2024.05.22 00:44 Kidlike101 (long dream) I dreamt a full story, character arcs and all.

In the dream we "fell" into a weird city. By we I mean me and a few family members including my grandparents.
.
Anyway the city is exceptionally clean and the people there very religious with regular sermons.
.
Now I instinctively hated it because everyone was smiling all the time and had this "be like everyone else" attitude. It was a bit creepy.
.
Over time I got to know a few people there well enough to get invited to a wedding. Here's the odd part, for how religious they were the bride was practically naked! I tried to hint that the dress might not be appropriate for a church wedding but got laughed at since it was a TRADITIONAL wedding dress... it was a slip of see-through fabric with beading covering her privates...
.
Then the brides entourage came in and yeah they confirmed it was a lovely traditional dress. Also why was I dressed like that? Clearly that was too much and the bride's aunt tried to take my bra off to match everyone. (one of us, one of us, one of us).
.
When I refused she took of her own bra and offered to swap since it's smaller so will cover less. I managed to escape to the bathroom promising to practically strip in private.
.
Well, not the bathroom, turned out to be a broom closet / storage area. but at least the crazy people were on the other side, thought I might be able to wait it out.
.
Looking around the storage area I found something odd. There was "old" tech here. By that I mean from our day but the whole city was practically amish that I though we got teleported to the past. I found one device I didn't recognize so when the coast was clear I got out in the open and tried it out.
.
It caused me to shoot through the sky. No literally up through the cloudish part only to discover this wasn't the sky, it was the waters surface. The whole city was under water but since we could breath and move normally we didn't notice! It explained why the sky never had a gradient, it was all one solid color depending on the time of day.
.
On the "sky" two things were notable. First, two groups of golems were fighting and throwing rocks at each other. Rock golems (yellow-orange so maybe sand rock) & slab golems (grey rocks, very smooth). The debris fell to the city blew as gods judgement when it hit someone!
.
Also here was another city. This one was old and basically a ruin over grown with vegetation. Looking through it I found a few people who were far more normal and reasonable.
.
Going back a few time I was convinced something went wrong with our civilization, the city above was clearly one from our time now in ruins while the one underwater was more recently built. The ones living below had such a strong herd mentality that my own family was starting to get compliant and integrate. I tried to talk them into visiting the city in the sky, to see that this is all under water but they weren't interested, especially grandma that was feeling comfortable that grandpa was back in this world (died in 2012). Also wouldn't it be dangerous with the fighting golems? Solve that first then we'll see.
.
Going up I asked the golems why they were fighting... it turned out that was because the sand golem leader had boobs and the slabs saw that as obscene... yeah really... I had them talk it over because the debris was hurting the people below.
.
The sand golem shrugged and said they weren't people, just ants. When I asked about the people in the sky city they said "you don't know already?". As for who I was, well, they were going to talk to the slabs now so if I wanted an answer keep sailing towards the light in distance.
.
This part I didn't mention, during my trips to the sky city I started to notice odd things. Yes it was a modern one now in ruins, yes it was full of plants so it was weird that the people that lived here acted and talked so civilized. But also another thing, witch symbols. Those were everywhere. Shrubs that were cut in the form of a witch's hat or pointy boots, statues of witches, magic symbols carved into the trees... etc. it was like a halloween set up in an ancient ruin. I kept trying to overlook it because the underwater city preached against witchcraft and heresy, clearly those were the nut jobs so anything they say should be disregarded... right? Also the people in the sky city were so normal & reasonable that no way they'd really be the bad guys. The undewater city had to be ignorant, that was totally it.
.
The day I confronted the golems however was the day I found out the truth. While exploring the ruin I came across the communal kitchen. It was just a bunch of old fridges with forged food. One of them however contained a bag of blood. The girl showing me around said "Oh goody, there is one left" and snatched it from my hands sucking it up like capri sun. "Sorry but this is for our coven, Blood is how us witches get our knowledge and stay young after all. Can't share that without a price." Which is when it hit me that everyone here, while talking like an adult, looked so young and ageless. Also that they didn't know that me, and probably my family, would be considered food in a place like this, they thought I was a visiting witch hence the civility.
.
The golem's words hit me hard. Yes, I knew. I just didn't want to acknowledge it because it meant I can't stay here. At the same time I didn't want to go back to the underwater city.
That only left sailing away into the unknown. My family refused to join, they were staying in the underwater city so... just me... Sailing into the light. Took awhile stuck between the two worlds, but in the end I made my own raft and set sail towards the light in the distance.

Part 1 of Mapping the Eros/Psyche Myth in S3: the Wind and Psyche’s Salvation
Hi everyone! Now that season 3, part 1 has aired, I wanted to revisit the Eros/Psyche comparative I wrote just before the season came out. There are a few different things that I wanted to touch on, so I thought I'd start with just a couple of scenes. Here, I will discuss the very early moment in the myth where Psyche is whisked away by the wind to live with Eros and compare that passage to the show. I have some plans for other posts, if people are interested!
Quick note: I am not seeking to imply and direct comparison, inspiration, or intention from the writers. I adopt what we call in scholarship a 'lens' through which I look at Bridgerton. Think of it like a pair of tinted glasses; they change the colors and allow you to see something that exists in a different way or from a different perspective. My lens is the myth of Eros and Psyche, and I use it to observe Bridgerton. It is one of infinite potential interpretations and is intended to be 100% just for fun!
S3E1 Out of the Shadows
Early in the myth of Eros and Psyche, an oracle informs Psyche’s father that she is to be sacrificed on a mountain top, forced to marry a “fierce, barbaric, snake-like monster” as punishment for her beauty (which has made her a rival of Aphrodite). Psyche resigns herself to the death, telling her family that she understands that she is at her own funeral, rather than wedding, procession.
So amidst intense grief the ritual of that marriage with death was solemnized, and the entire populace escorted her living corpse as Psyche tearfully attended not her marriage but her funeral. (excerpt from Apuleius, The Golden Ass 4. 28 - 6. 24)
But as she sits alone on the mountain top, resigned to her fate, a strong wind comes and carries her away to Eros’ castle.
But as Psyche wept in fear and trembling on that rocky eminence, Zephyrus' (the West Wind's) kindly breeze with its soft stirring wafted the hem of her dress this way and that, and made its folds billow out. He gradually drew her aloft, and with tranquil breath bore her slowly downward. She glided down in the bosom of the flower-decked turf in the valley below. (excerpt from Apuleius, The Golden Ass 4. 28 - 6. 24)
The passage evokes ideas of salvation as Psyche is rescued from a fate that appears to be unavoidable, even to Psyche, who appears completely resigned.
“I seek you out…”: These themes suggest the same ideas that were present when Penelope is standing in her garden after accepting Colin’s help in finding a husband in episode 1. When the scene begins, she feels despondent and hopeless, perhaps resigned in the same way that Psyche did, to life as a spinster without freedom or happiness. At the start of the scene, Penelope appears isolated and disconnected from Colin as he appears to be a new person with a new personality.
S3E1 Out of the Shadows
At the end of the scene, once they have reconciled, there is a moment where you see Penelope feel the wind in her hair as she takes a deep breath. The wind may be a reflection of two profound emotional changes in Penelope. The first is not only a restoration of her friendship with Colin and her understanding of him, but perhaps also an expanded sense of their relationship that is more honest than it was before. In the second sense, Penelope’s own faith in her future and hope in it is also restored. In this way, the wind may be a symbolic nod to Colin’s role in facilitating Penelope’s happiness through her salvation. It echoes Eros’ actions in having the wind carry Psyche away from her unhappy life and fated death to her salvation with him.
S3E1 Out of the Shadows
The scene’s choreography is also interesting. Penelope begins sitting down and looking up at Colin; she is depicted as being unmoving, a part of the garden, not in motion or with agency. Her lack of movement may point to resignation (and for those of us who like to read too deeply into things, her place on a stone bench could mirror Psyche’s position on the rock, awaiting her fate). Their unequal status may also represent an inequality in their relationship (interesting in contrast with Colin on his knees in the carriage in episode 4). For a moment, at the end of the scene, they are on equal ground when he sits beside her as they reach an understanding. At the end of the scene, they are both standing, a sign of motion and action. Their handshake is a physical reminder that they are linked.
S3E1 Out of the Shadows
But why is it not a more romantic scene? When thinking of what this scene could be in the show, I hypothesized that it would be the first kiss. However, after watching it, I think that there is a kind of absurdity in this garden scene that highlights why it makes for a better turning point.
In the myth, Eros is carrying Psyche to the place where they will kind of be married. They love each other, but they don’t truly know each other. They are holding a household together but neither of them are mature adults. They are intimate but they are not officially married and do not have the consent of their parents to be so. As a result, they aren’t really married in the ways that would matter to their context.
S3E1 Out of the Shadows
Back in Bridgerton, the absurdity of the handshake, the scandalous nature of their agreement, and the fact that Colin is visiting Penelope outside of her house all point to similar subversive (i.e. against the grain) elements of their relationship. In the eyes of their context (in this case “society”), Colin and Penelope’s friendship shares the same illegitimacy as Eros and Psyche’s.
S3E1 Out of the Shadows
To compound the situation, Eros maintains his divinity without having married Psyche properly while she is still a mortal. Colin and Penelope are still on uneven footing. This is told to us repeatedly in the first half of the season; while Colin is seen as desirable and eligible, Penelope is described as hopeless and on the shelf.

S3 E2 How Bright the Moon
Despite the fact that Colin and Penelope have reconciled, just as Eros and Psyche are living a content life at this stage in the myth, there is still a strong assertion that the relationship is in danger. By the end of Episode 1, Colin's fury with Lady Whistledown is an illusion to the fact that the two individuals still do not know one another and that this is only a temporary respite.
S3E1 Out of the Shadows
Based on these conditions, although it is one of the more romantic points in the myth, the wind of salvation does not necessarily point to the moment when Eros and Psyche become romantically involved. Still, it may more accurately fit with the moment of the restoration of Penelope and Colin’s relationship as friends. Arguably, this is a foundational step that must precede (and maybe supersede?) any romantic acknowledgement. The scene functions as a moment of salvation for Penelope and sets Colin up as a desirable but flawed saviour, highlighting the non-conventional nature of their relationship.
Finally, we’ve got to talk about the balloon: The second notable moment featuring the wind in Season 3 Part 1 occurs during the dramatic sequence with the balloon at the innovations fair. In a reversal of roles from my first assertion in the garden, the balloon scene sees the wind reveal a change in Colin. The scene echoes the same themes of salvation, albeit in a much more explicit way.
A quick reminder: Long before he has rescued Psyche, Aphrodite enlists Eros to shoot Psyche with an arrow and have her fall in love with a horrible beast. Eros, of course, reveals later that he actually shoots himself and falls in love with her, making her his wife:
'I disregarded my mother Venus' instructions when she commanded that you be yoked in passionate desire to the meanest of men, and that you be then subjected to the most degrading of marriages. Instead, I preferred to swoop down to become your lover. I admit that my behaviour was not judicious; I, the famed archer, wounded myself with my own weapon, and made you my wife--and all so that you should regard me as a wild beast, and cut off my head with the steel' (excerpt from Apuleius, The Golden Ass 4. 28 - 6. 24)
Colin's arc mirrors Eros' as he attempts to help Penelope find a husband but finds himself developing feelings for her, instead.
At the Hawkins Balloon exhibition, Colin learns that Penelope has a suitor, making her likelihood of marriage an immediate danger, although he may only shallowly be aware of his feelings by this point in Episode 3. Much like Psyche's impending sacrifice/marriage to the serpent on the rock, this scene would be an interesting stand-in for the moment of salvation, as well.
S3E3 Forces of Nature
While Colin observes Penelope in conversation with Debling throughout the afternoon (albeit unaware that she is not succeeding in charming him), he also notices a strong wind is interfering with the balloon that is on display.
S3E3 Forces of Nature
Sensing impending danger from the Balloon (and perhaps subconsciously, Debling), Colin's eyes are purely worried about the scene that is unfolding in front of him. I won't summarize the episode; we've all already seen it. But, despite being surrounded by debutants after he heroically controls the balloon and while at the subsequent ball, Colin spends the rest of the episode thoroughly mentally preoccupied by Penelope.
The role of the wind, in this case, could be read as a catalyst for Colin's recognition of his ongoing desire to save and protect Penelope. Before the scene at the park, Colin appears to be avoiding speaking about his developing feelings for Penelope (understandable, given the context), but by the Innovation Ball, he is willing to somewhat open up to his mother and approach Penelope herself.
S3E4 Forces of Nature
Likely, it serves as more of a visual cue, a moment of insight into Colin's thought process while inhabiting the Eros figure, as to what would have inspired him to shoot himself with his arrow, rather than allow the Penelope/Psyche character to be married to someone else.
Wrapping up: I don't see these comparisons as being a matter of literary canon for Bridgerton. Still, using the lens of the Eros/Psyche myth, it can be interesting to see how common themes and subjects emerge. Hopefully, you found something here interesting, and thank you for reading!

2024.05.22 00:00 literalsimpnaish Help me rebind to be good!!

So I’m trying to rebind my keybinds after a loooong break from wow. I understand keybinds are completely personal preference but I really want to try and simplify this as much as I can and rework my muscle memory to using keys I should be using for better rotation and performance. I use a 12 button MMO mouse and you’ll see my current layout below… it’s awful. I’m probably too far gone to rebind my basic attack abilities to my keyboard so I’d prefer those stay on my mouse but I was thinking of adding cheap/ kidney to the R & T keys bc my other CC sits there. I keep my mobility at the back of the mouse with sap bc it’s an easy step/sap but overall I feel like my biggest issue is my damage rotation. Feel free to absolutely gut my current layout and offer any suggestions. FYI I play rogue sub/sin and a little priest but want to focus on this for rogue specifically. Please & thank you!
SUB ROGUE QWES - Movement R - T - A - D - kick F - gouge G - blind Z - blades X - dance C - symbols V - secret tech
Mouse: 1 - shadow strike 2 - shuriken toss 3 - shiv 4 - cheap 5 - evis 6 - kidney 7 - rupture 8 - shuriken storm 9 - shadow step 10 - bomb 11 - duel 12 - sap
SHIFT Mouse: S1 - feint S2 - vial S3 - evasion S4 - cloak S5 - shadow meld/ racial S6 - vanish S7 - healthstone S8 - sprint S9 - shadowstep (@party1) S10 - bomb** S11 - duel** S12 - sap (focus)
ALT Mouse: A1 - A2 - A3 - big burst macro (blades/dance/symbols) A4 - A5 - A6 -mini burst macro (dance/symbols) A7 - slice n dice A8 - A9 - shadowstep (@party2) A10 - party cloak A11 - distract A12 - stealth
I target with arena 1/2/3 and bind alt-1/2/3 to blind. I also use scroll up to target nearest enemy player & scroll down to target focus. I normally click target for pets/totems and shift scroll down to target self while shift scroll up sets target to focus.

2024.05.21 22:56 Creative_Camel Just getting started with my studio and recording so Cakewalk or Reaper?

As the title says I’m new to the digital world… but been an amateur musician for decades. Last time I was writing music and recording it was reel to reels and such with mixers and eq racks. Fast forward after marriage, kids, college tuition and kids weddings. So now I’m moving into amp sims thanks to NeuralDSP, and I’ve written about a half dozen songs that I want to record. Plus 7 or 8 covers. I’m a guitarist by training but also have a couple of MIDI keyboards too. I’ve got a Focusrite interface and powered monitors too.
So knowing my background which would you recommend? I’ve also got a free download of Ableton Lite and MPC beats as well as Reaper on my laptop but found Reaper unappealing. Some internet research brought me to cakewalk and this sub. I’d appreciate anyone’s suggestions in this area.

2024.05.21 21:02 crokey80 [Thank you] for the mass of cards (Round 1)

I'm so sorry for the delay in sending the thanks for the amazing cards that I have been sent. Life got a bit crazy. However, it has meant that my hubby is happy as I am finally using the new tablet with a keyboard that he got me for Christmas. This would take way too long on a phone. Also these are in no paricular order, I put them in a pile to do thanks - I know that some thanks are much more overdue than others.
u/TheCaledonainRose Thank you for the super cute colourful kitty card with cat stickers. I wish i could manage to get my cats to sit and look that pretty without running around and trying to kill each other.
u/Monetmonkey x 3 for the beautiful floral postcards. Plus paper and ideas to inspire - defintely need to take my book to a park when the weather picks up. Stargazer lillies are my favourite flowers too, I just have to be super careful with the kitties. Luckily so far so good! Thank you for your generousity!
u/t3ctim x 2 Thank you for the coloured and the to colour postcards. The coloured one actually arrived today. The coloured one is super pretty and I can't believe you did it in London then had to take it all the way home with you to send it. Hope that your travels went well.
u/Jennnnnnnnifer Thank you for the coctail essential postcard - I wish I had all of the ingredients it shows to make a good cocktail now. Hope your teams hockey season is going well. I went to my first hockey (presume we are speaking ice) last year in Sweden. I finally found a sport my husband liked!
u/xoxounityoxox Thank you for the anniversary card. Our 7th Wedding anninversary is on the 27th and i finally got round to getting my present for my husband today. The stickers are also super cute!
u/eriszt for the lovley postbard from the Porche museum. It sounds like you had an amazing honeymoon, and i am rather jealous! I am rubbish and so many of the places you visited are so close to home (a few hours on a plane), I must do more travelling. I hope you enjoyed the performance of Swan Lake

2024.05.21 20:37 argenkiwi Kenkyo: my take on keyboard layers using software

I thought I'll share my little project here before I lose my enthusiasm over it. 😅
It's just a repo with configuration files for some keyboard customization software (Keyd, Kanata and a bit of Karabiner+Goku so far) that represent the layered keyboard layout I have been playing with and tweaking for the last month.
I am hoping that, once I master it, transitioning to a 40% keyboard will be relatively painless. As a Colemak user, I tried to preserve as much of the motor memory I had from using a standard ANSI layout, particularly when putting the Fumbol (Function/NumbeSymbol) layer together. The spacebar is key (pun intended) in this design because if you pin a layer to it you can still move the rest of your fingers relatively easily which is important for ergonomics.
Thanks for your feedback and I hope it serves for inspiration to some of you.

2024.05.21 18:48 Juzabro Forge of Darkness Chapter 6 summary

Part Two: The Solitude of This Fire
Chapter 6
Location: Hust Forge. Hust Henarald's conference room
POV: Kellaras
After making Kellaras wait some days, Hust Henarald finally grants him an audience and says "One day, I will be a child again". These words seem to be nonsense to Kellaras. While waiting for his audience he noticed the Hust Forge never stops working. Henarald goes on to say we all war with two parts of ourselves and both make weapons from anything at hand. Henarald asks Kellaras if Anomander simply wants a sword or to join the Hust Legion. He doesn't think Urusander's Legion would like that very much. Kellaras says he knows the request of a sword is unusual at this time. Henarald responds by saying others will see it as political. Perhaps even a secret allegiance. Kellaras is put off balance by Henarald's pragmatic responses and then shifting into ending each with "One day I will be a child again." Henarald asks for specs and Kellaras says Anomander wants the sword to be silent. Henarald responds by asking if he would prefer a gagged weapon and if Anomander will hide it's origin. Kellaras tells Henarald that Anomander wants his swords spine to be quenched in the purity of Darkness itself. Henarald muses on power and says those with the most power have the greatest fear and that means power is meaningless and delusional. Kellaras counters that the Forulkan would have enslaved the Tiste with their power had they won, but they lost to the power of the Tiste. Henarald responds, "A triumph in solitude makes a hollow sound, and to every glory proclaimed the heavens make no answer".
Kellaras reiterates that his master requests a sword. Henarald responds "To take the blood of Darkness". Kellaras is surprised by this as Mother Dark is not Azathanai. Henarald asks how she feeds her power and if now that Anomander knows the secret of House Hust if he will use it for political gain. Kellaras says his Lord is the ultimate secret keeper. Henarald agrees to forge Anomander's sword, but requires that he be present at the quenching of it by darkness to witness if it is blood Mother Dark uses. Kellaras tells him he won't be able to see anything and leaves the chamber trembling mostly upset by Henarald's repeated assertions that he will return to childhood.
Kellaras goes to the main hall where there is feast taking place. He pushes aside his doubts and is proud that he got Henarald's agreement to make the sword. He searches out Galar Baras and finds him leaning against a pillar staring at a woman that had just entered. Kellaras sees her see Galar Baras and watches her stiffen. The woman is Toras Redone. Kellaras notes that even grimed from hard travel she is beautiful and makes his way to Galar. Galar asks if Henarald spoke to Kellaras of childhood. Kellaras says yes, but does not understand. Kellaras invites Galar to join a table and Galar accepts though he tells him he can't drink. Galar tells the captain that the childhood thing troubles them all. Kellaras asks him to call him by his name and not rank. Galar says that Henarald claims that he is losing his recent memories, but no one can see any evidence of this. Galar tells Kellaras of a sickness called Loss of Iron that afflicts smiths. Kellaras tells Galar that in his meeting Henarald was sharp and focused. No evidence of a crumbling mind. Galar asks if he will tell Anomander of this. Galar says it has no bearing on the creation of the sword and says his master would likely just say returning to childhood isn't a bad idea.
POV: Galar Baras
Kellaras gets drunk and stumbles off and now Galar has to be alone with his thoughts and heartache at the presence of Toras Redone. She was still holding court at one of the tables and after a while she shuffles over to him. She comments on her husband transferring as far away as he could. She tells Galar that he is a pariah in the citadel. That people think him arrogant and dismissive. She knows that's not him, so is puzzled. She says he should have sex with the priestesses. That celibacy is not for soldiers. He should feed his appetites. Galar responds by asking if she is well fed. The barb slides off of her and she says well enough. She says she is certain that her husband stays true to her and that leads her to infidelity. Galar does not understand this. She changes the subject and says she has missed him. She tells him to go to bed, but he knows he won't be alone for long. He compares himself to Toras Redone's husband, Calat Hustain, knowing that both spend their nights alone, "because it was in their nature to choose it: to remain alone in the absence of love"
Location: Neret Sorr
POV: Kadaspala
With Osserc and Hunn Raal gone, Kadaspala is having a more enjoyable time having dinners with Urusander. The painting however was still irritating to him. He doubts anyone will see below the surface of his painting. He is finished and will leave in the morning. "There is but one god, and its name is beauty. There is but one kind of worship, and that is love. There is for us but one world, and we have scarred it beyond recognition". Kadaspala now truly sees Urusander and is terrified. Urusander asks him why he chose to accept this request. Kadaspala says he's denied hundreds, but if anyone can prevent a civil war, it's the man in the portrait. Although his thoughts imply that that may not be the same man standing before him.
Location: House Enes lands
POV: Cryl Durav
On his short self-imposed exile from the wedding preparations, Kryl finds the antlers of a long dead Eckalla. A symbol of triumph. Cryl thinks the triumph is hollow. Hunting for food was once a necessity, but that necessity bred traditions that resulted in the extinction of this animal. Thinking back on his youth he dreamt of discovering a new world free of Tiste where he could become prey and know the thrill of fear. Enesdia was also present in these fantasies. He thinks, "He had been trained for war just as he had been taught how to hunt and how to slay, and these were deemed necessary skills in preparation for adulthood. How sad was that?".
His horse notices some movement and he sees a troop of Tiste riders approaching. This makes no sense as there is no reason for them to come here on there way to somewhere else. Cryl rides to meet them and sees that they lead a score of Jheleck children. There were no chains. The captain of the company asks why Cryl is out this far and Cryl tells him who he is. The captain breaks in and says Cryl is probably fleeing the frenzy of the coming marriage. The captain introduces himself as Scara Bandaris and says there are two reasons for him being here, one trying to figure out what to do with the Jheleck hostages and two to attend the wedding. Cryl agrees to escort them all to house Enes. Scara perceptively guesses that Cryl is out here because he is in love with Enesdia. He says he will say no more on the subject.
There are 25 Jheleck children. Scara says they will raise wolves in these children. Cryl says he's heard they are more like hounds. Scara says hostage taking may come back to bite them. Scara laughs at his own joke and forces a smile onto Cryl's face. Cryl feels a little better.
Location: House Enes
POV: Enesdia
Enesdia is upset that Cryl has been gone for a few days. She searches out her father and overdramatically asks him why they are shirking their responsibility to their hostage. She says, "For all you know he could be lying at the bottom of a well, legs shattered and dying of thirst" Jaen responds "Dying of thirst in a well?" he tells her he sent him on a search for Eckalla. She says that's a hopeless quest. Jaen says Cryl's familiar with those. Enesdia asks what he means. Jaen responds that his time with House Enes is ending. It has only now struck Enesdia that her companion will not be at her side much longer. Enesdia laments the fact that Cryl's family has only one occupation. He will be a soldier like his only living brother, Spinnock. She muses that she could ask Andarist to offer Cryl a commission in the citadel, far away from fighting. Cryl would never know, but he would be safe.
Location: House Drukorlas
POV: Orfantal
Orfantal is standing near the estate road with Wreneck, a stable boy that used to be his friend. They are also standing near an old nag horse. They have been standing for some time. They are being circled by 3 feral dogs that have smelled the food that Orfantal carries. Orfantal wished he knew why Wreneck stopped being his friend, but it seemed impossible to ask now. Orfantal has all of his possessions in a trunk. They are not much. Orfantal thinks he could fit in there too, ready to be discarded. Wreneck is 10, Orfantal is 5. His grandmother is sending him off somewhere to learn how to grow up. He knows there will be a time when unhappiness comes into his life as it does with every boy. A wagon pulls up. It will be his ride to wherever he is going. Wreneck makes sure they know that he is going to the citadel and that he is nobleborn. Wreneck tells Orfantal that the old horse is blind in her left eye, so don't let anything ride on that side of her. Orfantal says goodbye to Wreneck and Wreneck waves dismissively and leaves.
POV: Wreneck
Wreneck turns from some distance to watch them leave with tears running down his face. He resolves himself to return to the "evil hag" and now he doesn't even have Orfantal to make his life easier. Nerys Drukorlat had forbidden him from playing or even speaking to Orfantal. She would fire him if he did. His mother and father and sisters relied on his income. He wished he could have played with Orfantal this entire morning and hugged him goodbye, but he was afraid of the evil hag.
Location: Toras Keep. On the road to the Citadel
POV: Orfantal
The party makes camp and the scarred old man who loaded Orfantal's trunk says that this is likely his horse's last journey. Orfantal is sad to not even know the horses name and wonders what things she has seen in her life. He decided that she had been a warhorse and saved her rider many times, but not from the betrayal that finally killed him. The leader of the troop introduces himself to Orfantal as Haral and tells him not to call him sir. He tells him he guards merchants and that's all. Orfantal asks about bandits. Haral says there are some Deniers. Haral tells Orfantal that he will be sharing Gripp's tent. The man who took care of his horse. He says that Gripp can be trusted and not some of the other men in the party.
Haral says after this he will be joining House Dracon's houseblades. Orfantal asks if he was a soldier once. Haral says few weren't in his generation. Orfantal introduces himself. Haral asks why she named him that. His name is a Yedan dialect. The holy language of the monks, Shake. Narad, one of the guards, says it means unwanted and laughs. Haral tells him to keep his mouth shut on this journey and tells Orfantal his name doesn't mean unwanted, it means unexpected. Narad laughs again and Haral savagely kicks him in the face then punches him. He then walks away from the unconscious guard. Orfantal is trembling and his heart is beating fast. Gripp comes over and calms him down. He says it's discipline and Narad was pushing for weeks. Orfantal now has a face to put to all the faceless betrayers in his war games. Narad. Gripp shows Orfantal how to raise a tent.
Location: Within sight of Dracon's Hold
POV: Ivis
Ivis and Sandalath are riding towards the hold. Ivis tells her that Draconus will be gone for several weeks still. Her body tells him that she probably had a child, but that's none of his business. She is now a hostage at House Dracon's and she will be treated well. Sandalath asks where Draconus comes from. Ivis says even his servants do not know, but he proved his worth in the war. Ivis is upset at the discipline now presented by his houseblades and resolves to fix it. Sandalath is being led to a warm bath and thanks Ivis. He responds, "My pleasure, milady". Hilith the head of the house maids does not like him calling her a lady as she is only hostage now. She lets him know it. Ivis says, "Old woman, you are no queen to so command me. I will choose the honorific our guest deserves. She rode well and without complaint. If you have complaint, await the pleasure of our lord upon his return. In the meantime, spit out that sour grape you so love to suck on, and be dutiful." Hilith says this isn't over. Ivis responds with a command to leave his courtyard and if he hears of her being miserable to the hostage that it will in fact not be over.
Location: Dracon's Hold
POV: Sandalath
Hilith tells Sandalath to come with her to the bath. Sandalath asks if the water is hot. and asks her if there is wood ready just in case. Sandalath challenges Hilith and says she is to treat her as if she was the lady of the house. Hilith bristles but agrees. Sandalath remembers her first stint as a hostage and the horrible hag that made her life miserable until Andarist found out and got rid of her. If Hilith turns out to be the same, she will tell Draconus. A younger maid escorts her to the correct bath, not the one Hilith had prepared for her. Sandalath says if Hilith is her enemy, then Sandalath should have many allies. The maid smiles and says thousands. Sandalath asks the maid about Ivis and if she finds him handsome. She says he is old, but Sandalath doesn't think so. Sandalath tells the maid she feels welcomed by this house and feels born anew.

2024.05.21 18:37 Aorus_ Designing A Product Using A Component we don't Control

I am considering having a mold made of a product we already sell. The product uses a bluetooth keyboard we source off of alibaba. We currently 3d print an adapter that we mount to the keyboard. This works reliably but it'd be nice to simplify our sourcing by having everything handled overseas. We'd be looking to replace our printed parts with parts we have molded.
A problem I see with this is this gives the keyboard manufacturer significant leverage over us. If the keyboard manufacturer was made aware that we invested in a mold on their specific keyboard they could realistically charge us whatever they wanted and unless we wanted to invest in a new mold we'd probably pay whatever they wanted. To an extent at least. Or alternatively they may just change their design without notifying us. They've done this before and, since we 3d printed parts, it was not a big deal, but if we invested in a mold that'd be a larger setback.
For this reason I'm leaning towards 3d printing these or trying to find a way to still 3d print these but perhaps outsourcing the assembly work. We don't do a huge volume of sales to where we need the scaling of injection molding. But it would be nice to not have to pay american wages to have these assembled.
What are people's thoughts on this ? Both on outsourcing a product while not fully controlling the product's ecosystem as well as the idea of trying to only outsource the assembly of a 3d printed product.
Thank you

2024.05.21 17:38 Burkedge Need Advice/Encouragement/Words of Wisdom

37M - 6'2 (heed this warning: its definitely harder to lose weight as you age) - Been on a caloric deficit, mixing concepts of keto, intermittent fasting, and straight up wateblack coffee fasting, since January 1st. From Sunday night to Tuesday morning, every week this year I've done a 36-hour wateblack coffee fast.
Down from 193.4 to 159.2 (I've always identified as a skinny guy) with a goal of 157.0 (my wedding weight). The past few weeks, with my goal in sight I've been extending my fast from Sunday night to Wednesday mornings for a 60-hour fast.
I'm at the 36-hour mark... within spitting distance of my goal and the wheels are coming off; mentally I feel like I'm shitting my pants at mile marker 25 while running a marathon.
I know what I'm doing isn't healthy... but I've come this far. If I weigh in between 157 and 158 tomorrow should I fast until Thursday in hopes of symbolically crossing the finish line?
I'm not going back to my old eating habits - I just don't want to do this anymore. Being so incredibly restrictive.
I'm steadfast in achieving victory; should I willpower my way through the next couple days for possible symbolic victory or probably continue my journey for the next few weeks to where my weight will seesaw until settling in the 157 range?

Platform(s):
I'm only aware of the PC version
Genre:
Platformer
Estimated year of release:
90's ~ Pre-2003
Graphics/art style:
It was made around the time where instead of hand-drawn sprites, the sprites would be renders from 3D modeling programs of the time. Think of something like Sonic 3D Blast level of 3D.
There is no actual 3D in the game, it's all just 3D rendered sprites.
Notable characters:
The two protagonists who are just computer chips (CPU's?) whom I assume are brothers. One with red boxing gloves and blue boxing gloves.
Notable gameplay mechanics:
It's a basic platformer where you fight enemies and win the stage. Where some platforming contains puzzles(see image example?)
You can play with two players on a shared keyboard.
Other details:
It had an installation CD for the PC version and it's own cover.
I also remember being visibly confused when I saw playstation symbols on one of the puzzles and you'd have to punch a certain sequence to move the platform up, so there's a possibility for it being a Ps1 game but I never saw it.
I remember specifically being around 4-6 years old playing it, so details are really blurry!
EDIT: I'm a dope, it's 1:1 resolution! CRTs were big at the time.

2024.05.21 16:28 jpgerb Keyboarding for math symbols

Does anyone have a good resource for easy ways (in windows) to type out the different calc symbols? Like epsilon, delta, alpha, beta, etc. I can dig some out in the character map but I can’t find most of them. Or if there’s a keyboard “extension” out there that has those buttons that you can usb in to your computer in addition to your regular keyboard, that would be cool too.

2024.05.21 15:58 BigTex-1836 What are the best ways to make and use marginalia in nonfiction Kindle books?

I posted this in the Kindle sub and received no response, so I'm thinking maybe my question is more relevant here.
I'm an avid reader of nonfiction books that I use for research, teaching, personal development, and leading an organization. I've had every generation of Kindle since the very first one (currently own both a Paperwhite and a Scribe). There is absolutely nothing as convenient as a Kindle when it comes to the convenience of reading. However, I struggle to replicate my system of marginalia and therefore struggle with how to best use Kindle for nonfiction even after all these years of use. This results in a love/hate relationship, as well as numerous attempts to start a book in Kindle only to wind up buying the physical copy a day or two later.
Let me give an example. In a physical book, I typically follow the author's structure by using a pen to put brackets around a sentence like, "Here are three outcomes...." And then I circle the words, "First," "Second," "Third," in the following paragraphs. This allows me to easily flip back later and see structure or the flow of a concept or argument. If the structure follows numerous section headings over multiple pages, I will simply write numbers (1, 2, 3, etc.) next to the section heading so that I can easily see the structure when flipping through the book later. I also like use other symbols such as a star or exclamation points in the margin, and sometimes I draw a line down the page next to a paragraph in order to indicate the whole paragraph is important without underlining every sentence, which allows me to then save underlining for the most important sentences that I want to stick out.
After all these years, I've struggled to really replicate this in a Kindle book. I thought maybe the Scribe would fix this issue, but it provides very little real world value to me in terms of annotation and note taking. It is just as easy to make a note on the keyboard. The Kindle app allows for change of color in highlights as well as for putting a star next to certain highlights (a feature that STILL doesn't exist on the Kindle devices after all these years!). I also am familiar with using Readwise and making heading notes (.h1, .h2, etc.). That is useful to an extent, but still not great.
Maybe I'm asking to much of an ereadeebook. However, I'm also sure it could just be me. I know there are many people here who read lots of nonfiction and likely made a transition at some point from physical books to ereaders and had to adapt in the same way. I value your experience and would appreciate any advice you could give, or insight into your own system for marginalia. Thanks in advance!

2024.05.21 15:39 TheLostMaverick Building a PC for my wife who has had her gaming awakening! - Help greatly appreciated! [UK][MicroATX][~£1k]

Hello all, as it says in the title I'm looking to build my wife a PC. She has recently opened her eyes to the wonders of PC gaming. She's always been a console player (Was terrified of mouse and keyboard) but after playing Hogwarts Legacy on PS4 she thought she would like to try Baldurs Gate 3 which I had on PC. Safe to say she enjoyed that and now has a backlog of games she wants to play which is longer than my arm. This is great but we only have one PC and no laptop which means that if she's on my PC I can't use it and vice versa. This, in her own words, has become; "An untenable situation.". We don't own a laptop and we're not too keen on going down that particular route.
Onto the topic of the build! We know we would like the build to be a MicroATX as the space that the PC will be going isn't really suitable for a Mid or Full tower. We'd like the PC to be able to comfortably run games like Hogwarts Legacy, BG3 but also have a some scope to play upcoming games at 1080p. Not as interested in building a fully futureproof 1440p beast that will break the bank.
It's been a while since the height of my PC building era and having come back into it, in a formfactor I'm not used to, after a several year hiatus, I feel overwhelmed. I've tried wading through the quagmire of forums, reviews, tech YouTube channels and opinions and I've arguable come out in worse shape than I went in with. So with all that being said, I'd really appreciate if those of you who were willing and able would cast your savvy peepers on the below list and give it some constructive criticism. Feel free to ask any questions!
I'm trying to keep the build in the ~£1,000 range, ideally below as we do have some peripherals to buy.
TL:DR: I need help building a MicroATX PC, I've got the draft list below and would appreciate constructive criticism. I have an old PSU but don't know if it's of any use for this build:
PCPartPicker Part List: https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/HKrmTY
CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600X 3.7 GHz 6-Core Processor (Stock Cooler) (£121.32 @ NeoComputers)

Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3600 CL18 Memory (£38.99 @ Amazon UK)
Storage: Crucial P3 Plus 1 TB M.2-2280 PCIe 4.0 X4 NVME Solid State Drive (£69.99 @ Ebuyer)
Video Card: Asus DUAL OC Radeon RX 7600 XT 16 GB Video Card (£333.53 @ NeoComputers)
Case: Cooler Master Q300L V2 MicroATX Mini Tower Case (£53.97 @ Amazon UK)
PSU: TBC (I have an old Corsair RM650W Fully Modular 80+ Gold, from 2015, too old to reuse?)
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 11 Home OEM - DVD 64-bit (£108.98 @ Overclockers.co.uk)
Total: £831.77

2024.05.21 13:34 Kidlike101 I dreamt a full story, with an arc and everything

2024.05.21 13:20 JokingReaper How can I assign a combination of keys to generate a specific symbol (on windows)?

[SOLVED - SEE THE SOLUTION BELOW]
Hello! I've been trying to find this specific answer everywhere else, but I can never get the precise result that I want.
So, I need to enter the symbols "<" and ">" from my keyboard. I'm using a spanish-keymap (I need it since I write in spanish most of the time) which sacrifices those symbols for a couple of others, and I know I can use the ascii assignation of "Alt+60" and "Alt+62" respectively to enter them, but this is quite a hassle.
What I would like is to use a combination of specific keys to enter these symbols. To be specific, if I press "Alt+," I want to get "<", and if I press "Alt+." I want to get ">". These particular combinations aren't assigned to anything specific, so it would be ideal.
How can I get this working? I've looked everywhere but all I get are reassignments of single-keys that sacrifice the normal use of that specific key (which I don't want).
If I have to use programming or some batch configuration I have no problems, since I'm used to do it. So don't be afraid of getting a bit technical (I'm not an expert but I'm not ignorant either).
[SOLVED]
I found a solution that worked perfectly, and I think it's worth mentioning in full since it will work for basically any layout that you want to create, or modify:
  1. You need to have .NET framework 3.5 installed (this is necessary since the actual program you need is quite old and requires this framework to work). Download it from here:
https://www.microsoft.com/en-US/download/details.aspx?id=21
2) Install the software called "Microsoft Keyboard Layout Creator" (MKLC) which can be downloaded from here:
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=102134&irgwc=1
3) Run the program MKLC and you'll be greeted by an image of an empty keyboard.
4) Go to 'File>Load existing keyboard' and select the language that you are most used to (English-US for example). This will load and display the preconfigured keyboard layout for the selected language
4.1) Go to File>Save source file as... and save the original layout in case you want to load it again.
5) on the left side of the MKLC window there are options for displaying the effects of pressing: "Caps Lock" "Shift" "Alt+Ctrl" or (Alt-Gr / Right hand side Alt)"; "Ctrl" Play with those options to see what combination of buttons are unassigned.
6) Once you have decided what combination is suitable for you, left click on the 'empty' key that you want, and assign the symbol you find suitable (you can also modify an already occupied key, but that would change or even eliminate the effects from that key, so be careful). Also, try to avoid combinations that already have an effect, for example Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V, since some of those aren't explicitly shown in this layout.
Now, if this is all you need, then go to the next section (step 10) to compile and install the keyboard. However, there is a last thing that could be useful: Deadkeys.
A deadkey is a key that has a 'modification' over the effect of other keys. This is useful if you need characters that have accents (like in french, spanish, german, esperanto, etc: ì í ä ñ ŭ ĉ). Here I'll give an explanation to set, configure and modify the effects of deadkeys:
7) Set a symbol for a deadkey (for example the accent ~ for the spanish letter ñ).
8) Right click on the selected symbol, and select "Set as deadkey". This will open a window with a table with four columns, called: Base (Code Point) Composite (Code Point) Base Composite
On the first two columns you can write a single character, and it will automatically transform into a Unicode Code, and display the respective character on the column to the right with the same word (you cannot modify the columns to the right directly).
The logic behind this table is that if you press the deadkey first and then you follow it by pressing the key with the "base" symbol, then it will then be transformed into the character in the "Composite" symbol.
Finally, as a convention, the last entry of the table is usually the "empty space" given by hitting the space bar: ( ) in the "Base" and in the "Composite" is the very symbol that you used for the deadkey. So, as an example, here is how the table should be looking at the end:
If the 'symbol' for the deadkey is this one: "~", then the table should look something like this:
Base (Code Point) Composite (Code Point) Base Composite
U+006e U+00f1 n ñ
U+0061 U+00e3 a ã
U+006f U+00f5 o õ
U+0020 U+007e ~
Things to remember:
  • The columns you modify are the first two to the left.
  • HOWEVER you don't enter the 'unicode code'. You enter the single character associated to it, so if you enter the letter "n" on the "Base (Code Point)" cell, it will be transformed into "U+006e" automatically, and the symbol "n" will be displayed on the "Base" column to the right. Similarly, you have to enter the symbol "ñ" in the "Composite (Code Point)" cell, and it will be transformed into "U+00f1", and the symbol displayed in the column "Composite" to the right.
  • The table will always generate an "empty" row at the bottom if you want to add more entries to the list.
  • If you leave a row empty, the program will simply eliminate that row as an error after you press the "OK" button at the bottom right of the window.
Once you have all modifications to your liking, press the "OK" button to the bottom right.
If you need to modify the table of symbols associated with a deadkey, right click the deadkey, and select "Dead Key dialog", and it will open the table again.
10) Go to Project>Properties and modify the name (8 characters max), description, and specific "Language" Keyboard associated with this layout
11) Go to File>Save Source File As... and save your new layout somewhere.
12) Compile this new keyboard by going to Project>Build DLL and setup package
13) open the folder with the compiled files, and run the "exe" file
14) if necessary restart the machine
15) Select your new keyboard from the entry options, and you're done

Lab Grown Diamond Wedding Bands: Sustainable Sparkle for Your Love Story
Lab grown wedding band
In a world increasingly focused on conscious choices, couples seeking the perfect symbol of their love are turning to lab-grown diamonds. These dazzling gemstones offer the same brilliance and fire as their mined counterparts, but with a key difference: sustainability.
A Commitment to Forever, and the Planet
For centuries, diamonds have been a cherished symbol of everlasting love. However, the environmental and ethical concerns surrounding traditional diamond mining have cast a shadow on their sparkle. Lab-grown diamonds offer a solution, allowing you to celebrate your love story with a clear conscience.
https://preview.redd.it/r80o4wm9hr1d1.png?width=1200&format=png&auto=webp&s=474c94c39cf029f94fc20b5cef5e169972482d35
Created with Innovation
Lab-grown diamonds are not imitations. They are real diamonds, physically and chemically identical to mined diamonds. The difference lies in their origin. Scientists have meticulously replicated the natural diamond formation process in a controlled laboratory setting. This allows for the creation of stunning diamonds in a fraction of the time it takes for them to form underground.
Sustainable Sparkle
Traditional diamond mining can have a significant impact on the environment. It can involve large-scale land disturbance, water pollution, and significant energy consumption. Lab-grown diamonds, on the other hand, have a much smaller environmental footprint. They are produced in controlled settings with minimal waste and significantly less energy usage.

The Ethical Choice
Mined diamonds can be linked to human rights violations and conflict zones. Lab-grown diamonds offer complete peace of mind. You can be confident that your wedding bands were created with ethical practices and respect for human rights.
Beyond the Diamond: Sustainable Wedding Bands
While lab-grown diamonds are a stunning choice, your commitment to sustainability can extend further. Consider these options:
  • Recycled Metals: Opt for bands crafted from recycled gold, platinum, or palladium to minimise environmental impact.
  • Moissanite: This gemstone boasts exceptional brilliance and fire at a more affordable price point, making it a popular eco-conscious choice.
  • Alternative Gemstones: Explore ethically sourced sapphires, emeralds, or opals for a unique and colourful touch.

A Symbol of Love and Responsibility
Your wedding bands are a constant reminder of your love story and the promises you make to each other. Choosing lab-grown diamonds allows you to express your love while reflecting your values. With their dazzling beauty and sustainable origins, lab-grown diamonds are the perfect choice for the modern, eco-conscious couple embarking on their forever journey together. They are a symbol of love, commitment, and responsibility – a reflection of the brilliance of your love story and the future you're building together.

2024.05.21 11:35 Virtual_Ad4681 First Time Flying with a Keyboard – What Are My Options for Transporting It?

I have a flight on June 11th from Cebu to Caticlan (Philippines) for a wedding gig, and I need to bring my keyboard with me. This is my first time flying with an instrument, and I didn't anticipate the specific requirements for transporting it. My ticket allows for free cabin baggage up to 7kg, with dimensions not exceeding 56x36x23 cm. However, my keyboard measures 95x34x22 cm.
I'm looking for advice on what my options are besides paying extra for the baggage. Has anyone experienced a similar situation, or does anyone have tips on how to manage this? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Next week, I'll be traveling from Cebu to Caticlan for a wedding gig, sa flight ticket ko nakalagay, Cabin Baggage: Free (7kg) Each piece cannot exceed 56x36x23, kaso yung dimension ng keys ko and case is 95x34x22 so hindi siya pwede i cabin.
