California

Today some Californians will complete their voting in the special general election for CA's US House District 20. Two weeks ago, a primary election was held to fill the seat for a full two-year term starting next year. In that race, two Republicans who are running again today, Vince Fong, a state Assemblyman, and Mike Boudreaux, the Tulare County sheriff, advanced to the November general election."

2024.05.21 17:46 StassiMae75 McBees and their fear of commitment

I woke up on night and my tv was on USA and the show was on. First I'd ever heard of it. I remember thinking 'wow finally a reality show that isnt full if trash pandas, like mama june, or love after lockup.' So I set my dvr, and turned off the tv.
Im on episode 4, and I cannot believe these people!! Steve Sr, wow keep it in ur pants dude! And Brooke, wake tf up lady, does he ever have u at his house? Or does he just meet you out?
I get hes divorced after almost 30 yrs of marriage, but calm down sir. I feel like he likes banging Galyna, but obviously doesn't want a commitment, so basically he's using her for sex and help w his business.
I mean I'm gonna keep watching, but these guys are nothing like I thought they were gonna be 🤣

2024.05.21 17:36 Kelpie-Cat Historical fiction centred around women but with no sexual violence

Does anyone have recommendations in this vein? I love historical fiction centred on women, but I have PTSD and don't want to read anything with sexual violence or any sort of sexual abuse. I know it's part of history (I study women's history) but I don't want to read about it in my free time. I use StoryGraph but when I try to filter for this it usually just shows me books that haven't had content warnings added for them yet.
Some books I have read that I think fit this:
Some books that were OK for me (had brief references but didn't trigger full PTSD episodes)
Thank you!

2024.05.21 17:09 Drm5145 How do I download a full season through unchained / real debris?

For some reason whenever I search and find a torrent, I can only download one file at a time. I want to be able to download a full season of Buffy the vampire Slayer but it's making me select one episode at a time and Chrome only lets me download six at a time

2024.05.21 17:03 dirgeface Are Werepeople bisexual?

I’m on episode 10 and trying to imagine the orientations of the Werehouse nightclub. Do you guys figure these are entirely straight animals in this club? Like full on Travises dancing on all fours? Or are they bisexual hybrids? Do they give finger guns while holding their drinks? Do the horse bodyguards have hands that could forcibly roll their pant cuffs, or do they need to like push up the sleeves of their denim jacket with hooves? Griffin made it sound like Fishstick is sitting in a VIP booth, but if he is a full bisexual, he would technically not be able to sit properly. I really have never thought about anything.

We did a podcast this week discussing Mussolini's 'Doctrine of Fascism' and the conversation regarding the connection between American Progressivism and European Fascism came up. I contend that these are essentially sister ideologies - both collectivist and authoritarian in similar ways:
Love of war Nationalization of industry High taxation Use of the corporate world to be productive for the state Use of media as propaganda wing of the state And love of Ancient Rome

2024.05.21 16:50 Miceva007 Why do we think the last few episodes saved his character?

I ask because it’s seems like people are making it seem like he really got himself together towards the end and I’m just confused. The main thing I got from this show was selfishness is fulled by allowance. I just didn’t understand why everyone around him just allowed him to treat them any way. From the friend thing to his parents nobody sat there and was like you need to stop cause you’re doing too much. I also wanted to point out that his goal was to not only show his vulnerability but also the other around him and he wasn’t mindful to that at all. This was 8 episodes of him antagonizing the people he “cares” about and trying to project a perception of himself that he thinks he is.

2024.05.21 16:37 BryceOConnor As the Patreon and this sub grow, I've been getting more and more comments about how "slow" I am. This is true. I AM slow. However... I thought it might be interesting to talk about my job(s) and work schedule, to give a little context 😁

As the Patreon and this sub grow, I've been getting more and more comments about how
Hey everyone! So after my query last week I decided it was indeed past time for me to provide a write-up of my work and work schedule, especially after SO many people let me know in comments and in DMs that they had no idea I was not a full-time author. I completely understand the confusion, of course. I WAS a full-time author for several years, after all, and beyond that my transition back to having a job was atypical for an author because it did not result from any loss of success (so far) on the part of my work.
Instead, it was of my own making.

TLDR

For those of you only looking for the essentials: While STORMWEAVER (and my other titles when I can get to them) are absolutely a priority to me, I am also the CEO of Wraithmarked Creative, LLC the parent company of two large production brands: Wraithmarked Creative (publishing and special/ deluxe edition adaptation via Kickstarter) and Witchsong Miniatures (tabletop monster miniatures and player character models).
This work has me in charge of 7 full-time employees and dozens of part-time freelancers and artists, and is sometimes 60+ hours a week on top of my writing time, especially if I'm traveling.

TIMELINE

For the longer version, let's start with a very brief timeline of my writing career, so that people can get a sense of how I went full time, then back to working:
  • 2014: I graduated with my DPT (Doctorate of Physical Therapy) and entered the workspace. I worked in special needs pediatric rehab for 3 years. During this time I publish the first three book in THE WINGS OF WAR series.
  • 2017: I go full time as an author (and almost fall flat on my face).
  • 2019: I publish A MARK OF KINGS, which sees good success and saves me. I form the concept of Wraithmarked Creative around idea of partnered-publishing, like I'd published AMoK with Luke Chmilenko (and would do again in 2020 with IRON PRINCE). I form the company later this year.
  • 2020: We start publishing works like SAVAGE DOMINION with partnered authors, and see good success. IRON PRINCE takes off, becoming more popular than I could have dreamed. I hire my first full-time worker, Ben, to help me manage the publishing work.
  • 2021: We run a successful Kickstarter for a Deluxe Edition of A MARK OF KINGS, and realize there is a market for these kinds of books even for smaller authors (this was before the Sanderson campaign and Kickstarter's explosion as a publishing platform for Special/Deluxe Editions).
  • 2022: Wraithmarked publishes MOTHER OF LEARNING everywhere, and THE SWORD OF KAIGEN's Special Edition on Kickstarter, gaining us a TON of traction. I hire my second full time work, Eira, and STK Kreations agrees to work with us consistently on design. At the same time, Witchsong Miniatures launches and quickly becomes one of the largest 3D-printing miniatures brands on the internet, with Ben in charge of the brand. We hire Otavio to handle our modeling.
  • 2023: Our Kickstarter production model kicks into high gear, with us producing the likes of LEGENDS & LATTES, NEON GHOSTS, and the rest of MOTHER OF LEARNING. FIRE AND SONG also releases, as does the hardcover campaign for STORMWEAVER. Witchsong continues to grow, and we expand into The Witchguild for player miniatures. I hire three more full time workers, Taya, Gage, and Heather.
  • 2024/Present: Wraithmarked continues to expand, with us publishing the likes of V.E. Schwab and R.A. Salvatore on Kickstarter. We sign numerous other big names in both traditional and indie publishing, and bring on Tom to help us with art direction (previously my job). Witchsong brands expand their Kickstarter presence.
As I think many of you will be able to tell from reading the above breakdown, building up Wraithmarked has been (and very much continues to be) a tremendous amount of work. Hiring everyone has allowed us to expand, and only in the last few months have some of my more-intensive responsibilities been able to be handed off to Taya (asset/deadline coordination) and Tom (art direction). Before that, on top of my other responsibilities I was the one in charge of finding the dozens on dozens of artists we work with, as well as stay on top of their art and their deadlines. It has been godsend to hand over 90% of that work of late.

WEEKLY/DAILY SCHEDULE

Now, as for my weekly/daily schedule, I thought that would be a fun thing to break down for you as well, especially given strict guidelines are the only way I keep things moving and productive given my damn ADHD diagnosis. Of course, what I'm writing up is how my days are SUPPOSED to go. In a perfect world, this is my schedule every day, but sadly that's not always the case. Sometimes I'm unwell, sometimes I have a meeting conflict, sometimes I'm up late on a call with a different timezone (or up stupid early, as is the case with Japan). So please take the following with a grain of salt. That being said, it is 100% true that my schedule is regimented to the 15min mark at this point.
DAILY SCHEDULE:
https://preview.redd.it/89ubft51fs1d1.png?width=1218&format=png&auto=webp&s=d2a81e8b7cec902eec27b5f26fe39e66d52af46b
  • 5:15-5:45am - My typical wakeup/morning routine/light breakfast. This includes of physical rehab for chronic back, knee, and ankle injuries I've built up over the years (yaaaay being a life-long athlete... sigh). I don't set an alarm, as I just wake up around this time consistently now.
  • 5:45-7:00am - My warmup/cardio workout/warmdown time. At the start of this year I started running because of unhealthy weight gain and related issues, building up to 5 days a week. If I don't, my entire day is thrown off.
  • 7:00-7:30am - My lifting/stretching time. My lifting is currently minimal, to maintain muscle mass while I run.
  • 7:30-8:00am - Doggy time! Arro gets lots of walks, snacks, and belly rubs.
  • 8:00-9:15am - First block of work. This is usually when I get to the batch of emails that rolled in overnight, when I handle our social media stuff I'm still in charge of, and when I communicate with the WM (Wraithmarked) team about the day and answer any questions they have.
  • 9:15-9:45am - Prep my caffeine and power nap. I don't survive without laying down once or twice a day.
  • 9:45-10:00am - Caffeine and writing prep time, getting Scirvener and research windows set up.
  • 10:00-12:00pm - Writing time! I don't always use this full chunk of writing, and somtimes and extend over it. Depends on how my productive juices are flowing that day. I am not a writer who is capable of writing until a timer goes off. I run out of gas and end when what I know what happens next ends.
  • 12:00-1:00pm - Lunch! Man has to eat, and I try to catch an episode or two of either Philip deFranco, Last Week Tonight, Kurzgesagt, or whatever anime I'm watching (after I'm done eating cause I can't eat and watch subtitles haha).
  • 1:00-4:00pm - Second work block! This is usually doing coms with the team, address art or publishing concerns, or when my meetings are booked. And I have a LOT of meetings -_-
  • 4:00-4:30pm - Doggy time #2! Arro also spends most of the day with me in the office snoring, so we get quality time when he's in the mood haha.
  • 4:30-5:30pm - Dinner! I know it's pretty early, but I eat a small breakfast very early, so I'm starving by 5 usually. Also, if it's a hell day I crash by 8 or 9pm, and I have one of those angry tummies that makes me have trouble sleeping if I ate much of anything within a couple hours of bedtime.
  • 5:30-6:00pm - Power nap #2! This isn't an everyday thing, but it definitely happens, especially on crazy days. If I don't need it I'll either play with the pup or get to work early.
  • 6:00-9:00pm - Work block #3! No team coms outside over emergencies. I don't let me team work outside of 8 to 4, which are their working hours. I don't always work this full block either, and do try to keep it to mindless stuff I can do on the couch while hanging with Arro and listening to music.
  • 9:00-10:00pm - Reading/reasearch time. I like this to be personal time when I can, but sadly I'm often reading things that wouldn't be my first choice so that I can stay on top of the market/know what's popularesearch something specific for writing/publishing/minis.
  • 10:00pm - Latest I'm usually trying to crash for the night.
WEEKLY SCHEDULE:
I follow this schedule 6 days of the week, with Sundays being a very strict day off for me from almost everything. Those are the days I often find a show to binge, or work on my home, or sit in the back yard with the pup reading only what I want to read haha. I do also get Thursday morning's off running, through I do do extra walking with the pup or walking to Wegmans (grocery store) from my house to make up the steps.

THAT'S ABOUT IT!

Hopefully this will provide some context to those interested in my work schedule/how I regiment my ADHD. Additionally, if someone compains or asks about how slow I am, I hope you guys will be able to direct them here from now on to provide them with more context!
I hope this was helpful, and I'm happy to answer any questions you guys have in the comments!

2024.05.21 16:33 MiamisLastCapitalist Essay: Grandma Edna vs the future by Andrew Heaton

So I was listening to a podcast by comedian Andrew Heaton (X), and he had a very interesting episode examining people's nostalgia for the American 1950's complete with humorous skits. For illustration's sake he assumed 50's America was another country called "Fiftiesland" and compared it's stats like GDP or live expectancy to Modern America. He conclude that a lot of the nostalgia came from how many astonishing improvements happened between 1900-1950 vs 1950-2024, even though Modern America is superior in almost every metric.
At the end he had a long monologue where he was trying to explain to his fictional Grandma Edna Bickle, born in 1889 and elderly by the 50's, what it'd be like in the future compared to how she grew up. Imagine trying to explain Netflix to someone who grew up with a radio.
It really demonstrates, in a lighthearted way, just how far we've come in ~125 years.
So imagine how astonishing the world will be in another 100, 300, or 500 years...
Anyway, it's a bit of a read, but I thought some of you all might enjoy it and Mr Heaten was nice enough to send me the transcript. Enjoy!
My great grandmother, Edna, was born in 1889. My Dad and I were recently reminiscing about her, and he said, “Gramma Bickle, tough old bird, tough old bird. Went blind at ninety-two, quit driving at ninety-four, died at ninety-six. Almost lived in three different centuries.” I have some immediate questions about that chronology, and the realization that Gramma Bickle apparently drove her car blind for two full years before handing her keys in, but I digress.
In 1954 my great gramma Bickle was sixty-five years old. Think about how the country changed from her childhood to her golden years. From when she was born, to a little younger than my parents are today, she saw an entire country go from horse and buggies and pretty much nobody owning a car, to almost everybody has a car. Only six percent of the homes in America had electricity when she was a teenager. By the mid nineteen fifties, the whole country is throbbing with electricity.
In her lifetime, the country went from basically no light bulbs, radios, telephones, refrigerators, or washing machines, to a country where all of that stuff is ubiquitous.
In the year 1900, only ten percent of American households had a stove in them. By 1960,--when my great grandmother is the same age as my parents are now—95% of households do. When she was born, anti-biotics didn’t exist, and polio could cripple your baby. By the time she’s my age, penicillen—a miracle drug!—has been invented. By the time she’s my parents’ age, penicillen is widely available and some genius has recently invented a polio vaccine.
So, if we’re looking at Fiftiesland as a country around today, here’s what’s going on. All of the old people in this country, in their lifetime, went from a horse-and-buggy 19th century third world economy with polio and no electricity—something that, if it existed today, we would be sending anthropoligsts to—to a more modern second world economy perhaps akin to contemporary Guatemala. Which is no small jump.
And the people my age who live in Fiftiesland are still celebrating kicking the crap out of the Nazis, inventing the atom bomb, and enjoying an economy which is comparatively booming—because all of the neighboring economies are rubble.
If Gramma Bickle, at forty years old, my age now, could somehow visit me in contemporary America—she would think I made a pact with Lucifer, the Prince of Darkness. Or maybe, maybe her progeny somehow goes on to conquer Oklahoma as warlords, and all her great grandchildren become opulant Oriental sultans.
I have an icebox in my kitchen that’s powered by lightning that lives in my wall. I have another smaller box that makes my food hot by shooting it with invisible particles like the ray gun from War of the Worlds.
Not only do I let my dog sleep in a tiny bed inside my house, like a toddler, we just finished up a round of antiobitics from when he cut his foot. My great-grandfather—this is true—lived with tuburculosis for years before it finally killed him. Anyway, see that dog I make wear a necktie for my amuesment? Yeah, my dog takes miracle drugs unavailable to John D. Rockefeller. Last year Wallace got elbow cancer but the doctor fixed that, no problem, took a couple of months. Wallace literally has better medical treatment available to him a mile from my house than any human being alive in 1950.
Gramma, you wanna watch Netflix, Paramount Plus, HBO, Peacock, or Amazon Prime? It’s television. Well, television is sort of like radio, only much better, and with images, and I can watch it whenever I want, and there are thousands of options. Like, imagine Broadway, only, like, a few thousand of them, and they’re all inside of that rectangle.
Huh, yeah, I’m not explaining that very well. Right. Okay, so you know how in your time you know multiple people who were literally slaves at some point in their life? Like, you personally know some older people who were, at one point, legally a form of property?
So basically, I have this glass rectangle on my wall that a million of the world’s greatest comedians and dramatists live inside of as my slaves, and they put on plays for me when I’m tired after work. Except I don’t have to feed them or pay them because I use my friend Nick’s HBO account. They just eat the lightning that lives in my wall.
What? Oh yes, I get very tired from work, Gramma. Really get [sigh] worn out, you know? Well, you know how your dad was a wheatfarmer, who spent hours and hours plowing through dust and boneshards in Indian Territory, where he might literally be shot by a Commanche, and the threat of looming starvation for the entire family was never more than one drout away?
Right, so I… I talk for a living. Yeah, that’s right. No, a bunch of strangers just sort of send me money every month cause they enjoy hearing me talk. It’s actually very challenging. Because! Gramma, I do a lot research, you see. Like for this episode, I had to read a lot, and I had to do a lot of math. No, I did not personally do the math.
I have another magical rectangle that has several thosuand math slaves trapped inside that do the actual math for me. When I was a kid I had to perssonally punch the equations in myself, and the rectantle would crunch the numbers. Those were hard times. Now I have a smarter glass rectangle that I can just talk to. I just type in, “Hey, average these ten numbers, okay” and there’s, I dunno, like translater slaves that talk to the math slaves, and they all figure out whatever I’m trying to say, increasingly in lower case and with minimal punctuation, and then give me the answer.
But I have to do the research. Like, I have to read a lot. No, I don’t go to a library. I have another rectangle that has all of the world’s libraries inside of it, and also a lot of pornography, so I just stay at home and look at that particular rectangle, alteranting between research and pornography depending on my mood.
It sure is tough, Gramma. I don’t have any coworkers to keep me company. I’m all by myself here in my well-lit, smokeless, air conditionined home. That’s right, air conditioning! Not just in my house, either—in my camper—which is a tiny extra house I tow behind my armored, self-propelling buggy, which I feed fermented dinosaur juice they pump out of the ground. Oh yeah. It has a rectangle in it that plays music. I’d say I have roughly… three to eight million musician slaves who live in the rectangle in my car, so I don’t get bored when driving to the movies, which is a very large rectangle I go to when I’m tired of watching rectangles on my couch.
What? Good question. It’s called a “camper” because I go camping in it. It’s sort of my hobby. You see, Gramma, my life is so stupidly cushy and comfortable that I amuse myself by going out into the woods to forego wall lightning, air conditioning, and even pornography sometimes, when I can’t get a signal, and instead I sit in a hammock and shit in holes I dig for fun. We call that “roughing it.” For sport, I spend hundreds if not thousands of dollars doing what your entire family did their entire lives until they finally got indoor plumbing, except of course my camper has a propane stove built in, whereas your pioneer family had to dig a hole in the side of a hill and cower in it from the weather like cavemen while burning cow dung for warmth. I dunno where propane comes from. Probably dinosaur farts or something.
Anyway, I prefer to travel around in my camper rather than fly—that’s right, fly—yeah, like a spitfire pilot—which I do multiple times a year using frequent flier points. Which are sort of free, imaginary coupons that banks give me to thank me for using their credit cards, which are also rectangles, but these particular rectangles are small and flat and full of slave bankers that live in my pocket, next to my nine-billion dollar super computer I mostly use as a map, so I don’t have to go through the hassle of folding and unfolding maps, and also to send funny pictures to people in Scotland, in between watching porn in the woods.
I digress. Let’s all take a deep breath. Somebody from my great grandmother’s generation, who lived long enough to be an adult in Fiftiesland, would rightly think: We live in a golden age! We live in the future!
Back in contemporary America, my parents are in their early seventies. My parents today are about how old Gramma Bickle was at the end of the 1950s. And the jump isn’t bad, but it’s not nearly as mind-blowing. The developments they’ve seen since childhood are very impressive in terms of computers and telecommunications and medicine, but otherwise, the world they live in is a more efficient, clever version of the world they grew up in. Cars are safer and more comfortable and fuel efficient, but they’re still basically cars. LED lights are cheaper than incandescent bulbs, but they’re still essentially electric lights. Penicillan is better, but it’s still just clinical mold that strategically murders errant bacteria.
If Fiftiesland were a country, rather than our own history, we would pretty much look at it sort of how we see the poorer parts of Latin America or Eastern Europe: a very nice place with lovely people, wonderful to visit, try the food. Get some funky vintage clothes while you’re there.
But a comparatively poor economy to America or Western Europe. You wouldn’t want to immigrate there for the money. And also, not surprisingly, some views about gender, sex before marriage, having kids really young, having lots of kids, and skepticism about homosexuality that a globetrotter and even quite a few conservatives today might be tempted to call “quaint” or “traditional.”
Basically, if Fiftiesland were a country today, we would view it like Honduras or Moldova, or maybe Czechoslavkia after the wall came down.

2024.05.21 16:27 BlazingDodo_returns What made you start watching MTV and splits villa ? How old were you ?

So I am going to be honest. My cousin used to watch this when I visited him in mumbai at the age of 16. I thought this was some idiotic stuff.
Fast forward last year at the age of 22 I saw a clip of Ashwini abusing a girl and I couldn’t laugh more. Call it the stress of adulthood or escape from my mediocre life. Him abusing the girl, was the funniest thing I watched. Reminded me of my life and innocence back in the days where everything was not held up to such an insanely tight standard by society and not everything would blow out of proportion on the internet. I tracked the clip down and watched half the season up until the moment ashwini and the next episode his friend abused participants.
That’s what got me attracted to the show. I would keep seeing reels of X3 participants especially palak and Nikhil from time to time, and decided to watch it and loved that season. This got me hooked to splittsvilla and now I am following the current season. For roadies and splittsvilla both.
In brief, ashwini kaul was how I found out splittsvilla existed and boom bam gang I why I will be watching this show till its grave or mine.
I only watched half of ashwini season, and full of X3 and hopefully full of this one.
