2024.05.21 18:14 gizzlyxbear Blue Steel (1990) and the “phallic woman”

Let me preface this by saying that I’ve never watched a Kathryn Bigelow movie before this. That said, I’ve seen enough of the discourse about this movie online to know that it’s considered a black mark in her career. I can say with assurance, as a Bigelow newcomer, that this movie rips. At some point before making super nationalist movies, it looks like Bigelow was creating feminist, Marxist films, I guess?
Blue Steel is hiding a lot of commentary on working class and gender struggles underneath all its late ‘80s/early ‘90s New York grit and grime. I’d go so far as to argue that the movie is a little too on the nose at times in its imagery and storytelling. Nonetheless, it’s a surprisingly biting piece of film.
The idea of a gun as a phallic symbol in cinema is nothing new. The earliest example I can think of is 1950’s Gun Crazy, in which a pair of ill-fated lovers consummate their on-screen love through brute firepower. As a phallic symbol, guns draw upon ideas of violence, power, and patriarchy in their imagery. In making Jamie Lee Curtis’ Megan Turner a powerful woman with a gun, she becomes a “phallic woman”, possessing male power in a patriarchal society. This is made even clearer when, early in the film, she becomes a detective; quite literally a “female dick”. This fetishization of firearms is furthered with the opening close-up shots of Megan’s pistol. The way the camera tracks along the hard edges and grooves of the gun as if it were a close-up of a woman’s body in any other film is telling. Paired with Megan donning her policeman’s uniform, it becomes a sort of male drag. There’s a sense of anxiety that comes with the “phallic woman” trope. This is usually mitigated by the camera: showing these women as either villains—attacking and rejecting them—or making them sex symbols. To get around from this mitigation, the film shows a scene early on in which Megan reveals she’s a cop to a potential suitor. As he finds out that she is a woman in power and, more importantly, is carrying a gun, he quickly becomes disinterested—disgusted even.
Alternatively, in Ron Silver’s character, Eugene, the gun becomes symbolic of lost power; lost masculinity. From a Marxist perspective, Eugene has lost his essence by working within wealth and finance. He is corrupt in comparison to the “common working man”. When he first acquires a gun, he sees it as a form of liberation for himself. Eugene is aware of his financial power; as much is shown during his first interactions with Megan. Through the lens of the phallic gun, though, the film shows his yearning for physical power, something otherwise unreachable for him. This comes to a head during one scene where he’s shown scrambling, looking desperately for his misplaced weapon—true panic on his otherwise composed face.
On another level, the film works by taking the narrative structures of both the slasher and rape-revenge horror subgenres and placing them within a crime-thriller context. Eugene becomes a sort of boogeyman, not unlike Michael Myers; killing victims one by one. Also like Myers, Eugene just keeps coming back, a near-unstoppable force. In this way, the casting of Jamie Lee Curtis is brilliant. Some subversion and further gender commentary also takes place here, by having Megan present as a much more androgynous “final girl” type of character. There’s a brief example of that androgyny in a scene where Megan walks home from her police academy graduation and is nearly mistaken as a male officer by two women.
Moving on from the thematics and the characters, the cinematography of Blue Steel borders on pornographic—a comment I’ve also made towards Infinity Pool, a body horror piece. The photography is slick and well-lit (save for one arguably underlit scene in the police precinct), bordering on Michael Mann lighting at times. There’s a lot of very up-close shots as well, but even when it isn’t getting up close and personal, the way most of the movie is framed is very intimate.
Where the movie loses me somewhat is on the strength of its writing—or lack thereof. While I think it’s very well-acted from everyone involved, I think they could only do the best they could with the material given. It’s not overly cliched, but it just comes off as weak and not punchy enough.
The Vestron Video blu-ray transfer is gorgeous. As with their Earth Girls Are Easy transfer, the colors absolutely pop off the screen. There’s also some very healthy, very welcome film grain present throughout, adding to the griminess of the experience.
For genre film fans, this is a very easy recommendation. Anyone looking for highbrow, though, can look elsewhere.

2024.05.21 03:44 CrimsonRanger21 Is it possible to be assigned one type and

I took the Myer Briggs test almost a year ago I think and was given the mediator, but I recently saw in the community a meme about all the testes and Michael calos test caught my eye along with these: fi se ne te stuff. I took the test and got the INFJ type and weirdly this type resonant with me to the T for the most part. My question is that is it possible to be a infp and closely match with a another type? Should I get retested just in case I may be a wrong type?

2024.05.21 03:02 x2rare Constant Lucid Dream Ruined

I tend to lucid dream a lot without any real effort. However, I have a constant thought within my dreams that always ruins it. That would be Michael Myers. Idk what it is but he always comes to my mind and the dream turns into that no matter what i do. No matter what setting i’m in it’ll turn out where i have to run away or fight him. I don’t feel fear because I know it’s not real but it takes up most of my thinking capabilities within the dream. I just wanted to know if this sort of thing happens to you guys and if so what helped you stop the dream from shaping around this thought.

2024.05.21 00:45 mattiescorsese Watching Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein for the first time.

I just wanna say that the idea of this movie is genius. People now-a-days always talk about horror cross-overs, (chucky x m3gan come to mind) but what if they did more stuff like this. Borat meets Freddy, Ricky Stanicky meets Ghostface, or even action cross-overs
John Wick vs Michael Myers anyone? lol maybe I’m talking nutty, but I think it would be a breath of fresh air if done right.

2024.05.21 00:12 MidwestWizard86 Would you rather spend the night on board the Antonia Graza in 2002 or Michael Myers’ house in 1978?

Between the haunted, derelict ocean liner Antonia Graza (Ghost Ship, 2002), or the dilapidated childhood home of Michael Myers (Halloween, 1978), which would you rather be forced to spend the night at? Both are dark, spooky, and haunted, and pose their own fears and dangers
Edit: I should have mentioned a few rules. If you choose the Myers home, you can go anywhere in the house, but you must sleep in Judy’s bedroom. If you leave the house or sleep in any other room, you die.
If you choose the Graza, again you can go anywhere, and can sleep anywhere
except for Katie’s cabin. If you go to sleep there, jump overboard, or try to take the gold, you die.
So, what’ll it be? Sea Evil or the Shape of Haddonfield?

2024.05.20 22:34 wjZephyr The Shape - Reworked

The Shape - Reworked
Yes, I know, Myers reworks are probably done to death on this sub. Regardless, after conversations with friends, I'm pretty proud of this one I've come up with. Michael Myers is a horror icon, and he has unfortunately been left behind in terms of the game's design. To remedy that, here is how I would rework The Shape.
https://preview.redd.it/7u4q1zw7tm1d1.jpg?width=307&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=48d962c8286da9e5a8d2e51c3463de93ec3aeaee
”I spent eight years trying to reach him, and then another seven trying to keep him locked up because I realized that what was living behind that boy's eyes was purely and simply... evil.” - Dr. Sam Loomis

Some Pre-Requisites:

Distance should no longer affect how much evil you gain from stalking. It should be a flat number, no matter how close or far away you are, akin to Ghostface.
Reduce Myers' height to average. Right now, he is a tall killer. While not the most necessary, I believe him being somewhat shorter would both be more accurate to the films while also making it easier to stealth. Boy is nearly seven feet tall right now, get his ass out of the fog and onto the basketball court.

Evil Within

The Shape starts the match in Tier I. In this mode, he is undetectable, has a speed of 110%, and has a reduced lunge range. The Shape can stalk survivors to gain evil points, which fills up his Evil Within Gauge. It takes roughly 15 Seconds of stalking to fill the gauge. While stalking, his speed is reduced. Once the gauge is completely filled, The Shape will enter Tier II.
Once entered, Tier II will inflict all survivors with the exposed status effect. While in Tier II, The Shape’s movement speed is increased to 115%, his terror radius is increased to 40m, his lunge range increases considerably, and his vault speed is reduced to 1.3 seconds. Pallet stun will be reduced by 35% (cannot be increased by perks.) Tier II lasts 30 seconds, after which it will revert back to Tier I and require the Evil Within Gauge to be refilled. Whenever a survivor is downed, Tier II’s duration is reduced by 5 seconds.

Reworked Add-Ons:

Blonde HaiHair Brush/Hair Bow/Lock of Hair: Increase duration of Tier II by 2/5/10/12 seconds. Increases the threshold to reach Tier II by 110%/115%/125%/130%. Effects stack if two are used together, including threshold percentage.
Scratched Mirror: Locks you to Tier I. Stalking reveals the auras of all survivors in a 32m radius.
Vanity Mirror: Locks you to Tier I. While in a chase, your movement speed is increased to 115% and your lunge is increased to the normal range.
Tombstone Piece: While in Tier II, you gain the ability to walk through breakable walls, reducing your movement speed by 10% for 3 seconds. Increases your action speed while breaking pallets/kicking generators by 15%.
Judith Myers Tombstone: While in Tier II, if a pallet is dropped on you, it is destroyed. Your pallet stun duration is reduced by 25% (does not stack/cannot be increased by perks.)
Fragrant Tuft of Hair: Whenever a survivor is downed while in Tier II, it's duration is extended by 10 seconds. Increases threshold to reach Tier II by 140% (stacks with other threshold add-ons.)

Elaboration:

To put it bluntly, the Myers we have now sucks. M1 killers struggle enough already, but Michael's design is out-dated and is arguably done more effectively by killers like Ghostface and even Pig. You have to ask; is the current Myers even a stealth killer? In theory, yes. But in execution, not really. After rewatching the original Halloween movie from the 1970s, I realized something that was sorely lacking from the character we have now.
The stealth, and the intimidation factor.
With this rework, I aimed to create an almost stalk/pounce/chase playstyle. In my experience playing Myers, it is best to 99% your Evil Within and then pop Tier III when you enter a chase. With that in mind, I figured that a rework should be designed around that dynamic. With the new basekit and add-ons, I want players to be more ballsy in chases. Go for crazy lunges without fear of pallet stuns, things like that. I want Myers to be scary in a way that isn't unfair due to broken add-ons or weak due to an out-dated base kit.
Where Ghostface and Pig can struggle during chases, I want that to be Myers' bread-and-butter.
A change like this would bring him more up-to-snuff with other killers, while not completely abandoning his original power. The dynamic of dipping in and out of tier I and tier II, stealth and attack, would provide an interesting and strong dynamic similar to what makes killers like The Wraith or Xenomorph so fun.
If you read this far, did I cook with this one? What oversights did I make, and how would you change them? I'd love to hear about it in the replies. Thank you for reading :)
