I can develop an antibiotic resistance which isn’t good. I then looked into alternative treatments and saw that many women found boric acid to be very effective. I have found boric acid to be effective and gives me a “fully cleaned out” feeling due to its antiseptic capabilities.
-Boric Acid suppositories I recommend: NewLife Naturals 60 Capsules, Double Wood Boric Acid 60 Capsules, My Frenemy Flora 40 Capsules (Also contains PROBIOTICS).
Lastly, I used a supplement called Monolaurin which is a coconut derived antimicrobial and helps reduce pathogens in the body. It also combats Candida due to its antifungal properties.
For anyone dealing with a stubborn infection or recurring infections please note that you should work on a treatment plan to follow for at least 3 months. You don’t have to do so, but you want to make sure that you have successfully treated the issue and helped your body get back on track. I hope some of the things I mentioned help you guys the way they’ve helped me.

2024.05.21 22:04 SheepCreek Question about meds for SIFO

Hello everyone!
TLDR: should I take Nystatin and biofilm disruptor togethe at the same time?
I have multiple GI conditions (including imo, ibs-c , sibo, leaky gut, slow motility, hypochlorydia).
My current focus is on persistant SIFO. My functional Dr prescribed Nystatin (compounded caps 1,000,000 3 x day). My Sibo Dr is in agreement with this dose. Nystatin started at 500,000 and has been a game changer, but it was not enough. Have been on this med for 6 months.
Of course already doing the Candida diet etc etc
Getting better, but not quite there, something is missing.
I would like to add one or more biofilm disruptors.
Do you have a recommendation? I am looking at NAC? Cant tolerate herbs
For best result, should I take those biofilm disruptors at the same time as Nystatin, and is taking them at bedtime the best? (During longest fast time).
I also take Prucalopride/Motegrity (for Constipation) at bedtime, would that cause an issue? Taking Linzess for constipation first thing in the morning.
Thank you for 📚

2024.05.21 21:16 noelslawn Possible SCT Causes

There’s a lot of smart people on this sub that have the ability to put into words what I could not for most of my life. I’m fascinated reading the SCT symptoms that are in alignment with my own. Finding a cause (well.. cure actually) is what we’re all here for, and many great theories have been suggested. Based on my reading here I wanted to piece together what I’ve learned from others about what may be causing SCT.
Causes that I’ve seen mentioned here include:
Commonalities with other issues/disorders:
If I missed anything major please let me know as I try to understand this thing and hope to make strides forward.

2024.05.21 16:07 Suspicious-Place1836 White tongue and GI issues

Hi,
I am 31 y.o. and have had all sorts of G.I., skin and sleep issues for as long as I can remember. I take high quality probiotics daily (been a few years now). A couple months ago I started developing a thick white coating on my tongue, occasionally yellow or brown. This coincided with my gut, stomach, sleep and skin issue intensifying - I am better now but still the permanent white tongue and occasional dermatitis occur.
One thing to say is that it’s worse in the morning (waking up with super dry mouth and a horrible bitter taste in my mouth with dense saliva). I have tried to use a tongue scraper daily but doesn’t get rid of the coating at all, it stays on my tongue permanently. Been tested for candida (not found via swab), have tried all sorts of rinses and oil pulling, probiotics, scraping, nothing works. So I’m thinking the cause might be rooted somewhere else and It’s not a local issue.
Photos here (NSFW): https://imgur.com/a/gZuzUgH
Any pointers would be a HUGE help, thank you!! Been loosing my mind recently with this…

2024.05.21 15:13 Ok_Hour8354 For Those Dealing with Stubborn BV/Yeast Infections. Here’s What Helped Me Get Better

2024.05.21 14:42 Shadow_Dancer87 someone's vss theory on vss facebook group.. give a read..want to know what you think ratzor24

I spend a lot of time researching how our nervous system works and what may contribute to the development of Visual Snow and other symptoms. Remember that there is a lot of vital information that I do not know, and may greatly benefit our understanding of this condition. Visual snow is described as an "epileptic" firing in the visual system in the brain. (Tinnitus behaves very similarly but it is occurring in the auditory nerves) NMDA glutamate receptors, which are overexpressed after excitotoxic injury may well be the trigger of an increased spontaneous firing in the nerves. In turn, the brain would decode this increased firing as "visual snow" The idea is that remaining nerve endings have been damaged enough to overexpress NMDA Glutamate receptors, thus increasing their spontaneous firing. There are various factors that contribute to the development of this condition. Everybody first had an initial trigger, and this varies from person to person. Common causes include stress, trauma, recreational and prescription drugs, Lyme, mold, heavy metals, and other toxic exposures. But what they all result in is brain injury and neuronal damage. The severity varies from person to person. The consequences of such injury doesn't just cause break in communication between healthy neurons, but a cascade of events that can lead to further neuronal degeneration and cell death. That is where visual snow comes in. Think of a broken radio or a TV where it isn't able to receive and process incoming signals so the outcome is a lot of visual/auditory noise. Our brains behave in a similar manner when there is an interference with proper neuron function and communication.Another good example is a type of neuropathic pain called paresthesia where you experience tingling and pricking sensations in various parts of your body. When nerves are damaged, they can't communicate properly and that miscommunication causes symptoms such as pain, tingling or numbness.Medical researchers searching for new medications for visual snow often look to the connection between the nerve cells in the brain and the various agents that act as neurotransmitters, such as the central nervous system's primary excitatory neurotransmitter glutamate. Visual snow can be caused when damaged brain cells emit an excess of glutamate. Many treatments use ingredients that work as glutamate antagonists, or inhibitors. Communication between nerve cells in the brain is accomplished through the use of neurotransmitters. There are many compounds that act as neurotransmitters including acetylcholine, serotonin, GABA, glutamate, aspartate, epinephrine, norpinephrine and dopamine. These chemicals attach to nerve cells at specific receptors that allow for only one type of neurotransmitter to attach. Some of the neurotransmitters are excitatory; leading to increased electrical transmission between nerve cells. Others are inhibitory and reduce electrical activity. The most common excitatory neurotransmitters are glutamate and aspartate while the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter is GABA. It is necessary for excitatory and inhibitory neurotransmitters to be in balance for proper brain function to occur.Communication over synapses between neurons are controlled by glutamate. When brain cells are damaged, excessive glutamate is released. Glutamate is well known to have neurotoxic properties when excessively released or incompletely recycled. This is known as excitotoxicity and leads to neuronal death.Excess glutamate opens the sodium channel in the neuron and causes it to fire. Sodium continues to flow into the neuron causing it to continue firing. This continuous firing of the neuron results in a rapid buildup of free radicals and inflammatory compounds. These compounds attack the mitochondria, the energy producing elements in the core of the neuron cell. The mitochondria become depleted and the neuron withers and dies.Excitotoxicity has been involved in a number of acute and/or degenerative forms of neuropathology such as epilepsy, autism, ALS, Parkinson’s, schizophrenia, migraines, restless leg syndrome, tourettes, pandas, fibromyalgia, multiple sclerosis, Huntington's, seizures, insomnia, hyperactivity, OCD, bipolar disorder and anxiety disorders.(Doctors use two basic ways to correct this imbalance. The first is to activate GABA receptors that will inhibit the continuous firing caused by glutamate. The second way to correct the imbalance is use antogonists to glutamate and its receptor N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA). These are termed glutamate or NMDA antagonists. By binding with these receptors, the antagonist medication reduces glutamate-induced continuous firing of the neuron. This explains why some drugs like clonazepam and lamictal are able to help relieve symptoms in some patients. They help reduce excitatory action in the brain temporarily)Anxiety, depression, brain fog, depersonalization, visual disturbances (including visual snow, palinopsia, blue field entoptic phenomenon, photophobia, photopsia) headaches, tinnitus, are all common symptoms associated with increased excitatory activity in the brain. Excessive glutamate is the primary villain in visual snow.I strongly believe there are some genetic components that play a huge role in the development of Visual Snow and makes some individuals more susceptible to developing it. Normally, glutamate concentration is tightly controlled in the brain by various mechanisms at the synapse. There are at least 30 proteins that are membrane-bound receptor or transporter proteins at, or near, the glutamate synapse that control or modulate neuronal excitability. But in Visual Snow sufferers, my hypothesis is that we carry a faulty gene that results in dysregulation of the proteins that control and regulate glutamate excitability. They are unknown as more research will be needed. We live in a society where we are stressed emotionally, financially, physically and exposed to a range of toxins in our environment. Combining underlying genetic susceptibility with these other factors creates all the ingredients for a perfect storm.Stress + Infectious Agents (if any) + Toxins + Genetic Susceptibility = Health ConditionIncluded below is a list of things that can lead to excitotoxicity. The list includes trauma, drugs, environmental, chemicals and miscellaneous causes of brain cell damage. (Keep in mind everybody's bodies behave and react differently to various substances)-Severe Stress (Most people that are stressed out don’t realize that once the fight-or-flight response gets activated it can release things like cortisol and epinephrine into the body. Although these boost alertness, in major concentrations, the elevated levels of cortisol over an extended period of time can damage brain functioning and kill brain cells)-Free Radicals – Free radicals are highly-reactive forms of oxygen that can kill brain cells and cause brain damage. If the free radicals in your brain run rampant, your neurons will be damaged at a quicker rate than they can be repaired. This leads to brain cell death as well as cognitive decline if not corrected. (Common causes are unhealthy diet, lifestyle and toxic exposure)-Head Trauma (like concussion or contusion) MRI can detect damaged brain tissue BUT not damaged neurons. -Dehydration (severe)-Cerebal Hypoxia-Lyme disease-Narcolepsy-Sleep Apnea-Stroke-Drugs (recreational or prescription) -Amphetamine abuse-Methamphetamines-Antipsychotics-Benzodiazepine abuse-Cocaine-Esctasy -LSD-Cannabis-Tobacco-Inhalants-Nitrous Oxide-PCP-Steroids-Air Pollution-Carbon Monoxide-Heavy Metal Exposure (such as lead, copper and mercury)-Mold Exposure-Welding fumes-Formaldehyde-Solvents-Pesticides-Anesthesia-Aspartame-MSG (Monosodium Glutamate is found in most processed foods and is hidden under many various names)-Solvents-Chemotherapy-Radiation-Other toxic exposuresInside the Glutamate StormBy: Vivian Teichberg, and Luba Vikhanski"The amino acid glutamate is the major signaling chemical in nature. All invertebrates (worms, insects, and the like) use glutamate for conveying messages from nerve to muscle. In mammals, glutamate is mainly present in the central nervous system, brain, and spinal cord, where it plays the role of a neuronal messenger, or neurotransmitter. In fact, almost all brain cells use glutamate to exchange messages. Moreover, glutamate can serve as a source of energy for the brain cells when their regular energy supplier, glucose, is lacking. However, when its levels rise too high in the spaces between cells—known as extracellular spaces—glutamate turns its coat to become a toxin that kills neurons. As befits a potentially hazardous substance, glutamate is kept safely sealed within the brain cells. A healthy neuron releases glutamate only when it needs to convey a message, then immediately sucks the messenger back inside. Glutamate concentration inside the cells is 10,000 times greater than outside them. If we follow the dam analogy, that would be equivalent to holding 10,000 cubic feet of glutamate behind the dam and letting only a trickle of one cubic foot flow freely outside. A clever pumping mechanism makes sure this trickle never gets out of hand: When a neuron senses the presence of too much glutamate in the vicinity—the extracellular space—it switches on special pumps on its membrane and siphons the maverick glutamate back in.This protective pumping process works beautifully as long as glutamate levels stay within the normal range. But the levels can rise sharply if a damaged cell spills out its glutamate. In such a case, the pumps on the cellular membranes can no longer cope with the situation, and glutamate reveals its destructive powers. It doesn’t kill the neuron directly. Rather, it overly excites the cell, causing it to open its pores excessively and let in large quantities of substances that are normally allowed to enter only in limited amounts. One of these substances is sodium, which leads to cell swelling because its entry is accompanied by an inrush of water, needed to dilute the surplus sodium. The swelling squeezes the neighboring blood vessels, preventing normal blood flow and interrupting the supply of oxygen and glucose, which ultimately leads to cell death. Cell swelling, however, is reversible; the cells will shrink back once glutamate is removed from brain fluids. More dangerous than sodium is calcium, which is harmless under normal conditions but not when it rushes inside through excessively opened pores. An overload of calcium destroys the neuron’s vital structures and eventually kills it.Regardless of what killed it, the dead cell spills out its glutamate, all the vast quantities of it that were supposed to be held back by the dam. The spill overly excites more cells, and these die in turn, spilling yet more glutamate. The destructive process repeats itself over and over, engulfing brain areas until the protective pumping mechanism finally manages to stop the spread of glutamate."Recent research has confirmed that hypermetabolism has been primarily found in the right lingual gyrus and left cerebellar anterior lobe of the brain in individuals suffering from visual snow. The definition of hypermetabolism is described as "the physiological state of increased rate of metabolic activity and is characterized by an abnormal increase in metabolic rate." Hypermetabolism typically occurs after significant injury to the body. It serves as one of the body's strongest defence against illness and injury. This means that the brain is trying to compensate for the injured areas in the brain by increasing metabolism to meet it's high energy demands. It is trying to function to the best of it's ability under the circumstances. Normally the body can heal itself and regenerate under the right circumstances. But it is extremely difficult for the central nervous system - which includes the spinal cord and brain to be able to do so, due to it's inhibitory environment which prevents new neurons from forming. That is where stem cells come in. Stem cells are an exciting new discovery, because they can become literally any cell in the body including neurons. This is an amazing scientific breakthrough and has the potential to treat a whole host of conditions. Scientists are currently doing research and conducting trials.Excitotoxicity can trigger your "fight or flight" response, as this is the body's primary response to illness, injury or infection. If the brain and the body remain in the sympathetic fight or flight state for too long and too often, it is degenerative; it breaks us down. If this cycle continues, then eventually the system burns out. It is this cycle that results in autonomic nervous system dysfunction. The results are disastrous, digestion is shut down, metabolism, immune function and the detoxification system is impaired, blood pressure and heart rate are increased, circulation is impaired, sleep is disrupted, memory and cognitive function may be impaired, neurotransmitters are drained, our sense of smell, taste and sound are amplified, high levels of norepinephrine are released in the brain and the adrenal glands release a variety of hormones like adrenaline and cortisol.I believe in order to find a treatment or cure for VS and it's accompanying symptoms, we need to address the underlying cause, reduce the excess excitatory activity in the brain, repair the damaged neurons, regain proper communication between neurons, rebalance the autonomic nervous system and prevent further cellular damage. We also need to figure out what genes, if any come into play. There is still a lot we don't know about the brain because it is such an remarkably complex organ.FAQsWon't lowering the levels of glutamate solve the problem? Well, not necessarily. That is just one piece of the puzzle. You have to remember that Visual Snow is a multifactorial and complex condition in which it stems from a number of different causes and influences. Based on my knowledge and the information I have gathered, I can conclude that the overstimulation of glutamate plays a huge role in VS and some other symptoms we experience. But there is still so much we don't know. That's why more research will be needed. Why is my condition worsening over time? That is a very good question. It is because the physiology, biology and chemistry of your brain and nervous system has been altered and has become dysfunctional since the initial trigger set off a domino of effects that leads to further degradation in the body. This puts a huge strain on your body and is constantly activating your stress response system. This will wreak havoc on your entire body. The stress response system was designed to deal with brief emergencies that threaten survival. It isn't supposed to last very long because the body cannot sustain itself for very long in this state. When you remain in "fight or flight" sympathetic state for too long, it becomes degenerative and breaks our bodies down. This affects every system in the body. When you are constantly under stress, the stress response system never turns off resulting in an ongoing destructive cycle. Stress can also exacerbate all your symptoms and makes you susceptible to developing other chronic health conditions. How is the gut related to VS?Having increased intestinal permeability is very common in this modern world because we are constantly being bombarded by toxins and stress. Our bodies weren't designed to handle such a huge burden. So we end up getting sick and become susceptible to kinds of diseases. Common causes include:-Poor diet (from excessive consumption of foods such as grains, legumes, sugars, alcohol)-Chronic stress-Toxin overload-Gut dysbiosis (It means you have a lack of beneficial bacteria in your gastrointestinal (GI) tract. They are overpowered and outnumbered by pathogens such as pathogenic bacteria, yeast, viruses, parasites)-Overuse of antibiotics When you have increased intestinal permeability, the epithelium on the villi of the small intestine becomes inflamed and irritated, which allows metabolic, microbial and environmental toxins and undigested food particles to flood into the blood stream. This event compromises the liver, the lymphatic system, and the immune response including the endocrine system. It is often the primary cause of the following common conditions: asthma, food allergies, chronic sinusitis, eczema, urticaria, migraine, irritable bowel, fungal disorders, fibromyalgia, and inflammatory joint disorders including rheumatoid arthritis are just a few of the diseases that can originate from having poor gut health. This sets the stage for chronic systemic inflammation, oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, impaired detoxification, gastrointestinal dysfunction and immune system dysregulation. Some toxins have the ability to damage and destroy neurons, myelin sheaths, synapses and even DNA. An overload of toxins that the immune system is not able to get rid of disrupts normal brain function. This eventually initiates an autoimmune response where the immune system attacks the brain and nerve cells as it tries it’s best to eliminate the toxins. The mitochondria are the energy producing section of your cells. When they are damaged by the toxic overload in the brain cells and are not able to produce energy to fuel the cell, the cell dies.In order to stop this vicious cycle, the underlying biological mechanisms of VS needs to be understood. That is the first step that needs to be taken. Any other stressors also needs to be addressed in order to reduce the overall stress load.It is important to know that VS is just a symptom of underlying physiological stress in the brain. Symptoms are your body's way of communicating with you, letting you know something is wrong in the body.I've come across some research indicating that microglial activation and elevated nitric oxide is involved in some neurological conditions. Basically the microglial cells are our brain's immune cells and when something triggers an inflammatory response, they activate and release harmful neurotoxic compounds (such as nitric oxide and pro-inflammatory cytokines) which results in neuronal injury/death. Microglial activation can also result in a loss of synaptic connections in different regions of the brain. It's basically an autoimmune response in the brain. The neuroinflammatory process appears to be an ongoing and chronic cycle of central nervous system dysfunction. This can deplete glutathione levels in the body. Glutathione is the body’s most important antioxidant which is capable of preventing oxidative damage caused by reactive oxygen species such as free radicals, peroxides, lipid peroxides, and heavy metals. This only further exaggerates the problem, which only leads to a cascade of increased inflammation.Nitric oxide plays a vital role in this process. Elevated nitric oxide levels reduces and impair natural killer cells which leads to a vulnerable immune system that is susceptible to a variety of systemic infections. -Phobe Zhang

2024.05.20 23:44 NottaFae Heart palpitations are ruining my life

I’m just so tired!! I’ve been told the usual “your heart is healthy” and “it’s just anxiety” from doctors. I’m a healthy weight, I’ve had multiple EKGs, a holter monitor, blood tests, and an ECHO that all came up normal. I have my own blood pressure cuff and have an Apple Watch that can take EKGs that help my anxiety during episodes, where I can tell that my blood pressure is on the low side and I can see skipped beats in my EKGs.
I live a pretty sedentary lifestyle because I’m a comic artist and have little to no time for exercise because of my deadlines. I am on anxiety medication which does help, but I think my palpitations come from a combo of not enough exercise, stress, and GI issues. I’ve been told I have irritable bowel syndrome and chronic gastritis, and it’s had a huge effect on what I can and can’t eat. It feels like I’m not getting proper nutrition, and trying to do so is a game of whether or not this food that was fine yesterday will make my gut and palpitations act up today.
I try and get exercise, but it seems to make my palpitations worse, even after just short walks. I find it difficult to stand in one spot for longer than 5 minutes (like in a line or showering) or I’ll get hot, dizzy, and a high heart rate. Hanging out with friends is difficult, and I can’t do much of anything anymore. The only advice I’ve gotten from my cardiologist is to eat more salt, which I eat plenty of. I’m on Prilosec for the gastritis, but it keeps coming back, and I know being on it for long term isn’t great for my health.
I’m just having a tough ole time here.

2024.05.20 18:20 Material-Run82 Constantly lightheaded and dizzy?

On April 15th, while donating blood I passed out. It was only my second time but I noticed a few minutes in that my arm hurt a lot worse than the last time. At that point, I knew I was going to pass out. Since that time I've had frequent bouts of being light headed and dizzy. At one time I started to pass out while standing at my kitchen counter. Standing from squatting, sitting or lying also cause issues. My doctor said to give it a month and to monitor it while my blood built back up. Hemoglobin test came back optimal. I've also been trying to increase the iron in my diet via meats and spinach.
On May 9th, it was suspected that I have gastroenteritis (stomach flu) which might be worse due to my gut issues(diverticulitis, ibs, functional abdominal pain syndrome). During this time I am constantly light headed, almost out of body. At times my vision trails, I get dizzy sitting, standing too long or moving too much. My doctor chalks it up to the viral illness and is prescribing meclizine as he doesn't believe it's bacterial. He said to give it a week and monitor any fever. I mentioned my ears felt fuller the past 2 days. He didn't see any ear infection or puss. He said my ear canals are narrow (the first time anyone has mentioned this) and he couldn't see fully.
My question is, how likely are the 2 unrelated? I just happen to have some unknown cause possibly due to my blood supply AND then have more caused by a viral illness.

2024.05.20 17:20 Material-Run82 Labeled Functional Abdominal Pain Syndrome

Has anyone else had a similiar experience or does anyone have any thoughts?
At the beginning of Feb 2022 I was diagnosed with diverticulitis with a micro perforation. I was given 72 hours of IV antibiotics and 10 days of an oral antibiotic. Since then I've had a constant pain in my lower left side. There are times where I am in and out of the bathroom all morning. Or having a sudden rush in the middle of the day. It seems like every 6 months it would flare up. Colonoscopy showed the diverticulosis and any CT scans have not shown an active flare up. At first my GI suspected IBS caused by diverticulitis by said all that meant to him was that if I saw him for 5 years with the same issues he'd just note it in my file. He kept it labeled as that until June of 2023. At that point he believed I was having back pain radiating to my front side. As a trial he prescribed Bentyl which he said wouldn't touch any back pain. The Bentyl helped my abdominal pain but I had severe side effects. Since my GI wasn't returning my calls on how to proceed, my primary prescribed Hyoscyamine. This helped but wasn't as effective as Bentyl. I had a period of success by changing my diet (cutting out food sensitivities) but Covid and sleep issues undid everything. I've realized since foods and stress are triggers. I'm currently treating sleep apnea which I believe is causing physical stress.
I got a second opinion from a GI at a University Hospital. He reviewed my colonoscopy and determined I did not have IBD. He also pointed to no other documented diverticulitis attack by CT scan or fever. He labeled it as Functional Abdominal Pain Syndrome. He said what I normally do would be his recommendations (Heat, rest, fluids). He said it's not a food issue but my diverticula could be irritated. He suggested to my primary looking at antidepressants as it could be a gut/brain signal issue.

2024.05.20 16:25 Herbal_Mind Navigating the Risks: Fecal Microbiota Transplant and Organ Transplantation in the Treatment of Irritable Bowel Syndrome

The booming underground market for fecal microbiota transfers (FMTs) has raised significant concerns among medical professionals and regulatory bodies alike. The practice, which involves transplanting stool from a healthy donor into the gastrointestinal tract of a recipient, aims to restore the gut’s microbial balance. FMTs have shown promise in treating certain conditions, such as Clostridioides difficile (C. diff) infections, which can cause severe diarrhea and more serious intestinal conditions. However, the unregulated and unsanctioned expansion of this practice into a wide array of other health issues, facilitated by an underground market, poses unprecedented risks and challenges.
The allure of FMTs for individuals suffering from a variety of gastrointestinal ailments and other conditions has led to a dangerous proliferation of do-it-yourself approaches and an underground market that operates outside the scrutiny of medical standards and regulatory oversight. Websites like HumanMicrobes have emerged, connecting buyers with sellers of human feces, purportedly screening donors with self-devised questionnaires and offering fecal material for self-administration. This black-market operation, spearheaded by individuals without medical credentials or oversight, represents a significant deviation from the controlled, clinical settings where FMTs are researched and administered for specific, approved uses.
The risks associated with unsanctioned FMTs are many. Firstly, the absence of rigorous donor screening and stool processing protocols, as observed in regulated environments, significantly increases the risk of transmitting infectious diseases and other pathogens. The tragic outcomes reported in clinical settings, including deaths due to improperly screened stool, underscore the critical importance of stringent safety measures.
Secondly, the long-term effects and efficacy of FMTs for conditions other than C. diff are still under investigation. Early research into the potential of FMTs to treat conditions like irritable bowel syndrome, Crohn’s disease, and even autism and depression is promising but inconclusive. Without robust data supporting these applications, individuals resorting to underground FMTs are essentially participating in uncontrolled experiments with unpredictable outcomes.
The regulatory challenges posed by the underground FMT market are considerable. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has begun to take action against operators like HumanMicrobes, citing violations of regulations that ensure the safety and efficacy of medical treatments.
However, the transnational nature of the internet and the desperation of many patients for relief make regulation difficult to enforce. The evolving landscape of microbiome research suggests that FMTs may one day play a significant role in treating a broad spectrum of conditions. However, the current lack of understanding about the long-term impacts of altering the gut microbiota, combined with the potential for unforeseen adverse effects, calls for a cautious and regulated approach to FMT research and application.
Herbal Formula:
Given the context of enhancing gastrointestinal health and potentially supporting the microbiome, a carefully selected herbal formula that maximizes synergy and efficacy, while minimizing the risk of adverse effects, is crucial. Drawing from a deep understanding of phytochemistry and a vast database of herbs, I recommend a blend that focuses on soothing the gut, supporting healthy digestion, and nurturing the gut microbiome. The following formula represents a balanced approach, incorporating herbs known for their digestive support, anti-inflammatory properties, and prebiotic content:
  1. **Slippery Elm (Ulmus rubra)** - Slippery elm is renowned for its mucilage content, which coats and soothes the mucous membranes lining the digestive tract. This can provide relief from irritation and inflammation, making it an excellent choice for supporting a healthy gut environment.
  2. **Marshmallow Root (Althaea officinalis)** - Similar to slippery elm, marshmallow root offers mucilaginous properties that help soothe the gut lining. Its gentle, soothing effect can alleviate discomfort and promote the healing of the intestinal wall.
  3. **Dandelion Root (Taraxacum officinale)** - Dandelion root acts as a mild laxative and has prebiotic properties, feeding beneficial gut bacteria. It also supports liver function, an essential aspect of overall digestive health, by promoting bile production.
  4. **Chamomile (Matricaria recutita)** - Chamomile is widely recognized for its anti-inflammatory and antispasmodic properties, making it beneficial for relieving digestive discomfort such as cramping and bloating. It also helps to relax the nervous system, reducing stress that can adversely affect the gut.
  5. **Fennel Seed (Foeniculum vulgare)** - Fennel seed is known for its carminative properties, helping to expel gas and relieve bloating. Its antispasmodic effects can also soothe muscle contractions in the digestive tract, easing discomfort.
  6. **Ginger Root (Zingiber officinale)** - Ginger stimulates digestion and has been shown to possess anti-inflammatory properties. It can help to calm nausea and improve gastric motility, aiding in the efficient digestion and absorption of nutrients.
  7. **Inulin (from Chicory Root, Cichorium intybus)** - As a prebiotic fiber, inulin helps to nourish and increase the beneficial bacteria in the gut. This supports a healthy balance in the microbiome, which is critical for overall digestive health.
This herbal formula combines herbs with complementary actions to support the gastrointestinal system holistically. It aims to soothe irritation, reduce inflammation, stimulate digestion, and nurture the microbiome. For optimal synergy, the formula should be tailored to the individual's specific needs and taken under the guidance of a healthcare professional, especially considering potential allergies or contraindications with existing medications.
Conclusion:
The future of FMTs holds great promise but also necessitates a robust framework for research, regulation, and ethical considerations. The establishment of standardized protocols for donor screening, stool processing, and patient follow-up, alongside rigorous clinical trials, will be essential to unlocking the therapeutic potential of FMTs in a safe and effective manner. Moreover, the development of synthetic or defined microbial communities may offer a more controlled and predictable alternative to whole-stool transplantation. Until such advancements are realized, the dangers of the underground FMT market — a market driven by desperation and opportunism — remain a pressing concern for public health, warranting immediate attention and action from both the medical community and regulatory agencies.

2024.05.20 14:28 HourUnderstanding297 What are your GI symptoms?

I have had GI issues on and off over the last year but it’s been constant the past 2 months. Constant stomach/abdominal pain with burning/grumbling all the time. It’s not severe but it is constant which concerns me. I never get but a few hours relief and it starts back up. I often still feel hungry after big meals. I am a 32 year old woman, 5’10 and 148 lb so I am a healthy weight for my height. I eat really well. I’ve cut out gluten, most sugars, and only eat real good quality foods most of the time…. I was treated recently for candida overgrowth in my gut and got better for a few weeks but back to feeling like crap. Curious to know what y’all’s GI symptoms are like. Any advice is also appreciated.

2024.05.20 12:10 JazzlikeAssist4617 Leaky gut syndrome

I’m not sure how much this has been talked about on here so sorry if I’m asking questions that have been discussed already. I recently discovered “leaky gut syndrome” which is associated with malabsorption, the main symptom I’ve been experiencing. I HAVE to eat every 3-4 hours or I start feeling weak and ill. I have never in my life gotten this hungry so quickly after eating extremely full meals. I have looked into leaky gut and google tells me it’s somewhat of a “medical mystery”? Is leaky gut a root cause for SIBO? My last round of AB did nothing. If I fix leaky gut can I fix SIBO?

2024.05.20 10:54 sarecycling How Microplastics Harm Human Health?

How Microplastics Harm Human Health?
Microplastics, minute plastic particles measuring less than 5 millimeters in diameter, have infiltrated every corner of our environment, from the deepest ocean trenches to the highest mountain peaks. These pervasive pollutants, stemming from various sources including plastic recycling processes, pose significant threats to both ecosystems and human health. This article delves into the mechanisms by which microplastics harm human health, examining the pathways of exposure, the biological impacts, and the broader implications for public health.

Understanding Microplastics

Sources and Types

Microplastics originate from two primary sources:
  1. Primary Microplastics: Manufactured at a microscopic size, these include microbeads in personal care products and pre-production plastic pellets.
  2. Secondary Microplastics: Result from the fragmentation of larger plastic debris due to environmental degradation processes such as UV radiation, physical abrasion, and chemical reactions.

Pathways of Human Exposure

Humans are exposed to microplastics through multiple pathways, including:
  1. Ingestion: Consumption of contaminated food and water is the most common route. Microplastics have been detected in seafood, table salt, and even bottled water.
  2. Inhalation: Airborne microplastics, present in indoor and outdoor environments, can be inhaled. These particles originate from sources such as synthetic fibers in textiles and tire wear.
  3. Dermal Contact: Although less studied, direct skin contact with microplastics, especially in consumer products like cosmetics, may represent another exposure route.

Biological Impacts of Microplastics

Physical Effects

Microplastics can cause direct physical harm to the human body:
  1. Gastrointestinal Distress: Ingested microplastics can cause irritation and damage to the gastrointestinal tract. Studies have shown the presence of microplastics in human stools, indicating their passage through the digestive system.
  2. Respiratory Issues: Inhaled microplastics can lodge in the respiratory tract, potentially causing inflammation and respiratory distress. The small size of these particles allows them to penetrate deep into the lungs, leading to potential chronic respiratory conditions.

Chemical Contaminants

Microplastics act as vectors for harmful chemicals:
  1. Additives: Plastics contain various chemical additives, such as phthalates, bisphenol A (BPA), and flame retardants. These substances can leach out of microplastics and enter the human body, disrupting endocrine function and causing other health issues.
  2. Adsorbed Pollutants: Microplastics can adsorb environmental pollutants, including heavy metals and persistent organic pollutants (POPs). These contaminants, once ingested or inhaled, can accumulate in the body, leading to toxic effects.

Biological Interactions

Microplastics can interact with biological systems in complex ways:
  1. Immune Response: The human immune system may recognize microplastics as foreign invaders, triggering an inflammatory response. Chronic inflammation is linked to various diseases, including cancer and cardiovascular conditions.
  2. Cellular Damage: Studies have shown that microplastics can cause cellular damage, including oxidative stress, DNA damage, and apoptosis (programmed cell death). These effects can lead to tissue damage and contribute to the development of diseases.

Health Implications of Microplastic Exposure

Gastrointestinal Health

Exposure to microplastics can have significant implications for gastrointestinal health:
  1. Microbiome Disruption: Microplastics may disrupt the gut microbiome, the community of microorganisms residing in the gastrointestinal tract. A healthy microbiome is essential for digestion, immune function, and overall health. Disruption can lead to conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).
  2. Intestinal Permeability: Microplastics may increase intestinal permeability, a condition often referred to as "leaky gut." This allows harmful substances to pass through the gut lining into the bloodstream, potentially triggering systemic inflammation and autoimmune diseases.

Respiratory Health

The inhalation of microplastics poses risks to respiratory health:
  1. Inflammation and Fibrosis: Chronic inhalation of microplastics can cause persistent inflammation and fibrosis (scarring) of lung tissue, impairing respiratory function.
  2. Allergic Reactions: Some individuals may develop allergic reactions to microplastics or the chemicals associated with them, exacerbating conditions such as asthma and allergic rhinitis.

Endocrine Disruption

Many of the chemicals associated with microplastics are known endocrine disruptors:
  1. Hormonal Imbalance: Endocrine disruptors interfere with hormone production, release, transport, and metabolism. This can lead to a range of health issues, including reproductive disorders, developmental problems, and metabolic diseases.
  2. Cancer Risk: Long-term exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals is associated with an increased risk of hormone-related cancers, such as breast and prostate cancer.

Neurotoxicity

Emerging research suggests that microplastics may have neurotoxic effects:
  1. Brain Health: Microplastics and associated chemicals can cross the blood-brain barrier, potentially causing neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative changes. This may contribute to conditions such as Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia.
  2. Developmental Neurotoxicity: Exposure to microplastics during critical periods of brain development, such as in utero or early childhood, can impair cognitive function and behavioral outcomes.

Broader Implications for Public Health

Environmental Justice

The burden of microplastic pollution is not evenly distributed:
  1. Vulnerable Populations: Communities living near plastic production and recycling facilities, or those reliant on seafood for subsistence, may face higher levels of exposure and associated health risks.
  2. Socioeconomic Disparities: Lower-income populations often have less access to clean water and air, exacerbating the health impacts of microplastic pollution.

Public Health Policy

Addressing the health impacts of microplastics requires comprehensive public health policies:
  1. Regulation of Plastic Production: Policies aimed at reducing plastic production and promoting safer alternatives can mitigate microplastic pollution at the source.
  2. Waste Management and Recycling: Improving waste management practices and enhancing plastic recycling processes can reduce the release of microplastics into the environment.
  3. Research and Monitoring: Increased funding for research on the health effects of microplastics and the development of monitoring systems is crucial for informed policy-making.

Mitigation and Prevention Strategies

Individual Actions

Individuals can take steps to reduce their exposure to microplastics:
  1. Dietary Choices: Reducing consumption of packaged and processed foods, and opting for fresh, whole foods can decrease ingestion of microplastics.
  2. Water Filtration: Using water filters that are effective at removing microplastics can reduce exposure from drinking water.
  3. Reducing Plastic Use: Minimizing the use of plastic products, particularly single-use items, can contribute to lower overall microplastic pollution.

Community and Industry Initiatives

Community and industry initiatives play a vital role in addressing microplastic pollution:
  1. Awareness Campaigns: Educating the public about the sources and impacts of microplastics can drive behavioral changes and support for policy measures.
  2. Corporate Responsibility: Companies can adopt sustainable practices, such as using alternative materials, improving product design to minimize shedding of microplastics, and investing in advanced recycling technologies.

Technological Innovations

Technological advancements are crucial for mitigating microplastic pollution:
  1. Advanced Filtration Systems: Developing and deploying advanced filtration systems for wastewater treatment plants can capture microplastics before they enter waterways. These systems often incorporate fine mesh screens, membrane bioreactors, and advanced oxidation processes to effectively remove microplastics from wastewater.
  2. Innovative Materials: Research into biodegradable and eco-friendly materials can reduce the environmental persistence of plastics and the formation of microplastics. These alternative materials, such as polylactic acid (PLA) and polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA), degrade more quickly and do not fragment into harmful microplastics, thus offering a sustainable solution to plastic pollution.
  3. Catalytic Pyrolysis: Catalytic plastic pyrolysis machine is an advanced process that uses catalysts to break down plastic waste into valuable products like fuels and chemicals, reducing the accumulation of plastic waste and its conversion into microplastics. This technology enhances the efficiency of pyrolysis, lowering the temperature and energy requirements for the process, and can be integrated with existing waste management systems to handle various types of plastic waste more effectively. By converting plastic waste into useful products, catalytic pyrolysis offers a promising method to mitigate microplastic pollution while providing economic benefits.

Conclusion

The pervasive presence of microplastics in our environment and their potential to harm human health necessitate urgent attention. From gastrointestinal and respiratory issues to endocrine disruption and neurotoxicity, the impacts of microplastic exposure are wide-ranging and profound. Addressing this emerging public health threat requires a multifaceted approach, encompassing individual actions, community and industry initiatives, and robust public health policies. By reducing plastic production, improving waste management, and fostering technological innovations, we can mitigate the risks posed by microplastics and protect human health for future generations.

2024.05.20 04:26 existentialshaman Why does my joints hurt

I don’t think I have sibo cause I can eat fodmap foods no problem and don’t burp. My functional doctor tells me I have dysbiosis with too little good bacteria. I also probably have candida cause candida diet works well for my skin itches. If I go off it I have issues. I do have leaky gut. And my joints have been hurting so am afraid I have arthritis cause cold makes it worse. I started drinking kefir today for probiotics.
My joint pain got worse after taking cats claw (which I took cause it was in leaky gut and parasite protocol). Now I wonder if it triggers some impending autoimmune disease…
Scared.
Any thoughts are welcome.

2024.05.19 23:56 taclovitch RBC Brooklyn Half — Missed PR, Wrongly Estimated Fitness, and Learning The Hard Way

I just finished the RBC Brooklyn Half yesterday, after a 12-week training program. I’d built up a lot of expectations for the race, for a whole host of interrelated reason (that I’ll unpack in the body of this thing); all those expectations, unfortunately, caused me to get carried away, and made my experience of the race overall 1) unenjoyable while I was running and 2) disappointing after I finished.
I’m a teacher, and I frequently relay this paraphrasing of a Confucius quote to my kids: “We can either learn how to act by imagining consequences and reflecting, which is best; or by watching others make mistakes, which is hard (though not for us). The most difficult way to learn is through experience, but if that’s what it takes, then that’s what it takes.” One of my top-upvoted comments of all time is in this sub, telling people to not ruin a race for themselves by over-fixating on time-goals at the expense of enjoying their race.
And yet—

Race Information

Goals

Goal Description Completed?
A Sub or Equal 1:32 No
B Sub 1:35 No
C Finally Pace Myself Properly No

Splits

Split Pace Time
5k 7:04 21:55
10k 7:20 44:42
15k 7:12 1:07:03
20k 8:23 1:33:03
Finish 7:55 1:38:2X

Background Context

I started running in Oct of ‘22, and caught the bug. I ran a half in April of ‘23 in 1:47, and loved the distance. I built base over the summer to ~30-35 mpw, and then trained for the Philly Half in Nov of ‘23. Ended up getting a 1:38:0X in that race, which was really exciting. More exciting was that I approximately even-split that race — my second half took ~30 seconds longer than the first. I left that race feeling exactly how I wanted to — like a washcloth wrung out completely. I felt like that race & time represented the absolute best of my ability, given my current level of fitness; and I felt like I tried my best the whole way through.
Last important piece of context re: diagnosing this race’s disappointment: between Oct of ‘22 and Nov ‘23 I went from ~240 lbs avg to ~195 lbs average. My lowest weight dipped to the high 180s, but I stabilized around 190 pretty quickly.

Training

I used Runna to train for Philly and really enjoyed the experience. My organizational skills are pretty lacking, and I spend 100% of them in other areas of my life — so I enjoy using an app that offloads some of that cognitive lift for me, fully worth the sub during training blocks.
As far as milage, I managed:
Week Miles (Ran / Goal)
1 25 / 33 mi mi (missed 2 runs from travel)
2 32 / 36 mi (missed 1 run b/c travel)
3 38 /38 mi
4 12 / 20 mi (deload, missed 2 runs from illness)
5 28 / 38 mi (missed 2 runs from illness carried over from previous week)
6 40 / 40 mi
7 43 / 43 mi
8 23 / 23 mi
9 50 / 43 mi (extended 2 easy runs by ~3 miles apiece)
10 43 / 40 mi
11 29 / 35 mi (missed 1 run due to illness)
12 23 / 23 mi (including race).
As I’m sure you can already see, I missed a meaningful amount of runs due to illness/other life interruption. Concurrent with all this is the fact that my wife is due with our 2nd child in, well, like a week and a half from now; so a lot of the missed runs in weeks 1-5 also reflect a dramatic net increase in my responsibilities b/c of my wife feeling out of it / not being able to get as much done as normal (no shade at all; she’s literally building a new human that wasn’t there before). Overall I got ~92% of all milage done, running 388 miles during these 12 weeks. Mistake #1: I didn’t adjust my time goals in light of missing workouts; I figured if I just worked harder to “catch up,” I would be fine.
The plan included 2 quality sessions a week — 1 tempo run and 1 interval session, and the weekend long run frequently had pace thrown in. I vastly prefer tempo to interval running — personally, I cite being ~200 lbs as the reason. Once I get going, it’s easy to keep going, but frequent stops & starts just burn energy that I can’t afford to lose. Mistake #2: as I trained, my weight went from the high 190s to the high 200s, and I raced at ~207 lbs. I wasn’t consistent w/ nutrition during training, and the associated stress of my job, as well as parenting & chores usually handled by 2 people being done mostly by me — I often used lil’ snacks as a quick dopamine fix (adhd heads out there, you know what I’m talking about.)

Pre-Race

I wasn’t sure I’d be able to run the race in the first place — my first daughter (now 7) was born at 36 weeks, and I anticipated my second needing the same (choleostasis enjoyers, rise up). Instead, though, this baby seems primed to go the distance — so I got equal parts excited and nervous to be able to deliver on all my training.
I’d cut my time by 9 minutes from my first to the second half, and tried to be conservative in aiming to cut ~5 minutes between these cycles — so I aimed to run 7:00-7:05 for the race, dipping into the 6:55s if I felt good at the end of the race, and set my A goal for 1:32, and my B goal for 1:35. Mistake #3: I didn’t have any serious qualitative goals, and my quant goals were made too far in advance to be realistic. I also wasn’t proactive in adjusting my goals based on how training was going — despite advocating for that same thing in posts on this sub.
Man, it’s so easy to say smart things, and so hard to actually do them.
About 10 days before my race, I came down with a cough thing that sapped a bit of my energy. Kept me up at night, and sapped ~10-15% of my energy on a given day. The Wednesday before my race I asked my wife, “Do you think 3 days is enough for me to be back at 100%?” And I want to say to other runners out there: if you’re having to ask that question, go ahead and adjust your goals. We’ll tag that as Mistake #4.

The Race

Gorgeous morning. I live ~1.5 miles from the race start, so I walked over to Franklin and then jogged the remaining ~1 mile to the start as a warmup. Skipped bag dropoff for the same reason I don’t like checking bags while flying, did a quick pee (quick pee, long portapotty wait time), and went over to the corral.
My whole “thing” as a runner is that I’m deceptively fast — that is, that I’m most commonly the least-fit looking person out of the people running equivalent paces to myself. When I started running, that gave me a bit of imposter syndrome; any more, I draw on it for motivation. So as I was waiting in Corral C to start, I realized I felt a lot of pressure — to be able to deliver on being fast, to prove that I’m actually fit, whatever. No one outside of myself cares, obviously. But that’s now how this stuff works.

The First 10k — Would’ve Been Great If This Was a 10k

My pacing plan was as follows: don’t exceed 7:00 pace at any point in the first 7 miles; aim for ~7:30-7:45 going up Prospect Park’s big hill; use the downhill at 10k to catch my breath; and use the last 7 miles down Ocean Ave to winch down on speed if I was feeling good, or just hold around 7:05 if I was spent.
I was able to hit the first half of this plan pretty well, as my splits up top suggest. But I could tell, starting as I ran around GAP and into the park, that I was working too hard — the effort I was expending was too much. As I reflect on it now, I realize I was probably in ~1:35 shape (~7:15 splits); but I stubbornly refused to drop down in pace. I noticed my heart rate was in the high 170s as I ran through Prospect Park, where my HM pace usually puts me at 165 on the dot. I tried to tell myself it was race excitement + caffeine. [Arrested Development Narrator Voice: It wasn’t.]
I hit the 10k mark at 45 minutes pretty much on the dot. My 10k PR is 44:0-something. This is when I realized my pacing was probably a bit on the screwed side. I’m fairly capable with distance, and am better at medium-exertion-long-distance than I am at hard-exertion-short-distance (my 10k predicts a slightly better 5k time than I currently race). I thought to myself: “Well, you can always just drop down a bit and hold. What’s the worst that can happen?”

The Worst That Can Happen: AKA You’ll Feel Pretty Silly When You Try to Tell Your 38.5 Week Pregnant Wife That Your Last 6 Miles Were Quote “Unimaginable Suffering” And It “Felt Like It Would Never End”

I had been under the impression that Ocean Ave would be a “gentle downhill,” but had never run it prior to the race. This, dear reader, is a lie. Somehow, the last 6 miles of the race are entirely uphill; or at least, that is what it’ll feel like if you go out 5% over your current level of fitness.
The sun really started to get to me; and while I’d had water & nutrition, my gut wasn’t enjoying it, and I didn’t feel energized or like any second wind was coming. I specifically remember that Mile 9 felt like it took 20 minutes to finish; the last 5k of the race simply wouldn’t arrive.
I pulled off to the side to slow down; first to 7:30, then 7:45, then 8:00, with no respite. My legs were heavy despite feeling fueled — I was just dyin’ out there. My wife had been texting encouragement during the race, and I managed to send her back from my watch at mile 9 “all goals are now out the window,” and it was just about finishing — first, to finish without walking. But I took 2 30-second walk breaks when the fatigue felt unendurable — pulling off to the side and counting down from 30, while getting passed.
That was another feature of the race that made it so challenging — that same dynamic of “being deceptively fast” that I mentioned above came back to bite me, as I got passed continuously by people who’d raced their fitness, rather than their goals, in the first half of the race. That demoralized feeling was incredibly difficult to handle. I hadn’t, before today, understood why someone would quit a race; and now, even though I didn’t quit, I get it.
As I passed mile 11, I realized that, while my initial goal was fully out the window, I could still PB the race, even though my pace between miles 9 and 11 was more than a minute off my goal pace; I’d just need to hold approximately 8:00 pace, and I’d be right up against my prior PB. That didn’t make anything any easier, but it did make me feel like the suffering had a point.
Got an encouraging text from my wife, found some other folks at ~8:00 pace, and tried to lock into that pace next to them. And then I just sort of suffered to the finish line. I don’t know what the views looked like; I’m not sure what the race atmosphere was like. I wish I’d paced myself better so I could have experienced that fully.

Post-Race: Why Don’t They Tell You That You Have to Walk Up Stairs To Get Out of Cyclone Stadium BEFORE You Go Into the Stadium?

Got medal, got water. Drank about 5 consecutive cups of water, and then exited the boardwalk. Texted my wife that it’d been really hard but I finished, and right as I did, a critical mass of finishers arrived such that cell service got knocked out for everyone. Thus began the Long Night of The Soul for me at Cyclone stadium.
I walked in, walked around, realized there wasn’t anything I wanted to do in there, and then tried to go back out; at which point I was told “Exit is out that way,” and I said, “I can’t just go back out? I gotta go upstairs to leave, after running a race? That’s the rule?” The guy who told me didn’t deserve my sass; and I deserved to not go up stairs. Oh well.
I managed to get up the stairs without cramping up (though it was close). I went and looked out over Surf Ave, at everyone walking to and from the race, and just got to sit with my thoughts for a bit. I got myself a bit choked up & had a very dignified little cry at this realization, which I think does fully distill my feelings about the race: “I feel like I tried my hardest, but I don’t feel like I did my best.” I think that we often treat those two statements like they’re interchangeable, but there’s actually a bit of space between those ideas, and my race fell into the gap between them. I both tried very hard the entire time, but also, I could have done a better job pacing myself and picking target times. That disappointment is rough.

To Do Better Next Time

So to conclude this whole long sad love letter to learning: some takeaways, ranked from Most Transferrable (re: life skills) to Most Specific.
  1. Actively listen to ya dang body, fool
Self-explanatory: by setting a goat at the outset of training, and then sort of driving toward it without respect for a lot of recently-added stressors in my life, I didn’t end up running any faster — I just made the running I did do kind of miserable. Next time I intend to use HR & Effort (together!) as a better indication of the pace my body feels comfortable running during the race. We say so much “Trust the taper,” and I think here I’d benefit from reminding myself, “… buuuut the taper doesn’t make impossible things possible.”
  1. Don’t invest so heavily in the quant goal
I got very invested in how proud I would be if I managed to achieve the goal, and that forward-projecting is part of what caused me to overshoot the goal in the first place. Next time around I want to have a process goal to the tune of “Enjoy the race while trying to wring out your body like a washcloth.” Or something; I have time to plan.
  1. Lose 15-20 pounds.
I’m 5’9; I’m strong and I’m heavy. My running has kind of been those two vectors pointing against each other the whole time. But I think I’m at the point where, if I want to be able to sustain 7:00 speeds for more than a 10k, I need to lose some of the excess weight I’m holding onto. I could also do strength training, but I’ve got a baby on the way; heart tells me that getting 7-10% lighter will be a lot easier than getting 7-10% stronger.
So that was training, goals, and next steps. Hopefully, by seeing my mistakes, you’ll be able to avoid them yourself in the future. Hopefully!

2024.05.19 23:37 RocketUnit This can't regenerate a chronic fatigue or maybe something will?

Over the last 10 years, I have gotten very slowly better and better from the most shitty state you can imagine. After 10 years I can at least work full-time, but still, I can't exercise, and eat a lot, so I could gain proper weight.
I'm experimenting with myself with everything I can find and the next in the line is dental probiotics with a lot of S. salivarius because my chronic fatigue and easily becoming throat sick comes from immunity overload located in my neck, probably tonsils (incl. stones). It's every time a breathing system problem. Starts every time in the throat.
Since I started to get some good money now, I'm not waiting for anything and I already ordered AHCC. I hope this will have some observational effect to extremely boost my immunity to kill and overpower the shit I'm fighting with.
Since the immunity system is the most energy-demanding system in our body, then immunity overload can cause chronic fatigue and lack of defenses against more immunity challenges like colds. I consider this as a huge problem which I've been trying to slowly solved last 10 years.
I feel my body fighting every day with it and I learned that quality sleep and a healthy gut are significant things for health.
So circadian rhythm and leaky gut protocols were a huge help in the past, which gave me a baseline to keep mysefl healthy. At least if I didn't overload myself. I still had very low energy but at least I had some and I can do little physical activities and I will not get sick after one normal physical sport or game. I still get sick after one and half months of light gym exercise. And then I'm like half sick for months. So it's still bad.
Because I realized that regeneration is a countermeasure to my illness I need to increase regeneration. I found that the liver is responsible, so NAC was really, really, really good help as well. And I'm not leaving it. Moreover, I still need more regeneration. If the AHCC immunity boost will not work to kill even ATB resistance bacteria which I think are the problem causing inflammation in my body. Then I'm going to increase regeneration with peptides.
When I discovered BPC157, it was a no brainer for me to not test it. It was pretty solid!
My regeneration drastically improved and I was able to 1) work the same with less sleep or 2) work more with the same sleep. Now I'm going to test even more of regeneration boost, because the BPC157 pills didn't solve the problem, It was just a another boost or help.
I ordered BPC157+BP500 aka Wolverine regeneration peptide combo. I ordered two packages. First, just for a normal injection and second for a tonsile injection. I think there may be a solution, tonsile regeneration. Maybe it can heal the gabs/holes in my tonsiles where are the tonsile stones created. Maybe the ATB resisntent bacterias having cap there.
I pull out a small number of tonsile stones every month or two. As a first immunity battlefield of our body, most of the infections start in the tonsile. So if the bacteria are stuck there, it is also weakened by normal body function (internal system against environment) in this case breathing.
I breathe through my mouth a lot. Nose breathing is just not enough oxygen for me. Also, 10y ago i had stones a lot, every week I need to pull some out otherwise I would become sick. Pulling stones out was also a big pressure on my immunityso many times I got sick just from that too.
And I can share with you some other things that helped me fucking a lot and I will be buying them in the future for sure.
-> More supplements for the liver. It can be milk thistle (standardized to 80%) which is good on paper, but currently testing the Kalmegh herb pills. I had something similar in the past. It was call Kalamegha tea and it was very helpful. Very slow but it was helping every two months. I got a bit better overall energy with that. It took like a half year to see significant progress. So I could start doing university homeworks and didn't need to sleep every afternoon to gain a bit more energy for a day.
-> HCL, so I can eat a lot without draining my body of too much energy from digestion.
-> Trace mineral drops. I was probably very drained from minerals. Because it was soooo energetic for me to drink it before sleep. Every morning I got a lot of energy. I mean compared to how bad I was feeling.
-> Ginseng because if you are like me you live on hormones. You can be addicted to hormones and maybe you drain your body out of adrenaline too. So Korean Ginseng extracts 6 years old, may be a good option for a supplement too.
There was also one magic happening last year. I found these bonbons called Mentolina with Tirotricina. It's a substance produced by bacteria and it behaves as a surface antibiotic. At the beginning, it was wonderful. I even thought I would be so healthy that I would exercise. After a few months of experimenting, it seems that the effect is over. It's not as powerful anymore. I even bought tirotricina in a bottle from Spain so I can put it on my tonsils and in my nose too. Because I expect I have bacteria in my nouse too. Will test it a bit longer because It's almost newly arrived. One of idea is to put tirotricina into difuser and difuse it during the night when I sleep with open mouth. And my throat illness mostly startingafter sleep. Mostly I wake up and I just feel that immunity wokring too much or I'm became sick.
After Tirotrine bonbons I became able to drink milk in bulk. Even 1l of milk per day without diarrhea. It helped me to gain a little bit of weight finally.
Also, I would like to mention some basic supplements for those who are at the beginning, like bis-glycinate Zink, bis-glycinate Magnesium, D3, and omega-3 in liquid fish oil form. The capsules oxidize too fast. Not worth it.
If anyone experienced read it till this point. If you can add some more value and recommendation... I'm also looking for what next I can do.
